MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Mount Horeb Recreation Department is to provide a wide variety of recreational and leisure opportunities to enhance the quality of life for all Mount Horeb residents while promoting positive physical, social and emotional experiences.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RECREATION DEPARTMENT Our 2018 summer and fall activity guide is exploding with a wide variety of programs and activities for all ages to enjoy! Check out some of our new programs we have added: WERQ, Adult Hip Hop Dance, Adult Ultimate Frisbee, Chess Wizards, Ninja Training and Youth Art Classes. We will once again be bringing back our FREE Movie in the Park nights at Grundahl Park, so check out page 25 for more information on these family-friendly events. In today’s hectic world, it is easy to forget that taking time to enjoy each day is so important to our health and well-being. We encourage every resident to experience our recreational activities and park facilities that enhance the quality of life by helping us stay healthy and fit and develop a sense of community. Registration is being accepted now either online, by mail, drop box, or in person.

Financial assistance applications are available at the Recreation Department.

2) Payment must accompany your registration form. You can write your credit card information on the form or include cash or check. Make checks payable to the Village of Mount Horeb. Credit cards (VISA, MASTERCARD, AMERICAN EXPRESS) are accepted at the Recreation Department. 3) Send to or drop off at the Mount Horeb Recreation Department, 222 E. Front St., Mount Horeb, WI 53572. A drop box is located outside the front door for your convenience.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT We welcome all individuals and families from our community to use our parks and recreation programs regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin, age, or disability. Those individuals with special needs are encouraged to notify us at least two weeks in advance to help us accommodate your request.

ON-SITE REGISTRATIONS Instructors will NOT be allowed to accept registrations or payments at class locations. All registration transactions must be completed at the Recreation Department office or online prior to class start date.

RESIDENT/NON-RESIDENT A resident is anyone who resides within the Mount Horeb Village limits. All others are considered non-residents, and will be charged an additional $10.00 to the resident rate. This charge is assessed per person per program. This additional non-resident fee helps with staffing costs and equipment expenses for our programs.

WEATHER CANCELLATIONS If you are wondering if a class or program is canceled due to weather, you can call our cancellation line at 437-3400 ext. 9.

REGISTRATION DEADLINES/LATE FEES A $5.00 late fee will be added to your payment if received after the registration deadline dates listed. Please plan ahead.

REFUND POLICY A refund will be issued when a program is canceled by the Recreation Department. Cancellations made five working days or more prior to the scheduled start date of an activity will have a $2.00 surcharge. Refunds or credits will not be issued if you cancel out of an activity less than five working days from the program start date. A credit (minus a $2.00 surcharge plus fees for classes already attended) will be issued in the case of illness or injury. Credits can be used for any recreation program in the future. Please note that online convenience fees are non-refundable.

CONFIRMATION OF ENROLLMENT Once registered, plan on attending at the listed dates and times. Please feel free to call (608) 437-3400 to verify your registration and/or ask any questions. The Mount Horeb Recreation Department is taking applications for summer kids camp coordinator, kids camp assistant, lifeguards, and pool admissions/concessions staff. If interested, please contact the Recreation Department for an application. Applicants must be 15 years of age for kids camp assistant and pool admission/concessions staff, 16 years of age for lifeguarding and 18 years of age for kids camp coordinator.

NON-SUFFICIENT FUNDS POLICY A $20.00 service charge will be assessed on all checks returned due to Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF). Once an NSF check occurs, all future registrations must be paid by cash or money order.

TEAM PHOTOS Team or individual photos are an option for cheerleading, t-ball, coach pitch, soccer and flag football. If you choose not to purchase photos, please have your child attend the photo shoot for those who would like to purchase a team photo. Pictures will be sent directly to your home.

PUBLICITY The Mount Horeb Recreation Department reserves the right to utilize photos and names of participants for publicity purposes. Participants not wanting their names and/or photo used, must notify the Recreation Department in writing at the time of registration.

PROGRAM CANCELLATIONS Programs may be canceled if minimum registrations are not met or facility issues occur. You will be notified before the start date if an activity is canceled.

Magician Nickey Fynn will put on a short magic performance full of thrill and excitement. Students will then have the opportunity to learn four easy to learn tricks that were part of the performance. Each participant will receive a magic bag which contains four actual magic tricks, a printed sheet of 12 more tricks, funny shaped rubber bands, temporary tattoos, and a coloring sheet. If time allows, Nickey will make balloon animals for each participant. At the end of the class, each magician-in-training will receive their very own magic class completion certificate. Each pair will be painting their own potted daisies working together. The pair will be sharing a 16 x 20 canvas working together to create one beautiful painting that they will both cherish. Throughout the painting, we will be talking about primary, secondary and complimentary colors along with bold, colorful graphics. These paintings turn out colorful and whimsical and are so much fun to do! It is our policy that any child 8 years of age or younger must be with an adult or teenage babysitter at all times. Parents, not the pool staff, are responsible for their children regardless of the child’s age. Staff on duty are trained lifeguards and will do their best to provide a safe environment.

POOL CAPACITY & FACILITY CAPACITY The Mount Horeb Family Aquatic Center has a pool capacity of 337. The facility capacity will be set at 400 patrons in the fenced in pool area at one time. Once we reach capacity, we will not allow anyone else into the facility. If you need to leave the facility for any reason, while we are at capacity, you will need to get back in line (your wristband will not be removed). The next person waiting in line will be allowed in. LAP SWIM The pool staff will place a lane line in from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM every day of the week, except on Sunday, which is Family Night, and during special events. Lap swim is FREE to pass holders; otherwise, a $2.00 fee is required. Must be 16 or older to participate in lap swim.

MOUNT HOREB SWIMMING LESSONS Classes are held Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday for 25-30 minutes each (Whales will last 50-55 minutes). Swim lesson start times are 11:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM. August evening session start times are 6:15 PM and 6:45 PM. Specific times for each level can be viewed on our online registration website (https://activenet.active.com/mhrd) or you can stop in to the Recreation Department or call us at (608) 437-3400.

PRESCHOOL 2 (3 - 4 YEARS)

In case of inclement weather, call (608) 437-3400, and listen for the prompt to hear cancellations. Swimming lesson classes will not be made up unless more than two classes per session are cancelled. On-line registration is available for swim lessons. Please review the levels to place your child in the correct class.

LEVEL ONE – MINNOWS (COMFORT IN WATER)

You may register on-line for swim lessons or you can register at the Recreation Department between 7:15 AM–4:30 PM Monday-Thursday and 7:00 AM–12:00 PM on Friday. Full payment is required to guarantee placement. NO PHONE-IN REGISTRATIONS ACCEPTED. SWIM LESSON POLICY: If we do not have at least three participants in a particular class, we will cancel that class. If this occurs, we will call you to see if you can switch to another time slot or session. If you are not able to switch, you will receive a full refund. Thank you for your cooperation.

Purpose: Instruction given on elementary water skills including water safety, going under water, front/back float, blowing bubbles, kicking skills and an introduction to the front/back crawl. Prerequisite: must be 4 years old at the start of lessons Students will: blow bubbles through mouth and nose 3 sec., bob at least 3 times, open eyes underwater and retrieve objects, practice water entry and exit, learn front/back glide (with support), perform back and front float for 5 seconds independently, roll from front to back and back to front (with support), tread water in chest-deep water, learn basic arm/ leg movements associated with the front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke (with support), and learn about water safety.

LEVEL TWO – TADPOLES (SUPPORTED SWIMMING) Prerequisite: Level One - Minnows certificate (or similar certificate from another swim lesson program)

Session #2: July 9 – July 19

Students will: fully submerge and hold breath 5 sec., bob in chest-deep water 5 times, demonstrate a front/back glide for 10 feet independently, swim front crawl for 15 feet independently, swim back crawl for 10 feet independently, swim elementary backstroke and learn about water safety. https://www.meridianpool.com/swim-lessons

SWIMMING LESSON LEVELS PRESCHOOL 1 (2½ - 4 YEARS) Purpose: Designed for children who have little experience in the water or in a class setting. Emphasis is on water orientation and adjustment. Age appropriate instruction will be given on basic water skills that develop coordination and confidence in the water through songs, games and activities.

Students will: learn the basics of rotary breathing and display this ability with their front crawl for 25ft, swim elementary backstroke and back crawl for 25ft (independently), retrieve objects from 5ft of water, swim across the shallow end of the pool with proficiency in the front and back crawl strokes, learn about water safety.

LEVEL FOUR – SHARKS (INDEPENDENT PROGRESSION) Prerequisite: Level Three - Piranhas certificate (or similar certificate from another swim lesson program) Students will: master rotary breathing and swim a distance of 15 yds exhibiting this ability, master back stroke for a distance of 15yds, be introduced to the breast stroke, tread water with hands and feet for 1 minute, learn sidestroke for a distance of 15yds, learn how to dive, retrieve an object from 6 feet depth, learn about water safety.

LEVEL FIVE – WHALES (ADVANCED SWIMMING) Prerequisite: Level Four - Sharks certificate (or similar certificate from another swim lesson program) Students will: master the breast stroke and be able to swim 25yds, be introduced to the butterfly, dive and then swim 25yds of each stroke; front crawl, back crawl, back stroke, elementary back stroke, side stroke and breast stroke, learn how to perform an open turn, tread water with scissor kick, whip kick and rotary kick and be able to do so for 2 min, learn important survival floats and learn about water safety.

There is a calendar at the bottom of this page to click on a date and the available shelters will show up for you. You can also call the Recreation Department to check availability at 437-3400 x1. 2. COMPLETE FORM/PAYMENT: Stop in at the Recreation Department (or can print a form from our website) to complete a reservation form and make payment.
