Experts in MonaLisa Touch News Update: The MonaLisa Touch has now been FDA approved in the U.S. for over 2 years and at Arizona Women’s Care more than 1000 procedures have brought amazing results to women across the Southwest region. This amazing NON HORMONAL treatment for vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, frequent bladder or vaginal infections and other symptoms that result from a lack of estrogen has revolutionized our success in treating these disheartening issues. In a recent Stanford University study, reductions in dryness and painful intercourse were especially marked, dropping an average of 75% and 66% respectively. As Lindsay (age 56) states, “I was skeptical, but I needed to try something. After the 3 treatments, intercourse was so much better I could not believe it. I actually asked my husband if we could do it again, and he was shocked! It has made such a difference in our relationship.” The MonaLisa Touch uses fractional CO2 laser therapy

to regenerate collagen and rid the vaginal mucosa of the dry atrophic cells. Three simple treatments in the office 6 weeks apart have shown incredible improvements in vaginal atrophy. These treatments take about 5 minutes and are virtually painfree, no anesthesia is needed. As women caring for women, our expertise and customer service are unsurpassed in the valley. Our staff of all-female physicians were the 1st board certified OB/GYNS in the state of Arizona to perform the MonaLisa Touch procedure. We welcome you to any of our open house seminars to learn more about the MonaLisa Touch! You will have the opportunity to meet with the doctors and talk with the patients who have had this life changing procedure. One last testimonial from Rhonda (age 61) sums up why we do what we do, “Thank you Arizona Women’s Care for offering me the MonaLisa Touch! It is an amazing treatment. I am 100% back to feeling like I did 20 years ago!”

THE BEST IN THE BIZ

I

Why so many women, including celebrities in the entertainment and fitness industries, are becoming National Hair Loss devotees.

t’s an indisputable fact: women want beautiful hair. Throughout history, we’ve been obsessed with making it that way. Unfortunately, another fact is that the majority of women will face some sort of hair loss in their lifetime, and that presents a definite challenge in our quest for a lush, gorgeous ‘do. Female hair loss occurs for an astonishing variety of very common reasons. We can shed our strands post-pregnancy, when we’re stressed out or eating an unbalanced diet, or after surgery or weight loss – but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Hormones, medications, illnesses, and genetics can all play a role in diminishing our “crowning glory.” It’s a problem that doesn’t escape many women, even those in the high-profile entertainment and fitness industries. And when you live your life under the sharp gaze of the public eye, always expected to look your best, having less-than-luscious locks can hit especially hard. Enter National Hair Loss, a company that is fast becoming a favorite of its clientele – women and men, celebs and non-celebs alike – because of the unprecedented results people are achieving. The name pops up more and more frequently in outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter and Women’s Health Magazine, as those whose hair is a professional asset entrust National Hair Loss to preserve and maintain it. One such person is Tina Hernandez, the owner of Body Genesis/Arizona Image Pro, (www.azimagepro.com) a lifestyle and fitness trainer, and an award-winning fitness competitor. Tina’s commitment to inspiring women to look and feel their best is at the core of her business. And as a fitness competitor, Tina’s appearance – including her hair – is central to winning. When her gorgeous locks began falling out, it was a devastating loss, especially for

someone in the limelight. Having been sick and not knowing why, Tina turned to National Hair Loss for help. The team at National Hair Loss was steadfast in a diagnosis and solution, and soon, her hair stabilized and is now healthier than ever and on the way to a full recovery. As a business owner and coach, it’s important that Tina feel her best, and when she graces the stage again, her hair must be at its best too – and now it will. National Hair Loss’s popularity is due to a combination of factors – for starters, it’s staffed by people who have firsthand experience with hair loss, either their own or a loved one’s. This lends to the supportive and understanding atmosphere so crucial for client success. They understand, perhaps better than most, that there are nearlyinnumerable reasons for hair loss, and that it requires much more than a one-size-fits-all approach. That’s why each client receives a comprehensive workup using cutting-edge technologies, and a program is specifically tailored to target their unique issues. “Through a hair analysis, we can learn about a lot of things, including nutritional deficiencies, concentrations of certain metals, and food intolerances,” says Carly Klein, founder of National Hair Loss, who makes it her personal mission to stay on top of the latest in hair therapies. When we start noticing thin patches or a drain full of clumps, it’s alarming at best, especially since we’re rarely sure why it’s happening. “Women don’t realize that some of the normal things they do can harm their hair,” Carly states. For example, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – a common treatment that, ironically, helps women feel and look younger and rejuvenated – can lead to

hair loss. But according to Carly, National Hair Loss can stabilize the hair so that there isn’t an issue, letting women reap the benefits of their HRT worry-free. “Lots of women, even those in the spotlight, struggle with hair loss,” she says. “But we’re masters at what we do.” And whether it’s genetics or medication or diet or another reason altogether, National Hair Loss has the perfect solution to preserve and protect each precious strand. Watch for our upcoming series highlighting the personal hair loss challenges of several of your favorite local celebs!

HOLD ‘EM OR FOLD ‘EM

Are your investments helping or hurting you? People own coins for a variety of reasons… Some bought hoping to “cash in” as gold & silver moved higher. Some simply love to collect historical coins; while others have inherited coins they know little about. It’s generally not easy for most to evaluate and appraise their coins. Many wrongly assume that rare or collectable coins move up and down with the price of precious metals, which is not correct.

What advice do you have those Who hold investment coin? A: Whether you have purchased coins or bullion for investment, been talked into them by a dealer or simply ended up with coins as inheritance or as a gift, it is very important to understand that many coins move in a completely different market than gold or silver. It is much harder to evaluate their true value and can be more complicated to sell. I frequently talk with people who call because of prices they found on the Internet and now think their coins are worth a fortune! People don’t understand that the grade or quality of a collectable coin can make the coin worth $20 in a LOW quality but $100,000 in the FINEST quality. It’s important to know exactly what you have.

Why can’t i simply Watch the price of gold and silver and sell When prices rise? A: Some coins do, in fact, move with gold and silver prices. These are generally “bullion type” coins such as Krugerrand, Gold and Silver Eagles or bullion bars and other more common coins. However, collectables such as old Silver Dollars, $20 St Gaudens Gold Pieces and a huge variety of older gold and silver coins move in their own separate market. The majority of the Rare Coin Market has not moved up in price in over 30 years- even as gold went from $254 an ounce to over $1330 an ounce as I write this. The average person has few reliable avenues to stay updated on coin prices. I believe the reason fewer and fewer non collectors are choosing to hold onto rare coins is because it is simply much easier to hold gold or silver bullion or just cash out of their rare coins and put the money to work elsewhere.

hoW do i knoW the true value of - or hoW to sell my coins? A: At AMERICAN FEDERAL RARE COIN & BULLION we not only sell coins and bullion but we have specialized in helping investors and collectors sell their coins for top dollar for over 35 Years. The first step is to find out what your coins are worth. I offer Coin Portfolio Reviews (CPR) and travel all 50 States to perform them. Next, if you would like to sell, we will tell you exactly what you can expect to realize from your coins. We will buy them outright or we offer a Guaranteed Consignment Program. Either way we have buyers for most any type of coins.

I am offering So Scottsdale readers a complimentary Coin Portfolio Review. Call 480-553-5282 to arrange your appointment.

It’s hard to believe that October is already upon us. And you know what that means: ’Tis the season of fashion, festivals and fetes galore. Perhaps one of the biggest indicators of fall’s return (besides cooler temps), is that the Valley’s cultural centers breathe new creative life into the pulse of the community, with exciting exhibit openings and special events. If it’s been a while since you’ve sauntered into the arts scene, or even if you’re a regular, check out our feature on page 74 to discover fun facts about the venues and their seasonal highlights. We hope to help you make the most of the next month with all things fall, from crave-worthy tricks with treats (page 116) to spirited amusements, including brand-new seasonal liqueurs (page 112), a pumpkin spice margarita (we couldn’t resist; page 114), and barrel-aged cocktails (page 68) that elicit the flavors of the season. Beyond that, there’s plenty of autumn-themed attractions taking place (page 70) as well as returning favorites. Check out our Now section, beginning on page 53, for details on the hottest tickets in town. And if soaking up the outdoors is your goal, consider a decadent dinner under the desert sky (page 110) or cozying up to an inviting fire table (page 101) in your backyard. For us, October also means it’s our annual polo issue, and we’re excited to feature Ashley Busch – a model, polo player and now wife of NASCAR superstar Kurt Busch – as our cover story (page 48). She’ll be making her first appearance at the Seventh Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships next month, and we can’t wait to watch the showdown. In reading this issue, you may notice things look a little (or, a lot!) different. That’s because our staff has been hard at work to redesign the magazine, and we are debuting it this month. You’ll still find all of your favorite features (and perhaps a new addition or two), just with a fresh look. It’s good to shake things up every once in a while, right? Here’s to doing just that and reveling in October’s festivities, both new and tried-and-true. THE NATURAL FAT SOLUTION

PRE OP - FAT TRANSFER TO UPPER 2/3RDS OF FACE WITH LIFT TO LOWER 1/3 OF FACE

POST OP - FAT TRANSFER TO UPPER 2/3RDS OF FACE WITH LIFT TO LOWER 1/3 OF FACE

Have you ever looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize the image staring back at you? Sunken eyes, cheeks, temples and lips tell you you’re melting away. How is it possible that the extra fat of your thighs, hips and abdomen will NOT melt away with diet and exercise, but your facial fullness and softness too readily deflates into nothingness. There’s a solution to this dilemma…the Natural Fat Solution. Why not use your hated body and thigh fat to correct the deflation of facial aging? Over the last 18 years ,Doctor Andrew Wolin has been using fat harvested from each patient’s lower extremity and torso to rejuvenate, restore and reclaim their youthful facial form. A pioneer in the field of auto fat transfers, he has performed thousands of rejuvenating procedures on many patients who were reluctant to undergo more invasive surgery and were candidates for re-volumization rather than classic face lifting. Although Dr Wolin does incorporate fat grafting in many of his facelift patients, he has found that in many cases, fat alone will be an amazingly rewarding procedure and provide his patients with a phenomenal, natural and permanent tool against the deflation of aging. Another benefit is the definite improvement in the health and quality of the re-inflated skin. It appears that the simultaneous transfer of Adult Stem Cells with the Fat Cell Transfer contributes to the amazing results…. a result that is greater than the sum of all the parts. Call today and see if you’re a candidate for the Natural Fat Solution.

Dr. Andrew Wolin has been a leader in the plastic surgical community of Scottsdale since 1985, and his extensive years of experience benefit each patient. His top-notch reputation as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and for cutting-edge procedures draws patients from near and far. RENAISSANCE MAN

The multifaceted life of internationally acclaimed artist Gennaro Garcia

To call Gennaro Garcia just an artist is an understatement. Garcia’s life has been full of serendipity, perseverance and breathtaking talent combined with passion. His artistic endeavors include paintings, sculptures, murals, woodwork, handmade plates, pottery, cooking, photography, and multiple forms of designs.

From a family of restaurateurs, the Mexico native started creating art as a young child. He studied graphic design in Tijuana and moved to the U.S. in his twenties. At the beginning of his American journey, undocumented and homeless, Garcia painted murals in restaurants in Yuma, Arizona.

33

Pulse UP CLOSE He later moved to Phoenix, where Mia Pratt of Old Pratt Studios discovered him in a cafe where Garcia worked and had displayed his abstract paintings. Just a day later, Pratt gave him a job as a muralist and connected him with North Scottsdale art collectors, changing the path of his artistic life. Thanks to his experience with Old Pratt Studios, Garcia has completed more than 100 murals at North Scottsdale homes, from small paintings to ceilings, often inspired by Southwestern and Mexican themes.

Beginnings Years ago, the self-taught artist learned that he loves to partake in multiple disciplines and that his motivations and inspirations are always evolving. “The idea of being an artist is to create art,” he says. “That’s my motto. My way of living. No matter the style, technique, texture or color. Just to create art.” When asked about his favorite type of medium or form of art, he couldn’t pick just one. “I just love to create in general,” says Garcia, whose vivid oil and acrylic paintings illustrate the colorful folklore of Mexico and are often inspired by religious themes and Mexican women, including Frida Kahlo. “The part I enjoy most about art is the learning process. That’s why I have so many different collections and types of art.” His first solo exhibition took place at the Calvin Charles Gallery in Scottsdale, and since then he considers it his home. Garcia’s popularity grew rapidly, and, in 2012, he got an invitation to exhibit in New York City, something he says is “the dream for every artist.” His father called this the “American Dream,” which made Garcia think about his own Mexican Dream. Feeling called to go to Mexico first, Garcia canceled his New York City show and ventured into San Miguel de Allende, where months later he exhibited his art. Now, the internationally acclaimed painter exhibits his art in 11 different galleries and has had more than 60 exhibitions all over the world. In the last few years, Garcia has explored his dual identity as a Mexican and as an American and has expanded his creativity to handmade ceramic dishware. He was even a finalist in Martha Stewart’s American Made contest for his collection Hecho a Mano (Made by Hand), wherein the plates depict a pair of outstretched hands together, which are hand-painted by the artist. He has sold more than 2,000 limited-edition, personalized pieces to different restaurants in the U.S. and Mexico. In 2016, he received the Masters of the Southwest Award, presented by Phoenix Home & Garden magazine.

Beyond Art In 2010, along with Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza from Barrio Cafe, he co-founded Calle 16, a nonprofit formed as a response to the SB 1070 law, to create murals representing the diversity of Phoenix. The first spray-painted mural created for the Calle 16 Mural Project read “Bienvenidos a Arizona.” The public was invited to paint with them, and 120 people showed up, including those

from all over the country. “The idea was to get the kids who were doing graffiti tagging to come and help us,” says Garcia, who also donated a mural with the same idea to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. “And for them to get inspired to create the art in a business way and to help them get into galleries.” Garcia is passionate about the idea of creating public art that will last for eternity. “I dream that one day my daughter is going to be walking in a city and she is going to say ‘there’s a painting of my dad.’” When asked about his most important project, Garcia immediately starts talking about Frida, his seven-year-old daughter. Frida, named after famed painter Frida Kahlo, grew up watching her dad create art and has developed into an artist herself; she’s even exhibited her artwork in five galleries. Together, they participated in a panel at Disney, where they talked about the process of Frida growing up with art, away from tablets and video games. This past summer, both of them painted a mural for the Disney movie Descendants 2 in Mexico City and will be working on a project for the upcoming movie Coco. Devoted to bettering the community, Garcia is committed to giving back by donating his time to promote art in schools while also inspiring young artists on their creative journeys. Following his passion for cooking and his family tradition, Garcia is set to open a new Roosevelt Row restaurant called Taco Chelo with Chef Aaron Chamberlin and Chef Suny Santana later this fall. The venue will be a modern take of Mexican taquerias, and it will include Garcia’s Dia de los Muertos and vintage Mexican hacienda designs. He currently owns restaurants in his native city of San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora. To learn more about Garcia, visit www.artegennaro.com.

How to handle fine hair -Ask the expert! Rodney Gentry, Full-service Designer and Hair Color Specialist, Sachi Studios

Q: We’ve focused on the problems and solutions of fine hair here, but are there also advantages to it? RG: Of course! Fine hair can look stunning, just like all other types of hair. Fine hair tends to be soft and silky. This makes it harder to style, but the flip side is that it can almost glow with a wonderful, natural shine. Those with curly fine hair will also find they spend much less time straightening it than their thicker-haired friends. Fine hair is also brilliant for the summer months, when it helps to keep the head cooler. Just like all other hair types, fine hair comes with plentiful advantages, as well as its own particular issues!

From static issues to limp, dull styles, fine hair can sometimes feel impossible to get right. Thankfully, expert color specialist Rodney Gentry, based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, is here to help! Q: First, why is it that some of us have finer hair than others? Rodney Gentry: Fine hair results when each individual strand of hair has a small circumference, so that individual strands are not as large as those belonging to other people whose hair has a wider circumference. Q: Do people with fine hair have particular problems as a result of the hair’s fineness? RG: Clients with fine hair tend to come to me with a similar range of complaints. While fine hair can look sleek and beautiful, it can be difficult to style. Many clients also wish for more volume to their hair. Q: How do you help them to overcome these issues? RG: There are plenty of options for those with fine hair. Highlights are one way to add volume and texture, and lowlights can work really well, too. It is really incredible what you can do with color. Clients always get a boost when they see how different their fine hair looks after it has undergone a color treatment. There are also some great products on the market to help with fine hair. I’m loving Goldwell Kerasilk Repower range right now. The four products—shampoo, conditioner, volume plumping cream, volume blow-dry spray— harness the power of natural ingredients like carob in order to create long-lasting volume that leaves the hair bouncy and lightweight. Products like these work wonders, and it is great to be able to introduce clients to them and know how much they will enjoy the effect that they have. Simple things like drying technique can also make a big difference. People with fine hair should lift the hair outward and upward as they dry if they want maximum volume. They should also avoid brushing it when wet, as fine hair can break very easily.

Q: What other problems do people with fine hair face? RG: Fine hair can be more prone to damage than thick hair, so those with fine hair need to be careful about over-styling and the use of chemical treatments. Here at Rodney Gentry, we specialize in using products that are kind to the hair, and that nurture it at the same time as coloring it. I don’t believe that there is any place for harsh chemical treatments in a modern salon—they just aren’t necessary anymore. Enzyme-based products can color hair beautifully, and are so much kinder to it than the old peroxide-based treatments. Q: Can you recommend any quick fixes for those with fine hair? RG: Well, a quick trip to Sachi Studios, for one! For those after a quick fix at home, I would recommend always having a deep conditioning masque on hand, ready to be used as a weekly treatment or whenever particularly luscious locks are required. On a daily basis, it really doesn’t get much better than the Goldwell Kerasilk volume line for those looking for added body.

Rodney Gentry can be contacted on 480.639.2000, via rodneygentry@rodneygentry.com, or at www.rodneygentry.com. Visit him at Sachi Studios, 10201 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste. 28, Scottsdale, AZ 85258.

CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN Laurel Lewis reaches summit at work and in life

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

For Laurel Lewis, every goal is within reach – as long as you’re willing to make the climb. And in her case, it’s figurative and literal. “After staying home with my kids for the first 10 years of their lives, I set my sights on getting into the commercial real estate business in 1992,” Lewis says. “At that time, it was still very much a male-dominated industry, so I had my work cut out for me.” And work, she did. Over the past three decades, Lewis – now a senior vice president at NAI Horizon – has sold more than $100 million in local office properties and completed $61 million in real estate transactions. But that isn’t the only uphill battle she’s won. An avid local hiker, Lewis decided she needed a bigger challenge a few years back. The result? In recent years, she successfully summited both Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and climbed Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the continuous 48 states. But it is her newest uphill climb of which she is most proud – volunteering at New Pathways for Youth, helping guide local at-risk youth through long-term mentoring. “Right now, I have a 12-year-old female mentee who will be with me through college,” Lewis says. “We’ve put together goals for her life – short- and long-term – and meet weekly to hone in on actionable ways to achieve them. We also take part in monthly, structured workshops and, of course, go have fun.” And that second climb? The organization’s signature event, AZ BizBash. “We are putting on a fabulous concert, foodie fest and silent auction at The Venue Scottsdale on Oct. 5 to raise critical funds for the organization as well as get some new blood involved with what we do,” Lewis says. “We hope to raise more than $150,000 this year on that one night.” For more information on the organization, mentorship program or AZ BizBash, visit www.npfy.org.

SEEN & HEARD

How Elaine Gulino created a way to support local talent in the community

BY BRITTANY MARONEY / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

For most of her career, Elaine Gulino had always been in sales, which meant endless meetings, tight deadlines, and little creative freedom. She knew she had more to contribute and the desire to support her family and her community. Her company, Seen & Heard Marketing, was born out of both. “Honestly, I was a single mother of two young children, so I was terrified,” she says of launching her business. “But I was able to set my own my schedule, and it was so liberating being able to be there for my children.” Now, Gulino’s business is multifaceted; she not only helps business owners with implementing creative campaigns, she is also an advocate for insurance policyholders – and she’s giving back. Four years ago, she launched a contest called Can You Hear Me Now?, modeled after TV-based music competitions, which gives local vocalists the chance to compete for the grand prize: a year of marketing services. “I do not have a musical bone in my body, so I came up with the contest to support the amazing musicians in the area. They have the potential but need to build their personal brand,” Gulino says of the contest, which was held last month. “The winners receive one year of free logo design, social media services, studio time, video production, and voice lessons. It’s the full package and a creative way to support our community.” Gulino sees that the performers are fearless in their passionate pursuit of music, and she finds great meaning in providing budding talent with the same services that bigger stars have. “Tenacity and perseverance is what built my business, and that is something I can share with these talented contestants,” Gulino says. “My advice is to understand you will get a ton of nos before the yes, and don’t sell yourself short to anybody. Know your worth and never give up. I didn’t.”

CONNECTION THROUGH CLOTHING Meet Peter Harden, Scottsdale Fashion Square’s irreplaceable gem

BY EMILY GLYNN / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

“In my role, menswear must be presented at an impeccable level,” says Peter Harden, Scottsdale Fashion Square’s roving concierge (a position created solely for him). Since his early days as a mall security guard (and the owner of a single pair of tattered sneakers), the man has evolved into a flawlessly clothed style connoisseur, fulfilling shoppers’ needs and aiming to exceed all levels of expectation. Harden is now one of the most conscientiously dressed individuals to grace the mall’s marble hallways. On any given day, Harden roves the property in a crisp dress shirt and pants, wingtip shoes from Johnston & Murphy, and a designer tie, selected by his daughter. Weekends call for head-to-toe Polo Ralph Lauren, aside from his belt, which is unfailingly Gucci. Harden’s incentive for keeping such an exemplary wardrobe and appearance has little to do with vanity. He views personal style as an avenue of human connection, one capable of generating veritable happiness. “Each morning, I ask to touch at least one person’s life and to make one person’s day extraordinarily special,” he says. Smiles and kind words never fail. Salvatore Ferragamo and Hugo Boss just happen to make the job a little easier.

What might we be surprised to find in your closet? A six-foot-six-inch mannequin man, fully dressed in jeans, a camo coat, tennis shoes, sunglasses, and other accessories. That’s the current look – I change it regularly. Which pieces do you find yourself wearing again and again? Ties and belts are my weaknesses. I love accessories that you can wear with so many different things. Can you let us in on any of the mall’s best-kept secrets? Scottsdale Fashion Square employees are some of the sweetest people I’ve ever met in my life. We’re all here to make our shoppers’ experience unreal!

POLISHED TO PERFECTION Haley Metcalf seeks to inspire female professionals with elegant style choices

BY EMILY GLYNN / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Predictability can be a luxury, one that Haley Metcalf, the event manager at Phoenix Business Journal (PBJ), doesn’t encounter often. “I sometimes wish I had a scheduled life,” she admits. “My days are constantly changing, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t absolutely love it.” The unparalleled poise Metcalf exudes around the clock fools many into thinking her fashion sense is instinctive, but she readily admits that she didn’t come into her own until she began interning for PBJ during college. Enamored by the confidence of her female clients, Metcalf set to work on transforming her wardrobe from average to extraordinary. “I was inspired to create my own ‘look’ and [hope] to be that inspiration for young women entering the corporate world,” Metcalf says. Because her schedule is ever-changing, Metcalf relies on outfits that transition easily from day to night. Loose blouses tucked into feminine pencil skirts serve as her go-to ensemble, a blank canvas for entertaining her Kendra Scott jewelry obsession. Thankfully, Metcalf thoroughly enjoys the effort that goes into creating the perfect look. With such a high-profile career, she can’t really afford to get lax with her presentation. “I always have my ‘game face’ on and my style matches that,” Metcalf says. “Polished, clean and classic.”

Which fall trends are you most looking forward to wearing? Layers are everything, and even though it doesn’t get that chilly in Arizona, a nice puffer coat can complete your outfit and is one trend I’m looking forward to. What has been your biggest splurge? Anytime I go into lululemon. You can’t just buy one or two things there.

From polo star to NASCAR wife, Ashley Busch weighs in on her fast-paced life and makes her first appearance at the upcoming Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships

So Scottsdale! October '17

PHOTOS BY WALTER G. ARCE PHOTOS

The world knows Ashley Busch (née Van Metre) as an accomplished model, polo player and entrepreneur. An award-winning equestrian and glowing newlywed, she has big hopes for the future, including being a mom someday soon. But, for now, Busch is set to make her first debut at the Seventh Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses & Horsepower, something borne out of her early love for the sport. Busch started her equestrian career at the tender age of 5. Raised in Middleburg, Virginia, Busch admits that there was a sense of power and connection the first time she rode a horse. She was 11 years old when she held her first polo mallet, and after trying out for her first polo team, she had found her niche. Her excitement for the new sport also encouraged the rest of the Busch family to give it a try. “For years, I begged my dad for my own pony. It takes six ponies to really be able to play the game and I didn’t even have one,” Busch says. “But first, he wanted to make sure I was really committed to the sport. He would take me to the stables daily, and then one day I walked in and there she was, Chocolate. A horse of my very own.” Over the course of her career, Busch went on to play in competitive polo tournaments across South America, Europe and the U.S. Her career highlights include winning the Port Macaya

50

So Scottsdale! October '17

14-goal alongside Carlos Gracida Sr., winning the Polo Club (IPC) 12-goal, and being undefeated in the Hobe Sound 8-goal tournament. In 2015, Busch was named MVP after her team, Altair Polo, won the 8-Goal Spring Challenge Tournament at Grand Champions Polo Club. In April 2017, her team won the Grand Champions Cup for her second spring tournament victory in three years. In addition to being a competitive polo player, Busch also modeled with renowned Wilhelmina Models. Best known as the face of the United States Polo Association (USPA), she has been featured in several global campaigns, including the association’s 125th anniversary campaign in 2010. “After years as an athlete, modeling gave me a new sense of purpose,” says Busch, who is also a brand ambassador for La Isla Swimwear. “Not only was I able to celebrate something I truly believed in [USPA], I also had a hand in making the sport of polo more relatable.” The same sense of purpose extends into Busch’s dedication to numerous philanthropic ventures. She frequently hosts polo exhibitions such as Polo for a Purpose benefitting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Van Metre 5-Mile Run for Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

A Dynamic Duo In 2011, Busch really met her match: Kurt Busch, a 27-time winner in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series and reigning Daytona 500 champion. He had the charisma of a champion and the humbleness of the guy next door – two things that captured Busch’s attention. Six years later, in January 2017, they married in a star-studded affair. Now she admits, “He is more like me than people realize. We’re both competitors, we both understand time on the road and the commitment that this lifestyle takes. I am lucky that I have a guy like him, [one who] respects me as an athlete and loves that I am as committed as he is to my sport.” In fact, the newly named Mrs. Busch says he is an incredible cheerleader for her polo team – and sometimes more. “He always tries to play waterboy,” Busch laughs. “You can see him at my polo matches bringing water to the players. I always tell him not to, but he’s all about keeping my team hydrated. It’s really incredibly sweet.” He’s not the only supporter in the family. Busch has been known to be a consistent sideline figure at Kurt’s NASCAR races. She even has one track that is a favorite, right here in the Valley. “Phoenix International Raceway is a favorite of mine. I love the track, the staff and the fact that every day has perfect conditions for racing,” Busch says. “I also have to say it’s one of my favorite destinations for food, fun and shopping. This city is one of our favorites because we can really enjoy a workday, yet it feels like a destination. I’m not sure how Phoenicians do it!”

The Polo Party Busch has her own workday coming up, as one of the star players in the upcoming Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships. She’ll kick off the event Oct. 5, making her Scottsdale debut at The Evans Furs and Leathers Polo Preview Party at Dominick’s Steakhouse. The party, which will be held in the rooftop dining room from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., will include hors d’oeuvres, a no-host bar, a performance by the Phoenix Opera, and the opportunity to mingle with Busch and other polo players. Then, on Nov. 11, Busch will represent the undefeated Aspen Valley Polo Club as they take on the Monte-Carlo Polo Club. Also joining the same team will be polo legend Mike Azzaro, who will make his debut appearance at The World’s Greatest Polo Party. Last year, The Polo Party drew the biggest polo crowd in the country with more than 11,000 fans, and, this year, attendees can expect more of the same excitement. Favorite returning events will include The Canine Couture Dog Fashion Show, The World’s “Longest” Catwalk Fashion Show, and previews of the 2018 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction and 2018 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Of course, there are also plenty of new (and delicious) additions, including a field-side Sandbar tent, a fried chicken and Champagne lounge aptly named “Fried and Fizzy,” and a VIP tent called Prime: A Luxury Tent Experience. And be sure to get your tickets ahead of time for the Scottsdale Maserati Brunch on Sunday, an ideal way to round out a weekend of nonstop thrills. It’s an event perfect for the Busch duo. And Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships Director Jason Rose can’t wait. “Ashley Busch has the charisma, culture and panache that

really makes this a star-studded event,” Rose says. “We were even more thrilled when Kurt Busch said he will be on hand not only to cheer on his wife but do the ‘first drop’ for her match. Their affection for each other is really infectious.” Busch has experienced so much, yet she’s not quite ready to stop. She dreams of building polo teams, designing her own swim line, traveling the world, and being at her husband’s side as he vies to win another NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. And, of course, she has a few other plans. “I’ve accomplished a lot, and it’s been an incredible year with Kurt. We’re ready for whatever the future holds,” Busch says. “Maybe even putting a few little baby Buschs in a NASCAR or atop a pony. Truly, I can’t wait.” And, like many others, the Buschs will be gearing up on Nov. 11 to experience the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships and witness what is one of the most exciting events in the Valley. “I am thrilled to be playing in the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships,” Busch says. “For years now, I’ve been hearing about the event, the party, and the sheer numbers of attendees. I am so honored to be playing for Aspen Valley and look forward to bringing the Molina Cup home to Aspen Valley again.” Find Busch on Twitter and Instagram at @mrsashleybusch and purchase tickets to The Polo Party at www.thepoloparty.com.

The golf portion of the event, one of the oldest and most beloved days at the links in the Valley, features live entertainment, food and drink in addition to course play and prizes. This year, it will be hosted at the McCormick Ranch Golf Club. A bonus: Those who purchase a “fivesome” for golf also get 10 tickets to the big gala the next day. This sponsorship starts at $3,000. The formal gala is held the day after the tournament, giving plenty of time for those who may have played to rest. More than 1,500 people are expected to attend, each walking the red carpet before being feted with live music, professional dancers, interactive games, street magic and dozens of luxe raffle prizes.

And rather than host a sit-down dinner during the lively evening, the NiteFlite Gala instead invites more than a dozen local chefs to provide samplings throughout the evening. Open bar is included in the general admission and VIP tickets, as well as bottle service with the gala table packages. There will also be a live band and dancing throughout the evening. “By hosting these special events, we aim to draw the community together to raise funds for and to educate our citizens about the financial, medical and emotional needs of Arizona’s children,” Irvine says. “This is one of our largest events, and last year we raised almost $400,000 in these two days. We know just how far that money will go for the organizations we support.”

GET A TASTE OF CAVE CREEK The annual foodie event ushers in all-new experiences

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Now in its 24th year, The Taste of Cave Creek has grown into one of the North Valley’s premier foodie fests of the fall. With 8,000 guests expected, the two-day event continues to expand, adding new restaurants and interactive elements every year. “The Taste of Cave Creek will once again be held at Stagecoach Village so we can take advantage of the outdoor, open-air setting. And as in recent years, we will have two stages of live music nightly, with acts including Fosterson, Rock the District and more,” says longtime event chair and Cave Creek Town Marshal Adam Stein. More than two dozen restaurants – many of whom call Cave Creek, neighboring Carefree and/or North Scottsdale home – are signed on to take part, each sampling from their fall and winter menus. They include The Bourbon Cellar, Buffalo Chip Saloon & Steakhouse, Cartwright’s Modern Cuisine, El Encanto Mexican Restaurant, Harold’s Corral, Indigo Crow, The Horny Toad and many more. Food sample tickets range from $3 to $5. “The event will also feature beer, wine and cocktail gardens – look for the vodka and tequila tastings for sure – but extra effort was made this year to develop impressive VIP experiences on top of these general admission sampling areas,” says Stein, noting drink sample tickets are just $1. As a result, at 5 p.m. both evenings, The Taste of Cave Creek will feature a limited-seating VIP beer experience. Hosted in a private area, tickets for this event are $50 and must be purchased in advance. Guests who take part in this program will go beyond sampling craft beers; they will sit with brewers to learn about their beer-making process while enjoying beer samples paired with small bites from local chefs, who will also be on hand. “We will host a similarly focused VIP wine experience both evenings as well, but at 7 p.m. to accommodate guests who want to take part in both,” says Stein, noting the wine experience is also $50 with limited

tickets available for purchase in advance. And finally, Stein promises a “reel” new offering for seafood lovers at the event: A Tito’s VIP experience where representatives from the vodka brand will be serving up cocktails to pair with an old-fashioned shrimp and crawfish boil, courtesy of Creekers Cold Beer & Crab. This experience, also being held at a special tent separate from the main event, is available for purchase in advance for $15. Each of these VIP events has reserved seating, and reservations for any of these specialty events must be made in advance by calling 480.488.6612. A portion of proceeds from The Taste of Cave Creek, which is sponsored by Sanderson Ford and Sanderson Lincoln, will benefit the Sonoran Arts League.

SEPARATING THE BEST FROM “THE REST” – HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR AUTO SHOP IS HONEST SHAHE KOULLOUKIAN, OWNER OF MAZVO AUTO CAR CARE CENTER, GIVES US A FEW VALUABLE TIPS ON AUTO-REPAIR INTEGRITY.

It could happen to any driver: you hear squeaking or grinding coming from your brakes. You’re in dire need of service to keep you safe on the road, and desperation sends you to the closest repair shop. But they’re dishonest, and questionable business practices and unnecessary repairs end up costing you way more than you bargained for. Unfortunately, this occurs all too often – and it’s exactly why Shahe Koulloukian, owner of Mazvo Auto Car Care Center, has dedicated more than two decades to raising the bar on vehicle maintenance and repair. Mazvo is widely regarded as the gold standard of auto shops, offering unparalleled expertise and trustworthiness. We asked Shahe what sets his business apart, and he told us that there are four key components of a quality service center. CUSTOMER SERVICE. The way your auto repair facility treats you says a lot. Quality of work is important, but their attitude toward customers is equally so. “You should never feel like you’re bothering or burdening your auto shop with questions,” says Shahe. You also shouldn’t be made to feel bad for what you know (or don’t know) about how cars work. You don’t need to – their job is to explain and empower. Also, someone should greet you upon arrival; an auto shop that leaves you wandering on your own for five minutes before even saying hello may not be too eager to gain your business. Mazvo technicians, office staff, and Shahe himself greet customers promptly with complimentary soft drink, popcorn, hot teas, and coffee. “We don’t just want the job,” he asserts. “We aim to build relationships with our customers.” Shahe’s desire to make his customers feel at home and not pressured is evident in Mazvo’s attention to their every need: a relaxing atmosphere with a beautiful outdoor patio that features a water fountain, for example, and complimentary beach cruiser bikes if you’d like to get out and explore while your vehicle is being repaired. DETAILS. Of course you want to hear that someone can fix your engine problem, but don’t you also want to know why? A good auto repair

facility will make you feel comfortable by explaining the “why” in every situation. “We encourage you to ask as many questions as you can; this is your time, there’s no reason to feel rushed,” says Shahe. “We’ll educate you when we provide our suggestions and quotes so you can feel confident that you’re making the right choices for your vehicle.” HONESTY. Mechanics are often portrayed as dishonest with estimates – but there are always bad apples that metaphorically “spoil the bunch.” An honest auto repair shop will listen, allow you to engage, and address your concerns, only suggesting other services if their professional opinion deems it necessary for safety in your vehicle. “A shop that’s in the business of up-selling will stand out as feeling pushy and aggressive,” Shahe advises. Additionally, an honest mechanic will offer a fair price. Sure, the competition is big, but a good repair shop should provide you with solutions, not sell you additional problems. Open, direct communication is the best foundation for an honest service relationship. TRUST. The only way an auto repair shop can be trusted is to prove themselves trustworthy, which is exactly what Mazvo has worked hard to do every day, for every customer. They do this by standing behind what they say and believe in. At the end of the day it’s not what they say or what they do, but how they make you feel that matters the most. Mazvo Auto Car Care Center possesses all these qualities and more, serving the community with a caring team of certified, licensed professionals. Mazvo aims to provide the best service for any domestic or foreign vehicle in the Metro Phoenix area. Loyal customers from Paradise Valley, Tempe, Chandler, Scottsdale, and surrounding cities choose Mazvo for their unmatched service and integrity. Distinguishing the good from the bad can be tricky, but Shahe has a parting tidbit of wisdom for any consumer: “Service excellence can be truly defined by what a business chooses not to do well.”

THE OLDER, THE BETTER

Barrel-aged cocktails are creating a stir in Valley

Making the perfect barrel-aged cocktail, the process by which pre-mixed drinks are expertly placed in customized barrels for weeks or months to change a cocktail’s character and flavor, is perhaps the hottest drink trend of the past several years. And several Scottsdale venues are at the helm of the trend.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Citizen Public House All of Citizen Public House’s cocktails originated inside an American oak barrel with a grade-four char inside, which denotes the degree to which the wood has been burnt inside the barrel. New cocktails are made in small five-liter batches and tested over an aging period of six to eight weeks. Using a process called solera, the cocktail is continuously reintroduced to the barrel before the original contents run out so that the barrel never runs dry. Don’t miss the Julep ($12), which is made with Bulleit Rye Whiskey, Menthe-Pastille (a minty liqueur), Aperol and AZ Bitters Lab Figgy Pudding Bitters. www.citizenpublichouse.com. EVO Like other venues, EVO features an amazing barrel-aged Manhattan. But, unlike most, they also developed a tequila-based drink called La Paz ($12), which is made with barrel-aged tequila, Aperol, lime and elderflower foam. A relatively new technique in barrel aging – and technically done without the actual barrel itself – the process involves placing charred oak coils into a bottle of tequila and sealing it for two weeks so the flavors in the tequila meld with the smoky oak. www.evoscottsdale.com. Fat Ox Fat Ox has a total capacity of 100 liters for barrel aging, which is mostly used for their popular Negronis and Manhattans. But for something a little different for fall, try the aged Vieux Carre ($14), a classic New Orleans cocktail made with rye whiskey, cognac, sweet vermouth and several types of bitters. The aging process, often over a month, has a profound impact on the vermouth and whiskey, bringing out the complexity of the vermouth, as well as the oak and vanilla notes in the whiskey. Mixologist Conor Cook also uses a touch of Islay Scotch Whisky for added earthiness. www.ilovefatox.com. Grassroots Kitchen & Tap Grassroots features three barrel-aged cocktails at any given time – a Sazerac, a Manhattan and a Negroni – aged in cask barrels that infuse oak, caramel and even vanilla notes. Try the Negroni, which features Tanqueray London Dry Gin, Campari, sweet vermouth and orange peel. The Negroni ($11) is notorious for either being loved or hated for its distinct bitter taste, but by aging the cocktail, that bitterness is softened on the palate. www.grassrootsaz.com. Pig & Pickle Each one of Pig & Pickle’s four barrel-aged cocktails is a twist on an American classic and aged anywhere from one to three months. The Man or WoMan-hattan ($13) are standouts from this bunch. This seemingly traditional Manhattan is anything but thanks to the addition of Yellow Chartreuse, a sweet and aromatic French liqueur made from 130 herbs, plants and flowers. It is combined with Russell’s Reserve Bourbon and vermouth-like Bonal, then barrel-aged for more than a month. To increase the depth of flavor, sweet vermouth and AZ Bitters Lab’s Mi Casa Bitters are added when served. www.pigandpickle.com.

ALL THINGS AUTUMN Fall in love with five seasonal fetes

The turn of the season ushers in a plethora of events, from Halloween spooks to pumpkin spice aplenty. So with 100-degree days behind us (for now), it’s time to head out to some of October’s best autumn-themed attractions.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Four Peaks Oktoberfest From Oct. 13 to 15, Tempe Town Lake will transform into the Valley’s largest Oktoberfest extravaganza. Now in its 45th year, Four Peaks Oktoberfest (www.fourpeaksoktoberfest.com) is a very Bavarian celebration with live music, food, drinks, games, dancing and more. The event is open to all ages, with both a traditional children’s carnival as well as an adults-only area with PopA-Shot, Hi Striker, bucket toss, roller derby, giant Jenga and cornhole. Admission is free and beer samplings start at $20 for eight tastes. Jack and Jill’s Haunted Hill More interactive psychological thriller than traditional haunted house, Jack and Jill’s Haunted Hill (www.jackandjillshauntedhill.com) starts its scaring by showing guests a “special report” on the local TV news of Jack and Jill, who have gone missing after finding an abandoned mineshaft in the area. From there, prepare to explore all of your biggest fears – complete darkness, being locked in, insects, and spooks around every corner – one scream at a time. Bonus: The attraction uses an online reservation system, so there are no lines. Tickets range from $25 to $35 every Thursday to Sunday this month. And, of course, they are open on Halloween, which is a Monday this year. Nightmare on Princess Drive On Oct. 28, the eighth annual Nightmare on Princess Drive returns to The Plaza Bar at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (www.scottsdaleprincess.com), where this year’s theme is CarnEVIL. For one night only, starting at 9 p.m., the indoor/outdoor hot spot will transform into a haunted affair with stilt walkers, fire breathers, rooftop dancers, creepy clowns, a DJ, circus-themed cocktails, and costume contests. Admission to the party is complimentary, but fancy “ghouls” and boys can RIP in VIP-style by reserving a table and bottle service. Schnepf Farms Pumpkin & Chili Party Every Thursday through Sunday this month, Queen Creek’s Schnepf Farms (www.schnepffarms.com) will offer guests of all ages the best of old-fashioned fall fun at their Pumpkin & Chili Party. Families, or even those on a date night, can enjoy corn mazes, pig races, hay rides, carousel and pony rides, a petting zoo, cozy bonfires, craft activities, and pumpkin picking each night. On Friday and Saturday nights, there will also be fireworks after dark. Admission is $20 and children under age two are free; discounts can be found online. The Haunted Hotel Ball On Oct. 27 and 28, The Saguaro Hotel will partner with 104.7 KISS FM to put on a decidedly adults-only Halloween party, The Haunted Hotel Ball (www.hauntedhotelball.com). Taking place across multiple venues at the resort, the weekend-long festivities will include a masquerade-themed pool party outside, zombie go-go dancers, and interactive adult “haunted house” experiences inside. General admission tickets start at $69 and VIP passes start at $109.

SILVER SCREEN SOIREE The Scottsdale International Film Festival celebrates its 17th anniversary

BY OFELIA MONTELONGO

In early November, the West’s Most Western Town will be the home of the annual, highly acclaimed Scottsdale International Film Festival. The five-day event will take place from Thursday, Nov. 2 through Monday, Nov. 6, featuring more than 40 films from over 30 different countries. In 2001, inspired by a trip to Paris, Scottsdale International Film Festival founder Amy Ettinger had the vision of creating a solution for the lack of film diversity in the Valley, with the catalyst for the festival being “film is art is life is film.” In other words, film is an art form that is both a reflection of our everyday life and a means to escape it – and the film festival celebrates just that. Since its inaugural year, the festival has brought filmmakers and film aficionados together with the opportunity to experience a blend of outstanding cinema from all over the world, ranging from major Academy Award winners to undiscovered indie gems. “Our main goal is to bring our community films which would not otherwise find an audience in the greater metropolitan area,” Ettinger says. During its 16-year history, the festival has presented more than 500 films with over 90,000 attendees. Ettinger’s love for foreign film started at an early age. “My mother made sure we had maximum exposure to the arts in our formative years, and film became the standout for me,” she says. When asked about her favorite part of the festival, Ettinger responds, “Standing near the screen and watching the audience respond to the films.” This season, cinephiles can expect fresh stories. “We are adding films that embrace the 21st century in terms of the storytelling and appeal to slightly younger audiences,” she says. There will also be more documentaries and more films in English. Filmgoers can expect award-winning movies, and even filmmakers and celebrities among the attendees. The Phoenix Film Critics Society will judge the films among seven different categories, including best film, screenplay, director, actor and actress. Ettinger invites audiences to have fun and maximize the experience by reading up on the films prior to the shows. “Plan out your schedule, purchase tickets or passes in advance, show up early, and know that there’s plentiful parking surrounding the complex.” To buy tickets, go to the box office once the festival begins or purchase online in advance to guarantee a seat. The online presale begin Oct. 2 for film festival members – who will get benefits such as VIP passes, complimentary tickets to screenings and access to film-related events throughout the year – and a week later for the general public. The event will be held at the Harkins Shea 14 Theatres, 7354 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale. For more information, visit www.scottsdalefilmfestival.com.

When was the last time you explored the area’s rich cultural centers? If it’s been a while – or even if not – now is a great time to get reacquainted since October ushers in a plethora of new exhibits and special events at the Valley’s top museums and performing arts centers. Whether you love musicals, prefer the quiet contemplation of a museum, or are simply into learning something new, we’ve got the scoop on the upcoming 2017-2018 season here.

WESTERN SPIRIT: SCOTTSDALE’S MUSEUM OF THE WEST The Venue: Since opening in 2015, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West has weaved a tale of the 19 Western states through art, artifacts and depictions of early trailblazers. Located in the heart of Downtown Scottsdale, it celebrates the West’s culture with rotating exhibits that feature art and rare historic artifacts on loan from some of the world’s best collectors and institutions. The museum became a Smithsonian

Beyond the galleries and picturesque courtyard, there are interactive exhibits, a museum store, and a theater/auditorium that hosts special performances, programs and events. Both the theater and the sculpture courtyard can even be rented for private events. ASU GAMMAGE

The exterior of ASU Gammage at Arizona State University's Tempe campus.

HIGHLIGHTS: ASU Gammage Beyond Select dates Oct. 7, 2017-April 28, 2018 This special performance series goes beyond the typical theater experience by bringing world-class artists into the community through workshops, master classes and discussions. From exploring the Cuban rhythms of Havana to blending classical ballet with Harlem culture, the works presented in Beyond reflect the multifaceted, diverse viewpoints of artists from around the globe. For most shows, attendees will also be invited to a post-performance after-party with the artists. $20.

Cinderella Dec. 19-24 Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella is a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical from the creators of The Sound of Music and South Pacific. The family-friendly production will feature an incredible orchestra, jaw-dropping transformations, and fan-favorite moments such as the pumpkin, the glass slipper and the masked ball, plus some surprising new twists. Times vary. Tickets start at $30.

Hamilton Jan. 30-Feb. 25, 2018 This award-winning musical will make a debut times two – its ASU Gammage run will be its first time in the Valley as well as at a college campus. Hamilton tells the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s righthand man during the Revolutionary War and was the nation’s first Treasury Secretary. The score blends hiphop, jazz, blues, rap, rhythm and blues, and Broadway. Times and prices not available at press time.

The Venue: For more than 50 years, ASU Gammage has been an Arizona icon, and, in fact, it’s the only public building in the state designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Located at Arizona State University, the 75,000-square-foot venue boasts elegant architecture, unbelievable acoustics, and a diversity of repertoire, including operas, musicals and symphonies. The building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is a showstopper – it’s made up of 27 different shades of terracotta, no right angles (but lots of circles), and 3,000 seats, with an outdoor promenade that overlooks South Mountain and the Valley. The likes of Bruce Springsteen and the Joffrey Ballet have graced the stage, though what really put ASU Gammage on the map was the creation of a collapsible, 80-ton orchestra shell, which gave the venue the capability to host Broadway shows. Now, it’s one of the world’s largest university-based presenters of performing arts and one of the top Broadway touring houses in the country. This season also marks ASU Gammage’s largest season subscription in history (season tickets are sold out, though individual show tickets are available). Additionally, the performing arts center also offers community programs such as master classes and a camp for young students. www.asugammage.com.

HEARD MUSEUM The Venue: What started out as a small museum founded in 1929 has grown in size and stature as a space dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art. The museum was modeled to fit in with the Spanish-style homes in the surrounding Phoenix neighborhood and has now expanded to be eight times the size of its original structure. THE ROSSON HOUSE MUSEUM AT HERITAGE SQUARE The Venue: Get a glimpse into Phoenix’s vibrant Victorian past at Heritage Square. Located on Block 14 of the original townsite of Phoenix, the square dates back to the 1800s and includes the Rosson House Museum as well as an array of restaurants, an event space, and a museum gift shop. At 12 rooms and 4,2000 square feet, the home was built for $7,500 (making it one of the most expensive houses in Phoenix at that time). The Queen Anne Victorian construction takes design influences from Eastlake, Asian, Italian and French architecture. Though the space retains very few of its original furnishings, it does have original bricks and roofing tiles, parquet floors, a staircase, pressed tin ceilings, door and window hardware, and many original windows. After changing hands many times, the City of Phoenix purchased the home in 1974. The Heritage Square Foundation was created to be in charge of the restoration of the Rosson House, and, as a nonprofit, they still manage, maintain and preserve the museum and collection today, working in partnership with the city. The home was restored to its original condition in the late 1970s and opened as a museum in 1980. Admission to the Rosson House Museum is by guided tour only, and it is open for tours Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday noon to 4 p.m.

visitors a first-person perspective about the art of the American Indian people, especially those from the Southwest. Drawing on its extensive collection as well as loaned artwork, the museum presents a mix of long-term and changing exhibitions ranging from collected ancestral artifacts and historic drawings more than a century old to contemporary paintings, jewelry and sculptures. Several of the most captivating areas of the museum are located outdoors. The campus, which has both indoor and outdoor spaces, houses the Scott L. Libby, Jr. Amphitheater for large music and dance performances, as well as the Steele Auditorium, used for performances, lectures, films, theatrical presentations, private dinners and meetings. Additionally, the campus has a gift shop and Courtyard Café, serving up seasonally inspired homemade fare. www.heard.org.

Mesa Arts Center will showcase Arizona native Joe Sorren's work in The Dusk Parade through Jan. 7, 2018.

During the nearly one-hour tour, docents will lead you through the first two floors and all 12 rooms of the home, sharing the stories of the residents who lived there, the history of territorial Arizona, and fun facts about Victorian America. VIP tours generally also include access to the attic as well. www.heritagesquarephx.org.

MESA ARTS CENTER The Venue: Opened in 2015, Mesa Arts Center anchors the arts and cultural district in downtown Mesa. The facility is the largest comprehensive arts campus in the Southwest – it's comprised of four buildings totaling 212,775 square feet – and the only center in Arizona offering extensive professional performing arts, visual arts and arts education programming. The architecturally stunning facility is home to four theaters, Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum (which has five art galleries), and 14 state-of-the-art visual and performing arts studios and classrooms. Altogether, the venue attracts world-class touring shows, including Broadway, music, dance and family entertainment; innovative exhibits (there are currently four on view for free); educational classes; workshops; and four major festivals as well as a free lunchtime concert series in the fall and spring. The complex itself is thoughtfully modeled after the Sonoran Desert, with jagged angles, sloping roofs and regional colors that reflect a rich Southwest environment. At the heart of it, the 700-foot Shadow Walk provides a place for group gatherings, performances and quiet reflection in the shade. www. mesaartscenter.com.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM The Venue: At 200,000 square feet, the expansive Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) is one of a kind, as the world’s only global instrument museum. Its spacious galleries house more than 6,500 instruments – from a collection of nearly 16,000 – from over 200 countries and territories. Wireless hotspots around the museum provide loops of streamed music through state-of-the-art audio and video technologies that immerse you in the sounds of musical

Highlights include the Steinway piano on which John Lennon composed Imagine and one of Eric Clapton’s Gibson ES-345 guitars from the 1960s. The museum also includes a cafe with fare that often reflects special exhibits or events, a museum store, and a 300-seat music theater that hosts concerts. SCOTTSDALE CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS The Venue: Since 1975, Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts has been considered one of the premier performing arts halls in the Western U.S., showcasing a variety of dance, music, theater, comedy and film. Each year, the center is host to more than 1,000 performances, educational programs and festivals including the annual Scottsdale Culinary Festival. The complex, located near the grassy, 21-acre Scottsdale Civic Center Mall, is comprised of the 853seat Virginia G. Piper Theater, the 137-seat Stage 2, and neighboring Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater, which can hold up to 1,800 people. Education and outreach is at the core of the center’s programming, reaching nearly 20,000 children and adults each year through school and family matinee performances, teacher training, master classes, lectures, workshops, in-school artist residencies, and outreach with community partners. www.scottsdaleperformingarts.org.

SCOTTSDALE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART The Venue: Situated near Scottsdale Civic Center Mall, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) is comprised of four galleries showcasing nine to 12 rotating exhibits per year and works from a permanent collection, along with a fifth functional art installation and space for community engagement called SMoCA Lounge. Since 1999, SMoCA has spotlighted contemporary and modern art, architecture and design through a variety of artistic programming including lectures, readings, performances, docent-led tours, workshops and classes. The minimalist building, a renovation of a former movie theater, is, of course, artful in its construction; its eggplant and gray color palette is reminiscent of the dusky shadows left by the sun on the McDowell Mountains. Perhaps the museum’s crown jewel is the James Turrell Skyspace, Knight Rise, housed within the sculpture garden. The Skyspace invites visitors to observe the sky through an opening in the ceiling – it’s especially captivating at sunset, when the framed sky is awash in color. Free all day and night on Thursdays; free after 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. www.smoca.org.

HERBERGER THEATER The Venue: Over the last 28 years, 4.2 million patrons have enjoyed more than 15,000 performances at Herberger Theater, a nonprofit organization that aims to foster the growth of the arts in Phoenix. Opened in 1989 and fully renovated in 2010, Herberger Theater offers three theater venues, two art galleries, a lounge and outdoor plaza, and rentable event space for a variety of community uses. Using its wide range of spaces, Herberger hosts performances by its resident performing arts organizations: Arizona Theatre Company, Center Dance Ensemble and iTheatre Collaborative, as well as welcoming other companies to use the space, including Valley Youth Theatre and Arizona Broadway Theatre. Additionally,

the center’s art galleries – one located on the second level of the main building and the other across the street from the theater at the Arizona Center – feature Arizona artists’ work with a portion of artwork sales benefiting the theater and its youth outreach programs. Those sales, combined with the theater’s annual fundraising efforts (such as Stand Up for Downtown Theater and its festival of arts, which is Nov. 4), support its youth outreach programs, designed to give Arizona youth opportunities to excel, learn and heal through experiences with the arts. www.herbergertheater.org.

TOVREA CASTLE AT CARRARO HEIGHTS The Venue: You’ve probably seen Tovrea Castle while driving along the highway and wondered what the story is behind the beautiful four-story, 5,000-square-foot landmark in the distance. You’re not alone – the property has intrigued Valley residents for more than 80 years. In 1928, Alessio Carraro bought 277 acres of the 320-acre property – originally known as Warner Heights – in hopes of building a boutique hotel and selling home sites, with the castle as the centerpiece. The site never opened as a hotel, even though it was completed in 1930. E.A. and Della Tovrea bought 44 of the 277 acres from Carraro in 1931, including the castle, just as the depression hit Phoenix, and Della lived in the castle until her death in 1969. The City of Phoenix bought and restored the castle through a series of bond elections in the 1990s from the Tovrea family. The castle and grounds opened for tours in March 2012 after extensive refurbishing thanks to Tovrea Carraro Society, the nonprofit that operates the castle.

The property is only available to visitors by tour, which are led by guides and consist of a tram ride to explore the cactus gardens before arriving at the castle’s main floor and basement. Tempe Center for the Arts along the Tempe Town Lake waterfront.

TEMPE CENTER FOR THE ARTS The Venue: Along the edge of Tempe Town Lake, the architecturally stunning Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA) is a striking venue situated among a 17-acre art park developed by Design Workshop, a Tempe landscape architecture firm. The venue itself – designed by Tempebased Architekton and award-winning Barton Myers Associates of Los Angeles – celebrates its 10th anniversary season in 2017-2018, which kicked off last month with a performance by Arizona native and American Idol winner Jordin Sparks. TCA houses a state-of-the-art, 600-seat proscenium theater, a 200-seat studio theater, and a 3,500-square-foot gallery. Beyond its performance spaces, its Lakeside room overlooks the lake, with views of the Papago and Camelback mountains, and is available for meetings, banquets and special events. The center is home to a variety of Valley talent, including Tempe Symphony Orchestra, Arizona Wind Symphony, Hayden’s Ferry Chamber Music Series, Childsplay, CONDER/dance, Desert Dance Theatre and Stray Cat Theatre. Seasonal highlights include international street dance sensation Lil Buck (Nov. 11); edgy, versatile and fresh all-female Flor de Toloache (Feb. 3); and VoicePlay, a group of five men who recreate the sound of an entire musical production using nothing but their voices (Feb. 9). Disrupt FEST, the TCA’s signature festival mashup of live music and theater, will expand to two nights this year (April 13-14).

PHOENIX ART MUSEUM The Venue: Phoenix Art Museum has provided access to visual arts and educational programs in Arizona for more than 50 years and, at 285,000 square feet, is the largest art museum in the Southwestern U.S. The

original three-story building was designed by Michigan architect Alden B. Dow, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since opening in 1959, the building has undergone multiple expansions and renovations, now housing multiple wings, a cafe, office spaces, a theater, a sculpture garden, classroom facilities, and multiple galleries. In addition to its annual calendar of critically acclaimed national and international special, short-term exhibitions, Phoenix Art Museum showcases its permanent collection of more than 18,000 works of American, Asian, European, Latin American, Western American, modern and contemporary art, photography, and fashion design. The museum also hosts festivals, a comprehensive film program, live performances and educational programs. www.phxart.org.

THE PHOENIX POLICE MUSEUM The Venue: Other than the uniform and the fact that the police department puts bad guys behind bars, what do you really know about it? The Phoenix Police Museum began as a small exhibit at the Historic City Hall showing a temporary six-month display and then moved to Barrister Place where it was solely run on volunteers and donations, before landing at its current location of Historic City Hall (which was the home of the police department from 1928 to 1975). The museum has been educating the community about the history of the Phoenix Police Department, while promoting and preserving its history, since 1993. Free to experience, it has interesting and exciting exhibits including department badges from throughout the years, uniform patches from around the world, and an area about the Special Assignments Unit (SWAT), as well as information on the landmark Supreme Court case, Arizona v. Miranda. Additional highlights include a dress-up area for children to try on real Phoenix police uniforms, a Sept. 11 remembrance display, and a memorial room dedicated to Phoenix police officers who have died in the line of duty. This fall, the museum will open a new exhibit, Crime Scene Investigation, which will show a mock-up of a crime scene with the various investigative tools that are used to find and recover evidence. The exhibit is suitable for all ages and is not graphic in nature. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. www.phoenixpolicemuseum.org.

HIGHLIGHTS: Infinite Light: A Photographic Meditation on Tibet Through Feb. 18, 2018 Located in the Art of Asia Gallery, explore photojournalist Marissa Roth’s literal and impressionistic views of Tibetan Buddhist practice and devotion, using Kodachrome film during her travels in 2007 and 2010.

Sheila Pepe: Hot Mess Formalism Oct. 14, 2017-Jan. 28, 2018 Composed of more than 70 works, including the premiere of a three-story, site-specific work created exclusively for Phoenix Art Museum, this exhibit will cover more than 20 years of Sheila Pepe's large-scale, ephemeral installations as well as sculptures made out of domestic and industrial fibrous materials.

The Logic of the Copy: Four Decades of Photography in Print Dec. 2, 2017-Apr. 22, 2018 This exhibit brings together artists working with print photographs, beginning in 1960 and ending at the turn of the 21st century when the adoption of digital images transformed photography.

The Venue: Originally founded in 1998 as the Phoenix Family Museum by a small group of Valley volunteers, the Children’s Museum of Phoenix provides a playful learning landscape for adults and children alike. The permanent location opened in 2008 at the restored and renovated Monroe School, bringing a new name to the three-floor building comprised of imaginative play spaces that house more than 300 hands-on experiences. The museum might look like all fun and games, but each exhibit has an educational component. Using motor skills, children are invited to take risks, practice perseverance, build cultural understanding, and explore each interactive exhibit. This month, the museum will open a new working garden where kids can plant seeds, water the garden, and learn about gardening and water conservation with the museum’s “Garden Guru,” plus harvest fruits and veggies when ready. As an added bonus, the museum practices a “Common Sense Green” environmental initiative to help children think and learn about the ecosystem. The museum uses non-toxic materials, instead choosing earth-friendly and sustainable options. Beyond that, hands-on activities with recycled materials and select programs promote environmental consciousness at home. The museum, which will be closed for its annual Spruce Up Oct. 23 through Oct. 30, is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. www.childrensmuseumofphoenix.org.

LASH LOVE Make your peepers pop

A full face of eyeshadow, blush, lipstick and foundation can go a long way, but nothing completes a regimen like look-at-me lashes. And right now, long, luscious lashes are in more than ever. What’s the secret, you ask? We’ve got the lash lowdown: Start with a primer and end with flirty falsies, with a few other steps in between. Amplify your look with these must-haves that will take your lashes from drab to beyond fab.

Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara Complement your smoky shadow and liner with this kohl-pigmented, high-drama mascara. The formula builds bolder, thicker lashes in a super-saturated stroke, working lash by lash. Some mascaras need to be doubled up for duty, but not this one; it works well alone. With a thicker brush, it steadily combs through lashes, working from root to end while freeing lashes of flaking, smudging and clumping. $30 at Saks Fifth Avenue, 602.995.8000. Lancer Lash Serum Intense This just in: Lancer has created a breakthrough serum full of essential vitamins that promise lush, camera-ready lashes. The serum boosts the appearance of thin, sparse lashes naturally with high-performance conditioning agents and pumpkin seed extract. If used daily, the product works toward rebuilding lashes and improving their overall strength, intensifying the effects of mascara use and leaving you with a glam getup. $150 at Saks Fifth Avenue. Givenchy Base Mascara Perfecto Primer This multi-benefit primer is devised to dramatically increase lash volume. Its oneof-a-kind formula, enriched with natural ingredients like cotton nectar and soy proteins, works to

98

improve lash health overnight as you sleep. Upon application, the black fibers of the brush separate and coat the lashes, while the softening white fibers elicit a smooth and sleek application. $29 at Saks Fifth Avenue. Lash Pop Lashes In The Pink Sometimes natural lashes fall short, and that’s where falsies come into play. Rock a natural style (like these) or go for a bold, dramatic pair – locally founded Lash Pop Lashes offers 10 styles, one for every occasion. Don’t let these cruelty-free, synthetic fiber, vegan showstoppers go to waste, as they can be reused up to 10 times with proper care! $5.99 at Lash Pop Lashes, www. lashpoplashes.com. NARS Eyelash Curler If you’re guilty of putting on mascara without using a curler first – stop, drop and curl. With its sleek and cushy design, the NARS curler allows for more control to create elongated and eye-opening lashes. To achieve max curl, place your lashes on the curler and give it a few light squeezes, a can’t-skip step if you’re seeking the perfect finish for your peepers. $20 at Blue Mercury, two locations; www.bluemercury.com.

Between Breast Cancer and Beauty. with Bridging the Gap…

SottoPelle, continuing the legacy of hope by Rachell Hall, founder of Bridging the Gap Foundation and owner of Classic Beauty Permanent Make-up

sponsoring the Art with a Heart for Women event.

THE MISSION at Bridging the Gap is to help breast cancer survivors in their complete aesthetic recovery after breast cancer. What so many do not realize is that after mastectomy surgery and reconstruction, many women are left without nipples and areola. This makes it uncomfortable for many women to undress at a gym, spa or dressing room. But even more devastating is a mother fearful to undress around a young daughter wanting to protect the child from the fear that this could someday happen to her, as well. At BTGF we proudly educate, empower and assist women in, what they always exclaim is “the icing on the cake”; 3D nipple tattoo known as Breasthetics. This allows women to feel whole, complete and fully restored after the long journey of breast cancer survival. BTGF is a grassroots effort to assist women in their breast aesthetic recovery. Our mission is not to run for the cure but to sit quietly in our own community changing the lives of women, literally, hands on…one by one. We are the only solution for women that are uninsured, underinsured or otherwise unable to pay for their completed reconstruction. This year three amazing artists have come together to help this cause; artists Lucie Marlo, Antonio Bellini and Pea Argo. Photo by Pamela Nicole of Femme Art Boudoir

It’s finally prime time to park yourself on a patio, and, pretty soon, the warmth of a fire will be a welcome addition. Brown Jordan’s Kove fire table offers both style and functionality – as a table and fire pit in one – with a selection of four colors (bone is pictured). Power this modern-classic masterpiece with natural gas, liquid propane or clean-burning bioethanol fuel; the latter has no harmful emissions, smoke, soot or ash and can even be used indoors. Constructed from proprietary composite concrete, Kove is durable, yet lightweight (it’s just shy of 142 pounds), and has a convenient ledge that accommodates food and beverages. A bonus: Articulating feet and no hard utility connections make the fire table easy to move, whether that’s to a new spot in your backyard or a new location altogether. ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH Banff and Jasper offer a picturesque peek at the Canadian peaks

BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM / PHOTOS BY FAIRMONT HOTELS

The Canadian Rockies are magical, with breathtaking natural scenery and countless wow-factor moments. Banff and Jasper national parks, in Alberta, are both designated UNESCO World Heritage sites, filled with glacier-fed lakes, but also home to luxury hotels, small towns and impressive cuisine.

Exploring Banff Created in 1885, Banff National Park is one of the oldest parks in North America. One of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, it is known for rushing waterfalls and snow-capped mountain peaks that offer visitors a playground for skiing, mountain climbing, biking, and soaking in its thermal baths. The town of Banff is Canada’s highest, at 4,540 feet above sea level, but surrounded by even higher peaks. Unusual for most towns, Banff – with a permanent population of 9,500 residents – is entirely within the national park. In fact, no one can live there unless they work in Banff National Park. As you walk through Banff, it’s common to see deer, elk and even bison, while bighorn sheep graze along the roadsides. Because of the plentiful bison, you’ll find many restaurants featuring the local game. Stop downtown at The Bison and head upstairs to the dining room for beautiful mountain views and Chef David Cousineau’s bison carpaccio. For an entree, the Carmen Creek bison rib-eye steak is an incredible cut of meat, though bison isn’t the only local meat Chef Cousineau serves up. The gnocchi poutine is as Canadian as it gets, with 24-hour braised elk served over gnocchi with truffled gravy and cheese curds. Get a lay of the land by riding the Banff Gondola up to the top of Sulphur Mountain. Open in both summer and winter, the trip takes about 10 minutes and gives you an impressive view of the area.

Fairmont Banff Springs Fairmont Banff Springs is the town’s crown jewel. The Canadian Pacific Railway opened this “Castle in the Rockies” more than 125 years ago. When you arrive, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into another world. It’s a pleasant walk from the hotel into downtown Banff, but it’s hard to pull yourself away from the so-called castle. The Fairmont’s Willow Stream Spa is one such draw; the retreat boasts waterfalls and a mineral pool, offering an idyllic sanctuary. Be sure to also head outdoors where you can soak up the alpine air in the hot tub any time of the year. There’s something enchanting about enjoying a hot soak with snow gently falling around you, or soaking during the summer while listening to the quake of the aspen.

There is a multitude of dining options at Fairmont Banff Springs. The Lookout Patio has to be one of the best patios in the world – sip a cocktail while you watch elk grazing below. Waldhaus Restaurant is a Bavarian eatery reminiscent of a German hunting lodge, where the seasonal menu always features Canadian beef along with German schnitzel and cheese fondue.

Jasper National Park Nearby, Jasper National Park is home to the town of Jasper, which is even smaller than Banff, with only 5,250 residents and also entirely inside the national park. Jasper National Park was established in 1907 and is the world’s second largest dark sky preserve, making this an incredible spot for stargazing. Head to Maligne Lake, the largest glacially fed lake in the Canadian Rockies; it stretches about 14 miles and is surrounded by 11,000-foot peaks. A great way to see the area, including nearby Pyramid Lake, is to book a tour with Sun Dog Tours, whose guides will also point out the local wildlife.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge An ideal place to stay while visiting is the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge situated on the shores of Lac Beauvert. This year-round resort offers golfing, hiking, horseback riding, ice skating, skiing or simply relaxing. You will stay in beautiful chalets or cabins connected to the main lodge by paths that wrap around the lake. At the heart of the lodge is the Great Hall, where you can enjoy the crackling fire and order drinks before dinner. There are a number of dining options, from The Moose’s Nook Chophouse, serving wild game and organic meats, to ORSO Trattoria, which has partnered with Twin Meadows Farms to bring a local twist to Northern Italian cuisine. Be sure to head to ORSO for a stunning breakfast buffet each morning.

Getting to Banff and Jasper The beauty of the national parks is that they are isolated. There are no direct flights into either town; the closest airport is Calgary, about 80 miles from Banff (though about 250 miles from Jasper), and airport shuttles are available. Another luxurious option for those traveling from May through October is to plan a train journey aboard Rocky Mountaineer, which travels from Seattle or Vancouver into either Banff or Jasper, with options for staying at the Fairmont properties. Just be sure to book well in advance. Truly, the Canadian Rockies are some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world, no matter what time of the year you embark on your journey.

2017 CHEVROLET BOLT For most drivers, this all-electric vehicle is all you will ever need BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $37,495 (before federal tax credit)

When it comes to all-electric vehicles (EVs), most of the news has been about Tesla’s Model 3, which launched in the summer. But another EV that should be getting attention is the Chevrolet Bolt – General Motor’s electric game-changer vehicle. Chevy Bolt is significant because it’s the first EV that eliminates all the objections to buying and driving an EV. Range anxiety? Bolt can go 238 miles before needing a recharge, a driving range that breaks new ground, with ample margin for emergencies. By comparison, Nissan Leaf’s range is 107 miles, and Volkswagen boasts a 125-mile range for the Golf EV. Too expensive? You can buy a Bolt for $29,995, after a federal tax credit of $7,500. Not enough power? The Bolt goes from zero to 60 mph in less than seven seconds, on par with a V-6 Chevy Camaro. Another huge advantage is that the Bolt will be inexpensive to operate. No oil changes, a brake pad replacement is virtually unnecessary because of regenerative braking, and you’ll never need to buy gasoline. At current residential electric rates, owners will pay about four cents per

108

mile to drive a Bolt. Gasoline-powered cars that get 30 mpg pay more than double that. I recently drove a Bolt EV, and the big surprise is that it’s nothing short of a superb experience with powerful acceleration, and a drive system that uses a single, high-capacity electric motor for propulsion. In fact, it might be one of the most fun driving experiences I’ve had in a very long time. It’s especially easy to maneuver in traffic, a snap to park, and there’s ample power for passing or getting up to highway speeds. The Bolt is a five-passenger, five-door hatchback that Chevy calls a wagon and comes in two trim levels: LT and Premier. Inside, it feels like it has a lot of space; it’s a bit narrow but not crowded. The interior isn’t as luxurious, but that’s more of a criticism of design rather build quality. The switchgear and touch points feel great and are ergonomically pleasing. Controls are intuitive and easy to use, and operating knobs have a nice rubber strip around them. Overall, I think the Bolt is the best mainstream EV yet, with a useful driving range, affordable purchase price, low operating cost, and an especially rewarding driving experience.

Price as tested: $42,855 Seating: 5 Engine: Single, high-capacity electric motor Horsepower: 200 Fuel economy: 128/110 mpg city/highway Fab features: 238-mile driving range Powerful, linear engine performance Exceptional driving experience

Cloth & Flame takes outdoor dining to a stunning new level

BY CHELSEA YOUNG

Dining under the stars, whether among the red rocks of Sedona, riverside in Verde Valley, or beneath Flagstaff’s aspen trees, is a feast for the senses. The taste and aroma of a chef-prepared meal mingles with that of fresh air, forests or the desert in bloom, while the outdoor surroundings offer a captivating sight. Locally based Cloth & Flame conceptualized just that, and brought this one-of-a-kind culinary adventure to life in 2016. The outdoor dining and luxury retreat company offers private farm-to-table dining experiences in the great outdoors, including right here in the Phoenix area as well as further locales like Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Portland, Oregon; and Carmel Valley, California. The idea behind Cloth & Flame is rooted in creators Matt Cooley and Olivia Laux’s belief that people work to protect things they’ve experienced firsthand. Their hope is that as more people visit the West’s wilderness areas – and experience their beauty in a responsible way – the more apt they will be to protect them. In fact, the goal of Cloth & Flame is to “indulge with a purpose.” Cooley

110

So Scottsdale! October '17

and Laux pay to lease land for each dinner, so areas that might otherwise be developed can act as a source of income for the landowner, ultimately preserving the land. They also donate 10 percent of each dinner’s proceeds to land conservation efforts. Menus are posted online one week prior to each event, while the chef is usually announced a month ahead of time. Upon arrival, up to 80 guests are greeted with an idyllic scene of rustic, romantic decor that complements the outdoor surroundings, setting the tone for a gourmet oasis seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Because of their unique locations and menus, the intimate experiences vary, though all begin with a craft cocktail and welcome appetizer, followed by a fourcourse meal paired with wine. A local chef prepares the meals on-site using locally sourced ingredients inspired by the surroundings, and, at the start of each course, diners are privy to the chef’s expert musings on each dish and its ingredients. For local dinners, guests meet at Cloth & Flame’s Phoenix facility near Deer Valley Airport and are then driven into the desert. For out-of-area dinners, guests can drive themselves to the dinner, though for those in hard-to-reach wilderness areas, guests gather at a predetermined meeting point and are then transported to the dinner site. Upcoming culinary experiences include: Florence Wine Brunch (Oct. 15), Superstition Mountains Desert Dinner (Oct. 28), and a Taliesin West Dinner in partnership with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation (Nov. 11). Cloth & Flame events are open to ages 21 and over, and advanced reservations are required. Tickets range from $135 to $155 per person, which includes gratuity and beverage pairings. Some dietary restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice. For more information, visit www.clothandflame.com.

The menus at Andaz Scottsdale’s Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen take “local first” to a whole new level. Executive Chef Adam Sheff’s avocado toast ($14), available until 3 p.m. daily, starts with Wildflower Bread ciabatta, which he drizzles with Queen Creek Olive Oil before grilling. Sheff then chars avocados on the grill before mashing them with cilantro and lime juice (how Arizonans “do” avocados) and spreading on the bread. Next, he adds a fried Hickman’s egg and cress, a spicier version of watercress that looks like a delicate desert flower. To finish, he tops it with homemade lemon preserves – in homage to Arizona’s abundance of citrus – olive oil, Aleppo pepper and salt. Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen, 6114 N. GET IN THE SPIRIT This season’s brand-new beverage offerings

Each year, to take advantage of the cooler weather and as a precursor of the holiday season, elite beverage brands release limited-edition and seasonal offerings across the globe. Here are some of our favorites now available.

Ardbeg An Oa Ardbeg has been among the top-rated malt Scotch whiskies in the world for more than 200 years. A smoky variation on traditional malt scotch while still approachable for novice aficionados, An Oa is Ardbeg’s first new offering in a decade. Silky with hints of creamy toffee, anise and even a hint of milk chocolate, this seductive scotch is pitch-perfect for fall and winter days (and especially nights). $76.99 at BevMo!, Total Wine & More and Fox Cigar Bar.

Ciroc French Vanilla Vodka Unlike most other vodkas, Ciroc is produced from grapes, versus corn or grains. It is also distilled five times before any flavor infusions, including this new release. To marry both the creamy French and rich vanilla bean flavors together without overpowering the vodka, a master distiller infuses the liquor with vanillas from all over the world, from Guatemala to Madagascar, and then lets it finish in a custom-made copper pot in Southern France, which produces a richer texture. $27.99 at BevMo! and Total Wine & More.

Crown Royal Salted Caramel Whisky In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth became the first reigning monarchs to visit Canada. To woo them, a Canadian spirits entrepreneur set out to craft a whisky suited for the royal couple as a gift – and after 600 blends, Crown Royal was born. Nearly 80 years later comes Crown Royal Salted Caramel. Available through Dec. 31, this limited-edition spirit is a blend of 50 different whiskies aged in charred oak barrels and then infused with luscious caramel and sea salts. $19.99 at BevMo! and Total Wine & More.

Glenmorangie Astar Initially released in 2008, Glenmorangie Astar Scotch whisky is back for a limited run now through the end of the year. A scotch entirely matured in bespoke oak, Astar’s extraordinary wood casks are hewn from hand-selected oak trees in the Ozark Mountains and meticulously crafted to exacting specifications to ensure they impart maximum flavor. The casks are so rare that it has taken all these years to re-create and build upon the initial release – and it does not disappoint. $110.99 at BevMo!, Total Wine & More and Fox Cigar Bar.

Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch – Wine Cask Earlier this year, Johnnie Walker announced Blenders’ Batch, a global experimental program highlighting the art of blending. Through it, Johnnie Walker is releasing limited-edition experimental whiskies to challenge convention and provide unparalleled insight into the skill and never-ending pursuit of flavor that drives Master Blender Dr. Jim Beveridge. This newest release is partially matured in wine casks for more than two years. It boasts notes of orchard fruit and red berries that enhance the malt flavors in an unexpectedly vibrant way. $39.99 at BevMo! and Total Wine & More.

AUTUMNAL ESSENCE SOL Cocina’s Pumpkin Spice Margarita

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH BARRY

SOL Cocina’s most popular fall cocktail, the Pumpkin Spice Margarita ($10), has the farmers market to thank for its conception. “Every month, we head out to the farmers market to seek out ingredients for this ever-changing experimental margarita,” says Colin Pflugradt, beverage director at SOL Cocina. “And every year, we turned to the pumpkin with the crazy idea to put it into a margarita.” According to Pflugradt, they tried everything from making their own puree to roasting it in-house, but to no avail. The flavor profile just didn’t work – until they came across Libby’s 100% Pure Pumpkin Pie Mix. “We only deal in fresh ingredients, so, at first, the idea of a mix was out,” Pflugradt says. “But, Libby’s is all-natural – it goes from the seed to the can right in the U.S. – and has zero perservatives, so we gave it a shot.” First, Pflugradt mixes equal parts Libby’s and fresh-squeezed lime juice, which balances the sweetness of the pie flavor while enhancing the spice notes. After shaking, he adds nectar sourced directly from the agave plant, and then, of course, tequila. “We prefer Don Julio Blanco for its crispness and sweet finish. It bridges the flavors of the lime and agave nectar while balancing the pumpkin pie’s strong spice elements,” Pflugradt says. The final product is strained into a bucket glass over ice and dusted with cinnamon, then garnished with a lime wheel and cinnamon stick. “Think boozy, adult pumpkin pie in a glass,” says Pflugradt, who is known for offering free samples to skeptics. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Jean-Christophe Gros of Voilà French Bistro

A native of the Vosges region of France, Jean-Christophe Gros and his wife Ségolène own and operate Voilà French Bistro, where Gros also serves as executive chef, focusing on expertly crafted French classics.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

How did you get your start cooking? When I was a young child in France, I loved helping my mother in the kitchen. By age 15, she saw my passion grow and helped me get accepted into a one-week discovery stage – think a one-week chance to shadow the pros – at a Michelin-starred restaurant. At the close of the week, I enrolled in culinary school and haven’t left the kitchen since. And your formal start in the industry? From ages 16 to 19, I apprenticed 15 hours a day, 21 days a month, using the off week to attend culinary school. Those first years were decisive for my career because, alongside different chefs, I was able to progress and learn different techniques that helped build my foundation. How did you make your way to Arizona? My wife and I delighted in visiting the U.S. annually for more than a decade. In 2007, we came to Arizona to visit the Grand Canyon. We stayed in Scottsdale for one night and immediately fell in love with the city. We always knew we wanted it to be our home. So, in 2015, we decided to make a big move – we purchased Voilà from a fellow French chef who was retiring and moved to the U.S. to realize our dream. Tell us about the menu at Voilà. Though many people suggested I develop an Americanized French menu for the masses, I just couldn’t do it. It wouldn’t be me. Our menu, as a result, is 100 percent traditional French cuisine. My goal is to show people that French food is more than onion soup and escargot. What is your favorite food to eat when you’re not working? I love ribs and fries! Voilà French Bistro, 10135 E. TRICKY TREATS 10 sweets that will surely surprise

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Arrogant Butcher

The Treat: Warm Peanut Butter Cup, $7 The Trick: Here’s a melty, gooey Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup – with a twist! This sinfully tricky treat starts with a rich peanut butter mousse and is topped with a scoop of homemade chocolate ice cream in the center, giving the effect of an actual Reese’s cup, with the appearance of being inside out. A bonus: The chef makes his own peanut butter cookies to go with each “cup,” so the dessert also acts like a sweet dip for the cookies. 2 E. Jefferson St., Phoenix; 602.324.8502; www.foxrc.com.

Barrio Café

The Treat: Churros Rellenos de Cajeta de Cabra, $10 The Trick: Everyone loves churros – traditionally deep fried and portable. But these are a little different, in the best possible way. Rather than simply coating them with cinnamon and handing them to guests, Barrio fills them with cajeta – or caramelized goat milk – and tops them with two heaping scoops of vanilla ice cream and candied pecans. 2814 N. 16th St., Phoenix; 602.636.0240; www.barriocafe.com.

Camp Social

The Treat: S’mores, $10 The Trick: Sure, several Valley hot spots serve “elevated s’more” dishes, but not many give you the chance to fire them up yourself in a personal tableside cauldron. The marshmallows and graham crackers boast a little surprise as well – each are handcrafted daily by an on-site pastry chef. 6107 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 480.750.0506; www.campsocial.com.

Do you miss going trick-or-treating now that you’re a grown-up? Well, miss it no more, as some local restaurants offer sweet treats, each with a deliciously tricky twist. Whether the tricks are played on the eyes, nose or taste buds, you can expect the unexpected when ordering dessert at the following 10 restaurants.

The Treat: Chocolate Mousse Tower, $10 The Trick: The granddaddy of tricky desserts, this iconic tower of tastiness has been shocking and aweing guests for over a decade. This half-foot tall dessert, a literal tower of sweet and creamy goodness, not only defies gravity, but hides three different kinds of chocolate within. 2502 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 602.522.2344; www.christophersaz.com.

Gertrude’s

The Treat: Carrot Custard, $9 The Trick: It’s carrot cake – or is it? This deconstructed and playful twist on its more traditional cousin is a dessert tailor-made for fall, featuring chilled layers of homemade carrot custard, coconut creme and candied walnuts, each reminiscent of flavors found in carrot cake. But the chef also adds layers of waffle crisps for crunch and Thai tea gelée, which results in an added level of complexity and texture. At Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix; 480.719.8600; www.gertrudesrestaurant.net.

Roaring Fork

The Treat: Ancho Chile Torte, $8 The Trick: This gluten-free treat (a trick itself) has an unexpected element in each delicious bite – locally sourced, and very potent, ancho chili powder. The powder not only adds unexpected spice to the dessert, but it exponentially enhances the dark chocolate torte’s flavor. And that’s before it is topped with amaretto, cinnamon-infused whipped cream and fresh berries. 4800 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.947.0795; www.roaringfork.com.

Salty Sow

The Treat: Bananas Foster Beignets, $7 The Trick: Everyone’s favorite Big Easy dessert has a secret center at Salty Sow: bananas! Topped with cane syrup, honey and nutmeg ice cream to enhance the sweetness of the banana, at first glance these may look like the traditional New Orleans favorite, but they have a taste all their own. 4801 E. Cactus Road, Phoenix; 602.795.9463; www.saltysow.com.

The Canal Club at The Scott

The Treat: Snowy Forest, $10 The Trick: This dish includes cocoa “soil” (powdered cocoa), arugula pearls, broken meringue, wild berry sorbet, flowers, and blood orange “snow” – they use a special process to make orange gelée look like snow – all arranged to look like an actual snowy forest, even smelling a bit floral. It tricks and tantalizes each of the senses from the time it arrives at the table to the time you finish the last bite. 4925 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.424.6095; www.thescottresort.com.

Christopher’s & Crush Lounge, Chocolate Mousse Tower

La Hacienda

The Treat: Strawberry Tacos The Trick: It might look like you’re about to enjoy a traditional taco Tuesday when you see this plate, but this dish is actually a dreamy strawberry lime cheesecake topped with strawberry lime salsa and nestled into a white chocolate-dipped (and fried) tortilla. Oh, and the kick at the end is the hint of Patron XO the chef sneaks onto the plate as an added surprise. At Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, 7575 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale; 480.585.4848; www.scottsdaleprincess.com.

Le Macaron

The Treat: Ice Cream Macaron, $3.75 each The Trick: Usually, macarons are filled with a luscious cream or jelly, but these have a supercool surprise inside – rich, delicious ice cream. Thicker and frostier than traditional macaroons, they come in five flavors including traditional vanilla or strawberry as well as the more exotic options of mango, coffee and green tea. 15323 N. End NEW IN TOWN

900 DEGREES OF DELICIOUS The Covenant opens in Paradise Valley

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS COURTESY OF WHITE LILY FILMS

Carri Gardner will tell you that her newly opened restaurant, The Covenant, was oh-so kismet. Or perhaps more precisely, “O.H.S.O.” kismet. “I worked in the restaurant industry when I was younger and loved it,” says Gardner. “I went to work in medical sales rather than follow my dream of going into the restaurant business, though, as practically got the better of me.” Fast-forward nearly a decade to 2014, when a chance meeting over craft beer would change the course of her life forever. “One night, I was at O.H.S.O. Brewery Arcadia and met a cute guy named Jon,” Gardner says. “But he wasn’t just a random bar patron – he owned the place.” Jon was Jon Lane, who has grown the nano-brewery from one location to three in recent years. Lane and Gardner shared a passion for the restaurant industry from the start, and love quickly bloomed. The pair married earlier this year in Tulum, Mexico. “While dating, I shared many of my culinary concepts with Jon as well as his concept partner, Brian Roehrich,” Gardner says. “I knew I wanted to finally take a leap; I just needed the right location.”

130

So Scottsdale! October '17

Earlier this year, she found her location: A 4,000-square-foot space on the northwest corner of Tatum and Shea, which happens to be right next door to O.H.S.O. Paradise Valley. “I wanted something a little more elegant, yet still approachable, for people in the neighborhood who all too often have to venture elsewhere for date night or happy hour,” says Gardner, who worked with Roehrich to design the space with chandeliers, a massive bar, and floor-to-ceiling wine storage enclosed in glass – complete with a spiral staircase as a focal point. There is also a cozy coffee nook, with a goal of acting as a neighborhood workspace and morning meeting locale for the local community before switching over for lunch and dinner service. And dining is an experience in and of itself, with an open kitchen where guests can watch the chefs in action as well as marvel at the 900-degree, wood-fired grills. And, thanks to Executive Chef Rich Putman, they are being used for far more than wood-fired pizzas. Actually, pizza isn’t even on the menu! Instead, the menu boasts a variety of items inspired by Gardner’s Midwest youth (think hearty short ribs), her recent Mexico wedding (hello, fresh ceviche), and even her life today in the Valley (vegetarian dishes and lighter fare abounds). “Our cocktail program is equally inspired. I’m most proud of the Farmer’s Market cocktail, which changes seasonally and is 100 percent locally sourced.” Equally as impressive is the wine list, which boasts more than 70 wines by the bottle and 30 by the glass. The Covenant’s coffee bar is open daily from 7 to 11 a.m.; the restaurant is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to close and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to close (with brunch on weekends). 4740 E.
