DOUBLE TROUBLE

/06/

How far will it go? When a single backflip was the pinnacle of a FMX, many were suggesting this could be as far as we go but things change real quick, some say for the better and others not so. At the recent Lille/Bercy Supercross, Aussie Josh Sheehan produced a near clinical double backflip to wow the screaming French crowd. Josh is one of only a handful of riders who has nailed the trick live at an event. Sheehan is currently the only rider to land a triple backflip, will we see this performed in 2016 let’s just wait and see.

Coolest looking team on the planet

There is no two ways about it, Geico Honda look absolutely incredible, just look at this recent team photo from photographer Simon Cudby. The Honda is one of the slickest looking machines you’ll see in any paddock across the globe, add the perfect colour combination of gear and the speed of their riders Jimmy Decostis, RJ Hampshire, Malcolm Stewart, Christian Craig and Jordon Smith and the team are set for an epic season on both sides of the USA Supercross championship. As yet the decision of who rides on what coast has not been decided, we’re sure it’s going to be an equal split of talent but maybe Jimmy to the East Coast and Malcolm to the West coast is a likely possibility. Keep your eyes peeled to our social media sites to find out the answer sometime in the next week or so.

ZANDER MOVES UP AND IS READY FOR THE BIG BOYS Alexander Brown produced the goods in 2015, winning the Thor British Youth Nationals 125 Class, Zander as he likes to be known is one of our future prospects to keep an eye on in 2016. You’ve had a great year Zander, 125 British Champion - how did it feel when you crossed the line and took the title? “Felt great to take the British title win again, the last time was on the 65cc in 2011. I had a disaster in the 85 small wheel and big wheel classes due to loads of injuries, it was great to win 4 out of the 5 rounds on the 125 but gutted not to win at Desertmartin. But was so pleased to take title on my first year on a 125 and making my family and sponsors proud.” New bike for next year, all change? “I have signed with Apico Husqvarna so will be riding the 250F Husky in 2016, can’t wait for the season to start, I’m loving the new bike.” Winter is here and the weather is pants up from where you are from in Scotland, do you plan to ride all year there or is it a little wet and cold to get decent practice in? “It’s hard to get practice in Scotland as no tracks are open, but I have been up to Tain a few times to get used to the bike, unfortunately that’s still 4 hours away from me. After Christmas I’m hoping to get to Spain and start the New Year with solid bike time.” There are six rounds of the Thor British Youth Nationals in 2016 and one in Scotland, we bet you can’t wait for that one? “Yeah I can’t wait for the one in Scotland, so my family can come along and support me over the weekend. I’m looking forward to the short drive as well so I don’t need to leave on Thursday like most rounds.”

First up, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our readers and advertisers, try not to over do the mince pies but if you do ENJOY. So we’re back with edition 2 of ‘Live Motocross’ I must say our first edition which was released at the Dirt Bike Show was well received by readers and the industry alike, this was much appreciated by me and the team here at ‘Live’. 2015 has been an amazing year for a lot of people in our sport, riders such as Ryan Dungey, Tim Gajser, Romain Febvre and Shaun Simpson have been outstanding. But for some it could have been a lot better. We said goodbye to Ryan Villopoto who retired after sustaining an injury at round 4 of the world championship in Italy, a beast on the bike and the sport will certainly miss his racing exploits. We move into 2016 with great excitement for the Monster Energy Supercross which starts slightly later than normal on January 10 in Anaheim. Can the likes of Jason Anderson, Trey Canard, Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac wrestle the title from the firm grasp of Ryan Dungey? We wouldn’t bet against it but whatever happens we are truly excited at the prospect of another season of incredible Supercross racing. Chussy EDITOR.

//LILLE/BERCY SUPERCROSS ROCKED OUR WORLD VIVE LA FRANCE

It could have been a very somber two nights in Lille, the event was the night after the terrorist attack in Paris which killed 130 innocent people and injured hundreds more. The event nearly didn’t happen, on Saturday morning the promoters were still unsure if it would go ahead, after discussions regarding safety the announcement was made and it was on. The French fans and riders from around the world showed their support and put two fingers up to the murderous scum and enjoyed a weekend of superb entertainment, a true show of solidarity by everyone involved and the correct decision for the show to run.

SIMPSON

After a year to remember for Shaun Simpson, the Maxxis British Champion raced his first ever Lille/ Bercy Supercross. Having prepared by building his own track in Scotland, Shaun showed he really is a world class rider no matter format he races. “Overall it has been great fun,” said Shaun. “The track has been pretty technical, not only with the jump layout but with the soil as

well. The whoops are something where you can see the Americans, and guys who ride a lot supercross, really have those dialled in. The weekend didn’t end in the best way but the main goal was to come here and have a blast. The main did not go to plan but the Superpole was an improvement as was the qualifying race. On the whole I’ve had a positive weekend in France.”

//BEST FMX SHOW EVER One part of the show you can really rely on in France is the awesome FMX show, showcasing some of the best freestyle talent from around the world. Nate Adams, Josh Sheehan, Mat Rebeaud and David Rinaldo to name just a few were once again outstanding. To watch these guys live is mind blowing. The riders performed flips, whips and all sorts of tricks which kept the crowd from getting bored in between races, if you add in the magnificent laser show, this could have been the best FMX event outside the famous Red Bull X-Fighters tour the daddy of them all.

What is it with incredibly sexy girls and motorsport? They go together like chalk and cheese or fish and chips, without one you’ve got to have the other. Monster Energy who were the official sponsors in France once again pulled out all the stops with a bevy of beauties over the two days. They were everywhere, if you ventured down into the pit area, riders signings or just wandering around the arena, you would have spotted them having selfies with the fans and making people smile - good work ladies.

//ROMAIN FEBVRE IS A TRUE CHAMPION

After winning his first MXGP title in his so called rookie year, the young French superstar Romain Febvre didn’t disappoint his home fans and showed up at the Lille Arena wanting to show he can ride just as well indoors as he can outdoors. It didn’t quite go to plan but it was obvious from the first gate drop Febvre could be another rider disappearing Stateside after

a few more years racing MXGP, he certainly has all the skills for a career racing in the USA. World champion and part of the victorious French MXoN team in Ernee - 2016 has been a great year for the Factory Yamaha rider - More to come from this kid. “It has been an amazing year for me and I cannot expect anytWhing more than this,” explained Romain.

You can see where it’s all going, Tony Cairoli has upped his game in Rally which could mean when he does hang up his motocross boots, Rally will become his next motorsport challenge.

Tony recently took part in the Monza Rally and put his driving skills to the test against other motorsport legends such as Valentino Rossi and Thierry Neuville. TC222 said on his instagram page, “2015 is just not my year, tyre failure in the lap of the LAST stages of Monza Rally Show! We missed the podium while we were in the second place overall! Cairoli did manage to win the Masters Show in his Citroen SD3 WRC, which made up for his tyre failure in the main event. What next for the 8 time world champion? Definitely another crack at the MXGP title in 2016 but after that, who knows.

Anaheim 1 last year was an eye opener for many as the New Mexico native finished in second position, his words last year summed how good it felt at the time, “I’m stoked.” His off-season training has been exceptional as Jason is part of the Aldon Baker stable, come January 10 we will see just how much he and the bike has improved since last year, we are expecting big things in 2016 so he best not disappoint no pressure then.

AUTOBIOGRAPHIES

FOR

YOUR

SANTA

SACK

Most of us normally get a little bored over the Christmas holiday, once Boxing Day is done and dusted we’re itching to get get back on our bikes, unfortunately due to the UK weather sometimes that’s just not possible. So to stem your boredom and to stimulate the brain, here are favourite motocross autobiographies to add to your Christmas wishlist. Josh: Flying Kiwi!: The Boy from Motueka Who Made It to the Top in GP Motocross Two Kiwi motocross riders have shot to the top of the international scene in recent years, and both have huge followings in the UK and Europe where they have been riding together on the circuit. Josh Coppins, from Motueka is the older of the two, and has broken ground and led the way for his younger mate, Ben Townley, who has been able to benefit from his experience and guidance. While Ben is a bit young for his own book, he is happy to have his story to date included in Josh’s book. Huge family sacrifices by the Coppins who financed his early years on the circuit, when Josh was living off the smell of the proverbial oily rag and crippling painful injuries that almost saw him paralysed have dogged Josh, but he has battled to the top despite everything that has been thrown at him, including accusations of drugs cheating.

/026/

Hurricane: The Bob Hannah Story This book, written by Tom Madigan, is a great insight into the career of Bob ‘Hurricane!’ Hannah, one of America’s top motocrossers. It documents his early years, his rise to fame as a Yamaha factory rider and laterly for team Honda & Suzuki. Lots of previously unseen photo’s and comments from his friends, mechanics and fellow racers.

Stefan Everts: The Biography Stefan Everts is a born world champion. He has dominated the world stage of motocross for fifteen years and won ten world championships. Talented, driven to perfection, faced with adversity, Everts has seen and experienced it all. Awesome read.

Wide Open: A Life in Supercross by Jerermy McGrath With seven Supercross titles - a feat no other racer in Supercross history has even come close to, two additional 125 Western Region Supercross Championships, one 250 Outdoor National Championship and two FIM World Supercross Championships, most within this spectacular sport feel Jeremy McGrath helped catapult the sport of Supercross into the mainstream and beyond.

We had a total of 260 riders participate in this year’s Thor British Youth Nationals from all corners of the UK including Northern Ireland, Wales, England and Scotland. Registration for 2016 is looking really impressive and we’re hoping to hit the magic 300 riders.

Hydration is huge part of staying healthy at the races, our water sponsor Ice Valley supplied the riders with over 5600 bottles of water for the 5 rounds, if you break it down, riders consumed around 29 bottles each.

Bike time is what the riders love at the BYN so each rider has plenty of time to dial in the tracks. Fifteen minutes of practice followed by six blocks of racing over two days. By the time riders head home on Sunday evening most are ready for bed by the time they hit home.

Did you know that over six rounds of racing riders, staff and family members consumed around 18,000 slices of bacon which equates to 9000 extremely tasty Bacon butties.

Our 2015 Thor British Youth Nationals rider of the year was Harry Kimber. Over 600 people took part in the vote to find the eventual winner. The vote was so close we had to count it five times to make sure it was correct.

You guys love watching our BYN videos, in 2015 we produced over 60 Youtube features filmed by the awesome TooFastMedia and over 100 shorter clips for our social media sites. Expect even more in 2016.

Knee press up – Hands slightly wider than shoulder width, keep hips down, knees hip width apart, ensure all weight goes onto hands. Keeping body straight and knees bent, lower body to floor by bending arms. Push body up until arms are extended.

Incline Press up – (used a medicine ball for added difficulty, but you can use a bench, step, sofa…etc. Arm width also to your desire) An incline press up makes the exercise slightly easier as it takes some of the weight away from the arms. Remember to keep those feet hip width apart with that good strong posture.

Standard press up - Hands slightly wider than shoulder width, feet hip width. Ensure hips do not drop or rise up. Bend the arms as much as possible to lower the body to the floor while maintaining the perfect straight posture.

Stacked Foot press up – Take the same position as a standard press up, but rest one foot on top of the other (heel to toe), try to keep the legs perfectly straight and keep the exercise symmetrical by changing the legs every other set.

Spiderman press up – (not going to lie, this is my least favourite) Balance, coordination and strength play a key role for making this position work. Hands should be just wider than shoulder width apart, as you Wide press up – take the arms as wide as you can (try to get the drop down into your press up position, you hands underneath the elbows when down in the press up position need to bring a single leg up and out to if you can) feet remain hip width apart. the side towards the elbow (almost like a dog cocking his leg) while keeping a good strong body position. Your body will try to rotate to compensate…don’t let it! Keep the body as low as you can. Alternate each side with every repetition.

With the New Year fast approaching it’s time to look ahead to the 2016 Maxxis ACU British Championship season

/038/

R I C K B LY T H

New Season, New Format Over the off season a number of changes have been made to the Maxxis Championship with the biggest being the changes to the race format that will see the championship revert back to the traditional two moto format. With the reduced race format, the Maxxis event will become a shortened day for riders, teams and spectators meaning the whole family can enjoy a day watching the best motocross action in the UK. For 2016 the Maxxis Championship will see the MXY2 class supporting all eight rounds, allowing the countries best youth riders to apply their trade in front of the main teams in the paddock.

/039/

Simpson, Searle and many, many more take on MX1 Best of British Circuits The domestic series will once again consist of eight rounds and kicks off at the traditional Norfolk circuit of Lyng on the 20th March before battling throughout the summer until the final round at Foxhill in September. Other regular championship venues include the famous Canada Heights and Hawkstone Park alongside last year’s new venues Blaxhall and Preston Docks who both produced great racing. Making a welcomed return to the series for the first time since 2013 is the world-class Desertmartin circuit in Northern Ireland on June 12th, while the championship will also be making the trip across the border into Scotland in early July. March 20th Lyng April 24th Canada Heights May 22nd Hawkstone Park June 12th Desertmartin July 3rd TBA July 17th Blaxhall August 21st Preston Docks September 18th Foxhill

/040/

After dominating this year’s MX1 championship Shaun Simpson will be looking to continue his dominance on home soil for his new team, Wilvo Forkrent KTM. The 2016 season will see Simpson face a tough line up of competition include former World MX2 silver medallist Tommy Searle on the Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki, who will be looking to claim his first adult domestic title after recent injury plagued seasons. Other riders to watch out for in the MX1 class include last year’s runner Tanel Leok on the MVR-D Husqvarna, and the powerful Buildbase Honda duo of Kristian Whatley and Graeme Irwin. Another team looking to make a strong impact are the Geartec Yamaha pairing of Elliott Banks-Browne and last season’s rising star Ashley Wilde. Reigning MX2 champion Steven Lenoir also makes the move into the MX1 class with the Dyer and Butler KTM team and will be looking to challenge at the front of the field.

Young Guns and Unknown Stars of MX2 The MX2 class is often seen as the most exciting class with plenty of close racing at every round and the new season is sure to be no different. With Lenoir moving into the MX1 class, like Adam Sterry and Ben Watson will be looking to claim the crown but they will have to overcome Russian import Vsevolod Brylyakov on the Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki vacated by Max Anstie. For the 2016 season the Apico Husqvarna squad have retained the services of former European Champion Steven Clarke and joining him is regular MX2 front runner Bryan Mackenzie, producing a strong two rider line up. Other big signings to the MX2 class includes the return of Martin Barr to the 250f with the Buildbase Honda and Neville Bradshaw on the Heads and All Threads Suzuki, while Mel Pocock will also be looking to make his long awaited return to racing following his hand injury from last year. The next generation of stars moving into the MX2 class include the reigning MXY2 champion Ollie Osmaston, BYN Youth Open Champion Jordan Eccles along with Luke Smith who will all be looking to mix it with the best of the British MX2 riders.

RYAN DUNGEY Once again the all American super hero Ryan Dungey produced the goods and set the standard for everyone else to follow in both motocross and Supercross. He genuinely is Captain America, super nice guy and a total professional, 2015 was certainly his year.

CAIROLI VS VILLOPOTO The hype train started so well but ended so disastrously for both Tony Cairoli and Ryan Villopoto, Ryan’s final year of racing was cut short by a crash in Italy and a few weeks after he announced his retirement from the sport. For that short time over 4 rounds it was incredibly exciting to have both riders go head to head in MXGP - it was just never meant to be.

ROMAIN FEBVRE The Rookie of the year is now a world MXGP champion. The French wonderkid Romain Febvre certainly opened up a whole world of whoop ass on his competitors, Romain won 15 out of the 36 races and took the title by a huge 195 points from second place rider Gautier Paulin. Can he take this form into 2016 and retain his crown?

MXON The biggest race on the planet returned to Ernee in France for what was a remarkable spectacle for all involved, packed to the rafters and an atmosphere like no other. 80,000 fans packed into the French circuit to see the home nation of France triumph with some of the best racing you’ll see anywhere.

SHAUN SIMPSON The Scottish KTM rider is like a fine wine, seems to mature and get better with age. Maybe that’s the key to success in motocross? Shaun Simpson’s year was one to remember taking the Maxxis British MX1 championship for a second time and two overall wins in MXGP - impressive year by anyone’s standards.

Things are moving at a rapid rate for Buildbase Honda, owned by 3 time world champion Dave Thorpe the team is progressing and moving forward in 2016 with new signings and a new set up for the coming season. “Neil Tuxworth/Honda Racing Team Manager approached us in the summer to see if we would consider running both MX1 and MX2,” says Dave. “Internally we gave it a great deal of thought because whilst we have been committed to MX1 for a number of years we know the cost of MX2 racing is considerably higher. Through Ryans company (4p power) we have been able to put together a very good MX1/MX2 engine, whilst it’s still early, initial tests have been very encouraging. In MX2 Lewis Trickett is a young guy with lots of potential and we have now taken on Martin Barr, I believe between them, they can push one another on.” Like most teams, winter in the UK can be tough, Buildbase Honda have once again decided to head to Italy to compete in the Italian championship. “Sardinia in Italy offers us several options, good weather, quality tracks and good races. The races are important because we compete against GP riders and it allows the team to test in race conditions. The truck pulls out in the third week of January and is away approximately four weeks.” In MX1 the team have two very experienced riders in Kristian Whatley and recently signed Graeme Irwin, both capable of winning races in the super tough Maxxis British Championship. Dave explains, “In 2015 Shaun Simpson was in great form and with the inclusion of Tommy Searle in 2016 you have two potential GP podium riders plus the likes of Jake Nicholls, Tanel Leok, Gert Krestinov and MX2 champion Steven Lenoir moving up to the bigger class, it’s going to be a great season. But I know Kristian and Graeme can and will challenge for podiums on a weekly basis, they are both training hard at the moment, so given a good roll of the dice we will be in the mix.”

Britain’s next heavyweight world champion is a dirt bike fan.

Anthony Joshua has the world at his very large feet, standing 6ft 6’ and weighing in at around 17st, Anthony is a beast in the ring. If you witnessed his recent fight with Dillian Whyte you know exactly what we’re talking about. The good news is AJ is a huge dirt bike fan and recently picked up a brand new motocross bike from Kawasaki UK. Anthony said: “I’m so excited to get my hands on this bike. I’ve been planning to get it for months but I wanted to wait until after the fight so I didn’t lose focus. A lot of people are surprised when they find out that I enjoy riding bikes but I love them I’ve been riding them since I was in my early teens and love spending time with my mates riding. Gill Jockel, Marketing Section Head for Kawasaki UK, said: “We’re really pleased that Anthony Joshua rides a Kawasaki. Our whole philosophy for Team Green is to nurture talent and ensure it rises through the ranks – and that’s exactly what AJ is doing in the boxing world. We wish him lots of fun on his new green-machine and look forward to keeping up to date with his adventures on social media.”
