With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color

line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

Summertime and the livin’ is … hot. But I didn’t have to tell you that, did I? In the creative world, many times our struggles become our inspiration. As such, the heat served as our inspiration for a few gems this month: cool bottles for hot days (page 76), island living right in your own backyard (page 50), and decor inspired by the Northeastern seaside (page 58). ARTFUL ENTREPRENEURSHIP A creative at heart, Gianna Nicole leads a multifaceted company that empowers others

A person with an entrepreneurial spirit has a knack for inspiring others. They are fueled by opportunities, collaboration and innovation. They are creators uninhibited by risk and they are natural-born leaders. They don’t just say, they do. Gianna Nicole has embodied this spirit since she was young.

“When I was in fifth grade, I wrote my first bucket list ever. The No. 1 thing it says on there is ‘travel the world as a photographer.’ It’s pretty spectacular to see that I had claimed this life for myself as a child,” Nicole reflects. Before she became the founder and CEO of Gianna Nicole

Pulse UP CLOSE Media (www.giannanicolemedia.com) – a boutique media house that offers digital marketing and production services to folks in the fashion, beauty and entertainment industries – she was a young girl with many creative outlets. Sketching, painting and taking pictures with her old Polaroid camera were some of Nicole’s go-to hobbies. As she got older, she dabbled in other mediums of artistic expression. While enrolled in classes at Paradise Valley Community College and Arizona State University, Nicole regularly picked the brains of her English professors or spent time in the schools’ art halls. She found refuge in things like creative writing and digital marketing, but mostly photography. “Finding creative ways to express myself has always been a need in my life,” she says. Beyond her professional pursuits, Nicole is a full-time mom. As soon as her three children came into the picture, Nicole knew what kind of parent they deserved – the kind that empowers them to reach for their goals and create real change. Leading by example for her children, Nicole pursued her goals and launched her own business in 2014. “I had worked very closely with many leaders in the entertainment and beauty industries over the years,” she says. “When I saw an opportunity to have my own voice and create my own lane in this crazy world, I jumped on it.” Her own lane, Gianna Nicole Media, is headquartered in Scottsdale’s Kierland Commons. Along with her team of multimedia strategists, Nicole offers a gamut of branding services to clients, namely young fashion models. From fashion styling on photo shoots to creative editing to curating electronic press kits, this creative entrepreneur and mom keeps a busy pace juggling her two worlds of career and kids. “If you want to build your brand into a household name and still have dinner on the table by 6 p.m., you just have to prioritize your life to make it happen,” says Nicole, noting that after the family nighttime routine, it’s back to work for her around 8 p.m. “Long nights turn into long weeks and even longer months, but in the same breath, I can easily say it’s the most rewarding part of my work, too. We’re all capable of living whatever life we claim; it’s all [in your] mindset.” Photography has always been Nicole’s favored creative medium. Throughout the years, she has honed this craft and become a sought-after children’s fashion photographer in search of the world’s next Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. With this aspect of her business, she travels a lot. “I’m like a little mama duck, collecting new kids everywhere I go,” she says. As part of this business, Nicole hosts Fashion Passport (www. fashionpassort.org), an annual retreat for children and teens in the modeling and entertainment industries and their families. The oneof-a-kind trip offers educational workshops with top photographers, fashion designers and modeling instructors. Fashion Passport – taking place on Italy’s Amalfi Coast in 2019 – is meant to teach young people to pursue their goals with a limitless mindset. Nicole’s own limitless mindset, the one she’s had since she

was a little girl, has enabled her to break down doors and run her own empire while raising three kids. And, she’s only 30 years old. “I’ve found the farther up the ladder I move, the more common resistance is to young, thriving women in business,” Nicole says. “However, I revel in the challenge of rewriting people’s perceptions and never forget to have a sense of humor about things. After all, everyone has the right to be wrong!” Nicole is the first to note that her industry is not all glamour, and that being an entrepreneur means putting in more hours than most, which is a part of the job rarely talked about. “I truly believe you’re either born with the soul of an entrepreneur, or you’re not. It’s easy to get excited by all the perks of being a business owner, like creating your own schedule, but you don’t always see the 24/7 grind they’re living to make that freedom possible.” Gianna Nicole Media and Fashion Passport are continuing to evolve. In fact, a New York office is already in the works, though Scottsdale will always be Nicole and her business’ home. “Although I travel a lot, nowhere else is home other than Arizona,” she says.


A Connoisseur of Color Rodney Gentry, stylist and color expert at Sachi Studios

Rodney Gentry is one of those people whose Midwestern charm and enthusiasm can’t help but rub off on you. And in his line of work, that’s certainly a plus. Gentry is possibly the Valley’s most adored hair stylist. Part of this comes down to the right products. Gentry only uses the very

This applies to everything, from daily shampoos to the color treatments that he uses, which are enzyme-based rather than peroxide-based. This means they enhance the condition of the hair as well as give it a wonderfully vibrant color. Color is Gentry’s true passion. Children’s book author Candice Imwalle illustrates the importance of healthy eating

With so many children’s books on the market that teach life lessons, Candice Imwalle was surprised to find that none tackled healthy eating. As a medical sales professional, she regularly encounters patients who suffer from illnesses caused by a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. In effort to help future generations from making poor health decisions, as well as to fill a void in children’s literature, she wrote Sir Morgan and the Kingdom of Horrible Food. The book introduces young readers to the Kingdom of Terrible Food, a place where residents have zero consequences for eating high-fat, high-sugar and high-calorie foods. This changes when a witch casts a spell on the townspeople so that they finally experience the negative effects of their unhealthy choices. Her educational book, full of whimsy and colorful characters – Princess Isabella was named by Imwalle’s daughter Isabella – helps ignite a dialogue between parents and children about the importance of good-foryou foods. Since publishing, Imwalle has shared her book in classrooms across the Valley. Her fictional, yet not-sofar-fetched story resonated with young listeners, many of whom even called out their parents’ unhealthy habits in the Q&A portion. “The message motivated them to tell their parents to be healthier,” Imwalle says. “It was very inspiring.” Imwalle’s children, Cameron (14) and Isabella (almost 11), ensured that the book’s vocabulary was comprehensive for a young audience. In addition to being co-authors, they are also advocates for health. “It’s quite humorous to be in a supermarket with them. They both police each other and even debate over which one eats healthier,” she laughs. With back-to-school season on the horizon, Imwalle reminds parents to remain strong, regardless of the pushback they may receive, when helping their children thrive. Food is a huge factor in that equation. “You know what’s best for your children. Help them make good food choices, but give them a little wiggle room to splurge on occasion. From a young age, Ken Peterson was immersed in the family real estate and construction business where he learned the importance of hard work and dedication. So it’s no surprise the motivated Brophy College Preperatory and Arizona State University alum entered the homebuilding industry right after college and now serves as the vice president of sales and marketing for Shea Homes, a family-owned homebuilding company that has Valley roots dating back to 1989. Inspired by his father, Peterson learned the ins and outs of the real estate industry along with the values of tenacity, dedication, honesty and respect. Peterson joined the Shea Homes family 24 years ago and has seen the company grow tremendously, building more than 26,000 homes across the Valley. The self-admitted “Nike snob” appreciates a professional, clean and classic look for workdays but never misses the opportunity to stock up on California beach shop T-shirts during summertime family vacations. Between running a team of mortgage professionals in the office and taking on husband and daddy duties at home, Bates’ style fluctuates between a professionally tailored wardrobe on weekdays and comfortable athleisure wear on the weekends. A navy custom-tailored suit serves as Bates’ go-to uniform, and he experiments with colored shoe laces and accent stitching when it comes to his career attire. In curating his overall style, Bates swears by hiring an expert (he works with Brothers Tailors) and admires George Clooney for his consistently classy look regardless of the occasion. “My career growth has been mirrored by my style; the better I’ve done professionally, the more professional my style has gotten and the more I’ve come to appreciate custom clothes,” Bates says. “I’m in dress clothes 75 to 80 percent of the time.”

What is your most prized possession? A Breitling watch that I worked very hard to get. It reminds me to stay focused and set goals. What is your favorite store? How do you transition from work to nighttime? During the week, work rolls into the evening with events, so I might not get the chance to transition until late. Nearly every child dreams of the kind of job they will have when they are an adult. For Kristina Guerrero, her dreams were big, and she overcame odds that were perhaps stacked against her during childhood. Ultimately, her success was written in the stars in the most literal sense. Guerrero is the host on pop culture and entertainment show The List that films here in the Valley, airs on KNXV Channel 15 in Arizona, and is syndicated in nearly 50 markets in the U.S. Guerrero’s career has taken her several places, but she grew up in a small farming town in the state of Washington as one of five children. Her hometown was rife with poverty and not much in the way of opportunities – being on welfare and food stamps was just a part of life. “I desperately wanted something better for my life,” Guerrero says. “My mom was a single mom, and my father was an alcoholic and in jail most of my life. We struggled a lot.” When she was five years old, Guerrero knew she was destined for something different than most kids. “While other kids were watching cartoons, I was watching Entertainment Tonight, and Mary Hart was my hero,” she says. “Early on, there was a God-given desire to succeed and to be driven. I felt that Hollywood was calling my name and that was where I was meant to be. My mom once gave me this nugget of encouragement – that I could be anything that I wanted. I took that nugget and I just went for it.” Watching her mom single-handedly raise five kids while taking public assistance had a profound impact. “It gave me an incredible work ethic. If I didn’t want to live that kind of life, I knew I was going to have to work really hard to get out of it. It also showed me the kind of strength a woman can have in order to survive, protect her family, and take care of herself.” Armed with undaunting tenacity, when Guerrero moved to Hollywood to pursue her dream, she felt she had nothing to lose. She earned an academic scholarship and attended the University of Southern California. Even in college, Guerrero was already working tirelessly toward her goal. “As soon as I got to USC, I knew in order to be great in front of the camera, I had to be great behind the camera,” Guerrero says. During college, she interned and paid close attention as she did everything from fetching coffee to handling scripts, learning everything she possibly could behind the scenes. She soon started writing and producing as well as interviewing celebrities. “Immediately after college, I had a wealth of knowledge and this

tenacity to get my foot in the door and not take ‘no’ for an answer.” One big opportunity that Guerrero found on her own accord was as co-host of The Rub, a multicultural show on CTV that began in 2004 and ran for a few years. “With that, I was able to get an agent who sent me to Access Hollywood,” says Guerrero, who was only a year out of college. “It was all divinely intended for me. It’s not supposed to happen that quickly and everything just started falling into place.” After that, she moved to San Antonio, Texas, to host a lifestyle morning show. It was there that she truly honed her craft. “I learned how to hold a show and learned to drive a show. I did that for three years with the intention of always returning to Hollywood because I wanted to be on red carpets.” Upon that return, she landed at Inside Edition where she remained for almost a year.


“E! called and by the time I was 27, I was a correspondent for E! News, which was the dream,” explains Guerrero, who was the first Latina host for the show, spending six years on it interviewing major stars, including Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock. She singles out George Clooney as her favorite celebrity interview so far because he treated her like an old friend, put her at complete ease, and spoke authentically. “He made me feel like I was the only person that mattered in that moment,” Guerrero says. In 2014, while at E!, Guerrero was nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Entertainment News Program category.

ARIZONA BOUND Behind the glitz and glamour, living in Los Angeles was a grind, although Guerrero didn’t realize it immediately. “I didn’t know it

until I had a baby. When you live in Los Angeles, it’s a lifestyle,” says Guerrero, noting the hectic pace of LA life. A few years ago, her agent called with the opportunity at The List in Phoenix, and Guerrero saw it as a way to take a proverbial fresh breath away from the craziness that can be La La Land. Although Guerrero initially thought of splitting time between Los Angeles and Phoenix, she and her husband – writer and producer Gibby Cevallos – decided they wanted to live in the Valley along with their young son. “When my agent first sent me to Phoenix, I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Guerrero says. “I packed up my family, moved to [the Valley], and absolutely fell in love! We just found there is no reason to go back to LA, unless absolutely necessary. “I love the community element, and I love that people sit on their front porches and wave to their neighbors,” Guerrero continues. “I love to see kids on their bikes, and we can walk to our neighbor’s house and watch the kids play in their front yard. I also love that there is parking at the grocery store,” she adds with a laugh. Adding to her already impressive repertoire, Guerrero has also worked as a producer on two of Eva Longoria’s short ESPN documentaries, including ¡Go Sebastien Go!, which had its premiere at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. “These were not necessarily about sports, but things that culturally happened around sports that really made a difference,” Guerrero says. “I connected with Eva because she and my husband have been friends for many years, and my husband is also a writer and producer. She called him and said, ‘There’s this amazing story, and I would love for you to come and produce on it.’ I looked at him and said, ‘I want to produce on it.’ A little bit of nepotism goes a long way, I guess.” Most recently, Guerrero has co-created and co-written, along with Cevallos, her first TV pilot script for Adulting, which is loosely based on Guerrero’s life with her girlfriends and their chaotic world. “The goal of my career has certainly been hosting, and it’s what I love to do,” Guerrero says. “One of the other things I want to do is be able to write and produce TV shows.” Currently, the script is being shopped around, and she is hopeful to make that pilot made one day. “What I’ve found is that life is unpredictable, and while I might have an idea of what I want for my future, the divine plan for me is usually way cooler,” Guerrero says. This all-new crossover utility vehicle takes adventure and style to new heights BY JIM PRUETER

On looks alone, the all-new Hyundai Kona easily wins the beauty contest. It’s as attractive as any auto in the entire realm of crossover utility vehicles, including the epochal and highly acclaimed Porsche Macan. In the case of Kona, its beauty is more than skin deep. Like other smaller Hyundai SUVs, Kona is named after a vacation spot, the Kona district on Hawaii’s Big Island. According to the Korean automaker, the name is intended to conjure images of the area – such as marine leisure sports and the aroma of Kona coffee. Inside, the subcompact interior – with 94 cubic feet of passenger volume and an additional 19 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seat – Kona feels larger than its segment competitors. I liked the clean, simple design of the interior, one that exudes style and quality, despite ample hard plastic surfaces. Kona occupies the entry-level rung of Hyundai’s crossover vehicle offerings (it’s smaller than the Tucson and Santa Fe) and is offered in four trim levels with a choice of standard frontwheel drive or optional all-wheel drive ($1,300).

All trim levels include a standard rearview camera; hill-start assist control; a tilt-telescopic steering wheel; Bluetooth capabilities; Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; keyless entry; and power windows, door locks and mirrors. Kona buyers also have a choice of two engines: The standard 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder that delivers 147 horsepower and is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, or a sportier 1.6-liter, 175-horsepower turbo four-cylinder. While driving, Kona delivers the best on-road dynamics among all vehicles I’ve tested in its class, thanks to zippy acceleration from my test car’s 1.6-liter engine when entering the highway or passing other vehicles. My time behind the wheel included the Big Island’s smooth roads with twists, rough roads with uneven pavement, and steep mountain roads that climbed to 7,000 feet. Simply put, the driving experience is more than impressive. Overall, the Hyundai Kona is a terrific new crossover with virtually nothing to fault and just about everything to like. And when it comes to overall value, it’s nearly impossible to beat.

Combining mountainside luxury with alpine adventure, Telluride, Colorado, offers a summertime escape unlike any other BY CHELSEA YOUNG

It’s been said that Telluride, Colorado, got its name from the phrase “to hell you ride,” a warning about the arduous journey miners took to reach the remote town. Though, in reality, with its blue skies, undulating landscape and small-town charm, Telluride is more akin to a mountainous paradise – a true heaven on earth. Nestled within a canyon in Southwestern Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, Telluride sits at an 8,750-foot elevation surrounded by the largest concentration of 13,000- and 14,000-foot peaks in North America. A welcome escape from the Valley’s summer heat, high temperatures average 85 degrees in August and 77 degrees in September. The former mining town eventually became a ghost town before reinventing itself into a world-class vacation destination with plenty of alpine adventure trails as well as a booming festival season. Telluride was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1964, and, today, has only 2,000 year-round residents. While just eight blocks wide and 12 blocks long, Telluride is packed with treasures, from colorful, Victorian-era homes to boutiques, art galleries and gourmet restaurants. Perhaps Telluride’s crown jewel is its gondola. As the only transportation system of its kind in North America, the free service connects Telluride to neighboring Mountain Village (up the mountain at 9,540 feet), where most of the resorts are as well as additional dining and shopping.

The New Sheridan Hotel offers a trifecta of F&B enjoyment: an indoor bar, a chophouse restaurant (also great for brunch), and a rooftop bar with views to boot. Nearby, two other can’t-miss eateries are 221 South Oak, of which chef/owner Eliza Gavin appeared on Top Chef. The restaurant is lauded for its two seasonal menus, one a mélange of seafood, game and poultry with farm-fresh accents and the other an impressive all-vegetarian selection. The other is La Marmotte, an intimate retreat perfect for a romantic night, with French-inspired fare that changes nightly in a building that was once an ice house. Located at the top of the gondola, Allred’s is a must for sunset views during drinks or dinner. The cozy atmosphere overlooking the landscape below is the perfect place to tuck in for some locally influenced dishes like a juniper-bourbon marinated elk strip loin or a roasted Colorado rack of lamb.

Do Of course, it wouldn’t be Colorado without some serious outdoor adventure. Though the city is well-known for its 2,000 skiable acres, the months outside of ski season (late April through early November) offer plenty to do beyond the slopes. Telluride is packed with trails primed for hiking, biking and running. An easy morning walk is simply on the trail following the San Miguel River, which snakes along the side of town, by a park and toward Bridal Veil Falls, giving you a picturesque view of them from afar. A locally loved hiking trail, with a major waterfall reward (i.e., photo ops) at the end, is Bear Creek. This 4.6-mile hike is mostly meandering with a few uphill climbs, but the altitude is what makes this seemingly easy trek more challenging. Alternatively, give your feet a rest while scaling some major mountain terrain on an open-air tour with Telluride Outside. The four-wheel drive tours take riders up 13,000 feet, traveling old mining roads through the mountains and ghost towns. The ride is full of fun facts and, fair warning, lots of bumps, twists and turns.

Play Telluride is affectionately known as the “Festival Capital of the Southwest” for its plethora of summer and fall celebrations. Notable festivals include the balloon, wine, film and jazz festivals as well as the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, held annually in September. Interspersed throughout festival season (June through October) are other activities, including a Thursday night art walk, movies under the stars, a Friday farmers market, and live music.

Getting There By car, Telluride is a 485-mile drive from the Phoenix area. By plane, fly to Denver then connect to Montrose Regional Airport, from which Telluride Express provides service from Montrose directly to your hotel in Telluride on a scenic, 65-mile journey. Founded in Nebraska nearly a decade ago, Pitch Pizza began as a pizza-and-salad concept, though the menu quickly evolved to include pastas, chef specialties and seasonal items. But, at its core, Pitch, which expanded into Scottsdale in 2017, knows good pizza. It starts with the dough, which begins with a secret ingredient of Caputo flour imported from Italy. Then, it’s all about fresh ingredients. Take The Doc ($21), named for a longtime patron. This pie features olive oil infused with roasted garlic and red pepper flakes drizzled onto the dough, and it’s topped with mozzarella, goat cheese, house-cured pancetta, asparagus, peperonata (an Italian vegetable medley), and housemade fennel sausage before being baked in a coal-fired oven. Ocean Vodka Ocean Vodka is the only vodka in the world distilled from organic sugar cane and blended with deep ocean mineral water. The spirit is crafted in Maui and made with water that originated from a glacier that melted near Greenland more than 2,000 years ago. Once the water is brought to the surface on the Kona coast, it is organically purified and desalinated through a proprietary, natural filtration process. Glenmorangie Pride 1981 This is Glenmorangie’s most sublime single malt whisky to date. Characterized by the longest extra-maturation period of any Glenmorangie variation, Pride 1981 is a rare, limited-edition liquor with only 1,000 bottles available. Laurence Brabant, a French designer, teamed up with fine crystal glassware company Baccarat to create a round vessel with glass on the front and back and a circle of wood sandwiched in between. It retails for $3,600 and is currently behind the bar at the Scotch Library at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa.

Hennessy Paradis Impérial Inspired by a blend of rare cognacs ordered by Tsar Alexander I of Russia’s mother as a birthday gift for him in 1818, Hennessy’s master blender Yann Fillioux created Paradis Impérial, which is a

An expression of that local terrain, this 100 percent blue agave tequila blends herbal, citrus and spice notes indicative of the lowlands with fruit notes of cherry, pear and peach from the highlands. Don Julio 1942 Produced in small batches and aged for a minimum of 2 1/2 years, Don Julio 1942 is handcrafted in tribute to the year that Don Julio González began his tequila-making journey. The rich caramel and chocolate nose gives way to a warm oak and vanilla taste with hints of roasted agave. The bottle is reminiscent of an agave leaf and hard to miss. Don Julio Real While 1942’s size is striking, it would be remiss not to also note Real, one of the few extra añejo tequilas available on the market today. Marcellino Ristorante pours up a drinkable work of art with the Italian Passion

In addition to an impressive wine list, each bottle chosen by Italian native and award-winning chef Marcellino Verzino himself, Marcellino Ristorante also boasts an ever-evolving mixology menu. In developing the “Summer Sensations” menu (available at least through Labor Day), the bar’s mixologists looked to chef Verzino’s theory behind his food – creating visual and taste sensations with only a few fresh ingredients and lots of garden herbs – for inspiration. The Italian Passion ($15), named for the exuberance and life chef Verzino exudes, is that vision executed in a glass. It starts with Patron Rocca Silver Tequila, a premium liquor made using a centuries-old process wherein a two-ton volcanic stone wheel breaks down agave fibers and releases the subsequent juice that will become tequila. The result is a very complex and distinctly earthy flavor. To enhance the “passion” quotient in the cocktail, quite literally, the mixologist combines the tequila with organic passion fruit juice and freshly squeezed lime in the shaker. The fruits add a bright tartness and flowery aroma into the mix, while a drizzle of organic honey ramps up the sweet notes in the tequila. Then, the contents are shaken. Rather than pour the mixture over ice, the bar team freezes edible flowers and water to make a colorful, eye-catching ice sphere. The contents are poured in a rocks glass over the sphere, allowing it to melt just enough to enhance the outrageous beauty of the flowers. Executive chef Chris Fisher is all about bringing a little upscale flavor – and new savory options – to the comfort food-focused menu at gastropub Kelly’s at Southbridge.

First, thank you for serving our country. Can you share some of your military background? While I started cooking as a young child thanks to my Aunt June, I come from a military family. I enlisted in the Navy at 17 years old, serving tours in Panama and Iraq during Desert Storm, and then serving again in Afghanistan after 9/11 in 2001. How did you formally transition to being a chef? I earned my business degree from Indiana University and then decided to attend culinary school. My first big break came when I moved to Los Angeles and earned a catering captain position at Spago by Wolfgang Puck in Beverly Hills. There, I had the opportunity to produce dinners for the Academy Awards, Emmy Awards and movie premieres. When did you make your way to Arizona? In 2013, my best friend moved to the Valley and raved about it. When the house next door to him became available, I moved out here and we became neighbors. Since making my way to Arizona, I’ve helped develop menus for Ak-Chin UltraStar Multi-tainment Center, Blue Clover, Dorian and more. What is your vision for the menu at Kelly’s? I joined Kelly’s in March 2018, and my plan isn’t to reinvent the wheel. Instead, I want to take the pub fare and give it some nuance, elevating our dishes but still keeping our comfort food vibe. Oh, and adding brunch is a priority this fall. What is your favorite thing to make when not working? Reservations! Seriously, I love nothing more than sampling other local chefs’ menus. My favorites are Southern Rail, Beckett’s Table, Clever Koi, Pig & Pickle and Chula Seafood. What would we be surprised to know about you? Don’t let my bearded biker look fool you. Innovative BuyerHunt and BuyerHunt Agent apps give exclusive access to new homes on the market

Imagine finding your dream home. Now, imagine finding it before anyone else knows it’s on the market. This is the exciting, cutting-edge real estate scenario that BuyerHunt founder Greg Hague is offering potential homebuyers. The brand-new BuyerHunt and BuyerHunt Agent apps, which just hit the real estate market in June, are poised to change the industry in a way that benefits homebuyers and sellers. Response has been tremendous. In the first few days of BuyerHunt’s premier, there were already 143 buyers signed up for the app. With a rich and diverse background in real estate, including becoming the No. 1 Christie’s Luxury Home brokerage in the Southwest, Hague set out to create a paradigm shift in the real estate industry. And he is hopeful to revolutionize the real estate industry in a way that benefits buyers and sellers. The BuyerHunt apps were created as a way to challenge third-party companies that are not necessarily part of the real estate profession, but rather publicly traded entities looking to monetize information shared by listing agents.

“The idea was that if I could find a way to get buyers to come to our profession first, then we would have a chance to take back the buyers,” says Hague, noting that BuyerHunt provides the opportunity for buyers to get access to home listings firsthand by avoiding those not directly involved in the listing process. “Every buyer wants to find their perfect home and get a good buy,” Hague says. “The best way to do that is to be the first to know about newly listed homes and learn about them before they are on MLS.” Hague says the app for potential buyers gives them a two-day advantage on a new home listing. “BuyerHunt is also a way for home sellers to showcase their homes to a massive database of buyers on the same day they list it,” he adds. By providing one version of the app for agents and one for buyers, BuyerHunt creates an advance notification system where an agent can put up a brand-new listing and potential buyers don’t have to wait to find it on MLS. Hague provides an example of the magic. “If a buyer notes that they’re looking for a certain type of home in a certain price range in a certain area, they would get pinged on their app,” Hague says. In minutes, a potential buyer can click the phone number to call the listing agent. The app also has the ability to set an appointment to tour the home, and the agent will get that information directly on their phone. By giving buyers advance listing notice and sellers the opportunity to get a group of interested buyers almost immediately, the homebuying and home selling processes may start moving much more quickly with BuyerHunt and BuyerHunt Agent. “If I can technologically pull it off, this will be a major game changer,” Hague says.
