Heyyyy… so remember that 2020-21 school year?

You know, the time during coronavirus? Well, even calling it a school year sounds like a stretch; it was more like a… well it definitely felt like a fever dream to many of us. Looking on the bright side, at least you could say this year was memorable. In twenty years or so you could be telling your kids about your high school experience during a time of masks, and vaccines, and crazy schedules. But, that’s not the only takeaway of this year. In fact, this whole year we have been hearing COVID this… COVID that... but frankly, we are getting quite sick of it. For that reason, this magazine is looking past all the struggles of this year and giving the seniors their moment to shine. It is obvious that the graduating seniors had their high school experience broken in many ways. With no prom, no rallies, and no football games, all we can do is try to make the best of the situation and push forward. As things are starting to return normal around campus, seniors are beginning their transitions out of high school and on to their future. Our goal as a Publications staff was to document these seniors’ journeys, and give the students who aren’t regularly covered a chance to tell their stories.

JENNA JOHNSON

[20 years from now what do you want “future you” to know about your life right now?] NOW, “I would probably say being with my friends. I normally don’t have that close of relationships with them but we have definitely gotten a lot closer over this past year. I do miss hanging out like we did before COVID, though.”

[What is the next step for you after graduation?] NEXT, “My next step after we all graduate is going to be attending Sierra College for the next two years. Then after that I will be transferring to a four year school.

CAMILLE STRAUB

[20 years from now what do you want “future you” to know about your life right now?] NOW, “I would say hanging out with my friends in high school. We always go to Folsom Lake at sunset to hang out and went to all the football games in the past years before COVID, along with going to school dances and just getting ready for dances all together. Just being able to be all together and making super fun and interesting memories.”

[What is the next step for you after graduation?]

NEXT, “After I graduate I am going to Sierra College for two years and am moving out into an apartment with my friend in Roseville. Then I am transferring to Long Beach State for the last two or three years of my college experience.”

GIAVANNA COLLA

[20 years from now what do you want “future you” to know about your life right now?]

NOW, “Something that I would have to say is that I graduated in general. I don’t know, but I’ve gotten into dog whelping which is really cool and also learning how to read people better.”

[What is the next step for you after graduation?]

NEXT, “My next step after graduation is attending Sierra College. I’m also planning on getting into vet stuff so I can better my dog whelping.

CIERRA MORRIS

[20 years from now what do you want “future you” to know about your life right now?]

NOW, “In 20 years I want future me to know that I am excited to turn18 and go off to college knowing that I have worked very hard to do well and get into a good school. Along with hanging out with friends during high school.

[What is the next step for you after graduation?] NEXT, “My next step is after I graduate is going to The University of Arizona where I will be studying neuroscience on a pre-med route. I am very excited to be in Tucson!”

SIDES OF OUR seniors

Andrew Hoerman chooses to focus on the positives of his senior year and the opportunities it has given him. Andrew explains he has really enjoyed his senior year and doesn’t want to leave, ”I am tired of people saying it’s all gonna be over soon and talking about senioritis and how much they want it to be over when I don’t really have senioritis. I honestly kind of want to stay because this whole year has felt off.” For Andrew, his senior year was different but also gave him chances to try new things and meet new people. He explained, “Everyone’s been acting like it’s been a terrible year but it’s not just that. I wish people tried harder to enjoy it. Because I got all of my credits done early, I only had to take two classes which has been cool. I also have met a lot of new people this year and I want to remember these people long into the future.”

Andrew has a very bright future ahead of him and plans on going far in life. He explains that he, “does snowboarding perfessionally so I am planning on going to the Olympics or X Games sometime in the future.” So next time you are sitting in front of your TV watching the Winter Olympics snowboarding event, keep an eye out for Andrew Hoerman. From what he explains, we might have a future Olympian emerging from Rocklin.

Justin was very honest about how he felt living in California during the pandemic and that he strongly looks forward to a future of living in new places other than where he is currently residing. Justin expressed these views by emphasizing, “20 years from now I want myself to know that I should’ve gotten out of California sooner.” Justin is on to new sights and locations now that he will no longer be confined by California. He looks forward to travelling and although he wasn’t clear on where he would be moving, he has his sight set on exciting places. He explains, “After graduation I will be moving as fast as possible.”

Nayana explains “this year was a difficult one and the challenges I faced this year made me stronger. I want to remember that I am strong enough to face a storm and that I will be okay in the end.” She will look back at these years with fond memories, “racing against DO during cross country, the whole RHS girls team got lost on the course and went the wrong way. We ended up at the finish line somehow.”

Nayana has big plans, “I am going to San Diego State to earn my bachelors in nursing while taking my pre-medical classes so I can either become a nurse or physician.”

Cameron is ready to get out into the world and witness more advanced humor than he has during his days at Rocklin High School. He is leaving behind his days filled with jokes that are not funny and looks forward to a positive change in the jokes department. He explained, “As a senior I am tired of hearing unfunny jokes.” He furthered this by explaining if he could do anything differently during his time in high school it would be to have more humour in his life. Cameron followed that by saying, “I wish I heard more funny jokes.” Parking is always a struggle in the morning so many seniors opt to join a raffle in hopes of winning a parking spot. Luckily, Cameron was successful and was able to spend time painting with his family. He even went as far to say that, “As a senior my favorite memory was painting my parking space. In 20 years from now, I want future me to remember the one time I was with my friend and he said ‘let’s go over to that rock’ and I said ‘ok.’ so we went over to the rock. I had fun,” said Cameron. Cameron, like many of us, plans to get very rich in the future and make lots of meny. He said, “after graduation my next step is becoming a quadrillionaire.”

jassidel corrales arana

Jassidel plans to continue her education in hopes to someday become a nurse. She explains what brought her to this decision and the goals of her career by explaining, “My plans for my future concerning college and career are that I plan on going to Sierra College for two years and transferring to UC Irvine to further my education on how to be a pediatric nurse. I chose this career path because I love working with younger kids and to helping them would make me really happy. I am currently working in a Mexican restaurant here in Rocklin which has been helpful in giving experience working with and serving people.” High school is a great experience but can also be limiting on certain allowed freedoms or restrictions one an individuals life and choices.

Jassidel is very excited to get out of high school to have new experiences, “When I am out of highschool I look forward to having a little more freedom because I won’t have to worry about so much school work and having to wake up super early to get to school on time. I still won’t be able to do so much since I’ll still be 17 until November but I will enjoy my summer before Sierra starts. Once I graduate, I look forward to the senior trip since it’ll be the first time I go to Universal Studios and I know it’ll be exciting for me and every senior that is attending.” With the cancellation of many events, it’s finding joy in the little things that makes life so special. That is exactly what Jassidel did stating that, ”memories that I made that were the most memorable to this year were that I was able to do a senior sunrise with my friend in a park. We watched the sunrise and we went to eat breakfast at a diner. Another memory I made was that I was able to paint my parking spot with an image of my favorite movie, which was super fun for me since I was able to have my dad help me paint it. I also dyed some of my hair with my friend and sister before we came back to school so it was cool coming back with a little change.” These actions done by Jassidel will be fond memories for her to look back on for years to come. “One thing I want future me to remember is how much my class ‘perservered’ throughout a global pandemic and kept doing their best even when we were all tired of having class through Zoom calls.”

THE SIDES OF OUR stories sherlyne vargas sanchez jenna angellar

“My life now is very good. I spend it happily with my family and friends. I have not yet got a job because I am focusing on my studies, after I graduate I will look for one. My hobbies include watching movies with my family, playing video games with my friends, dancing, and exercising.”

“My plan after graduation is to look for a job and continue studying. I will attend Sierra College and I plan to study as a pediatric nurse or hair stylist. When I finish my studies at Sierra College, I want to transfer to University of the Pacific, Stockton California. The jobs that I want in the future are the careers that I want to study, but after I graduate I still don’t know where I would like to work. Some careers that interest me after graduation are clothing stores, or working in a factory where they pack food. I want to be successful in my studies and have a good job, but at the same time I want it to not be too stressful for me.”

“Right now I am preparing for my future. I know this is my last chance to relax before I go out working hard. I love to cook and I am practicing to get better and better each time. I also love hanging out with my friends and family and having experiences together.”

“After graduation, I am going to get a job and enjoy my summer with my friends before they leave. I am going to attend Sierra College and will be focusing on nursing along with psychology. I have not exactly decided which I will major in. I can see myself loving being a nurse or a psychologist or a therapist. I am still narrowing down my options so I will explore both my first year of school. After graduation I want to enjoy each day as much as I can before everything changes. I want to work hard everyday to achieve my dreams and I am starting now.“

justin deveza

“I am having a relaxed senior year. I spend much less time in school now, which lets me zero in on my few classes and do better in them, opposed to juggling eight classes at once while being in school for six hours. I have AP Microeconomics with Mr. Hardy and English IV with Mr. Pereira. I am also taking statistics at Sierra College for dual enrollment credits. Of all of the classes I’m taking this year, I’d say that AP Microeconomics is the most difficult, although I really like that class. We have fun review games that incorporate the material we are learning in them and a lot of the review games involve sports. Today we had a basketball review game and for the previous review unit we had a mini golf tournament. The pandemic really shut down senior year. Us seniors really missed out on the high school experiences all other generaions of high schoolers will get. Of those experiences, prom and senior ball would be the biggest. I am okay with missing out on those events if it means other people will be safe. I love running, skateboarding around with my friends, and playing the piano.”

“I plan on attending California Baptist University next year as a pre-nursing student. I also plan on coming out of college as a nurse. I plan on getting my CNA license this summer, so I could hopefully spend sometime in a hospital setting. A CNA license is a license to be a certified nursing assistant. You have to take a course to get it, usually at a community college. I really want my CNA license because I want to gain experience working in a hospital, and I know that I’d be able to learn so much there. I’m not getting it for the pay because CNA’s make minumum wage, I’ll mostly just be there for the experience. I have high hopes for college in the fall. I’m excited to be able to stay in a dorm and go to college classes. I’m optimistic about college and I am ready for a more ‘normal’ school experience.”

hunter forsyth

“My life is certainly very different from what it was like one year ago. I’m a senior now, and so much has changed in my life. I only have one class that actually gives me homework (AP Government) and I can leave school at lunch, so I have so much more freetime. To spend some of that time, I got a job at Quarry Park. I mostly help harness people up and make sure that the little kids in the Kids Kove are being safe and wearing their masks. The weekends for me are actually less relaxing, due to the fact I have to work an eight hour shift. I also got my first serious girlfriend this year, we hang out before school and now during lunch since we are back onto the full schedule. My hobbies are the same as they have been, I’m a gamer. I have gotten more politcally active and radicalized over the summer. In my boredome I also created a YouTube channel and have taken up hobbies such as creating small booklets with politcal songs for my position to distribute. I have always wanted to start a YouTube channel ever since I was very young and figured out what YouTube was. I wanted to play games on YouTube, I even made a strange habit of talking as I play games even though there was no one listening to me. I would explain my thought process and explain the game’s mechanics to an imaginary audience. I had an idea to focus on gaming and occasionally take deeper dives into real issues. I am very proud of my humble youtube channel, Lefty Leftist, of seven subscribers.”

“When I graduate highschool, I’m going to go to Sierra College for a couple of years and then I’ll transfer to a four year college, probably UC Santa Cruz. I’m not too sure what I’ll major in, but I am interested in History, Creative Writing and Political Science. If there is a degree for broadcasting or something that covers making videos for platforms such as Youtube, I might minor in that. I dont know what job I want after college, but I always thought that being a history professor could be cool. I’ve also always wanted to write books and stories, so being an author or a storywriter for video games would be nice as well. Whatever I decide to do, I want to be politcally active with my work. Whatever the future holds for me, I’ll take it. Hopefully it doesn’t suck.”

“My life right now is pretty chaotic, but very similar to other seniors at this time. Right now I am deciding where I want to go to college and registering for everything that goes along with that. I have to figure out my plants for the end of high school, such as graduation and different events and activites. Outside of school I have a job. I work at Walmart as a stocker. I mainly work early mornings, weekends, and I occasionally work weekends. Recently I have let go of some of my hobbies because I found I had less time for them and COVID did restrict some of the hobbies I liked doing. I used to play soccer on a team, but there wasn’t much of a season due to the pandemic. For school, I used to do marching band, but since the season got pushed back to spring I do not have enough time to participate with everything else going on. I don’t find myself getting into any new hobbies, but I do keep myself busy with different things. Everyday life for me is simple, I don’t have too many irregularities that happen throughout my day, so for the most part it is the same.”

“After graduation, I plan on attending a four-year university as a sociology major. Right now I am looking at the University of Nevada, Reno, Oregon State, and other state schools in California. I am also hoping to get off of the waitlist for a couple of the UC’s. For sociology, I think I want to go into more research during college, but for a career, I might look at something more in social work or even medical. I would hope to get many opportunities after graduation and to retain and make new personal relationships. I loved the relationships I made in high school.”

“I have made connections with so many people in and out of my grade that have contributed to my high school experience.”

KYLIE JORAMO Now

“I think I will miss some aspects of high school, like meeting new people and seeing my friends every day but I’m more excited for the future and the new people I’m going to meet in college. One of my favorite memories was when I got thrown into sports media instead of photo and I don’t know a lot about sports. It ended up being one of my favorite classes because of the people in it and I got to experience being on the sidelines of most sporting events because I had to take pictures.”

Next

“I am attending Paul Michell to become an esthetician, then later attending a 4 year and medical school to become a dermatologist!”

RYLIE REESE

Now

As of now Rylie says, “I think I am just going to look back at my times here with friends and little moments like seeing the teachers and the whole class laughing at a students joke, and I will also miss going to school at 11:30 of course.”

Next

Rylie says for her future, she is planning on going to, “A private school in the Bay Area where I got an academic scholarship. I am going to be studying business psychology. I am very excited to go and I hope college will be a nice change.”

EMMA HAMMES Now

One of my favorite memories from this year was going back in person and being able to see people again. The part of high school that i’m gonna miss the most is the amount of memories I have made there. Moving on from high school has been and is still scary. It feels like you have to grow up so quickly. Graduating early was one of the best decisions I made. I like to be independent and I wanted to get a head start in my future the second I had the chance.

Next

“For my future, I knew the 4 year college route just wasn’t for me at this moment. I wanted something I could start right away and not have to go through a ton more schooling. After graduating early in January, I enrolled in Paul Mitchell- the school in Sacramento for the esthetics program. I have been in the program since March and will have my esthetician license by the end of July. This path was the best option for me because I can get started on my career right away, which is what I wanted.”

IT ALL STARTS NOW IT ALL STARTS NOW

MARCUS POMPA

NOW

“My favorite part of high school was all of the events that come with it like the rallies, the dances, and sports. I really like the teachers at Rocklin High School. I have had a lot of good teachers that have shaped me into the young man I am.”

NEXT

“I am going to the University of Washington to study science. I then plan on going to graduate school after or getting my masters.”

LONDON BAILEY

NOW

London has had “many goof, funny memories from this year”, but her favorite part of high school was, ‘“Probably the socializing part and all the football games and dances. I’m sad that I didn’t get to have that this past year. It feels so weird that I am about to graduate, I feel like I was just a little freshman yesterday. I also am so excited to be done with highschool and go on to college.”

NEXT

“I am looking forward to September when I will be attending BYU, Idaho. I have decided to major in interior design. I am really into decorating and design and just being creative. I am also looking forward to all the freedom I will have and for all of the exciting experiments I will get to have in college. Another thing I am very excited for is being able to room with my best friend, Elise Sherlock, which will be a lot of fun.”

JOSHUA LUCHO

Kurtis Bishop

NOW: “I think I’ll be proud of accomplishing that I am now on my way out of high school. I struggled with keeping up with grades, but with help from teachers and other students, I was able to push myself to keep going. And though I’m taking night school right now, I think it will push myself forward, then I’ll be able to graduate.”

NEXT: “Next step will be going to Sierra College, hopefully getting my associates degree in music.”

Kainoa Rees

NOW: “I’m surrounded by the people I really enjoy being around and I’m doing the thing I really enjoy to do.”

NEXT: “After graduation, I’m going to Long Beach, the one in California, and I’m hoping to go into music composition and I’m hopefully going to write scores, like a composition for movies.”

Michael Watson

NOW: “I’m proud to get to where I am now as a senior. I didn’t think I would make it this far.

I thought I would have gone to Victory High School. I’m just proud to be at this grade level.”

NEXT: “I’m joining the United States Marine Corps. I signed up for four years of active duty, four years in the reserves, but if I like it, I’ll stay in for longer.”

Grant Wells NOW: “Just looking back and not regretting anything and being proud of what I’ve done. Just looking back and not really thinking that there was much I could have done better.”

NEXT: “After graduation, I am going to be attending the University of Utah, in Salt Lake City, and I’m going to be studying marketing over there.”

MICHAEL WATSON

NOW:

“I work seven days a week. Four days I teach gymnastics, another four days I work at Taco Bell. For Fridays, I work at both Taco Bell and doing gymnastics. I don’t regret working so much because I enjoy it and it’s going to help in the future and in the long run, having some money and saving up before going to college.”

NEXT: “I’m studying at Sierra College for two years to get my associates degree and transfer to a UC. I have a plan. The biggest reason I work so much is because I am saving up money to get a down payment on a small condo, rent it to somebody else, use the money to pay off the condo, so I can eventually own it myself and slowly repeat this plan over and over again, to help build wealth.”

NOW:

So, twenty years from now, I would say the things I will miss most would be hanging out with friends and going for late night drives to Dutch Bros. I’m also going to miss playing tennis with Alexa as my doubles partner, and having classes with people who I’ve known for a while and have long lasting relationships with. Alexa and I would always grab energy drinks or rebels before a match and chug them, so I think I’ll miss driving to tennis matches together and having our before match traditions. I think the thing I’d like to remember most about high school is the people I’ve met, and what each person has taught me. Because, even with people who I don’t know well, they still manage to impact me in different ways and teach me something. NEXT: After graduation, I’m going to work all summer, and hang out with my friends as much as possible, before I go off to San Diego State University in the fall. I’m undecided as of right now, but I am interested in Psychology with an emphasis in industrial organizational psychology. I’m excited for the college experience, because I can’t wait to meet new people, and I know people going down to San Diego, so I’m looking forward to meeting up with them and hearing about their own college experiences. I might be planning on rushing, but I’m not entirely sure yet. I did get into the Weber Honors College, which is a Residential Learning Community. It’s a bunch of close knit students, and I feel like that’s going to be really beneficial for me, because I’m gonna make a lot of connections.

As for clubs, I haven’t really looked into too many yet but I’m sure they have great campus life. I have never skateboarded or surfed in my life, but I might take up those hobbies since I will be in San Diego. I’ve researched a little bit about the fun classes they have, the recreational classes. Some I’ve looked into are surfing classes, wakeboarding classes, and a bunch of other water sports. The classes sound like a great way to stay active while earning a few credits.

KAILANA LU

become a patent attorney or I’m going to be a deputy district attorney. But it all really depends, I’m gonna try and get an internship at the FBI, probably my sophomore through junior year. I’m thinking about maybe just doing patent law, because that already is a 6 figure starting income, but it’s a tough decision because you have to get your doctorate degree. Whatever happens, I’m excited for my next steps in life!

EMILY MCKEEL

NOW: Something that will make my future self smile is that I’m happy, and I’m doing what I want to do. What makes me happy right now is being with my friends, and that I’m going to major in something that I really want to do. I think that will make me really happy in the future, to know that I’m on the right path to the life I’ve always wanted. I’m not gonna be volunteering at my church anymore, or seeing the people that I’ve been seeing every week for years when I leave for college. I will definitely miss that and having that community, but it is something that has made me happy. NEXT: After graduation, I’m going to attend San Diego State University and major in liberal studies because I want to become an elementary school teacher. I’m planning on getting there and trying out a bunch of different clubs, and seeing which ones I like, then continuing with those ones. I’m not planning on working my freshman year during school, but I want to work full time during the summer and save up. I’m really looking forward to meeting a bunch of new people and seeing what college life is like

ASHLYN MARTIN

NOW: Recently, I’ve been working out a ton, trying to get myself better. I’m working to stay fit and stay healthy. I’m on track to graduate, and get out of Rocklin. I had a huge party with my friends last weekend, which was pretty fun, just all the boys hanging out. It was pretty cool, we also went down to the American River and went cliff jumping, which was super fun. I really enjoy hanging out with all my friends, I’m really gonna miss it, so we’re taking advantage of the time we have left together right now. NEXT: So after graduation, I’m moving up to Idaho to go to college up there, and then I have a place set up for me there and a job. I’m going to a community college up there, and the job is with a wireless company where I would be doing community service as well as earning up to $75,000 to $80,000 right off the bat. I’m going to make sure and save a lot, and I also want to invest in a few stocks, and maybe open my own business in the future.

TYLER ROBERSON

NOW: I hope that twenty years from now my future self knows that right now I am extremely at peace. I have committed to Cal Poly, and I just have so many exciting things, amazing things ahead of me. I’m just so excited for all of the opportunities. So, right now seventeen year old Angela is just full of hope and excitement, and I honestly can’t wait for my future. Because right now it’s just like a blank canvas, and I’m just so excited to see where I end up. NEXT: As I mentioned before, I’m going to Cal Poly SLO, where I’m going to major in journalism. I definitely want to keep my interest in journalism, I’m hoping to write for their school newspaper. But really I’m just excited to get into college classes and see what the real world is like. I’m thinking about minoring in graphic design, but I also have an interest in politics, so maybe I could minor in that. Either way I’m gonna major in journalism, and I am just super excited because it’s what I’ve always wanted to do.

ANGELA PASSALACQUA

Polina Pudova

Now:

If I’m not at school, the only other place you can find me currently is at work. For the past two years I’ve been managing and running a restaurant. And this year I’ve been putting all of my free time and efforts towards that, in hopes of getting enough experience to open my own.

Next:

After graduating, I’m planning on attending Sierra College and spending the rest of my time to gain enough knowledge and experience to grow in the restaurant business and open up more places. I’m choosing to stay here because I want to keep my current job so I can have the guidance to work on my own place. However, that was never the plan. My plan has always been to attend a law school and become an immigration lawyer but after I got my job I realized how much I love doing this.

In 20 years from now, I would want to remember what I learned from the people at my schools. The course material and classes will fade from my memory eventully, but my mindset and perpective has been partly shaped by the people around me. I recently moved to Rocklin from a small town in Colorado, so my perceptions have changed immensley. I was able to leave things behind me and try to grow from there. In 20 years, I want to look back and see the positivity rather than the negativity in my life. Even though I am scaed of the uncertainties, I am excited to start the next chapter of my life. My next step is going to college. I got accepted into UCLA for astrophysics and I am looking forward to pursuing this path. I want to go into research in my future, but I don’t have a designated dream job yet. I am hoping to go with the flow and find my passion while in college. Even though I will miss my friends and family, I can’t wait to meet knew people. I also hope to study abroad. I have always loved to travel and I am fascinated by different architecture and cultures around the world.

Twenty years from now I would want to remember high school as a transition period. I came to high school as a scared, insecure freshman and over the years learned to accept and embrace myself for all I am. The confidence I have gained these last four years allow me to reach out to new people and try new things. This was a learning time of finding myself and learning to accept myself and others.

Now: Now:

My plans for the future include going to Sierra for the first two years. I decided not to apply to universities for my mental health and financial reasons. I plan to transfer to UC Irvine and get a BA in criminology, law, and society. Afterwards I plan on becoming a police officer and working to reform the system by educating others in the ways of how society affects crime.

Now:

This year was super busy, but I knew I was having fun. I was able to dance as an activity, as my passion, but then I was also doing it to make money teaching dance. That was something really amazing this year. We have been having to follow COVID guidelines, but it is great to be in the studio with the kids, seeing them be transformed.

Next:

After high school, I am going to Sierra for two years for nursing and then I am going to transfer and finish my nursing degree. Dance is definitely something that throughout college I want to keep teaching but kind of as a side job. I had surgery when I was little and I got to see the amazing work that nurses can do and how they can help people feel better through such a hard time in their lives when they are going through surgery or just really sick. Being able to be there, comfort people, and give them good quality care is just something that I really want to be able to do for people. I am so beyond nervous, but I am also so beyond ready for it.

Now:

My life as I am finishing up my senior year of highschool, is looking great. I am spending quality time with my family, finalizing some work for college, and hanging out with friends as much as possible. I am working hard to finish out the semester strong, and making the best out of every moment I have left at Rocklin High School. Twenty years from now I´d want to look back at my life and remember all the amazing teachers that have impacted me, as well as all my friends that I have grown with throughout my highschool experience. I´d also want to remember the memories of Friday Night Lights, the competition and hype of rallies, and all the activities that make Rocklin High School a blast.

Next:

After highschool I will be attending Liberty University and majoring in Psychology. I am excited and looking forward to what the future holds for me. My plan is to work hard and pursue my goals to achieve greatness! I am so pumped to journey into my next chapter of life!

adao wrestles with her college decision: UOP or Saint Marys

NOW - I continue to make the most of all the bad situations that have happened during my senior year. A lot of senior year was cut short due to COVID-19 and many of our events have been canceled.

NEXT - In the Fall of 2021, I plan on attending a four year university with business being my intended major to study in. Although I am unsure whether I will be attending Saint Mary’s College or The University of the Pacific, I am beyond excited to get started! As I move on and attend university, I plan to stay as involved as I can. I am currently planning out my class schedules as well as plan to get a job and get involved in other school programs. Some of the things that I am interested in getting involved in are things like university student government, Greek life, and much more! Although I am unsure at the moment of what the future will look like for me, I cannot wait to get started on the next chapter of my life!

NOW- I want to remember how hard I’ve worked because it’s going to take a lot of work to get to where I want to be. I also want him [Riddle’s future self] to remember how hard I worked to get where I’ll be in 20 years and how many sleepless nights and dedication it took to get where I’ll be.

NEXT- I want to be a firefighter and I want to go to Yuba College to study fire science. My dad made me want to be a firefighter because he is one. He’s not really with me a whole lot but being a firefighter seems like a cool career.

NOW- I want my future self to know that life is too short to be stuck in an unhappy mindset. Do things that will make you happy. Do explore the world. Travel with loved ones. Overall, don’t dwell on things that you will forget about or be unimportant in the next few years. It only makes you unhappy in general.

NEXT- After graduation, I am going to continue my education at Boise State getting my bachelors degree in health sciences. Then proceed to nursing school where I will get my registered nursing degree. I would love to travel this summer before college but with COVID-19 I am not sure how much of a reality it will truly be but that is the plan about now. The plan is to go to the Bahamas for my boyfriend’s best friend’s birthday. We all love to travel and I’m good friends with his girlfriend so it would be a great trip with some good people.

NOW- I would want my future self to know that I work hard at school and in life, and I hope that I’m still putting in the same effort 20 years from now. Right now, I’m putting the most effort into keeping my grades up. I’m also putting effort into my job as a courtesy clerk at Safeway where I have worked for around a year and a half now.

NEXT- I’m going to graduate and go to Sierra College once I graduate and I’m still deciding but I am thinking about becoming either an english or history high school teacher.

NOW- I want my future self to know that life right now might be the craziest it’ll ever be, but everything is going to work out.

NEXT- My next step is to move in with my best friend and start my journey in real estate. The craziest thing in my life right now is how busy I’ve been able to stay despite the pandemic; being able to assistant coach a 10u softball team, working as a barista, picking up new hobbies, it feels like life is starting to get back to normal. As for my new hobbies, I started to get back into skating after lockdown hit. I originally started skating because my best friend showed me how to do a pop shove-it in middle school and I’ve loved it ever since. I started doing nails on the side as well. It’s so cool to be able to make money while doing something fun.

The atmosphere here on campus is something that I definitely don’t want to forget. Before COVID hit, we had rallies and other events where overall, it was a great place to be. Yelling in the gym at the rallies and supporting our class is something special that a lot of high schools don’t do. For me, all of the smaller sports on campus mean something special to me too. There’s a lot of team spirit in those teams, and I think it’s really important to remember those times. Two years ago in tennis, we won section finals, which we had never done before. That was really special that we were the first Rocklin Boy’s Tennis team to win that section championship. I didn’t get a prom. I didn’t get a ball, so tough luck on that. But I feel that there’s been plenty of moments with my friends that I’ll hopefully never forget.

I plan on going to San Diego State University. I’m planning on currently there I have a few different options.

not really into a lot of other defintely appeals to me.

NOW

In twenty years, I’d like to think back and remember all the fun times I’ve had in my extra-curriculars. I’ve spent years playing in bands throughout Rocklin High and I’ve really enjoyed all my time in all of them, especially my time in the marching band. Performing at all of the football games, traveling for performances, all of our trips and all the different memories I’ve made. A specific memory that speaks to me is the first time I played tenor drums at pep band. I got to also play them the next year, so it really spoke to me. On tenor drums there’s the song “Jig 2” that everyone in the crowds seems to love, so getting to play that in front of the crowd is something very exciting to me.

After I graduate, I’m planning on pursuing a degree in engineering, most likely petroleum engineering. I’m currently debating between going to UNR (University of Nevada-Reno) or University of Idaho for the first two years of college. After that I want to go to Montana Tech in Butte, Montana and continue studying petroleum engineering. I’m really persuing petroleum engineering because I feel that it’s a resource that we’re always going to need. Even if we’re not using it for direct energy, we’re going to use it for tires, plastics and tupperware etc. so I just thought it was going to be an interesting field. I won’t be in the best places in the world doing this, but it’s something that I seem to enjoy.

NOW

20 years from now, I really want to remember the friendships and goofy interactions I had with everyone while I was here on campus. I really think that those type of memories are the most important kind you can have while growing up. Of course grades in school are important, but to me I really think that remembering all of the good times and memories that you make are even more important. For me it’s just being able to keep a healthy lifestyle first.

NEXT

My next step after graduation will be going off to college, like most kids. Right now I’m hoping to major in computer engineering. I still haven’t committed anywhere, but I hope that I can succeed anywhere I choose to go. The thing about computer engineering for me is obviously that I like computers. While programming is not for me, I feel that I’m good at it and will enjoy what I do.

NOW

Something that I know I’ll never forget from high school is COVID. It was really difficult with always switching school schedules. From online to hybrid to AM/PM to normal, it was a lot. I want to look back and think how crazy that was. It’s definitely a once in a lifetime thing that happened that I want to remember how crazy it made the whole world. When quarantine first happened, I really wanted to focus on myself and make sure everything in my life was good. So I started to work out with all my friends. We would go to each other’s houses and work out. If COVID and quarantine didn’t happen then I don’t think I would be the person I am right now.

NEXT

After high school I plan on going to Sierra College and just want to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life. I really want to figure out what fits my life and see what I’m truly passionate about. Without a doubt something that makes me happy and I won’t not want to work. I honestly don’t have a certain idea on the exact path for me, so this is why I want to take some time to figure that out. However, I’m leaning toward something with computers just since I know I can rely on them.

NOW

I was on the soccer team for four years so I will always want to remember all of the athletics. I had a lot of fun playing with all of my teammates on the soccer team so it’s something special to me. There’s no specific memory I made but overall just the games, practices and everything we’ve done as a team we’ve is awesome to me. I’ve played for all four years at Rocklin so definitely a lot of memories. I’m obviously on Varsity now but I played on the freshman team, JV for two years and now we’re here on Varsity. Just getting to spend time with my teammates and being able to get better collectively as a team is cool to me.

NEXT

I’ll probably go to a four year college. I’m thinking about pursuing a master’s degree in engineering. But I’ll see where the world takes me from there. Right now I’m looking at UC Santa Cruz because I have a lot of friends and family that used to go there. So I would have plenty of connections going through UC Santa Cruz. Being able to create something and being able to design it, imagine it and create it all for yourself is really cool.

NOW

What I want to remember is basically just the environment of the people. One thing is that rallies definitely. I used to not like the rallies freshman year but then I really got into them around my junior year. In my junior year I went to a couple of rallies and thought they were honestly really fun. Unfortanely for me we never had any rallies after junior year but those last few rallies really had an impact on me that I will definitely remember about the school. Outside of school just hanging out with friends was cool. There’s plenty of people who I normally wouldn’t see so it’s great being able to see them all when at school full time.

NEXT

I’m going to go straight so Sierra College because i think that it’s the best option. I really want to be a park ranger. I want to help people and the environment. Poachers are basically the number one thing that makes me mad. It’s plain and simple you shouldn’t be killing animals. I’ve always been into the environment so doing my part is important. It needs to be preserved and it’s our job to preserve it. It’s up to us and it’s not fair for other people to destroy it.

NOW

Well looking back, we’re obviously the COVID generation. So for the senior class we went through this year really without a senior year. But I don’t see it as a bad thing because twenty or thirty years down the line we can look back at COVID and think how it’s not here anymore. Without COVID I’m sure I would’ve had a lot more memories. Well obviously we didn’t really have a junior prom or any rallies. We missed a lot but I wouldn’t trade it. Also because of COVID I met a lot of new people that I likely wouldn’t have met to begin with. I got to spend a lot more time with people that I wouldn’t normally do. Overall I just met more people because of it.

NEXT

I plan to go to Sierra College for two years and then transfer transfer over to Sac State after that. I really want to study psychology. I took Mr. Sturgeon’s AP Psych class and I really fell in love with psychology. It’s really the only class I feel that I really cared about on campus. I just want to help out other people and this seems like a great way to do it. I didn’t know how to go about it. I was thinking possibly about the police force but I feel like therapy is a great way to help people.

A STRONG AND CAPABLE SENIOR, JULIE IS READY TO TAKE ON PHAMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY AT U.C. DAVIS

I would want future me to know that 18 year old Julie is 98% confident that she’ll end up where she needs to be and that, although the start was rocky, she couldn’t have asked for another high school experience. My plan as of right now is to study Pharmaceutical Chemistry at UC Davis starting this fall after spending the summer traveling. I have very low standards for enjoyment so I’ll probably be having fun doing literally most things that aren’t related to academics but because of that I probably enjoyed being able to meet a lot of new people the most [at Rocklin]. I feel like I learned that I’m not gonna get along with every person I meet and there are gonna be a lot of people that I won’t be able to tolerate, let alone be their friend. And as someone who used to be a big people pleaser, this single fact took a long time for me to grasp on to. Never be awake for more than 30 hours straight even if you think you’re doing it to fix your sleep schedule, it won’t. I hopefully will not bring my sleep habits to college right now, nor my study habits because I could possibly end up six feet under or fail out of school. I’m both excited and anxious [for college]. I feel like if I succeed in making it my own I’ll be able to have an amazing college experience, but at the same time I’m worried that there’s a small chance I won’t be able to fit in as well as I hoped I would. My friends keep assuring me that I’m gonna be fine since they know my personality, but a small part of me is always just a tad bit skeptical and trying to look out for myself. Especially since I’m going to a school with more than 10 times the amount of students than Rocklin.

jayla castro

Everyone has that childhood dream that they will always remember, maybe to grow up and become a doctor, firefighter, or veterinarian. Most of the time, however, these dreams change and all they amount to are bittersweet memories. Well that is not the case for Jayla Castro. Jayla was accepted to UCLA for softball, and UCLA has been her number one school since she was just six years old. Her uncle is a professor there and used to take her with him to classes, “I would sit in his lecture halls with my mom and I always just felt at home there.” Ever since she first set foot onto the field at a softball camp she claims “I knew exactly what I wanted to do and what I was shooting for, so the second they asked me to come to the school I immediately said yes.” The whole recruiting process may seem really simple, but Jayla assures that “hard work beats everything, you can live your whole life with this God given talent but if you don’t continue to learn and build that strength, you are not pushing yourself enough. You have to go everyday putting in the work because it will pay off.” She has been working as hard as possible since day one of knowing she wanted to go to UCLA, whether it meant going to softball camps, canceling plans, or making big sacrifices. “I knew it was going to be really challenging to put myself out there academically, but if I could do it athletically that would be the best way for me so I started looking into their softball camps, where the coach will see you

and watch how you interact and play on the field, and evaluate your skills” After this, Jayla was pulled aside and asked why she wanted to attend UCLA and what her major would be. “My major is psychology they are a really big psych school, and I was really interested in getting into that program. When they asked me if it was a school I’d prefer to go to, I told them UCLA had been my number one for a very long time.” As soon as they heard this they sent her home to think about the offer and the next day she accepted. What’s next for Jayla is set; majoring in psychology and minoring in criminal justice before she’ll be moving into basic training for the airforce to be a behavior analyst for her five year plan. “I think it’s so crazy that we know more about space than the human mind, so I’ve been interested in psychology since the eighth grade.” Excited for this new setting and experience, Jayla says that her main goal moving forward is not necessarily to live by routine, “Routines can be good but you can get into that autopilot sort of brain and you can stop taking in the little things like going on a walk, saying hi to your family, or spending time with your friends. Sometimes your path or mission in life becomes so important that you start losing the track of right now and the things that make you happy. I want to live by enjoying the little things because there is not a lot of time that you’re going to be able to go to school and hangout with friends, you have to prioritize your youth and make yourself happy.”
