Parisian

Perfection A one-on-one interview with renowned French stylist Jo, owner of Jo Paris Salon

J

o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We’ve even got our own massage therapist. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color

SS_3_18IN_Dec15.indd 15

line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

efore diving into this month’s fun-filled content, I supposed I should start at the very beginning. After all, that’s always a good place to start, right? You may notice a new photo to the left, and perhaps some new flavor and flair within the magazine. That being said, I’d like to officially introduce myself as the new Editor-in-Chief of So Scottsdale!. Although it’s not quite the new year, and holiday season has just begun, I’m already feeling the sense of wonderment, excitement, and joy that we so often experience on the cusp of something new or in the days leading up to our favorite holiday. I am beyond thrilled to be a part of the vibrant, dynamic community that is the So Scottsdale! family — from the local restaurants (page 128) and resorts (page 66) to businesses and boutiques (starting on page 82) — as well as our contributors, and, of course, our readers. In combination, these make Scottsdale so wonderfully Scottsdale. Almost three years ago, this city welcomed me with open arms (apparently you can take the girl out of Texas!) and I haven’t looked back since. Perhaps it’s because of all the exciting events; check out what’s happening this month, starting on page 56. I know my indulgent side would tell you it’s all of our crave-worthy culinary and cocktail creations (pages 70-72). It could also be Scottsdale’s fashion-forward sense, which, this time of year, offers up plenty of glitz and glam (pages 83-84 and 90). Or, perhaps it’s because of the kind-hearted, creative, and downright inspiring people who call Scottsdale home (see page 31 for our newest addition). In the pages ahead, the generosity of spirit in our community is evident. Gracing our cover is actress Laura Munoz-Bottini (page 46), who, beyond having the Old West in her roots (John Wayne is her grandfather), is passionate about making a difference in the lives of others. So, here’s to a new beginning, a new journey, and an (almost) new year. Whatever new beginnings lie ahead for you, I hope that within these pages, you’ll find many ways in which to welcome and celebrate them.

special message from the publisher

O

n November 7th, we lost a loyal supporter and very special friend of So Scottsdale! Magazine. His family issued this statement: Dr. Gino Tutera, MD, FACOG SottoPelle® Founder and AntiAging Pioneer, Passes Away

Internationally recognized and respected leader and innovator in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and anti-aging died peacefully on November 7, 2015. Gino Tutera, MD, FACOG, an early pioneer of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), died on Saturday, November 7, in Scottsdale, Arizona, with his wife Carolann and family by his side. An accomplished physician, Dr. Tutera was listed in America’s Top OB/GYN in Arizona, The Leading Physicians of the World, as well as The International Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He served with distinction as a medical director, vice chairman, and chairman of multiple hospitals and medical centers. Dr. Tutera successfully practiced medicine as a board certified OB/GYN for over four decades in Kansas City, Missouri; Rancho Mirage, California; and Scottsdale, Arizona. He initially specialized in obstetrics and gynecology and then moved on to treating hormonal imbalances in women. After recognizing the potential benefits of hormone replacement therapy for both men and women, he performed his own research, testing, and analysis in the field of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. The result was the development of SottoPelle®, his own proprietary, pellet-based, individualized, bio-identical hormone delivery system now utilized by physicians around the world. Dr. Tutera was a visionary and saw the importance of treating hormonal imbalances in relation to a myriad of medical conditions and symptomology. This was well before the connection of nutritional and hormonal health were mainstream, and before the connection between diet, health, and hormones was readily accepted or understood. Dr. Tutera was committed to helping everyone live and age well. Above all else, Dr. Tutera was a healer and was devoted to improving the quality of life for everyone. His efforts also included working with those with Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injuries, and countless other conditions where BHRT is able to play a vital role in healing and improving health. Dr. Tutera was kind, caring, and devoted to the health and well-being of his patients and there has been an immediate outpouring of accolades and sorrow from around the world. Dr. Tutera’s wisdom and legacy, encompassed and embodied within SottoPelle®, will continue to be practiced by the countless physicians he has trained and who will continue to be trained by SottoPelle® in the years ahead. Dr. Tutera will remain in our hearts and minds as we continue to grow and help others live and age well. Dr. Tutera is survived by his loving wife, children, grandchildren, friends, and countless patients. RIP Dr. T.

up close Hurst, who holds a doctorate in executive leadership, will be moving to Scottsdale from Knoxville, Tennessee, in January 2016 to serve as president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale (which encompasses nine branches), an organization she’s been an integral part of for three decades. “I’ve been working for Boys & Girls Clubs for 30 years, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the clubs in Scottsdale,” she says. “Personally, I’m really excited about experiencing new cultures, and in particular, our clubs on Native American lands and working with the board to develop our vision for Scottsdale’s kids.” Focused on serving and empowering youth, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America are made up of a diverse group of young people from all walks of life. The organization’s mission is “to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” Hurst believes the Scottsdale board is poised to dream big and execute in a bold, progressive manner. “The bar will be set very high because it is our goal for our clubs to be Scottsdale’s talent pipeline,” she says. “We expect every single member we serve to be globally competitive graduates, 21st-century leaders, and focus on being the healthiest generation.” As a swimmer who has called Tennessee home for most of her life, Hurst is looking forward to Scottsdale’s outdoor living, as is her husband. “[My husband] loves to golf, so when I asked him if he would consider moving to Scottsdale, it took him all of 30 seconds to say, ‘Sure!’” Hurst, who has two grown children, says her 5-year-old granddaughter is already excited about her grandparents’ move to Scottsdale, while one of her daughter’s, who attends medical school alongside her husband, may be looking to relocate as well. “They are excited about coming to Scottsdale to do internships because they are aware of the wonderful hospitals here,” she says. “I’m very proud of my girls and very excited to have my family embrace our journey to Scottsdale.”

But even more than Arizona’s beauty and great weather, Hurst is thrilled to lead an organization that has always been integral in impacting kids’ lives. She believes it takes a dedicated group of generous people with big hearts and forward thinking to touch the lives of youth. “It is such a privilege to provide young people with hope and opportunity, while significantly equipping them with the skills and values needed to realize their full potential.” Hurst comes at time when the need has never been greater at Boys & Girls Clubs in communities like Scottsdale. “Boys & Girls Clubs hold the intrinsic belief that every child deserves an equal chance to pursue the American dream, to have a genuine opportunity to pursue their dreams, and achieve a great future,” she says. She tells a story of a former club member who donates a bicycle every year after he experienced a life-changing gift as a child. Fifteen years ago, this young man’s father lost his job, so their family didn’t have any money for Christmas gifts. “He told me, ‘I cried myself to sleep because I knew I wouldn’t have any presents, but

when I woke up, and saw that bike, I was so excited. Every Christmas, I think about that day. I always told myself that when I had a job and could afford to buy a bike, I was going to take it to the Boys & Girls Club. I wanted another little boy or girl to feel like I did that Christmas morning.’” It’s stories like these that keep Hurst doing the work she does. And with a staff of youth development professionals qualified to address the many challenges facing young people today, the new leader of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale says she is committed to providing world-class programs that will change lives, literally. “How many people get to go to work each day and say that [they can change lives]?” Hurst says. “I believe I am the most blessed person in the world. This is a mission for me and the many others who serve the kids who need it the most. I believe I was called to serve the youth of the Boys & Girls Clubs, and I have a strong conviction I was led to Scottsdale for a reason.” To get involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, visit www. bgcs.org, or call 480.344.5520.

Scottsdale 's Top Colorist! Rodney Gentry Discusses Hot Hair Trends for 2016

After the muted tones of autumn and winter, it’s always exciting to start the new year with a new hair color and for 2016 it’s all about big, bold tones. Scottsdale’s top hair colorist Rodney Gentry has been bringing the latest hair trends to Scottsdale for years, treating his customers’ tresses to the latest looks from the world’s catwalks and red carpets. Now, he shares his tricks and tips on how to stay on trend as we head into 2016. “Think bright and beautiful when it comes to color for the new year. Platinum blondes and glowing, head-turning coppers are just perfect for the coming season. Cuts are going to stay neat and simple, so start 2016 with bold, intense color that makes a statement.” Opt for simple, sleek styles to stay on trend. Whether your hair is short or long, treat your locks to a smoothing treatment like Brazilian Keratin Therapy to keep them looking their best. Alternatively, opt for a glaze or toner to achieve the ultimate gloss effect. “Hair trends in early 2016 are going to have a really powerful element,” Gentry continues. “This isn’t the season for wallflowers, although there are still some great options for those who don’t want to make too strong a statement with their hair. We’ve seen some really pretty pastels popping up on the catwalks of late, so if platinum blonde just isn’t for you then engage your playful side and experiment with some streaks in pretty pink or baby blue for a soft, feminine look that is incredibly up to the minute.” Curls are definitely out this season according to top colorist Gentry, who is based at Scottsdale’s renowned Sachi Studios. Straighten and relax hair to keep it super straight, whatever the length, and be sure to keep it nourished as part of your coloring routine and at home. In the salon, Gentry recommends the Goldwell Colorance range. Not only are Goldwell products able to achieve fantastic color, but they also actively improve the condition of the hair while it is being treated, thanks to their patented IntraLipid

some fun with your color and make a bold statement.” For customers who want to remain on trend color-wise but want a more natural effect, Rodney Gentry recommends his expert highlighting services or Shatush hair technique. Both offer customers the chance to brighten and refresh their hair, while keeping it looking delightfully natural. Whether you want bold hair that gets you noticed or sleek, natural-looking color, top Scottsdale stylist Rodney Gentry is your go-to colorist this season.

Technology. And to keep hair looking its best, Goldwell’s Elixir with Argan oil and Tamanu oil offers weightless gloss, silkysmooth softness and exceptional shine. It even enhances the color, keeping tresses looking salon-fresh for longer. “2016 is about feeling glamorous and standing out from the crowd,” Gentry concludes. “It’s about making the most of your hair, whatever the length, by opting for bright colors and brilliant shine. You want hair that people are going to notice – that is going to make people turn to you and say, ‘Wow, I love your color!’ It’s a chance to have

CONFIDENT COUTURE

Carla Engel is out to transform the world of lingerie BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

A

s a mother, Carla Engel leads by example to demonstrate to her 14-yearold daughter the right way to express herself through clothing. “Personal style is reflective of our personalities, and lingerie is no exception,” she says. After all, most would agree that what a woman wears is not a one-size-fits-all equation – and neither are the garments worn underneath. This is exactly what motivated Engel to create Just Rightie Nightie (www.justrightienightie.com), an online boutique that allows women to design a nightie catered to their individual body type and style preferences. Engel’s nighties provide women of all sizes an ideal fit without compromising fashion, individuality, and comfort. The semi-customization allows selection of bra size, bra style, fabric, and length. “I want a woman to choose her level of comfort in an otherwise potentially intimidating wardrobe situation,” she says. With Just Rightie Nightie, Engel’s vision is to help every woman feel beautiful and “just right” in her own skin. Engel also loves sharing in the creative process with her daughter, Ginger. “We make road trips to Los Angeles to pick out fabric and meet with bra vendors,” she says. “It’s been so much fun, and it also provides me an opportunity to talk with her about how clothing choices say a lot about a person.”

Etc.

What do you love most about what you do? I’m not curing diseases here, but I do think that helping women feel good about their bodies is a great thing. My husband says I’m saving marriages because men really want their wives to wear lingerie, yet many wives dread it. Well, not anymore! Do you have any future plans for Just Rightie Nightie? I’m working on updating the website to include mix-and-match pajama sets. I want to add accessories, too, such as bras, women’s and men’s underwear, and robes. As far as the business goes, every day is a new adventure and an opportunity to learn. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? My husband and I have four kids. My daughter is a Type I diabetic so we are very active with the American Diabetes Association. I love living in the Valley – hiking, biking (casually), and patio margaritas are some of my favorite things, and we get to enjoy them almost year ’round here!

POCKET FULL OF POSIES Nezza Blanquera is changing the floral industry one beautiful bouquet at a time BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

N

ezza Blanquera’s floral fetish is strong. “It’s kind of abnormal how flowerobsessed I am,” she admits. Upon moving to Scottsdale earlier this year from Sydney, Australia, Blanquera took time to contemplate the direction of her life story’s newest chapter. “I thought about things that made me happy, and things that electrify me,” she says. “One of them happened to be flowers. I knew combining my entrepreneurial spirit with the floral industry was my destiny.” Blanquera followed this calling and opened My Little Posy, an online floral shop that designs artisanal bouquets of fresh, hand-picked flowers each business day and delivers them to the PhoenixScottsdale area for a flat fee of $30. Just like Airbnb changed the hotel industry and Uber revolutionized taxi services, My Little Posy is turning a new leaf in the floral industry, making flower delivery more personal — arrangements are handdesigned, notes are hand-written, and bouquets are hand-delivered. For the holidays, you’ll see the likes of red roses or white daisies, but also unexpected touches, such as glitter on bouquets. Interested in ordering your own pretty posies? Each Monday through Friday morning, check out www.mylittleposy.com and the company’s social media pages to see the posy of the day.

Etc.

Your website has a lighthearted spirit about it. Is this a reflection of your personality? It’s is a reflection of our company culture. We’re playful, personable, tech-savvy millennials who love art and design, pop culture, being green, and saving animals. This translates into our brand identity and our unique floral design. What do you love most about your job? I love delivering finished bouquets and seeing the recipients smile. I love getting emails, Yelp reviews, and Facebook comments from the senders telling me My Little Posy’s bouquets saved them. I feel like a superhero. What is your favorite flower? Any flower that makes my mom smile. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

lan Christianson, a New York Times’ best-selling author and Valley-based naturopathic medical doctor who specializes in natural endocrinology and thyroid disorders, presents himself in a way that is mindful to others. “When you dress consciously, you show respect and consideration for those you’re with,” he explains. In his Scottsdale office, Christianson sports some combination of suit, jacket, tie, vest, and bow tie paired with accessories, often in navy and gray. “Nearly everything I wear comes from Imago Style and is chosen and tailored by my stylist, Charles Alexander,” he says. “It’s always great to have a pro in your corner.” Christianson also has another pro in his corner – his lovely wife, Kirin Christianson (featured in Her Style, page 40). “She’s so beautiful and always put together so well,” he says. “She deserves for me to try a bit, too.” And try he does. This doctor has done his fashion homework; he’s studied books like “Dressing the Man” by Alan Flusser and “The Handbook of Style” by Esquire to perfect the do’s and don’ts in menswear. “The nice thing about men’s fashion is that much of it is timeless,” Christianson says. “You can get high-quality, welltailored staple pieces, and if you want to stand out, these can be the platforms for trendier accessories.”

What are your favorite retailers? When I do shop on my own, it is usually outdoor stuff from REI. I do have a few things from Brooks Brothers and J. Crew. What do you love most about your job? Seeing people with thyroid disease get back to great health. This is such a common disease, and so many people still have symptoms. I also love the camaraderie of working with my team. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I love being outside with my family, climbing, mountain unicycling, and exploring.

“I

don’t give a flying fig if something is the latest style. Does it make your curves look va-va-voom? Does it make you feel beautiful? Then wear it!” Ladies, you can trust this fashion advice, as it comes from the posh and polished Mrs. Arizona America 2012, Kirin Christianson. As a model, pageant coach, beauty and style contributor, and founder of Red Haute Mama (www.redhautemama.com), fashion plays an integral part in Christianson’s career. Even as a young girl, Christianson loved to stand out with fashion-forward pieces. “One day, in seventh grade, I was so excited to wear my black-and-white houndstooth skinny jeans; emerald green tunic; and wrap-around, red leather studded belt. Let’s just say my little rural school wasn’t quite ready for that,” she laughs. Christianson’s style is best described as vibrant, approachable, and savvy with ultra-feminine details. And what’s more feminine than a flattering dress? “I’m always wearing a dress,” she says, commenting on their elegant simplicity. “It’s one thing to buy, one thing to wear, and one thing to wash.” Whether she is onstage in an ornate ballgown or lounging at home with her family in a simple dress, one thing is for sure – all eyes are on Kirin Christianson when she walks into a room.

I also love going to Glam Squad for color-rich gowns and DSW because shoes and sales are my two favorite words. What was it like to win the title Mrs. Arizona America 2012? It was a dream come true! reams of being a famous actress are starting to become reality for Scottsdale resident Laura Munoz-Bottini. “Things are really exciting right now. This summer I just wrapped up a movie that’s coming out in April called, ‘People You May Know.’ And I just found out I’ve been cast in a new television series called ‘Shot.’” The local actress, who’s done many stage plays in the Valley, as well as commercials and infomercials, is feeling the itch to segue into more mainstream TV and movies, noting that the timing is just right. “I’ve done a couple of smaller movies and TV shows, and I’m really looking forward to taking on this new role.”

You could definitely say acting is in Munoz-Bottini’s blood, as she is the granddaughter of the great Western legend, John Wayne. However, that doesn’t mean that casting directors and agents are automatically rolling out the red carpet for her everywhere she goes. “You’d think that with John Wayne being my grandfather, it would be easy for me to get roles, but that isn’t the case at all,” she says. “I have to prove my chops just like anyone else and show I have what it takes to hold my own in this business.” Even though she grew up with Wayne as her grandfather, MunozBottini’s parents sheltered her from the limelight, keeping her and her siblings away from the Hollywood lifestyle quite a bit. “My parents were not very supportive of my acting ideas when I was younger since my mother had already experienced all the craziness [of being John Wayne’s daughter] when she was younger. In fact, Munoz-Bottini graduated with a degree in psychology and didn’t act for several years after college. Regarding how her parents feel about her acting now, she says, “Now they see how much I love it and how happy I am. They’re very supportive and are there for me all the way.”

Remembering The Duke Although the legacy Wayne left behind is significant to his fans and Munoz-Bottini, his memory is quite different in her eyes. “He was ‘granddaddy’ to us, no matter who he was to everyone else,” she reflects. “We would have dinner with him every Sunday night. At his home, he had so many fun things – tons of toys for us, a giant movie room, and exercise machines.” Munoz-Bottini says she really didn’t notice anything extra special about growing up with Wayne until a shopping

trip with her grandfather. “One day, we went shopping for an appliance, and he was swarmed by so many people that we couldn’t get through. I couldn’t believe how many people wanted to be around him and get his autograph.” She recalls him handling this with such grace. “He told everyone he appreciated them all for being his fans, but today was family day and we went on our way.” Munoz-Bottini says it wasn’t until that point that she realized just how influential and how much of a star her grandfather really was. For Munoz-Bottini, it was pretty typical to see Hollywood all around her growing up. “As kids, we hung out with people like Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller, and Maureen O’Hara. It was wonderful because I’ve been exposed to old Hollywood all of my life.” She adds that while she is grateful for each and every role that comes her way, she would love to play a cowgirl one day and follow in the footsteps of her beloved grandfather.

A Heart of Gold Beyond her acting career, Munoz-Bottini is also a wife and mother of three. With one son in college and two kids in high school – and splitting her time between Scottsdale and the Los Angeles-Newport Beach area – she says the work-life balance can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. “With kids and traveling, it’s nuts. But, they are also very supportive of my career and are very excited for me. They ride the wave right along with me, and they’re my biggest fan club,” she says. When she isn’t onstage or in front of a camera, Munoz-Bottini is very involved in a number of philanthropic ventures. One that is, of course, very near and dear to her heart, is the John Wayne Cancer Foundation. “Several years ago, I got involved with Team John Wayne. We raise funds that go to Providence Saint John’s Health Center [in Santa Monica, Calif.], which houses the John Wayne Cancer Institute and the funds go to sponsor those in the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program.” Team John Wayne also raises funds for Roundup River Ranch, a children’s cancer survivor camp in Colorado. Members of this group and her family recently began bottling and selling their own Duke Bourbon, a specialty blend made from a bourbon The Duke used to drink while on his movie sets. Proceeds from the bourbon sales will also be used to benefit the organization. For Munoz-Bottini, these charitable acts just scratch the surface. “Locally, I work with Circle the City, which raises funds to help build and support a respite center for the homeless. This wonderful public charity helps homeless Valley residents heal once they leave a hospital, rather than head back out on the streets.” Another organization Munoz-Bottini is passionate about is boys team charity, which helps former refugees relocate and get an apartment, provides food, and aides them in starting a new life. “This is a good chance for me to not only lend a hand to those who severely need it, but also is a chance for me to work with my sons to show them just how fortunate we are and what the real world is like outside their neighborhood.” Munoz-Bottini is quick to point out that while her grandfather does have a lot to do with where her career is moving forward today, she owes a lot of her passion to her father as well. “My dad’s family is Mexican. He was born in Colorado and lived a poor childhood. They struggled and worked very hard, but are now living the American dream. “My father’s family influenced me to set my mind to something and to go for it. Sometimes we forget how lucky we are. We forget that in our country, we get the chance to do and say what we want to be when we grow up and make our own choices. Not every country is like that. I have such a great balance in my life now and feel very fortunate to live here.”

You don’t have to look hard to find artistic influence along the Scottsdale Waterfront. As part of Scottsdale Public Art’s permanent art collection, Copper Falls was completed in February 2015 by artist Bob Adams. Located on the southeast corner of Scottsdale and Camelback roads, it was built with the intent of creating an art piece out of the canal’s waterfall. It features a pattern of distinctive domes that bring a strong aural component to the visual design; as water spills over, it hits the domes at varying intervals, enhancing the sound of the waterfall. EXPERIENCE

COUNTS!

Looking great may be easier than you think. “I’d really love to do something to improve my face and figure, but I”m afraid of the pain, the post operative nausea and of course the cost. Isn’t there a way that I can enhance my appearance without all the hassles of a major production?” The answer is a resounding YES! Dr Andrew Wolin has found a great way to maximize the safety of facial, breast and body procedures while minimizing the pain and the cost. By utilizing an enhanced form of local anesthesia as well as sedation by specialists in ambulatory anesthesia, procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lifts, facelifts, rhinoplasties and liposuction can be done under a quick enhanced form of anesthesia and patients are be able to walk to their cars and go home after the procedure without nausea and pain. Part of the miraculous process is the use of a long acting local anesthetic at the conclusion of the procedure to give a 48 hour period of pain relief…no narcotic…no nausea. PRE OP

NEW DIGS

Local Bistro’s impressive renovation delights diners BY TARYN JEFFRIES PHOTOS BY DUSTIN REVELLA

O

n any given Friday night, you can catch the regulars at Local Bistro sharing bottles of wine, passing from one table to the next, and occasionally picking up another table’s tab. The sense of community and familiarity here is akin to that witnessed in the era of “Cheers.” About six months ago, Local Bistro, owned by German Osio of the Osio Culinary Group (Central Bistro, SumoMaya, and Kale & Clover), underwent an impressive half-million dollar remodel, which resulted in a bar expansion; complete patio remodel, making it three times its previous size; new flooring, paint, furniture, and pocket doors; and a DJ stand for weekend entertainment. For all of this change, the restaurant was only out of service for two weeks and reopened with what feels like a completely new space. In addition to the aesthetic and architectural changes there also were some major menu changes, specifically to the weekend brunch. The entire menu was

recreated, inspired by Osio’s very successful brunch menu at Central Bistro. The new brunch menu features several healthy options like an acai bowl and smoked salmon avocado toast, as well as more decadent dishes that are creative and enticing by description alone. How does a root beer waffle served with vanilla gelato (yes, gelato!) sound? Or, try The Elvis, mascarpone-stuffed French toast topped with peanut butter maple syrup, caramelized bananas, and bacon. Local Bistro’s tempting social hour (and reverse social hour) features many shareable eats, such as calamari fritti. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Lightly breaded, these are topped with padrón peppers and lemon conserva, and served alongside a Calabrian chili aioli, creating a delicious blend of heat with a hint of sweetness. The lunch and dinner menus take their cue from rustic Italian influences — think wood-fired pizzas, innovative pastas, and mains like chicken Parmigiano. There’s also an impressive wine program, which runs anywhere between five to 10 percent below comparable restaurants in the area. Osio has a deep respect for his diners and this restaurant, which is evident in the high standard of food and service, and the sense of community and soul that inhabits this space. He notes that the totality of these features are just a small example of what has made this restaurant more approachable and a neighborhood favorite – and truly, a local bistro. CELEBRATING THE ART SCENE

Three milestone anniversaries commemorate Scottsdale’s commitment to the arts BY JENNIFER PARKS

o say it’s been a big year for the arts in Scottsdale might be an understatement. That’s because when it comes to the city’s art, Scottsdale is celebrating three huge milestone anniversaries: the sweet 16 of Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), 30 years for Scottsdale Public Art, and 40 years for Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The nonprofit Scottsdale Cultural Council, which oversees all three organizations, exists to “develop, advance, and deliver high-quality arts, cultural experiences, and opportunities in Scottsdale to residents, cultural institutions, artists, and visitors.” And deliver it does.

The Organizations SMoCA (www.smoca.org), which celebrated 16 years this past February, is Arizona’s only permanent museum dedicated solely to modern works of art, design, and architecture. Situated on 21 acres in downtown Scottsdale, it hosts 9 to twelve exhibitions each year. Outdoors, you’ll see the impact of Scottsdale Public Art (www.scottsdalepublicart.org), which helps make Scottsdale even more beautiful with numerous permanent and temporary public art installations throughout the city. Scottsdale Public Art will hold its own 30-year celebration Feb. 26, 2016, during its Canal Convergence event along the Scottsdale Waterfront. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts (www.scottsdaleperformingarts.org) showcases dance, music, theater, and film with more than 1,000 performances, educational programs, festivals, and other events each year. Its education and outreach programs reach nearly 20,000

children and adults each year, making it an integral contribution to the continued growth of the arts in our community.

The Celebration With multiple milestone anniversaries in one year, the Scottsdale Cultural Council continues to uphold its commitment to the advancement of the arts – and will be celebrating all of them at one major event this month, the ARTrageous Benefit Gala on Dec. 5, headlined by award-winning actor and comedian Martin Short. At this year’s gala, attendees will witness a 360-degree art experience and enjoy exhibitions on display at SMoCA, including Bruce Munro’s exciting light exhibit, Ferryman’s Crossing, comprised of SO SCOTTSDALE! |

SS_68_69Culture_Dec15.indd 68

shimmering rows of reflective compact discs lit by pulses of light. At the gala, a fascinating public art exhibition designed by local artist Jeff Zischke will be unveiled. This temporary installation, suspended above the walkway between SMoCA and Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, is called GemTones. It includes eight colorful, polygonal shapes with cut-out designs that resemble gems. High-powered LED lights will illuminate the sidewalk with gleaming, gem-colored, geometric patterns. Once unveiled, the public will be able to enjoy this exhibit throughout the winter season. The gala committee selected Jeff Zischke’s work after Scottsdale Public Art’s call for artists. “While all of the finalists were great, we felt Jeff’s work best represented our celebration of the three anniversaries,” says Gerri Smith, chair of the 2015 ARTrageous Benefit Gala and vice chair of the Scottsdale Cultural Council Board of Trustees. Proceeds from the gala benefit the variety of performances, exhibitions, and arts education and outreach programs presented by the Scottsdale Cultural Council and the programs of SMoCA, Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, and Scottsdale Public Art. “All three of our divisions have stepped up in a big way this year to be represented,” says Smith. “We’re encompassing exposure to our modern art exhibitions, viewing a new public art installation, and, as always, enjoying a wonderful performing artist.” To learn more about the Scottsdale Cultural Council’s initiatives, visit www. sccarts.org. The

Car Care Conundrum:

to Trust or Not to Trust?

Shahe Koulloukian isn’t interested in taking advantage of anyone. Ever. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. As the owner of Mazvo Auto Car Care Center, his philosophy is simple: to make a difference for those who are most typically victims of untrustworthy auto shops – namely, women and seniors. “Some people tell me that I’ve come up with a brilliant marketing strategy and market niche, but that actually annoys me,” Shahe says. “To me this is not brilliance or marketing; it’s doing what I believe in and doing what’s right. To me, that’s also good business.” He credits his outlook to his upbringing, and the influence of his grandparents, who were survivors of the 1915 Armenian genocide; most of their extended family perished at the hands of humankind at its worst. Not because they had done anything wrong, not because they were bad people, not because they had inflicted harm on others, but strictly because of their nationality. Shahe’s grandparents, he says, instilled in him the importance of tolerance and diversity, to respect and accept all people. “Right from the start, my goal and passion was to develop my business to make a difference for those who tended to be taken advantage of by large number of car businesses,” he states. But simply claiming to be honest, trustworthy, and straightforward means very little – after all, isn’t that what everyone says? So Shahe decided to put his money where his mouth is, so to speak, and created his free-of-charge, wildly popular “You Auto Know” car care clinics. They teach – and therefore, empower – anyone who wants to learn more about the fundamentals of auto repair, such as how to change a spare tire, jump start a car, check fluid levels, and understand what all the warning lights mean.

SS_70_73Cuisine_Cheers_Dec15.indd 73

But why is this education so important? “It’s easy to just raise your hands and say, ‘I don’t know, just fix it,’ and that’s what dishonest auto repair shops are banking on,” Shahe warns. “They tend to constantly offer low ball specials and low pricing to lure customers in. They also have artificially low hourly rates and pricing which is made up in non-transparent ways.” One of his favorite quotes is “The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” Unfortunately, this wisdom is not pervasive across the auto industry, and people often find themselves the victims of unscrupulous business practices. To help avoid this, Shahe offers these tips: • Free diagnostics charges are not “free.” • “Check engine light trouble code reading” is not diagnostics. • Low-ball pricing is the intent to lure you in. • “Hard sell” is done through scare tactics. • Beware of free oil changes for life. • Beware of $99 brakes. As a repair shop owner, Shahe finds the concept of swindling innocent people appalling – and that’s why he speaks out against it. “Consumers need to understand the games being played along with how to pick to honest, competent, caring repair shops. They’re out there, but sometimes hard to find,” he says. “Even if you don’t do business with me, I want you to seek out shops that are ethical, competent, high-quality, fairly priced, and truly care about their customers. Yes – you can get all of this from the right repair shop!” For more information, contact Mazvo Auto Car Care Center, 4610 North 7th Street, Phoenix, (602) 248-8711, www.mazvo.com

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’

Soak up quiet coastal life in picturesque Mendocino BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

M

endocino, about a three-hour drive north of San Francisco, is filled with diverse landscapes, from vineyards and rolling hills to redwood forests and rocky shores. Its temperate climate lends itself to vacationing any time of year (just be sure to pack layers!), and there are activities aplenty. Mendocino is a place where life slows down a bit, affording you the chance to take in stunning seaside scenery, peruse boutiques and galleries, and savor the local flavors of both food and wine.

The Drive to Mendocino As you head north on U.S. Route 101, you’ll pass through Sonoma Valley, home to undulating vineyards and some amazing wines. The town of Healdsburg is worth a stop to explore the quaint downtown area’s shops, restaurants, and, of course, wineries. Pop into Costeaux Bakery (www.costeaux.com) on Healdsburg Avenue for a slice of their award-winning Princess Cake, often garnished with holly for the holidays. As you leave U.S. Route 101 and wind across the countryside on state Route 128, you’ll pass by some of the country’s best organic wineries. The landscape transforms when you reach the towering redwoods in Navarro River Redwoods State Park. You soon end up on the Pacific Coast Highway just a few miles south of Mendocino Village.

Exploring Mendocino

A Luxury Inn Brewery Gulch Inn (www.brewerygulchinn.com) will make your Mendocino visit even more memorable. The quaint, 10-room inn was constructed on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean using 150-year-old eco-salvaged, firstgrowth, virgin redwoods pulled from the mud in nearby Big River. This boutique inn has accolades as a AAA Four Diamond property and has been a top hotel with both Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast. Certified by the Green Hotels Association, the inn blends environmental consciousness with a luxury experience. Your stay includes a gourmet breakfast and an evening “light dinner buffet” that features Northern California’s rich culinary bounty. Dinner always includes a selection of local wines and brews along with delectable food that is usually natural, organic, and local. Meals are served in the Great Room alongside a four-sided fireplace with picturesque views of Smuggler’s Cove.

The historic town of Mendocino Village, perched on the headlands above the ocean, boasts cafes and charming boutiques. Stop by the Village Toy Store, which is filled with European toys. Then, pop into The Gallery Bookshop, a cozy independent bookstore with spectacular ocean views. About 15 minutes north of Mendocino Village is Fort Bragg, home to Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens (www.gardenbythesea.org). With 47 acres overlooking the Pacific, this is one of only a few public gardens that reaches the coast. During December, thousands of twinkling lights fill the gardens. While in Fort Bragg, opt for dinner at Mendo Bistro (www.mendobistro.com) on Main Street. The locally sourced options include housemade pastas and hearty meals of duck, venison, quail, and seafood. You can’t leave the area without a wine tasting, and the famed Anderson Valley is just a short drive away. Here, you’ll find wonderful pinot noir at Lula Cellars and great sparkling wines at Scharffenberger Cellars and Roederer Estate. Whether you’re hunting for the best pinot, embarking on a whale watching excursion (yes, they have those too), or simply seeking a chance to slow down and relax, you’re sure to discover a bit of your own quiet paradise in Mendocino.

hen you think about it, what has happened to the GMC is remarkable. A brand once known as a hay hauler on farms is suddenly in the ranks of brands like Rolex and Prada. The Yukon XL Denali, the redesigned, full-size, sport utility vehicle has quickly become the ride for more brand-appreciative drivers. It also goes to show that, even though the full-size SUV market isn’t what it once was, there are still sufficient buyers to constitute an appealing market segment. Today, modern SUVs are primarily crossover vehicles built on platforms used for passenger cars. The Yukon XL Denali

DECEMBER 2015 |

SS_94_95Places_Wheels_Dec15.indd 95

95

is a throwback vehicle, among the few that are still built on a truck-like, body-onplatform chassis. Car-based SUVs certainly ride more comfortably, handle better, and get more impressive fuel economy, but traditional SUVs like the Yukon XL Denali easily out-muscle them, with true fourwheel drive (true meaning the driver must manually select this mode), 8,000-plus pounds of towing capacity, and a voluminous 62.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Yukon XL Denali’s fresh styling easily beats its rivals, and it is much betterlooking than the previous generation. The interior is classier, and there are more hightech electronic amenities, optional power fold-flat second and third-row seats, and advanced safety features. Beyond being amazingly quiet, my real-world fuel mileage wasn’t bad and actually close to the window-sticker numbers, which almost never happens. I got 15-plus mpg in the city and 19.2 mpg on the highway. My top-of-the-line four-wheel drive Yukon XL Denali was exemplary, with a powerful 420-horsepower, 6.2-liter, V-8 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Inside, many premium options come standard: perforated heated and cooled leather front seats, a heated steering wheel and second-row seats, a rearview camera, and a Bose CenterPoint Surround Sound audio system. The infotainment system also boasts an 8-inch color touch screen. New options for 2016 include an Enhanced Driver Alert Package, which adds active lane-keeping assist, forwardcollision alert, lane-departure warning, and vibrating seat alerts if you wander out of your lane. There are eight different 22-inch wheel choices and a foot-sensing power tailgate. So, for those who want and need maximum cargo and passenger capacity, combined with four-wheel drive, big-trailer towing capacity, and a luxurious interior, the 2016 GMC Yukon XL Denali is an excellent choice. Jim Prueter is a spokesperson for AAA, and his auto reviews and travel stories appear nationally in print and online. You can reach him at jmprueter@yahoo.com.

C Patio, a new luxury patio furniture purveyor in Scottsdale, is the latest hot spot to warm you up this winter with its custommade fire pits. Whether you’re looking for a unique holiday gift, or wanting to add a romantic centerpiece to your own backyard, CC Patio’s fire pits can be tailored to fit any personality, taste, or size. The colorful display of the charcuterie board at EVO is crafted with so many different, delicious flavors and textures, you may find yourself wondering where to dig in first. At $22, this swoon-worthy starter features a variety of artisan cheeses, cured meats, pickled veggies, and “house treats” – bone marrow, nuts, and corn on the cob are all fair game – alongside grilled Noble bread. Share this over glasses of wine, or let it be the first accompaniment to a lingering meal of Italian classics, like made-from-scratch pasta, with a modern twist. 4175 N. Cozy up with four delicious bowls of comfort

T

BY TARYN JEFFRIES

here’s something oh-so-comforting about a warm bowl of soup on a crisp wintry day. Steam wafts from the bowl, and the fragrance of familiar seasonal ingredients wrap around you like your favorite sweater. While we may not have snow and ice, we certainly get cooler, brisk temperatures this time of year. Here, we’ve sourced some of the tastiest soups in town for warming up when the chill strikes.

Roasted butternut squash often conjures images of cozying up on a cold winter day. The best butternut squash soups are ones that balance the sweet and savory notes of the squash, and Paul Martin’s version does that seamlessly with an unexpected ingredient.

CORNISH PASTY CO.

MAD GREENS

3800 N. Goldwater Blvd., Scottsdale 480.945.1220 www.cornishpastyco.com

Cornish Pasty Co. has expanded into four locations since it first opened in Tempe in 2005, and their signature pasties have never wavered in quality or taste. You’ll be welcomed into this cozypub-meets-modern-bistro by the fragrant, buttery scent of pasties. The restaurant features several traditional pasties (shepherd’s pie) as well as a few regionally inspired items (chicken tikka masala). Before diving into a pasty, enjoy Cornish Pasty Co.’s take on traditional, and some not so traditional, soups. Best Bowl: Cream of Leek, Potato, and Stilton This velvety version of cream of leek soup is a delectable take on a classic. Typically refined with a dollop of whipped heavy cream, the addition of Stilton – an English blue cheese – in this version imparts much more flavor than the original. The strong flavor of the cheese melds with those of the leeks, and the potato assists in the creamy finish.

MERCI FRENCH CAFE 7620 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale 480.947.2777 www.mercifrenchcafe.com

PAUL MARTIN’S AMERICAN GRILL

There’s no question that Merci French Cafe offers some of the best French cuisine in town. The contemporary decor is the perfect backdrop for the edible, made-daily artwork in the form of classic French pastries, sandwiches, and salads. From start to finish, the level of care and dedication to their culinary craft shines through in each from-scratch creation. Whether you opt for a classic French dish like duck confit or a more “American” option like crab cake, you’ll find a loving nod to the French in every bite. Best Bowl: French Onion au Gratin Where else would you (or should you) go for French onion soup than a French cafe? This soup can sometimes be prepared in such a way that it is heavy, a little greasy, and a little too boozy. That is never the case here; Merci’s take on this classic is light and airy with fragrant herbal notes and a delicate touch of white wine. The soup is then topped with housemade bread and Gruyere and Swiss cheeses. Try this on a rainy day, and, if you close your eyes, you just might think you’re in Provence.

MAD Greens is quickly gaining traction in the Valley as a great option for quick, healthy meal options. Their motto is simple and to the point, “Eat Better,” and they provide plenty of creative options to help you do just that. All the ingredients are prepped in-house and made fresh every day. Salad creations have clever names, but the kitsch ends there. The greens are serious about being healthy and filling – and the soups are, too. Best Bowl: Caribbean Chicken Ease your chill factor with this hearty, seasonal soup. A bowl is filling enough to be a meal, or you can order a smaller cup to accompany your greens for $2.50. Although the soup is creamy, it’s dairy-free (and gluten-free, too!) and comprised of tender chicken, sweet potatoes, carrots, and tomatoes, all simmered in a handcrafted chicken stock. White rice and red beans give the soup substance, while traditional jerk seasoning and a hint of molasses and coconut provide a spicy, yet sweet, kick.

6186 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.991.9342 www.paulmartinsamericangrill.com There is a quiet class at Paul Martin’s, from the airy space and soft lighting to the warm and attentive staff. The experience here encompasses everything you’d expect from a restaurant serving time-honored dishes such as steak frites and cedar plank salmon. The soups here are quite filling; pair one with an appetizer, enjoy one on its own, or order before a heavier entree if you dare! Best Bowl: Roasted Butternut Squash Roasted butternut squash often conjures images of cozying up on a cold winter day. The best butternut squash soups are ones that balance the sweet and savory notes of the squash, and Paul Martin’s version does that seamlessly with an unexpected ingredient – Sonoma sage pesto. The herbaceous flavor of the pesto cuts through the sweetness of the squash and elevates the earthy tones of the soup for a rich, silky flavor, while a garnish of croutons adds a scrumptious crunch.

HOORAY FOR HANNA

Swedish-inspired children’s clothing store, Hanna Andersson, opens at Kierland Commons BY CHELSEA YOUNG PHOTOS BY STEPHANIE CROSS

(Love Hanna), and Hanna Home, although the Scottsdale store caters only to baby and children’s clothing. Founders Gun and Tom Denhart began the company in Portland, Oregon, when they saw a need for softer, yet more durable, children’s clothing. Hanna Andersson uses only pure organic cotton grown without chemical pesticides or fertilizers and with no genetically modified organisms, so parents can rest assured their children are wearing high-quality clothing. Ryan Quintana, Hanna Andersson store manager at Kierland Commons, says when the store first opened, customers were not only sharing Hanna stories from as far back as 20 or 30 years ago, but also were sharing pictures of their babies and grandkids dressed in the brand from head to toe. For many Scottsdale customers, the new Hanna Andersson store is the first time they’re able to touch and experience the product in person before purchasing. Beyond being super soft, Hanna Andersson’s clothes are colorful – often with fun patterns that take cues from Nordic fashion – and easy to mix and match. When shopping for the little ones in your life, perusing through Hanna Andersson is sure to make your holiday season that much merrier.

T

hirty years ago, Hanna Andersson began as a catalog clothing brand for children, with the intent to make clothes more comfortable and kiddos happier. Today, it continues this legacy with its catalog and retail stores across the country – and now calls Scottsdale home. Hanna Andersson (www.hannaandersson.com) – known for its bold striped sleepwear, iconic dresses, and tees – opened its first retail store in Arizona at Kierland Commons Nov. 6. Since its beginning in 1983, the unique, Swedish-inspired brand has developed into one of the leading premier children’s lifestyle brands in the United States. Hanna offers clothing for babies through preteens, a women’s collection

No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
