I
remember going to Arizona Diamondbacks games years ago and watching Randy Johnson step up to the pitching mound. There was something just captivating about his movements, and you knew you were watching greatness. This month, we were lucky enough to catch up with him just before he headed off to Cooperstown to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Although Randy played with other teams throughout his baseball career, it is the Diamondbacks logo that he will sport as he accepts the Hall of Fame honor. “When you are elected to the Hall of Fame,” he told us, “you are voted in because of periods of dominance. Those moments for me were here in Arizona with the Cy Young for four straight years, being recognized as the most influential pitcher, and as co-MVP for winning the World Series.” Yet, even with all of those achievements, some of the moments that have made the most impact on him have come from what he is doing now—his photography and USO tours. You can read all about those, and what he thinks about his life today, on page 42. Also, since it’s August (read: hot outside!), we have stories in this issue to help you cope with the heat. He’s the guy who now juggles the following ventures: • He is the chief executive officer of Blue Global Media, a 10-year-old Internet marketing firm with 30 employees in Scottsdale Airpark that generates $30 million a year in revenue. • He is the founder and creative director of Diego Milano (named for his young son), a luxury denim business that has attracted three major retailers. • He is the chairman of Carmen Asset Management (named for his young daughter), an investment fund that provides small business and consumer loans. Kay moved to Scottsdale from Seattle when he was a teen, attending Horizon High School and, like a lot of kids in school, found it hard to express himself in a traditional manner. “All I knew was that I wanted to do things in a different way,” he says. There weren’t a lot of outlets for him, which might have led to his gravitation towards music. He formed bands and
started playing. He still plays today. In his early 20s, he played folk music, and then rock, primarily in Tempe but also all around the state. Like most young musicians, his played mostly coffee houses and bars. Kay, who just turned 47, says playing music probably helped spark his entrepreneurial side. “I think it made me hungry, figuratively and literally. Being a musician—it’s a very hard life,” Kay says. “It takes driving all night to play some gig in Texas… You get there, you have to pour your heart out, and 10 people have their backs turned to you, drinking beer. It made me realize some things, for sure. It teaches you a lot of persistence.” During those early years he started a handful of small companies and “basically became an entrepreneur.” A supply distributorship was one of those companies. Kay recalled the days when he sold office and school supplies to businesses and schools “pretty much door to door.” “That business ultimately ended up failing. I ended up sleeping in my car for a while,” he remembers. “I was living out of my car, going to hotels around Arizona selling products. I never gave up. I said SO SCOTTSDALE! |

I’m going to figure this out.” One key lesson from his early days has stayed with him. It’s part of his vocabulary for each of his business enterprises and frames his approach to all things business: staying true to yourself. “It made me realize that, by the end, as I worked through these things, it’s okay to be yourself,” he says. That rings especially true for his denim line, Diego Milano. It’s there, he explains, where they “try to break the mold. We try to do things a different way. We said, ‘We’re going to break the rules. Let’s create something different. Why do jeans all have to be made in Los Angeles and be blue? Why can’t they be different colors? Why do they all need to be a five-pocket product?’” Three major retailers are putting in orders and getting behind the product, Kay says. “If you would’ve told me, ‘I’m psychic. You’ll be in fashion and in 10 years you’ll have a denim fashion line,’ I would have told you that you’re crazy,” Kay says. The genesis of Kay’s denim fascination was borne out of frustration with what was out there. Denim became a quite a thing for Kay. An obsession even. “I had to make jeans. I don’t know why. I wouldn’t let it go. It bothered me. … It came out of some sort of weird impulse I had where I was like I had to do something about this. I couldn’t find anything unique and interesting. I was at the point where I just had to make something because I just couldn’t find it,” he explains. The jeans fixation has paid off nicely. In his day-to-day approach, Kay says he draws inspiration from Tony Robbins. He credits the self-help guru as a big influence, who has inspired him as he is “constantly trying to learn and grow as an owner and as a person.” Among other things, Robbins has helped him frame his business approach. “We’ll fail or succeed on our own merits,” he says. “I think it’s just having that courage to believe in yourself. You’re going to fail more that way but ultimately you’ll learn more.”

ocal author Diane Lynn (Bienstock) has always been interested in writing stories and poetry, but her career as an E.R. nurse, a mom, and then as a topproducing real estate agent took her in different directions. She took the plunge in May 2015 and released her first selfpublished novel, The Second Target, and the romance mystery book was met with great reviews. In June, her novel landed on Amazon’s bestseller list in two categories, and was accepted at the Scottsdale Public Library. Lynn’s experiences as an E.R. nurse were helpful in relaying the story of heroine Beth Scott, a lawyer who is fighting for her life after an attack from an intruder, but who has no memory of the event. Lynn relied on her husband, Steven Bienstock, a Valley attorney, for insight regarding some of the legal points in the book. When weaving the story, Lynn inserted clever twists as Scott uncovers leads, which brings a tidal wave of emotions and a bigger storm of questions. What made you decide to commit to writing a novel? I have read so many bad ones that were poorly written and I wondered how these things became so big and successful. I felt I could be a good writer as well, and that’s what really inspired me. Was writing your first novel challenging? The writing just flowed. I sat down at the computer, jotted down an outline, kind of followed the outline, and then changed it, as well. I had the book written in six weeks. What’s next for you in your writing career? This book ends like a cliffhanger. I’m doing a sequel to the first novel and I’m three-quarters of the way finished. The sequel should be out by the end of the year. Writing has really become my passion now and I’m putting real estate on hold.

orn and raised in the Valley of the Sun, photographer Alicia Marie Griffeth grew into her own in The Windy City. “Chicago was a big influence on my photographic style, and then Arizona filled in the areas where I was still lacking something... you know, like a touch of warmth and sunshine!” she says. Griffeth stumbled upon photography a handful of years ago and immediately fell in love with capturing life’s most precious moments, such as weddings, families, and children. Her photographic style and fashion sense are two in the same—both combining Chicago urban with laidback Arizona sunshine. “My daily fashion look is a mix between girly and boss-lady—clean lines and urban,” she says. “I do love a sense of classic but try to incorporate something a little trendy to offset it. I love picking something out of the ordinary and telling myself to just ‘own it!’” Griffeth’s free-spirited nature and love for life is also reflected in her fashion style—you’ll find her dressed from head-totoe with clean lines and a touch of quirk... like her weakness for bows. What are your favorite stores in the Valley? Lululemon is my happy place. I love the way they involve themselves in the community (free yoga!) and I love their clothes for lounging and for yoga. ZARA and TopShop are always fun places to check out those urban, clean lines. My go-to for comfort and a classic look is Ann Taylor Loft. What is one thing in your closet you can’t live without? Nude wedges! Obsessed. They go with everything and dress it up a little. Photographing others and events is your passion. We have to ask, are you at all camera shy? My mom always told me I was a ham. I loved being in front of the camera! As I got older I definitely became more aware of the camera—you could say a little shy. I try to empathize with my clients though. It’s important for me to get in front of the camera to understand the emotions my clients go through.

In the beginning
here’s no way you could not notice Randy Johnson. At nearly seven feet tall, the former Major League Baseball star is a force to be reckoned with—on the field and off—which earned him the nickname “The Big Unit” in the initial days of his career. From his early years of playing sports and skateboarding with his friends to winning the World Series, the five-time Cy Young award-winner and 10-time MLB All-Star always pursues every endeavor with determination. Whether it is looking back over an illustrious baseball career or traveling the world looking for the next great photo op, Johnson always remembers the people who helped him get where he is today.
Johnson is the youngest of six children. His parents are typical Midwesterners—his dad was in law enforcement and his mom was a secretary in their hometown of Duluth, Minn. After the first five Johnson kids were born—three girls and two boys—the family decided to relocate to California. They made their way to Livermore in 1963, where the youngest Johnson was born just a few months after their arrival. “I had a typical childhood,” Johnson explains. “Things were a lot easier then. Everything was a lot simpler.” Growing up was typical of Johnson’s generation—surrounded by lots of friends, playing sports and skateboarding. “I played a lot of sports,” he explains.

“Baseball was just one of them. I also played football, basketball and tennis. I loved to skateboard.” Johnson says his parents were always there for him. “There was no pressure on me from my parents, but they supported me in whatever I wanted.” Johnson made the first choice in his baseball career right out of high school. He actually had several offers—from colleges who offered him full athletic scholarships and as a fourth-round draft pick for the Atlanta Braves for $50,000. Johnson turned down the Atlanta Braves and decided to accept a full scholarship to University of Southern California (USC). “The decision to go to college was a good one,” says Johnson. “As a fourth-round draft pick, I was afraid I’d get lost in the shuffle as a small fish in a big pond. I decided that going to USC gave me an opportunity to further my education, to learn more about something I loved—photography—and to learn more about baseball.” The gamble paid off. After three years in college, he was drafted as a second-round pick by the Montreal Expos for $85,000. With the Expos, he quickly became known for his fast pitches, intimidating appearance, and a ton of energy to boot.

Creating a career and a reputation Johnson might have started his career in 1988, but he’s the first to admit that it took him some time to come into his own. He spent a year with the Montreal Expos before joining the Seattle Mariners in 1989. Johnson would stay in Seattle until 1998, and began to make a name for himself there. During his time in Seattle, he received the Cy Young Award, had the first of his 300-plus strikeout seasons, and was an MLB All Star five times. Over the course of his baseball career, Johnson played 22 years in the major leagues. As is common in major league sports, the choice wasn’t always his own. He was traded from Seattle to the Houston Astros in 1998. For Arizonans, one of his most celebrated choices came at the end of that year when he became a free agent. “I had four teams I considered,” explains Johnson. “The Dodgers, the

Rangers, Anaheim, and the Arizona Diamondbacks.” Johnson was considered the most dominating player in baseball that year, so it was a bit of a risk to go with a team only in its second year as a franchise. Johnson signed a four-year contract, with an option for one more, with the new Diamondbacks and spent 1999 through 2004 here in the Valley of the Sun. His four-year contract for $52.4 million was a far cry from that first $55,000 offer out of high school.
Playing with the Arizona Diamondbacks Johnson says that his time with the Diamondbacks was the best of his career. During his time in Arizona, he was awarded the Cy Young Award four straight years. More importantly for the Diamondbacks, its fans and Johnson himself, he also helped the franchise win the 2001 World Series against the New York Yankees. “It was a fantastic element of my career,” explains Johnson. “We gelled as a team for a couple of years. Winning the World Series was the pinnacle. To beat the New York Yankees—that makes it even better,” he laughs. Johnson says that the World Series that year was remarkable for many reasons. The New York Yankees had won the series the previous three years, so they were tough opponents for anyone, and particularly for a new franchise like the Diamondbacks. But even more dramatic, the World Series was held in New York just seven weeks after the September 11 attacks. “I always tried to remember it took a lot of work,” says Johnson of his notoriety following the World Series win. “My career didn’t take off in my early 20s. I didn’t take off until late in my career. I never got caught up in the success. If you do, you lose track of where you are.” Johnson’s time with the Diamondbacks kept leading to more great moments. On May 18, 2004, Johnson pitched what was only the 17th perfect game in baseball history. On June 2, 2004, he pitched a no-hitter. Then, in 2005, he was traded to the New York Yankees. The 2005-2006 season was a tough one for Johnson, with a back injury, back surgery, and the death of his brother. “People forget we aren’t robots,”
explains Johnson. He returned to Arizona for 2007-2008, and spent his last year, 2009, playing for the San Francisco Giants. He officially retired and returned to Arizona in 2010. “You don’t play to become a superstar,” Johnson quips. “It just happened. Along with four knee surgeries, three back surgeries, and a torn rotator cuff. The success was the reward for working hard.”
Passionate about retirement Johnson returned home to Arizona and has embraced his retirement. He has a chance to pursue his love of photography that he studied in college and he spends a lot of time touring with the USO for American troops stationed abroad. “Lots of things I enjoy doing didn’t hit the headlines like baseball, but it’s sometimes more satisfying for me,” he says. Photography helps Johnson share the world he is lucky to experience with those who might not be able to see it firsthand. “I was always most at home between the lines on the mound,” Johnson says in an attempt to explain why photography is as much a passion for him today as baseball was for more than two decades. “That was my comfort zone. Photography gives me that same focus. It’s a release. I get in the zone just as I used to when pitching.” Johnson loves photographing rock concerts—often from on-stage with some of the world’s biggest bands—as well as what he calls “adrenaline rush events” such as NASCAR, BMX and surfing. He also enjoys traveling. “I take my camera and pay someone as a guide to show me the sights. The entire trip revolves around my photography. One of the best experiences was two years ago in Africa. After a visit to Botswana I went to Rwanda to see the silverback gorillas. Everything there is a National Geographic moment,” he laughs. Some of Johnson’s most moving experiences have been his seven USO tours. “It’s the most impactful thing I’ve done in my life,” he says with raw emotion. “I’m seeing someone else’s son or daughter volunteering for this. Athletes are spoiled. We make a lot of money. We live in a bubble. But when you’re seeing kids 19- to 25-years-old willing to give their lives—volunteering to give their lives—it’s very impactful.” Johnson says it has been important AUGUST 2015 |

for him to connect the dots. When he arrived in New York for the World Series in 2001, Ground Zero was still smoldering. “I was at Ground Zero,” he says quietly. “Words can’t express how important it is that these kids are doing this. It’s 13 years later and some of the military I’ve met are still in the service. Meeting these kids has been the most rewarding thing I’ve done, aside from being a father.” Johnson says he takes his role as father seriously. He has four children, two in college and two still in high school. “I do a lot of work with the minor leagues for the Diamondbacks,” explains Johnson. “I see a lot of parents trying to live vicariously through their children. They push them in a direction like baseball because there’s money to be made. But parents should realize it’s not that easy. You can do more damage than good. I want my children to do whatever they want to do with their lives and I support them in their choices.”
The Hall of Fame and beyond In the years since his retirement, Johnson has appeared in commercials for several major brands and has been in various television shows and movies. Today, he enjoys traveling and photographing moments he can share with others. He has examples of his photography online at www.rj51photos.com. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame last month, and will proudly display the Diamondbacks logo. Why Arizona instead of Seattle or one of the other teams he played for during his career? “When you are elected to the Hall of Fame,” explains Johnson, “you are voted in because of periods of dominance. Those moments for me were here in Arizona with the Cy Young for four straight years, being recognized as the most influential pitcher, and as co-MVP for winning the World Series.” Johnson is excited to see what the future will bring and knows that he can use his baseball notoriety to do good work for causes he believes in, from cystic fibrosis to helping the homeless to supporting our troops. And how does the man who has defeated every major league team at least once and has had 4,975 strikeouts—more than any other lefthanded pitcher—describe his life today? “Blessed. I am blessed.”

One couldn’t help but be drawn to its cheerful, anthropomorphic styling, rainbow palate of colors, and winsome cuteness. A year later, the Fiat family grew with the introduction of the 500L (the “L” stands for “Lounge” or “Large”), a much larger vehicle with four doors, a rear hatch, and small-on-the-outside, big-onthe-inside packaging. Now, for 2016, comes the newest of the 500 family: the X. With all-wheel-drive, it’s Fiat’s crossover, a retro-chic utility vehicle that aims to steal sales from competitors like MINI Countryman and Nissan Juke. is pure Italian: bright-eyed, and delightful with just the right amount of muscular, design-forward styling. Of course there’s the trapezoidal grille with whiskers surrounding the “FIAT” emblem and the ability to customize it with one of 12 exterior colors. The 500X comes with four full doors and is adorable inside, too, with a pair of bucket seats up front and a rear seat that need make no apologies for comfort and appearance. There’s also a commendable amount of cargo space. The interior is outfitted with traditional Cinquecento cues, such as the body-colored dash (except on Trekking models), circular gauge cluster and seven interior color options. The 500X is offered in a choice of five trim levels. The base Pop trim comes with Fiat’s 1.4-liter turbocharged 160-horsepower four-cylinder engine and either a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic transmission. All other trims— Easy, Trekking, Lounge and Trekking Plus— come with a 180-horsepower 2.4-liter fourcylinder and the nine-speed automatic. I spent a day driving the 500X with the 2.4-liter engine in both front and all-wheel-drive form up the Pacific Coast Highway through the beaches and canyons of Malibu and neighboring environs. The routes gave me the chance to experience what most buyers across the country will face, sans snowy road conditions. In city driving, the 500X was exceptionally easy to maneuver through traffic with excellent visibility. Through the canyons, the 500X’s power and handling felt crisp and especially trustworthy on sharp curves and corners. It never felt winded climbing hilly mountain roads. With the 500X’s Euro-design cachet, charisma and adorable design, fun and quick maneuverability, four doors and roomy interior, the 500X is a masterfully packaged formula for a fun car to own and drive. ore than 180 years ago, Charles Tanqueray began distilling gin in the booming Bloomsbury district of London, eventually growing in popularity so much that he opened his own hugely successful retail outlet in 1838. Upon Tanqueray’s death in 1868, his son—Charles Waugh Tanqueray—inherited the business. “Waugh was just 20-years-old when he took over the business. A visionary who saw the global potential for Tanqueray, Waugh started promoting the brand internationally,” says current Tanqueray Master Distiller Tom Nichol. “He also engineered the merger between Charles Tanqueray & Co. and Alexander Gordon & Co. in 1898, forming the largest gin house in the world.” During his time at the helm of the brand, Waugh also produced a Tanqueray family recipe book, which contained a process to create a juniper-forward gin affectionately called Bloomsbury. Now, 130 years after the recipe book was written and a century since the distillery moved its main production facility to Scotland, Nichol and Tanqueray are paying homage to Waugh by re-imagining his Bloomsbury gin and bringing it to the market for a limited time. Tanqueray Bloomsbury gin features prominent notes of Tuscan juniper and other botanicals, such as coriander, angelica and cassia bark. According to Nichol, it follows recent upscale limitededition launches from their team, including Tanqueray “Old Tom” gin in 2014, and the citrus-heavy Tanqueray “Malacca” in 2013. “I wanted to make something that was completely different from our other limited editions, and with this gin I do feel we have achieved that. It is very inspirational to work with an original Tanqueray family recipe, and for it to taste this good," says Nichol. Launched in July, only 100,000 bottles will be available nationwide. The bottle pack features a signature and a marque with the initials of Waugh on each label. In further homage, the main label reflects a portion of the original handwritten recipe.

O
ne would expect to find fine wines, spirits, international oils and vinegars in little specialty shops in places like Paris and Venice, but what you may not know is that now there is a fantastic little shop right here in Scottsdale where you can nab these amazing tastes and quality products. VOM FASS offers only the finest of oils, vinegars, fruit vinegars, wines and spirits. Co-owner Melisa Conti says, “I cannot necessarily compare our store to others in town. Our oils and vinegars come from Germany and the Mediterranean region. None of our vinegars have fillers or additives, and none of them are mass produced—they are specially handled and shipped. It’s an amazing process.” The fruit vinegars are a major specialty for VOM FASS because of how they are produced, and they are becoming more and more popular for use in mixed drinks and soda water. “We are even doing specialty events with cocktail specialists to show not only how tasty the vinegars can be in your drinks, but talk about the health benefits of these vinegars, as well. They offer excellent antioxidants, are good for regulating your sugars, and can help with fat absorption,” adds Conti. Conti began the business with her
husband Louis in late 2014 after a visit to another VOM FASS store in Sedona. Conti says the pair was just so impressed with the product that they began to research how and where it was from. They became equally impressed with the people who brought the product to the United States, and the idea of opening up their own shop here in the Valley blossomed from there. The idea really took less than a year from concept to grand opening date. “Louis was a dentist before we opened the shop, and the plan was for him to run the store himself, but it didn’t quite work out that way,” Conti says. “I now help run the store and even our kids, ages 20 and 18, are in the store a number of days to help run the business. While typically we don’t hire people that young due to the issue of serving alcohol, we do have our kids helping with the business, making it a family affair.” VOM FASS, which is located at the Scottsdale Waterfront (7135 E. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter.
