8 great events attend Jo Paris Salon & Spa stylists have a creative flare and passion for helping clients achieve looks they never thought they could have. The best part of their job is when they do hair extensions on someone for the first time., Its very rewarding. Sometimes their clients cry tears of joy and amazement, it can be very emotional. Without hair extensions, they would never be able to achieve the look they’ve always dreamed about having. they love being able to help someone reflect their inner beauty. Are hair extensions high maintenance? Once hair extensions are applied, your only responsibility is to brush your hair daily. Home care requires nothing special; extensions can actually be more low maintenance than most people think. Use of your everyday products, blow-driers and irons are perfectly fine. Three to six months is the average amount of time to wear these extensions before reapplying them, due to hair growth. Do hair extensions break your hair? Hair extensions can be great for your hair. With proper application and removal, clients find that their hair is actually growing, rather than breaking. Breakage comes either from the type of bond used or the individual who is applying them. A stylist’s patience is paramount when applying and removing extensions. That’s the potential for most breakage. The bond must be 100 percent keratin, a natural protein from which human hair is made of. Very few companies actually use keratin; many use glue or tape, which suffocates and breaks the hair. Do hair extensions look fake? Many stylists use synthetic hair, bulky wefts or strips, which look overly shiny and stiff like a wig. We use only 100% human hair, the best quality and takes longer to get, but lasts up to four years. All strands are small, individual pieces so they move freely, like your own hair. With the application technique they use, the extensions are extremely discrete. Blending is critical and strand placement is an artistic process that requires special training. Jo Paris stylists have received additional training to develop the cutting and blending techniques needed to achieve this natural overall look. Call for a complimentary consultation to see what style and length works best for you!

ebruary tends to conjure all the feels, doesn’t it? It’s a month focused on love, and I believe it’s a time in which we’re reminded that there is a lot to love about living in Scottsdale. Event season is underway, the weather is warming and it seems new places to explore and festivals to attend are popping up faster than you can say, “I love you.” We’ve got plenty of ways for you to toast a special someone, from a celebratory Champagne cocktail (page 83) to wines that woo (page 122), plus romantic restaurants in which to rendezvous (page 76). And, if a chic fashion statement is what you’re after, we’ve so got you covered for any amorous occasion that may arise (pages 86, 90 and 98). It goes without saying that February is also host to major sporting events; we’ve got the scoop on new happenings at the Phoenix Open (page 72), as well as five places to keep tabs on the Super Bowl (page 64). On our cover is Bizzie Gold (page 44), a trainer to the stars who is also the founder of yoga’s funkier half, BUTI Yoga, as well as a soon-toopen women’s social club that focuses on bringing together like-minded women for inspired professional and personal growth. And speaking of inspiration, check out our feature on eight extraordinary executives (page 52) who share with us their wisdom, know-how and expertise about what it takes to effectively lead. I was certainly inspired by them and my hope is that you are too. In the pages that follow, may you find many ways in which to enjoy our great city and celebrate those you love, including yourself (you deserve it!). All the best, Chelsea Young Editor-in-Chief chelsea@richmanmediagroup.com

contributors What’s your idea of a romantic day in Scottsdale and where would you spend your ideal Valentine’s?

Cantabrica Estates

Answer: “Valentine’s Day weekend is both my husband’s birthday weekend and smack dab in the middle “busy season” for folks in accounting – like him. I actually don’t think we’ve ever done “Valentine’s Day” during Valentine’s Day weekend as a result. I usually spend the holiday taking my mom to a fabulous dinner or out for wine, to be honest! But don’t feel bad for me; instead, the hubby and I often plan a fun long weekend to Sonoma, Temecula, Santa Barbara or even Sedona in April to make up for it.

very day, it seems we hear stories about various diseases such as breast cancer, ALS and Parkinson’s. However, Scottsdale resident, entrepreneur and advocate Sharane Dorrah is making it her goal to make sure that others also learn about something affecting more and more people nationwide every year: Lyme disease. Lyme disease is an infection caused by being bitten by an infected tick, and, at first, typical symptoms are a flu-like – fever, chills, sweats, muscle aches, fatigue, nausea and joint pain. If gone unnoticed and left untreated, the bacteria from the bite can spread to other areas of the body, causing severe and sometimes irreversible damage to organs and the nervous system.

up close According to the CDC, every year nearly 300,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported. Yet, the agency goes on to say that this number doesn’t reflect every case that is diagnosed in the United States each year because only a fraction of the illnesses are reported. Dorrah was diagnosed with Lyme disease nearly three years ago after two years of trying to figure out just exactly what was wrong with her. During that time, she visited nationally renowned medical facilities and numerous doctors, including neurologists and cardiologists. “I went from running a business and being a fully active, type A person to being someone who was sleeping 17 hours a day, being in excruciating pain, in and out of the emergency room and being so terrified of not even waking up the next day because of heart and lung irregularities. I had no idea what was going on,” Dorrah says. Specialist after specialist gave Dorrah different diagnoses, everything from just being over-stressed to food allergies and other infections until one doctor finally had her blood work sent to a lab in California that tests specifically for Lyme disease – and that is when her world and life changed. “I am not 100 percent; it’s still a fight every day, but I’m better and I’m getting there,” she says. “Like many people with chronic Lyme, I didn’t know anything about it. It was a very long diagnostic process with no cure. And the goal of remission is a long road that is not fully supported by insurance companies or the medical community, so I am working to help others who are in that position.”

Making a Difference And that is exactly what Dorrah has committed her life to doing – being an advocate for those who may not have a voice or know what to say. Dorrah is using what she’s learned over the last few years about the disease and turning it into something positive; her inner entrepreneur has created a new clothing line called Peskys. Treated with invisible and odorless insect repellant, the line will offer high-quality, fashionforward active apparel for women so they can enjoy the outdoors without worrying

about things like mosquitoes, ticks and other little bugs. Dorrah says she is using this line as her voice and a way to raise awareness of Lyme. “I feel like me being here is a gift and I want to pay it forward,” she says. “The Lyme community has been unrecognized for a long time, and I am just one voice in a choir of voices trying to raise awareness and create change.” When Dorrah isn’t working on launching her new clothing line, she spends time helping others deal with their Lyme diagnoses. She feels this is where her passion and time need to be focused – giving back to the community that has been there to support her. “Everybody who goes through something so life-changing and deep feels like they need a focus when they come out the other side. I feel so passionate about this because the disease is so misunderstood and unknown, yet it is so pervasive. Through education and awareness by my brand, I want to be able to help people avoid having to have my experience with Lyme,” she says. “If Lyme disease is caught quickly, then you can take antibiotics and move on with life. However, if it is missed or goes untreated, the infection goes systematic. A proven cure for chronic Lyme is not available, and there is not one standardized treatment plan. Most treatment options are expensive and not covered by

insurance. This can have people feeling confused and alone.” To this date, Dorrah does not know how she contracted Lyme disease. Looking back, she doesn’t recall a time where she was bit by a tick or ever pulling a tick off herself. While she now knows that other bugs can carry it, she really isn’t looking back to the how’s and why’s of what happened and is more looking forward to helping others. “Lyme forced me to stop, hit the reset button on life and start over,” Dorrah says. “I just recently started working full-time again, and dealing with my Lyme is still a very big part of my daily life. I spend a fair amount of time speaking with people who have been recently diagnosed with Lyme as well of those that have been fighting for years and are looking for hope.” For Dorrah, rather than being angry at missed diagnoses and time, she is staying focused on how she can help people locally and immediately, preventing further spread and creating a greater awareness for the masses about Lyme disease’s causes, effects and what can be done about it. For more information on Dorrah’s upcoming clothing line (set to launch in late spring), you can find details on Dorrah’s Instagram, peskys_apparel. For more information on Lyme, visit www.ilads.org.

QUEEN OF SPEED

Racer Valerie Thompson takes her passion for racing on the road BY GRETCHEN PAHIA

he National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) is about to get a taste of local rider Valerie Thompson, a seven-time land speed record holder and often referred to as “America’s Queen of Speed.” She’s gearing up to take her talents on the bike for a full season of NHRA drag racing to see just how far she can get things moving on the track. “I’m in a great time in my life,” Thompson says. “This month we’ll be doing a new test session on the bike [an NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle] and then preparing for the NHRA Gator Nationals in March.” For Thompson, the goal is simple: just race. Thompson will soon begin traveling for racing nearly full-time and is excited for the journey ahead. “The ultimate goal with NHRA is to place in the top 10 for starters and race my heart out. I would love to win a race, come out and separate myself from my competitors.” Thompson says one of the biggest challenges for her will be learning how to discipline herself with both race circuits – NHRA and land speed racing. She will continue to do land speed racing all while chasing her NHRA goals. Off the track, Thompson is involved in other motorized pursuits, as a vehicle presenter at Barrett-Jackson and Metro Auto Auctions. To learn more about Thompson, visit www.valeriethompsonracing.com.

What are some of your inspirations on and off the road? I draw inspiration from so many sources; it’s a hard question to answer. If I had to pick a word that describes both my personal and professional inspirations, I’d have to say “passion.” I’m inspired by people who have a passion for doing things the best they can do. If you weren’t racing, what do you see yourself doing? I’ve always dreamed of becoming an Olympic figure skater. I’d love to perform the freestyle movements of jumps, spins and lifts, all in a graceful manner. I get goosebumps just watching it. What is your favorite movie and/or television show about racing? I have two picks that quickly come to mind. My all-time favorite is easily “The World’s Fastest Indian,” the story of New Zealander Bert Munro who set a land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1967 on his modified Indian motorcycle. The other one is a documentary called “Why We Ride,” which I got to be a part of a couple of years ago. It provides great insight into the passion of motorcycle racers and the soul of their machines. Injexts: A New Concept for Youth on Demand A

ging is something we all do – but unfortunately, aging gracefully is not. While there are those who can naturally look much younger than their years, some (okay, most) of us will need some gentle assistance along the way. And that’s where Injexts – a revolutionary new injection bar, founded by Dr. Ashleigh Ortega – comes in. Dr. Ortega began her career in the medical field in 1999, as a registered nurse at Yale. From there, she relocated to Scottsdale, where she earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Arizona State University, one of the foremost DNP programs in the country. But behind her impressive credentials is a regular person – a busy, employed mom of three children under ten, disheartened like the rest of us by the signs of aging reflected in her mirror. When she began to witness her own aging process, she took a heavy interest in skincare and antiaging procedures. “As I started to take care of myself, I realized it was something I was really interested in,” Dr. Ortega says. As a working mother juggling a demanding schedule, Dr. Ortega was frustrated by the inconvenience of scheduling and waiting for simple procedures at plastic surgeons’ offices. Yet she was wary of medspas, where there’s often no rapport between patient and doctor, and sometimes a lack of qualifications. Thus, she conceived the idea for Injexts: an on-demand injectable practice where cli-

ents could easily schedule their own appointments with a few clicks, receiving premium services by a medical professional in a quick, convenient manner. Injexts, which celebrated its grand opening in January of this year, is a standout in its field. Injectables are its sole focus, which has allowed Dr. Ortega to hone her skills to sharp perfection. Injexts’ clients can rest assured that they’re in the experienced hands of a world-class healthcare provider, certified in advanced injectables by the prestigious National Laser Institute. Injexts offers Botox and fillers to minimize lines and wrinkles, and vitamin B12 which can improve energy, metabolism, and sleep. Each client is given an individualized consultation beforehand in order to determine their specific needs, and a post-treatment assessment ensures that the desired results have been achieved. Injexts also offers exceptional antiaging skincare from RODAN+FIELDS, a product line that Dr. Ortega handpicked based on the company’s extensive research. “There is true science behind their products,” she attests. With an unparalleled ease of access, Injexts makes it easy to schedule an appointment twenty-four hours a day via its website, smartphone app, or Facebook page – and its central location at the corner of Scottsdale and Shea makes getting in and out a breeze. “The concept of Injexts is to be

Injexts—a revolutionary new injection bar, an on-demand injectable practice where clients could easily schedule their own appointments with a few clicks

available to busy people who want to book an appointment very quickly, and to provide specialized services by professionals without the hassle of the waiting room,” says Dr. Ortega. “The convenience is amazing.” For Dr. Ortega, each day at Injexts is a dream come true. “I love helping people age at a rate they’re comfortable with,” she says. And her patients love the simple, expedient approach to antiaging that Injexts provides: it’s youth on demand.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE CUP OF JOE Craig Matthew of Altitude Coffee Lab is a musical mastermind BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

raig Matthew has an impressive resume. He is a former professional golfer, a FORD/Robert Black Agency model, a KWSS (93.9 FM) and Radio Phoenix co-host to radio show, “The Venus Vault Show,” and the co-owner of Scottsdale’s Altitude Coffee Lab (www. altitudecoffeelab.com). As if his list of achievements isn’t wow-worthy enough, he is also a musician. “I started playing guitar and piano at a fairly young age and it quickly became a passion,” he says. “It’s hard to really put into words how certain musical moments can grab hold of you.” When he isn’t at Altitude, Matthew is working with the musical talents at AfterMaster Audio Labs in Los Angeles. “I met Larry Rykman, [the] CEO of AfterMaster, at Altitude and in incredible turn of fate he invited me to record a song at his studio in L.A.” Since working with the AfterMaster’s team, Matthew has been busy writing and producing songs for his record, which he plans to release this year. So, next time you grab a cup of joe at Altitude, say hi to Matthew – a man of many talents and creative endeavors.

Etc.

Do you like having local musicians come into Altitude and play live for your customers? Yes! Though we are doing less music now, we have had quite a few very good players. My business partner, Paul Musikanth, and I have worked hard to create a good atmosphere at Altitude and I believe it caters well to live music. Do you play live anywhere around the Valley? I’ve put most of my musical energy into writing recently because I’m trying to take full advantage of the recording opportunity I have in L.A. I am, however, starting to put together a band and hope to play more live shows soon. Where do you gain your musical inspiration from? My songs are always related to emotions that I’ve felt during certain experiences, but the words rarely describe those experiences directly. I suppose there’s a certain level of self-protection in the way I go about it, but there is a great deal of feeling that goes into my writing. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Midwestern native from the south suburbs of Chicago, David Racich epitomizes the definition of an entrepreneur. Along with being the president and CEO of Brokers Alliance, Inc. (www.brokersalliance.com), Racich has a handful of other successful businesses that bear his signature. This progressive leader jokingly admits that Nespresso keeps him on top of all his business ventures. “The diversity of each day keeps me on my toes and [I’m] always excited to see what’s around the next corner,” he adds. Racich’s innovative work ethic and vivacious personality is reflected in his daily ensembles. “I decided very early in my career that I always wanted to put my best foot forward in the office, and for me, that meant a suit and tie every day.” Racich keeps his style fun and vibrant with the addition of bright colors, unique patterns, fun socks and a bold pocket square, and he loves unique accessories like belts, watches and shoes. Business second, family first is this man’s motto. As the father of two little ones, Racich lets his children complete his look by selecting which cuff links he will don each day. “I wear everything from ladybugs to turtles [cuff links],” he smiles.

Where do you get your fashion inspiration from? Anywhere, really! I love perusing Touch of Modern for unique accents to what I’m wearing. I’m all about statement pieces in all aspects of life from art to decor to my clothes. What is one thing in your closet you cannot live without? Shoe polish … my kids tend to play with it and it often dries out. When you have this sense of despair due to your shoe polish drying up, you know it’s an item you cannot live without. You are a family man! How many children do you have? My wife, Ashley, and I have two kids who are 17 months apart. Our son, Bennett, is 4 ½ and our daughter, Emerson, was born on my birthday three years ago.

style chameleon may be how one would describe custom dress designer and stylist Donna Berry. “My look is different all the time. I mix the feminine with urban, layer a lot and combine things that wouldn’t necessarily go together,” Berry says. After years of a career as a civil litigator, she left law to pursue her passion in the design program at FIDM in Los Angeles. After working at design houses like Monique Lhuillier, Berry set her sights on custom design, allowing her a personal artistic collaboration with clients. When it comes to her professional style, Berry says things are simple and a bit different than her personal look. “I need to be comfortable. I wear a lot of pants due to moving around and measuring clients. I tend to have more masculine, loose fitting clothing when I’m working but comfort is the most important factor.” The mom of twin boys says that she is usually dressed in an outfit, ready to go. “I almost am never in workout clothes or yoga pants unless, of course, I am at the gym. I may wear a lot of jeans or pants, but I also do ultra-feminine dresses and work them with layers and accessories.” For more information on Berry and her custom bridal and evening gowns, visit www.donnaberrydesigns.com.

Custom gown designer Donna Berry rocks the ready-for-work look BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

What was working at Monique Lhuillier like? Working at Monique was incredible! It was a completely creative environment, plus I was fortunate to work with many celebrities, some of whom were dressing for major events like the Oscars! Do you design anything other than custom dresses? I’ve created everything from suits to capes, but the majority of my clients are dressing for very special events, which tend to be formal and maybe once-in-a-lifetime, so my client is often looking for a show-stopping, artful piece designed and cultivated with only her in mind. What wedding dress trends do you see for 2016? Sheer will continue to be big and so will dresses with a lot of shine – ornately beaded gowns with the jewelry built-in, so to speak. Also, many brides will opt for subtly hued gowns, especially in blush.

Local celebrity trainer and BUTI Yoga founder Bizzie Gold is opening a new social club to foster community among like-minded women

I N S P I R E D T

here is an increasingly expanding movement of personal growth and transformation among women, founded in inspired action, inner strength and empowerment. For celebrity trainer and Scottsdale resident Bizzie Gold these traits are a way of life. Gold has found a way to not only strive for these goals on a daily basis but also a few ways in which to share her knowledge with other women. Gold is the creator of BUTI Yoga (www.butiyoga.com), which has quickly become a nationally recognized fitness method. BUTI Yoga workouts focus on transforming your body and soul with a mix of cardio, tribal dance, primal movement and conditioning, all combined into a practice of yoga that seeks to make women feel alive and powerful.

Gold says that while she is very glad with where BUTI Yoga is today, it all started with a very traumatic experience. “I had a traumatic birth with my first daughter,” she says. “It was a home birthing experience in Hawaii where everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong. She was not breathing and my then husband, her father, was able to revive her, but we were both taken by helicopter to the closest hospital where we learned she had brain damage.” From that point on, Gold says that her normal way teaching of yoga, and life in general, became pretty robotic. After a healing session one night, Gold went in to teach her class and something new was created, something like she’d never done before. It was out of that atypical class that BUTI Yoga was eventually created. Gold moved her family to California, and with a previous background in public relations, she was able to spread the word about her new type of yoga and personal training skills. Gold quickly became well known in the fitness world, with appearances on television shows such as “The Today Show” and “Dr. Oz.” She also created a rolodex of celebrity clients including Julia Roberts, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Pink, just to name a few.

A New Venture It was the growth of her celebrity training and BUTI Yoga that led Gold to the realization that there are many other women searching for empowerment and strength, both personally and professionally. It was this realization that brought Gold to Scottsdale, where there is a solid BUTI Yoga following, and to her new business venture: a social club for women. This social club, B Tribe Scottsdale, is set to open its doors in April to members in the Valley. The B Tribe name came from an already existing network available to BUTI Yoga members, and, for Gold, it was an easy transition from the online BUTI Yoga community of support to the physical support for women. “We have this great online community, and in the forum, women could be themselves and feel accepted without feeling like they couldn’t embrace their own true reality,” Gold says. “It became very clear that if we focused on the community aspect of it and intertwined the

workouts and other benefits of personal growth, the social club would be the perfect place to bring these like-minded women together.” The B Tribe Social Club will be a place where women with common goals can enjoy one another’s company and be free to be themselves in a public setting. And there will be a lot of systems built into the club for the women to enjoy. “We will always have a social club director on the floor so they can make meaningful introductions between members,” adds Gold, which is a vital piece of the social club in her mind. “This is a great place for women to network, make positive connections or simply just come to relax and gather themselves in a comfortable environment.”

The Details on B Tribe As for the club itself, it is 7,000 square feet of space and has a paleo restaurant for enjoying healthy dining and a collaborative work space. The entire space has Wi-Fi, and there is a library area with floor-toceiling bookshelves and tables, chairs and areas for women to work. There are also library desks in a more private area for those wishing to get some work done with some additional peace and quiet. “Everything is built to facilitate an inspiring working environment,” Gold says. Outside of the working space, there is a large projector screen and comfortable seating area for movie screenings and TGIT (Thank Goodness It’s Thursday) television-viewing parties for women who want to watch guilty pleasure shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy.” On Friday’s, there is an open member dance party, giving women a chance to enjoy music and fun without the pressure of going to a nightclub. Members also have access to one of the two yoga studios (one heated and one at room temperature), a 12-person sauna, a relaxation room, a luxury locker room and showers. Gold says there is something for all of their members to do when they walk through the doors, whether they want to work, network, socialize or just relax. “We’ve created an environment where women want to come, where they want to be and where they can be themselves. It was very important to me to make this a reality.” SO SCOTTSDALE! |

So, what does membership entail? There are three different levels of membership. The first level gives you access to the yoga studios and locker room only and you can pay for certain other events per diem. The other two levels include the other areas of the club and social events. The highest level of membership allows members to bring a guest with them for free to see what B Tribe is all about. Gold also offers a free seven-day trial, with access to the club and specific events, for those interested in seeing if B Tribe is a good fit.

What the Future Holds In true form of anyone who is part of B Tribe, Gold is thinking big picture when it comes to expanding; the Valley is the first of a few places Gold intends to launch the social club. Gold has openings slated for New York City’s Meatpacking District and also in West Hollywood, two fabulous locations for helping women be the best they can be. “I want to bring about the sisterhood that I’ve been seeing more in life, that positive vibe that helps women thrive,” she says. “These social clubs will be a place where women can embrace one another, help one another out and do it all in a luxury environment.” The social club already has some members waiting for the anticipated opening. They were hand-selected from the directors and personally invited to the club. Those who wished to join were also given three keys to invite other women they thought would be a great addition to B Tribe. The club membership is growing even before the doors officially open, and now the club is looking for more women to jump on board. Interested in joining? You can either get a referral from a current member or fill out an application online. According to Gold, “The applications aren’t really to see if we can accept you or not. It simply gives the board a better look about whether or not your background and drive meet our goals. We want to be sure that we have something to offer all our members, and that this is the right place for them.” To get further information about B Tribe Social Club’s offerings and applying for a membership yourself, visit www.btribesocialclub.com. The experience behind shopping for that elusive, perfect mattress is often compared to buying a car and it is an experience that two young Valley entrepreneurs wanted to change. JT Marino and Daehee Park, good friends from their days at Penn State University, wanted to start up a business of their own but were not sure which direction to take. After college, both found themselves working at a software startup in Palo Alto, California, wondering what their next steps would be. That was when a trip to a local mattress shop changed everything for Marino and Park. “My wife and I were shopping for a new mattress and we ended up going to three stores and it was a nightmare,” Marino says. “It was a lot of gimmicks, sales tactics and we ended up buying something based on price. After several months of trying it out, we still didn’t like it and the whole thing was just one big mistake, a big nightmare.” For Marino, that was the seed for the big idea behind Tuft & Needle, which today has grown to become one of the nation’s biggest up and coming mattress companies. Their mission? To provide a quality mattress at a fair price. Their prices range from $350-$750 and each mattress comes with a 10 year warranty. Both Marino and Park weren’t exactly sure where to start with Tuft & Needle, but knew cusomers were the priority. “In our previous jobs, we worked to collect a lot of feedback from our customers and we knew that would be vital to this process as well,” Marino says. The hardest part was not only trying to figure out how to make a mattress, something neither of them had experience in, but also finding a manufacturer willing to produce the product. Their mattresses are made from their own Adaptive Foam, which is poured and cut in America.

“No one really wanted to work with us. We knocked on a lot of doors and got a lot of no’s. However, it is those few companies that took a chance on us, those who said yes, who believed in our vision. Those are the good guys and those are the companies still sticking with us today,” Marino explains. Tuft & Needle officially opened in 2013, despite the families of both men being skeptical about them going into a business they knew very little about. “They thought we were totally crazy. The mattress business is very unsexy and boring and there were times we were unsure as well,” Marino says. “However, now, things are great, everyone is supportive and are big fans.” When it was first created, Tuft & Needle primarily sold the products online and eventually listed it on Amazon, mainly for the reviews. However, word of the product quickly spread like wildfire and it became the highest rated mattress on Amazon and, within months, the highest rated piece of furniture on the site. The SO SCOTTSDALE! |

mattress then took on a life of its own on the website Consumer Reports, where the mattress was once rated as the only “best buy” for the site during a period of time. Since their start, several other similar companies have popped up, but what separates Tuft & Needle from the competition is that the foundation of the business came from their own funding and the company has been growing from those profits ever since. “There has been quite a bit of competition since we came up and some of which who are heavily funded, so they can market themselves quite a bit more,” Park says. “However, we were the first to do this, and we have proprietary stand on it. What we have done differently is that we actively worked to educate our customers about the mattress industry, about how it works and we keep that at the forefront of all we do." Marino and Park add that while it has all been very exciting to see Tuft & Needle grow and prosper, it can also be very

stressful at the same time. With growth also comes the growing pains of owning and running a company. Personal growth and hiring are just some of the obstacles that the pair now have to face on a daily basis. “Neither of us had managed a company of this size before and we are definitely learning as we go but thankfully we have some great advisors working with us,” Marino explains. Although sometimes the process can be tough, growing is just what Tuft & Needle plans to do. When the company launched in 2012, it was just the two of them – Marino and Park. In 2014, the company bloomed to 12 people and last year, just under 80 people we’re on the team, with no signs of slowing down. What began as an online retailer and then a small showroom in downtown Phoenix, is now developing into a much larger retail space. “We have a showroom opening in Phoenix, which is a totally new type of initiative for us,” Park. says “We are taking

the retail space in a different direction, hoping people come in without any preexisting biases.” The new spot will be right along Grand Avenue, 36,000 square feet of space with a proper store front. The business partners say their hope is to play a part in helping the area where the store is thrive with some new life. By the time the space opens, Tuft & Needle will be up to nearly 100 employees. They aren’t just limiting their expansion to Arizona. Marino and Park are taking their mattress show on the road. Recently, the pair opened up their first brick-and-mortar store in San Francisco. “This is very exciting for us. We really don’t know how this will go, if our business model will work as a stand-alone company. However, we have the support of a lot of our friends and family and we are so excited to see how that does,” Marino says. For both Marino and Park, moving forward, the sky is the limit. “We are staying focused and want FEBRUARY 2016 |

SS_48_51TuftNeedle_Feb16.indd 51

51

Tuft & Needle to become a national name, working to help those people who feel they’ve been screwed over by the mattress industry,” Park explains. Mainly, the pair simply wants to maintain the growth of the business on the consumer side, while conserving the quality of the mattresses they provide customers now. They also have a few new products in development and are hoping to bring those to the public in the near future. “We are growing so fast so from a supply chain side of things, we are laser focused on being on top of the business,” Marino says. “When we began, we had five customer support people on our side. Today, we have about 40 customer support members and now that we are about to double in size, we will soon be hiring close to another 30-40 more people. The growth is becoming more challenging but we are ready to accept that challenge and take it head on.” For more information on Tuft & Needle, visit www.tuftandneedle.com.

CODERED-I Title: CEO and Co-founder Years with the company: We started 2 ½ years ago. Management style: Success is a team effort and I am an agent to my team of experts. I am successful because the team is successful. Most challenging aspect of your job: Technology is not very consumer friendly; my job is to be an advocate for the consumer and provide knowledge of ways to utilize technology that will benefit the consumer’s business and overall lifestyle. The difficulty is helping consumers who have made the investment with no product in hand and having to start over. We are strong advocates for consumers that get taken advantage of. My clients are long-term relationships and they need to be experts of their own product. What (or who) do you attribute your success to? My family and the silent teachings of success. My parents let me explore and analyze the world from different perspectives. What is your company’s name derived from? CodeRed-I began with a deep understanding of code. Red-I is what happens when you stare at a screen to long. Presenting the two words together gave us the concept of CodeRed-I. New initiatives you’ve implemented or plan to implement: We are not only known to be the best in the native mobile app industry, but our newest support to consumers is Critics of Code – we serve as an advisor through the development of your app, protecting what was promised to you by the company producing. We assure that the code has the deliverable and functionality of the expectations for your app. Consumers need to look at code as a language they do not read. If you cannot read Japanese, you would not buy a book in Japanese. Code is a language we are experts in. What makes CodeRed-I unique? Our people, our experts and my team. We are stealthy, we are quiet and we are strong and powerful. We do not need accolades; that is for our clients.

Mike Larrain

Previous job and position: President of L’Oreal Motto you live by: Work hard, play hard and have passion in everything you do. Management style: Entrepreneurial Meritocracy. A flat organization in which people are encouraged to take a seat at the table and participate in the dialogue with a mandate to take risks and continually think differently; always asking “What if?.” That’s part of the culture we’re building at PCA SKIN – to foster growth and innovation, not only for the success of the company, but also for our employees, helping them grow their potential and build their careers. What would you say to someone just starting out in their career: Think differently and continually ask “What if?.” Challenge the status quo. Be a dreamer no matter what career you choose – that is how you make a difference and separate yourself from the pack! What (or who) do you attribute your success to: Great people and great brands. I have been fortunate to be influenced and surrounded by both in my career, from mentors to colleagues to bestin-class products. Once you have an A+ team working on an A+ brand, you simply need to communicate the strategic vision and allow the team to do what they do best. How did you get started in the industry: It was coincidental; I was recruited to the beauty industry after working in the medical and dental device industry for one of the fastest growing companies in Los Angeles. Our creative business decisions put us on the radar screen, and I was recruited as a direct result of that success and that experience. What gets you out of bed in the morning: An early run through the streets of Arcadia! Biggest business risk you’ve taken: Leaving a stable and successful career at L’Oreal to join PCA SKIN. I am living my greatest risk today and LOVING IT!

PHOENIX SUNS CHARITIES Title: Executive Director Years with the company: 3 Motto you live by: You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room, but you better outwork them! I have always said there are people who could probably do a better job than I do, but there is no one who will outwork me. I pride myself on being reliable, always having a positive attitude and being a hard worker. These are what I call “unteachables.” Anyone can learn how to process grants and put together proposals, but working hard, being liked by coworkers and being self-motivated and passionate are things you cannot teach. Most rewarding aspect of your job: Seeing the true impact Phoenix Suns Charities makes in the lives of children. We are fortunate to have incredible nonprofit partners who work with kids and their families, and Phoenix Suns Charities is proud to financially support their efforts. What (or who) do you attribute your success to: Several years ago, I participated in Valley Leadership and attribute the program to much of my success. I believe in the power of mentorship and have been very lucky in my career to have amazing mentors. Valley Leadership offered me a platform to meet incredible leaders who quickly became my peermentors and friends. My classmates and other alumni have mentored me many times over the years, including building up my confidence to make a career change after a decade and becoming a mom. I am forever grateful for their love and support. Where do you see the company in five years? I hope Phoenix Suns Charities is a top Arizona foundation in respect to impact on the community. Of course, a shiny championship ring would be good too! What gets you out of bed in the morning? These days, the smile of my seven-month-old baby, Bodhi. Even before him, I always looked forward to going to work. The exciting challenges that are presented every day, the wonderful people I get to work with and meet, and the impact we make on bettering Arizona is what gets me going every single day.

Walter Crutchfield

Previous job and position: I’m a fourth generation Arizonan whose family has been developing land locally since 1961. Prior to joining Vintage Partners, I was a principal in Crutchfield and Associates and C2 Commercial Properties, The Paladin Group and Pentad Investments. Management style: I deal in the big picture, so my specialty is encouragement and cultivating what people are good at to create new ideas and unique solutions. With passion and creativity, you can turn any challenge into a reward. Most challenging aspect of your job: There are literally hundreds of moving parts in any development, so it’s synchronizing the various needs, demands and opinions in a way that satisfies all of the stakeholders. Most rewarding aspect of your job: The most rewarding part is when the challenges mentioned above are solved, such as our work to revitalize Phoenix’s Uptown Plaza. It was harder and more expensive to commit to bringing the center back to its 1955 glory, with the red brick and the deep awnings and the neon signs, but the reward has been seeing the tenants, the neighborhood and the owners all embrace the end result. What’s the most important thing you’re working on right now, and how are you making it happen? Thinking about the future because it’s easy to be a critic, but it’s difficult to be prescient. The retail world is changing so quickly, so thinking about traditional anchor tenants like movie theaters and how that might change in a world with so many entertainment options. So with any acquisition, we need to define the new paradigm of where development is going and what will it look like in the future. What’s the hardest decision you’ve made so far? To start a new business at the age of 50.

DMB SPORTS CLUBS Title: President Years with the company: 35 Previous job and position: I began my career as an activities director at a small, multi-recreational health club in Phoenix that was built and owned by local businessman Bennett Dorrance and eventually evolved into DMB Sports, the owners of The Village Health Clubs & Spas. In other words, I’ve been with The Village since before it even existed. Best advice you’ve ever been given: Treat people the way you want to be treated. It’s simple but it’s true. Most challenging aspect of your job: As we’ve grown, there isn’t enough time in the day to think strategically while still dedicating time to the facilities and the employees. Sometimes the biggest challenge is just carving out time to think. What you would say to someone just starting out in their career: Do something you absolutely love and don’t worry about getting rich. So long as you love your job and are excited to go to work every day, the rest will come. What’s the hardest decision you’ve made so far? To continue to invest in the Village Clubs during the depths of the recession. We had to have faith that the recession would end eventually, and we didn’t want to become just an average fitness club in the meantime. What makes The Village unique? The Village isn’t just a gym; it’s a healthy lifestyle business. What I mean by that is there is such a strong social element at every club; it’s all about relationships and connecting employees and members to create this second home that we all love. Where do you see the company in five years? Opening one or two more clubs while continuing to expand and improve the existing ones. It will also be interesting to see how technology and fitness continue to interact together, and continuing to partner with medical experts to design preventive fitness routines. What keeps you up at night? To never become complacent, to stay on top and keep the club relevant while adding value to the members.

Les and Diane Corieri

Best advice you’ve ever been given (Both): Love what you do and do what you love. Most challenging aspect of your job (Diane): As we expand, the biggest challenge is putting systems in place to maintain our high standards. But delegating and trusting others to do what we used to do ourselves is probably the hardest. That and being patient. New initiatives you’ve implemented or plan to implement (Les): In this business you can never rest on your laurels, so aside from continuing to expand with new locations and innovative concepts, we have to make sure we are giving attention to our existing locations. For example, even though it opened in 2013, last summer we did a complete renovation of Hi Fi Kitchen & Cocktails to amp up the already impressive lighting and video system. What you would say to someone just starting out in their career? (Diane): Don’t worry about failing; it shows you what you are made of. I can guarantee anyone who is successful has failed at least once or twice. What’s the hardest decision you’ve made so far? (Les): It’s never fun to have to fire someone, whether it’s an individual or when it’s time to close an entire business and start over. Either way, it has an impact on other people’s livelihoods and we don’t take our future or our employees’ futures for granted. What makes your company unique? (Diane): I think the fact that we are so active in the day-to-day operations. Experience is huge. We have seen it all, and yet I’m still surprised. Biggest business risk you’ve taken (Les): I would have to say buying the property that Bottled Blonde and Livewire sit on back in 1996 when there were no bars or restaurants around us and several of the nearby properties were declared slum properties by the city.

MAKE-A-WISH ARIZONA Title: President and CEO Years with the company: 5 Best advice you’ve ever been given: The correct answer to any problem should begin with who, not what. Most challenging aspect of your job: Raising the money to grant wishes to every potential Arizona wish kid. With more than 540 Arizona children diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition that would make them eligible for a wish, our goal is to reach as many wish kids as we can. Make-A-Wish Arizona can only do the work we do through philanthropy. We receive no government funding – only funds through individual, foundation and corporate generosity. Most rewarding aspect of your job: The faces of the wish kids and their families the instant they learn their wish will be granted. I also love to talk with the wish kids and their families during and after their personalized wish experiences, as you can easily see the impact their wish made, and the transformation a wish can have during a difficult time. What you would say to someone just starting out in their career: Be a lifelong student. Learn from those you admire and emulate them, and learn from those you don’t admire and do everything you can to avoid their behaviors you find irritating. Also, good grammar and spelling are important. If you don’t have those skills, start learning them now. If you do have those skills, be diligent about avoiding mistakes. And, probably most important: Bloom where you are planted. Find a way to excel every day. What’s the most important thing you’re working on right now, and how are you making it happen? Raising enough money to grant one wish a day this year – 365 wishes in one fiscal year. Every member of our staff and our board are working to make that happen. What gets you out of bed in the morning? The joy of working in the best place ever, with a dedicated, talented and fun group of professionals. Who wouldn’t hop out of bed and rush to work when you are basically the CEO of wishes?

NO ONE NOSE BETTER

How many times have you looked at a photo of yourself and thought...” My eyes are my best feature... but my nose just doesn’t fit my face! My nose just kinda gets in the way. Is there an easy way for me to address this problem without a trip to the hospital or undergoing a long anesthetic procedure”?

BEFORE

BEFORE

AFTER

The answer is a resounding YES! Dr Andrew Wolin, a surgeon with training in Plastic Surgery as well as ENT/Facial Plastic Surgery, has been sculpting the nasal form for the past 30 years and has well over a thousand happy and satisfied nasal patients. Usually a short one hour office procedure is all that is needed to solve the problem. Dr Wolin feels that it is an absolute requirement to analyze all the issues involved with a patient’s nasal

AFTER

form utilizing computerized imaging as well as free hand drawing analysis to solve every patient’s individual problems. He feels that the ultimate goal of restoring facial harmony should satisfy the patient’s wants and needs first, rather than many surgeon’s approach of providing “ the same nose for all patients”. “It is the patient’s right as well as the surgeon’s duty to listen to the patient and provide a plan to satisfy every individual patient’s need. Only in that way, will the best outcome be reached and the melding of art and science be achieved” says Dr Wolin.

Dr Wolin is the director of the Wolin Plastic Surgery Center and has been practicing aesthetic surgery in Scottsdsle for the last 28 years. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Wolin is located at 8415 North Pima Road, Suite 110, Scottsdale 85258. You can call 480.945.8440 or visit www.awolin.com to set up a consultation to learn more about these incredible procedures.

Giving Clients an Unparalleled Experience: Luke Johnson, President and Founder of Legend Capital Group

M

oney matters – thus how it’s managed is of utmost importance. Are you tired of seeing your investments decline? Have you been thinking about doing some real financial planning, but aren’t quite sure where to start? Are you a seasoned investor who is dissatisfied with the level of service you’ve been receiving? Enter Luke Johnson, President and Founder of Legend Capital Group. “Given the volatility of the stock market and all of the information available today, it can be overwhelming,” he says. That’s why he has made it his mission to provide independent, objective financial guidance, coupled with an unmatched level of personal service. Time and time again, clients say what differentiates Legend Capital is its intimate feel and its unparalleled access to unique and alternative investment strategies. Perhaps you could say it’s a product of Luke’s upbringing on a small farm in northeastern Kansas, where it was ingrained in him to treat others with the utmost respect. He also learned the value of work and the importance of managing each hard-earned dime. His financial savvy was apparent from a young age, earning him a coveted investment internship at a national firm in Kansas City during his junior year of college; he would go on to join the company as a financial advisor, quickly becoming one of their top producers. But after five years, Luke wanted to provide more to his clients than the often impersonal, cookie-cutter treatment that can be common with certain larger firms. He founded Legend Capital Group with the idea that he could serve his nationwide clientele in a “best-in-class” manner. A decade later, Legend Capital Group is an awardwinning financial advisory firm. Luke works closely alongside a team of top estate planning attorneys and CPAs. He retains his cornerstone philosophy: providing exceptional, client-focused service and sophisticated investment strategies. “We don’t just do quarterly or annual investment reviews with clients…we communicate with them all the time. It’s continuous and ongoing,” says Luke. Circumstances are ever-changing, he reflects, and it’s important to stay on top of things. “I want to know what’s going on in my clients’ lives, how we can best serve them and create additional value within their portfolios. I know that if I understand my clients’ needs better than anyone else on the planet, then my recommendations will always be directly in line with what’s truly in their best interest.”

Whether a client is still working or retired, they can be assured of an experienced, trustworthy advisor who provides objective advice along the way, while offering a variety of solid, smart investment recommendations to protect and nurture their nest eggs. Alternative investments can do wonders for a portfolio, especially in volatile and down markets. “When clients learn they can capture 6%-8% in annual dividends within investment strategies outside of the traditional stock and bond markets, they are excited to learn more,” Luke says. With clientele stretching across the United States and an impressive array of honors under his belt (the Five Star Wealth Manager Award 2014-2015, for starters), Luke prides himself on offering all the expertise of a large firm, with truly customized care – a rare commodity. “I’m passionate about creating real value in people’s financial lives, thus making a big impact within their personal lives,” enthuses this husband and father of three. “Serving my clients and their families’ needs in this sincere and unique way is so important to me.”

Alternative investments can do wonders for a portfolio, especially in volatile and down markets.

ROMANTIC RENDEZVOUS

Love is the name of the game at these five restaurants BY CHELSEA YOUNG

Café Monarch

Binkley’s

If there’s a place that knows romance, it’s Binkley’s. Not only does the restaurant’s atmosphere lend itself to quiet, intimate conversation, but the kitchen here romances its cuisine with a touch of French influence. A well-curated menu of creative seasonal fare is offered, with an on-staff sommelier who can guide you to find the perfect match between your food and wine. www.binkleysrestaurantgroup.com.

Café Monarch

A candlelit courtyard lush with landscaping makes an evening at Café Monarch feel as though you’ve been swept into a love story. The four-course prixe fixe menu at this Old Town Scottsdale restaurant changes weekly, but some examples of what you may see include citrus crusted Chilean sea bass and thyme butter roasted filet mignon. Its eponymous cocktail, The Monarch, is particularly passion-forward; passion fruit reduction is added to a base of gin and hibiscus agua fresca with fresh grapefruit and lemon. www.cafemonarch.com.

n outstanding dining experience is two-fold. It’s part culinary craft, an art that is truly a love affair with food, and it’s part ambiance – the flicker of a fire pit, a quiet corner or alluring views. These five restaurants put romance in every detail, from the well-appointed menus where food is a heartfelt labor of love to atmospheres that captivate. Although reservations for Valentine’s Day fill up fast, know that no matter when you dine at these restaurants, you’re in for an experience that fairytales are made of.

Talavera

Located at the Four Seasons Scottsdale at Troon North, Talavera captures unparalled views of the Sonoran Desert in an upscale, seductive ambiance. Take in a sunset or dine under the stars on the restaurant’s patio, and for an extra romantic effect, opt for a table near the glass-enclosed flickering fire. The menu of locally sourced offerings emphasizes prime cuts of meat and enticing seafood such as pan-seared John Dory with truffle gnocchi. www.talaveraresturant.com.

Virtù

Tucked inside the intimate Bespoke Inn bed and breakfast in Old Town Scottsdale, the equally intimate Virtù offers a space that’s quiet, minimalistic and warm in which to cozy up. The ever-changing menu of seasonal fare is creative in its compilations and presentation. For Valentine’s Day, Chef Gio Osso is cooking up a chocolate progression menu – yes, even the savory dishes, like charred octopus and smoked duck, will feature chocolate. www.virtuscottsdale.com.

Take it from Dr. Holden’s and Dr. Tsujimura’s patients Dr. Holden performed a CO2 laser treatment on me 7 weeks ago and my beautiful results just keep getting better. My experience with Dr. Holden and his staff exceeded my expectations. Dr. Holden is fantastic, I will trust none other when it is time for my facelift!! —Margaret

I LOVE the fact he specializes in the face. I knew I was in good hands, literally. He is an artist. I am all healed and do not look “done”. He took 10 years off my face. I cannot praise this man enough. I know that anything I may need in future, he will rise to the occasion and to THE BEST job. —K.K.

He genuinely cares about giving people the best possible result and making sure they feel comfortable with everything, not things I commonly say when it comes to doctors so that’s why I’d highly recommend him!! —Cindi

I went to Dr. Tsujimura for my breast augmentation and tummy tuck on the recommendation of my cousin, and I am so happy with my results. —Jennifer R.

Dr. Tsujimura’s bedside manner is impeccable... As well as the surgery he performs. Everyone compliments how natural my surgery looks, and that I have chosen the Perfect size. —Briana

He’s perfect! I am glad I did my research and didnt go with the other two surgeons I had picked out, I 100% believe my experience with Dr T couldn’t have been better! —Ann

Amazing Results!

SculpSure™: The Battle of the Bulge Heats Up at the SHAW Center in Scottsdale Dr. Lawrence W. Shaw of The Body Contour Center of Scottsdale | The SHAW Center is the Only Provider in Phoenix / Scottsdale to Offer SculpSure™: The World’s First Hyperthermic Laser Treatment for Non-Invasive Fat Reduction. This 25-minute laser treatment eliminates fat without surgery or downtime. The SHAW Center for Aesthetic Enhancement was one of the first in the U.S. to add SculpSure™ by Cynosure to it’s list of fat reduction, body contouring procedures which also includes two CoolSculpting™ devices. With nearly thirty years of body contouring experience, Dr. Lawrence Shaw, a Scottsdale plastic surgeon, feels there is definitely a place for this revolutionizing, non-invasive laser fat reduction procedure in his busy Scottsdale plastic surgery practice.

"I'm confident that SculpSure™ will be a game changer in non-invasive fat reduction." “There is a strong, ever increasing demand for noninvasive fat reduction procedures that can address the concerns of women and men who are otherwise fit, but despite diet and exercise, still have stubborn pockets of fat,” says Dr. Shaw, a board certified plastic surgeon. “The results from our first nearly 200 cycles, including treatments on myself, are very promising and impressive.” The SculpSure™ laser uses a 1060nm laser delivered by four panels using Contact Cooling™ technology, placed in various configurations, to heat underlying fat tissues without damaging the skin. The FDA cleared, clinically proven and safe treatment initiates a process that leads to the loss of fat cells. Treatments only take 25 minutes and results are visible as early as 4 weeks and continues to improve up to 12 weeks. SculpSure™ is ideally used to eliminate fat bulges resistant to diet and the results look completely natural. A recent Clinical study showed that one treatment removes 24% of the fat in the treated areas. Treatments can be repeated after 2-3 months if further reduction is desired. “Always striving to provide the best care possible, I am excited to offer SculpSure™ to my patients who want to reduce fat in specific areas without surgery or downtime,” says Dr. Shaw. “Patients may experience a warm tingling sensation with no real discomfort during their SculpSure procedure,” he adds.

SS_66_79Do_Cal_Events_Out_Feb16.indd 79

SculpSure™ | The SHAW Center Scottdale “Our patients are given an IPad to browse the internet, watch a movie, or catch up on their emails, Instagram or Facebook during the treatment. After having the 25 minute SculpSure™ treatment in our comfortable facility, patients can immediately resume their normal activities, including work and exercise.” Dr. Shaw feels the “on the go” lifestyles of his patients makes these non-invasive, no downtime fat reducing options extremely popular.

rizona has a rich history of housing artists, and the historic Cattle Track Arts Compound in Scottsdale is no exception as it was, and is, the home and studio of three of Arizona’s most iconic artists: Philip C. Curtis, Fritz Scholder and Mark McDowell. And from Feb. 11 to March 31, Larsen Gallery will host a Cattle Track Legends exhibit. Philip Curtis’ striking portrayals in his magic realism paintings; stunning drawings on birchwood by Mark McDowell; and Fritz Scholder’s 1970s ‘real Indians’ depicted in paintings and works on paper will be presented at the Larsen Gallery exhibition. Larsen’s exhibition will coincide with Super Indian: Fritz Scholder at the Phoenix Art Museum, which features many of his most iconic 1970s works starting in late February. Enigma is a word often associated with Philip C. Curtis’ psychological paintings, which often leave more questions than answers for viewers. His more than 500 paintings and many more drawings and watercolors, as well as his influence on a host of local artists, deemed him the dean of Arizona artists. Curtis was a founder of the Phoenix Art Museum and lived at Cattle Track from 1947 until his death in 2000. “Fritz Scholder was also an enigma in that he never wanted to be known as an ‘Indian painter’ and yet his most

sought after works are his early paintings showing what he termed ‘real Indians’,” says Polly Larsen, owner of Larsen Gallery. “In these works, clichés were broken down and natives were often portrayed in contrast to the romanticized images of the past.” Scholder’s signature images became Indian cowboys, Native Americans wrapped in American flags and other SO SCOTTSDALE! |

controversial images such as Indian at the Bar, depicting a Native American with a Coors can of beer. Scholder moved to Cattle Track in 1972 and lived there until his death in 2005. A relative newcomer to the Cattle Track Arts Compound, compared to Curtis and Scholder, Mark McDowell moved to Cattle Track in 1994. He built his own home on the property using recycled materials from various sources. He has maintained his painting and drawing studio as well and founded Tiny Satellite Press for the publication of artists’ works, including books, catalogs, portfolios and photographs. McDowell was friends with both Curtis and Scholder and collaborated with Fritz Scholder to produce his last etchings prior to his death. Scottsdale’s history is enriched with the story of the formation and expansion of the Cattle Track Arts Compound from the 1930s until today. Many artisans, writers, performers and even statesmen lived, created or performed on the Cattle Track property. The collaborative and artistic efforts of the Ellis family (founders of Cattle Track), beginning with George and Rachel and continuing with their daughter Janie, provided countless artists to thrive in the desert with notables Philip C. Curtis, Fritz Scholder and Mark McDowell among them. Larsen Gallery, 3705 N. Bishop Lane, Scottsdale; 480.941.0900; www.larsenartauction.com.

cuisine La Bocca Wine Bar & Urban Kitchen dishes out Italian-inspired creations in an approachable, contemporary setting. Chef Danny Rubio, who also oversees the restaurant’s other Valley locations, shares his background and what diners can look forward to sampling and sipping.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE LA BOCCA’S MENU? Like most of the best wines here, we are a blend. La Bocca brings together the best of both the Mediterranean and Italy itself – from fresh basil and creamy hummus to savory bruschetta and housemade pasta.

In the kitchen with Danny Rubio, chef and kitchen manager for La Bocca Wine Bar & Urban Kitchen BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE A CHEF? Absolutely not. It wasn’t until I was 16, as a butcher for my father’s meat shop, that I even handled food. While I could prepare any standard cut of meat with the best of them by age 18, when I got to ASU, I studied communication arts, not culinary ones. I took a few jobs at pizza shops, which ignited my passion. By the time I joined La Bocca as a line cook just 18 months ago, I had twice the experience of most people my age. That experience put me on the fast track – both to learn and to lead.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH RUNNING YOUR KITCHEN? My goal is to be someone people love to work with and to learn from. While the job can certainly get stressful, and the hours can be long, we work in one of the most innovative, exciting industries out there. So when you are in my kitchen – act like it. Have fun, work hard and learn from each other every day. And smile! LA BOCCA IS A WINE BAR, BUT HOW IS YOUR TEAM WORKING TO EXPAND ITS BEVERAGE MENU? Our team of chefs has actually been working with a master mixologist, J.T. Tillman, to pair our menu with an entirely new lineup of cocktails. The stand-out for me has to be the Bocca Old Fashioned, where we make the Old Fashioned new using Buffalo Trace Bourbon, figgy pudding, orange bitters and cinnamon. It is beyond perfect with our bruschetta, especially the prosciutto and fig. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER CHEFS JUST STARTING OUT? Aside from always tasting and always experimenting, I recommend local chefs learn a foreign language, even just a few key words and phrases. If you are working in a kitchen in Arizona, many of your team members will be diverse. There is no better way to earn respect than by giving it to them from the onset by understanding their language and culture. I’m fluent in Spanish and use it constantly within our team. BLUSHING BUBBLY

AZ88’s Celebration Champagne is a fitting toast for a romantic occasion BY CHELSEA YOUNG

A

Z88 has long been admired for its sleek atmosphere, eclectic artwork and altogether hip vibe. Its sophisticatedly sexy sips beckon for conversation over cocktails, and while their overflowing martinis are well-known, their list of classic cocktails has the perfect libation for a special occasion with a special someone. The Celebration Champagne is a brilliant pop of color with a festive kick – and we don’t just mean the bubbly. Comprised of Chandon Brut Champagne, Chateau Monet Frambois (raspberry liqueur), and peach liqueur, the concoction gets extra pizazz – and a fizzy, flirty touch – thanks to sparkling confetti sugar. “It gives the drink a sugar explosion of colors and bubbles at the top of the glass and also adds sweetness and flavor,” says General Manager Dale Jodoin. Although AZ88 opened its location at Scottsdale Civic Center Mall 27 years ago, the original location (actually named Elsa’s on the Park) opened more than 35 years ago in Milwaukee. It’s there where the Celebration Champagne was first, well, celebrated. Jodoin recommends sharing a savory appetizer while sipping the sweet Celebration Champagne. Try the baconwrapped water chestnuts or the spicy Hell’s Fire Chips, sprinkled with melted blue cheese and doused with hot sauce. At the heart of this drink, says Jodoin, is a Champagne cocktail that’s interesting, fun and, of course, tasty. And, hey, that seems reason enough to order one and celebrate! AZ88, 7353 E. f you’re looking to escape the crowds that descend upon Northern California’s major wine countries each year, look no further than Southern California, in the Temecula Valley Wine Country. Located in Riverside County just one hour from San Diego, Orange County or Palm Springs, Temecula Valley Wine Country is the largest and most commercially successful winegrowing region in California’s South Coast area. With a climate similar to Napa, Temecula Valley is particularly well suited to growing grapes such as syrah, viognier, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, zinfandel and tempranillo; however, more than two dozen grape varieties thrive in the region, including sauvignon blanc, malbec, riesling, chardonnay and many others. Altogether, Temecula Valley has more than 40 wineries and 70 winegrowers, as well as luxurious resorts, high-end dining and, of course, amazing tasting tours. Here are some best bets:

Callaway Vineyard & Winery Though it is the oldest winery in Temecula, Callaway Vineyard & Winery (www.callawaywinery.com) is among the most innovative. Founded by Ely

Wilson Creek Winery

Callaway – of Callaway Golf fame – and now privately owned by a local family, the breathtaking estate and tasting room is built high above the city and boasts award-winning chardonnays, pinot gris and sauvignon blanc varietals. The winery offers three types of tasting experiences: a traditional guided tasting with an on-site expert; a “do-it-yourself” tasting using wine stations; and a “behind-the-scenes” private tour, whisking guests behind the winemaker’s curtain for a rare glimpse into the story behind the best bottles.

South Coast Winery Resort & Spa In addition to earning more than 1,800 awards and medals for its wines since its inception in 2003, South Coast Winery (www.southcoastwinery.com) has made its mark as more than just a winery; it’s truly a world-renowned tourism destination. The three-time winner of California State SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Winery of the Year encompasses nearly 40 acres on the east side of Mount Palomar and is home to lush vineyards, the lauded GrapeSeed Spa and traditional hotel rooms in a tower as well as expansive private villas hidden among the vines. In addition to traditional and private tastings, South Coast offers its guests hot air balloon wine experiences, yoga- and spa-themed wine adventures, and regular wine tasting dinners at its Vineyard Rose Restaurant, which is a Wine Spectator and OpenTable award winner.

Wilson Creek Winery & Vineyards Not only is Wilson Creek’s award-winning almond Champagne (and other varietals) available for purchase at fine grocery and liquor stores across Arizona, but the picturesque winery has been featured on The Golf Channel and Oprah’s OWN Network. Founded in 2000 by a multigenerational family and still operated by them today, Wilson Creek Winery (www. wilsoncreekwinery.com) has grown from 20 to 70 acres of vineyards, and is always looking to stand out from the pack. Case in point – they offer a white cabernet sauvignon. Still cultivated from red grapes, this lighter version of cabernet offers more fruit-forward flavors. Another point of differentiation is most certainly Wilson Creek Manor (www. wilsoncreekmanor.com). Located directly across the street from the winery, the 12,000-square-foot estate includes eight plush suites, which all have their own private bathrooms and in-room spa tubs. n a world full of excellent midsize luxury sedans – Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class – having to compete is certainly a feat of great proportions. One can only imagine the product planners at Jaguar attempting to win the wallets of luxury sedan buyers with their redo of the XF for 2016. The good news is that the 2016 Jaguar XF is an excellent motorcar and vastly improved from the first-generation XF that was introduced in 2009. The redesign sees a massive switch to 75/25 percent aluminum from an all-steel structure, shedding up to 265 pounds depending on the trim level. Overall, it’s 11 percent lighter, yet yields a 28 percent stiffer body. The new styling is largely evolutionary and reasonably attractive, more FEBRUARY 2016 |

SS_94_95Places_Feb16.indd 95

purposeful than head turning. Most noticeable is an updated front fascia with large air dams beneath a grille that is otherwise a carryover from the previous XF. Unfortunately, the rear of the car is virtually indistinguishable from midsize family sedans like the Chrysler 200 or Ford Fusion. Inside, the XF has a completely new instrument panel that I found pleasant but devoid of freshness or originality, with requisite applications of brushed aluminum trim, stitched leather and wood veneer. Soft-touch materials are nice and the seats are supportive and comfortable. The new XF is loaded with state-ofthe art tech, including a new InControl Touch Pro interface and 10.2-inch screen with faster navigation and Internet-based features. In short, the infotainment system is excellent. Jaguar also advances connectivity between your smartphone and car through an app that lets you track the location, condition and information about your car from anywhere. The 2016 Jaguar XF is offered in four trim levels: Premium, Prestige, R-Sport and S (tested here). Initially, all trim levels are offered with just one engine: The 3.0-liter V-6, available with either 340 or 380 horsepower. I found performance to be more than adequate and averaged nearly 30 mpg on the highway with the rear-wheel drive model. Jaguar indicated that a 2.0-liter, 180-horsepower, turbodiesel four-cylinder engine will be available mid-2016. Unfortunately, Jaguar discontinued the superfast, supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 models with horsepower as high as 550. Although the styling isn’t a game changer, and, for now, it is offered with only one engine, there’s a lot to like and recommend about the new XF and it’s a significant step above its predecessor. A TABLE FOR TWO

Step up your dinner game with this dining duo from Arhaus

D

inner for two is sophisticatedly served at this new French industrial bar table and stool pairing from Arhaus. With a fashionable fusion of cast iron and solid oak, both pieces are the perfect accompaniment to a meal with your special someone. At 31 inches, the Henry Bar Table is an ideal fit for kitchens, nooks and smaller spaces. While the base is crafted from durable cast iron, the top is solid oak that’s finished in a rich dark brown shade. The table’s components are joined together using one of the best techniques to secure two pieces of wood – mortise-and-tenon construction. The Trevor Wood Bar Stool pairs rugged refinement with function; the stool is height adjustable and built on a cast iron base that’s adhered to solid oak legs, with double stretchers for extra stability and support. A hand-finished stain gives the oak a timeworn, rustic appearance and the seat itself is also oak. Both the table and stools are sealed with a durable lacquer to help protect the wood from wear and tear. So, whether you’re cozied up in your breakfast nook or sipping wine on your sun porch, no matter how many times you do so, this duo is built to last – and to impress.

Table is $1,149; each stool is $599. Arhaus is located at Kierland Commons, 7030 E. Greenway Pkwy.; Scottsdale; 480.607.4464; www.arhaus.com.

Family Law

with Yvette and Jennifer Spousal Maintenance

Nancy, an executive with Boeing, served Mark, a stay at home father, with divorce papers after a 23 year marriage. Is there a set formula for spousal maintenance in Arizona?

Yvette says:

There is no formula for spousal maintenance in Arizona. Spousal maintenance is for rehabilitative purposes, meaning it is to rehabilitate the other party to the point where he can earn income to meet his reasonable needs. There are other factors a Court will consider, including, but not limited to, length of marriage, standard of living established during the marriage, earning abilities of the parties, age of the person requesting maintenance, and other assets obtained.

Paternity

Jeff has a son, Stuart, with his ex-girlfriend, Patty and his name is on the birth certificate. Does Jeff have any legal right to parenting time?

Jennifer says:

The simple answer is no. Jeff will have to file a Petition for Paternity and to Establish Parenting Time and obtain an Order of Paternity from the Court before he is considered a legal parent. In other words, until Jeff obtains the Order of Paternity, Patty is free to do whatever she wishes as the only legal parent of Stuart. Karen Jones and Kathy Woodring

When possible, Yvette and Jennifer encourage amicable resolution of family issues through mediation. Otherwise, Yvette and Jennifer are ready to fight for your rights in court. Rubin & Ansel. SIP, SWIRL, SWOON

Win Valentine’s Day with these local varietals BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

I

t is a well-known fact that wine has a long, storied history as an aphrodisiac. But, when it comes to the most romantic holiday of the year, which bottles are best to set the mood? With nearly 100 wineries across Arizona, why not surprise your love with something local this Valentine’s Day? Raise your glass and toast your partner with one of these unique finds. Pillsbury: Diva Red As the name suggests, this blend of syrah, mourvedre and petite sirah is intense. And just like your diva, she is worth all the fuss. Honored with a 2015 Arizona Republic Wine Competition gold medal and named the “Best NonTraditional Red Blend” in Arizona, this wine is among veteran winemaker Sam Pillsbury’s flagship wines. Grapes are handpicked from high-desert vines and aged for 11 months in French and American oak, resulting in an explosion of fragrance and flavor. Retail cost: $30-$40 Available at: Total Wine & More, Beckett’s Table, Binkley’s, Different Pointe of View, The Musical Instrument Museum and AJ’s Fine Foods, among others. Online at www.pillsburywine.com. Provisioner: Rosé If your love is always on the lookout for the latest and greatest Arizona winemaker, Eric Glomski has you covered. Glomski, known for his award-winning wines with Page Springs Cellars and Arizona Stronghold Vineyards, launched the Provisioner in recent months to the public, but the rosé just now became available for taste and purchase in the Valley. This blush-toned blend is an

intoxicating mixture of well-known grapes such as grenache and mourvedre, as well as some lesser-known grapes including French Colombard and Malvasia Bianca. The scent of rose water may be what entices you in the first place, but the taste of pink grapefruit with a hint of cherries is what will keep you coming back for more. Retail cost: $10-$20 Available at: Fine grocer’s, including select AJ’s Fine Foods and BevMo! locations. Online at www.provisionerwine.com. Dos Cabezas: Kindred Choosing any wine from Dos Cabezas WineWorks out of Southern Arizona is a smart move. Why, exactly? The winery itself is run by husband-and-wife team Todd and Kelly Bostock, and the grapes for their wines come from the couple’s nearby vineyards. But Kindred gets the nod here, given that it is more than just a red offering from the Bostocks, but also the product of a collaboration between Dos Cabezas, Arizona Stronghold, Caduceus Cellars and Callaghan Vineyards. The result is a smoky, rich wine that is unlike anything else available in SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Arizona, just like your significant other. Retail cost: $50-$60 Available at: The Arizona Stronghold tasting room, Callaghan Vineyards tasting room, Dos Cabezas WineWorks tasting room or Four-Eight WineWorks. Online at www.doscabezas.com. Sultry Cellar: Seductive All of Jerome’s Cellar 433 Sultry Cellar varietals are sexy, but the Seductive white blend is a stand-out wine. This bottle, which scored a 86 in Wine Enthusiast, is a must-taste for white wine lovers that showcases clear notes of riesling, but then tickles your taste buds with hints of marsanne and roussane, which are both Rhône grape varietals that are gold in color and distinct on the palate. The flavor is refreshing and lush, with a trace of honey and apple. Retail cost: $25-$30 Available at: The Cellar 433 tasting room. Online at www.cellar433.com.

Inspired by coastal Baja California cuisine, SOL Cocina at Scottsdale Quarter offers a Mexican dining experience that is both intimate and inviting. During the month of love, consider the pink guava creme brulee ($8.75) as a sugary sweet ending to a special night. Sumptuously rich in flavor, this dessert is perfumed with fruity guava and dotted with a garnishing of fresh berries. A crisp sugar crust gives the creamy texture a bite, while an accompaniment of golden coconut tuiles (a baked wafer) add an additional layer of flavors – toasted coconut and warm vanilla. 15323 N. Princess Drive, Scottsdale 480.513.6002 www.fairmont.com/scottsdale Chef Michael Mina has created a space that exudes contemporary luxury, and his bold menu is filled with many options created from the finest ingredients available, taking familiar dishes and elevating them to a whole new level. Here, you’ll want to try the Maine lobster pot pie, which is comprised of about two pounds of lobster. Your dish will arrive in a copper pot topped with puff pastry which your server will then remove and place in front of you. The pot’s contents, which are a combination of lobster, silky brandied cream and

anging from hundreds to thousands of dollars per pound, truffles are likely the most expensive mushroom you’ll find on a menu. As such, they have become synonymous with elegance and extravagance along with the likes of foie gras, wagyu beef and caviar. Whether placed delicately atop a dish or infused in oil, the uses of this culinary accoutrement are varied. Here, we’ve sourced some of the most tantalizing and creative uses of truffles at six local restaurants.

DISTRITO 4000 N. Drinkwater Blvd., Scottsdale 480.970.4444 www.scottsdale.distritorestaurant.com Distrito, located at the Saguaro Hotel, is all about celebrating the cuisine and culture of Mexico City with classic dishes and contemporary twists on familiar flavors. A testament to that is Chef Jose Garces’ take on the Mexican interpretation of flatbread, combining flavors that allow one to fall in love with something called corn smut (yes, you read that right!). The huarache de hongos is masa flatbread topped with roasted mushrooms, corn shoots, queso mixto, black truffle and a little something called huitlacoche. Huitlacoche (the aforementioned corn smut) is oftentimes referred to as the Mexican truffle. It’s essentially a fungus that grows on corn, but has been found to be perfectly safe and a sought-after delicacy with nutty, earthy flavors which mimic that of truffles. It’s truly the perfect complement in this savory dish.

EDDIE V’S PRIME SEAFOOD AND STEAK 15323 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.730.4800 www.eddiev.com There is no debating that, for a meat lover, a perfectly done steak is a thing to behold, and Eddie V’s has garnered a reputation for providing perfectly executed steaks night after night. There are few things that can raise the bar on a melt-in-your-mouth steak; topping a steak with foie gras and a luxurious truffled madeira sauce definitely elevate the experience. The complexity of the velvety madeira sauce, with pepper and truffle flavors, plus a hint of sweetness from the wine, marries with the richness of the foie gras. The result? A dish that is the epitome of opulence.

KAZIMIERZ WORLD WINE BAR 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale 480.946.3004 www.kazbar.net Kazimierz evokes the warm and inviting feel of a European wine bistro with ambient lighting, dark colors and seductive world music. Perfect for a refined meet up with friends or a romantic night out for two, the space is welcoming and comfortable no matter who you meet here. With nothing too heavy, the menu caters to conversation and consists of small plates to pair with your favored wine. The flatbreads provide a variety of adornments, but truffle lovers will find the Willamette flatbread a real treat. The scrumptious crust is topped with shitake and oyster mushrooms along with creamy Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, thyme and a truffle oil drizzle. The sweetness of the onions and the earthiness of the mushrooms are an ideal match with the truffle oil, which provides a unique umami flavor.

MARCELLINO RISTORANTE 7114 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale 480.990.9500 www.marcellinoristorante.com Marcellino’s is an upscale Italian restaurant that’s cozy and charming, with exposed brick, soft lighting and a romantically canopied ceiling. The approachable FEBRUARY 2016 |

menu has some of the best handmade pastas in the area, and the canestina di polenta ai funghi is a winning starter. This dish begins with crispy grilled polenta squares delicately placed on top of one another, creating a nest for a filling of seasoned mushrooms. The juices from the mushrooms soften the polenta just a bit, and truffle oil is laced atop the dish, creating an elegant presentation with a flavorful impact.

ROKA AKOR 7299 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.306.8800 www.rokaakor.com Roka Akor is a celebration of Robata Japanese cuisine, which is essentially fireside cooking. While sushi holds a very important place at Roka Akor, there is a great amount of beauty and tradition in the grilling practice, which evolved from the time-honored Japanese tea ceremony. A beautiful dish that incorporates the exquisite flavors of shaved truffles is the Muscovy duck breast. The rich, dark meat of the duck is lightly seared and rolled around haukai turnip and huckleberry and topped with a generous shaving of black truffle. Smooth and unexpected, this dish balances the sweet, mild flavor of the turnip with the hearty duck and refined flavor of the black truffle.

EDDIE MERLOT’S

Highly anticipated steakhouse opens its doors in Scottsdale BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

elieve it or not, we have Subway to thank for the opening of Scottsdale’s hottest new steakhouse, Eddie Merlot’s. “After I graduated from college in the 1970s, I went to a Subway restaurant while in Florida. Immediately inspired, I reached out to the founder of the cobrand – Fred DeLuca – and opened Subway’s first location in Indiana just three months later,” says Bill Humphries, who grew that franchise to nearly 750 across the Midwest by the mid-90s. In the late 90s, as Subway grew by leaps and bounds worldwide, so did high-end steak, martini and cigar bars. And while a fan, Humphries – now an elder statesman of the Subway brand and a member of several of its national boards – was surprised at how little these concepts marketed to wine lovers … or women. “I found myself inspired again. This time, to develop a high-end steakhouse that paid attention to both its male and female guests alike,” says Humphries, who opened the first Eddie Merlot’s in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 2001. “And, in a situation of life coming full circle, Subway actually played a crucial role in making this concept a reality.” Turns out, the name “Eddie Merlot’s” was born during dinner with a fellow national Subway board member named Ed, who asked Humphries for a wine recommendation. The merlot that Humphries chose caused Ed to exclaim that he would only ever order merlot from that point on. The result? Ed would forever be nicknamed Eddie Merlot, and Humphries had a great name for his restaurant.

Humphries’ hunch about reimagining a traditional steakhouse into a femalefriendly, wine lovers paradise paid off. The brand now has 12 locations, including its most recent addition in Scottsdale. “We opened our first location in Arizona in January in the heart of North Scottsdale, nestled on the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Pinnacle Peak,” Humphries says. “Our goals are seemingly simple: to offer the best food, best atmosphere, best team and best dining experience the Valley has ever seen.” The menu features prime beef (which is the top two percent of U.S.D.A.-aged beef in the nation), wines from across the globe and creative signature cocktails.

The brand also has the distinction of being the only restaurant worldwide preparing its wagyu steak offerings with the bone and high marble score, which enhances flavor exponentially. For more health-conscious guests, the menu features bison filet mignon, which is less than 300 calories for a six-ounce cut, and all the steaks on the menu are free of hormones, antibiotics and steroids. The after-dinner drink and dessert menus are extensive, including two interactive offerings: a double-layered cognac vanilla brownie with hot fudge and creme anglaise, and a bananas foster dish dripping with banana liqueur, brown sugar and butter over vanilla bean ice cream, both prepared tableside (and with fire!). In addition to helping create its signature and seasonal menus, Humphries also worked with the Scottsdale restaurant design team to create a welcoming atmosphere at the new location through the use of signature decor elements including intricate “glow lighting,” twotoned woods and custom artwork that incorporates elements of stained glass, and colorful mosaics. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
