MANY INVESTORS GET TALKED INTO BUYING COLLECTOR COINS WHEN IN REALITY THEY ARE ATTEMPTING TO SIMPLY BUY GOLD OR SILVER, SO WHICH IS THE BETTER WAY TO GO?

A: Select Rare coins are a good

investment for certain people. The catch is that many dealers are selling very common coins, which have lost value the past 20 years. Only a tiny part of the rare coin market has gone up in value since the 1990’s. The coins that have appreciated are not typically the coins being pushed by average salesman. Many dealers talk investors into common coins such as $20 Liberty and $20 St. Gaudens coins to name a couple. These coins have appreciated less than half as much as gold since 2000. Once you add the heavy mark ups of as much as 40%, the profits all but disappear.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO BUY PRECIOUS METALS SUCH AS GOLD, SILVER OR PLATINUM?

A: Gold and silver bullion coins such as U.S. Eagles have minimal markups and follow the price of the precious metal. They are much easier to buy and sell and are easy for the average investor to value from day to day. Bullion can be bars or a variety of different coins that sell for a small premium over the price of the underlying metal. The main rule in buying precious metals is “Keep it Simple”. You want to own something that is easy to sell and avoid the problem of having to determine a collector’s value of the coin.

A: First, find out exactly what

the coins are worth, how they have performed and how liquid they are in the market place. Others simply decided to cash out after they realized their investment really wasn’t doing what they expected. Every once in a while we find that someone actually has a super rare coin that has done well, but it’s usually the exception.

hen you’re hungry, health-minded or on the go, there’s almost nothing worse than opening an empty fridge and wondering what you’re going to make for dinner. In today’s busy society, healthy and quick options for meal time are at a premium. Families have less time to prepare home-cooked dinners and busy adults are looking for at-home alternatives to fast food. At minimum, Arizonans are seeking healthy meals that will help them maintain their waistlines – without sacrificing taste. John Stewart’s meal delivery company, Sunfare, believes they have the answer. continued…

up close In 1997, Stewart was living in Los Angeles, where he says he happened upon the food industry. “I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, and I ended up working in the fitness industry,” he says. “At the time, the Zone Diet had become all the rage but there was one problem. Nobody had the time to make the meals. That’s where we saw the opportunity to start Sunfare and to make healthy eating easy for people.” Along with business partner Carl Ferro, Sunfare moved to Scottsdale and began addressing a very different issue. Everyone wanted something different from a plan and each client had a very different palate. “The key was that if people didn’t like that day’s option, they wouldn’t eat it … and they wouldn’t get the results they wanted,” Stewart says. “So, we started giving people the ability to customize their own meals by removing ingredients they didn’t like and giving them different meal choices each day, so they could always find something appetizing. That kind of personalization made a huge difference and continues to set us apart today.” Now, Sunfare boasts a daily delivery service to more than 1,000 families per day across both Arizona and Los Angeles. Each personalized menu is cooked fresh

daily and delivered to front doors by 7 a.m. Sunfare offers six gourmet meal programs to fit the dietary needs of even the pickiest patron, including options for vegetarians, Paleo, gluten-free and family dining. It was back in 2001 that the Sunfare meal plans began getting national attention. During that particular summer, actor Charlie Sheen had lost weight and several media outlets wanted to know his secret. Sheen proudly championed the Sunfare service on nationally syndicated shows like The Rosie O’Donnell Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Entertainment Tonight, and On Air With Ryan Seacrest. “The next morning, phones across the Sunfare office were ringing and orders were pouring in. It was so exciting,” Stewart says. “We had no idea he was going to do that, and we’re still grateful for it.“ Now, A-list eaters like Jack Black, Kim Kardashian, Eva Longoria, Ashley Greene, Mark Wahlberg and Britney Spears swear by the Sunfare meal delivery service. Stewart also notes that actress Jennifer Aniston was their sixth client. “We’ve been in the industry for close to 20 years, and one of the most rewarding parts has been building a great team, a group that believes in the collective good of the business,” Stewart says. “I’m

Family and Community And speaking of family, Stewart calls his wife a “rock star,” and he is a proud dad to two little boys. “I love that each day I get to do both – be an entrepreneur and daddy,” he says. “It’s super satisfying and a lot of fun to hold [my kids’] hands and guide them through life. To make it all work is a bit of a juggling act, but at the end of the day, I’m extremely fortunate.” With the meal delivery business grossing more than $400 million annually, Stewart admits it’s a competitive industry. That’s why innovation and integrity are still the roots of the Sunfare brand — and why Stewart is always looking for the newest trends in food and convenience. “Something that’s really exciting is the whole local, farm-to-table approach to food preparation. Pomp Braswell takes on the PGA Tour Champions BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

omp Braswell’s golf story began with a high school dare – the professional golfer was dared by his friends to take a swing at the sport in 1986. Upon hitting 125 yards at Los Angeles’ Rancho Park driving range, Braswell became hooked. Braswell continued to play golf at San Jose State University in California. After graduating, he moved to Arizona in 1994, which is when his career as a professional golfer took flight. While playing the sport full time, Braswell was also an instructor at Golf Digest from 2004 to 2008, and he continued instructing at the Jim McLean Golf School and made Golf Tips magazine’s top 30 instructors list. Braswell is also a former Harlem Globetrotter. “Golf has opened up so many opportunities for me,” Braswell says. “All I can say is that I’m very fortunate.” His latest venture will be the PGA Tour Champions, a worldwide tour that brings together PGA Tour veterans who are 50-plus years old, where the players will compete for the Charles Schwab Cup. “I’m nervous and excited,” he says. “But those are good feelings to have.” With more than 30 years of golf experience, Braswell offers advice to all the newcomers out on the greens: “Too many youngsters get caught in the glamour of getting far without control,” he says. “The best players have strong shorter games. That’s where attention should be focused – on the mini games.”

What other things did you do in the Valley? When I lived in Arizona, I was on the golf board at UMOM. I also helped raise funds for Wounded Warrior Project since, as a veteran, the organization is close to my heart. What’s your favorite golf course in the Valley? It’s a tie between Mesa Country Club and Paradise Valley Country Club. Are your two children golf prodigies? Ironically, they hate golf. I always tell them, “Daddy can teach you,” but they could care less!

avid Cogan was born an entrepreneur. At just seven years old, he went door to door selling trinkets from his family junk drawer out of a little red wagon. Ironically, years later, he would interview the CEO of Radio Flyer on his locally broadcast radio show, Eliances Heroes (Money Radio 1510 AM and 105.3 FM), a facet of Eliances, a local entrepreneur’s organization started by Cogan. “The idea was to create a way to showcase a community of entrepreneurs who want to help one another build their businesses,” Cogan says. “It’s my belief that everyone has a unique skill they can provide to help one another. Our contributors consist of inventors, celebrities, mentors, startups and entrepreneurs – on both a local and national level.” After a successful career at IBM, Microsoft and eBay, Cogan was inspired to create a radio show where local leaders could tell their stories alongside industry titans like Tim Cook. “There are tremendous opportunities now for entrepreneurs,” he says. “It has never been easier to start a business, find resources, do research and make money. The president of the United Nations had a great answer to the meaning of life, and you have to catch the broadcast of John Edward, the psychic from Crossing Over. I also enjoyed Indra Nooyi (CEO of PepsiCo) and Curt Jones (founder of Dippin’ Dots). What is one piece of advice that has always resonated with you? ​Simply put, always be kind. hen he’s not captivating audiences for the digital agency PUBLICpr, Samuel Harwit can be found cultivating his own following through The Frenchy Toast, a blog he created after noticing a general lack of male fashion and lifestyle influencers. “It starts with thinking about who you’re targeting and determining what types of content will be most appealing,” Harwit says. This simple strategy, coupled with a background in marketing and public relations, has earned him nearly 150,000 style-hungry Instagram followers, all eager for a glimpse into his quirky world. “Fashion is at the center of every single day,” he says. “People look to me for guidance and to inspire them to look great and feel better about themselves.” Ironically, prior to founding The Frenchy Toast, Harwit admits to being a bit of a style copycat, rummaging through the virtual closets of his favorite influencers for personal inspiration. Since then, the blogger has come into his own, with his current look less about following trends and more about selecting designs that resonate with his simple aesthetic. Most days, this translates to monochromatic streetwear with a modern twist. If you feel good, you perform better.” When she’s at the office, turning noes into yeses and skeptics into believers, Howenstine unabashedly sticks to a casual dress code, living in dark jeans, wedges and edgy tops. “For a long time, I was a jeans and T-shirt kind of girl,” she confesses. “I still love that, but I appreciate dressing up way more now and enjoy doing so.” When the mood hits, she pulls inspiration from Jackie O and Twiggy, fusing the nuances of two classic icons to create a look that is entirely her own. I moisturize [my entire body] with coconut oil every night to keep my skin smooth and supple. Favorite way to break a sweat? Yoga is my preferred physical activity. It has been great physically in terms of building strength and flexibility, but has also taught me mindfulness, patience and just meditative ways to let go of the small stuff. I collect … SHOES. I have a whole closet in a spare bedroom dedicated to shoes. s Paul Goldschmidt approaches the plate, he can hear the swell of the crowd. His heart is beating fast and he welcomes it; the adrenaline always means a more powerful swing. He raises the bat, and, for just a moment, the cheers of the crowd fade. The faces of fans become a blur, and it is just him and the pitcher in the stadium. The ball comes fast, zooming toward the catcher’s glove. But with a crack, the ball soars high into the air. The roar of the onlookers catches back up to him, and Goldschmidt – fondly known as Goldy to millions – runs the bases. The man known as “America’s First Baseman” hasn’t had the typical rise to baseball greatness. Goldschmidt’s celebrity status was a methodical climb up until joining the Majors, and, in fact, baseball wasn’t immediately a passion of his as a child. Raised just outside of Houston in The Woodlands, Texas, Goldschmidt’s parents encouraged him to try T-ball. He had always been athletic and seemed to excel in an array of sports, including basketball, football and soccer. “One of my first memories as a child is that I didn’t want to go to T-ball practice,” Goldschmidt says. “My mom came to me and said, ‘We will not ask for anything again but please just go this one time.’ I remember climbing into the back of the minivan after practice and saying, ‘Mom, I love baseball!’” That love of the game followed Goldschmidt through successful seasons in high school and college (at Texas State University). Goldschmidt’s dream seemed to become reality when the Arizona Diamondbacks selected him in the eighth round of the 2008 Major League draft. Prior to making his debut with the D-backs, Goldschmidt excelled in the Minor Leagues, earning numerous awards and honors, including being named USA Today’s 2011 Minor League Player of the Year and being selected to play in the MLB All-Star Futures Game at Chase Field. In August 2011, Goldschmidt was called up to play in the Majors for the D-backs, and it was then that he became a household name by quickly garnering impressive stats and additional accolades. In his rookie season, he had eight home runs and 26 RBI in 48 games. He has since made four National League All-Star Teams, won two Gold Glove Awards, and also earned a Silver Slugger Award. Through his many successes and triumphs, Goldschmidt still remains humble and serious about continuously improving himself and his game.

“Every day is a learning process, and it helps me become a better player to look at it that way,” he says. “Every moment is about training and becoming faster, better and stronger. I take each practice seriously and despite having played for several years, I admit I still don’t have it all figured out. It’s constantly a learning process.” To that point, Goldschmidt’s humbleness is legendary. Players, coaches and colleagues alike say that, despite his extraordinary talent, he is just a regular Joe. And though the limelight does indeed follow him, the All-Star player is not one to seek it himself. It’s this unassuming demeanor that has made him a favorite among players and the public. He’s also very private about his personal life. Married to his college sweetheart, Amy Goldschmidt, they welcomed baby Jake in September 2015. “Jake is one now, and he is becoming so much fun,” Goldschmidt says. “Fatherhood is so much like baseball because it’s a lot of hard work but so rewarding in the end. Maybe more so for moms, because they often do so much more than dads. My wife is amazing that way.” When asked whether Goldschmidt would like to see his son follow in his footsteps, he says he’ll support any path little Jake wants to take. “It’s really about seeing a path and being passionate about it,” Goldschmidt says. “Ultimately, I want my family’s legacy to be one of giving back.”

PAYING IT FORWARD And the Goldschmidts are well on their way to creating that legacy – since Goldschmidt was called up in 2011, they have been a constant part of the Phoenix Children’s Hospital family. On any given day, you can see them in the halls of the hospital, with Paul talking baseball and signing autographs for his fans while Amy hosts self-esteem pink parties for girls, patient birthday party celebrations, or just has girly fun like painting nails. Goldschmidt jokes that even he has braided some hair and painted nails. “They do all of these things for one reason – it’s the right thing to do for these deserving children,” says Steve Schnall, the senior vice president and chief development officer for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation. “You’ll hear Paul say, ‘I’m just a baseball player. These kids are the true champions that inspire me to be and do my best.’ Phoenix Children’s Hospital is grateful to be on Team Goldschmidt.” Goldschmidt also is generous when it comes to giving back to the future of baseball. Earlier this year, Goldschmidt, together with APS and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, donated funds to renovate a baseball field in Glendale. Aptly named Paul Goldschmidt Field, it’s the 39th field in the “Diamonds Back” Youth Field Building Program. Updates included a new scoreboard, fencing, windscreen, sports lighting system and fixtures, irrigation system, sod, and stabilizer, with additional support provided by local contractors and businesses. “I played Little League growing up and you always had that home field that was yours, and to be able to give that to the kids in this neighborhood is amazing,” Goldschmidt says. “The fact that I can use my celebrity to give back is an awesome feeling. It’s just such an honor. It’s bigger than making it to the big leagues; it’s my everything.” Goldy’s Fund 4 Kids continues to raise money throughout the year for children’s charities and, more specifically, for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. In November 2016, Goldschmidt hosted an inaugural charity bowling event, Goldy’s Bowling Bash, which included appearances by Luis Gonzalez, Archie Bradley, Jim “Bones” Mackay, Drew Stanton, Brandon McCarthy, Justin Upton, Miguel Montero, and David Peralta. All proceeds went to the new Phoenix Children’s Hospital Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders. “I love golf tournaments as much as the next guy, but there are so many of them for charity. I wanted to do something a little different and bring in a pastime that my wife and I enjoy,” Goldschmidt says. “Who doesn’t love the feeling of a [bowling] strike, and to couple that with helping the kids, it was a winner in my book. I can’t wait for next year’s event.” It’s been a great year on and off the field for Goldschmidt, whose 2017 performance thus far has been at MVP-caliber levels, with an improved batting performance and some stunning outs at first base. His pride in his team and the place he calls home (Scottsdale) is clear. “I love everything about Phoenix and, more specifically, Scottsdale. In the off season, I take time to enjoy the outdoors, the weather, going to the park, swimming, golfing, everything,” Goldschmidt says. “The people here are just incredible and so supportive of me and of our little family. This is definitely home now; it’s the place where we are looking forward to raising our family.”

Head basketball coach at Ottawa University Putting together an outfit can be paralleled to a basketball game – all of the players (or shall we say pieces of clothing) need to work together as a team in order to score high in style. Just ask Arizona native Milee Karre, head coach for the men’s basketball team at Ottawa University, who lives out his passion courtside. While his casual wardrobe consists of Adidas and athletic wear, Karre takes influence from icon and fellow athlete David Beckham for his fancier ensembles. The coach’s motto, “look good, play good” is best illustrated when he dresses up for game day (with favorite pieces from Suitsupply and J.Crew) to feel both comfortable and powerful. While his slam dunk style has to include the perfect tie and shoes, the most important aspects of his look are clean lines and a tailored suit. “Fit is everything. You can have the nicest suit on the market, and if it doesn’t fit correctly, it’s a waste.” The finishing touch? An accessory Karre holds near and dear to his heart: His grandfather’s Presidential Rolex for an added touch of class and ’50s swag. His love of fitness continues after the buzzer with just about anything involving athletics, including working out and watching sports.

Nick Ciletti

Anchor and reporter at ABC15 Like anyone in the public eye, it’s important for Nick Ciletti to look the part – at least when he’s on air with ABC15 as an anchor and reporter. As a TV personality, Ciletti always has a freshly pressed (and well-tailored) suit on hand, as the news world is full of surprises like anchoring at the last minute or doing a major interview. Other times, he opts for Banana Republic slacks and a button-down, or if a story takes him somewhere like Camelback Mountain, his go-to is jeans and a black V-neck a la Anderson Cooper. Not only is Ciletti living out his childhood dream on air, he’s also a pediatric cancer survivor and now gives back to kids by volunteering at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. During his free time, Ciletti usually sports laidback, unique bargain finds from the clearance racks at Zara, Macy’s, J.Crew and even Marshall’s, giving him wardrobe variety while staying within budget. “Those stores have some really unique things and pieces you won’t find elsewhere. You may have to hunt a little bit, but that’s all part of the fun, right?” His most prized possession, though, can’t be found in his closet (but sometimes probably sneaks in there!) – his adopted French bulldog, Larry.

Michael Albee

Attorney at Albee Law Firm Born and raised in Scottsdale, Michael Albee describes his style as nerdy with a dash of charm – or, he says, maybe more than a dash. The business owner, attorney and self-proclaimed superhero by night (he has a 10-year-old daughter), loves to experiment with color and often takes influence from NBA players, noting they usually have the ability to afford the nicest clothes and they are tall, like Albee. During the week, you’ll find him in colored fitted suits at work and creative, vibrant tank tops or gym clothes by night. For a night out, he relies on solid colors, the occasional blazer and dark jeans from the likes of Banana Republic, Nordstrom and Burberry. Albee swears there’s nothing he wouldn’t wear, and that he’s influenced by nothing and everything all at the same time, with a personal mantra to have fun with his clothes. While a favorite accessory for this budding author is his MacBook Pro, other must-haves include his bow tie, comb and gold obsidian beaded bracelet (meant to eliminate ego and conflict), which he doesn’t leave home without. His fashion tip? Correctly fitted clothing (i.e. clothing that looks good). “When you look good, you feel good, and that message pours into your world a positive vibe that keeps you lucky.”

Shimeon Jedidiah Mattox

Fashion entrepreneur, model and fashion stylist From one look at Shimeon Mattox, it’s clear that the fashion fanatic marches to the beat of his own drum. With his sunglasses on and Starbucks in hand (his two favorite accessories), Mattox is on a mission to let others know it’s OK to be different, hoping to change the world with his life story and ostentatious fashion brand (Royal Black Sheep). While he takes influence from classic black-and-white movies, music videos and fashion blogs, along with stars who were ahead of their time (such as Prince), Mattox’s style is 100 percent his own, citing attitude and confidence as his muses. “I play with gender bending as I feel this is the future, as fashion is a recycle and things from different eras come back in style.” For his day-to-day look, the creative visionary often selects outfits that are shiny, silky and metallic. For a night out, Mattox follows his motto, “Why be the same every day?” He lets his soul do the selecting, often channeling one of his favorite characters like 007. Whether he’s answering emails, out with friends or reading his most prized possession – the Bible his late grandmother gave him – Mattox can be spotted in a mix of Tom Ford and Celine with pieces from Goodwill and Buffalo Exchange.

Mario Aniles

Entrepreneur and CPA As an entrepreneur, Mario Aniles is used to making his own rules in business, and that ideal transfers to his wardrobe. As a natural-born leader (Aniles started his first business while attending Arizona State University), the native Phoenician has a self-proclaimed “classic man” style. Aniles often finds himself rushing around from the office to board meetings, admitting his mind goes on autopilot when getting dressed, often selecting navy suits for the workday and a black blazer with a pocket square for a little flair when the sun goes down. Color is definitely key – Aniles takes inspiration from the bright suits wore by Robert DeNiro in Casino and counts on Salvatore Ferragamo for his favorite pieces. “I love contemporary art and sometimes try to incorporate colors that pop, accessories that stand out, and combinations that may not always seem to go together but that hopefully look OK in the spirit of challenging traditional norms.” One traditional norm you won’t see him breaking is the sandals with socks rule, a combination he says he will never sport. When he’s not dreaming up his next big idea, you can find Aniles hiking, enjoying a meal with friends, or relaxing at a local lounge with an OldFashioned in hand.

Timothy C. Baodo Wardrobe stylist

Growing up, Timothy C. Baodo moved around the world with his military father until landing in Phoenix, where he’s found his niche as a wardrobe stylist – a job that’s not only his passion but also a craft he considers an art form. While Baodo designs new projects for fashion shows, he also creates looks for his clients (and even their kids) through personal shopping, naming his peers and department stores like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus as inspiration for building wardrobes. Though Baodo’s most “prized person” is his eight-year-old son, he still loves a great watch, noting that it conveys one’s taste and social status with the ability to serve as a conversational icebreaker. Baodo is also all about fashion that works, noting that his style is very utilitarian – comfortable work shoes, seasonal fabrics, utilizing his pockets, and always having a briefcase or backpack that will hold his laptop while completing his ensemble. A tailored look is also key. “There is nothing more inspiring than a well-tailored suit. It’s like looking at art. From the fine craft of the suit and the colors used to the materials and the detail of the seam to the shoes and finely woven handkerchief, it tells a story.”

Director of leadership development at Banner Health Kevin Patterson wears many hats: father of two, husband, businessman, and community activist (he’s involved in Equality Arizona and running for Phoenix City Council). Similarly, his style reflects his life – versatile and eclectic. He gravitates toward classic colors (gray, black and blue) but also loves to throw in pops of color, pairing timeless pieces with bright ties and patterned shirts. One of his many pairs of Ray-Ban sunglasses often ties his look together. When it comes to fashion, he encourages others to be bold and courageous, adding that a great look can be as inexpensive or expensive as you’d like. And he means it; though Patterson loves Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and ties from Salvatore Ferragamo and Burberry, he believes the right look is often about attitude and how he wears it, and not as much about the brands. To that end, he rocks T-shirts from Urban Outfitters, H&M and Target, which he frequents with his kids. His fashion influences? The happenings of his everyday life. “One moment I’m in dad mode, the next I’m leading work meetings, and then off to a political event. I need to be able to add a blazer or tie, then switch to the rolled sleeves look, all in one day.”

or the past five years, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Arizona Chapter has hosted the Man & Woman of the Year campaign, a spirited 10-week fundraising competition among a select group of individuals in the community focused on raising money in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors. This year’s candidates – from cancer survivors themselves to medical professionals to local celebrities – are among the most impressive yet. Read about some of them here. Mark Asher: An Arizona native and former sports radio talk show host who, today, serves as a member of the leadership team at Southwest Wealth Strategies and co-hosts Money Radio’s Business for Breakfast morning show. Mother Road Brewing Co. – Flagstaff The “Mother Road” was the moniker given to U.S. Highway 66 by Grapes of Wrath author John Steinbeck, as he shared the fictional story of a family who traveled the road in hopes of finding new beginnings. Mother Road Brewing Co. now resides along a portion of this storied road in Flagstaff, standing in homage to the lost highway as well as a symbol of owners Michael and Alissa Marquess’ journey to find their new beginning in the world of craft beer. ince 2015, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West has displayed a unique blend of history, art, educational programs, and cultural events. The Smithsonian affiliate museum has been named the 2016 and 2017 “Best Western Museum” by True West magazine, and this summer, it will feature exhibitions fit for a cowboy, including Western film posters, Grand Canyon portrayals and John Coleman’s bronze sculptures.

Grandeur exhibition, which will feature more than 50 portrayals of the Grand Canyon from the 1850s to the 1930s. Some of the highlighted artists will include Thomas Moran, Eanger Irving Couse, Gustave Baumann and Gunnar Widforss. The repertoire will comprise oil paintings, watercolors and prints in impressionism, naturalism and abstraction styles. The exhibition will run June 6 through Dec. 31.

Of Spirit and Flame: John Coleman Bronzes from the Collection of Frankie and Howard Alper will highlight Arizona-based sculptor and painter John Coleman. Considered one of the nation’s most renowned contemporary artists, Coleman was devoted to telling stories about Native American culture through his sculptures and paintings. Coleman has been expressing his passion for American mythology through artwork for the last 50 years. “Each piece tells a story written by my hands,” he says, noting that his works are rich in metaphors. “The metaphor is more powerful than the reality. The mythological tale is romantic, whereas the reality doesn’t resonate immediately.” This ongoing exhibition will open June 6, featuring a selection of more than 20 bronze sculptures that will be incorporated to the museum. Valued at more than $6 million, with over 5,000 film posters, lobby cards and 1800s memorabilia, the Rennard Strickland Collection of Western Film History was acquired by the museum and Arizona State University in November 2016. Some of the posters in the collection are from movies produced in nitrate film, and the posters are the only record of the films’ existence. Curated from the world’s largest —and most historically important and inclusive — collection of Western film graphic arts, the exhibit will debut June 20. The featured original film posters will include the 1939 John Ford film Stagecoach, the 1931 Wesley Ruggles film Cimarron and the film Life and Adventures of Buffalo Bill. The exhibit will be on view through Sept. 30, 2018.

VO is a true homage to owner Nick Neuman’s memories of visiting his mother’s family in Italy. As such, every element of the menu, including the cocktails, ties back to the central and northern regions of Italy, from cioppino and tagliatelle to ragu and – its Bronze Boar? “The Bronze Boar ($12) is inspired by the Rob Roy cocktail [the scotchbased cousin of the Manhattan], but true to Nick’s vision, we use Italian-based elements and our own little twists,” says Jake Russell, EVO’s bar manager. “The name itself is in part a tribute to the wild boar that roam Tuscany and in part for our base spirit, Pig’s Nose Scotch Whisky.” According to Russell, this spirit is “as smooth as a pig’s nose” and far more approachable than some of the grainer options on the market. “We use a mixing glass to build the drink, adding Casa Martelletti Sweet Vermouth and Luxardo Sangue Morlacco – a cherry liqueur – to the whisky base.” “Before stirring, we add Angostura Bitters so it truly has a hint of each of the five basic flavors our taste buds crave: sweet, salty, bitter, sour and savory.” While building the cocktail, Russell rinses an Old-Fashioned glass in absinthe and lets a handmade ice cube mold itself to the glass, eventually removing the excess water before pouring in the liquid. The oval isn’t the only thing at Charlotte, though. hough Western influences abound in the Valley, it’s been a long time since pistols have been drawn on a dusty trail outside the saloon. The focus is geared more toward Southwest sophistication, with the area’s high-class luxury resorts and five-star dining. But make no mistake, the Old West is alive and thriving. While you’ll find no shortage of Bentleys, Porsches and Ferraris around town, at the Arabian Horse Show – hosted at WestWorld of Scottsdale earlier this year – the lots were overflowing with heavy-duty trucks. Sumo-sized pickups pulled enormous trailers, looming over mere sedans and sports cars and competing for bragging rights for the biggest, strongest and most capable.

While Chevrolet, Ram and GMC all offer three-quarter and one-ton pickup trucks, the Ford F-250 Super Duty King Ranch is the 900-pound gorilla of the bunch. It’s been completely redesigned for 2017 with an all-new aluminum body structure and is available in 44 configurations – including two- or four-wheel drive, single or dual rear wheels, and a wide choice of cabs, bed sizes, trim levels and engine choices. Ford certainly has the market covered, owning the title of bestselling truck for 38 straight years. I drove the top-of-the-line Super Duty King Ranch, powered by a 6.7-liter diesel with 440 horsepower and an unholy 925 pound-feet of torque. The towing capacity of 15,000 pounds is easily enough to tow the largest horse trailer. Inside, the King Ranch is luxurious enough to make Bentley owners jealous. Trimmed in rich, embossed Mesa leather, the saddlery is beyond comfortable. But most impressive are driver-aid enhancements that differentiate the Super Duty from its competitors. Those include 360-degree cameras that give a top-down view and reverse guidance for trailer connecting. A blind-spot information system with a trailer tow provides up to 33 feet of visibility to monitor areas that otherwise may not be visible to the driver. Overall, there is little to dislike about the Super Duty. Perhaps the biggest plus is the absolute fun of driving such a large, capable, luxurious, wickedly gorgeous truck — and the fact that I got to pretend I was a wealthy cowboy for a week, driving a luxury truck in the “West’s Most Western Town.”

S

cottsdale is no stranger to pool parties, but never one quite like this. Opened earlier this spring in Old Town next to Brat House, Rack Scottsdale is the city’s only true pool hall lounge, complete with billiards, a full kitchen, a jukebox and a bar. “If you think about the Old Town scene, there are already so many clubs, restaurants and bars. I wanted this to be something very different, a concept that has stood the test of time, and with the right tweaks for the local crowd, would be a home run for the area,” says owner Ed Archuleta, a 25-year veteran of the bar and hotel industries, including work at Pointe South Mountain, The Phoenician and Caesar’s Palace in Lake Tahoe. At 5,000 square feet, the space itself boasts four indoor pool tables as well as one outside on the 1,800-square-foot patio, each made of chrome and customdesigned in sleek blue versus the traditional (and outdated) green felt.

“Beyond the tables themselves, those expecting to walk into a smoky, dark pool hall will be pleasantly surprised,” says Archuleta, who outfitted the space with LED lighting and custom booths and patio seating, which give the lounge a far more welcoming vibe than stereotypical pool hall. Another pleasant surprise? The food and drink menus. Thanks to a full kitchen, the venue has both bar-themed favorites ranging from buffalo wings, made-to-order burgers and beer-battered onion rings to specialties of the house including a chicken Parmesan sandwich with homemade marinara sauce. “Behind the bar, we, of course, offer beer, wine and spirits,” Archuleta says. “But we really wanted to focus on developing some signature cocktails beyond the standard options.” As such, Rack Scottsdale offers as many as six different types of signature mules on any given night, including: SO SCOTTSDALE! |
