AIN. THERE’S HELP—AND HOPE—FOR HAIR LOSS How Carly Klein and National Hair Loss are achieving unprecedented results. Hair is something we tend to take for granted – until it’s gone. Whether our strands are getting sparse due to genetics or hormones, medical conditions such as alopecia, or the effects of medication or chemotherapy, the end result is the same: self-esteem suffers profoundly, and quality of life is compromised. It was Carly Klein’s compassion for people in this situation that led her to establish National Hair Loss in 2010. As the vice president of a prestigious dermatology office, she realized the need for more specialized care – and more emotional support – for hair loss sufferers. There were so many misconceptions and misinformation about hair loss and treatments that people seemed to lose hope. And there was another problem: “I noticed that hair loss facilities were predominantly geared toward men,” says Carly. “I wanted to start a program to help women and cancer patients, too.” In the six years since, National Hair Loss has grown exponentially via word of mouth alone, even garnering a roster of celebrity clientele – strong testimonies to its life-changing care. Through careful diagnoses and effective treatments, a multitude of satisfied patients have regained the confidence they thought they’d lost. From the moment someone walks through the door for a complementary, no-obligation evaluation, it’s clear just how focused National Hair Loss actually is; not a one-size-fits-all place where patients are handed a bottle of Rogaine and told “good luck.” Instead, National Hair Loss features a wide range of cutting-edge therapies to address all types of hair loss. One of the most recent is platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a non-surgical, therapeutic treatment that uses the patient’s own blood plasma to stimulate cellular growth. With a topof-the-line PRP machine and the most extensive specialized training in the area, National Hair Loss is proud to offer PRP as

NATIONAL HAIR LOSS FEATURES A WIDE RANGE OF CUTTING-EDGE THERAPIES TO ADDRESS ALL TYPES OF HAIR LOSS. ONE OF THE MOST RECENT IS PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP), A NONSURGICAL, THERAPEUTIC TREATMENT THAT USES THE PATIENT’S OWN BLOOD PLASMA TO STIMULATE CELLULAR GROWTH one of its many available solutions. Though training and technology is critical, it can’t replace the human element, which Carly says makes the biggest difference of all. Each carefullyselected member of the National Hair Loss team has personal experience with the issues that their clients face, so they’re able to truly understand every aspect. “My team is made up of the most caring group of people I have met,” she says. “Three of my team members have dealt with Alopecia Areata. They changed careers due to being affected by this and wanted to help others.” Those facing cancer have valuable allies in the National Hair Loss team members, too: “We are the first in the country to have a specific cancer division, devoted to helping patients with their hair loss,” says Carly. “Our own

families have dealt with cancer. We relate to our patients on a deeper level.” Many exciting developments are happening within the company, including an international expansion (we’ll hear more in an upcoming issue). But one thing never changes: an unwavering commitment to providing successful, innovative care in a supportive environment. “Every day, we get to help patients take control over something they once felt hopeless about,” enthuses Carly. “This is one of the most emotional things someone could go through. I feel privileged that so many have chosen us to be a part of their journey in getting their hair back.” To schedule a no-cost consultation, visit www.nationalhairlossassoc.com or call 602-283-2355 or 877-551-5350 (toll free).

T

his issue is of particular importance to me. Not only do I love December (partly because it’s my birthday month), but one year ago, the December issue was my very first So Scottsdale! magazine to produce, and I was writing this as my first introduction to you. It amazes me that one year has already gone by; the weeks and months tend to pass very quickly in the cyclical, deadline-driven world of magazine production. It’s been quite a journey, and as with any new venture, I’ve learned a lot and I’ve grown as a writer and editor. I have been honored and inspired to share the stories of the people who call Scottsdale home, and I look forward to sharing more of them in the issues to come. This month, I was particularly inspired by our cover story on Walt Brown Jr., who is a family man through and through. He got his start thanks to the generosity of his family, and he has continued to give back to his loved ones as well as the community. Read about his entrepreneurial endeavors, starting on page 56. Of course, it wouldn’t be the December issue without plenty of holiday cheer. Get the scoop on festive fun at resorts (page 76), spirited coffee concoctions (page 138), fashionable finds that will dazzle at your next soiree (pages 100 and 118), and take-home treats for your holiday dessert table (page 140). Plus, we’ve included new must-try restaurants (page 78), how to have the ultimate night on the town (page 87), and, just for fun, six things we’re loving this month (page 64). For most of us, December serves as a time for reflection, when we recap the past year and look forward to a fresh start in the new year. For me, joining So Scottsdale! as editor-in-chief indeed marked a new beginning, and it’s been a fulfilling and exciting adventure ever since. I wish the happiest of holidays to you and your families, and with this, here’s to commemorating 2016 – for all of us.

EXPERIENCE BEFORE AGE

How Jennifer Schrader built a booming business as a smart, savvy young entrepreneur BY STEPHANIE LOUGH

A

t only age 35, Jennifer Schrader helped create and run a highly successful business whose tremendous growth has rippled throughout Scottsdale’s economy. As the chief operating officer and co-founder of Caliber – The Wealth Development Company, Schrader’s experience and expertise is that of entrepreneurs twice her age, and her drive shows no signs of slowing down.

How to handle fine hair -Ask the exper up close Schrader was conditioned from birth to succeed in business. Growing up Brighton, Michigan, a small town less than 50 miles from Detroit, she was raised in the shadow of giant corporations like General Motors and Ford. Schrader’s family also instilled in her the values of hardwork, determination and giving back – foundations that have been a critical factor in achieving her goals and the success she achieved at Caliber. “I guess you could say that I exhibited important characteristics representative of being an entrepreneur from an early age,” Schrader says. “I have always felt that spirit, and I always wanted to have my own company and brand.” Inspired to work hard and think big, Schrader was financially independent long before most people and moved out on her own to study architecture and design in Detroit. “Always fiercely independent and resourceful, I moved out of the house at age 16, never asking for financial support, to start my life’s path. This was the pivotal moment in my personal life.” With a special interest in building preservation, she found her niche in flipping houses, launching a career to bring older homes into modern designs and pursuing her passion for blending history and modernity. “I embrace the challenge of how design has to be relevant now and into the future, to find beautiful ways to merge the classic with modern, and doing so in a way that will last for years to come.” Schrader blossomed into a successful real estate businesswoman and savvy negotiator as she bought, remodeled and sold homes for profit. But in 2007, the economy crashed, and the housing market was in crisis. Michigan was hit hard. “I noticed that the residential lending market was quickly drying up and homes were losing value by the day. Looking for a more favorable business climate, I packed up my belongings and headed to Arizona.”

Scottsdale brought new potential for gathering funds from individual accredited investors at a time when there was virtually no access to capital from banks, especially for real estate. “Scottsdale is very opportunistic. State and local government leaders maintain a ‘pro-business’ environment and we have been able to create jobs and grow our investor clients’ wealth at the same time,” Schrader says. “Scottsdale is the perfect blend of quality of life, people and a business-friendly environment.” In 2008, at only 26 years old, Schrader officially co-founded Caliber with business partner Chris Loeffler. Today, Caliber is a diversified real estate wealth development company that provides alternative strategies for clients in residential, hospitality and commercial industries valued in the hundreds of millions. Their unique approach to offer acquisition, development, management and resale services – all in-house – has attracted some of the biggest businesses in the state and country.

Accolades and Challenges In her role, Schrader oversees Caliber’s acquisition and repositioning of properties throughout Arizona, totaling more than $200 million, from office complexes and

hotels to student housing and residential apartments. In the past year alone, Caliber completed the construction of Bahia 101 (a 40,000-square-foot office complex in North Scottsdale), purchased four hotels and announced a new sustainable building project called The Roosevelt, Tempe’s first “Net Zero Energy” townhome development that will rely on little to no utilitysupplied energy. She also does something most executives do not: With her architecture and design background, Schrader leads the design, renovation and remodeling aspects of all the properties Caliber acquires. Schrader says her biggest hurdle on the road to success was shattering the preconceived perception that age equals know-how. “One challenge of being a young entrepreneur is that some people want to see gray hair, which can imply experience,” Schrader says. “Our business is building alternative wealth for our investors using real estate. That challenge has been overcome as representative of our growth success and our credible reputation of doing and delivering on what we say.” Helping support this reputation are multiple acknowledgments, including the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce Economic Driver Award in 2016 and the 2016 Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Ethics. Schrader herself was recently named one of the Top 50 Under 40 by Real Estate Forum magazine and a 2016 AZRE Top Most Influential Women in Commercial Real Estate. With any challenge as a young entrepreneur comes perseverance, and it’s Schrader’s innate entrepreneurial spirit that’s motivated her. “I have always been the type to recognize and push my comfort zone and boundaries,” Schrader says. “This allows for growth as not only an entrepreneur but also as a human being.”

Zach Fuller of Silent Sector revolutionizes cyber security BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

I

nformation travels faster than ever before and needs to be just as swiftly protected. As a founding partner of Silent Sector Cyber Security Solutions (www.silentsectorcyber.com), Zach Fuller is a security guru devoted to developing unique security processes that achieve exactly this. “Today, I see a strong need in the industry to bridge the gap between the brilliant technology minds and the many organizations that need to implement better security practices,” Fuller says. Fuller graduated as a special forces engineer from the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare School in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Fuller pursued his entrepreneurial passions. “With my background in building businesses and two partners with 20-plus years each in cyber security, my business partners and I found the opportunity to transform the industry as we know it.” And transform it they did! Silent Sector opened its doors in early 2016 and provides unparalleled security solutions to impactful organizations. Solutions include security assessments, personnel training and process development. Fuller notes that Silent Sector serves a wide range of companies and organizations that hold some type of sensitive information and need to protect it.

Etc.

What do you enjoy most about what you do? I really enjoy creating awareness and educating people about security concepts. I like associating with the brilliant technical people in the security industry and then presenting their value to the general public using simplified and effective messaging. What are your other passions? I love the outdoors. I spend time mountain biking, hiking, four-wheel driving and camping. Arizona is such a great place for outdoor adventure that it’s hard to spend too much time inside an office! What do you enjoy most about living in Arizona? I’ve lived in seven different states, and Arizona is my favorite by far. We have beautiful areas for outdoor adventure while still having plenty of city life. I love that it’s a great place to do business thanks to the low cost of living, taxes and many initiatives by the cities and state. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

A NEW STAGE Adanna Esemonu, 2016 Miss Black Arizona, begins her next big venture BY BRITTANY MARONEY PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

B

orn in Arizona as a child in a family of 10, Adanna Esemonu found her voice by singing songs and performing plays for her large family. A natural entertainer, she later would take those talents to the stage and be crowned the 2016 Miss Black Arizona. But the competitive beauty circuit has proved to be more than just a platform for her shining personality – it’s given her a voice to help inspire others. “Winning Miss Black Arizona put me in a position to be a role model, which I have found to be an incredible blessing,” she says. “I feel empowered and most humbled by the honor.” In her role, Esemonu chose two platforms to stand behind: Helping those who have experienced domestic violence and psychological abuse and raising awareness about social and racial injustice. “I’ve aided children and their families, inspired confidence in young women and proven that my position is much more than a pageant, gowns and a glistening crown. I have many passions, and I am now able to shine light onto every one of them.” With the crown now being passed to a new exceptional woman, Esemonu’s next step is to take those passions and inspire business owners. In spring 2017, she has plans to launch her company, AECREATEUS and its website www. aecreatus.co, which will help entrepreneurs network with investors and businesses.

Etc. What do you hope AECREATEUS will grow to be? Long term, we will work toward a unit of top entrepreneur consultants who will help develop relationships with individuals and corporations who are seeking provision in their innovations. What have you learned from your year as Miss Black Arizona? I have learned to listen to my inner voice, not what others want me to be. A strong woman is one who does not entertain doubters and doesn’t believe in stereotypes. She ignores the limitations society and the media try to set for her. What are three of your favorite Scottsdale restaurants for drinks or dinner? I love Cafe Monarch, Mastro’s City Hall and afternoon tea at The Phoenician! SO SCOTTSDALE! |

hett Doolittle is the CEO of Bluume, a local consulting company where being on-trend is second nature to the business. So, it’s no wonder that he is quite trendy himself, both in and out of his office. “I’ve always had the belief that you perform better if you feel good about the way you look and feel,” Doolittle says. For this leader, it’s all about the right suit and the perfect fit; most of Doolitte’s clothes are custom-tailored by Evan Delaney and finished with fun details, including a pattern in the fabric of his jackets or “Doo It” inscribed on the underside of his collars. “I would consider my style at the office to be stylish with a splash of edge,” says Doolittle, noting that in addition to Evan Delaney, his favorite retailers include Ted Baker and Nordstrom. In fact, Doolittle’s style inspired his employees at the first company he founded, so much so that they began to sport custom clothing like their boss. “I believe that if I’m performing at a high level and dressing well, then others will follow – and they did. We were crushing it in results and we looked good, too.” When it comes to business, Doolittle notes that the right suit or jacket can have a positive influence on how people interact with you. “I still like navy and black as the base color of my suits, but it has to have something that makes it different. I like a subtle pattern or colored window panes in the jacket or suit that stand out.”

What are some items you are excited to wear this winter season? Living in Arizona, we don’t really get a winter, so I’d be excited if it just gets cold enough to wear a jacket. However, I’ll probably travel back east and then I’ll be excited to layer things. What is your fashion must-have? Colorful socks! What do you love most about what you do? I love leading and developing people. I try to create a fun culture at my company. Everyone expects each other to perform at a high level, but we have fun as well. If you’re not having fun in life, then you need to make a change!

FUR BABIES AND FASHION Noelle Creamer on the art of blending everything from classic couture to canine chic BY BRITTANY MARONEY PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

oelle Creamer always knew that she loved fashion, but it wasn’t until her husband surprised her with her first puppy did she find her obsession for all things dog-related. Lee, her Chow Chow, opened up a new world and inspired her fashion line: Farfetched Apparel (www.farfetchedapparel.com). “When one pup turned to four, I knew I had found something special. I became obsessed with creating a wearable line for dog-fanatical people like myself to display their love of animals to the world, and thus Farfetched Apparel was born!” Creamers says. The selfcoined “For the Dog Obsessed” site soon became an online hit. When she’s not wearing her puppy apparel, Creamer enjoys blending both high- and low-end fashion. She frequents shops like H&M, Topshop or Zara and mixes them with higher end items, premium denim, classic designer bags and shoes, and great vintage pieces. “My personal style isn’t so much about sticking to certain colors or patterns,” Creamer says. “If I love the fabric, the stitching is good, and the silhouette works well for me, then it’s a win! I don’t mind taking risks with my style, and it’s reflected in the variety of pieces I have in my wardrobe.” What’s hot this winter? Graphic and slogan tees are definitely a wardrobe staple because of their versatility. You can pair them with pretty much anything like miniskirts or your favorite denim. Metallic prints are standing out this season, as well as cuts that include off-the-shoulder and “boyfriend” styles that have a looser, more relaxed fit. What are your some great gift-giving ideas from your line? You can’t go wrong with one of our best-selling slogan tees! They make the perfect gifts for the person who has everything. Our rubber iPhone cases and ceramic coffee mugs have fun sayings and make great stocking stuffers for dog lovers, too. What are your three favorite accessories? My wedding ring, my Tom Ford sunglasses and my Adidas Superstar shoes.

Discover the hottest new beauty treatments! Ask the specialist – Ashleigh Ortega, owner of Scottsdale’s first-ever injectable bar

What is the newest and most popular treatment you offer at Injexts? By far, it is Kybella. I can’t keep it on the shelves. Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment to permanently eliminate the double chin.

What is Kybella? Kybella is deoxycholic acid, which is naturally present in our bodies. When directly injected into the fat cells under the chin, the fat cells are permanently destroyed. Even clinical trials showed that when the participants gained weight after treatment their double chin did not return.

How many treatments and how much down time can be expected? Kybella usually takes two to three sessions but may take up to four to six sessions in certain patients. Patients can return to work and exercise the next day. Some swelling can be expected for three days to one week so planning around major life events is important.

What else is hot at Injexts? Injexts is like a drive-thru Botox service. Once you are an established client, appointments are no more than 10 minutes in length. Your Botox formula is electronically stored and drawn up just before your appointment so that when you walk in, your Botox is ready for you. You can easily grab lunch and Botox on your lunch break.

I read that you do PRP treatments. What is that? PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma treatments. Your blood is drawn from your arm and spun in a centrifuge. After 10 minutes, your plasma is separated from your white blood cells and red blood cells. Your plasma is rich with your own growth factors and other nutrients, so you can inject your plasma back into your face and body to help with fine lines, acne scarring and stretch marks, or inject the

SS_46_49His_HerStyle_Dec16.indd 49

plasma into your scalp in areas that have early hair loss patterns. Growth factors stimulate the hair follicle’s growth.

You are both a doctor and a nurse. Can you explain that? Absolutely! I have been a registered nurse since 1999. My background was in orthopedics at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and then I continued to assist my husband, Dr. Gil Ortega at his orthopedic trauma and hip replacement practice at Sonoran Orthopedic Trauma Surgeons in Scottsdale when we relocated 10 years ago. My passion to become a nurse practitioner (NP) was completed in 2013 after graduating from Arizona State University, which was one of the first universities to roll over from a masters-level NP program to the DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) program. I am a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Injexts is my own practice, and I am independent from a medical doctor.

Do you have any specials this month? Yes, mention So Scottsdale! and receive 10% off any treatment or SkinMedica product. You can also buy four or more SkinMedica products and receive 25% off your purchase.

How do I book an appointment? You can download the free Injexts app or book 24/7 at www.injexts.com. If you are unsure of a treatment, book a free skin care consultation, or call us at 480.586.3789.

Injexts is located at 10201 N. Scottsdale Road at Sachi Salon Studios on the northeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Gold Dust Avenue.

From real estate success to classic car kudos, Walt Brown Jr. has built a legacy from the ground up, starting with – and in devotion to – his loved ones

Almost anyone involved in the local business, philanthropy or social scene has heard of Walt Brown Jr. The proud father of two has a reputation as a sort of modern day Renaissance man when it comes to his career and the charities he supports. Not surprising to those closest to him, his No. 1 priority isn’t the businesses he runs or countless nonprofits he supports, but it is, instead, being there for his family.

Perhaps it’s Brown’s solid priorities that helped him to turn a $6,000 loan more than two decades ago into multimilliondollar companies today.

HARDWORK AND FAMILY SUPPORT The youngest of five children, Brown is originally from New Mexico and moved to Southern California after college to pursue a career in real estate. Although he earned a business degree from the University of New Mexico, he says that he had originally planned to be a dentist. Yet, it was Brown’s early knack for business that became the focal point of his career. “I started work at 12 years old at an upholstery shop down the street from my family’s house,” Brown says. “I worked there for three years, and when I turned 15, I asked for a raise from $1 to $2 per hour. When they wouldn’t give me a raise, I went home and asked my dad for a $10,000 loan so I could start my own business. “He borrowed the money on his house, and then I started a business, which I subsequently sold for just short of $200,000 just before I graduated high school. I remodeled my parents’ house with a large portion of the profits before going off to college.” Brown says that his career took off with help from his supportive family, and a loan from his brother to attend real estate school. Now, as the founder, chief executive officer and designated broker of Diversified Partners, a successful commercial real estate company, as well as the self-proclaimed “driver of the ship” for Brown’s Classic Autos, he is humble when he reflects on his beginnings. “I grew up in a very close family setting – I had great parents, great brothers and sisters and a work ethic that was second to none. I was always accountable, always dealt with integrity, and made sure my word, as well as the family’s word, was good,” he says. “There was and is a lot of love and a lot of close family bonding.” Regarding where he is today, Brown notes that key relationships, being humble, making good choices, delivering on his word, and a having a steadfast desire to make sure that it’s all assembled with great people have been huge drivers of his success.

“I have been able to surround myself with great friends and associates who make me look great. Of course, it started with a loan from my big brother, who paid for my real estate school. I used to say to him every day, ‘I need to find what I love’ as I firmly believe if you do what you believe in and love, the rest is easy.”

CLASSIC CARS, REAL ESTATE AND COMMUNITY TIES Instead of just sticking with one career path, Brown has chosen, and impressively balanced, two. Brown’s Classic Autos, which he says was originally started by his dad in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1953, is described as a “concierge service to the classic, custom and collector car enthusiast.” The company buys, sells and services classic cars, which are a passion of Brown’s. “When I moved here [to Phoenix], I grabbed ahold of the new age of classic cars and felt it was important to raise the bar,” Brown says. “The fact is that I love classic cars – absolutely love them – and I wanted to keep up my dad’s history and what he built.” With roughly $10 million in inventory on any single day, Brown credits his company’s successes – including being the largest consignment program in the U.S. – to his team, customers and connections. “We have great relationships with all users, owners and other dealers,” Brown explains. “Most importantly is our relationship with Barrett-Jackson, as their team, including Craig Jackson, has been so crucial to our success and is really an important reason we are so successful.” In fact, Brown credits Barrett-Jackson for where his company is today. “They are the best in the industry, and they want the market and the cars to be the best they can be. The fact is that Brown’s would never be where we are today without them and the great input from their team.” Of course, for Brown, it all comes down to passion, including every last detail. “I love building the best classic cars in the nation. I love designing and walking through the final details and then smoking the tires down the street or on the

SO SCOTTSDALE! |

SS_56_59CoverWalt_Dec16.indd 58

58

racetrack. Nothing about this is difficult because I love it.” In addition to classic cars, one of Brown’s other passions is developing real estate, so it was 25 years ago that he founded Diversified Partners. According to Brown, the company offers real estate development services, property management and tenant expansion services throughout the U.S. “I love deals and I love design. This applies to the 3 million square feet of buildings I have designed, built and developed,” he says. “I also love problemsolving, I love teamwork and I just really love solving problems and the big picture. I have never worked a day in my life since I started developing real estate.” Diversified Partners has been responsible for several well-known Valley buildings, including many in Scottsdale and the East Valley, and the company has several projects lined up for 2017. So, how does Brown balance both businesses? With a positive attitude and the right people, he says. “Great team members in both companies have made us who we are and defined us every day.” One aspect that’s important to Brown is making sure that his businesses give back to the community. Each year, through donations and a memorable Christmas party, his companies support the TGen Foundation, the Foundation for Blind Children, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Thunderbirds Charities, the Larry Fitzgerald First Down Fund and more. Brown also supports these charities in his personal time, too. And speaking of personal time, while Brown’s career successes are no doubtedly a major part of who he is, there is nothing more important than his family, especially his two sons. He enthusiastically shares that his goal of “being the best dad ever” comes before anything else. “I have two sons: Wally, a teenager, and Cooper, who is five. Nothing is more important than my children, absolutely nothing,” he says. “The good news is that they both love cars as well as property tours, so they know and love what we do. They are the loves of my life.” To learn more about Brown’s business ventures, visit www.brownsclassicautos.com and www.dpcre.com.

While we won’t see the likes of snow here in Scottsdale, there are telltale glimpses of the season all around. Storefronts are decked out in red, white and green while window displays are strewn with gilded objets d’art and shimmering silver tinsel. Lights twinkle throughout town, in neighborhoods and at shopping centers, and restaurants glow with the warm ambiance of loved ones toasting good cheer. Alas, the holidays have arrived – may yours be merry and bright. Photo taken at Z Gallerie at Kierland Commons, Nov. 4 at 6:10 p.m. DECEMBER 2016 |

Tea Time

If your java is giving you too much jolt, perhaps it’s time you check out Teaspressa, which opened this fall in Downtown Scottsdale. Teaspressa uses tea, rather than espresso, to create gourmet coffee-like beverages with the same pick-me-up as coffee – but without the often-experienced caffeine crash. For the holidays, you (or someone on your gift list) can brew some at home with Teaspressa’s holiday gift set. The set includes all four of Teaspressa’s signature tea blends, plus Peppermint Sugar Cubes for a seasonal spin and a moka pot for brewing. Get inspired on Teaspressa’s site with recipes for DIY luxe lattes and holiday entertaining ideas. The set is available online for $98 at www.teaspressa.com.

The Inaugural Scottsdazzle

Scottsdale is getting a seasonal takeover with the first-ever Scottsdazzle, a celebration of the holidays running through Jan. 1, 2017. Poinsettias and holiday decor will line the streets of Downtown Scottsdale, gingerbread houses will adorn the windows along 5th Avenue (which will be dubbed “Sugar Plum Avenue”), and a life-size menorah will be lit nightly at Civic Center Plaza. At the heart of it all will be a tree that glows with more than 1 million customizable lighting options from its perch on Soleri Bridge. Special events will include outdoor concerts on select Saturday evenings, a Cowboy Christmas with The Singing Cowboy, a Santa-themed ArtWalk, and a Santa Wine Around. In addition to 5th Avenue’s decor, every Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. will feature live entertainment and happy hour specials at participating bars and restaurants, and on select Saturdays, 5th Avenue shops will have shopping specials. Discover all the details and entertainment schedules at www.scottsdazzle.com.

A New Way to Shop

Visions of Vitality

For many men, the idea of going shopping is about as thrilling as going to the dentist. And while online shopping is much easier, there’s the risk of ordering the wrong size and the hassle of returns. That’s where one of Scottsdale Quarter’s newest stores comes into play. Bonobos Guideshop is a new take on retail pioneered by the online brand, blending online and offline shopping and giving men an easier experience. The store stocks one size of everything carried on its website. Simply select what you’d like to try on – merchandise ranges from suits and shirts to golf apparel and GoodSport activewear – and then an order can be placed for you right in store by one of Bonobos’ Guides, who act as personal shoppers. This eliminates the chances of something not fitting, and since inventory isn’t spread across multiple stores, more size and style options are readily available. Bonus: Your purchases are shipped to you free-of-charge. www.bonobos.com.

Is she 38 or 58?

Look decades younger with Dr. Semone Rochlin’s J-Plasma Skin Rejuvenation It is true that with age comes wisdom and, unfortunately, wrinkles. That is, until Valley surgeon Semone Rochlin, D.O., FACOS, introduced to her practice a revolutionary skin rejuvenation treatment: J-Plasma Skin Resurfacing. J-Plasma turns back the hands of time and is fairly new in aesthetic medicine. However, Dr. Rochlin got her hands on the innovative technology almost instantly. Her practice was one of the first in Arizona to offer J-Plasma, along with her long list of other services. “We have been offering our Scottsdale and Gilbert patients this nonsurgical technique for four months now,” Dr. Rochlin says. What makes J-Plasma different from other laser treatments, such as CO2? J-Plasma is much safer and more precise. “Unlike other laser treatments, J-Plasma leaves no lines of demarcation,” Dr. Rochlin says. J-Plasma passes an inert helium gas flow over a metal blade to produce a luminous plasma stream for the surgical effect. The luminous plasma stream, or energized gas, resurfaces and revitalizes the skin back to its youthful appearance. Dr. Rochlin’s steady artisan hands along with J-Plasma’s advance technology can eliminate wrinkles and lip lines and other common signs of aging and sun damage to the face.

J-Plasma increases the skin’s natural collagen production, which tightens and lifts skin around the eyes, lips and cheeks. It offers patients a nonsurgical alternate to a facelift and eyelid surgery – and at reasonable price. “This is one of the most profound technologies I have seen for the nonsurgical setting. It truly is a game-changer when it comes to improving the quality of skin.” What can you anticipate from treatment? J-Plasma procedures are often performed with the use of local anesthesia. Anesthesia may be unnerving to some patients, but Dr. Rochlin and her team have created an environment of privacy, safety and comfort. Most patients’ skin conditions do not require multiple treatments of J-Plasma, but instead, as Dr. Rochlin says, a “one and done” visit that takes only an hour. “Ultimately, no one likes to age. I feel very privileged to be able to make my patients feel good about themselves, and there is nothing better than that!” Dr. Rochlin strives to provide patients with a natural appearance by bringing symmetry and balance to the face in more ways than one. She accomplishes this with nonsurgical techniques like J-Plasma Skin Rejuvenation. At last, you can be wise without wrinkles. To learn more about Dr. Rochlin’s practice and book your J-Plasma Skin Rejuvenation, call 602.653.0540 or visit www.drrochlin.com.

An outdoor holiday display will feature 12,000 LED lights atop the building and 100,000 lights wrapped in the trees around the grounds. enise Fleisch has been painting for 22 years and showing her artwork for nearly 15 of those. In 2012, she opened her own gallery, Lotus Contemporary Art, which features works by local and national artists as well as her own abstract paintings thoughtfully inspired by Fleisch’s surroundings in Arizona. “I get a lot of inspiration from people,” she says. “I live in the desert, so the colors in the desert inspire me as well.” As she’s grown as an artist, Fleisch has also found her own individual style of painting and has moved past simply imitating the artists who inspire her. “I used to want to be like Picasso, so I painted like Picasso and incorporated cubism into my work,” she says. “Then I found my own way, and now I paint nothing like him at all.” Fleisch, who creates large-scale abstract paintings, enjoys the freedom that opening her own gallery has given her – the ability to showcase her art whenever she wants without having to ask someone else to show it.

Over the years, Lotus Contemporary Art has garnered a reputation for supporting local artists, volunteering and donating art to local charities. Fleisch often chooses to donate her own paintings to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Hospice of the Valley. “If I get a certain amount of money for a painting, that’s an amount I may not have otherwise donated. Sometimes art is good currency,” she says. “And it makes people happy.” The gallery recently moved from Roosevelt Row in Downtown Phoenix to Old Town Scottsdale when her previous location was forced to close after the building got new ownership. While the move wasn’t necessarily planned and while she was happy in her old space, Fleisch is already realizing the benefits of her new environment for herself and her career. “People in Scottsdale are really interested in art. I was very comfortable with where I was in Phoenix, but I think it was a good move for me professionally to reopen in Scottsdale,” she says. “When I found this new space, I was in the right place at the right time. I think it was a blessing.” While many artists are doing the opposite of Fleisch – moving away from Scottsdale in favor of the emerging Downtown Phoenix area – Fleisch is enjoying her space in an established arts district. “I like where I am because I’m around a lot of artists and a lot more galleries,” she says. “I love being around this creative energy.” Lotus Contemporary Art is open daily except for Monday and also participates in the Thursday night Scottsdale ArtWalk. 7077 E. As part-restaurant and part-music venue, BLK Live dishes out contemporary American food, using seasonal produce and high-quality ingredients from some of the best purveyors in the country, all under the direction of Executive Chef Daniel Hackett. DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE A CHEF? I actually managed musicians in middle and high school, and then went to DJ school at one point. I was certain my future was in music. But fate had other plans. SO HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CULINARY WORLD? Like most high school kids, I needed money. Tired of being human ATMs, my parents suggested I seek out a restaurant job, so I applied at White Chocolate Grill in Scottsdale. That was in 2006 – and I only left a year ago! While I started running food, I eventually made my way into the kitchen. Over the course of a decade, I would eventually earn the position of executive chef and traveling chef for the company nationwide. HOW DID YOU END UP AT BLK LIVE? Instagram! Two years ago, my tattoo artist shared a photo from BLK owner Kevin Johnson’s page seeking great chefs for his California location. By the time we connected, the position was filled. But we stayed in touch, and when he decided to open a location in Scottsdale, I had him over to sample a few dishes and get to know my cooking style. It was a match made in heaven from there. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR SPECIALTY? If there is a way to infuse a spirit, wine or beer into a recipe, I’ve done it. Or I will do it. I use RumChata in my whipped cream, for example, and cognac to cook a rib-eye. WHAT IS THE ONE MUST-TRY DISH ON YOUR MENU RIGHT NOW? Don’t miss the BLK Meatloaf. I use Snake River Farms ground beef and pair it with a brown sugar bourbon glaze, then serve it with rich garlic mashed potatoes and hearty collard greens. BLK Live, 7301 E. t Pig & Pickle, the menu tells a story. The Merry Kwanzaa Old Fashioned ($9), inspired by local distiller Caskwerks’ Apple Pie Liqueur, is no exception. “We’ve known the Caskwerks team since their inception, and our collaboration with head distiller John Miller goes back nearly a decade,” says Pig & Pickle’s owner Clayton MacGregor, who notes that Miller’s creation did not disappoint. “There’s no using chemically created flavors here – just unadulterated apple pie in a bottle,” MacGregor says. “John spent seven years perfecting the recipe.” The result is a spiced, balanced profile of crisp apple, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar. “From there, we developed a cocktail with Caskwerks’ brand mixologist Travis Nass for the holidays,” says MacGregor, who took further inspiration from his business partner and bar manager, respectively, both Wisconsin natives. In Wisconsin, an Old Fashioned is as “in fashion” as here. However, given the harsh winters, mixologists have taken to using warm brandy as the base spirit. “In homage to them, we combined the apple pie liqueur with brandy and then added some Boy Drinks World Walnut Bitters to up the aromatic quality of the cocktail,” MacGregor says. The final steps are stirring in candied cranberry simple syrup and garnishing it with an orange peel and hand-candied cranberries for a touch of sweetness. Pig & Pickle, 2922 N. SPECIAL OCCASION

El Chorro

Vincent on Camelback

Nationally acclaimed for its extraordinary food and wine, Vincent on Camelback can accommodate groups of 12 to 120 people. Vincent’s offers multiple rooms for reservation – from larger to more intimate spaces – with each having its own individual style, decor and ambiance. Once you choose the perfect room for your event, you can sit back, relax and enjoy as Vincent’s will plan your time at the restaurant from start to finish, offering creative centerpieces, individualized menus and even special giveaways. For more than 30 years, Vincent’s has been specializing in combining French cooking with Southwestern ingredients, creating a unique blend of flavors that has become chef and owner Vincent Guerithault’s signature. Private diners have the option to choose from a three- or four-course menu, selecting their favorite options from an extensive list, which includes items like crab cakes with avocado corn salsa, black bean soup with goat cheese, a sauteed rack of lamb with spicy bell pepper jelly, and a lemon crepe souffle. 3930 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 602.224.0225; www.vincentsoncamelback.com.

Situated at the base of Camelback Mountain, El Chorro was originally built as a school for girls in 1934 and has a deep history in the Valley. In 1937, it was reimagined into a restaurant and lodge, quickly becoming a local favorite. Over the years, the property continued to grow and has now evolved into a place retaining its original rustic charm with the capability of hosting private events and large parties in its expansive indoor-outdoor dining spaces. While you can certainly have a romantic dinner for two here, El Chorro has some of the most unique and exquisite event spaces in the Valley. Rooms range in size from guest capacities of 40 to 250, and there is also a 5,800-square-foot event lawn. 5550 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley; 480.948.5170; www.elchorro.com.

Wrigley Mansion

Sitting atop a hill, Wrigley Mansion – a notable landmark originally constructed in 1932 by chewing gum personality William Wrigley Jr. – affords striking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and city below. Whether your group is eight or 125 people, Wrigley Mansion can accommodate a special dining experience, a private holiday party, a corporate celebration or a picturesque gathering. As the ultimate option for large groups, Wrigley’s “Make the Mansion Yours” buyout package gives groups a complete run of one of the Southwest’s most notable properties, meaning you can explore the grounds, dine in multiple locations and enjoy unprecedented access to the longtime Phoenix landmark. Individual mansion rooms can also be reserved to host an intimate, private party. 2501 E. Telawa Trail, Phoenix; 602.955.4079; www.wrigleymansion.com. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

jade bar

Located at the Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa, jade bar – a top gathering spot for locals and guests alike – features a cantilevered floor that juts over Paradise Valley for spectacular views. Here, in the shadow of Camelback Mountain, you truly feel as though you’re in your own sanctuary. The bar, which is nearby the resort’s restaurant, elements, features a jadestoneinspired interior with ample bar and lounge seating and an inviting patio complete with a fireplace, retractable fabric shade and misting system. Its craft cocktails, which take inspiration from the surrounding desert environment, are complemented by a distinctive small plates menu developed by Chef Beau MacMillan. 5700 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley; 480.948.2100; www.sanctuaryoncamelback.com.

Flourish

The restaurant and lounge at CopperWynd Resort, Flourish, pairs a selection of locally sourced, healthfocused eats with 180-degree views of Scottsdale, Fountain Hills and the Four Peaks wilderness in the distance. The resort itself is located in the mountains above Fountain Hills, and Flourish dishes out breakfast, lunch and dinner (plus a generous happy hour) with menu highlights including braised short ribs with creamy Parmesean polenta and a sandwich layered with prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, heirloom tomatoes and arugula drizzled with lemon truffle aioli. Here, among the quietude of the mountain wilderness, you’ll feel a world away as you watch daybreak or dusk. 13225 N. Eagle Ridge Drive, Fountain Hills; 480.333.1880; www.flourishaz.com.

Orange Sky

Perched on the 14th floor of Talking Stick Resort, Orange Sky sets the bar high – literally – with sweeping views of the Valley. The restaurant features fine dining fare spanning prime cuts of beef and fresh seafood that pair beautifully with the Wine Spectator award-winning wine list. Whether you dine indoors among the floor-to-ceiling windows or grab a cocktail on the 360-degree patio, you’ll be equally blown away by the sun’s glowing descent from up high. 9800 E. CRAFT COCKTAIL

Crudo

Micah Olson, mixologist and co-owner of Crudo and adjacent Bar Crudo, updates the restaurant’s cocktail program seasonally with new creations. Olson’s cocktails are brimming with farm-fresh and from-scratch ingredients, housemade syrups and house-infused spirits. Olson’s cocktails pair perfectly with Chef Cullen Campbell’s modern Italian cuisine, including squid ink risotto, the namesake crudo (Italian-style sashimi), crispy pig ears and whole roasted pig head served tableside. 3603 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; 602.358.8666; www.crudoaz.com.

Virtù Honest Craft

Tucked into the charming Bespoke Inn bed and breakfast in Old Town Scottsdale, Virtù is an award-winning eatery helmed by Chef Gio Osso in the kitchen and Jeremy Key behind the bar. The Mediterranean-inspired menu changes almost weekly (and sometimes daily) featuring handmade pastas, seasonal produce sourced from Arizona farmers, and seafood imported from notable fish markets in North America and southern Europe. Likewise, the seasonal cocktail program is crafted with fresh-pressed juices, housemade syrups and unique spirits, also focusing on readily available ingredients. Both food and beverage pair wonderfully here in a “symphony of sights, scents and tastes” – to quote the chef himself. 3701 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale; 480.946.3477; www.virtuscottsdale.com.

UNIQUE BAR Counter Intuitive

No other bar in the Valley does what Old Town Scottsdale’s Counter Intuitive does – it changes themes every three to four months, meaning the decor and food/beverage selections rotate according to the theme, garnering inspiration from a person, place or era. So, at any given time, you could walk into an entirely new experience at this bar and on its menu. Past themes include Havana Nights, Bourbon Street, and Picasso’s Secret Visit to Cuba. The theme recently transitioned to Past, Present & Future, which is a look back at some favorite cocktails from the bar’s past four themes, plus a sneak peek at some ideas to come. Garrison Whiting leads the culinary front, while head mixologist Keifer Gilbert whips up the themed cocktails. Keep in mind the bar is open only Wednesday through Saturday, 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. 7133 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale; www.counterintuitiveaz.com.

Linger Longer Lounge

Hidden in the corner of what seems to be an average shopping center is Linger Longer Lounge, a not-so-average vintage cocktail lounge and kitchen. You’ll likely wind up lingering here a little longer than you originally planned due to the sumptuous bar seating, welcoming waiters and bartenders, dim lighting and overall relaxed, cool vibe. Oh, and let’s not forget the patio, draft cocktails (yes, you read that right!) and elevated pub menu. Hit the dance floor when the vinyl DJ starts spinning, or make your way to the game room and unleash your inner child with retro games like arcade ball machines and electric darts. 6522 N. 16th St., Phoenix; 602.264.4549; www.lingerlongeraz.com.

LIVE MUSIC

Crescent Ballroom

This Phoenix staple is three things: A mid-sized concert venue in Downtown Phoenix with live music every day; a lounge open daily with full bar service; and Cocina 10, which serves locally-sourced Mexican eats developed by Chris Bianco until midnight every day. The venue is host to various national touring bands and local artists, as well as home to regular performances in the lounge such as live Flamenco every Sunday. Although the bands performing in the concert venue require tickets, you’ll never pay cover in the lounge. 308 N. 2nd Ave., Phoenix; 602.716.2222; www.crescentphx.com.

Sip Coffee & Beer Garage

Housed in an old auto oil shop, Sip Coffee & Beer Garage is one of Phoenix’s most popular destinations for specialty coffee, craft beer, cocktails and locally sourced food. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick sip, working remotely or meeting with friends, the welcoming atmosphere during the day and live acoustic music on the nights and weekends are sure to bring you back time and time again. This month, Sip (which also has a Scottsdale location, Sip Coffee & Beer House) is showcasing live music Fridays, 7-11 p.m.; Saturdays, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 8-11p.m.; and Sundays, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The space also hosts various events including comedy shows and a monthly art night. 3620 E. Rusty Spur Saloon

The Rusty Spur Saloon is a local institution; it’s the oldest Scottsdale bar – and the first-ever Scottsdale saloon – celebrating more than 60 years in business. Its building is a registered historic landmark that used to be the Farmer’s State Bank of Scottsdale, and now that the money’s gone, the vault is filled with liquor and live boot scootin’ music. Filled to the brim with Old West decor, dollar bills dangling from the walls and some funky bar stools, this is the quintessential place to throw back a cold one and hear live country music every day and night of the week. 7245 E. Main St., Scottsdale; 480.425.7787; www.rustyspursaloon.com.

Old Town Tavern

The almost nondescript two-story Old Town Tavern is a laidback haunt along the Scottsdale Waterfront, and a perfect gathering place for friends. The tavern features live music every night of the week, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Sounds range from acoustic duos to indie rock by Valley-favorite performers such as Mark Zubia, Daylon Greer of Elvis Before Noon, Preston Phillips and The Wyves. On Sunday nights starting at 7 p.m., you can be the first to hear music from up-and-comers at the open mic night. 7320 E. Scottsdale Mall, Scottsdale; 480.945.2882; www.oldtowntavernaz.com.

HIDDEN GEM

Kazimierz World Wine Bar

From the same people who brought you the aforementioned Counter Intuitive (as well as Cowboy Ciao), hails this wine bar that truly is quite hidden. Though it’s right next to Cowboy Ciao near the Scottsdale Waterfront, its entrance is tucked away. Once you step inside, you’re whisked into what feels like an Old World wine cellar, complete with stone walls, flickering candlelight, mahogany wood and plush, richly colored sofas (and plenty of dark corners) in which to cozy up. Named for owner Peter Kasperksi’s father, the decor at Kazimierz pays tribute to him through family photos and coin and stamp collections. The venue features live music every night from 9 p.m. to midnight and while they boast craft cocktails and a small bites menu, the crown jewel here is the wine list of more than 2,000 bottles, featuring varieties from all over the globe – take flight with one of their offered wine tastings. 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale; 480.946.3004; www.kazbar.net.

MercBar

Since opening in 1996, MercBar has easily become a staple in the Biltmore area. The bar has its roots in New York City; the original was opened on Mercer Street in the heart of the SoHo neighborhood. Thus, the MercBar here in Phoenix has an undoubtedly Manhattan vibe, with a dark interior reminiscent of a speakeasy. In fact, only a wooden door and a small sign that reads “Proper Attire Required” will let you know that you’re in the right place. Upon entering, you’ll head down a dim hallway leading to a posh ensemble of leather couches and intimate coppertop tables assembled in corners and in seemingly private arrangements. You can peruse an extensive selection of scotch, bourbon, whiskey and craft cocktails, as well as a wine list and elevated bar snacks, all to the tune of music playing in the sophisticated space. 2525 E. HAPPY HOUR

Buck & Rider

In a building inspired by a beach house along coastal Australia, Buck & Rider conjures images of all things nautical and by-the-sea – and rightly so. The seafood-centric restaurant focuses on a fun vibe paired with a clean lineup of food and drink. The menu features fresh seafood, raw bar items, hand-rolled sushi, USDA prime meats, and farm-fresh vegetables. But, the real catch of the day is Buck & Rider’s happy hour (Monday through Saturday from open to 7 p.m.) and reverse happy hour (Thursday through Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to close). “Surf” on over to Abby’s Oyster Bar, located near the back of the restaurant, for a half-priced food bar menu featuring daily oysters, other select raw bar items and a variety of cooked appetizers. Guests can also enjoy $6 signature cocktails, house pours, featured glasses of wine and draft beer anywhere in the restaurant. 4225 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 602.346.0110; www.buckandrider.com.

32 Shea

The happy hour at 32 Shea may just be unmatched – theirs is a 12-hour (yes, 12!) extravaganza, turning your after-dark amusement into an all-day affair. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. almost every day of the week (Sundays until 2 p.m.), you can get five different cocktails for $6 each, choose from a selection of $5 glasses of wine, and sip on local and domestic craft beer for $4. Plus, from 4 to 6 p.m., they host “munchie hour,” where you can nosh on $3 bruschetta and other snacks, like artichoke and spinach dip, for $5. And it gets better: Mondays feature half-price on your first bottle of wine while Tuesdays deliver a $20 bruschetta and bottle of wine deal. The vibe here is hip and energetic, especially on the patio where you’re allowed to bring your four-legged friends. 10626 N. 32nd St., Phoenix; 602.867.7432; www.32shea.com.

Being a blue eyed blond I was worried that my eyebrows would look overdone but Rachell has been custom blending her own colors for each person for over twenty years so I trusted her to get the right shade and shape. I love the arch she gave me! It was like getting an instant lift! I get so many compliments on how my eyeliner enhances my lash line and makes my blue eyes just pop! But it still looks super natural! —Tina Clemmons President/Owner De Novo Scan, Clinical Thermography

I am a breast cancer survivor and my Doctor trusts her patients to Rachell for the final phase of Breasthetics (3-d nipple tattoo and areola restoration) after breast cancer. ver the past year, Dr Erik Svans and Dr Steven Chang have treated 100’s of teeth with a revolutionary procedure to correct Gingival Recession away from a procedure called Pinhole Surgical Technique™ or PST™. The results have been very impressive, without the need for suturing and cutting donor tissue from your palate, which was required for Traditional Gingival Grafting. Focusing on solving the original cause of the recession first (overzealous brushing, history of periodontal disease, bruxism), and treating the affected sites with PST™ second, Dr Svans and Dr Chang have been able to provide an alternative to Gingival Recession Correction

predictably and reliably with minimal pain—the number one reason why patients and dentists dislike the Traditional approach. Pinhole Surgical Technique was designed to help those who suffer from Gingival Recession procedure that is considered the most painful procedure in Dentistry. Dr. Svans and Dr. Chang were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. During your Complimentary Consult, they can educate you on this amazing procedure and how they can help correct your receding gums without sutures and with mild post operative pain.

places and you’ll be whisked to the private Tower Suite Lounge for easy check-in. The best ARIA Tower Suites are the modern corner suites, complete with breathtaking views (especially from the corner bathtubs!). If your style is more Old World, opt for The Venetian, an elegantly European allsuites resort. Each suite at the Forbes Four Star hotel has a separate sitting room and a marble bath with Roman soaking tub. The Venetian is one of the world’s largest hotels with more than 7,000 suites, as well as luxury shopping and dining, all under a single roof.

Gourmet Dining

To take the road less traveled, head on over to the Las Vegas Arts District to check out a local gem, Velveteen Rabbit. This local craft cocktail and artisanal beer bar feels a bit like an old-time speakeasy. You’ll know you’re there when you see the neon rabbit on the front door. The menu changes quarterly as do the featured local beers. If you’re in town on the first Friday of the month, you can enjoy drinks and explore the arts district on the First Friday Art Walk.

Pamper Yourself Like Royalty Have you ever dreamed of drenching yourself in 24-karat gold? Seriously, it’s possible in Las Vegas. Head to the 50,000-square-foot Qua Baths & Spa at Caesars Palace and lose yourself in the oasis inspired by ancient Roman baths. After soaking in mineral-rich pools, chilling in the Arctic Ice Room where snowflakes cascade from the ceiling, and snoozing in the relaxation room, you’ll be ready for an 80-minute facial to beat all facials. After cleansing and exfoliating your skin, then completing a facial massage, the therapist applies a mask of antiinflammatory 24-karat gold collagen to your face, eyes, lips, neck and décolleté. While your skin soaks up the coolness of the gold, the therapist massages more collagen on your hands and arms, then rests your feet in warm paraffin.

Cocktails are King It’s no secret that Las Vegas has always known how to party and still does. Only today, it seems to go above and beyond – literally. Head to The High Roller at The LINQ with its 28 glass-enclosed cabins and sip cocktails at 550 feet above the Strip. The High Roller is the world’s tallest observation wheel, and if book your spot in the specially outfitted bar cabin, you can enjoy an open bar for the 30-minute journey. If you prefer your drinks standing still but also with a great view, head to Skyfall Lounge, located next to Rivea on the 64th floor atop the Delano Las Vegas. With some pretty creative drinks and equally creative music mixes, you can dance the night away or sit on the open-air patio and watch the Strip below.

Long gone are days when your only dining option was a buffet. Today, celebrity chefs flock to Vegas, and the biggest obstacle is how to fit in so many great options in one visit. One of the absolute best Vegas dining experiences is at Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars Palace. The Michelin-star restaurant dishes out impressive French dining, executed by Executive Chef Julien Asseo. Guests can choose to order a la carte or select a prix fixe menu. Signature dishes include octopus with caviar, organic guinea hen and seasonal chestnut soup. The bread cart and dessert trolley are exquisite. For an extra-special evening, book the exclusive Krug Chef’s Table (it’s the only one in the U.S.) in the kitchen for two to six guests. It features a 10-course meal paired with Krug’s prestigious cuveé Champagnes, cashing in at

$500 per person. For something more casual-cool, check out GIADA at The Cromwell, the only restaurant of celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis. The cuisine will take you to the hills of Italy, but with modern California influences. Brunch is offered Saturdays and Sundays, and the tasting menu is ideal for a Vegas weekend. The salmon cake Benedict is served with a decadent prosecco hollandaise, the pasta is handmade, and the limoncello souffle with buttermilk gelato is divine. Delicate and fluffy, piping hot out of the oven, it is lavish yet light. And, of course, there is always room for dessert!

Shows are still the sweet spot in Vegas, and there are plenty to attend. Le Rêve – The Dream at Wynn Las Vegas offers Indulgence Seating that includes a bottle of Champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries and chocolate truffles. You’ll also get to enjoy the show in plush, oversized seating with private video monitors for behind-the-scenes views of the performance. Afterwards, your ticket transitions to a VIP access pass at select Wynn and Encore restaurants and a front-of-the-line pass for Surrender nightclub. For some good sporting fun, head to Topgolf Las Vegas. Sure, we have Topgolf here in Arizona, but nowhere else can you hit a few golf balls, catch a concert and sip cocktails at the swim-up bar (which is heated during cooler months), all while overlooking the lively Las Vegas Strip.

ne highly acclaimed chef is making it possible to experience four countries’ cuisines just two hours north in Sedona. Through the end of the year, Chef Lisa Dahl, of Dahl & DiLuca fame, will offer a culinary journey at her four restaurants with new four-course, prix fixe menus focused on flavors from Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Italy. So, of course, while you won’t need a U.S. passport to delve into the cuisines of these countries, you can take part in a special Passport to Sedona, available by request at each restaurant. And, if you get a stamp from all four places, trade in your passport for a copy of Dahl’s recipe book, Simply Dahlicious. Whether you take a day trip to check out two eateries, or decide to stay overnight in Sedona to spread out your culinary samplings, here are the details.

ith just five percent of the automotive market share, two-door coupes are considered objects of desire rather than vehicles that fill a mainstream transportation need. People buy them because they want one, not because they are necessarily a practical choice. The new Infiniti Q60 is exactly that – an object of desire that’s absolutely gorgeous inside and out. Once called the G35, and later the G37, Infiniti’s coupe is now known as the Q60. It comes in eight different trim and grade levels, including a choice of three turbocharged engines, beginning with a 208-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The next engine is a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V-6 with 300 horsepower.

The Red Sport trim level tested here is powered by a 400-horsepower, 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 and a seven-speed automatic transmission that’s standard on all trim levels. All-wheel drive is optional. The Red Sport is a new performance level for Infiniti. Think of it as you would the “M” line from BMW or the “AMG” vehicles from Mercedes-Benz. Like these performance vehicles, the Red Sport gets you more horsepower, larger brakes with red calipers, a sport-tuned digital dynamic suspension, 19-inch sport wheels, and aluminum-accented pedals and paddle shifters. What you don’t get are exterior body changes like flared wheel wells and carbon fiber applications as with the German models. Though, the Red Sport looks terrific. Its curvaceous body is an expression of visual velocity: low, wide and rakish. With its stretched and taut sheet metal, this is one of the most gorgeous production vehicles in the world. Inside, Red Sport features doorto-door, front-to-back fine-grain leather. Some Q60 models are available with white leather and glass-fiber accents. Darker interior colors are matched with black wood, aluminum or violet carbonfiber. Red Sport models are available with red leather and glass-fiber accents. The Q60 is a four-seater with two bucket seats in back. The rear legroom is better than expected, but the low roof compromises headroom for taller passengers. Rear seat space is for occasional use only. On the road, my all-wheel drive Red Sport dashed from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Handling is sharp and responsive with minimal body roll on cornering, and it does have a firmer ride than other models. Overall, the Q60 Red Sport is an unbeatable combination of high performance; gorgeous, aggressive styling; and a luxurious interior.

One of Scottsdale’s newest additions is Fat Ox, an Italian restaurant helmed by Chef Matt Carter. An early standout dish is the Charred Taleggio. For this appetizer, Carter pairs the semisoft Italian cheese, known for its thin crust and fruity tang, with an earthy roasted beet mostarda, black walnuts for added texture, and a hint of citrus. He tops it with Sicilian extra-virgin olive oil and serves it with fresh housemade bread, which you’ll no doubt use to sop up every last bite. Fat Ox, 6316 N. fter selling to brick-and-mortar boutiques throughout the U.S. for several years, Diane Meyer decided it was time to open a store of her inspired children’s brand, Goochie Goo Garbs, in her hometown of Scottsdale. As a mother of four and grandmother of 12, Meyer drew her line’s inspiration

from her children and grandchildren, launching Goochie Goo Garbs in 2012. “My children’s, and their children’s, love of their ‘blankies’ inspired me to create a line of keepsake quality blankets that were luxuriously soft, pretty and practical.” Her blankets boomed instantly. her brand’s immediate success, Meyer eventually set up a Goochie Goo Garbs website and added an online store. Her line of trademark keepsake blankets has appeared on shows like Kids World and at ABC Kids Expo. Now, Meyer has taken cute and coziness to another level right here in Scottsdale, aptly named Cuddles. Cuddles has a selection of unique gifts for “Tots to Teens and In-B-Tween.” The store offers the complete line of Meyer’s Goochie Goo Garbs, including the option to customize blankets, capes and pillows. “Customers can come in to Cuddles to see, touch and feel the vast array of fabrics and trims we have available.” In addition to her beloved blankets, Cuddles is fully stocked with fun products and nationally recognized favorites, courtesy of Meyer’s tasteful eye. “Call it my inner child, but I thoroughly enjoy our buying trips. We search high and low for unique and whimsical products that everyone will enjoy,” she says. Meyer began her business as a mother working from home and selling her products online as a “mompreneur.” Cuddles carries mompreneur products so that customers can experience homemade gifts without the barrier of the computer screen. “Call me old-fashioned, but I still like to be able to touch and feel products when I shop. My hope is that Cuddles offers people the best of both worlds.” The Valley will get a whole lot cozier on Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when the store has its grand opening celebration. Magic elves will serve hot cocoa, coffee and snacks while guests peruse the store and all its festive goodies. From selling Goochie Goo Garbs to retailers across the nation to finding the brand a home at Cuddles, Meyer is one busy grandma on a mission to blanket the Valley in love. “As the grand opening draws near, my team, friends and family are busy, busy, busy! Every day has been somewhat of a learning experience leading up to this point, but it’s a labor of love and it is worth it!” Cuddles, 8912 E. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
