Understanding Hair Extensions

Without hair extensions, they would never be able to achieve the look they’ve always dreamed about having. they love being able to help someone reflect their inner beauty. Are hair extensions high maintenance? Once hair extensions are applied, your only responsibility is to brush your hair daily. Home care requires nothing special; extensions can actually be more low maintenance than most people think. Use of your everyday products, blow-driers and irons are perfectly fine. Three to six months is the average amount of time to wear these extensions before reapplying them, due to hair growth. Do hair extensions break your hair? Hair extensions can be great for your hair. With proper application and removal, clients find that their hair is actually growing, rather than breaking. Breakage comes either from the type of bond used or the individual who is applying them. A stylist’s patience is paramount when applying and removing extensions. That’s the potential for most breakage. The bond must be 100 percent keratin, a natural protein from which human hair is made of. Very few companies actually use keratin; many use glue or tape, which suffocates and breaks the hair. Do hair extensions look fake? Many stylists use synthetic hair, bulky wefts or strips, which look overly shiny and stiff like a wig. We use only 100% human hair, the best quality and takes longer to get, but lasts up to four years. All strands are small, individual pieces so they move freely, like your own hair. With the application technique they use, the extensions are extremely discrete. Blending is critical and strand placement is an artistic process that requires special training. Jo Paris stylists have received additional training to develop the cutting and blending techniques needed to achieve this natural overall look. I
recently came back from a cruise (my first) to the Caribbean, and as much as I enjoyed the trip, it’s always nice to come home. Especially when home is, well, here. And it got me thinking … we often travel somewhere new and exotic for an escape, but for those of us who live in Scottsdale, an escape can be as effortless as walking out the door and taking your pick of all there is to do. Case in point, have you seen all the new resort renovations popping up around town? We have and we approve! Check out page 72. We also got to know eight Valley bartenders who are making the world more delicious one craft cocktail at a time, and a whole lot more interesting too, based on their tales from behind the bar (page 81). One of my favorite reads in this issue tells the story of our cover superstars: Jan and Garth Williams (page 46). This husband-and-wife team serve the local community as casting directors and acting coaches extraordinaire. They’re upping the acting game in the area, turning Hollywood’s eyes on the Valley, while training people to break out of their comfort zones and become who they really are – all through their shared passion for the theater. In fact, this issue seemed to take a turn for the creatively inclined. Our fashion feature blends style with architecture (page 100). Local artist Niki Woehler talks of her painting techniques that capture the rugged beauty of nature (page 74). And Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market cofounders Lindsay Holt and Coley Arnold share how they turned hunting for treasures into a thriving business (page 31). As I write this, I’m prepping for two more trips, after which I’m sure I’ll be ready for a close-to-home escape. up close The Scottsdale market is the largest vintage and antique market in the West and it continues to grow leaps and bounds each year. Last year, it attracted more than 35,000 shoppers and that number is expected to grow in 2016. The market first began in 2011 as what both women refer to as a happy accident. In July 2011, the Holts and Arnolds took a trip to Banff in Alberta, Canada, where they began discussing their frustration over a lack of places to shop for vintage items in the Phoenix area and joked about starting their own event so they could shop themselves. But, their husbands immediately saw a good business idea and encouraged their wives to pursue it. “Our first market was in our friend’s backyard in September 2011,” Holt says. “We simply pulled together a Facebook page, put an add on Craigslist and crossed our fingers.” The duo’s first market had 23 vendors and they anticipated maybe 200 vintage and antique fans to show up, but more than 600 people came through the doors in about four hours, and the rest, as they say, is history. “We knew then that something special had started,” Holt says. Today, the markets are filled with about 200 vendors from around the country who sell handmade and vintage goods. “Our goal is to inspire vintage in the daily lives of our shoppers and our vendors,” Holt says. “We want people to recycle and reuse items in their daily lives, and we try to encourage them to include those items throughout their homes.” The pair plans to hold four markets in 2016, including their first out-of-state market in San Diego July 16-17. The markets are full of high-quality items, all of which are vintage, antique and handmade. Arnold notes the market experience isn’t just about shopping for trinkets. “The market isn’t just tables of ‘junk.’ People come in looking to spend and shop for items they sometimes struggle to find anywhere else.”

stay busy. But, you could say both were born with “junkin” in their blood. Raised in Spokane, Washington, Holt fondly remembers going to junk, estate and yard sales with her parents and siblings. “To this day, my parents’ house is filled with antiques and all sorts of treasures that remind me of my youth,” Holt says. “I’ve been finding the beauty in other people’s ‘junk’ my whole life. Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market is simply a product of my own love of junk.” As an Arizona native, Arnold doesn’t see junking as a job – it’s her passion. “I started treasure hunting at a young age, going to garage sales every weekend with my family,” Arnold says. “I love transforming what others see as trash into something beautiful!” As for their friendship and business

partnership? You could say that was fated. Arnold and Holt first met at a church class for young married couples. Arnold had recently given birth to her first child and Holt was pregnant with her first. They first bonded over becoming new moms, but their friendship grew as they realized their shared passion for unique finds.
Looking Ahead The upcoming out-of-state market is just the first step in their growth. “We get daily requests to come to other cities,” Holt says. “Many of our shoppers and vendors come from other states, and we do have expansion plans on the horizon. It isn’t a matter of if, just a matter of when.” The women add that the vendors they work with depend on these markets for a huge part of their financial draw each year, and the pair are more than happy to support the creative community in any way that they can. And a sense of community is a big factor in the women’s success. Both Holt and Arnold acknowledge that they wouldn’t be where they are without their husbands. “They are who encouraged us to start our first market, and they have stood by us throughout the entire process,” Holt says. “Our husbands, parents, family and kids come out and help us set up the markets, are there to help throughout the entire weekend and help us tear down at the end. We simply couldn’t do this alone.” Both Holt and Arnold continue to stride strong with the business, helping to keep the creative community flourishing while staying rooted to their passion for finding beauty in the unexpected. “I love design and using vintage pieces to bring warmth and tell a story in someone’s home,” Arnold says. “Finding the perfect piece is a true treasure hunt for me. he zealous team of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale works hard to ensure that it delivers an experience that will have a lifelong impact on its children. Fountain Hills resident Tina Duffy holds many roles within the organization. As vice chairperson of the Programs Committee, chairperson for the Angels Campaign and a community volunteer, Duffy has left her imprint on the organization for nearly seven years now. In turn, she has also left an imprint on the hearts of many children. Prior to volunteering with the Boys & Girls Clubs, Duffy worked in health and wellness for 18 years as the owner and fitness trainer of Springer Fitness. She later began to mentor children, and by incorporating her health knowledge, Duffy got children involved in fitness activities. “It means so much to be able to help someone who deserves all the opportunities the world has to offer but may not have the facilities in order to do so.” Duffy helps children attain those opportunities through her charitable work as a board member, and her hopes for the club’s children is that they will always have the opportunity to reach their goals. “I love seeing these children feel that they have a place to call their second home.”

What do you love most about being a part of The Boys & Girls Clubs? I love that the organization does not turn any child away. If a child can’t afford to attend, he/she will be accepted on scholarship. I love the passion and love that the staff has for the children and that the children have for the staff. Yes, that is what my family and friends tell me. I have always loved to help people who work hard and have great attitudes. What are some of your other passions? hen you walk through the office doors of Euro Pacific Capital, you’ll meet one of the branch’s best-dressed: Marlaina De Alva. De Alva joined the Euro Pacific team in October 2010, and she is on her 18th year as a stockbroker. Her responsibilities include everything from overseeing all aspects of compliance and approving new accounts to covering any broker who may be out of the office. “I like to say that my role comprises everything from the very mundane to the extremely complicated!” she says. As the only female in the office, De Alva coins herself as the Mama Grizzly. “I am very protective of them!” And while this Mama Grizzly is strong and protective, she also epitomizes femininity with her wardrobe. De Alva’s typical workday look is a knit top paired with a flowy skirt. “I prefer skirts to pants. They are much more comfortable and cooler here in Arizona.” De Alva’s style is reflective of her personality, too, so much so that her friends often point out various garments and say to her, “That’s so you.” Being able to express oneself is why De Alva adores fashion. “It’s an aspect of one’s personality,” she says. “And I love when someone can select something that’s so ‘me.’” How would you classify your personal style? I definitely have a distinctive style. I don’t like any outfit to be too “matchymatchy.” I always mix it up and like to wear a little pop of color, whether it’s bright shoes with an otherwise conservative outfit, or maybe a blingy accessory. The husband-and-wife team, who have both lived and worked in big acting areas such as Los Angeles and Chicago, are now residents of Paradise Valley and are proud to call Arizona home. When it comes to acting talent, the two are focused on making Arizona a key part of the discussion through Garth Williams Casting & Development, for which they are both casting directors and coaches, as well as Almost Famous Theatre Company, where Jan is the artistic director and Garth is the producing director. “We are hoping that the pendulum swings in the right way for the state, that more jobs are brought to the state for actors,” Garth says. “If we can live in paradise and work here, it is the best of both worlds.” You might wonder what spurred them to open an acting studio seeking to help those who have an interest in the field of acting, and you could trace that back to their early acting days. Together, the duo has more than 40 years of combined experience in various aspects of the entertainment industry, giving them the opportunity to provide a blended brand of coaching to their students. In addition to being a casting director, Garth has a background in theater and TV acting. He spent time in the theater and during his time in LA, he spent about seven years acting on the NBC daytime drama “Santa Barbara.” “I played a recurring character, brought in when the storyline dictated,” Garth says. “I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.” He reflects that his time on the show was something that he will never forget. “I loved being on that show. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had, and my hope now is to share that love and hope with others.” Jan attended Chaparral High School and then Arizona State University, where she studied theater. While living in the Valley, she was chosen to be Jaclyn Smith’s double in a movie and recalls that during her time on the movie set, she learned quite a bit more than anticipated. “During the two months on the set, I learned more than I ever did in a classroom setting,” Jan says. “I learned about movie technology, lighting and camera angles, all in a compressed amount of time. So it was a very unique learning
experience but also very helpful.” Jan was also fortunate enough to connect with a mentor and talent manager, Joan Sittenfield, who has cast and packaged shows such as “Law and Order” and “Taxi.” Jan then moved to LA to study acting with Sittenfield, learning her strong ethics and methods along the way. She’s been an on-camera spokesperson for a number of companies, including McDonald’s and General Motors. Her off-camera experience includes serving as the Entertainment Programming Manager for Disney Entertainment, where she cast performers for live shows. Both Garth and Jan worked for SO SCOTTSDALE! |

several years doing their respective jobs and are sure they must have crossed paths somewhere along the way. However, it wasn’t until they both acted in the play “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” that they finally met face-to-face and hit it off. “We met doing theater later in life, but we are sure it was meant to be,” Jan says. “Once we got together, we started thinking about what we could do to create art for others in the community. We really wanted to make this little black box theater and so we started small, deciding to do casting and give back to the actors and want-to-be actors to help the acting community thrive and be sustainable.”

Leading the Pack Today, six years later, Jan and Garth are doing some pretty amazing things for the Valley’s local talent. “When we started, most of the work for actors was still going to people in LA. Even projects in Arizona were going to LA actors or they would double cast them,” Garth says. “We knew we needed to raise the bar and compete at a national level, and we realized that if you get the actors ready, you will attract the jobs, which is exactly what we are doing with our group.” Garth Williams Casting & Development, which began in 2010, started with one core class open to about
10 actors. Garth says about 20 people showed up and things have only grown from that point. In 2012, they added Almost Famous Theatre Company to their repertoire and have since produced 11 theatrical productions starring students from their core classes. “We attract great people, mostly word-of-mouth referrals for coaching, and we are excited that we attract the people who are ready to change their lives for the better,” Garth says. The students who come through their programs aren’t just people hoping to grace the silver screen, though; a spectrum of students walk through their doors. “We have APRIL 2016 |

a wide variety of people wanting to take our classes, including models, real estate agents, teachers who want to communicate better with their students, and basically anyone who wants to be a good storyteller.” Something unique about Jan and Garth’s methodology is that it isn’t just about training actors; it’s about teaching someone to be more than they are and unleashing the people they are at their core. “We want people to be better spouses, to be better parents, to be in the moment, to be better communicators,” Jan says. “We get these people back to who they truly are after we peel away the layers of being a grown-up. With our improv and acting classes, the filters are off and people come to us and tell us they’ve changed for the better after our classes and coaching.” But, of course, for those who are really working toward building their resume for future acting roles, the classes are a great outlet as well. Those who wish to showcase their new talents get to perform productions in front of audiences, showing off all the things they have worked on, whether it be for three weeks or three months. Many of Jan and Garth’s students have gone on to perform on TV commercials, TV movies and other major acting roles. Currently, there are about 30 to 40 students who rotate through the classes and they are continuing to grow. “We make people work outside of their comfort zone and push them to levels they felt at one point they were not capable of doing, but it pays off in the end and they are grateful for it,” Garth says. When the group is together, perhaps at a post-show party, and they look up at the TV to see a commercial playing, Garth says it isn’t surprising to see one of their own students up there on the screen. “More often than not, it is one our own up there doing the commercial, and we look at each other and realize that we are doing exactly what we are supposed to be doing – and it feels pretty darn good.” The Almost Famous Theatre Company will have their next performance, “[title of show],” April 15-17 at the Hormel Black Box Theatre at Phoenix Theatre. hoenix is quickly becoming a mecca for recording artists and for Valley woman Nisha Kataria, that is music to her ears. The local singing sensation is no stranger to the music world but is now taking things out on her own for the first time, giving it a go without the support of a major label. One can’t take a look at where Kataria is going without taking a look at her past.

“I am a big believer in destiny, things don’t just happen, they happen for a reason,” Kataria says. When Kataria was a young girl growing up here in the Valley, she attended the Arizona State Fair with her family – little did she know that fun visit would end up changing her entire life. Walking to the car with her parents and siblings, her father enticed her to sing a song and after much prompting, Kataria finally gave in. A gentleman also in the parking lot heard her singing and came up to the family to ask who had been signing. Kataria’s father, always proud of his girl, quickly pointed her out and even shared a demo tape with him (which they always carried in the car with them). As it turns out, that man was a good friend of Michael Jackson’s manager and things snowballed from there. “We got a call a day and a half later and I guess that his manager, Dexter, played Michael the demo and he really liked it and wanted to meet me,” Kataria says. “We ended up driving to Neverland the very next day and it just escalated from there and I remember everything and it was just so surreal.” Kataria says that her first visit to Neverland was better than Disneyland – it was like living in a fairytale. She and her mother were brought into a library to meet Jackson and when he came into the room to meet her for the first time, he refused to give her a handshake, rather, he gave her a big hug saying that they hug in that family. He asked her to sing for him and she says that he told her she has the voice of an angel. After that meeting, life quickly changed for Kataria. She and her mother were asked by Jackson to move into Neverland and she began working to record and then tour in Europe. Then, life quickly changed again. Kataria was set to be on tour with the King of Pop when he suddenly died in 2009. Jackson’s death forced Kataria to take a look at life back in the U.S. without Jackson helping pave the way. Like many aspiring recording artists out there today, Kataria thought the next best course of action might be to try her hand at some of the big reality TV talent shows.
“At one point in my life, I had the way of thinking that I needed the big record deal to make it, I needed shows like ‘[The] X Factor’ and ‘American Idol,’ and, at the time, I had this story – the Michael Jackson connection, so I thought it was the perfect time to go out and see if the iron was still hot,” Kataria says. Her talent, fan support and story did take her through several rounds of both shows, but, for Kataria, she believes this really wasn’t the way things were meant to be. “Everyone knew I was Michael’s protégé and with these shows, I think they all have some sort of agenda, so if you go in there not fully understanding that and knowing from the beginning exactly what is going on, it is a bad experience,” Kataria says. It wasn’t all for nothing, she says though. Kataria says she did learn some valuable lessons through the process. “The moral here for me and one that I want to share with others, is that for every boy and girl who wants to become a singer, you don’t need the big record label, you don’t need someone else to tell you that you are allowed to do it or not allowed to do it, you can make that decision on your own,” she says. Since the shows ended, Kataria has taken a new look at life both personally and musically. She is focused on what she can accomplish on her own and how she can take control. “My goals are to just keep control of everything that I put out,” she explains. “With a label, you lose control of your creative style and I wanted my music to be about me. Now that it is in my own hands, I get to put out my own kind of songs, I am the vision behind my music and I can cater more to what my fans are looking for.” As for her music, Kataria is moving ahead full steam. The singer, who focuses on a style which is very much Bollywood meets Hollywood, there is no resting now. “I just released my second single and am doing it all on the local scene now. It is very exciting and I can’t wait to see how it is received by the fans,” she says.

While the natural star knows she did things in a backwards sort of way, starting with Michael Jackson and the record label at a young age, and now working on her own without a label, she says she is very excited to see what the future holds. “I’m digging the music scene here, It’s opening my horizons and I’m discovering there is a market here for people who enjoy local music and it is a very exciting time,” she explains. While, musically, Kataria is putting her own music out without a label, she is by no means alone. She is doing all of this with the huge support of her family and friends. Kataria is still living with family in Phoenix, giving her a support system all the time: to lean on in tough times and to celebrate the good times as well. Quite simply, Kataria says she would be no where without them. “I would be nothing and have nothing without the support of my mom and dad,” she says. “They have been super supportive and none of this, my past and today, would have been possible without my parents pushing me and standing by me through it all. They have kept me going.” And, much like the energizer bunny, she plans to keep going and going, with no end in sight. For Kataria, this is her life and she is going to live it to the fullest. “My most recent way of thinking is that life is a gift and when one thing doesn’t work out, there is always something else out there for you,” she explains. “Life is short, so spend it with good people, doing things that you love. It is no longer about dreaming the impossible dream, it is about living that dream with the gifts that are around you.” Kataria is certainly focused on moving forward and living life to the fullest. She recently released her music video for her second single, “Riot” and is working on her next big hit, “Love’s Crazy,” which is scheduled to be released sometime later this year. The Southwest’s largest rugby event returns to Scottsdale
O
ne of the United States’ largest rugby events takes place right here in Scottsdale, and this year’s event is one of many firsts. The previously named Rugby Bowl, now renamed as The Fiesta Bowl Rugby & Balloon Classic, is the first time ASU will play a country (Mexico), the first time The Fiesta Bowl is sponsoring, and the first time the event will include an evening glow with giant, eight-story tall hot air balloons. Presented by Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale, the match will take place April 23. Starting at 5 p.m., fans can get up close and personal with the top-flight rugby competition as the ASU Men’s Rugby Team goes head-to-head with the Mexican National Rugby Union Team. And, on the heels of the year of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” world-famous Yoda and Darth Vader hot air balloons will make their Arizona debut. and updated resort lobby. Six casitas that were part of the original architecture have also been renovated. oronto native Niki Woehler has a knack for creating abstract art using distressed natural elements as her muse. While she is creative-minded and has been painting for more than 20 years, Woehler is relatively new to the art scene in the Valley as she started showing and selling her art just in the past two years. Prior to pursuing art, she was an advertising executive. Upon meeting her, it’s clear that Woehler is on her ideal path; she has the presence of a woman who is loving what she does, and her joy for her work exudes in her every movement. Though, one might say Woehler’s journey to becoming an artist was almost by happenstance.

“I wanted original art in my house, so I painted it,” Woehler says. “It was such a personal thing, and I kept it as a private part of myself, never dreaming that I could sell it. Then, a former client wanted to see my work and loved it, and she requested three pieces for her home. That’s when it occurred to me that maybe I could do this all the time.” As the mother of three children, Woehler says that she often paints to clear her mind in addition to feeding her creativity, noting that her skills come from an emotional and spiritual place rather than formal artistic training. Her paintings are inspired by the elements – water, wind, earth and fire – and objects ravaged by these. Think of eroded rocks, rusted metals or a scene obscured by rainfall. The imperfect details lend themselves to a story, a story that Woehler seeks to tell through her paintings. Highly textured, Woehler’s works are comprised of materials such as acrylics, metal, graphite, amethyst, quartz and pyrite. To get the textured effect, she rarely uses brushes, opting instead for a variety of untraditional tools like trowels and rakes to evoke imagery of nature. Vibrant and vivid in color, her paintings are so tactile that the senses are drawn in, and you can almost sense her artistic process. The paintings are often large, too; some tower at six feet tall. And for Woehler, the bigger the paintings are, the better. “My preference is large because of the size of the tools I use,” she says. “I love to make giant, sweeping gestures, and I love scale.” When she is commissioned for a piece for someone’s home, Woehler says it is her greatest joy to produce something they will love. To create an even greater artistic experience for clients, she even sends them the playlist of music she listened to while painting. Salty Sow serves contemporary farmhouse fare with a heart for what’s local and seasonal. Executive Chef Brady Cohen tells us about his journey to chefdom and the offerings at this American gastropub. WHY DID YOU BECOME A CHEF? When I was 14, my mom opened a coffee shop in my hometown of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where I got exposed to the restaurant industry. When I left for college, my roommates and I found ourselves with big appetites but no working oven or stove. So we improvised and came up with some pretty outrageous food. Though I was studying business, I got so into cooking that I transferred my scholarship funds to enroll in the Scottsdale Culinary Institute. TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING AN EXECUTIVE CHEF. While at the Scottsdale Culinary Institute, I completed an externship at Epcot Center at Disney World. Once I came back, I connected with Fox Restaurant Concepts and worked for them in virtually every culinary position you could imagine. Eventually, however, I knew I wanted to train in fine dining in a culinary mecca. Thanks to help from my brother, I actually ended up in London on a work visa, working for Galvin at Windows, a Michelin star restaurant on the 30th floor of the Hilton Park Lane. HOW DID YOU END UP BACK IN AMERICA – AND AT SALTY SOW? For all reasons people do things: a girl, of course! I also missed home and was ready for a new challenge. When I saw Salty Sow would be opening, I met with the ownership team and everything clicked. We share very similar values – we respect the farmers and growers who provide our ingredients, the members of our team, and supporting local whenever possible. hough less than two years old, Spiga Cucina Italiana has quickly become a go-to wine bar and lounge in North Scottsdale. One major reason? The spectacular happy hour cocktail list. “Because our aim is to showcase the best food and drink from Italy, Portugal and Spain, people often assume we are all about the wine,” says Beverage Manager Brandon Thompson. “And while it is true that we have an eye-popping 2,350-bottle wine collection with some of the rarest vintages from across the Mediterranean, we’ve taken great care to craft a cocktail menu to similarly impress our guests.” Among the most impressive to the palate: the Santo Frizzante, literally translated as “holy fizzy.” And fizzy it is! “With the Santo Frizzante, we aimed to create something a little bubbly, a little bold and very refreshing,” Thompson says. Thompson’s recipe begins with a vodka base. He then adds both grapefruit juice and elderflower liqueur, and then tops it with a heavy pour of prosecco. Served in a martini glass, it looks as sleek and seductive as it tastes. “Upon first tasting the cocktail, guests always note the bubbles from the prosecco, which tickle the taste buds,” Thompson says. “But then the flavors of both the elderflower – which has subtle notes of pear and passionfruit – and the grapefruit take over, resulting in a perfectly balanced sip. It’s a well-known sentiment that bartending lends itself to overhearing interesting (to say the least!) conversations over cocktails. Bartenders play many roles – as artists of their craft, they also serve others, listen to customers’ needs and do so with eager eyes upon them. You could even go so far as to say bartenders are the generous friend or sounding board someone needs. We talked with bartenders at eight locally loved bars who see their fair share of notable people and have no shortage of intriguing stories to share. But no matter the person or the tale, the commonality is that these bartenders always keep their cool with the utmost dedication to their craft, chalking up each day or night behind the bar as an opportunity for creativity and community, and perhaps a few laughs too.

Steen Olson
A
Z88’s Steen Olson has been at the helm of the restaurant’s bar for 13 years, as both a bartender and manager, and he’s been in the industry for more than double that. His first bartending job began at now-closed Greasewood Flat 27 years ago and he says he’s never looked back. A Valley native, Olson says he feels very rewarded to be at a place like AZ88 that has lasted for so many years (since 1988, in fact), giving a nod to owner Karl Kopp for always encouraging his team’s success. “I am the most fortuitous bartender in town to be able to master my craft with a great staff and the best bar-backs in
Scottsdale,” he says. Olson promises he makes a mean sidecar, perfect for Arizona’s spring weather, but he shares that his favorite cocktail to make is an Old Fashioned. This cocktail is comprised of Makers Mark, Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur and Peychaud’s Bitters, all aged in American oak for 21 days. Olson then pours the concoction over ice, muddled with cherries and fresh sliced orange, and adds a personal twist – he tops it with ginger beer instead of soda. We also got the low down on one of Olson’s most memorable stories about a guest. “Slash [the lead guitarist] from Guns N’ Roses came in with his wife or girlfriend at the time. I will never forget what he ordered: an ice cream sundae and a Kettle One martini straight up with olives. He then proceeded to draw cartoons on the beverage naps. ld Town Scottsdale’s Citizen Public House has a bartender who is Citizen born and bred. Eric Wilson got his bartending beginnings at Citizen four years ago and has been there ever since, acknowledging that he learned from some of the best and most experienced bartenders in town. He fondly says that his job now is the best job he’s ever had. Wilson, who personally enjoys a mean Sazerac (whiskey with a hint of absinthe and bitters), says his favorite drink to make actually gives a nod to his father. In honor of his dad’s 57th birthday, Wilson came up with The 57, a blend of Jameson, sweet vermouth, Amaro Meletti, Canton ginger liqueur, Nux Alpina walnut
liqueur, housemade tobacco and leather bitters, and toasted orange peel. Insider tip: You don’t need to be turning 57 to enjoy this bad boy! Personal touches like these are exactly what Wilson says the restaurant encourages its employees to bring to their guest interactions. They’re encouraged to work openly within their environments and really make it their own, and Wilson notes that every day is a new day to find a renewed approach to their guests, and even better, to their repeat guests. T
he Duce is a fun downtown hangout where anyone is welcome to grab a drink, play some cornhole or hit the dance floor. This eclectic spot has something for everyone, which is why Arizona native Patrick Kenger joined the bartending team at The Duce just under four years ago. The bar manager started in the industry as a student at Arizona State University – first bussing tables, then working as a barback, which turned into promotional work for nightclubs and finally led to bartending. “During that time I developed a true passion for the craft and even after graduating I knew I wanted to be a part of the service industry for a long time,” he says. Kenger enjoys the technical skills
involved in making a cocktail (especially one he can shake the hell out of), but he also says he loves the role he can play in someone’s night in-between ordering drinks. The Duce has been hosting the Phoenix Suns’ Christmas party for the past few years, where the players and their families come in for a good time – which you can imagine produce a few juicy stories. Being a big Suns fan, Kenger tries to work all of the parties and at one of them a few years back, noticed a kid sitting down at the end of the bar hunched over. “I thought he was one of the player’s kids, but I didn’t pay much attention,” he explains. “I finally got over to him and quickly asked if he wanted a soda or SO SCOTTSDALE! |

something. He stands up and I realized I was staring up at seven-foot Alex Len. It was an embarrassing moment as a bartender and a Suns fan. He ordered a root beer.” Aside from celebrity sightings, Kenger says that some of the funniest memories he has of bar-goers include people trying to pay with Fry’s VIP cards, proposals in the middle of the bar and intoxicated people making their own bathrooms. A
fter a fluke incident landed Gail Lynch (hostess at the time) behind the bar, she never looked back. Now, more than 30 years later, Lynch is still mixing up drinks for guests and putting smiles on their faces. Lynch joined the Durant’s team almost 11 years ago. It’s a no-brainer that someone with so much experience would wind up at one of the oldest (and most iconic) classic steakhouses in Phoenix, with more than 65 years in the Valley under its belt. “I love being part of an old school restaurant that holds its place in the history of Phoenix, and a place with an awesome product that I am proud to be part
of,” she explains. Sizzling steaks, big red booths, shaken cocktails and a bar that has been visited by some of the most famous celebrities in the world is just part of Lynch’s everyday gig. “Durant’s has hosted many cool people from Muhammad Ali giving the ole one-two punch to the men working in the kitchen to Don King greeting everyone as he passed in his colorful coat and crazy hair to the graciousness of Ernest Borgnine and Henry Winkler,” she admits. ddie Garcia traded biology for bartending, but it’s safe to say that he found his calling. The bar manager and mixologist for jade bar at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa has been behind the bar for 25 years, and at this location for about three of them. Although he started his career wanting to be a high school biology teacher and basketball coach, his path changed when he was working at a Biltmore-area restaurant called Nola’s while studying to get his degree. Jeff Myers, the general manager at the time who would later open Alice Cooper’stown, took a chance on Garcia and put the bartending rookie on the schedule to try out the craft – and
it took off from there. But, don’t think he had to give up his dream of teaching completely. “Here at jade bar, we have a Mixology 101 class on Saturdays that has been going on for years and allows me to combine my love of teaching with my fascination for cocktails,” Garcia says. “Each class offers information on a different spirit, and we teach participants how to make classic and new cocktails using those spirits.” Recently, jade bar inducted its first members into the jade bar Hall of Fame (which highlights former and current mixology superstars): Jason Asher, Kyle Mason, Micah Olson, Tyson Beuhler and Jillian Vose. ith about 20 years of bartending experience under her belt, you can say that Shannon Krol is an expert at her craft. Krol, general manager and head bartender at The Little Woody, joined the bartending world before industry jobs were a booming business and considered a career move. “Back then bartending wasn’t considered a ‘real job’ so I took a lot of confidence jabs and was always trying to figure out what I was going to do with my life. After about 15 years of trying to figure it out, I realized I had been doing it all along,” she says. If you ask Krol’s friends, they would likely say that her drink of choice is Montenegro Amaro Liquer, but she
considers whiskey neat her go-to spirit. She also enjoys a good gin, tequila, rum, mezcal or scotch. Just like her taste in alcohol, she also enjoys making just about any drink – except lemon drops – and suggests a glass of Tequila Fortaleza Reposado neat to go with the weather these days. Being at The Little Woody for four years has given Krol the opportunity to see all of the regulars who come through the bar, a lot of which are musicians. ith 44 years in the bartending business and 19 of those years spent at Phoenix City Grille (PCG), it’s clear that Frank Vitale has just as much of a history to him as the Grille does. Vitale, who started as a bar-back when he was just 17 years old, has spent most of his career with PCG owner Sheldon Knapp, splitting the past 30 years between the Grille and Knapp’s other restaurant at the time, McKenna’s. Apart from seeing NBA legend and former Phoenix Suns player Connie “The Hawk” Hawkins at PCG, Vitale has had his fair share of celebrity run-ins along the way, including James Mitchum, Frank Sinatra, Hope Lange, Evel Knievel,
Oliver Reed, Kurt Russell, Fred Astaire, Raymond Burr, Elton John, Chris Evert, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Johnny Depp – just to name a few. on Crone is the man to see at Proof, the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale’s relaxed, yet refined, eatery. Crone has been with Proof for 3 ½ years and has been bartending for a total of seven years. After working as a server, he made the switch to the beverage side where he says the act of bartending is an absolute art; he’s not only crafting cocktails but he’s doing so with an audience. Crone has had the opportunity to meet well-traveled people who each have a different story to tell, and, often, he uses those stories as inspiration to create a cocktail that brings them back to a certain moment in time. Crone says he’s had many moments where a celebrity was
at the bar, but received the same treatment as the guest next to them because he truly believes that everyone who sits at his bar should feel like a celebrity. But, being a football fan, one of his coolest guests has been Super Bowl XXXV winning quarterback Trent Dilfer. Another favorite: Eugene Levy, the actor who played the dad in the “American Pie” films. ange Rovers are sold around the world, and nearly half of them are equipped with diesel engines. In the Queen’s motherland, that number soars to a whopping 90 percent. Now, for the first time, Land Rover is introducing diesel powertrains to the United States market. Both the 2016 Land Rover Range Rover and Range Rover Sport can now be purchased with a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine with 254 horsepower and, more importantly, a massive 440 foot-pounds of torque, connected to a quick-shifting eightspeed automatic transmission. 32 percent fuel efficiency over the V-6 gasoline engine with a combined 25 mpg. The Range Rover model is known as the HSE Td6; I’ve driven it and I can tell you it’s nothing short of spectacular. I’m talking about the diesel engine performance here, but the same can be said of the Range Rover itself, which is as close to a perfect vehicle as one can get. Recently, Land Rover execs and engineers introduced the diesel-powered Range Rover for media to drive both on and offroad in Sedona. They acknowledged that the timing of their diesel introduction was less than desirable, given the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal, cheap gasoline and that buyers seldom use the vehicle to tow a boat or trailer, where having massive amounts of torque from a diesel engine is automotive nirvana. About 15 to 20 percent of buyers are expected to choose the optional diesel engine. But Land Rover execs know their buyers couldn’t care less about towing capacity, improved fuel economy, reliability ratings or that they’ll shell out an additional $1,500 to get the diesel. All of these factors don’t matter to the kind of person who gets on a waiting list to pay around $100,000 for the supposed specialness of owning and driving a Range Rover. Case in point: Have you ever sat in a Range Rover and inhaled the intoxicating fumes of its top-grain semi-aniline perforated leather seats? Have you caressed the real Macassar wood veneer, or listened to symphony hall-like sounding instruments on the Meridian Audio system? Or, have you enjoyed the high-tech electronics, amenities and world-class off-road creds? It is for these reasons that you’ll opt to include the whisper quiet diesel – because it’s about the empowerment that comes with the seduction of owning and driving the finest of British luxury. here is quite a lot of buzz about socalled superfoods, which claim to flood your body with nutrients and improve your overall health. One of those superfoods is the acai berry, which grows on certain palm trees in Central and South America. The berries are believed to provide a burst of energy and have long been a popular addition to smoothies and juices. The acai berry’s flavor is almost like a fruity red wine with chocolate overtones, and much like some wines, it is believed that those tiny berries contain powerful antioxidants, perhaps double that of blueberries and 10 times what is found in grapes. So, if you’re in the market to amp up your nutrition, seek out these acai bowls at local eateries when you’re in need of an extra boost, or, perhaps, a froyo-like indulgence with a health kick.

ho says you can’t go home again? “Certainly not me,” says Chris Mercato, director of operations at Drexyl Modern American, The Shops at Gainey Village’s newest eatery. A native of Arizona, Mercato grew up in Scottsdale and met Kelly Cordova when he took a job at the now-legendary
Marco Polo in Scottsdale. Years later, after spending time working with a laundry list of local restaurants including North, Maloney’s, Jilly’s and Barcelona – and working every restaurant job save for doing the actual cooking – Mercato was introduced to local brothers Mark, Craig and Trevor McDowell, and their long-time friend Chad Ahrendt. The six men quickly began developing the Drexyl concept. “It was always my dream to develop a restaurant with upscale food and vintage cocktails, but with more of a neighborhood vibe, where folks fresh off the golf course feel just as comfortable coming in as those dressed up for date night,” Mercato says. “When space became available at Gainey Village, we – and our other amazing partners – all agreed it was time.” SO SCOTTSDALE! |

But what would a great space and concept be without equally great food and creative cocktails? Enter Chef Robert Eckhardt, whose local culinary star has been on the rise after notable stints at LON’S at the Hermosa Inn, Tonto Verde and Desert Mountain Country Club. A graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in New York, Eckhardt spent many years training under the likes of chefs Michael Mina and Roy Yamaguchi before making his way to the Valley in 2012, but he credits two Italian women for igniting his passion for food. “I grew up in Northern California in the small city of Castro Valley, where my early culinary influences were my greatgrandmother and grandmother,” Eckhardt says. “They didn’t speak much English but managed to teach me how to cook through doing, rather than listening to specific instructions over and over.” As a result, when it comes to his food, Eckhardt keeps it simple. “It’s about enhancing the natural flavor of ingredients, not masking them with overly complex recipes and heavy sauces,” Eckhardt says. Take your pick from a couple standout menu items: the Fried Ravioli, with housemade pasta, gorgonzola, beef tenderloin, yellow tomato puree and pea shoots ($12), or the Heritage Pork Chop, a house-smoked and double-cut chop with grilled apple butter, truffle goat cheese orecchiette pasta, candied bacon and seared Brussels sprouts ($23). Like the food, the cocktail menu is similarly simple and approachable, yet playful. Developed with direction from Alliance Beverage, Drexyl currently features 10 highlighted specialty cocktails for $10 each, as well as an extensive wine and beer menu. Try an interesting take on sangria with the Crown Apple Sangria, of Crown Royal Apple, sauvignon blanc, Stirrings Ginger Liqueur and cranberry juice. Though only open since mid-February, Drexyl’s success has been so fast during dinner service, they launched lunch service in March. Drexyl is located at The Shops at Gainey Village at 8877 N. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss.
