upu means to sprout, and lau means leaf. So, the season of new growth in Hawai‘i’s lush landscape is known as Kupulau. For most malihini or visitors to our islands, the mild variations from season to season in the middle of the Pacific Ocean are barely noticeable in contrast with continental climes that range from summer droughts to winter blizzards. With snowfall primarily on the summits of Hawai‘i Island’s Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa (and, occasionally, on Maui’s Haleakalā), that element was virtually unknown to most Hawaiians in the days of old. However, subtle variations in makani (winds), ua (rains) and degrees of anu (cold) are often woven into Hawaiian poetry. Contrasting mehana (warmth) may allude to affection. “Aia i ke anu, anu o Kōke‘e, ho‘opumehana i ka pili me ‘oe.” (There in the cold of Kōke‘e (on Kaua‘i), I was warmed in your embrace.) The elements are personified in this song and translation.

Wai or fresh water is the embodiment of Kāne, giver of life, one of four primary deities in the traditional ho‘omana or religion of Hawai‘i. In a classic mele or poem titled “Ka Wai a Kāne,” a question is repeatedly asked: Aia i hea ka wai a Kāne? Where is the water of Kāne? In six stanzas, the answers reveal that Kāne’s waters are found everywhere from the rising sun at Ha‘eha‘e to its setting at Lehua, in the valleys, streams, ocean, clouds, rainbows and springs. In summary, this classic mele affirms that the water of Kāne—fresh water, vital to man’s existence—can be found everywhere. Directly inland of Waikīkī is the valley of Mānoa, whose misty rain is named “Tuahine,” meaning sister in Hawaiian. This relates to the legend of Kahalaopuna, rainbow princess of Mānoa. To the south is Pālolo valley whose rain is named Līlīlehua for a variety of kalo or taro. Pōpōkapa is a rain name shared by Nu‘uanu and Kalihi valleys north of Mānoa. When freshly pounded kapa (bark cloth) was laid out to dry in the sun and sudden showers

arrived, folks would pōpō or bundle the cloth and take it indoors until the sun reappeared to bring warmth to the day. The rain in Hilo on Hawai‘i Island describes the kani (sound) of raindrops falling on the ‘ōhi‘a lehua —ka ua Kanilehua. Further north on that island is Waimea, home to Parker Ranch. The famous rain of that vast district is Kīpu‘upu‘u, an icy forest rain that causes pu‘upu‘u (goose bumps) on the skin. Besides the scores of proper rain names from throughout the islands, general descriptions are used widely in Hawaiian poetry. Ua noe, ua li‘ili‘i and ua kilihune describe misty rain. Ua loku and ua nui describe pouring or heavy rain. Ua līhau, misty rain in the morning, is considered a good luck omen for fishermen. flowers bloom year-round. One of the most symbolic pua (flowers) in the Hawaiian landscape is the lehua, the blossom of the ‘ōhi‘a tree, sacred to the volcano goddess, Pele‘aihonuamea. The young leaf buds of the ‘ōhi‘a lehua are commonly referred to as liko lehua and range in color from pink to deep burgundy. Liko means leaf bud, and is synonymous with mu‘o. A flower bud is ‘ōpu‘u, and mōhala or mōhalahala means to unfold, as flower petals. Dancers sometimes wear lei of lehua and likolehua in tribute to another goddess, Laka, primary deity of the hula. Hawai‘i’s profusion of flowers inspired poet Don Blanding to dub the first of May (known to much of the world as May Day) as Lei Day. Prior to that 1927 designation, the territorial legislature codified official lei to represent each of the eight major Hawaiian islands. Scarlet lehua for Hawai‘i, the introduced cottage rose for Maui, kukui for Moloka‘i, kauna‘oa for Lāna‘i, hinahina for Kaho‘olawe, golden ‘ilima for O‘ahu, pungent mokihana berries for Kaua‘i, and the prized pūpū o Ni‘ihau shells for the private island of Ni‘ihau. What contributes to Hawai‘i’s designation as one of the most beautiful places on Earth is the delicate balance of rain, sunshine, gentle tradewinds and fertile, volcanic soil. Another term for spring (besides Kupulau) is ke kau o makalapua, the season of blossoming forth. Visit the Hawaiian language online dictionaries at Ulukau.org. When you look up makalapua, you’ll find this descriptive phrase: Nani ho‘i nā lau nahele e ‘ōmaka ana, e mōhala ana a e makalapua ana. Beautiful indeed are the budding plants, opening and blossoming. All of this Hawaiian beauty, inspired by the waters of Kāne.

he Royal Grove at Royal Hawaiian Center is more than a beautiful garden—it is the cultural and spiritual piko (center) of this property, known for generations as “Helumoa.” Once home to ali‘i (nobility), Helumoa was an expansive ulu niu (coconut grove) where 10,000 trees grew. In breathing new life into this ‘āina (land) and re-establishing a Hawaiian sense of place, the Royal Grove has become an icon—an inviting oasis in the heart of Waikīkī. Dozens of coconut trees now shade the area, and an array of native Hawaiian flora (right) provides an elegant green backdrop for cultural performances and classes. Above The Grove is the Kahalaopuna Bridge, named for the princess of Mānoa Valley, inland of Waikīkī. Kahalaopuna’s beauty was likened to an ānuenue (rainbow).

Royal Hawaiian Center is owned by Kamehameha Schools, established in 1884 by the will of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. In her honor, Ka ‘Ikena Ho‘oulu a Pauahi (the inspired vision of Pauahi) was created by Kamehameha graduate Sean K.K.L. Browne. The bronze statue (left) illustrates Princess Pauahi’s love for keiki (children). The Kaulani

The Royal Grove is a serene place of great natural beauty and cultural significance. Cups of Kona pure HAWAIIAN coffee

©shutterstock

W

orld-famous Kona coffee is a prized and remarkable Hawaiian crop. On Hawai‘i, the Big Island, the narrow “coffee belt” is in the Kona district. There, on the slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa volcanoes, coffee plants luxuriate in perfect growing conditions: volcanic soil, warm weather and many dedicated farmers upholding a centuries-old legacy. The coffee is supremely rich in flavor and aroma. So distinctive are these beans that, in order to be labeled “Kona coffee” they must be at least 10 percent pure Kona. (Though purists insist one-tenth is not nearly enough.) Today many of Kona’s coffee farms give tours, and even large coffee house chains are riding the wave of its appeal. Island Vintage Coffee carries 100-percent, unadulterated, locally roasted Kona beans. Its Peaberry is robust, made from prized coffee cherries (known as peaberries) that make up just one-twentieth of a typical coffee harvest. The shops also offer flavored pure Kona roasts such as mellow Vanilla Mac Nut and nutty Coconut Cream, as well as chocolate-covered beans and gift baskets. At islandwide Starbucks locations, you can find packaged 100-percent Kona coffee, which is a fantastic gift or souvenir.

BEIJING CHINESE SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

You’re on a roll. So far you’ve scored perfect new sandals, earrings and a hand-printed scarf for après-beach cocktails, plus Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day gifts and plenty of souvenirs to bring home. Take a break and enjoy a meal at Royal Hawaiian Center. Elegant Japanese One of Waikīkī’s best-kept secrets is the lunch special at Restaurant Suntory. It’s well-known for its all-around excellence in Japanese cuisine in varying styles— teppanyaki, sushi, shabu-shabu and kaiseki meals. At lunchtime, diners can get seriously high-quality food for under $20. Try the maguro natto donburi, with fresh tuna sashimi over a bowl of sushi rice, or a bowl of noodles with assorted tempura. There are 29 lunch specials for $20 or under here, and they all come with an appetizer, steamed rice and miso soup.

“Steak” Your Claim Big appetites are welcome, but not required, at Wolfgang’s Steakhouse by Wolfgang Zwiener. Zwiener, who trained for four decades under the wing of legendary Brooklyn steak house star Peter Luger, has brought New York City to Waikīkī. Special occasions become extraordinary—and ordinary meals special—when you add USDA prime steak, dry-aged on the premises, and a fine vintage from Wolfgang’s wine list, recently lauded by Wine Spectator. Relax in this charming, old-world ambience with an island touch.

P.F. CHANG’S

FIVE STAR INTERNATIONAL BUFFET

Friendly and Fun P.F. Chang’s Waikīkī is more popular than ever, and it’s easy to see why: most menu items are made to share, such as Chang’s signature Chicken Lettuce Wraps—spicy and savory chopped chicken with nuts and herbs, served with cold and crispy iceberg 60

lettuce leaves. Also, try Chang’s golden brown snow crab and cream cheese wontons, crispy on the outside and mild on the inside. Around the World on a Plate A wide array of local, regional and international culinary delights fill this upscale space, the newest restaurant at the Center. Unlike a typical buffet, Five Star International Buffet has a sophisticated décor, signature cocktails, attentive service and other unexpected fine-dining touches. Executive Chef Kogi Oishi recently added crab and lobster preparations to the already extensive continental menu of buffet options. This an excellent choice any time of day: lunch, dinner, happy hour or Sunday brunch.

DORAKU

Terrific Teppanyaki Meals at Okonomiyaki Chibo come with built-in entertainment. Teppan chefs slice, dice, and expertly toss the freshest of ingredients around on the flat-top grill right in front of you. Seared ‘ahi, bought directly from a local fishing boat, is served atop grilled bok choy and topped with finely diced kabocha pumpkin, tomato, onion, and the chef ’s grated turnip citrus-soy sauce, or ponzu. The best-loved appetizer is garlic shrimp, which is good enough to give the North Shore trucks a run for their money, while the house specialty is a savory Japanese pancake that is cooked to order with nearly any ingredient in the world and sliced like a pizza. Take a Trip to Beijing Authenticity rules at Beijing Chinese Seafood Restaurant, and the consensus among those who know is: it's best to go during the daytime, as the restaurant is less busy than it is for the dinner crowd. This elegant dining room serves true Chinese food, with dim sum, made 62

fresh-to-order, including crowdpleasers like crispy-skinned Peking Duck and steamed dumplings topping the charts. Sushi a la South Beach The multiple-page menu of this indoor-outdoor hot spot is available all day long. Doraku Sushi chefs prepare traditional sushi alongside inventive fusion dishes that deliciously bridge the gap between South Beach, Miami and Tokyo, Japan. Favorites include the savory Golden Buddha roll (tender hamachi, scallion and asparagus topped with shiso and uni, seared and finished with aonori, garlic aioli, kabayaki sauce and red/black tobiko) and extreme-heat “God of Fire” Kagu-Tsuchi roll (spicy tuna with cucumber and jalapeño topped with tuna sashimi, habañero tobiko and spicy garlic aioli). *Prices and availability subject to change without notice.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL DAILY GRINDS Okonomiyaki Chibo Restaurant’s weekday daily specials, all of which include salad, rice, miso soup and tsukemono, have regulars returning week after week: • Monday and Friday: juicy, grilled-to-order six-ounce ribeye steak • Tuesday: kicking pork and tofu served with spicy dark oyster sauce • Wednesday: grilled fresh ‘ahi cooked to order and served with spicy ponzu • Thursday: garlic shrimp — good enough to give the North Shore trucks a run for their money.

he main boulevards and streets in Waikīkī are named after kings, queens and other members of Hawai‘i’s royal family who left social, political and cultural impacts in the Islands. This quick reference guide, along with pronunciation tips, will help you learn more about the people behind the names: Kalākaua (kah-laah-kow-ah) Avenue: The main thoroughfare in Waikīkī is named after King David Kalākaua. He ruled the Hawaiian Islands from 1874 to 1891. He was nicknamed the “Merrie Monarch” because he was a patron of the arts and revived hula—which had been banned in the mid-1800s by missionaries— and built ‘Iolani Palace in Downtown Honolulu, the only official royal residence in the U.S. Kūhiō (coo-he-oh) Avenue: This street honors the memory of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole. Known as “The Citizen Prince,” Kūhiō was a delegate to Congress for nearly 20 years after the Hawaiian Islands were annexed by the U.S. He passed the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, a program returning a portion of lands in Hawai‘i that were confiscated by the U.S. to native Hawaiians. Lili‘uokalani (lee-lee-ooh-ohkah-lah-knee) Avenue: Named after Hawai‘i’s last monarch, Queen Lili‘uokalani. She inherited the throne in 1891, but was deposed by a coup of American and European businessmen two years later. In 1895 the queen was charged with treason by the provisional government and imprisoned in ‘Iolani Palace, where she wrote the song “The Queen’s Prayer” and a memoir called “Hawai‘i’s Story by Hawai‘i’s Queen.” R OYAL HAWAII AN C EN TER
