TELL

Every June, we put together a “man issue,” and when I tell people about this theme, I often feel that I need to explain why we don’t also do an annual women’s issue. The reasoning is pretty straightforward – it’s because the content of every other month skews more feminine. For example, June is likely the only time you’ll find articles featuring men’s spa treatments (page 76) or a guys’ getaway (page 102). So, men, this one is for you. As an editor, themed issues like this are always extra fun. They give you a scope in which you can let your creativity soar. You’ll find the best places in Scottsdale for dishes that are oh-so-meaty (page 108) and learn about the top-tier whiskies in which to wash them down (page 104). Prefer doing your own culinary handiwork? Check out an all-new smoker fitting for both grill masters and newbies (page 93). Beyond food and beverage, stay entertained at the Valley’s first motorsports country club (page 64), at a custom car show (page 63), or at a slew of guy hangouts (page 78) like those where you can lounge in a cigar bar or take a distillery tour. And if the upcoming Father’s Day holiday on June 16 has you fumbling for gifts, you might just find the perfect solution with beachwear (page 88), golf gear (page 90), cocktail accessories (page 86), or a state-of-the-art timepiece (page 83). To further celebrate fathers, our feature spotlights men at five Valley-based companies who go from desk time at work to dad duty at home. At the heart of their stories is the inspiration and motivation they found through their own families and a desire to set an example for their kids. Learn about their various industries and how they got to where they are today on page 36. With that, I wish a very happy Father’s Day to all the dads and grandads. And men, enjoy your issue. ll the best, A Chelsea Young Editor-in-Chief chelsea@richmanmediagroup.com Instagram: @young_chelsea onnect with us! FAMILY MATTERS

Dedicated dad Lorrie Henderson works to strengthen Valley families through social and medical services

Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad. With children ranging in age from 11 to 22, Lorrie Henderson, Ph.D., MBA, LCSW, is not only a proud dad five times over, but works to ensure all Arizona children have the chance to learn and grow in a safe, supportive environment.

“My life, however, did not start out with the word ‘safe’ top of mind,” says Henderson, a Calgary native who initially intended to make football his life’s work. The high school star moved from Canada to California in the early 1980s to play college football in Fresno.

So Scottsdale! June ‘19

21

Pulse UP CLOSE “I ended up back in Canada before I graduated, earning a chance to play in the Canadian Junior Football League,” says Henderson, who was signed to the Canadian Football League in 1983. However, in 1985, he had a series of injuries to his knees and shins that forced him to prematurely retire. Faced with building a new life, he moved from Canada to Florida – where his mother and younger brother lived at the time – to complete his college education. But not before doing a life-changing favor. “While still in Canada, a friend asked me to speak to a group of young men and women with both behavioral and legal issues, several well on their way down the wrong path,” says Henderson. He found himself surprised at the immediate connection he made with them. “I ended up going back and speaking several times.” Once in Florida, he began pre-med coursework but never forgot about the impact he had on that group. “Though I was dedicated to my scientific studies, I naturally gravitated toward psychology and social work courses,” Henderson says. “Perhaps that group planted seeds of service I didn’t immediately recognize at the time.” Henderson would end up earning his bachelor’s degree in social work from Florida Atlantic University. His first internship was with a child protection team, where he dealt with cases of abuse, neglect, foster care and residential programs. He then went on to earn a master’s degree from Florida International University and took a position at a community mental health center, where he excelled. Over the next 15 years, he earned a Ph.D. from Barry University in Florida and an MBA from Jones International University, also serving as president and CEO of Florence Crittenton, president and CEO of KidsPeace, and chief clinical officer of Devereux Foundation, all on the East Coast. Along the way, he also became a father to Jasper, Naomi, Heath, Lachlan and Sage. “Yes, I was that parent at the airport back in the day. You know – the one with strollers and toys and snacks holding you up at the security checkpoint,” Henderson jokes as he remembers attempting to get all the kids from the East Coast to Calgary to visit family several times a year.

Community Initiatives In 2014, life changed – and flights certainly got easier – for the entire family when Arizona came calling. “Eventually I had the chance to join Gila River Health Care as its CEO,” Henderson says, noting that the short, direct route back home to Calgary, not to mention the weather, was one of the appeals of the move for his family. “Beyond the convenience, truly as a father, I was drawn to helping those children on the tribal land in need.” Providing an even deeper level of care to as many children as possible, in fact, led Henderson to his biggest move yet: joining Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) as its president and CEO in 2016.

22

So Scottsdale! June ‘19

JFCS’ programs and services include counseling, mental health assessment and treatment, early childhood trauma assessment and treatment, child crisis intervention and rehabilitative services, support for victims of domestic violence, substance abuse, and workforce readiness and high school equivalency exams for teens in foster care. Of particular note, according to Henderson, is the Shelter Without Walls domestic violence program which addresses the unmet needs of Maricopa County survivors of domestic violence and their children, who are residing outside of a shelter setting and struggling to attain and/or maintain safety and independence. “In addition, in 2017, Sojourner Center – Arizona’s largest domestic violence shelter – was in need of support. We were able to come in via an affiliate agreement and help keep its doors open. Today, I am thrilled to share that Sojourner is fully functional again and will be for years to come,” Henderson says. A final point of pride for Henderson is making integrated health care happen for Arizonans. “Integrated health care is a national initiative, and at its core, it is simply the systematic coordination of general and behavioral health care,” Henderson says. Currently, JCFS has two integrated Valley health clinics, with a third that will be integrated by year’s end. “Through it, clients are treated by a collaborative team of therapists, clinicians, medical doctors, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and other health care professionals all working together,” Henderson says. “The coordinated care efforts of this multidisciplinary team treat every aspect of a client’s well-being versus just medical, just mental or just behavioral issues one at a time.” To learn more, visit www.jfcsaz.org.

TAKING THE LEAD

Scottsdale dad and legal eagle Ben Graff takes multitasking to new level

By day, Ben Graff is both a busy zoning attorney with Quarles & Brady – the law firm that notably played a prominent role in securing the approval for The RitzCarlton in Paradise Valley – and an elected official. “I serve on the Central Arizona Water Conservation District Board. We oversee 40 percent of Arizona’s water supply,” says Graff, who helped get a historic drought contingency plan passed in January. But by evening, as an advocate for Arizona’s children, Graff is also a board member for Kids at Hope. “We give school districts the tools to cultivate an environment where all children can succeed,” Graff says. “We have programs to help motivate kids and build their self-worth despite behavioral, physical or family-related challenges.” Among the biggest reasons for his passion is that Graff is a father himself. “The most important title in my world is ‘daddy’ to Madison, 5, and Sophia, 3,” Graff says. “They will tell you my most important titles are chief fort builder and foreman of Lego construction. Admittedly, I love those ‘jobs’ since I am a total tinkerer.” Tinkering, in fact, led Graff to an interesting hobby. “Two years ago, I made my wife cement handprints of our daughters’ hands for Christmas,” Graff says. “I, of course, had to tinker with the leftover materials.” Before he knew it, Graff was sculpting the cement. Today, he has a series of both magnetized cement art and cement planters. “The fact that my wife says she has never seen anything like them before continues to be interpreted as a compliment,” Graff laughs. Speaking of laughs, another of Graff’s hobbies is pretty funny. “People assume my role as an attorney is adversarial, but it is really about building bridges,” Graff says. “I’ve often used humor to build those bridges.” Beyond the courtroom, Graff exercises his funny bone at Tempe Improv. “I first got on stage in 2018, and while I’m no Chris Rock, I held my own,” says Graff, who last performed in May. So, what’s next for this master multitasker? Graff, who was recently elected to the Valley Partnership board, an advocacy group for responsible development in Arizona, says his future holds “more advocacy and more building – and not just with Legos.”

WORKPLACE EASE

It’s all about balance for Chris Ronzio as he creates inspired solutions for businesses

As the founder of software company Trainual, Chris Ronzio describes himself as ambitious, driven and creative, having started his first business at the age of 14. Throughout his entrepreneurial journey, the Boston native developed a passion for technology, efficiency and making business easier. After spending a decade building – then selling – a national video production company before a stint in the consulting world, Ronzio had the opportunity to work with hundreds of business tycoons. What started out as a side hustle quickly became Ronzio’s full-time job, with Trainual now helping organize small and growing businesses in more than 75 countries worldwide. “Trainual provides a way to capture every process, role and responsibility by creating a consistent, teachable and scalable knowledge base centralized in one place,” Ronzio says. The idea originated from his video production and consulting agency days after he saw firsthand how chaotic business procedures can be, including onboarding new employees, and he was determined to find a way to streamline everyday small business processes. Drawing inspiration from his wife and two young boys, Ronzio stays motivated by setting goals for himself and engaging in healthy competition among his friends. “Hearing friends’ and fellow entrepreneurs’ success stories is motivation for me to keep pushing” he says. The decision to focus on Trainual came when Ronzio realized that his consulting expertise translated easily into marketing content. The company launched in January 2018, and, today, more than 2,000 companies utilize the service within their businesses. Ronzio notes that the highlight of his career is the people he surrounds himself with. “My favorite thing about the business is building a team that’s working toward a common goal and celebrating wins together,” he says. Currently, Ronzio is focused on making processes even smarter. “Business owners have been told to create operations manuals, standard operating procedures, and training manuals. But the best tool to do that work has been a three-ring binder or a word processor,” he says. “We’re creating the category for this online by showing businesses how to do it and helping them create the instruction manual for their company that they wish existed.”

AWARD-WINNING STYLE David Twigger is as fashionable as the parties he designs BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Creative director and founder of Vermilion Events and Design Group David Twigger showcases an eclectic personal style from behind the scenes of some of the most chic soirees in town. With a fashion sense influenced by everything from floral arrangements to architecture and colorful store windows, the creative designer draws inspiration from brands such as Mr. Turk and Tom Ford, as well as the one and only David Bowie. “Taking ideas and themes from clients and turning them into unforgettable events definitely comes across in my everyday style,” Twigger says. As the artistic force behind one of the Southwest’s premiere event planning and design firms, Twigger knows a thing or two about creating signature looks. Clad in suits for most of his career, he loves to branch out and blend color, textured fabrics, and his signature item – a vest – to rev up the style factor. “What I love most about Arizona is that it has its own style,” Twigger says. “It’s a bit undefined, which is the most exciting part. Arizona has always been home to a mix of people from across the country and all those styles combine with a fun dose of cowboy mixed in.”

What is your most prized possession in your closet? It’s a tie between my purple suede Elba vest or my custom black velvet sport coat – it’s heavenly! What would someone say if they looked in your closet? Multiple personalities? One part is very professional-looking while the other looks like a 40-year-old going on 20! Would you consider yourself a trendsetter? I would consider myself a quiet trendsetter. As an event planner, I’m usually behind the scenes or off in a corner, but I still like to push the boundaries enough to where people notice.

BALANCING ACT

Interior designer and mom Jennifer Biffer favors a functional, sophisticated wardrobe

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Left untamed, animal prints may invoke primal jungle vibes, but when styled right they can add just the right amount of chicness to any outfit according to interior designer Jennifer Biffer. Inspired by strong women like Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga and Coco Chanel, the sporty yet elegant mother of twin two-yearold boys admires any mom that can look fabulous while balancing family life and a career with grace. “I define style as having a signature look and understanding how to refine it,” Biffer says. For Biffer, this translates to dressing in red and turquoise hues and investing in timeless designer pieces by her favorite brands including Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel and Jimmy Choo. “My career requires that I always look my best because people hire me for my taste and style,” Biffer notes. Since her days consist of running around town, her ensembles are always the perfect combination of effortless sophistication and functionality. Weekends at the park with her kids call for a more casual approach, but when the sun goes down, Biffer has been to known to grab a pair of sparkly heels from her Jimmy Choo-adorned closet wall to turn up the style.

What is your No. 1 style tip? Smile! If you are smiling, then whatever you have on looks fabulous! What is your most prized possession in your closet? My collection of Chanel. For every design project I complete, I purchase a piece of Chanel as a reminder. The memories when I carry a Chanel handbag are always a reminder of where I was in my career at the time. What does style mean to you? Style is having a signature that evokes your personality without masking it. For example, a subtle perfume that, when someone smells it, reminds them of you.

MEET THE MEN OF FIVE VALLEY-BASED COMPANIES WITH DUAL ROLES OF BUSINESSMAN AND FATHER

So Scottsdale! June ‘19

RUSS PERRY Entrepreneur Russ Perry has an interesting habit. “Whenever my life is nearing a crossroads, I have a daughter,” says Perry, who welcomed his oldest, Maddix, as a senior in college while working toward graduation and trying to find his first adult job. A new father, Perry took a position with LG Electronics doing graphic design in 2005. But there was just one problem. “My degree was in industrial design and other than using Photoshop, I’d never done computer-led design,” Perry says. “Thankfully, I was a quick study.” And while he picked up the profession with ease, he never took to 12-hour days away from Maddix – or having a boss. “After LG and a stint at Apple, I went out on my own, opening a creative agency in 2006. I ran that until 2012,” Perry says. He welcomed his second daughter, Reese, that same year. By 2014, Perry had opened and closed another business and was at the biggest crossroads of his life. “I was in a full-on, early onset midlife crisis at just 31, quickly heading down a dark path,” Perry says. “Thankfully, in 2015, my youngest, Paige, came along. As it always seems to happen with me, I found my way at about the same time.” Perry opened Design Pickle in 2015, growing it into a highly successful flat-rate graphic design service in just four years. “We’ve grown to over 200 employees and are looking to expand into Australia and the United Kingdom to keep up with international demand,” says Perry, who also released a book in 2017 titled The Sober Entrepreneur, where he shares lessons learned about work, life and being present. Today, when he’s not with the kids or busy building his business, he can be heard on Good to be Home, an upbeat, inspirational podcast featuring Perry and his wife, Mika.

FRED BUELER PROJECT DIRECTOR, CHASSE BUILDING TEAM

38

So Scottsdale! June ‘19

For Fred Bueler, life is all about the chase – and the CHASSE. As a father of three boys under age 6 – Freddie, Lincoln and Jackson – much of Bueler’s personal time is spent tracking them down for snacks, story time or sports. “The biggest chase these days? Chasing them down in an attempt to get them to nap,” Bueler says. All of his work time is similarly dedicated to CHASSE Building Team, where he serves as a project director for the 130-member general contractor company behind such projects as the Biltmore area’s The Shops at Town & Country, Scottsdale’s Cheyenne Traditional School, and Phoenix’s Madison Meadows Middle School. “We have about $300 million in projects in development right now, from retail centers to schools to a state-of-the-art animal shelter,” Bueler says. He also carves out time to chase other people’s kids while on the job now and then. “In an effort to enhance the construction process on school campuses, we work to engage the students through educational classes, presentations and tours,” Bueler says. The STEM-based CHASSE program, which Bueler chairs and helps implement in schools across Arizona, includes classroom instruction and assemblies while allowing students to learn about the construction process, gain firsthand knowledge on the construction of their new school, and learn about different career paths in the construction industry. This program actually inspired Bueler, who is a recent past-member of the Scottsdale Active 20-30 Club, where he chaired both Brokers for Kids and Agents Benefiting Children, to get more involved in teaching and mentorship as well. “In 2017, I became a Scottsdale Charro,” says Bueler, who just finished fundraising for the organization throughout spring training in April. “My chief focus is fundraising to help maximize CHASSE’s charitable donations that support various charities and our education outreach initiatives for local teachers and children.”

BRIAN PIERCE AND KELLY EGAN Brian Pierce and Kelly Egan are a little salty, and not because they have a combined seven kids between them – all girls – ranging in age from 1 to 19. “We’re salty about the quality of actual salt being used in our food today,” Egan says. But that’s jumping ahead. Pierce is the former director of food and beverage for both The Phoenician and Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North. He also founded Urban Tavern and Tavern Americana in Scottsdale before taking on the master franchise rights of the CaliBurger chain throughout Mexico and Latin America in 2017. Egan got his start in technology, notably working as the strategic director for Best Buy before heading to Silicon Valley to invest in and build several businesses, one of which he sold to Google. He eventually invested in CaliBurger, immediately connecting with Pierce. “We were both looking at ways to spend more time with our families and a way to help other families live healthier lives,” Pierce says. “Given my franchise region, we were down in Mexico often, eventually learning about salt from the Sea of Cortez.” The salt derived from Cortez is allnatural and rich in magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron. “After a year of planning and development, we launched True Salt in 2018,” Egan says. “Unlike iodized salts that are refined and processed, True Salt contains no chemicals or anti-caking agents and is never bleached.” Their first account was Lon’s at The Hermosa Inn. Since then, local restaurants including True Food Kitchen and Mora Italian have signed on. “Today, we have nearly 200 accounts nationally,” Pierce says. “And we just landed our first grocery store, Fred Meyer.” The best part: Now they are able to sit down to dinner (with True Salt on the table, of course) with their families far more often than not.

SCOTT SANDERS FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT, OCTANE ENTERTAINMENT

40

So Scottsdale! June ‘19

Scott Sanders is getting a sister – sort of. Sanders, who owns Octane Entertainment, will welcome Mavrix – a “sister” concept to Octane Raceway – by year’s end. “Mavrix will be located in the 50,000-square-foot retail space next door to Octane,” Sanders says. “They will total a combined 110,000 square feet with shared access to an outdoor games patio, so guests will be able to seamlessly flow between the two venues and use shared arcade game cards at both.” When complete, Mavrix will feature bowling, 85 arcade games, laser tag, billiards, 1,500 square feet of meeting and event space, and a 5,000-square-foot restaurant and bar with games on the patio. Arizona native Sanders, who grew up watching car racing with his father, first got the idea to bring these family-friendly concepts to the Valley after a serendipitous visit to California in the early 2000s. “In my former life, I was a consultant,” Sanders says. “One night while on business in Southern California, a colleague mentioned there was a place where you could race indoors. I was intrigued – my dad would have gotten the biggest kick out of it.” So, Sanders set out to create his own enhanced version in Arizona. “In 2003, Octane Raceway was born,” Sanders says. “As the concept evolved, we wanted to expand further, but at the time there was no space.” Once he married and became a dad to Brody, 8, and Dylann, 3, it only compounded his desire to develop another family-friendly concept. In 2018, when the Toys R Us next door to Octane shuttered, he saw it as the ultimate sign and made the move to open Mavrix in its place. “With both Octane concepts, my vision is to become the premier entertainment destination in the Valley – especially for families just like mine,” Sanders says.

STEVEN SHEETS In late 2018, Valley native Steven Sheets was named chief executive officer of Southwest Behavioral & Health Services (SB&H) at just 36 years old. “We are a leader in the development and delivery of services in the areas of housing, residential care, prevention services, outpatient services to children, autism spectrum disorder, school-based counseling, opioid replacement services, incarcerated persons, and dually-diagnosed adults,” says Sheets, noting that the organization provides services throughout Maricopa, Gila, Mohave, Coconino and Yavapai counties. But these responsibilities are not what keeps Sheets up at night. In addition to taking on the role of CEO at SB&H in 2018, Sheets also became a first-time father. “Nelson will be 1 in August, so my wife, Morgan, and I are going on 10 months without sleep, and we wouldn’t have it any other way,” Sheets says. While SB&H might prefer him with a few hours of rest now and then, without Nelson and Morgan, Sheets would never have gotten involved with SB&H in the first place. “In 2009, I left my then-career in retail management, determined to find something more meaningful,” Sheets says. “I also proposed to Morgan that year.” Her father agreed to give his blessing on one condition: Sheets get a job – fast. Within three weeks of the proposal, Sheets took on a behavioral health case management position with a local nonprofit, which changed his life forever. By 2013, with a master’s degree in professional counseling in hand, Sheets joined SB&H, eventually overseeing all outpatient services across Maricopa and Gila counties and helping launch a Southwest Autism Center of Excellence in 2017. “Another point of pride is SB&H’s four opioid replacement clinics throughout the state, which are working tirelessly to save lives and help alleviate the statewide opioid crisis,” Sheets says.

BEAUTY MEETS INNOVATION Charles Small

When Charles Small, BSN, RN founded Glo Medspa, he wanted to make beauty affordable to every budget. By providing the highest quality services to clients with affordable prices, his medspa has turned into a successful multimillion dollar business. “However, I still feel success is only created by the happiness you can provide to your clients,” Charles says. Glo Medspa is a premier medical spa dedicated to providing clients with professional expertise in a range of aesthetic options. The ultimate goal is to help clients achieve a natural beauty. Glo Medspa offers clients many ways to enhance their natural appearance. Some of the services provided by knowledgeable experts are Botox, Juvederm, microneedling, lash extensions, facials, chemical peels, Ultrashape Body Contouring, laser hair removal, PRP scalp injections, and much more. Treatment plans are designed for each individual client to turn back the clock by providing a renewed, refreshed look. “We never upsell people on things they don’t need,” he says. With a refreshing atmosphere, attention to the smallest details, and the highest level of customer service, it is no wonder that Glo Medspa is reviewed as one of the top injectors in Scottsdale. In addition, the company has been recognized in 2019 by Ranking Arizona and by Three Best Rated. Last year, Glo Medspa was nominated for an award at the largest Aesthetic Show in Las Vegas. No one who knows Charles can argue that he has fashion

sense. “Of all the things in my closet, my Gucci loafers are my go to,” he says. “My personal sense of style developed when I lived in New York City as I became more aware of fashion trends, and staying ahead of current trends.” His sense of picking up on new, trending ideas lends to the success of Glo Medspa, allowing Charles to be the first to bring new trends to Arizona. He created the medspa with a boutique environment in mind. “I wanted a very hip and trendy environment, yet very chic. I didn’t want a big, corporate-run business.” Charles is very family-oriented, but also has an adventurous side. When he is not working, he might be spotted mountain biking, snowboarding, deep-sea fishing, golfing, or traveling. He has earned many certifications, including basic and advanced techniques for Juvederm and Botox injections. In addition, he is an active member of the Dermatology Nurse Association and American Society of Plastic Surgical Nurses. Currently, he is working on a patent for a nonsurgical breast lift, which is something nobody has been able to figure out how to perform, until now. Charles believes that self-confidence is contagious; when you look amazing, you feel amazing inside and out, and that self-confidence becomes a part of your lifestyle. By truly listening to clients and providing exceptional, honest care, Charles has made Glo Medspa a leader in the aesthetics world. PAYING IT FORWARD IN THEGlenCOMMUNITY Lerner and Kevin Rowe Lerner & Rowe, P.C., Arizona’s largest personal injury and consumer law firm, with over 250 employees, makes it their mission to provide aggressive representation while remaining compassionate and in-tune with the needs of clients and their loved ones. The firm’s pledge is to aide clients through every step of the legal process, whether that’s dealing with an insurance company, a zealous prosecutor, creditors who have forced you into bankruptcy, or a social security administration that has denied your claim. “Our job is helping others in their time of need,” says Kevin Rowe. Both Glen Lerner and Kevin Rowe take pride in providing the best representation to every single client, no matter the size of the case. “I love fighting for the little guy. In school, I was the kid who protected others from bullies and years later I found my fighting partner, Kevin,” Glen says. “It is an honor to help clients and to show them that they can get past this one awful moment. A car accident can take such a toll on a person—you’re in pain, relationships suffer and financial hardships arise, but we’re able to make the process easier,” Kevin says. “You have to remember that for so many clients, this is the first time they’ve ever tried to deal with some giant insurance company that doesn’t have their best interests at heart. I’ve been doing this twenty-eight years and we’ve represented over 100,000 people. This is what we do every day so let us make the process easier for you,” says Glen. Of personal style, both attorneys agree: “In the office, we dress in what’s comfortable to us—usually shorts and t-shirts—but also, it makes our clients relaxed sitting with guys and staff that aren’t stuffy.” Workout attire is a must have in Kevin’s closet while Glen’s pretty laid back and dresses down and calls his custom sports coats, jeans, and converse sneakers his tuxedo. Success to these attorneys is all about making a difference on a daily basis. Personal success to Glen is about family and raising his children with strong morals and faith so that they in turn can do good in the world. “As an attorney, I’m able to do good for people, to make an impact in clients’ and strangers’ lives in some way,” Glen says. However, the law firm is about more than protecting their clients with personal injury claims. Glen, Kevin and their team at Lerner & Rowe have made it their mission to give back to the community in big ways. Lerner & Rowe has been voted by Arizona Foothills Magazine Best of Our Valley Winner for the Most Philanthropic Company in Phoenix three years in a row. Glen and Kevin make it their mission to not only fight for the little guy against big insurance companies in court, but also to fight for their community through their nonprofit organization,

Lerner & Rowe Gives Back, to advocate for and improve lives of those in need, including children who live in poverty, the homeless, the hungry, veterans, and even four-legged friends. “Every penny raised in Arizona stays in Arizona to directly help our communities,” Kevin says. This past November Lerner and Rowe Gives Back bought and personally handed out 3,000 turkeys locally in Arizona along with a total of 10,000 turkeys and all the fixings nationwide at their other offices in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Chicago and New Orleans, all of which have their own Gives Back programs. This year they expect to feed even more families nationwide. They also have a 25 Days of Giving in December which makes dreams come true for families in need and a massive back-to-school supplies initiative at their offices throughout Arizona and nationwide that provides all necessary school supplies and backpacks to upwards of five to ten thousand children yearly. These are just some of the things the firm contributes to in their communities around the US, but it all started here in Arizona, the state which both partners call home. Both attorneys agree that the firm could not get involved in such big ways without the entire Lerner & Rowe team engaged and passionate about helping their communities. One such event, The Lerner & Rowe 6th Annual Charity Golf Event, was held in April and raised $421,000, surpassing their goal of $300,000. With the help of 56 volunteers and over 300 golfers, Lerner & Rowe Gives Back will be able to aid numerous local charities and organizations. “There’s an event in the community almost every weekend, and the whole Lerner & Rowe team is excited to help out. We couldn’t do it without such energetic employees who volunteer their time,” both attorneys explain. Lerner & Rowe Gives Back was voted the Nonprofit of the Year in 2018 by Arizona Foothills Magazine. Some of the local organizations the law firm and nonprofit have assisted include Helping Hands For Freedom, #LovePup Foundation, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Military Assistance Mission (MAM), and many more. “We believe in paying it forward. The more people who get involved, the more people and organizations we are able to help. Which will hopefully lead to social and community changes that will have a greater impact on those in need,” Kevin explains. Lerner & Rowe Gives Back always accepts monetary donations and event volunteers. To learn more about how to pay it forward with Lerner & Rowe Gives Back, please visit www.lernerandrowegivesback.com. NOT YOUR AVERAGE NEUROSURGEON SPINE DOCTOR Dr. Mohamed Abdulhamid, MD

Dr. Mohamed Abdulhamid, MD, a board certified neurosurgeon, has founded Sonospine-Scottsdale, and is one of only a few in the country who is trained and certified in the Sonospsine Sonosculpt procedure, which utilizes high frequency ultrasonic vibration for various spine conditions. He frequently educates the community on spinal conditions and back pain, helping people to understand that spinal surgery does not have to be invasive. Patients from all over the world come to Sonospine for a second opinion. Dr. Abdulhamid spends time with each patient to evaluate their symptoms, but also educates them on their condition and diagnosis. Patients leave the office knowing so much more about their ailment than when they came in. And for many, they feel a sense of relief. Because of comprehensive treatment plans catered to the individual, Dr. Abdulhamid’s patients are more likely to return to daily activities much sooner. “I treat my patients like family members. In this way, I am able to confidently recommend the best treatment option.” Prior to establishing Sonospine-Scottsdale, Dr. Abdulhamid has founded Royal Spine Ssurgery with the belief that effective spine care is a comprehensive approach centered around the patient. When surgery is necessary, he utilizes minimally invasive techniques with same day outpatient procedures to allow for a faster recovery and healing process. “Our surgical slogan is ‘Less is more,’” he explains. “A small incision heals more quickly than a larger cut, which means the patient can return to enjoying life much sooner.”

By combining cutting edge technology and innovation, Dr. Abdulhamid looks for ways to take his precise techniques to the next level. He explains that when many doctors perfect a technique, it becomes routine and that is all they practice. In contrast, Dr. Abdulhamid finds a technique that works and then asks himself how he can take it to the next level. “I constantly challenge myself to figure out if there is a better way to do what I do, that is what attracted me to the Sonospsine Sonosculpt technique in the first place” he says. Dr. Abdulhamid defines his style as business casual, but often wears scrubs as his uniform of choice. “I never wear the doctor’s white coat. Patients are already nervous when they come to see me, I want to ease their worry, not add to it,” he explains. “One thing I can’t live without is colognes. The sense of smell has a psychological effect on people to help them feel happy and less anxious.” Dr. Abdulhamid strives to make everyone at his practice feel at ease from the moment they enter the door, even if that means playing the prankster on his staff. “I don’t want to be intimidating,” he laughs. When Dr. Abdulhamid is not developing new minimally invasive surgical techniques, he enjoys traveling and landscape photography, among other passions. “Being able to restore one’s quality of life and function, is what defines success for me.” Contact Dr. Mohamed Abdulhamid, MD of Sonospine at 888.95.SPINE, or visit www.SonoSpineSurgery.com.

MAKING A POSITIVE IMPACT, ONE SMILE AT A TIME Kamran Fattah, DMD

Dr. Kamran Fattah, DMD is no stranger to success. As owner of Scottsdale Family Smiles, Kamran and his team believe healthy, beautiful teeth make life better, people more confident, and encourage smiling. “People who smile are happier; they are sharing themselves through their smile and they are brightening the lives of those around them with happiness. My job as a dentist is to help people feel confident and beautiful when they smile,” he says. Being the sole dentist at Scottsdale Family Smiles, Kamran takes his time with patients and treats each one like family. The mission of his practice is to deliver exceptional, compassionate, and honest patient care. Kamran has been practicing dentistry for 16 years, and prior to opening Scottsdale Family Smiles, he owned a successful practice in Salem, Oregon. He purchased his current office building in Scottsdale last year and has no plans of leaving. “I became a dentist because I wanted to serve the people in my community and know them over time. I love seeing families grow, hearing about big life events and vacations, and being a part of the story of my patients.” Kamran takes a holistic approach with his patients. By recognizing early oral manifestations of sleep apnea, acid reflux, and diabetes, he helps patients to be proactive with their whole body health. He and his team use the latest technologies to make dental care more comfortable and efficient for his patients, including: 3D imaging, digital impressions and restoration fabrication, electronic

anesthetic delivery, and digital low dose x-rays. He has received advanced training in treating TMJ pain and sleep-related breathing issues, cosmetic rehabilitation, dental implants, and advanced gum health therapies. He has also completed a mini residency in the treatment of sleep related breathing disorders and pain through the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry. In addition, Kamran is a mentor at CEREC Doctors training facility in Scottsdale, where doctors from around the world gather to learn about CAD CAM dentistry. “I love that dentistry provides me with so many opportunities for continued growth.” With an appreciation of quality over quantity, Kamran gravitates toward more of a classic style. In his closet are sports coats that go well with jeans or slacks to dress up an outfit. “I also have some extraordinarily comfortable Swiss-made shoes that have made my life much more enjoyable; however, no one would confuse them with stylish,” he jokes. Outside of the office, Kamran loves showing off his BBQ skills and entertaining friends, while soaking up the Arizona sun with his wife and two children. “Success for me is making a positive impact on the people and places dear to you. It is raising up the people you work with and for; it is enjoying what you have and who you are,” Kamran says. AUTHENTIC MEETS BOLD IN REAL ESTATE Michael Brooks

Michael Brooks, an associate broker with E&G Real Estate Services, is not afraid to be a team player, work hard, and always strive for authenticity. “Creating new relationships and deepening existing ones are what I enjoy most about real estate,” Michael says. E&G, the premier full-service residential investment brokerage in the area, holds a stellar reputation because of their ability to deliver. “Our clients’ success and satisfaction speaks for itself through their continued patronage and referrals. Trust is paramount. Ultimately, do you, as a potential client, have faith that we will do what we say we are going to do?” Michael says. As a full-service firm, the company offers a range of expertise and services. By integrating sales, leasing, and fullservice property management in-house, E&G can streamline the cost, return projections, and accountability for clients. “Our knowledge of the property management business adds exponential value to our guidance on the sales side, and vice versa. When you include our commitment to hiring the strongest professionals in their respective areas of expertise, we are perfectly positioned as a catalyst for the growth of our clients’ residential investment portfolios. E&G strives for excellence, setting itself as a leader in real estate, whether purchasing, repairing and updating, or managing the property.

As part of the sales and business development side of E&G, Michael works diligently for his clients’ best interests. He takes an honest and friendly approach to finding the right property for them. “Connecting with people and understanding their needs is the most important part of what I do.” Michael is not afraid to be bold when it comes to fashion. “I remember years ago while in college, wearing a black fedora and silk pajama pants...What was I thinking?” he jokes. “While I have definitely left those days behind, I find that incorporating something flashy or different into my outfit helps me meet new people and start conversations. Plus it’s more fun!” One item he cannot live without, however, is his Saks Fifth Avenue double monk-strap leather shoes. Michael is attracted to anything related to self-betterment. Exercising, reading, and learning how to become a better person are just a few of the activities he loves, besides spending time with his family. And he never turns down an invitation from his two year old son to play with toy cars. “The word success gets tossed around so much, and I normally hear it used as a noun—he/she/it is a ‘success.’ I subscribe to Earl Nightingale’s definition as a verb: ‘Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.’” To contact Michael Brooks at E&G Real Estate Services, please call 602.751.1721, or visit www.eandgrealestate.com.

BRINGING THE FUN BACK TO BUSINESS David Goldstein

Owner David Goldstein created Biltmore Loan & Jewelry with customer satisfaction as a priority, while maintaining privacy and discretion. “’We buy or loan on almost anything you own,’ is our saying, and we buy at fair prices for both us and for the customer.” Biltmore provides upscale collateral lending or an outright selling experience for virtually anything, bringing a cash value to your valuables. It is an eclectic gallery of not just exquisite jewelry, but also high-end handbags, fine crystal, fine art, and sports memorabilia, including a collection of World Series rings from the 1920’s. “We aren’t one of those one hit wonders that you see on every corner. We take care of our customers long term and have absolute confidence in our products and services.” David started Biltmore nine years ago to offer more ways for people to take out a loan or to sell unwanted items, and often pays more than his competitors. He regularly works with new and long-term customers, whether they are experiencing the death of a loved one, divorce, paying off debt, or simply downsizing and want to sell memorabilia or unworn jewelry. Customers come to Biltmore not only because of their high loan to value, but also because of the vast expertise in high-end valuables. It is not uncommon for David and his team to conduct research for entire estates in order to facilitate a possible buy. “Biltmore has of a library of certified experts and appraisers in all areas,” he explains.

David must be doing something right, because he has been doing business in the Valley for 40 years. To him, success is when both parties are happy. “So many define success as a barometer of the money. You can’t make everything perfect all the time, but I’ll go to the ends of the earth to make my customers happy.” David’s tastes are very eclectic in part because he has been fortunate enough to travel the world in search of unique items. He appreciates fine craftsmanship and the small details. His Italian sports jacket is a fashion must-have, but also says: “I can’t live without my jeans; I’m always in jeans and a shirt. I’m a regular guy.” Every day is an adventure to David, and he is excited to get to work and discover something new, or acquire a new item. He has a thirst for knowledge, especially related to jewelry. Most important to him, though, is family, along with his love of German Shepherds. He is active in the community with Cortney’s Place and other local charities. “We’re about bringing the fun back into business. We all buy things to bring joy to our lives, so shopping for something beautiful or unique that makes you happy should be fun.” With Biltmore’s casual, but professional, atmosphere David hopes that it is just that—fun. MEET THE MORTGAGE MAN Robert W. Schreyer, CRMO

Robert Schreyer of Camelback Mortgage has over 25 years of experience in the mortgage industry, serving as a producing leader for both large and small mortgage companies in the Valley. His passion for helping people achieve their goals is key to his success in the marketplace. “There’s no secret, I simply offer incredible service and follow through with my clients. Many of them have become close friends,” Robert says. “I became a mortgage professional because I love helping people navigate through one of the biggest decisions of their lives. Maybe your family is growing and you want a bigger home. Or, you’re looking to downsize. Or, even starting a college fund and want a lower interest rate. I am here for my clients throughout the different seasons of their lives.” Robert does not view his clients as just another number. Instead, he spends time getting to know each one on a personal level so that he can better serve their needs. “I strive to be the trusted mortgage advisor to my valued clients,” he explains. “I want to help people with their biggest purchase of their life and walk them through the process.” Camelback Mortgage, the local mortgage experts, is quickly growing within Arizona and beyond. As the market leader, Robert’s vision is to grow Camelback Mortgage with the right people through very high ethical standards and impeccable business practices. “We are looking for the professional career loan originator to join our growing family.”

As a mortgage broker, Robert’s vast experience allows him to shop for the best loan programs and get the best rate for his clients, often obtaining a half to one percent lower than competing banks. He has earned the respect of those on his team and in the industry by developing relationships based on trust and accountability. “I honor God in everything I do—whether that is helping a client through the loan process, raising my kids, or anything else that I do in my life.” As for fashion, Robert says: “I like cutting edge styles that are classy and makes me feel good,” and agrees that he dresses for success because he never knows who he is going to meet. While he does wear everything that is in his closet, in the winter he tends to show favoritism to his lucky scarf because it “brings style to any outfit.” Family is most important to Robert, as he is a full-time single father to four amazing kids and is very active in their lives. When he’s not closing a deal, he volunteers at his church and serves on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale. His adventurous side shows with his love of outdoor activities, such as snowboarding, riding dirt bikes, and spending time on his boat. “To me, success is being able to do what you love, while having a positive impact on the world,” Robert says. SIMPLY SOPHISTICATED Shahe Koulloukian of Mazvo Auto Care Center

Mechanics have never had the reputation for being the most trustworthy profession – but Shahe Koulloukian, owner of Mazvo Auto Care Center, has made it his personal crusade to change that perception. And for over two decades, he has run his business based on empathy, not the bottom line: the crucial difference that elevates Mazvo above the competition. He sees himself as a consumer advocate, rather than the predatorial mechanic stereotypes are made of. Repairing cars, he says, is the easy part. Empowering customers with knowledge and witnessing their satisfaction is the reward. He doesn’t just want to fix cars; he wants to fix auto repair. Friends and family describe Koulloukian as “a giver,” and we need look no further than his business for proof. He regularly provides free car care classes at Mazvo to help clients – especially women, who are often unfairly intimidated by auto repair shops – better understand their vehicles and be more confident car owners. Beyond that, he volunteers at local shelters, giving back to the community he loves in every way he can. Fluent in six languages and having lived on three continents, Koulloukian’s travels have played a big part in shaping his personal style. He defines it the way he defines himself: simple and honest, with a splash of color. His time spent living in France, where he says you can’t help but be “infected by style,” had the most impact. In fact, his favorite phrase

regarding fashion is La simplicité est la sophistication supreme, which means “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” The splash of color which elevates that simple style incorporates must-have pieces such as his late father’s silver ring with a tourmaline stone, a beloved keepsake from the four years he spent in Nigeria. Koulloukian’s wardrobe isn’t the only thing with an international flavor – literally. His varied cultural experiences and deepseated culinary roots provide the perfect backdrop for his second business, The Flying Pigeon food truck. Cooking, Koulloukian says, is the essence of family and unity, and The Flying Pigeon’s globally-inspired cuisine allows him to share that love. From providing his Mazvo customers with empathy and education to providing his Flying Pigeon customers with a tantalizing taste of faraway cultures, Koulloukian keeps busy; success, in his opinion, is providing value over price so that you can outlast your competition, not beat them. And though his style is more simplistic than extravagant (it’s like chess, he reasons; you have so many pieces, but it only takes one to checkmate), he does know one thing about luxury. “Learn to keep luxury as a gift, not an entitlement,” he says. “You will achieve reason and sensibility a lot more quickly.” To contact Shahe Koulloukian of Mazvo, please call 602.248.8711, or visit www.mazvo.com.

FROM HOBBY TO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS Scott Gauthier

What started as a hobby for Scott Gauthier, owner and designer of Gauthier Jewelry, has turned into so much more. A recognized jewelry designer worldwide, Scott has been in business for 31 years and is one of the nation’s top independent jewelers. Working with precious and rare gemstones, Scott creates contemporary designs that are sought after by many, including collectors and celebrities. His jewelry is internationally known for its mix of geometric shapes and artistic balance. Each of his pieces include a small sapphire hidden somewhere on the piece—the Gauthier signature trademark. Gauthier Jewelry is different from other jewelers in that 100% of all the jewelry is created by Scott himself. There is no computer CAD design work; Scott designs and molds each piece by hand. While this process is labor-intensive, the final piece of jewelry is guaranteed to be of the highest quality craftsmanship and as original as the person who wears it. “Every day I make something new and unique. I start with a loose stone and let the stone dictate how the piece ends up,” he says. Last year, Gauthier Jewelry moved to its new location at the corner of Scottsdale Road and Lincoln Drive. “We’re excited because this new space allows us to offer more to our guests,” Scott explains. Among the new offerings is a live bench camera, so that customers may view their jewelry being set.

Guests visiting the jewelry studio will enjoy an interactive retail experience while sipping wine or champagne, and admiring the distinctive limited edition and one-of-a-kind pieces. Scott encourages people to take their time in the studio so they notice the tiny intricacies of his wearable art. “I truly believe that jewelry picks a person as much as a person picks the jewelry.” Scott also remounts stones and works with customers to create new pieces. “I help people to reimagine and recreate a cherished piece. I also aide people in bringing new designs to life, even if they have only a spark of an idea.” Scott’s sense of style is summed up by saying ‘what’s good is good.’ “Style doesn’t have to be loud. Often, less is more,” he says. He prefers subtle tones and loves his white leather sneakers to dress up an outfit. One item from his closet that Scott cannot live without is a pair of slip-on Gucci shoes. Success, to Scott, is knowing the many happy clients that wear his art. Outside of jewelry design, he holds other artistic endeavors, including interior design and building metal furniture for friends and family. Scott also collects and restores classic cars. “I do it all: the motor, interior, bodywork, and paint,” he says. “I am very fortunate to have turned my love of jewelry making into a business, and that I can offer people the opportunity to ‘Wear Art.’” To contact Scott Gauthier at Gauthier Jewelry, please call 480.941.1707, or visit www.gauthierjewelry.com.

COMMITTED TO HAPPY, HEALTHY, AND BEING THE BEST IN HIS FIELD William Hall, M.D.

Dr. William Hall founded Infini Cosmetic Associates to provide the safest and very best in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. While most cosmetic surgical practices perform many types of procedures with no single focus, Infini Cosmetic is unique in that they are a true modern liposculpture specialty clinic. “We are fat specialists. It’s the only surgical procedure we do,” Dr. Hall says. While Dr. Hall focuses solely on the surgical specialties of liposuction and Brazilian Butt Lift, Infini Cosmetic also has a large non-surgical and laser center for services that include wrinkles, facial and body tightening, treating aging skin, and hair removal. The center is AAAHC accredited, and one of the top practices for Botox and fillers in the Valley. Patients of Infini Cosmetic receive the highest quality of service. “We strive to not only achieve great surgical precision, but also to treat our clients as we would want to be treated. That starts with honesty and only taking clients that we feel can achieve what they desire,” Dr. Hall explains. “When doing a complimentary consultation, I always treat my prospective patients as if they were my own brother, sister, or other family member. In this way, it allows me to have their best interest in mind when considering their candidacy for surgery.” Through on-going training and instruction with the best national and international specialists, Dr. Hall is able to offer his clients the safest, most effective and advanced treatments.

He is one of the founding inaugural members of the World Association of Gluteal Surgeons, an organization dedicated to improving patient safety and outcomes in surgery. In addition, he is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and of the American Society of Liposuction Surgery. Dr. Hall’s style is sharp and clean cut. He credits the impeccable tailoring of his clothing. “It really is not what you are wearing, but how you wear it. Guys don’t accessorize a lot, so proper fit and knowing what tones look good on you is important.” His go-to accessories are his Italian or French loafers, or drivers with shorts in the summer. He says: “Although there is a place for sandals, for me it’s mainly at the pool.” When not working or teaching at his accredited liposuction training course, Dr. Hall loves to spend time with his two young boys. “They keep me on my toes and keeps my energy levels up. I admit, I am absolutely smitten.” Also, he enjoys deep sea fishing, hunting waterfowl in Iowa with his dad and brothers, playing a little blackjack in Vegas, and indulging in some great dinners and rare wine. “Success is that feeling of truly loving waking up to go to your job each day. I enjoy what I do because my practice involves working with healthy, happy, and motivated people who truly want or need a change in their lives,” Dr. Hall says. EYE CARE HAS NEVER BEEN SO STYLISH Dr. Laki De Mel

“Having the ability to enhance a patient’s vision so they can clearly see and get the most out of life is what I enjoy most,” says Dr. Laki De Mel of Lumiere Optique. Lumiere Optique, located next to the Scottsdale Quarter, is the only high end boutique-style eye care practice in Arizona. “Vision is such an integral part of our everyday lives. The gift of sight allows us to see our child’s face light up when they are jumping in the rare Arizona rain puddles or manically laughing after a sugar high,” Dr. De Mel explains. Lumiere Optique is Scottsdale’s premier eye care practice because of Dr. De Mel’s passion for personalized and high end optometry. “There are many definitions for success, but what years in optometry have taught me that success is when you are constantly able to over-deliver on a client’s expectation.” From the moment they schedule an eye exam at Lumiere Optique, a client can expect only the most exceptional service. Maintaining excellent long-term relationships with his clients is just one of the many elements that sets Dr. De Mel above his competition. Each client receives a personalized, high quality exam, in which Dr. De Mel makes it his priority to listen. During the eye exam, the latest cutting-edge technology is used to not only check a client’s vision, but more importantly, the health of their eyes. In addition, clients receive a customized eye styling and fitting session. “Our staff is trained to support and guide our clients in choosing the perfect, vogue-ish frame that suits

their face as well as their impeccable style,” Dr. De Mel says. The staff at Lumiere Optique is dedicated to helping clients find eyewear that represents their personality. The boutique eye care practice offers some of the finest eyewear collections, such as Lindberg, Mykita, Tom Ford, and Thierry Lasry. In addition, Lumiere Optique is the only store in the state to carry the exclusive Lindberg Precious line. “This line is not just glasses, they are jewelry for your eyes. They feature 24 carat gold, diamond, and buffalo horn frames that are fully customizable.” Dr. De Mel defines his style as refined elegance, preferring quality products for his everyday style. “And I can’t live without my sunglasses, of course! Being an avid golfer and in sunny Arizona, you can’t be caught without them. Not just for style, but more importantly to protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays that cause various eye health issues,” he explains. Golf, travel, and volunteer work are some of the activities Dr. De Mel enjoys outside of helping clients. He volunteers through the Arizona Optometric Association, and has recently participated in the community outreach event, HopeFest Phoenix, to provide eye health care. Lumiere Optique is open every day except Thursday, with available weekend eye exam appointments. Various insurance plans are accepted. PROVIDING A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HEART HEALTH Jack Wolfson, DO

Unlike other cardiologists, Dr. Jack Wolfson, DO believes that ‘the cause is the cure.’ “If we find the cause(s), we have the cure. Medicine has lost all focus on causation; they don’t teach us that in medical school. But after seeing so much sickness in big practice and in my own family, becoming a doctor of cause is paramount to my life.” He started Wolfson Integrative Cardiology, a full-service natural holistic cardiology practice, to provide patients with the best heart health care without pills or invasive procedures. His mission is to get people off pharmaceuticals and avoid unnecessary surgical procedures, using the most advanced lab-testing in the world. “My passion is to prevent disease with lifestyle and nutrition. I focus on the cause of heart disease versus the reactive ‘band-aid’ approach of mainstream medicine,” he explains. Dr. Jack spends much time with each patient to find the underlying cause of a health problem, and then teaches them that there is a natural way to prevent heart disease by removing what causes health problems. These visits are personalized to every single patient. “Long visits are how I guide my patients to optimal health with a goal of a 100-year lifestyle.” With his individualized and natural approach to health care, it is no wonder Dr. Jack has been recognized as one of Arizona’s Top Doctors by Phoenix Magazine. In addition, he was voted Top Holistic MD by Natural News and Top 50 Integrative

Physicians by DrAxe.com. A member of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Jack has been a speaker at The Truth About Cancer, Paleo F(x), Freedom Fest, Autism One, and the Integrative Healthcare Symposium in New York City. He also provides health and wellness lectures to the community. Dr. Jack is a family man. “Any time away from my patients is spent with family and friends,” he says, and loves being outdoors to enjoy the sun. He and his family are active with Child Help and various animal rescues. He describes his dress as casual. “Khakis or well-fitted jeans are the norm for me, unless it’s summer, then you can find me in shorts. I skip the tie unless I’m speaking on stage.” As a family, they try to shop for organic cotton garments, especially underwear. As for his favorite item, Dr. Jack says: “Every man should own a black blazer. It goes with just about everything and hides wrinkles well when traveling.” He also owns a pair of shoes from Italy that he wears only on special occasions. “Success to me is about my patients living their best life: healthy and happy. You deserve to have boundless energy, a clear mind, and a long life. I offer that in my office to Arizona and the world. If you are looking to get off pharmaceuticals safely and easily while learning real prevention and anti-aging strategies, come see me.” Contact Dr. Jack Wolfson of Wolfson Integrative Cardiology at 480.535.6844, or visit www.wolfsonintegrativecardiology.com.

Unlike other realtors, Raul and Jack work as a team to provide concierge-style service to their clients. In addition, they negotiate and close deals as a team. “We are like brothers. Raul and Jack maintain consistent communication with their clients, whether delivering good, bad, or no news. With attention to the smallest details, both realtors possess unparalleled sales strategies and superb product knowledge. “We know luxury,” Raul jokes. However, it is no joke that both agents have an excellent reputation in the luxury real estate market. Raul and Jack represent properties in some of the most affluent neighborhoods, with the utmost discretion inclusive of luxury high-rise condominiums, large estates, and everything in between. Both have repeatedly broken sales records in the luxury real estate industry, most recently with the sale of a penthouse at the Enclave at Borgata.

He loves to spend his free time with his adult children and fiancé, holding fun family dinners and taking impromptu weekend trips. Jack is passionate about giving back and has served on several boards for local non-profit organizations, including Homeward Bound and one-n-ten. He has also had the honor to serve as the past gala chair for the Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS “Night for Life.” When not working or volunteering, Jack loves to travel and explore new places. TURNING A VISION INTO REALITY Jesse Werner

What started as a wish became reality for Jesse Werner, founder of Whish, natural skin care and beauty products. When his wife, Aimee, could not find a natural, yet effective and delightfully scented, shave cream option, they took it upon themselves to create one. Now, Whish offers an entire line of premier natural skin care products. “I love the ability to create any product we want,” Jesse says. Whish uses naturally-sourced and organic ingredients in all of their beauty and skin care products, and promises everything to be free from sulfates, parabens, phthalates, DEA & TEA, and petrochemicals. They are Leaping Bunny Certified, the gold-standard in cruelty free personal care products, and guaranteed 100% safe for prolonged use for all ages. Each product goes through extensive testing to ensure they deliver results that customers can see. Whish beauty products have been featured in People Magazine, Marie Claire, US Weekly, the Today Show, FabFitFun subscription boxes, and more. There is no one-size-fits-all routine for skin care, which is why these “powerfully effective naturals” feature several types of moisturizers, cleansers, masks, eye treatments, body firming, hair removal, all-natural deodorant, and much more. The company even offers travel-sized options for popular items. “We are not just a marketing company, but a manufacturing company as well. Our motto is to under-promise and over-deliver. I feel we not only make an exceptional product, but we stand behind it, always,” Jesse explains.

Not only does Whish sell the finished skin care products, but the company also makes the beauty serums, creates bottle decoration, and ships the final product directly to customers. By handling each step involved in the creating and manufacturing process, Jesse and his team at Whish can ensure the best quality products are delivered to customers. Jesse takes a very hands on approach, and manages the entire Whish process start to finish. On a typical day, he interacts with their many employees on everything from the production schedule to social media strategy. In addition, he goes between marketing conference calls, interviewing new employee candidates, working on new product development, fine tuning the marketing calendar, and so much more. “Every day is different, which I really love,” he says. When Jesse is not creating a new beauty product or ensuring only the best quality reaches customers, he spends as much time as he can with his family. As for style, he cannot go without his designer sneakers. Otherwise, he says he does not over think it. “I know what I like when I see it. Or, I go with the style of ‘ask my wife,’” he jokes. “I feel that success isn’t about money or material things. Rather, it is the freedom to have a vision for your business or your life, and have the ability to make that vision a reality,” says Jesse. BUILDING DREAMS Scott Pfeiffer

With over 20 years of building custom homes in Scottsdale and the surrounding areas, Scott Pfeiffer has a proven track record of delivering quality results to happy clients. As the owner and President of Sonora West Development, Scott is involved in every custom home build from start to finish. “Quality is most important; more than anything else. I treat the process like it’s my home and how I’d want it built,” he explains. Scott pulls inspiration from both the east and west coasts to create innovative custom styles. He is up-to-date on all the current trends, keeping at the forefront of what people want next. “By keeping the architecture simple and elegant, you’ll never fail,” he says. Scott has completed hundreds of custom home build projects, and while it is a very complex and difficult process, he always makes the process enjoyable for his clients. “The average build time is anywhere from 12 months to 2 years, or more, and I’m with them for the long haul. There is a sort of marriage between client and builder where lines of communication need to be open at all times.” As someone who is service-oriented, Scott is honest with his clients and truly wants what is best for them and their new home. “All clients are different, and every client expects different things from the design/build process. We take a different approach than most companies. We cater to each and

every project by allowing them to choose how involved they are. We listen, take care of their investment, and admit if we make mistakes,” Scott explains. Scott dresses for comfort. “My style is ultra-casual. I am a white tee shirt and jeans kind of guy. I want my performance to define my character, not my clothing. I also love to get intimately involved on jobsites, and that’s no place for a suit,” he jokes. When not overseeing a new home build, he heads for the outdoors to fish, hike, or simply explore anywhere and everywhere in the western U.S. with his children. As the area’s premier design-build firm, Sonora West Development was regional winner of the 2018 Luxe Red awards for Best Home in the West. In addition, the company won the Grand Award Honor of “Best Single Family Detached Home – 3,500 to 4,500 sq.ft.” Sonora West Development has also been featured numerous times in Luxe Magazine and the Arizona Foothills Magazine Design Showcase. Completing a design build of a large custom home is a difficult process, but very gratifying to both the client and the builder when done properly. Scott defines success as “being invited back to see how our client and their family is flourishing in their new home. It is extremely rewarding to see an entire family living in something that we helped create,” he says. With symptomatic low testosterone, many issues can arise, negatively affecting all areas of life including work and personal relationships, body composition, fatigue, libido, motivation and job performance, as well decreasing one’s positive sense of physical and mental well-being.

Dr. Evans utilizes clinically-proven methods for testosterone replacement therapy and opiate addiction treatment to help his patients feel like a much better version of themselves. Dr. Evans positively believes that everyone can take charge of their own personal, health-related destiny. With this mindset, he is determined to achieve optimal results for his patients. “My goal is to help others regain control over their own lives.” Dr. Evans played competitive ice hockey through college and then boxed prior to “retiring” from competitive sports. He maintains his passion for boxing, bodybuilding, and all strength sports. He is bi-lingual, travels, , and loves to “shake his booty” should the mood strike him. As for his style, Dr. Evans describes it thusly, “I’m a rocker…well-tailored rock ‘n’ roll. My John Varvatos boots, Varvatos jeans, a well-fitted V-neck shirt, nice watch, and tasteful accessories are my essential uniform.” In closing, he states, “To me, success is more or less being able to live your life largely on your own terms. To go where you want, when you want, how you want. To be in the position to affect positive changes to your own life, and share that positivity and happiness with your close friends and loved ones.” Contact Dr. Ben Evans, MD of Men’s Vitality Center at 480.588.6924, or visit www.mensvitalitycenter.com.

Creating Superman

This Father’s Day, let The Hormone Zone doctors help dad feel like the superhero he is Dads are simple creatures. They work hard and don’t ask for much. They tell terribly cheesy jokes that everyone secretly loves. They’re selfless, making them the hardest people to shop for. With Father’s Day around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about what to get the Superman in your life. Here’s a thought: send Dad to The Hormone Zone. Doctors Cristina Romero-Bosch and John A. Robinson will help him feel like a younger, more vital Clark Kent. The Hormone Zone is an alternative medicine practice located in Scottsdale. It’s owned by Bosch and Robinson, boardcertified naturopathic medical doctors and husband and wife. Together they have almost 26 years of medical experience in hormone balancing therapies, age management medicine and optimal sex health. Health ebbs and flows for reasons out of our control. Understanding this, Bosch and Robinson preach that health

is a process, not a journey. They support patients throughout this process by offering innovative therapies and nonsurgical treatments that target hormones and restore them back to new. Here’s what they can offer Dad: • The Priapus Shot (P-Shot): Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is extracted from the patient’s blood and injected into the penis. This minimally invasive therapy rejuvenates the tissue, enhances sensitivity and improves performance. • Testosterone Replacement Therapy with HCG: When men add the bioidentical natural hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) to their regular testosterone replacement regimen, the benefits are immense. Increased libido, improved testicular function and stabilization of mood are just a few. • Weight Loss: From balancing insulin to analyzing metabolic rate, Bosch

and Robinson offer more than one approach to weight loss. They will help Dad feel and look his absolute best by creating a comprehensive plan unique to him. IV Therapy for Athletic Recovery: This direct infusion of vitamins and minerals will reinvigorate Dad and expedite his recovery time from physical activity. Peptide Therapy: A new therapy that improves wellness in more ways than one. There are several peptide options, including BPC and CJC and Ipamorelin. BPC repairs and heals sore joints and ligaments. CJC and Ipamorelin improve sleep and recovery, enhances complexion and reduces abdominal fat. Buh-bye, Dad bod.

With over 30 years of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgical experience, Dr Wolin and his staff not only Talk the Talk… they also Walk the Walk. Listen to what his patients have to say about their care and surgical results… (Verified independent interview) Just a few months ago I got a good closeup view of my lips in the mirror. I was horrified. How could I possibly have gotten so many wrinkles in not only my lips but also in the areas surrounding my mouth? I never even smoked cigarettes..I immediately decided that I would try and remedy the situation. I went to a local spa where I was told that a temporary filler combined with a standard skin peel would solve my problems. After undergoing multiple injections, it was evident that the solution to my problem not in a little jar of magical potions nor in a minuscule injection of temporary filler. The problem could only be solved by a combination of permanent volumizing as well as resurfacing my skin. I had heard of Dr wolin and his greater than 25 year experience using Fat Transfer techniques to revolumize and smooth wrinkles around the mouth. I also found that he was using a fantastic chemical peel resurfacing technique called “ The Croton Oil Peel” which produced amazing smoothing of the skin without the downtime associated with Laser Resurfacing. In just 45 minutes, under local anesthesia, I have been able to reclaim my deflated and wrinkled mouth…My results were amazing…natural and permanent.

Torch Cigar Bar This hidden gem is tucked into the northeast corner of High Street in North Phoenix. While most cigar bars require membership, Torch is open to members and the general public, making it a true sanctuary for all cigar aficionados. It boasts 200 premium cigar options as well as 100 whiskies, 200 spirits, eight beer taps, wines by the glass and bottle, and craft cocktails. The bar also includes a 400-squarefoot humidor, which allows for retail sales and makes it one of the only cigar shops in the immediate area. www.torchcigarbar.com. EXPERIENTIAL EXPRESSION Wonderspaces brings interactive art to the masses at Scottsdale Fashion Square

BY KAYLOR JONES / PHOTOS BY ADRIANNA MAYA

Believe it or not, one of Scottsdale Fashion Square’s newest tenants is an immersive art gallery. Designed to make art accessible by bringing an art museum experience to new audiences, Wonderspaces opened in April. While the shows change throughout the year, the gallery itself is permanent. On display through mid-July, its first show, Point of View, features works by visual artists from around the world in the 16,000-square-foot Wonderspaces gallery. Each is designed to foster understanding through universal experiences and provide a different look at the concept of perspective. Showcasing both abstract and literal interpretations of topics ranging from religion and power to time and reality, the diverse exhibits provide an engaging experience. Among the show’s 13 awe-inspiring installations is Submergence, a room-size grid of hanging lights that interact with ambient music to create a mesmerizing blinking latticework. In Body Paint, a kaleidoscopic screen blankets the walls while guests use the movement of their bodies to add splashes of color to the collaborative canvas. Another exhibit, The Last Word, provides a glimpse into the lives of others as visitors read messages that have been left behind before writing one of their own, whether it be a positive affirmation to a stranger or an emotionally stirring confession. A Los Angeles-based startup, Wonderspaces started out with a pair of pop-up shows in San Diego that drew in thousands of visitors and took the media by storm. With their first permanent location finding its home in Scottsdale, the company hopes to open more locations across the country to host other touring shows. In the past, Wonderspaces has taken root in cruise ship terminals and warehouse complexes. The current venue in Scottsdale Fashion Square is the former Harkins movie theater, with its 18-foot ceilings housing the show’s unique takes on interactive artwork. “We intend to welcome people who don’t usually seek out art,” says Jason Shin, president and co-founder of Wonderspaces. “We’re happy to repurpose spaces to do so.” Overall, the installation is designed to make cutting-edge artwork more approachable to people across the Valley, especially those who feel traditional art museums aren’t for them. “Through our shows, we aim to create a space where people can connect with art and with each other,” Shin says. “Everything about our shows – from the location and pricing to the lineup of art – is designed with accessibility in mind.” Tickets are $15 to $24, and guests must arrive within 15 minutes of their entry time window. It is advised to allot 80 minutes to experience the immersive pieces. Visitors under 16 require adult supervision. Wonderspaces is open daily except for Monday. For more information and tickets, visit www.arizona.wonderspaces.com.

Luxe WHEELS

2020 JEEP GLADIATOR The auto every dad wants for Father’s Day BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS Base price: $33,545

Twenty-eight years have gone by since there’s been a Jeep-branded pickup, the last being the Comanche, sold from 1986 to 1992. One of the most highly anticipated vehicles to launch in years, the Jeep Gladiator has finally arrived amid renewed interest in midsize pickups like the Chevrolet Colorado, the Toyota Tacoma, and the Ford Ranger. You’d be forgiven for mistaking the Gladiator for a Jeep Wrangler given the familiar seven-slot grille, round headlamps, domed Rubicon hood, flared fenders, and square taillights. The Gladiator shares its front two-thirds with the four-door Wrangler, but sports a 5-foot cargo bed and folddown tailgate in the back. Its best-in-class towing capability and Wrangler-based design instantly differentiate the Gladiator from other midsize pickups. The roof, available in a choice of a hard or soft top, is removable, making the four-dooronly Gladiator a convertible and all-wheel drive pickup – something not offered by anyone else. There’s even a fold-down windshield, removable carpeting, and a generous array of grab handles in the cabin. With an interior that mixes utility and modernity, the touch-screen infotainment system comes in 7- and 8.4-inch options.

94

So Scottsdale! June ‘19

The Gladiator is available in four trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Overland, and off-road-focused Rubicon. At launch, all trim levels are powered by Jeep’s familiar 3.6-liter V-6 engine that delivers 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, with an eight-speed automatic available for $2,000 more. Jeep provided an Overland model for on-road driving and a Rubicon for off-roading during the test drive. Being a Jeep, it naturally comes with unsurpassed off-road capabilities, enhanced in the Rubicon model with its standard electronic-locking front and rear axles, Fox monotube shocks, skid plates, the ability to ford up to 30 inches of water, a Rock-Trac part-time four-wheel-drive transfer case, and an optional forward-facing camera for added off-road convenience. The new 2020 Jeep Gladiator is everything you’d expect from a Jeep, plus the added convenience of a truck bed. The combination of genuine Wrangler-rugged Rubicon Trail capability, pickup truck utility, and the uniqueness of a convertible truck with removable doors make it a one-of-a-kind vehicle, perfect for both workday commutes and weekend adventures.

Price as tested: $60,125 (Rubicon); $55,980 (Overland) Engine: 3.6-L V-6 Fuel economy: 17/22 mpg city/ highway Seating: 5 Fab features: The only truck that is also a convertible Unsurpassed off-road capability The cool factor of driving a Jeep

With 9,020 square feet sitting on 2.54 acres, this residence in the gated community of Cantabrica combines privacy with spectacular views of the sprawling mountains. Built in 2013, the technologically outfitted smart home has five bedrooms and eight bathrooms, as well as a stunning outdoor living space that allows for coexisting in harmony with the surrounding desert. Upon entry, travertine flooring tastefully accents cantera stone fireplaces and pillars. The spacious great room features a full-size bar and mechanical pocket doors that frame the picturesque backyard. The kitchen continues the trend of gleaming tile floors, which are accented by complementary granite countertops. It’s completed with state-of-the-art appliances, rustic cabinetry, plenty of prep space, a farmhouse sink, and a breakfast bar for entertaining. Next to the kitchen sits a casual family room with French doors that provide direct access to the outdoor space. Each of the four bedrooms have private travertine bathrooms, walk-in closets, and access to patios. The master suite features an exquisite resort-style bathroom, a private seating area, and an adjacent executive office. The home also contains a media room with theater seating, audiovisual equipment and a kitchenette. One of the most irresistible facets is the outdoor living retreat. A ramada-style covered patio is accented with hand-hewn plank beams and an open fireplace. To the side of the travertine patio is a heated pool and spa with a water feature. The south-facing yard also contains a built-in cooking station and dining area as well as a sprawling grass lawn and garden-inspired landscaping. Also nestled on the property is a separate guesthouse that can double as a poolhouse. Finished in the same manner as the main home, it has its own full bath, kitchenette and sleeping area. CARIBBEAN KING

Cancun showcases the perfection of the Yucatan Peninsula

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS BY LE BLANC RESORT

Located in southeast Mexico on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Cancun boasts 14 miles of white sand beaches, world-class golf and dining, and nightlife options that rival those of Miami or New York. All of that, combined with the fact that it is a mere four-hour direct flight from Phoenix with temperate weather between 70 and 90 degrees most months, makes it a picture-perfect option for travelers from Arizona virtually any time of the year. But the picture-perfect stay requires the picture-perfect accommodations. Enter Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun.

Accommodations After earning five TripAdvisor honors in 2018 – including Best Luxury Hotel in Mexico – as well as taking home a Travvy Gold Award for Best All-inclusive Luxury Resort and earning a spot in U.S. Travel News Report’s Best Hotels in Mexico, Le Blanc Cancun did the unthinkable: it closed. Then, just last month, after nearly a year of multimillion-dollar renovations, the adults-only, all-inclusive resort reopened, revealing stunning upgrades, even by luxury resort standards. The facelift begins upon entering the grand marble and onyx granite-adorned lobby, where guests are greeted with welcome cocktails and escorted to their rooms or suites. The traditional rooms on the property boast plush upgrades to furnishings and decor as well as butler service, 24-hour room service, Apple TVs with access to Netflix and iTunes, whirlpool tubs, Wi-Fi, purified water, and Bvlgari personal products. All guests can also enjoy several unique menus, including those for specialty pillows, bath salts and aromatherapy. Each room is also outfitted with its own liquor dispensers with brand-name labels of whiskey, rum, tequila and vodka (refilled daily as needed). The suites take extravagance even higher, featuring expansive ocean or lagoon views and ranging in size from 460 to nearly 1,000 square feet. In addition to the aforementioned amenities, suite guests can expect an upgraded personal liquor cabinet; French doors to their own private patios; spa-like double showerheads in the bathroom; espresso machines; and nightly goodies including wine, petits fours and more.

Dining Le Blanc took extra care to ensure longtime guests’ favorite eateries stayed true to their roots, while adding new options to wow taste buds on a nightly basis. New to the resort is an elevated take on authentic Mexican fare called Blanc, which was formerly an international restaurant, as well as a Japanese concept called

The decor at Bella – delicate glass art and several chandeliers dripping in crystals – is nearly as elaborate as the multicourse offerings. The most formal restaurant on property is Lumiere, which impresses with nightly tasting menus and wine pairings as well as an inventive cocktail menu.

Activities Speaking of cocktails, all are included with each stay and use topshelf brands ranging from Johnnie Walker red and black labels to Grey Goose, Don Julio and Tanqueray. There are also regular mixology classes several times a week and dozens of wines ranked 80 points or higher available 24 hours a day. It features a sauna, a steam room, an ice room (akin to a cold sauna), Jacuzzis, cold and warm lagoons, warm beds, showers, and private dressing rooms. For those wishing to book a spa service, available for an additional charge, the refurbished treatment suites include a master suite with a hydro-tub, seven couples suites, 11 single suites, one suite with a private Vichy shower, and one golden VIP suite tailor-made for groups. Any guest staying at Le Blanc Cancun can indulge in daily golf at the nearby award-winning Moon Spa & Golf Club, as well as transportation to and from the course and club food and drink options. The club features 27 holes of golf as well as the Moon Palace Golf Academy. There, guests can learn the techniques and playing philosophy of Jack Nicklaus under the guidance of certified instructors and with integrated state-of-the-art technology.

Tours For those seeking a little more adventure during their stay, Le Blanc Cancun offers daytrips, snorkeling excursions, sailing and more for added fees. Of particular note is the resort’s Tulum Express tour, which whisks guests off to the archaeological site of a pre-Colombian Mayan walled city. Those seeking something a little more heart-stopping might opt for the Aquatwister, which is the jet boat ride of a lifetime. The boat spins 270 degrees and flies across the water, taking guests through the emerald green Nichupte Lagoon and mangrove channels as well as offering the opportunity to snorkel. There are also half- and full-day open-water snorkel options, including the chance to snorkel at the nearby Isla Mujeres and swim with dolphins. The concierge team can also customize tours to your group’s tastes and offer recommendations for nearby dining and nightlife options, including the audacious Coco Bongo (expect acrobats, bubbles and explosions), the lavish and glamorous Palazzo Cancun, and the often celebrity-filled Dady’O Cancun. GUYS’ GETAWAY

Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa offers the ultimate “mancation” BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Naples, located on the Gulf of Mexico in southwest Florida, has long been known for its sandy white beaches, high-end shopping and sophisticated dining. But thanks to the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa, it is also an increasingly hot destination for men to get away with the guys. Now through December, the Hyatt is offering an Ultimate Fishing & Golf Experience package starting at $5,000. It begins with upgraded accommodations: two nights in a premium two-bedroom suite for up to four guests with a late checkout time of 3 p.m. There are two types of ultra-premium suites available – Regency or Presidential – ranging from 1,600 to nearly 1,800 square feet. Each has an ample living room, a bar, a patio or balcony, and coastal views. Once situated, the party starts with the guests’ choice of a bottle of Gran Patron Piedra Premium Tequila, made from 100 percent Weber Blue Agave and crafted using a centuries-old process at Hacienda Patron distillery, or Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Scotch Whisky, a limited release personally created by Johnnie Walker Master Blender Dr. Jim Beveridge.

A boxed assortment of Fuente Opus X Lost City cigars – some of the rarest cigars in the world – is also provided to pair with the tequila or whisky. Beyond the suite and specialty amenities, the package also includes a round of golf at the adjacent Raptor Bay Golf Club. Designed by PGA golfer Raymond Floyd, each hole was carefully crafted to blend in with the environment, leaving a beautiful course with natural surroundings. There are no residences allowed to be built on the property, in fact, to ensure that the majesty of the landscape and the course conditions are always of optimal quality. The package also includes a second excursion: a half-day backwater fishing trip! During the trip, guests will enjoy spectacular views of tropical mangroves while being whisked to the captain’s favorite secret spots to reel in any number of local species including mangrove snapper, sheepshead, redfish, snook, tripletail, sea trout and tarpon. Transportation, bait, fishing poles and licenses – as well as an expert guide – are all included. And, if all this isn’t enough, the resort itself has two other distinctive advantages that set it apart from all others in the region: three acres of pools with five waterslides, a zero-entry pool and a lazy river as well as its own tropical island offshore with an hourly boat shuttle so guests can enjoy a tranquil beach within an ecological preserve. There are also several restaurants, bars and lounges on-site, plus the luxurious Stillwater Spa with eco-friendly treatments, fire pits, live music on weekends, a rock-climbing wall, miniature golf, lawn games, and even a boardwalk through a mangrove forest to ensure groups are wellfed and exceptionally entertained 24/7. An added bonus: Frontier Airlines now offers nonstop service to Fort Myers Airport, which is only 20 minutes from the resort. For additional information, visit www.hyattregencycoconutpoint.com.

WHISKEY TALKING “Water of life” for the men in your life

Since the 1490s when it was first developed, whisky – from a Gaelic word meaning “water of life” – has taken many forms: Scotch whisky in Scotland, bourbon whiskey in the American South, and simply whiskey (with an “e”) in much of the rest of North America and Ireland. But no matter where it is made or what it is called, this water of life continues to be one of the most popular spirits in the world.

Crown Royal Texas Mesquite This Canadian whisky is actually Crown Royal Deluxe infused with the smoky soul of Texas-sourced mesquite wood. It begins with a nose of smoke and vanilla as well as a hint of barbecue spice before transitioning into the smooth finish for which Crown is known. $25. OHSO’s D.i.C.K. Whiskey Since 2015, OSHO’s North Scottsdale location has distilled spirits in addition to brewing beer. This fruit-flavored whiskey uses fresh peach extract during distillation, resulting in a sweetness perfect for spring and summer. $25. Adventurous Stills Fossil Creek Whiskey Adventurous Stills makes every product by hand in its custom-fabricated stills located in Tempe. This full-bodied whiskey is made in charred American white oak barrels and evokes notes of leather, butterscotch and sitting in front of a campfire. $35. Clyde May’s Rye Whiskey After being wounded in WWII, Clyde May became a famous for his Alabama-inspired take on whiskey in the 1940s. May’s rye option is as adventurous as he was, with bright florals, honeysuckle and apricot on the nose and spice and citrus on the palate. $36.99. Bulleit Bourbon Barrel Strength Whiskey A double gold medalist at the 2018 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, this Kentucky-made bourbon whiskey has gentle spiciness and sweet oak aromas. Expect flavors of maple, oak and nutmeg followed by a satiny finish dotted with toffee. $57.

Oban Distillers Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky Oban Distillery, just steps from the Atlantic Ocean in Scotland, has been renowned worldwide for more than 200 years. With varietals like this – bursting with butterscotch, toffee and caramel, with a backbone of sea salt and a smoky-sweet finish – it’s easy to see why. $100. Talisker 18-Year-Old Scotch Whisky Rugged and powerful, this award-winning scotch whisky has both sweetness and warmth. It starts with notes of plum and dried orange peel, then transitions to rum toffee and deep smokiness followed by an ever-so-subtle touch of mint. $150. John Walker & Sons King George V Scotch Whisky This Johnnie Walker special-edition liquor commemorates the brand being made the whisky supplier to the British Royal household in 1934. It was created using only the finest whiskies from distilleries that operated during King George’s reign in the first half of the 20th century. Complex and opulent, it tastes of roasted nuts, rich chocolate, and sweet smokiness combined with honey and citrus. $600. Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey Rich and flavorful, this whiskey was born of a California bartender’s love for whiskey (obviously) and peanut butter. And though he initially developed it as a shot, its legend grew so fast that he eventually partnered with his wife and friends to develop their own wholly new brand in 2018. $27.99.

Starlite BBQ’s aim with weekend brunch, served Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is to marry its Nashville, Texas and Southwestern-inspired barbecue specialties with morning favorites from across the country. Its Cast Iron Green Chili Pork ($12), for example, is an homage to the Frito pie, which originated in Texas. The team smokes pork shoulder with green chilies and tomatillos for six hours before pulling the meat off the bone and placing it into an iron skillet. They then add cilantro to the leftover smoked chilies and tomatillos, layering the mixture over the pork along with fresh pico de gallo before loading the skillet with Fritos and a homemade cheddar cheese sauce. The skillet is briefly placed in the oven, then the dish is topped with a fried egg and spicy jalapenos before serving. Starlite BBQ, 7620 E. The Phoenician Tavern’s Smoked Watermelon is a smoldering, spicy surprise

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

The Phoenician Tavern at The Phoenician Golf Clubhouse marks the completion of the final phase of the property’s multimillion-dollar transformation over more than three years. “The aim for the entire resort reimagining – but especially with The Phoenician Tavern – has been to create the most approachable, relaxed experience possible for guests, keeping both locals and tourists in mind,” says Lisa Mercer, director of food and beverage. The new hot spot, which opened in March, has indoor and outdoor seating with contemporary decor and expansive views. It offers 12 local and regional craft brews on tap, plus nearly 50 canned and bottled offerings as well as a completely new lineup of signature cocktails. “We have a good mix of traditional drinks as well as ramped up recipes for the more daring at the table,” Mercer says. “The Smoked Watermelon ($13) certainly falls into the more daring category.” The cocktail begins by muddling jalapenos and mint in a shaker before adding Sombra Mezcal, which is known for its rich smokiness and clear notes of black pepper, toffee and nuttiness. “We then puree freshly cut watermelon and it add to the shaker along with ice and lime juice, which is meant to bring out the flavor of watermelon while giving acid for balance,” Mercer says. The contents are double-strained into a coupe glass that’s rimmed with smoked sea salt and garnished with a slice of jalapeno. “The jalapeno hits you first, followed by the smoke on the glass and in the mezcal,” Mercer says. “It is rounded out by the refreshing sweetness of the watermelon.” The Phoenician Tavern, 6000 E. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Zack Riddell of The Mission

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

In April, Zack Riddell was named executive chef of The Mission, both its Old Town Scottsdale and its Kierland Commons locations. He specializes in dreaming up modern twists to classic Southern and Central American cuisine.

Building menus, it seems, was not your initial plan? I was supposed to be building, well, buildings. I originally studied architecture while in community college in upstate New York. But after landing a gig at a college bar and then a position as a cook at Cornell University, I was hooked. I – with the help of my mentors – applied and was accepted to the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in New York in 2006, where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in restaurant management in 2010. Where did you get your start after CIA? At The Mission! In 2010, I followed my brother, who had moved here prior. I still remember interviewing in a full suit, a standard look in New York that had me stick out like a sore (but fashionable) thumb in the Valley. I started with owner Matt Carter as a line cook, eventually rising up to chef, then chef de cuisine, and now executive chef. What can guests expect at The Mission? We are neither a traditional Mexican food restaurant nor a “Tex-Mex” concept. We take our inspiration from across Latin America – think anywhere from Peru and Argentina to Mexico and Brazil – and use elevated techniques to deliver something truly different to guests’ tables. What is your favorite Latin American ingredient? I love dried chilies. We use them in nearly all of our sauces and soups daily. Every single one has different aromatics, a variant heat level, and a wildly unique flavor profile. Learning about them is also a lifelong process, as there are 25 commonly used varieties, but an estimated 2,500-plus variations being cultivated today. What would readers be surprised to know about you? I am a level 1 sommelier who is currently obsessed with sauvignon blanc from New Zealand and Chablis from France. End NEW IN TOWN

WINE THAT ROCKS Merkin Vineyards Old Town opens in Scottsdale

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

In 2004, Arizona’s wine-growing industry was still in its infancy with just a handful of vineyards, mostly in Southern Arizona’s Willcox and Sonoita regions. Enter Maynard James (MJ) Keenan who, at the time, was better-known as the front man for the bands Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. A U.S. Army veteran and a Grammy Award-winning vocalist, Keenan grew up in Michigan working on orchards and farms. When he moved to Jerome, Arizona, in 1995, his passion for working the land continued and he became interested in winemaking. By 2004, he launched his first label, Caduceus Cellars, and opened an accompanying tasting room in Jerome. Keenan soon gained a following for his earthy varietals, helping earn the Arizona wine industry acclaim along the way. “Our Southwest wines have an identity,” Keenan says. “They stand apart from other regions and our state producers have received countless awards to prove it. Those international accolades started rolling in once we embraced the fact that Mother Nature is in charge. We molded our practices to reflect her movements,

and that is when the region truly began to express through our wines.” In 2005, the first Merkin Vineyards label appeared with a limited release of its Chupacabra. A decade later, Merkin Vineyards opened a second tasting room located in Cottonwood, Arizona. And now, Keenan has moved into the Valley with the launch of his first wine bar – Merkin Vineyards Old Town – this past spring. “In order to truly understand Arizona wines, we feel it is essential to visit these magical regions,” Keenan says. “However, not everyone has the time to visit these semi-remote areas, including our vineyards in Northern and Southern Arizona. As such, Merkin Old Town is meant to be an introduction to and extension of that magic.” The space itself, formerly home to Counter Intuitive, is 1,600 square feet and seats about 75 people. By design, Merkin is within walking distance from LDV Winery, Carlson Creek and Aridus Wine Company’s tasting rooms, making it a mini wine trail. Merkin Vineyards Old Town offers wine by the glass and bottle, as well as Arizona craft beers and nonalcoholic options. There is also an impressive food menu developed by executive chef Dirk Flanigan that’s focused on vegetable-driven tapas as well as cheese and charcuterie plates. Most of the dairy, fruits and vegetables are farmed in Merkin Vineyard’s Verde Valley greenhouses, gardens and orchards – otherwise, they are sourced from local Arizona farmers. A storefront section of the bar is stocked with wines under the Caduceus, Merkin Vineyards and Puscifer labels; other featured Arizona wines; and a revolving supply of sundries from Keenan’s farms, including olives, apple butter and jam. Merkin is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Merkin Vineyards Old Town, 7133 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale; 480.912.1027; www.merkinoldtownscottsdale.com.
