ugust. A month that, at least in Arizona, kind of makes you want to run for the hills, quite literally. By now, it’s no secret that we’re seemingly caught in a never-ending cycle of hot and hotter. Add to that the imminent monsoons, and conditions are ripe for a get-me-outta-here mentality, or at least an attitude of grin and bear it. As I was thinking about what this month entails, I thought of back to school, back to routine, the nearing end of summer, the promise of the Valley’s bustling social scene coming back to life very soon (hello, event season!). And as I thought more about August, I actually researched the word – as editors are wont to do. The adjective august, by definition, means distinguished, respected, impressive and noble, marked by majestic dignity or grandeur. Well, this interpretation certainly grabbed my attention. August also means celebrated. So this month, I invite you to celebrate, even if you have to grin and bear it. Celebrate the people in our community who are making a difference, like Robert LaMacchia, who started a nonprofit organization to help kids learn life lessons through golf (page 29). Or Richard Padgett, who’s passing along financial know-how to students so they’re better equipped for the future (page 34). Celebrate Jeff Herzog, one of the founding fathers of digital marketing as we know it. He helped advance search engine optimization (you know, the factor that affects what results appear when we search things like “August” online), which powers so much business growth today. Talk about being august! Read about how he continues to shape the technological industry on page 46. And then there are the small victories in life to celebrate, such as cooling down with an ice cream cocktail (page 98), sharing a chef’s board (page 100), admiring an architectural masterpiece (page 51), exploring Arizona’s beauty (page 80), and treating yourself to a spa day (page 52). t the tender age of three, Robert LaMacchia discovered his passion for golf. His grandfather was an avid golfer whose love for the game was quickly passed down to his grandson. “My grandfather carved a wooden golf club from a fallen tree branch in my yard,” LaMacchia reminisces. “He dug a hole in the yard and handed me the carved club, encouraged me to focus, aim and strike the ball.”

A wooden branch carved with love would be the first of many clubs held in LaMacchia’s grip. It would also be a catalyst for a lifelong pursuit and a way make a difference in others’ lives. “The first shot I ever hit? A hole in one! It was a moment in time that will last with me a lifetime,” he says. Born and raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin, LaMacchia and his family frequented the Valley to visit his grandparents. During every visit, LaMacchia felt a pull to the majestic desert landscape and vast vistas. The handful of lavish golf courses eventually enticed him to call Arizona home. He later attended Grand Canyon University, earning a degree in finance and economics and currently works as a financial advisor with Clark & Associates Financial Services in Scottsdale. While LaMacchia enjoys helping people strategize for their retirement, nothing can quite compare to the enjoyment that golf brings him. “For me, golf is more than playing 18 holes,” he says. “Within those 18 holes are challenges and opportunities, highs and lows.” LaMacchia learned patience and perseverance during his upbringing with golf. His grandfather’s wise words – that anything is possible through hard work and belief in yourself – provided LaMacchia the wherewithal to never give up. Even on the days when the ball refused to meet the hole, he never quit. Such a profound life lesson during his fundamental years of growth fueled him as an adult to give back to others, especially children. His cherished memories golfing with his grandfather and the invaluable lessons he gained from the sport propelled LaMacchia to start his own nonprofit. In August 2015, Klubz Fore Kidz was born. Open to ages up to 19, Klubz Fore Kidz (www.klubzforekidz.org) aims to inspire the next generation by offering the opportunity to learn the game of golf – to those who may not otherwise have the means to do so – by providing golf clubs, balls and bags to youth. The nonprofit

This summer, LaMacchia and his team strategized a plan to deploy the clubs so that they reach as many kids as possible. Additionally, the team made connections with many golf courses around the Valley, which will house events throughout the year for children and their families to attend.

develops relationships with businesses, golf courses, schools and other organizations to give back to communities, one golf club at a time “Through golf, I want children to learn about honesty and humility, understand competition and [forge] lifelong friendships,” LaMacchia says. “I hope that children are able to learn how to fight through the tough times and excel through the process of life.” In just one year, Klubz Fore Kidz has made many strides as a nonprofit organization. A generous outpour from the community has provided Klubz Fore Kidz with 500 clubs in donations. These donations enable children who wish to participate in

LaMacchia and a team of volunteers have been hard at work since the nonprofit’s inception and continue to plan for the future. In October, Klubz Fore Kidz will host an event where they hope to raise $10,000 in addition to 1,000 golf clubs. The event will also select two Valley high schools and donate $5,000 to each school’s golf program. “I love to see a child successfully reach a goal, be better than they thought they could be, or see them enjoy the experience of learning and teaching another,” LaMacchia says. “I want Klubz Fore Kidz to be an outlet, an opportunity for kids to learn that they can do anything they want and put their minds to.” A wooden club carved with love was LaMacchia’s first foray into the game. Since then, he has held countless others on golf courses throughout the country, with his favorite course in the world being none other than Scottsdale’s Gainey Ranch greens. “Gainey Ranch has a special place in my heart because I played at Gainey four days before my grandpa passed away,” LaMacchia says. “I shot 66 that day, my lowest round out there. Seeing how impressed my grandpa was when I got home to tell him makes this one of my favorite rounds of golf of all time.” From grandfather to grandson, the love of the game was passed down. And now, LaMacchia is using the game of golf for a greater good, igniting a similar love among the community’s youth and new opportunities for personal growth through the game.

ocal singer Talia Roya started her musical journey when she was four years old. Growing up, she was always dancing to different beats, writing and learning music, and finding her own style – which she says is influenced by cinematic themes, rock and blues. Fast-forward a few years and Roya has made her life what she always dreamed. She has a recently released new single, an EP and is working on new music set to debut as another EP this fall. “I’ve never known a life without music,” Roya says. “Performing and making music has always been a passion of mine.” Roya has played at several iconic venues around the Valley, including Crescent Ballroom, Rebel Lounge and Celebrity Theatre. Roya’s influences include Stevie Nicks and Florence Welch of Florence and The Machine, as well as any artist that is as expressive as them. “I would absolutely love to continue playing at these venues, as well as others around the Valley,” Roya says. “I love to do what I do, and would love to do it on a wider scale and reach a broader audience.” Roya’s recent single, Let Me See It, can be purchased through iTunes. FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHIES Richard Padgett spends time to help others save money BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

ichard Padgett was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. “My mom raised my sister and me on her own for many years,” Padgett says. “As you can imagine, money was tight.” As a result, the concept of saving was instilled in Padgett at a young age. “It wasn’t until my high school economics teacher taught a 401(k) lesson to our class that I saw the real potential in starting to save early on,” says Padgett, who got a job as a bank teller while still in high school to start saving for college. Turns out, Padgett had both a knack for saving and investing. Fast-forward 20 years, and Padgett is the vice president of Washington Federal’s growing Equipment Finance Division at just 36 years old. In a nod to his own journey, he also oversees the company’s Washington Federal Financial Scholars Program in Arizona. “Through the program, we are able to use interactive technology – simulations, avatars and gaming – to bring complex financial concepts to life for high school students, many of whom are in the same situation I was as a kid,” Padgett says. According to Padgett, more than 8,300 students have graduated from the program company-wide since Washington Federal partnered with Everfi, a leading education technology company.

What do kids learn through the program? It runs the gamut from credit scores, insurance, credit cards, student loans, mortgages, taxes, stocks, savings and – of course – 401(k) plans. Any big success stories? The teachers and students at Metro Tech High School in west Phoenix have really championed the program. So much so, in fact, that Washington Federal and our partner, Everfi, hosts a graduation for them each year, and I recently joined the school’s Banking and Finance Advisory Board to help bring personal finance skills further into the classroom. You’ve been saving a long time – any splurges? I have one vice: performance cars. My kids and I are regulars at Cars & Coffee events in Scottsdale, which brings together automotive enthusiasts in locally organized, family friendly community meetups. Originally from Israel, he credits his culture to influencing his wardrobe – and attitude. “Israel has many conflicts, yet at the same time we value freedom,” Azoulay says. “We’ve grown to appreciate expression and passion in everyday living. I feel that it is expressed in our personal style, food, art and experiences. It is common for Israelis to travel the world and experience different cultures that influence our true style.” These values continue to stay with him; he admits his style hasn’t changed much since moving to Arizona in 2009. “I love living in Scottsdale, but only the weather influences my style.” As a principal of Regal American Homes and Azoulay Builders, his work days are often spent walking job sites, requiring a more pragmatic wardrobe than typical business garb. “I’m in a Lululemon shirt and shorts Monday through Friday,” Azoulay says. “On weekends, I prefer skinny jeans and T-shirts.” His fashion choices are not only sharp; they are smart. isa Bell wears many hats, including businesswoman, charity soul, wife, friend and fashion persona. “There is just something about a great outfit that can transport you to another time, era or memory,” Bell says. “That’s what I love the most about fashion; you have the chance to be whoever you want to be and create this persona of what you want. It’s a pretty great way to express yourself.” Bell, who studied fashion design at Northern Arizona University, loves to look at trends and see what is happening as well as what keeps coming back around. “If you take a really good look, you see that most trends never go away. They reinvent themselves. Usually the same concept, but it has a variation. Fashion has no limits, so why should the trends?” Bell is also a SMoCA Mix committee member and loves dressing for such occasions. “For this year’s event, I let my accessories do the talking. I had gold headwear and an arm band, and since they were pretty loud I stuck with a clean, flowy gown. I love mixing and matching patterns, textures and metals.”

I

t’s a Monday morning and the sun is just rising over the McDowell Mountains. A man briskly walks up the Bell Pass trailhead, just as the first rays of sunlight hit a nearby saguaro. Most mornings, Jeff Herzog can be seen hiking these paths. It’s a habit that leaves him clearheaded and ready to tackle anything and everything when he heads to the office. While the average person would not recognize him, Herzog has an incredible entrepreneurial back story – and is called a visionary by some. This year marks Herzog’s 20th year in the world he is so passionate about: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and digital marketing. In the late ’90s, the world was exploring a new technology called the internet. With an incredible amount of knowledge at users’ fingertips, the public was just learning how to operate and search the web. At its infancy, SEO was just a way that businesses could attempt to appear in search results. Brands started noticing that the higher the site ranked in search, the more visibility their products had across the web. Herzog recognized the value in appearing on the first page during a search and those who used new search strategies to target their audiences could more effectively influence consumers. In 1998, Herzog launched the now internationally known iCrossing in Scottsdale, the same year that Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google. As Google attracted a growing number of internet users, Herzog’s digital agency became more in demand. “People sometimes ask me if I predicted the internet boom,” Herzog says. “I always say no one can predict the future. You can only follow your passions, be smart how you build a business and surround yourself with talented people. “I had a belief that search would change the advertising landscape, and my goal was to connect consumers with brands, utilizing what I knew about search optimization.” Over the next 10 years, Herzog grew the search engine marketing company into an international power agency, with additional locations in New York City, Chicago,

San Francisco, London and Munich. In 2010, the organization was sold to Hearst Media for $325 million. In regards to the sale, Herzog says, “With iCrossing I loved what I built, but in the end I felt we were losing the innovation, the forward-thinking, the focus on the people and products. I was seeing the power that search and social marketing was going to have in the future with brands. The time was right to move on to my next big venture.” A few years later, this next big venture was born as ZOG Digital. Herzog felt that ZOG Digital had to be the future of the search agency experience. “I knew that we had to build this organization around thought leadership and flawless execution,” he says. “We had to bring in industry experts that were the foundation of SEO, were leaders within organizations like Facebook, and had worked with big brands at top New York agencies. “I’d have to bring the best of the best to the desert and cultivate a company that could not only cater to the most influential brands but show them how to lead the digital space.”

As the father of four daughters, he enjoys staying active with them, whether on the tennis court, in the pool or corralling any one of their four dogs. “Between my beautiful wife and daughters, I am surrounded by strong,

independent, intelligent women. I’d love to say they all don’t have me wrapped around their little fingers but that would be a lie,” Herzog jokingly says. Beyond spending time with his family, Herzog is an avid hiker, practices hot yoga and appreciates the outdoor explorations that Phoenix has to offer. Born and raised in New Jersey, Herzog has a contagious love of the Arizona lifestyle. “Could I have founded my past two organizations in Manhattan or Los Angeles? Of course I could have. But nothing compares to my appreciation of the Phoenix area.” So what does the future hold for a tech titan and digital visionary such as Herzog? While some would call him a success story, he is quick to point out that is not what he wants to be known for and not where his aspirations lie. In fact, he, instead, offers insights into the future, the incredible digital innovations that are occurring, and the aspirations he has for his organization. “In 1998, I couldn’t have predicted the explosion of advancements we’ve seen in just the past few years,” Herzog says. “Search has changed the way we interact with brands, consume information and purchase products. Everything from books to vehicles can be purchased at the touch of a button and arrive at our doors. “The way brands can influence us, change our world views and create emotional connections through digital content is truly amazing. Just the concept of a mobile device that can sit in my back pocket but can be pulled out to influence my dining choices is a thing of beauty.” So, moving forward, how will brands utilize these digital innovations, exactly? “The problem brands now face is harnessing that power,” he says. “My team at ZOG is providing that exact service for our clients and is doing it well.” While Herzog’s history is intriguing, his passion is infectious. And while he doesn’t easily admit it, he could be considered one of the Valley’s crown jewels of business leaders, and there’s no doubt that he’s one of the founding fathers of digital marketing.

What once served as Wright’s winter home and studio now operates his namesake foundation and school of architecture. Rooted in simple, modern aesthetics, Taliesin West was built as an extension of the desert, embodying Wright’s architectural principles of sustainability, innovation and democratic design. Beyond a reprieve from the heat, the pool served as a safety precaution; Wright placed pools and fountains throughout the property to aide bucket brigades in case of a fire. arry Fitzgerald is many things – a sports icon, a dedicated philanthropist, a hair god. But during his Eighth Annual Fitz’s Supper Club, Celebrities at YOUR Service – hosted at Dominick’s Steakhouse Aug. 29 – Fitzgerald will add one more skill to his Hall of Fame resume: comedian. Well, sort of! Fitzgerald will, indeed, make a few jokes, but will actually play more of the host role. He’ll welcome several of his friends from the stage and screen, including four-time NBA champion turned actor and comedian John Salley, who, along with several others, will join Fitzgerald and his teammates to help raise funds for The Larry Fitzgerald First Down Fund during his annual Supper Club event. Whether its slapstick, stand-up or sketch comedy, all of which will be performed during the event, Fitzgerald’s goal is for everyone to be in stiches (in a good way!). In addition to the new element of comedy this year, guests can expect amazing food, familiar famous faces and, of course, lots of Fitzgerald all night long.

“We are excited to be helping Larry with his event for another year. Scottsdale Public Art activates storefronts with art and intrigue BY NICOLE ROYSE

hroughout select locations in Scottsdale (and beyond), passersby can enjoy the latest in an art installation series titled IN FLUX. Launched in 2010 by Scottsdale Public Art, IN FLUX activates vacant storefronts with art installations created by local artists. The current installation is known as IN FLUX: Linda Enger Cycle 6. In Scottsdale, these exciting art installations – ranging in mediums from painting to sculpture and mixed media – can be seen at Marshall Square, Scottsdale Fashion Square, The Pavilions at Talking Stick and Miller Plaza, highlighting work from an impressive list of artists which includes: Chelsea Bighorn, Jeffrey DaCosta, Malena Barnhart, Linda Enger, Xandriss, Danielle Wood, Elijah Bourque, Matthew Briggs, Garrett Johnson, and Luke Kautz. The Pavilions at Talking Stick feature Chelsea Bighorn’s Feathered 11. In this, she has created a series of warrior female figures comprised of patterns found on quilts created by her family through the generations. Also at The Pavilions, Jeffrey

DaCosta has created 18 free-standing deer silhouette sculptures painted with florescent, ultraviolet, light-sensitive paint as a metaphor for the way technology has changed the way we see the world. As the sun sets, hidden UV lights illuminate the herd, titled Decoys, creating a scene of deer viewed with thermal imaging. At Old Town Scottsdale’s Marshall Square, artist Malena Barnhart’s vibrant collage – created by an intricate spider web from thousands of repurposed girls’ stickers – is on display, titled Reticulation. Also on display at this location is Linda Enger’s Emergent, a vibrant mixed media installation exploring how we are affected

by seasonal changes and the nuances of nature. Here, you can also view installations by Xandriss and Danielle Wood. While at Scottsdale Fashion Square, visitors can enjoy Topo, a responsive art installation that features three cloud-like structures, a water structure and moving lights created by Matthew Briggs, Garrett Johnson and Luke Kautz. As mall-goers move around the artwork, the lights respond, creating colorful reflections around the space. Find this installation on the lower level at the Neiman Marcus Court. IN FLUX has continued to grow, partnering with 11 organizations, and can also be found in Chandler, Glendale, Gilbert, Mesa, Phoenix and Tempe. “IN FLUX offers new perspective on the connections between community organizations, city governments, local businesses, artists and audiences,” says Donna Issac, the director of IN FLUX. WHEN DID YOU GET PASSIONATE ABOUT FOOD? I come from a long line of foodies. In fact, I delighted in sweetbreads, foie gras and even escargot as a child, thanks in great part to some amazing culinary travels with my grandmother and great uncle. I remember wanting to be a chef as young as eight, so I started by taking home economics courses offered in middle school. Freshman year, my life changed forever when Kingman High School became one of the first schools in Arizona to offer a Fine Food Arts Program. Ours was led by Michael Gaul, an award-winning retired chef who ran world-renowned kitchens nationwide, including the famed Chasen’s Restaurant in Beverly Hills. He became my mentor, eventually helping me to win an Arizona cooking competition that earned me a nearly full culinary college scholarship.

IS DESEO YOUR FIRST ENTREE INTO HIGH-END RESORT DINING? Not by a longshot. In fact, I’ve spent most of my career working in amazing resort kitchens. While still in school, I worked under chefs Charles Wiley and Beau Macmillan at elements at the Sanctuary Resort as well as with then-chef de cuisine Ben Ramirez at Top of the Rock Restaurant at The Buttes. Eventually, I made my way to Copperwynd Resort, where I would become chef de cuisine at Alchemy (now Flourish).

twenty6’s Prickly Pear Margarita packs a locally sourced punch BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

here are just 81 JW Marriott hotels and resorts across more than 4,000 destinations. And one of them happens to be right here – the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa. “The JW Marriott Desert Ridge was the 26th resort to open under the JW luxury brand,” says Jamie Baize, the resort’s restaurant manager. “In 2013, we reimagined our Vista Lounge into a craft cocktail bar called twenty6 in honor of our place in Marriott lore.” Among the best-loved aspects of twenty6 is the bar’s focus on using locally sourced ingredients. “The Prickly Pear Margarita is a great example,” Baize says. “Since prickly pears are synonymous with and indigenous to Arizona, it made sense to offer our own take on this uniquely desert drink.” According to Baize, the cocktail starts by combining the fresh, fantastically fuchsia fruit with sugar and simmering until the ingredients come together. The result is a bright syrup that tastes like a cross between sweet raspberry and kiwi, with a hint of watermelon. “We then blend that syrup with the resort’s Maestro Dobel Tequila, which was hand-chosen by our general manager and is a blend of reposado, añejo and extra añejo tequilas,” Baize says. his summer, nearly 50 years after the original Pininfarina-styled Fiat 124 Spider roadster launched in Turin, Italy, Fiat revives the legendary nameplate. The original Fiat 124 Spider came to the U.S. in 1968, and 170,000 were sold when it was discontinued in 1983. There are 8,000 still registered in the U.S. today and 40 percent of those are owned by millennials and Gen Xers. That 124 Spider was a front-engine, rear-drive, two-seat roadster that was as charming and lovable as Italian flair can get. Designers of the new 124 Spider went to great lengths to re-establish that

look, feel and thrilling drive experience. For its product, the folks at Fiat looked east, to the people who know a little bit about small roadsters — namely, Mazda, who has put nearly 1 million MX-5 Miatas on the road over the past 26 years. The new 124 is basically a Miata, reskinned and with an Italian accent. The vehicles are built alongside each other in Hiroshima, Japan. Outside, the look is classic Italian. The grille is hexagonal with honeycomb mesh, flanked by deep-set headlamps with LED surrounds. The rear makes a strong presence but reminds me more of a Viper. Inside, the interior looks as though it was lifted intact from the Miata but with Fiat badging. I give the nod to Fiat for upgraded leathers and materials, with seat trim available in either black or saddle (a rich tan color). I especially like the speakers in the headrests. One of the best features is opening and closing the convertible top, which can be easily handled with one hand from either front seat. The Spider is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine with up to 160 horsepower, connected to either a sixspeed manual or automatic transmission. Handling is crisp, the ride a bit on the soft side for a sports car and power surprisingly excellent. The Spider is available in three trim levels: Classica, Lusso and Abarth, all priced under $30,000. There’s also a special launch edition – Prima Edizione Lusso. Priced at $35,000, this trim comes in a unique blue color and is limited to just 124 models. There is a great deal to love about this spot – the large inviting dining area, an interesting array of signature cocktails and a great wait staff – but the Chef’s Board is definitely worth the visit on its own. Meats include soppressata salami and Calabrese sausage, while havarti, herb-crusted goat cheese and gorgonzola are the featured cheeses. The herbaceous nature and creaminess of the goat cheese marries beautifully with the slight peppery heat from the soppressata. Your board will arrive with tart pickled vegetables, a rich fig jam, candied pecans and toasted bread. How you mix-and-match it all is up to you! The sleek, modern interior and chef-driven menu has those in the know flocking to try anything new and immerse themselves in the vast whiskey offerings. While the drinks here are immeasurable, you’ll want to do more than sip. Chef Nick Rusticus has created a complex combination of meats and cheeses for his Chef’s Board. The meats and cheeses vary based on availability and caliber, but the thick, crusty country bread, seasonal pickles and drunken cherry mostarda are standard. The boozy cherries and a touch of mustard give this mostarda an extra zip and truly pair well with every delicious detail of this board. Settle in with a glass of wine or one of the venue’s well-loved whiskey flights and you are in for some prime nibbling.

Both of The Herb Box’s locations have been a welcome place for omnivores and carnivores over the years. The menu is quite vegetable-forward yet the entrees feature a perfect balance of both protein and veggie options. Before diving into said entrees, order the Cheeseboard of the Moment to share. Much like with other restaurants, the kitchen switches these boards up from time to time to keep things interesting. A constant on the board is the pan-fried Crow’s Dairy goat milk cheese. The mild flavor is an ideal complement to any of the meat options and adds a nice texture contrast to the crisp crostini. The board is also dotted with olives marinated in lemon, honey, rosemary and alepo chilies.

Before you dig into those oysters on the half shell or golden scallops, consider starting with the Chef’s Choice Cheese Plate. The selection changes frequently, but you’ll always be impressed with Chef Smith’s selection of balanced and unique components. You’ll find a great blend of textures that are decadent, tangy and smoky. Pickled vegetables act as a palate cleanser and the jams add a touch of sweetness with the fresh baked ciabatta serving as the perfect accompaniment.

Nestled away in a quiet corner of Old Town Scottsdale is a beautifully repurposed vintage home that now inhabits romance, culinary artistry and an impressive menu. Begin your dinner with any one of the restaurant’s five charcuterie or cheese boards ranging from smoked burrata with leeks and black truffle vinaigrette to Finocchiona salumi with ciabatta, fermented pepper and fennel mustard. One of the more unique boards is a combination of baked St. Andre cheese, basil, peanut and kumquat. The slightly sweet and tart combination of the kumquat (similar to a cross between a lime and tangerine) and the fresh peppery tones of basil creates additional complexity to the flavor of the cheese and meats. No matter which combination you decide on, make sure you get a requisite photo-op; these boards are too beautiful not to share with the world!
