o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color
line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

After graduating from college, Dr. Jacoby attended Villanova University before receiving his doctorate of podiatric medicine at the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. He has participated in and taught thousands of hours of Continuing Medical Education over the past few decades. Additionally, he is a past president of the Arizona Podiatry Association and the Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons and co-authored the book “Sugar Crush: How to Reduce Inflammation, Reverse Nerve Damage, and Reclaim Good Health,” correlating a relationship between sugar and inflammation. He has utilized the surgical procedure successfully on thousands of patients and none of them have needed a subsequent amputation. He says, “Dr. Dellon perfected the Dellon technique and did the research back in the 80s. I adopted his technique and trained with him 20 years ago.” There have been 100,000 amputations annually due to diabetic neuropathy since the implementation of the Dellon procedure and Dr. Jacoby says that adds up to two million avoidable amputations. “It’s a national disgrace,” he says. It is his belief that the FDA pushes medications that don’t work, which in turn, create situations where amputations are done. The Dellon procedure utilizing stem cells could save thousands of people from avoidable amputations. “Stem cells are the fountain of youth and I’ve used them myself for a severe herniated disc,” finishes Dr. Jacoby. “I was back playing tennis in three days and haven’t needed another injection since.”

ASSISTANCE WITH INTEGRITY Anna Ortiz shares how she brings hope, provides health and transforms communities through Esperanca
Anna Ortiz grew up in Gadsden, a small border town outside of Yuma, Arizona, with a population of less than 1,000 people. “Living in a border town, both social justice – the idea of breaking barriers for social mobility – as well as community activism were concepts I saw in action from a young age,” Ortiz says.
Ortiz’s mother worked as a nurse, spending significant time volunteering at local health fairs to provide free medical services to those in need. Her father volunteered with AmeriCorps, mentoring youth, fighting poverty, sustaining national parks, and preparing for disasters.

Pulse UP CLOSE “I would often go with my dad to service projects, though I doubt I was all that helpful at age 7,” Ortiz laughs. “Jokes aside, however, I think my dad took me with him to ensure my head and heart were always working together, finding ways to be of service to others.” Once she graduated high school, Ortiz moved to the Valley in 2006 to attend Arizona State University, where she studied sociology while deciding on a career path. “After sophomore year, I took a summer job back down south for Chicanos Por La Causa, where my dad was also working at the time,” Ortiz says. “Chicanos Por La Causa provides direct service to those in need – today helping those who are Hispanic and otherwise – across Arizona, Nevada and Utah.” Once back in the Valley, Ortiz was delighted to learn there was a position open on the prevention team in Phoenix. For the next two years, Ortiz worked part time for the team, first offering after-school assistance to at-risk students, and then serving in an administrative and evaluative capacity over the entire program. “As I prepared to graduate in 2010, though I loved my work with Chicanos, I yearned to gain greater perspective, knowing all too well what a big world existed beyond the U.S. borders,” Ortiz says. “So, I applied for the Peace Corps.”
Spreading Her Wings By January 2011, Ortiz was on a plane to Panama to serve with the Peace Corps, where she lived and taught English for more than two years in the small, rural community of Las Margaritas. Part of the first Peace Corps English-teaching group in Panama, Ortiz was able to provide feedback and help shape the direction of the program moving forward. “While there, for the first time I also witnessed public health, which is the organized effort it takes to prevent disease, prolong life and promote wellness, in action,” says Ortiz, noting it encompasses everything from ensuring safe drinking water to preventing disease. Inspired, once back in Arizona in 2013, Ortiz earned a position at Esperanca. “Esperanca is a Valley-based nonprofit with two distinct functions,” Ortiz says. “The first gives children, adults and seniors from low-income Hispanic communities access to nutrition and health education, often partnering with school districts and the Maricopa County Department of Public Health on programming and outreach.” The other, according to Ortiz, is providing support on a global scale. “This side of the organization works within some of the poorest communities in the world, including those in Nicaragua, Bolivia, Peru, Mozambique and Ecuador, by coordinating volunteer surgical missions, ecological housing, disease prevention and education, food security, and access to clean water,” Ortiz says. Esperanca takes great pride in seeking out indigenous nonprofits that are already working to help their populations – those intimately in tune with the local culture, its people and their needs.

“Our mission is to expand on and enhance services to people, not to come in and dictate entirely new protocols and programming. It is about serving with integrity and serving with respect,” Ortiz says. When she began her journey at Esperanca in 2013, it was as a surgical coordinator. In this position, she was responsible for organizing volunteer teams of medical personnel from across the nation, including every aspect of their journey from flights and housing to meals and safety, not to mention ensuring they have critical supplies such as sutures and surgical instruments. “By 2015, I knew I needed to continue my education if I was going to be of more service to my team and the world at large,” says Ortiz, who left Esperanca to focus on earning her master’s degree in public health at the University of Arizona in Tucson. After graduating magna cum laude and serving a quick stint in Washington, D.C. to assist with a project for the World Health Organization, Ortiz made her way back to Esperanca in February 2018 for a full-time position overseeing the entire surgical program worldwide. By June 2018, her dedication led to her current role as an international program director. “Today, I oversee every aspect of our surgical trips, home improvement projects, and even our work to get clean water to those who are impoverished across Nicaragua, Bolivia, Peru, Mozambique and Ecuador,” Ortiz says. “And I proudly provide service every single day with a smile, both here and when abroad, just like my parents taught me.” To learn more or get involved with Esperanca either locally or abroad, visit www.esperanca.org.

Rodney Gentry: Fine hair results when each individual strand of hair has a small circumference, so that individual strands are not as large as those belonging to other people whose hair has a wider circumference.

Q: Do people with fine hair have particular problems as a result of the hair’s fineness? RG: Clients with fine hair tend to come to me with a similar range of complaints. While fine hair can look sleek and beautiful, it can be difficult to style. Many clients also wish for more volume to their hair.
Q: What other problems do people with fine hair face? RG: Fine hair can be more prone to damage than thick hair, so those with fine hair need to be careful about over-styling and the use of chemical treatments. Here at Rodney Gentry, we specialize in using products that are kind to the hair, and that nurture it at the same time as coloring it. I don’t believe that there is any place for harsh chemical treatments in a modern salon—they just aren’t necessary anymore. Enzyme-based products can color hair beautifully, and are so much kinder to it than the old peroxide-based treatments.
Q: How do you help them to overcome these issues? RG: There are plenty of options for those with fine hair. Highlights are one way to add volume and texture, and lowlights can work really well, too. It is really incredible what you can do with color. Clients always get a boost when they see how different their fine hair looks after it has undergone a color treatment. TIMELESS FUNCTIONALITY Hank Arens creates unique interior spaces while also giving back

Backed by 14 years of experience in interior design, Hank Arens, the owner and principal designer of Hank Arens Designs, specializes in creating timeless spaces that are functional and utilize long-lasting furnishings. “I have always been interested in the arts and knew I wanted to do something creative,” Arens says. “Interior design was a great fit, and I love what I do every day.” After completing a high-end residential interior design program at Scottsdale Community College, Arens worked for several years with the design team at Interior Studio Group. Having gained a wealth of knowledge working with architects, builders and homeowners, Arens set out to open his very own studio. In 2011, he launched his eponymous company near Old Town Scottsdale. A few years later, he opened a second studio in Flagstaff. Arens works alongside his senior designer, Laura Finsterwald, to create luxurious interiors for Arizona-based clients with a variety of styles and for projects spanning residential, commercial, new construction and remodels. From contemporary and transitional to urban modern and French farmhouse, Arens’ design repertoire is diverse. His commercial projects have included office buildings and retirement homes as well as remodeling preschool classrooms, which was no easy feat. “Meeting the needs of teachers and kids while understanding the limitations and expectations of the school and certifying board of preschools was tough,” Arens says. “Creating a timeless, functional and fun atmosphere was a big goal we achieved.” Although Arens isn’t a big fan of trends – his M.O. is to create spaces that stand the test of time – he predicts that taupes will replace shades of gray this spring and ethnic interiors will make a comeback. One of his go-to design elements? “Original art is always encouraged in my book,” he says, adding that a design tip he lives by is creating authentic interiors using quality materials, such as using real wood. When he isn’t designing, Arens spends much of his time volunteering at local nonprofits. He chaired the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Promise Ball auction in 2018, helping raise over $2 million dollars, and will be the gala’s chair this year. “Being involved in the nonprofit community in my spare time is so rewarding,” Arens says. “I hope to raise awareness in our community about the incredible work JDRF is doing so that we raise as much or more.”

Creativity and uniqueness are the keys to Sarrah Gaboury’s success in the event planning industry

Scottsdale native Sarrah Gaboury has an instinct for planning. “I’m a very creative person, and it has always felt natural for me to be in [the event planning] industry,” Gaboury says. When she was a child, Gaboury assisted her mother with designing homes, noting that she was drawn to the transformation involved in that process. As she got older, she began planning events for friends and family, from birthday parties to retirement parties and bridal showers. “I truly loved being able to create and design experiences for people, so when an opportunity opened up in the event industry, I jumped on it,” Gaboury shares. Gaboury holds a dual degree in supply chain management and marketing from Arizona State University, which prepared her for her current role as co-owner and principal planner and designer with Imoni Events. “It was the perfect way to combine my love for design with my logistics background,” she says. A full-service boutique planning and design company, Imoni Events has earned recognition in the form of both praise and awards. Gaboury and her team, which includes business partner Jennifer Thye, specialize in high-profile, highly unique events and celebrations. “We service a limited number of events each year. This allows us to focus on the clients we have and to make sure their experiences are amazing from start to finish.” A typical day for Gaboury varies depending on what event she’s working on and what stage of the process she’s in. For each event, she creates a custom design plan and a timeline to ensure perfect execution. “On my calendar, you will see a lot of floral appointments, linen appointments, rental appointments, design showings, timeline meetings, venue walk-throughs, tastings, and vendor or client meetings,” she says, noting that the client relationship is of the utmost importance. “I love meeting and building relationships with my clients that last a lifetime. I feel so grateful I get to help create memories that my clients will always cherish.” With all her passion for event planning, Gaboury still has time to enjoy the company of her husband and their families. Cooking, trying new restaurants, and working out fuel her private life. “And I can’t live without my passport,” she says.

Thurston Adams strives to maintain a classic, simple style that supports his career as an entrepreneur in the automotive industry. Currently, Adams is building technology for autonomous vehicles, and, inspired by the cars he designs, he appreciates individuality when it comes to style. “We’re all unique and should be thankful for individuality. I’m agnostic to fashion trends, but the most important thing is to feel comfortable in your own appearance,” Adams says. With a home base in Scottsdale, the world traveler attends many philanthropic events in the Valley where well-tailored suits are vital. He favors Hugo Boss for suits and swears by fitted Ted Baker dress shirts to complete his looks. Although he has a closet full of designer suits, his favorite is the one he wore on his wedding day. “I will always cherish that day, and every time I wear that suit, I will remember the feeling I had in that moment,” Adams says. When it comes to fashion advice, Adams advises to start with the shoes and work your way up. “Shoes dictate comfort, location and activity levels,” he says. “They are the last thing you put on, but the first thing you should think about.”
How do you transition from work to nighttime? When you’re an entrepreneur, work is your nightlife so there’s no difference. The best thing to do is be naturally comfortable in your environment at all times. And drink lots of water. That’s important in Arizona. How does your career influence your style? There are no days off in entrepreneurship, nor is there a dress code. That’s why people say entrepreneurship is a lifestyle. What would someone say if they peeked in your closet? They’d probably ask why there are suitcases next to my closet. It’s because I’m used to living out of suitcases.

What trends do you love right now? I love the “glam sneakers” with dresses and skirts trend. I think it’s a great look on most as it proves that dressy and comfy can be done simultaneously. What is your must-have item? I’m all about shoes. When wearing a great pair of shoes, I think a woman commands a room, is a boss babe, and truly feels like Cinderella. Those can be anything from stilettos to killer knee-high boots. If you could trade closets with someone, who would it be? I wouldn’t mind trading closets with Emma Watson. Sometimes, two people’s separate paths can lead to one amazing journey. This is the case for Kristen Aldridge and Seth Mattison, who are both successful in their own right. Kristen is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, TV host and anchor as well as the creator and producer of Project Luminary, a new original series in partnership with Entrepreneur and Facebook Watch. Seth is an internationally renowned business and leadership expert, author and speaker. Together, they have built Luminate (www.justluminate.com), an inspirational digital media platform that brings together luminaries, leaders and influencers from around the globe. On the site, visitors can be inspired by transformative digital content, including articles and videos, as well as find courses, assessments and live events. “Our vision was to work with leading brands, institutions, influencers and leaders to help facilitate a shift in consciousness around what work and leadership will mean in the 21st century,” Kristen says. “We want to highlight the role individuals can play in intentionally creating meaningful careers and companies that bring value to the world.” Both originally from Minnesota, they met when Kristen was assigned to interview Seth for a television segment. Their relationship gradually grew into a happy marriage and gave them the opportunity to cultivate successful careers while building Luminate together with a very specific vision. “We’ve intentionally focused on diligently pursuing our passion and purpose, becoming individuals of empathy and humility while relentlessly refining our own individual crafts,” Seth says. “The vision has always been to support each other’s individual pursuits while finding opportunities to build businesses and projects together.” Building a business together can often be a challenge, but both Seth and Kristen find it intensely rewarding. “It takes tremendous communication, honesty, and deep knowledge of oneself,” Kristen says. “You have to be open to understanding where your blind spots are. Angela and Bill Knutson have built a dynamic company blending their respective design and construction expertise. What began as two separate companies, Driftwood Living – which helped people find and fix up homes – and Uptown Construction, have now merged to become a full-service company specializing in architecture, interior design and construction. The family-run firm, Uptown Design + Build (on Instagram as @uptownphx) specializes in premium-built, luxury homes. Alongside their team, the couple does everything required to build beautiful custom homes including the architecture, floorplans, interior and exterior details, and material selections. The company even offers a fully licensed general contractor to manage the build through completion. The Knutsons’ business has been a labor of love for them both, but they are careful to remember that their business doesn’t always take priority. “In business, you need to make the best decisions, keeping emotion out of the equation,” Angela says. “When it comes to family, emotions play a much larger role. Keeping those identities separate requires a high tolerance to stress and actively making the effort. You always need to support each other and show appreciation to your partner. If each spouse feels empowered, the sky’s the limit!” Angela and Bill's journey began in high school, where they met and remained friends throughout college. It wasn’t until Bill needed a photographer to take shots of a house he was flipping that the sparks started to fly. Together, they have grown a successful business – and more importantly, built a family. “We both respect what the other partner brings to the table,” Bill says. “Angela’s design ability is at the leading edge of trends and mixed with classic details, creating clean and fresh spaces that will stand the test of time. I can create a house to meet a client’s needs out of a few basic guidelines. We don’t necessarily build in the exact same way as other builders. We try to be inventive, think outside the box, and we’re definitely not afraid of a challenge.”

After just a few moments with Amy and Jordan Demos, it’s clear that these two high school sweethearts are best friends and partners in many areas of life. The Demos met during their freshman year at Horizon High School and continued to date long distance throughout college. Married in 2009, the couple worked as elementary school teachers until 2013, when they took the leap into their shared dream job as photographers. They founded Amy & Jordan Photography (www.amyandjordan.com) to educate other photographers while providing business coaching. “With teaching, we spent years of our lives taking complicated concepts and making them fun and easy to learn. We wanted to bring that same approach to teaching adults,” Jordan says. “That’s the gap we saw. We created our business because we wanted to help raise up an army of welltrained, quality photographers all over the country who will love and serve people the way we do.” The duo has been featured in the pages of People and on national TV including The Martha Stewart Show and E!, but the pair didn’t pursue their business for fame and fortune. “The important thing [to us] is that, every day, we’re working as a team to solve problems and accomplish goals,” Amy says. “Our business has been one of the most unifying things about our marriage. It gives us so much in common.” And through their business, they help educate other aspiring photographers on how to accomplish their goals. The Demos offer business coaching as well as tips and tricks for other photographers, including a blog covering aspects of the photography industry, a shooting and editing course, recommended readings, suggested photography gear, and inspiration boards for future brides. “We committed to each other that, until our dying days, we would do everything in our power to maximize the amount of time we could spend together on this earth and bear witness to each other’s life,” Jordan says. “The first reason we do what we do is so that we can be together all day, every day.” So Scottsdale! Owners of Short Leash Hot Dogs & Rollover Doughnuts Phoenix-based Short Leash Hotdogs & Rollover Doughnuts (www.shortleashhotdogs.com) started as a small food truck, and it has since grown into a local phenomenon. Serving up gourmet hot dogs and decadent doughnuts, the two-fold culinary brand has made a name for itself in foodie circles. Now with a brick-and-mortar location in the Melrose District and another one in the Biltmore area, owners Kat and Brad Moore have their hands full. “We started Short Leash Hotdogs & Rollover Doughnuts as a husband-andwife team who wanted to try something different, and because we believe in doing the things you love in life, eating well, and surrounding yourself with people who make you happy,” Kat says. “Short Leash Hotdogs & Rollover Doughnuts combines these things and allow us each to work with the person who makes us happiest.” The idea of starting a food truck first came about in 2008. Both Kat's and Brad’s jobs were impacted by the banking crisis, and the recession was taking its toll on the couple. Brad had always wanted to start a food truck, and when he finally worked up the courage to mention it, Kat pushed to make it happen. The couple, who met at a YMCA in 1994, like to think they create a perfect balance with Brad as the trailblazer and Kat as the creator and grounding force behind the brand. “We trust each other’s strengths and balance each other’s weaknesses,” Brad says. “It’s hard to keep the lines clear when you work and live with each other, so we make time to be boyfriend/girlfriend and not just business partners. Everything we do and every decision we make, we do equally and with each other in mind. When you come from a place of love, trust and respect, everything else falls in place.”

David Dodge and Lauren Nguyen’s company CodaKid (www.codakid.com) has an inspiring mission: to train and equip the next generation of engineers, innovators and entrepreneurs, all in an effort to make the world a better place. Since 2016, CodaKid has taught nearly 10,000 students to code in 15 countries – and counting. The tech camps educate youth of all ages to create games, apps and Minecraft mods using real programming languages and professional tools. The husband-and-wife owners use their individual talents to make sure this mission is successful. “As far as our roles go, we each handle completely different things,” Lauren says. “David runs product development, marketing and sales, and he is more of the front-facing part of the company. I handle operations and finance, and make sure that the company delivers on our brand promise.” For most of his 20s, David developed video games for Sony PlayStation, Sega and computers in Silicon Valley. After business school, he and Lauren founded and ran a successful academic tutoring company for nearly 10 years. CodaKid merges these accomplishments in software development and education, and their collective years of experience have given David and Lauren some working wisdom to live by. “Be patient and kind with one another,” David says. “Entrepreneurship is stressful, and especially when things aren’t going well, it is easy to take it out on one another.” Building a business from the ground up requires hard work and flexibility, and this is truer than ever when your partner is also your business partner – but David and Lauren make it work. “I think one area that David and I have, perhaps, stood out is in our grit and determination,” Lauren says. “We’ve taken a lot of knocks over the last few years but have always found a way to learn from our mistakes, get back up, and keep going.”

Kinsey-Beth and Neal Kendrick have certainly seen their fair share of love connections. As the owners of Couple of Bartenders (www.coupleofbartenders.com), a mobile bartending service, they often get to see the first sparks served up alongside their signature concoctions. From weddings to catered events, Kinsey-Beth and Neal work side by side shaking up their version of specialty cocktails. “It all started one evening when we looked at each other and said, ‘Every event could use a couple of bartenders’ – and so it was born,” Kinsey-Beth says. “We also knew that we enjoyed business and truly wanted to create something that was not only going to complement our strengths but also could make a living for us and our family. We busted our butts all the way up to this day and beyond to create what it is today.” When booking Couple of Bartenders, customers can select from a variety of packages, all offering a certified “liquid caterer” who arrives in professional attire with all the tools needed to serve guests. Mixer packages and signature cocktail creations are also offered. As part of their business, the Kendricks also operate Tap Truck AZ, which is a 1966 Chevy panel truck with five taps down the side. From it, the couple serves up frosty beer, a selection of wine, kombucha, and cold-brew coffee – basically anything that can be served from a keg. “Even though we work together, we are also raising a family together and actually love being with each other,” KinseyBeth says. “It is super important to pat each other on the back. [Your business] can get overwhelming, and when you are in the thick of it, you sometimes don’t always see the positives, so take time to celebrate even the little moments and successes.”

Ana and Brian Wells Owners of urbAna
Ana and Brian Wells’ dream started with a journal. Brian’s grandmother kept one in the 1950s and ’60s, filled with pages about entertaining and party planning back in a time when it was an art form. Reading the entries sparked a fire in the couple, and, together, they opened a shop with the purpose of inspiring others to revive the “lost art of the dinner party.” Thus, urbAna (www. urbanashop.com) was born. “We wanted urbAna to be a unique boutique offering a curated collection of goods for you, your home, and your celebrations,” Ana says. “There is a story behind most of our products and the artisans who made them. We love sharing those stories with our customers.” At urbAna, the Wells have consolidated a sophisticated line of entertainment wares and accessories with an urban sensibility. Additionally, the store – which is located in Arcadia – offers furniture, dinnerware and flatware rentals as well as a boutique wedding registry where handwrapped gifts are delivered directly to soon-to-be married couples. “Brian and I adore entertaining, and we love being able to help others fulfill their vision for their own special events,” Ana says. One of the early bonds that connected the couple was a shared love for retail. Ana worked for Anthropologie for 10 years and always dreamed of being a shopkeeper while Brian spent years opening stores for Tommy Bahama before working for CBRE doing retail market research and analytics. Their individual talents and combined passion keep the business going. “urbAna only works because both of us are involved,” Brian says. “Ana focuses on operations of the shop, while I’m more of the visionary. While it’s exciting that urbAna has established its own identity as a brand, it wouldn’t be here without each of us contributing as partners.”

The National Kidney Foundation of Arizona’s annual fundraiser dances into town

On Feb. 22, the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona will present Dancing with the Stars Arizona: Fire & Ice at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa. The dazzling event will feature 17 notable people in the commuity in a quest to win over the judges and audience with their cha-chas, sambas and foxtrots. Each celebrity is paired with a professional ballroom dancer and equipped with elaborate choreography and several months of dance training. In a display of rhinestone-encrusted dresses and sequined suits, the recognizable personalities will take center stage to raise funds and awareness to help fight kidney disease throughout Arizona. The 13th annual event is patterned after ABC’s popular Dancing with the Stars show and is more of a entertainment showcase than a traditional charity gala. Throughout the evening of music and dancing, attendees can get in on the action by purchasing votes for their favorite dancer, waving signs, and tossing flowers onto the dance floor. The 2019 dance champions will be selected by both audience votes and a professionally trained panel of dance experts. The dancers will compete in two award categories: The Judges’ Choice Awards are based on technical merit and the People’s Choice Awards are based on total votes received. One man and woman in each category will walk away with a championship trophy. Chairing this year’s event is former Dancing with the Stars Arizona celebrity contestant Jamie Andersen, who first hit

Additionally, the event will honor Nancy Speltzer with the Guiding Star Award, which is given to a member of the Phoenix philanthropic community who has shown continued generosity and support for the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona. Spetzler and her husband, Dr. Robert Spetzler, danced in the inaugural Dancing with the Stars Arizona in 2007, and she will return with a special exhibition performance at this year’s celebration. This dazzling dance competition has raised more than $6 million over the years, providing the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona the means to continue lifesaving patient aid and organ donation advocacy programs throughout the state.

Each year, Colleen’s Dream Foundation hosts its annual golf tournament and gala (Feb. 22 and 23, respectively) to help raise funds for ovarian cancer reserch. Last year, the gala raised $200,000 from the live auction alone. These funds, combined with generous donations, enabled the foundation to award local research organization Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) a clinical trial for a new ovarian cancer drug treatment. “For some ovarian cancer fighters, these clinical trials are the only treatment options they have left and are their last hope of a normal life,” says Nicole Cundiff, CEO of Colleen’s Dream Foundation. INSTRUMENTS OF INSPIRATION Violins of Hope comes to the Valley

Music has the power to break down barriers, to unite us. And now through March 26, some of the most inspiring instruments are coming to Scottsdale. Known as the Violins of Hope (www.violinsofhopephoenix. com), the instruments are restored violins owned by musicians during the darkest of times: The Holocaust. “Violins of Hope tells the remarkable stories of violins played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. Today, these instruments serve not only as powerful reminders of an unimaginable experience, but also reinforce lessons of tolerance, inclusion and diversity,” says Rachel Hoffer of Violins of Hope Phoenix. The violins were first discovered by Israeli violinmaker Amnon Weinstein, who, as a young violinmaker more than 50 years ago, was asked to restore a particular violin. “The customer shared with Weinstein – who himself lost hundreds of relatives during the Holocaust – that the violin was played by a musician at Auschwitz as he marched to the gas chamber,” Hoffer says. “The musician was spared by the Nazis but forced to play at the camp afterward.” Weinstein was unable to restore that instrument, as the memory was too painful. But in 1996, Weinstein put out a worldwide call for violins from the Holocaust. “He sought out to restore every single one he could find as a way to reclaim his lost heritage and to give a voice to the victims.” The Violins of Hope have now been played in concert halls and exhibited in museums worldwide. They’ve been featured in books, print, film and television, with their stories and messages impacting thousands of individuals. “And now, thanks to the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix and other community partners, Violins of Hope is here,” Hoffer says. Over the next two months, the Violins of Hope program will feature more than two dozen events showcasing the role of the violin and music not only as an important aspect of Jewish culture but also as a symbol of strength and optimism in the face of adversity. Upcoming events at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts include: Arizona Musicfest Festival Orchestra Opening Concert with violinist Gil Shaham (Feb. 23, 8 p.m.), Violins of Hope exhibit with docent-led tours (Feb. 26-March 24), a tribute concert honoring Holocaust survivors and their families with special guest Amnon Weinstein; (March 19, 7:30 p.m.), a lecture and concert honoring Kurt Klein (March 20, 2 p.m.), an American officer who rescued 120 women from Nazi concentration camps. The Heard Museum, Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center, Grand Canyon University, Arizona State University, and Arizona Science Center – among others – will also host Violins of Hope events.

The genius of Genesis Motors’ luxury, entry-level sport sedan BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS: Base price: $34,900
Genesis Motors, the luxury car division of Korean auto giant Hyundai, started in 2015 as a stand-alone brand, primarily designed to compete against European luxury brands like Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, not unlike Toyota’s Lexus and Nissan’s Infiniti divisions. Launched with just two large executive-style vehicles – the G80 and G90 – Genesis is now adding the smaller, entry-level G70. It’s a supremely credible challenger to established German sport sedans like the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes C-Class. The G70 is available with either a 2.0-liter, 252-horsepower, inline four-cylinder engine or a 365-horsepower, twin-turbo V-6 with standard rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive as a $2,000 option. My test car was the V-6, whose power is delivered through an excellent eight-speed automatic transmission, running on 19-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer tires, which are standard on all trim levels. The G70 is gorgeously styled with muscular, taut lines; a short front overhang; a long wheelbase; and a pushed back cabin. Most noticeable is the large diamond-latticed grille flanked by thin LED running lamps.

Inside, attention to detail and luxurious materials belie the G70’s price tag. The front seats sport diamond-quilted Nappa leather and are supremely comfortable. The instruments are sleek and simple, providing a refreshing break from the comparatively flashy and overcomplicated infotainment systems that are often the go-to for many luxury brands. All switchgear and trim use real metal with an attractive look and feel. On the road, I fell in love with how the G70 performed. Power is instantaneous, with easy-to-activate launch control and a zero to 60 time of just 4.4 seconds. Drivers can select numerous drive modes with just a twist of a knob. The chassis is solid, refined, and, when pressed, meets or exceeds the high standards that reign in this class of cars. Plus, its huge Brembo brakes are among the best in the world. After a week of testing, my impression is that G70 completely lives up to its critical acclaim as the 2019 Motor Trend Car of the Year and excellent ratings from J.D. Power and Consumer Reports. It has everything competitors offer and more for thousands less. Now, it just has to be discovered by those who aren’t familiar with the Genesis badge.

At Sel Restaurant, chef Branden Levine aims to give guests an intimate fine dining experience featuring progressive, contemporary American cuisine. He offers a four-course, fixed-price menu nightly for $80 and a vegetarian option for $65, with supplements such as wine pairings ($70), foie gras ($35), caviar ($140), and dessert (prices vary). Guests may also order items a la carte. Menus change every few weeks, and each of the first three courses is a choice between two items. MY SWEET VALENTINE The Mix Up Bar mixes up something sweet in homage to the day of love

The Mix Up Bar is a cozy cocktail spot nestled inside the iconic Royal Palms Resort and Spa, beloved by resort guests and locals alike. “Our locally inspired drink menu changes regularly to reflect the seasons,” says Tyler Strasser, mixologist at Mix Up. “Each February, the menu reflects both the impending emergence of spring and, of course, Valentine’s Day.” Among Mix Up’s signature February offerings is My Sweet Valentine ($15). It starts with Ketel One Citroen Vodka, which is made by infusing vodka with four varieties of lemons and two types of limes. “We then add housemade raspberry shrub to the vodka,” Strasser says. “The shrub is made by combining fresh raspberries with sugar and letting them sit for about four hours, then adding vinegar and mashing until it turns into a balanced syrup – or shrub – with bright tartness.” Mix Up also uses its own in-house orgeat syrup in the cocktail. It’s made by heating almonds with cinnamon sticks, baking spices and lime juice on a stovetop, then hitting it with a blast of sugar at the end. “Finally, we squeeze some fresh lime juice into the shaker before shaking with ice and double straining into a coupe glass,” Strasser says. “It’s garnished with a lemon twist and Peychaud’s Bitters, which we use to draw a heart atop the cocktail.” Much like love itself, My Sweet Valentine is equal parts nutty, sweet and tart all at the same time. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Anthony Apolinar of Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse

Anthony Apolinar is the executive chef of the recently opened Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse, which offers Certified Angus Beef specialty-cut steaks and American comfort food in a relaxed environment.
Tell us how your nana got you into cooking. When I was six, I wanted to eat eggs and chorizo every single day. I am not exaggerating. So, my grandmother – my nana – brought me into her kitchen and told me if I really wanted them every single day, then I needed to learn how to make them myself. Once I got my fill of chorizo and eggs, she continued to teach me how to cook throughout my youth. But being a chef wasn’t in your initial plan? Professional baseball was the initial plan, until football got in the way. I played catcher at Cesar Chavez High School. To stay in shape in the offseason, I took up football. After multiple football-related injuries to my right knee, I was told if I kept up either sport, I wouldn’t be able to walk by the time I was 30. How did you transition into the kitchen? In 2003, with no formal training outside of my nana, I enrolled at Scottsdale Culinary Institute. Diploma in hand in 2005, I paid my dues everywhere from The White Chocolate Grill and The Herb Box to Tonto Bar & Grill and Culinary Dropout before joining Keeler Hospitality Group at Market Street Kitchen in 2017. Still with their team, I took on the challenge of developing the menu for Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse earlier this year. Tell us about your menu. Starters include shareable lobster macaroni and cheese as well as crab cakes and mussels. There are some definite entree standouts, especially our double bone-in pork chops, seared lamb loin chops, and braised short ribs. Specialty sides include blue cheese creamed spinach, white cheddar mashed potatoes, and loaded hash browns. Any foods you personally don’t like? I try to keep an open mind, but I hate fennel. Desserts can be traced to ancient civilizations thousands of years ago, albeit back then in the form of fruits and honey. When sugarcane began making its way across the globe more than 1,500 years ago, using it in desserts became a symbol of wealth and status, especially to royalty. Though the first apple pie recipe was published in the 1300s, it wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution in the 1700s and 1800s that desserts were able to be mass-produced, preserved and canned for Americans-at-large to enjoy. At The Emerald, a new women-only coworking space in south Scottsdale, sun streams through the oversized windows as the chic space buzzes with inspiration and a girl boss attitude. The 4,200-square-foot workspace, designed by the creative team of ladies behind The LifeStyled Company, was thoughtfully curated to empower women and encourage innovation around every corner. A neon green “Treat Yo’Self” sign glows against a backdrop of shiny subway tiles, and pictures of powerful females including Ellen DeGeneres, Beyonce, Princess Diana, and even Miss Piggy are displayed throughout the entry. Midcentury modern furniture in hues of blush and green dots the floor amid exposed brick and pleasing accessories. As the leading ladies behind The Emerald, Ashlyn Rowe and Abby Leadon are the co-founders and visionaries of the brand. With uniquely different backgrounds ranging from years in the corporate fashion and beauty industries to the technical start-up world, the friends knew they wanted to create a place for women to connect and foster their entrepreneurial dreams together.

“I was inspired to start The Emerald after reading an article in ForbesWomen about a similar concept in New York,” Rowe says. “Our long-term goal is to take The Emerald national and open locations in other metropolitan cities across the country to discover other multifaceted ‘gems’ around the nation.” Located within The Quad at 64th Street and Thomas Road, The Emerald is part of a women-only coworking trend that’s taking root across the nation. For a monthly fee (from $95 to $450), women can purchase a membership that grants them use of the shared space during the day and access to workshops, events and private rental space during off-hours. The open seating concept encourages members to connect between calls or while taking a break from e-mails and spreadsheets. Dedicated desks and conference rooms are available as needed, as well as women-approved necessities like flamingo wallpapered bathrooms, Drybar dry shampoo, and SkinnyPop popcorn. Wi-Fi, printing, a quiet room, a coffee bar and lounge, weekly events, and basic office provisions are included with every membership. “In Arizona, woman-owned businesses are growing at exponential rates, so we wanted to create a place for women to grow, connect and be inspired,” Leadon shares. “Through opening The Emerald, we have met so many incredibly talented women in our community from all walks of life and from different areas of expertise.
