Sunny, warm weather is here and we’re taking full advantage of it. One of the ways Scottsdale residents spend their time in the spring is on the links. Just ask Tania Tare, on the cover of this month’s issue (page 46). The New Zealand native made Scottsdale home just under a year ago and she’s spending her days on the greens. Tania is a professional golfer and trick shot artist. She’s got skills – just check out her Instagram (@taniatare63) to see some of her fun tricks she can do with golf balls and clubs. Gardening is another way to enjoy the outdoors this season. If you dig it (See what we did there?), flip to page 42 to find gadgets to make your garden bloom. It’s not just flowers and grass that are thriving, but trees too – citrus trees to be exact, and chefs all over the Valley are taking notice. Page 26 highlights dishes from local restaurants that are utilizing fresh citrus in their offerings. From the outdoors in, spring is also a time that many people clean and declutter. On page 34, we share tips and tricks for your spring cleaning mission. We’ve also got fitness fallacies (page 20), a recipe for loaded sweet potato fries (guilt-free!) on page 24, and we’re breaking down the five main love languages and how they can help your relationship (page 52). Ultra Processed = Ultra Dangerous Processed foods have not been known to be the healthiest out there, but there is no harm in eating them, right? Wrong. Researchers discovered that people who eat more ultra-processed foods have a higher risk of cancer, as well as increased obesity and weight issues. Such foods are the ones with unrecognizable and unpronounceable words on the list of ingredients. While they may not be harmful to eat from time to time, processed foods add up. Source: www.cnn.com.

Fruits and Veggies are Key Feeling a little down? Science says load up on fruits and veggies. Researchers from the University of Leeds have found that changes in fruit and vegetable consumption are correlated with changes

in mental well-being. The recent study, analyzing data from more than 40,000 people in the UK, showed a positive link between the quantity of fruit and vegetables consumed and people’s self-reported mental well-being. They

specifically indicated that eating just one extra portion of fruits and vegetables a day could have an equivalent effect on mental well-being as around eight extra days of walking a month. Source: www. sciencedaily.com.

Calorie Miscommunication If you live to hit your “burned calorie” goal on your fitness tracker, you may need to rethink your strategy. Popular brands of fitness trackers can overestimate the number of calories burned while walking by more than 50 percent, tests recently found. While the same studies have shown that the calories counted while on the “run” setting, the calorie overestimation was only 4 percent. So, choose your exercises wisely … and maybe don’t rely on trackers as much. Source: www.bbc. com.

Step Away from the Bucket Unfortunate news for fried chicken lovers … A recent study shows that regularly eating fried food is linked with a heightened risk of death from any cause and heart-related death, especially among postmenopausal women. The study found that foods such as fried chicken and fried fish/shellfish were associated with a higher risk of heart-related death, particularly among younger women in the study (aged 50-65 years old), than other foods in the fried variety. Reduce your intake of fried foods and increase your longevity, your heart will thank you. Source: www. sciencedaily.com.

news Get Moving If you’re working a traditional 9-to-5 desk job, chances are you spend most of that time in a seated position. Exercise is needed to keep several body parts working at top speed, including the brain. A new study revealed that even a small amount of exercise can have a significant impact on arguably the most important thing of all: lifespan. Even just 30 minutes of low-intensity exercise is enough to help combat the impact. Source: www. medicalnewstoday.com.

No Social Clues Contrary to recent reports, there may not be a significant link between social media use in teens and depression. Research published in Clinical Psychological Science reports that, according to longitudinal data collected, social media use did not predict later depressive symptoms among adolescents or college undergraduates. Rather, greater depressive symptoms predicted more social media use over time, but only among adolescent girls. Keep an eye on your teens, just in case.

Young Brains

Source: www. sciencedaily.com.

Ah, to be young again. According to a recent study, women tend to have more youthful brains than their male counterparts — at least when it comes to metabolism. While age reduces the metabolism of all brains, women retain a higher rate throughout their lifespan. Recent findings suggest that women may be better equipped to learn and be creative in later life. One caution to look out for: some women’s brains experience a dramatic metabolic decline around menopause, leaving them vulnerable to Alzheimer’s. Source: www.npr.com.

Up in Smoke This is one campaign that’s not going so well. According to a recent report by The American Lung Association, there has not been enough done to keep underage kids away from cigarettes and e-cigarettes. The annual “State of Tobacco Control” report singled out the Food Drug Administration for not taking “decisive action” to stop e-cigarette and tobacco use by teens and adolescents and to remove menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars from the U.S. market. 5 Fitness Fallacies Think you know the latest exercise advice and all the ways physical activity can boost your health? Well, think again. After reading the most recent Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans you might be pleasantly surprised, even relieved. Here are some fitness myths debunked. A 30-minute workout? That’s the least you can do! Actually, short “exercise snacks” – even 5 or 10 minutes of activity at a time – can deliver real health rewards: everything from weight maintenance, more energy and better sleep to improved mood and reduced risk of disease. So quick, bust a move. Use a low stool to stair-step during commercials, dance while dusting, or do counter push-ups while toasting your bread or bicep curls while hauling grocery bags. (And by all means, start walking the greens.) However you break it up, any movement that gets your heart beating a little

faster or makes your muscles work a little harder counts toward your weekly activity goal. And yes, it’s still a minimum of 150 minutes per week of moderateintensity aerobic activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity (or a combination of both). Feel the burn, baby. Yes, when you “feel the burn” during a strengthtraining workout it usually means that you’re fatiguing your muscles to the point where they break down and grow, getting stronger as they work to repair themselves. But that’s not the only – or necessarily the best – way to get stronger. Workouts needn’t be punish-

ing to be effective. The real goal is to create a habit of exercise and movement that you’ll enjoy enough to do consistently so you can see and feel the benefits of a strong and healthy body. Strength training? That’s for body builders! It’s true: Nobody needs glistening, bulging biceps for good health. But strong muscles support our organs, prevent back injuries and power every move we make. They also improve our balance and support good posture – preventing falls and injuries. Resistance training is the key. It strengthens muscles by making them work against a weight or

force. Lift weights, use resistance bands, or even leverage your own body weight. (think push-ups, for example.) Aim for twice-weekly muscle-strengthening sessions that use all major muscle groups.

activity with lower risks of 13 types of cancer, including colon, breast, endometrial, esophageal, liver and kidney cancer as well as myeloid leukemia. Just think, your exercise habit could help prevent cancer!

Only chemo fights cancer. Surprise! Physical activity actually has lifesaving potential. People who remain active throughout their lives may be able to prevent a long list of potentially disabling or fatal diseases, including many types of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes – and even cancer. Researchers at the National Cancer Institutes associated increased physical

Physical therapy? That’s for surgical patients. No need to go under the knife to benefit from physical therapy. Physical therapists help people build muscle strength and move correctly to avoid or recover from a sports injury, disability or weakness, including back pain. In some cases, just learning how to use your muscles properly could help you avoid hip, knee or back surgery.

Fresh Perspective Dishes that squeeze some citrus in

The tangy, sweet and oh-so-fresh fragrance of citrus fruits make them a universal favorite this time of year. Read on to find out where you can find dishes featuring lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits all season long.

The Herb Box Sweet and delicious, the Grapefruit and Sugar Charred Salmon ($25) from The Herb Box is gluten-free and truly unique. Grapefruits are low in calories but are full of nutrients, and an excellent source of vitamins A and C. Served over black quinoa with blackberries, fennel, onions, orange, pistachios, and snow pea shoots, the Herb Box dish almost too pretty to eat. www. theherbbox.com. Boulders Spa Café When the Boulders Resort set out to create an organic garden, the vision grew far beyond a plot of land to harvest veggies. The perimeter walls of the garden are dedicated to a fragrant orchard of citrus trees that include grapefruit, orange, lemon, lime, and a “cocktail” citrus tree. From there, local oranges are combined with watercress, whipped ricotta, spiced pecans, farro, and a balsamic vinaigrette in the Roasted Garden Beets salad ($14). The oranges are also mixed with Napa cabbage, toasted quinoa, carrots, snap peas, peanuts, avocado, crispy wontons, and ginger dressing in the Quinoa Asian Cabbage salad ($16), both available at the Boulders Spa Café. www.theboulders. com. Fresh ahi tuna is served atop jicama slices and arugula then topped with a mango salsa and citrus soy vinaigrette. This grain-free take on a traditional tostada is a great option for those looking to eat clean while visiting Joya Spa at The Omni. www.omnihotels.com. Old Town Tortilla Factory Did someone say tequila? At the Old Town Tortilla Factory, you get your lime and tequila fix without ever ordering a margarita! The Tequila Lime Salad ($10) is packed with fresh field greens, pico de gallo, cherry tomatoes, and lime wedges tossed in a tequila lime dressing made in house daily. Add seasoned chicken for protein and you’ve got a complete meal with

Original ChopShop Using seasonal ingredients like lemons is a quick and easy way to dress up any salad. At The Original ChopShop, the Lemon Dijon Dressing makes an appearance on two of the most popular salads including the Kale + Quinoa salad, ($10) chockfull of kale, quinoa, snap peas, tomato, smoked almonds, corn, golden raisins, and parmesan, and the Kale Cesar ($7), consisting of kale, romaine, tomato, croutons, and parmesan. www.originalchopshop.com Eggstacy Start your day off on the right foot with a punch of grapefruit from Eggstasy. weight loss news / complied by Kelly Potts

A Diet for the Planet You’ve heard that going meatless for one day is good for your health. Well, it turns out that its good for the environment as well. Created by a group of 37 scientists as part of the EATLancet Commission, the planetary diet is designed to prevent the risk of lethal chronic diseases. The planetary health diet is a “flexitarian” diet, which means it’s largely plant based but can also include small amounts of fish, meat and dairy. Meat and dairy use the most natural resources and take the biggest toll on the planet, but the new diet doesn’t completely eliminate either food group.

Healthy Eating Hack It turns out, eating healthy can start with a workout. According to a new study, once those who considered themselves “sedentary” started working out, eating healthier came easy. Scientists found that after exercising for several weeks, formerly sedentary participants were more likely to choose foods like lean meats, fruits and vegetables, while preferences for fried foods, sodas and other unhealthy options decreased. The takeaway: Hit the gym, and the choices will become easier.

Stay Away From the Junk It never fails… you start a new diet and suddenly crave – no, need – your old junk foods. Researchers have identified new brain circuits that may act as a brake on binge eating and junk food craving. Several behavioral studies have demonstrated that denying certain foods, like being on a diet, causes increased craving and motivation for that food. The researchers looked at rats who spent a month eating a low-fat diet and successfully inhibited the fatty food seeking behaviors. While the researchers have found the brain link between fatty foods and the cravings, eventually the rats stopped reaching for the “goal.” Source: www.cnn. com.

Get Out of Your Own Way Sometimes, being Type A may hinder your own weight loss. Type A personalities are known for being punctual, all-in, organized, competitive and rule-following. However, these qualities also mean you can get frustrated with mainstream diets and workout programs when they don’t work. The problem is that weight-loss programs have a one-size-fits-all structure to appeal to the masses. So, for Type As committed to a program and following it diligently but frustrated by failure, it may be the program that’s a failure, not them. The key for “Type A,” as well as everyone else, is to find a weight-loss program that works for you and your lifestyle, not others. Source: www.cnn.com.

THE EFFECTIVE MEDICAL MASSAGE: MYOFASCIAL THERAPY

Dr. Bryan Geier talks a new treatment for pain management Wouldn’t it be great if you could treat the majority of all pain related symptoms with a non-invasive approach? Now, you can. As a Chiropractor, my education and training was focused on relieving pain by influencing the nervous system through the use of spinal manipulation. However, in my practice I intently focus on the myo, which is the Latin term for muscles and connective tissue called fascia. Here in lies the term Myofascial therapy. When treating pain, I chose to focus on the myofascia of the body because this is the most important component to influencing the Central Nervous System to decrease pain, specifically honing in on treating this pain by taking an alternative, non-invasive approach. Unfortunately, myofascial therapy receives little attention as a major source of pain and is seldom taught in modern medical school training. Even more unfortunate is the lack of insurance reimbursement for this important therapy. So, let’s dig into the topic a little deeper.

running through, around and crisscrossing every inch of your body including muscle, organs, blood vessels, nerves, spinal cord, brain and skin. The central nervous system receives its greatest amount of sensory nerves from myofascial tissue. This means that the fascia is as important or more important than muscle in sensory input delivery. The key to this statement is that your myofascia becomes the byproduct of your environment without you even realizing it. It experiences stress, memorizes chronic poor posture, feels the weight of your head sitting at the computer all day, and permanently holds onto old untreated injuries. As a result of never ending signaling to the brain, the body develops symptoms like pain and endocrine dysfunction like adrenal fatigue, dysfunctional mood and brain fog, to name a few. If the fascia controls the information that can influence the brain, then this is the first step to calming down the body’s pain response and also improving overall global body function.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND PAIN AND MYOFASCIA The muscular system is the largest sensory organ. Approximately 50 percent of your body weight is made up of about 400 skeletal muscles. Your fascia is actually one giant interconnected web of connective tissue

WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL THERAPY? It is a deep tissue treatment involving the breakdown of fascial adhesions known as trigger points. These trigger points ultimately create a permanently shortened muscle, resulting in pain and muscle dysfunction and, in turn, weakness and uncoordinated movements. Myofascial therapy can be performed in many ways including by a practitioner’s hands, using tools that break down adhesions and stretching. This therapy proves to be a very efficient and effective therapy for pain management, improving athletic performance and reducing cellulite.

COMMON INJURIES RELATED TO MYOFASCIAL TRIGGER POINTS • Pain or stiffness in your neck, mid- or lowback • Headaches or jaw pain • Sciatica and other nerve related symptoms like numbness and tingling • Tendonitis, Bursitis and Plantar Fasciitis • Joint pain especially in your shoulder, knee or wrist • Generalized dull, achy pain • Athletic performance issues

HOW DOES HEALTHY FASCIA BECOME UNHEALTHY FASCIA? This happens when extra layers of fascia grow due to stress, trauma, repetitive motions, dehydration and inflammation. Inflammation comes from repetitive working out or even eating inflammatory foods such as (but not limited to) sugar, fried food, certain oils and processed wheat.

Score a Stronger Core 4 ab movements for a tight midsection Spring is here and in Scottsdale, that means it’s pool time. The following four movements will hit all areas of the core (front, sides and back) to work on the entire midsection.

Here’s how it looks: 3-4 rounds of each: 20 deadbugs 15 sit ups 10 side plank hip taps (each side) 20-second arch hold

Completing four rounds is the goal but if you are just beginning, start out with three rounds and then work your way up. Try to complete all four movements unbroken, and then take a rest after you have finished the round. This is not for time, you are working for quality on this one.

Movement #1 Deadbugs Start lying down on the floor on your back, holding a weight directly over your shoulders while keeping arms locked out. Knees are going to be stacked over your hips and bent into a 90-degree angle. Feet are going to be flexed, keeping the toes pointing straight up. From there, lower one leg down at time but keep the foot off of the ground. Then, return the foot back to the starting position and switch legs. Keep in mind that the goal is to keep that lower back planted

Movement #4 Arch hold This movement is also known as the superman hold. Roll over onto your belly and bring your arms and legs off of the ground while keeping your head down. Movement #3 Think about squeezSide plank hip ing your whole back taps during this moveMake your way into ment. Hold the pose a side plank (on Movement #2 forearms). Raise your for 20 seconds. Spring Cleaning Simplified Start the season by decluttering your space

It’s the time of year again to start thinking about spring cleaning, which means some severe decluttering, reorganizing, scrubbing and polishing. Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that a good deep clean is a worthwhile exercise. Did you know that cleaning and decluttering your space has many important benefits for your health and well-being? When there is too much clutter in the home, it has the effect of distracting us and can create chronic restlessness. Too much disorder in the house can increase stress levels that can cause anxiety and depression. These unwanted

34

feelings are easily preventable by getting rid of unnecessary items and allows you to enjoy a tidier, more organized environment. By simplifying your pace and belongings around you, you can focus better and improve your productivity at work and home. Our hectic on-the-go schedules don’t always allow us to have time to clean messy surfaces as well as we would like. Spring cleaning encourages people to tackle these projects. One is to dust and disinfect areas which help to reduce allergies and sickness. If you’re prone to allergies, when spring rolls through, this is a must because pollen isn’t the only culprit.

New Spring Eyewear Designs

30+ Years of Providing

Thorough Eyecare • Finest Eyewear • Superior Service Where to Start Looking at a cluttered room and trying to decide where to start can be daunting. The best way to tackle it is in stages – to focus on one room, one space, or even one area within a room, completing the job fully before moving on to the next. Be realistic. If it’s getting to be too much, take a break. Begin with sorting items into categories. If you are tackling clothes first, take all the garments out of every closet and drawer in the room first. Start with tops, then bottoms and work from there. A helpful tip to speed up the decluttering process is to turn the hangers of all your clothes backwards when you put them back in the closet. As you wear pieces of clothing, turn the hangers back around. When you go to declutter your closet again, you can immediately see which articles of clothing you have not worn in the six months or past year and you can donate or sell them. When you’ve tackled all of your “hot spots,” be sure to throw out the trash pile immediately, put the donate pile in your car, and neatly store the sell pile in the garage to get them out of sight.

How to Decide When deciding what to keep and what to let go of, ask these three questions – Do I truly need it? Do I absolutely love it? Does this bring me happiness? These answers can help curb your pack rat impulses, allowing you to clear out and move on. By answering these questions, you’re left with only clothes and possessions that bring happiness into your life. Keep in mind that items are not equivalent to memories of the person who gave them to you, but pruning objects with an emotional attachment can be difficult. Carefully consider if you truly need the belonging, if you can’t part with it then keep it in organized storage on a trial basis. Decluttering doesn’t mean getting rid of everything you own, but ratherC it involves taking the time to distinguish M what’s working for Y you, what isn’t and why you’re hanging CM on to stuff. Above all, remember thatMY decluttering your CY home won’t happen overnight. Recruit CMY a trusted friend or a K professional company to help sort and sell unwanted items.

Body SOS 5 signs you have a nutrient deficiency

The body is always trying to communicate how it’s feeling and send a notification when things become out of balance. It’s a feedback mechanism that says, “Hey! Things are going south and I need a little TLC.” These usually come in the form of unwanted symptoms and it’s a way to let the person know that a shift needs to occur, and that something is missing within the body and needs to be tended to. This may manifest in different things for different bodies, and it’s a sure sign the body is crying for help.

36

ScottsdaleHealth

03/19

Symptoms of a Nutrient Deficiency Most symptoms of a deficiency in vitamins and minerals come in mild forms, but if ignored for too long can develop into something more serious. It’s best to evaluate and make sure that if experiencing the following signs and symptoms, action should be taken. Some of the most common deficiencies may be some things that have been realized for years and looked upon as a normal sign of aging. Here are some common areas that both men and women may be experiencing which should be further investigated.

Brittle or dry hair, skin and nails This could be a symptom of a slow functioning thyroid hormone, not getting enough healthy fats

in your diet or could mean that your body is in need of omega3 fatty acids. Tingling in the hands or feet This could be a

symptom of vitamin B deficiency (for vegans this is very important to supplement with), low folate (B6) and B12, or low vitamin D3. It can also be from anxiety and hormonal imbalances or slow circulation of blood. Cracks in the corner of the mouth, tingling tongue and general dryness of the body This could be a symptom of an iron deficiency, a B12 deficiency, a vitamin C deficiency, a riboflavin deficiency, or a zinc deficiency. It could also be a sign that you are not getting enough protein in your diet (high-quality protein like wild caught fish and organic meats).

Unexplainable fatigue Though iron deficiency is most likely the culprit of this symptom, do not supplement with iron unless checking your levels with a doctor first. It could also mean you have a folate deficiency or vitamin D deficiency. Being low on iodine is another reason you could be tired – you can get this from kelp and table salt though sea salt is recommended. Lastly, not eating enough calories, especially fats which regulate your hormones, could be the cause of your fatigue feeling. Muscle cramps It’s possible that you may have a magnesium deficiency (found in foods like spinach, kale and

almonds) if you are experiencing muscle cramps. Taking in too much calcium in your diet can also cause this as it creates an imbalance, or not eating enough potassium (coconut oil and bananas) can also be a cause. Lastly, excessive workouts (too much sweating, not enough replenishing) can be the culplrit. What to Do Next If after reading these a light bulb went off that some of these may in fact be occurring, the best plan of action is to begin taking a highquality multivitamin supplement. Most of the time, doing this alone can address any bothersome symptoms that may be occurring inside or outside of the body.

For others, seeking advice from a naturopathic doctor who is able to test for deficiencies is the next course of action as this can be a more in-depth answer to what needs to be addressed and added in. Eating nutritiously is very important, but most of the time it’s not enough to fuel and nourish the body properly. Always use intuition as the best and first form of asking if something is amiss, and then take action from there. The body is powerful and always wants to come back to homeostasis. Listen to its queues and signals whenever possible to ensure living a joyful and highest quality of life.

Tuna Tower

Recipe provided by BLK Live, www.blkliveaz.com INGREDIENTS Rice layer 4 ounces white rice 1 teaspoon rice vinegar Avocado layer ½ avocado Touch of lemon juice Manco Pico layer ½ mango, diced ¼ red bell pepper (de-seeded, or leave seeds for an extra kick), diced ¼ red onion, diced Salt and pepper to taste Touch of lemon juice

Seaweed Salad layer 10 nori (seaweed) sheets 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 teaspoon rice vinegar Ahi Tuna layer 4 ounces fresh ahi tuna 2 teaspoons sriracha 1 teaspoon ketchup

Wanton chips 8-10 egg roll wrappers Oil for frying Toppings Toasted black and white sesame seeds Pickled ginger Wasabi

INSTRUCTIONS Start with a tall ring mold (about 5-6 inches high). First, combine the white rice with a teaspoon of rice vinegar and drop that into your ring mold. Pack the rice down gently with the bottom of a squeeze bottle or spoon. Take the ½ avocado and toss in a touch of lemon juice to reduce oxidizing (browning). Add to ring mold on top of the bed of sushi rice, and pack down gently with the bottom of a squeeze bottle or spoon. Next, combine all mango pico ingredients and place mixture on top of the sushi rice and avocado and gently pack down. To make seaweed salad: Soak sheets of nori (seaweed) in water overnight. Remove from water, julienne cut into thin strips. Toss strips of soaked seaweed in a teaspoon of sesame oil. Add teaspoon of rice vinegar and stir seaweed well. Pack mixture down gently on top of the pico. For the top layer, toss ahi tuna in sweet and spicy sauce (stir sriracha and ketchup together to make). Pack down gently atop the seaweed salad. Can substitute sweet and spicy sauce with soy sauce. With your packing tool, firmly apply pressure to the top of the tuna tower and with your other hand, slowly pull the ring mold up. Semi-firm pressure downward, pull ring mold upward. Top tuna tower with sesame seeds and pickled ginger. On the side, serve a bit of wasabi, extra sweet and spicy sauce, and fried wanton chips. To make wanton chips: Purchase store-bought egg roll wrappers. Cut wrappers into squares, then cut squares into triangles. Carefully drop wrapper triangles into hot oil and fry in batches (350 degrees, about 15 seconds per side).

March is National Peanut Month, but not everyone is celebrating. If you’re allergic to peanuts, you’re not alone. According to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, more than 3 million people in America report having an allergy to peanuts, tree nuts, or both. Beyond skipping PB&Js for lunch and roasted peanuts at the next spring training game, here are some facts to keep in mind if you’re allergic to peanuts.

Crazy Facts About Peanut Allergies 44

ScottsdaleHealth

1. On the rise. Acording to a survey published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 2010, rates of peanut allergies in children more than tripled between 1997 and 2008.

5. Stay off the grass. It may be surprising to hear that some landscaping products, such as composting materials, contain peanut hulls. Check with the gardening shop before buying anything.

2. Life-threatening. Peanut allergy attacks cause more eadly anaphylaxis than any other food allergy. This means you’ll experience trouble breathing, a drop in blood pressure, and shock.

6. Smaller than you think. Though it’s increasingly in the national discourse, less than 1 percent of Americans have a peanut allergy.

3. Read the labels. While many items, such as candy bars and cookies, are straightforward about their contents of peanuts, items like cereals, salad dressings and cake icing can also contain traces. 4. When I grow up. Many people have peanut allergies for life, but research shows about 20 percent of children outgrow them.

7. Oh, baby. Guidelines from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases recommend that parents introduce infantappropriate peanut foods starting as early as 4-6 months. 8. How does it work? The major proteins Ara h1, Ara h2, and Ara h3 are the allergens in peanuts, which is what people are actually allergic to.

I think she could be right.” John replied enthusiastically, “Well done! My wife is a brilliant businesswoman! You’ve just made my day. Now I know I can handle the bad news. Around 1999, a Nike commercial featuring one of the most successful golfers of all time, Tiger Woods, aired on TVs around the world. In it, Woods juggled a golf ball with a wedge — a golf club typically used for short-distance shooting — for nearly 30 seconds. He increased and decreased the ball’s momentum all while getting fancy with his club, moving it behind his back and between his legs. The commercial ends with him hitting the ball out of midair down the greens. Big deal, right? In truth, this particular ad was paramount for the sport. Not only did it reveal just how advanced Woods’ hand-eye coordination was, but it also unmasked a unique and fun side to golf. Tania Tare was 12 when she saw this commercial for the first time and it was what motivated her to become the professional golfer and trick shot artist she is today.

An Active Upbringing Auckland, New Zealand is this professional golfer’s homebase. Since she hails from a big family — five brothers and five sisters to be exact — Tare’s childhood home was always buzzing with excitement. Sure, it got chaotic at times but was never void of fun. “My siblings and I are actually all very close,” Tare says. “I’m honestly so thankful I’ve had them throughout everything.” Before golf, there was everything else. Tare’s “sport” of choice was just being active. She tried her hand at basketball, softball, volleyball — all of them. Tennis stuck in a way that the others didn’t and that’s partly because her biggest role model, her mother, was exceptional at the sport. Tare was convinced she’d grow up to become a professional tennis player. “A lot of my favorite memories, aside from spending time with my other family members, was playing tennis on the weekend with my mum. I grew up very close to her, so spending time with her and playing a sport I loved felt like the best of both worlds for me,” she explains. By 12, Tare had successfully pulled off her first golf trick shot. And yes, it was the exact trick shot completed by Woods in the now-20-year-old commercial. After that, she walked away from the sport, focusing on tennis. Two years later, and by her late father’s suggestion, Tare picked up her clubs and gave golf a real shot. She played throughout high school and at the collegiate level at Florida International University in Miami, where she graduated with a degree in marketing. “When I moved to Miami for college, that was my first time outside of New Zealand. Everything was so different — the temperature, the surroundings, the food. I experienced complete culture shock,” Tare recalls. “However, I managed to adapt, adjust and learn, which, looking back on it now, is a beautiful thing.”

A Work in Progress Tare immediately began her career as a professional golfer after completing school in 2013. Despite sustaining a few wrist

injuries over the years, she’s remained persistent in achieving her goal to play on the Ladies of Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour. Taking one day a time until her dream becomes a reality, Tare often refers to herself as a work in progress pro golfer. She moved to Scottsdale 10 months ago and is under the watchful eye of her coach Jorge Parada. Tare meets with a trainer at Premier Fitness Systems — a Scottsdale-based training facility that offers a golf performance program — three to five times a week, with one to two sessions of one-on-one training. Food is another story for this athlete. Tare’s insanely fast metabolism makes it nearly impossible for her to keep weight on, which isn’t ideal for someone performing at her level. Instead of worrying about what’s she eating — though she’s a big believer in everything in proportion — her focus is on eating larger amounts in order to get the nutrients her body needs. Since moving here, Troon North Golf Club has become her home club. Regardless of where she is playing, though, this Kiwi golfer has discovered a newfound appreciation for desert golf. “I love how isolated desert golf is. You’re just out in the world — it’s so quiet, peaceful and beautiful. You’re truly in the present,” she says.

Mad Trick Shot Skills Ever since mimicking Tiger Woods’ trick shot performance, Tare has substantially grown her trick shot portfolio. And no offense to Woods, but she has severely upped the ante. She juggles the ball while switching clubs mid-trick. She utilizes other parks of her body, like her thighs and feet, kicking around the ball as if it were a hacky sack before sending it down the range. She even found a way to incorporate Solo cups (think flip cup, just with a club and golf ball) to really make things interesting. She makes the most outrageously impossible golf tricks possible, which is why she’s amassed more than 140,000 followers on Instagram (@taniatare63 for videos!). Her followers can’t wait to see what other tricks she has up her sleeve. “The whole reason I started incorporating tricks was to break the stereotype that golf is a boring sport. I wanted to get people excited about it and it’s worked so far,” she explains. “Ultimately, what I want my followers to take away from my posts is that life should be fun. Find what makes you happy – for me, it’s golf – and just do it. Regardless of what the norm is and what people think, just do what you love.” Despite all the buzz she’s created online from her mindblowing content, Tare will happily tell you that she’s a professional golfer first and a trick shot artist second. “In regards to the game, I love it. I’m addicted to the challenge and I love the social ability of golf. Even on my days off, I enjoy playing and practicing. My heart is in it 100 percent.” To learn more about Tare, visit www.taniatare.com.

Heather Vines-Bright is helping women build self-confidence with her new company, Bright Life!

/ by Gabby Leighton / photo by James Patrick

Heather Vines-Bright has been helping others in some way or another for most of her life. She’s done so through her career in human resources, her image consulting business, with online fitness training, and now she is combining her longtime passion for health, fitness and assisting people build their selfconfidence with her new business, Bright Life!

Competitive Spirit

Vines-Bright’s story begins in a dance studio at age 6. Though she didn’t know it at the time, her days spent practicing gymnastics and dancing layed the groundwork for some of the most pivotal moments in her life. Vines-Bright grew up dancing ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance, and joined her high school dance company in her sophomore year. After high school, Vines-Bright landed in human resources. Her family friend in the field approached her with an opportunity to assist with processing applications. He hired her and she’s never looked back. She even received her PHR – professional certification in human resources “I have had the opportunity to work in almost every facet of HR, including employee relations, learning and development, talent management, benefits and compensation. I love that I get to make an impact on people’s lives,” she says. Something about professional cheerleading piqued VinesBright’s interest. At 19, she auditioned for the San Francisco 49ers Gold Rush Cheerleaders but she didn’t make the cut. “About six years later I moved to Arizona and wanted to get involved in dance again as well as meet people but I was scared of auditioning for the Arizona Cardinals. All of those fears from being cut from the Gold Rush scarred me, but my goals were bigger than my fears so I tried out and made the team.” Vines-Bright cheered for the Arizona Cardinals from 20002005, attending the Pro Bowl and serving as a captain for her third, fourth and fifth year on the team. Though she shined bright on the field, Vines-Bright was dealing with dark insecurities when the music stopped. “I was benched my rookie year because of my weight and was not allowed to cheer in any of the pre-season games until I lost weight. It was extremely disheartening and because of it, I suffered body image issues.” This brought her longtime struggle with insecurities and self-confidence to the surface. “When I was in third grade, I experienced being bullied and it occurred again in middle school. I was an extremely shy person and also looked different because of my ethnicity (half Japanese, half Caucasian). I had a hard time fitting in with the predominantly white population at my school and I was teased and harassed,” she says. Vines-Bright’s time on the squad was a growing experience, one that would later inspire her to help other women. “I learned how humbling it is to fail, how amazing it feels

to come back from failure and that beauty is more than skin deep,” she says. “I can’t say I have completely overcome these struggles but I have definitely come a long way. Through selfreflection, changing my mindset, serving others and living my passion, I began to overcome my insecurities.”

Fitness Focus

Vines-Bright’s love for fitness first stemmed from her husband, who is a personal trainer. “I never really knew how to work out. My version of working out was running on the treadmill for an hour,” she says. “My husband took me to see one of his clients in a fitness competition and I thought to myself, ‘I’m 35 years old and I’m not getting any younger.’ At that point, I made the commitment to myself that I was going to get in the best shape of my life and that was the start of my journey.” And what better way to get in the best shape of her life than facing her fears of being in a bikini on stage in front of hundreds of people? After training for 15 weeks, Vines-Bright competed and placed first in her class in her first competition. “I competed for two more years, ended up placing nationally in the top five and started fitness modeling. I also started a business called Imprint. My business partner and I offer fitness outfit rentals, hair and makeup services and wardrobe styling for photoshoots.” Vines-Bright stopped competing after having back surgery from a herniated disc in 2015, and became a certified fitness trainer in 2017, offering online programs.

Shining Bright

Vines-Bright recently launched her new company, Bright Life! The program provides women with the tools they need to overcome their self-limiting beliefs and insecurities with workshops, online courses and videos, and one-on-one coaching in the areas of self-confidence, finding purpose, leadership development, fitness, women’s health and more. “Ever since I can remember I have wanted to be a part of something bigger. Fear held me back and the low self-confidence I had in myself prevented me from ever taking real action toward a sustained idea,” Vines-Bright says. “Once I became vulnerable with myself and started sharing how my life experiences have impacted me, I realized that everything I have been through has led me to this point in my life where I am able to help other women overcome their insecurities and inner critic.” The skills Vines-Bright learned throughout her careers led her to this point to help women. Her best piece of advice to those struggling to feel comfortable in their own skin? “Identify your self-limiting beliefs and realize that these are limitations you are putting on yourself,” she says. “Nobody is making you feel this way but you.” For more information, visit www.livebrightlife.com.

The Language of Love Decoding the five styles of romantic communication

As the popular saying goes, we accept the love we think we deserve. But what if you and your partner knew the exact kind of love you needed? When we give all of ourselves to someone, we hope it’s reciprocated. But love varies person-to-person and even relationship-to-relationship. First, it is important to understand your own love style, then you must be able to share it with your partner. It isn’t universally known that there are different ways to love someone and that every person may give and receive it differently. According to Dr. Gary Chapman, the author of The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts, each person has a primary love language that reaches deeper than all the others. The five distinct languages are: words of affirmation, acts of service, quality time, physical touch and receiving gifts. Understanding the way you give and receive love to and from your partner can strengthen your connection and romance.

Words of Affirmation For someone with this style of love, words mean more than any action could. Expressing feelings through compliments and appreciation is the key to their heart. Words like “I am thankful that…” and “I love how you…” will go a long way. Positive and loving thoughts will help this individual feel fulfilled. While these words might not come naturally to some, being conscious of statements and practicing small affirmations will lead you in the right direc-

tion. Keep in mind that these words can also be shared through handwritten notes, cards and text messages. Acts of Service Doing something for your significant other, like taking out the garbage, cooking dinner or completing a task on their to-do list will satisfy this type of lover. Acting out of love rather than obligation will show them they are valued. Helping your significant other throughout a project, or starting and finishing it on your own without asking for acknowledge-

ment are examples of this style. Finding unique services or taking care of things your partner does not enjoy can speak volumes. Quality Time Be there, really be there. Make your partner feel cherished by spending time together with no distractions. Undivided attention and uninterrupted quality time will deepen your connection, communication and love. This type of lover wants to feel like you’re being intentional by setting time aside just for them. Put your phone down,

listen and talk — be in the moment. This can be especially difficult if you have kids, but the time alone is crucial. Commit time before the kids wake up or after the kids fall asleep, or plan a date activity that enhances connection. Physical Touch To put it short and simple, this person likes the touchy-feely kind of love. Sharing feelings through thoughtful and purposeful touch shows these individuals that they are desired, safe and loved. Holding hands, tender kisses, back rubs and even a simple hug commu-

nicates a closeness that no other language can. This powerful love language demonstrates an intimacy throughout everyday life, times of need and special moments. Receiving Gifts This isn’t about highdollar items, rather the thought and effort behind the gift or gesture. A little “I got this for you because it reminded me of you,” is the idea behind the way this person loves. Frequent gestures will show care and value. Celebrating big moments like birthdays and anni-

versaries through presents is also vital. The gift is a visual representation of how you feel about this person. A strong relationship may mean adjusting the way you love your partner to fit their needs and desires. Healthy relationships don’t just appear, they may require a lot of work, but the reward is what makes it worth it. If you’re not sure what your love language is, visit www.5lovelanguages. com to take the official assessment and receive a love language profile.

Sleeping Beauty Six ways to maximize anti-aging overnight We’re all getting older. It’s inevitable. When it comes to looking younger and preventing signs of aging, we’re generally prescribed a skincare regime of various lotions, potions and serums. What if one of the biggest secrets to achieving better, more youthful skin was as simple as getting more zzz’s? Sleep is the time when your body repairs itself. The skin’s blood flow increases, the epidermis rebuilds its collagen and

repairs damage from UV exposure, reduces wrinkles and diminishes age spots. While you shouldn’t completely disregard your daytime skin care routine, there are several ways to adjust your bedtime regimen to promote anti-aging and look younger in the a.m. With National Sleep Awareness Week taking place March 3-10, this is great time to discuss additional ways to have your skin look more youthful.

Following are six tips to fight signs of aging overnight so you can rise and shine with glowing skin Get a full night of sleep. The best place to start for more youthful skin is to get the recommended amount of rest each night, seven to nine hours. Wash your face. Going to bed with a face full of makeup can harm the appearance of your skin. Cleansing your face each night is more important than in the

morning. Leaving your makeup on overnight can cause large pores, dry skin, breakouts and inflammation. However, use a gentle cleanser that does not strip your face of the necessary oils and enzymes. Also, do not overly stretch the thin skin around the eyes. Consider sleep position. Do you wake

up looking puffy? That’s because lying down for a long period of time with your cheeks squished in a pillow causes fluid to pool in the face. Sleeping with your head elevated on your back can prevent these problems. It’s recommended to have an inclination of 20-30 degrees from the hips to the head. The swelling that happens at night

from your face being at heart level stretches the tissues and causes aged appearance over time. Use silk sheets The benefits of sleeping on silk sheets and pillows are abundant. The smooth texture prevents your facial skin from creasing and eliminates sleep wrinkles. It can also help keep hair from frizzing and reduces

the loss of natural oils and moisture in the body. Utilize a humidifier: Dry skin intensifies the look of wrinkles. Apply moisturizer each night, have a glass of water next to your bed and use humidifiers to raise moisture levels in your bedroom. Pay attention to yout mattress:

Consider investing in a high-quality mattress that offers you top-notch sleep. These days there are a variety of fancy mattresses for sale that adjust positions, track your quality of sleep and more. This goes along with your sleep position as you can incline the mattress to keep your face from swelling at night.

doctor’s orders

Drs. Cristina RomeroBosch and John A. Robinson have treated thousands of patients with their comprehensive approach to hormone replacement therapy and hormone pellet therapy for a combined 25+ years. This power couple has created their unique brand, The Sex Docs, as they provide Sexual Wellness solutions for couples at their Scottsdale medical practice, The Hormone Zone. Explore more at hormone-zone.com.

The Wide Wide World of Hormone Pellets It’s a jungle out there. A Hormone Jungle. In the heart of it all are some good answers to balance your hormones and optimize your health and your entire life. Hormones are responsible for keeping you optimized and functioning at your very best. When we get older, or run down, hormones lower and so does our mood, energy, libido, and just about everything else. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can provide answers to our health problems that many of us never dreamed possible. Natural forms of hormone therapy, called “bioidentical” hormones, that mimic the same shape and function of your own hormones, provide a type of Hormone Replacement Therapy (or BHRT) that has a long track record of safety and effectiveness. But take that BHRT and put it in the form of a hormone pellet, and it can be something very special for the patient, effectively and conveniently delivering hormone gradually over several months. There are many doctors who are offering hormone pellets in the Valley, and specifically in Scottsdale. Many patients are choosing this type of hormone replacement therapy. Finding a doctor to give you pellets is easy. But finding the right medical practice with the doctors who really understand the finer points

58

ScottsdaleHealth

03/19

of the therapy is not so easy. Many practices operate as a “pellet mill.” You have minimal time with the doctor, they quickly put the pellets in you, and out the door you go, with minimal discussion. For some, it works. For many, many others, it does not. The missing element to the therapy is the lack of providing a comprehensive approach to all of your hormones, while providing you the time you need and deserve to properly consult. What about your thyroid gland and its hormones? What about your adrenals and stress hormones? How about your insulin and blood sugar? Or even human growth hormone? If this is not being done, you are missing out on how effective it all can really be for you, and how addressing those other hormones make your hormone pellets work even better. It can be complicated, taking a medical practice that is trained in addressing the whole system. If you are thinking about hormone pellet therapy or are currently receiving hormone pellets and believe you could feel better, ensure you use a medical practice with the experience, willingness, and ability to treat you comprehensively, so you get the most out of your hormone pellet therapy and your health.
