Q: Is there anything that can

be done to actually prevent the skin from aging? Many people believe that aging skin is inevitable, but with simple lifestyle changes and today’s technology, we can actually prevent the skin from aging. The signs of aged skin include dullness, fine lines, wrinkles, and brown & red spots. Many factors contribute to the aging of skin including our expressions like squinting, smiling and frowning, as do external factors like smoking, sun exposure and even the foods that we eat. Proven to slow the aging clock, the Forever Young treatment is one of the most exciting technologies. This treatment addresses fine lines, brown and red spots and the overall tone and texture of the skin. Scientific evidence shows that by having regular maintenance treatments, the skin rejuvenates and skin aging is delayed. Forehead lines and crows feet see great improvement with the use of Botox or Dysport. By inhibiting muscle movement, lines and wrinkles are no longer able to form and your appearance is less tired and refreshed. Topical medical grade skin care products can prevent skin aging. SPF is the first line of defense to preserve your skin. To be effective, you need to wear at least an SPF 30 daily with ingredients that include zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Prescription Retinoids will also prevent wrinkles by boosting your collagen production. Lastly, cut down on sugar! Sugar binds to collagen and elastin, making it degrade faster then normal. That means more wrinkles. Furthermore, it makes the skin more susceptible to sun damage.

YOU ASKED!

Dr. Gino Tutera, SottoPelle® founder answers your questions.

SottoPelle®… Helping Parkinson’s Disease patients enjoy a better quality life Q: What is the connection between hormones and Parkinson’s disease (PD)? A: According to the American Neurological Association, estrogen may play a role in the severity of PD symptoms. Sex hormones serve a critical role beyond reproduction in overall health, and are directly related to neuromuscular and cognitive function hormones. These hormones have been shown to reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. The latest research demonstrates the relationship between PD, low testosterone and estrogen levels. This association is seen with other neurological disorders such as Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Q: How can SottoPelle® help Parkinson’s patients? A: Hormonal balance helps to restore the body to its normal physiological state. Many PD patients using SottoPelle® Therapy are experiencing improved neuromuscular function. SottoPelle® hormonal therapy uses estradiol pellets to support dopamine production and decreases inflammation in the female brain, as does testosterone in the male brain.

Q: What are Parkinson’s patients experiencing using SottoPelle®? A: Early-onset PD patients are experiencing significant improvement in their quality of life with SottoPelle® including: more energy and vitality, reduced progression of symptoms, better stamina and motivation to exercise, improved balance and coordination, increased mobility and flexibility, better cognitive function, reduced tremor, better assimilation of medications and a greater sense of well-being. This helps patients become more functional, offering them more vitality and energy to keep active.

“Wow! I feel like a new woman since starting SottoPelle®. If a person like me (diagnosed with PD in 2008) can feel this energetic again – then anyone can! I feel more youthful, alert and alive!” —Patti Meese, SottoPelle® Parkinson’s patient since 2013; Michael J. Fox Foundation Genetics Ambassador; Parkinson’s Action Network State Director, NC

“SottoPelle® is making a significant difference in how I feel every day. It’s an important addition to my Parkinson’s protocol.” —Brian Baehr, SottoPelle® PD patient since 2013; Founder, Baehr Challenge for Parkinson’s Research, Phoenix, AZ

O

ne of my favorite events of the year is Celebrity Fight Night. It’s the way an event should be—an amazing time, and for a great cause. I’ve attended the past few years, and each year has been just as incredible as the previous one–and this year promises to continue the tradition. Take, for example, the headliners. This year’s emcee is, once again, the superstar Reba McEntire, and the performers include such stellar acts as Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Josh Groban, and Ronnie Dunn. For this issue, I was lucky enough to speak with Blake about his involvement with the event. As he explains, “It sounded like a no-brainer to me. It’s a great cause and it sounds like a great time.” He’s right on all fronts. Fight Night benefits the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute (the event is presented in honor of Muhammad Ali), as well as numerous other charities. In addition to Fight Night, Blake also spoke with me about the other things on his busy schedule—like filming The Voice. And I love what he had to say about his wife, Miranda Lambert. You can read the story on page 48. Blake and Miranda might be very much in love, but if you’re still looking for your soulmate, we’ve profiled some of the Most Eligible Singles who are here in town in our feature on page 53. Maybe one of them is your other half? I had a lot of fun putting together this issue. I hope you enjoy reading it. And I hope to see you at Celebrity Fight Night on March 28. A great event for a great cause!

I love the new mirrorless cameras because they have shed so much weight and kept the same image quality, the new electronic viewfinders have really grown on me, and I prefer to shoot that way now over my older DSLR. I also really enjoy getting to meet new people and I love how each shoot is challenging in its own way.”

TOM BOLLINGER Sculptor, businessman, creative visionary BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

Tom Bollinger had an unusual childhood growing up in the late 1950s. He and his four brothers were among a handful of Anglo children on Lakota and Oglala Sioux Native American reservations in North Dakota, where his parents were teachers. Those early years defined Bollinger in ways he didn’t realize at the time.

up close “All of us involved in the creative process bring something of our own perspective,” explains Bollinger. “I have a unique perspective because of the closeknit tribal view of the world that sees humans as part of the earth, not separate from it.” That balance between human and earth is part of everything Bollinger now creates.

Looking for a place to fit in Bollinger never quite fit in growing up in North Dakota, but when his father was named superintendent of the Phoenix Indian School and moved the family to Phoenix, the teenage Bollinger realized he didn’t fit into life in Central Phoenix, either. The sophomore attended Central High School. “It was a bit of a culture shock,” says Bollinger. “When you grew up like Tom Sawyer, orienting yourself to the sun, moon and stars like I did, living in an urban area was difficult.” Bollinger, who now lives in Scottsdale, says it was a challenge just to learn a new culture. He gives an example of how Anglos speak to each other and show respect compared to Native Americans. “In Anglo culture, you are taught to look people in the eye,” he explains. “In Native culture, it is just the opposite. You show respect by looking away.”

Soon after graduating from high school, Bollinger headed back to North Dakota and his parents’ alma mater, Dickinson State University. Little did he know that taking an art class his first year would dramatically change his life.

Discovering art Bollinger informed his parents, after he completed his first art class, that he wanted to change his major from business to art. His parents “strongly encouraged” him to stick with a business degree. Bollinger finished college with a B.A. in business administration and a B.F.A. in sculpture. But, college had introduced him to a new world. “As a child, I wasn’t aware that there were museums and art galleries,” he explains. “Traveling to Minneapolis would have been like going to Paris or the moon or Mars,” he laughs. But all that changed in college. “We took field trips to Chicago and Minnesota, and it opened my eyes. I realized people actually made a living from art.” Bollinger fell in love with sculpture and creating art with his hands. “Sculpture used to be considered the highest form of art,” he says. Today, he continues to hold that connection to his work close. “The artist’s hands, manipulation of form, and materials, are still important [despite all the technological advances],” says Bollinger. He has dedicated his life to not only creating art, but also to sharing his passion with others.

An artistic life Bollinger’s work has been included in shows around the world, such as flanking the entry to the International Concept Art Fair/Sea Fair in Miami Port, Fla. during the week of the prestigious Art Basel Miami, and at the El Paseo Invitational Sculpture Exhibition in Palm Desert, Calif. (which is known as the Rodeo Drive of the desert), and his pieces can be found at places such as the Tempe Center for the Arts here in Arizona. He had tried the gallery circuit for a bit, but selling large sculptures in galleries is not always an easy task. After running New Mexico’s famed Shidoni Foundry, he took the

proceeds from a public art commission in Albuquerque and returned to Tempe, where he purchased Arizona Bronze Fine Arts Foundry in 1997. Renamed Bollinger Atelier, the Tempe foundry is now internationally recognized for its commitment to creating exceptional work for some of the art world’s superstars, including Donald Baechler, Thomas Houseago, Tom Sachs, Ed Mell, Hector Ruiz, and Will Bruder. “You have to have a vision that’s bigger than your community,” explains Bollinger. “As an artist, you strive to put yourself into your work.” Bollinger believes it is important to share that love of art, of the craftsmanship behind the vision, with today’s art students. Bollinger Atelier has an internship program with senior-level B.F.A. sculpture students at Arizona State University. The students work at the foundry for a semester, get paid for their work, and get college credit for the hands-on experience. Six of those past interns now work full-time at the shop. Bollinger believes his unique background has given his art a close connection to the earth. “We are creative beings and it’s our obligation to be creative–it’s what we do. I think about my relationship with the universe, with the planet, and the responsibility that relationship entails. In my work, I have gravitated toward connections rather than differences. But what are those connections? This is the central question I explore.” Bollinger Atelier is a family affair. His wife, Kim, a jeweler, works part-time at the foundry. His daughter, Chequamegon Bollinger-Orme, a marketing professional and fashion designer, works at the foundry. His son-in-law, Charles Orme, an artist himself, also works at the foundry. “My passion is sculpture,” says Bollinger, who hopes to pass the daily work at the foundry on to his skilled staff in the future. “I want to focus more on my personal art.” To learn more about Tom Bollinger and the work he has available for sale or to commission art, visit www.tombollingersculpture.com. Problem Hair - How Color Can Solve Common Issues Rodney Gentry, Full-service Designer and Hair Color Specialist, Sachi Studios

Rodney Gentry, the full-service designer and hair color specialist based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, AZ, uses his color expertise to ensure that his clients always look their best. Over the years he has encountered all manner of hair-related issues, which he addresses through personalised consultations and treatment programs for each and every client. Here expert colorist Rodney shares his hints and tips on how to use color to overcome some of the most common hair problems that clients face. I’m going gray – how can I cover it up while still retaining a natural look? Rodney Gentry: Going gray is a natural process, but one which many men and women find distressing. Over time, the body produces less pigment to color the hair, which leads to increasing numbers of hairs turning from their usual color to gray and then white. As women tend to color their hair more than men and thus automatically mask the appearance of any gray, I find it is often my male clients who notice their gray hairs first. In the modern business world, where youthful looks are (rightly or wrongly) associated with getting ahead, many men find the appearance of their first gray hairs worrying. However, there is absolutely nothing to stress about. By using a range of coloring processes that make use of enzymes to help nurture the hair while coloring it, I ensure that any gray hairs can be quickly and expertly covered up, using a dye that matches the hair’s original color. The result is a flawless, natural look that leaves men feeling instantly more confident. The same process is also used for my female clients, though they tend to be more adventurous with how they choose to cover their gray. From full color treatments to highlights and lowlights, I use a range of fantastic color treatments to ensure that women always look more youthful and feel better about themselves when they leave the salon. You mention the use of enzymes as part of the coloring process – what are they and how do they work? Rodney Gentry: Natural enzymes are specialized proteins produced by the cells of living organisms. They accelerate chemical reactions without taking part in the reactions themselves. Unlike traditional, peroxide-based hair colorants, which well the cuticle until it bursts, creating unsightly hair damage, enzyme-based products nurture the hair while coloring it. Hair products such as those from leading color specialists RENE FURTERER PARIS, which I use exclusively at Sachi Studios, incorporate enzymes in order to achieve better color for the hair in a fraction of the usual time. They work by spreading the cuticle scales to enable the color to be inserted directly into the hair shaft. The process is kind to the hair and scalp and provides a true color, which holds fast because there is no oxidation process. To my mind, the use of natural enzymes in hair products is one of the most important developments in hair colorants in recent decades.

SS_30_35Trendsetters_Mar15.indd 34

2/23/15 4:28 PM

They allow men and women to color their hair as often as they like, with products that actually care for the hair rather than making it brittle and damaged. Clients should always check before having a color treatment which kind of products their colorist is using – and if it’s not an enzyme-based product, find a new colorist! I’m frazzled by my frizzy hair – could a color treatment help me? Rodney Gentry: Frizzy hair can be a big problem for those with wavy or curly hair, though of course it can affect straight hair too. Over-processing, over-brushing, heated styling appliances, lack of moisture, atmospheric conditions – the causes of frizz are numerous and many of my clients want to know what they can do to combat it. Clients are often surprised when I explain that a color process can help to combat frizz, as with enzyme-based products the hair can be treated at the same time that it is colored. The hair is left deeply conditioned, with a natural healthiness and shine to it that will help to avoid the dreaded frizzy look. I often combine coloring with an intense conditioning masque for those clients who have frizz issues – RENE FURTERER PARIS conditioning products are particularly good for producing long-term nurturing and smoothing effects. How do you know which color process is right for each client? Rodney Gentry: I focus on providing a personalized service. I never double book appointments, so each client has plenty of time to discuss their hair issues – it’s all about the customer. During each consultation I consider the history of the client’s hair, including any previous treatments, as well as the current condition of the hair and any problems that the client is having. By taking the time to build up a picture of each client’s individual needs in this way, I can ensure that my service always provides exactly what they are looking for. I’m losing my hair – can coloring it help? Rodney Gentry: Losing your hair is something that can affect both men and women, though it’s more common in men. Many clients find it an extremely distressing process and seek to know how they can combat and cope with it. Hair loss can be both gradual and sudden. It can also centre on one particular area of the scalp or affect patches. Certain conditions, such as alopecia aerate, may see the hair grow back after a certain time, but with others the hair loss is permanent. Color treatments are one way in which hair loss can be tackled. The use of dark color treatments can make hair appear thicker, while

SS_30_35Trendsetters_Mar15.indd 35

the use of nurturing products can help to ensure maximum shine and thickness. Of course, any peroxide-based product should be strenuously avoided, as the goal is to ensure the hair’s health and not use anything which can risk causing damage to it. To find out more about how to tackle your individual hair issues through the application of a personalized coloring and treatment program, be sure to make your appointment with full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry today. A MODERN BOUTIQUE FOR PARENTS Stephanie Nguyen’s one-stopshop offers support for Valley moms and families BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

A

ll it took was witnessing a live birth for the first time in nursing school to make Stephanie Nguyen, founder and CEO of Modern Milk, to realize that women’s health was her life’s vocation. She began as a postpartum nurse, working in labor and delivery and high-risk antepartum. She later swapped the hospital setting for an office job as a nurse practitioner. After her own bundles of joy came into the world, Nguyen expanded her field into the specialty of breastfeeding. It was then that she realized the need for support. “I felt that if moms knew that there was a place they could go to receive professional care and advice about breastfeeding, that they would have a greater chance of meeting their breastfeeding goals.” And just like that, Modern Milk (13802 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste. 162, Scottsdale; 480.999.1585; www.modernmilk.com) was born. Modern Milk is hip, fun, and a one-stopshop for parents navigating parenthood. “We offer professional breastfeeding services, classes, and amazing products all in a fun, boutique-style setting. … I love the fact that I can help moms every day,” she says.

Etc.

How many children do you have? My husband, Fred, and I have two amazing daughters. Rilynn turns 4 this month, and Rachel is 15 months. What’s one piece of advice you would give to a new mom? If you plan on breastfeeding, take a breastfeeding class in your last trimester of pregnancy. Many people think that breastfeeding will come naturally, which isn’t necessarily the case. The more you can educate yourself about breastfeeding, the better experience you will have and the greater chance of success you will have. Being a mom is a full-time job! How do you do it all? I wouldn’t be able to do what I love without the continued support of family and friends. It also helps that my husband is just as much involved with the kiddos as I am. We are a team and we have to work together to be successful for our family and for our daughters. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

BREAKING THE CODE

Former video game developer launches a unique business BY GRETCHEN PAHIA

B

y the year 2020, there will be nearly one million unfilled coding jobs in America. That statistic struck a chord with David Dodge—and it’s what prompted him to create CodaKid, a fun, educational way to teach kids all about coding. CodaKid is a unique place that recently opened in Old Town Scottsdale, where students can take classes on coding. It is in this hi-tech studio where Dodge says kids get the chance to learn skills that will benefit them for years to come. “We want to turn interests into greater things. Kids who love video games are now using those platforms to learn amazing things like programming and other coding skills that can benefit them for a lifetime,” he explains. Dodge admits that while it has been a lot of work, he is having a blast. “Watching these kids learn is amazing. Some kids are naturally intimidated by code and they freeze up, but we are able to work with them, see them create, and watch their faces light up. It is really fun.” CodaKid (4254 N. Brown Ave., Scottsdale; 480.405.2734; www. codakid.com) currently offers classes for children ages 6 through those in eighth grade, but Dodge says he is looking to expand in the future.

Etc.

What is your favorite video game and why? Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2. This game incorporated the best of first-person shooters, light saber battles, and RPG-like problem-solving. I geeked out to this for more hours than I’d care to admit! What do you do in your free time when you aren’t teaching and coding? I am the father of an 18-month-old baby girl named Dylan, so am busy as can be having fun chasing her around. When I’m not spending time with the family, I play a lot of guitar and have become a hack golfer. Who were your heroes and inspirations growing up? I always looked up to Richard Branson, and dreamed of starting high-growth companies that were creative and fun. CodaKid is definitely the most fun that I’ve had in business so far. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Q: A:

I know sunscreen is crucial, but some give me an itchy rash. What are my options?

Sunscreen falls into two categories: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens are lighter formulations, but must be applied in advance. Physical sunscreens like zinc oxide work instantly, but are traditionally thicker and heavier – though this type of sunscreen is increasingly available in lighter formulas (even powders). Both are effective, but different; chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays, rendering them harmless, while physical sunscreens reflect rays so they cannot penetrate skin. It’s more common for people to have allergies to the chemical type, so if you’ve experienced irritation from sunscreen, try switching to the physical type. There are some great drugstore brands, and we carry premium lines such as Elta MD® and Colorescience®. We’re happy to help determine what type works best for you! Have a question you’d like to ask? little over a year ago, Gazelle Parsa (formerly known as Ghazaleh) reached her goal and became a business owner when she opened Gazelle Medical Spa & Aesthetics (www.gazellemedspa.com). It all began when she was working in sales at a skincare store in Kierland Commons 10 years ago, and decided that she wanted to learn more about the industry. Parsa continued her education and became an esthetician—but that still wasn’t enough. She went on to learn about laser treatments, permanent makeup, and more. After working in doctor’s offices practicing these skills, she decided it was time to become her own boss. Now, she does it all—the treatments, management, and marketing of her own business. On a workday you’ll typically find her in something comfortable, yet professional and fashionable. She loves to dress up and always has her hair and makeup done when she leaves the house. For brands, she gravitates towards Tory Burch and Michael Kors. Some of her favorite places to shop? Caché, Nordstrom Rack and Macy’s—or wherever she can find the best deal. In her free time, Parsa enjoys playing piano, dancing, cooking, and working out, as well as spending time with her fiancé and her daughter.

He works in commercial leasing and investment sales for Rein & Grossoehme Commercial Real Estate (www.rgcre.com), and has been with the company since the beginning of his career. In his free time Lively enjoys hiking, and is currently restoring a 1975 Ford Bronco. He takes a casual approach to his style on the weekends, and loves wearing 7 for all Mankind jeans. He typically hikes wearing Lululemon, and reps his Arizona State University gear. He also enjoys shopping at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Suitsupply at Scottsdale Quarter.

What are a few of your favorite trails to hike? I love to hike Pinnacle Peak Trail, due to how close it is to my house, and because I can run most of the trail, which gets my heart rate up better than Camelback. Sedona’s Soldier’s Pass is my favorite hiking trail in Arizona. What would be your dream car to restore? My dream car to restore would be a ’67 Ford Shelby GT500, with matching numbers. THE COUNTRY SUPERSTAR OPENS UP ABOUT EVERYTHING FROM KNOWING MIRANDA LAMBERT WAS “THE ONE,” TO WHETHER HE WOULD HAVE AUDITIONED FOR THE VOICE WHEN HE WAS STARTING HIS CAREER, TO HIS UPCOMING PERFORMANCE AT CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT THIS MONTH

2/23/15 10:14 PM

s crooner Blake Shelton has proven, he’s more than just a country superstar. He’s one of only two celebrity coaches to appear on every season of NBC’s The Voice; he’s shown his comedy chops on late night talk shows, as well as hosted Saturday Night Live this past January; and he’s devoted to helping causes—for example, Celebrity Fight Night, which is being held at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa on March 28.

“My friends Reba [McEntire] and Narvel Blackstock have been a part of it now for several years,” he says. “For as many years as I’ve known them they’ve talked about this event and what a great thing it is, and mostly, about what a great time they had when they do it. And so, this year, I got a call from Narvel, and he said, ‘Man, is there any way you’d come and be a part this thing? It’s for a great cause. And remember all those cool stories I had for you? Well, you gotta come see this thing.’” And so of course, Shelton said yes. “It sounded like a no-brainer to me. It’s for a great cause and it sounds like a hell of a good time, too.” Shelton is right on both counts—Celebrity Fight Night, which is presented in honor of Muhammad Ali, benefits the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute, as well as many other charities. In the past 20 years, Celebrity Fight Night has raised more than $100 million. As for the good time, the event is recognized as one of the nation’s elite charity events, and regularly attracts celebrities as both performers at the event, as well as attendees. In addition to Shelton, this year’s performers include Kelly Clarkson, Josh Groban, and Ronnie Dunn. Reba McEntire will return as the evening’s emcee for the 10th year, and 16-time Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer David Foster will serve as musical director for his 16th year.

Causes and Passion As he did with Celebrity Fight Night, Shelton jumps in when there’s a cause he identifies with. “I also help my wife as much as I can with her foundation, which is the MuttNation Foundation,” he explains. “It’s a dog rescue organization. Now she even has her own, what she calls, ‘Redemption Ranch,’ which is an animal shelter where we live, which is a no-kill shelter. She’s really passionate about it, and anything that she’s passionate about, I support her. So we do a lot of work with her foundation.” Shelton’s wife is, of course, fellow country superstar Miranda Lambert. The two met in 2005, and Shelton says that when he saw her, he just knew that she was the one. “I’ll never forget the first time I stood there and spoke to her for five or 10 minutes, and just was fascinated by her. I knew I was in trouble the first time I ever met her.” The pair was married in 2011, and though they both tour and play at events such as Celebrity

SS_48_51BlakeShelton_Mar15.indd 50

2/23/15 4:34 PM

Fight Night, they also make it a point to be home and spend time together. “Luckily we’re at a point in our careers where we can say no, and that’s good. That’s been really good for our relationship because we don’t have to be on the road 300 days a year anymore, and we’re just not going to do it, either way,” he says. “We need time together. We need time to be home. That’s what’s most important. As much as I love country music and I love performing and singing, nothing is more important to me than my wife and having some time with her.”

The Voice —Would He Have Auditioned?

I ALWAYS SAID MY ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO HAVE A CAREER LIKE GEORGE STRAIT, AND ALTHOUGH I HAVEN’T DONE THAT—AND NOBODY PROBABLY EVER WILL—THAT IS MY GOAL.

Of course, when Shelton is not spending time with Lambert, on tour, or performing at charity event, you’ll usually find him on set for The Voice, coaching aspiring singers. He takes his role seriously, and so far four of his mentees have been the overall winners out of the seven seasons. As for whether Shelton himself would have auditioned for the show if it was around when he was starting out, he admits he’s not sure. “I don’t know,” he says as he reflects on the question. “I go back and forth about that. I think I would have probably auditioned. I don’t know though that I could have handled the pressure the way these kids do. I still, to this day, I’ll have my moments where I’m just not as confident as I should be, especially when it comes to performing on live television. And these kids come out of nowhere, sometimes with absolutely no experience whatsoever, and they audition for this show, and the next thing you know they’re performing in front of 15 million people a night. That’s unbelievable to me. “I’ve always said I wished The Voice could have been around when I started so I could have cut a lot of wasted time out of those early years, you know, but the truth is I don’t know that I would have lasted very long on a show like that. I don’t think that I’m up to the level of talent and confidence that a lot these kids are that we see, and it blows my mind how good they are.”

The Early Years Shelton himself had always been fascinated by music. As a youngster, it was any genre—from rock ‘n’ roll to country–just as long as it was music. As he got older, he began to gravitate more toward country, perhaps, as he explains, because during the time he was learning to play guitar and sing, country was what was being played on the radio in Oklahoma, where he grew up, and so he was learning to play those songs. Music was a passion and gave him purpose, and was what drew him in since he was young. “It’s really the only thing I’ve put a lot of effort into, and all MARCH 2015 |

SS_48_51BlakeShelton_Mar15.indd 51

51

my heart, and tons of research. Nashville was my college. It was just all that I was ever able to even focus on.” If it wasn’t for music, he admits, “I’d probably be homeless! It wouldn’t have been good without country music for me.” Luckily, his combination of talent and charisma quickly drew a huge fan base, from the moment his first single, “Austin,” was released. In fact, the single spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs). Since then, Shelton has gone on to earn the loyalty of millions of die-hard fans, as well as numerous awards from organizations such as the Academy of Country Music Awards, the CMT Music Awards, the American Music Awards, the Grammy Awards, and more.

Heading to Arizona Although his tours take him all over, Shelton says he loves to spend time here in Arizona. When he’s not here for events such as Celebrity Fight Night, you’ll probably find him at his favorite spot in the Valley. “I love the infield of Cardinal’s stadium,” he says. “I’m the biggest die-hard Arizona Cardinals fan you’ll ever meet in your life. So anything to do with that stadium over there is probably my favorite place to be when I’m out in Arizona.”

Talking George Strait On Shelton’s website, he says, “I always said my ultimate goal is to have a career like George Strait, and although I haven’t done that—and nobody probably ever will—that is my goal.” When asked to elaborate regarding what he thinks he needs to do to have a career like Strait, he replies, “Well I need to live about 60 more years, I think! I don’t know. When you start talking about George Strait, you really are talking about one-of-a-kind. But I think what I mean by that is that I hope I’m still getting played on the radio and still about to go out and do some concerts and things when I’m 50-years-old, and my music is still touching people like his does. That’s what I would want. That would be my ultimate wish.” While there’s a pretty good chance Shelton’s music will still be played then, and that he will still be rocking the charts, in the meantime, you can catch him this month at Celebrity Fight Night here in town. “I just can’t wait to get there. It’s going to be a good time!” he says. For more information about Blake Shelton, visit www.blakeshelton.com. Q: You’ve put in a lot of hard work to gain such an amazing reputation in the real estate industry in the past ten years. Can you tell us a little about where you started? A: I started from the ground up! I was a Listing Coordinator and mentored by the #1 Top Producing real estate agent in Arizona. I managed more than a hundred listing files at any time. I would handle all incoming calls in relation to property we had listed for sale. During the week, I was in the office daily, hosting broker evening events, as well as holding open houses on the weekends.

Q: All that dedication has certainly paid off; you’ve become well-known for going the extra mile for your clients (in many cases, literally!). What do you do to help people who are interested in buying property outside of the Valley? A: Though I’m based in Scottsdale, with my primary area of expertise right here in the valley, I’ve also built up an exclusive network of Realtors, to provide a worldwide referral service. Based on a clients’ lifestyle, their interests and desired location, I match them with an accredited Realtor who specializes in property in an area they’re interested in – even internationally. For example, I recently referred a Scottsdale client to a Sotheby’s Los Cabos Realtor, to list a secondary residence in San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico. I’m available to travel to the location with the client and assist them through the process. I use this approach as a professional and personal service to my clients. Q: What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment as a Realtor? A: My biggest accomplishment is providing on an ongoing basis, the best service to my clients. Buying or selling a home is very personal and a major decision. It’s so important for me to see my clients completely satisfied with their purchase or sale transaction and pleased with my service! I recently sold a home in one day – before the sign was in the yard! Needless to say, the clients were thrilled! Q: What are some of your favorite things to do when you’re not working? A: I’ve lived in Arizona for twenty-four years and love it here! I hike Camelback Mountain three times a week. I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I also love to travel, and explore new places. Jennifer represents Buyers and Sellers in all areas and price points. Legos Done Wright

Wow. This LEGO model of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West is made with more than 200,000 pieces, took more than 600 hours to complete, and is the largest LEGO model of any Frank Lloyd Wright building ever made. The piece was created by Architectural LEGO Artist Adam Reed Tucker, who uses LEGO bricks to create artistic models of well-known structures. This one, his largest to date, measures a whopping 8 feet by 4 feet, and is made entirely of standard Lego parts. Want to see it for yourself? It’s on display at Taliesin West now through the end of April, and available to anyone who takes a tour of the property. 12621 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd., Scottsdale; www.franklloydwright.org.

EXPERIENCE

COUNTS!

Looking great may be easier than you think. “I’d really love to do something to improve my face and figure, but I”m afraid of the pain, the post operative nausea and of course the cost. Isn’t there a way that I can enhance my appearance without all the hassles of a major production?” The answer is a resounding YES! Dr Andrew Wolin has found a great way to maximize the safety of facial, breast and body procedures while minimizing the pain and the cost. By utilizing an enhanced form of local anesthesia as well as sedation by

specialists in ambulatory anesthesia, procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lifts, facelifts, rhinoplasties and liposuction can be done under a quick enhanced form of anesthesia and patients are be able to walk to their cars and go home after the procedure without nausea and pain. Part of the miraculous process is the use of a long acting local anesthetic at the conclusion of the procedure to give a 48 hour period of pain relief…no narcotic…no nausea. Patients have been raving about the experience and can’t believe they’ve ever had surgery any other way. “Dr Wolin told me that I could undergo a breast augmentation in less than one hour without general anesthetic and then get off the operating room table and walk to my car. When it actually happened, I was amazed. What a great experience.” (verified testimonial) Call our office and see if you are a candidate for this revolutionary approach to Plastic Surgical procedures. It’s as easy as going to your dentist and having dental implants done…maybe easier.

Dr. Andrew Wolin has been a leader in the plastic surgical community of Scottsdale since 1985, and his extensive years of experience benefit each patient. His top-notch reputation as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and for cutting-edge procedures draws patients from near and far. locations sell women’s shoes only, and for years, Green had heard requests from customers for her to carry men’s shoes and accessories—so that is exactly what the primary focus will be of this new location. There will be limited women’s shoe selections, but this particular Suburban Sole location was made with the man in mind. Green says the selection of shoes she puts in her stores is like nothing you will find around town, or even in other locations across the world. “For men, we carry some brands that are really difficult to find, not seen in department stores here or anywhere, and which are only carried in fact by a few retailers in the U.S.” The reason, she says, is simple: “Our quality is top-notch and people notice. Our clientele keeps coming back time and time again. We see winter visitors come back year after year, bringing in their families, including the next generation. We don’t have everything for everyone, but we are okay with that.” Suburban Sole MAN is located at Market Street at DC Ranch, 20789 N. ne-of-a-kind and unique. That is how one might describe the detailed shoes you’ll find inside the new Suburban Sole MAN store which recently opened at Market Street at DC Ranch. Entrepreneur and owner Cindy Green has more than 25 years of experience in the footwear industry, and is excited about the opening of this third location in Arizona. “I’ve been in the shoe business for decades,“ says Green. “I love the people, I love the industry, and I think people in this industry are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.” Green also owns and operates Suburban Sole stores at Mercado at Scottsdale Ranch and another storefront in Fountain Hills. Inside the store, you’ll find shoes that aren’t your typical offerings. There are many specialty brands, including Fly London, Pikolinos, Icon, Romika and Emu, just to name a few. Specialty and unique shoes are culled from around the world, from nations including Israel, Spain and Portugal, and the beautiful designs are handpicked specifically for Suburban Sole customers. very year on March 17, locals celebrate the promise of spring by donning a splash of green and raising a glass—and a fork—to all things Irish. Get in on the merriment and don’t miss your one chance a year to down a green beer or pinch a stranger. Eat, drink and be Irish at one of these local pub-style destinations.

Home of the award-winning Four-Cut Blend Burger—short rib, sirloin, chuck and brisket blend—Kelly’s offers a dose of sophistication to the traditional pub menu and atmosphere. Chandeliers hang from the ceiling while billiards and darts give the air a playful vibe. The menu boasts a variety of eclectic fare, from the Pork Wings appetizers to elevated pub favorites like Fish ‘n’ Chips and Beer Mac ‘N’ Cheese. ST. PATRICK’S DAY, PUBSTYLE Raise a pint to the luck o’ the Irish at these pub-style watering holes BY LISA KASANICKY

Skeptical Chymist Don’t let the name throw you. The Irish restaurant and pub got the moniker from a book written by Irishman Robert Boyle in 1627, which is now considered the cornerstone of modern day chemistry. A nod to authentic Irish cuisine is sprinkled throughout the menu here. Start with the hand-cut Pub Fries with a side of Jameson maple sauce, or dig into a Belfast Burger, Real Lamb Shepherd’s Pie, or Corned Beef & Cabbage. Round out your visit with Baileys Bread & Butter Pudding or another round of Oatmeal Stouts. 15688 N. Pima Road, Ste. #C6, Scottsdale; 480.609.8677; www.skepticalchymist.com. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

The menu at The Upton was inspired by the comfort foods seen in the travels of our owners. We didn’t want any restrictions when it came to the food, we wanted to cook undefined American cuisine. The menu to me is simple yet interesting, and is a great mix of dishes that are sharable and eat well. WHAT ARE YOUR TWO FAVORITE DISHES THERE?

My two favorite dishes on the menu are the Vegan Miso Ramen and the Classic French Bistro Steak Frites. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A CHEF?

I first knew I wanted to be a chef when I was about 21. I worked in several restaurants for a few years and did every odd job on earth. I was [then] told by my peers that I had to quit and go to college or go buy some decent knives and move to the city where the top restaurants were. After realizing that knives were more fun than a desk job, I got some sweet Japanese steel and never looked back. THE ONE INGREDIENT YOU PROBABLY USE MOST IS:

One ingredient I use the most in the kitchen would have to be rice wine vinegar. I love pickling things. ANY COOKING TIPS YOU CAN SHARE?

Cooking tip? Invest in a great blender! WHERE WOULD WE MOST LIKELY FIND YOU WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT THE RESTAURANT?

When I’m not at the restaurant you can find me riding around town on my old café racer—I have a soft spot for old motorcycles. IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF, YOU’D PROBABLY BE:

If I wasn’t a chef I would probably be a beer brewer or winemaker. The Upton is open for happy hour, dinner and Sunday brunch. 7216 E. Shoeman Lane, Scottsdale; 480.991.6887; www. theuptonaz.com.

ROK ON, AND ROK HARD

ure, the martinis we’re used to in America are great. But when you’re ready for something different, take a walk on the wild side with this drink, the ROK Hard. A fruity and refreshing cocktail, it is made with muddled lemons, Soju, sukryuju (a Korean pomegranate red wine) and cranberry juice, then topped with Sprite and decorated with a lemon wedge. “We wanted to make a Korean version of a martini that is easy to drink and consists of Korean liquor that people don’t really know about,” explains B.K Kim, the general manager at ROK Social House, where the drink is served. “Korean liquors are mostly served by the bottle, but by making the cocktails, people can experience different kinds of Korean liquors.” In fact, ROK Social House showcases the cuisine, drinking culture and music of the modern day Korean culture. Want to grab a bite to eat? While the ROK Hard ($10; $8 during social hour) is fruity, it’s not overly sweet, so it would pair best with “something salty and cheesy, such as our K-Sadilla, Korean Quesadilla, Gogi Tots or Gogo Nachos,” says Kim. “It is also very good to just drink by itself just like a red wine before or after the meal.” 7419 E. POWER POWDERS

Put a little muscle behind your spring cleaning routine BY LISA KASANICKY

S

PETER THOMAS ROTH CAMU CAMU POWER C X 30 VITAMIN C BRIGHTENING CLEANSING POWDER

As the name implies, this highly concentrated exfoliating cleanser covers all the bases. The potent Amazonian superfruit, camu camu berry, delivers 30 times more vitamin C than an orange—leaving skin bright and firm while diminishing the appearance of lines and uneven skin tone. Baltic amber exfoliates clogged pores, while bamboo and rice powder gently cleans. $45 at www.peterthomasroth. com and select Sephora stores.

topping cellular build-up in its tracks, exfoliating facial powders are the newest superheroes of radiant skin. Part topical exfoliator, part cleanser, and part fairy dust, the latest formulations are packed with innovative and highly effective ingredients. Plus, you can easily integrate one into your daily routine and customize the experience to your needs. Add more water to your powder for a light, daily cleanse or less for a denser, more exfoliating experience. You can even mix the powder in with your own daily gel or oil cleanser for the best of both worlds. Either way, the beauty of this fresh crop of grime-fighters is that in powder form, they last forever. And more good news: these no-spill powder formulas make the perfect travel companion. Here are six that are hard to resist.

BAREMINERALS EXFOLIATING TREATMENT CLEANSER

Used for centuries to sustain a youthful complexion in Eastern cultures, Japanese exfoliating powders are traditionally made from dried bean grains and rice bran. The powder is then transformed into a paste when mixed with oil or water. Boscia (pronounced b-sha) took the traditional formulation a step further by drying the grains and then coating them in antioxidant-rich Tsubaki oil. The result is a gently exfoliating cleanser that balances, nourishes and protects skin. $36 at www.boscia. com and select Sephora stores.

AMARTE DAILY EXFOLIPOWDER

This two-in-one wonder wash uses a refined, plant-based exfoliant to buff away dead skin cells and impurities. A blend of purified nanosulfur and arbutin work together to brighten, exfoliate, purify and calm skin, while the antioxidant compound Genistein helps prevent DNA damage. $37 at www.amarteskincare.com.

The science behind this bottle is mindboggling. Formulated with BareMineral’s proprietary RareMinerals ActiveSoil Complex, the powder delivers 72 skin-renewing macro and micro minerals extracted from dense soils around the world. Colloidal oatmeal and natural rice powder sooth skin, while yucca extract gives this power powder a frothing action when activated with water. $26 at www. bareescentuals.com and select Ulta stores.

JOSIE MARAN ARGAN EXFOLIATING CLEANSING POWDER

Finely crushed shells from the argan nut mingle with rice powder to refine and brighten the complexion. Natural antioxidants, including tea tree, ginkgo biloba and green tea, team up to battle blemishes and blackheads while balancing and renewing skin. Activate the powder with water or with Josie’s cult classic Argan Cleansing Oil for a creamier, luxury spa experience. $40 at www.josiemarancosmetics.com and select Sephora stores.

BLISSLABS ACTIVE 99.0 ANTI-AGING SERIES REFINING POWDER CLEANSER

A fusion of the science of spa, this professional-grade treatment banishes dead skin without sapping skin of moisture. Natural scrubbing agents polish away dullness while arbutin works to reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone. Loaded with hyaluronic acid, the cleanser gives skin a final hydration boost. $60 at www.blissworld.com and Bliss Spa at the W Scottsdale Hotel, 877.862.5477.

he hottest new auto craze is the subcompact sport utility vehicle class, with vehicles like Nissan Juke, Buick Encore, Subaru XV Crosstrek and others experiencing skyrocketing sales, up a whopping 55 percent last year, and climbing. With sales already up 41 percent, Jeep has introduced its own subcompact SUV—the all-new Renegade. Smaller and cheaper than the Jeep Cherokee, the boxy Renegade looks a bit quirky, with a character that is lovable without being cute (thankfully). Strong DNA immediately identifies it as a Jeep: the upright stance, flat windshield, searchlight headlamps, trademark seven slot grille, trapezoidal wheel arch from the original 1941 Jeep, and taillights

that extend from the body, similar to those on the Wrangler. There’s also an X on the taillamps, a design that comes from a World War II gas can, which was stamped to make the can stronger. Klaus Busse, Chrysler Group’s head of interior design, says it’s one of many Easter eggs—unobtrusive art elements featuring historical images related to the Jeep brand—that are hidden throughout the vehicle. We won’t tell you where all of them are, but look for a Jeep grille, a topographic map of Moab, and other hidden design embellishments and fun surprises. The interior is well designed with supportive seats, big windows for excellent visibility, intuitive switchgear, an excellent Uconnect infotainment interface, and the optional “My Sky” removable roof panels over the front and rear seats. The Renegade is available in four models: Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk. Jeep put the “Trail Rated” badging on the Renegade, which is their certification that it’s capable enough to traverse some of the most difficult off-road trails in the world. I tested the Renegade on the trails of Hollister Hills, Calif., where it handled the rocks, mud and off-road difficulties with ease. There are two available engines, but you’ll want the 2.4-liter turbo (180-horsepower) mated to the nine-speed automatic transmission. The 1.4-liter turbo (160-horsepower) with a six-speed manual might be a sporty choice for some, but not me. Overall, Jeep wanted the new Renegade to be fun, capable, userfriendly and authentic. We think, “Mission accomplished.” Jeep will sell boatloads of them on styling and price alone. PINHOLE GUM REJUVENATION

BEFORE

A

dental breakthrough can now correct receding gums without painful cutting and stitches – or the need to take time off work for recovery. Experts say the newly developed pinhole gum rejuvenation is quick, painless and can be done in the time it takes to eat lunch. Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang of Scottsdale's SC Dentistry is now offering the instant transformation of the defective gum line which will enable thousands of people achieve a healthy and beautiful smile immediately, virtually pain free and with no stitches and no downtime. Gum recession is the loss of gum tissue along the gum line. This can occur as a result of periodontal disease, the natural aging process or bad teeth brushing habits. When gum recession occurs the root structure of the tooth becomes exposed, meaning tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gum line and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness. Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation is done by Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang numbing the gum tissue with a local anesthetic. Then a tiny entry point the size of a ballpoint pen tip is made above or below the teeth

being treated. Then, Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang passes specialized instruments carefully under the gum tissue to reposition it to cover the recessed area. Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang will then pass tiny collagen strips through the opening and insert them under the gum. The strips keep the tissue in place until the patients body produces new collagen to fix the receding gums. This revolutionary method replaces the old painful technique where tissue would have to be removed from the roof of the mouth and then be grafted into the area where the gum had moved away from the tooth. This was very painful, and consisted of stitches followed by two to three weeks of recovery time with pain medicine. The results were sometimes hit or miss. ove wine? Imagine creating your own wine with grapes that are impossible to get as a consumer. Imagine producing your own ultra-premium, private label cabernet sauvignon. Imagine the experience of becoming a true Napa vintner—without paying millions for a winery. You can actually do all that. Only 1.3 percent of all the wines produced in the Napa Valley are from the Mount Veeder Appellation. Now, the Mount Veeder Magic Vineyards, located in the mountains of the Mount Veeder Appellation, is offering a unique experience to select guests—the opportunity to create a barrel’s worth of your own boutique and exclusive cabernet sauvignon. The vineyard (fun fact: it has appeared in two films—Black Rain and A Walk in the Clouds) is set on 80 acres, with 16 acres planted to grapes, and all sustainably and hand-farmed. The experience begins with grapes that are impossible to get as a consumer. After aging and refining them in French Oak barrels, the finished product is 288 bottles (24 cases) of an ultra-premium, limitedproduction cabernet, complete with your custom label. Karen Crouse, the owner, will take you through the process, from grape to bottle. The naturally low yield and highly concentrated fruit is hand-farmed, handpicked, and handcrafted. Each bottle is

hand labeled, which is rare in the wine industry. Although other companies may offer bulk wine with your name on it, this is a truly premium wine-making experience. Crouse’s passion for what she does and the obvious love of her vines is contagious. With a sophisticated Fortune 100 corporation background, her Southern hospitality, and her wild yet feminine boots, she will melt your heart and make you feel like her only client. When you visit, she will share a barrel tasting of her current vintage(s). If you are up for a rugged adventure, she will take you through the rolling hills of her magical vineyard, showing you what great care and attention to detail she puts into getting the grapes from her vines to your bottles. “This is one of the most personal experiences my clients will have in their lives. My favorite step in the process is working with them to create their labels. I enjoy being a part of designing a label that imparts something significant in their world,” she says. “This is a truly bespoke experience, and likely not something any one they know already has.” The winery is located at 3379 Solano Ave., Ste. 220, Napa, Calif. $20,000 per barrel (the finished product is 288 bottles of finished wine). 866.750.2091 or www. mountveedermagic.com.

LONDON IN THE SPRING A perfect destination BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

PHOTOS COURTESY OF VISIT LONDON

ondon is a bustling city filled with world-class shopping, high-end hotels, unforgettable theatre, some of the world’s best museums, and some of Europe’s best cuisine, easily making it one of the world’s most popular destinations.

Finding a Hotel in London London is filled with exceptional luxury accommodations, including The Ritz, The Savoy and The Lanesborough, but for a truly unique, luxury British experience, try The Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge (www. capitalhotel.co.uk). The Capital is a five-star boutique property on Basil Street, less than a block from Harrods and a five-minute walk to the designer shops on Sloane Street,

Hyde Park, and the Knightsbridge Tube Station. The hotel has 49 rooms and suites, a gourmet dining room, a cozy bar, and serves an elegant afternoon tea (opt for the champagne with your tea). From your hotel, you are a short walk to Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Hyde Park is ideal for a lazy afternoon picnic or bike ride. You’re also about 10 minutes from the Victoria & Albert Museum (www.vam.ac.uk).

Shopping in London The legendary Harrods is at the end of the block from The Capital. This massive store, with seven floors on 4.5 acres, is filled with every imaginable shop. Don’t miss the food halls on the ground floor—and be sure to pick up some of the famed French Ladurée macarons. There are international designers such as Dior, Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Chanel; luxury home goods including Fendi Casa; the Toy Kingdom; and shoes by Jimmy Choo, Prada and Louboutin. If you want to unwind after that long flight, book a treatment at Harrods Urban Retreat (www.urbanretreat.co.uk) on the fifth floor. Harvey Nichols, another major department store that was once a favorite of Princess Diana, is about five minutes the opposite direction from the hotel. There are six floors of fashion, beauty, shoes, two MediSpas, a gourmet restaurant, a wine shop, and a food market. London’s most famous shopping street is Sloane Street. Also about five minutes from The Capital, it is lined with designer shops as Dior, Prada, Chanel and Hermès. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

A trip to London wouldn’t be complete without taking in some of the iconic sights—but pick a few and don’t try to see everything in one visit. The Shard (www.theviewfromtheshard. com) is Western Europe’s tallest building, offering 360-degree views around London. The new View from The Shard experience takes you up to Level 69, where you can see for more than 40 miles across London. Brave visitors can opt to continue to the open-air deck on Level 72. The Coca-Cola London Eye is a fun experience. It is lovely to get off at the Westminster Tube Station in the shadow of Big Ben and walk across the Westminster Bridge over the River Thames to the giant wheel. You can purchase tickets in advance online at www. londoneye.com. A great experience is to book the 40-minute London Eye River Cruise with your London Eye entry.

Experiencing Royal London and Everyday London Check out the royals with the Royal London Tour, which you can book through www. visitlondon.com. For £61 ($93), you get a three-hour guided tour of London with a visit to Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, and entry into Buckingham Palace. During your visit to London, be sure to wander the back streets and markets. Pop into a neighborhood pub for a pint and traditional fish and chips. Ride a double decker bus. Picnic in the park. Even a casual stroll turns into an adventure.

ou’re a responsible consumer; you shop local whenever possible and seek out small businesses to support. You’d even grow all your own vegetables and raise your own chickens if you had the time. If you lack a green thumb or the desire to wake up to the sound of chickens frolicking in your backyard, there is one place where you can go to find some of the best local vendors all in one place. A farmers market offers local vendors the opportunity to get their products in front of curious consumers in a relaxing environment without all the stress and red tape of a brick-and-mortar location. There are, however, several vendors that participate in markets that do have physical locations, but those owners will be the first to tell you that there is a different vibe at a market; a sense of community and a gathering of like-minded consumers.

THE DETAILS ON TEATAILS

The new cocktail trend? Tea Peach Bellini Punch

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

“T

ea is an amazingly versatile beverage,” says Chris Sossaman, a local tea educator and founder of TeaRoyalty, an Arizona purveyor of fine loose leaf teas that recently launched a cocktail-inspired line available Valleywide. But, while the idea of these uniquely flavored teas like Peach Bellini, Pink Champagne, Mighty Mojito, Royal Icewine and Piña Colada Green sounds delicious, can actual tea be used as an ingredient in a cocktail itself? Yes! According to Sossaman, the basic guideline in creating great “TeaTails” is to start with a good loose-leaf tea, and then simply add something sweet, something sour, and a spirit. “Voilà, instant party,” says Sossaman, who shares some popular local TeaTails from Valley menus, as well as some recipes to try at home.

No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
