MEN’S HEALTH

Gino Tutera MD FACOG, SottoPelle Medical Director answers your questions.

Do men need hormone replacement therapy too?

Yes. It’s a common misconception that women are the only ones who need hormone replacement therapy as they age. Many men often believe that feeling constantly tired, having the inability to gain muscle mass as a part of aging can negatively impact your ability to perform at work, relationships with friends and in your body and life. Every man experiences a gradual decline in hormone production as he gets older, finds himself having less sexual desire, gaining weight, and losing muscle mass and feeling unmotivated, depressed and moody. Most men who don’t have hormone replacement therapy believe they have to live with these symptoms as part of normal aging. Nothing could be further from the truth! SottoPelle® hormone replacement therapy can help bring back vitality and quality of life.

Do you have a question for Dr. Tutera? Visit our website www.sottopelletherapy.com and contact us or submit all questions to response@sphrt.com It has been a bonus to notice a real increase in my sexual desire and interest. This hormone replacement therapy treatment has made a significant increase in the quality of my life. I am sure I will continue these hormone therapy treatments for the rest of my life.

Stanly P

SottoPelle has really changed my life. I have so much more physical energy and mental clarity and don’t even have a headache anymore. The difference in just a few months has been truly amazing and I feel so much better every day.

Joe DeLamielleure

I live an active lifestyle and I am amazed at the increase (in energy). I no longer need ‘afternoon naps.’ I wake up refreshed and ready to go. The biggest surprise has been the mental and emotional change first noticed by my wife after natural hormone replacement therapy in Scottsdale. I am up and positive. Small problems no longer knock me down and create depression. Anxieties seem to have disappeared.

elcome to our annual Man Issue! From stylish dads to men’s fashions to men’s spa treatments, we celebrate all things men this month. For our cover story (pg. 44), we spoke with Michael Bidwill, the president of the Arizona Cardinals—a perfect fit since not only is he a big part of our community (go Cardinals!) but his family has been, as well (and he still works alongside his dad!). Bidwill knows the importance of teamwork, and understands empowering others. As he says, “It’s not like you get a stadium and you flip a light switch and all of a sudden a team’s going to be successful. It’s about hiring the right coaches, making sure you have the right personnel department, the right general manager; and that’s all on the football side. Then you’ve got to make sure you sell out those seats, you do the right kind of signage deals, and you have a great place for the fans to come and have a complete fan experience that’s very welcoming and built with tradition. That’s the business side of the house. We’ve got to have a complete team to make it all work.” He leads by example, as do the other men we feature throughout this issue. And our stylish dads? Not only are they rockin’ the fashion world, but they all also lead by example, acting as great role models for their children (read their advice on pg. 48). There’s also men’s fashions, summertime events, and so much more (a $10,000 toilet, anyone?)!

s the CEO of Mobile Mini, Erik Olsson is at the helm of the mobile storage company that has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception in 1983. The company’s secure, portable storage solutions have served millions of customers across the United States, and with Olsson’s guidance, is positioned for stable and dynamic growth.

In the last few years, Mobile Mini has also made some acquisitions. “There are two strategies–one is to extend our current offerings by doing smaller acquisitions, buying smaller portable storage companies in an area where we are either nonexistent or where we think we want to have a stronger market position,” states Olsson. “We did about eight of those acquisitions last year and one so far this year. It’s easy for us to extend our footprint and roll these places into our structure.” Another strategy is in the acquisition of complementary businesses that help create a “second leg” for the company. Last year Mobile Mini acquired a specialty containment company that rents tanks and boxes for liquid storage. “Those assets are very similar to the regular storage assets that we have. They fit our infrastructure very well,” says Olsson. Since joining Mobile Mini, Olsson has also introduced a dividend program and a share buyback program as a way to focus more on the shareholders.

Prior to coming on board as CEO at Mobile Mini in 2013, Swedish-born Olsson was CEO at RSC Equipment Rental, headquartered in Scottsdale. Once with Mobile Mini, Olsson worked to streamline, create opportunities, and take the company to the next level. The transformation and growth of the company in two years has been tremendous, and Olsson has been happy with how the company and its staff have performed. “It’s been a public company for 20 years, but it’s been led by the founder or founder’s son during that whole time period. I was brought in as the first outsider with big company experience,” says Olsson. “The objective was to professionalize the company and accelerate growth and put in processes and drive efficiencies at Mobile Mini.” By Olsson’s own account, the company was already doing well when he joined it, but he saw where it could be improved.

Changing the Culture Mobile Mini’s system of five values was developed under the leadership of Olsson and includes safety first, integrity and transparency, empowerment of employees, driving results and continuous improvement, and being actively involved in the local community. Olsson believes that this set of values help to propel the company. “That was one of the first things I did here was to establish the vision, mission and values,” explains Olsson. “You need those in place in order to be able to develop a culture in a company. The culture when I first came here was more aspirational than actual. We’ve been working hard since then to live these values and I would say we are doing that now and that is one big part of our success. “When I first came here, I asked my direct reports that they, too, engage in at least one non-profit or charitable organization,” says Olsson.

Music and Motorcycles

Getting Involved in the Community As part of being heavily involved in the community, Olsson serves on the executive board of St. Mary’s Food Bank, the nation’s original food bank. Other Mobile Mini senior leadership team members are serving on the boards of Luke Fighter Country Partnership, Goodwill of Central Arizona, City of Phoenix Environmental Quality Commission, and Playworks. The company also recently launched the Mobile Mini Community Giving Program, where branch managers across North America are empowered to donate free, secure storage containers to non-profit organizations located in their respective market areas. In addition to his prowess as CEO at Mobile Mini, Scottsdale resident Olsson is a huge fan of music and motorcycles and is an avid rider. In fact, he recently donated a Harley Davidson motorcycle to the Scottsdale-based nonprofit Joe Foss Institute, which is dedicated to teaching civics and patriotism to students. “It’s a great organization,” notes Olsson. Unable to utilize a second Harley Davidson that he recently purchased due to his busy CEO schedule, he donated it—and the bike ultimately raised $17,000 for the organization. “Motorcycles are one hobby, and I love music, too,” states Olsson. “I’m stuck in the music I grew up with. I’ve seen Bruce Springsteen 25 or 30 times. Two weeks ago I bought tickets to the Rolling Stones tour here this summer and I’m going to see U2 later this month. It’s a lot of fun.”

irst he focused on how to make people feel better through his company Massage Envy, and then The Joint chiropractic facilities. Now, John Leonesio is getting ready to make us look better, too. “Amazing Lash Studio is taking the beauty industry by storm for its ability to provide time and resource-constrained women with beautiful, long-lasting, naturallooking eyelashes in approximately one hour,” says entrepreneur Leonesio, the newly named CEO of Amazing Lash Studio (www.amazinglashstudio.com). “The eyelash extensions are longer, fuller and darker than natural lashes could ever be, and compete against the most popular and best-selling mascaras on the market.” Amazing Lash Studio’s extensions are semi-permanent, and made from synthetic fibers designed to replicate the curve and size of natural lashes. Each lash is applied individually, via a patent-pending application process, to the clients’ own natural lashes. Using the same business-building techniques that have worked for his previous ventures, Leonesio is hoping to conquer this corner of the beauty market. “Amazing Lash Studio is dedicated to raising the bar on perfection, lasting beauty, and professionalism,” he says. “And for franchise owners and their clients, that makes all the difference in the world!” The first location will open this month at Frank Lloyd Wright and Thompson Peak Parkway, followed by one at Tatum and Shea in July.

Etc.

How do you decide what businesses to become involved with? I stay in my comfort zone of service-based, membershipbased business opportunities. Why are lashes the big new beauty craze? They are convenient for the consumer, making them perfect for the active lifestyle. If you could get a celebrity spokesperson for Amazing Lash Studio, who would it be? Eva Longoria. What was it about lashes that drew you in? The belief that the beauty industry is highly profitable, and again, it is a service-based business that we could add a membership model to. ust call me Old Man Pedersen,” says Erik Pedersen. And while he is just 35, Pedersen takes great pride in serving as the “old man” of AXA Advisors Southwest, where he was recently named senior vice president. “Roughly 10,000 Baby Boomers will turn 65 today, and about 10,000 more will cross that threshold every day for the next 19 years. The amount of money that will move from accumulating to distribution as folks retire will be unprecedented,” says Pedersen. “The need for professional advisors has never been greater.” With less than five percent of financial advisors in the country under age 30, and nearly 50 percent of advisors over 55, many are thinking about retirement, themselves. As such, Pedersen—who was just named among the Top 10 AXA Advisors in the nation—is focused on three main areas to help develop young talent. First, he co-founded GET Phoenix, a non-profit networking group that provides professional development opportunities to career-oriented young professionals throughout Maricopa County. Second, he and AXA Advisors are investing in a comprehensive program to help team members who are newer to the industry find success. And third, his team is cultivating an advisorcentric, youth-empowering culture. “We are actively bringing in recent and new college grads into our office every day,” says Pedersen. “So if that means anyone approaching 40 in our office is old, I will take it!”

Etc.

Tell us more about GET Phoenix... We seek to provide quality networking and development opportunities to young professionals 24 to 39 in fields including finance, law, insurance, real estate, accounting, and more. Give us an example of a unique teambuilding program you’ve done at AXA. This summer, we are hitting the road and taking the team to San Diego. The only possible topper—the company cruise! CHRIS MORGAN

The star behind the words BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

C

hris Morgan always wanted to be a screenwriter. He initially didn’t go after his dream because he was afraid he wouldn’t succeed—but all that changed three years ago. The Chicago native sat down one day and started writing. After receiving positive feedback, he decided it was finally time to go for it. Morgan now spends his days writing scripts, networking, meeting with management teams, and is working on producing a television show for a cable network. Although his career is behind the camera lens, Morgan is always sure to be polished when he walks out of the house. He describes his style as business casual with a sexy, urban edge. You can typically find him wearing nice jeans and a pressed shirt. He has a vast shoe collection with more than 100 pairs, and owns a hat to match every outfit. Some of his favorite brands are Ralph Lauren, Nike and Banana Republic, and he always shows support for his favorite sports teams with his hats. In his free time, Morgan enjoys working out, smoking cigars, and, of course, loves watching movies. What is one of your favorite pairs of shoes? Nike Air Force 1’s are my favorite shoes. I have a pair of $2,000 anaconda skin/Italian leather, handmade in Italy. Where do you enjoy smoking cigars? I enjoy having a cigar at 21 Degrees and Ambassador Cigars. What are your favorite sports teams? My favorite sports teams are the Cowboys, Yankees, and Lakers. Why? Because historically they have been champions more times than not.

H

evin Zaza’s style isn’t about glitz and glamour. Rather, it’s about an easy sophistication that fits with her lifestyle– one that frequently finds her traveling across the globe. The Syrian-born Zaza has always loved style. Even at a young age, she did her own hair and nails, and took pride in looking her best. After serving as an assistant and manager to several high-profile families (including Phil Mickelson’s family), she is now a fashionista by her own design who creates fun and engaging fashion, beauty and fitness videos at www.stylebyzaza.com. Zaza admits that she goes through quite a lot of clothes, but is committed to her ongoing love of shoes and thinks that they can really make an outfit. She works from home quite a bit, and counts her skinny jeans and leggings as the most comfortable things to wear. Although she lives near many chic boutiques and stores, Zaza prefers to hunt for classic-style clothing and bargains online. She counts Ooh la la, Zappos, My Habit and Amazon as her favorite online places to shop for clothing.

How would you describe your personal sense of style? I don’t follow what’s in style. I have my own style and my own fashion. What I’m comfortable with is what my style is. I don’t go through magazines and say, “Oh, I need to get the latest and greatest.” Where do you get your fashion inspirations? I love simple fashion and I don’t like crazy fashion. I think simple is classier and more noticeable in many ways. What celebrity has a unique fashion style that you love? Angelina Jolie is one of my favorite actresses and she has amazing taste in clothes, style and makeup. She’s elegant, and the more elegant someone is, it brings out their inner beauty. Where are your favorite spots in the Valley to shop, and why? I’m an online shopper. I’m not one to go out to the mall and I don’t have the time and the patience to do that. I have patience for sewing, editing and doing videos, but when it comes to shopping, I find it, “boom,” it’s done.

Michael Bidwill honors the past while taking the Cardinals into the future

A

century ago, it was common for children to follow in their parents’ footsteps. Dad was a carpenter? Well, since he taught you everything he knows, you might as well be one, too. Nowadays, though, you’re much more likely to find kids who go their own way, creating their own path in life on a quest for individuality. Michael Bidwill has managed to do both. By devoting a decade of his life to law (between school and serving as a federal prosecutor for six years) before joining the family business, he got a taste for a career outside of what he’d known his whole life before coming back into the fold. Starting as the Arizona Cardinals vice president/general counsel in 1996, Bidwill has since taken over the role of president (in 2007). It’s a role he is well-suited for, which makes sense given his background.

“I’m third generation running the team,” says Bidwill. “My grandfather bought the team during the Great Depression, then my grandmother took over when he passed, and then my father. I’ve been around it my whole life. I grew up as a ball boy as a young kid and through my teenage years. Then I went to school, then law school, and decided to practice law for six years. I was working on violent crimes. When I got a little burnt out there, I decided I wanted to come back and help my dad get the stadium done. So I came back and worked on that effort, which eventually became University of Phoenix Stadium. It’s been a great privilege and honor, and it’s been exciting to see the changes in football—how it’s become America’s favorite sport and how interested people have become in different aspects of our game, like the draft. [The draft] is something that when I was growing up, people were interested, but now it’s a television event that broadcasts on two national networks and it gains greater ratings than NBA and NHL playoff games going on at the same time. It’s pretty amazing. Last year, every single game in the NFL was sold out. Every game we’ve played at University of Phoenix Stadium has been sold out, and we expect the same this year, which will make 10 years’ worth of sellouts.” Bidwill has had a front row seat to see the league and team change, but there are some things he never wants to change. “There are a lot of traditions around our team,” he explains. “It’s the oldest team in the NFL. I think a lot of people don’t know that we were founded in 1898. Every year we have fielded a team except for one year during World War I. My father and I work closely together, and I’m doing things just a little bit differently than he is. I think I’ve learned a lot of great things from him. My father was innovating during his time and we continue to innovate together and improve not only the safety of the game on the field, but the fan experience, as well.” One might think that the role of a football team president has to be drastically different from that of a federal prosecutor, but the truth is more complicated. “It’s quite a different job, but basically the fundamentals are the same,” says Bidwill. “It’s about working hard and getting prepared. In that case it was for trial and there’s either a winner or a loser at the end of the case and you don’t get a do-over. In football, it’s the same thing. In terms of the day-to-day activities, they are quite different, I can assure you, from what I was doing back in those days versus what I’m doing today. There’s a lot of pressure in winning football games, but there’s no doubt that it’s a different pressure from when I was prosecuting violent crime cases. If you didn’t present the case the right way and the jury didn’t see the facts, there potentially was a violent criminal leaving the courtroom into the community.” The stakes might not be quite as high, but Bidwill takes his role and commitment to this community very seriously. A big focus of the Super Bowl committee this year was to further Arizona’s economic development. “I’ve been working on economic development and other issues for a while, and with each passing year there’s something new to work on,” says Bidwill. “As we moved forward and had a chance to host a Super Bowl, I was all of a sudden front and center and involved in the state’s strategy to take advantage of all the attention the state was going to have. This is the most-watched television event in the history of television, and so it was a great opportunity for SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Arizona to tell a very positive story, and also, around the Super Bowl, the strategy was to bring in visiting CEOs of companies from outside of the state that were interested in potentially moving or expanding their business here. We worked closely with a lot of business leaders around the Super Bowl and Governor Doug Ducey and his office. We worked to bring these CEOs in and entertain them, but also to talk about the positives of doing business in Arizona.” The weekend was a resounding success, with a major Apple deal announced the day after the big game coming as a direct JUNE 2015 |

SS_44_47Bidwill_Jun15.indd 47

47

result of the initiative. Bidwill knows more deals and announcements are coming, but due to non-disclosure agreements, he can’t share details. He hopes all of the positive press will shine a light on the things about Arizona that we can be proud of. “I think we all have a vested interest in how our state is represented,” he says. “I think there were some outlier stories being broadcast on national news that most of us didn’t agree with, so when we got a chance to be on the world stage, we needed to talk about all the great things going on in Arizona—that it’s a great place to live and a great place to do business.” That stadium project that he returned to the team for has also turned out to be quite the positive project. The Cardinals have sold out all 93 games played since the stadium opened in 2006. They sold out 12 total games in 18 seasons at Sun Devil Stadium. In nine seasons at University of Phoenix Stadium, the Cardinals have won their conference once, their division twice, earned three playoff berths and finished .500 or better in 6 of 9. They had two seasons of .500 or better in 18 seasons before moving into University of Phoenix Stadium. “The stadium was the cornerstone for our success,” says Bidwill. “It gave us the ability to have the revenues associated with it. Air conditioning allowed us to have a cool, comfortable place for fans to come to. Having access to all the revenue from the suites and all of the marketing revenue has allowed us to go out and compete and build the kind of team that we wanted to build. It’s exciting that we’ve been able to build it. Frankly, the coaches, the players, and the executive team that we built here have really been the people who have implemented that success. It’s really about the people behind it and the fans giving us home field advantage. We have the best fans in the NFL. In the fourth quarter, it’s one of the most intimidating places for opposing teams to come play with how loud it gets.” The stadium is the most visible piece, but like any good leader, Bidwill gives credit to his team. “It’s not like you get a stadium and you flip a light switch and all of a sudden a team’s going to be successful. We’ve got to have a complete team to make it all work.” It’s a busy life to say the least, so when the players and coaches take time away in June and July before training camp, Bidwill also tries to get away. “I’ve been to Europe quite a few times,” he says. “I like going there and visiting different cities and learning about the culture and seeing different places that I’ve heard about or studied. There are other things in the United States I like to do, as well. A few years ago, I visited New York for my summer break and took two weeks of cooking classes because I wanted to learn to be a better cook. There’s always something I’m trying to do. On one of those trips to Europe several years back I took a Spanish Immersion program in Madrid for a couple of weeks and that was fantastic. I always want to get a little bit of R-n-R, but learn something, as well.” | SO SCOTTSDALE!

WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP? Local stores whenever I can! You can hit a sartorial homerun while supporting the community; it’s a win-win. FAVORITE BRANDS? It can run the gamut; I’ll try anything once. THE ONE THING YOU HOPE YOUR CHILD LEARNS FROM YOU IS: Integrity. It can’t be taken away, but you can easily lose it.

Jose M. Leon CHILDREN: Viviana, 4, and Weston, 1

OCCUPATION: Founder/attorney, Leon Law, PLLC WHAT YOU DO DURING THE DAY: Most times I’m at the office working on getting the best results for my clients. BEST THING ABOUT BEING A DAD: Hearing my kids say, “I love you daddy!” THE ONE THING NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT BEING A DAD: Kids are modeling everything you do. They pick up things you would never have guessed about your mannerisms and personality. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN? We love to travel and enrich our kids’ lives. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? Classic contemporary. YOUR GO-TO TYPES OF OUTFITS ARE: Slacks and a button-up, khakis, dress shirt with a sports coat, and suits are on my weekly rotation. YOUR GUILTY FASHION INDULGENCE? I like to have socks and shoes that will complete the outfit. WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP? Scottsdale Fashion Square, Kierland Commons, and Scottsdale Quarter. FAVORITE BRANDS? Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, and Suitsupply. THE ONE THING YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU IS: Invest time in giving back to others. My involvement with Scottsdale Active 20/30 Club has allowed me to make a significant impact in the lives of underserved kids through our fundraising efforts with our fall event called NiteFlite and our spring events, Brokers for Kids/Agents Benefiting Children.

Kenn Francis CHILDREN: Alex, 26, Dane, 25, and Dylan, 19

OCCUPATION: President, Pacific Realty Advisors WHAT DO YOU DO DURING THE DAY? I feel very fortunate to now be in a position that allows me to do the things I WANT to do, instead of things I HAVE to do. I usually start my day at 5:30 or 6 a.m., jump in the hot tub, swim, grab a coffee, and workout. I get done what needs to get done work-wise, and then plot my next adventure with my wife and people I care about. THE ONE THING NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT BEING A DAD: I learned that kids are on lease to us. We may think they’re our kids, but they’re really not. They are their own individuals. After a brief 18 years or so, the lease is up and you no longer control them. You can’t force them to have a relationship with you, once they’re out on their own. If they don’t want to hang with you anymore, there’s nothing you can do. They now control the relationship. I learned I better not screw it up because I want to spend time with them for years to come. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? Fashion style? My kids laughed when I told them I’d be in this issue. If I have any fashion style at all, it only goes to support my LIFESTYLE. Years ago, I moved to buying clothes that reflect whatever activities I’m doing. FAVORITE BRANDS? You may not find them on the fashion runway, but Arc’teryx jackets and pants are hard to beat. Mountain Hardware, Patagonia and Marmot are also great brands. For regular everyday clothing that’s durable and super comfortable, Prana is a great choice. They used to make only rock climbing clothing but now they do all kinds. THE ONE THING YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU IS: I hope they learn to find balance, by learning what to hang on to and what to let go of. I hope they learned life is about doing and not having. Their time is best spent with people they really care about, creating amazing memories. I hope they’ve learned to just say “yes” to new opportunities and experiences.

OCCUPATION: CEO, Pride Group, LLC WHAT YOU DO DURING THE DAY: Lead and inspire people. BEST THING ABOUT BEING A DAD: Watching them grow into humble, gracious, loving, giving and productive young men. THE ONE THING NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT BEING A DAD: The force multiplier of how much you put in to how much more you get out of being a dad. No one can describe the proud feeling your children generate within your soul. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN? Being present with them no matter what we do— sports, being outdoors, traveling, or simply laughing as a family at the dinner table. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? A relaxed professional. YOUR GO-TO TYPES OF OUTFITS ARE: Tommy Bahama shirts, Lucky jeans and leather loafers, or athletic silk tees, comfortable shorts and bare feet. WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP? Small locally owned stores. FAVORITE BRANDS? Armani, Hugo Boss and Tommy Bahama. THE ONE THING YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU IS: To be humble. To pay it forward. OCCUPATION: Realtor, Realty One Group WHAT YOU DO DURING THE DAY: My fulltime job is real estate re-sale, which involves me spending much of my day on a computer, out showing homes, or staking my sign. BEST THING ABOUT BEING A DAD: Looking into his beautiful, innocent eyes while having our “conversations,” and seeing his smiles and knowing that he’s happy. THE ONE THING NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT BEING A DAD: It is the feeling that came over me when I watched Remy being born. It is the biggest wave of emotion I’ve ever felt in my life. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME WITH YOUR CHILD? In-between naps, poops, feedings and spit-ups, I enjoy talking with him, tummy time and flying airplane. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? I have a less is more type of mentality. I’m not into crazy patterns, flashing labels or lots of accessories. Instead, I like to keep it simple and effortless, especially with the weather here in Arizona, for more of a rugged look. YOUR GO-TO TYPES OF OUTFITS ARE: Jeans or cargo shorts and a fitted T-shirt made of high-quality, comfortable material. YOUR GUILTY FASHION INDULGENCE? When the occasion calls for it, I like to wear a nice quality old-fashioned wristwatch. WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP? Lululemon, Last Chance, Nordstrom Rack. FAVORITE BRANDS? Lululemon. So I’m putting on my collared shirt getting ready for work and the top button won’t close over this wattle of turkey skin that has appeared out of nowhere! Do I need a bigger collar…or do I need a smaller neck? The solution to the problem does not lie in some magic potion applied daily to the neck..nor is the solution a massage with a magic light or an ultrasonic vibrating stick . The solution is in a simple office procedure which will remove the turkey from your neck and permanently reclaim your lower facial and neck contour..yes it’s a NECK LIFT. Dr Wolin has developed an in office procedure to cure this neck problem. The results are permanent, and the patients are ecstatic with their new found youthful neck contours.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Executive Chef Lester Gonzalez of Cowboy Ciao BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

COWBOY CIAO HAS BEEN A SCOTTSDALE DESTINATION SINCE 1997. WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS LED TO ITS CONTINUED SUCCESS?

I think the area itself is a huge factor. Scottsdale is a hot spot for people who want to enjoy a taste of the local food scene. Of course, continued quality, service and overall experience doesn’t hurt, either. CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE MENU?

Our menu is unique, creative and different. It has Italian/Southwest flavors with many global influences that you probably won’t find elsewhere. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DISH THERE?

I am a big fan of our Pork Barbacoa, especially straight out the oven. WHAT LED YOU TO BE A CHEF?

I just wanted to learn how to cook... the whole chef part came later.

ANY COOKING TIPS YOU CAN SHARE?

Sometimes it’s not a bad idea to wrap everything in bacon.

IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF YOU’D BE…

I originally wanted to be a WWE wrestler... I still do. Cowboy Ciao is open from 11:30 .m.-10 p.m. daily, with brunch available on Sun. 7133 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale; 480.946.3111; www.cowboyciao.com.

FEEL THE HEAT

This drink is a little bit sweet and a little bit spicy

“A

BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

ll of our specialty cocktails are variations of traditional cocktails, so when we were thinking about putting a margarita on the menu, we wanted to do something fun, something twisted if you will,” explains Christopher Collins, chef and owner of Twisted Grove. “We got these beautiful red jalapeños in one day and started thinking, ‘What could we do with these?’ We tried infusing the red jalapeño into agave syrup, and fell in love with the flavor when paired with our sweet and sour in a margarita.” And thus, the Sweet & Spicy ($9) was born. The cocktail is made with tequila, Grassroots Sour, jalapeño simple syrup, agave, and cayenne salt. Your first taste from the drink is the bit of spice and salt from the cayenne salt rim, but the heat is quickly quenched by the icy cold refreshing citrus of the margarita. A bit of spice then returns, which begs another refreshing sip. Who would be a fan of this drink? “Anyone who isn’t afraid of a little heat and tequila,” Collins says. “It’s not a drink for sitting around and talking about politics, but if you’re hanging out with your friends enjoying some appetizers on the patio, it’s a perfect fit.” If you’re looking for something to nosh on while you imbibe, Collins recommends pairing the Sweet & Spicy with the Twisted Noodle salad. Other restaurant offerings here include a variety of small plates, sandwiches, and entrées such as the Wild Mushroom Pappardelle, Crab Cakes, and Tucson Pork Chop. 8220 N. Manly products for men BY LISA KASANICKY

an cannot live on soap and water alone. No, sir. To survive the daily onslaught of sun, sweat and stress, man needs product. Manly products. Products that battle the blazing sun, honor your inner jock, and stand strong against muss. Products that keep you vibrant, valiant and virile. Products like these.

Morning Mug Perk up your shaving routine with a morning jolt. Caffeine, a natural vasoconstrictor and antioxidant, is the key ingredient in Pacific Shaving Company’s new Caffeinated Shaving Cream and Aftershave. Along with botanicals like aloe and spearmint, the formulations help reduce the appearance of redness and razor rash while stimulating circulation, and keeping skin bright and perky. $8.99 each at www.pacificshaving.com.

Buff Scruff Cleansing, invigorating and oh-so effective, use Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energizing Scrub weekly to revitalize and smooth skin. Apricot seed powder polishes away dead surface skin cells and other impurities to banish roughness and soften facial hair for a closer shave. A blend of caffeine and menthol boosts and brightens your complexion. $26 at www.kiehls.com.

Dapper Do Rock your modern pompadour with a daub of Mister Pompadour’s Moroccan Texture Paste. Never stiff, never rigid, the coconut and Moroccan Argan oil-infused paste amps your style with a natural, semi-matte finish and a subtly exotic scent. Ideal for shorter, tousled styles, the styling aide adds definition, shine and an air of debonair. $17.50 at www.misterpompadour.com.

Sun Smart Don’t be sun dumb, seriously. The leathery hide and deep lines (and potentially fatal skin diseases) just aren’t worth it. Reach for the bum. Mineral-based Sun Bum Pro SPF 30 Face Stick goes on clear, won’t bleed into your eyes, and won’t come off during even the most rigorous outdoor adventures. $14.99 at www.trustthebum.com.

Smooth Moves Don’t let the name throw you. Uberlube is a weightless, non-greasy finishing product that does it all. Use it to tame frizz and add a subtle sheen to hair, as well as to stave off chafing during exercise. The silicon base keeps skin silky and moisturized, and helps deter the drying effects of pool chlorine. $18 at www.uberlube.com. FUEL UP BEFORE YOU TAKE OFF Heading out on a business trip? Get ready to grab a bite—airport food goes gourmet BY TARYN JEFFRIES

e’ve all been there before… headed to the airport in a rush to make sure you get there in time for that one- to two-hour window before your flight leaves. You may have left home in a rush, almost certain that you forgot something. Was it your cell phone charger? Toothpaste? You may have left in such a rush that you didn’t have time to get a meal in before you headed out. Before you cringe at the idea of having to stop at some overpriced fast food joint or eat the dreaded sticky sweet cinnamon bun (so bad, but so good!), take a deep breath—Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport has recently gotten an intense culinary makeover. Some of your favorite restaurants in town have carved out a delicious spot in the terminal dining arena. So, if you find your stomach rumbling while you ponder if you remembered enough socks, and if you have just a little time before your flight, we’ve got the low-down on the latest and greatest terminal restaurants and their can’t-miss dishes. Best Breakfasts—Terminal 4

Barrio Café Best breakfast choice: Chef Silvana has created an empire one delightful dish at a time. Her interpretations of classic Mexican dishes created with French technique are causing a revolution of sorts that is garnering a great deal of attention. One such dish that may confuse the brain (but tantalize your taste buds) at first look is the Crepa de Chorizo. Your crepe is fill with a Longaniza chorizo, sautéed spinach, onion, shallots and garlic. As if that weren’t enough, it’s also topped off with a slightly spicy hollandaise sauce and avocado.

food files Chelsea’s Kitchen Best breakfast choice: Eggs Benedict are always a hit, but when you add in a rich buttery crab cake, it takes breakfast to a whole new level. The jumbo lump crab to filler ratio is perfect, and the addition of spinach makes you feel a little better about that buttery velvet hollandaise sauce. Pair it with a mimosa, and it’s the perfect way to start your day. This hometown favorite restaurant is so good and feels so much like a stand-alone restaurant that you just might forget you’re at an airport–so don’t forget to catch your flight!

portion is as hearty as it gets, and the combination of the chicken and waffles, whether you top them with gravy or syrup, is something you have to experience at least once—though you’re sure to want it again and again. Blanco Tacos & Tequila Best breakfast choice: You’re in Arizona, and what’s better for a quick breakfast in Arizona than the versatile Breakfast Burrito? It’s perfect, really. It looks good on a dish and is also easily transformed into tasty traveling food. Here, you’ll find five enticing varieties: Machaca & Eggs, Steak & Eggs, Eggs & Mexican Cheese, Bacon & Eggs and Chorizo & Eggs, though I am sure if you are especially nice there may be some room for mixing and matching. All of the burritos come with breakfast potatoes and house salsa. La Grande Orange Best breakfast choice: While yes, they’re known more for their pizza pies, this airport location also serves up satisfying breakfast options. Be warned that the Zuni Burrito might be messy, but it’s worth it. It’s a whole wheat tortilla with tofu “chorizo,“ mushrooms, corn, spinach, potatoes, egg whites and charred tomato salsa. There are also egg dishes, pancakes, and oatmeal. Of course, the restaurant’s cheery bright green chairs offer a visually pleasing way to start your day, as well!

Matt’s Big Breakfast

Matt’s Big Breakfast Best breakfast choice: Matt’s Big Breakfast entrée is calling your name. Three cage fresh eggs, thick cut bacon sourced out of Queen Creek, sausage patties, sweet and salty home fries, and a griddle cake are just what you need to get you going. Your eggs will be cooked to order, and your bacon will be thick and perfectly peppery. The griddle cakes arrive massive in size and dotted with sweet cream and a side of real maple syrup. The best part? There are no true price spikes just because you are at the airport—the prices are on par with the restaurant’s Downtown Phoenix location. Cowboy Ciao Best breakfast choice: Corned beef hash is a breakfast staple, and Cowboy Ciao has spiced up this traditional dish with its Hardy Hatch Hash & Eggs. The dish comes with red country-style potatoes with Hatch chiles and pastrami spiced shredded short ribs all topped with two over easy eggs. The introduction of the Hatch chiles will really open your eyes and give you a whole new perspective on your day. Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles Best breakfast choice: While Lo-Lo’s has some stellar breakfast options, it’s Lo-Lo’s and you know what you want. Go for the KK’s Special, which has three pieces of Southern-style chicken, two waffles, grits, and two eggs with cheese and onions. The JUNE 2015 |

Olive & Ivy Best breakfast choice: Olive & Ivy creates an atmosphere of ease and convenience in a marketplace setting, as well as a comfortable place to grab a table while you enjoy your meal and peruse the paper before your flight. If you’re looking for something light but filling, try the Yogurt Partait, which is a medley of fresh berries including plump blackberries, blueberries and strawberries with almond granola served over yogurt. Zinc Brasserie Best breakfast choice: Decadent French cuisine at the airport? Yes, it’s true. For breakfast here, try the Zinc Omelet, made with French ham, gruyère, crème fraîche and straw potatoes. Or if you need more carbs to get you through your flight, go for the Zinc Croissant, which is made with a fried egg and gruyère. Why not take a minute and pretend that flight you’re about to take is to Paris instead of Des Moines?

Best Breakfasts—Terminal 2

Barrio Avion Best breakfast choice: The breakfast options offered at Chef Silvana’s most recent venture provide that perfect extra kick in the pants you need for an early flight. The most popular option is definitely the Build Your Own Burrito. Opt for items in it such as scrambled eggs, cheese, chorizo, spinach, guacamole, and more. There are also chilaquiles or an eye-opening quesadilla. You’ll find fresh ingredients and perfectly seasoned meats of varying heat levels. With generous portions and great flavors, this is a perfect start to your day of travel. | SO SCOTTSDALE!

n 1804 France, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin was left a widow—or veuve in French—at the tender age of 27. Although this was the 19th Century, a time when women were relegated to living in the shadow of their husbands, and off of the fortunes of them, Monsieur Clicquot’s death left Madame Clicquot in control of a company with holdings in banking, wool trading and the Bouzy Vineyards. The daughter of a politician and wildly brilliant in her own right, rather than sell the business and live off of the resulting fortune, the often audacious (for that time) Madame Clicquot secured funding and invested in the research and development of champagne. By 1810, Madame Clicquot created the first-ever recorded vintage of champagne in the region. She is also named as the first-ever creator of Rosè Champagne. In addition, she pioneered riddling, a technique that removes the cloudiness present in champagne, effectively moving champagne itself— not to mention her now-named Veuve Clicquot brand—to the mainstream. Today, Veuve Clicquot still lives by the motto that Madame Clicquot instilled in her winemakers 200 years ago from her own predecessors: “Only one quality, the finest.” In homage to this “Grand Dame of Champagne,” the Veuve Clicquot house developed two unique champagne blends in her honor, both as complex and fresh as Madame Clicquot herself. Among the most beloved and sought-after champagnes in the world, both varietals are strong and full-bodied enough to stand up to a man’s palate, but subtle, seductive and smart enough for a woman’s, as well.

La Grande Dame Brut Awarded 94 points by Wine Spectator magazine and the Silver Medal in the Decanter World Wine Awards, this is Veuve’s prestige cuveè. The incomparable finesse of this champagne is the result of blending eight of the of brand’s traditional Grand Crus: Aÿ, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy,

Verzenay, Avize, Oger, and Le Mesnil sur Oger. Once combined, each barrel is aged for an extended period of time in ancient chalk cellars. It is a blend of 61% Pinot Noir and 39% of Chardonnay, all directly from Champagne, France. Smooth and silky, offering a hint of ripe banana on the nose and bubbly grapefruit on the palate, the full-bodied effervescence is meant as a direct tribute to the Grande Dame herself. La Grande Dame Brut ranges from $179.99-$210 per bottle. It can be found at the Wine Store, AJ’s, BevMo and Total Wine.

La Grande Dame Rosè Noted as the rarest of Veuve Clicquot’s varietals, La Grande Dame Rosè was created by adding 15% Pinot Noir from Madame Clicquot’s Clos Colin vineyard in Bouzy, France to the La Grande Dame 2004 blend. The result—a luminous, coppery pink champagne whose first nose reveals a solid mineral structure with hints of white peach, red currant, and even blueberry. On the palate, the champagne is crisp yet silky, with notes of brioche and cinnamon. La Grande Dame Rosè ranges from $310-$389.99 per bottle. It can be found at the Wine Store, AJ’s, BevMo and Total Wine upon request, as availability is limited.

new in town kids’ menu has healthy options that can entice the pickiest of eaters with combinations like Chicken and Broccoli with Cheese, Tofu with Smashed Potatoes, and more. Regulars swear by the delicious and unique Kombucha drink (ask your server for details and be ready to enjoy), but keep an eye out for other favorites like the Avocado Hummus, mix and match plates to help you create the perfect combination, and an assortment of local beers and wines. “There’s a need for feel-good food out there, and it can be hard to come by in a quick, causal setting—that’s where Flower Child stemmed from,” explains founder Sam Fox. “Providing food that makes people happy and healthy in a convenient way without ever having to sacrifice our values is one of the main reasons we’re growing this concept.” The foundation of Flower Child, which opened its first location in April of last year, was built with strong influences from True Food Kitchen’s

t’s just about dinner time. The kids are hungry, you’re hungry, and tensions are running high. You’ve tried so hard to meal plan, but let’s be honest, it doesn’t always work out. Or let’s say it’s lunchtime and you forgot to bring a healthy option to work. You could run out and grab something fast, but it’s likely going to be junk food. Or if it’s healthy, it’ll be the same old sit-down, expensive spot that you went to last week. Fear not, for a new Flower Child is now open in Scottsdale. The Arcadia Sam Fox concept that’s been wowing Phoenix with its delicious, healthy options

for the whole family is new to town with location number two, and just in time to save you from another mealtime conundrum. And did we mention it’s fast? Well, fast it is. With farm fresh and flavorful food in a fast-casual environment, it’s the best of both worlds, while also being pretty good for the world. Even the

No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
