The Scottsdale Realtor for the Scottsdale Lifestyle. I am an avid golfer and grew up on the golf course. My father was a golf professional for over 42 years and I am married to a golf professional as well. Golf is in my blood and real estate is my passion so the two paired together are heaven for me. YOU ASKED!

Q:

Dr. Gino Tutera, SottoPelle® founder answers your questions.

Why are so many people now getting hormone replacement using pellets?

Q: When did pellet therapy start? A: Pellet therapy originated in Europe over 75

years ago and was introduced to the U.S. by Dr. Greenblatt at the University of Georgia. Pellet hormone therapy has been extensively researched and studied in medical journals all over the world since 1935, yet many people don’t realize that pellet therapy was actually regularly employed in the United States from the 1940’s through the 1970’s until pharmaceutical marketing intruded. Pellets were designed to change the internal physiology by reconstructing the hormone levels as close to what a woman or a man would possess in their late thirties or early forties.

Q: Why did you get involved? A: I became involved with pellet therapy at Eisenhower Medical Hospital, in Rancho Mirage, CA, in 1992. I was approached by Dr. Donald McEwen to see if I could help him insert pellets. I agreed but asked, “What are pellets?” This is the exact same response I hear from other doctors every day all over the world. Dr. Donald McEwen was taught by Dr. Greenblatt, so you might say this is only two degrees of separation from the physician who first started working with them in the U.S. The more I spoke and worked with patients the more I realized there was a need to individualize the dose for each patient’s HRT treatment. We all don’t wear the same size shoe, so why would anyone expect everyone to have the same pellet dose? A light bulb went off and I started individualizing patients with their own customized dose, which is widely used today.

Q: Fear not the testosterone pellet! A: The majority of people fear hormones and especially testosterone. What they don’t realize is every human being, including women, needs and makes testosterone. As a matter of fact, women make 300mgm/day when they are in their prime! Testosterone pellets can be used to treat migraines and menstrual headaches. It can be an effective treatment for vaginal dryness, incontinence, urinary urgency and frequency. In both men and women, testosterone has been shown to increase energy, relieve depression, increase sense of well-being, relieve anxiety and improve memory and concentration. Testosterone pellets can increase lean body mass (muscle strength, bone density) and decrease fat mass. Men and women need continuous adequate levels which can only be achieved with testosterone pellets for optimal mental and physical health and for the prevention of chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, which have been associated with low testosterone levels.

Q: What makes your practice so different than anyone else doing pellets? A: I pioneered an innovative method of customized dosing that provides each patient with a precise amount of the highest quality bio-identical hormone suited to his or her individual needs. Prior to this development, patients were administered a one-size-fits-all generic dose of hormone, which is less effective and can trigger unwanted side effects. Many practices offer bio-identical hormone pellets but do not use our unique patent-pending dosing system based on science. For them it might be guesswork. While often copied but never duplicated, SottoPelle remains the leader in pellet hormone therapy with its ground-breaking science.

heers to February! There is so much going on this month. From Valentine’s Day (need date ideas? See page 72) to art shows (page 68) to Cocktail Week, it’s a busy month. We had the chance to sit down with Layla Linn, one of the co-founders of Cocktail Week, to learn about her intriguing story. Like most of the rest of us, Linn’s road to her current career wasn’t a straight and clear path. In fact, it was a series of random events that led her to where she is today–a corporate mixologist and the only person in Arizona to hold the prestigious B.A.R. certification. Find out how sprint car racing and the Miss New Mexico pageant helped shape her life in our story on page 46. It was also time for our annual story highlighting our favorite bartenders. Did your favorite make the list? To find out, check out our story on page 51. And if you’re looking for inspiration on giving back to others, read about how the three sisters behind the popular My Sister’s Closet store are helping the community. We’ll toast to that.

THREE’S COMPANY

The siblings behind My Sister’s Closet are giving back in a big way BY SHANA SCHWARZ

Prada purse or a Tiffany necklace for a big percentage off the price—who wouldn’t jump at that deal? Surprisingly, when sisters Ann Siner (CEO and co-founder), Jenny Siner (co-founder) and Tess Loo (chief fashion stylist and co-founder) launched My Sister’s Closet over two decades ago, it wasn’t an easy concept to sell.

up close “A store was born in 1991 after Ann discovered ‘resale’ shopping at a store in Texas while on a business trip for PetSmart,” says Tess. “The second-hand store idea was planted, [my] sister Jenny was just out of college, and research showed that Phoenix didn’t have any quality consignment stores. It took months to convince a landlord to let us try our concept of a high-end resale store, but Town & Country shopping center at 20th Street and Camelback finally let Ann and Jenny open My Sister’s Closet.” Since then, the original location has done so well that additional locations and concepts have been opened, including a men’s clothing consignment store (Well Suited) and a furniture/home goods store (My Sister’s Attic). All three store concepts give people a chance to sell designer items that they no longer use. In turn, shoppers looking for a bargain on quality merchandise know exactly where to look. “An estimate of our own personal homes and closets would say that at least 75 percent of our belongings came from My Sister’s Closet, My Sister’s Attic or Well Suited,” says Tess. “Everyone thinks that as the owners, we get first pick, but what they don’t realize is that our stores literally put out thousands of new items every single day. The best stories are from customers who say they never could have afforded ‘fill in the blank with your favorite designer,’ but thanks to these stores, they now own something they could only dream of before. From a cashmere Hermès throw to Restoration leather chairs, these are the things I found at our stores that I adore and would have struggled to otherwise buy.” “When we first opened, Jenny and I worked our little store every day and met many people,” says Ann. “We often had to convince customers that it was okay to buy something used. When we would see a customer that we recognized outside of the store, they often looked the other way like they didn’t want to be recognized for shopping resale. Now when we meet someone and say that we own My Sister’s Closet, the usual comment is, ‘I love that store!’”

Though some people might find it difficult to work so closely with family members, Jenny says that isn’t the case for this family. “Ann and I have worked together for almost 24 years and usually agree on most business decisions,” she says. “We complement one another as I’m the artistic side of the business while Ann does best with numbers and notes. Tess joined the business a few years ago and brings a fashion side to My Sister’s Closet. We sometimes even vacation together, so there’s a lot of sisterly time and a lot of time talking about the business.” The sisters have made a name for themselves locally as dedicated philanthropists, a point of pride for the familyowned company. “Our favorite charities are those that help animals, nature and women,” says Ann. “Over the years, our donations of both unsold goods and money have totaled over $1 million dollars. The list includes: Arizona Humane Society, Defenders of Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center, HALO

Animal Rescue, Friends of Animal Care & Control, Fresh Start Women’s Resource Center, Phoenix Art Museum, Desert Botanical Garden, Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center, Rancho Coastal Humane, PETA, AZ Animal Welfare League, plus others. “I serve on the board of directors for AZ Humane Society, The Nature Conservancy AZ, Phoenix Art Museum, Fresh Start and on the National Council for Defenders of Wildlife. Tess [and I] are chairing the Phoenix Art Museum’s biggest fundraiser of the year, called The pARTy, on Feb. 28. We also chaired the Fresh Start Gala in 2014, raising nearly $1 million. And in 2014, we started our own 501©3 nonprofit called My Sisters’ Charities. We opened a thrift store, created a fundraising event called Dinner with Wolves, and donated the profits to other animal-related groups. We are proud to say that we donated 32 percent of our net profits to these groups in 2013.” Visit www.mysisterscloset.com for locations, more information, or to shop online.

How to handle fine hair -Ask the expert! Rodney Gentry, Full-service Designer and Hair Color Specialist, Sachi Studios

Q: We’ve focused on the problems and solutions of fine hair here, but are there also advantages to it? RG: Of course! Fine hair can look stunning, just like all other types of hair. Fine hair tends to be soft and silky. This makes it harder to style, but the flip side is that it can almost glow with a wonderful, natural shine. Those with curly fine hair will also find they spend much less time straightening it than their thicker-haired friends. Fine hair is also brilliant for the summer months, when it helps to keep the head cooler. Just like all other hair types, fine hair comes with plentiful advantages, as well as its own particular issues!

From static issues to limp, dull styles, fine hair can sometimes feel impossible to get right. Thankfully, expert color specialist Rodney Gentry, based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, is here to help! Q: First, why is it that some of us have finer hair than others? Rodney Gentry: Fine hair results when each individual strand of hair has a small circumference, so that individual strands are not as large as those belonging to other people whose hair has a wider circumference. Q: Do people with fine hair have particular problems as a result of the hair’s fineness? RG: Clients with fine hair tend to come to me with a similar range of complaints. While fine hair can look sleek and beautiful, it can be difficult to style. Many clients also wish for more volume to their hair. Q: How do you help them to overcome these issues? RG: There are plenty of options for those with fine hair. Highlights are one way to add volume and texture, and lowlights can work really well, too. It is really incredible what you can do with color. Clients always get a boost when they see how different their fine hair looks after it has undergone a color treatment. There are also some great products on the market to help with fine hair. I’m loving the René Furterer Volumea range right now. The four products—shampoo, conditioner, conditioning spray and a volumizing foam—harness the power of natural ingredients like carob in order to create long-lasting volume that leaves the hair bouncy and lightweight. Products like these work wonders, and it is great to be able to introduce clients to them and know how much they will enjoy the effect that they have. Simple things like drying technique can also make a big difference. People with fine hair should lift the hair outward and upward as they dry if they want maximum volume. They should also avoid brushing it when wet, as fine hair can break very easily.

Q: What other problems do people with fine hair face? RG: Fine hair can be more prone to damage than thick hair, so those with fine hair need to be careful about over-styling and the use of chemical treatments. Here at Rodney Gentry, we specialize in using products that are kind to the hair, and that nurture it at the same time as coloring it. I don’t believe that there is any place for harsh chemical treatments in a modern salon—they just aren’t necessary anymore. Enzyme-based products can color hair beautifully, and are so much kinder to it than the old peroxide-based treatments. Q: Can you recommend any quick fixes for those with fine hair? RG: Well, a quick trip to Sachi Studios, for one! For those after a quick fix at home, I would recommend always having a deep conditioning masque on hand, ready to be used as a weekly treatment or whenever particularly luscious locks are required. On a daily basis, it really doesn’t get much better than the René Furterer Volumea line for those looking for added body.

Rodney Gentry can be contacted on 480.639.2000, via rodneygentry@rodneygentry.com, or at www.rodneygentry.com. Visit him at Sachi Studios, 10201 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste. 28, Scottsdale, AZ 85258.

HEALING SPA Stacey LeClair shares her journey BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

S

tacy LeClair thought she had life figured out in her early 20s: two little girls, a husband, a career in the mortgage business. As sometimes happens, though, life turned upside down. She ended up nearly dying from a severe thyroid condition. By age 27, she was a widower with two young girls. During her healing, she found spas. “The spa is a healing place to go to take care of yourself,” explains LeClair. Finally a survivor, LeClair wanted to offer others the kindness, compassion and healing she had received. After receiving her esthetician’s license, she started New Serenity Spa in 2008. The signature Serenity and Miracle Facial became so popular that LeClair expanded to seven rooms in September 2013, now offering facials, massages, and transformational life coaching. The hallmark at New Serenity is the focus on the client. “People say they feel the positive energy when they walk in,” she says. LeClair is quick to give credit for her success to an amazing staff. “It wasn’t a journey I embarked on alone.” 15609 N. Hayden Road, #138, Scottsdale; 480.405.8366; www.newserenityspa.com.

Etc.

What has been your biggest motivator? When you’re on the precipice of success, you question if you’re deserving. I try to remember my favorite quote: “Let your light shine so bright that those in darkness can see their way out of the darkness.” What do you do for fun? I go to the spa. I also love photography—it keeps me grounded. Family time is important. I love Vanity Blowout Bar— it’s my go-to place when I want to take care of myself. What is one of your favorite things at New Serenity Spa? Life coaching is one of the most enriching experiences. You can see the hope come back into people.” Was the expansion exciting? That was the hardest year of my life. Faith got me through it. Being responsible for more than 20 employees is a humbling experience. But, I’m ready to expand [again], so look for an additional New Serenity Spa in 2015.” SO SCOTTSDALE! |

MATT

LAURA

Where do you feel most at home? There’s no place like being in our own home. We work a lot so when we’re home it’s a special retreat from the outside world.

What’s your favorite quote? “I’d rather be Lucky than smart”. I’ve found you make your own luck with a lot of hard work.

Do you have a favorite Annual Valley Event? The Waste Management Phoenix Open by far is my favorite event. My father took me to the Open in 1997 and I watched Tiger Woods make a hole-in-one on a par 3. I was hooked from there.

Why have you chosen North Scottsdale as your home? Matt’s job relocation brought us here in 1997. This spring will be 18 years here, and I can’t imagine calling any other place home. Plane, train, or automobile? I’ll take a trip that includes all three. I enjoy the variety and excitement of new and different adventures. If you could only have one meal the rest of your life, what would it be? Hmmm. I love to make and eat fresh pico de gallo. It’s not really a meal, but something I could eat everyday. What’s your favorite movie? One of my all time favorites is Gone with the Wind. I can feel the grit and strength of Scarlett O’Hara when I’m facing challenges.

If you can only have one meal the rest of your life, what would it be? It should be great! Lobster bisque, shrimp & avocado salad, grilled black cod with garlic, spinach & garlic, French baguette & butter, and a good Willamette Pinot Noir. Have you discovered any Scottsdale gems? Brown Ranch Trailhead is a favorite. There are many hiking trails and not much elevation change. You can walk for hours - very peaceful. Why have you chosen North Scottsdale as your home? We came to Arizona in 1997. We looked for a home all over the Valley, but driving up Happy Valley Road we knew we found the place we wanted to live. This spring will mark 18 years in Troon Village and I can’t imagine calling any other place home.

Who would you most like to be stuck in an elevator with? Oprah Winfrey. She’s articulate, philanthropic, successful, and poised. Do you live by any motto or philosophy? As my Mother has always said, “Sometimes, it’s better to be kind than right“. I find that to be an important characteristic to have in both business and personal relationships. What cheers you up? Although these two may seem counterintuitive, I love working out and chocolate brownies! What’s on your bucket list, that you’ve already been able to cross off? Traveling to France, Italy, Fiji, and Australia. Traveling is definitely a passion of mine.

“We could not have been happier with Lisa Lucky and her team. The marketing was outstanding. When our home sold in less than 2 weeks, we needed to find a new one quickly so her knowledge of the area was appreciated. Her advice and availability gave us great confidence in all our contracts from sale, to purchase, to rental as we were remodeling. We have recommended Lisa to others who have been extremely pleased. Lisa helped to make things go seamlessly.” – Barbara and Peter Glanville

ART FOR THE HEART

Judi Combs helps veterans heal BY SHANA SCHWARZ

T

he number of service men and women returning home with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) has reached nearly epidemic levels in our country. Judi Combs wanted to do something about it. “Already working seven-days-a-week with two businesses, I felt bad that I had no hours left to volunteer for our great American veterans,” Combs explains. “I called my brother, Dennis Long, and his wife, Judy (partners with Arizona Fine Art EXPO), to see how they felt about donating a room at the EXPO for the veterans to help their healing process through the arts [by providing them with free art classes]. Dennis and Judy are also board members for the charity [www.americanhealingartsfoundation.org] and quickly replied, ‘Yes.’ And this is how it all began.” With multiple relatives previously or currently serving in the military, it’s a cause that is near and dear to Combs’ heart. It’s easy for her to point out what has been most rewarding. “The success stories. And, every time I enter the room, I thank the veterans for my freedoms and they quickly respond by thanking me for their classes,” she says. “I am honored to be in the presence of such terrific, polite, and honorable citizens who have served our country.”

Etc.

How can people support American Healing Arts Foundation? They can help us spread the word to our great veterans that we offer free art classes (free supplies included), or become volunteer instructors, volunteers for fundraisers, general office support, or volunteers to transport our veterans or donations. What medium do you prefer when you create art? I was an oil painter many years ago, but my creative side now is producing TV commercials, and working with our graphic artist on advertising, postcards, invitations, etc. Anything else you’d like to share? As many other smaller struggling charities, we’d love to be considered by the companies that need a tax break as their choice of donation for their Arizona Charitable Tax Credit. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

essie Maness gets to wake up every day and go to a job that she loves. Maness is the designated manager at European Wax Center at the company’s Hilton Village location. She is responsible for coaching and motivating the team, overseeing the front desk and promotions, leading meetings, and making sure everything runs smoothly on a daily basis. You can typically find Maness wearing classic colors like black and white, and she likes stripes and pops of color. She also sports statement pieces like a blazer or scarf, and loves a good fitted top or skinny jean. Some of her favorite stores are Roka and Diva boutiques, and she gravitates toward brands like Aldo, Michael Kors, and Tory Burch for shoes. In her free time, Maness enjoys spending quality time with her son, who just turned a year old. They enjoy going on walks and playing at the park. What is one of your favorite outfits? My favorite outfit in my closet is probably... my skinny jeans, black riding boots, a simple fitted V-neck tee, with my leather jacket, of course, and an infinity scarf. What is the best part about being a mom? The best part about being a mom is the sense of overwhelming unconditional love that I share [with] my son. I never knew it was possible to love like this. He is my whole world. I love coming home from work and seeing him with a huge smile on his face when he sees me.

For his Smasher & Maria show on 94.5 KOOL FM, Smasher devotes a lot of his time prepping for his show, but he also plays amateur baseball—and is a major league bullpen relief catcher for the Texas Rangers. Keeping with the active theme, Smasher got his name because he skis and surfs. He also enjoys hiking the Echo Canyon trail on Camelback Mountain. Smasher describes his style as “classic and clean cut,” and keeps it polished in Ralph Lauren. He loves shopping at Nordstrom and Macy’s, and enjoys wearing Levi’s 501 jeans and Merrell shoes. Smasher likes to spend time at Studio Movie Grill, and some of his favorite local restaurants are Capital Grille, Portillo’s Hot Dogs, and Manuel’s.

What are you most excited about for baseball season? I am very excited about the baseball season approaching because of the simple thrill of being allowed to put on a Texas Rangers Major League uniform and be around the game I love so much. How do you juggle all of your careers and hobbies? I juggle things by getting eight hours of sleep... If I don’t get eight, I can’t function. What advice do you have for people who want to live out more than one of their dreams? I was told at a very young age that you should love what you do and always follow your passion.

efore she co-founded Arizona Cocktail Week and before she became the only B.A.R. certified individual in Arizona, ADS & Corporate Mixologist Layla Linn was… Miss New Mexico!? “I can’t believe I just told you that—I have friends who don’t know that,” says Linn, before launching into one of the most improbable of Miss USA Pageant success stories.

Born and raised in the Albuquerque area with four brothers, Linn grew up in the world of sprint car racing. “Most of my family—even my sisterin-law—drove professionally or semi-professionally at one time or another,” says Linn. “If it wasn’t for my love of racing, neither the beauty pageant nor the beverage industry career probably would have happened.” When Linn left for college at New Mexico State University, she was delighted to find that the Southern New Mexico Speedway was nearby, where she could keep up with the sport. It was there where she also met another race fan, the owner of the Desert Sun Bar in Las Cruces. “For some reason, the idea of bartending my way through college seemed so glamorous and fun, so I went for it, asking the owner to give me a shot,” says Linn. Being just 18, she was too young to bartend. So, she started waiting tables at the Sun, where she met a veteran bartender who took Linn under her wing. “I remember she would tell me every single step to make various cocktails, and then have me recite everything back to her day after day,” says Linn. “When the owner was later able to give me an opportunity at the bar on a busy Friday night, I knew most of the drinks like the back of my hand.” Quickly, Linn became not only a successful bartender, but a popular one. “My regulars were a kick, but one in particular was a bit odd—a woman who would come in and ask me personal questions. I assumed she was scouting me out as a date for her son,” says Linn. “Boy, was I wrong.” It turns out the woman produced the Miss New Mexico USA Pageant and saw potential in Linn. “For three months, she talked to me about the benefits of pageants, while I mostly just laughed and continued pouring drinks,” says Linn. She eventually told the crazy idea to her father, but he didn’t laugh. “He thought obtaining sponsors and developing a very public speaking opportunity would be great experience for my planned career in business,” says Linn. “When my dad tells me to do something, I do it.” Before she knew it, Linn was not only signed on for the pageant, but found support from her Desert Sun family. “I could not believe how many of my regulars jumped at the chance to help me, which made for some funny sponsors. Couple that with my brothers and all of our macho racing friends coming out to the pageant—what a scene,” says Linn. When the time finally came for the winner to be announced, the host began—as most pageants do—with fifth runner-up. By the time he got to third runner-up, the competitive Linn was a little disappointed. “I knew I wasn’t going to win, but I figured I would at least earn fourth or fifth place,” says Linn, who remembers the outgoing Miss New Mexico—who went to high school with one of Linn’s brothers—mouthing something to her on the stage. At first she couldn’t make it out, but then it happened—Linn was announced as Miss New Mexico USA for 1995-1996. “She was mouthing, ‘You won. You won,’” says Linn, who does not recall much of the crowning. “The only thing I really remember is hearing all of these men screaming and jumping in the audience—it was my brothers and our friends losing their minds with excitement.” Her reign led her to the Miss USA Pageant in South Padre Island in 1996, and then a new adventure—Arizona. “My friend moved to Arizona for a teaching job in 1997, and almost immediately she called to tell me this was my kind of town,” says Linn. “I up and moved here three weeks later—and have never looked back.” The two friends rented a small apartment in Scottsdale as they got on their feet, and enjoyed the then-small bar and club scene that was beginning to flourish in the area.

“I STOOD OUT NOT BECAUSE I WAS A FEMALE, BUT BECAUSE I ENJOYED THE PRESSURE AND BECAUSE I WAS NEVER AFRAID TO TAKE CHANCES WITH MY DRINK—I LOVED INVENTING NEW COCKTAILS AND RE-IMAGING THE CLASSICS.” “My first night in town I was at Dos Gringos in Old Town and I noticed this guy eating the most enormous burrito I had ever seen,” says Linn. “Being a good New Mexico girl, I had to know about this burrito. Next thing I know, he is making me a list of bars and clubs for potential job opportunities in town.” That burrito conversation would lead Linn to a bartending job at Tutto, which then led to major gigs with Axis/Radius and Suede. “I stood out not because I was a female, but because I enjoyed the pressure and because I was never afraid to take chances with my drink—I loved inventing new cocktails and re-imaging the classics,” says Linn, who would eventually be recruited by Skyy Spirits to oversee marketing efforts in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada. The Skyy opportunity gave Linn the chance to travel extensively, as well as share her love of mixology with local talent.

“One of my proudest moments was sitting at MercBar in the early 2000s explaining the benefits of flavored vodka, which was an oddity at the time,” says Linn. “I pulled out Skyy Citron and asked for some strawberries, mint and a few other items they already had on hand. That day, I created the Sophia Loren cocktail for them—which is still on the menu today.” Linn would eventually be called on by major brands in the Valley, including RA Sushi, Cateye and Madison to develop cocktail programs, as well as recruited by Mastro’s Ocean Club in Scottsdale to serve in an in-house role. “In 2007, everything changed in an instant,” says Linn. “I was making drinks for a sea of people from across the globe at Ocean Club during Phoenix Open weekend when a glass shattered in my hand, almost slicing off my finger.” Though she rushed to the hospital and got stitches, something didn’t seem right. Within five days, she lost all feeling in her finger. Before she knew it, Linn was in surgery. “I didn’t know it, but had cut ligaments and arteries and nerves. If I would have waited much longer to get help, I would have lost my finger, maybe more,” says Linn, who notes the injury was so severe that it effectively ended her 10-plus year bartending career overnight. Thankfully, her prowess at mixology preceded her. Linn joined Alliance Beverage in 2008, overseeing such brands as Don Julio, Crown Royal, Kettle One, Johnny Walker and Tanqueray. Alliance believed so much in her skill that the company eventually supported her through the elite B.A.R. certification program. “B.A.R. is led by six of the world’s leading spirits and cocktails authorities, Dale DeGroff, Doug Frost, Steven Olson, F. Paul Pacult, Andy Seymour and David Wondrich,” says Linn. “Each year, they only accept 32 candidates worldwide for this all-encompassing program.” Earning the certification is an educational achievement in the field of spirits and mixology in the spirit of the Master of Wine or Master Sommelier titles. Linn is the only person—male or female—in Arizona to hold the designation, thus far. Armed with her B.A.R. and decades-old friends in the business, Linn helped develop the local chapter of the United States Bartenders Guild and develop Alliance Beverage’s first-ever “test bar,” called 18 East, in recent years. But, perhaps her most exciting project of passion in recent years is happening this month. “In 2012, I put my head together with Valley cocktail heavyweights Ross Simon, Jason Girard, Jason Asher, Kim Haasarud and Tony Giordano, regarding the idea of a part-industry, part-community event to both celebrate the growing cocktail culture in Arizona, as well as move the industry forward with seminars and on-going education,” says Linn. “The idea grew into Arizona Cocktail Week.” Now in its fourth year, and taking place from Feb. 14-21, nationally renowned mixologists will partner with Arizona’s homegrown talent to provide educational seminars, interactive tastings, cocktail competitions, pool parties, and more. More than 50 events will take place statewide. “We have eight seminars planned—many open to the consumer—as well as our cocktail carnival set at The Hotel Valley Ho, and then both pop-up cocktail bars statewide and our wildly popular Imbibe’n’Dine cocktail-pairing dinners happening all week long,” says Linn. “And that is just scratching the surface. My favorite event has to be the Last Slinger Standing bartending competition, held on Monday night in Downtown Phoenix.” Cocktail Week presenters include leading industry professionals from Riedel Glassware, The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Death & Co out of NYC (rated the best bar in the country), and many of Linn’s former B.A.R. instructors. As in years past, there will also be an Arizona Cocktail Week wristband available for just $10 that grants wearers access to several events for free, as well as deep discounts on cocktails from leading bars and clubs statewide. Wristbands are available at BevMo locations statewide. Visit www.arizonacocktailweek.com for upcoming event information, and be sure to watch for Linn’s eye-popping innovative cocktails on drink menus in Scottsdale and beyond. FEBRUARY 2015 |

When you take a seat at the bar at a restaurant, what makes your experience great is not only how good your drink is, but also, the personality of the bartender who serves it to you. Our favorite bartenders are full of personality, easy to talk with, and fun窶馬ot to mention, they pour a mean drink. Cheers to that.

What you love about bartending: My favorite part of being behind the bar is getting to know people who you would otherwise never meet. I’ve been fortunate to meet people of every profession, from all over the world. The memories, anecdotes, and friendships created at the bar are what I love most about being a bartender. Favorite drink to make: Sweet drinks for big guys who look like they just got out of prison. And Whisky Rocks for their girlfriends. Favorite drink you’ve created: The Irish Exit, named after the term used when a friend leaves without saying goodbye during a night of heavy drinking (also known as the Houdini). 1.5 oz. Jameson Irish Whisky 0.5 oz. Montenegro Amaro 3 dashes of plum bitters 0.75 oz. fresh lime juice 10 muddled mint leaves Shaken, topped with ginger beer You find inspiration in: I’m inspired by my friend Randy Embernate of Hellbent Brewing in Seattle. We bartended together in Hawaii, and to this day, I haven’t met anyone quicker to turn a stranger into a friend. He can carry on a conversation with just about anyone. I try to emulate his loquaciousness behind the bar. Drink that is ordered most at your bar: Jameson, and cocktails containing Jameson. Person you’d most like to pour a drink for: The “Tips For Jesus” guy. That would make a nice addition to my treasure trove of bar anecdotes. What do you order when you go out? I enjoy Jameson and ginger beer or a nice Manhattan, no vermouth sub a splash of Luxardo. Any secret bartending tip or talent? I like to offer shots whenever I can and introduce friends at the bar who have yet to meet. “We’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time.” Cheers. What you love about bartending: I love the guest interaction and creating a great individual experience. Favorite drink to make: The classic cocktails: Manhattan, Old Fashioned, Sidecar... etc. Favorite drink you’ve created: I call it Fireside Chats. In a snifter, equal parts of Nonino Amaro and Bulleit Rye, with a clove studded orange twist. You find inspiration in: My dogs, sports, and news. SKIN LAUNDRY A fresh spin on healthy skin BY LISA KASANICKY

F

resh from the Santa Monica shores, Skin Laundry has landed in Scottsdale with a new spin on high-tech skincare. Now open at Scottsdale Quarter, Skin Laundry is blanketed in a clean, sleek vibe that echoes its modern, no-frills approach to healthy skin. Inspired in part by L.A.’s fast-paced, health-driven lifestyle, the beauty brand was founded by innovator Yen Reis. Plagued by problematic skin herself, Reis first discovered the transformational power of light and laser skin therapy treatments while living in Asia. After relocating to the U.S., she discovered a void in the market for accessible, affordable treatments—and Skin Laundry was born. With this location at Scottsdale Quarter, which is the company’s sixth overall (and the first of its kind in Arizona), Skin Laundry is poised to buck the perception that laser skin treatments come with a price—one that takes a toll on your wallet, as well as your time. At the core of the Skin Laundry philosophy is that everyone deserves to have beautiful skin, just minus the hefty rates and downtime. The service menu is refreshingly simple. Skin Laundry’s signature laser treatment goes pore deep to vaporize the dirt, debris, pollutants and toxins. The beauty is that clients are in and out of the clinic in about 10 minutes. SS_58_59NowOpen_Feb15.indd 58

Skin Laundry newbies will be asked to first fill out the paperless registration. Once you’re signed in, you’ll remove your makeup with a cleansing towel. You’ll then be escorted to a treatment room where you’ll lie back, don protective eye goggles, and relax as the tech passes the laser over your skin—a process that takes about two minutes. Skin Laundry clients are met with immediate results, including smoother, tighter, brighter skin. With multiple treatments, long-term improvements include reduced signs of sun damage, less visible wrinkles, less redness, clearer skin, and a more even skin tone and texture. While a single treatment will run you $75, the membership packages and series options bring the price down significantly, depending on which you choose. You can maintain your glow between treatments with Skin Laundry’s line of everyday skin products, available both online and at the clinic. Skin Laundry’s Scottsdale Quarter location features four private treatment rooms with comfortable beds and a minimalist color palette punctuated by California-inspired artwork. Take a spin yourself—you may just discover a new love for doing Laundry. 15037 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste. 160; 480.300.7217; www.skinlaundry.com.

THE NATURAL FAT SOLUTION

PRE OP - FAT TRANSFER TO UPPER 2/3RDS OF FACE WITH LIFT TO LOWER 1/3 OF FACE

POST OP - FAT TRANSFER TO UPPER 2/3RDS OF FACE WITH LIFT TO LOWER 1/3 OF FACE

Have you ever looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize the image staring back at you? Sunken eyes, cheeks, temples and lips tell you you’re melting away. How is it possible that the extra fat of your thighs, hips and abdomen will NOT melt away with diet and exercise, but your facial fullness and softness too readily deflates into nothingness. There’s a solution to this dilemma…the Natural Fat Solution. Why not use your hated body and thigh fat to correct the deflation of facial aging? Over the last 18 years ,Doctor Andrew Wolin has been using fat harvested from each patient’s lower extremity and torso to rejuvenate, restore and reclaim their youthful facial form. A pioneer in the field of auto fat transfers, he has performed thousands of rejuvenating procedures on many patients who were reluctant to undergo more invasive surgery and were candidates for re-volumization rather than classic face lifting. Although Dr Wolin does incorporate fat grafting in many of his facelift patients, he has found that in many cases, fat alone will be an amazingly rewarding procedure and provide his patients with a phenomenal, natural and permanent tool against the deflation of aging. Another benefit is the definite improvement in the health and quality of the re-inflated skin. It appears that the simultaneous transfer of Adult Stem Cells with the Fat Cell Transfer contributes to the amazing results…. a result that is greater than the sum of all the parts. Call today and see if you’re a candidate for the Natural Fat Solution.

Dr. Andrew Wolin has been a leader in the plastic surgical community of Scottsdale since 1985, and his extensive years of experience benefit each patient. His top-notch reputation as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and for cutting-edge procedures draws patients from near and far. Dr. Wolin is the Medical Director of the Wolin Plastic Surgery Center. His practice offers a full-range of face and body procedures, including facelifts, browlifts, nose surgery, facial fillers, BOTOX® Cosmetic, fat transfers, fotofacialsTM, laser skin resurfacing, ear sur- gery, SmartlipoTM, breast augmentations, breast implant/exchanges, breast reductions, breast lifts, arm lifts, bodylifts, liposuction, and tummy tucks. Discovering

Love

How TRUmatch can mix, match, and mentor anyone into coupled bliss

If you’re single, you’ve heard it a million times: there are plenty of fish in the sea. You hear it from friends, from your mother, and from every dating website. But if that’s the case, why are you still catching seaweed? “Anybody can boast about the amount of people in their database,” says Leslee Alexander Gibbs. A relationship expert and the founder of TRUmatch – a revolutionary matchmaking service with an astonishing 96% success rate – she knows a thing or two (or ten!) about what makes partnerships work. And what most dating services get wrong, she says, is starting with a laundry list of must-have attributes in a partner … when the most important place to start is you. This is why TRUmatch clients start with a revealing 90-minute “discovery session,” designed to get to the heart of who they really are. Delving into past relationship patterns and ideals provides a valuable look at their intrinsic motivations, painting a clear picture of what they are truly passionate about. Only when a person knows who they truly are, states Leslee, can a relationship fulfill their innermost needs … needs that, in some cases, they didn’t even know they had. “We find our clients’ patterns, help to change them, and then find a partner whose values deeply merge with theirs,” she says. “That is the essence of what creates a lasting relationship.” Leslee knows firsthand the soulcrushing loneliness of a failed relationship. Twelve years ago, her thriving career as the owner of a successful spokesmodel agency made it look as though she had it all – but inside, she was in turmoil as her marriage crumbled. She found herself a divorced single mother, devastated and

SS_62_73Do_Cal_Out_Feb15.indd 65

seeking answers. “I started out on my own journey to understand what went wrong,” she says. As it turns out, this journey to personal development was life-changing in more ways than she had imagined. She used her newfound knowledge to conduct relationship workshops for women, which became so wildly popular that Leslee began to ponder how she could further help people. Thus, she followed her passion, and TRUmatch was born. These days, the relationship workshops are just one small part of what TRUmatch does, but they’re more popular than ever: the loveMBA Program, for example. In six courses, you can discover why certain patterns don’t work, learn how to create the relationship you’ve always desired, and experience the insight and clarity that sets TRUmatch head and shoulders above its competitors. And if you’re wondering why you’re struggling to find “The One,” TRUmatch sets out to answer that question in its upcoming event, “Why Am I Still Single?” The session for women is on February 17th at 6 p.m., and the men’s session is February 18th at 6 p.m. – and for a limited time, you can snag a discount of 50% off the registration fee by entering the code “SCOTTSDALE50.” (Simply go to www. mytrumatch.com/events to register.) Whether you’re searching for a new partner or hoping to strengthen an existing relationship, TRUmatch can help; Leslee has spent years making sure of it. “It’s heartwarming. It makes me so excited,” she says. “We really have discovered the secret formula to love.” Contact TRUmatch at 480-664-0007 x210 or visit www.mytrumatch.com.

ART IN PROGRESS

Art develops within 115 studios at the Arizona Fine Art EXPO BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

I

t’s time for all things artistic, creative, inspirational and whimsical. In fact, with 115 working studios filled with award-wining artists, as well as a twoacre Sonoran Sculpture Garden, musicians, wine tastings, parties, Veteran art classes, and more, the Arizona Fine Art EXPO is not only a memorable event, but a premier destination for attendees from all over the country. The 10-week extravaganza (it began in Jan.), which was created by Thunderbird Artists—a family-run business that produces fine art and fine wine festivals—has just about everything and anything. Set in 44,000 square feet of space are 115 working art studios, where guests have the chance to meet the artists and watch as they work. In fact, the Arizona Fine Art EXPO is all about connecting and taking an artistic journey together—patrons, artists and attendees included. The artists work in a variety of mediums, from sketching passionately in pencil, charcoal and pastels; to sculpting and firing clay; drilling, chiseling and carving stone; painting in all media; delicately etching on scratchboard; staining and etching gourds; designing lost wax castings; soldering and welding jewelry; assembling mosaics; and more. And, the art is for sale (commissions are also welcome). The festival also features a Koi pond provided by the event’s sponsors, The Pond Gnome. You can watch the colorful Koi fish swim and splash under the cascading waters falling from natural rocks. The Arizona Fine Art EXPO is where attendees can watch “Art being Made in America.” And who knows? Maybe your presence at the festival will ignite inspiration and turn an artist’s blank canvas into a true masterpiece.

our mission, should you choose to accept it, is to eat dessert all month long at some of the most fabulous venues in the Northeast Valley! That is because the local Girl Scout Council announced the return of its award-winning Girl Scout Cookie Dessert Challenge. For the second year in a row, chefs from some of the state’s most popular restaurants will use their culinary prowess to re-imagine one of the beloved flavors of Girl Scout cookies–Do-Si-Dos, Samoas Tagalongs, Thin Mints, Trefoils, and new flavor Rah Rah Raisins–into a custom dessert menu item. Each restaurant will feature its dessert on its menu throughout this month, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the transformation of the local council’s Camp Sombrero to The Leadership Center for Girls and Women. Back for year two are several of the award-winning restaurants that took part in the inaugural challenge, including

more than doubled our restaurant partners for this year to keep up with demand!” Just some of the nearby restaurants new to the challenge this year include 32 Shea, Bink’s Midtown, Bink’s Scottsdale, Rusconi’s American Kitchen, Del Frisco’s Grille, Gelato Spot, Grimaldi’s, Kelly’s at SouthBridge, Over Easy, Sushi Roku, The Henry, and Second Story Liquor Bar. “Calories don’t count when it’s for a good cause,” jokes de Queljoe of the once-a-year-treat, who also notes that there are actually kosher, vegan, and even gluten-free cookie options. Camp Sombrero, located at the base of South Mountain Preserve, is a 14.5acre site that has been owned and used by Girl Scouts for the past 51 years. “It’s time to better utilize this beautiful property and transform it into an urban program center, with camp appeal, to provide leadership training for girls and women; give girls their first camping experience close to home; and serve the surrounding community groups, partner organizations and schools,” says de Queljoe. “We’re halfway to our fundraising goal for Camp Sombrero and look toward beginning phased construction in early 2015.”

PASSION

A

Sarah Kirsch Richardson, Owner/Designated Broker, Tru Realty LLC

n upbringing in Wisconsin, America’s heartland, endowed Sarah Kirsch Richardson with a strong sense of Midwest warmth and hospitality; an education in Arizona provided her with a tough-as-nails work ethic and a sharp knowledge of the realty industry. It’s a unique combination of grace and grit that has served her—but more importantly, clients of her up-and-coming boutique brokerage, Tru Realty—very well. Starting her career in commercial real estate, Sarah received rigorous and extensive training and was quite successful. Still, she found herself drawn to the more personal business of residential realty. Come to find out, her training had more than prepared her to be a perfect fit. “Commercial real estate wasn’t for me, but it gave me the backbone that I needed,” she says. In 2010, she made the jump to residential real estate, deciding to start her own company. Thus, Tru Realty was born. Since then, Sarah has poured her heart and soul into making Tru Realty the flourishing agency that it has become. She has assembled a diverse team of the brightest talents in the industry: savvy agents who know the local market inside and out and stay ahead of the trends, with the skills and experience to ensure a positive transaction every time. Sarah prides herself on Tru Realty’s unparalleled dedication to customer service. The buying or selling of a home can often prove to be an intense, grueling process, but the Tru Realty team is devoted to going the extra mile to make it as painless – and even pleasant – as possible. Implemented by Director of Sales Asher Cohen, their “white-glove service” fully guides and supports every client through each step of the process. This service extends not only to clients, but anyone who has questions about real estate. Sarah and the rest of the Tru team are

always happy to offer their expertise in helping people navigate through their confusion or concerns. It’s a profession that requires the wearing of many hats, but Sarah wouldn’t have it any other way; in fact, she places the utmost importance on building a rapport with her clients and giving them exactly what they need. “I become a psychologist, negotiator, financial planner … so many things,” she says. Each situation presents unique circumstances, and Sarah thrives on getting things done – all the while, making sure that her clients are completely comfortable and wellinformed. The result is a fiercely loyal clientele that not only say they’d never look for help anywhere else, but recommend Tru Realty to their own friends and families. Sarah’s passion for the business is evident, shining through as she talks about Tru Realty and the professionals who make it excel. “We’re in growth mode,” she says excitedly, eagerly anticipating the future of the brokerage. She invites anyone who is thinking about buying or selling their home to give her a call and see for themselves what the gold standard of customer service feels like. It’s a “Tru” passion, and Sarah just can’t wait to share it. She also welcomes agents interested in revitalizing their career with an organization that is definitely pushing the envelope for Arizona real estate.

xecutive Chef Marc Lupino has a standard of excellence that is at heart of what he does every day at Dominick’s Steakhouse in the Scottsdale Quarter.

THE MAN BEHIND THE SHOWSTOPPING STEAKS AND SEAFOOD AT DOMINICK’S STEAKHOUSE - EXECUTIVE CHEF MARC LUPINO

Lupino’s secret weapon - he uses only the best and freshest ingredients, and the very best prime grade, 28 day wet-aged steak, that is cut in house, prepared in their our house steak rub and served sizzling atop a 500-degree plate.

It might be his New York upbringing or perhaps it is just his drive, but Lupino’s attention to detail and perfect timing turns out one exceptionally prepared dish after another and some of the Valley’s best steaks and seafood.

And like the stars you can see from the poolside and roof top dining room at Dominick’s, the food is simply show stopping.

Lupino created Dominick’s Steakhouse cuisine to embody the rich tradition of a fine American steakhouse. Signature dishes include a Bone-In Filet Mignon, King Crab Cluster, Bone In Ribeye chop, Maryland-style lump crab cake, baked clams and Dominick’s au gratin potatoes.

If you’re looking for one of the best chefs in town, a great prime steak, a high-end atmosphere and freshest seafood, Dominick’s in the Scottsdale Quarter is the place. Dominick’s Steakhouse is located in the Scottsdale Quarter at 15169 North Scottsdale Road. Call 480.272.7271 for reservations or visit Dominick’s online at www.dominickssteakhouse.com.

“At Dominick’s everything we serve has to be of the highest quality. Whether it’s one of our many prime grade steaks or the fresh seafood that we have flown in daily from around the country, or even one FEBRUARY 2015 |

of our popular side dishes, at Dominick’s we want every dish to have a starring role and stand on its own,” said Lupino.

DRAFT CHOICE Bad Water Brewing offers a new IPA BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

“T

ruly, it’s my love of marketing and selling something physical that landed me in the beverage industry,” says Lewis Kubitz, the owner of Bad Water Brewing Company. “The beer industry is competitive to say the least, but with a fearless attitude and a passion for perfection, it seemed like the right fit for me. Plus, there is quite a bit of depth to our brand... even an homage in Latin to my grandfather on our Saison label.” One of the newest offerings from Bad Water Brewing is its IPA. Surprisingly light, “It’s still an IPA by all categorical standards, but ours has a light malt profile, with a fair bit of bitterness to give it a strong, drinkable character,” Kubtiz explains. “I believe in making bold, but not overpowering, flavors. We lean towards more citrusy hops in this beer, with just enough complexity in the malts to produce something balanced. IPAs have a great history, and we tried to replicate that heritage.” Bad Water Brewing is headquartered here in Scottsdale, and the company’s only tap room is located in Old Town Scottsdale. In addition to the IPA, the brand offers a Saison and a Western Lager. “Bad Water Brewing’s beer recipes are all uniquely constructed, each different but part of the brand in their own way. We started with a Saison a few years ago, which is now a very hot category. Our beers are not our brand. Bad Water is our brand, and with a name like that you have to earn people’s favor. The quality we put in the bottle is where we place our bets.” The IPA is currently only available on draft, and can be found in many places around the Valley, including the Bad Water Brewing Tap Room ($5 per glass or $150 per keg). 4216 N. Brown Ave., Scottsdale; 480.748.4460; www.badwaterbrewing.com.

IT’S TIME TO REGAIN THE CONFIDENCE YOUR NATURAL TEETH ONCE PROVIDED Would you be surprised if I told you there is a new procedure that can give you a complete set of fixed teeth in one day? This is a new teeth replacement By G. Sroujieh, technique capable DDS, AFAAID of giving patients who are suffering from bad, non-savable teeth or who have been wearing dentures for a long time a beautiful set of teeth in one day.

With this technique we will be able to use four special implants to attach a new set of permanent teeth. In most cases, patients lacking the minimum amount of bone required to support regular dental implants, and who have been told that they were not candidates for implants, will enjoy the benefit of this technique since it requires less bone volume and does not require either bone or soft tissue grafting. The “Teeth in One Day” technique is a new implant procedure that was originally developed to help people with severe bone loss in the posterior area of the jaws. This technique offers the solution of fixed teeth for patients

who until now have had no other option than wearing uncomfortable dentures. Patients usually leave with entire arches of fixed teeth on the same day of their surgery.

How does it work?

Before considering this technique, it is necessary to have your case evaluated by Dr. Sroujieh. During the initial consultation, we will listen to your concerns and offer you solutions based on your specific problems or needs. A clinical exam will be done and X-rays will be taken. Also, we will need a 3D CT SCAN for your jaws so we can plan your dental surgery virtually on the computer using special software. Impressions or molds will be taken also at that visit to fabricate the new set of teeth in our lab. On the day of the surgery, the remaining teeth, if any, will be removed. Four dental implants will be placed and a customized non-removable prosthetic bridge will be attached to the implants. This fixed set of teeth will be used for 3-6 months, after that we will replace it with a permanent strong natural looking one. In the few months following the surgery, known as the healing phase, implants will go through osseointegration, meaning new

bone will form around the implants and make a biological bond with them. During this period the patient will be using their new fixed teeth eating and speaking normally. Three to six months after the surgery, a permanent new set of teeth will be made and attached to the implants. The benefits of this technique: - Ideal solution for patients with poor bone volume - Fewer implants can be used, lowering the cost and easier to clean - Boost in self-esteem - Fixed teeth in one day, no need for removal at night or after meals for cleaning - Fully restored sense of taste - Ability to eat all of your favorite food - No more messy adhesive So if you are tired of wearing loose dentures, Teeth in One Day solution will solve your eating and pronunciation problems. You will never have to experience the crippling effect of eating on moving plates, the embarrassment of dentures slipping during speech, messy adhesive, removing teeth at night, or not being able to enjoy eating and tasting food. With this technique at Dr. Sroujieh’s dental office, we can restore your smile and give you permanent teeth in just one day. Say goodbye to dentures forever!

E

ach year, the Pantone color experts send a proclamation across the land that defines the prevailing palette for fashion, beauty and home design. They gaze into their rainbow-hued crystal ball for a color that captures the mood and flavor of the global temperament. The year 2014 was blanketed in the distinctly feminine color of radiant orchid. For 2015, they chose a color that blends feminine and masculine energies and is both robust and earthy, dramatic and sultry. Meet Pantone 18-1438 Marsala, and prepare for a year that encourages color creativity and burns with warm sophistication. In the beauty department, marsala pairs harmoniously with monochromatic mixes of peachy pinks and antiqued gold metallics. Flattering against most skin tones, the rich color brings a warmth to cheeks and lips, a sophisticated finish to nails, and a sultry depth to eyes. The tawny wine shade is also an alluring color for brunettes, as high or lowlights to add depth to hair color. Make marsala part of your beauty palette with these captivating product picks.

“Marsala enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability. Marsala is a subtly seductive shade, one that draws us in to its embracing warmth.”—Leatrice Eiseman, executive director, Pantone Color Institute

fter a 20-year absence from the U.S. market, Italian automaker Alfa Romeo wants to make a big comeback. The company unveiled growth plans that include new products, starting with the limited edition, irresistible 4C two-seat sports car. Alfa will build only about 2,400 4Cs worldwide, with about 1,200 coming to the U.S. It is hand-built, at considerable expense, in Modena, Italy, with a single carbon fiber Monocoque chassis weighing a mere 236 pounds. The outer body panels are made of a sheet-molded compound that’s 20 percent lighter than steel and is corrosion-resistant. The 4C’s total curb weight is an ultra-light 2,465 pounds. The 4C’s mechanical stats include a 1,750 cc turbocharged I-4,

237-horsepower mid-engine, entirely made of aluminum. It delivers power to the rear wheels via an absolutely stellar six-speed twin-clutch, sequential paddle-shift gear selection transmission with auto mode. Zero to 60 time is just 4.1 seconds, and top speed is 160 mph. Fire up the engine and mellifluous metallic exhaust notes resonate a staccato snapping—like firecrackers in a snare drum—that will push the upper limits of most municipal noise ordinances. Our test car was essentially trackready, with huge 18-inch Pirelli tires up front, super-wide 19-inch tires in back, and massive Brembo brakes with the stopping power of a Howitzer. The suspension is firm, intense and cockpit-selectable with three core settings—Dynamic, Natural and All Weather—for adapting to road or track conditions. Race mode further enhances the driver experience on the track. The 4C dismisses power steering entirely to both minimize weight and maximize the driving experience. But you could ignore its performance creds and simply buy the 4C for looks alone. Its sculptured exterior, low stance (under 48 inches high and 6 feet wide), contoured body panels and distinctive Alfa grille design are phenomenal. The look is athletic, exotic, intoxicating and beautiful. Inside, the 4C is Spartan at best, and almost rude with driver and passenger room. If you’re 6 feet or taller, forget about it. At 6’ 6”, I could barely squeeze behind the wheel. And, the interior is bereft of storage. Not even a glove box, just an elastic pouch under the dash. The trunk might hold one soft-sided duffel bag at best. Still, my advice is to grab one if you can find it. The 4C’s bargain price makes it an absolute steal; anything even close will cost you at least double. REAL ESTATE ROUNDTABLE “OUR NUMEROUS MEDIA OUTLETS, ON-LINE, IN PRINT AND ON TELEVISION, GIVE US AN UNMATCHED ADVANTAGE FOR OUR CLIENTS” - JAMES WEXLER

Scottsdale’s “Mad Men” Realtors

HOW JASON MITCHELL AND JAMES WEXLER PUT THE POWER OF MEDIA TO WORK! Jason Mitchell is on everybody’s radar these days. Hailed as the “Marketing Guru” of Scottsdale real estate, you can find him anywhere you’re tuning in: because he’s everywhere. Jason hosts “Real Talk with Jason Mitchell,” a local talk show where he sits down to pick the brains of the Valley’s most prominent figures, from business owners to politicians to athletes. He hosts a series on Arizona Sports called “Live Like the Pros,” where he highlights properties of local sports icons and athletes. He’s appeared on Bravo, NBC, and has accepted the role of host on the upcoming HGTV series “A Sale of Two Cities.” You can even find him on newsstands, splashed across glossy magazine covers – four last year alone. But then, what else would you expect from the nation’s #1

SS_94_95Dwell_Feb15.indd 95

producing agent under forty for two years running, reaching $35,000,000 in sales during 2014 alone? Jason is a dynamo, and the world is watching. Together with his longtime partner James Wexler and their team, Mitchell Private Realty Group has built a unique brand of media outreach. As a result, The Mitchell Group holds the honor of being the #1 Realty Executives team with $67 million in sales in 2014. “Every agent on our team is in the Top 1% in the nation in terms of units sold,” says Jason. “We pride ourselves on having some of the best agents our clients could ask for.” “Our numerous media outlets,” adds James. “On-line, in print and on television, give us an unmatched advantage for our clients.” James, selected as national cover agent for Top Agent

Magazine in 2014, has seen the numbers skyrocket. “One show has led to another; from there, we get potential buyers searching our sites, reading our blogs, watching our show. It leads to numerous cross-sales, thereby connecting our listings with homebuyers, who benefit substantially as well,” he says. “We’re able to save them money by controlling both sides of the transaction. It’s a total win-win, and the vision Jason and I have had from day one.” Clients of The Mitchell Group can expect a smooth experience from start to finish. Jason’s familiar persona and multiple media outlets provide a definite advantage, giving each listing an automatic edge. “We’re able to create leverage that you can’t find anywhere else,” he says. “This is extremely beneficial to clients in terms of local and national exposure.” But that’s not all: he has also invested much into his company’s software and technology, making sure that even behind-the-scenes processes are streamlined and efficient. This enables The Mitchell Group to offer its clients the unparalleled expertise of its dynamic team, the advantage of cuttingedge systems and techniques, and valuable media exposure – a “triple-whammy” that achieves fantastic results. In a dizzying sea of listings, Jason and his team make sure that theirs stand unmistakably out. Jason and James pursue success for their clients with an indomitable gusto, and never underestimate the value of thinking outside the box. This shift in focus from traditional marketing has set The Mitchell Group on a rapid upward trajectory … and it shows no sign of slowing down. If you haven’t seen Jason Mitchell or James Wexler, turn on the television, turn on the radio, or go to your local grocery store – rest assured, they’ll be there. GAME CHANGER Luxury goes minimalist BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

I

f you’re up for a game of pool, why not take your cue from this game-changing pool table? Made of concrete, it was designed and created by artist James DeWulf. DeWulf is known for his creative designs of functional art that is both modern and eco-friendly, and that are made using raw materials, including concrete technology. In 2004, he launched DeWulf Concrete, turning out furniture and other items that have become synonymous with luxury custom finishes and urban cool, like this pool table. In regards to the table, DeWulf explains that, “My goal with the pool table was to make it visually light. I've found most pool tables to be very bulky. We worked hard to minimize the profile to create a knockout table." SO SCOTTSDALE! |

SS_96_101Haute_Want_Places_Feb15.indd 98

Utilizing his groundbreaking concrete compounding and fabrication procedures to create ultra-thin, extremely strong and flat surfaces, he went to work to create this minimalistic design. The table is made of DeWulf’s proprietary compound, outdoor felt, rubber pockets, graphite cues, and a powder-coated frame, and it measures 101” long x 57” wide x 32” tall. It is made for both indoor and outdoor use. DeWulf also recently launched a line of unique light fixtures made of brass. “I like materials that last and are real. My mission in life is to bring beautiful things into the world,” he says regarding his reason for moving into a new medium. $18,980 at www.jamesdewulf.com.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE A perfect romantic weekend escape

BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

F

ebruary is an ideal time to head north for a romantic snowy getaway. An ideal long weekend escape is South Lake Tahoe, Calif. If you book a room at the new Landing Resort & Spa, you can enjoy fine dining, skiing at Heavenly Mountain, rooms with fireplaces overlooking Lake Tahoe, and an indulgent spa to boot.

About South Lake Tahoe South Lake Tahoe is a mountain town (elevation 6,223 feet above sea level) of about 34,000 on the shores of the majestic Lake Tahoe. The town is at the base of Heavenly Mountain, with 97 ski trails on more than 4,800 acres. The lake itself, which straddles California and Nevada, is North America’s largest alpine lake, stretching for 22 miles. South Lake Tahoe and Heavenly Mountain have activities for everyone, both on and off the mountain. During the winter, there’s skiing, snowmobiling, natural hot springs, hot air balloon rides, helicopter tours, casinos, jazz clubs, shopping and dining. While in Lake Tahoe, you simply must take a scenic lake cruise. Because of the lake’s depth, it beautifully reflects the sky—and the best way to experience the most incredible blue water anywhere is on board Zephyr Cove Marina’s boats. The Tahoe Queen operates a 2.5-hour daily scenic tour and a twice-a-week dinner cruise from the Ski Run Marina in town. The M.S. Dixie II operates daily two-hour scenic and dinner cruises from April through September from the Zephyr Cove Marina, just a few minutes north of town. Pickup is available for both cruises and details are online at www.zephyrcove.com.

The Landing Resort & Spa The Landing Resort & Spa (www.thelandingresort.com) opened in Dec. 2013 and offers the perfect romantic Lake Tahoe stay. The resort, ranked one of the Top 10 Lakeside Hotels in the World by TripAdvisor, is just a few blocks from the Heavenly Mountain Gondola, and overlooks Lake Tahoe. This 88-room luxury boutique hotel is designed for comfort. You can hop on the Mercedes shuttle to the gondola for a day on the slopes (or the shops), but when you return, you’ll want to snuggle up in a plush robe by your very own fireplace as the sun sets over the lake. Rooms include goose down pillows and comforters, a wet bar, a refrigerator, a Keurig coffee maker, an oversized jetted soaking tub, a rain shower, heated marble floors in the bathroom, and even a heated toilet seat. Drinks and Dinner at Jimmy’s Restaurant No visit would be complete without drinks and dinner at Jimmy’s Restaurant at The Landing. The backlit bar has gorgeous onyx walls. You might want to order up a signature Ouzo cocktail while you’re there. The adjacent restaurant serves up wood-fired Greek and regional California cuisine. The menu, developed by celebrity chef Maria Elia, features seafood, seasonal options, and locally sourced ingredients. With the food’s Greek influence (the wood grilled Halloumi is a must-have), you might want to order one of the Greek wines. There are also private dining alcoves with fireplaces, or you can snuggle around one of the fire pits on the patio.

n a society that relies on instant gratification and constantly moving and evolving, every now and then you need to take a break and enjoy a meal that was labored over. An example of such a meal would be any food that is prepared smoked. There is no way to speed up the process of smoking—it is considered to be an art that requires a great deal of skill, but more importantly, patience. When you have had enough of the intense pace of our current culture and you need to step back and take a breath, and take the time to appreciate a meal that took time that you might not have in your life, here are a collection of some of the best smoked dishes at local restaurants.

aroma that envelops you the moment you walk through the doors, and trust us, you’ll immediately start salivating. The hardest decision will be what meat or combination to choose. You can opt for pulled pork, brisket, spiral cut ham, spicy cheddar sausage, traditional polish sausage, pork ribs, turkey breast, or marinated chicken breast. Your side selections are equally as bountiful, and all meals are served with buttery rolls and pickles. You can finish up your meal with complimentary ice cream. Unless you have your heart set on one particular style of meat, the Meat Plate is the way to go so that you can mix and match. Like the old adage says, “Variety is the spice of life.”

8471 E. McDonald Drive, Scottsdale 480.948.4227; www.arizonabbqshack.com When your food is as impactful as it is here, there is no need for a lot of bells and whistles—which is great, because you won’t find any at Arizona BBQ Shack. This small restaurant makes up for its limited square footage with big, bold flavors. The smoked meat selection is pretty much all-encompassing. The Smoked Chicken Wings are whole wings, not the split drummettes that you might be used to, allowing for the seasoning and smoke to invade more real estate, which creates incredible flavor and tenderness. They also claim to have the “most delicious ribs in Scottsdale.” The pre-smoker seasoning allows for a flavor profile that is pure, full-flavored, and the perfect representation of what smoked meats should be. Once the smoking process is completed, the wings are brushed with sauce to enhance the natural flavors. The Shack also offers up generous children’s portions, so you can easily make an outing here a family affair.

ll too often, when one thinks of “rum,” several things come to mind: Captain Morgan poses, Johnny Depp as a drunken Captain Jack Sparrow, and/or Rum and Coke-fueled memories of drinking on the cheap in college. “Believe it or not, the actual stories of Captain Morgan don’t even mention rum, and (sorry, ladies) Captain Jack Sparrow is a 100 percent fictional character,” says Sarah Spear, the “Rum Princesa” at Toro Latin Restaurant & Rum Bar by Richard Sandoval. Because the majority of the world’s rum production occurs—and has historically occurred—in the Caribbean and Latin America, the spirit is often associated with sailors and pirates. But today, rum is also produced in Austria, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Mexico, Hawaii, the Philippines, India, Reunion Island, Mauritius, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, the United States, and Canada. “And while rum can certainly be obtained on the cheap for the local frat party, good rum is a transcendent spirit on its own and a crucial building block to many of the highest-end cocktails worldwide,” says Spear, whose Toro boasts both rum-tasting flights and 111 varietals to choose from (the most in the Valley!). Among the most exclusive is the Appleton 50-Year Rum, which is $250 per ounce. Crafted in 1962 to celebrate Jamaica’s full independence from Britain, barrels were set aside to age with the intention of bottling the rums decades later in celebration of the country’s 50th independence anniversary. Ready to try some of the rums that are redefining the category from across the globe? Our picks include these.

No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique.
