AIN. THERE’S HELP—AND HOPE—FOR HAIR LOSS How Carly Klein and National Hair Loss are achieving unprecedented results. Hair is something we tend to take for granted – until it’s gone. Whether our strands are getting sparse due to genetics or hormones, medical conditions such as alopecia, or the effects of medication or chemotherapy, the end result is the same: self-esteem suffers profoundly, and quality of life is compromised. It was Carly Klein’s compassion for people in this situation that led her to establish National Hair Loss in 2010. As the vice president of a prestigious dermatology office, she realized the need for more specialized care – and more emotional support – for hair loss sufferers. There were so many misconceptions and misinformation about hair loss and treatments that people seemed to lose hope. And there was another problem: “I noticed that hair loss facilities were predominantly geared toward men,” says Carly. “I wanted to start a program to help women and cancer patients, too.” In the six years since, National Hair Loss has grown exponentially via word of mouth alone, even garnering a roster of celebrity clientele – strong testimonies to its life-changing care. Through careful diagnoses and effective treatments, a multitude of satisfied patients have regained the confidence they thought they’d lost. From the moment someone walks through the door for a complementary, no-obligation evaluation, it’s clear just how focused National Hair Loss actually is; not a one-size-fits-all place where patients are handed a bottle of Rogaine and told “good luck.” Instead, National Hair Loss features a wide range of cutting-edge therapies to address all types of hair loss. One of the most recent is platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a non-surgical, therapeutic treatment that uses the patient’s own blood plasma to stimulate cellular growth. With a topof-the-line PRP machine and the most extensive specialized training in the area, National Hair Loss is proud to offer PRP as

NATIONAL HAIR LOSS FEATURES A WIDE RANGE OF CUTTING-EDGE THERAPIES TO ADDRESS ALL TYPES OF HAIR LOSS. ONE OF THE MOST RECENT IS PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP), A NONSURGICAL, THERAPEUTIC TREATMENT THAT USES THE PATIENT’S OWN BLOOD PLASMA TO STIMULATE CELLULAR GROWTH one of its many available solutions. Though training and technology is critical, it can’t replace the human element, which Carly says makes the biggest difference of all. Each carefullyselected member of the National Hair Loss team has personal experience with the issues that their clients face, so they’re able to truly understand every aspect. “My team is made up of the most caring group of people I have met,” she says. “Three of my team members have dealt with Alopecia Areata. They changed careers due to being affected by this and wanted to help others.” Those facing cancer have valuable allies in the National Hair Loss team members, too: “We are the first in the country to have a specific cancer division, devoted to helping patients with their hair loss,” says Carly. “Our own

families have dealt with cancer. We relate to our patients on a deeper level.” Many exciting developments are happening within the company, including an international expansion (we’ll hear more in an upcoming issue). But one thing never changes: an unwavering commitment to providing successful, innovative care in a supportive environment. “Every day, we get to help patients take control over something they once felt hopeless about,” enthuses Carly. “This is one of the most emotional things someone could go through. I feel privileged that so many have chosen us to be a part of their journey in getting their hair back.” To schedule a no-cost consultation, visit www.nationalhairlossassoc.com or call 602-283-2355 or 877-551-5350 (toll free).

ed note

I

t seems poignantly appropriate that, during the month of giving thanks and the season of generosity, the person on our cover (page 54) has made it an integral part of her life to give back. As the wife of Eddie Johnson, a former NBA player (including the Phoenix Suns), Joy Johnson has made it her mission to make an impact, especially when it comes to empowering women. This has since carried into her continued community involvement and creating her own business. In September, I had the privilege of meeting her at the My Mom, My Hero event hosted by her and her husband’s philanthropy, Eddie Johnson & Friends, and she definitely brings a sense of joy wherever she goes, including this issue! In the spirit of Thanksgiving, there’s no shortage of foodie fun and ways to have celebratory toasts in the pages that follow. After all, it seems as though the ritual of gathering around a table with loved ones is at the root of our holiday traditions. On that note, we’ve rounded up six places that have sharable, family-style eats on page 132 as well new restaurants sure to wow your guests (pages 62 and 138). But if you’re serving at home, make sure you serve in style with our fabulous finds on page 100. Of course, it wouldn’t be November in Scottsdale without events of all kinds, from grand openings to The Polo Party to charity galas. We’ve highlighted many of them throughout this issue, and we’re doing you one better – check out page 110 for an array of gala-ready ensembles that will give you instant glitz. As far as events go, I’ve been making my way to a lot of them recently. In fact, it feels like it’s been a whirlwind! But despite the hustle and bustle and beyond all of the glamorous occasions, it’s important to remember what this season (and many of these events) are really all about – gratitude, grace and a spirit of generosity. I think these three qualities are evident in so many Scottsdale folks – including you, dear readers! – as well as the stories of those within these pages. Perhaps I will meet you at one of these events in person, but until then, I’ll say this here: Thank you for who you are, and thank you for taking the time to read So Scottsdale!, something that I feel is a way for me to give back to you.

trength comes in surprising ways and unexpected times in life. For Sharon Bondurant, her strength has always been her recruiting business and passion for connecting people. But it was her search for physical strength that changed her personal and professional life in ways she never imagined.

10/21/16 9:54 AM

up close A near-native to Scottsdale, Bondurant attended Chaparral High School before earning her degree at Arizona State University. Like many, she wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted to do after graduating and worked a variety of jobs while finding her own path in life. “I had no idea what I wanted to ‘be’ when I grew up,” Bondurant recalls. “I was soul searching and only knew some core things that were important to me. I wanted to help people, eventually have my own company, and make a decent living.” She “fell in love” with recruiting after a suggestion from a friend, saying a lightbulb went off when she realized she could work with so many people to improve their lives – and turn it into a career. “The job that you go to every day is such a defining element of your life,” says Bondurant, adding that it’s not only income that influences quality of life, but that a job determines everything from the time you wake up to who you interact with on a daily basis. “So to be a change agent in that huge part of someone’s life is rewarding. There is nothing better than telling someone, ‘You got the job!’” Bondurant says she didn’t care about starting at minimum wage at her first recruiting job, which, at the time, was only $4.25 an hour. “My heart told me that I could do that job and do it well. So I jumped in and the rest is history!” While she had always dreamed of one day owning her own business, Bondurant founded Tech Finders, which helps match exceptional tech talent with the right company, more out of necessity than preparation, at least in the beginning. In 1998, shortly after giving birth to her first son, she realized she couldn’t return to an office on someone else’s schedule. “My main motivation was to be able to be home with my son and make enough money to keep a roof over his head.” In a spare bedroom converted into an office and armed with only a phone, fax machine and the Yellow Pages, Tech Finders took off. Today, her business is one of Arizona’s top recruiting firms, accumulating awards including the Phoenix Business Journal’s Top Woman-Owned Businesses

in 2016, Top Tech Recruiting Company 2014 by Ranking Arizona and Inc. 5000 for two years running. Bondurant herself was also named in Who’s Who in Business as one of the Most Influential Women in Business 2016. Her company has now expanded its tech wings to include HR Finders and Finance Finders, which recruit human resource and finance talent (among others), respectively.

A New Level of Growth After more than a decade of successfully running her company and improving the lives of so many, Bondurant decided to make a change in her own life. “All was good, but I was a little bored,” Bondurant says. “I felt that there was a little spark that was missing. “I thought to myself, ‘What could I say yes to that I normally say no to doing? And what would make me really uncomfortable and be a huge challenge?’” That was in 2011, when, at 41 years young, the mother of two decided to try something new: fitness competitions. “Fitness competing hit all the areas of being uncomfortable: committing to a huge scary goal, having to get in the best shape of my life, being onstage,” Bondurant says. “Never in a million years would I have ever thought I would be in a teeny weeny bikini in front of hundreds of people, let alone doing it at 41! All of it

scared me to death. So I said YES!” Within her first year, she earned top place wins in open, with masters and national competitions soon to follow. She ultimately earned her IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness) Pro Card during a time that fitness became especially important in her life. Faced with a divorce in 2015, Bondurant credits training as motivation to move forward. “It kept me on track during a really painful time,” Bondurant says. “I ended up getting that Pro Card last July at age 45, and it was one of the best moments of my life during a really bleak time.” Bondurant’s newfound openness to different experiences also enhanced her approach to business and renewed her energy to accomplish more. “When I said yes to getting into the best shape of my life, it changed my mindset, which then changed my business and my personal life. My new outlook was, ‘What else can I do that scares me?’” Her busy training schedule taught her how to delegate more at work, as well as try new things to grow her business. “It gave me confidence that I could do anything that I set my mind to doing!” And it worked. In just those five years since she began training, Bondurant says Tech Finders has grown more than 500 percent. With renewed physical and mental strength, Bondurant intends to double the success in her business over the next three years, all while competing at the IFBB Pro level. She also hopes to travel more and continue to set an example to those she influences the most: her children. And soon, Bondurant will be launching a new endeavor: The Fit Professional (www.the-fit-professional.com), a platform that will promote health and wellness for busy professionals to help them achieve a fit mind, body and business. “If you feel good and are healthy, then you will be able to be there for the ones you love,” Bondurant says. “I encourage other women that it is okay to be the best you; it will help more people than you even realize. You are stronger and capable of much more than you know!”

How to handle fine hair -Ask the expert! Rodney Gentry, Full-service Designer and Hair Color Specialist, Sachi Studios

Q: We’ve focused on the problems and solutions of fine hair here, but are there also advantages to it? RG: Of course! Fine hair can look stunning, just like all other types of hair. Fine hair tends to be soft and silky. This makes it harder to style, but the flip side is that it can almost glow with a wonderful, natural shine. Those with curly fine hair will also find they spend much less time straightening it than their thicker-haired friends. Fine hair is also brilliant for the summer months, when it helps to keep the head cooler. Just like all other hair types, fine hair comes with plentiful advantages, as well as its own particular issues!

From static issues to limp, dull styles, fine hair can sometimes feel impossible to get right. Thankfully, expert color specialist Rodney Gentry, based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, is here to help! Q: First, why is it that some of us have finer hair than others? Rodney Gentry: Fine hair results when each individual strand of hair has a small circumference, so that individual strands are not as large as those belonging to other people whose hair has a wider circumference. Q: Do people with fine hair have particular problems as a result of the hair’s fineness? RG: Clients with fine hair tend to come to me with a similar range of complaints. While fine hair can look sleek and beautiful, it can be difficult to style. Many clients also wish for more volume to their hair. Q: How do you help them to overcome these issues? RG: There are plenty of options for those with fine hair. Highlights are one way to add volume and texture, and lowlights can work really well, too. It is really incredible what you can do with color. Clients always get a boost when they see how different their fine hair looks after it has undergone a color treatment. There are also some great products on the market to help with fine hair. I’m loving the René Furterer Volumea range right now. The four products—shampoo, conditioner, conditioning spray and a volumizing foam—harness the power of natural ingredients like carob in order to create long-lasting volume that leaves the hair bouncy and lightweight. Products like these work wonders, and it is great to be able to introduce clients to them and know how much they will enjoy the effect that they have. Simple things like drying technique can also make a big difference. People with fine hair should lift the hair outward and upward as they dry if they want maximum volume. They should also avoid brushing it when wet, as fine hair can break very easily.

Q: What other problems do people with fine hair face? RG: Fine hair can be more prone to damage than thick hair, so those with fine hair need to be careful about over-styling and the use of chemical treatments. Here at Rodney Gentry, we specialize in using products that are kind to the hair, and that nurture it at the same time as coloring it. I don’t believe that there is any place for harsh chemical treatments in a modern salon—they just aren’t necessary anymore. Enzyme-based products can color hair beautifully, and are so much kinder to it than the old peroxide-based treatments. Q: Can you recommend any quick fixes for those with fine hair? RG: Well, a quick trip to Sachi Studios, for one! For those after a quick fix at home, I would recommend always having a deep conditioning masque on hand, ready to be used as a weekly treatment or whenever particularly luscious locks are required. On a daily basis, it really doesn’t get much better than the René Furterer Volumea line for those looking for added body.

Rodney Gentry can be contacted on 480.639.2000, via rodneygentry@rodneygentry.com, or at www.rodneygentry.com. Visit him at Sachi Studios, 10201 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste. 28, Scottsdale, AZ 85258.

TABLE TALK Gordie Bufton helps transform families BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

“W

hether I’m speaking to an audience of thousands, coaching entire families, or speaking to a child one-on-one, my goal is to always increase understanding.” Soft-spoken and kind on the eyes, Gordie Bufton is a transformational coach and speaker who urges individuals to turn their lives around for the better. In his personal memoir, Eluding Reality, and in the speeches he has delivered at a myriad of Valley schools, Bufton publicly shares his personal trials and tribulations that eventually led to his mental and spiritual renewal. “I felt compelled to share my story so others don’t have to experience the same pain I put myself and my family through and can choose a different path for themselves,” Bufton says. Bufton saw an overwhelming need for an effective prevention program that provides real empowerment to families. In 2015, Bufton and his friend-turned-business partner, Bradley Callow, established a real solution in the form of a lecture series called Both Sides of the Kitchen Table (www.bothsidesofthekitchentable.com). The mission is to help highperforming families empower themselves and their children to be more self-reliant. Workshops facilitated by Bufton and Callow ensure that both perspectives – the child and the parents’ – are heard and acknowledged. In this way, communication around the kitchen table is richer in substance, respect and love.

Etc.

What piece of advice you would give to high-performing parents to help them foster a stronger bond with their children? Seek first to understand and then to be understood. What do you love most about what you do? Being able to connect with others and allow them to feel understood and heard. What are some of your other hobbies? I recently completed an Ironman, so anything fitness-related. I also love personal development, reading and meditation.

A SOOTHING SOLUTION

January O’Connor’s tasty remedy for aiding sore throats BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

I

t may be the time of year where the common cold is on the rise, but thanks to one inventive mother and wife, the triedand-true sore throat remedy, gargling with warm salt water, is a whole lot tastier. Trained as a registered nurse, January O’Connor invented GoGargle! in 2013 after her husband consulted her medical expertise for his sore throat. “I told my husband to gargle with warm salt water, but he was reluctant to do so because the taste is extremely unpleasant,” O’Connor says. “He didn’t know how much salt to add to the water and did not like the grainy texture.” Suddenly, a light bulb went off in O’Connor’s mind: Take the old remedy and make it better. After researching her nursing journals and experimenting with ingredients, GoGargle! – an effervescent tablet with healing properties – was born. After a six-month period adjusting for taste and effectiveness, O’Connor perfected her medical concoction, and it’s now available in a variety of drugstores. GoGargle! contains therapeutic agents such as aloe, chamomile, honey and zinc along with saline and vitamins that offer quick, convenient, flavorful and gluten-free sore throat relief. “Both my husband’s mother and mine had always told us as kids to ‘go gargle’ with salt water for a sore throat. Now, we are telling the world to GoGargle!”

Etc.

What did you enjoy most about being an RN? I love the knowledge that I’ve gained through my studies and experience. Knowledge cannot be taken from you, and education is a solid foundation to grow and develop greater things. Do you have other remedies in the works or new GoGargle! flavors? We do! It is a closely held secret right now, but GoGargle! will be expanding the line with exciting additions and partnerships soon. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? My husband and I love entertaining, cooking and hosting poolside parties. I enjoy decorating our new home in Scottsdale and overall enjoying Arizona living. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

ON-TREND TAILOR Peter Zistas’ playful, purposeful and professional style

P

eter Zistas knows custom design and knows it exceptionally well. As the son of a master tailor, timeless fashion was inherent in his upbringing. Having learned a lot from his father, Zistas is now educating Valley men how to dress to impress. Zistas shares his style expertise at Brothers Tailors, a fine clothing and tailoring store that’s been owned by his family for more than 20 years. “As a Master Clothier, I facilitate the process of building a wardrobe that tailors to a gentleman’s occupation and lifestyle,” Zistas says. “Helping gentlemen reach their ultimate confidence level professionally or personally is something I’m very proud to be a part of.” His style is both energetic and eclectic. Inspired by Tom Ford and young designers like Aleks Musika, Zistas’ wardrobe exudes professionalism and whimsy. His playfulness is revealed in his bold colors, textures and patterns. “I’m in love with plaid and print right now,” Zistas says. “Plaid really showcases the quality of the tailoring, and when the lines match perfectly, your garment transforms into artwork.” As the owner of 15 suits, six jackets and more than 100 shirts, Zistas’ custommade suit collection continues to grow with every new idea he has. “My creativity is always thinking about what I’m going to make next!”

FASHION REMASTERED DJ Jen Jones’ spin on style BY EMILY GLYNN PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

usic will always come first for Australian DJ Jen Jones, who is a resident DJ at Maya Day + Nightclub and Talking Stick Resort, but fashion takes a close second. Before she rose to international fame, landing gigs like the 2013 Super Bowl and the legendary Copa America soccer tournament, Jones worked as a junior buyer for the Australian clothing brand Cotton On. The job ultimately inspired her move to the U.S., where her star, and the spotlight, have been shining bright. “People are watching,” Jones says. “I am my own walking business card, so I feel a sense of urgency to look my best at all times.” Although her unique style – a blend of edgy-glam streetwear with high-fashion undertones – changes with the trends, one thing remains the same. Whether she’s donning a curve-hugging bodysuit or a simple LBD, Jones’ on-the-job ensembles are undeniably fierce. When she’s laying low, Jones opts for chic athletic brands like Bombshell Sportswear and Ivy Park. Occasionally, she’ll throw on a jersey and pair of Air Max sneakers, which can sometimes be seen peeking out from beneath the turntables. “Going casual can be just as fashionable as a Gucci dress,” she asserts. “It just depends on how you rock it!” As for accessories? No matter where in the world she is, Jones is never without her signature pink headphones. “I see them as a sense of strength in a such male-dominant industry,” she says. “I do it for the ladies!” When did you feel like you finally made it as a DJ? When people I didn’t even know started referring to me as Jen Jones. What was your most memorable moment from playing the Copa America this past summer? DJ’ing in front of 70,000 people and asking them to scream and make some noise. The rush you get when they respond is indescribable! Five things you can’t live without? Family, music, P90X, shoes and ChapStick!

INJEXTS: Take a dip in the Fountain of Youth Looking and feeling your best is something that most people strive for on a daily basis. Between going to the gym and watching what you eat, it seems the list of what to do to achieve this goal is endless. One thing that can be made easy, however, is aging gracefully. Injexts, Scottsdale’s only injectable bar, was developed and founded by Dr. Ashleigh Ortega to help restore a youthful look in minutes. Injexts is a on demand injectable aesthetic practice that makes it convenient and easy for patients to book an appointment, receive treatment and have a refreshed look within minutes, without the hassle of traveling to a med spa or physician’s office. “I love helping people age at a rate they’re comfortable with, help them look and feel their best and doing the injectables safely,” she says. And what’s not to love about the simple, expedient approach to antiaging that Injexts provides: it’s the fountain of youth on demand. Dr. Ortega began her career in the medical field in 1999, as a registered nurse at Yale. From there, she relocated to Scottsdale, where she earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Arizona State University, one of the foremost DNP programs in the country. “One of the many perks of coming to Injexts is you are getting the treatment of a doctor of nursing practice, but the personalization and heart of your favorite nurse,” says Dr. Ortega. “Having that personalized care is critical to making everyone feel comfortable and relaxed while reversing the appearance of time.” Injexts offers Botox, Kybella and fillers to minimize lines and wrinkles, and vitamin B12, which can improve energy, metabolism and sleep. Each client is given an individualized consultation beforehand in order to determine their specific needs, and a post-treatment assessment to ensure that the desired results have been achieved. Injexts also offers exceptional antiaging skincare from SkinMedica, a product

line that Dr. Ortega hand-picked based on the company’s extensive research. “I want everyone to come in and feel comfortable, and help them pick a product that fits best with their life,” says Dr. Ortega. “At our initial consultation I make sure that each product is picked for the right reasons, and will be the best fit for you. We will take all the time we need to make sure that each decision that is made is the right one and make sure the patient is comfortable.” All aesthetic practitioners at Injexts are nurse practitioners and/or registered nurses and have received their certificate in advanced injectable training to ensure that each customer’s aesthetic injectable experience is at their demand by world class healthcare providers.

From NBA wife and model to philanthropist and entrepreneur, Joy Johnson shares her passion for helping others and empowering women

Joy Johnson has lived a full life. As a basketball wife and former model, she carved her own identity in philanthropic events, eventually leading to her own successful event planning company. Today, she encourages other sports wives to use their positions to better the world through her and her husband’s own charitable efforts and annual fundraising gala, all while empowering other women along the way.

Joy Johnson and her husband, retired NBA star and current Phoenix Suns color commentator Eddie Johnson, have been together for more than 30 years. Originally from Chicago, Johnson attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. During her college years she started dating then up-and-coming basketball star Eddie and was quickly immersed in the role of NBA wife. For 17 seasons, the Johnsons traveled to where the league needed the small forward, from Seattle to Charlotte and Indiana to Houston, even spending some time in Greece as part of the European league. Eddie spent three seasons on the Phoenix Suns’ roster, starting in 1987. It was with the Suns in 1989 that he received the coveted 6th Man of the Year award, cementing his place as a Phoenix favorite. With her husband often traveling, Johnson found ways to stay busy by modeling. While living in Phoenix in the late ’80s, she was signed by the Robert Black Agency and modeled on the runway and for major department stores. “When we first arrived in Phoenix in 1987, we were young and didn’t have any children so I wanted to stay busy and generate my own income,” Johnson says. While she enjoyed her career as a model, Johnson longed for ways to connect with fellow basketball wives and the various communities she often found herself in as a newcomer. “We moved many times, and one of the ways that I got acclimated to a new city and team was to get involved in that team’s charitable alliances,” Johnson says. Johnson became passionate about women and family-focused causes, and she worked tirelessly to involve herself with the charities of every team Eddie joined, including two years as president of the Pacers Connection. “It didn’t take long for me to assist in the planning of their selected events and in a couple of cities, I found myself as the president of the wives group and therefore leading the charge in their latest event planning endeavors.” Perhaps her most notable contribution was in 1993 when she was a founding

“HAVING MY OWN BUSINESS HAS BEEN IMPORTANT FOR ME BECAUSE IT HAS GIVEN ME AN IDENTITY OUTSIDE OF BEING ‘EDDIE JOHNSON’S WIFE.’ ONCE I TURNED MY GIFT OF PLANNING INTO MY OCCUPATION, MY SELFESTEEM GREW LEAPS AND BOUNDS.”

member of Behind the Bench (BTB), the National Basketball Wives Association. She chaired the organization’s very first All-Star Touching a Life Gala, an event that Behind the Bench still hosts every NBA All-Star Weekend. She was elected president of the organization in 1999 and served in this capacity for four years, until 2003. That same year, she received the Spirit Family Award for her leadership efforts on behalf of the organization. “Our mission [at Behind the Bench] is to make a difference in the lives of others through our collective efforts. I have preached that mantra for years,” Johnson says. “I am proud to say that we raised over 1 million dollars for charitable organizations all over the country, most notably during the NBA All-Star Weekend.” More recently, Johnson just completed a four-year tenure as vice president of membership for The Phoenix Chapter of the Links, Inc.; has served as a board member of the Arizona Foundation for Women; and has been a member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. for 12 years, four of those acting as vice president (she is now an associate member). She is thankful for the opportunities she received in part through her husband’s career, but also recognizes the need for those in her position to take the initiative to find their own paths in life. “My biggest advice for other sports wives is to work really hard to find their passion so that they can have a life outside of their husbands. Too many times, we get lost in our husbands’ shadows when, often times, we have so much to offer.” Eddie also played a strong role in motivating Johnson to use her tools and experience to launch her own business. “It was my husband, Eddie, who encouraged me to start my own business. One day, he said, ‘Joy, you are very good at what you do, and you should start your own business.’” So, in 2001, Johnson started her own event planning company, A Joyous Event Planning & Management, LLC, (www.ajoyousevents.com), which plans and manages all types of events in the Phoenix area. “I plan anything and everything: weddings, fashion shows, specialty birthday

parties, grand openings, baby showers, conferences. All people have to do is give me a vision for their event and let me run with it!” Through A Joyous Event, she has planned events for the former governor, the Honorable Jane Dee Hull; NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith; recording artist Tamia, the wife of former Phoenix Suns player, Grant Hill; and Patrick Peterson of the Arizona Cardinals. It was also through her company that Johnson hosted The 48 Most Intriguing Women of Arizona luncheon for more than 700 people as part of her role as vice chair of the official Centennial Legacy Project in 2012. She also helped coproduce the coffee table book that highlighted the significant contributions of 48 women in honor of Arizona’s Centennial. “That project was honored in the Arizona Historical Society Museum for one year, and my coproducer and I got to design the exhibit,” she says. “It was truly a humbling experience.”

Lending a Helping Hand True to her desire to help women and families, Johnson and her husband became involved with Helping Hands for Single Moms, a local organization that assists low-income single mothers in pursuing a college education and financial stability. In 2013, Eddie was a presenting speaker at Helping Hands for Single Moms’ annual My Mom, My Hero event, which sparked the idea for the Johnsons to create their own foundation to better support the causes dear to them. “During Eddie’s speech, he described the love and respect he has for his mom, Doris, who raised him and his six siblings. After he spoke, Helping Hands was touched by his candor and approached him regarding a collaboration to implement an event together, hence, Eddie Johnson & Friends was born.” Today, Eddie Johnson & Friends spearheads the My Mom, My Hero event to further promote solidarity amongst professional athletes in an effort to bring more awareness and raise funds for single moms who are working to make a better life for their children. They help

57

recruit other professional athletes or friends to their cause, working with the likes of Larry Fitzgerald, Dan Majerle, Tom Chambers, Mark West and Alvan Adams, to name a few. The third annual My Mom, My Hero event took place this past September, in which nearly $45,000 was raised, bringing the total raised funds by the event to more than $124,000 in the past three years. The high-energy event featured mothers from the world of professional sports, including Brenda Warner, Lucille O’Neal and Eddie’s mother, Doris Johnson, who had her own memories of Eddie’s speech three years prior. Perhaps Doris’ most poignant moment was when someone in the crowd asked, “What is the most important thing you can say to the moms?” Her response: “Just love [the kids], love them, love them.” As a mother of two now-grown children herself, Johnson is grateful for her husband being a constant in their lives, even if his NBA career kept him on the go when their kids were young. But it is also Eddie’s own upbringing that makes the event all the more meaningful to Johnson. “My husband was raised by a single mom, so over the years, I have heard about the struggles that Doris had raising seven children alone. She has said that if there had been organizations like Helping Hands when she was raising her children, what a blessing it would’ve been,” Johnson says. “I am inspired by these women who work so diligently to educate themselves so that they can make a better life for themselves and their children.” Johnson aims to continue to grow her business alongside her philanthropic work for years to come, and she hopes to inspire more women to pursue their goals, professionally and personally, regardless of their perceived privilege (or lack thereof). “Having my own business has been important for me because it has given me an identity outside of being ‘Eddie Johnson’s wife.’ Once I turned my gift of planning into my occupation, my selfesteem grew leaps and bounds,” Johnson says. “I realize that I am extremely fortunate that many people see the value in what I do, as a small business owner who is able to generate results.”

Though Scottsdale ArtWalk takes place year-round, the cooler November weather provides the perfect backdrop for strolling through the Scottsdale Arts District. Known as “America’s original art walk,” the tradition began in 1975 and continues to thrive, with many galleries welcoming passersby in to view works of art. Pictured is Gallery Andrea, which showcases captivating landscapes and abstracts – often with brilliant pops of color – by international artist Andrea de Kerpely-Zak, among others. Wine While You Shop

Sipping wine while you shop for new workout gear is kind of like having your cake and eating it too, right? Well, at Scottsdale Quarter’s Lululemon you can do just that! Every Wednesday evening through December, Lululemon shoppers can head to the retailer’s patio from 5 to 7 p.m. to enjoy complimentary vino from Sorso Wine Room. Shoppers will also receive a gift certificate for 10 percent off food at Sorso or a “buy one bottle, get a second bottle half off” at Sorso’s Wine Market, valid every Wednesday between 6 and 9 p.m.

Play Ball!

Sure, we all flock to the baseball field for spring training. But have you checked out the Arizona Fall League? This month, head to Scottsdale Stadium to cheer on your home team, the Scottsdale Scorpions. On Nov. 19, Scottsdale Stadium will play host to the league championship game, where the Scorpions will take on top minor league players from both the American and National leagues. For more information, visit www.scottsdaleaz. gov/scottsdale-stadium.

A Cultural Excursion

Art and history buffs, take a day trip to sites – including those right here in the Valley – that you may never have seen. Inspired by SMoCA’s exhibition, Architecture + Art: Everything Falls into Place When It Collapses, the museum is hosting this architectural exploration (dubbed Arizona Obsucra) Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. You’ll travel south to visit the 700-year-old Casa Grande Ruins National Monument and enjoy a picnic lunch on-site before heading back to Phoenix for a private tour of Tovrea Castle. The final stop will be the Mystery Castle. Nestled on South Mountain, this 18-room castle was built in the 1930s and inhabited by the builder’s daughter until 2010. After witnessing how the desert has inspired these three landmarks, you’ll return to the museum. A $75 ticket includes transportation, entry into all landmarks and lunch. www.smoca.org.

Essence of Autumn

Delight in the telltale signs of fall with Agave, The Arizona Spa’s new seasonal treatment: The Essence of Autumn Facial. This 50-minute facial uses the fruit of the season – pumpkin – to help brighten and smooth the complexion while softening the skin and boosting collagen production. But the oh-so-fall experience goes beyond that. During your treatment, you’ll hear, smell and see hints of the season – the sound of a breeze rustling through trees, the scent of spicy cinnamon and clove, and a vibrant video of red and gold leaves projected on the ceiling overhead. You can also choose either a pumpkin spice smoothie pretreatment, or opt for an apple cider mimosa afterwards. Pricing starts at $159 and will be offered now through Nov. 27 at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. www.kierlandresort.com. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

EXPERIENCE

COUNTS!

Dr. Andrew Wolin brings over 20 years of experience in using patient’s own fat to sculpt and contour faces, breasts and bodies

LIPS AND LINES

So... you’ re looking in the magnifying mirror as you put on your eyeshadow, your mascara and your cheek foundation and now you get a good look at your lips. A gasp of disbelief permeates the atmosphere. “ Where did those lines come from...I didn’t see them there last week.. how will I ever hide the grooves and lines with my lip liner and lipstick? At the Wolin Plastic Surgery Center, Dr Andrew Wolin has found multiple solutions to the “lips and LInes” dilemma. For the past few years Dr Wolin has incorporated his 20 year experience with fat transfer with his 20 year experience with laser skin therapy to eradicate all those irregularities and grooves in the lips. By using MICROFAT transfer of a patient’s own fat and combining the MICRO FAT transfer with laser therapy, he has been able to conquer the battle of the lip lines. The procedure is an office procedure done under local anesthesia, taking less than 45 minutes. Not only is FAT being transferred, but STEM CELLS and growth factors are also transferred with the fat to improve the overall health of the lips as well as the appearance.

For those patients that want a faster, less permanent solution to the lip problems, Dr Wolin is using Micro Cannula injection of Juvederm to provide a painless and bruiseless solution to the lip line problem.

SS_60_63LowDown_Nov16.indd 61

For those who are looking to rejuvenate an aging lip or simply add volume to a lifelong thin lip, there are also fat transfer options for long term permanent correction or Juvederm for a shorter term temporary fix. By utilizing blunt cannulas rather than needles, the procedures are almost painless, do not cause bruising and provide the patients with a great experience.

Call The Wolin Plastic Surgery Center for your new fuller, smoother and more kissable lips...

Dr Wolin is the director of the Wolin Plastic Surgery Center and has been practicing aesthetic surgery in Scottsdsle for the last 28 years. CHAR KITCHEN + BAR

HOT NOODLES COLD SAKE

If you love salsa and spice, you’re in for a treat with Scottsdale’s newest Mexican restaurant, Tia Shorty’s. Located at Indian Bend and Scottsdale roads, the restaurant welcomes guests with the vibrancy of Mexico – colorful lanterns hang from the ceiling and sugar skull art adorns the walls, both conjuring the atmosphere of a Dia de los Muertos festival. Owner Tina Padilla – Tia Shorty herself – grew up in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and, together with her family, shares those authentic flavors on her menu with a range of Mexican favorites, including tamales, a variety of tacos and churros drizzled with caramel.

A new restaurant, Char Kitchen + Bar, is now open in Hilton Village in the space that formerly housed Bink’s Scottsdale. While the eatery will undergo minimal interior changes as it transitions, the menu itself is a new culinary foray, with dishes influenced by the father-and-son owners’ Albanian heritage, highlighting flavors from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. Kick off your meal with the mezze platter, of homemade hummus, red pepper chutney, cucumber dill sauce, roasted vegetables and fresh pita bread. Entrees include grilled lamb chops with chimichurri sauce and Atlantic salmon with charred lemon vinaigrette. And make sure to try the restaurant’s namesake items: Charred skewers, including steak, chicken, shrimp and veggie, served with basmati rice and tzatziki sauce. www.charkitchen.com.

In line with the ramen trend making its delicious way through the Valley, a new place to get your noodle fix has opened up in Scottsdale. What began as a popup ramen night at Posh Restaurant every Tuesday became so popular that Posh’s chef Joshua Hebert decided his pop-up needed to be permanent. With just about 24 seats, the venue is an intimate space where diners can choose from five types of ramen – goma, shoyu, miso, shrimp and vegan – plus Japanese staples like gyoza, steamed buns and edamame. And, of course, sake (and beer) are available. www.hotnoodlescoldsake.com.

6 THINGS WE’RE LOVING THIS MONTH Hiking any time of the day. Shopping outdoors at Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons without breaking a sweat. Sipping a cocktail while cozied up to a crackling fire at jade bar. Strolling through the Scottsdale Artisan Markets on Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Watching the sunset from Flourish’s outdoor terrace or Orange Sky’s 14th-floor patio. Warming up with a bowl of New England clam chowder on Fridays at the recently renovated (and renamed) Wally’s American Gastropub.

he Heart Ball is well-known throughout the Valley as a beautiful fundraising and social event supporting the American Heart Association and heart disease prevention. Since 1959, Phoenix Heart Ball volunteers have raised more than $30 million to educate Arizonans on obesity, help people create healthier lives, and prevent heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death, respectively. Heart Ball funds raised support the American Heart Association’s cuttingedge research, lifesaving prevention and education programs for improved health. Research funded by the association has led to advancements in the diagnosis, care and treatment of heart disease and stroke, while community education initiatives include the Halle Heart Children’s Museum, the only hands-on educational museum of its kind. This year’s event has a unique mission: to support women and heart disease. A staggering fact is that heart disease causes one in three women’s deaths each year – more than all cancers combined. And who better to support this mission than the Heart Ball’s committee of 100 women who work throughout the year to raise funds for prevention, education and research programs in our community? The committee, comprised of business, civic, community and philanthropic women from across the Valley, serve as heart health ambassadors for the American Heart Association. The 2016 Executive Team has been leading the way in raising funds this year and includes: Jennifer Carmer (chairman), Carolyn Jackson and Kristine Thompson (vice chairmen), Nan Howlett (sweetheart), Char Hubble (chairman elect), and Marilyn and David Alexander (honorary chairmen). Attire for this festive gala is blacktie and ball gown. This year’s theme is “Hearts in Rhythm,” and the event will kick off with a cocktail reception followed by dinner and dancing in The Phoenician’s Grand Ballroom.

Is she 38 or 58?

Look decades younger with Dr. Semone Rochlin’s J-Plasma Skin Rejuvenation It is true that with age comes wisdom and, unfortunately, wrinkles. That is, until Valley surgeon Semone Rochlin, D.O., FACOS, introduced to her practice a revolutionary skin rejuvenation treatment: J-Plasma Skin Resurfacing. J-Plasma turns back the hands of time and is fairly new in aesthetic medicine. However, Dr. Rochlin got her hands on the innovative technology almost instantly. Her practice was one of the first in Arizona to offer J-Plasma, along with her long list of other services. “We have been offering our Scottsdale and Gilbert patients this nonsurgical technique for four months now,” Dr. Rochlin says. What makes J-Plasma different from other laser treatments, such as CO2? J-Plasma is much safer and more precise. “Unlike other laser treatments, J-Plasma leaves no lines of demarcation,” Dr. Rochlin says. J-Plasma passes an inert helium gas flow over a metal blade to produce a luminous plasma stream for the surgical effect. The luminous plasma stream, or energized gas, resurfaces and revitalizes the skin back to its youthful appearance. Dr. Rochlin’s steady artisan hands along with J-Plasma’s advance technology can eliminate wrinkles and lip lines and other common signs of aging and sun damage to the face.

J-Plasma increases the skin’s natural collagen production, which tightens and lifts skin around the eyes, lips and cheeks. It offers patients a nonsurgical alternate to a facelift and eyelid surgery – and at reasonable price. “This is one of the most profound technologies I have seen for the nonsurgical setting. It truly is a game-changer when it comes to improving the quality of skin.” What can you anticipate from treatment? J-Plasma procedures are often performed with the use of local anesthesia. Anesthesia may be unnerving to some patients, but Dr. Rochlin and her team have created an environment of privacy, safety and comfort. Most patients’ skin conditions do not require multiple treatments of J-Plasma, but instead, as Dr. Rochlin says, a “one and done” visit that takes only an hour. “Ultimately, no one likes to age. I feel very privileged to be able to make my patients feel good about themselves, and there is nothing better than that!” Dr. Rochlin strives to provide patients with a natural appearance by bringing symmetry and balance to the face in more ways than one. She accomplishes this with nonsurgical techniques like J-Plasma Skin Rejuvenation. At last, you can be wise without wrinkles. To learn more about Dr. Rochlin’s practice and book your J-Plasma Skin Rejuvenation, call 602.653.0540 or visit www.drrochlin.com.

BROWN’S RANCH TRAILHEAD: McDowell Sonoran Preserve 30301 N. In addition to hikers, the trailhead shares the route with bikers and horseback riders and provides access to Granite Mountain, Cholla Mountain, Brown’s Mountain, Balanced Rock and Cathedral Rock.

cottsdale boasts more than 320 miles of maintained hiking trails, and that combined with November’s idyllic weather simply beckons Valley dwellers outdoors. Sure, everyone knows about hiking Camelback Mountain, but what about some of the area’s other great trails? Whether you’d like an easier hike with the family (or your dog) or a more challenging one to get a cardio kick, we’ve got you covered with five of our favorites.

GATEWAY LOOP TRAILHEAD: McDowell Sonoran Preserve 18333 N. Thompson Peak Pkwy., Scottsdale Located in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, this trailhead is a great starting point for all hikers, and is the largest one in Scottsdale. With more than 120 miles of trails, and plenty of different hikes to choose from, it’s got something for both novice and experienced hikers. You can keep things easy with the Bajada Nature Trail, or make a day of it and hike the 10-plus mile trail to the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead. The preserve features nice facilities, plenty of parking and the trails are dog-friendly. Plus, there are guided hike options through the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy so you don’t have to hit the trails on your own. PINNACLE PEAK SUMMIT TRAIL: Pinnacle Peak Park 26802 N. 102nd Way, Scottsdale The 150-acre Pinnacle Peak Park offers access to a moderately difficult hike that stretches 1.75 miles each way and reaches an elevation of nearly 3,000 feet. The trail offers lots of parking, shaded spots for a picnic, restrooms, drinking water and, of course, some spectacular views of Pinnacle Peak. On the evening of Nov. 14, the park is even hosting a guided full moon hike. TOM’S THUMB TRAILHEAD: McDowell Sonoran Preserve 23015 N. 128th St., Scottsdale Tom’s Thumb Trailhead offers access to its namesake trail, Tom’s Thumb, one of Arizona’s most well-known hikes, as well as Windgate Overlook, Gardener’s Wall, Sven Slab, Mesquite Canyon and the Windmill Trail. The notorious 11-mile Tom’s Thumb hike is strenuous, but we think the views of Four Peaks and the Verde River Valley make it worth the challenging trek. The trailhead offers shaded ramadas, restrooms and parking, but bring your own water (as you should on any hike) because there is none available.

SCULPTURES SPIN INTO SCOTTSDALE

A new interactive art installation puts a life-size twist on a beloved children’s toy BY JAMIE KILLIN PHOTOS BY JONATHAN HILLYER, COURTESY OF SCOTTSDALE PUBLIC ART

cottsdale Public Art has commissioned award-winning Mexican artists and designers Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena to bring their dynamic and interactive public art installation, Los Trompos, to Scottsdale Nov. 25 through March 1, 2017, in partnership with Scottsdale Arts. The installation consists of 10 brightly colored sculptures with “spinning tops” that serve as both artwork and rotating seating spaces. The sculptures will be at various locations across downtown Scottsdale and then merge for three days on Feb. 23-26, 2017, for Canal Convergence at the Scottsdale Waterfront. The artists drew inspiration for the sculptures from spinning top toys that have been made popular by children across the globe. They sought to imitate both the bright colors traditionally bestowed on the toys as well as their construction. The tops of the sculptures were created from fabric woven in a style traditionally done by Mexican artisans. Esrawe and Cadena, who are two of the leading designers in Mexico, prioritized incorporating Mexican traditions and craftsmanship into their work in a new and unexpected way. The interactive sculptures SO SCOTTSDALE! |

are constructed so that they are able to spin only when the visitors sitting on them work together to move them. The installation is intended to promote relaxation, social interaction and fun. “The concept behind Los Trompos is based on an approach of traditional toys, their colorful expression and the way they are constructed,” Esrawe says. “We wanted to talk about the traditions and skills of the craftsmen in Mexico, as an inheritance of our culture. We like the idea of translating these techniques into new symbols.” Esrawe is the founder of design firm Esrawe Studio and Cadena is the owner and creative director of CADENA+ASOC. CONCEPT DESIGN, both based in Mexico. More than six years ago, the two decided to collaborate and formed E + C, leading to the creation of Los Trompos. After the installation, Esrawe and Cadena will speak as a part of Scottsdale Public Art’s Conversation with the Artist series at Casablanca Lounge on Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. Tickets for the talk are available for $10 through the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts box office at 480.499.8587.

cuisine

Market Street Kitchen is an award-winning, market-driven restaurant and lounge that emphasizes modern twists on rustic American fare – with a brand-new executive chef, Michael Hunn, at the helm. SO, WE HAVE BOLOGNA TO THANK FOR GETTING YOU INTO COOKING? In a way, yes! Growing up, my dad was an executive for Oscar Mayer and Kraft. Of course, in addition to getting exposed to food by these mega-brands firsthand, I was also enthralled by watching both my Italian grandmother and Julia Child – albeit Julia on television – in the kitchen, too. WHAT PHILOSOPHY DO YOU USE IN THE KITCHEN? Running a restaurant well is a team sport. I am a huge believer in building an amazing staff and doing everything I can to motivate them to be their best. It is similarly important to build and maintain great relationships with the sales teams we work with, from our seafood and cheese vendors to our fresh produce providers. Every position and every person counts. WHAT IS YOUR GAME PLAN? My goal is to continue to emphasize communal dining and wood-fired rotisserie cooking. You can expect us to pay homage to our amazing wine and cocktail menus as well with themed dinners and special pairing options starting this winter. And keep an eye out for seafood and other specials coming down the line. WHAT IS YOUR CULINARY BACKGROUND? I got my start as a dishwasher in Chicago. I moved up to cooking positions in Chicago at the Four Seasons, McCormick & Schmick’s, Pili Pili and Rosebud before making my way to Arizona to serve as a chef at Bloom and then Roy’s. I eventually left Phoenix for Las Vegas to join the Light Group, where I managed concepts at the Mirage, Monte Carlo and Aria, among others. Eventually, though, I wanted to come back to the Valley to be a part of the culinary movement in Phoenix. WHAT IS THE CRAZIEST THING YOU’VE EVER COOKED OR HAD TO EAT? I pride myself on always trying everything twice. Everything, that is, except cow bile soup. Never again! Market Street Kitchen, 20825 N. FIRST FROST Citizen Public House’s foray into fall flavors BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO COURTESY OF AWE COLLECTIVE

E

very year, as temperatures start to dip, the mixology team at Citizen Public House is tasked with dreaming up “authentically autumn” cocktails. “For many people, this means developing new takes on pumpkin and spice,” says Brian Goodwin, beverage director at Citizen Public House. “But this year we wanted to do something different.” Enter the First Frost ($12). It starts with 1.5 ounces of Wheelers Western Dry Gin, which is unique in that it is made with several desert botanicals beyond the usual juniper found in most gins, including sage. “Sage screams fall and really lightens up the flavor. As soon as we tasted it, we were inspired,” Goodwin says. The next component, 1 ounce of Neige Apple Ice Wine from Canada, is combined with the gin to add sweetness. “Neige leaves the apples on the tree until the absolute end of the harvest, which results in a much sweeter fruit,” says Goodwin, who balances the gin and apple ice wine with a touch of Cointreau orange liqueur and bitters. The cocktail is then stirred over large format ice that very slightly dilutes the spirits while chilling them. Once chilled, the First Frost is strained into a cocktail glass and garnished with thyme and a dehydrated orange slice. “The thyme lends an herbaceous aroma along with the citrus notes from the orange,” Goodwin says. “The apple flavor is front and center right away – giving off an essence of a hard cider without too much sweetness – and then the gin, especially the sage, hits you at the end.” Citizen Public House, 7111 E. 5th Ave., Scottsdale; 480.398.4208; www.citizenpublichouse.com.

A bartender has the ability to elevate a customer’s experience from good to great. Whether it’s through creating an innovative libation or exuding a generous spirit – or perhaps offering a generous pour and some company – there’s no doubt the person behind the bar is part of the overall imbibing experience. We sipped our way around town to find those bartenders who not only craft a fabulous cocktail but also play an excellent bar game, bringing personality and pizzazz to everything they do while always putting patrons first.

TAMMY ABNEY

Bartender at Mastro’s City Hall Steakhouse Bartending since: 1994 What do you love about bartending? What I love most about bartending is meeting new and interesting people, as well as maintaining the relationships with the customers we already have. Throughout the years, I have met some unbelievable people and am blessed to still have them in my life. Favorite drink to make: My favorite drink to make is anything with fresh muddled fruits, cucumbers, mint, etc. We have many cocktails that incorporate these ingredients –they bring out so many flavors and are truly refreshing! Favorite drink you’ve created: I’m recently hooked on a concoction of fresh muddled strawberries, mint, simple syrup, vodka and soda with a strawberry garnish. You find inspiration in: My inspiration comes from one of my best friends, Linda, who has ALS, and is one of the strongest people I know. She has taught me the meaning of how to live each day for the moment. I translate this into my job by treating people with the utmost respect and making sure their dining experience is always a memorable one. Drink that is ordered most at your bar: At Mastro’s, we use our own mixologists to reinvent and create some extraordinary cocktails. One particular favorite is the Dream Berry Martini, which is extremely popular with many of our guests. What do you order when you go out? I prefer to drink a nice pinot noir or red blend. Any secret bartending tip or talent? Greeting the customer with a smile and introducing yourself as well as learning his or her name. A strong aspect to being a bartender is maintaining a high level of service and ensuring a guest’s overall experience leaves a lasting impression so they can’t wait to come back. Building that relationship is key to building a customer for life. Mastro’s City Hall Steakhouse, 6991 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; 480.941.4700; www.mastrosrestaurants.com.

SALLY CICORA

Bartender and bar coach at Ruth’s Chris Steak House Bartending since: 1994 What do you love about bartending? My guests. Every day, I meet new people and I am blessed to see the smiling faces of my regulars. They are more than just my guests; they are an extension of my family. Ruth’s Chris is so much more than a restaurant – it’s home to many! Favorite drink to make: Blackberry Sidecar, made of muddled blackberries, cognac, Cointreau and fresh lemon juice with a sugar-rimmed glass over ice. The Blackberry Sidecar is a showstopper when it goes across the bar. It’s so colorful! It’s a drink that has a good kick to it but has a perfect sweetness. Favorite drink you’ve created: Angel’s Manhattan, comprised of Angel’s Envy Bourbon, Tuaca liqueur and orange bitters on the rocks, garnished with a fresh vanilla bean. You find inspiration in: I find inspiration in my co-workers. At Ruth’s, we have the best team in town. We all take it to the next level for our guests. When I see each of them do that, it inspires me to always try to give our guests the best steakhouse experience they have ever had. Each team member plays a key role, especially my partner in crime behind the bar, Todd Hoffman. Drink that is ordered most at your bar: Dirty Grey Goose martini with blue cheese olives. Person you’d most like to pour a drink: Tim Tebow, who is someone I admire for many reasons. His leadership abilities and never-give-up attitude are truly amazing. Tebow always steps up when the majority of people would sit down. Now, he has started a new chapter in his career as an MLB player. He is the newest member of our Scottsdale Scorpions. I would love to welcome him to the Valley “Sally-style.” What do you order when you go out? Jameson and ginger ale. Any secret bartending tip or talent? Always smile – you never know whose day you are going to brighten. Ruth’s Chris Steak House, 7001 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.991.5988; www.ruthschris.com.

JOSEPH SCHWARTZ Bartender at Fox Cigar Bar and Old Town Tavern Bartending since: 2002

What do you love about bartending? I love meeting new people and creating an atmosphere for people to have a good time. I have actually met many of my good friends working, and I love the social atmosphere. Favorite drink to make: Hands down has to be a Manhattan. I love whiskey and cocktails, and this is the perfect mix. A Manhattan is hard to mess up but also takes a certain touch to make perfect. Favorite drink you’ve created: It’s a twist on a Manhattan. Two parts of a mixable rye (Templeton is my choice) and one half part Benedictine, garnished with a lemon twist. I like the way it layers on the palate. I’m probably not the first person to make this drink, but I haven’t seen it anywhere. You find inspiration in: I love trying new things one wouldn’t think of combining together. I’ll always try anything at least once. Going out to new places and trying other bartenders’ cocktails is eye-opening for new ideas. I like to get inspiration from that and go back to try new things on my own. My regulars are my guinea pigs. Drink that is ordered most at your bar: Single malt scotch or an old fashioned. At Fox Cigar Bar, I have to say we have the best scotch/whiskey selection in Scottsdale. Person you’d most like to pour a drink: Bruce Arians. I am a native and a huge Arizona Cardinals fan. I would love to talk with him about life and just pick his brain about everything. To me, he is the epitome of cool. Any secret bartending tip or talent? Smile, smile, smile. People go out to have a good time, and it doesn’t matter if you’re three deep or just have a few people at your bar, they come out to have fun. You have to be able to talk with guests while working and have fun. Fox Cigar Bar, 7443 E. 6th Ave., Scottsdale; 480.214.5011; www. foxtobacco.com. Old Town Tavern, 7320 E. JASON BRODY

Bartender and general manager at Nick’s Italian Restaurant Bartending since: 2011 What do you love about bartending? For me, life’s about being dynamic and that’s something you can be behind a bar. I love the fact that when I’m bartending, no two days will ever be the same. I interact with all kinds of different people on a daily basis. There aren’t too many general managers who get to bartend as well and put in 60-plus hours a week. I always tell people that bartending is the “fun part” of my job a few nights a week! You find inspiration in: Work ethic and individual growth are both inspirational for me. There’s also an important female in my life who inspires me: my Mama. She’s a beautiful, strong and balanced lady who has taught me so much about life and brings out the best in me! Drink that is ordered most at your bar: We have a great wine program at Nick’s so I’d say I open and pour a lot of wine. I also make a lot of martinis – vodka martinis and Manhattans are pretty popular shakes for me. Person you’d most like to pour a drink: My dad. I miss that man more than anyone will ever know. He passed before I was able to pour a cocktail for him or even throw one back with him. I’d give anything to make him his go-to “vodka on the rocks with a couple of olives.” What do you order when you go out? I occasionally drink high-end red wine, but otherwise I only order two things: Casamigos Blanco Tequila on the rocks or Stolichnaya Elit Vodka on the rocks. Any secret bartending tip or talent? You have to be an artist behind the bar. It’s also crucial to attract and retain a quality customer base and develop solid relationships along the way. I wouldn’t be where I’m at without all of my regulars. Nick’s Italian Restaurant, Tatum and Shea location, 10810 N. Tatum Blvd., Phoenix; 602.953.1100; www.nicksitalian.com.

LIBBY LONGLOTT First mate mixologist at UnderTow Bartending since: 2009

What do you love about bartending? I love creating the excitement in my patrons’ bar experience. The fulfillment and satisfaction that I get out of making the perfect bar experience, whether it be through guiding my guest to the perfect drink for their palate, or through something as simple as great conversation and energy ... that moment of internal acknowledgment that I’m making someone’s night is what I love most about my craft. Favorite drink to make: Anything involving fire. Favorite drink you’ve created: A spirituous-stirred drink with the bones of a Negroni (typically made of gin, vermouth rosso and Campari, garnished with orange peel), made with mezcal, aperitif and Italian amaro. I like using classic cocktails as a template and substituting in more modern and interesting spirits. You find inspiration in: Fashion, food and trends in modern culture. Drink that is ordered most at your bar: The Smoking Cannon or The Pirate’s Remorse. Person you’d most like to pour a drink: My great grandmother, Ruth. Born in 1910, she was alive from the sinking of the Titanic, through Prohibition, the Great Depression and all the times of war. She was drinking whiskey sours until the ripe old age of 100! I’d love nothing more than to make her a proper Manhattan and pick her brain on her life experiences. What do you order when you go out? Usually a Negroni to sip on while I dive into the cocktail menu. Any secret bartending tip or talent? Stay positive! Surround yourself with people you can learn from, take the time to read and just have fun. UnderTow, 3620 E. Indian School Road; Phoenix; 602.753.6504; www.undertowphx.com.

BRENT KARLICEK Beverage director at Upward Projects Bartending since: 2001

What do you love about bartending? Building a connection with the guests and delivering inspired hospitality through well-crafted beverages and dialogue. The whole goal is to take someone’s sense of well-being from a five to a 10. Favorite drink to make: I love making anything stirred. There is a sense of Zen when building the drink and then finding that perfect balance of dilution. With that in mind, a simple, stirred Manhattan is my favorite drink to make. Favorite drink you’ve created: Right now we have a cocktail on the menu at Windsor that is my all-time favorite. It’s called the No. 40, and it’s made with Demerara rum, mezcal, house strawberry syrup and Cocchi Barolo Chinato. There is a complexity with the blending of spirits, with a luscious pot still rum and the agave-forward and smoke-infused mezcal. You find inspiration in: Exploring new cities on foot – feeling the pulse, tasting the flavors and connecting with the culture. Drink that is ordered most at your bar: The No. 17, containing house cucumber-infused vodka, Revolution Green Tea Syrup and fresh cucumber juice with torn mint and lime. Person you’d most like to pour a drink: Sasha Petraske, the late Milk & Honey owner. The first time I visited Sasha’s bar, I started thinking about cocktails from a totally new perspective. What do you order when you go out? I always start with the bartender’s choice, something they’re proud of, and then I follow that up with a nice pour of mezcal, neat. Any secret bartending tip or talent? Always look to leverage the talents of an incredible team. A solid beverage program rarely comes from one mind, so opening the door for collaboration and creative growth is the key. Windsor, 5223 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; 602.279.1111; www.windsoraz.com. What do you love about bartending? People watching! Being a bartender is the best job at the party. You get to meet and interact with new people, learn about their lives and connect with them, make cocktails, run around at a fast pace, and have fun with your team. Best of all, there’s no hangover in the morning. Favorite drink to make: I love when the guest gives me carte blanche to do whatever. Those are the times I really enjoy getting to be spontaneous and creative. I start off with a few questions to establish a few guidelines and go from there. Favorite drink you’ve created: The Job Well Done – it’s Elijah Craig Bourbon that’s first infused with toasted coconut. After that I add bitters and Orgeat. It’s strong, sweet and unexpected. It’s the perfect cocktail to pair with the fall weather. You find inspiration in: Food! I love to eat and try new flavor combinations. It gets my gears turning as I try placing flavor ideas with different liquors to see what might work. I have about a dozen notes on different flavor combinations to try. Sometimes the most random ideas are the best cocktails. Drink that is ordered most at your bar: I’d say the Private Eye. It’s a really fun interactive cocktail that’s served with a giant cloud of pink strawberry cotton candy in an empty glass. Then the customer pours a lemon, cassis and Champagne cocktail over it and watches as the cotton candy dissolves into the drink. Surprisingly, it’s not sweet and is really well-balanced. Once we sell the first one of the night, everyone sees it and wants to know what it is. Any secret bartending tip or talent? Learn the classics! Those recipes will be your best friend. They really help to build a solid foundation and understanding of how to build a well-balanced cocktail. or many, a luxury farmhouse escape to Italy’s Tuscany region is one of those dream vacations, the kind that you must simply make once in a lifetime. And there’s nothing more perfect for that bucket list journey than Montestigliano, a quaint estate set among the undulating Tuscan countryside and vineyards.

The Heart of Tuscany Tuscany is in central Italy, the epicenter of Renaissance Italy. Montestigliano is about an hour outside of the Tuscan capital of Florence, and it is the perfect place for you to immerse yourself in the heart and soul of Tuscan life whether you’re planning a long vacation, a short trip or searching for a unique wedding venue. Montestigliano, a farm from the 1700s situated on more than 2,475 acres, operates as a private holiday retreat by the Donati family. It sits about 7.5 miles from the town of Siena and life here is a bit slower. Days are utterly blissful, filled with local cuisine, peaceful vistas, delicious wine and long walks. For something completely unique to Tuscany, set forth on an excursion to Degusta la Cinta Senese. The Cinta Senese are indigenous pigs that were almost extinct. Thanks to a breeding program, they are now a delicacy. Take a tour of the farm, learn about the healthy meat, and sample the wares. Take a stroll through nearby Siena, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the cathedral dates back to the 1300s. Make your way to Piazza del Campo, the town’s fan-shaped center, with its magnificent Torre del Mangia. The famed Palio horse race runs here each year, turning the tranquil town a bit crazy with the Tuscan version of the Running of the Bulls. Indeed, there is something magical about Tuscany – grab a flute of prosecco and sit back to watch the sun cast shadows across the hills. Here in Tuscany, you connect the heartiness of the earth with the expansiveness of the heavens in a way that doesn’t happen anywhere else. Learn more at www.montestigliano.it.

dental breakthrough can now correct receding gums without painful cutting and stitches – or the need to take time off work for recovery. Experts say the newly developed pinhole gum rejuvenation is quick, painless and can be done in the time it takes to eat lunch. Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang of Scottsdale's SC Dentistry is now offering the instant transformation of the defective gum line which will enable thousands of people achieve a healthy and beautiful smile immediately, virtually pain free and with no stitches and no downtime. Gum recession is the loss of gum tissue along the gum line. This can occur as a result of periodontal disease, the natural aging process or bad teeth brushing habits. When gum recession occurs the root structure of the tooth becomes exposed, meaning tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gum line and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness. Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation is done by Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang numbing the gum tissue with a local anesthetic. Then a tiny entry point the size of a ballpoint pen tip is made above or below the teeth

being treated. Then, Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang passes specialized instruments carefully under the gum tissue to reposition it to cover the recessed area. Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang will then pass tiny collagen strips through the opening and insert them under the gum. The strips keep the tissue in place until the patients body produces new collagen to fix the receding gums. The procedure takes about an hour to an hour and a half depending on how many teeth are involved. The hole heals quickly and is almost undetectable in a day ERIK P. SVANS DDS or so. This revolutionary method replaces the old painful technique where tissue would have to be removed from the roof of the mouth and then be grafted into the area where the gum had moved away from the tooth. This was very painful, and consisted of stitches followed by two to three weeks of recovery time with pain medicine. The results were sometimes hit or miss. Don’t continue to suffer with the discomfort of sensitive teeth or be afraid to smile! SC Dentistry provides all aspects of Dental Care, from cleanings to full mouth rehabilitation and works STEVEN C. CHANG DDS with many insurance plans.

Losing It for the Long Haul The Gastrotrim Center helps change your relationship with food, for unprecedented results that people can’t stop talking about.

I

f the numbers on your scale make you frown, you’re in good company – an astonishing 66% of the American population is overweight or obese, laboring under the unhealthy stress of extra mass. And if you ask most of them, they’d say they’re interested in getting rid of it. But losing weight, especially a substantial amount, can be a struggle. And it doesn’t stop there; keeping it off presents another frustrating challenge, with most people who lose weight through diet and exercise gaining it back within a short period of time. Weight loss surgery such as gastric bypass can garner impressive results, but is an invasive procedure – also often completely negated by regained weight over time. So much money, effort, and hassle for such a temporary result.

But for those seeking successful, sustained weight loss, there’s finally a light at the end of the tunnel. It depends on much more than just diet or exercise, says Swarnjit Singh, MD, MBBS, MRCP – who, along with his partner Brendan Levy, MD, is one of the gastroenterology professionals behind the wildly successful

Gastrotrim Center. Its effective weight loss programs combine an FDA-approved, minimally invasive surgical procedure with not only expert nutritional guidance, but a comprehensive psychological approach designed to help patients change their long-term relationship with food. Intragastric Balloon

Nutritional Counseling

Behavioral Therapy

According to Dr. Singh, obesity is not just a physical disease. “Refined carbohydrates and fats are very addictive,” he says. “They raise levels of dopamine, endorphins and certain endocannabinoids (“happy hormones”) in the striatum portion of the brain, similar to drugs such as cocaine, morphine, or methamphetamine.” As a result, people have a difficult time not only kicking the habit of eating poorly, but sticking with healthier habits in the long run, prone to “relapses” which can cause weight gain. And as with any addiction, quitting cold turkey almost never works. It takes more than that. With the Gastrotrim Program, patients undergo a simple non-surgical procedure to place a removable balloon in the stomach. This innovative procedure gives the results of weight loss surgery, yet is temporary and reversible – and

Dr. Swarnjit Singh

doesn’t present complications such as scarring or perforation, which can be typical of traditional bariatric surgeries. “This provides a valuable physical ‘jump start’ to weight loss,” says Dr. Singh. But it doesn’t stop there. Drs. Singh and Levy have partnered with the Valley area’s premiere psychologists and nutritionists to round out the program, addressing both physical and mental hurdles to ensure success – a unique, multi-pronged approach unavailable anywhere else. The result is a complete and comprehensive program, custom-tailored to fit the specific physiological and psychological needs of each patient, leading to weight loss that works for the long haul. Says Dr. Levy, “The Gastrotrim Program reshapes not only the body, but the entire mindset, giving the patient the means to lose the weight and the tools to make sure it stays off forever.” Finally: a weight loss solution that addresses all the causes of obesity. With all its success, it’s no wonder that the Gastrotrim Center is preparing to open two new locations in Peoria and Scottsdale to better serve the Phoenix metro area. For the Gastrotrim Center team, it’s extremely satisfying to watch the transformations of their patients. And for the patients themselves, it’s a life-changing decision that allows them to reclaim their health, vitality, and self-confidence – and adequately equips them to sustain it. Dr. Brendan Levy

he original Audi Q7 SUV has been around since 2007, when it was introduced to compete with Mercedes-Benz GLS, BMW X5 and Volvo XC90. But sales never approached those of the Mercedes-Benz or BMW offerings. For 2017, Audi has completely redesigned the Q7. In the process, it shed 474 pounds, an unusually huge amount for any vehicle. The most significant contributor to the weight loss is the extravagant use of aluminum in the chassis and operational parts, as well as in the doors, hood and body panels. The Q7 is also shorter and narrower, but the cabin is longer, offering more head, shoulder and knee room. There’s also more cargo room. The two

rows of rear seats fold flat and disappear to a flat load floor, yielding 71.6 cubic feet of cargo space. Under the hood is a 3.0-liter, supercharged, V-6 engine delivering 333 horsepower. An 8-speed automatic transmission delivers the power, but I was frustrated with the shifter that, on more than a few occasions, left me struggling to find the right gear. The Q7 has a tow rating of 7,700 pounds, an impressive amount for a vehicle not built on a truck chassis. According to Audi, Q7 will go from zero to 60 in just 5.7 seconds. On the road, Q7 drives more like a luxury sedan than an SUV, thanks to six available drive modes including off-road, comfort and dynamic. Still, it isn’t as sporty as the BMW X5. My Prestige trim level model (the highest of three trim levels) was equipped with optional four-wheel steering and adaptive air suspension that allows ground clearance to be raised nearly 2.5 inches. It had a starting price of $54,800, but optioned up to almost $73,000, loaded to the roof with technology such as the full-color highdefinition, 12.3-inch TFT Virtual Cockpit. There’s also the optional infotainment and telematics package, with 4G LTE data, smartphone connectivity and Wi-Fi service to two entertainment tablets for the rear cabin. My Q7 also came equipped with the driver assistance package, which includes adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, traffic sign recognition and high-beam assist. One system, the vehicle exit assist, warns occupants if a bicycle is approaching before they open the doors. Overall, the new Q7 is nothing short of an outstanding vehicle and a clear step up in luxurious first-class materials, build, quality and performance.

t’s the most wonderful time of the year – Champagne season! But are all sparklers created equal? And what’s the difference between all of the bubbly options being offered this holiday season? “While there are seven methods of sparkling wine production, the three most typically used produce the most popular bubblies on the market today – Champagne, prosecco and sparkling wine,” says Bill Terlato, chief executive officer of Terlato Wines International. According to Terlato, while most define Champagne as sparkling wine simply from Champagne, France; prosecco as the sparkling option from Italy; and then the more generic sparkling wine term for bubbles from America, the real delineation lies in the method of production.

Traditional Method This is the classic method of making Champagne. And yes, it should technically be from Champagne, France, and made in this method to be considered true Champagne. “In the traditional method, a combination of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier grapes is bottled with a wine solution of sugar and yeast called ‘liqueur de tirage,’ which starts a secondary fermentation in the bottle, producing carbon dioxide and yeast cells,” Terlato says. “The cells are collected in the neck of the bottle during the riddling process, then disgorged from the bottle and topped

with a solution of wine and sugar, resulting in the final product: Champagne.” Best bet for Champagne: PiperHeidsieck Rare 2002 ($180)

The tank method is a less labor intensive (and therefore less expensive) method of production, and often how prosecco is made. Prosecco begins as a still wine made from the glera grape, which dates all the way back to the Roman times. “Unlike those days, however, the wine is fermented in stainless steel pressurized tanks rather than in bottles,” Terlato explains. “This method results in limited contact with the yeast and larger bubbles than sparkling wine. It also often results in the wine being a bit more fruitforward than Champagne.” Best bet for prosecco: Nino Franco Rustico NV Valdobbiadene ($20)

Transfer Method Other sparkling wines – many from the U.S., Australia and New Zealand – follow the transfer method, which combines a bit of the previous methods. “Transfer begins exactly the same as the traditional method, but the wine is eventually transferred from the bottle to a pressurized tank, where the wine is separated from the sediment in bulk,” Terlato says. Best bet for sparkling: 2011 Schramsberg Vineyards Brut Napa Valley Carneros ($75)

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO COURTESY OF TWISTED GROVE PARLOR + BAR

Twisted Grove is about to blow your mind with its Gnocchi & Short Ribs ($19). Inspired during his annual “New York Foodcation” with his father, Chef Christopher Collins set out to make this fall dish all his own. The first step: Teaching himself to make gnocchi using housemade ricotta instead of potatoes. Next, Collins braises the short rib until it nearly falls off the bone, and he reduces the jus with his own chicken and beef broths for 12 hours until it becomes a decadently rich and savory sauce. Finally, he pairs it all with a heavenly Parmesan cream, zucca strips, blanched carrots and kale to make the perfect autumn entree. Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar, 8220 N. his time of year brings family and friends together, often over the dinner table. If playing chef for a large group beyond the standard Thanksgiving meal has you up in arms, six local eateries have you covered – there are plenty of restaurants that deliver the warm, familiar feeling that comes from sharing and passing dishes with loved ones. Restaurants that feature shared plates create a more social way of dining that is perfect for reconnecting and reliving fond memories over a meal. With that, get ready to dig in!

Carvalho’s Brazilian Kitchen When it comes to Brazilian fine dining, Carvalho’s is in a league of its own. This unique restaurant is tucked away in a

food files shopping center in North Scottsdale amid a myriad of specialty shopping boutiques. Here, the atmosphere is relaxed, the staff makes you feel like family, and the owners share the uncommon flavors of Brazil with passion. And then there’s the food. Most of their menu options are so massive, they are well-suited for sharing, especially the classic feijoada. The arrival of this traditional black bean stew at your table is a celebration in itself. You’ll receive bowl after bowl of individual components meant to enhance the dish and you and your guests can then revel in your creation. 23623 N. if you’re craving something a little left of traditional, make sure to check out the alfredo the dark pasta. This dish adds a kick of Southwest spice to their alfredo sauce with the addition of poblano peppers and a special blend of cheeses, garnished with a jalapeno and Oregano’s “south of the border” bread. 3102 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.970.1860; www.oreganos.com.

La Torretta Ristorante and Italian Steakhouse

La Torretta Ristorante and Italian Steakhouse The bright, inviting interior of La Torretta will instantly whisk you away to an old school Italian bistro, and the ample dinner portions encourage passing the dishes around the table. The ravioli ai funghi is delicate and infused with a floral bouquet by way of a light sage sauce, while the linguine alla Luciana is another light pasta dish that features calamari sauteed in white wine and dressed in a spicy tomato herb sauce. The clean flavors are the star here, and your guests will be too busy sopping up each dish’s sauce with the complimentary (and addictive) bread to tell you how much they love La Torretta, but trust us, they will. 16640 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.991.2000; www.latorrettaaz.com.

Oregano’s Pizza Bistro It’s a given that pizzas are meant to be shared, but this high-energy classic Italian restaurant has far more to offer than a slice or two of their thin crust, pan or stuffed pizzas. Oregano’s pasta dishes are massive and always too much for one mere mortal, no matter how deep your Italian roots go. The offerings range from the basic, as seen in their original bollo pasta and Italian flag lasagna. But

From the moment you walk through the threshold of Persian Room, you know that you are in for an exclusive and opulent dining experience. The menu showcases shared dining inspired by true Mediterranean feasts. While the entree options are massive and perfect for sharing, your best bets for an incredible shared experience are the combination platters. You can expect to feed at least three, possibly more, with the platters, which provide the opportunity to really immerse yourself in the cuisine. The Tour of Persia platter includes barg and koobideh (both seasoned varieties of meat), plus gheymeh bademjan (a mixture of veggies) with Zereshk polo (barberries and saffron mixed with basmati rice). The intense flavors of the Mediterranean are intoxicating and the luxurious atmosphere will delight you and your guests. 17040 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.614.1414; www.persianroom.com.

Wildfish Seafood Grille Osha Thai Cafe Do you have some serious heat lovers in your inner circle? The wild and eclectic Osha Thai menu offerings are enough to entice any Thai lover, but it’s the varied heat level that will keep them talking – between cooling sips of water, of course. As with many Thai places, the portions are huge, and you have the choice of stir-fry, curry, rice or noodles, with tons of options for each. If you’re up for a challenge, the “Thai hot” spice level will be calling your name, but for sharing purposes, you may want to err on the side of medium, unless your crew is the competitive type. Whether you opt for the Arizona heat wave red curry or the traditional favorite, pad thai, the intricate layers of flavor will shine through no matter how hot (or not) you make it. 10953 N. If you’ve had the occasion to dine here before, you know that in addition to the impressive sleek design of the restaurant, the seafood offerings are equally remarkable. Delight, and perhaps bewilder, your guests at the restaurant’s oyster bar with offerings such as chilled gulf shrimp and the atomic horseradish that it comes with, plus fresh, buttery Hawaiian yellowtail sashimi. The true standout, though, is the dramatic and extraordinary chilled shellfish tower that’s perfect for sharing, complete with Maine lobster, shrimp, oysters and jumbo lump crab. The presentation is sensational, and the combination of components are a testament to Wildfish’s commitment to the best available ingredients. And if you do want to diversify your Thanksgiving traditions, Wildfish is offering a holiday meal with all the trimmings, though the full regular menu will also be available. 7135 E. The iconic Camelback Inn ushers in two new concepts for its 90th anniversary BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTOS COURTESY OF JW MARRIOTT CAMELBACK INN RESORT & SPA

n 1936, the JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa opened its doors in Scottsdale. Its popularity among the celebrities of the day, in fact, is credited with helping contribute to Scottsdale’s initial growth. Exactly 90 years later, the resort has reinvented both its high-end dining concept – the former BLT Steak, now called Lincoln Restaurant, as well as its signature bar and lounge – renamed Bar 1936 in homage

to its inaugural year – in both a nod to its past and major step into its future. “The Lincoln Restaurant concept – yes, named for the street we’ve called home since our inception – is something our team has been dreaming up for the past two years,” says Paul Rossi, director of food and beverage at the Camelback Inn. “Our initial premise was to share what Arizona cuisine is really about, both for those visiting us from other locales SO SCOTTSDALE! |

and for locals alike.” According to Rossi, Arizona cuisine means clean food, fresh food, locally sourced food and, most importantly, food that isn’t overly manipulated with dozens of ingredients all over the plate. “To accomplish this, we brought in one of Marriott’s top culinary talents, Chris Neff, to serve as our executive chef,” says Rossi, noting that Neff brings experience from some of Marriott’s most iconic properties including the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa as well as The Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons, respectively. Neff’s newly released menu standouts include crispy beef cheek with Bob’s Red Mill Rye Porridge, wild mushrooms and housemade horseradish ($16) and country fried chicken with potato gnocchi, garden vegetables and chicken jus ($29). In addition to the food, the space itself also got an extensive remodel, including upgrading the patio, updating the flooring throughout, adding Southwestern touches like tooled leather and bar doors to the interior and perhaps most importantly, reconfiguring the seating to ensure every guest has a perfect view of Camelback Mountain, which is merely a few steps from the property. “Our new Bar 1936 concept that’s adjacent to the restaurant has similarly spectacular views, not to mention some playful spins on traditional bar and lounge fare, courtesy of Chef Neff,” says Rossi, who recommends the Arizona poutine with crispy potatoes, gravy and Crows Dairy curds ($12) and the Lincoln burger with Arizona cheddar and mouthwatering bourbon bacon jam ($16). Bar 1936 also boasts an impressive happy hour daily from 4 to 7 p.m., including steep discounts on both food and drink. And speaking of drinks, with a seasonally inspired menu of more than a dozen new cocktail creations, like a figinfused Old Fashioned and a barrel-aged 1936 Manhattan, Bar 1936 is out to wow even the most discerning drink lover. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
