Thank you Dick ery much in the news over the past few weeks has been the devasta on caused by the Margaret River bush fires, our deepest sympathy for those who suffered loss in V this sad event that ironically resulted from the loss of control over preventa ve measures intended to prevent such disasters. I am very happy to report however that our good friends and long standing RAWA members, Don & Doreen Bredenkamp who most of you know, were fortunate not have lost their lovely home and co age, the "Shala Mushe". When I phoned them during the final stages of the fire being brought under control, Don told me it was rather a close call and they were unable to leave their home as all access roads had been closed by the authori es, that is, if you le you were not allowed back in. I have no doubt many readers are glad to know that Don & Doreen both fared well during the many anxious moments of this frightening experience. t is with the deepest sadness and sorrow that I announce the death of Jacky Capper’s mother, mother‐in‐law of our RAWA Administrator Douglas Capper. The following bereavement no ce as request by Doug Capper: Averill Milson passed away peacefully at Joondalup Hospital on Wednesday 30th November a er a short illness. She will be sadly missed by her daughter Jacky Capper and son in law Douglas, her daughter Nikki Petheram and son in law John and their respec ve families in Australia and overseas.

Bill commented on a WikiLeaks report which suggested that the reason for Solomon Mujuru’s demise was that he had allegedly promised to take his fac on of ZANU PF over to the MDC Tsvangirai if the MDC T agreed that Joyce Mujuru would hold the posi on of Vice President if they (MDC T) won the forth coming elec on. It was reported that Mugabe has threatened to be even tougher on an ZANU PF supporters than he had been in the past. Only the mouth was used now it will be the fist. Sylvia men oned that there was an appeal to the Zimbabwean Diaspora to support the overthrow of Mugabe at the coming elec on. Bill men oned that it was on the “Zimbabwean” web page and was presented by Mr Bennet – it also carried a series of photo’s of the atroci es commi ed against MDC supporters in the 2008 elec on. Many MDC youths had fled the country since the elec on due to the appraisals against them by ZANU PF thugs and youth brigades (Green bombers). RAWA Past Events: Picnic at Garvey park – turn out was not brilliant but those who a ended enjoyed the occasion. Future Events: RAWA picnic at Kings Park Sunday 11th December 2011 followed by: the coffee ladies Christmas Lunch on the 13th Dec and: our Christmas Lunch on the 15 December 2011 at the Holiday Inn Perth. We need to collect the payment for the Christmas lunch. As a point of interest the $1 collected from each of you during the year yielded $350 in addi on we received a dona on from Mr Bredenkamp of $300 towards the cost of the M'dala’s Christmas Lunch 2010, unfortunately it arrived too late so it will be put towards this years costs and finally Midge suggested that the general fund should make up the amount to $1000. It was decided that the charge would remain at $40 a head for members and $44 a head for guests. Wine would be paid for by M’dala’s and added to the bill. We have also given $250 to RAWA for our pensioners. Other Planned Func ons dates to be advised, watch the “Bundu Times” Garage Sale. Luncheon at the High Wycombe Tavern. Suggested it would be a mid week func on to avoid the noise! Our Poet Mike Bray mike read one of his poems which was as usual both informa ve and amusing. Other Ma ers Don Bullock discussed an ar cle about the ANC Youth Leader recently expelled from the ANC and what his poli cal ambi ons were for South Africa. Basically they amounted to the seizure of white assets, land, companies, etc. The usual Africanisa on programme. Don also warned the group about the latest threat to Credit/Debit card holders and the fact that there were criminals obtaining and selling credit card details including the 3 le er security codes, names and addresses of card holders and even telephone numbers. He suggested that everyone be cau ous. One of our members, ex Zimbabwe Na onal Railways reported that he had received a le er informing him that his pension had been paid into an bank account in Zimbabwe in US$ and that by informing them of his current details he could have his pension transferred to Zimbabwe every 6 months. This was good news for some pensioners although the actual payment was significantly below what it should be. The mee ng was closed at 11.20 am.

The amazing Swa er Swatter was a chameleon who came into my life in 1958, when I lived and worked in Nelspruit in the Eastern Transvaal lowveld. In reality Swatter adopted me, rather than the other way round. One morning, as I was shaving, I Swa er noticed a small brown chameleon on the end of a branch dangling over the wall of the communal ablution block. I put my finger up and he got on. I took him to work and put him on the typist’s pot plant and he amused all who saw him, as he caught flies that got within range of his whip‐lash, sticky tongue. When I was traveling he usually sat on the car’s rear‐view mirror. He never had a cage. I would often put him on a lawn to catch whatever took his fancy and, because it was almost impossible to spot him on the grass, I would just sit in that area and in a few minutes he would climb onto my leg and off we’d go. Chameleons are diurnal. A soon as it got dark his eyes would get droopy, he would latch on to a twig etc. coil up his tail and he would not move until morning. One evening, when my girl‐friend and I were going to a function, Swatter had gone to sleep on the lapel of her black fold‐over coat that was the fashion at the time. I was going to move him but Jean said he’d be okay where he was and he’d be better than a brooch. Well he caused quite a stir, as people wanted to know where she had bought such a beautiful brooch. After that, whenever she wore the coat at night Swatter was press‐ganged as a decoration. RAWA Bundu Times issue 174

The Editor of a Johannesburg newspaper heard of this remarkable chameleon and Swatter featured in a full‐page article. I kept a detailed record of his likes and dislikes, his ability to think and work things out, his preferred diet, his fear of other creatures. But his greatest reaction was when I showed him a female chameleon. His sex drive was insatiable, and using this as a catalyst, I set him tests to see how he could work out how to catch any females I found. I would put her onto a flower pot or pot plant in an almost inaccessible place in our lounge. I would then show her to Swatter and put him in a different part of the lounge remote from her and let him go. I never set him a task he could not finally conquer. In 1961 I went to Salisbury to stay with my cousin, Brian. While there Swa er must have eaten an insect that had been sprayed with insec cide, because he got ill and in a day or two was dead. A tragedy‐ but what a wonderful li le friend, who brought much joy to many who would never have believed it possible.

Book Cri c of Denis Petmezaki’s Book “So far & So good” By Bill Johnstone on behalf of the RAWA Commi ee.
A thoroughly good read, though like anything worthwhile it is best devoured in small regular chunks! It takes you through Denis Petmezaki's life from birth through to today and while not a “couldn’t put down” type book, I found that I enjoyed and had to read every word, as many different themes were intertwined. From his birth, to his younger years in the Sudan and upbringing in South of England during the war, the book’s main theme is about the family, particularly the strength of the bonds between family members which stood them in good stead throughout their adventures, whether in business, wild life, touring, migration, horses, educational matters, courtship and marriages, to name but a few. Being Rhodesian I was able to empathise and relate too many of the interesting and diverse incidents Denis recalls. In a way our lives have run a parallel course in that after the Rhodesian war I too emigrated to the UK. Not to the beautiful south west of England as did Denis, but to the Midlands, and from thence, 20 years later via Zimbabwe, to Australia. Once I realised what Denis’s professional occupation was, in the light sensitive paper world, it became fascinating to gain some insight as to what entrepreneurs commercial businessmen were in order to defeat the full intentions of those imposing sanctions against Rhodesia. Denis’s honest but perhaps naïve view of the “black” population of Rhodesia expresses accurately, how the vast majority of white Rhodesians thought. There were a few exceptions. Interestingly enough although the Australian PM, Malcolm Frazer, was a staunch supporter of Robert Mugabe, in our view it was very much a case of the pot calling the kettle black! Like many Rhodesians who either “Took the gap” or emigrated with few assets due to currency and other restrictions Denis and family knuckled down and got on with life very successfully in the UK. It was no easy task but the challenges were overcome and eventually Denis and Fay followed their offspring to Australia. I have no hesitation in recommending this delightful account to any interested person.

Msasa tree The Msasa is a tropical tree and grows best in open woodland where there is a sharp dis nc on between wet and dry seasons. The northern end of its range is near Tabora in Tanzania (about 5° S) and its southernmost extent is near Quissico on the coast of Mozambique just outside the tropics (about 25° S). Msasas need a minimum of around 500 mm rain although the amount of rain in the summer growing season is more important than the annual rainfall. It needs a mean annual temperature of around 19 to 20 °C. It does not thrive under a combina on of cold and wet condi ons and like many tropical plants it requires a hot dry period before the onset of the growing season. It is known to reach a height of 20 metres in ideal condi ons.

Garvey Park Braai & Picnic 30th October, 2011 Glorious weather, on the banks of the Swan River, and great people – what more can you ask. With so much going on around town our numbers were down but what was small in terms of quan ty was certainly made up for in quality.
Doug ini ally looked a bit concerned about the low turnout but we are happy to say Pat’s good wine, the great venue and company soon had him restored to his normal self.

Hannes got through the border @ about 4.30 yesterday a ernoon and when I spoke to him about 10 mins ago he was @ Kingshaven dropping off the first parcels. I cannot tell every‐ one how relieved and happy our Golden Oldies are!!!!

Zimbabwe Pensioner Support Fund
Once again Pat provided several bo les of wine and looked a er everyone – thank you Pat. We were inundated by several children who spo ed the Rhodesian flag. Actual‐ ly it was the Zimbabwe bird on the coat of arms which caught the a en on of
News update on the many obstacles that faced the December run going ahead.
The October trip: to Zimbabwe has been cancelled due to new requirements by the Zimbabwean govern‐ ment. A er 9 years. We are currently in the process of registering as a Charity in Zimba‐ bwe and this should hopefully be completed shortly. Hannes has spent the past 10 days in Zimbabwe and has been back in SA a day and will be leaving again in the next hour or so with all the addi on paper work required. All pensioners who required their Chronic meds have however received them. The Christmas / December trip will be leaving Tuesday the 29/11/2011 and due to the current circumstances each pensioner will basically be receiv‐ ing double boxes. We thank everyone who supports our Golden Oldies and we will be back to doing what we do best shortly.
Early November update: Ok, so we are now registered in Zimbabwe as a Charity and are just awai ng the final pa‐ perwork from Zimbabwe. So it looks like the Christmas Trip is going to happen. We are now going full steam at the warehouse to make sure everything is 100% ready. The departure date from Malelane is the 29th November. We are currently in the process of purchasing and packing all the SPECIAL CHRISTMAS goodies for our GOLDEN OLDIES. I would once again like to THANK everyone out there who helps us to support the pensioners that are s ll in Zimbabwe. Without your help it would not be possible. God Bless.
16th November, Hannes Wrote: Ok so I am leaving this a ernoon to go and collet the final paper work required for the December trip. (Touch Wood). As men oned previously we will be leaving Malelane on the 29th of November. This is the last trip for 2011 and so far it looks like it is really going to be a good one for our pensioners. Thank you to all of you who have helped and supported us the past year. You are our Hero's.
23rd November: Ok so we have less than a week to go ll the Christmas trip leaves Malelane. Hannes is s ll in Zimbabwe collec ng the final permits and we are going full steam ahead. This will be our last trip for 2011 and we are going to have some incredibly happy Golden Oldies thanks to you our supporters. We have Daniel Koekemoer coming up from KZN who will be driving the one truck and Hannes will be driving the other one. Heather Milner who handles our collec ons from the UK will be co‐pilo ng with Hannes to also get first hand knowledge of what our pensioners are going through. We cannot THANK YOU ENOUGH for helping us to do what we do. You are our Heroes and God Bless .
25th November: A er being on the road for almost 2 months to get the paper work sorted, Hannes had an accident on Friday morning on his way back from Zimbabwe. He is ok. a bit bruised and ba ered. We forced him to go to casual es on Sunday for a thorough check up. A er his triple bi pass last year we wanted to make sure he is 100% ok. The air bag opening caused some serious bruising and so on, but thank heavens nothing too serious.
30th November: Hannes, Daniel and his co‐driver le Malelane about 15 mins ago. The Christmas trip is now officially on its way. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible.
1st December: Ok we are @ the border, Finally!!! All the paper work is here. Lets hope for a quick passing so that we can con nue our journey and bring those Christmas smiles to our 1650 Golden Oldies. The 2 trucks are packed beyond full and to be honest we cant wait to see Happy faces again. The past 2 months have been extreme, but it definitely looks like we are mak‐ ing progress. Thank you to everyone for your kind words. I am fine and carrying on regard‐ less. I have been made to promise that I will take tons of pics, so that you too can see the

one youngster and we discovered they were from Zimbabwe. He and his fami‐ ly came to Perth about 6 years ago and as he was only 5 at the me it was ‘well spo ed’.

Book wanted Looking for a book called “Whispering Death” by Daniel Carney. Albert Kranner of Sydney Australia is desperately trying to find a copy of this book he once read in the late 70’s. The movie Albino (also known as The Night of the Askari[1], Death in the Sun [2] and Whispering Death) is a 1976 German thriller directed by Jürgen Goslar and starring Christopher Lee, James Faulkner and Sybil Danning filmed on loca on during the Rhodesian bush war. The movie is based on a novel by Daniel Carney called The Whispering Death. The plot revolves around a Bri sh South Africa Police officer in Rhodesia, hun ng down the albino terrorist who raped and murdered his fiancée. Senior moments Arthur is 90 years old. He's played golf every day since his re rement 25 years ago. One day he arrives home looking downcast. "That's it," he tells his wife, "I'm giving up golf.
