H AND SURGEON MICH AEL FITZMAUR ICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board CertiďŹ ed Hand Surgeon

Dr. Fitzmaurice has performed thousands of minimally-invasive, endoscopic hand procedures in Arizona over the last decade.

You never appreciate how important the thumb is to regular activities until a tendon injury compromises movement. Repetitive motion from everyday activities such as typing on a laptop or playing a favorite sport, can lead to swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheath, the condition known as De Quervains Tendinitis. This causes pain and limited mobility of the wrist and thumb.

Developed by board certified hand surgeon Michael Fitzmaurice, M.D., and available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, Endotech uses a small incision and endoscope to repair the injured tendons. Most patients experience immediate relief and improved movement immediately following the procedure, and can return to work in as little as one week!

De Quervains Tendinitis can now be treated by the state of the art, minimally invasive EndoTech Endoscopic De Quervains Release System.

THERE’S HELP—AND HOPE—FOR HAIR LOSS How Carly Klein and National Hair Loss are achieving unprecedented results. Hair is something we tend to take for granted – until it’s gone. Whether our strands are getting sparse due to genetics or hormones, medical conditions such as alopecia, or the effects of medication or chemotherapy, the end result is the same: self-esteem suffers profoundly, and quality of life is compromised. It was Carly Klein’s compassion for people in this situation that led her to establish National Hair Loss in 2010. As the vice president of a prestigious dermatology office, she realized the need for more specialized care – and more emotional support – for hair loss sufferers. There were so many misconceptions and misinformation about hair loss and treatments that people seemed to lose hope. And there was another problem: “I noticed that hair loss facilities were predominantly geared toward men,” says Carly. “I wanted to start a program to help women and cancer patients, too.” In the six years since, National Hair Loss has grown exponentially via word of mouth alone, even garnering a roster of celebrity clientele strong testimonies to its life-changing care. Through careful diagnoses and effective treatments, a multitude of satisfied patients have regained the confidence they thought they¹d lost. From the moment someone walks through the door for a complementary, no-obligation evaluation, it¹s clear just how focused National Hair Loss actually is; not a one-size-fits-all place where patients are handed a bottle of Rogaine and told good luck. Instead, National Hair Loss features a wide range of cutting-edge therapies to address all types of hair loss. One of the most recent is the ability to take hair scans or nail clippings to see the culprit of why the patients are having hair loss. This can give us a full mapping of the patients overall health. Even more in depth than blood tests, we can decipher what each patient needs from a vitamin standpoint and what

families have dealt with cancer. We relate to our patients on a deeper level.” Many exciting developments are happening within the company, including an international expansion (we’ll hear more in an upcoming issue). But one thing never changes: an unwavering commitment to providing successful, innovative care in a supportive environment. “Every day, we get to help patients take control over something they once felt hopeless about,” enthuses Carly. “This is one of the most emotional things someone could go through. I feel privileged that so many have chosen us to be a part of their journey in getting their hair back.” To schedule a no-cost consultation, visit www.nationalhairlossassoc.com

allergens could be aclerating hair loss. Though training and technology is critical, it can’t replace the human element, which Carly says makes the biggest difference of all. Each carefullyselected member of the National Hair Loss team has personal experience with the issues that their clients face, so they’re able to truly understand every aspect. “My team is made up of the most caring group of people I have met,” she says. “Three of my team members have dealt with Alopecia Areata. They changed careers due to being affected by this and wanted to help others.” Those facing cancer have valuable allies in the National Hair Loss team members, too: “We are the first in the country to have a specific cancer division, devoted to helping patients with their hair loss,” says Carly. “Our own

Experts in MonaLisa Touch News Update: The MonaLisa Touch has now been FDA approved in the U.S. for over 2 years and at Arizona Women’s Care more than 800 procedures have brought amazing results to women across the Southwest region. This amazing NON HORMONAL treatment for vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, frequent bladder or vaginal infections and other symptoms that result from a lack of estrogen has revolutionized our success in treating these disheartening issues. In a recent Stanford University study, reductions in dryness and painful intercourse were especially marked, dropping an average of 75% and 66% respectively. As Lindsay (age 56) states, “I was skeptical, but I needed to try something. After the 3 treatments, intercourse was so much better I could not believe it. I actually asked my husband if we could do it again, and he was shocked! It has made such a difference in our relationship.” The MonaLisa Touch uses fractional CO2 laser therapy

to regenerate collagen and rid the vaginal mucosa of the dry atrophic cells. Three simple treatments in the office 6 weeks apart have shown incredible improvements in vaginal atrophy. These treatments take about 5 minutes and are virtually painfree, no anesthesia is needed. As women caring for women, our expertise and customer service are unsurpassed in the valley. Our staff of all-female physicians were the 1st board certified OB/GYNS in the state of Arizona to perform the MonaLisa Touch procedure. We welcome you to any of our open house seminars to learn more about the MonaLisa Touch! You will have the opportunity to meet with the doctors and talk with the patients who have had this life changing procedure. One last testimonial from Rhonda (age 61) sums up why we do what we do, “Thank you Arizona Women’s Care for offering me the MonaLisa Touch! It is an amazing treatment. I am 100% back to feeling like I did 20 years ago!”

n the Valley, the month of May feels a bit like last call at your favorite bar. Sure, we have sweet deals on summer staycations to look forward to, but for the next few months, things around here slow down quite a bit. Which is why we’ve gathered up plenty of ways for you to soak up the season before the heat ensues. It goes without saying that this means parking yourself on plenty of patios (page 71) and perhaps checking off our list of favorite spring things (page 56). On the dining front, we reveal three restaurants worth the drive (page 68), new seasonal menus (page 54), can’t-miss happy hours (page 52), and, of course, places to treat Mom for Mother’s Day brunch (page 70) – plus, creative spins on classic morning-time cocktails (page 108). Speaking of moms, our feature story (page 44) showcases five who are ruling the fashion blogosphere; one of them, Venessa Kaufman of We The Classy, also graces our cover. The women give us a glimpse into their fashionable, familyfocused worlds while sharing everything from blogging wisdom to must-have summer staples. Needless to say, they gave me major style goals, and I hope they do the same for you. And the style doesn’t end there! As you prep for summer, take a look at our spotlights on swimwear (page 92), sandals (page 80) and shorts (page 81). Above all, though, this month I’ll be raising my glass (maybe one from page 84!) to the two women I’ll be sharing Mother’s Day with in Santa Fe: My mom, who has always supported my dreams and the journey they have led me on, and my grandmother, who instilled in me an early love of fashion and is still the most stylish woman I know. Here’s to you both, and an acknowledgement to every mother featured within these pages, to every mother who contributes to So Scottsdale!, and to every mother reading this – thank you.

BRUSHES WITH LIFE

How a debilitating health condition inspired local artist Katie Kral’s work and provided a platform for her to give back BY BRITTANY MARONEY

here is never a blank canvas or a dull moment for Katie Kral. A local artist whose star is on the rise, she describes her work as an artful blend of bold colors and textures with a twist.

up close

An appreciative audience can see the mix of materials in her work – acrylic paint, oil pastels, marker, paper, fabric, upholstery nails, string, and other household items such as envelopes. There is pain, joy, struggle and life in each piece she displays. If personality is said to be transposed on a canvas, Kral’s could be described as captivating. Kral wasn’t raised as an artist, nor did she hear the calling immediately. At four years old, she began by drawing cartoons in the margins of her books and on scraps of paper. It wasn’t until high school that she was inspired to think of her doodles as anything other than an outlet for boredom. A mural artist, Tina Gianatassio-Dia, happened to be doing some work in her mother’s home during Kral’s junior year. Over the next couple of years, GianatassioDia encouraged Kral to pursue a career in the arts and even hired her for her first mural job as a senior in high school. “Her encouragement and confidence in my abilities made me believe I had a shot at it,” says Kral, who is now commissioned to do portraits for celebrities and custom pieces for collectors. “I was struggling in other ways in my life, and I needed something to transport me from the pain.” The same year that Kral found her artistic talents was also the year that she began experiencing excruciating lower abdominal pain. Frequent visits to the doctor came back with varying diagnoses, but she later discovered she had endometriosis, an autoimmune disease where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus is found elsewhere in the body. Kral’s experiences with endometriosis can only be described as often

debilitating. She found that pain was not only a difficult thing to experience but also share with others. Empathy was sometimes in short supply. “If someone doesn’t understand endometriosis or has no desire to, then they simply will not ‘get it’ and the relationship starts to fail,” she says. “In addition to having empathetic people around, I have found that strong anti-nausea meds, strong painkillers, good doctors, eating very lowsugar diets, heating pads, lots of baths, taking care of my health, and acceptance are the ways I deal with the pain.”

The Upside of Pain At 28, Kral made the difficult decision to have a hysterectomy. This meant giving up her dream of biological children but also came with the hope that it would help the pain. Sadly, it did not. What it did do is inspire her work both on the canvas and in the community. “The pain of my disease meant I needed to choose my own schedule,” she says. “I found with painting that I could work during the ‘good’ times and let the

tough times inspire my work. “For some women, their career or relationships run their life. In my case, after God, endometriosis and art run my life, and everything else has to fall into place after that. In a morbid way, I am lucky that the two work well together.” Kral is a passionate advocate of the Endometriosis Association, and a percentage of all proceeds from her paintings go back to the foundation to further research, awareness and support groups. “I am open about my experiences because it is who I am,” she says. “If I don’t talk about it, awareness will not increase, and there may never be a cure. Even if there is no cure in my lifetime, I hope that I can help make an impact in finding a cure for future endometriosis sufferers.” Despite her health struggles, Kral has become an acclaimed artist, growing fast in popularity both locally and nationally. Her work can be found in the gift shop at the Musical Instrument Museum, and she has been contracted for paintings at Google, Pulte and Del Webb. Kral also facilitated the restoration of the 1926 Historic Civic Plaza in Downtown Phoenix and was the featured artist for the 2013 Festival of the West at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Beyond creating custom pieces and exhibiting her artwork, every year Kral hosts shows at a number of charity events where a portion of proceeds are donated. The most recent was held last month at Blue Martini, where she showcased her speed-painting abilities alongside local speed painter Randall Hedden to benefit the local charity notMykid. Tips to volumize fine hair from Rodney Gentry, a full-service designer and hair color specialist at Sachi Studios Winter is a difficult time for those with fine hair, reveals top hair colorist and full-service designer Rodney Gentry. Based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, the color specialist is all too familiar with the misery that fine hair can bring with it. “Flyaway, static, limp, lifeless tresses and easy breakage are just a few of the complaints that clients with fine hair come to me with,” he says. “Many of them are sick and tired of feeling like they can’t do anything with their hair. When I show them how easy it is to achieve strength, brilliant color and outstanding volume, it really does come as something of a shock!” Gentry is referring to the Goldwell Kerasilk Repower range. Fusing engineered keratin, lightweight silk and elastin, the Repower range offers an in-salon and home care treatment specifically designed to tackle fine hair head-on. In the salon, the specialist product line includes a lightweight, volumizing shampoo; an intensive volume treatment; and a volume-intensifying post treatment. Bigger is most definitely better! “It’s the advanced science of the Kerasilk Repower range that works so well,” Gentry says. “Keratransform Technology™ (KT³™) is at the cutting edge of hair care and delivers powerful transformations for fine, flyaway hair.” The top colorist is delighted that the complementary home care products mean that his clients can continue

root to tip, building up its strength and making it easier to style and manage. That means superb color results in the salon, and hair that is easy to style day after day once the client is back at home. It’s the perfect combination.” For the fine-haired men and women in Scottsdale, it’s time to book a trip to the salon and deal with those dull, limp tresses once and for all. Strong, fullbodied hair with outstanding color has never been easier to achieve!

to enjoy fabulously colored, full-bodied tresses long after they leave the salon. The volumizing blow-dry spray is a particular hit – it’s one of those hair care products that, once discovered, becomes an essential part of any woman’s beauty repertoire. The volume-plumping cream is also a must for those looking for a smooth finish with plenty of body. Styling can be a real pain for those with fine hair, but advanced products such as the Kerasilk Repower range mean that long-lasting style and hold are no longer solely the domain of those with thicker locks. “Drooping curls and limp locks are a thing of the past, even in the winter months, which can be so unkind to fine hair,” Gentry says. “With Kerasilk Repower, the hair is nourished from

RECIPES IN HER ROOTS

Hera Ambrosio brings native Italian flavors to Scottsdale BY BRITTANY MARONEY PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

I

n 1993, young Hera Ambrosio was told to say goodbye to her home on the coast of Puglia, Italy, and was swept to the desert of Scottsdale. She often compares it to feeling like she was transported to the moon. “Scottsdale was in the middle of nowhere back then and coming from Italy, it was very bizarre,” Ambrosio says. “I spoke little English and knew no one. Now, as an adult, I thank my parents for risking everything they had to give us a better future.” As the owner of North Scottsdalebased restaurant Casa Mia, Hera spins her father’s original recipes into flavorful, creative new dishes. “Cooking is an art and you’re either born with the talent or you’re not,” Ambrosio says. “It’s not just about following a recipe – anybody can do that. It’s a creative process. Just like a painter or a music composer, the end result is already in your head before you even start preparing it.” Now, as a single mom with a thriving restaurant and a town to once again call home, Hera is loving her exciting and sometimes hectic life. “Arizona is my roots now,” she says. “Sunshine is in my blood, and I love sharing my heritage’s flavors with this amazing city.”

Etc. What is one Italian dish from your homeland that you miss the most? Spaghetti con bottarga, which is spaghetti with garlic, olive oil, crushed red pepper and mullet roe. What restaurant would you recommend besides Casa Mia? Clever Koi! I live so far from that place – maybe it’s a blessing in disguise or maybe it’s misfortune, I’m not sure. If you haven’t been, go. The food is creative and their craft cocktails are marvelous. Any expansion plans? We expanded last year by opening CM2 Pizzeria & Bakeshop with my brother, Nantas. And yes, I absolutely would love to open other creative concepts around the U.S. I have a couple in mind already. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

FOR THE LOVE OF TITO’S Courtney Bennett talks cocktails, canines and the company she calls home BY BRITTANY MARONEY PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE SHOT AT THE PLAZA BAR AT FAIRMONT

O

SCOTTSDALE PRINCESS

riginally from Los Angeles, Courtney Bennett made her way to the desert in 2002 to attend University of Arizona. Unbeknownst to her, the spirits world was about to come calling. “I was working at Cien Agaves Tacos & Tequila as a bartender, and one day I was serving this guy who asked what tequila was my favorite,” Bennett says. “I ended up suggesting his own tequila to him, and I pitched it pretty hard. He was on the hunt for a local brand ambassador, and we later laughed about how my ‘job interview’ was right then and there.” Now an area manager overseeing Arizona and New Mexico for Tito’s Handmade Vodka – which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary – Bennett exudes passion for her industry. In fact, she claims to live by the old adage, “when you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Another thing she loves about her job is the man she works for: Tito Beveridge. “He’s a philanthropist who just happens to make what I consider to be the world’s greatest vodka,” Bennett says. “Giving is the core part of our brand, and it means so much to me that I am able to give and support nonprofit fundraising efforts as part of my job.”

Etc. What is your go-to adult beverage? A Tito’s Greyhound made with fresh grapefruit juice plus basil and a big wedge of grapefruit for garnish. What is one of your favorite charities that you work with? I love our “Vodka for Dog People” campaign. You can buy swag from our website, and all the proceeds go back to local pet charities. Check it out at www.vodkafordogpeople.com. Where is your favorite place to have a cocktail? There are so many great places in the Scottsdale area, and it’s only continuing to grow. I love The Vig McCormick Ranch because they named a cocktail after me and a colleague of mine, Damon Scott of Arizona Cocktail Week. Make sure you try the Bennett & Bubbles! SO SCOTTSDALE! |

s the head of Scottsdale’s Palavela Home Showroom, Philip Johnson has grown to appreciate the elegant details that color his professional world. “I personally found my passion in the industry with fabrics,” he says of his work with interior design. “I love the complexity, variety and history that many textiles are created from.” Johnson’s zeal for sophistication holds true for his personal style, upheld by a simplistic wardrobe that has evolved into something quite timeless. “When you’re dealing with luxury products, it’s important to present yourself in accordance with the products you represent,” he says. For the Los Angeles native, this means preppy-yet-sporty pieces from Club Monaco and Bloomingdale’s and, of course, fabulous shoes. With a career that sends him running all over town, Johnson styles himself from the ground up. His versatile Nike Duckboots pair well with casual buttondown shirts and Mr. Turk jumpsuits, while Cole Haan loafers come in clutch for dressier occasions. On weeknights, after a whirlwind day of client meetings and never-ending e-mails, the self-described music lover can be found honing his skills in the kitchen. “I’m kind of a househusband,” he laughs. “I love cooking, but just like my style, my meals are simple and refined.”

When and where were you happiest? March 13-14, 2015. It was my wedding weekend in Palm Springs, California. We threw the most amazing party for our friends and family. It was perfect! What do you look forward to every summer? Long weekends in California. We tend to take three-day weekends to Los Angeles to escape the heat and relax. It seems to help mitigate the long summer. What inspires you? My inspiration comes mainly from classic trends and style; I love effortless beauty. I also love design and music. I’m pretty sure I would be miserable without music. I don’t know if it has any effect on my style, but it is really important in my life.

COOL AND CULTURED

Local jewelry designer Jetzy Mann shares the secrets behind her fearless style BY EMILY GLYNN PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

J

etzy Mann’s eponymous jewelry line was somewhat of a beautiful accident, sparked by the undiscovered strength the former family support adviser saw in her clients. “Working with families and helping women regain their self-esteem made me realize my passion for helping women find the beauty within themselves,” says the proud mother of two. “The next few years, while I took some time off to raise my own family, I had the opportunity to develop exclusive relationships with jewelry designers from around the world.” The rest is history. Jetzy’s Jewelry was born in 2015, coloring the Valley with a vibrant potpourri of necklaces, bracelets and earrings inspired by indigenous folklore and Mann’s exotic Mexican heritage. Though balancing her mom duties with a blossoming career can be challenging at times, Mann has mastered the art of chic comfort, accessorizing her signature skinny jeans and Mexican embroidered tops with mix-and-match bracelets and exquisite handmade bags from her native country. “It’s easier to add [jewelry] to an outfit instead of changing it a thousand times to come up with that unique look,” she says. “No matter the time of year, a necklace, a ring or bracelet will always make your outfit more attractive.” Who is your role model and why? My husband. He is disciplined, organized, hardworking and professional. Business-wise, my role models are every indigenous woman who handcrafts items inspired by nature and loves creating original, authentic and beautiful things. Where would you most like to live? I love living in Scottsdale. It’s an ideal place to raise a family and enjoy life. But I would love to go back to the beach where I was raised in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. Where can people purchase Jetzy’s Jewelry? Sachi Salon & Spa, terés | a nail bar, and my website: www.jetzysjewerly.com. You can also follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. I’m always posting new arrivals and great deals.

It’s been a decade since the fashion blogging phenomenon began, and today, fashion bloggers are so much more than pretty faces snapping enviable photos. They’re now an accepted part of the fashion world, partnering with major brands, landing ad campaigns, and starring on magazine covers. And, many of them happen to have another role: Mom. From babies to Balenciaga, five local women are balancing motherhood with the life of a fashion blogger. Whether it’s shopping on a budget, ultra-feminine finds or boho influences, each style maven lends savvy inspiration to her fashionable fan base.

Kimberly Blank

OF LIVE LOVE BLANK

With a background in retail buying and interior design, fashion blogging was a natural fit for Kimberly Blank. As a newer blogger, hitting the blogosphere less than a year ago, and a very new mom – her daughters are 22 months and just over a month old – Blank has transferred her passion and stylish know-how to her blog, Live Love Blank. It’s through blogging that Blank has found a way to share her creativity and expertise in the worlds of fashion, design, beauty and motherhood, with a goal of inspiring other moms. The fashionista’s saving grace? Online shopping, where she says she gets almost all of her goodies, including the Marc Fisher wedges, big sunnies and floral dresses she says are summer must-haves.

What inspires you and your day-today fashion? I love clothing that fits well, makes me feel my best, and energizes me for the day. It’s amazing how a well puttogether look can uplift and motivate you. When did your love of fashion begin? By first grade, I was obsessed with Punky Brewster, and I, too, had to wear jelly bracelets covering my arms and a necklace loaded with charms. I’m still accessory obsessed! I think it’s just something you are born with. How has becoming a mother changed your wardrobe? Gone is the complicated clothing, meaning anything that requires you to watch what you eat or fashion tape. Fashion will always be extremely important to me, but now I also have to be comfortable running around with my babies or scooping them up, and not worrying about my clothing shifting. However, I will forever love getting dressed up, and my favorite thing to wear will always be a dress.

“IF YOU HAVE A PASSION OR TALENT AND LOVE TO SHARE AND ENGAGE WITH OTHERS, JUST START. IT’S LIKE ANYTHING – MAKE IT A PRIORITY, PUT IN THE TIME AND EFFORT, TREAT YOUR BLOG AS A BUSINESS, AND YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU SET YOUR MIND TO.”

What do you think the key has been to having a successful blog and social media following? Authenticity, transparency and being inspirational. It’s so important to be your authentic self, and to share, discuss and promote things that you actually love, wear and stand behind. If you blog about what you are most passionate about, people will feel your energy, appreciate the authenticity, and look to you for your honesty and expertise. You must also be willing to be an open book and share a large portion of your life. How do you do it all – blogging and being a mom? I’ve always had a strong work ethic and take great pride in being able to tackle a lot in a day. That same mentality carries over into motherhood and blogging. I don’t take naps, I work when my babies are asleep, and my power hours are that 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. sweet zone.

Jenny Donnell

OF THE SENSIBLE SHOPAHOLIC

2015 was a big year for Jenny Donnell. She gave birth to her second child (she already had a two-year-old at home), quit her office job at a Big Four accounting firm, and (even though she didn’t know it yet) started a new career as a blogger. What initially began as a baby blog – intended to keep her family across the country up to date on her newborn son’s milestones – opened Donnell’s eyes to the world of blogging. Soon after, with her own sensible shopper mom as inspiration, Donnell launched The Sensible Shopaholic. The self-proclaimed “full-time, stay-at-home mom and part-time blogger” focuses on fashion, lifestyle and beauty, using her online platform to express her creativity, share her favorite shopping finds with the world, and connect with others.

What inspires you and your day-today fashion? I’m always looking for versatile pieces that can easily be dressed up or down. I’ve always been a bit of a shopaholic, but even my husband agrees I spend my money wisely. I like to splurge on classic pieces that will last and spend less on trendy pieces that will be out of style next year. What advice would you offer someone who wants to blog professionally? Start with a free Wordpress account (it’s easy to upgrade when you get bigger) and build a social media following. Especially as a fashion blogger, having a presence on Instagram has been essential. Top three summer must-haves: Offthe-shoulder or cold-shoulder tops and dresses, anything with tassels or pompoms, and an amazing pair of comfortable sandals or wedges. How has becoming a mother changed your wardrobe? I now gravitate toward comfortable and easy-to-wash items that work with my day-to-day lifestyle. Instead of spending my weekends at trendy hot spots with friends, I now spend my time at the park, birthday parties and doing other family events. Heels and fancy dresses rarely happen these days. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve been given? Traveling with kids is possible. My husband and I love to travel and have taken our kids to five continents before the age of five. Yes, there are difficult moments, but it is possible to continue exploring the world, even with kids in tow. Top three fashion influences: 1) My mom. She’s always had amazing style and has taught me to shop sensibly, hence the name of my blog. 2) Tory Burch. I love her brand, story and entrepreneurial spirit. 3) Other fashion bloggers. These are real people who have a good eye and love fashion as much as I do.

“FOR ME, BEING A MOM IS NO. 1. I FOCUS FIRST ON MY KIDS AND TRY TO DO MOST OF MY BLOGGING DURING NAP TIME AND IN THE EVENINGS. HOWEVER, I’M TOTALLY GUILTY OF HAVING MY FOURYEAR-OLD TAKE THE OCCASIONAL BLOG PHOTO FOR ME, SO MY KIDS DO HELP ME OUT FROM TIME TO TIME!”

Venessa Kaufman

OF WE THE CLASSY

More than two years ago, Venessa Kaufman traded in her 10-year career as a financial advisor to lend a full-time focus on her blog and her kiddos (Zara, 5 ½ and Blake, 4). What began as a hobby and creative outlet for Kaufman, is now a mecca full of style and design inspo where she shares her self-described “ultra-modernboho” look. Kaufman, who says her love of fashion bloomed during high school when she produced two fashion shows, calls her growing blog honest, fun and visually appealing, and, for her, it serves as a source of self-expression and connection to people all over the world. Evidence of her fashion influences – the 70s, Kate Moss and Saint Laurent – are apparent, as is her love for wearable whites and resort-inspired ensembles.

What advice would you offer someone who wants to blog professionally? Take one small step at a time. Don’t overwhelm yourself with being an overnight sensation. Take yourself seriously; it sets boundaries and shows people how you expect to be treated. We all have something to offer, in blogging especially. Where do you love to shop? I’m a big www.revolve.com and www.shopbop.com fan. Online shopping is a godsend for mommies like me. How has becoming a mother changed your wardrobe? I don’t wear heels as much, and I don’t take as long to get ready. But overall, I try to stay true to the looks that make me feel good. We are better mamas if we’re happy with ourselves.

TOP THREE SUMMER MUST-HAVES:

Where do you see yourself and your blog in five years? Ultimately, I would love to hire a few bloggers who embody strong values and a unique fashion sense. I see We The Classy as a brand more than just me. Another goal is to design a line under We The Classy. That may take more than five years, but it’s an idea that excites me.

The wide belt – the more fun the buckle, the better A simple, fitted bodysuit

What has been the key to having a successful blog and social media following? What you give is what you receive. Being truthful in who you are is important because people connect to you on a real level. The other part is remembering social media is very similar to being at a social gathering. Remember kindness and manners. If you want to make connections with people, ask them questions. Really, we can’t forget the rules of humanity just because we are using a keyboard to talk.

An off-the-shoulder dress in white, yellow or green Bonus item: wide-leg pants

How do you do it all – blogging and being a mom? I strive for balance, meaning I set realistic expectations for myself. I wish I had a magic trick for it, but everyone is different, so the best advice I have is don’t do what’s good for me and my family, do what’s good for you and your family.

Stesha Puckett

OF CLASSIC & BUBBLY

During childhood, Stesha Puckett recalls dressing herself in a rainbow of mix-matched everything. Though now her style is thoughtfully curated, her knack for creativity still rings true. So much so that early in her career, Puckett transitioned from a corporate sales job and MBA program to focus on Classic & Bubbly, which began as a blog to help launch her photography career. That was five years ago. Today, the mom of seven-year-old Sofia is not only pursuing life behind the lens, she’s also sharing her feminine style with an eager audience. In fact, it’s fun, feminine pieces that inspire her most as well as colors and textures. In addition to her outfits – which she notes take influence from fashion icons Lauren Conrad and Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw – you’ll also find beauty and travel in the Classic & Bubbly mix.

What do you love about blogging? One thing I love about blogging that I had no idea existed is the large community of bloggers who support one another! I love meeting other ladies who understand what it is like to be a blogger and can relate to some of the struggles a blogger can go through. What advice would you offer someone who wants to blog professionally? I would say to be authentic, be patient, and stay true to yourself. Also, you need to be dedicated – blogging takes a lot of time! When did your love of fashion begin? My love for fashion stated at a young age! I would dress myself in all different colors, patterns, multicolored hair ties, mix-andmatch socks, etc. It was a unique style, and now, as an adult, I ask my mom how she let me out of the house like that!

“I THINK PEOPLE WHO FOLLOW YOU OR READ YOUR BLOG WANT TO GET TO KNOW THE REAL YOU. I STRUGGLED WITH THIS WHEN I FIRST STARTED BLOGGING. I THOUGHT I NEEDED TO BE SOMETHING I WASN’T TO CAPTURE PEOPLE’S ATTENTION, WHEN IN REALITY, WHEN I AM MYSELF I HAVE MUCH MORE ENGAGEMENT!”

Where do you love to shop? I love Nordstrom – their Lush, Socialite, BP. and Free People brands are my favorite. I also love ASOS, Target, Loft, H&M and SheIn. Where do you see yourself and your blog in five years? I hope to still be a fashionable mom who inspires other moms. As our family grows, I know there will be different challenges presented so I may involve my children and family more on the blog. I love choosing my daughter’s clothes (hers are so much cuter!), so it may be fun to add a child’s section! How do you do it all – blogging and being a mom? Early mornings and late nights! I tend to always multitask. For example, while waiting in the parent pickup line for the bell to ring, I am engaging on Instagram or answering emails. I also love to involve my family in my work when it is acceptable. We will make a night out for dinner but go somewhere fun and take a few photos, or take a work trip and turn it into a family vacation.

Rachel White

OF WITH LOVE & STYLE

Although a blogger for only one year, Rachel White was born an influencer. As a teenager, White spent her babysitting money on clothes and Vogue. Her passion led to designing and sewing her own clothes and an internship in an apparel showroom. Although she followed a different career path, White couldn’t stay away from her first love. The full-time marketing consultant combined her professional background with her fashionable sensibilities to create With Love & Style, a destination for feminine-chic fashion, beauty and lifestyle inspiration. The mom to three-year-old William channels her inner style icons (Audrey Hepburn, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis) to create looks that focus on comfort and versatility using a mixture of affordable pieces and must-have investment items.

What do you love about blogging? Blogging allows me to combine my love for fashion, styling, writing, photography and social media into one creative outlet. Being able to write about and share what inspires me with others is very fulfilling. What inspires you and your day-today fashion? I gather inspiration from nature, art, fashion magazines and, of course, Instagram. My day-to-day fashion choices are inspired by a mixture of current trends and classic staple wardrobe pieces. What advice would you offer someone who wants to blog professionally? Follow your dreams and go for it! Just know that it’s a labor of love, so ensure that you are truly passionate about your blog topic, otherwise you will burn out quickly. How has becoming a mother changed your wardrobe? I spend a lot of time chasing after a toddler, so I tend to wear things that are comfortable. I do wear a lot less white and save my off-the-shoulder tops for date night. However, I think it’s important to wear the clothes that you buy and not save them for a special occasion. It’s better to wear them and ruin them than to never wear them at all! What’s the best parenting advice you’ve been given? “Prepare the child for the path, not the path for the child.” My husband and I simply hope to teach our son self-confidence, good values and to fearlessly pursue his dreams. We want him to be prepared to stand up for himself, his beliefs and become whoever he wants to be. He will know that Mom and Dad will be there to support him, no matter what. How do you do it all – blogging and being a mom? Late nights and a lot of coffee! I also couldn’t do it without my wonderful husband and mom, who have been incredibly supportive. Receiving positive feedback from my lovely followers is very motivating.

EXPERIENCE

COUNTS!

Looking great may be easier than you think. “I’d really love to do something to improve my face and figure, but I”m afraid of the pain, the post operative nausea and of course the cost. Isn’t there a way that I can enhance my appearance without all the hassles of a major production?” The answer is a resounding YES! Dr Andrew Wolin has found a great way to maximize the safety of facial, breast and body procedures while minimizing the pain and the cost. By utilizing an enhanced form of local anesthesia as well as sedation by

specialists in ambulatory anesthesia, procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lifts, facelifts, rhinoplasties and liposuction can be done under a quick enhanced form of anesthesia and patients are be able to walk to their cars and go home after the procedure without nausea and pain. Part of the miraculous process is the use of a long acting local anesthetic at the conclusion of the procedure to give a 48 hour period of pain relief…no narcotic…no nausea. Patients have been raving about the experience and can’t believe they’ve ever had surgery any other way. “Dr Wolin told me that I could undergo a breast augmentation in less than one hour without general anesthetic and then get off the operating room table and walk to my car. When it actually happened, I was amazed. What a great experience.” (verified testimonial) Call our office and see if you are a candidate for this revolutionary approach to Plastic Surgical procedures. It’s as easy as going to your dentist and having dental implants done…maybe easier.

A Bit Bookish

On View

Book lovers, rejoice! Now you can get library books while taking a trip to your local park. Last month, Scottsdale’s first microlibrary – which, fittingly given the park’s dog-friendly vibe, looks like a doghouse – opened at Chaparral Park. Scottsdale Public Library will continue to create these “Books2Go” locations at other city parks, and each structure will be filled with books donated by the community, meaning no checkout or return will be required. The microlibraries will instead rely on borrowing and returning books on the honor system. www.scottsdalelibrary.org.

This isn’t your ordinary birding excursion. On May 11 from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Scottsdale Public Art will host an opening reception celebrating Bird Cloud Island, a family-friendly summer exhibition at the Gallery @ The Library. At the reception, artist Koryn Woodward Wasson will give an exclusive tour of this interactive exhibit, described as a “bird hotel,” which will run through Aug. 31. Throughout the summer, there will be art-making and educational workshops, including May 22 from 10 to 11 a.m., which will entail birdhouse building. www.scottsdalepublicart.org.

There’s no doubt that Yelp reviews drive many peoples’ choices, so it’s quite an acknowledgement to be ranked as one of the top 25 breweries in the nation based on those reviews. And one of our own made the list – Scottsdale’s Goldwater Brewing Co. clocked in at No. 11. We’ll drink to that! www.goldwaterbrewing.com.

“With the pageantry and tradition, there’s nothing like the Kentucky Derby,” says Jason Rose, founder of the Stella Artois Derby DayClub. “Here in Arizona, the historic Turf Paradise and Stella Artois Derby DayClub is the perfect setting to sip a mint julep, place your bet, and take in the longest continually held sporting event in America.” It’s also the only Kentucky Derby party in Arizona with live racing and betting. According to Rose, in addition to being able to bet on the big race (and those leading up to it), guests are also able to bet on a series of live horseraces taking place at Turf Paradise throughout the day. There are also a host of new elements added this year, including: • The Hefeweizen Beer Garden, presented by Hensley Beverage Company, featuring wheat and craft beers. • Additional betting terminals and giant flat screen TVs throughout. • The Sanderson Lincoln Black Label VIP Lounge, a shaded, air-cooled tent track-side with a complimentary buffet and cocktails for all guests. All tables will include a complimentary bottle of Chandon Champagne as well. The event encourages all guests to dress the part, with their best pastels, bow ties and audacious headwear – the bolder the better. “The Derby itself is the first race within the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, where it is followed by the Preakness Stakes race and the Belmont Stakes race,” Rose says. “Twenty horses compete in the Kentucky Derby, a larger field size than most horse races, which typically feature eight competitors.” The 20 horses racing in the Kentucky Derby must first travel along the Road to the Kentucky Derby, a series of 35 races taking place at tracks across the country and the world. “But to enjoy it, you just need to trek to Turf Paradise in your Derby best!” Rose says.

DESTINATION DINING

Kai Kai, the Pima word for “seed,” has great relevance to the people of the Gila River Indian Community, including their reverence for nature and the belief that the land provides them with everything they need. Located at the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass on the Gila River Indian reservation, Kai has become one of Arizona’s most celebrated dining experiences. Kai is the only AAA Five Diamond, Forbes Five Star dining experience in the state, and it has made history as the first Sheraton- and Native American-owned property to receive this exclusive combination of awards in the world. At the helm of Kai, Chef de Cuisine Ryan Swanson incorporates the essence of the Pima and Maricopa tribes into his menu, while drawing many foraged elements from the surrounding community. Kai’s menu features ingredients from local partners, such as Gila River Farms, and items from Native Seed/SEARCH, which is a foundation that preserves ancient Native American seed lines that would otherwise be extinct. www.wildhorsepass.com.

Quiessence Quiessence, located at Phoenix’s Farm at South Mountain, is an award-winning farmto-table restaurant nestled at the end of a 10-acre pecan grove. Known for its seasonally and locally inspired menu, Quiessence uses fresh produce, herbs, edible flowers and fruit picked from the property each day in the ever-changing menu. If not grown on site, Chef Dustin Christofolo sources from other local farm and purveyor partners. Customers can walk through the culinary gardens before taking a seat on the patio or inside the original farmhouse that is now the Quiessence restaurant. If you’d like an exclusive garden table, the Brick Oven Experience is available for one reservation per evening. This table lends a romantic vibe with a lit fire in the brick oven, and guests experience a chef’s tasting dinner with eight courses. Each week, the menu is rewritten depending on the season and availability of the local ingredients. www.qatthefarm.com. Litchfield’s Named after Paul W. Litchfield, then Goodyear Tire & Rubber executive and founder of Litchfield Park, the West Valley’s top-ranked restaurant pays tribute to the local community, supporting it with a menu crafted from farmto-table and locally sourced produce. A blend of old school (the restaurant is located at the nearly 100-year-old Wigwam Resort, after all) and new (especially since Arizona icon Jerry Colangelo took the helm in recent years), guests can enjoy anything from a nostalgic cocktail on the patio to a communal, interactive meal at Chef de Cuisine Jason Paterno’s chef’s table – where he even uses a fireplace to cook a treat or two. www.wigwamarizona.com.

out Dreamweavers Canyon Both guests and locals can enjoy Dreamweavers Canyon, set in the spacious courtyard of The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa and complete with cozy outdoor couches and chairs; fire pits; and a gorgeous, everchanging seasonal flowerbed centerpiece patterned after a Navajo blanket. An added bonus: Each night at sunset, master bagpiper Michael McClanathan visits Dreamweavers to entertain guests with a series of bagpiping songs in tribute to the oft-overshadowed contributions made by Scottish immigrants to the state’s railroads, mines and towns. www.kierlandresort.com. El Chorro Situated at the base of Camelback Mountain, El Chorro is among the most beloved patios in Arizona. Its legacy is just as impressive as its view. Originally built as a school for girls in 1934, the property was later reimagined into a restaurant and lodge. In its early days, Clark Gable, Milton Berle and other prominent figures visited the lodge. Today, it’s become a local favorite and evolved into a place that retains its original rustic charm, with expansive indoor-outdoor dining spaces that offer brunch, dinner and a generous happy hour – along with incredible views. www.elchorro.com.

Isabella’s Kitchen Technically part of the public Grayhawk Golf Club, this hot spot is for far more than a golfer’s retreat. The patio of the upscale, rustic Italian eatery and bar overlooks the perfectly manicured 18th hole and offers dramatic views of Camelback and Mummy mountains in the distance. The outdoor terrace, patio and multiple semi-private courtyards have seating for more than 100 people and even offer rocking chairs so you can cozy on up to watch the sunset in absolute comfort. www.isabellaskitchen.com. Olive & Ivy Tucked along the Scottsdale Waterfront among shaded trees and in sight of the canal, Olive & Ivy’s massive patio feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of Old Town Scottsdale. The menu similarly reflects the laidback Mediterranean vibe, offering plenty of wine options and shareable small plates with thoughtful touches. At nightfall, the thousands of lights strung between the trees make the patio as romantic as it is lush. www.foxrc.com. The Plaza Bar Designed as an indoor/outdoor living room lounge at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, The Plaza Bar focuses on craft cocktails with flavorful infusions, syrups and powders combined in a variety of scrumptious ways. The Plaza Bar is hard to miss, thanks to its dramatic architecture and prime position in the center of the property – not to mention the stark white fire pits that line the bar and come alive at night. A selection of fine cigars; music; and large, high-definition TVs make it the perfect spot to wind down after work, catch the game or sip cocktails beneath the stars. www.scottsdaleprincess.com.

A MULTIFACETED ARTIST A glimpse into the creative process of Amy Whitehouse’s colorful works BY OFELIA MONTELONGO PHOTO BY JAMES PATRICK

T

o call Amy Whitehouse an oil and acrylic painter is an understatement. The Florida native’s artistic talent stretches far beyond a colorful canvas; she also expresses herself through nonfiction writing, mixed media, and teaches painting and piano. Whitehouse’s love for art began at an early age – she remembers selling drawings to her neighbors for a nickel – but it wasn’t until 20 years ago that she became a full-time artist. Whitehouse began painting when she was 12, and continued to dabble in it while studying art history in college. Whitehouse then completed a master’s in family counseling and took a break from art while raising her four children. About 20 years ago, Whitehouse decided to start painting again, and she hasn’t stopped since. Whitehouse received most of her education at Scottsdale Artists’ School and also took some classes in France. She says her artwork has been influenced by post-impressionist artists Vincent van Gogh and Odilon Redon, and that her paintings are inspired by different elements, including flowers, musical instruments, pets, landscapes and beaches. Whitehouse loves to experiment with traditional methods and contemporary styles and break the “rules.” “You’re never supposed to paint acrylic over oil, but I like to do things like that just to see what happens,” says Whitehouse, who enjoys creating cheerful art with bright

and serene colors, striving for unique textures with her experimentations. Over the years, her art has transitioned into the realm of abstract and photographic. “I started out very realistic,” she says. “Now, my goal is to hit something between a realistic representation and abstract.” Among other objectives, Whitehouse seeks to make art that causes people to pause and think. “I like to make it interesting,” she says. “I want the viewer to be able to participate in the painting, to look at my art and feel better.” Her home studio is filled with multiple finished pieces and some in-progress work, including abstract monoprints, a painting of her recent trip to Mexico, and an experimental piece of artwork for her church. She states that she doesn’t SO SCOTTSDALE! |

always know what she is going to paint. “Sometimes I just take a brush, add some paint, start making big shapes, and then decide,” she explains, recalling a fresh oil painting of a bright flower. Among other projects, she is involved in church fundraising, and she frequently challenges herself to complete 60 paintings in 60 days, with 60 percent of profits going to medical donations. Whitehouse’s work for sale can be found at Village Coffee Roastery in Scottsdale, online at www.amywhitehousepaintings.com, and at her home studio. Whitehouse also accepts commissions and she has been commissioned to create large paintings all over the world. She has also been awarded the People’s Choice Award at the Best and the Brightest Juried Fine Art Show and Sale of Scottsdale Artists’ School.

cuisine

Chef Roberto Madrid joined SumoMaya Mexican-Asian Kitchen as executive chef just a few short months ago, but he is already putting his signature spin on the restaurant’s globe-straddling, fusionfocused menu to rave reviews. YOUR CULINARY CAREER BEGAN RIGHT HERE IN SCOTTSDALE? I got my start in 1982, studying under Tony Fogo at The White Truffle, a then-popular French fine dining restaurant. I eventually moved on to Jean Carlo to master Italian cuisine – still one of my passions – and then spent years with Michael Salvagio at Steven’s, a local haunt here co-owned by the late, great Harry Caray, where we helped build the foundation of modern Southwestern cuisine. YOUR STORIED SCOTTSDALE PAST DOES NOT END THERE, HOWEVER, DOES IT? Not by a longshot. Many locals also know me as part of the team that opened the first restaurant concept, The Terrace, at The Phoenician in the late 1980s. I also had the chance to eventually head up the Golden Swan at Hyatt Regency Scottsdale at Gainey Ranch in the early 1990s, where we gained national fame for our brunch. Most recently, people recognize me from The Westin Kierland’s deseo, where I spent 12 years.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Roberto Madrid of SumoMaya

WHAT IS IT THAT BROUGHT YOU TO SUMOMAYA? Fusion is fun! I was ready for a new challenge, and the idea of experimenting with food in ways I never had before was invigorating.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF YOUR FIRST MENU INNOVATIONS? Our new bottomless brunch – including cocktails – for just $39 per person every Saturday and Sunday, which offers three rounds of seemingly endless options including sweet Mexican pastries, sushi rolls hand-selected by me, waygu steak and eggs, kimchee and egg fried rice with Korean chili aioli, and liquid cheesecake brulee. WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE UP YOUR SLEEVE? My goal is to use my experience to empower our team to innovate new concepts and culinary creations. For example, we have an amazing Peruvian team member well-versed in ceviche. As a result, he and I are already looking at how to expand our ceviche program, bringing in some of his native flavors and ingredients. SumoMaya Mexican-Asian Kitchen, 6560 N. A FLORAL FUSION Gertrude’s Lavender Lemon Drop BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

N

estled within the Desert Botanical Garden in a greenhouse reimagined into a restaurant is Gertrude’s, which utilizes herbs grown on its patio garden in nearly all of its recipes and captivating cocktails. The Lavender Lemon Drop ($12) is no exception, clearly reflecting the beauty and flavors of the Sonoran Desert while complementing the restaurant’s fantastic fare. “For the lemon drop, we chose Arizona Distilling Company’s Mission Vodka as the base, which is made from 100 percent corn and has a clean, crisp flavor and pop of sweetness,” says Gertrude’s mixologist Roberto Velasquez. The vodka is paired with Giffard Crème de Violette liqueur, created from the infusion of violet flowers and a distillation of violet leaves. “It’s not only very aromatic with a slight sweetness, but it also gives the drink a hint of color without adding artificial ingredients.” Velasquez then makes a tea from dehydrated lavender and sugar, reducing it into a lavender simple syrup. The ingredients are combined in a shaker with ice and fresh lemon juice, which provides the cocktail’s signature tartness, and strained into a martini glass rimmed with housemade sugar. “My grandma always carried around these purple hard candies. I used them – mixed with real sugar – to create our rimming,” says Velasquez, who finishes the drink with freshly picked flowers from the patio garden, often choosing violets. Gertrude’s, 1201 N. CORRECTING YOUR RECEDING GUM LINE WILL RESTORE YOUR BEAUTIFUL SMILE!

Pinhole Surgical Technique® The painless fix for receding gums... in about an hour! A University Study revealed that 89% of patients over 20 years old have gingival recession. If you are concerned about receding gums due to gum disease or have gum recession because of aggressive brushing, smoking or medications, turn to Dr. Erik Svans for the Pinhole Surgical Technique®. This surgical treatment rebuilds the gum line without cut and suture surgery. You can walk out of our office with a beautiful new smile in a single visit! In fact, the Pinhole Surgical Technique® is often called the “Lunchtime Gum Lift” as it takes as little as an hour to perform and is done under local anesthesia so you can return to work after your appointment.

BEFORE

AFTER

Here’s what you need to know: • If the recession is less than 2mm, typically your dentist should closely monitor the tooth. BUT if the tooth is sensitive, un-esthetic, or the root structure is starting to wear away we can quickly and painlessly reposition the receded gum tissue to re-cover the exposed root surface with Pinhole Surgical Technique®. • If the recession is 2mm or more, the supporting bone for the tooth is already resorbing away, and corrective measures should be taken as soon as possible. Continued bone loss can lead to eventual tooth loss. Keeping “small problems small” is a philosophy of ours to maintain optimal overall health of your mouth and body. • Once bone loss occurs, it is impossible to re-grow, and as the gingival tissue recedes, both the supporting hard (bone) and soft (gingival) tissues are being lost that are vital to your Periodontal Health. Pinhole Surgical Technique® is a simple, quick, and effective treatment option for solving gingival recession problems. Dr Svans has been treating gingival recession using Pinhole Surgical Technique® since 2014 and has appeared on Channels 3 and 15 as an expert guest for Pinhole Surgical Technique®. He has treated over 1,000 teeth with this procedure, and is highly experienced in both the procedure, its outcome, and helping you maintain optimal gingival health by controlling the factors that lead to Gingival Recession in the first place.

Savor exquisite luxury on the Mediterranean BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

M

onaco is a postcard-sized country poised on the Mediterranean coast. As a luxurious retreat surrounded by the French Alps, France and Italy, it’s known for royalty, fast cars, expensive yachts, fine dining, high-end shopping and breathtaking settings.

Discover Monaco Americans usually know Monaco for Princess Grace, the Monte Carlo Casino and the Grand Prix. All of that and so much more is waiting to discover. The tiny municipality is walkable – it takes about 45 minutes to stroll from one end to the other – or you can hop in a taxi. Monaco is tiny but diverse; although home to only 32,000 permanent residents, the population represents more than 120 countries. As you wander through the shops and streets, you will hear many different languages spoken. Though French is the official language, English and Italian are prevalent almost everywhere.

The Grand Prix de Monaco One of the most popular events is the Grand Prix de Monaco, held each May throughout the streets. Visitors watch from bleachers along the streets, hotel terraces, yachts and other vantage points throughout town. You can get a great view from Nikki Beach at the Fairmont Monte Carlo, where you can watch the cars go through the curves and in and out of the tunnels.

Exploring Monaco Monaco is quite a blend of Old World and modern influences. No trip is complete without visiting the casino, built in SO SCOTTSDALE! |

the late 1800s in the grand Belle Époque style of Paris. Entering the lobby is free, but pay 10 euros to enter the Salon Europe, which opens at 2 p.m. daily. Even if you aren’t a casino fan, this is a magnificent experience – and doesn’t everyone expect James Bond to swagger past? As you walk through Monte Carlo, past shops holding Bentleys, Maseratis and Lamborghinis next to Chanel, Christian Louboutin and Dior, the glitz and glamour surrounds you. Be sure to explore the shops at La Métropole Shopping Center, which consist of three levels under the Métropole Hotel, and

then make your way past the casino to the most exclusive shopping area: Monte-Carlo Pavilions. These futuristic-shaped buildings house the world’s most luxurious brands. Plan to spend one day at Monaco-ville (also known as The Rock), which is the old, walled city. Accessible by a cobbled path, the climb up is quite steep, but it’s worth the walk. After absorbing the breathtaking views of the harbor, tour the Prince’s Palace. Open April through October, it is the official residence of Prince Albert II, Monaco’s royal leader and son of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier. Guided audio tours take place every 30 minutes, detailing the history of Monaco and the Grimaldi family, forever tied to the U.S. after Hollywood star Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier in 1956. Peruse the winding old town streets, boutiques, sidewalk cafes, and the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. Monaco is also dotted with gardens, so as you explore, be sure to uncover the bounties of flora and fauna. MAY 2017 |

Food and hotels are plentiful in Monaco, and dining is only a challenge because you can’t eat at every restaurant. A can’t-miss experience is Joël Robuchon at Hotel Métropole, a Michelin two-star restaurant. Book a seat at the chef’s table overlooking the kitchen and order the langoustine in truffled raviolis. The seafood is always fresh wherever you go, and if it’s spring, be sure to order the asparagus. Because there are so many different international visitors, you can find a variety of foods. Stop by Song Qi for lunch or dinner to sample some of the best Asian food outside of Asia. The dim sum lunch (with a glass of wine) is perfection. For a dinner to remember, head to Cipriani Monte Carlo. It features classic Italian flavors and feels as though you are stepping onto a yacht. This is the place to see and be seen, but it also embodies simple, great food with amazing service. With so much homemade pasta, it’s hard not to overeat, but save room for dessert – and a limoncello, of course.

Luxe Lodging Hotels vary from high-end to small boutique properties. For a luxury stay in the center of the city, you will feel wrapped in opulence and history at the Hotel Métropole Monte-Carlo, which dates back to 1886. Truly, it is a most exquisite stay in the heart of Monaco. The Fairmont Monte Carlo is a modern beachfront option, where every room offers unparalleled Mediterranean views, and evenings with Champagne on the Horizon Deck are unforgettable. Grand Prix fans will enjoy Columbus Monte-Carlo, a small boutique property in Fontvieille previously owned by race car driver David Coulthard. Many of the teams still stay at the hotel, and the chic, urban feel of the space is much different from the other two options. Monaco is a bit of a fantasy, but while watching the sunset over the Mediterranean, you may perhaps realize that fairy tales really can come true. Find out more at www.visitmonaco.com.

2017 Land Rover Discovery Price: $49,900 Price as tested: $74,380 Seating: 7 Engine: 3.0-liter V-6 or 3.0-liter turbodiesel

A thrilling new off-road SUV

resh off a complete redesign, the boxy Land Rover LR4 also has a new name: Land Rover Discovery. This fifth-generation model sports a new look and features a slew of technological advancements, including a lightweight body construction, making the Discovery about 20 percent lighter than the outgoing LR4. Gone is the boxy look in favor of a more rounded, aerodynamic flowing design. But a few historical lineage cues remain, like the offset rear license plate and the signature, stepped roof that’s now a mere ripple. Inside, the Discovery reflects the look, feel and quality of Range Rover SO SCOTTSDALE! |

models, giving it a much stronger sense of luxury than before. Elegant touches of supple hand-stitched leather, brushed metals and natural charcoal oak veneer enhance the upscale feel. There are four available trim levels: the base SE, HSE, HSE Luxury (tested here) and First Edition. The Discovery has seating for seven adults in three rows of heated seats, with the new model introducing the world’s first Intelligent Seat Folding technology. Seats can be configured remotely from anywhere in the world, using a smartphone-enabled InControl Remote application. Also new is the 258-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel engine. It’s a superbly smooth, quiet powerplant from which 443 pound-feet of off-road, nearvertical, boulder-climbing torque emanates. A supercharged 340-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 engine is standard. Both engines are matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission. To test the claim that Discovery is the most capable off-road vehicle ever from Land Rover, I drove more than 300 miles in rugged dry river beds and muddy undulating trails in the deep powder sand of Utah’s Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park – and even icy road conditions near the north entrance of Grand Canyon National Park. Not surprisingly, the Discovery was unstoppable in all conditions. It can also ford water up to 35.4 inches deep. The Terrain Response system offers five settings, and an auto mode removes the guesswork by giving the vehicle more than 1,000 bits of road condition information per second, allowing the computer to select the best mode. While most owners will likely never take the Discovery through these extreme conditions, I think they should. With all of its built-in capabilities, comfort and safety features, the SUV allows drivers to explore a lot of places most people will never see.

Chef Brian Archibald delivers “spring on a plate” with this Alaskan Halibut ($40), available at Palo Verde at the Boulders Resort & Spa. Sourced fresh from organic Alaskan fisherman, the halibut is lightly seared with olive oil, smashed garlic and whole butter, resulting in a tender, flaky fish. Archibald then works with every part of an English pea – also in season – to create a pea puree, pea spaetzle and pea butter. The dish is topped with more peas and pancetta that’s cured with spices in-house and hung for two months before cooking. GOT IT FROM THEIR MAMAS Local chefs share menu items made with Mom in mind BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

T

hough some serve comfort food and others fusion, most of the Valley’s chefs share one very special thing in common – Mom (or Grandma). In fact, many have such a deep connection to the women in their lives that they offer culinary creations directly inspired by them. Dive right into six chefs’ favorite dishes that are reminiscent of their childhoods, homelands and, most of all, their families.

food files Pomo Chef: Stefano Fabbri Mom: Marisa Fabbri Dish: Campanelle verdure, $15.95 About: Handmade campanelle pasta tossed with freshly made pesto and sauteed zucchini, mushrooms, broccolini, eggplant and grape tomatoes, topped with grated Parmigiano-Reggiano for a healthful, flavorful vegetarian dish. Info: 8977 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.998.1366; www.pomopizzeria.com. “As with most children, getting me to eat my vegetables was a frequent challenge for my mother – and she found pasta was the way to do it. This is an homage to her cleverness, and the pesto recipe is hers. It’s fresh, peppery and aromatic but doesn’t overpower the other flavors of the dish. The vegetables in her campanelle would change depending on the season, but I use my personal favorites year-round.”

Kitchen West at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch

Chef: Samantha Sanz Mom: Olga Bojorquez Dish: Pan-seared salmon with a calabacitas tart and salsa trocadero, $40 About: Pan-seared salmon is paired with a tart made of calabacitas, tomatoes, caciocavallo cheese and salsa trocadero, which is a tomato-based sauce. Info: 10600 E. Crescent Moon Drive, Scottsdale; 480.513.5085; www.talaverarestaurant.com. “My mom would always cook lunch for us after school. One of my all-time favorites was her calabacitas. I took her dish and made it something completely different and refined by transforming it into a tart that resembles veggie lasagna. The salsa trocadero is a sauce made at my family’s restaurant, which is located in Sonora, Mexico.”

Sonata’s Restaurant

Chef: Rick Dupere Mom: Katherine Dupere Dish: Fried mesquite honey cheese curds with cherry jam, $11 About: A Southwestern spin on a Midwest favorite with honey mustard and a secret ingredient from Mom – her highbush tart cherry jam sauce for dipping. Info: 7700 E. McCormick Pkwy., Scottsdale; 480.596.7522; www.destinationhotels.com/scottsdale-resort. “I inherited hundreds of cookbooks and cooking magazines from my mother. She had no problem interpreting exotic recipes with ingredients that were locally available to us and loved experimenting with sauces. While some of the family shied away from some of her creations, I was never afraid to try anything. This cherry jam recipe is in honor of one she always made, often on holidays.”

Perk Eatery Chef: Pauline Martinez Mom: Julie Micakaj Dish: Chicken on the coup, $12.59 About: Sausage and sage stuffing is crisped on the griddle and then topped with peppery sausage gravy and two eggs. Info: 6501 E. Greenway Pkwy., Scottsdale; 480.998.6026; www.perkeatery.com. “My mom always used to make a sauce with smoked sausage. During Thanksgiving, we’d always have leftover stuffing so I would add cream to her sauce and crisp up the leftover stuffing. More than just a hit with our family, it’s one of our most popular dishes on the menu – it was even featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”

Talavera at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North

Chef: Josh Bracher Mom: Beth Aiello Dish: Cabbage rolls, $19 About: Cabbage stuffed with pork, beef and rice is braised in pomodoro sauce, served over Boursin mash, and topped with bryndza cheese. Info: 10050 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.477.1390; www.sonatasrestaurant.com. “We had a lot of European culture growing up, especially with my mother’s side of the family being Finnish. One of my mom’s signature dishes was cabbage rolls, which I always devoured. The cabbage roll is found in nearly every European region, but often with a cultural twist. My favorite that she would make was of Lithuanian origin and has been on our menu since our inception.”

Los Sombreros Chef: Azucena E. Tovar Mom: Maria Esperanza Olvera Garcia Dish: Pollo con calabazas y crema chipotle, $19.95 About: Chicken breast with chopped zucchini in a creamy, zesty chipotle sauce. Info: 2534 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.994.1799; www.lossombreros.com. “There is nothing quite like the way your mom makes something. When I moved here from Mexico, I missed so much of her cooking, especially her steak mole dish and her insanely flavorful chicken with cream sauce, so this recipe is a near replica – with a few twists like my addition of spicy chipotle to the cream. I also take out the bones, which are actually used in a lot of Mexican cooking for additional flavor, but not always so popular here.”

LA SALA TEQUILA CANTINA

A modern Latin kitchen debuts in Scottsdale BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

T

he Shops at Gainey Village in Scottsdale just got another neighbor. Fresh off the heels of The Living Room Wine Café & Lounge opening in the popular central Scottsdale shopping center, La Sala Tequila Cantina debuted right next door in recent months. “La Sala is an intimate, 50-seat cantina next to its cool and convivial sister, The Living Room. The two concepts share an open-air kitchen and offer interior access back and forth between our two venues,” says Tom Kaufman, co-owner of the La Sala Family of Restaurants, which includes Humble Pie, La Sala, The Living Room, Rock Lobster and Chop. Local foodies will appreciate the authentic, from-scratch recipes and the modern take on classic Latin fare, not to mention the ability to order from The Living Room menu, and vice versa, if something piques their interest. The menu boasts mesquite-grilled flavors of Mexico and Latin America, such as carne asada, carnitas, shrimp ceviche and rock shrimp, and each item is designed to accompany their awardwinning margaritas and tequila/mezcal cocktails, $12 each or $8 each during happy hour. Some of the cocktail favorites include: Cinful Pineapple: Maestro Dobel Reposado Tequila SO SCOTTSDALE! |

No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
