Parisian

Perfection A one-on-one interview with renowned French stylist Jo, owner of Jo Paris Salon

J

o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color

line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

Jo Paris Salon & Spa is located at 14202 N. Scottsdale Rd. and at (480) 663-8994 or visit their website at www.joparissalon.com

People talk about seizing the day, so why not seize the summer? Think high-energy pool parties (page 56), refreshing drinks that give back (page 82), seasonal menus (page 42), and cool ways to beat the heat from on-water workouts to icy escapes (page 54). Not to mention an all-new indoor farmers market (page 48), so you don’t have to give up getting your weekend foodie finds just because it’s hot. While you’re at it, dream up your next summer sojourn, from heading to Huntington Beach (page 77) to vacationing in Venice, Italy (page 80) to cruising on Lake Powell (page 75). Or, let our collection of tropic-inspired treasures help you feel like you’re worlds away, right at home (page 64). In honor of the National Day of the Cowboy (celebrated July 28), pick out a pair of style-savvy boots (page 61) and rein in your own Southern charm with summer-approved styles from the quintessential Southern belle herself, Reese Witherspoon (page 68). Speaking of cowboy, or, rather, the Cowboys, our cover star Emily Greinke – who was a former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader and Miss Daytona Beach USA – is now an Arizona gal through and through. Married to D-backs pitcher Zack Greinke, Emily gives us a glimpse into her journey (page 36) from small-town Florida to her formative years in the spotlight to her life now, where she is focused on family, raising her two young boys, and giving back to the community she now calls home. Finally, on a personal note, I chose to include an inaugural event close to my heart: the SpayGhetti and No Balls Gala (page 52), which raises funds for spaying and neutering initiatives at Arizona Small Dog Rescue. Most of the animals at this rescue come from the euthanasia list at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control, where I recently rescued a sweet dog who was found as a stray (and not spayed) by a county field officer. Pet overpopulation is a real issue, and this event is just one way to mitigate that while helping other pups like my new fur baby, Hope, actually have hope. Here’s to seizing your summer! LIVING HIS LEGACY Kyle Mauch talks building a life-changing business after baseball

When former minor league baseball player Kyle Mauch begins talking about his business as entrepreneur, speaker, consultant and podcast host, he lights up and his passion is infectious. “When you can’t wait for Monday, you’re living a life in charge,” Mauch says. “That’s what I wanted to have when I built

Athletes Brand, a company that makes me wake up every morning excited for what the day has to offer.” It’s those moments that make the man, and, from those moments, Mauch built his empire. Mauch grew up in a small town in southern Oregon and was

Pulse UP CLOSE raised with a ball in one hand and a dusty baseball mitt in the other. A son of a former baseball player and a younger sibling to two up-and-coming athletes, Mauch seemed destined for the sport. “Growing up in a family of baseball players and raised in a town where sports were everything, I never really thought of doing anything else,” Mauch says. “Your life was baseball and you never really got the chance to explore any other passions.” Mauch quickly excelled through high school and college baseball and was praised as the kid who was “going to make it.” Everyone said that he would go far, maybe even make it to major league baseball. At the time, it was the only goal he ever had, and, yet, when finally tapped from the minor leagues by a scout to try out for the San Diego Padres, Mauch hesitated. “I was still rehabilitating from a devastating injury from the previous season,” Mauch says. “And all of the sudden, baseball seemed like an endless series of possible injuries and a future of only being a ballplayer. I was on the cusp of attaining the dream I had always chased, yet it didn’t have the same appeal as some of the other successes I was beginning to experience.” Mauch had just launched his first business, Refined Craft, while playing NCAA Division 1 baseball. Refined Craft was a website where Mauch sold custom-designed T-shirts, a hobby of his at the time. After a few months of decent sales, a fellow player asked if he could design a T-shirt and sell it for one of his favorite charities. Seemingly overnight, the concept took off and dozens of athletes were approaching him to launch their own shirt designs and raise money for their own charities. It was time for Mauch to decide which path to take: the straight and narrow road of professional baseball or the curved path of entrepreneurship.

Scoring Big Shocking everyone, Mauch turned his back on the professional baseball contract and went on to found a second company called Athletes Brand, a consulting firm that helps athletes craft their legacy beyond their profession while raising money for their own nonprofits – and has gone on to do the same for musicians, actors and entrepreneurs. His network and access to a hard-to-reach group gave him an edge, but his sincere manner and approach made Athletes Brand the talk of the industry. Just six months after the launch of Athletes Brand, Mauch was making six figures as the sole owner and operator of his companies. Today, Athletes Brand is a seven-figure business working with more than 800 pro athletes from around the world. Mauch had finally created a legacy bigger than the game he had loved. “Athletes Brand is a system of brand-building techniques that helps its clients understand what their relevant value is and how they can use it to change the world for the better,” Mauch says. “Our company’s goal is to make altruism a foundation of business, career and life instead of just an act of kindness.” Since launching Athletes Brand, Mauch has been named Arizona’s Top Apparel Designer 2018 by Arizona Foothills Magazine and the 2012 and 2013 “30 Under 30” in the sports industry by Forbes. He has also been featured on Good Morning America, Fox, CNN, ESPN, OWN, MLB Network, and Bleacher

Report as well as in National Geographic and The New York Times. Mauch even had the opportunity to pitch his company to Danica Patrick at 120 mph while driving a NASCAR. Most recently, Mauch has found a passion for inspirational speaking and often tours the corporate circuit sharing his story. “I’ve never regretted turning my back on baseball,” Mauch says. “My life is so much more fulfilling now that I can continue to inspire others, help my clients build their brands, and help bring positive change. I wake up every morning feeling lucky about what I do, and I’m not sure a life as an athlete would have fulfilled me in quite the same way.”

SUGAR RUSH

Nicole Pepin, owner of Layla Bean Cakery, dreams up sweets for every occasion

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Nicole Pepin creates desserts that are almost too pretty to eat. With scrumptious treats that are truly mini works of art, the entrepreneur and self-taught baking enthusiast is making life a little sweeter with her custom confectionary company, Layla Bean Cakery (www.laylabeancakery.com). Named after her 14-year-old dog Layla Bean, who Pepin says is sweeter than any cupcake, she adds that “Layla’s spunky spirit is a daily reminder to be happy and spread love, which I try to reflect in my baking.” It wasn’t until after college – and a 10-year career working in trust tax – that cake decorating become Pepin’s hobby of choice. Seeing the happiness she brought to others made it apparent that she wanted to consider a venture that allowed her to share her confectionary appetite with the world. “I’m not just selling cupcakes,” Pepin says. “It’s evolved into a lifestyle brand where I am connected to the community and partner with other like-minded entrepreneurs who share a similar creative vision.” Each treat Pepin creates is handmade from scratch with all-natural ingredients, providing a homestyle quality taste and professional presentation. From dessert tables and wedding cakes to personalized cookies, cake pops and edible printing, each item is beautiful and unique. “I look at each new order as an opportunity to be a part of someone’s happiest milestones in life, such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and graduations – all of which are sweetened with a little slice of cake I put my heart into.” While Pepin creates her delicacies from home, she offers cake-decorating classes throughout the Valley, including at Pinspiration, as well as private workshops for parties and events in addition to providing sweets for any occasion. “Deciding to follow a dream and start a business has been the most courageous thing I’ve ever done,” Pepin says. “It’s hard work, but I’m a tough cookie and I’m proud of that. Nothing can shake the sprinkles off this cupcake!” The future of Layla Bean Cakery is sweet; the entrepreneur has a dessert blog, cookbook and YouTube channel in the works. “I plan to take whatever ingredients life throws at me and write my own recipe for success.”

MAKING MEMORIES

Mark Rukavina helps people relive special moments and milestones

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

From baby steps to wedding bells and everything in-between, seasoned entrepreneur Mark Rukavina knows a thing or two about creating memories to last a lifetime. Originally from Colorado, Rukavina graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in marketing and has called Arizona home ever since. He is the founder and CEO of iMemories (www.imemories.com), a national brand with Scottsdale roots that specializes in converting older camcorder videotapes, home movie films, photos, slides and negatives into a modern digital format so they can be enjoyed utilizing current technology. As the world turned to digital photos and videos, Rukavina recognized that decades of priceless family milestones were trapped on outdated and obsolete formats. “With my background in product and technology design, I knew I could build a company that provided exactly what people wanted: An effortless and affordable way to convert their older family memories to a modern digital format so they can be easily viewed and shared on any modern device or social network.” Inspired by technology executives like Steve Jobs, Rukavina’s passion for building tech companies from the ground up and experiencing every phase of company growth support his mission in a technology-filled world. “As the CEO of iMemories, I wear many hats, but my favorite job is to design innovative products and technology and use best-in-class marketing to sell them,” Rukavina says. The fact that iMemories’ products touch people’s hearts in a deep and profound way is particularly rewarding to Rukavina. “Each and every day, customers nationwide go on about the joy, laughter and nostalgia they’ve experienced reliving decades of family memories they’ve rediscovered through iMemories, most of which they had forgotten about or have never seen.” With three tech companies under his belt, Rukavina is focusing on elevating the iMemories user experience with a new suite of web and mobile apps. “iMemories just moved into a brand-new, stateof-the-art facility in Scottsdale so we can handle even more scale,” Rukavina says. “With more than 1 billion home movies and 1 trillion photos to digitize, we have a lot of work to do!”

KEEPING IT SIMPLE

When it comes to fashion, Eric Marcus doesn’t disregard the power of classic comfort

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Balancing comfort and style requires a trendy eye and Eric Marcus, CEO and president of telecommunication technology company Marcus Networking Inc., has just that. As a relentless entrepreneur that believes heavily in karma, Marcus stays active and makes sure his ensembles reflect his affinity for the outdoor lifestyle by incorporating camouflage and plaid prints throughout his closet. Forget the tux and tails; Marcus prefers to combine the laid-back vibe of his Southern California upbringing with designer pieces like his go-to Tom Ford tortoise sunglasses. By keeping his style simple yet sophisticated, Marcus simply adds a button-down dress shirt and watch to take his look from day to night. Weekends call for graphic print tees and Lululemon pants, while, on workdays, you’ll find the adventurous father of two girls in a T-shirt and skinny jeans. “My career allows me to keep it comfortable and casual,” Marcus says. “With being an entrepreneur, you can dictate how you want to be dressed and be perceived.” Lucky Brand jeans, Hurley T-shirts, and classic Chuck Taylor shoes are wardrobe staples that allow Marcus – along with his family – to travel and experience all the beauty Arizona has to offer in comfort and style.

What is your most prized clothing possession? My North Face jacket. It’s so comfortable and great for people who love to spend time outdoors. What would someone say if they looked in your closet? It’s organized! Everything is color coded with two-finger hanger space and categorized by style. What is your No. 1 style tip? The hair has got to be right. It’s important to have a great product, like my GO24/7 cream wax.

FEEL-GOOD FASHION Flattering, feminine cuts define Nanda Vann’s graceful sense of style

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Valley native Nanda Vann knows a thing or two about nailing an effortlessly elegant mix of aesthetics. Influenced by smart, chic icons such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Audrey Hepburn, Vann incorporates their sophisticated styles with her modern fashion inspirations, Amal Clooney and Victoria Beckham. As a loyal Banana Republic shopper, she turns to pieces that are bold and flatter her body. “I am a firm believer of dressing for your body type,” Vann says. “Women are often too hard on themselves for not living up to certain societal standards.” While her workdays call for pencil skirts, ruffled shirts and pastel suits, Vann’s preferred rompers and sun dresses make weekend appearances. “I live for spring and summer, and those are the seasons that I enjoy dressing for the most.” Recently, she’s learned to appreciate higher-end designer and luxury brands while maintaining that you can look polished and turn heads on a more conservative budget. “I’ve definitely evolved from my horrible sense of fashion in my early college days, where I didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin, to feeling more confident in my choices now as a woman in her 30s,” Vann says. “It’s simply a matter of wearing clothing that makes you feel good about yourself.”

What are your must-have items? Skinny jeans and confidence! My favorite trends right now are high-waisted pants, statement suits, and classics such as polka dots or ruffles. What are your favorite stores? My guilty pleasure is shopping at Nordstrom Rack and Last Chance. How do you transition from work to nighttime? I think the easiest way to do this is to keep the heels and remove layers. Less is more for evening festivities and applying a bolder lip color will always do the trick.

Emily Greinke shares her journey from a small town to the spotlight and, now, to serving her community and her family

So Scottsdale! July ‘18

37

Though technically the words of country music icon John Michael Montgomery, the lyrics “life’s a dance, you learn as you go” could easily be applied to Emily Greinke’s life. “I grew up in a small town just outside of Orlando called Apopka. Back when I lived there, the population was just 22,000,” says Greinke, who spent most of her teens in various dance classes and volunteering as a library assistant. Her beau throughout school – Donald Zackary “Zack” Greinke – spent many days studying in said library, both to be near Greinke and to keep his grades up so he could play baseball. He was also a huge fan of her dance talent, and he was not alone. “At 18 years old, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders announced they would be holding an open casting call at the mall near my house, so I went ahead and tried out,” Greinke says. “And I actually made the team!” Once notified, Greinke was given two days to get from Florida to Texas to begin practices. There was just one problem: She was still in high school. “Thankfully, my teachers worked with me so that I could do assignments remotely while relocating to Dallas – sight unseen – and take on this adventure,” says Greinke, who became fast friends and eventually roommates with a fellow 18-year-old, firstyear cheerleader named Micaela. At the same time, her boyfriend Zack was starting an adventure of his own. Named the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year his senior year, the Kansas City Royals selected him in the 2002 Major League Baseball draft. He would spend the next two years developing under them as a pitching prospect – though he played shortstop growing up and in high school – before making his major league debut in 2004. “During those two years, he was working away on the field while I not only cheered every Cowboys home game but was also chosen to represent the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders on USO Tours that took us to England, Belgium, Iceland, the Netherlands, Germany and even South Korea on four separate occasions,” says Greinke, noting Zack would make the drive from Kansas City to Dallas when the season ended so they could be together. By 2005, Greinke, who was not even 21 years old and already a world traveler and accomplished dancer, was ready to head back to Florida, where both her and Zack’s families lived. “There, I worked toward my college degree, earning it from the University of Central Florida in 2008 while modeling and acting in commercials,” Greinke says. “At one point, I joined the pageant world, competing and winning Miss Daytona Beach USA, and then competing for Miss Florida USA.” In 2009, Zack won the MLB American League Cy Young Award – given to the best pitchers in the U.S. – and was chosen for the MLB All-Star Game, leading the major leagues in earned run average. Perhaps even bigger than that, Greinke and Zack got engaged in February 2009 and married that November, initially making a home in Kansas City. The next few years would be a whirlwind as Greinke launched a jewelry line with still-best friend Micaela called ME Designs (www.shopmedesigns.com). “Our focus is to design jewelry that brings out the best ‘me’ in yourself while adding glamour to your everyday look,” Greinke says.

“ABOVE ALL ELSE, THOUGH, FAMILY TIME IS SO IMPORTANT TO US, SO ANY FREE TIME WE DO GET WITH THE BUSY BASEBALL SCHEDULE, WE PLAY WITH BODE AND GRIFF. LISTENING TO BODE TALK AND WATCHING HIM LEARN IS SO MUCH FUN AT THIS AGE, AND GRIFF IS RIGHT THERE TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH HIS BIG BROTHER’S EVERY STEP.”

“Each piece signifies an attitude that reminds you to embrace the qualities that make you unique and wonderful.” The brand would quickly grow in popularity among fellow baseball wives and, today, includes bracelets, earrings, necklaces and even “mini me” items for children. Zack would be similarly busy playing for the Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Angels, and Los Angeles Dodgers. And then, in 2015, he became a free agent just as the Greinkes became parents for the first time to oldest son Bode, who was born that July.

Arizona Bound By year’s end, Greinke and Zack made the decision to sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Zack made his debut with the team on opening day in April 2016. Another Greinke made his debut in Arizona soon after, as the family welcomed little Griffin in June 2017. Just a month later, Zack would represent the Arizona Diamondbacks in the MLB All-Star Game, which marked his fourth time being selected since 2009. Last season, he would also help the team finish with an impressive 93-69 record, which clinched them a Wild Card playoff spot. And though they lost to Zack’s former team – the Dodgers – in the Division Series, he would win his fourth consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Award and come in fourth in the Cy Young voting. “Above all else, though, family time is so important to us, so any free time we do get with the busy baseball schedule, we play with Bode and Griff. Listening to Bode talk and watching him learn is so much fun at this age, and Griff is right there trying to keep up with his big brother’s every step,” Greinke says. Beyond the field and crib, the Greinkes, who reside in Paradise Valley, are passionate supporters of Chrysalis, a nonprofit servicing the needs of women, children and men throughout the Valley who are trying to break the cycle of violence and abuse with an array of comprehensive services including transitional housing, counseling and community education. This year alone, the organization will help 1,300 individuals in need. “In recent years, I had the great honor of serving on the board for Driving Out Domestic Violence, a two-day fundraising event with both a golf tournament and gala that serves as the primary fundraising vehicle for the organization,” says Greinke, who was an honorary chair in 2017, along with Zack. She also counts the Boys & Girls Clubs as a cause near and dear to their family’s heart, especially Zack’s. Eager to get back into community stewardship – albeit once the boys are in preschool – Greinke is looking to both those organizations as well as those that support animals, specifically felines. “Zack and I rescued a little kitty that we named Wilson, or Wilsy for short, years ago who is still considered our first child,” Greinke says. “At one point, my primary focus was volunteering with animal shelters in other parts of the country, so I’m really looking forward to exploring charities that help four-legged friends of the cat variety here in the Valley.” As with all else in life, Greinke is open to whatever the journey has in store for her family next – be it on the field, in the family or in the community – and is happy to keep on learning as she goes.

GOING GREEN

We can all agree that our earth is precious, and one local company is taking that sentiment to heart – and putting it into action. My Sister’s Closet recently launched a #H8PLSTC campaign with the hopes of starting a trend for other local businesses to eliminate the use of plastic. All locations of My Sister’s Closet, Well Suited and My Sister’s Attic are no longer using plastic bags and or allowing employees to drink out of plastic bottles. In a move that has cost the company $20,000 per store, My Sister’s Closet now uses paper shopping bags, steel gaylords for donations, and water filtration systems to fill up reusable/recyclable cups. Additionally, for the duration of the campaign, all money donated to My Sisters’ Charities, the companies’ nonprofit organization, will benefit the Center for Biological Diversity, which is dedicated to the protection of endangered species and wild places. www. mysisterscloset.com.

PARTY FOR PETS

Help furry friends at the inaugural SpayGhetti and No Balls Gala

BY MANDY HOLMES

IF YOU GO… What: SpayGhetti and No Balls Gala When: July 28, 6 p.m. Where: Hyatt Regency Scottsdale, 7500 E. Doubletree Ranch Road, Scottsdale Tickets: $70 Information: www.azsmalldog.org

Don’t let the funny name fool you – the inaugural SpayGhetti and No Balls Gala is serious about raising funds for spay and neuter initiatives at Arizona Small Dog Rescue. The evening event will be held on Saturday, July 28 at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch, where animal-loving guests will be treated to an authentic Italian buffet of spaghetti with marinara sauce (sans meatballs) and chicken parmigiana with traditional Italian sides. After dinner, Portillo’s famous chocolate cake will be served for dessert followed by a raffle and dancing to a live band. In addition to pasta and partying, guests can aim to be the highest bidder on silent auction items such as concert and

sporting event tickets, local hotel stays, and curated date night packages. A luxury weekend in Sedona and a custom-built dog crate by Copper State Kennel will also be up for grabs at the highly anticipated auction. “Last year alone, Arizona Small Dog rescue spent nearly $60,000 to spay and neuter more than 900 animals that came into our shelter. This is a huge expenditure for us,” says Linda Bridgeman, the event’s organizer. “The funds raised during the gala will be used exclusively toward spaying and neutering costs for future procedures.” Arizona Small Dog Rescue is a no-kill shelter and rescue organization with a mission to help with the care, rehabilitation and adoption of abused, unwanted, homeless, sick or injured animals throughout the

greater Phoenix area. Most of the animals at the rescue come from the euthanasia list at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control and other shelters in the area. Others are surrendered by owners who can no longer care for their pets, while some are injured, ill or stray dogs brought in by good Samaritans. Volunteers also work tirelessly to find forever homes for the rescued animals. “If we can reduce the number of unwanted animals in our community through spaying and neutering, we will diminish the number of animals who are needlessly euthanized each year because of pet overpopulation,” Bridgeman says. “That is a significant win for everyone involved – especially our four-legged friends.”

KEEP YOUR COOL Six ways to beat the heat

As the sweltering summer sun continues heating up the Valley, it’s time to cool down. From frozen treats to cool pools to icy escapes, there are plenty of spots in town to chill out.

BY MANDY HOLMES

Get the Scoop Snack on indulgences to help you make it through triple-digit temps at two local treateries. Scoop and Joy (www.scoopandjoylounge.com) offers small-batch ice cream, crepes, waffles and scones made in-house among an old-fashioned ice cream parlor vibe. And at Shakes and Cones (www.shakesandcones.com), the soft-serve ice cream is made from scratch using organic, non-GMO ingredients – and is gluten- and egg-free. Try a customizable specialty shake, float or the signature Nutty Buddy creation named after the ice cream shop dog. At the Movies Grab the kiddos and head to Harkins Theatres Valley-wide to catch a movie for a steal – $2 per film or $7 for a package that includes five films – through Aug. 3, a summer tradition the company has offered for more than 43 years. July movies include Ferdinand (July 2-6), The Emoji Movie (July 9-13), Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (July 16-20), Paddington 2 (July 23-27), and Kubo and the Two Strings (July 30-Aug. 3). Visitors of all ages can chill out in this frozen playground, which features games like cornhole, shuffleboard and giant checkers made completely out of ice. The venue is kidfriendly from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., then turns to an adults-only bar experience at 7 p.m. There’s food and plenty of icy drinks (slushies for kids and “sloshys” for adults), while parkas and gloves are provided to keep you warm in the arctic temperatures. www.polarplay.com. Yoga on the Water Elevate your workout game with paddleboard yoga at two hotels: The Saguaro and Hotel Adeline. take your SEX LIFE to the NEXT LEVEL! PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE • REJUVENATION • TUNE-UP • TURBO CHARGE

THE NEWEST, MOST INNOVATIVE TREATMENT FOR MEN.

THE OLD ADAGE IS TRUE: IF YOU DON’T USE IT, YOU LOSE IT.

The power of your erection is based entirely on blood volume. The better the blood flow, the stronger the erection. As men age, harmless activities like sex and sports cause scar-tissue build up along the length of the penis. What does this mean? Less blood flow, possible curvatures due to scar tissue build-up, and…yes. Shrinkage. GainsWave Technology utilizes high-frequency, low-intensity sound waves to increase local circulation, repair aged blood vessels, and stimulate growth of new blood vessels and nerve cells. This removes years of micro-plaque and tissue build up. The result? Harder, stronger erections, increased sensitivity, and even greater girth and length. Yes, that’s what we said… you will get bigger. We guarantee it. Don’t lose it. Use it, and enjoy it. Call today to schedule your consultation.

THE WORLD AS HER CANVAS Mexican painter Laura Coppel creates colorful masterpieces

BY OFELIA MONTELONGO

Laura Coppel grew up among brushes and vivid colors in Mazatlan, Mexico. The longtime Scottsdale resident’s love for art began at an early age thanks to her mother and uncle, who are painters and inspired Coppel to be an artist herself. Coppel received her art education at the University of Monterrey and has developed her skills attending art classes in cities around the world, including painting workshops at Phoenix Center for the Arts. The Mexican painter uses different techniques such as cubism, abstract, expressionism and pop art to create eye-catching paintings that often depict animals, landscapes and portraits. Besides nature, Coppel’s influences include music as well as abstract and cubism painters such as Gustav Klimt, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Joan Miró. The artist, who expects to open a gallery soon in the Valley, divides her time between her home studio in Scottsdale and Mexico. She enjoys expressing herself through her art and she has fun incorporating her Latino roots into each brushstroke. “We [Latinos] have the party inside; we always look for moments to celebrate life,” Coppel says. “Mexico is a country of intense, fun colors.” Coppel says she visualizes a painting before she starts, uses acrylic paint, and often adds gold leaf. Most of her paintings are large. “I see [my paintings] as a set of elements whose union produces certain visual satisfaction with the balance of the combination of colors and with a great influence of the music transmitted through my movements, intentionally causing it to be a communication of an experience like an end in itself.” Her latest collection, Animalia, is a cubism series depicting a bull, a lion and a deer, among other fascinating animals. Her paintings are designed to awaken one’s senses while admiring the beauty of vibrant colors. But her creativity doesn’t stop on a canvas – she also captures her art on handbags and considers all wearable items to be an active gallery. “Handbags are a [medium] I like to use to spread my artwork in a fashionable and fun way,” says Coppel, who will soon expand her collection and paint on-trend items such as fabric for clothing and sneakers. Coppel has exhibited her work in galleries around the Valley as well as at the Phoenix’s Consulate General of Mexico and the Centro Cultural Universitario in Mazatlan, Mexico. Her upcoming exhibitions will be held in Los Cabos, Mexico; in select U.S. cities; and Europe. She also donates pieces or portions of her paintings’ proceeds to help select nonprofits and foundations. Coppel’s work for sale can be found online at www.lauracoppelart.com or through her Instagram account: @lauracoppelart.

PREPLESS VENEERS

Transforming Patient’s Smiles BEFORE

AFTER Truly prepless veneers, with zero anesthetic used.

The conventional process of applying dental veneers generally involves shaving away a significant portion of the tooth. In many cases, temporary dental veneers must be worn while the permanent dental veneers are manufactured in a lab. Because a prepless porcelain veneer is as thin as a contact lens, the porcelain veneer application process requires little to no tooth reduction. The veneers are bonded to your teeth and you are left with the shape and color you’ve always wanted. The material is incredibly durable, and we stand behind them with a 5 year guarantee against breakage. The process is less invasive than the traditional porcelain veneer process. Most patients find that they immediately enjoy their new smiles without any post-procedure discomfort or sensitivity. You will be amazed at how beautiful, natural and authentic dental veneers look.

2018 BENTLEY BENTAYGA The world’s most expensive luxury SUV is automotive nirvana BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $231,825 Price as tested: $241,725

The notion of purchasing a new vehicle costing upward of a quarter-million dollars is unthinkable for many. However, for those in the market for a luxury SUV to the extreme, look no further than the 2018 Bentley Bentayga. The Bentley Bentayga – which is Swahili for “carried interest” – heralds the arrival of a brand-new automotive segment: ultra-luxury SUVs. Later this year, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini and Aston Martin will also debut SUVs that easily supplant the $150,000 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Edition as the must-have vehicle for the privileged. With 600 horsepower and a top speed of 187 mph, the all-wheel-drive Bentayga is the fastest, most luxurious, most expensive SUV in the world. It goes from zero to 60 in just four seconds and can easily negotiate sand dunes and boulder-strewn trails while holding its own on the racetrack. Bentayga’s ostentatious exterior mimics the brand’s passenger car with its large matrix grille,

and the muscular rear design suggests power and performance. There’s an endless array of exterior color choices (17 standard and more than 100 optional) that are custom-matched to the quilted leather saddlery inside. The opulent interior is nothing short of a work of art. Choose from 15 perfectly matched, unblemished bull hides sourced from the Outer Hebrides and highly polished veneers of burr walnut, dark fiddleback eucalyptus, or stained madrone burl timbers to complement the metallic pull handles for the ventilation system. Did I mention the state-of-the-art Naim Audio system and the voice assistance that’s offered in 30 different languages? And, you may just want to take your shoes off when entering so as to not soil the deep pile wool floor mats. With excessive performance and a vast complexity of nouveau riche self-consciousness, Bentley Bentayga delivers far more of everything it’s supposed to, and does it with style and verve, resulting in the automotive equivalent of nirvana.

VENTURE TO VENICE Discover an idyllic Italian escape in the City of Canals

BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

Venice, Italy, is one of the most romantic destinations in the world. As the Northern Italian capital of Veneto, the city consists of more than 100 small islands in the Adriatic Sea and it’s always been separated from the mainland. Historic central Venice has no roads and no cars – only canals and more than 400 bridges. There are six districts: San Marco, Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Polo and Santa Croce. The Grand Canal runs in a giant “S” through Venice, a 2.5-mile passageway lined by grand palaces dating from the 12th through the 16th centuries. The real charm of Venice, however, is that there are hundreds of smaller canals and passageways ideal for meandering. The city is filled with music, art, architecture and history at every turn. While it is the perfect city for walking, it is also great (and especially known) for a private water taxi or gondola ride.

To get a true insider’s look at the city, book a walking and boat tour with The Roman Guy (www.theromanguy.com). You will have a local English-speaking guide meet you and walk you – without waiting in long lines – through St. Mark’s Basilica, which dates back to about 1063. Known as the “Church of Gold” for the gold-infused glass mosaics lining the interior, the exterior is equally impressive and dominates St. Mark’s Square, or Piazza San Marco as it’s known by locals. During your walking tour of St. Mark’s Square, your guide will also point out The Doge’s Palace, an ornate Gothic structure from the 14th century built on the foundations of a building dating back to 476 A.D. The museum there houses a variety of Italian exhibits. Your tour with The Roman Guy continues through Venice by boat. As your water taxi moves along the Grand Canal and through smaller canals, you will glide under the Rialto Bridge, past the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute, and glimpse one of the last remaining gondola workshops in Venice. This tour is also a great opportunity to ask your guide about places to eat and spots frequented by locals.

The Glass of Murano A half-day visit from Venice, Murano consists of seven small islands accessible by way of bridges and is world-renowned for its glass artisans. Venice’s public waterbuses (known as vaporetto) travel every few minutes to Murano. The trip takes about 30 minutes depending on where you get on the bus, which is like a ferry. You can purchase a multi-day city pass that includes transportation on the ferry, discounts for various museums, and Wi-Fi access at www.veneziaunica.it.

Although the glass is more expensive in Murano than in Venice, simply exploring the shops and factories is worth the trip. And while you can take an organized tour, you can also save by exploring on your own.

Lodging and Dining It’s no secret that Italy is a gourmand’s delight, and Venice lives up to that reputation. There are cafes everywhere and the campos – or city squares – are filled with culinary treasures. Try A Beccafico on the small, quiet Campo Santo Stefano. The Sicilian chef serves lunch and dinner daily and it’s especially idyllic if you sit outside to enjoy the square. Just be sure to make reservations for dinner. Finding a hotel that puts you in the midst of the Venetian treasures is important. Sina Hotels (www.sinahotels.com) offers two unique options in Venice, both on the Grand Canal. If you prefer a quaint, boutique stay, head to the 26-room Palazzo Sant’Angelo, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Book a traditional Venetian-style suite overlooking the Grand Canal. The breakfast room, though small, is welcoming. In the evening, head to the bar and be sure to start with a classic Italian Spritz, made with your choice of Aperol or Campari. The hotel is perfectly situated near the Rialto and Academia bridges and just steps from the Sant’Angelo Vaporetto stop. While Palazzo Sant’Angelo doesn’t have a restaurant, the concierge can arrange for a water taxi to meet you at the hotel’s private dock to take you to its sister property, Sina Centurion Palace, for dinner at Antinoo’s Lounge & Restaurant. There, the Venetian chef serves both traditional dishes and cutting-edge cuisine with flair. The canal-side terrace is ideal for warm months, or opt to sit inside the all-white restaurant. This modern take on traditional Venice is sure to add whimsy to your Venetian escape. At Antinoo’s, begin your meal with either a traditional peach bellini or try the Strawberry Rossini, both made tableside with Italian Prosecco and fresh puree. Be sure to try the local Scampi in Saor – shrimp in an onion and vinegar sour sauce – and the gnocchi with duck ragout, Granny Smith apples, pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Of course, the sommelier will pair everything with local wines for an unforgettable Italian feast. Sina Centurion Palace is housed in the historical Palazzo Genovese in one of two cloisters of the San Gregorio convent overlooking the San Marco area. The hotel has 50 rooms and suites, including the presidential suite with floor-to-ceiling Grand Canal views. Learn more about Venice at www.visit-venice-italy.com. So Scottsdale! July ‘18

Soup … in the summer? If it’s executive chef Miguel Ortiz’s seasonal gazpacho ($5 per cup or $7 per bowl) at Tonto Bar & Grill, then yes! Rather than starting with a tomato base – as many gazpachos do – Ortiz uses mellow, sweet golden beets. He enhances the sweetness by first roasting them in orange juice before cooling and pureeing them with aromatics, cucumbers, roasted red and poblano peppers, garlic, sherry vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil. The cucumbers add freshness, while the peppers and garlic provide earthiness and heat. As the concoction chills, Ortiz coats pistachios in egg whites, sugar and honey, baking them until crisp. He then pours the gazpacho into a chilled bowl and tops it with colorful microgreens, diced yellow beets, and the candied nuts for a honey-kissed, yet salty crunch. Tonto Bar & Grill, 5736 E. Cool down with Hotel Adeline’s Tropical Margarita

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY ELIZABETH MARIE

When Hotel Adeline opened in March, ownership promised the initial launch would be quickly followed by culinary and cocktail plans for the venue by summer. And they delivered. Over the past two months, the hotel has opened a swanky yet satisfying dinner spot called Selfmade, a fast-casual cafe concept dubbed Good & Proper, and a trendy pool bar known as Freestyle. They also have a speakeasy whiskey bar, aptly named Straight Up, accessible by a hidden telephone booth in the hotel. At Freestyle, the focus is on using fresh fruits and purees throughout the menu to fit the outdoor vibe. “Many of our Freestyle creations have proven so popular that we offer them throughout the property,” says Adam Reeder, the hotel’s director of food and beverage. Freestyle’s Tropical Margarita ($14) is one of them. “This perfect summer drink starts with Monte Alban Reposado, a silky tequila with pronounced fruit notes and a slightly peppery finish,” says Reeder, who combines it in a blender with fresh pineapple and lime juices before adding ice and blending. He then pours the icy cocktail into a stemless wine glass rimmed with salt and tops it with a float of Red Bull Yellow Edition, the tropical variation of the popular energy drink, which is meant to lend a pop of taste as well as bubbles on the nose. “We then slice fresh kiwi and strawberries and spear them along with a fresh blackberry and orange peel,” Reeder says. “It’s frosty, fresh and fruity all at once, and the perfect pairing with Scottsdale’s summer sun.” Hotel Adeline, 5101 N. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Helen Yung of Sweet Republic

Helen Yung is both the co-owner and designer of all things decadently delicious as executive ice cream “chef” at Sweet Republic.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

You are a native of Hong Kong. How did you make your way to America? I left home at 15 years old to attend boarding school in New Hampshire. I then stayed stateside to study finance and accounting in college. By the time I was in my early 20s, I was working in investment banking, learning quickly that to be successful you have to be hungry. I was … but for actual food. How did you make the switch to ice cream? In 2001, I met my eventual business partner Jan Wichayanuparp, who was also in finance. Foodie soul mates, we shared many great meals in New York while bemoaning our profession of choice. After 9/11 rocked us, Jan moved to Bangkok and I to Tokyo, both still in finance. I eventually enrolled at La Cordon Bleu in Australia. Once I graduated (and SARS hit Asia), we made our way to San Francisco, initially considering opening a bakery. That must get us to Arizona – and Sweet Republic? Almost! In 2007, while I was working in a San Francisco kitchen, we visited Jan’s sister, who had moved to the Valley with her husband. It was clearly a foodie town on the verge, but rife with franchises. We made the decision to do something small, focused and sweet in Scottsdale. Given the year-round weather, ice cream was a natural fit. We opened in May 2008. What makes your ice cream so special? We invest in good machinery. Our gelato machines cost twice as much as my car! We also use local ingredients and make our own base, which is labor-intensive but gives us a flavor all our own. What are some of your most unique flavors? Don’t miss out on coconut curry cashew, jalapeno avocado, sweet corn, or blue cheese and date options! Sweet Republic Scottsdale, 9160 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale; 480.248.6979; www.sweetrepublic.com.

End NEW IN TOWN

GONE COUNTRY

High & Rye Southern Kitchen & Bar opens on High Street

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

We could all use a little comfort these days. Or, perhaps even better, comfort food. Thanks to the newly opened High & Rye Southern Kitchen & Bar, there is now prime comfort food (think hush puppies and fried chicken) in our own backyard – but not from where you might think. “I grew up in a very rural part of Minnesota where, I kid you not, we even had a ‘Drive Your Tractor to School’ day,” says general manager Robert Gregg. “People don’t always realize this, but we country kids of the Midwest grew up with the same rich, flavorful foods as our cousins to the south in Louisiana or Georgia.” Gregg, along with executive chef Brice Niehaus, moved to the Valley earlier this year as part of a vision their parent company (aptly named Snowbird Hospitality) had to join Arizona’s ever-growing culinary scene. “The talent is here. The infrastructure is here. The world is starting to realize Arizona can cook – and more than just eggs on the sidewalk in summer,” says Gregg, whose team scouted the area for nearly a year before investing in a 14,000-square-foot-venue with an ample dog-friendly patio and private event space.

So Scottsdale! July ‘18

“We worked to re-imagine the venue to make it feel part Southern kitchen with barn doors and a clean, white color palette and part country patio, complete with strung-up lights and even a tree inside.” They spent even more time on the food than the stunning space makeover. The result is a two-page menu with noticeably elevated dishes including blue crab hush puppies with creole aioli, tempura-fried okra with remoulade, brisket, shrimp and grits and – an early favorite – the pastor plate with Southern country ham. “For those unfamiliar, we country types call this ham – which is straight from Tennessee and cured, smoked and aged for a year and a half – a ‘hillbilly prosciutto,’” says Gregg, noting it is a definite conversation starter along with the grilled pimento cheese and the unique drink program. Speaking of drinks, rather than simply hand guests a wine and beer menu (which they do have and it is sizeable), High & Rye makes things interactive with buildit-yourself versions of an Old-Fashioned, Manhattan or martini. “For these, we let the guest choose the base spirit and style – dry, classic or dirty, for example,” Gregg says. “We also have a cocktail program wherein all the signature items use spirits infused in-house with everything from strawberries and peaches to jalapenos and ginger.” They also boast a whiskey menu with more than 120 labels, primarily focused on bourbon and, of course, rye and have 20 beers on tap. Guests can enjoy live music Friday and Saturday from 8 to 11 p.m. and happy hour is offered Monday through Friday (3-6 p.m.), Sunday through Thursday (10 p.m.12 a.m.), and Saturday and Sunday (11 a.m.-4 p.m.). Brunch takes place Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. High & Rye Southern Kitchen & Bar, 5310 E. High St., Phoenix; 480.634.4143; www.highandryeaz.com.
