The Kentucky Derby Is Over. Improved Odds During Divorce Are Not.

When the challenges of divorce come your way wouldn’t it be nice to have someone on your side who knows the odds? Someone who knows the difference between a long shot and a sure thing. Kaine Fisher, Director of Rose Law Group’s Family Law practice, and his team including Kimberlee Nelson and Audra Petrolle, understand what’s needed to get you first across the finish line. And when you think of it horse racing can be a lot like divorce. A race where experience and discipline matter. So if you want someone who knows the odds, with the right experience to get you to the Winner’s Circle, give us a call.

BEAUTY

Carla Pelosi

a golden touch: Boutiques and Bronzing BY BRITTANY MARONEY

S

he’s a familiar face to the loyal patrons of Sachi Studios. A sage voice among the racks of couture clothes specially shipped in to her shop Boutique Bully, from cities like Los Angeles, Miami and New York. Carla Pelosi is also a trusted ally when it comes to looking fantastic, often giving great advice on the perfect cut and the most flattering tailoring. It’s just the type of confidant the fashionable ladies of North Scottsdale need when looking to get primped and dressed to perfection. “My loyal customers are women that lead

busy lives, but need to look good doing it,” says Pelosi. “I am honored that they trust me to always provide them a great selection of cutting edge apparel that makes them feel confident, young, and ready to take on the world. I think they love my attention to detail and how I never have the same selection week-overweek. Everything I choose to place on my racks is beautiful and unique. Just like the women that frequent my boutique.” It has always been Pelosi’s passion to make women feel youthful and beautiful, so when a few of her loyal clientele confided

in her their difficulties with getting the perfect spray tan, she stood up and took notice. Just a few years earlier her family had experienced a devastating loss due to melanoma, a type of skin cancer. A staunch advocate against the damaging effects of sun rays, she knew there had to be alternatives. After a relentless search she found an amazing solution to the current modern day spray tan. An option that was void of the long-lasting chemical smell so prevalent in spray tanning, as well as being organic, gluten-free, paraben-free, and vegan. The revolutionary spray gun technology allows Pelosi to spray up to 6 inches away from the skin, creating a sculpting effect, and never

spots or runs. It’s guaranteed to be the best spray tan you’ve ever had. “When women feel their best they can focus on the things that matter most, whether that’s their family, their profession or their passions,” says Pelosi. “The last thing they should worry about is how they look. It’s incredible to free them up from those concerns and send them off with an air of confidence. That’s when I know I truly have done my job.” To learn more about Boutique Bully, visit www. boutiquebully.com or to setup an appointment with a Bronzed by Bully spray tan you can text (602) 410-8818 or book on www.bronzedbybully.com. Be sure to ask about the special offer for first-time customers.

Parisian

Perfection A one-on-one interview with renowned French stylist Jo, owner of Jo Paris Salon

J

o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color

line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

Jo Paris Salon & Spa is located at 14202 N. Scottsdale Rd. and at (480) 663-8994 or visit their website at www.joparissalon.com

TELL

Every June, we celebrate men in our annual man issue, from stylish dads (page 51) to businessowners you should know (pages 31, 34 and 36) to all things manly, fatherly and so “Dad.” You may recognize the men on our cover, who, in a fitting tribute to Father’s Day, are the men (a father and two sons) behind such locally loved restaurants as Dominick’s Steakhouse, Steak 44, Ocean 44 (a luxe seafood concept set to open in November), and, of course, the brand that started it all – which they have since sold – Mastro’s. On page 46, meet Dennis, Mike and Jeff Mastro, who are truly the maestros of culinary legend, and read about their journey in the hospitality industry for the last 40 years. In honor of Father’s Day, we rounded up plenty of experiences and gift ideas for the man in your life. Take Dad to a cool distillery (page 104), find him the perfect big boy beer (page 106), treat him to meals made for a man (pages 68, 107 and 122), or help him spruce up his office with some dude-approved decor (page 90). Is he a boat enthusiast, or maybe a jack-of-all-trades? Gift him with a watch tailor-made for yachtsmen (page 89) or a not-your-average toolbox handmade from sustainably sourced Swiss wood (page 99). And men, we don’t stop there. Shed your dad bod with some supercool workouts (page 80), shake up your usual guys’ night out (page 84), and harness your inner cowboy (we know you have one) on page 82. With that, let’s raise a glass to the dads – on June 17, all month and all year – for all that they do and all that they are (that includes you, Dad!). BRANDING FOR THE PEOPLE

Entrepreneur Matt Gottesman helps businesses and communities thrive in a new age of marketing

Matt Gottesman is not afraid to be different, bold or daring. In fact, he thrives on it. Where a business or entity may not fully grasp its branding potential or understand its available technological capabilities and reach, Gottesman and his partners fill in the gaps to bring a business to the forefront and create massive

impact. He’s on the cutting-edge of ideology and technology, ultimately assisting businesses with strategic branding and marketing in the digital space. High-profile projects completed by Gottesman include work with the World Trade Centers Association and Louis Vuitton

So Scottsdale! June ‘18

Pulse UP CLOSE Moet Hennessy for KRUG Champagne and Ruinart Champagne. Additionally, he participates with Phoenix Fashion Week on the Style Council Board and also advises with several local companies in the health and wellness space. Gottesman has a deep understanding of the digital and tech world and works with companies from all angles in order to get the desired outcome, and then some. “This is about taking their business and understanding where they need to go with it,” Gottesman says. “Companies get stuck. So, usually I’ll come in with partners and we try to take companies into the seven-figure range and try to get them to $50 million. Branding is about positioning yourself in the market for intentional growth.” Gottesman originally hails from New Jersey and spent his formative years in Tucson attending high school and then the University of Arizona before eventually moving to Scottsdale to get his MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management. Shortly after graduating, Gottesman moved through an unforeseen divorce, setting him on a new course that brought purpose and passion into business, especially after a discussion with his father. Gottesman shares, “My father said, ‘If I were to give you any advice, you are 35 years old and if I were you, I’d start running your own race. Do it your way and the way you would envision your life.’ That really hit my soul.” From that point forward, Gottesman surrounded himself with purpose-driven and intentional people he believed to be successful – personally, spiritually and professionally. He then set out to create a digital media company, launching Hustle & Deal Flow magazine to highlight the journey (not the end result) of entrepreneurship and oneself, a brand which, at the time, had only 500 followers on social media and now resonates daily to more than 200,000 subscribers. Through this, Gottesman redefined his course and began connecting with thousands of people all over the world, some of whom would become his eventual business partners, such as Case Kenny, the founder of www.prsuit.com. Together, the two merged their publications and formed a bigger media company (Trep Media Group), founding a podcast titled The Hustle Sold Separately, which engages with some of the world’s most purposeful entrepreneurs, creators, artists, musicians and entertainers.

On the Rise Gottesman’s remarkable rise also gave way to the meeting of Adam and Matthew Toren. The two quickly became his righthand mentors and consulting and investing partners. With their combined media, marketing, sales, customer acquisition and tech backgrounds, the three of them meticulously inspect every aspect of a business so they know exactly what they need to do to grow a company the proper way, technologically and operationally, from the inside out. “I feel like that in anything we do, in business or in life, we must do it with purpose and intention,” Gottesman says. “I’m very fortunate that we’ve created a media company that impacts the

32

So Scottsdale! June ‘18

world to think outside the box, create new ideas, operate from their true selves, and be leaders in their own visions. To me, that’s purpose and intention.” Other key areas Gottesman also optimizes with companies he works with include growth marketing, driving and funneling sales, operational and technological logistics of how sales are handled, infrastructure, personnel and customer engagement. Understanding and tracking metrics is also paramount. “We’re almost like venture capitalists from the standpoint that we come in with multiple talent and resources to make that happen,” he says. “We’re taking a company and making it so unbelievably valuable in the eyes of the people it targets that it grows sales, valuation and the market position locally, nationally and internationally.” So, why did Gottesman take a chance on redefining media, and, moreover, what is his “why” for doing what he does? “The most important thing I can do is to operate from a set of values that truly define who I am,” Gottesman says. “Knowing this and acting from this has made all the difference in my life and in the choices I make. “We all want to be understood, whether that’s your business, your brand or your life in general. Once you align why you’re doing what you’re doing and who you’re doing it for, magic happens. The dream is free but the alignment is sold separately.” Learn more about Gottesman and his work at www.mattgottesman.com.

A Connoisseur of Color Rodney Gentry, stylist and color expert at Sachi Studios

Rodney Gentry is one of those people whose Midwestern charm and enthusiasm can’t help but rub off on you. And in his line of work, that’s certainly a plus. Gentry is possibly the Valley’s most adored hair stylist. His clients (some of them might better be described as fans) will happily travel across state lines in order to have him handle their tresses. Many of them simply trust nobody else with their hair. Having operated his own salon in Chicago before relocating to Scottsdale, Gentry brings big city expertise to the Valley, which he combines with his own unique passion for styling and coloring at Sachi Studios. Each client enjoys a truly personalized service. Gentry considers the condition and history of the hair before recommending a treatment program, style and (if desired) color. His focus is on nurturing hair back to full health at the same time as providing stunning styles and fabulous colors. “It’s my goal to make each client feel truly beautiful – and to leave them with a style that they can easily recreate themselves every day,” he says. Part of this comes down to the right products. Gentry only uses the very

best brands available, not skimping when it comes to choosing those products that will bring about dramatic improvements in the hair’s condition. This applies to everything, from daily shampoos to the color treatments that he uses, which are enzyme-based rather than peroxide-based. This means they enhance the condition of the hair as well as give it a wonderfully vibrant color. Color is Gentry’s true passion. From full hair makeovers to the subtlest of highlights or lowlights, he works with his clients to select the colors that are right for their skin tone, the shape of their face and even their preferred color of clothing. “Every single person is unique in their coloring, which is why personalized consultation is so important,” he explains. “You really have to care about each and every client in order to bring out the best in their hair. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to beautiful hair!” Gentry also believes that it is important to stay abreast of trends. From the Oscars to the latest catwalk shows, he’s up to speed with seasonal styles and colors in order to enable each of his clients to achieve a touch of Hollywood

glamour. From super straight blonde locks to superbly highlighted plaits with the tiniest of accessories woven in, Gentry is available to provide advice and guidance on how those in the Valley can look their very best this summer, both color-wise and style-wise. THE BOSSES ARE IN

Co-owners of Detail Boss Chris and Christian Parker specialize in fine-tuning toys

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Brothers Chris and Christian Parker, the duo behind Detail Boss – a detailing specialist for cars and even boats and aircrafts – grew up around cars with an appreciation that began thanks to their father’s love of sports cars. “We were studying for our finals in nursing school when Christian looked up at me and said, ‘Do we really want to do this for the rest of our lives?’ At that moment, we closed our books and started brainstorming until Christian thought of the idea to start a detailing business,” Chris says. Since 2011, the brothers have been detailing cars and offering services that include advanced paint correction, ceramic coating, and interior deep cleaning at their shop in North Scottsdale. From a basic express detail option to an all-out show-car finish, Detail Boss aims to deliver superior automotive services to everyone from high-profile athletes to moms with more Goldfish crackers under the seats than you can count. The Parkers focus on pairing their customers’ needs with a package that suits their budget and desires. Whether you are in charge of the soccer carpool or you’re looking to maintain your exotic car’s sheen, Detail Boss has a variety of offerings. “I think what sets us apart from others is our continued education, certifications and skill level,” Chris says. To that effect, Detail Boss is a member of the International Detailing Association, and the Parkers continue their education each year through classes to stay up to date with industry trends. Detailing is especially important as the auto industry continues to change. Vehicles have made significant advances in the last 30 years – such as soft leather, electronics and information screens – that require the specialized TLC given by Detail Boss. “We are very proud of the opportunities we’ve been blessed with including detailing for NASCAR and the Indy Car Series, being six-time members of the Air Force One Detail Team, and detailing dozens of classic cars in preparation for the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, to name a few,” Chris says. The Parkers are also part of the official Gordon McCall Detailing Team and have worked on multi-million-dollar automobiles such as the Koenigsegg Agera, McLaren P1, Pagani, and classic Ferrari GTO. AT YOUR SERVICE

Kevin Berk prioritizes hospitality and the customer experience

BY BRITTANY MARONEY / PHOTO BY JAMES PATRICK

We all have certain preferences when we dine out, but Kevin Berk took his passion for service one step further. Always a serial entrepreneur, young Berk was known for his lemonade stands and paper routes. It wasn’t until later in life when he launched ServiceGuru (www.serviceguru.com) that he was able to blend his acute sensitivity for dining experiences with his love of owning his own business. ServiceGuru is a hospitality-based platform that allows customers to rate staff based on the overall service experience. Restaurateurs get real-time updates about how the daily shifts and staff perform from the people who matter the most – their customers. “I truly love to take care of people and turn a negative experience into a positive one,” Berk says. “Not only does everyone in the organization learn from these experiences, but there is also the opportunity to earn the guest’s trust back. There are a lot of platforms focused on the holistic experience, but really none that are focused on customer retention. I believe more businesses should work to create customer loyalty.” Even the restaurant staff can benefit from the service provided by Berk. The reviews that the employees receive go into their “Service Resume,” which they can show and share so that future employers can see the qualitative results of their serving experience. “It’s no longer a letter of reference. It’s 175 customer reviews showing others that someone takes great pride in his or her work,” Berk says. “I believe the bond that is created when you show you care from a service standpoint is stronger than anything. I would say it can even supersede a positive dining experience.” Berk stays busy monitoring and managing ServiceGuru for Pita Jungle, locally owned Ace Hardware stores, 4C Medical Group, and his family-run indoor climbing gym, AZ on the Rocks. He also somehow juggles a family of nine. His sage advice as the man of the house? “Always be kind, don’t be afraid to ask for help, and always say thank you,” Berk says. “True hospitality starts in the home, and that’s the best place to teach others the true meaning of service.”

Pulse HIS STYLE

BEHIND THE MUSIC Oleg Shvets keeps his look contemporary and classic

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

As the executive director of Phoenix Boys Choir, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary season this year, Oleg Shvets is on a mission to provide musical training to children across the Valley free of charge. Whether he’s spearheading the choir’s latest fundraising endeavor or managing the organization’s educational outreach, Shvets favors a contemporary, clean style. In his profession, Shvets often attends elegant events so his closet is stocked with dress shirts, ties, sports coats, and suits to support his career and adoration for dressing up. Though, a few years ago, it was actually the cheeky romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love that caused Shvets to reinvent himself. “I watched the movie and was inspired by Gosling’s character to change everything about myself from the way I looked to what I wore and even what I drank.” With that new perspective, Shvets sticks to solid colors that compliment his complexion. “I like Kenneth Cole and INC International Concepts because of the fit, the fabric and the classic, fresh look of the styles,” Shvets says. Another rule of thumb for the man behind the music is to always finish his look with a watch. “Being on time is equally important as being stylish in this industry.”

What is your most prized possession in your closet? My limited-edition Lamborghini Speedlink chronograph watch. What would someone say if they looked at your closet? Man, that’s a lot of dry cleaning! What is your No. 1 tip when it comes to style? You don’t have to spend a ton of money to look good – no one is looking at your labels.

EVERY DAY IS A RUNWAY Fashion savvy is the name of the game for stylist Nicole Overman

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

She’s the woman behind some of the most stylish personalities in town, but stylist Nicole Overman has a distinctive designer style all her own. Taking inspiration from her customers, she proudly pours her heritage and emotions into every look she curates for herself and her style icons, better known to her as her clients. “I love to help them discover who they are and who they want to be,” Overman says. “Style is your soul on the outside of your body, and I adore helping my clients make that discovery.” As a go-to fashion guru, Overman values stepping out in style for every occasion. Whether she’s draped in a signature Dolce & Gabbana leopard print blouse at her job as a highly sought-after Nordstrom stylist or grabbing coffee in a red leather shift dress and Gucci flats, she notes that it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. “What’s the worst thing someone could say?” she notes. “‘You look fantastic, or I love your shoes.’” When she’s not sporting her signature power color (red), Nicole trades her dry clean-only weekday wardrobe for momchic, toddler-proof ensembles. Her go-to? A comfy, all-black Adidas dress – a fitting choice for Overman, who says, “My favorite color is black. Matte black, shiny black, and blackest black.”

How does your career influence your style? I have a career where I get to wear beautiful pieces of art, and my job lets me explore my emotions through a nonverbal channel. Can you share some style advice? You are the only one seeing the pieces in your closet and the world is craving beautiful things – wear your clothes! What is your most prized possession in your closet? My Chanel pearls were a gift from my parents that I wore to my wedding. Every time I wear them, I’m reminded of all the love in my life.

Growing up in New Jersey, Dennis Mastro dreamt of becoming an attorney. “What I didn’t dream about was all that extra schooling it would take – the idea of that was more of a nightmare,” says Dennis, who got a job working at a radio station while in college deciding on his career path. “I worked on the air as a late-night disc jockey playing, of all things, classical music.” Between his late-night gig and daytime classes, Dennis also managed to find love. “I was on a student tour in Europe when I met an amazing Canadian girl named Jane. That was more than 52 years ago, and we’ve been together ever since, having four children along the way,” Dennis says. He eventually began selling advertising for the station, finding so much success that he was able to purchase a piece of the company upon graduation. Among his best clients: restaurants. “I fell in love with restaurants almost immediately, eventually moving to Las Vegas to make my way in the culinary world in the mid-1970s,” says Dennis, whose wife similarly loved the industry but not raising kids in Vegas. “So, we moved to nearby Scottsdale to plant our roots in 1976.” The Mastro family’s first foray into the Arizona restaurant business came thanks to a tennis club. “When we moved here, our family joined Scottsdale Park, a then-tennis club on Hayden and McDonald,” Dennis says. “When it fell into financial trouble, they asked me to step in, so I bought the space and transformed it into a casual steakhouse called What’s Your Beef in 1978.” The steakhouse would go on to become a legendary hot spot throughout the 1970s and 80s. Its success inspired the family to open Barnacle Bill’s, which combined two restaurant concepts under one roof, then Marco Polo Supper Club, a mainstay of the culinary scene for decades located at Pima Road and Shea Boulevard. During this same time, Mastro’s oldest son, Mike, showed an interest in joining the family business, as did the family’s unofficial “adopted” son, Scotty Troilo, who met the family in 1978 at just 19 years old when he applied for a job at What’s Your Beef.

48

So Scottsdale! June ‘18

“Scotty has been with our family since nearly day one,” Dennis says. He made Troilo a full partner in the business by 1985, along with Mike, and Troilo would then go on to lead the charge in opening another concept: Maloney’s Tavern. The traditional pub-meets-energetic-dance club concept, which launched in 1991, became one of the most successful bar brands in Arizona for 25 years, at one time boasting nine locations nationwide. “But even after all of this, into the mid1990s we still hadn’t made our way into the high-end steakhouse business,” says Mike, who spent copious years studying the well-known “chain” steakhouses popping up in the area. “Finally, in 1999, we made the jump, opening the first Mastro’s Steakhouse on Pinnacle Peak and Pima.” Quickly, the high-end menu and wine program made headlines across the Valley and beyond. “Most locals don’t know this, but we actually opened our second Mastro’s in Beverly Hills, which turned into somewhat of a kismet moment, despite the fact we opened the week before the 9/11 attacks,” Mike says. He also helped develop Mastro’s City Hall and Mastro’s Ocean Club concepts in Scottsdale in the early 2000s.

ALL IN THE FAMILY By then, the final piece of the puzzle also fell into place: Jeff Mastro, the company’s current CEO. “Though my dad never ended up in law, I initially did,” says Jeff, who worked as an attorney at Bryan Cave in Phoenix before jumping into the family business. “I began just doing legal work for [Mastro’s], but soon found myself standing side by side with my dad, Mike and Scotty as a full partner.” The decade-plus since Jeff came on board has been a whirlwind for the family. After opening several more Mastro’s concepts, including locations in Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and Thousand Oaks, California, the family sold the brand in 2007. “We never planned to get out of the business, just to start looking at new ways to spread our wings,” Mike says. “The first move post-sale was one of the most special to our family – opening Dominick’s

Steakhouse at Scottsdale Quarter in 2012.” Named in homage to Dennis’ father, Dominick Mastro, the ultra-luxe steak and seafood venue boasts one of the most popular and opulent bars in Arizona as well as an open-air dining option on the roof, complete with a pool serving as the centerpiece of the space.

SCOTTSDALE FASHION SQUARE APPROACHED US ABOUT BRINGING THE CONCEPT TO THE AREA AS PART OF THEIR MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR FACELIFT. OUR PLAN IS TO BLOW PEOPLE AWAY WITH A SEDUCTIVE AND DRAMATIC, YET WARM, SPACE AND SPECTACULAR SEAFOOD, ALONG WITH OUR GREAT STEAK. Less than a year later, Mike was buzzing past the old Cork ’n Cleaver space on 44th Street and Camelback Road in Arcadia – a space as iconic as the family’s What’s Your Beef back in the day – and saw a fire left it devastated, but now available for a new tenant. “I got on the phone that minute, calling the listed landlord to make a pitch for the space, along with hundreds of others who’d done the same,” Mike says. “But we had an ace in the hole. As it turned out, the landlord was housed next door to the Beverly Hills Mastro’s, and he was a fan. Kismet.”

By 2014, the family worked with top designers and chefs to transform the fire-ravaged space into a warm, approachable steakhouse, yet with all the bells and whistles they’d become known for over the past four decades. They named it Steak 44. Lauded since its inception for its open kitchen, Instagram-worthy wall of cleavers, cutting-edge cocktails, and, of course, its prime cuts of meat, Steak 44 marked a new era for the Mastro family. In recent years, they expanded the brand to Houston and Chicago, calling those locales Steak 48, and by the end of this year, they will expand the family business once again with their latest brand, Ocean 44. “Scottsdale Fashion Square approached us about bringing the concept to the area as part of their multi-million-dollar facelift,” Jeff says. “They’ve agreed to locate us in the freestanding space formerly home to Harkins Theatres Camelview 5. Our plan is to blow people away with a seductive and dramatic, yet warm, space and spectacular seafood, along with our great steak.” So, with all this going on, how does the family spend its spare time? By giving back. “We started really focusing on giving back in the early 2000s, with The Foundation for Blind Children as our initial partner. My godson was born blind, so the cause was a personal passion of ours,” Mike says. “We quickly expanded our reach, both by hosting signature events – some of which raised nearly a million dollars in a single night – for the foundation as well as Phoenix Children’s Hospital, The Larry Fitzgerald First Down Fund, Arians Family Foundation and many more, as well as making donations to causes that touched us.” And while the family hasn’t kept exact track of its fundraising work, they estimate they’ve raised and donated several million dollars for those in need across Arizona, and similar amounts in any state where they have a presence. “While we’ve never put pen to paper and tallied up our charitable works, in Scottsdale alone we are proud to have been a part of several million dollars in giving back to others – really, to our extended family in a way – in need,” Troilo says. “Because that is just what you do.”

Mike PRIVERT Children: Lucas, 8 months Occupation: Owner of Speks What’s a typical day like for you? The day always starts at 5 a.m. trying to sneak in a little mediation, a walk for the dogs, or work before everyone in the house gets up. With running a business, the workday is always packed with meetings, client follow-ups, and putting out fires. Typically, I'm home by 6 p.m., and each night I get to put my son to bed with a bottle and a book. Best thing about being a dad: Working with my wife on raising a great son and actively participating in his development and growth. What activities do you enjoy doing with Lucas? Every Saturday, Lucas and I get to spend the entire day together, just the two of us, so we get to grow and bond with one another. Also, nightly family walks with our two cocker spaniels, Bella and Marley. Describe your style: Clean, classic and sharp. What’s your go-to look? A button-down shirt, dress pants, and lace-up Oxford shoes. Must-have item: Hanz de Fuko Claymation hair wax. What is your top fashion indulgence? A tailored slim-fit suit. Favorite brands: Bonobos, Hugo Boss and Banana Republic. Most prized possession in your closet: A T-shirt from my time working at the CIA. What do you hope Lucas learns from you? How to be a great husband and father. How do you balance work and fatherhood? I really look at work and fatherhood as two integrated parts. Being a father and running a business are a reciprocal relationship that I’m always working on.

James HOLMES Children: Jon Zachary (JZ), 3 Occupation: Psychologist in public service and private practice What’s a typical day like for you? I finish my CrossFit workout before the sun comes up, get ready before anyone else in my house, tell my son and wife goodbye, and head to work. In the evenings, I love to spend time kicking the soccer ball with my son or having a date night with my wife, then I catch up on the news and sports and check my email one more time. Best thing about being a dad: Hearing my son say, “I love you, Daddy” and giving me a hug. What activities do you enjoy doing with JZ? JZ is at a fun age where I can teach him sports. I enjoy taking him on a stroll in his wagon, playing at the park, cheering him on at swimming or karate class, and, most recently, hunting invisible zombies around the house. Describe your style: Tailored, versatile and comfortable. What’s your go-to look? On the weekends, you can find me in a slim-fit V-neck, joggers, and slip-on shoes. However, Monday through Friday is a bit more refined. Must-have item: A nice watch. What are your top fashion indulgences? A stylish bow tie, nice shoes and a laundered, slim-fit dress shirt. Favorite brands: Lululemon and Mack Weldon. Most prized possession in your closet: A classic pair of shiny, black Versace loafers. What do you hope JZ learns from you? How to be kind and respectful toward others. How do you balance work and fatherhood? I think it’s important to separate work and family life as much as possible. I try to put the computer and phone away, pay attention, make eye contact, and engage with my son. It’s not always easy, but, ultimately, your family is more important than any work-related email, text message, or phone call.

Stephen HERMAN Children: Grant, 2 Occupation: Vice president of Capital Asset Management What’s a typical day like for you? I’m up early to make sure I get some morning playtime with my son before I head to the office. Then it’s meetings throughout the day, the gym during lunchtime when I can, and home at night for a family walk with the dog before bathtime and bedtime stories. Best thing about being a dad: Watching my son’s expression when he experiences something new for the very first time. And then hearing the words “I did it” once he figures out how to do something on his own. It’s the best. What activities do you enjoy doing with Grant? Anything involving sports. My son is only 2 years old and he already loves golf and basketball. Describe your style: Comfortable yet sophisticated. What’s your go-to look? A dark blazer with a tailored dress shirt, jeans and my favorite Wolf & Shepherd dress shoes. Must-have item: My Ray-Ban sunglasses. I take them everywhere with me. My day consists of everything real estate: negotiating offers for clients, procuring new luxury listings, evangelizing The Agency brand, and helping agents within our organization reach their goals. After work, I typically meet up with friends and family for casual dinners while some days require me to attend events representing the brand. Best thing about being a dad: At this stage in parenting, it’s watching my children accomplish the goals I remembered them setting as young children and morph into young adults. What activities do you enjoy doing with your children? We enjoy our monthly family dinner. With all of us having such busy schedules, it’s great to get together for drinks and laughs and to catch up about life. Describe your style: Casual and chic. I like to mix it up and be creative. How do you balance work and fatherhood? It is a constant struggle! My family is very patient with me when I have to work late or travel, but when I am with them, I try to focus on them and put work aside. I treasure the 20 minutes driving my daughter to school every day and time spent coaching my son’s basketball teams.

PWESTBROOKS hillip Vidal Children: Jaden, 14 Occupation: President and CEO of Spectrum Solutions Inc. What’s a typical day like for you? I start off by meditating, reviewing my goals and vision board, working out, and having breakfast with my son before I take him to school. Best thing about being a dad: Observing my son develop into a young man and seeing his personality. What activities do you enjoy doing with Jaden? Sports, movies, traveling, watching music videos, and spending time with family and friends. We especially enjoy Christmastime activities together. Describe your style: Elegant, progressive and fun. What’s your go-to look? For fun, it’s jeans, a shirt and a sports coat accessorized with designer sneakers or designer shoes. For business, it’s a suit and a crisp white button-down shirt. What do you hope Jaden learns from you? Always show love and respect for yourself and others, believe in yourself, always do your best, and no excuses! How do you balance work and fatherhood? God, family, friends and work – in that order! Taking 15 to 20 minutes to meditate and setting goals with specific action plans keeps the balance. I use the “Ultimate Success Formula” by Tony Robbins for both personal and business inspiration and goals.

Best thing about being a dad: Watching Rhyann discover new things that make her happy. Reading her some of my favorite stories I read as a kid is a close second. They’re highly motivated, results-oriented and successful at a young age. And if you’re in the market to buy or sell a home, they’re the people you want on your side. They’re the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors’ 40 Under 40, honored last month for a combination of their business success, professional leadership, community engagement, and industry involvement. Here, we spotlight five of these high-performing young professionals to watch in 2018 and beyond for their community contributions and real estate savvy.

Honorable Transactions

Lisa Roberts emphasizes integrity

L

isa Roberts, who recently joined Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty after a successful career with Re/Max Excalibur, has been selling residential real estate for seven years and is among the top 75 of more than 57,000 licensed agents in Arizona. She graduated from Arizona State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in business and psychology. Just one year into her real estate career, Roberts closed more than 85 transactions and had $4.8 million in sales. Since then, the New York native, who has lived in Scottsdale for 17 years, has doubled her volume sold each year. To date, she’s closed more than 300 transactions and had upward of $200 million in sales, specializing in luxury homes in the Scottsdale zip codes of 85259 and 85260. “I live and breathe real estate and do whatever it takes to represent my clients,” says Roberts, who is also a tour director of the Scottsdale Area Association

of Realtors’ (SAAR) Scottsdale Luxury Home Tour. “To represent my clients in the most important financial transaction they will ever make is something I do not take lightly.” And the proof is evident. In 2015, Roberts received national recognition by Realtor Magazine as 30 Under 30 and has been named 40 Under 40 in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 by the Southeast Valley Association of Realtors’ and SAAR. In 2016, Roberts was a recipient of the prestigious Re/Max Hall of Fame award and inducted into the Re/Max Chairman’s Club. She is also a Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist, named one of top 35 realtors in the Phoenix Business Journal in 2016, and named one of the top 16 women in Arizona for units sold in 2016 and 2017. Even with these honors, at the core of who she is, Roberts is humble and kind-hearted, believing there is more to life than prestige. The mom of two volunteers at Vista del Camino Food Bank;

serves as a Christmas Angel for children, families and seniors during the holidays; and gives to Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation. It’s this mindset that is integral to her work – and to her success. “If you work hard and follow the rules, and are honest and caring, your goals can be achieved no matter what your circumstances,” Roberts says. “I am involved in the integrity of the real estate business daily. I uphold my values and value my integrity during every transaction I enter into.” Seeing these attributes come to fruition with each sale or purchase brings Roberts a sense of joy and accomplishment, often in the simplest of ways. “I see my job as helping others with what may be the biggest investment of their life,” Roberts says. “To me, a big hug and a thank you is what makes my job rewarding.” Contact Lisa Roberts at 480.232.3291 or lisa@lisasellsaz.com.

Clients First

Mimi Sadeghi is in the business of people

T

hough she works in the realm of homes, Mimi Sadeghi operates from a people-centered place. Specializing in luxury residential real estate in Scottsdale with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty, Sadeghi is passionate, knowledgeable and dedicated to helping her clients’ dreams become a reality. “I put my full enthusiasm, energy and passion into every transaction,” says Sadeghi, who has lived in North Scottsdale for 16 years. “I understand the market, the economics of buying and selling, and how to leverage all the tools available to get the best results for my clients. My commitment to success and willingness to help others have helped propel my real estate career in a short period of time.” And it’s true – with just two years under her real estate belt, Sadeghi is already ahead of the game, having been named in the top 5 percent of Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty’s President’s Club and as one of the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors’ 40 Under 40, both for 2018.

Prior to real estate, Sadeghi spent a number of years in mortgage banking and worked as an executive at various corporations. She received a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in built environment from Arizona State University. In fact, Sadeghi says she thrives on education and continually invests in learning and growing, helping others also do the same as a board member of Women for ATSU, which has a mission of investing in women’s education at A.T. Still University. “I also support local schools and help with fundraising events for children,” she says. “Kids are the future of our country, after all.” With an educational background in architecture and design, Sadeghi has always been passionate about our built environment as well as experiencing different spaces. A self-described entrepreneur at heart, Sadeghi prides herself on honesty and integrity in every transaction. Her philosophy is simple: Clients come first. “I love interacting with people and helping them achieve their dreams,”

Sadeghi says. “Although by definition I am in ‘sales’, my main objective is not to be a ‘salesperson’ and achieve my sales goals, but, rather, genuinely help others with buying or selling real estate. I want to elevate the consumer experience in this industry by being [my clients’] true advocate.” She does so by looking out for her clients’ best interest and paving the way for a smooth, easy experience in addition to unparalleled client communication to keep them informed throughout the entire buying or selling process. In particular, sellers love Sadeghi’s innovative marketing methods for getting the maximum exposure on their listings. “I don’t measure success through achievements or awards, but, instead, through the satisfaction of my clients,” Sadeghi says. “I am extremely resultsoriented and won’t settle for anything less than the best outcome for my clients.” Contact Mimi Sadeghi at 480.217.3305, mimi.sadeghi@russlyon.com or www.mimisadeghi.com.

In the Family

Michael Banovac carries on a legacy while paying it forward

M

ichael Banovac, the managing partner of RMB Luxury Real Estate, wasted no time getting into the real estate industry. “The day I turned 18, I got my real estate license. My parents always stressed the importance of land ownership, and they encouraged me to have my license as soon as I could,” says Banovac, who was born and raised in the Biltmore and Paradise Valley areas and graduated from Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing. For Banovac, real estate was nothing new. “I’m truly blessed because real estate has been in my blood since day one. For as long as I can remember, my parents were building, remodeling, designing, buying and selling homes in Arizona and California.” Today, RMB Luxury Real Estate, which Banovac founded alongside his father and brother, does just that. The team holds both commercial and residential

contractor licenses and is proficient in homebuilding, remodeling and design as well as the buying/selling of homes. “It’s very rare to have all of that under one roof,” Banovac says. “Adding our interior designer Debra Richardson into the fold, very few companies can provide such a high level of expertise and knowledge in all aspects of residential real estate that my team and I can.” In 2015, Banovac was Arizona’s youngest primary listing agent to sell a home for just under $3 million, and from 2012 to 2018, Banovac – along with his partners – acquired, built, remodeled and/ or sold more than 100 homes with a value in excess of $75 million. Banovac is a 2018 honoree for the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors’ 40 Under 40 and was a 2017 tour director for the Paradise Valley Luxury Home Tour. Beyond his real estate recognition, Banovac published his first book in November 2017. With all of his success, Banovac pays it forward by helping other budding industry

professionals kickstart their careers. “A lot of younger agents and/or affiliates in the industry come to me for advice because of my success at a young age,” Banovac says. “I was very fortunate having a mentor (my father), and I stress to them that it takes an army to be successful. You’re only as good as the company you keep and the good deeds you do helping others become the best versions of themselves.” Banovac makes sure to carve out time monthly for these meetings, in which he shares his industry wisdom – and why he does what he does for a living. “I truly love all aspects of real estate. Helping people build, buy, sell, and/ or remodel their dream home is hugely rewarding,” Banovac says. “Being able to help others achieve their goals and bring their dreams to life, I couldn’t think of anything better.” Contact Michael Banovac at 602.571.4888, mbanovac@hotmail.com or www.rmbluxury.com.

Heartfelt Help

Kristin Graziano prioritizes serving others

K

ristin Graziano, who has been in the real estate industry for 15 years, lives on the same Scottsdale street she grew up on and in the same neighborhood where her parents were raised. But the family ties run deeper. “My grandparents also sold real estate in my neighborhood,” says Graziano, who is a realtor and team lead with The Kristin Graziano Group at HomeSmart. “I recently sold a house that they were the last agents to sell 40 years ago!” With such local roots, it’s no wonder that Graziano is passionate about helping others buy and sell homes in Scottsdale and around the Valley. “Being a realtor is so much more than helping people buy and sell a home. It is a time of transition for people, and we wear so many hats when working with clients,” Graziano says. “I like being there for our clients and guiding them through the process with compassion for what they are going through. For some, it is a happy

time, and, for others, it is a transition that is not exciting.” Graziano recently completed her GREEN designation through the National Association of Realtors. Her other accomplishments include being in the top 1 percent of Arizona Regional Multiple Listing Service Agents and leading the No. 3 team at HomeSmart nationally for units and volume. She’s also the top selling agent in Scottsdale’s 85250 zip code and is one of the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors’ 40 Under 40 for 2018. But, even with so many honors, Graziano’s career is truly all about people. “Our team builds relationships with people, rather than treating them as transactions,” Graziano says. “We go above and beyond what is expected and strive to deliver the highest level of service.” And, it’s also about community and giving back. To that point, Graziano’s team adopted a street (McDonald Drive) in Scottsdale as part of the city’s

Adopt-A-Road program. On a personal note, Graziano – whose mom passed away from cancer at only 42 years old – hosts an annual movie fundraiser for women to benefit local charities or families in need. “Two years ago, we helped raise over $5,000 for two people in our community battling cancer, a mom of five and a 2-yearold boy,” says Graziano, a mom of three herself. “Last year, we raised money for two charities: Michelle’s Love, which helps single parents with cancer, and The Jack Lloyd Foundation, which helps families battling childhood cancer.” It’s this sense of community and service to others that’s at the heart of Graziano’s work as a realtor. “Building a community of clients and agents that enjoy working with us, and trust working with us, helps our future clients have confidence that they are in the best hands possible.” Contact Kristin Graziano at 480.229.6569, kristin@kggsellsaz.com or www.kggsellsaz.com.

A Lucky Calling

Laura Lucky continues her family’s esteemed business

G

etting into the Lucky family business was a no-brainer for Laura Lucky. She earned her real estate license at just 18 years old, knowing at a young age that joining her parents, Matt and Lisa Lucky, in their real estate business was not simply her path of choice, but also a calling. “I’m privileged to work with my parents who have exceptional experience, knowledge and success in the North Scottsdale community,” says Lucky, who is an associate broker with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty. “I like to think I’ve been trained by the best!” Shortly after obtaining her real estate license, the North Scottsdale resident graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and international business, which has been an effective tool in driving the family business’ growth. The latest brainchild of Lucky’s marketing acumen is a glossy lifestyle and real estate magazine, The Lucky Collection. Lucky has been a four-time award

winner of Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors’ (SAAR) 40 Under 40, named the Emerging Realtor of the Year by SAAR, is part of the Class XIX Leadership Academy at SAAR, and is e-PRO certified. But it’s more than her honors that set Lucky apart. In fact, as the No. 1 agent from among nearly 1,000 Russ Lyon agents and the No. 2 agent among every agent in the Valley, the family partially attributes their success to a self-imposed “15-minute rule.” “We acknowledged early on that the best way to serve our clients is to only take on business that’s within a 15-minute drive from our office,” Lucky says. “That way, we’re essentially always ‘on call’ and at the ready for any buyer or seller that we’re working with.” When she’s not working with her clients, Lucky lends her time to several Valley organizations. She volunteers with V-Corps, sponsored by the Russ Lyon Charitable Foundation, which includes projects such as preparing meals for the underprivileged,

cleaning up public Arizona lands, and supplying water to the city’s homeless population. Passionate about animals, Lucky is on the board for Foothills Animal Shelter, organizing fundraising events and even opening her home to foster homeless animals. She also serves on the committee for the Starry Starry Night Gala to raise awareness and funds for the STAR Institute, which helps children and families living with Sensory Processing Disorder and other sensory issues associated with conditions such as ADHD and autism. It’s this passion for helping the people and greater community around her that truly drives Lucky’s success. “Every day is different, and I love being helpful through a meaningful and sometimes stressful time in our clients’ lives,” Lucky says. “I’m grateful for the ability to blend real estate, family and fun all into a day’s work!” Contact Laura Lucky at 480.390.5044, laura.lucky@russlyon.com or www.lisalucky.com.

take your SEX LIFE to the NEXT LEVEL! PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE • REJUVENATION • TUNE-UP • TURBO CHARGE

THE NEWEST, MOST INNOVATIVE TREATMENT FOR MEN.

THE OLD ADAGE IS TRUE: IF YOU DON’T USE IT, YOU LOSE IT.

The power of your erection is based entirely on blood volume. The better the blood flow, the stronger the erection. As men age, harmless activities like sex and sports cause scar-tissue build up along the length of the penis. What does this mean? Less blood flow, possible curvatures due to scar tissue build-up, and…yes. Shrinkage. GainsWave Technology utilizes high-frequency, low-intensity sound waves to increase local circulation, repair aged blood vessels, and stimulate growth of new blood vessels and nerve cells. This removes years of micro-plaque and tissue build up. The result? Harder, stronger erections, increased sensitivity, and even greater girth and length. Yes, that’s what we said… you will get bigger. We guarantee it. Don’t lose it. Use it, and enjoy it. Call today to schedule your consultation.

Colorful solar-powered lanterns light up Scottsdale Civic Center Mall

BY OFELIA MONTELONGO / PHOTOS COURTESY OF BRIAN PASSEY/SCOTTSDALE PUBLIC ART

Art can be found even in unexpected places. In Scottsdale, this includes the non-functioning fountains in front of Robert Indiana’s popular LOVE sculpture, where multicolored solar lanterns have found a temporary home. Last year, the fountains located in Scottsdale Civic Center Mall were shut off to be renovated and to prevent water from damaging the bridge to Drinkwater Boulevard. After releasing an open call for project proposals to find a creative solution, Scottsdale Public Art selected Eli Richard’s Sun Lanterns, an art installation featuring 23 solar-powered plexiglass and steel lanterns that cast colorful shadows during the day while absorbing sunlight to illuminate the public space at night. Jennifer Gill, the public art manager of Scottsdale Public Art, explains that Richard’s proposal stood out due to its clear vision of how the lanterns could inhabit the entire fountain area in a way that would visually discourage the public from entering the space. “[Richard’s art] successfully activated the site by having a vibrant, multifaceted daytime and nighttime presence,” Gill says. “The sustainability of the materials and solar lights were also an important factor due to the 18- to 24-month outdoor installation period.” Tempe-based artist Eli Richard, whose background is in printmaking and screen printing, explains the idea originated from a previous project done for the City of Chandler through another Scottsdale Public Art program called IN FLUX, where he created a sculpture with wood and plexiglass to replicate the look of stained glass. “I was inspired to create something more abstract with similar materials,” he says. “I was also interested in how the plexiglass created shadows during the day and how I could work with light to have a similar effect at night.” Richard was also inspired by the colors of the desert landscape. “The color palette here is unlike anywhere else I have been,” he says. “The colors [of the installation] are also meant to bring a lot of energy to the space.” It took six weeks to build the artwork. After Richard found the best construction for the lanterns, he cut and welded the frames, followed by cutting the plexiglass pieces. “Each lantern has a unique arrangement of colors that do not really repeat in a specific pattern but, rather, replicate local landscapes in an abstract way,” he says. The lanterns vary in size and were installed throughout the fountains at multiple elevations. After 18 to 24 months, the installation will be donated to the City of Scottsdale for future display. For more information about the artist and the installation, visit www.elirichard.com and www.scottsdalepublicart.org.

SCOTTSDALE’S VISIONARY John Corritore shapes Scottsdale’s Iconic Destinations

S

ince 1988, Corritore has been shaping the retail landscape of the greater Scottsdale area, launching his specialty real estate firm, The Corritore Company. “I feel fortunate to have had an effect in shaping Scottsdale and the retail environment that it is today with the work that The Corritore Company has done,” says visionary John Corritore, president. The Corritore Company’s first project was leasing Tempe’s Mill Avenue (Centerpointe), creating a thriving, vibrant destination. He soon moved to Scottsdale, having been brought in as a third-party leasing consultant to work with Westcor, which then owned Scottsdale Fashion Square, The Borgata and The Shops at Hilton Village. Corritore not only began leasing those three retail centers, but moved his office to The Borgata, where he remained for the next eight years. In addition to leasing projects, Corritore had another niche—helping build brands nationally by expanding them into locations across the country. His first client, which he would eventually expand to 92 locations coast-to-coast, was Z Gallerie. “In traveling to work on these expansion locations, I learned about the streetscape shopping center format,” Corritore explains. “And so I was brought in to do a feasibility study to determine if there was a market for that type of project in Kierland Commons.” After the project was deemed feasible, The Corritore Company was then hired to handle the leasing of Kierland Commons. Corritore was so confident in the streetscape concept that he even brought in two of his expansion clients—Z Gallerie and Lucky Brand. “Kierland Commons went on to become one of the most successful

projects of its type in the United States,” Corritore shares. “We created an outdoor streetscape with all the cutting-edge retailers of that time, and we brought a majority of first-to-market tenants such as Anthropologie, Sur la Table, Tommy Bahama and Brighton Collectibles to the location.” Scottsdale Quarter quickly came next, with The Corritore Company becoming instrumental in both selling the land and leasing the project. “In all, I spent 15 years leasing both projects, creating an urban style shopping hub in Scottsdale,” says Corritore. Once the company achieved those successes, it was hired to do most of the other specialty retail projects in the Scottsdale/North Phoenix area, including Scottsdale Waterfront, Market Street at DC Ranch, Chauncey Ranch, The Summit, The Seville, La Mirada, The District at Desert Ridge, Marketplace at Lincoln, and most recently, The Shops Gainey Village. Most projects were

leased from the ground-up. In addition to helping shape Scottsdale, The Corritore Company has impacted the Valley as a whole, leasing Tempe Marketplace, Westgate Entertainment District (Glendale), Dana Park (Mesa), Casa Paloma (Chandler), Village at Arrowhead (Glendale) and Parkwest (Peoria), as well as consulting on SanTan Village (Gilbert). The Corritore Company continues to operate from Scottsdale, having moved to The Shops at Gainey Village after 14 years at Kierland Commons. “As a local, I love that I can go to these locations and experience them with my family,” Corritore says. “You put your heart and soul into these projects and you always care about them, even after you’re done leasing them.” Corritore Company 8777 N Scottsdale Rd Suite 306 Scottdale, AZ 85253 480.947.7200 https://corritore.com

2018 FORD MUSTANG GT The American classic debuts a refresh with updated styling and more power BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $35,190

It’s 1964 and Ford Motor Company’s thenVice President Lee Iacocca introduces the new Ford Mustang at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York. That same year, Dick Dale and His Del-Tones release the single Wild, Wild Mustang. An icon was born. More than 50 years later, the first muscle car is not only still here, it’s actually gotten stronger and faster, and it’s still a car people vie to own. The current generation that debuted for 2015 has received a refresh for 2018, with improvements including revised exterior styling for a more aggressive appearance, extra power, better handling, and additional technology. My test car – the Mustang GT Premium powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 engine – has also been revised, delivering more horsepower and torque than previous models. My GT came equipped with the new, optional 10-speed automatic transmission. An upgraded six-speed manual transmission is standard. The Mustang goes from zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds. It also came with the optional Performance Package, adding a firmer suspension with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S performance tires on

19-inch ebony black multi-spoke alloy wheels, additional engine cooling, and a Torsen limited-slip differential. An $895 optional feature called Active Valve Performance Exhaust lets you select between varying levels of exhaust volume, including normal, sport, track and quiet modes. Inside, changes are minimal. The new 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster offers various screen layouts, 26 color options, and displays for up to eight gauges. Putting the GT through its paces on twisty canyon roads, the car was more than impressive with sharp precision handling on tight hairpin corners with the massive tires firmly gripping the asphalt. Straightaways arouse a magnificent, intoxicating noise while power dilates in range through the hefty quad exhausts with blazing power pushing you firmly back in the heavily bolstered bucket seats. Large Brembo brakes are simply stupendous. Today, the Mustang is a horse of a different color than Ford originally imagined. But it’s still alive and kickin’ and the kind of car people still dream about.

MORE THAN MOONSHINE Find your next spirited adventure at five must-try distilleries

BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

Back in the day, there was a certain dangerous allure to moonshine. Besides Kentucky Bourbon, nothing else distilled in the U.S. was known for quality. Today, however, U.S. distilleries finesse fine flavors to create an artful assortment of craft spirits, from award-winning whiskeys to gins and vodkas. Here are some of the best places – both close to home and a bit further – to please the spirit-loving person in your life and discover more than your grandpa’s moonshine.

Hamilton Distillery: Tucson, Arizona Stephen Paul and his daughter, Amanda Paul, love the Sonoran Desert they call home. Back in 2006, they were sitting around drinking Scotch and having a barbecue with mesquite scraps, pondering what it would be like to make malt barley over mesquite instead of traditional peat. The Pauls taught themselves whiskey-making techniques over the next few years and eventually incorporated Hamilton Distillers in 2011. Today, Hamilton makes its distinctive whiskey, called Whiskey Del Bac, in Tucson using mesquite. They have three flagship whiskeys – Dorado, a single malt mesquite-smoke aged; Clear, a single malt unaged; and Classic, a single malt unsmoked aged. An annual favorite is the 100-proof Winter Release, available just once a year. Hamilton offers tours on Saturdays, taking you through the whiskey-making process and ending with a tasting of the distillery’s three core whiskies. The tours are $20 per person, and reservations are required. The retail shop is only open on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. www.hamiltondistillers.com.

Elgin Distillery: Sonoita, Arizona Just an hour south of Tucson in the Sonoita/Elgin area you’ll find Elgin Distillery, which is owned by Gary Reeves, who also owns The Village of Elgin Winery. The two facilities share a common courtyard, ideal for combining a distillery visit with a wine tasting. Elgin Distillery makes small-batch, premium spirits ranging from whiskey to vodka. Its Arizona Straight Bourbon Whiskey has won gold medals at competitions across the country; in fact, it was the 2018 San Francisco World Spirits Competition Gold Medal winner. There is also a single pot malt whiskey, Arizona bourbon, Arizona rye, four rums, three brandies, and Blue Peacock gin and vodka. For something uniquely Arizona, try the Soñac, a 100 percent Sonoita AVA cabernet sauvignon and syrah brandy. The tasting room is open Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (5 p.m. on Saturdays). www.elgindistillery.com.

Marble Distilling Company: Carbondale, Colorado Marble Distilling Company, about 90 minutes east of Grand Junction (and 31 miles from Aspen) on Colorado’s Western slope, opened its doors in summer 2015. It offers handcrafted, artisan vodka, gin and liqueurs and is barreling whiskeys for future release. Marble Distilling uses a 250-gallon copper pot still they’ve nicknamed Hazel and specializes in Colorado-grown grains. Plus, the distillery is serious about its “drink sustainably” motto: They recapture 100 percent of the water they use in the distillation process. Marble Distilling Company likes to say they’re “saving the planet one bottle of vodka at a time.” When you visit the Carbondale bar, you’ll have a chance to belly up to a nine-ton slab of marble from the Yule Quarry just down the road – the same marble used to create the Lincoln Memorial. And don’t worry if you sample all those craft sips. The Distillery Inn, a five-room luxury hotel, is the world’s only inn housed within a working distillery, letting you sleep with the stills in the heart of the Colorado Rockies. Even better, there are Tesla charging stations outside, high-tech touches in the rooms, and the inn is dog-friendly. www.marbledistilling.com. Bonus: This is the perfect start to the all-new Colorado Spirits Trail, which is launching this summer. There are now more than 50 participating distilleries across Colorado. Discover more at www.coloradospiritstrail.com.

Buffalo Trace Distillery: Frankfort, Kentucky Just 30 miles from the birthplace of bourbon (Lexington, Kentucky), Buffalo Trace, located on the spot where buffalo crossed the Kentucky River, stayed open during Prohibition to make whiskey for “medicinal purposes.” There are a number of unique (and complimentary) tours available, including the Trace Tour where you can learn about the bourbon-making process, a hard hat tour which goes behind the scenes to showcase everything from grain delivery to fermentation, and even a ghost tour (the distillery has been rumored to have visits from the supernatural and has been featured on Ghost Hunters). And yes, there are tastings available at Buffalo Trace Distillery. www.buffalotracedistillery.com.

Woodford Reserve Distillery: Versailles, Kentucky A 20-minute drive from Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve sits on Kentucky’s oldest distilling site where Elijah Pepper began making whiskey in 1812. Today, the distillery is home to a pretty impressive 500-foot-long, gravity-fed barrel run, copper pot stills, and 100-year-old cypress wood fermenters. It also boasts one of the only heat-cycled barrelhouses in the world, imparting distinct color and flavor. You can take a tour that explains the history of bourbon, check out the bottling process, and sample Woodford Reserve’s bourbon. Tours are available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Online reservations are recommended. www.woodfordreserve.com.

HERE FOR THE BEER Big boy brews bursting with flavor

Today there are more than 100 breweries statewide, up from 30 just a few years ago. The movement is so popular, in fact, that nearly every grocery store, liquor store, bar and restaurant in the Valley carries a selection of local brands. Among the many Arizona-made brews, we found eight “big boy beers” – those with high alcohol by volume (ABV) and/or outrageous flavor – to try this summer.

NAUGHTY NARANJA 1912 Brewing Co. This Born & Brewed People’s Choice Award winner is an imperial gose (a top-fermented beer) with a punch of citrus so strong you may think you’re drinking a screwdriver or a mimosa. Every sip begins with coriander on the nose and finishes with a heavy helping of tart blood orange flavor. ABV: 8.5%. www.1912brewing.com. WHITE RUSSIAN IMPERIAL STOUT SunUp Brewing Co. A must-try dark beer, this stout has plenty of body and a full mouthfeel that embodies huge notes of coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and caramel combined with rich fruit undertones of plum and raisin, which are highlighted by the use of dark and roasted malts. ABV: 9.4%. www.sunup.beer. RUM BARREL-AGED BIÈRE DEL BAC Dragoon Brewing Co. This Belgian-style quad is made with piloncillo sugar and dark Belgian Candi Syrup, but don’t let the sweet-sounding ingredients fool you. They lend complexity to the flavor profile, but, above all, the beer boasts out-of-this-world peppery spice and spirit notes as it’s aged in rum barrels. ABV: 10.1%. www.dragoonbrewing.com. F.Y.I.T.M. (FIGHT-EM) DOUBLE IPA The Shop Beer Co. Though it has an extra hoppy nature, The Shop Beer Co.’s double IPA manages to remain drinkable and balanced. Grapefruit and citrus undertones burst on the tongue, and the higher-than-average ABV will certainly sneak up on an unsuspecting imbiber. ABV: 10%. www.theshop.beer.

106

So Scottsdale! June ‘18

SHOT IN THE ARM IMPERIAL STOUT McFate Brewing Company Aged for one year in Old Forester whiskey barrels, this heavy, double-mashed imperial stout is not for the faint of heart. The warm, rich flavors – amped up by the whiskey – work even in the summer months, but it’s ideally best at dinner versus by the pool given its high alcohol content. ABV: 14%. www.mcfatebrewing.com. COFFEE CHOCOLATE MEAD Arizona Mead Company Made from fermented yeast, honey and water – and often also fermented with fruits, spices, grains and hops like beer – meads are a trendy cousin to traditional brews. This stunner is flavored with notes of bitter dark chocolate and coffee and balanced with smooth vanilla. ABV: 14%. www.azmeadco.com. TAILDRAGGER HOP SNOB Saddle Mountain Brewing Company “Hop heads” from across the country come to Saddle Mountain for this showstopper. A West Coast IPA, it is brewed with five varieties of hops and presents with fantastic character throughout. It is both crisp and bold with a bit of grapefruit and is dry on the finish. Its ultimate goal – to make its drinkers “hoppy.” ABV: 6.5%. www.saddlemountainbrewing.com. LOST HIGHWAY DOUBLE BLACK IPA Mother Road Brewing Company Expect an espresso-colored head, followed by an enticing aroma of orange zest and roasted malt. Bitter notes of orange and chocolate balance hints of sweeter dark caramel in every sip. ABV: 8%. www.motherroadbeer.com.

Chef-owner Brett Vibber of Cartwright’s Modern Cuisine aims to honor the legacy of the American West by weaving its authentic flavors into every element of his menu. Vibber’s Tenderloin Trio ($46) illustrates this concept to a T, offering a trio of three-ounce venison, bison and prime beef, each native to the region and cooked over a wood-fired grill to the guest’s specifications, simply seasoned with salt and pepper. The proteins are paired with a foraged wild mushroom and herb risotto, which provides an earthy complement, as well as charred asparagus, locally grown cherry tomatoes, and pine nuts for added texture. The dish is finished with a hearty, rustic peppercorn demi-glace to elevate this contemporary take on “cowboy” cuisine. Cartwright’s Modern Cuisine, 6710 E. GREEN GIANT Toro’s spicy, verdant bloody mary

Late last year, Toro Latin Restaurant & Rum Bar at TPC Scottsdale announced plans for a brunch program. As such, the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess’ beverage department was challenged with developing cocktails to complement the Latininfused menu. Among the most spirited creations is Toro’s twist on a traditional bloody mary, often a combination of vodka, tomato juice and spices, which they re-imagined into a cocktail that surely makes all the others green with envy. “We’ve played around with tomatillos before, especially around St. Patrick’s Day,” says Matthew Doerr, the resort’s beverage director. “Native to Latin America with both tart and herbal notes, they quickly became the muse for our take on the brunch classic.” For Toro’s bloody mary – called the Salty Iguana ($14) – Doerr makes a salsa from tomatillos, onions and spices, blending them together and then straining the contents into a shaker. Rather than vodka, he then adds pisco, a Peruvian brandy, which he infuses with jalapenos. “The floral notes in the pisco amp up the herbaceous tomatillos,” Doerr says. “And by infusing the pisco with jalapenos, their kick doesn’t hit you straight away, so they’re more of a subtle surprise.” He then adds a spicy green chile liqueur, which is just as vividly green as the tomatillos, followed by lemon juice to give the mixture a splash of citrus. He then shakes it gently before pouring it into a Collins glass rimmed with tajin salt, which imparts a hint of lime as you sip. It’s garnished with celery, cherry tomatoes, lemon and crispy bacon. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Jeffrey Schoening of Brat Haus

Jeffrey Schoening is the executive chef at Brat Haus, infusing both sophistication and local love into the beer garden’s contemporary American and European-influenced fare.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Chefs notoriously dislike doing desserts, but not you? Most chefs learn how to make standard desserts like bread pudding and creme brulee under protest, but I got really into the science behind making them in culinary school. At one point, I even competed in American Culinary Federation competitions doing desserts. Did desserts get you to Arizona? Not a dessert – a desert! This desert! I grew up in rainy Washington and got my first major cooking gig in snowy Idaho. I roomed with several guys in Idaho who worked part of the year in the Arizona golf industry. On a whim, I moved to Arizona without ever having been here. Luckily, I got the break of a lifetime within a month. What was the big break? I earned a position at Tarbell’s, where I stayed more than a year before moving onto a smaller concept and then onto St. Francis. While there, I was referred to a fellow named Justin Beckett, who was looking to start his first restaurant. I would help Justin open Beckett’s Table, eventually serving as chef de cuisine. At Beckett’s Table, I met my now-wife Angelina who also worked there at the time. But you left the desert? We moved back to Washington to be closer to family a few years back. But, it turns out we are full-on, sun-worshipping desert dwellers. We moved back this past summer, just three weeks after our son Baker was born, in fact. I joined Brat Haus not long after. How have you put your signature on the menu? I am a huge localvore, so we now use Noble Bread, Arizona Cheese Company, McClendon Farms and Hayden Mills in the kitchen. I’ve also added some beefed-up brats featuring everything from snake to goat and warm-weather favorites like superfood-infused salads and bright beet dishes. Brat Haus, 3622 N. Get your sweet fix at eight local doughnut destinations

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

The Local Donut

While also a bakery and pastry shop, doughnuts are the clear star here. According to Buzzfeed, The Local Donut is the top spot for doughnuts in Arizona, featuring both traditional options as well as what they call “fancy doughnuts” on the menu. These dazzlers run the gamut from creme brulee to salted caramel to peanut butter and jelly varieties. They also have croissant doughnuts, more commonly known as cronuts, available each weekend, with both Nutella and vanilla bean options. 3213 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; 480.500.5236; www.thelocaldonutshop.com.

Masterpiece Donuts & Coffee

To say owners Tom and Sheri Schrader are doughnut-obsessed is an understatement. In fact, Tom claims he developed a daily doughnut habit that lasted three decades before he and Sheri made the jump into opening Masterpiece last year. Their concept allows guests to “customize the canvas” that is a basic doughnut, giving patrons 90 seconds while their vanilla-based doughnuts are made fresh to choose glazes, icings and other yummy treats as toppings. Taking this concept even further, there's also a semi-private “Artists Corner” inside where children are able to work on arts and crafts projects. 3950 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; 602.633.1550; www.masterpiecedonutsandcoffeeplus.com.

BoSa Donuts

BoSa Donuts

They’re doughy and delicious. They’re sweet and scrumptious. They’re glazed and gooey. They’re doughnuts! With more than 10 billion of these treats enjoyed each year in the U.S. alone, olykoeks – as they were first called when Dutch settlers brought them stateside in the early 1800s – are not just tasty, but big business. So, which local businesses should be on your go-to list when you need your sugary-sweet fix? Here are some of our favorite makers of doughnuts whether they are iced, powdered, chocolate, jellied, baked or fried.

110

So Scottsdale! June ‘18

While the theme at these shops – which are now 12 strong in the Valley and counting – is no frills, the doughnuts will make you rave nonetheless. BoSa doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel but, instead, focuses on the dough, and it shows; they have the airiest, fluffiest dough around. Don’t expect seasonal flavors or out-ofthe-box toppings. Instead, just order tried-andtrue glazed or sprinkle doughnuts and let them rock your world in the simplest-yet-most-satisfying way ever. They are also open late, most until 10 p.m. or even open 24 hours a day, so you can stop in (or use the drive-thru) whenever you have a craving. Multiple locations; www.bosadonutsaz.com.

Crave Grounds

Remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books from your youth? This hot spot features this same concept, except with doughnuts. They offer guests the chance to customize their own made-to-order mini doughnuts, allowing you to mix and match frostings and toppings at will. Of course, they also have a long list

Nami tSoft tServe and Coffee

This concept was inspired by “tSoynami,” which is the owners’ own homemade, vegan “tsoft tserve” (the actual proprietary name and made with soy) ice cream brimming with all sorts of goodies like cake, cookies, chocolate or peanut butter stirred in. For their doughnuts, Nami expands this concept into baked treats, crafting 100 percent vegan doughnuts with similar vegan ingredients mixed into the dough, squeezed inside or added on top. Daily fried vegan options include blueberry, banana nut, and cookies and cream. There are also fritters, specialty maple doughnuts, and even gluten-free vegan options, which change daily. 2014 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 602.258.6264; www.tsoynami.com

This bakery was initially born out of necessity by one very determined mother. Owner Julie Moreno developed the concept when her daughter, Sophia, developed severe abdominal issues. When Sophia found relief by cutting all gluten from her diet, Julie sprang into action. After experimenting, she developed dozens of sweet and savory recipes for her daughter, each gluten-free. Word spread, and Julie eventually opened Jewel’s in Arcadia to help others like her daughter. BETTER BARBECUE Starlite BBQ ushers in an elevated twist on classic comfort foods

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS BY ELIZABETH MARIE

Starlite’s star is bright. Now open on the corner of Miller and Indian School roads, Starlite BBQ is the brainchild of the team that brought the lauded Ocotillo restaurant to the Valley in recent years. Its mission? Options. “To say barbecue is exploding in popularity in the Valley is an understatement,” says co-founder Walt Sterling. “But, here is the thing. Not everyone wants to eat barbecue, no matter how amazing it tastes, off of paper plates on a picnic table. And not everyone wants a standard soda or beer to wash it down with.” While Sterling and his team note that they have happily stood in their share of lines and eaten off of copious paper plates to get their barbecue fix many times, they were eager to deliver a barbecue concept for wine, craft beer and whiskey lovers as well as for those who have dietary restrictions and even those who want a more elevated dining experience vibe. As such, Starlite’s interior was designed with rich wood accents, many of them charred to look like the inside of a singed whiskey barrel, and it features a gorgeous marble bar top with black and smoky

122

So Scottsdale! June ‘18

accents throughout as well as flat-screen TVs, a chef’s table, and cozy seating (none of which are of the picnic-style variety). Plus, the patio is dog-friendly with misters and plush seating throughout. As for the food, Sterling is quick not to put their concept into any specific barbecue box. “In developing the menu, we were asked constantly if the plan was Nashvillestyle, Texas-style or Kansas City barbecue as far as flavor,” Sterling says. “We love them all, so didn’t want to choose just one, instead letting our talented chef Alex Levine, who I worked with at Ocotillo, smoke, grill and infuse all types of different flavors into our meats, sides and vegetable options.” On the menu, guests can expect several nods to the Southwest including green chile-infused items, locally sourced vegetables, and all meat derived from the nearby Creekstone Farms. They even use pecan and mesquite – two of Arizona’s most bountiful crops – to smoke the dishes. “We also wanted to give our vegetarian and vegan friends the chance to join in,” says Sterling, whose team took great care in developing options using cauliflower, smoked mushrooms and more. On the beverage side, the team boasts second-level sommelier (and fellow co-owner) Dave Johnson and award-winning mixologist Brad Twigg, who, together, dreamt up cocktails infusing whiskey, bourbon and scotch as well as cultivated 20 great wine options and 30-plus beers on tap and in bottles. Starlite BBQ is open Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 11 p.m. (bar open until midnight), Friday from 4 p.m. to midnight, Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight (bar open Friday and Saturday until 2 a.m.), and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (bar open until midnight). It is closed Monday and Tuesday. Starlite BBQ, 7620 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale; 480.553.9330; www.starlitebbq.com.
