hen you think of polo, you don’t typically think of canine couture. Or high tea. Or a party tent. Or the symphony. Or a live art auction. The world’s “longest” fashion show. Or a showcase of amazing cars. Welcome to the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses & Horsepower, America’s largest polo event, which is turning the polo world upside down. The event (which drew a crowd of over 12,000 last year!) not only showcases some of the best polo in the world, but includes all of the above, plus more. It’s an event for everyone. This year we had the honor of featuring one of the stars in this issue—Kareem Rosser, who is known as the greatest African-American polo player of all time. His story is one of triumph, of a young child finding refuge from a bad neighborhood in the nearby stables, and then realizing that he excelled at the sport. Read all about his journey, as well as his take on this year’s polo event, on page 44. And then mark your calendar for Oct. 24 and plan to go—I promise that it will be a great time! In this issue we also showcase the multitude of new urban living options that are available—you know you’ve seen all of the construction around town and wondered about each locale! If you’re looking for a new place to live, these destinations offer some amazing amenities, plus are in great locations. Check out all of the new options on page 51. There is so much more packed into this issue as well—fall fashions (pg. 100), tons of events (pg. 66) and stories on some inspiring people (pg. 29). Enjoy—and see you at polo!

QUESTION: What is your favorite book, and why? “My favorite book, as corny as it may sound, is Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. It was the first time I related so closely to a character. I understood Jo March’s need to be an individual and her desire to write and tell stories. I shared her dreams and understood when she described feeling slightly out of place. I related to her quest to fulfill her dreams.”

mplete o c o t e c n a n e maint From simple rown’s B , g in ll e s r o ying overhauls, bu ance. t is d e h t s e o g Classic Autos

From its humble beginnings over sixty years ago, in 1953 – when Walter Brown, Sr. bought eight hundred dollars’ worth of clunky old cars to fix up for his used car lot – Brown’s Classic Autos has undergone a perpetual metamorphosis: continually improving, striving for excellence in all facets. Under the expert guidance of Walter’s son, Walt Brown, Jr., it has grown into the thriving enterprise you see embodied in every stunning car that rolls out of their facility. The largest classic car dealer in the West, Brown’s has firmly established its reputation for premium service. It’s what customers have come to expect from this family business in its six decades of operation, and nothing less will do when it comes to carrying on the legacy. The latest development in Brown’s everimproving repertoire is the consignment of late-model, used, and highline cars. Due to popular demand, you are now able to sell your vehicles at Brown’s Classic Autos without the haggling and low-balling you’d encounter at a traditional used car dealership – and without the hassle of selling it yourself – all while enjoying the impeccable customer service that Brown’s is renowned for. Say you have a third weekend car – an SL or Porsche, for example – sitting in your garage, and you’re not sure what to do with it. You don’t want to take it to a dealership, where you’ll almost certainly walk away with much less than the car is worth. But selling it on eBay is a lot of work, and you just can’t field all those phone calls. The answer is Brown’s! Whether buying, selling, or trading, vintage or late model, Brown’s Classic Autos strives to deliver the ultimate car enthusiast experience every time, making your transactions as smooth as fresh asphalt.

Customers of Brown’s are often pleasantly surprised to discover just how far-reaching their scope of service actually is – especially now that consignment has been added to the extensive list. While classic cars may be what the business is best known for, Brown’s Classic Autos extends beyond the vehicles of bygone days. It’s a broad-spectrum car company, able to meet the needs of any automobile owner, from a simple oil change or a nut and bolt restoration. Brown’s is able to provide expert maintenance and repair services for cars of any age, a one-stop shop for whatever its clients require. Another impressive, yet lesser-known feature is the luxury of a concierge service: customers can store their cars at Brown’s, and pick them up – sparkling clean, full of gas, and ready to go – for as long as they want to drive them, with one simple phone call. Of course, Brown’s is still in the business of custom work and restomods, with master builder and partner Tony Arme and his crew bringing visions into road-ready reality, as well as world class and award winning excellence. While renowned for being a gifted customizer – Tony is often touted as being the next Chip Foose – he is also a proficient fabricator and skilled mechanic. He spends anywhere from months to years perfecting each project, creating a masterful fusion of today’s technology and timeless vintage style, crafting a finished product that is remarkable both inside and out. For the Brown’s team, who are each truly, madly passionate about all things automotive, quality is of the utmost importance. The business has recently relocated to a contemporary, spacious 30,000 square-foot

SS_19_25IN_Oct15.indd 25

101 – and if you’ve never seen the new facility, it’s a sight to behold. In the state-of-the art showroom, the diverse inventory gleams like jewels bathed in spotlights, magnificent in curvaceous chrome or sleek with sharp racing stripes. Some are poised to dominate the open road in a breathtaking blaze of power and performance, others ready for a leisurely cruise down memory lane. But whether the engine purrs or roars, these cars are designed to turn heads and drop jaws – and more importantly, to capture the sheer exhilaration of the joyride. The showroom isn’t the only notable area in the new digs: Brown’s also boasts an expansive space that can be used to host events. It was a must-have for owner Walt Jr., who is well-known for his philanthropic efforts, donating countless hours and dollars toward fostering good through charitable organizations such as Phoenix Childrens Hospital, Foundations for the Blind, Cox Charities, ChildHelp, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation (just to name a few). The facility’s highly visible location in close proximity to both the BarrettJackson auto auction and TPC Scottsdale, home of the largest golf tournament in the world, makes it the perfect place to showcase worthy causes – but the space is also available for more personal events, too, such as birthday or anniversary parties or receptions for those seeking a fun and unique alternative to ballrooms or club venues. With a 2015 study showing that classic cars are outperforming global stocks in terms

of investments, all eyes are on the vintage automobile industry, and Brown’s showroom is constantly updating with fresh inventory to meet the steadily growing demand. But car owners of all makes and models can now find exactly what they need with Brown’s extensive range of services. Whether buying or selling, major or minor, each transaction is executed by a trusted company whose pride and love of their craft is evident in every perfectly-polished machine. “Car enthusiast” is an understatement, a lackluster phrase that does no justice to the dedication displayed by the team who buys, sells, customizes, and restores. Brown’s Classic Autos is the ideal place not only for avid collectors, but for anyone who has ever wanted to roll down the windows and feel the thrill of the ride. Come and experience all the exciting services Brown’s has to offer at 9024 East Bahia Drive in Scottsdale, call 480-998-4300, or visit the newly-updated website at www.brownsclassicautos.com.

CHAD PATTON Making transportation glamorous BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

s with so many Arizonans, golf brought Chad Patton to the state. The Kansas native headed to Florida to attend college, and then jumped at a chance to pursue a golf career in the Phoenix area. He never could have imagined, however, that in two decades he would be a leader in the transportation and logistics industry. continued‌ OCTOBER 2015 |

up close Creating a Winning Model Patton left his hometown in Kansas and headed for Florida Southern College to pursue his love of golf. When he was offered an opportunity to leave college for a position in Arizona, he jumped at it. “College just wasn’t right for me,” explains Patton. “It’s just not right for everyone.” Over the years, Patton pursued a lot of interests, most of them involving sales. He credits his father for his work ethic. “I grew up on a ranch in Kansas. Early on my father told me, ‘One thing I’m going to teach you is how to work hard.’ And that’s what I learned from him,” he explains. Patton says he didn’t appreciate it so much as a teenager, especially when his friends quit coming around for fear the elder Patton would put them all to work checking fences. But today he is grateful, and hard work has definitely paid off for him. Today, Patton’s career in the transportation industry has turned into a gold mine. “Transportation isn’t really sexy,” laughs Patton. “Freight might not be the most glamorous profession, but the transportation world has its finger on the pulse of the world’s economy.” In May 2012, Patton and his business partner, Carson Holmquist, founded Stream Logistics. The concept is unique

in the transportation industry. “It’s a boutique-style company,” explains Patton. “We want quality over quantity. We focus on customer service. We hire people, not paper. We actually prefer to hire young people without experience so we can mold them.” Stream Logistics, which started inauspiciously enough in Patton’s kitchen (“Every company has to start somewhere,” jokes Patton), focuses on high-end manufacturing companies. “We ship the alphabet,” he says, laughing, “but not every customer is a fit for us.” Stream Logistics is what is known in the industry as a 3PL—a third-party logistics firm. They sell knowledge. They know the equipment providers. They know the best suppliers. Patton and his company focus on the logistics so that a manufacturing company can specialize in what it does best—creating a product. It’s up to Patton to make certain the product gets where it needs to go.

It’s All About the People Stream Logistics (www.streamlogistics. com) started out small with just three employees and, by focusing on the people, grew rapidly. Just three years later, the multi-million dollar company employs about 20, has more than 100 clients, and

makes more than 60 shipments every day. “It’s all about the people,” Patton explains. “The relationships are key. We take care of the people we hire. I truly believe you are who you hire.” Patton says it is important for all Stream Logistics employees to be polished. “They have to interface with people all day.” To ensure this goes smoothly, Patton works with his employees to master phone, email, and face-to-face communications.

Success Comes Fast Since those first days back in 2012, Patton has watched the company expand exponentially. The company recently moved into new headquarters in Optima Sonoran Village near Camelback and Scottsdale roads. “Sometimes we don’t get a chance to sit back and watch the growth,” laments Patton. But he doesn’t forget to give back. Stream Logistics launched a partnership on Jan. 1, 2015 with Phoenix Children’s Hospital. They donate dollars for every load they book. “It has been a life-changing experience,” Patton says. “We cut them a check every month.”

Time for Fun Patton works a lot of hours—so many that he no longer plays the golf that brought him to the Valley—but he does find time to enjoy Arizona and embrace his love of the outdoors. “I’m a huge fitness fanatic,” he explains. “Fitness and health are still an important part of my life.” While he loves living in Arizona— being outside 365 days a year, feeling the great energy of the sun, and savoring all the amazing new restaurants—he also has a passion for exploring the world. “I love to travel,” he says. “I’ve been to Maui and Spain this year, and am heading to Australia this fall.” And for the future of Stream Logistics and his vision of a boutiquestyle transportation company? “We’re going to keep ramping it up, continuing to expand, and hiring good people.”

SAVING TIME, SAVING LIVES A Valley doctor creates an innovative medical app BY MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON

A

few years ago, while on call for two Valley hospitals, Dr. Gregory Grant, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, grew frustrated. Like usual, he received calls asking for his expertise–but to see the patient files, he had to go into the office or the hospital. He thought that there had to be a more efficient way for physicians to review patient information and make a diagnosis. It was then that the idea for Photon, a HIPAA-compliant messaging platform centered on a patient’s chart, was born. Fast-forward to now, and “a Photon chart contains all of the information a doctor needs—anything they could receive logging into the hospital system,” Grant explains. Through his company, Photon Medical Communications, the platform is now in use by thousands of doctors of all specialties across the country. In addition to his role with the startup, Grant is also the chairman of orthopaedics and medical director of orthopaedic emergency services at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea, and chairman of surgery at Phoenix St. Luke’s Hospital and Medical Center. “It’s all about saving time and saving lives,” Grant says. To learn more about Photon, visit www.photonmed.net.

Etc.

What should locals know about Photon? We started here in Arizona and are in the process of networking several Arizona hospitals. I’m an Arizona native and it means a lot to me to grow in my home state. You mentioned that Photon is dedicated to employing veterans… I learned how hard it can be for veterans to readjust to civilian life and I wanted to do my part to help those who served our country. We hire vets all around the country trained in Photon to explain to hospitals in their area how the program works. They’re our “boots on the ground,” so to speak. Where do you see Photon going in the future? We have too big of a technology to keep running it ourselves. I predict that some “big monster” will swoop us up and buy us. It’s just a matter of time. I am so tired of this stubborn double chin – but plastic surgery isn’t an option. Is there an easier way to get rid of it?

A:

As a matter of fact, there IS! It’s called Kybella™, and it’s a noninvasive, FDA-approved injection that is proven to reduce excess “wobble” from the chin and jawline. Its active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, naturally occurs in the body and is responsible for the breakdown and absorption of the fat we eat. Kybella™ actually destroys the fat cells – and once they’re gone, there’s no re-treatment required. The injections bring little to no discomfort and tighten up the double chin without the expense and downtime of surgery. Chin up (literally!) – Kybella™ is at Spectrum Dermatology! “POM” AND CIRCUMSTANCE Heather Logan finds success with Pomchies BY SHANA SCHWARZ

“I

t all started with scraps,” says Heather Logan. “Pomchies were invented while trying to figure out a way to use the scraps from a swimwear factory. I had been selling children’s sun protective swimwear and the factory in Australia searched for a way to use the leftover fabric.” And thus, these cute accessories were born. From headbands to bows to bracelets and more, Pomchies, as she called them, can be made in a myriad of colors. Logan had lived all over the world– with stops in Wisconsin, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Beijing, Texas, California and China–before ending up in Arizona. “I ended up in Phoenix in 2006 with our two boys and my company, Pomchies,” says Logan. “Pomchies has grown tremendously in the last three years due to the help of my wonderful husband, Harry. Pomchie products are a unique way to show spirit or add color to your life. With over a thousand unique color combinations, the possibilities are endless. Wear them in your hair, on your ankles, or around your wrists; use them as napkin rings or table decorations; use them to show spirit for your favorite team; add some fun to your uniform; or anything else you can imagine.” Visit www.pomchies.com for more information.

Etc.

If you could have a celebrity spokesperson for Pomchies, who would it be and why? Taylor Swift. She is an amazing young woman with great style. I know she would love our products, too. What’s your favorite color combination when you’re making Pomchies? Well, I love purple, but we have fun making up all the color combinations and names for the Pomchies. However, almost every day I’m wearing a purple Pomchie combination to workout with! What’s in a name? A Pomchie is a pom-pom that met a scrunchie. We are “America’s Favorite Fun Accessories Company.” We are also a locally and nationally certified woman-owned business.

t’s no surprise that someone who can design your home to look amazing also dresses impeccably. “I’m a high-end, award-winning interior designer; my firm provides boutiquelike services to clients who are looking for more unique and less formulistic interiors,” says Ernesto Garcia (www.ernestogarciadesign.com). “My portfolio spans from contemporary and eclectic to traditional styles.” The Argentina native has made his home in the desert, but says that where he grew up has definitely influenced his style, which he refers to as eclectic. “Argentina is a beautiful country, very European in style and ways of living,” he says. “I hope I bring with me the gentility, glamour and elegance of Buenos Aires, known as The Paris of South America.” What’s one staple in your closet that you can’t imagine your wardrobe without? Actually, you can’t have an eclectic style and have just “one” single staple. I’ll tell you just a few I know I couldn’t live without: Yves Saint Laurent silk/linen jackets, Hugo Boss and John Varvatos pants (I never have to have them altered in any way. I try them; I pay and take them home). Finally, Bruno Magli and Emilio Bianco shoes. What’s your style pet peeve? I honestly don’t have a style pet peeve. We live in a free country and everyone can wear whatever he or she likes. Clothing is a way of expressing ourselves and, as long as we are not offensive to others, we should celebrate that freedom—just think about the millions in this world who cannot do that. Any good advice to share? My mother always says, “First you put on the ‘attitude,’ then comes the dress.” Making a good impression and enjoying yourself socially is a combination of so many things–some are rather imponderable. I believe that having good manners still matters, and that being witty and urbane goes a long way towards people enjoying your company.

hen you encounter Nikki Groff, chief marketing and business development officer for Wallick & Volk, you will likely find her ready and dressed for the next power meeting. While Groff says that doesn’t necessarily mean she is wearing business suits, she will keep it clean, classic and professional when at work. “My style each day has to do with my mood, probably like a lot of women. Some days I will wear a button-up top and slacks, others I will wear a dress and jacket—it just really depends on how I am feeling when I wake up.” With offices located in Scottsdale and Flagstaff, as well as Cheyenne, Wy., Groff has to keep a variety of clothing items ready at all times. However, the one thing she says she will never go without is a great pair of shoes. “I recently just had to re-do my closet just to make room for my shoes. When I married my husband, who is a hunter, I told him that I would never tell him how many guns he was allowed to go out and buy but he was also never allowed to tell me how many shoes I could buy.”

NIKKI GROFF Dresses for success BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

When you aren’t at the office, what do you find yourself doing for fun? Believe it or not, I am an avid hunter and I love the outdoors. We just returned from an archery hunting trip at our ranch in Wyoming. When I’m not in the office, I spend a lot of time at our family cabin in Flagstaff. I love taking my snowmobile from my doorstep with kids in tow and head up to the base of the chairlifts at Snowbowl. And, I always make time for a good glass of Cabernet. You talk about shoes being your go-to accessory. Do you have a favorite pair or brand? Louis Vuittons are my favorite. They are unique and eclectic, and have a way of finishing off any outfit. My husband has Alexandro at Louis Vuitton on speed dial. I’m a lucky girl! If you had to name one staple in your closet, what is the one item you simply couldn’t live without? I have two Cartier love bracelets my husband gave me that I never take off. I’m a big fan of accessories. I love switching out my purses to accompany my outfit for the day. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

KAREEM ROSSER TALKS ABOUT THE SPORT THAT TURNED HIS LIFE AROUND BY SHANA SCHWARZ PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

olo is traditionally thought of as an elite sport—it is known as The Sport of Kings, after all. There are, of course, plenty of players who come from humble beginnings, but few have a backstory as impressive as Kareem Rosser. “I was born and raised in West Philadelphia,” says Rosser. “It was definitely one of the rough neighborhoods in the city. Every day, there were people selling drugs. There was a lot of violence and murders. A lot of poor families and kids just suffering every day. It was always difficult for me as a kid growing up, but having the stable to escape to, I was able to find a place where I was happy and felt safe.” It’s hard to even picture a stable or barn in West Philadelphia, let alone one where a young kid from a tough neighborhood could find refuge. But, through an outreach program in the area, Rosser’s life took shape.

“I started polo when I was about 9,” he says. “I started at a nonprofit organization called Work to Ride. It’s based out of Philadelphia and the program reaches out to inner city youth who are at-risk. The mission of the program is to provide children with the opportunity to use equestrian sports to teach them responsibility. It also helps them with school. It helped me escape the poverty that most of the kids around me grew up in. It’s an amazing program. I was with Work to Ride until I graduated from high school. Even though I was at different schools outside of Philadelphia, when I would come home I would still participate with the program and help with things they were doing for the kids. I was involved with the program for about 11 years. And then I went away to school to do my own thing.” While some kids might have been hesitant to try polo or other sports involving horses, Rosser felt at home immediately. “I was actually very excited because I had two older brothers who had started before me,” he explains. “When they first started, I was a little too young. I eventually joined and I knew the moment I walked into the stable that this was a place that I wanted to be. I’ve always had a passion for animals, even more so horses. Immediately I knew that I never wanted to leave the barn. It was a cool thing knowing that. Even though there was a lot of work to do, being around horses always made me happy. I knew I’d found a place where I felt safe, where I felt like I was able to do things that I couldn’t do at home.” Though the program admittedly changed his life, Rosser is confident he would have succeeded in life regardless. “I think about it all the time… where I’d be if I hadn’t joined the program or what type of person I would be,” he says. “I knew growing up in the environment that I grew up in that I was always different than people around me. I didn’t really want to get into too much trouble or hang out with the wrong crowd. I see my true self if I can look back, and if I had to take a guess at where I’d be without the program, I think I’d probably still be doing something positive with my life. I’m

just not sure what it would be, but knowing myself, I would have found a way to escape the place I grew up. Maybe I’d be playing a different sport.” Rosser is not only succeeding in polo, he’s now known as the greatest African-American polo player of all time. Though he plays for the love of the sport, it certainly doesn’t hurt to be truly great at what he loves. Locals will have a chance to see Rosser play in person at this year’s 5th Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses & Horsepower. This year’s lineup features Polo Azteca vs. Club Polo Cabo, the San Diego Polo Club vs. Arizona’s own Polo Club, and the reigning champions, the Clogau Wales Polo Team vs. Aspen Valley Polo Club. “I was at the Scottsdale Polo Party the first two years playing with Work to Ride,” says Rosser. “We played Harvard one year and UVA the next year. We beat Harvard, but lost to UVA the next year. I’m playing with a local Arizona club team this year. I thought it was a spectacular event that they put on. It’s important to grow the sport of polo, and that’s exactly what the event is doing. They’ve let the people of Arizona know that polo exists, and I feel like a lot of people come from all over for the event. I feel like the people close to the event do a great job putting it on and bringing in a great crowd. Some of the best players in the world come, and it’s a spectacular venue there at WestWorld. I enjoy going every year. I look forward to going this year–and every year that I’m invited.” Currently, 22-year-old Rosser is working towards finishing his degree in economics and business from Colorado State University. He was working on homework a few minutes before we spoke, and sounded thankful for the break—not surprising for a young man balancing school and a demanding athletic schedule. “I play with Colorado State on the Club Team,” he says. “It’s my fourth year on the team. We’re traveling and playing other universities throughout the year. “My favorite memory playing polo is just this past year when we won the National Championship. It’s something I’ll

OCTOBER 2015 |

SS_44_47KareemPolo_Oct15.indd 47

47

never forget. I’ve done it at the high school level, but to be able to do it in college–that was amazing. We have the same returning team, so I think we have another shot at the title. It’ll be cool to bring home one more banner to the school. It had been 16 years since the last time our school won, but we’re hoping to bring it home next year to go back to back. It’ll be great for the program and the school.” As for what he’ll do after school, Rosser is equal parts optimistic and confident. “I’m in the process of now looking for jobs,” he says. “I’m not sure exactly where I’m going to be, but I’m hoping to find a place where I can contribute in some way. I’m hoping to play polo as long as I can, but if I need to step away from it for a while, then that’s something I’ll have to do. I’m not sure where I’ll live, but I’m willing to go wherever my first opportunity takes me. I’d prefer a warm place, but pretty much I’m open to wherever my first opportunity is. Once I get my foot in the door somewhere, I’m hoping to show a company what I can do.” If he’s as dedicated to a job as he’s been to polo, odds are he’ll do just fine. The 5th Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses & Horsepower returns bigger, badder and better than ever on Sat., Oct. 24. The other options include a Winter Citrus Salad, a Caramelized Pineapple Old Fashioned, and a Ruby Red Martini. “Fall brings with it the harvest of succulent citrus fruits, lush dark greens and richer flavors; we’ve really captured the essence of these ingredients with our seasonal recipes and look forward to sharing them with guests,” says Andrew Feldmann, senior vice president of marketing. 480.609.8866 or www.fogodechao. com/scottsdale.

to the event as well as the chance to play a second, private dice game for additional prizes. In addition, the event is aiming to help its guests “chill out,” no matter how warm the temperatures outside may be by transforming the bustling hangar into an icy, white wonderland. But that’s not all. Among the popular restaurants sampling their fall and winter menus during Weekend Jetaway are: Postino WineCafe, Capital Grill North Scottsdale, Proof Canteen at the Four Seasons Scottsdale Resort at Troon North, Talavera at the Four Seasons Scottsdale Resort at Troon North, Rhythm & Wine, Jalapeño Inferno, SOL Cocina, The DoubleTree Resort Paradise Valley, Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market, Sprinkles, Cookies From Home, and The Melting Pot. “We’ve also partnered with Alliance Beverage, who will be debuting several of their seasonal, limited edition spirits and specialty cocktails all night long,” says PGA star and Weekend Jetaway host Tom Lehman. Back by popular demand will be DJ Solomon, spinning music all night from an elevated platform above the event. Both a live and silent auction featuring resort, jewelry, spa, golf, dining and vacation packages will also take place, with proceeds from the entire evening benefiting Elevate Phoenix. “Elevate Phoenix is a unique and often life-changing program for Arizona youth that provides in-school teaching; afterschool mentoring; career instruction; postsecondary preparation; character, life skills and peer leadership development; community service; adventure activities; and literacy improvement within our local public schools,” says Lehman, who also serves on the Elevate Phoenix board of directors.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy in Hair Restoration— PRP Therapy Dr Rochlin is now performing PRP therapy as a proactive therapeutic option for male and female patients experiencing hair loss. PRP is an exciting non-surgical therapeutic option for patients who require stimulation of hair growth for hair loss conditions. Recent scientific research and technology provides the medical community with new understandings of wound and tissue healing. As a result of these scientific studies, we recognize PRP is an all-natural medical procedure performed in physicians offices for scalp, skin, and hair stimulation.

Unlike a lot of other procedures, CoolSculpting® takes very little time and is pretty simple to fit into your daily life. here are some resorts that truly try to think of everything—which is a good thing, because when I packed to head to the Amara Resort and Spa in Sedona for the weekend, I forgot half of what I needed (yes, including my toothbrush—oops!). No problem. In fact, nothing was a problem. The theme of the entire stay at this cozy and welcoming property is that they anticipated everything that would make your stay amazing. Set amongst the stunning red rocks of Sedona and nestled against the banks of Oak Creek, just below the main uptown shopping area, this 100-room boutique property offers a laid-back and serene, yet fun, experience. The room décor is “modern native,” and there are a mix of guest rooms and suites. The property itself features a negative edge pool and hot tub that’s framed with stunning views of Sedona’s mountains, as well as lush green foliage. A nearby lawn area is complete with lawn games—a giant Connect Four, cornhole, a giant Jenga, and more. And just steps away a path leads to the creek. When you’re ready to dine, make it a point to eat at SaltRock, the resort’s on-property restaurant. Led by Executive Chef Massimo De Francesca, the restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with menu items ranging from a Quinoa salad or Burger (lunch) to Duck Confit

Tacos or Citrus Swordfish (dinner). SaltRock is also known for its agavefocused cocktail menu. Speaking of drinks, another nice touch at Amara is the daily hosted wine hour, and the complimentary coffee and tea that is available in the lobby. Grab a drink, settle into a sofa, and relax while taking in the views from the lobby. The property also boasts the Amara Spa, which offers a variety of body treatments and facials, as well as makeup consultations. Many of the treatments incorporate native ingredients and promote a natural healing with elements such as Native rattles, crystals or stones, and more. If you want to feel serene past your spa appointment, take advantage of the daily free yoga—and don’t worry about bringing your own mat, because there’s one provided for use in every guest room. If you venture off property, you are just a brief walk up a short hill to the town, where you can wander amongst the shops and restaurants while taking in the mountain views. While the property is perfect for a romantic getaway or a girls’ trip, it’s also a great place for families. The accommodating and friendly staff makes kids feel like superstars—which helps makes it a perfect vacation for you, too. magine, if you will, summer heat finally giving way to delicious fall temperatures. There’s a gorgeous new sparkling silver metallic sporty German convertible sitting in the driveway, just waiting for you. Elbow-high, top down, exposing the coral red Dakota sport seats. Just look at those bratty 18-inch forged wheels. For a few minutes, I’m a young fool in love. Anyone looking for a party? Step up to BMW’s new 228i convertible, the drop-top variant of the 2 Series coupe introduced last year to replace the 1-Series. Slip behind the wheel and fire up the 240-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-four, shift the 8-speed automatic transmission,

and in just over five seconds you’re at 60 mph, getting after a mountain road with the car fearlessly carving the twisty turns. Pure mechanical joy. It would shed blood to please. Those who seek additional power can step up to the M235i convertible and enjoy 320 horsepower from the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, where getting from zero to 60 takes just 4.8 seconds—and it’s available with a manual transmission. It’s easy and fun with perfect steering and the chassis feel of a high-priced go-kart. Darty, tempestuous, the new 228i embraces power-to-weight minimalism and heel-and-toe driving in a way we’ve not experienced since the Z4. Let’s talk about aesthetics: Whether you’re pushing it through the corners or just cruising on a warm fall evening, the 228i is a great place to be. The seats are supportive and comfortable with excellent driving position and ample legroom, even for those of us over 6 feet tall. BMW says it’s a four-seater, but rear-seat knee room, upright backrests and bulky side panels make it uncomfortable for all but those of diminutive size. Cargo space is decent even with the top down, thanks to a fabric roof rather than a retractable hardtop, and rear seatbacks that fold down, affording a standard pass-through. The top powers up or down in just 20 seconds, at vehicle speeds of up to 30 mph. The cabin is remarkably placid when the roof is raised. As we ease into winter, driving open-roofed, the driver can choose the optimal temperature mitigation with the heater, heated seats and rear-seat wind deflector for ultimate wind management. Overall, the BMW 2 Series convertible is neither the roomiest nor the fastest BMW, but it is fun to drive. The ability to drop the top on a whim makes it all worthwhile. It isn’t inexpensive, but owning one is a decision you won’t regret. Chef Gio Osso at Virtù Honest Craft has made this dish, the Grilled Charred Octopus, an iconic menu staple. He uses a family secret cooking method to tenderize the octopus (sorry, we can’t share!), and then takes it to the grill for charring. Other ingredients include ceci, calabrese chile butter, rucola and fennel. The $16 dish is a great shareable pick for two, and is just one of the many standouts at Virtù, which offers a selection of the season’s best seafood, prime meats, fresh pastas and regional produce. 3701 N. ou walk into a restaurant and hear the loud, steady hum of the diners and an occasional ting of flatware dropping and the kitchen staff calling out orders. There is a ballet of sorts with the servers; putting orders in, dropping by the bar for drink orders, checking in and delivering dishes. But what happens when you want a more intimate experience? It has been said that great things come in small packages, and these Scottsdale locations are proof positive. The petite spots, with no more than 50 or so tables, cater to a cozier and intimate dining experience.

food files Atlas Bistro BYOB 2515 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.990.2433 www.atlasbistrobyob.com Atlas Bistro is located in a strip mall, and is one of those places that if you didn’t know it was there you might not notice it. Simply passing by on the road or even walking by you probably wouldn’t imagine the treasure that is this little spot. The dining room is tiny, which makes for an incredibly intimate dining experience, and even though you will be in close proximity to the table next to you, you won’t feel as though you are a part of their conversation (or vice versa!). The joyful jazz music lilts through the air and despite the size, you will feel as though you are the only ones in the room. The service is impeccable, and the food is presented as works of art. The specialty wine store next door is the perfect partner for this BYOB restaurant. The menu here changes frequently based on the best ingredients available and the exquisite talent of the chef.

Basil & Garlic Bistro

SOME RESTAURANTS SEEM TO HAVE THE ABILITY TO WRAP YOU UP IN THEIR AMBIANCE, SERVICE AND FRESH, CLEAN FLAVORS LIKE A WARM COMFORTING HUG—TESORO IS ONE OF THOSE PLACES.

9330 E. Poinsettia Drive, Scottsdale 480.661.3912 www.basilandgarlicbistro.com If you are looking for a low-key, authentic Italian dining experience, Basil & Garlic will make you feel like you are in your Nona’s dining room. You’re greeted with the intoxicating and lingering smells of garlic and roasted tomatoes, which will have you immediately salivating in anticipation of the feast to come. The menu features Southern Italian specialties like sub sandwiches, a variety of pasta dishes, pizzas, calzones and Stromboli. The décor and dishes are completely lacking in pretension, and this all lends to the authenticity of the restaurant. The Calamari is a standout, made with a light batter and great flavor. One of the most popular dishes, the Quattro Formaggi, is a delicate combination of gorgonzola, mozzarella, provolone and parmesan cheeses, and is available as a pizza or pasta selection.

9393 N. 90th St., Scottsdale 480.314.4215 www.hirosushiaz.com At a typical sushi joint you’ll find a long sushi counter, upbeat music, bright colors, and creative sushi roll creations. Hiro Sushi is anything but typical. You’ll find a small space with very little flash, but what they lack in space and flash they make up for (abundantly) with the pinnacle of fresh fish selections and authentic Japanese dishes. Their menu boasts all of the usual nigiri, sashimi and sushi options, but if you are looking to be adventurous you will want to focus your attention on their handwritten menu board. The options here will feature off-menu specials, created specifically based on seasonal ingredients. The skills of the sushi chefs are presented in each carefully crafted special, paying great care and respect to the ingredients and flavor profiles—a true and rare treat presented in an unassuming package.

11219 E. Via Linda, Scottsdale 480.767.1990 www.tesoroscottsdale.com Some restaurants seem to have the ability to wrap you up in their ambiance, service and fresh, clean flavors like a warm comforting hug—Tesoro is one of those places. Tucked away, almost out of sight, Tesoro is as authentic as it gets. All of the pastas are made in-house daily—and with a ton of love. The sauces are labored over and intensely flavorful, the pastas are perfectly prepared with just the right amount of bite, and all of the seasonings are present as a supporting player, never overpowering the stars of the dish. The Gnocchi is a shining star on the menu, dressed in a tomato-cream sauce that presents as both light and rich at the same time. The light and almost delicate gnocchi is the perfect partner for this sauce, which relays a hint of sage, resulting in the perfect comfort meal, served in their warm and inviting dining room.

6934 E. 1st Ave., Scottsdale 480.970.7682 www.cafemonarch.com If you are looking for a swoon-worthy spot, a place to really impress your love or potential love, Café Monarch oozes romance. The patio OCTOBER 2015 |

is breathtaking with its vine-covered walls, hanging candleholders, and beautiful water feature, and it’s hard to not fall in love, whether it is with your date or your dinner. A candlelit dinner on the patio, being doted on by the wait staff, and the opportunity to indulge in some of the best contemporary American cuisine in the Valley is a special occasion all on its own, and can only serve to elevate whatever you might be celebrating. Café Monarch offers a four-course, prix fixe menu that changes every week, so there is also an element of surprise to this charming restaurant.

Those familiar with the brand have most likely sampled Baileys’ wildly popular Salted Carmel and Cinnamon Vanilla variations, or perhaps their earlier lines of custom flavors ranging from Mint Chocolate to Hazelnut. Most recently, Baileys Chocolate Cherry, just introduced last year and praised for its ability to bottle the popular flavor combination without making it taste like a mash-up of chocolate syrup with cough medicine, has been making waves. But, chances are, you haven’t tried their newest innovation—yet. Eager to bring a new flavor to the consumer in 2015, Baileys introduced its first-ever Espresso Crème in recent weeks. Available at most grocery and fine liquor stores Valleywide, including Fry’s, AJs, Total Wine & More and Bevmo, as well as at major events including Weekend Jetaway and Live & Local—both in Scottsdale— Baileys’ Espresso Crème combines the intense flavor and aroma of premium-roasted Colombian coffee beans with subtle notes of vanilla, culminating with a velvety smooth (and slightly chocolatey) finish. A creamy, dreamy flavor on even the most discerning coffee lovers’ palate, the Espresso Crème is a perfect liqueur to drink on its own, combine with other seasonal ingredients for the perfect fall cocktail, or—of course—pour into one’s coffee.

n 1974, Gilbeys of Ireland introduced Baileys Irish Cream, the first Irish Cream-infused spirit in the world, quickly making its mark in the beverage industry. Known for its distinctive taste, thanks to a top-secret cocoa extract recipe that gives Baileys its chocolate character and essence, the brand is currently available in 180 countries worldwide and is among the top 10 most popular spirits in the world. Funny enough, it is also among the most purchased duty-free items in airports worldwide! It is safe to assume that Baileys is one of the most beloved exports from the proud island of Ireland not named Liam Neeson or Colin Farrell. “Today, Baileys accounts for more than 50% of all spirits exported from Ireland,” says Sarah Shneider of Alliance Beverage. “Over 2,300 glasses are consumed every minute of every day.” And though steeped in tradition— roughly 75% of its raw ingredients and packaging still come straight out of Ireland, including the whiskey, sugar and fresh cream from nearly 40,000 Irish dairy cows—the brand has been clever to evolve with the times. Among its shrewdest moves in recent years has been adding new and innovative flavor profiles to inspire a new generation of mixologists, bartenders and home entertainers.

AZ/88 AZ/88 has long been known as a place to see and be seen, and it’s a great option if you want to grab a bite before visiting either of the neighboring museums. The food is consistently excellent, and they have some of the best burgers in the area. here are a lot of wine bar concepts in the Valley—but how many offer 50-plus whiskey options, live music five days a week from local artists, and an ooey, gooey grilled cheese menu? Enter The Toasted Cork, a two-story modern American wine bar in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale’s Entertainment District. It offers a large, dog-friendly patio, an impressive listing of 150-plus wines by the bottle as well as 30 craft beers, and regionally inspired cocktails (with humorous names!). Among the current menu highlights is the Typical Ginger, a combination of St. George Green Chili Vodka, Giffard Ginger of the Indies, lime juice and pineapple. The subtle lighting, rotating art installments, and sparkling chandeliers are purposely designed in homage to classic New York wine bars. And, given that owner Michael Stein hails from the Big Apple, it’s no wonder. “While I technically grew up in Las Vegas, getting my start in nightlife, I really grew up when I moved to New York City in 2007, where I had the chance to work with some of the true icons of the nightlife industry,” says Stein, who now lives just blocks from The Toasted Cork’s front door. At just 29-years-old, the enterprising Stein has the experience of someone twice his age. Perhaps that is why The Toasted Cork is appealing to young

professionals, Baby Boomers, and everyone in between. “If I have learned anything, it is to give all people what they want–quality, variety and approachability,” says Stein, whose unpretentious outlook on the bar business has led The Toasted Cork to become not only a go-to date destination for couples of all ages, but the perfect “girls’ night out” and company teambuilding locale. In addition to the 150-bottle selection, which rotates on a monthly basis and is proud to go beyond simply offering California coastal varietals, The Toasted Cork also offers wildly popular tasting flights, which can be customized, starting at $15. For those new to wine, Toasted Cork also features a regular “Vino 101” class the second Saturday of each month for $35 per person. “The classes change monthly, and are all based on our guests. If we have newbies to wine, we focus on the basics. If we have more experienced wine drinkers, we try to give them something a little more sophisticated, but still easy and fun,” says Stein, noting that each class features signature food pairings and that advance reservations are required. And then there is the grilled cheese. “When I was in New York, my team and I got the wild idea one night to dream up a grilled cheese menu,” says Stein. “To say it was successful was an understatement. I couldn’t wait to bring the concept to Scottsdale.” Served with house-seasoned kettle chips or creamy tomato basil soup, highlights from Stein’s grilled cheese menu include: • The Bacon Guac: Pepperjack, aged cheddar, Hass avocado, and Applewood smoked bacon. • The Glazed & Confused: Sharp cheddar, honey glazed ham, grilled pineapple, and sweet teriyaki sauce. • The Millionaire: Gruyère, fontina, organic Portobello mushrooms, spinach, and truffle glaze.

No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
