Welcome from our hosts, the Palace of Arts A couple of months ago we wrote: “…the two of us are truly looking forward to be standing at the door of the Palace of Arts at midday on 19th April saying: “Welcome to Budapest, welcome to the 22nd IAMA Conference. Please come in.” And now the moment has come. We are happy to see all of you here as a result of several months of preparation and we hope that Budapest will find its way to your heart – if it has not already done so. We are living in difficult times. The economic crisis, unemployment, tensions within nations and between cultures not only make life harder but sometimes even extinguish it. How can art respond to this situation? Should the muses stand still? We do believe it is not so. As the present conference shows, there are many of us who believe that it is better to look for good solutions in hard times together. In times when orchestras, opera houses, choirs, ballet ensembles and theatres are closed and extinguished, when thousands of artists lose their job, when a ticket for a concert or a theatre performance is mere luxury compared to the expenses of everyday living, when sponsors and patrons are busy with their own business matters, when state funding has not been available for years – in such times we must combine our forces and work out the solutions together. We hope that the participants of the 22nd IAMA International Conference will depart with many good ideas, having made new friends and valuable contacts. This will help art in many parts of the world to escape negligence and indifference, to create successful artistic projects and to fill the concert halls and theatres with audience. If you look out of the window, you see the Danube which connects nations and cultures since thousands of years: its waves take further items and ideas, in order to enrich both the origin where they come from and the goal they are aiming at. When you travel along the Danube in the city, you will see the bridges which not only connect Pest and Buda but al so East and West. The culture of our Hungarian nation originating from Asia has been developing here for centuries and it has integrated everything that Europe could offer. We have Nobel-laureates, we have world-
famous writers, painters and sculptors, actors in both the theatre and the film industry, and composers. How poor would European civilisation be without Liszt and Bartók. Let us round off this greeting with the words of Bartók: “... My own idea, however — of which I have been fully conscious since I found myself as a composer—is the brotherhood of peoples, brotherhood in spite of all wars and conflicts. I try—to the best of my ability —to serve this idea in my music; therefore I don’t reject any influence, be it Slovakian, Romanian, Arabic or from any other source. The source must only be clean, fresh and healthy!” (Letter of Bartók to Octavian Beu, January 10, 1931) We are grateful for the IAMA Board and all participants for your trust in the preparation team which has done a fantastic job – thank you, colleagues! CSABA KÁEL
A graduate in construction engineering of the Budapest University of Technology, Csaba Káel obtained a degree in television directing at the College of Theatre and Film as a student of Károly Makk and István Szabó. He has directed several documentaries, short feature films, television series, video clips and hundreds of commercials. He made his debut as an opera director in 1999 with an open-air production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte. As an opera director he has worked together with renowned artists including Éva Marton, Erika Miklósa, Andrea Rost, José Cura, Leo Nucci, Yevgeny Nesterenko, Roberto Scandiuzzi, Joseph Calleja, Marcello Giordani, László Polgár, Ildikó Komlósi and Giuseppe Sabbatini with many of his productions being staged at the Hungarian State Opera and Millenáris Theatre. Together with the Orfeo Orchestra and the Purcell Choir he has staged numerous pre-Classical operas, including Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo which opened the Festival Theatre, also marking the start of opera performances at the Palace of Arts. In 2002, together with Oscar laureate director of photography Vilmos Zsigmondi, he produced the opera film Bánk bán which was a huge international success, prompting the critic of the Chicago Sun Times to write, “It's the most successful integration of opera and film ever”. His works have appeared at festivals in Europe, America and Asia. He has been artistic advisor to the Palace of Arts since 2005 and general manager of the Palace of Arts since March 2011.
GÉZA KOVÁCS
Géza Kovács began his career as a Chorus Master and Cultural Manager, organising national and international arts festivals. From 1989-95 he served as the Managing Director of Budapest MÁV Symphony Orchestra and thereafter, served as the Director General of the former Hungarian State Orchestra. In 1998 he was engaged at the National Philharmonic Orchestra Choir and Music Library. Since 1994, he has been President of the Association of Hungarian Orchestras and in 1998 he was named Vice-President of the Hungarian Music Council. He has been a member of the Performing Arts Employers’ Associations League Europe since 1996, and a member of the Executive Committee since 2000. He has been a member of ISPA since 2004 and member of the Board of Directors since 2008. He has lectured at various universities, directed documentary films for a multitude of TV channels, and has published essays and articles in Hungary and other countries. He is a passionate wine m aker and photographer.

CHRISTIAN MAY
Christian May, born in Munich, studied composition and conducting as well as International Law in Munich, Vienna and London. He worked as musical assistant and later as tour manager for various opera and orchestra tours. In 1991 he founded the concert agency MELOS KONZERTE in Vienna. The agency's focus is the general management of conductors and soloists, the organization of orchestra tours and recording projects. Since 2010 the agency has a subdivision dealing exclusively with film music recordings. Christian May is artistic advisor for a number of festivals and orchestras in Europe and South America. He also acted as jury member for competitions in Switzerland, Italy, Mexico and Portugal and has been on the jury of the MIDEM CLASSICAL Award. Christian May is member of the Board of Directors at the International Artists Managers’ Association – IAMA London.

THE NATIONAL CHILDREN’S ORCHESTRA MANAGING DIRECTOR Salary £65,000 - £70,000 plus benefits The National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain provides musically gifted young people from the ages of 7 to 13 with a world-class foundation for orchestral performance and musicianship and the opportunity to perform in some of the major concert halls in the UK and overseas. Pressure on subsidies and the absence or difficulty raising private money to counteract budget constraints and choices to either compromise or cut activity. Constituency meeting for chamber orchestras & choir managements Chamber orchestras form one of the largest blocks within IAMA's Affiliate membership. They are under great pressures due to the fact that many do not receive state funding and have to survive on touring and private sponsorship. Their musicians are loyal and enterprising and thus, their determination to survive the current climate is an example to many. Within the music canon, they fulfil an important niche role with size as one of their advantages. There are disadvantages too – touring has been very difficult. Panel Session III: 360 degree management or In-House Service: When is it appropriate? This session focuses on the debatable move by artist managements, recording companies and promoters bringing together service elements in-house. The 360 degree model has been tried, abandoned, mixed around and by some, rejected. Artist Managements have bought and sold PR businesses and promoters have embarked on their own media plans – some more successfully than others. Granted, business choices in music may not always involve commercial aims but, what are the values that matter today? What are realistic expectations and how do we manage these by way of communication to our audiences and the artists we serve? The Welsh flautist Emily Beynon plays flute concertos by Sir Lennox Berkeley, William Alwyn, and Jonathan Dove, as well as Berkeley’s orchestration of Francis Poulenc’s Flute Sonata. She is accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Bramwell Tovey.
The works presented here all survive in autograph scores. They are performed by Collegium Musicum 90 and Simon Standage, who in 2010 was awarded the Georg-Philipp-TelemannPreis in recognition of his contribution towards promoting the composer’s reputation.

Zoltán Kocsis started to play music at a very young age. His international career, though, began when at the age of eighteen he won the Beethoven Piano Competition of the Hungarian Radio. He appeared extensively in Europe, South and North America, as well as all major venues in the Far East. He has been a regular guest performer at major festivals, including Edinburgh, Paris, Tours, Luzern, La Roque d’Anthéron, Salzburg, Prague, Menton, Verbier, to name a few. As a performer he has worked under the baton of Claudio Abbado, Christoph von Dohnányi, Edo de Waart, Charles Mackerras, Lovro von Matac ˇic´, Charles Dutoit, Herbert Blomstedt, Michael Tilson Thomas and Lorin Maazel with leading orchestras the world such as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He has recorded with many leading labels including Hungaroton, Nippon Columbia, Phonogram, Quintana and Philips Classics. His most significant awards include an Edison and Gramophone Award. He was a founding member of the Budapest Festival Orchestra and has worked as chief musical director of the National Philharmonic Orchestra since the autumn of 1997. In addition to world-famous Hungarian and foreign soloists appearing at the National Philharmonic Orchestra’s season ticket concerts, the orchestra often introduces gifted young musicians. His programming reflects his commitment to presenting contemporary music and works by Hungarian composers. Zoltán Kocsis was artistic director of the critically acclaimed Bartók New Series project launched in December 2006, published by the Hungaroton Classic label. The series presented the entire oeuvre of the composer serving as a kind of critical edition of his complete works. Alongside conducting and playing the piano, its composition, orchestration and transcriptions that have also become synonymous with his name. A recent success was Arnold Schoenberg’s Moses and Aaron at the Palace of Arts in January 2010 when Kocsis wrote an entire third act for the unfinished opera on the basis of the text left by the composer. Kocsis frequently appears as a chamber musician; he is a regular guest at master classes and festivals; is an ordinary member of the Széchenyi Academy of Letters and Arts and together with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, he is UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador and ambassador of the Liszt Year.
James Brown was born in Yorkshire and studied the viola with Frederick Riddle at the Royal College of Music, during which time he won most of the major viola prizes, was Principal Viola of the RCM Symphony Orchestra and was Co-Principal Viola of the European Community Youth Orchestra. During a six-year career as a professional violist he was the youngest member successively of the BBC Philharmonic, BBC Radio and London Philharmonic orchestras. He founded Hazard Chase in 1990. From 1993-1999 he was a Partner of N.W. Brown and Company, Hazard Chase's parent organisation at that time. In October 1997 he was responsible for the acquisition by Hazard Chase of the business interests of Magenta Music International. In November 1999, as Managing Director, he led a management buy-out of Hazard Chase. In January 2010 he was appointed Chairman of Orchid Classics, the record label in which Hazard Chase is a shareholder. James represents Hazard Chase on the board of Ekkehard Jung Artists and Projects GmbH, the Berlinbased agency in which Hazard Chase is also a shareholder. He is a consultant to the Woodhouse Centre at the Royal College of Music and a member of the Association Européene des Agents Artistiques. He has been a speaker at numerous international conferences including Midem Classique, the Association of British Orchestras, the China Shanghai International Arts Festival Forum, the American Symphony Orchestra League and IAMA. James was elected to the IAMA board in 1998, elected as Deputy Chair 2000-2002 and Chairman from 2003-2005. In May 2007 he became an Honorary Member of the Royal College of Music.

Mr. Beˇlor was born into a musical family but studied and graduated (Dipl.-Ing.) in Economy and Management at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague (1977-1982). Between 1983 and 1990 he worked in techno-economic sector. In 1990 Mr. Beˇlor became the Orchestra Manager of the Prague Symphony Orchestra and two years later was appointed the Director of this institution, the position he held until 2001. He was a member of the Prague Spring Festival Committee between 1993 and 2001 and executed the duties of the Chairman of the Czech Symphony Orchestras Association between 1997 and 2001. He has been appointed the Director of the Prague Spring Festival in 2001 and became the vice Chairman of the Czech Association of Music Festivals in 2002. Mr. Beˇlor is a member of the Club for Old Prague (Klub Za starou Prahu) and an associated member of the Prague Mánes Fine Arts Society. He was awarded the Chevalier (1995) and the Officier (2001) de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture. He was a member of the team preparing the application of the City of Prague for becoming the European City of Culture in 2000. In 2003 Mr. Beˇlor participated in Brussels in the evaluation of the EU Culture 2000 projects. In April 2005 he was a Chairman of the Prague international conference of the IAMA (International Artist Managers´ Association). In 2010 Mr. Beˇlor was a member of the European City of Culture (ECOC) 2015 selection panel.
Was born in Sofia, Bulgaria and was educated as a musician and musicologist. His professional career included posts in senior management such as: Director, Music Production and Ensembles, Bulgarian National Radio; Member, Program Council of the BNR, Director of National Centre for Music and Dance, Ministry of Culture; Administrative Director of State Music Theatre, Sofia; Professor at the High Institute of Theatre and Music, Damascus and journalist and musical editor for more than 130 publications. Currently, Mr. Georgiev works as Head of Department in the Bulgarian National Radio. Within the broad scope of his public activities his appointments include: Secretary General, Bulgarian Association of Employers in Culture (BAROK), Program Manager, “Sofia Music Weeks” Festival; Chairman of the “Prof. Vladi Simeonov” Foundation; Consultant for various PHARE and EU programs, lecturer in Management of Performing Arts in the State Music Academy, New Bulgarian University, University for World and National Economics.
Péter Inkei is Director of Regional Observatory on Financing Culture in East-Central Europe (Budapest Cultural Observatory). He is a consultant in cultural policy – among others for Council of Europe, the European Commission and a frequent speaker at international conferences. He was previously a civil servant in Hungary, including Deputy State Secretary for Culture from 1996 to 1998. He has also worked as a publisher with CEU Press.

Benedikt Fohr is General Manager of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern (German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra) since 2007. Prior to that he was head of music of the Saarländischer Rundfunk and Manager of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken (SR) responsible for the merger of the orchestra and the Rundfunkorchester Kaiserslautern (SWR) to form the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie. The inaugural concerts were held in September 2007 in Kaiserslautern and Saarbrücken. From 2001 to 2006, he was General Director of the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra and from 1996 – 2001, General Secretary of the Camerata Salzburg. He studied business administration at the University of Mannheim and started his career as manager of the contemporary music ensemble “ensemble recherche Freiburg” (1989 – 1996).
Received a Master's Degree in Performing Arts from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1994. He was later educated at the Eötvös L. University of Budapest, Faculty of Humanities. He also holds a Master of Engineering from the Technical University of Budapest, and a Bachelor of Music from the F. Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He begun his career as a violin tutor and performer. Between 1994 and 1998, he worked as a manager of the Szeged Symphony Orchestra and Weiner Chamber Orchestra of Szeged. He held a position at the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica and was a member of Solti Chamber Orchestra and Eisenstadter Sommerakademie, Austria. He is presently a member of the Somogyi string quartet. As a manager and producer his accomplishments include the Festival in Szeged and the Tibor Varga Festival – Budapest. In 2000, he visited various US orchestras during a US International Visitor study program. He has been the CEO of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra of Budapest since 2005.
Christian Scheib holds the position of Artistic Director of the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Vienna having previously worked as musicologist, radio-editor and new music producer of the Austrian national radio station Ö1. He was formally Program Director of the new music festival “musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst” and held the post of Head of the Ö1 music department until 2011. From 1993 to 1996, he was music curator for the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts following which he was appointed guest lecturer in 1998 at the Department of Critical Studies at the California Institute of the Arts. He was also lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna. As a scriptwriter, he has written many music documentaries for European television stations and has been accredited as publications editor of Das Rauschen (”static’s music”; 1995), Übertragung – Transfer – Metapher. Kulturtechniken, ihre Versionen und Obsessionen (2004) and author, together with Susanna Niedermayr, of “In the East – New Music Territories” (2002/2004).

A former chorister at Magdalen College, Oxford, John qualified as a Chartered Accountant, went on to read music at Edinburgh University and has a diploma in piano from the Royal Academy of Music of which he is also an Honorary Associate. In the 70's and early 80's he was a classical producer for EMI working with many top artists including Muti, Argerich, Kremer, Gavrilov, Domingo, Levine, Ozawa, David Munrow, Rattle and Tennstedt. In 1985 he became managing director of the London Philharmonic. During his tenure, the orchestra won the sole residency of the Festival Hall and attracted the best line up of international conductors a London orchestra had seen for decades. In 1995 the BBC approached him to build a music division for its commercial subsidiary, BBC Worldwide. Within three years he had established BBC Music Publishing and the BBC Legends label building a top line income of £6.5 million. John left the BBC in 1999 having joined the board of the Cambridge based music agency, Hazard Chase. He was chairman from 2000 until August 2011. On 1 January 2006 he was appointed chairman of the International Artist Managers' Association and in September 2009 was made a governor of the Royal Academy of Music. More recently he has been appointed Chairman of the Two Moors Festival.
As a certified specialist in Information Technology Law, Dr. Kaboth advises companies that provide IT services as well as companies that use IT services with regard to development-, project-, license-, distribution-, and outsourcing contracts. In the field of Internet & E-Business his advice extends to internet platforms und E-Business companies which offer content and/or distribute goods. Furthermore, he advises companies in the IT sector as well as other industries in all data protection related issues. Dr. Kaboth also is a Certified Specialist in Copyright & Media Law. In this area, his consulting focuses include contractual work for publishing houses, producers, concert, advertising and picture agencies, orchestras and theatres. Furthermore, he advises media companies, agencies and companies from different industries in all press related and advertising issues. Finally, Dr. Kaboth represents his clients and acts on behalf of them in regular court proceedings including fast track proceedings as well as in national and international ad-hoc and institutional arbitration proceedings. He is a member of GRUR (Vereinigung Gewerblicher Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht – German Industrial Property and Copyright Law Association); Licensing Executives Society (LES); German-American Lawyers Association (DAJV); German-Argentinean Lawyers Association.
Is an Attorney at Law (Germany), admitted at the European Trade Mark Office, Partner, Berlin. He studied law at the Free University of Berlin and at the Philipps University of Marburg. After working for almost three years in the legal department of BASF AG, he moved to the then Polygram GmbH (today Universal Music) where he held executive positions in succession in the firms Phonogram, Polydor International and Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft. In 1998, he left Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft as Executive Vice President and Deputy Managing Director in order to devote himself completely to the legal profession. His practice in the area of copyright and labour law is focused on the field of performance, production and exploitation of classical music where he counsels and represents artists, agencies, organizers and producers of phonograms at an international level. He also has significant experience in the area of stage contract law.

Gabriele Schiller is the owner of the agency PR² classic. Born in Belgrade, she grew up in Moscow, Bremen, and Washington where she attended the German School. She studied musicology, piano and organ at the American University in Washington D.C. from 1979 and from 1982 at the Music Academy in Detmold, as well as American Studies at the University of Paderborn. Between 1988 and 1991 she worked at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, as an artist manager at Concerto Winderstein Concerts in Munich, and at Rafael Concerts, where she was responsible for the guest performance of the Arena di Verona’s “Turandot” in Tokyo, among others. In 1992, Gabriele Schiller founded the agency PR ² classic in Cologne that takes over national and international public relations and artists management for classical musicians, orchestras and festivals. She is representing artists such as Kent Nagano, Leonidas Kavakos, Midori, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jan Vogler, Herbert Blomstedt, the Dresden Music Festival and the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. Her company is a member of the International Artist Managers' Association (IAMA), and of the Association of German Concert agencies VDKD.
Maren Borchers began her career as an Ensemble member at the Hamburg State Opera, the Theater des Westens in Berlin, and Schauspielhaus in Cologne while studying Cultural Sciences at the University of Lüneburg, Germany. From 1996 to 1998, she was appointed Press Officer at Stella AG, Hamburg before working as Manager, Press Work and Promotion at EMI Classics in Cologne until 2005 when she founded her own company, Maren Borchers, for artists, based in Berlin. She offers consultancy, PR and promotion for classical musicians and advises and supports international artists, ensembles and orchestras in the creation of their own unique profile in the German media landscape. Support also includes the overall design in the areas of conceptualisation, production, marketing and sales of CDs, concerts and events.
Andy Saunders has worked at a senior level within the UK music industry for almost 25 years. Beginning his career packing records for an independent distributor in a cold north London warehouse Andy progressed to work for Acid House pioneers Pacific Records before leaving to run the export and licensing department at classical music specialists Conifer Records. In the late 1980’s he ran a number of labels for heavy metal giants Roadrunner Records, working with artists such as Sepultura, Obituary and Deicide, before joining the legendary Creation Records as Director of Communications, where he spent a decade where he helped oversee worldwide sales of over 50 million albums from artists such as Oasis, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Teenage Fanclub and many others. Born in London sometime back in the last century, John’s interest in choral music began at the age of 9 when he became a chorister at Westminster Abbey. Having read English at Queens’ College, Cambridge, a career in arts administration led from the London Opera Centre to the setting up of his own music agency, Magenta Music International, which specialised in early and contemporary music, with clients including The Hilliard Ensemble. It was here that he first encountered Harry Christophers and The Sixteen, and for the next 25 years acted firstly as artist manager and then as a trustee. After selling his business to Hazard Chase in Cambridge, and working there for several years, he was then Development Director for Britten Sinfonia. Stepping down as a trustee of The Sixteen in 2008 to act as maternity cover for the General Manager, John stayed on as Development Director, and is now once again doing maternity cover for the Chief Executive. He is a director of The Sixteen’s own recording label CORO. He has remained closely in touch with the world of artist management and is an Honorary Lifetime member of the International Artist Managers’ Association. He is a trustee of Wysing Arts Centre and Cambridge Early Music. Ski-ing is his main non-music obsession, followed by travel, especially in South America and Asia.
Fond of music since his early years, Günther Obwexer sang in several choirs as a child. After graduating with a degree in economics at the University Luigi Bocconi in Milan, he began working for Alessandra Abbado at Ferrara Musica, followed by other concert and opera agencies. In 1997, together with a business partner, he founded in Milan his own agency which specialises in placing opera singers internationally.
Marco Tutino debuted as a composer in 1976 by participating in the Festival Gadeamus in Holland. Since then his work has been performed in many festivals and seasons including that of Vienna, Genoa, Verona, Livorno, Bologna, Ancona, La Scala, Milan, Rome Opera, Modena, Venice, Rovigo, Treviso, Palermo, Erfurt, (Germany) and Opera de Metz, France. More recently has taken the subject from the play The Servant by Robin Maugham, which debuted in 2008 under the direction of Gabriele Lavia, earning him critical acclaim. In 2008 the opera house in Ostrava (Czech Republic) presented his La Lupa, which is restaged with great success and Vita in 2009 which debuted in Szeged after the premiere at the Teatro all a Scala in 2003. In January 2011, the Teatro Massimo of Palermo opened its season with a commission entitled: Senso, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. In parallel with his artistic career, he held positions of management including Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia, Artistic Director of Musical Afternoons in Milan, artistic advisor and composer in residence at Fondazione Arena di Verona where FUTURE, a festival dedicated to musical theatre for the younger generation was established. In 2002 he was appointed Artistic Director, Teatro Regio, Turin and in 2006 to 2011 served as general manager and artistic director of the Teatro Comunale of Bologna. During this time, he also served as President dell’Anfols, the association of all Italian opera foundations.

Born in Sheffield, Ben Pateman was educated in England, Australia and Scotland, before attending the Guildhall School of Music in London. After working as a freelance flautist and as a professor at the London College of Music, he joined Decca Classics in 1980, occupying many positions before leaving the company as A&R Executive Producer and Director of DVD in 2012. He is currently Executive Producer for the audio-video label Opus Arte, a Board Member of the IMZ, and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Musicians. He continues to perform in various London ensembles.

Martin Hoffmann was born in Nussloch, near Heidelberg, and studied law at the Universities of Saarbrücken, Lausanne and Hamburg, completing his studies with the bar examination in 1991. He was a Research Fellow until 1993 at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law and practiced law in Hamburg. In 1994 Martin Hoffmann became Director of the Sat. 1 Management Office and in the same year head of Sat. 1 Business Affairs – Programming. He became Managing Director of Sat. 1 Boulevard TV GmbH in 1997 and subsequently Managing Director of Sat. 1 Satellite Television GmbH until 2003. From 2004 to 2010 he was Chief Executive Officer of the television production company MME MOVIEMENT AG. In September 2010 he took on the role of Managing Director of the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation.
After leaving Cambridge University, Stephen Wright co-founded the Oxford and Cambridge Shakespeare Company before setting up the European office of an American concert management agency, Shawconcerts Ltd. In 1975 he joined Harold Holt Ltd, later becoming Joint Managing Director. In 1991 he left Harold Holt to create, and set up, IMG Artists Europe of which he became Senior International Vice President and Managing Director. As well as managing artists and touring orchestras, Stephen Wright was also responsible for the opening of further IMG Artists offices in Paris and Kuala Lumpur, the latter centred on the creation of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and the opening of the Dewan Philharmonic Hall. In 1995 he took on the role of Managing Director of IMG Artists Europe and established a new international audio/visual arm producing a number of films that were broadcast worldwide on TV andissued on VHS and DVD. Amongst these were The Art of Conducting", "The Art of Singing" “The Art of Piano” “The Art of Chopin” and “A Portrait of Arturo Toscanini”. Another major joint venture with the BBC, to issue on CD the greatest performances of the past extant in their audio archive, saw the creation of the BBC Legends label. In collaboration with EMI, IMG Artists also issued CD portraits of the great conductors of the 20th century in addition to a major collection of television programmes/DVDs called Classic Archive. In 2005, he became a freelance arts consultant before becoming owner and chairman of Van Walsum Management Ltd (2008), which in October 2010 was re-launched as International Classical Artists Limited. Recently, the company launched its own DVD and CD label – ICA Classics, using historic material including the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s television archives being released for the first time, as well as audio and audio-visual projects with ICA’s artists.

Simon Wall is Director of TallWall Media, which provides film, photography and design services to the arts sector. Created together with former vocal manager, Hannah Taylor, and launched in November 2011, the company addresses the growing appetite and necessity for digital promotional tools. TallWall Media brings both technical expertise and an in depth understanding of the context in which their clients operate. Recent projects have included those with the Classical Opera Company and Linn Records, The King's Singers, leading cabaret specialist Mary Carewe and Orchid Classics, pianist and broadcaster, Iain Burnside, cellist Sung-Won Yang, Chetham's School of Music, and many emerging artists such as tenor Anthony Gregory, soprano Elizabeth Llewellyn and YCAT pianist Alexandra Dariescu. Simon studied Music Technology at Kingston University. Following two years in Reading developing the marketing of the International Symphonic and Recital Series, Simon joined Intermusica, going on to become the agency’s Marketing Manager. For over six years Intermusica held a sector-leading reputation for the quality and creativity of its promotional resources across print, website and through a number of ‘agency firsts’ with the development of in-house podcasting and film services. Whilst at Intermusica, Simon produced films with artists including Valery Gergiev, Riccardo Chailly, James MacMillan and Steve Reich; with orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchester and BBC Philharmonic; and profiles of HK Gruber and Colin Currie, to name a few.

She studied for a further university diploma in foreign affairs journalism receiving a Humphrey Fellowship in the early 1990s at the Faculty of Public Communications of Syracuse University, Upstate New York specialising in television journalism, campaign theory and cultural management. Through her career she worked as a tv – radio reporter, talent, print media journalist, later as a creative producer and communication consultant in Austria, Germany, Hungary and in the United States (Boston, MA). Since 1997 she’s been active as a PR and communication consultant. Her co-owned company, Image Factory has specialised in social media projects, the communication of cultural institutions and settlement branding. She founded and managed the first private "Classic FM" radio in Budapest. Some of her major Hungarian communications tasks include projects like Hungary's accession to NATO and the European Union, crisis communication activities during the Balkans wars on behalf of NATO, participation in the 2004 and 2009 European parliamentary election campaigns, brand building of Hungary’s major auction house: Virag Judit Gallery etc. Her company, Image Factory is proud to work with clients a. o. like the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Municipality of Debrecen, Hungarian Intellectual Property Office, Central European University, European Parliament, UN-Women, Virag Judit Auctionhouse and Gallery, Bauhaus Warehouse, Kellogg’s, Pfizer Hungary. The company has won the coveted PRizma prize twice (2010 & 2011).
After gaining his initial digital experience at the University of California, San Francisco in the early 1990s, Jonathan King resettled in London in 1998, joining the BBC in the early days of its digital expansion. He spent eight years as a producer for BBC Audio and Music Interactive with a particular focus on developing audience interaction. Whilst with Radio 3, Radio 2, and 6 Music, he worked on a number of high-profile projects such as early development of the BBC Radio Player and led in-house style and social media developments for 6 Music’s distinctive Hub Sessions. He was Senior Digital Media Producer at the Royal Opera House for three years from 2008, where he oversaw content development for the ROH website, multiple specialist websites, apps and in-house signage. Jonathan joined ENO as Digital Producer in August 2011. Based in the learning and participation team, ENO Baylis, he works across many departments and projects that aim to broaden reach, access and participation via new technologies and develop new audiences.

ISM’s tips for self-employed musicians Written contracts for all your work This makes it is absolutely clear what terms were agreed if a dispute should arise. Your contract should be with the person or organisation who will be paying you. Include cancellation or termination provisions This means you will receive a cancellation fee if a performance is cancelled and fees in lieu if a student stops lessons without giving you proper notice. Know your worth in the marketplace Be prepared to negotiate for a higher fee if the fee being offered is below the going market rate. Take account of all your related expenses It is probably not worth accepting an engagement if the fee offered barely covers your costs of travelling to it. It’s worth asking for travel expenses to be reimbursed. Look carefully at all your expenditure Shop around for the cheapest mobile phone contract and electricity supplier. Use your credit cards wisely It is best to avoid charging to your cards more than you can afford to repay each month. If you find yourself unable to clear the sum outstanding, you might consider transferring the balance to another card offering to charge zero interest on transferred balances. Self-employed are eligible for working tax credit If you work 30 or more hours per week and your income is sufficiently low. Musicians should include in their working hours total not only the time they spend performing and teaching but also time sent in rehearsal, private practice time, other preparation, administration and marketing etc. Contact the ISM We can help you recover unpaid fees and support you in other work-related legal disputes. John Seeley Step up your promotional activities You should be investing your time and money in costeffective ways to promote yourself. If competitors think promotion is not worth doing at this time, then that means less competition for you. Don’t confuse price with cost Paying more for something you get a far lower cost because the value – the benefit to you – is higher. The reverse can apply – you cut the price you pay, the value which you get (the cost) can increase. Review your borrowing Are you borrowing at unnecessarily high rates? Can you increase your loan repayments Paying more than the minimum payment on your credit card will save you a significant amount of money and you’ll end up with much more money in your pocket. Do a personal budget Analyse your personal spending, calculate how much you need to reduce your personal spending by and then construct a budget. Manage the tax! Leaving your tax affairs to the last minute will not only increase the risk of aninvestigation by HMRC, but you’re more likely to incur interest, surcharges and possible penalties. Cutting spending works only in the short-term To make spending cuts effective you have to first change the way you live or work to make the effect of those spending reductions effective in the long run. Sean Shibe
Born 1992 in Scotland, guitarist Sean Shibe is already in demand on the festival and concert venue circuits and has won many prizes, distinctions and scholarships. He is currently studying with Allan Neave at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, having been the youngest ever musician to enter the establishment when he was 15. He has appeared at Dundee Guitar Festival, the Big Guitar Weekend and Ullapool Guitar Festival. Further solo and concerto performances have taken him around the United Kingdom, China, Holland, Germany and Liechtenstein, with radio broadcasts on the BBC and European television and radio. Sean Shibe’s regular collaboration with composers has received consistent critical acclaim, and he has so far premiered seven new works. These include a reworking of Jacob's Ladder by Halfidi Hallgrimsson (Icelandic Symphony Orchestra composer-in-residence) and Marek Pascienczny's Sequenza for guitar solo. His various accolades and awards include 1st prize in the Ivor Mairants Guitar Award (2009), 2nd prize in the Liechtenstein International Guitar Competition (2009) and the 2011 Royal Over-Seas League's 1st prize and gold medal. A highlight of 2012 will be a Wigmore Hall debut. Sean Shibe received a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship in February 2012. Whether in recital, chamber music or as a soloist with orchestra, her virtuosic and spirited performance leaves no one untouched. Her journey into music began at the age of 9 years. Since then it has been her passion and won her over 14 competitions, among them First prize in All-Soviet Union Competition “Young Virtuoso” (1991, Kiev), winner of the Estonian Yamaha Competition (1999), First prize in the Johann Sebastian Bach Competition of the Estonian Music Academy and Sibelius Academy, Finland (1998), Grand Prix in the Estonian Johann Sebastian Bach Competition (2000), 4. prize in the International Competition PACEM IN TERRIS (2005, Bayreuth, Germany) . In 2008 the young flautist won the First prize and most of the special awards in the Estonian National Competition for Wind Interpreters and the same year she was awarded the PLMF award “Young Musician 2008”. After achieving her Bachelor degree (cum laude) in 2002 and Master degree (cum laude) in 2006 from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (class of N. Punder and Prof. M. Helin, SibeliusAcademy, Finland) she is currently pursuing her PhD. From 20042005 she studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg in the class of Prof. M.A. Epstein. She has participated in the master classes of several well-known flutists (G. Blasco, G. Marcossi, B. Giesler, H. Starreveld, L. Ruoho, M. Helin, J.-C. Gerard, R. GreissArmin, P. Gallois, M. Järvi, P.-L. Graf, W. Bennett and J. Frank) Oksana has worked in professional symphony orchestras in Estonia from 2000-2011 (mostly as Principal/Solo flutist), alongside pursuing her solo career and teaching (since 2008 at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre). She also gives master-classes and performs numerous recitals and chamber music concerts with different ensembles in Estonia and abroad. Her recital repertoire includes many virtuoso violin pieces for flute.

First Prize winner of the 8th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition Following his first musical training at music schools in Kiev and Kharkov, Vitaly Pisarenko commenced his study at the State Conservatory in Moscow under Prof. Yuri Slesarev in 2005. At the same time, he enrolled in a post academic course of study at Rotterdam’s Codarts Conservatory, as a pupil of Aquiles Delle Vigne. Since November 2009 he was a student of Oxana Yablonskaya in Oxana Yablonskaya Piano Institute and has appeared as soloist with orchestras in Ukraine, Russia, Italy, the Republic of Macedonia, Austria and Germany. On 12 April 2008, he won first prize at the 8th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Utrecht, the Netherlands which initiated a busy touring schedule. Some of the engagements included Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra in Budapest, Basilica Festival of Flanders, the Berlin International Music Festival & Academy, the Delft Chamber Music Festival, the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam, Busoni Festival in Bolzano, Beethoven Festival in Warsaw, Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Virtuoses da Música in São Paulo, Punta Arenas in Chile and in Argentina the Ushuaia Festival. In May 2009, he made an international tour with the Heath Quartet, winners of the TROMP International Music Competition 2008. In 2010 he also performed in Shanghai during the World EXPO and he toured with the Gelders Orkest, performing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 4.
Focus on the orchestras featured at the conference: Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra Since the autumn of 1997 Zoltán Kocsis has been chief musical director of the Orchestra. Attesting to the significance, mission and performance of the Orchestra, in the Ministry of National Cultural Heritage declared it, together with the National Choir, an outstanding national institution.
In recent years the Orchestra has received numerous invitations abroad. Since 1997 it has given some 100 concerts in 40 countries, from Avery Fisher Hall in New York, Suntory Hall in Tokyo to the Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Megaron Musicos in Athens and the Canary Island Festival. The critics of the prestigious online musical review ConcertoNet presented the Orchestra the Lully Award for the best concert of the season for its New York concert in February 2003. In 2011 they appeared in Brussels at the Bozar Centre and in the Vatican, performing to Pope Benedict XVI. In February the Orchestra went on a long tour of Germany. They were guests of honour at the Cracow Mahler Festival. In the summer they appeared in Potsdam, in the autumn in Romania and France, together with Vadim Repin and Boris Berezovsky. The season ticket concerts of the Orchestra are highly successful, and every year they perform successfully with internationally acclaimed soloists or conductors including Ingrid Fliter, Michail Jurowski, Leonid Kuzmin, Alexei Volodin, Michail Agrest, Howard Williams, Gilbert Varga, Segei Nakarjakov, Jörg Widman, Wolfgang Schöne, Andrea Rost, Gidon Kremer, Sergei Krylov, Vadim Repin, Natalia Gutman, Gábor Boldoczki and Kristóf Baráti. In the spring of 2003 they produced a CD containing Zoltán Kocsis’s orchestrations of works by Debussy and Ravel, which was the first recording of the renewed National Symphony Orchestra and which instantly won the “Best Hungarian Classical Album of the Year” Award, founded by the critics of the Hungarian musical review Gramofon. Published in February 2004, their second album featured three works by Bartók – Concerto, the Dance Suite and Hungarian Peasant Songs. The recording received numerous awards at home and abroad, including the MIDEM in Cannes, presented to the best classical orchestral recording of the year. Zoltán Kocsis was artistic director of Bartók New Series project, a new edition of the complete works of Bartók, launched in December 2006 and published by the Hungaroton Classic label. The recordings have received wide critical acclaim in Hungary and internationally. The second instalment in the Bartók New Series (Kossuth Symphony, The Wooden Prince) won another MIDEM Classic Award. The other albums in the series have been unequivocally successful. Outstandingly, 23 critics of the BBC Music Magazine voted No. 10 in the Bartók New Series (Music for Strings, Percussion and Cenesta, Divertimento, Hungarian Sketches) as "Record of the Month”. Most recently, No. 9 in the Bartók New Series (Violin Concerto, Violin Rhapsodies) received the German Critics Award in 2011. This album was also a nominee for the International Music Award.
Showcase: 19 April, Ceremonial Hall, Hungarian Academy of Sciences MAV Symphony Orchestra (MAVSO) Gábor Takács-Nagy – Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Gergely Kesselyák – Conductor Rodrigo De Carvalho – Permanent Guest Conductor The MAV Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1945 by the Hungarian State Railways, one of the most significant companies in Hungary. The orchestra currently consists of ninety professional musicians and is rated among the best professional orchestras in Hungary. In recent decades the orchestra has developed a wide-ranging repertoire from music of the Baroque era to works by contemporary composers. It presents its subscription concerts in the most respected concert halls of Hungary: the Liszt Music Academy and the Palace of Arts. Each year the MAVSO participates in one of the most renowned artistic festivals in Europe, the Budapest Spring Festival. Throughout its history, the orchestra has established close connections with famous Hungarian and internationally-renowned

Péter Csaba – conductor / violinist Péter Csaba studied violin, composing and conducting in Bucharest at C. Porumbescu Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Peter Zsurka and George Manoliu for violin, Ede Terényi for composing and conducting. He was prize-winner of several national and international competitions including the Niccolo Paganini in Genoa. His international career began with several intensive tours in Europe and in Asia including several recordings for radio, television and international record companies. He has lived in France since 1983, and became a professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique (CNSMD) in Lyon, super-soloist at the Lyon Opera House and the Orchestre National de Lyon, orchestras he often conducted. From 1995 until 2010, he was the Artistic Director of the Besançon Symphony Orchestra (France). From 1993 to 2002, Péter Csaba was Artistic Director and Chief Conductor in Sweden of the Musica Vitae Chamber Orchestra and Artistic Leader of the Euro Musica Vitae Festival which he created for European young talents. In 1986, he founded the Virtuosi di Kuhmo chamber orchestra in Finland. Several recordings and concert tours testify to this dynamic artistic period. He also acted as Artistic Director of the Lapland Festpiel (Sweden) and in 2000 as Artistic Director of the Kuhmo Festival in Finland. He was director of the Maurice Ravel Academy in Saint-Jean de Luz (France) and since 2001 he is Artistic Director of Encuentro de Musica y Academia in Santander (Spain), allowing him to provide a wonderful opportunity for young musicians to meet and perform together with world famous artists in more than 60 concerts. For his remarquable contribution to the development of Swedish musical life and for the quality of his artistic work with the Musica Vitae Orchestra, he was unanimously elected in 2002 a member of the Royal Academy of Sweden and received the prestigious Spelmanen Prize. Péter Csaba has recorded for Ondine, Hungaroton, Bis, Praga, Harmonia Mundi, Caprice and other companies. His CD with works by Sibelius, recorded with the Virtuosi di Kuhmo, was chosen by the American Public Radio as the best classical record of 1995 in the USA. His recording of Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony is considered by musical critics as one of the best ever made of this piece.

On March 25, 2011, the MAV Symphony Orchestra was awarded one of the most respected and prestigious Hungarian artistic prizes, the Bartók-Pásztory Award.
An artist with a winning combination of superb musicianship, personal verve, and riveting technical brilliance, pianist Xiayin Wang conquers the hearts of audiences wherever she appears. As recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestral soloist in such venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, she has already achieved a high level of recognition for her commanding performances. Reviewing Ms. Wang’s appearance with the Fine Arts Quartet at Alice Tully Hall in New York in November 2010, Allan Kozinn of The New York Times praised Ms. Wang’s “nuanced, spirited, crisply articulated and assertive readings.” Ms. Wang’s upcoming engagements include appearances with the Fine Arts Quartet in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Music in the Mountains Festival, California; Idaho State Civic Symphony; and the Santa Barbara Symphony, California. She will appear in recital in San Juan, Puerto Rico and at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall this fall and will be touring in September 2013 with the Lithuanian Orchestra to Vilnius, Warsaw, and Berlin. Ms. Wang has six recordings to her credit. In spring 2011, Naxos released a critically lauded CD of Richard Danielpour’s “The Enchanted Garden,” Preludes Books I and II following a world premiere performance Ms. Wang gave of Book II at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. In the fall of 2010, Ms. Wang released a highly praised recording of the piano music of Earl Wild, including his celebrated Gershwin arrangements, on Chandos. In a review of this CD for Fanfare, Scott Noriega wrote that Ms. Wang played “with such assuredness, such delicacy, that one forgets the difficulties inherent in the performance, and is left breathless in musical awe.” Ms. Wang is scheduled to record George Gershwin’s Concerto in F with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and works by Barber and Copland during February and April 2013. Recently, Ms. Wang toured with the St. Petersburg Symphony performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in St. Petersburg, Russia as well as in the United States in Houston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston, Washington D.C. and at Alice Tully Hall in New York. She made her London debut at Cadogan Hall in September 2011 and was heard in Haifa and Tel Aviv with the Israel Chamber Orchestra this past December.
