The Scottsdale Realtor for the Scottsdale Lifestyle. I am an avid golfer and grew up on the golf course. My father was a golf professional for over 42 years and I am married to a golf professional as well. Golf is in my blood and real estate is my passion so the two paired together are heaven for me. When selecting a Realtor or real estate agent in Scottsdale, North Scottsdale, and Paradise Valley, strong knowledge of the community, strong negotiation skills, and a commitment to providing excellent service are all crucial elements. I was named Top 10 Producer in Homes and Land Magazine the last two consecutive years, a Top Agent in Scottsdale’s Business Journal and in the top one percent of Realtors in the state of Arizona. - Lisa Wadey

WOMEN’S HEALTH Gino Tutera MD FACOG, SottoPelle Medical Director answers your questions. What does Dr. Tutera offer to his other patients? He offers a scientific method of natural bioidentical hormone therapy that cannot be achieved with mass-produced synthetics. Dr. Tutera pioneered an innovative web-based BioCalc® system that provides each patient with a precisely dosed hormone pellet based on their individual needs and slipped under the skin for the maximum effectiveness. The SottoPelle® method eliminates the risks associated with most synthetic hormones. While often imitated but never duplicated, SottoPelle® remains the leader in pellet hormone therapy with its groundbreaking science and proprietary method that puts patients and their health first above everything else. Why would patients come to SottoPelle® over other places that offer similar treatments? SottoPelle® is the only precision-based hormone therapy with an individualized approach. Most doctors prescribe hormones in tablets, patches, creams, gels or generic pellets. Unlike other methods, SottoPelle® is based on science and works with the body in a way the body recognizes. Other doctors who do pellet therapy do not use this proprietary system and give patients a one-size-fits-all generic dose of hormone that is less effective and can trigger unwanted side effects. Such imprecision may sometimes provide shortterm relief of symptoms but does nothing to achieve the level of hormonal balance. The SottoPelle method delivers on the long-term benefits everyone needs for healthy aging and to prevent disease.

Do you have a question for Dr. Tutera? Visit our website www.sottopelletherapycom and contact us or submit all questions to response@sphrt.com

I am 52 years old and was used to the way I was feeling due to perimenopause and the gradual change it was giving me. I didn’t realize how long I had not been feeling like I used to when I was in my twenties and thirties until I started your (bio-identical) hormone therapy. It was almost, literally, an overnight change! —Cheryl

Thank you for saving my life, my marriage and for giving me back my energy and self worth… I feel 500 percent better and you were wrong about me feeling 35. I feel 25! —Bonnie

Before seeing Dr. Tutera, I was asked to work with a sales team. I didn’t feel I was capable of taking on such responsibility. After seeing Dr. Tutera and having the hormone replacement pellet (procedure), I have agreed to take the sales consulting job and will be working with a sales team for three months. —Joy

T

he stars must have been aligned the other day, and perhaps I should have played the lottery, because not only did both my kids play together (and—gasp!—I actually heard them laughing together), but as I put each of them to bed that night, they both were in loving moods and were cuddling and telling me how lucky they were that I was their Mom (yes, if I could have just replayed that day over and over, I would!). As anyone who is a parent knows, there are always ups and downs when you have kids. Some days are more trying than others, but overall, it’s the most rewarding thing you can do. In honor of Mother’s Day this month (men, if you’re reading this— head’s up—it’s May 10!), we profiled seven local women who not only manage to stay fashionable, but juggle motherhood and life with just as much style. You can read their fashion and mom tips on page 48. We also spoke with Christian Vera, host of the national show RightThisMinute, who shared with us how she ended up in the career she did, why she loves living here, and the other projects she’s working on right now. Read all about her on page 44. If you’re as excited about summer being right around the corner as I am (to go back to having kids—no homework! Phew!), we have lots of great products (flower-inspired home décor or sunglasses, anyone?) and styles (one-piece bathing suits are in this season!) throughout the issue to inspire you. Have a wonderful month—and Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!

“I’ve worked with several real estate agents in the past while looking for a new home. Jennifer was by far the best! She was extremely responsive when I called or sent her a text message. The amount of time she spent with me, always made me feel like I was her only client. She was extremely knowledgeable about the area, and made great recommendations. who

contributors WHAT WOULD BE YOUR PERFECT MOTHER’S DAY? ANSWER: In a perfect world, Mother’s Day would start with being presented with some incredible crafty thing that my children toiled over; something with far too much glue and glitter. We’d follow that up with a decadent brunch with the most perfect Eggs Benedict ever known to man, and then maybe a massage or spa treatment. In reality, I would settle for a day that my kids didn’t argue!

up close For founder Natalie Oldroyd, starting a company dedicated to creating clothing from recycled materials began in a studio. “I fell in love with yoga; that was the beginning,” she explains. “But I also felt that the practices of some manufacturers were not in line with the principles of yoga. A fundamental principle of the practice is Ahimsa, which means do no harm. Production of yoga wear under conditions I don’t feel are ethical and the manufacturing of textiles in a way that adds to the environmental cost in developing countries is not in-line with that principle. I was particularly concerned about textile pollution in China, where most of the fabric for U.S. yoga wear is produced. As a small manufacturer, I can’t guarantee 100 percent control over every supplier I use, but by sticking to U.S. sewing and fabric sourced from either U.S. or European suppliers and researching how they produce helps assure me that I’ve created a company among the most ethical in the country. I believe that recycled fibers have developed to the point where it is achievable to produce a virtually 100 percent eco-friendly line of sportswear without any compromise on quality.” Born in Canada, Oldroyd lived in the United Kingdom for many years before moving to the U.S. with her husband. She fell in love with Arizona, and decided she didn’t need to live in Los Angeles or New York to develop a clothing line. So how do pants made from recycled materials feel to the wearer? “The fabric feels like silk; that’s the best description,” explains Oldroyd. “I used two fabrics in my first round, one for the leggings and one for tops and shorts. The leggings are made

from fibers acquired from post-consumer waste, mainly plastic bottles. All of the fabric I used in my first round of production dries eerily quick. As a hot yoga girl, I feel compared to any other fabric I’ve used, nothing quite compares to it as it melts to you like a second skin. I will say that everyone I’ve spoken to who has bought a pair tells me they keep absentmindedly stroking their legs! I do the same. It just feels nice to the touch.” And not only do they feel great, but Oldroyd has also added some interesting details to make sure that they flatter the wearer, as well. “I did two styles of leggings, one crops and one full-lengths,” she says. “The full-lengths can be customized to various lengths. If you turn the pants inside out, you can see four small bars of stitches. These have been put in so women can cut just below any of the four on the inseam and shorten their leggings without the

seams unravelling. The waist on the leggings is quite high. It reaches up to the belly button. It is impossible to have a muffin top in my leggings, and it also gives women confidence in any yoga pose and when wearing them casually, which most of my customers do. But I’ve also had runners, CrossFit people, and weight trainers tell me they are happy with that aspect of the design. Tummies are a body part many women are sensitive about, me included!” Yoga Democracy (www.yogademocracy.com) is committed to donating 10 percent of net profits to environmental charities in keeping with the company’s eco-friendly DNA. Currently, Oldroyd is looking for a water charity to partner with, while also looking for new materials to use for the line. “Spring will see tops and shorts made from the same fabric as the leggings,” she says. “It will also see recycled nylon introduced into the range. Nylon has a particularly high environmental cost, which few customers know about. I’m very happy to have sourced this fabric. It’s made from waste that includes fishing nets and discarded carpets. That doesn’t make it sound very appealing, does it? But it feels amazing. I’ll also be adding two new styles–a new top and a new pair of shorts–and expanding the number of prints from just three to six. “I urge people to consider how their clothing is made and not be afraid to ask tough questions of the brands they support. As a designer I want women to put down the black yoga pants and try some prints! You don’t have to be teeny tiny to look good in them—there is a print for every body shape.”

Who Did Your Hair?

SCOTTSDALE’S HAIR COLOR GURU, ROD GENTRY, IS THE GO-TO EXPERT FOR COLORING YOUR TRESSES

HAIR COLOR IS TRICKY. Ensuring the perfect shade, finishing the process with hair that is still healthy, creating the perfect look—there are not many who can do it all or who are known as the go-to expert in color. But now Scottsdale has a color guru. Rod Gentry, one of the industry’s color experts, has relocated from Chicago— where he spent 24 years working in the field—to Scottsdale. His clients know four main things about Rod: They’ll receive undivided, personalized attention at their appointment (no double booking!); he’ll use only the top and best products to ensure their hair stays healthy; his wealth of knowledge and expertise will allow them to achieve the look they want; and that the color will be perfect, every time. Rod approaches hair color differently than others, first working with a client to determine the look they want, and then taking into account the client’s complexion and lifestyle to make sure that the end result will be something that is both flattering and workable.

One of his main focuses is always on the health of the hair, and so he uses only highend, enzyme-based developers (rather than peroxide-based ones) so that hair is left in a better condition, and extremely shiny. He also always finishes a color process with a conditioning treatment as part of the color service. “You can have long hair and great color, but if it’s damaged, it won’t look as good,” he explains.

HIS WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE WILL ALLOW THEM TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK THEY WANT; AND THAT THE COLOR WILL BE PERFECT, EVERY TIME. He relentlessly pursues education to stay at the top of his field, traveling worldwide to learn about the newest innovative techniques, products and knowledge, training in such places as London and New York. “I really think that education is the key to success,” he explains. Rod’s services include single process color, highlights, color gloss, color paneling, ombre, extended conditioning, color correction, color removal and more, as well as cutting-edge haircuts. “I guarantee my work. Period,” he says.

GIRL HELPING GIRLS

Aakanksha Saxena is working to change the world BY SHANA SCHWARZ

W

hile most kids are focused on equal parts of school and fun during high school, Desert Mountain sophomore Aakanksha Saxena has her heart and mind turned half a world away. “In 2009, when I was 10-years-old, I visited one of the all-girl orphanages in Lucknow, India, and was shocked by the lack of support offered to these abandoned girls,” says Saxena. “The orphanage did not have sufficient money or resources to fund most of the students’ college education, and was forced to ‘give them out for marriage’ when they turned 18.” Saxena returned to the same orphanage in 2013 and organized a three-week long educational summer program session for the girls. “The students’ academic development over the short span of time was remarkable, and their excitement was palatable,” she says. “I quickly realized the potential of making my efforts more scalable–my work didn’t need to be restricted to one orphanage or to summer programs. Thus, I founded Literacy Spree, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the goal of raising funds to empower underprivileged female youth through education.” For more information or to donate and help Literacy Spree, visit www.facebook.com/literacyspree.

Etc.

What do you want to do after school? I would like to continue working towards my goal and teach by example. By leveraging my background in math and science, I hope to major in computer science in order to further show our generation’s youth that math can be used to make tangible differences in our world. Who inspires you to give back? Since I have begun working on Literacy Spree, I have been spurred by the orphanage girls’ enthusiasm for learning and their motivation. They have continued to inspire me, through thick and thin, to work towards what I believe in. How can other people your age help on a local level? Anyone, regardless of his or her age, can make a difference. Students can organize local fundraisers and donate to organizations like Literacy Spree, which have the ability to ensure that collected funds are used effectively. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Not even a banana looks good with brown spots, which is why this is one of our most frequently asked questions. There are two main types of brown spots. The first are freckles or sunspots, and we can prescribe a topical cream to lighten them – or go a little deeper with chemical peels or laser treatments. The second type is seborrheic keratosis, or age spots, which can be frozen off or diminished with lasers. Brown spots are a common occurrence, but Spectrum Dermatology can restore a brighter, more even-toned look to your skin. Spots? We think not! A more youthful appearance is just a phone call away. APRIL SALOMON

The new executive director grows up with the MIM BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

T

he Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) opened to the public in April 2010. During its first five years, the MIM (www.mim.org) has become a world-class museum offering a musical immersion to visitors through its collection of 15,000 instruments from around the world. The new executive director, April Salomon, says becoming a world-class facility has always been the intent–and she would know. Hired as the executive assistant to the first president in 2007, she has been involved with the museum from its earliest days, and in many different roles. Salomon developed an interest in art early on. “I was always drawn to the creative aspects of life,” she explains. “I loved the history of art, where artists got their ideas.” But with her Puerto Rican and Cuban heritage, she also loved cooking. She studied culinary arts and worked as a private chef for several years before completing degrees in art history and museum studies. “My job [as executive director] is to steward, guide and shepherd what we’ve built,” says Salomon. “The MIM is unlike any experience you’ll ever have.”

Etc.

Have you always been interested in art and music? I traveled the world as a child thanks to my mom being married to an Air Force man, so I had the good fortune early on of being exposed to different peoples, cultures and music. I dabbled in music and even picked up a paintbrush. Although I originally went into culinary arts, museums were always my intention. How do you describe the Musical Instrument Museum to those who’ve never been? MIM allows people to connect around music. Everything here feels special as it transports visitors through their experiences. The guest experience is second to none—there is no comparison. If someone has already visited, is it worth coming back? A week later, a month later, six months later, it brings you back. We’re not a one and done. We’re always going to give you a reason to come back. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

B BIG APPLE STYLE

Chrissy Cunningham brings her Bohemian-chic, New York style to the Valley BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

orn and raised in New York, a city of top-notch fashion innovation, Chrissy Cunningham has always been exposed to the chic things in life. “I was very accustomed to shopping in stores that offered a broad variety of merchandise and unique items,” she explains. When this East Coast native settled on the West Coast, she brought her Bohemian, edgy and chic style with her. The birth of her son, Chase, motivated Cunningham to offer Valley residents a New York-style shopping experience. “After my son was born, I had the idea to recreate an edgy yet cozy ‘SoHostyle’ baby boutique where the residents of Arizona can purchase unique, high-end, and one-of-a-kind special items for baby and the expecting mom,” she says. This stylish mother to a 1½-year-old can be found at her North Scottsdale storefront, Cheeky Chic Baby Boutique (8989 E. Via Linda, Ste. 108, Scottsdale; 480.272.9659; www.cheekychicbb.com), where she combines comfort, class, and a unique touch into all of her daily ensembles– “I have a deep love for music and the arts, and my style most certainly reflects that.” Cunningham may be a full-time mom and businesswoman, but she is never too busy to feed her interests in fashion and design. She stays up-to-date on trends and gains inspiration from Pinterest and fashion magazines. “I believe that the world perceives you the way you present yourself,” she says. Which is your favorite retailer? Free People is my absolute favorite. I also really enjoy shopping at Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. Do you like to mix up your style? Yes. I love to pair a band T-shirt or a loose graphic tank top with a pair of skinny jeans and some heels! What are some of your hobbies? Barre fitness is my number one hobby. I consider myself a workout-a-holic! During my free time, I instruct group fitness and burn at the barre classes.

JOHN COLLURA

M

His fashion style is professional yet classic

ost days you will find Chef John Collura in the kitchen at Cibo e Vino, sporting his chef jacket, a pair of True Religion jeans, and a simple but comfortable pair of shoes. His style, professional yet classic and clean, carries with him outside of the kitchen, as well. “At work I’m always wearing a chef’s coat, so when I’m not there I enjoy dressing up. It’s my time to have fun with my wardrobe and look,” says Collura. Friends and family will typically find Collura wearing upscale jeans such as True Religion and Rock Revival, and shirts from Robert Graham and Bugatchi. “I like to be comfortable yet stylish when I am out. Typically I have two looks— jeans and a button-up shirt or khakis and a polo shirt. Those are both good combinations for me,” he says. Though his preference is the styles of today, if he had to go back to any era, the 1950s or 1960s, where men dressed a bit more dapper, would be his choice. Who are some of the Hollywood stars whose style you might emulate or who you feel you most closely match? I would say there are individuals in Hollywood I emulate; however, not one in particular. I do like to take different looks and styles from various celebrities and incorporate them into my own image. When you aren’t working at the restaurant, what do you like to do for fun and entertainment? When I am not at the restaurant I like to enjoy other local restaurants and support their culinary talents. I’m an avid golfer and enjoy being out on the course. I also find a certain level of escape in reading different cookbooks, to continually grow and broaden my skills. Although, nothing is more important in my spare time than spending time with my family and traveling to experience new cultures.

THE RIGHT STUFF CHRISTIAN VERA TALKS LIFE, LOVE, & THE CAREER THAT COULD HAVE BEEN

o see Christian Vera on her hit show RightThisMinute, you’d think she had always planned to be on television. It’s not just that she’s beautiful; she also has that invaluable trait that all the great broadcasters possess: charm. If she seems like the kind of woman you could sit down and have a good chat and some laughs with, it’s because she truly is as down to earth as she seems. The truth, though, is that she almost took a very different path in life. When asked how she got into broadcasting, she tells a backstory that might surprise you.

The Accidental Broadcaster “It was completely by chance,” she explains. “My intentions were to become an architect. I love design and architecture. In fact, I was enrolled in the design program at San Jose State University (SJSU) for the first half of my college career. Half of the books in my library are design and architecture titles ranging from Frank Ghery to Ricardo Legorreta to Santiago Calatrava. Those guys are amazing architects. I still have my tools and drafting table in storage back home. “While still a design student at SJSU, I met the executive producer of a magazine-format TV show in San Francisco. He offered me a position as a reporter for upcoming events around the city. I agreed because I thought it’d be a fun thing to do. Little did I know the course of my life was about to change completely. I loved meeting people, learning new things, visiting new places. Suddenly, sitting behind the drafting table didn’t seem as gratifying as being in front of the camera and telling a story to thousands of people through the tube. I began learning the ins-and-outs of production. I changed my major and detoured to the Mass Communications & Journalism department instead. It was perfect! I’ve always been very curious and very much a go-getter. I didn’t just want to be in front of the camera. I also wanted to write and produce. So I did. My friends sometimes joke that I’m a triple-threat broadcaster. That cracks me up!” That change in her career led her to a blossoming career in front of the camera. She was working in California as a reporter and host for E! News Now and for KTLA-TV as a red carpet correspondent when producers from a Phoenixbased production company approached her about a new show. “RightThisMinute is the brainchild of MagicDust Television,” says Vera. “The partners had the idea to do a show about viral videos and the stories behind them. It was a pretty simple idea, yet brilliant! They found me in Los Angeles and I’ve been with RightThisMinute since day one. I flew to Phoenix to meet with the executive team and I immediately knew it was something I had to do. I was fascinated by the idea of a broadcast television show about news from the Internet. It seemed like a crazy idea, so it had to work, right?

“PERSONALLY, I SEE MYSELF WORKING, TRAVELING, AND HOPEFULLY ENJOYING LIFE WITH A FAMILY OF MY OWN WHEN MR. RIGHT FINALLY COMES ALONG. APPARENTLY HE’S STILL HANGING OUT WITH ALL THE WRONG GIRLS. IN THE MEANTIME, I’M GOING TO LEARN HOW TO RIDE A MOTORCYCLE AND GO DIVING WITH SHARKS!” Fortunately, it has worked and people across the country love RightThisMinute. We’ve grown so much since 2011, but my favorite part is that there is a very successful national TV show being produced right here in Phoenix.” “I bring a unique perspective to the table, as well,” she adds. “I had the good fortune of having been born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, then moved to California, where I finished my education. That bi-cultural experience allows me to bring a certain level of sensitivity to stories SO SCOTTSDALE! |

from Latin America, and I can help decipher certain cultures and customs that would otherwise be lost in translation. Being able to do that is a privilege, and I’m so proud to be a part of such an innovative show.” A View of the World Vera has brought a lot to the show, but is also thankful for what the show has brought to her life. “I have learned so much being on the show and have met some really amazing people, including co-hosts Beth, Gayle, Nick and Oli,” she explains. “Being on the show has opened up a new world for me. I get to see the amazing things people are doing around the world, from wingsuit flying to international motorcycle trips to shark conservation work in Australia to charity work in South America. I’ve seen the worst of people, but I’ve also seen the beautiful heart of humanity to a degree I never anticipated. It has evoked a sense of gratitude and adventure in my own life. I have a whole new bucket list! Like diving with sharks or walking into the crater of a volcano. I have a minor in geology, so that would be pretty epic for me. “Another thing I love is learning that I have a positive impact on people. I like hearing from young girls who tell me they decided to get into journalism because of me. People sometimes write in and tell me that I put a smile on their face that day. To me, that’s a day well done.” Loving Arizona Relocating to Arizona has also turned out to be a great change in Vera’s life. “I’m a bit of a lifestyle chameleon and living here allows me to do everything I want to,” says Vera. “One day I’ll be living it up getting pampered at the spa followed by an opera after a nice private dinner with Chef Gabriele Bertaccini from Culinary Mischief. The next day I could be hiking in Sedona and coming back to have dinner ordered from a taco truck. One of my favorite memories here was when my friends and I went to see an opera and decided to head straight to the taco truck right after in full opera attire. They were all in their fine Italian suits and I in my evening gown. It was funny and completely awesome! I really do like the finer things in life, but I’m not afraid to get down and dirty. Life shouldn’t be taken

too seriously anyway. “I’m a total foodie, so I absolutely love the culinary culture of Scottsdale and Phoenix,” she adds. “The Mission, Frank and Lupe’s, and Café Tranquilo are my favorite Mexican spots. Steak 44 is pretty delicious. Pomo Pizzeria and Casa Mia are very authentic Italian locales. Nobuo at Teeter House is one of my top five favorite restaurants. The art scene is also pretty diverse, and I love hitting all the different galleries. I’m a huge supporter of the arts and I’ve actually purchased two of my all-time favorite pieces here in Phoenix. One is a beautiful hummingbird by veteran Phoenix-based Chicano artist Martin Moreno, and the other is a matador in full ‘traje de luces’ and bullfighting cape in 3D by Felipe Ruiz.” Looking Ahead Between a hit show and a busy social life, things are going well for Vera right about now. Just because things are great now, though, doesn’t mean she’s not envisioning what her life might be like five or 10 years down the road. “Professionally, I see myself as president of my own production company,” she says. “I love my job at RightThisMinute and my career, so I want to continue telling compelling stories for as long as I can. I like working so I spend a lot of time on side projects, as well. In fact, I spent two weeks in Mexico shooting a short documentary about my grandparents back in January. My grandfather, Agustin Vera, is a passionate mariachi musical director married to the love of his life, Anita, for almost 60 years. It’s a genuine love story that I wanted to tell. I’m also in talks with my best friend to co-author a book. I’m very excited about the topic. We hope to finish writing it by the end of the year and will have a blog to share the progress throughout the next few months. “Personally, I see myself working, traveling, and hopefully enjoying life with a family of my own when Mr. Right finally comes along. Apparently he’s still hanging out with all the wrong girls. In the meantime, I’m going to learn how to ride a motorcycle and go diving with sharks!” For the latest news and best of videos from the Internet, catch Vera on RightThisMinute or follow her on Twitter (@christianvera). YETTA GIBSON CHILDREN: Jayla (step-daughter), 12; Slye, 4; and Eva, 1 WHAT YOU DO DURING THE DAY: I host a show called The NOW Arizona weekdays at 4 p.m. on ABC15. BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOM: Being able to experience love on a totally different level… and seeing the essence of yourself in their eyes as they grow up. THE ONE THING NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT BEING A MOM: That you spend all of your waking and sleeping hours thinking, wondering, and worrying about your kids. There will never be any TRUE relaxation anymore. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN? My favorite place to spend time with them is at home. My favorite time to spend time with them is in the morning, the beginning of the day! HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? Casual chic, super funky fresh. YOUR GO-TO TYPES OF OUTFITS ARE: Jeans, a blazer, heels, and spiky wild hair. YOUR GUILTY FASHION INDULGENCE? One hundred percent makeup. I’m an unofficial makeup artist, you know. HEELS OR NO HEELS? Secretly no heels. But you’ll never catch me without a pair on TV. Sometimes I rock yellow NEON pumps during the news! WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP? Hands down: ZARA, DSW, Last Chance, BCBG, Macy’s. FAVORITE DESIGNERS? BCBG and ZARA. DID YOUR KIDS INHERET YOUR SENSE OF FASHION? My girls like to REALLY dress up. The fancy necklaces, rings, crazy accessories, foofy skirts, dresses, fancy shoes, the whole 9! WHAT’S THE KEY TO JUGGLING FASHION AND MOTHERHOOD? Make it easy. For me, the fit has to be comfy all the way down to the highest heel. Comfy first, stylish second. As long as it’s cute and comfy, I’m good! I try to stay away from really trendy pieces… oh, and white pants, white shirts– forget about it. ONE PIECE OF STYLE ADVICE YOU’D PASS ON TO YOUR DAUGHTERS: Go against the grain. Be different. Don’t buy the pieces everyone else wears. Come up with your own super funky fresh style.

ANDREA VERES HILAND CHILDREN: Ava, 9, and Hawkins, 5 WHAT YOU DO DURING THE DAY: While the kids are at school, I am working hard at my “other job,” which is hosting the “asked and answered” program for The Arizona Republic and www.azcentral.com. BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOM: The butterflies I feel every time one of them hugs me! THE ONE THING NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT BEING A MOM: That I would constantly feel inadequate! HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN? I like to do any activity that gets them talking! I love hearing about what’s going on inside those little minds! It most likely occurs when I have one of them at a time…. playing air hockey, hiking, even just driving in the car. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? I usually gravitate toward simple clothes that I can personalize by adding really cool accessories. I aim for chic and classic, with a bit of whimsical thrown in there at times. YOUR GO-TO TYPES OF OUTFITS ARE: Right now I’d say a loose, fitting top, a skinny jean of some sort, heels, bangles, and a long necklace. YOUR GUILTY FASHION INDULGENCE? It’s hard to pick one (I have a touch of “Fashion Attention Deficit Disorder”)… sometimes it’s shoes, sometimes it’s bags or sunglasses, but it usually tends to be in the accessory department. FAVORITE DESIGNERS? That’s kind of a tough question for someone like me, because I don’t ever spend on just one designer. But I do know that Carol Anderson (CAbi) clothes are made very well—and fit me beautifully. I can also always count on White House l Black Market, BCBG, and Calvin Klein to make me feel pretty. DID YOUR KIDS INHERET YOUR SENSE OF FASHION? Ha! My husband and I laugh more over our daughter’s fashion choices than just about anything else. I will say that my mom has always had an incredible sense of style… and still turns heads to this day. She was a great example to look up to as I was growing up. ONE PIECE OF STYLE ADVICE YOU’D PASS ON TO YOUR DAUGHTER: Know your body type! There will be certain styles that look great on others—and not you—and that’s okay! Figure out what flatters your body and go with that! Also, I think you should always strive to present your “best self”—and that trickles into fashion, but it’s much more about who you are as a person. If you exude poise and confidence, half the fashion battle has been won.

LAURA STEWART, PSY.D. CHILDREN: Calli, 16; Emily, 12; and Max, 11 WHAT YOU DO DURING THE DAY: I am a clinical psychologist. I split time between my private practice in North Central Phoenix and Recovia, a new functional rehabilitation program in Scottsdale. BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOM: The best thing is watching my kids grow and develop into the amazing individuals they are meant to be. Each one is uniquely different and I feel so blessed to be their mom. I try to stay present and mindful as much as possible. The moments I am able to accomplish this are the best—whether they are funny, sweet or crazy! THE ONE THING NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT BEING A MOM: How much I learn from my kids. They make me want to be a better person, and watching them navigate life is a fascinating experience. Sometimes just observing how they handle a situation or talking with them about an issue ends up being a life lesson for me. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN? I love hanging out at home and cooking together. No matter what kind of day we all had, working together to cook a meal seems to make everything feel right again with the world. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? I would describe my fashion style as conservative, chic and sophisticated. YOUR GO-TO TYPES OF OUTFITS ARE: My go-to outfits are any wrap-style dress for work, or a blazer paired with dark jeans for more casual days. YOUR GUILTY FASHION INDULGENCE? Handbags, lots of them. HEELS OR NO HEELS? Heels. WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP? BCBG, Muse Apparel and Nordstrom. FAVORITE DESIGNERS? Tory Burch, Vince Camuto, Diane von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein. DID YOUR KIDS INHERET YOUR SENSE OF FASHION? So far that’s a big no—but it could change. My kids take casual dressing to a whole new level. WHAT’S THE KEY TO JUGGLING FASHION AND MOTHERHOOD? I wish I had the key to juggling fashion and motherhood! I know for me, if I don’t plan my outfits ahead of time, I will end up throwing something together frantically in the morning.

JORDAN ROSE CHILDREN: Logan, 8, and Carson, 6 WHAT YOU DO DURING THE DAY: Founder and president of Rose Law Group pc full-service law firm, the largest womanowned law firm in Arizona history. BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOM: The way they look at you as if you are their world. THE ONE THING NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT BEING A MOM: If you don’t intervene, they would just throw balls and run around for 12 hours straight. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN? I love playing “school,” board games, reading, basketball with a really short hoop, and oddly, I like driving them places as they can’t go anywhere so we end up having great discussions. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? Couture funk. YOUR GO-TO TYPES OF OUTFITS ARE: Really high chunky heels (I have finally determined the risk/reward of wearing skinny heels is not worth taking), a short fun dress or a suit, and generally not much black. YOUR GUILTY FASHION INDULGENCE? Chanel suits. HEELS OR NO HEELS? Heels—my flipflops even have platforms—I like feeling tall! WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP? I don’t actually go shopping, ever—it takes way too much time. I have this great system where the designers I like email me pictures of clothes and if I like them they ship them to me to try on. FAVORITE DESIGNERS? Chanel, Marni, Stella McCartney, Dries Van Nooten, Commes des Garcons, Lanvin, and Mui Mui. DID YOUR KIDS INHERET YOUR SENSE OF FASHION? Total opposite—I’m couture and they appear allergic to collared shirts! WHAT’S THE KEY TO JUGGLING FASHION AND MOTHERHOOD? Platform tennis shoes. Wine News

A Renovated Masterpiece

One of Scottsdale’s oldest resorts is getting a makeover. This summer, the Scottsdale Resort & Conference Center, A Destination Hotel, will embark on a $9 million renovation to transform the 39-year-old independent property. The resort will get a new restaurant and bar, transformed pool area, additional outdoor meeting and event space, renovated guest rooms, and more. The designers, PHX Architects and SB Design, developed plans to update the look of the resort and introduce new amenities, while staying true to the rich history of the property that was originally designed by legendary Scottsdale architect Bennie Gonzales. The property will also receive an updated name—The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch, A Destination Hotel. 7700 E. McCormick Pkwy., Scottsdale; 480.991.9000; www.thescottsdaleresort.com.

Not Your Usual Garden

There’s a new garden in town—at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia, that is. The resort recently added a 4,000-square-foot Chef’s Kitchen & Herb Garden, which will not only provide fresh local produce and herbs for all of the resort’s culinary outlets, but can also serve as a venue for events—from private dinners to weddings to executive meetings, and more. Beautiful, in so many ways. 4949 E. Lincoln Drive, Scottsdale; 480.627.3200; www.omnihotels.com/ hotels/scottsdale-montelucia.

Looking to try a new wine? Lawrence Dunham Vineyards (LDV)—which has a vineyard along Ash Creek in the Chiricahua Mountain foothills and a Scottsdale-based wine gallery and tasting room—just added these three new releases. The 2013 Sky Island Viognier is a crisp white wine that envelops the purity of the Sky Island region’s mountain fruit with hints of apricot and a clean finish of flint and minerals ($18). The 2012 Grenache is a followup to the popular (and sold out!) 2010 Grenache, and displays a more full-bodied, intense fruit flavor with hints of licorice and toast ($25). The 2012 Syrah is LDV’s first estate Syrah release. With 100% Syrah grapes aged for 30 months, this fullbodied wine encompasses all the classic characteristics of a fine Syrah—dark berries, leather and a touch of mocha ($32). 6951 E. 1st St., Scottsdale; 480.664.4822; www.lawrencedunhamvineyards.com.

6TH ANNUAL MOTHER’S GRACE BRUNCH

Enjoy a champagne brunch, shopping, and an inspirational speaker at this event that helps mothers in need

I

n the early 2000s, Michelle Fanger, then a corporate executive, suddenly found herself in need of help. She had been working to make a difference in the lives of mothers, and had spent years successfully coordinating humanitarian efforts to mothers all around the nation. Then one day, Fanger found herself at a doctor’s office, with a diagnosis of a severe form of breast cancer.

If You Go…

WHAT: 6th Annual Mother’s Grace Brunch WHEN: May 7, 9:30 a.m-12:30 p.m. WHERE: 6811 N. Desert Shadows, Paradise Valley INFORMATION: www.mothers-grace.org

Barely three weeks later, Fanger’s son had to be rushed to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. It was then that Fanger realized the void and the immediate needs an organization like Mother’s Grace could fulfill. Mother’s Grace Foundation, which was founded by Fanger, is committed to healing the world, one mother at a time. The organization is dedicated to the support of mothers and children who have endured life tragedies. By providing financial support and guidance, Mother’s Grace empowers these women to reach their goals of making a difference in their communities by helping others inflicted with similar circumstances. “As a corporate executive, I was trying to add value by helping other mothers in need,” Fanger explains. “I had lost my own mother at young age and felt a need to connect with other mothers and help during those difficult times. Then it all came full-circle with my own diagnosis and my son’s diagnosis. I immediately understood the true need of mothers who are the backbone of their family and what kind of support they need during these life-changing events.”

Now, just in time for Mother’s Day, the organization celebrates women with a tribute to graceful mothers and their inspirational work with this event, which benefits the foundation. Guests will enjoy a champagne brunch, shopping, and an inspirational guest speaker. The event is chaired by Mother’s Grace board member and Arizona’s First Lady Angela Ducey, alongside Fanger. Although there is no cost to attend, a donation to the organization in an amount of your choice is appreciated. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

An evening under the stars for a great cause BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

I

t will be a fiesta to remember! Get ready for a festive evening under the stars for a great cause. At the 42nd Annual Fiesta STARS, guests will enjoy a multi-course dinner, live entertainment, and a silent auction. “Last year’s Fiesta was wildly successful, and we are looking forward to topping that experience this year with little surprises around every corner! STARS is one of the few ‘homegrown’ Scottsdale nonprofits in the community, and we have so much to celebrate,” says Toby Fox, director of development at STARS (Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation Services). Patricia and Anthony LaBue, who have tirelessly contributed to STARS, will also be honored with the prestigious 2015 Humanitarian Award at the event. The award is the organization’s highest honor, and is given to outstanding individuals who have made significant, enduring contributions benefiting adults with developmental and cognitive disabilities.

Additionally, the evening will include the launch of the Virginia Korte Fund, in honor of the visionary leadership of longtime President and CEO, and Scottsdale City Council Member, Virginia Korte. The Arizona cocktail-attire evening, which is co-chaired by Melinda and John Gulick, benefits STARS. STARS provides adults with developmental and cognitive disabilities the tools they need to reach their full potential, including where they can learn job skills and earn a wage, explore their creative side, and develop friendships with their peers and others in the community. STARS offers day programs, vocational and employment services, and transition services.

t is the procedure everyone is talking about. With unparalleled safety and minimal discomfort, Liposuction has quickly become the most popular cosmetic surgery in our modern era. With little to no downtime and much less bruising than in traditional methods, more and more individuals are opting to finally get rid of those love handles, saggy arms or extra chin they have tried desperately for years to trim off. Big changes in the methods of anesthesia and the instruments used in the procedure are all part of the positively remarkable change in Liposuction today. By injecting the fat cells with a local anesthesia to numb the treatment area, patients are

LAUGH FACTORY DELIVERS HILARITY IN SCOTTSDALE

id you hear that? Scottsdale just got a whole lot funnier when Laugh Factory opened its doors. The renowned comedy club is primarily owned by legendary comedian and actor Paul Rodriguez, and the physical space has undergone a beautiful transformation and makeover, and is now poised to bring in the nation’s top comedic talent. The Scottsdale Laugh Factory is a stand-alone establishment. “We’re going to make sure this place runs perfectly, for starters,” says Paul Hopp, general manager for the Scottsdale Laugh Factory. “We’ll have different friends and comedians coming in.” Some of the comics that have appeared at the other Laugh Factory locations include Tim Allen, Dave

Chappelle, Alonzo Bodden, Arie Spears, Iliza Shlesinger, and Judah Friedlander, to name just a few. Laugh Factory will draw in national talent, as well as showcase homegrown comics. “This whole thing was Rodriguez’s idea,” states Hopp. “We go back over 30 years. We started out in the early 1980s and I started out doing some work for touring road productions for four years and then settled here in Phoenix. I love to do shows and was sick of being on the road. I got into comedy at the time and had two comedy clubs here in the 1980s and early 1990s.” After that, he raised a family back East for about 15 years, and then Hopp reconnected with Rodriguez. “Next thing I know we were looking

for properties and hiring brokers and we rented this place a year ago March and did a lot of work to it. We built what we wanted,” Hopp explains. “I’m tempted to say we spared no expense, but it’s really that we spared no need. I’ve had half a dozen clubs and Paul has worked in thousands of them, and it’s like we know what’s going to work.” Hopp is extremely proud of Laugh Factory because it’s been built from scratch. The room is large, seats nearly 400, and has plenty of space to walk between tables in both the and upper and lower levels. The slightly curved seating arrangement is sleek and easy to navigate. “I really believe this room is going to rock with live shows. We’re going to have some really good productions here because of the mechanics in this room,” says Hopp. The Laugh Factory menu includes burgers, sandwiches, a variety of appetizers, and signature tacos. “I hired a neat lady to be in charge of the tacos. I really want to have the best tacos in town, and that’s a big statement in Arizona because everybody’s got tacos,” Hopp says. “We put more thought into the wine list and the food because we’re in a location where people will appreciate that.” 7000 E. CHEF CONVERSATIONS

In the kitchen with Chef April Kindt of Proof at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN | PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A CHEF? When I was 10-years-old I began watching PBS cooking shows instead of cartoons. My favorites were Great Chefs and Cooking Secrets of the CIA. It was then that I decided I would go to the CIA [Culinary Institute of America] and I would be a chef. WHAT DRAWS YOU TO COOKING? Mostly the eating! I love tasting new things and building dishes off of those flavor profiles. The passionate people, intense culture, and fast pace of the kitchen are also added perks. Also, even though the kitchen is a loud chaotic place, cooking has a calming effect on me. When I am stressed, angry or sad, going to work makes me feel better.

ARE YOU PLANNING ANY CHANGES TO THE MENU AT PROOF? There are many big changes planned to the Proof spring/summer menu. We will have several new dishes and we will also be refining some of Proof’s popular classics. I am most excited about the new take on our signature dish, Chicken and Waffles. As a culinary team, we wanted to stay true to Proof’s all-American, homegrown concept, but add in an element of finesse to the homestyle classics. WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE DISH ON THE MENU? My favorite dish on the current menu is the Seafood Cioppino. My favorite dish from the upcoming menu is the Clams with bacon broth, beer bread and red pepper jam.

ANY COOKING TIP YOU CAN SHARE? Be fearless, eat everything, and try odd combinations. You never know what will taste good until you try it. Some of the best ideas are born out of failures. IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF, YOU’D BE: I would be a writer. I would either write about food, or write children’s books... or children’s books about food! April Kindt was recently appointed Sous Chef at Proof, An American Canteen, and now oversees all activity in the restaurant, including culinary direction and menu development. harcoal is hot–and we’re not talking about grills and barbeques. We’re talking beauty and cleansing products that dig deep to detoxify and balance your complexion. While it may seem the most unlikely ingredient for a deep clean, natural charcoal purifies skin by drawing out and trapping impurities. Go ahead, light a fire under your spring cleaning beauty routine with these charcoal-infused product finds.

Boscia Konjac Cleansing Sponge with Bamboo Charcoal. Infused with bamboo charcoal, this pillow-soft Konjac Cleansing Sponge eradicates blemish-causing bacteria for smoother, softer, brighter-looking skin. $15 at www.sephora.com and select Sephora stores.

The newest (and possibly cheapest) secret weapon against blackheads, these new nose strips from Bioré come fortified with natural charcoal powder to strip away trapped debris and oily buildup, and diminish pore size over time. $6.49 www.biore.com and most drugstores. Peter Thomas Roth Irish Moor Mud. Like a magnet, the activated charcoal is this rich, new black-as-night mask draws impurities and toxins from congested pores while minimizing the look of pores and fine lines, and infusing skin with a surge of minerals and potent antioxidants. $58 at www.peterthomasroth.com and select Sephora stores.

Earth Therapeutics Purifying Hydro Towel. Medicinal bamboo charcoal is woven into the active fabric of this textured bodycleansing towel to polish away the outer layers of dead skin, unclog pores, and stimulate circulation. $9.99 at www.earththerapeutics. net and select Ulta stores.

Being a blue eyed blond I was worried that my eyebrows would look done but Rachell has been custom blending her own colors for each person for over twenty years so I trusted her to get the right shade and shape. I love the arch she gave me! It was like getting an instant lift! I get so many compliments on how my eyeliner enhances my lash line and makes my blue eyes just pop! But it still looks super natural! —Tina Clemmons President/Owner De Novo Scan, Clinical Thermography

I am a breast cancer survivor and my Doctor trusts her patients to Rachell for the final phase of Breasthetics (3-d nipple tattoo and areola restoration) after breast cancer. My tatas are gorgeous thanks to Rachell! After that I totally trusted her to do my eyeliner, which I loved, so then I even did my Eyebrows and Lips! —Ellen Elson Realtor/Luxury Private Listings

I was most impressed with Rachell’s conservative approach to permanent makeup, she really stresses you can always add more and that made me comfortable. She is such a color genius and so experienced. I love that now I can just get up and go. —Dawn Billings Heartlink Founder, Creator of Primary Colors Personality Test

2015 NISSAN MURANO Murano honors its name: smooth as glass

Horsepower: 260

BY JIM PRUETER

Fuel Economy: 21/28–City/Highway Fab Features:

NASA-inspired zero-gravity seats Smooth, comfortable driving feel Gorgeous interior

I

recently spent a week driving the thoroughly revamped 2015 Nissan Murano, which, as unlikely as it may seem, made me think of John Keats. One of the unluckiest chaps ever to put quill to paper, Keats once wrote that “poetry should surprise by fine excess and not by singularity.” Well, there’s certainly nothing singular about the new Murano, but as for fine excess, it has that covered. For $42,540, our Murano Platinum series was positively jammed with the latest technology (intelligent cruise control, Around View® monitoring, advanced safety features), comforts (Nissan’s NASA-inspired zero-gravity, no-pressure seats; Bose® premium audio system; SO SCOTTSDALE! |

SS_92_93Wheels_May15.indd 92

92

heated front and rear seats; heated steering wheel); and conveniences (remote start, one-touch-up-and-down power windows, power rear liftgate, a back seat that has actual adult-size legroom, and a user-friendly infotainment/connectivity system). So does that mean the new Murano is poetry? Ah, no, not really. But it is one of the smoothest, easiest to drive, most comfortable to ride in, and most provocatively styled vehicles we’ve tested in quite some time. It’s also quite tempting for the money, particularly when you factor in whatever discounts and rebates you can get from Nissan and your local dealer. Even at retail, our Murano undercuts a comparably equipped Lexus RX by many thousands of dollars. I know that even making the Lexus versus Nissan comparison is enough to get me drummed out of North Scottsdale zip codes, but hear me out. For starters, the Murano looks terrific. Of course, reasonable people often disagree on matters of taste, so you might not like the looks. But, those gratuitous hips above the rear wheels are certainly more aggressive than anything you’ll see on a vehicle with Lexus badging. Well drawn and tightly proportioned, the Murano cuts a pretty dashing figure on the street. We especially like the interior in our Platinum tester, with mocha leather that is striking in a good way. The trim finish about the dash, door panels and center console is called “jasper pearlescent,” and is supposed to resemble Mother of Pearl. It looks terrific. Overall, the new Murano is as smoothly contoured as the glass from which it takes its name—and it drives just as well. We think its target buyers—kidfree, fashion-conscious professionals aged 35-45 who disdain truck-like SUVs— will share the same effusive praise for the Murano as Keats did for Fanny Brawne. Automotive writer Jim Prueter is a spokesperson for AAA, and his auto reviews and travel stories appear nationally in print and online. food files Gone are the days of the “roach coach”—these days, food trucks are serving up creative fare crafted by the hands of some of the most talented culinary artists in the Valley. The options go far beyond the once easy-to-come-by burger and fries–these days you have a variety of cuisines to choose from, and unexpected menu items. Thankfully, food trucks are becoming more and more prevalent, showing up at sporting events, farmers markets, and even workplaces, giving everyone the opportunity to sample dynamic and mouthwatering dishes without restaurant prices. While there are a multitude of food trucks in the Valley, we’ve collected a sampling of some notable trucks where you’ll definitely want to test drive their food.

Frosted Frenzy Cupcakes

The Maine Lobster Lady If you’ve ever had the occasion to spend time on the East Coast, you likely know the heart- and soul-warming joy of a freshly created lobster roll–the sweet and succulent lobster that almost melts in your mouth and is intensified with a fresh and zippy lemon aioli. The Maine Lobster Lady takes great pride in its dishes and makes sure that each diner is introduced to the sweetest, most delicious seafood they have ever tasted. You can get your Lobster Roll traditional or Connecticut-style (warm and drizzled with melted butter). You can also indulge in luscious Lobster Mac & Cheese, silky Lobster Bisque, and crispy Maine Shrimp Puffs. The simple dishes with their high-quality ingredients and robust flavors can almost make you smell the salty ocean air. www.mainelobsterlady. com; look for them at the Scottsdale Food Truck Caravan.

The Roasted Shallot Food Truck

Triple Dot Food Truck

If you are looking for a culmination of the best local, sustainable and seasonal ingredients manifested into gourmet street food, the Roasted Shallot is sure to have what you’re looking for. The menu boasts a variety of gluten-free and vegetarian options that are brimming with freshness and flavor. A fan favorite is their Grown Up Grilled Cheese, a fanciful combination of roasted tomatoes, shredded greens, crumbled feta, and melted cheddar cheese on toasted sourdough. The veggies and feta bring about a new twist to the time-tested favorite of both children and adults alike. Looking for a light and refreshing salad? How about the Get Yo’ Greens Salad made of a combination of peppery arugula, shredded kale, roasted tomatoes, red chiles, Crow’s goat cheese, and roasted pepitas? With the slight bitterness of the kale, the sweetness of the tomatoes, and the creaminess of the goat cheese, this salad has fresh-from-the-garden flavor that is full of antioxidants and vitamins. www.theroastedshallot.com; look for them at the Scottsdale Food Truck Caravan.

There aren’t many places in the Valley that offer you a mix of Spanish and Dutch food. Actually, there’s really only one place, and that would be the Triple Dot Food Truck. The menu is based off of the owner’s favorite foods: Empanadas, Bitterballen and Stroopwafels. Each category comes with seemingly countless options. Empanadas come in breakfast, savory and sweet options. Scrambled eggs and chorizo? Shepherd’s Pie? Buffalo Chicken? All unexpected ingredients delivered in a delightfully creative vessel. The Bitterballen, a Dutch treat of breaded balls with a tender beef filling, come with a side of mustard or served on a hoagie for a new and interesting sandwich. Stroopwafels, ever heard of them? Another Dutch treat, this one of the dessert variety. It’s a delicate waffle made from two thin layers of baked dough with a caramellike syrup filling in the middle. There are a variety of flavored syrups available with the Stroopwafels—and you can even take a few home with you to enjoy later. www.tripledotfoodtruck.com; look for them at the Scottsdale Food Truck Caravan.

DELEÓN

A tequila that’s in a class all alone BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

D

eLeón Tequila boasts famous fans, including one famous fan so impressed with the high-end brand of 100% Pure Agave Tequila that he purchased a stake in the company itself. The fan? Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. In 2014, Combs—who has made a name for himself in the spirit world by helping increase Ciroc Vodka from 50,000 cases a year in sales to two million—purchased DeLeón in partnership with the world’s largest spirits company, Diageo. Since the purchase, the DeLeón family of tequilas has certainly gained attention—but is it worth all the hype? In a word—yes.

the precise guidance of the master distiller, contributes enriched depth and complexity to the agave’s natural sweetness, creating a remarkably nuanced character. DeLeón’s astonishing depth of flavor is also thanks to two distillations, which allows the tequila to retain the unique character acquired during the fermentation process. The master distiller purposefully and artfully cuts the beginning and end of the distillation, allowing only the absolute best portion, or Corazon, to find its way into every bottle, creating a subtle taste profile. Each varietal of the brand is displayed in a stunning bespoke-style bottle made from high-quality, fragrance-grade glass and boldly tattooed with the distinguishing mark of the DeLeón brand. Each expression in the ultra-premium and luxury collections is strikingly defined. Fine-line detailing accentuates the crowning, signature ornate metal closure, the master for which was meticulously hand carved by a jeweler from a one pound solid ball of sterling silver.

Standout Sippers Since taking the reins in 2014, Combs has expanded the DeLeón line to include a very popular “Platinum” option, meant to go head-to-head with Patrón, according to Combs. But the true standout of the line is the DeLeón Extra Añejo—or DeLeón 51—which is the only tequila in the world to present a cask-strength 102-proof tequila. Rivaling the finest of world-class scotches, this is not a tequila for everyone. Only the very select, and the very selective. The Extra Añejo is aged for at least 36 months in American white oak barrels and then bottled at 108 proof. And while the higher alcohol content is noticeable, it is beautifully integrated with elegant notes of mature agave, vanilla, earth and oak. The smooth finish features hints of citrus, pepper, caramel and herbs. DeLeón Extra Añejo is available at fine grocery and spirit stores Valleywide, and retails between $325 and $340.

DeLeón at a Glance Produced in the highlands of Purisima del Rincon in Mexico, which literally translates to the “purest of the corner,” DeLeón boasts the only tequila-producing facility in the world with three natural spring wells dedicated to one source. The result? The distillery has the purest water levels in the entire country of Mexico. In addition, each of the brand’s signature tequilas are made from the finest 100% Highland Blue Weber agave sourced from the rich earth of the Los Altos region of Jalisco, Mexico. Hand-selected at harvest for high quality and peak ripeness, the brand’s plants yield perfectly sweet piñas, giving the tequila its abundant character and balance. n area just outside of Old Town Scottsdale is about to be home to an exciting new residential concept. Introducing Inspire on Earll, a $42 million dollar residential housing project that is breathing some new life into the area of Downtown Scottsdale. “There is a significant demand for new construction multifamily housing in Scottsdale,” says Rob Lyles, partner of Deco Communities, which is behind this new project. Inspire on Earll will be located at 7300 E. Earll Drive, and will bring together a great location with some great amenities, including a state-of-theart fitness facility, pool, spa, dog park, and more. Inspire on Earll will also offer homebuyers a number of lifestyle options, including easy access to sports and recreation, arts and entertainment, shopping, top restaurants, and outdoor walking and biking trails. Within walking distance is Scottsdale Stadium, Old Town Scottsdale Farmer’s Market, and in case of emergency, Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center. According to Deco Communities Partner Pat Watts, “Inspire on Earll is exciting because it is the first residential project of its kind bringing brand new, high quality, contemporary, and affordable condominiums to a highly desirable part of Downtown Scottsdale. The area is undergoing a hip revival and becoming an urban destination where people want to live, work and play.” Condominiums in the building will offer several different floor plans, catering to a variety of lifestyles and tastes. Plans SO SCOTTSDALE! |

will start at 800-square-foot one-bedroom units and build up to a 2,100-square-foot two-bedroom, split-master place with a den. There will be open floor plans, gas appliances and modern finishes throughout, offering contemporary looks and modern amenities. “We are thrilled to be the first to bring brand new, architecturally unique residences offering contemporary styling and modern amenities to an exciting, emerging neighborhood that has its own identity unique from Old Town and the rest of Scottsdale,” says Lyles. Once all is said and done, this new project will bring 97 new condominiums to an area that hasn’t seen a whole lot of new construction in recent years. So, this will be a welcome sight for those looking to grow with the area. Watts says, “Our development philosophy focuses on forward-thinking contemporary design that strongly resonates with the Scottsdale homebuyer. We’re completely inspired by the energy of Downtown Scottsdale, and quality residential is the one thing that’s missing from the area. With both of our Downtown Scottsdale projects (ENVY Residences and Inspire on Earll), our goal is to elevate each district by bringing essential residential and people to truly create a neighborhood where people experience a true live, work and play lifestyle.” Inspire on Earll is scheduled to be completed in late 2016. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
