MEN’S HEALTH SottoPelle® answers your questions. Do men need hormone replacement therapy too? Yes. It’s a common misconception that women are the only ones who need hormone replacement therapy as they age. Many men often believe that feeling constantly tired, having the inability to gain muscle mass as a part of aging can negatively impact your ability to perform at work, relationships with friends and in your body and life. Every man experiences a gradual decline in hormone production as he gets older, finds himself having less sexual desire, gaining weight, and losing muscle mass and feeling unmotivated, depressed and moody. Most men who don’t have hormone replacement therapy believe they have to live with these symptoms as part of normal aging. Nothing could be further from the truth! SottoPelle® hormone replacement therapy can help bring back vitality and quality of life.

Dads Deserve the Best! CELEBRATE GOOD HEALTH AS A FAMILY MOM & DAD CAN BOTH TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS GREAT OFFER!

Understanding Hair Extensions LIMITED TIME OFFER

$300 OFF!

Your first Hair extension service

CALL NOW! (480) 663.8994 Jo Paris Salon & Spa stylists have a creative flare and passion for helping clients achieve looks they never thought they could have. The best part of their job is when they do hair extensions on someone for the first time., Its very rewarding. Sometimes their clients cry tears of joy and amazement, it can be very emotional. Without hair extensions, they would never be able to achieve the look they’ve always dreamed about having. they love being able to help someone reflect their inner beauty. Are hair extensions high maintenance? Hair extensions are not ‘high’ maintenance however do require a steady regimen using the proper tools such as brushes and certain shampoos and conditioners. You can continue to use your flat iron and blow dryer. Three to six months is the average amount of time to wear these extensions before reapplying them, due to hair growth. Do hair extensions break your hair? Hair extensions can be great for your hair. With proper application and removal, clients find that their hair is actually growing, rather than breaking. Breakage comes either from the type of bond used or if the maintenance regimen is not adhered to. A stylist’s patience is paramount when applying and removing extensions. That’s the potential for most breakage. Do hair extensions look fake? We use only 100% human hair that can last up to a year or two. All strands are small, individual pieces so they move freely, like your own hair. With the I-Tip application technique we use, extremely discrete Microbeads are clamped to securely hold each hair extension strand in place. That means your hair can be long and full without the worry of slippage. This amazing method has

SS_12_21IN_Jun16.indd 13

absolutely no chemicals, no glue, and no heat. I-Tip extensions are available in 34 colors to match or create any color. Blending is critical and strand placement is an artistic process that requires special training. Jo Paris stylists have received additional training to develop the cutting and blending techniques needed to achieve this natural overall look. Call for a complimentary consultation to see what style and length works best for you!

elcome to our man issue! Here, we’re featuring all things, well, manly. We’re talking unique dude food (page 116), must-haves for your man cave (page 92), and custom barreling of bourbon and whiskey (page 70). Not to mention the ultimate in luxury cologne (page 93) and extravagance on wheels, whether you’re a biker (page 103) or love a head-turning auto (page 101). On this month’s cover is Scottsdale’s own Kevin Streelman, a PGA Tour golfer currently playing through his ninth consecutive year on the tour (page 44). Streelman gives us a look into his life on the links and off of them too – he’s also a musician and father of two. And speaking of fathers, as a tribute to the great men in our community, our feature spotlights seven dads doing it all (page 48), meaning these men are not only fathers, but they are also committed to their careers and making a difference in the community. We also got to know three visionary men: Nathan Day, who created a product – the LugBug – to help make parents’ lives easier (page 32), and Will and Robert Brunner, the brotherly duo behind a fashion-forward golf apparel line, Devereux Proper Threads (page 27). It’s hard to believe it’s already time for temperatures to start warming up (and that’s putting it lightly). So, what’s a Valley dweller to do other than escape? Stay put on a staycation, that’s what! We sought out five beautiful Valley resorts that will keep you feeling cool and ohso-content with special summer rates, spectacular pools and seasonal happenings (page 81). With that, here’s to the start of summer, staying cool, soaking up Scottsdale, and most importantly, to all the fathers and men for who you are (Dad, that includes you!).

ON THE FOREFRONT OF FASHION

From golf clubs to garments, Scottsdale brothers find success in transitional apparel BY STEPHANIE LOUGH

I

PHOTOS BY MARK MORGAN

t’s been said golf is 10 percent skill and 90 percent mental. But for many, a large part of golf is about style. For Scottsdale brothers Will and Robert Brunner, the loud colors and clashing patterns that are traditionally regarded as the garb of the game didn’t quite resonate with fashionminded men.

up close “Golf apparel was very loud in design and did not fit my personality,” says Robert, a self-described multi-degree who graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design Merchandising in Los Angeles. “I felt like a phony … We love to golf, but also love to look good and be stylish.” Will, a father of three girls who regularly seeks “a break from the glitter and tea parties” on the course, echoes his brother’s sentiments. “Golf is a sport we love and just as equally we love fashion. Men’s fashion really started to evolve over the last few years but it never really embraced golf.” Through their frustration and distaste of tried-and-true argyles, the Brunners recognized their opportunity. Together, they founded Devereux Proper Threads, a golf apparel line that was more refined and easier to transition off the course. Robert serves as creative director while Will is the director of operations. “Our brand is designed to give men a one-stop shop for apparel whether you are golfing, eating at your favorite restaurant or just kicking it at a local bar,” Robert says. “At Devereux, we design with an eye on the arts and trends and produce an aesthetic that men can relate to if they are in search of a comfortable, easy-to-wear brand.” Armed with their passion for golf and knack for style – an interest instilled in them by their fashionista grandmother, in which Devereux’s name pays homage to – they had another advantage of living in their target market: Scottsdale. “I realized there was a void in the market for proper apparel that I could wear out to the bar after a day on the course,” says Robert, a frequenter of Old Town Scottsdale’s famous nightlife. “The lifestyle of Scottsdale is what inspires the culture of our brand and pieces. Scottsdale is definitely a trendsetter city, with a lot of opportunity for more artistic and boutique brands.” Will adds, “Devereux easily transcends from the course to any other daily activity whether that is going to a nice dinner, heading back to the office or just hanging out at a resort.” The Devereux collections include

all the golf wardrobe essentials: shirts, sweaters, shorts, pants and hats. With price points starting at $75 for shirts and $145 for sweaters, Robert describes the line as “more elevated and proper” than other popular brands and promises undeniable quality. With slim fits, classic statement pieces and on-trend colors, the Brunner brothers have developed a sophisticated look that will seamlessly take the modern golfer from the office to the course to the post-game happy hour. “We value ourselves as different because we are very in touch with current menswear and incorporate unique designs to our proper golf line,” Will says. Thanks to the quality, value and originality of the collections, Devereux is quickly becoming a go-to brand for styleconscious athletes. “Sports Illustrated Golf” included Devereux on their “Favorite Things” gift guide, and the response across menswear blogs and at trade shows has been more than esteemed. Perhaps their biggest “break” came earlier this year when Devereux officially signed golfer Danny Lee as a brand ambassador. Lee is well-known as a rising star and called “one of the top golfers to watch” in 2016. He was the youngest player at the time to win the U.S. Amateur Championship in 2008, won the Greenbrier Classic in 2015 and finished fourth in this year’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. Lee has also been called the PGA Selfie King. While the accolade may

not impress veterans of the game, the Brunners know social media is an invaluable tool to gain exposure and connect with new customers who share the brand’s values. Using the hashtag #ProperThreads, Lee is helping to bring Devereux to the forefront of news feeds. Their marketing techniques aren’t the only thing the duo is keeping fresh. They promise to deliver an ever-evolving collection that stays a step ahead of the trends. “We like to keep things current and that is what Devereux offers,” Will says. “We believe that Devereux will become a staple in a man’s wardrobe. Our pieces encompass many aspects of a man’s daily life, and we want Devereux to become his go-to brand for all of it.” A large part of Devereux’s mission is not only to become the standard for menswear, but to also become a reliable lifestyle guide and source of inspiration. Their company blog, Proper Threads, focuses not only on fashion trends, but provides how-to-wear tips, course recommendations and even cocktail recipes and relationship advice. “We hope for the Devereux brand to become a resource for all the guys out there that seek more out of their wardrobe,” Robert says. “We’d like to be a part of educating men in this way.” The Brunners admit their biggest hurdle has been opening the minds (and closets) of those stuck in their old habits. “Look at Tiger in 1999, and this is how golfers are still dressing today. Times have changed, and some golfers are still stuck in this era,” Will says. “It is amazing how properly fitting clothes really changes how a man looks. The challenge was, and still is, getting this message across.” Even if they can’t teach old dogs new tricks, Devereux’s vision is above par for the course in the golf industry. With an estimated 3 million new players expected to pick up clubs in the next five years, the large majority are younger men who are more invested in fashion than ever before. And thanks to Devereux, they will be looking as good (and probably better) than their swings. For more information and to shop, visit www.dvrxgolf.com.

A Connoisseur of Color Rodney Gentry, stylist and color expert at Sachi Studios

Rodney Gentry is one of those people whose Midwestern charm and enthusiasm can’t help but rub off on you. And in his line of work, that’s certainly a plus. Gentry is possibly the Valley’s most adored hair stylist. His clients (some of them might better be described as fans) will happily travel across state lines in order to have him handle their tresses. Many of them simply trust nobody else with their hair. Having operated his own salon in Chicago before relocating to Scottsdale, Gentry brings big city expertise to the Valley, which he combines with his own unique passion for styling and coloring at Sachi Studios. Each client enjoys a truly personalized service. Gentry considers the condition and history of the hair before recommending a treatment program, style and (if desired) color. His focus is on nurturing hair back to full health at the same time as providing stunning styles and fabulous colors. “It’s my goal to make each client feel truly beautiful – and to leave them with a style that they can easily recreate themselves every day,” he says. Part of this comes down to the right products. Gentry only uses the very best brands available, not skimping when it comes to choosing those products that will bring about dramatic improvements in the hair’s condition. This applies to everything, from daily

shampoos to the color treatments that he uses, which are enzyme-based rather than peroxide-based. This means they enhance the condition of the hair as well as give it a wonderfully vibrant color. Color is Gentry’s true passion. From full hair makeovers to the subtlest of highlights or lowlights, he works with his clients to select the colors that are right for their skin tone, the shape of their face and even their preferred color of clothing. “Every single person is unique in their coloring, which is why personalized consultation is so important,” he explains. “You really have to care about each and every client in order to bring out the best in their hair. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to beautiful hair!” Gentry also believes that it is important to stay abreast of trends. From the Oscars to the latest catwalk shows, he’s up to speed with seasonal styles and colors in order to enable each of his clients to achieve a touch of Hollywood glamour. From super straight blonde locks to superbly highlighted plaits with the tiniest of accessories woven in, Gentry is available to provide advice and guidance on how those in the Valley can look their very best this summer, both color-wise and style-wise. If you haven’t yet checked out Sachi Studios then you’re not giving your hair the love it deserves!

BAR BRAWLER TO BOSS MAN

Kyle Mason makes every pour count BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

o say that Kyle Mason has been busy this past year would be an understatement. On the personal side, he got engaged and welcomed a new baby daughter into the world. On the professional side, Mason won last summer’s “Bar Brawl” series at the Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa’s famed jade bar, and he then took over as general manager of La Bocca Urban Kitchen + Wine Bar on High Street in the fall. Then, this past February, Mason joined fellow jade bar alumni Micah Olson, Jason Asher, Clint Spotleson, Jillian Vose and Tyson Buhler for a reunion during Arizona Cocktail Week and induction to the venue’s coveted Hall of Fame. “Back in college, I pitched for the University of New Mexico,” Mason says. “If you told me back then that I would be ‘getting my number retired’ for highballs over baseballs, I wouldn’t have believed you.” With his move to La Bocca, he plans to bring the same spirit of innovation – both with the team they’ve assembled in-house and with the now-evolving menu – he enjoyed for so many years to the Mediterranean-inspired restaurant. “We’re building one helluva dream team,” Mason says.

Etc.

Tell us about this Dream Team. Our parent company not only brought me on, but also superstar sommelier Ty Crandall, United States Bartenders’ Guild (USBG) Spirits Professional JT Tillman, resident “beer geek” Nick Nitz and USBG bartender Tony Pharias. We are like kids in a candy store together. How did you get your start? Believe it or not, I got my start at Outback Steakhouse in high school. Of course, there was the Sanctuary, Hotel Valley Ho and Montelucia too, but those came after a lot of hard work at the “Home of the Bloomin’ Onion.” What cocktail won you Bar Brawl? I made a series of drinks over the course of the competition all based on various ingredients thrown at us “Iron Chef” style. One was “Can’t Drive 55” in honor of rock icon Sammy Hagar, made with his own brand of Hawaiian-inspired rum, which is called Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, as well as gin, Chartreuse liqueur, fresh pineapple juice and mint. GET A HANDLE ON FATHERHOOD

cottsdale real estate developer and father of three, Nathan Day, added “inventor” to his resume out of necessity – and injury. “I dislocated my shoulder while lugging around my daughter’s car seat,” Day says. “After much research, I was shocked to discover there was nothing on the market to make baby carriers easier to hold.” The solution: Day designed his own sturdy, easy-to-use handle that attaches to any baby carrier and reduces the strain on parents’ shoulders and arms. Aptly named the LugBug (www.lugbug.com), his product hit the market last fall and created a buzz in the baby product industry. “I would love to see LugBug solve common problems for parents and make their lives easier.” Day has more family products in the works, continuing to find inspiration from his own children – Lola (6), Thalia (4) and Lucía Rose (6 months) – as they enter different stages of their lives. As the CEO of Cypress Development Group, Day also enjoys having something his children can truly be a part of and appreciate. “My girls love getting their hands in the mix at the assembly warehouse. They look at LugBug and think of all the babies, not ROI, profit margins, POS or logistics. And it makes me think ‘wow that is a lot of babies!’”

Etc.

What were the biggest challenges faced when creating the LugBug? Manufacturing timelines and finding the right manufacturing partner. My idea started with a sketch, which evolved into making LugBug a reality with molds, testing, patents and now manufacturing. It took about two years to get to the final, consumer-ready design. How do you find balance with work, fatherhood and now being an inventor? The balance is how well you can function on the least amount of sleep. With newborns you’re used to getting no sleep, so when you have a toddler, a newborn, a real estate company and a side invention, you get used to even less sleep! What advice do you have for other busy fathers? Let your kids be a part of what you are doing. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

ust a little inspiration is all it took for Valley entrepreneur and father Chris Ronzio to change the tune of his style. “I used to do the layered double polo look, and then my wife taught me that brown and black don’t go together,” Ronzio says. “My style has definitely developed and evolved over time.” A trip to Florence, Italy, last year during fashion week helped Ronzio care more about how he dressed. “Dressing well is a confidence builder, and confidence makes a lot of difference in business.” Versatility also plays a key role for Ronzio. From home to office and everything in-between, Ronzio aims to be prepared for any setting he may encounter. “My go-to outfit for work is dark jeans, a polo shirt and a blazer paired with wingtips for winter and penny loafers for the summer,” Ronzio says. On the weekends, you’ll likely catch this businessman a bit more relaxed, sporting a Lululemon T-shirt and maybe Sperry Top-Sider shoes instead of his Cole Haan footwear. Ronzio’s other favorite designers and stores include J. Crew, Ted Baker, Hugo Boss and ZARA. One thing Ronzio won’t leave the house without? His watch. “My wife gave me a Daniel Wellington watch the day after my son was born, and I’ve barely taken it off. It’s simple and goes with everything.”

FASHION BY INSPIRATION

Entrepreneur Chris Ronzio shares his evolution of style BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

If you could live during any decade because of its fashion, what would it be? I’d say the future. Specifically, the 2110s. One hundred years ago they hardly had synthetic fibers, so I’d love to see what happens in the next 100! Where might one find you and your family hanging out around town? I have a toddler who dresses nicer than I do most days, so you’d probably find us at some shopping area (with a splash pad nearby!). How has being a dad changed your style? I wouldn’t say that being a dad has changed my style. Now I just need to plan out what I’m going to wear before I go to bed, or get up a little bit earlier. And I tend to change more now because yogurt, chalk and applesauce don’t go well with any outfit.

W

hen it comes to fashion, Tamara Bickley takes more than clothing into account. As a certified professional makeup artist, what she dons on her face is equally important – you could even say her style begins with her face. “My style is artistic, classy and upto-date, but not too trendy,” says Bickley, who specializes in makeup for weddings, TV and film and modeling, just to name a few. Bickley notes that color is important, but when she is in a professional environment, she predominately dresses in black. No matter the color or occasion, though, Bickley’s style shines through. “To make up for the lack of color, I choose interesting textures, accents and fabric cutouts, then I add a piece of statement jewelry.” For Bickley, every day is an opportunity to dress to impress – even if you catch her in a pair of jeans, she’ll glam it up with a dressy top and high heels. Understandably, Bickley is judged quite a bit for her makeup and overall look since that is her profession, and she knows first impressions certainly count. “I’m compelled to wear perfect, tasteful makeup at all times. I do it all, including false lashes, and it is nice to be asked, ‘Can you do my eyes just like yours?’” In other words, this cosmetic queen is never 100 percent dressed without makeup completing her look.

BLUSHING BEAUTY

What are the hot colors for makeup this summer? Think tropical, such as bright shades of blue, coral and pink, particularly for the eyes. Dewy, fresh skin that is not overly contoured is also on point. What are some of your favorite styles? I’m a big fan of the edgy, rocker-chic look. A leather jacket with some studs or zippers, a chunky belt, skinny jeans and sexy heels all call to me. When enjoying a night out, what are some of your favorite spots to go? A night out for me means dining out, and the restaurant has to have a cool vibe and decent music. As a Chicago native, I also seek out good food, and some of my favorite spots are Windsor, Culinary Dropout, The Henry and Roka Akor.

KEVIN STREELMAN TALKS ABOUT HIS LOVE FOR THE GAME OF GOLF BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTOS BY MARK MORGAN

F

or most people, golfing is a luxury, a way to unwind and perhaps even an escape from day-to-day stressors. For Scottsdale resident Kevin Streelman, it is much more than that. It is his way of life. Currently playing through his ninth consecutive year on the PGA Tour and his 15th year as a professional golf player, Streelman says playing the game of golf is what he was meant to do. “While most of my friends headed off for careers on Wall Street, I ventured to South Dakota to start a mini tour called the Dakotas Tour.” This move was right after Streelman’s graduation from Duke University in the spring of 2001. Streelman says he went on to do whatever it took to make sure he got to play just about anywhere along the way, driving in his mother’s 1996 Nissan Altima for six years across the country and logging more than 350,000 miles just to play the game of golf. After three wins on this and other mini tours in 2007, Kevin earned his PGA Tour card. An exciting rookie year on the PGA Tour, with four top-10 finishes and a 35th place finish in the FedEx Cup, paved the way for Kevin’s win of the 2009 Kodak Challenge in his sophomore year. He continued to improve his standing on tour during the next three years with 14 top-10 finishes and a 25th place finish in the FedEx Cup in 2010.

Kevin recorded his first PGA Tour victory in 2013 at the Tampa Bay Championship, followed by a second win in 2014 at the Travelers Championship. Kevin closed his final round of the Travelers Championship with seven consecutive birdies, which set a record for the most consecutive birdies made to win a tournament. Today, he’s ranked 111th on the Career PGA Tour Money List with an official world golf ranking of 123rd and a ranking of 66th in the FedEx Cup. Streelman loves the game of golf but also understands, like any sport, it isn’t without its challenges. “It is amazing how one day the swing can feel so natural and easy, and the next day it seems so foreign,” Streelman says. “This holds true even for the top golfers in the world.” However, the upredictable nature of the game doesn’t stop Streelman from hitting the links nearly every day. The strategic play and the difficultness behind the game of golf is what keeps him coming back, otherwise Streelman says he wouldn’t have anything new to work toward. “We never truly achieve our potential in the game, which can be frustrating, but I sure do love working to get better at it each and every day.” Streelman says that the greatest part of playing professional golf is having the opportunity to compete on the course with the chance to win when he is on the PGA Tour. “Being able to go head-to-head with your competitors as you battle on the greatest golfing stage in the world, with everything on the line, is the reason I play the game,” Streelman says. He also doesn’t mind collecting the winnings, trophies and jackets, but at the end of the day, it is the memories of the competition that Streelman says he cherishes the most.

BEYOND THE COURSE Aside from the actual game, one of the most challenging things about playing every day is the balance between Streelman’s life on the course and his life off the course. Streelman is the father of two, his daughter Sophie and the recent

addition of his son Rhett, so as you can imagine, he is constantly going between the roles of a dad and golfer. “The life we live is that of a traveling circus,” Streelman says. “It is amazing how a nine-pound individual like our new son can add 50 pounds of travel accessories and luggage to the mix.” Streelman and his wife Courtney can’t help but laugh at the comical aspect of it all, however, he says he wouldn’t have it any other way. “Sure, there are some sleepless nights and tough plane rides, but having Courtney, Sophie and Rhett with me is extremely important. I truly wouldn’t want it any other way.” You may wonder if Streelman plans to share his love of the golf game with his children as they grow. In one word, his answer is, absolutely. “I really hope my children have an interest in learning the game of golf,” he says. “It would truly be a joy to teach them the various aspects of the game.” However, Streelman is realistic and understands they simply may not enjoy the same things he does as they grow and is willing to let them find their own passions and course in life. “I’d never force anything on my children, but if they do find themselves interested in golf, I’d certainly be available to help them learn the game.” For this pro, golf isn’t the only sport he enjoys; he is a self-proclaimed sports nut. “Being from Chicago and growing up in the Michael Jordan era, the Bulls, Blackhawks and Cubs are my favorites,” he says. As a boy, Streelman grew up going to Wrigley Field with his dad and watching his team play ball. As for this season, he is looking forward to things with a little gleam in his eye. “I know it’s early in the season, but the Cubbies are sure looking unstoppable.” He is also a big college sports fan, following the Duke Blue Devils and Alabama football, plus his wife was a competitive swimmer at Arizona State University. Streelman admits he also cheers on two hometown teams, the Arizona Cardinals and the Coyotes. Beyond sports, Streelman is actually quite musically inclined. The golfing star

has been playing guitar since his senior year in high school. “I grew up in a very musical family and after trying piano, drums, trombone and choir, I thought guitar was by far the coolest option,” he says. He also thought playing guitar might give him an edge in another part of his life – with the ladies, naturally. However, while the guitar really didn’t help him much in that aspect, he still plays today when the opportunity strikes. “I absolutely love getting away and playing some guitar. It is a great reprieve from the game of golf and very relaxing for me.” Streelman jokingly adds that, in golf terms, he is about an 8 handicap on guitar. In addition to the golf and guitar, he is also the co-chair of an event in Raleigh, North Carolina, each fall called Tenth Avenue North Classic, which is a celebrity golf tournament, concert and VIP dinner that raises funds for ministries. “I am passionate about music and have become close friends with a number of bands and performing artists,” he says. A few years ago, Streelman and Tenth Avenue North, a music group, teamed up to combine their passions for golf and music in order to create a charitable event to help support all the ministries in which they believe. This year the event, coming up Aug. 15, is heading into its fourth year. As for life back home here in Scottsdale, Streelman and his family are simply in love with this city. “I fell in love with Scottsdale the first time I drove into this desert oasis with incredible weather and year-round golf,” Streelman says. That was back in 2002 when he had $20 to his name and simply a dream of becoming a great golfer. Streelman loved everything about the Valley, from its great restaurants to the people and, of course, the golf. “Scottsdale, Arizona, was the location of my own American dream. I came here with nothing, and the city and the game of golf blessed me with more than I could have ever dreamed. We love Scottsdale and plan to be proud residents for the rest of our lives.”

Seven men committed to their careers, the community and, most importantly, their kids

A father is a role model, provider and caretaker who imparts wisdom and knowledge. He’s often the hero in a child’s world, able to fix and do things with strength and purpose like nobody else. Beyond being present as Dad, his role may also span the likes of executive and entrepreneur or coach and community advocate. Or, perhaps, a little bit of all of the above. Here, we introduce seven men who are truly dads doing it all, making a difference at work, in the community and at home.

ERIC LUOMA

OCCUPATION: President and owner, Cactus Flower Florists CHILDREN: Landon Tate (3) and Cayden John (6)

What do you do during the day? My day starts with waking our sleeping kiddos (or being woken up by them with kisses), making breakfast and lunches for school, and dropping off one of our boys at school. After that, the business defines the direction of my work day. With five retail stores, three companies and 100 employees, there is never a shortage of things to be done. There are different “hats” that I need to wear throughout the day – manager, flower buyer, IT guy, accounting, HR and driver – each one is rewarding in its own way. My day ends with a T-ball game or practice then dinner as a family and my favorite part: story time. Repeat the next day. How did you choose your career? My career chose me at the tender age of four. In 1972, my mother started Cactus Flower Florists when she opened North Scottsdale’s first flower shop. I quite literally grew up in the flower business and did everything from watering plants and helping customers to donning holiday costumes for deliveries. Eventually, I became a delivery driver in high school and managed one of our Tempe shops while I was at ASU. My parents always encouraged me to try working in another industry, but I kept finding ways to nurture the flower business. Today, I have the pleasure and the honor of working alongside my mom, dad and sister in our blooming family business. Which philanthropic organizations are you involved in? The flower business lends itself to engaging the

community and supporting local charities. I have served as a member and in leadership roles for the Scottsdale Active 20-30 Club, EC70, Entrepreneur’s Organization, Scottsdale Leadership and, most recently, the Scottsdale Charros. Why are these organizations important to you? Having the opportunity to be in an organization of like-minded business people gives me the chance to share business ideas and challenges and create lifelong friendships all while giving back to my Scottsdale community where I was born and raised. What is the most challenging part about being a dad? Do you know that feeling when you get a flashback of your youth and some of the situations that you found yourself in? With two boys, I JUNE 2016 |

can already see a couple steps ahead of them and need to make the decision to either step in or step back. Most often, I choose to step back and let them learn firsthand because I believe that every experience helps build the foundation of who you are in the future. What is the most rewarding part about being a dad? Watching two small humans slowly develop into great young men. I couldn’t be more proud of my two boys. What has fatherhood taught you? Family first. My boys and my wife are the center of my universe. Fatherhood has taught me to be a better man. Not perfect, but they are cool with that. Describe being a dad in three words. Laughter, love, family.

DR. STEVEN HANSEN OCCUPATION: President and CEO, Arizona Humane Society (AHS) CHILDREN: Graham (17) and Allison (20)

What do you do during the day? I get to experience first-hand the day-to-day lifesaving work that our passionate staff and volunteers commit themselves to each and every day of the year. I interact with staff, donors, board members, volunteers and partners to discuss current AHS programs and processes in an effort to plan future strategic initiatives, funding needs and plans designed to sustain AHS for another 60 years while also continuing to transform Maricopa County into one of the best places to be a pet. How did you choose your career? I always had a strong interest in the health and welfare of animals and distinctly remember visiting my local animal shelter as a kid in order to retrieve my Brittany Spaniel, Brandy, who had gone missing. This interest drove my academic path and led to a career in animal welfare. What is your favorite part about your career? I love working with animals and people and making a difference in both of their lives. One thing that really drew me to AHS is the organization’s belief that people are also really important. There’s always someone on the other side. The human-animal bond and that relationship between the pet and person is what it’s all about. This is critical for our organization as we strive to offer resources to pet owners in need so they can keep their pets in their homes despite any hardships they may be facing. Which philanthropic organizations are you involved in? I am passionate about and spend my time and

energy on the AHS as well as the Morris Animal Foundation, American College of Animal Welfare and Maricopa County’s Alliance for Companion Animals. These organizations are also committed to bettering the lives of animals and people. How do you balance work, community involvement and being a dad? For me, the key to balance is not to separate work and personal life but instead to incorporate them together. I see daily life as a stream that doesn’t separate but instead works in concert. This allows me to be flexible with both family and work life. What is the most challenging part about being a dad? The most challenging part about being a parent is trying to prepare your children for the SO SCOTTSDALE! |

opportunities and challenges that life presents while allowing them to make their own decisions. What advice do you have for future fathers? Enjoy every phase of your kids’ lives because they change so quickly. What has fatherhood taught you? Be patient, have faith and ask questions. Describe being a dad in three words. Exhausting, exhilarating, priceless. What is your family motto or saying? Attitude is everything. What values do you want to instill in your children? Aim very high and pursue your dreams with determination and hard work. Make sure you have fun along the way.

BRIAN JOSEPH

OCCUPATION: Fire captain/paramedic, City of Scottsdale Fire Department; owner, Brian Joseph Enterprises CHILDREN: Brandon (7), Carson (stepson, 9) and Hannah (stepdaughter, 11)

What do you do during the day? I am on shift for 10 days per month, working 48-hour shifts. On the days I’m not working, I spend time with my family (fiancee, son and future stepchildren), exercise and run my consulting business, where I serve as a medical insurance appeals writer for air ambulance flights. The end of the day usually finishes with helping my son with homework and making sure the needs of my family are being met. How did you choose your career? I believe my career chose me. I started college at Northern Arizona University with the intent on being an attorney or teacher, but I began taking some life support classes and fell in love with it. Shortly after, I started as a volunteer firefighter. That led to working as a firefighter/paramedic for Rural-Metro Fire Department in Scottsdale, and ultimately led me to where I am now. During my off-duty time, I was given the opportunity to use my knowledge of emergency paramedicine to author air ambulance appeals. This prompted me to launch Brian Joseph Enterprises. What is your favorite part about your career? Each day is different, challenging and teaches me new things. When someone calls 911, my crew and I have the opportunity to bring some type of order to their moment of chaos, regardless of the type of emergency. What is one of your fondest memories with your children? When my son met my now fiancee and her two kids. This was something that she

and I stressed about, but when they met they seemed as if they had been lifelong friends. Watching that relationship develop has been amazing and reinforces the importance of family, problem-solving and compromise. What is the most rewarding part about being a dad? Getting to teach my kids things about the world and watching them learn. Getting to participate in their lives is by far the most rewarding part about being a dad. What advice do you have for future fathers? Remember that you’re not perfect and that no matter what you’re doing, your children are watching and learning from you. Be honest with yourself; know what you’re capable of and what you are not. Surround yourself with JUNE 2016 |

people who help fill in the gaps when it comes to parenting. The old adage “it takes a village” is so very true. Describe being a dad in three words. Unpredictable, rewarding and honorable. What is your family motto or saying? No family mottos or saying, but we do have a secret handshake. I’d teach it to you, but that would defeat the purpose of it being a secret. What values do you want to instill in your children? To be accountable, compassionate, understanding, dependable, dedicated and honorable. That it’s okay to make mistakes, and it’s okay to have failed attempts at things. I believe that we learn best from the mistakes that we have made.

SHAWN ECKERT

OCCUPATION: Management consultant; founder, Kids Activity Market CHILDREN: Emma (13)

What do you do during the day? As an entrepreneur and consultant, I work on a variety of projects every day ranging from strategic planning, leadership coaching and technology initiatives, and lately, a new nonprofit Kids Activity Market (KAM), which I launched earlier this year. Which philanthropic organizations are you involved in? Over the years I have played an active role in Shoebox Ministry, Habitat for Humanity and Junior Achievement. My current philanthropic passion is KAM, where we help match parents to activity providers, keeping kids busy outside of school. Can you tell us about KAM? KAM’s mission is to engage children in activities that build personal connections and human collaboration using nonelectronic mediums such as sports, crafts and leadership activities. We align families with activities that best fit their children’s extracurricular needs. Our nonprofit coordinates with activity providers to give scholarships to kids whose families otherwise could not afford these activities. How do you balance work, community involvement and being a dad? Family is the highest value in my life so I find myself constantly making choices based on what is most in alignment with my family. Although we are a small family of two, as a full-time single dad I have been fortunate to surround myself with others who also share my passion for parenting and understand that it does take a community to raise a happy, healthy, successful daughter.

What is one of your fondest memories with your child? One of my fondest memories is the summer after Emma’s fourth grade school year when we went to New York City for almost six weeks with my mother. The three of us had the opportunity to explore museums, walk the city, take trains to the Jersey Shore, Washington D.C. and many other historical stops. The memories and education were great for us all. What is the most rewarding part about being a dad? The most rewarding part about being a dad is that I am her real-life superhero. She looks up to me and relies on me and my wisdom, insight and experience to keep her safe and secure, happy and healthy, laughing and learning. Every day I have the opportunity SO SCOTTSDALE! |

to listen and learn from her as it is her innocence and quest for knowledge and understanding that teaches me. What advice do you have for future fathers? Don’t miss a single day. Take this opportunity to make a difference in their lives. Being a father is easy, however making a difference takes time, dedication and the willingness to be vulnerable. I have made a lot of mistakes over the last 14 years, but I keep showing up, day after day, and it does work out exactly like it is supposed to. What has fatherhood taught you? More than anything, fatherhood has taught me to listen first and think before I speak. Describe being a dad in three words. Love, love and more love.

JONATHAN LANE OCCUPATION: Owner and director of hoppiness, O.H.S.O. Eatery + Brewery + Distillery CHILDREN: Owen Henry (10)

What do you do during the day? Depending on the day, I am running a restaurant, delivering beer or spirits, or doing paperwork. You name it, I’ve probably done it at one time or another, whether it is building, developing, maintaining or operating a restaurant, brewery or distillery. How did you choose your career? It chose me. I was raised for a period by a single mom and spent a lot of time at a local pub after school doing homework, eating, cleaning, etc. I also love people and I am social, so it was better than any of the desk jobs I ever had. What is your favorite part about your career? The community and people I meet and become involved with. Which philanthropic organizations are you involved in? We work a lot with rescues and pet organizations, which are helping bring a wonderful animal to a healthy state and hopefully bringing a family, a child or an individual a comforting friend that helps them through life. We also help out the local middle school, and these were the years that I feel helped shape my full understanding of community. How do you balance work, community involvement and being a dad? It hasn’t been easy; my son slept at O.H.S.O. a lot as a little one. He ate there, he did his homework there – he practically lived there during our first 1 1/2 years of business. We work hard and we play hard. We have missed many things over the years, but I’ve only missed one of his baseball games ever; it’s his

favorite sport. I also try to create quality time no matter what we are doing, whether it is driving to school, playing a board game or taking the dogs for a walk. What are your favorite activities to do with your child? We love going to Arizona Diamondbacks games or playing a board game. We get to talk, and he tells me about his day or things that went on or the new friend he met, and so on. What is the most challenging part about being a dad? Every day the challenge changes, and it’s important to understand that your child is looking up to you and will slowly become you in a different way, so it’s about helping him become the best little you that you can. What is the most rewarding part about being a dad? Watching him JUNE 2016 |

become his own little man. What advice do you have for future fathers? Be patient, enjoy the little things and be thankful for all those that help shape him or her. What has fatherhood taught you? That it takes more than just me to raise a good little guy. Thank you to all the teachers, women and men who have and are helping my child grow. Describe being a dad in three words. Fun, fun, fun. What is your family motto or saying? Edgar A. Guest’s poem, “It Couldn’t Be Done.” What values do you want to instill in your child? To be involved in his community, to be happy and to enjoy every moment on this planet.

BRIAN BOOKER

OCCUPATION: Partner, Gordon & Rees CHILDREN: Triplets Danielle, Miles and August (8 months)

What do you do during the day? My days currently consist of copious amounts of baby formula, spit up and poopy diapers. Our house looks like a scene from “Raising Arizona.” In our abundant spare time, my wife Molly and I try to practice a little law. How did you choose your career? I took a class in college called “Intro to American Law.” During the first lecture on the first day of class, the professor held up the front page of the local newspaper (for the youngsters out there, a “newspaper” is how we used to keep up with what’s happening in the world) and pointed out that every story featured there was either directly, or one-step indirectly, related to the law. I was fascinated by that concept, and I decided right then that law school was my next step. Which philanthropic organizations are you involved in? I am in the Thunderbirds and I sit on the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation Board. In both capacities, I have participated in giving out the money that we have raised to numerous deserving, hardworking organizations that are making tremendous contributions to all segments of our community. I am humbled to have that opportunity. How do you balance work, community involvement and being a dad? I don’t have it balanced yet, but I’m working on it! How has it been thus far being a new dad – and to triplets? It has been the most incredible experience of my life. Watching my wife transform into a

maternal super-heroine and watching the babies’ personalities start to develop has been absolutely amazing. What did you do to prepare for fatherhood? I think I subconsciously watched my own late father and father-inlaw, as well as the many other wonderful fathers that I am blessed to know among my family and friends, and I’ve tried to emulate them. If I can be half the dad that they have been, I will be in good shape. What is one of your fondest memories you have so far with your children? The delivery room, without question. With three babies on the way, it felt like there were 100 people in there! What is the most challenging part about being a dad? Worrying about being good enough to not mess them up! SO SCOTTSDALE! |

What is the most rewarding part about being a dad? Watching them grow and thrive. What has fatherhood taught you? That my wife is a super human. Describe being a dad in three words. Love, love and love. What is your family motto or saying? Invictus (that’s for you, Chief!). What values do you want to instill in your children? I want them to be considerate of other people’s circumstances, I want them to engage in all aspects of their community, even when it’s not comfortable, and I want them to be fearless in going after their goals. Do you have any traditions you are passing on to your children? Love, faith and family.

CHARLIE HUERO

OCCUPATION: Assistant program director/ afternoon on-air personality, 94.5 KOOL-FM CHILDREN: Sofia (12) and Mia (17)

What do you do during the day? I get to play radio! I am on the air from 3-7 p.m. on 94.5 KOOL-FM. Before my shift, I am also the assistant program director, so I help with a lot of day-to-day items like copywriting and assisting the promotions department with generating ideas for the station that may grow ratings or revenue. How did you choose your career? There were two things that I had an incredible passion for as a kid: sports and music. I went to the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse to be a physical education teacher, and that turned into mass communications and radio. What is your favorite part about your career? There are many things, such as being able to walk into the studio each day and play music – much less the music I love and grew up listening to! Also, venturing out in the public and meeting our listeners and talking with them is amazing. There is a certain sense of completion when I get to shake hands with the listeners. I also love the community work we do as a station. Which philanthropic organizations are you involved in? I am getting involved in the Special Olympics Arizona. This charity is particularly special to me as my sister is handicapped. I have also worked with the Foundation for Blind Children and the Purple Society, which is a local organization for pediatric cancer. How do you balance work, community involvement and being a dad? Work is not a Monday to Friday, 9-5 job. I work six days a week, sometimes seven,

and the hours are long. I love my job. From being on the air to participating in various charity events or hosting fundraisers with the support of my family is priceless. I try to instill my daughters with the value of hard work and giving back to others. They have never questioned a fundraiser or why they are involved. They know how important it is to give back and I am very lucky to have kids with such giving spirits. What is the most challenging part about being a dad? I am the only male in the house. My biggest challenge is not being shut out because it is conversation for the “ladies” of the house. So, maybe staying relevant is a challenge. What is the most rewarding part about being a dad? Watching my children grow up. Seeing how smart JUNE 2016 |

and beautiful they are and how they are going to give back in the things they do. My wife has been a major part of that. We have been a great team. It’s been tough at times, but we are blessed to have such wonderful children. What has fatherhood taught you? Patience. Humility. Pride. Drive. Describe being a dad in three words. Role model (wait, is that two words already?), love and awesome! Do you have any traditions you are passing on to your children? Besides an annual trip to Disneyland, we participate in Pat’s Run every year. I believe having balance is key. We’re blessed to be able to take amazing trips, but we’re equally as blessed to be able to give back.

ith more than 70 major hotels and resorts in the greater Scottsdale area, many of them boasting award-winning restaurants, bars and lounges that cater to the chic neighborhood clientele just as often as they do to overnight guests, how does one set itself apart? “By giving our guests an experience – or series of experiences – that they can’t get anywhere else,” says Andrew McLaughlin, general manager of Bourbon Steak at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. “But if you would have told us 10 years

As an early adopter of the custom barrel concept, Proof first partnered with Buffalo Trace two years ago on a private bottling of their bourbon. “After a couple years with Buffalo Trace, we wanted to offer our return guests and locals a little change in taste. Enter a custom barrel of Russell’s Reserve Bourbon,” says Shaun Adams, the resort’s sommelier. “This bourbon offers more spice and less caramel than the Buffalo Trace, while still being smooth and oaky.” www.fourseasons.com/scottsdale. ago that we would find an experience like that at the bottom of a barrel, we might have thought you were nuts.” Alas, that sentiment rings true. Today, several of the Valley’s hottest resorts are sending their teams on cross-country adventures seeking high-end spirits, often aged in barrels like wine, to bring back for their exclusive use. Here’s a look at three resorts leading the trend.

Bourbon Steak at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess “When we heard that Tom Bulleit, who famously resurrected his great, great, great grandfather’s recipes in 1987, might be open to working on an exclusive barrel partnership, our resort beverage manager Matt Doerr and I immediately flew to Louisville, Kentucky, home of Bulleit’s Stitzel-Weller Distillery,” McLaughlin says. Their mission: Become the first venue in the country to have a private bottling of the Bulleit 10-Year Bourbon. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Westin Kierland Resort & Spa “There is only one place to get Tequila – Mexico,” says Matt Allen, beverage specialist at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. “So across the border we went to Jalisco, where they make Casa Herradura, the only all-natural tequila in the world.” Distilled not once, but twice, to preserve only the best of the alcohol, the tequila is aged, much like the bourbon, in new oak barrels for taste, color and smoothness. In 2015, Allen’s team selected its own barrel of Casa Herradura Double Barrel Reposado once it was tasted, approved and authenticated by the master distiller. “We can’t decide how guests prefer it – in one of our craft cocktails, our margaritas or on its own with a lime,” Allen says. “It’s going too fast. We are due for another trip down south soon!” www.kierlandresort.com.

urviving summertime in Scottsdale just got a lot easier thanks to three oneof-a-kind events taking place throughout June in Arizona’s high country.

Illuminate Film Festival, June 1-5 If you’re interested in a festival that speaks to your mind, body and soul, then the Illuminate Film festival is your ticket to cinematic enlightenment. This four-day fest two hours north in Sedona focuses on “conscious cinema.” It features a variety of films and workshops that enlighten the public on health, healing, spirituality, nature, meditation and creative expression, seeking to showcase films that empower others to live kinder, wiser, more enlightened lives. Audiences are able to become fully engaged in the films, as many of the movies are followed by a Q&A panel with the filmmakers,

performers and directors. Not only will you leave refreshed from the cooler temps, but also from the films themselves. www.illuminatefilmfestival.com.

Tilted Earth Festival, June 16-18 The Tilted Earth Festival is heading into its third year in Cottonwood, about two hours north of Scottsdale, where it will unite music lovers, foodies and outdoor enthusiasts in one place. With 13 northern Arizona wineries, two craft breweries and food trucks galore, this event won’t let your taste buds down! Art lovers can view artwork and merchandise from local artists and listen to live music,

Located at an altitude of 7,000 feet, the Flagstaff Blues & Brews festival is, quite literally, a cool festival just 2 ½ hours from Scottsdale. The event celebrates soulful blues music and tasty brews, all while supporting youth arts programs throughout northern Arizona. Four years ago, this event was founded by a mother-anddaughter team who wanted to showcase rhythm and blues while giving back to the community, so they partnered with Restore Arts, a Phoenix-based nonprofit that strives to keep the arts alive in public schools. Tune into musicians ranging from local bands to artists from the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame and National Blues Hall of Fame, as well as Grammy Awardwinning artists and Blues Music Awardwinning artists. And, of course, festivalgoers can sip suds from local breweries that pair perfectly with the selection of food vendors. www.flagstaffblues.com.

FRED TIEKEN Young at heart and coloring the art world BY NICOLE ROYSE

F

red Tieken is an accomplished artist whose work is expressionistic in style, highlighting personal subjects and experiences through irony and wit. Taking cues from street art, Tieken’s work creates an explosion of color using subjects subtly abstracted and brought to life with a bold color palette and heavy outlining of figures and words. When asked about his work Tieken states that “painting is like baring his soul

to the world.” This level of emotional commitment comes across vividly in his work. Reminiscent of Basquiat, his paintings are mesmerizing, offering striking imagery filled with great emotion and an intimacy that’s truly refreshing and genuine. “I create colorful paintings that are often peppered with shrewd observations, wry social commentary and smart symbolism,” Tieken says. Tieken began his career as a musician, and then transitioned into a successful graphic design career, ultimately turning to painting after retirement. Painting has been liberating for Tieken, allowing him the freedom to paint whatever he wants, which is a departure from the constraints of his prior graphic design career. cuisine Old Town Scottsdale’s Counter Intuitive is known for its rotating theme and menu that garner inspiration from a person, place or era (think Havana nights or Bourbon Street). We chatted with Garrison Whiting, executive chef and recent Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame “Best Upcoming Chef” nominee, and got the dish on the latest theme. DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WANTED TO BECOME A CHEF? Pretty much. When I was four years old, my mom opened Kitchen Classics, which was located on 44th Street and Thomas Road until 2009. It focused on kitchenware, but it also regularly welcomed local and touring chefs for cooking classes and workshops. In between sweeping floors and stocking shelves, I learned from some of the best in the business. By 19, I had more than a decade of experience. EXPLAIN THE CONCEPT BEHIND COUNTER INTUITIVE. Last year, our team at Cowboy Ciao, where I’ve worked as a chef for six years, had the opportunity to adapt the space next door. Rather than focus on food with wine as we did at Cowboy Ciao and Kazimierz World Wine Bar, we decided to focus on food with cocktails – and kitsch. The theme of Counter Intuitive changes every few months, as does the menu. We launched with a New Orleans Estate Sale theme in 2015, complete with a backstory of a fictitious Southern gentleman who passed away. The cocktail and food menus, as you can imagine, followed the theme and focused on Southern specialties.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Garrison Whiting of Counter Intuitive BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

TELL US ABOUT THE CURRENT THEME. The theme is Agua Caliente Racetrack: Opening Day 1929, which opened in the border town of Tijuana in 1929 and cost $2.5 million. Being on the border, yet offering such a high-end attraction as horseracing, the venue had an interesting mix of wealthy Americans coming to gamble and resident Mexicans who operated the space. Our menu reflects that – a mix of dishes that would be served to the American gamblers as well as Mexican comfort foods. WHAT ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS ON THE CURRENT MENU? Shrimp was in high demand then, so we created a play on shrimp cocktail to appease our fictitious wealthy American clientele. We plate it in antique goblets and offer a side of tequila, which guests can pour into their goblet, creating the best Blood Maria ever. In honor of our fictitious Mexican patrons and workers, we have a breakfast burrito. While it doesn’t sound fancy, we make our own in-house chorizo, and it uses my secret mole recipe. RESORT & SPA

rom Wyatt Earp to Billy the Kid, the Old West is littered with colorful male characters. But one notable female is Nellie Cashman. “Nicknamed the ‘The Angel of the Mining Camp,’ Nellie was a nurse, boarding house owner and even restaurateur in Arizona in the 1880s,” says Matt Allen, beverage specialist at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. “Nellie Cashman’s pays homage to her and Arizona’s Old West.” The food is an elevated version of Old West favorites, including an impressive selection of prime cuts of beef from select ranches across Arizona. “For the cocktail menu, we took actual recipes popular in the late 1800s and reinterpreted them for a 21st-century audience,” Allen says. “Enter the Claret Snap.” According to Allen, whiskey- and bourbon-based cocktails really took hold of the American palate in the 1880s, thanks to the whiskey sour. The Claret Snap ($12) is a variation of this cocktail using a surprisingly popular ingredient from the Old West – red wine! “Claret is actually a blanket term used in the Old West for any type of red wine,” Allen says. “A float of red wine was often used to make whiskey sours, ironically, a little less sour.” Allen’s Claret Snap stays mostly true to the original recipe, which uses a whiskey, fresh lemon, homemade simple syrup and a red wine float on top. He does, however, substitute the generic whiskey with Copper City Bourbon from AZ Distilling Company to give it a little more Arizona flavor, quite literally. Nellie Cashman’s, 6902 E. This is the place for those who feel like kicking back with a good book or letting the gentle flow from the pool’s waterfall lure to you sleep. Over at the aptly named Picante pool, things heat up indeed. This livelier lagoon features a Top 40 radio station broadcast on select Saturdays from 12 to 6 p.m. ($25 for non-hotel guests), while on other select Saturdays, DJ Sean Derek gets the poolside party going with fun music (free to non-hotel guests). Throughout both pool areas there are more than 70 lounge chairs and a total of eight daybeds, both available on a firstcome, first-served basis. Four cabanas are available to rent at the Picante pool.

Fixings include blue cheese-stuffed olives, garlic-stuffed Kalamata olives, pepperoncini, bacon and Tapatio hot sauce for a spicy kick. A 16-ounce glass is $15.

Fun Facts The resort has some pretty interesting tidbits regarding behind-the-scenes operations. Boost your know-how here: Gluten-free? No problem! The horticulture team harvests mesquite pods from the property’s mesquite trees and they’re ground into gluten-free mesquite flour to use in dishes such as the pancakes at Stonegrill. The resort harvests its own bees, which produce honey that is utilized throughout the restaurants in various recipes. There’s always a queen bee, right? Well, the resort has three: Honey Bee Bee, Beeyonce and Beeatrice. A 21,000-square-foot organic Chef’s Garden features approximately 10 varieties of vegetables per season and 10 different types of herbs – all used in the restaurant and banquet kitchens. You can even tour this popular garden and sample what’s currently growing while learning something, too! Revive Spa has a signature line of products that utilizes herbs from the Chef’s Garden, including lavender, rosemary, sweet marjoram, mint, sage, thyme and hyssop. Once the herbs are grown and picked, they are sent to Sedona where Body Bliss creates the spa’s products. Try the healing Turquoise Blue Sage Body Ritual ($235).

UPPER EYE LID SURGERY

Also referred to as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery truly transforms an aging look to an instead much more rested and youthful appearance. The eye area is one of the first areas to show the signs of aging and because of the excess eyelid skin, we tend to look tired, angry or sad. Since the eye area is so central to our facial expressions, surgery to rejuvenate the eyelids can have a tremendous impact on the overall appearance of the face. The down time from surgery is limited with minimal discomfort.

Being a blue eyed blond I was worried that my eyebrows would look overdone but Rachell has been custom blending her own colors for each person for over twenty years so I trusted her to get the right shade and shape. I love the arch she gave me! It was like getting an instant lift! I get so many compliments on how my eyeliner enhances my lash line and makes my blue eyes just pop! But it still looks super natural! —Tina Clemmons President/Owner De Novo Scan, Clinical Thermography

I am a breast cancer survivor and my Doctor trusts her patients to Rachell for the final phase of Breasthetics (3-d nipple tattoo and areola restoration) after breast cancer. My tatas are gorgeous thanks to Rachell! After that I totally trusted her to do my eyeliner, which I loved, so then I even did my Eyebrows and Lips! —Ellen Elson Realtor/Luxury Private Listings

I was most impressed with Rachell’s conservative approach to permanent makeup, she really stresses you can always add more and that made me comfortable. She is such a color genius and so experienced. I love that now I can just get up and go. —Dawn Billings Heartlink Founder, Creator of Primary Colors Personality Test

For over 20 years Rachell Hall has eased the makeup woes of an international clientele with her exclusive perfected signature procedures. Be beautiful at breakfast and still look fresh at four! Work out or go out your permanent make up will be perfect! Save time with any procedure. Always natural, always pretty, always perfect. Don't you deserve wash and wear beauty? • Powder soft eyebrows create the illusion of fullness, frame your eyes with the perfect arch, and of course save all that time in the morning! • Smokey eyeliner, never smears, enhances your lash line and eliminates daily tugging at delicate eye tissue • Custom contoured lips- naturally full and blushed lips with contour and colors blended just for you! • Restores lip fullness without the "duck lip effect" and eliminates lipstick bleeding into fine lines • Breasthetics, 3-d nipple areola restoration post mastectomy

t’s a military vehicle in most of the world, used by the United States Marine Corps. In the civilian market, it’s hugely popular with professional athletes, cardiothoracic surgeons (oddly) and bad guys in action movies – a vehicle known for its luxury feel and rugged appeal. Does it really have its own star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame? The G-Class, otherwise known as the Geländewagen (German for “off-road vehicle”), has been built in Graz, Austria, largely unchanged since 1979. Each handmade G-Wagen takes 10 days to build and only 54 are produced each day. The entry-level G550 starts at $119,900 and the AMG G65 trim cashes out at an incredible $217,900, landing in Bentley territory. While only a few

thousand are sold in the U.S. each year, even at those prices, they fly out of dealerships, with a waiting list to get one. I recently spent time behind the wheel of three G-Wagen models in and around Moab, Utah. Even with the tarted up, demilitarized version, the military ergonomics are thinly disguised: a huge step up into the cabin, comfortable but erect seating position, and minimal legroom both front and back. Each iteration was finished in exquisite red Nappa diamond quilted designo leather, anthracite poplar wood and carbon fiber, and equipped with all the latest technology. The base G-Wagen is powered by a new, twin-turbocharged, 416-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-8 engine, matched to a sevenspeed automatic transmission. Power was more than adequate with sweet melodic exhaust notes. I spent most of my time in the 621-horsepower, 6.0-liter, bi-turbo V-12 model that included dual chrome-tipped side pipes, outrageous 21-inch twin fivespoke alloy wheels, matte-finish silver paint and a chrome-polished brush bar up front. But colossal horsepower and huge tires do nothing for the G’s primitive driving and handling dynamics. The steering response is imprecise, causing the vehicle to wander almost aimlessly on the highway. The brakes are disappointing, the vehicle’s high center of gravity contributes to excessive body roll, and there is little in the way of confident handling. If those deficiencies aren’t enough of a buzzkill, the G65, even with its massive horsepower, was not fast. I felt little performance difference between it and the V-8, and actually preferred the sound of the smaller engine. Still, none of these issues, the mpg rating, nor the price will deter celebrities and the like from lining up to get one. Why? Because it just screams style and status. And, of course, one has a reputation to uphold. Automotive writer Jim Prueter is a spokesperson for AAA. You can catch him on several local TV stations and can reach him at jmprueter@yahoo.com.

ilwaukee and nearby Kenosha offer great escapes from the Arizona heat during the summer months with abundant food finds, festivals galore, world-class museums and true Americana – all about a 3 1/2 hour flight from Phoenix.

Milwaukee’s Historic Downtown Milwaukee is a metropolitan city on the western shore of Lake Michigan. One of the best ways to explore is with a stroll along the two-mile long RiverWalk. This 20-block area along the Milwaukee River connects downtown with the Historic Third Ward, the city’s arts and fashion district. As you wander, you can peruse a variety of public art in the RiverSculpture! outdoor art gallery. There are 20 art sculptures on display, including the Bronze Fonz (a la “Happy Days”) on the southeast corner of Wells Street and the RiverWalk.

Luxury Stay at The Pfister Hotel A visit to Milwaukee is only complete with a stay at the iconic AAA Four Diamond Pfister Hotel, which houses the largest collection of Victorian paintings of any hotel in the world. At the Pfister, you can feel the 19thcentury elegance of the hotel, which was built in 1893, but enjoy modern amenities. Be sure to head up to Blu on the hotel’s 23rd floor, where you can savor a classic cocktail as you watch the sun set over the city’s skyline.

Historic Third Ward Just south of downtown is the Historic Third Ward, a six square block area filled with art galleries, theaters, boutiques and specialty stores. The area’s remodeled warehouses showcase 19th-century Americana. Be sure to visit the Milwaukee Public Market – this hub of activity is reminiscent of the great European food markets. You’ll find local Wisconsin products, including cheeses, creams and candies. For other eats and drinks, sample more than 30 craft beers on tap at Cafe Benelux & Market; pick up cheese from local dairies at West Allis Cheese &

The Milwaukee Art Museum houses more than 30,000 works of art. The museum’s Quadracci Pavilion, which opened in 2001, features signature wings that form a moveable sunscreen with a 217-foot wingspan. The Harley-Davidson Museum is an iconic Milwaukee attraction, and even those who might not be “hog” fans will find it intriguing. The collection illustrates the American story, with displays on the role Harley-Davidson has played in everything from war and politics to movies and music.

Kenosha sits less than an hour south of Milwaukee. A highlight each July is Taste of Wisconsin (July 29-31 this year). Pedego Electric Bikes’ newest model adds luxury to adventure

W

hether you’re a biking pro or novice, an electric bike is a fun and easy way to explore. Plus, as Valley temps heat up and northern Arizona’s mountains beckon, it’s the perfect accessory to a road trip. Old Town Scottsdale’s Pedego Electric Bikes offers a variety of twowheeled toys. Their newest model, the Trail Tracker IV, is Pedego’s answer to creating a stylish, fat-tire bike designed to weather all of Arizona’s terrain, including sand in the desert, gravel along bike paths and even snow up north during the winter. Priced upwards of $3,000, the Trail Tracker IV Pedego Electric Bike is perfect for those looking for a more luxurious approach to adventure. The Trail Tracker IV has four-inch fat tires to help riders easily navigate uneven ground, resulting in a smooth ride. As with all Pedego e-bikes, this model has the same functionalities of a traditional bicycle; riders can simply choose to “pedal or not” by using the batterycharged PedalSense Technology or

throttle functions. PedalSense Technology responds to the rider’s pedaling and delivers proportional assistance based on how hard the rider pedals, while the throttle is twist-and-go. These tools propel the bike up to 20 mph and allow for a faster ride and longer workout. The Trail Tracker IV features a new JUNE 2016 |

frame with an integrated, 48-volt, 11-amp hour battery that can be charged on or off the bike, allowing for a more controlled and relaxed ride. This bike’s state-of-theart geared motor provides 500 watts of acceleration and hill-climbing strength for full control. The Trail Tracker IV also has top-of-the-line SRAM disc brakes for maximum stopping power. The bike is available in matte black with black, red, lime green or blue rims. Pedego offers scheduled maintenance for one year after purchase and can ship all models anywhere in the United States. So, regardless of where your father – or anyone, for that matter – lives, you can give the ultimate gift in electric biking. And speaking of fathers, Pedego is offering a Father’s Day special Sunday, June 19. All dads get one free rental hour on a Pedego Comfort Cruiser model. Happy trails! Stacey and Joe are in the middle of a custody battle and Stacey has evidence that Joe abuses drugs/alochol…

Yvette says:

Stacey may have grounds to file an emergency petition for temporary legal decision making and supervised parenting time. Stacey can request a hair follicle test and weekly random drug and alcohol testing with a court approved facility for a period of time.

Child support

Julie and Richard divorced a year ago and Richard just lost his job and stopped paying child support…

Jennifer says:

If Richard wilfully fails to pay child support when he has the ability to pay, the court can find him in contempt and issue an arrest warrant. A child support order is effective until a party requests a modification of the amount from the court. To modify child support, the loss of a job must be found to be substantial and continuing. When possible, Yvette and Jennifer encourage amicable resolution of family issues through mediation. Otherwise, Yvette and Jennifer are ready to fight for your rights in court. Rubin & Ansel. HONEY DO Put Crown Royal’s newest limited-edition flavor on your list BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

O

ver the past several years, Crown Royal Blended Canadian Whisky has taken great pride in developing new and innovative flavor profiles for the marketplace. Most recently, these include: Crown XO, Crown Monarch 75th Anniversary Blend, Crown Maple, Crown Regal Apple and Crown Northern Harvest Rye. In fact, “Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2016” just crowned the Harvest Rye as the “World Whisky of the Year for 2016.” On the heels of these successes, the award-winning whisky formally launched a new, limited-edition offering in May: Crown Royal Honey. “Crown Royal Honey, which is only available through the summer months for now, is an extraordinary blend of 50 of the finest whiskies, each of which has been hand-selected by the Crown master blender, and combined with the sweet taste of honey,” says Diageo Master of Whisky Tom Turner. “The result is a vibrantly delicious combination with a

“As is with all their whiskies, every drop of Crown Royal Honey is developed in the small town of Gimli in Manitoba, Canada from resilient natural ingredients. After all, negative 30-degree weather can be the norm here for weeks on end, and temperature swings 50 or more degrees overnight can be commonplace certain times of the year,” Turner says. “The hearty ingredients are carefully combined with very smooth water, which is naturally filtered through the limestone beneath Lake Winnipeg, and then matured in barrels over a series of years. The result is America’s top-selling whisky.” Currently available at Fry’s Food & Drug Stores, Total Wine & More, Walmart, CVS and BevMo!, Turner recommends sampling Crown Royal Honey on the rocks and also experimenting with it in several traditional drinks and classic summer cocktails at home or by the pool.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ | PHOTO COURTESY OF TANZY RESTAURANT

Inspired by the decadence of Las Vegas resorts blended with local flair, the wow factor at Tanzy Restaurant is undeniable. As a result, developing a menu to match its first impression is a tall order, but it’s one Chef Scott Anderson welcomes. Case in point: His perfectly marbled, 16-ounce rib-eye ($39). Cooked on a mesquite-burning grill and served with a made-from-scratch bearnaise sauce, crispy fingerling potatoes and sauteed broccolini, it’s a meal crafted for a king – something that is quite fitting, given the entry to the restaurant is an actual two-story castle door. 15257 N. ou know what they say – the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So, in honor of Father’s Day and the men in our lives, we scoured Scottsdale for some of the best in “dude food.” In other words, food that’s flavorful, rich, filling and oh-socomforting. Men, your meals await!

BEVVY There aren’t many meat eaters who don’t enjoy a good burger, and a burger topped with bacon is even better. But, what if you mixed said bacon in with the ground beef? This is exactly what Bevvy does with their 60/40 Burger and it is glorious. They create a patty comprised of 60 percent Angus beef and 40 percent Applewood smoked bacon piled high with cheddar cheese, more bacon (yes, more!), avocado, fried onion strings and a creamy chipotle aioli. Opt to add a fried egg to your burger for a satisfying indulgence. You’ll find this burger has so much layer and depth with the two bacon components. Carnivorous eaters will be quite content! 4420 N. Saddlebag Trail, Scottsdale; 480.525.9300; www.bevvyaz.com.

BOOTLEGGERS MODERN AMERICAN SMOKEHOUSE

Bootleggers is all about the meat! From their beefy sandwiches to their generous portions of smoked meat entrees, you’ll discover an infusion of rich flavors lightly laced with an unmistakable smoky flavor whether you opt for smoked prime rib, pulled pork or their highly popular brisket. But, alas, the bacon here is also a standout with the Bacon Board. This starter sets you up with five different types of exceptional bacon alongside sweet onion jam, red pepper jam, whole grain mustard and gherkins (otherwise known as pickles). Each variety of bacon is varied in texture and flavor, resulting in any bacon lover’s dream! 7217 E. 1st St., Scottsdale; 480.404.9984; www.bootleggersaz.com.

DEFALCO’S ITALIAN DELI & GROCERY Almost nothing beats a hearty Italian sandwich, and when it comes to sandwiches at DeFalco’s, the Italian Sausage with Peppers & Onions reigns culinary king. Served on your choice of seven kinds of bread (such as focaccia or a crispy baguette), this hefty sandwich features Italian sausage topped with a mountain of peppers and onions along with homemade tomato sauce. The sauce, which has been in the DeFalco family for years, is made with love and some serious depth of flavor. The Italian sausage is also homemade; they have been making it based off of family recipes dating back almost 100 years. So dig in and get a little messy – it’s going to be worth it! 2334 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.990.8660; www.defalcosdeli.com.

FATE BREWING COMPANY Is there a better example of dude food than pizza and beer? Get the best of both worlds at Fate Brewing Company. Their small-batch brews and wood-fired pies go perfectly together, and one of the best bets for a unique pizza here is the Still Jalapeno Biznaz. The pizza is layered with olive oil, tomato sauce, mozzarella, bacon, fresh jalapeno and a cracked egg. Keeping the jalapeno fresh instead of sauteed adds a crisp texture to each baconfilled bite, while the delicate yolk softens the heat just slightly. Add in a flight of brews and you’re well on your way to a memorable, manly meal. 7337 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale; 480.994.1275; www.fatebrewing.com.

ROARING FORK

Wood-fired cooking imparts a unique flavor to food and affords an experience reminiscent of a cookout – but with a bit more pizazz. Roaring Fork uses this method and you’ll find that their dishes all have a little something extra. Case in point,

the Roaring Fork “Big Ass” Burger is aptly named, as it’s huge in both size and flavor. The massive, meaty burger is topped with smoked pepper bacon and poblano pepper along with the standard accoutrements of cheddar cheese, onion, pickles, lettuce and tomato. The slight spice of the bacon along with the poblano pepper gives an extra kick to this updated traditional burger. 4800 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.947.0795; www.roaringfork.com.

TOMMY BAHAMA RESTAURANT & BAR Sliders are great pub fare, but what if you’re looking for a something a little different? Tommy Bahama focuses on island-inspired fare, and the kitchen’s creativity is evident with the Seared Scallop Sliders. This appetizer, which comes with a duo of sliders, begins with a chipotle aioli, an island slaw, basil and Roma tomatoes, all underneath a perfectly seared scallop. The scallops impart a slight sweetness to the otherwise savory sliders, while a side of crispy onions creates a great contrast in texture. 15205 N. Kierland Blvd., Scottsdale; 480.505.3668; www.tommybahama.com.

THIRSTY LION GASTROPUB & GRILL Bread, meat and cheese combos make most men happy. The trick is to get the perfect ratio of these three components to make a stellar sandwich. The Thirsty Lion makes an epic Roasted Pork Cubano that does just that. The rich flavors of the tender roasted pork shoulder are combined with smoked ham, Swiss cheese, bread and butter pickles, jalapenos and Dijon mustard, all placed on Parmesan-crusted ciabatta. The heat from the pulled pork slowly melts that tart Swiss cheese, and all of the other components create a symphony of flavors worthy of any sandwich aficionado. 7014 E. hen pressed to describe Social Tap American Eatery, which recently opened in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, its co-founder Steve McDonald has a pretty vivid answer. “Social Tap is the love child of AZ88 and the Vig – part laid-back neighborhood hangout, part consistently killer dining and drinking destination and part cool cocktail bar,” says McDonald, a 20-year veteran of the local food and beverage industry. “Basically, we tried to create a place where we’d enjoy hanging out.”

little extra space to eventually expand,” McDonald says. “This location checks all the boxes and then some.” Boasting a shaded, 2,000-squarefoot-patio with a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis misting system able to withstand the hottest of Arizona days, Social Tap is now open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. and on weekends from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m., with breakfast and brunch offerings. Happy hour is offered weekdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and features food, cocktails, beer and wine, all starting at $4.

As a Neighborhood Hangout

As a Dining and Drinking Destination

Though always planned for the Valley – and specifically the Old Town area – McDonald and his partners would open the first Social Tap in Ventura, California, in 2013 and a second location in San Diego in 2015 before being able to zero in on the right Scottsdale space earlier this year. “We wanted an expansive patio and big kitchen, indoor/outdoor bar and a

“Our kitchen put its twist on American and Mexican comfort foods by making everything from scratch each day and using only fresh ingredients,” McDonald says. Among the most popular menu items are: Filet Mignon Truffle Tacos ($11), two filet tacos topped with mushrooms, poblano cheese sauce, fried shallots and black SO SCOTTSDALE! |

truffle salt and served with chips and salsa; Cali-Mari ($12), fried calamari sauteed with chorizo, peppers and a sweet chili sauce and served with a Sriracha aioli; and a Free Range Chicken Burger ($13.75), chimichurri and white wine-marinated chicken breast with tomato, melted pepper jack cheese, smoked applewood bacon, jalapeno aioli and avocado. “We also partnered with Golden Road Brewing out of Los Angeles to help us develop our own signature Social Tap Blonde, IPA and stout beers, respectively, to accompany a wide variety of craft brews we offer from local and international breweries,” says McDonald, noting beer tasting flights are also available.

As a Cocktail Bar In addition to beers and ciders, as well as wine by the glass and bottle, Social Tap has also developed a signature cocktail menu featuring nine different margaritas, including both elderflower and pomegranate options, and three different versions of mules – a traditional Moscow Mule, a Maui Mule using pineapple flavors and even an Irish Mule with, of course, Irish whiskey. Insider tip: Ask the server for the frozen drink of the day, which changes regularly and is perfect for the long, hot summer ahead. Social Tap, 4312 N. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
