The eleventh Martha Argerich Project, promoted by Lugano Festival, RSI Rete Due and the bank BSI, will take place from 6 to 28 June 2012. It will once again bring together some 60 artists around the great pianist in Lugano. Talented young players and renowned artists will alternately take the stage in duos, chamber groups and with the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana to play rarely-performed compositions alongside masterpieces of the repertoire. Pianists will include Maria João Pires, Stephen Kovacevich, Lilya Zilberstein, Nelson Goerner, Nicholas Angelich, Khatia Buniatishvili, Polina Leschenko, Alexander Mogilevsky, Alexander Gurning, Alan Weiss and Gabriela Montero, who will play her latest composition, ExPatria for piano and orchestra; among the violinists there will be Renaud Capuçon, Ilya Gringolts, Dora Schwarzberg and Alissa Margulis; among the violists Nathan Braude, Lyda Chen and Nora Romanoff; while the line-up of cellists will feature Mischa Maisky, Gautier Capuçon and Torleif Thedéen. The fil rouge running through this year’s project will be compositions based on composers’ re-workings of other composers’ themes: variations, paraphrases, fantasies, souvenirs etc. Specifically, the evening of 11 June, entitled D’après, will be entirely dedicated to these compositions with such highlights as the Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn by Brahms, played as a duet by Martha Argerich and Nicholas Angelich; Improvisation über das Bachsche Chorallied by Busoni, played by pianists Daniel Rivera and Mauricio Vallina; and Contrapuntal Paraphrase on Weber’s “Invitation to the Dance” by Godowsky, played by Nelson Goerner and Alexander Mogilevsky. The repertoire of piano duets will specifically include Rachmaninov’s transcription of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty (performed by Sergio Tiempo and Karin Lechner), Reger’s Mozart Variations (performed by Francesco Piemontesi and Jura Margulis), and the Moscheles-Mendelssohn’s Grand Duo Concertante on theme by Weber (performed by Gabriele Baldocci and Christopher Falzone). Among the younger performers, the afternoon recitals will include pianists Plamena Mangova, Dmitry Onishchenko, ShinHeae Kang, Eliane Reyes, Alejandro Petrasso, and Anton and Daniel Gerzenberg, violinist Anna Mahaffy, and tenor Chen Chen, who holds a BSI scholarship. There will also be a piano master class for young Argentinean pianists, organized in co-operation with the Foreign Ministry of the Argentine Republic and the Swiss Embassy in Buenos Aires, and a violin master class led by Ivry Gitlis. In the closing concert on 27 June, Martha Argerich and Mischa Maisky will play the Double Concerto, “Romantic Offering” by Rodion Scedrin, dedicated to them, with the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana, conducted by Alexander Vedernikov.
