Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test (HOBET)

• The student has submitted placement scores from another college or university to the Transfer Office and, based on specific scores, has received approval to waive the placement assessment requirement in one or more areas.

If a student intends to major in Dental Hygiene, Emergency Medical Services, Medical Assisting, Radiographic Imaging, Respiratory Care, Occupational Therapy Assistant, or Physical Therapist Assistant, the Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test (HOBET) assessment is required.

• The student has submitted official college transcripts showing successful completion of appropriate college-level mathematics and/or writing courses. • The student has submitted a copy of ACT/SAT test scores to the Transfer Office and, based on specific sub-scores, has received approval to waive the placement assessment requirement in one or more areas.

Processing Once the application file has been evaluated against the program entrance requirements, Rhodes State College will notify the applicant of acceptance or non-acceptance.

• The Dean of the Division in which the course is housed approves your enrollment in one or more courses for personal selfenrichment.

To help applicants who lack an adequate background for the limited enrollment programs, the College offers developmental and regular courses which provide applicants an opportunity to prepare themselves further for the program of their choice. Successful implementation of this course of action requires academic advising. An appointment for this advising can be arranged through the Office of Advising.

Orientation All new students should make plans to attend an orientation session prior to their first registration. It is a requirement for students to meet with an academic advisor before their first registration. Students can fulfill this requirement by attending orientation. Orientation programs are held before each semester and are designed to introduce students to student success strategies, personnel, registration procedures, facilities, and requirements for their academic program.

Assessment and Mandatory Placement Information from placement assessment is never used to deny admission to the College. However, placement assessment is mandatory for all students prior to registration in their initial courses with a prerequisite of mathematics, reading, and/or writing. Mandatory course placement will be guided by the prerequisites identified in the course descriptions in this catalog. College Readiness Courses taught by Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) instructors may serve as a prerequisite to developmental math and reading courses.

Specific dates and times of orientation sessions will be posted on the Rhodes State website. Orientation information will be mailed to students after submitting their application to the College is received. Students should register for their preferred orientation date on the website or by calling the Office of Advising.

COMPASS is used for placement into mathematics and reading courses at the College. This placement assessment does not function like a typical test because there is no “passing” score. COMPASS measures your current skill level and identifies the best place for you to start. If you believe that you would benefit from enrolling initially in a lower level course than your results suggest, you are free to do so.

Students entering Allied Health programs are required to attend orientation as a part of the qualification process for entry into their specific program.

In writing courses at the College, a self-placement assessment instrument enables students to evaluate their current writing abilities against examples of expected performance in various levels of writing courses. Based upon this guided self-reflection, you will select the writing course that aligns best with your current abilities.

Advanced Standing

Transfer students are not required to attend an orientation but are encouraged to do so. They must meet individually with an academic advisor, however, prior to their first registration.

Rhodes State College recognizes the value of the educational experience provided by the area’s secondary vocational programs and acknowledges that in some fields vocational students may acquire competencies and skills similar or identical to those attained in certain courses offered by the College. Further opportunities exist through Tech Prep for Career Center students.

Students may be exempted from some or all course placement assessment if at least one of the following conditions applies: • The student is a former Rhodes State College student with placement scores on file.
