We hope your school year is off to a great start. This past summer, we were saddened to learn of the passing of an American literary master—author E.L. Doctorow, who died on July 21st at the age of 84. Doctorow’s works of fiction—including Billy Bathgate, The Book of Daniel, Ragtime, and The March, to name a few—spanned centuries in American history, while illuminating social and political issues. To honor Doctorow’s legacy, we have included a “Read Doctorow’s America” classroom poster in the back of this catalog, featuring a colorful timeline of his works and their American settings.

JUST MERCY A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson

A New York Times Bestseller Named one of the Best Books of the Year by The New York Times • The Washington Post • The Boston Globe • The Seattle Times • Esquire • TIME Winner of: • the Carnegie Medal for Nonfiction • the NAACP Image Award for Nonfiction • a Books for a Better Life Award Finalist for: • the Los Angeles Times Book Prize • the Kirkus Reviews Prize An American Library Association Notable Book

A powerful true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to fix our broken system of justice—from one of the most brilliant and influential lawyers of our time. Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever. Just Mercy is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer’s coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice.

M

y grandmother was the daughter of people who were enslaved in Caroline County, Virginia. She was born in the 1880s, her parents in the 1840s, and the legacy of slavery very much shaped her and the things she would say to me. When I visited my grandmother, she would hug me so tightly I could barely breathe. After a little while, she would ask me, “Bryan, do you still feel me hugging you?” If I said yes, she’d let me be; if I said no, she would assault me again. I said no a lot because it made me happy to be wrapped in her formidable arms. She never tired of pulling me to her. “You can’t understand most of the important things from a distance, Bryan. You have to get close,” she told me all the time. This book is about getting closer to mass incarceration and extreme punishment in America. It is about how easily we condemn people in this country and the injustice we create when we allow fear, anger, and distance to shape the way we treat the most vulnerable among us. It’s also about a dramatic period in our recent history, a period that continues to mark the lives of millions of Americans—of all races, ages, and sexes—and the American psyche as a whole. The prison population in America has grown from 300,000 in 1972 to 2.3 million people today. The United States now has the highest incarceration rate in the world. We have condemned thousands of children, some as young as 13, to die in prison with life imprisonment without parole sentences. We’ve executed over 1,400 people with a death penalty system that has proved remarkably unreliable. Over 150 people condemned to execution have been proved innocent, exonerated and released. In 1983, I was a 23-year-old student at Harvard Law School working in Georgia on an internship, eager and inexperienced, and worried that I was in over my head. When I learned that I would be visiting a death row prisoner alone, with no lawyer accompanying me, I tried not to let my panic show. When I signed up for this internship, I hadn’t given much thought to the fact that I would actually be meeting condemned prisoners. To be honest, I didn’t even know if I wanted to be a lawyer. The distance I experienced in my first year of law school made me feel lost. I could not have known that proximity to the condemned, to people unfairly judged, would guide me back to something that felt like home. I document my journey and some remarkable people I represented, including an innocent man named Walter McMillian who was wrongly convicted and sentenced to death in Monroeville, Alabama, the home of Harper Lee’s fictional novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. In this book, you will learn the story of Walter’s case, which taught me about our system’s disturbing indifference to inaccurate or unreliable verdicts, our comfort with bias, and our tolerance of unfair prosecutions and convictions. Walter’s experience taught me the ways our system traumatizes and victimizes people when we exercise our power to convict and condemn irresponsibly—not just the accused but also their families, their communities, and even the victims of crime. But Walter’s case also taught me something else: that there is light within this darkness. My work has taught me some basic and humbling truths, including this vital lesson: Each of us is more than the worst thing we’ve ever done. My work with the poor and the incarcerated has persuaded me that the opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice. I’ve come to believe that the true measure of our commitment to justice, the character of our society, our commitment to the rule of law, fairness, and equality cannot be measured by how we treat the rich, the powerful, the privileged, and the respected among us. The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned. We are all implicated when we allow other people to be mistreated. I believe it’s necessary to recognize that we all need mercy, we all need justice, and—perhaps—we all need some measure of unmerited grace. HEADSTRONG 52 Women Who Changed Science—and the World by Rachel Swaby

In 2013, The New York Times published an obituary for Yvonne Brill. It began: “She made a mean beef stroganoff, followed her husband from job to job, and took eight years off from work to raise three children.” It wasn’t until the second paragraph that readers discovered why the Times had devoted several hundred words to her life: Brill was a brilliant rocket scientist who invented a propulsion system to keep communications satellites in orbit, and had recently been awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Among the questions the obituary—and consequent outcry—prompted were, Who are the role models for today’s female scientists, and where can we find the stories that cast them in their true light? Headstrong delivers a powerful, global, and engaging response. Covering Nobel Prize winners and major innovators, as well as lesserknown but hugely significant scientists who influence our every day, Rachel Swaby’s vibrant profiles span centuries of courageous thinkers and illustrate how each one’s ideas developed, from their first moment of scientific engagement through the research and discovery for which they’re best known. This fascinating tour reveals these 52 women at their best—while encouraging and inspiring a new generation of girls to put on their lab coats.

“Headstrong is a true gem. So many amazing women have had an incredible impact on STEM fields, and this book gives clear, concise, easy-to-digest histories of 52 of them—there’s no longer an excuse for not being familiar with our math and science heroines. Thank you, Rachel!” —Danica McK ellar , actress and New York Times bestselling author of Math D oesn’t Suck

“Although many of these women may not be familiar names outside their courses of study, the author’s spadework should bring them to the forefront, allowing the general public to learn about the females who pushed beyond sexist attitudes to undertake and achieve success in a maledominated arena. These short accounts should inspire girls who want to study science to follow their dreams. . . . succinct and informative.” —K irkus Reviews

programmer examines a computer as massive as a room and finds the first computer bug—a moth stuck in the machine’s relays. A 10-year old is hunting for treasure and discovers a dinosaur skeleton. Hidden in a pile of data, a woman finds the inner core of the earth, another reveals nuclear fission, and another spots evidence of continental drift in the ocean floor. Who are these incredible scientists? Most of us can’t even name one. I wrote Headstrong: 52 Women Who Changed Science—And the World to help reveal the hidden history of women in STEM fields. The desire to write these stories was three-pronged. First, I was dismayed at the way women in science were being covered. When the New York Times obituary for the rocket scientist Yvonne Brill started with, “She made a mean beef stroganoff,” I was as disappointed as the rest of the Internet. I wanted to rewrite Yvonne Brill’s profile and find a way to more appropriately honor the exceptional work of other women in science. Secondly, I was shocked how few scientists I knew. I found surprises even in those women I thought I knew. Florence Nightingale, for instance, was not just the founder of modern nursing, but also an important health statistician. In many more cases, I knew the discovery but not the discoverer. The Apgar Score, for example, isn’t just an acronym, but also the last name of Virginia Apgar, the pioneering anesthesiologist and the score’s developer. I found so many stories—and such fascinating ones! My hope is that one day we’ll be able to rattle off these accomplishments and the scientists behind them with ease, just as we name any number of male scientists and their work. Lastly—and most importantly—I hoped that girls considering STEM fields might pick up this book and read about a whole history of women succeeding. I hoped that girls would read about Grace Hopper and consider computer science. I hoped they’d hear about Mary Anning and picture themselves becoming dinosaur hunters. I hoped the stories of Inge Lehmann, who discovered Earth’s inner core, Lise Meitner, whose insight and leadership identified nuclear fission, and Marie Tharp, who mapped the ocean floor, would inspire the next generation of women in STEM.

Chapter One: Birdbrain

I

looked out the window of my dad’s brown van, watching trees pass by. My mom and brother, Joe, were strapped in behind their seat belts, waving goodbye to the mountains in the rearview mirror. It was the spring of 1980, and we were driving from Denver, Colorado, to Miami, Florida. A truck filled with furniture and clothes drove east a few hours ahead of us. Feeling the van rock side to side, I caught myself staring at miles of wheat and corn, barbed-wire fences, and occasional barrels of hay. Looking ahead, smelling the pine and horses, feeling the wind carry, I felt that my life was changing. Houses peered out at us and vanished. Once fascinated, I had to wonder where they went. Whole towns disappeared, never to be seen again. One moment I saw cabbages, radio towers, farms, and then empty stretches of road. Weeks before, Joe and I had been taken out of school to prepare for our move back east. Joe was in the third grade. I was in the first. Before our move I asked him, thinking he knew better, how things would be different in Florida. He looked around at the schoolyard where we stood: “Everything will be different.” We moved into a neighborhood house with an acre yard that sat back from the shoulder of a busy two-lane street in North Miami. The house was spacious and open. The walls were paneled with stained wood. The hall creaked and moaned. There was a porch at the front of the house and an enclosed swimming pool in the back. The screens whistled differently in the warm wind. The windows were glass venetian-style shutters, thin plates that we opened and closed with little metal dials. Each window was covered by an awning, and so the house was always dark within, even when we had every light on. Dad thought we had no room to complain. With a pool and a backyard like ours, he was sure Joe and I had everything we should need. Dad warned us that we would soon be going to a bigger school, and that we’d need to prepare ourselves. First of all, Miami was nothing like the suburbs of Denver. Here, we’d be taking classes with people from all over the world. We’d have to learn to talk with different kinds of people, and even deal with the sense of being a minority in some of our classrooms, although this, he suggested, wasn’t really true and would in time wear off. Passing tests and turning in assignments should be easy. The problem would be the jealousy of other boys, he said. At school, kids would envy us because we were luckier than they. He had this phrase: most likely to succeed. Here began two very different journeys in education. My brother would become an honors student, earning high marks and graduating easily. I would be called a discipline problem. My path would be beset with many obstacles, and I would remain illiterate until high school.

THE UNDERGROUND GIRLS OF KABUL In Search of a Hidden Resistance in Afghanistan by Jenny Nordberg

In Afghanistan, a culture ruled almost entirely by men, the birth of a son is cause for celebration and the arrival of a daughter is often mourned as misfortune. A bacha posh (literally translated from Dari as “dressed up like a boy”) is a third kind of child—a girl temporarily raised as a boy and presented as such to the outside world. Jenny Nordberg, the reporter who broke the story of this phenomenon for The New York Times, constructs a powerful and moving account of those secretly living on the other side of a deeply segregated society where women have almost no rights and little freedom. The Underground Girls of Kabul is anchored by vivid characters who bring this remarkable story to life: Azita, a female parliamentarian who sees no other choice but to turn her fourth daughter Mehran into a boy; Zahra, the tomboy teenager who struggles with puberty and refuses her parents’ attempts to turn her back into a girl; Shukria, now a married mother of three after living for twenty years as a man; and Nader, who prays with Shahed, the undercover female police officer, as they both remain in male disguise as adults. At the heart of this emotional narrative is a new perspective on the extreme sacrifices of Afghan women and girls against the violent backdrop of America’s longest war. Divided into four parts, the book follows those born as the unwanted sex in Afghanistan, but who live as the socially favored gender through childhood and puberty, only to later be forced into marriage and childbirth. The Underground Girls of Kabul charts their dramatic life cycles, while examining our own history and the parallels to subversive actions of people who live under oppression everywhere.

acha posh, the practice of dressing a girl like a boy, offers a window into a system of severe gender apartheid—a system that exists not only in Afghanistan, but in many countries where women are oppressed. The Underground Girls of Kabul is about disguising oneself to survive in such a place. Resistance to this kind of patriarchy has occurred throughout history when women were excluded from education and unable to freely choose who they married, or whether to have children. Many girls and women beyond Afghanistan, and in our own history, have had to pretend to be boys and men to reach for rights that society dictated were not theirs. I wanted this book to be urgent. Because I am, frankly, angry that my own education did not include a conversation about why women have historically been seen as less valuable and less important than men—nor where these ideas come from. It was always presented as an accepted, unexamined fact. In my book, I’ve searched for the roots of these beliefs, in religion, biology and culture. Some extremely brave Afghan women revealed their most intimate secrets to me. They spoke about what it feels like to have tasted life “on the other side” and to then be forced to let go of the privilege they found there. They have all infiltrated the world of men and boys in a real-life nature versus nurture experiment that questions binary gender definitions, and whether we as humans can exist along a broader spectrum. Their stories constitute a defiant piece of history that I hope will spur conversations about the discrimination that still remains in our part of the world and the culture of honor, which often requires girls and women to be pure and modest, while men are asked to be strong and protective. I also hope this book will provoke hard questions about why we go to war and whether we really are so different from those we fight. Trying to be someone—or something—else has always been a way for those of a marginalized gender, skin color, religion or sexuality to escape discrimination. But what does it really do to you to deny who you are? And why should anyone ever have to do it? So what is the difference between men and women? I have asked many Afghan women that and their answers often come back as a single word: freedom. One gender has it, the other does not. And those with pants always come first. From that point, my story begins. And so, I hope, do your own questions. I would love to be part of your conversations, in classrooms and in chat rooms and wherever they take place. You can find me at @nordbergj and bachaposh.com. I am very curious to know who else lives in disguise, and what that has been like—I know there are so many of us out there.

THUNDER & LIGHTNING Weather Past, Present, Future by Lauren Redniss

Random House ★ HC 978-0-8129-9317-2 272pp. ★ $30.00/$39.00 Can. Exam Copy: $15.00 EB: 978-0-679-64472-9 Reading Level: 12

From the National Book Award finalist Lauren Redniss, author of Radioactive, comes a dazzling fusion of storytelling, visual art, and reportage that grapples with weather in all its dimensions: its danger and its beauty, why it happens and what it means. Weather is the very air we breathe—it shapes our daily lives and alters the course of history. In Thunder & Lightning, Lauren Redniss tells the story of weather and humankind through the ages. This wide-ranging work roams from the driest desert on earth to a frigid island in the Arctic, from the Biblical flood to the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Redniss visits the headquarters of the National Weather Service, recounts top-secret rainmaking operations during the Vietnam War, and examines the economic impact of disasters like Hurricane Katrina. Drawing on extensive research and countless interviews, she examines our own day and age, from our most personal decisions—Do I need an umbrella today?—to the awesome challenges we face with global climate change. Redniss produced each element of Thunder & Lightning: the text, the artwork, the covers, and every page in between. She created many of the images using the antiquated printmaking technique copper plate photogravure etching. She even designed the book’s typeface. The result is a book unlike any other: a spellbinding combination of storytelling, art, and science.

“Lauren Redniss is one of the most creative science writers of our time— her combination of beautiful artwork, reporting, and poetic prose brings science to life in ways that words alone simply cannot. Thunder & Lighting is a fascinating meditation on how climate affects the earth’s landscape and the lives inhabiting it, but also how the landscape of a book— the layout of its text, the images on its pages—impacts the telling of a story. This is an important book about a topic that couldn’t be more important to us all.” —R ebecca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta L acks

An expanded edition of the powerful memoir about two sisters’ determination to survive during the Holocaust featuring new and never before revealed information about the first transport of women to Auschwitz. In March 1942, Rena Kornreich and 997 other young women were rounded up and forced onto the first Jewish transport of women to Auschwitz. Soon after, Rena was reunited with her sister Danka at the camp, beginning a story of love and courage that would last three years and forty-one days. From smuggling bread for their friends to narrowly escaping the ever-present threats that loomed at every turn, the compelling events in Rena’s Promise remind us that humanity and hope can survive inordinate brutality. “An extraordinary book, vividly written and generously told. You will not easily forget Rena Kornreich and her sister Danka. Nor should you. Harrowing as it often is, this is less a tragedy than a love story. “H

ow many of you know that the very first Jewish transport to Auschwitz was made up entirely of women? Raise your hands.” No one’s hand goes up. It is a beautiful spring day—the kind of day we think never occurred in Auschwitz— and I am standing outside the Holocaust Memorial Museum, where over a thousand young people are waiting in line with their teachers. “Two-hundred and ninety-seven of them were teenagers,” I tell them. “Why did they take girls first?” one young woman asks. It’s a great question. “Why do you think?” I ask. A scintillating discussion ensues. I have been teaching for over twenty years and know how overwhelming it can be to get beyond the horror that often accompanies Holocaust curriculum. Rena’s Promise, which chronicles over three years in the death camps, is different. Young readers marvel at the courage of young men who risk their lives to help Rena and her sister, Danka. They cheer when the sisters outwit the nefarious Dr. Mengele and escape from his deadly work detail. Along with paying tribute to every single person who helped she and her sister survive—be they prisoners, prison guards, or complete strangers—Rena tells a story of hope and the power of love. Skype chatting with classrooms as far north as Montana and as far south as North Carolina, students and teachers have told me they like Rena’s story, saying, “Rena is so positive,” “I feel like I’m in Auschwitz with her,” “I like the footnotes,” “It’s about women,” and “It’s like finding out what happened to Anne Frank.” Whether it is a discussion on morality and ethics, courage and faith, or the difference between men and women’s experiences in the camps, young readers do more than think their way through Rena’s story—they feel it in their hearts, and that is where this history belongs. On our website, www.RenasPromise.com, you will find plenty of resources to help navigate this daunting and compelling history, including: • A study guide with interactive exercises • A video blog chronicling my research trips to Slovakia and Poland • A free online curriculum with a research assignment, essay topic ideas, and unique and visual ways to write text analyses • An interactive timeline focusing on women in Auschwitz • The Promise Project, where students can see actual photos and newly discovered family histories about girls on the first transport • A link to the Rena’s Promise Facebook page, where Rena and Danka’s daughters share insights about their mothers • Contact information to arrange a Skype chat session with your class and me Rena’s Promise is a positive and dynamic learning opportunity that can be lifechanging for both teachers and students.

A powerful debut novel about a girl’s coming of age—and how her sense of family, friendship, love, and belonging is profoundly shaped by war. Zagreb, 1991. Ana Juric´ is a carefree ten-year-old, living with her family in a small apartment in Croatia’s capital. But that year, civil war breaks out across Yugoslavia, splintering Ana’s idyllic childhood. Daily life is altered by food rations and air raid drills, and soccer matches are replaced by sniper fire. Neighbors grow suspicious of one another, and Ana’s sense of safety starts to fray. When the war arrives at her doorstep, Ana must find her way in a dangerous world. New York, 2001. Ana is now a college student in Manhattan. Though she’s tried to move on from her past, she can’t escape her memories of war—secrets she keeps even from those closest to her. Haunted by the events that forever changed her family, Ana returns to Croatia after a decade away, hoping to make peace with the place she once called home. As she faces her ghosts, she must come to terms with her country’s difficult history and the events that interrupted her childhood years before. Moving back and forth through time, Girl at War is an honest, generous, brilliantly written novel that illuminates how history shapes the individual. Sara Novic´ fearlessly shows the impact of war on one young girl—and its legacy on all of us. It’s a debut by a writer who has stared into recent history to find a story that continues to resonate today.

ecently my first novel became an audiobook to which I cannot listen. This is not a complaint, exactly; to write a book someone wants to publish in any format is a writer’s dream. But to hold some disc that contains a thing I made, transformed into a thing I can no longer understand, is a quandary few writers experience. To be a Deaf writer is to make a certain kind of shortlist. Growing up with a progressive hearing loss, I was educated in spoken English alongside my hearing peers; when that became too difficult I learned American Sign Language (ASL) and had interpreters in class. Still, the linguistic modality in which I am most fluent is written English, because in it I have the most access and the most control. When I’m writing I need not be translated for a hearing audience. When I’m reading a book, sounds and words are clear; paper never covers its mouth or turns its head. And yet there seems an undeniable link between speech and hearing the practice of writing. Famous authors, Stephen King among them, frequently declare that one must read his or her work aloud in order to edit it. At best this advice leaves me feeling left out, but at worst, I wonder: am I making mistakes a hearing writer wouldn’t? Dialogue, specifically, feels inextricable from hearing. Someone who writes dialogue well is said to “have an ear” for it. I don’t think I write dialogue well. Whether this is an average writerly paranoia or is linked to the physiology of hearing loss, I’m not sure. But certainly a cultural divide between Deaf and hearing worlds with regard to frankness comes into play. In Deaf culture subtlety is not a valued trait. Stemming from the language’s visual nature and the days before SMS and email, when it was harder to keep tabs on a deaf person, it’s expected that people will openly discuss their feelings, plans, bodily functions, etc. In the writing world, this directness translates to “bad dialogue.” “That’s not how people talk,” my workshopmates have said. And they’re right. Furthermore, the English phraseology of deafness is overwhelmingly negative. To hear is synonymous with understanding—“I hear you” suggests the speaker’s knowledge or capacity for empathy on a subject, whereas, across the headlines, cries for justice often “fall on deaf ears.” These language norms may seem inconsequential, but they wear shortcuts in our thinking, and so as long as deafness is a synonym for ignorance, d/Deaf people are ‘othered’ into a position of inferiority. Working within a language that works against me can sometimes seem a less-than-ideal occupation. Then again, what is the job of a writer if not to reinvent language, or at least to create the space and tools for the silenced? I am reminded of a Chinua Achebe essay I teach my Composition students. In an examination of English in postcolonial Africa, Achebe looks to Baldwin, who says of the language’s limits: “Perhaps the language was not my own because I had never attempted to use it, had only learned to imitate it.” Achebe goes on to say, “I recognize of course that Baldwin’s problem is not exactly mine, but I feel the English language will be able to carry the weight of my African experience. But it will have to be a new English.”1 And while neither Baldwin’s nor Achebe’s problems are exactly mine, and are in fact much bigger, I can look at the successes of these literary giants and extract a hope that English, with a little work, can carry the Deaf voice, too.

A Booklist Top 10 Novel for LGBTQ Youth

Part Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, part Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Adam Silvera’s extraordinary debut confronts race, class, and sexuality during one charged near-future summer in the Bronx. The Leteo Institute’s revolutionary memory-relief procedure seems too good to be true to Aaron Soto—miracle cure-alls don’t tend to pop up in the Bronx projects. Aaron could never forget how he’s grown up poor, how his friends aren’t there for him, or how his father committed suicide in their one-bedroom apartment. Aaron has the support of his patient girlfriend, if not necessarily his distant brother and overworked mother, but it’s not enough. Then Thomas shows up. He has a sweet movie-watching setup on his roof, and he doesn’t mind Aaron’s obsession with a popular fantasy series. There are nicknames, inside jokes. Most importantly, Thomas doesn’t mind talking about Aaron’s past. But Aaron’s newfound happiness isn’t welcome on his block. Since he can’t stay away from Thomas or suddenly stop being gay, Aaron must turn to Leteo to straighten himself out, even if it means forgetting who he is.

ADAM SILVERA

Dear Aaron Soto, Sorry to go all Darth Vader on you, but I am your father. Kind of, maybe, sort of. I guess creator is a more apt title, which I’m going to roll with because it sounds way cooler. Imagine homeboy Darth telling Luke, “I am your creator.” I can see it on t-shirts now. I’m just realizing this now, but fathers play a huge role in More Happy Than Not, the novel you narrate. Your father—as you know—has recently committed suicide before the novel begins for reasons unclear to you, as is sometimes the case with suicide. Trying to find a why is crippling for those left behind. Your girlfriend Genevieve’s father isn’t very protective of his only child, which has screwed with her head a bit. That boy Thomas you’re going to be crushing on? (Whoops, spoiler!) His father sucks even more than Genevieve’s because he ditched him when he was a kid—on his birthday. He just got in a car and drove away, never writing or calling Thomas again. Your sort-of best friend, Brendan, is living with his grandfather because his father has been in jail for close to a year now. This might be of little surprise to you, but I don’t have the best relationship with my father either, and quickly learned that there’s a difference between having a father and having a dad. A dad takes you and your friends to the movies and is always there for your birthday and loves you despite who you love. A father is the less intimate version, a person who helps make up your DNA and doesn’t necessarily carry any responsibilities beyond that. I also grew up with friends whose fathers were either not around or not present in the way that mattered. I guess this letter shouldn’t be a surprise to me at all, nor should the awful patriarchal representation of my four primary players in More Happy. But life isn’t easy—mine wasn’t and still isn’t. Same goes for you. As your creator, I have to say I’m sorry. I put you on a path where I put you through more than the average sixteen-year-old should suffer through. Even your seventeenth birthday brings a nasty surprise. Whenever you’re an inch away from victory and happiness, I throw another roadblock your way and force you to reinvent yourself. I don’t do this for the sake of exciting and/or heartbreaking fiction, but instead to explore the life I thought I had in store for me. The life you’re battling your way through is the war I thought I was going to have to fight myself. Coming out in the Bronx seemed impossible, and it took me until adulthood before I found the strength to do it. Your cautious feelings were my feelings, but your greatest consequences are yours alone, and I ache for you, truly. I am your creator, but my empathy for you also makes me more of a dad than a father, I guess, because I hate seeing you go through this. And while a happy ending isn’t on the way, you do come away from everything with a deep understanding that being more happy than not will be good enough during times of great tragedy, and that happiness will come again if you’ll let it. Mad love, Adam The above is a letter from Adam Silvera, the author, to Aaron Soto, the lead character, in the fictional book More Happy Than Not.

Zack Lightman has spent his life dreaming. Dreaming that the real world could be a little more like the countless science-fiction books, movies, and video games he’s spent his life consuming. Dreaming that one day, some fantastic, world-altering event will shatter the monotony of his humdrum existence and whisk him off on some grand space-faring adventure. But hey, there’s nothing wrong with a little escapism, right? After all, Zack tells himself, he knows the difference between fantasy and reality. He knows that here in the real world, aimless teenage gamers with anger issues don’t get chosen to save the universe. And then he sees the flying saucer. Even stranger, the alien ship he’s staring at is straight out of the video game he plays every night, a hugely popular online flight simulator called Armada—in which gamers just happen to be protecting the earth from alien invaders. At once gleefully embracing and brilliantly subverting science-fiction conventions as only Ernest Cline could, Armada is a rollicking, surprising thriller, a classic coming-of-age adventure, and an alien invasion tale like nothing you’ve ever read before—one whose every page is infused with the pop-culture savvy that has helped make Ready Player One a phenomenon.

From where did you get the inspiration for your latest novel? I think the main inspiration came from growing up as a child of Star Wars, ET, and Close Encounters, as well as growing up at the dawn of the video game and home computer age. I was part of the first generation to have a starship simulator in my living room, in the form of an Atari 2600. I used to build an X-Wing cockpit out of couch pillows in front of the television, so I could pretend that I was Luke Skywalker on his way to blow up the Death Star. I spent a huge portion of my childhood wishing that my wicked video game skills might someday have value in the real world, a fantasy that was made even more intense by all of the video gamesbecome-reality stories I devoured back in the 80s, like WarGames, Tron, Ender’s Game, or The Last Starfighter. But I think the very first kernel of the idea for Armada came from reading a news story about the tank combat video game BATTLEZONE, released by Atari in 1980. In 1981, the US Army purchased the rights to the game and had its creator, Ed Rotberg, reprogram it to be an actual tank combat simulator called Bradley Trainer, which they intended to use to train real Army recruits how to operate a new tank called the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Bradley Trainer never made it past the prototype phase, but the realization that a video game could actually be used to train you for real world combat had a profound effect on me, and on how I viewed video games. Eventually, all of these separate threads were woven together to form the idea for Armada: What if all of the science fiction movies I grew up watching, and all of the alien invasion video games I grew up playing, were actually created to prepare the people of Earth for the real thing?

You have visited many schools that have adopted Ready Player One for common reading. What’s the most interesting or memorable thing a student has said to you? Why do you think young people can relate to your work? The most memorable thing students usually say to me is also the most common. “This is the first book I’ve ever been assigned as homework that I actually enjoyed reading.” I take it as huge compliment. I think one reason young people might be able to relate to my work is because it deals with issues that are so relevant to their everyday lives: technology, the Internet, social media, online identity, and simulation versus reality. Both of your books feature a high school student as the main protagonist. Did you/do you share any similarities with either or both characters? I was sort of a socially awkward geek like Wade when I was in grade and middle school, but by the time I was in high school I was dating girls and had developed a big circle of friends— although my friends and girlfriends were usually geeks-of-a-feather, like me. Do you have any advice for young writers? I don’t have any new advice, but I can share some that has stuck with me over the years: • Write what you know. • Write about things that interest and excite you, but only if you hope to make your work interesting and exciting to others. • Try not to let anyone rush you—including yourself. • Finish what you start.

he best English teacher I ever had is a familiar name to many people: Coach John Wooden. When I was playing basketball for U.C.L.A. and traveling to away games, Coach Wooden was a very handy guy to have around. He had also taught English, and since I worked on my writing assignments on the road, I could always ask him about run-on sentences and dangling modifiers. Years before, in grammar school, what first drew me to writing were the similarities between what I saw and heard in my history class and what I read in the morning paper. In my child’s mind, it seemed that the reporter was actually an historian—only he or she was cataloguing history on a daily basis. I found it fascinating, that ability to communicate what was happening in the world to the world: not just with images . . . but with the power of words. My particular school also emphasized language skills. At a youth journalism project in Harlem (called H.A.R.Y.O.U.), I found myself with a bunch of kids who also had an interest in writing. The difference was, I was the only one up to speed with grammar and syntax. (I may’ve been the only one who knew the meaning of the word, ‘syntax.’) My ability to punctuate and proofread made me an instant editor! From grammar school on, teachers encouraged me to express myself on the page. I was a history major (with an English minor) at U.C.L.A. and though I’ve authored ten books, including children’s stories, two autobiographies, and several historical subjects, this venture into my first full-length fiction novel, a mystery/adventure entitled Mycroft Holmes, has been the most rewarding to date. I chose to write about Mycroft Holmes because I’m a huge fan of Arthur Conan Doyle’s better-known creation, Sherlock. But there are so many variations of Sherlock. I didn’t want to join an already crowded field—and I was always intrigued by this older brother whom Sherlock himself said was “smarter” than he was, and who was in the smack-center of British government when Great Britain was the most powerful country in the world. My co-writer and I batted the story back and forth, chapter by chapter, finessing and polishing each one. We wanted to be true to the era in which our story takes place (1870), as well as pay homage to the style of Arthur Conan Doyle without mimicking it. Although Mycroft Holmes deals with some adult subjects (slavery and the resultant violence), it’s more than just an entertaining adventure: it has life lessons that both you and your students will draw from and enjoy. It’s turned into a little jewel, in my opinion. I sincerely hope you’ll join me in this fresh look at Sherlock Holmes’s “older, smarter brother”!

I’m a Big Nerd

W

hen I was in high school, I was that nerd in the class who, when told to memorize a speech from Shakespeare, went home immediately and started memorizing. I was the first one to raise my hand to recite the speech, and, one year of high school—I kid you not—I took a fake sword to school to recite a speech from Macbeth. I was one of the lucky ones. I knew back then (and I know now) that Shakespeare doesn’t come easily to everyone. In fact, some people would rather undergo repeated root canals than read Shakespeare. Fair enough. When I wrote the William Shakespeare’s Star Wars ® books, I mostly just wanted people to laugh. After all, R2-D2 speaks in English, Han Solo sings, Luke Skywalker is a triumphant hero, Boba Fett is a suave player, Yoda speaks in haiku, and Jar Jar Binks is a genius (no, really!). But another little part of me hoped that, for young people in middle school, high school, and college—the ones who loathe the idea of memorizing Shakespeare, or who roll their eyes when the Shakespeare unit comes around in English class, or who just think they won’t get it—William Shakespeare’s Star Wars ® might form a bridge into Shakespeare’s plays. But I don’t want you to try these books because of my ulterior motives. Don’t try them because some random guy wants you to. Try them because you love Star Wars ®, or because you’re like me when I was younger, and you love Shakespeare. Or both! Find out what makes Darth Vader declare, “What a rogue and peasant Sith am I!” or to whom Luke Skywalker is speaking when he says, “Friend, rebels, starfighters, lend me your ears.” I threw all kinds of things in, just for fun—a few references to Star Trek™, a Snoop Dogg lyric, even a rickroll. Every line Mace Windu says includes the title of a Samuel L. Jackson movie. I also couldn’t help but have Qui-Gon Jinn say, just before he fights Darth Maul, these words that you may recognize from another Liam Neeson movie: Qui-Gon:

I know not who you are or what you want, Yet I do have skills most particular, Acquir’d throughout a Jedi’s long career. These skills do make me nightmarish to such As you. Surrender now, and you shall live— If not, you shall be dead, and there’s an end.

That’s a pretty direct quote of Liam Neeson’s famous speech from the movie Taken, just in case you don’t recognize it. As you can see, I take great geeky pleasure in reading these books, and I’m hoping just a little bit of that rubs off on you. So, if you read one of my books, and you write me and tell me you like it, I’ll be happy. And if you read one of my books and tell me that, because of the book, you decided to give Shakespeare a try, I’ll be really happy. And if you think I’m just a huge nerd, well, you wouldn’t be the first.

The Enduring Legacy of Thousand Pieces of Gold

O

ver the years, many students have confessed they started reading Thousand Pieces of Gold reluctantly and solely because it was assigned. Invariably, these students have then added in wonderment that they soon found themselves so deeply engrossed they couldn’t put the book down. What hooks them, they tell me, is Lalu’s capture during a bandit raid on her village in northern China. And what keeps them turning the pages are her courageous attempts to escape captivity and then enslavement, her unflagging efforts to live free in the American West as Polly. Throughout her life, Lalu/Polly was victimized yet never a victim. Nor, despite devastating losses, did she succumb to bitterness. Strong without being hard, she survived with her humor, generosity, and capacity for love intact. Her irrepressible spirit made a lasting impression on even casual acquaintances and inspired me to write her story in Thousand Pieces of Gold, which has won readers’ hearts the world over. Reflective of the book’s universality is a Philadelphia student, a lost boy of the Sudan who—eyes glistening, hands clutching a copy of Thousand Pieces of Gold to his chest—choked, “This is my story.” And so abiding is the affection and respect of some students for Lalu/Polly that several have named their daughters after her. One has even successfully entrusted finding paths through life’s thickets by asking, “What would she do?”

THE MARTIAN A Novel by Andy Weir

Broadway Books ★ TR 978-0-553-41802-6 ★ 384pp. $15.00/$18.00 Can. Exam Copy: $3.00

Winner of the Alex Award Now a Major Motion Picture

The Martian, by debut science fiction novelist Andy Weir, is a survival story about an astronaut who gets left behind on the red planet when his crew believes him to be dead. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate, Mark finds himself stranded on Mars and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Out-of-this-World Learning Opportunities with Andy Weir’s The Martian

F

or some students, being in the classroom is a lot like being stranded on Mars. They feel isolated from the content. They have difficulty connecting with the subject, the teacher, or even other students. Whether they’re reluctant readers, reluctant mathematicians, or just plain reluctant, some students need a creative catalyst to get excited about learning. Andy Weir’s novel The Martian is the perfect spark for igniting students’ curiosity. That’s why I was so excited to share it with high school students during Northern Illinois University’s creative writing and STEM summer camps. Andy Weir makes science the hero of the book. He transforms chemistry from letters on a periodic table into a life or death struggle to create water. He teaches trial and error in engineering by blowing up his main character. He applies math to rocket trajectories and rescue missions and he shows his work without being boring. The Martian’s protagonist Mark Watney has a strong voice and makes hilarious observations about being marooned on an empty planet. He also thinks up amazingly inventive ways to stay entertained while staying alive. He survives by thinking his way out of problems, by pushing himself to work harder, design better, and use more duct tape. Mark Watney’s refusal to quit spurs global collaboration as scientists and mathematicians around the world mount a space race to save him. I love a good dystopian novel as much as the next girl, but it’s refreshing to read a book where society is coming together rather than falling apart. Over the summer, STEM Read used The Martian as the basis for writing and science exercises for teens. NIU’s Creative Writing camp looked at Weir’s use of dialogue and spent an afternoon analyzing The Martian’s opening line and paragraph. Rather than shying away from the language, we discussed why Weir chose it and how it provided context and characterization. In the STEM Careers camp, we used the book as inspiration for computer science, communications, and engineering scenarios. Students programmed mini rovers to perform missions and send messages. They also used everything from PVC pipes to duct tape as they engineered their own air-tight Habs. Best of all, the students got to participate in a virtual visit with Andy Weir. At first, some of the students were reluctant about participating, but Andy Weir quickly set an easy-going tone by introducing his cats and talking about the failed writing projects that led up to The Martian. Weir is smart, witty, and engaging. His experiences as an author and a software engineer made him a hit with young writers and scientists. After the talk, students who hadn’t read the book begged me for copies. My favorite part of working with students is finding books that will blow their minds. The Martian is a mind-blowing book. It shows that STEM concepts can be practical and that scientists can be cool. Students who read it might not necessarily become engineers or astronauts, but they will gain an appreciation for the ways that science, technology, engineering, and math influence the world around them. They might not travel to Mars, but they might catch that spark of curiosity and become the next innovators here on Earth. —GILLIAN KING-CARGILE, Northern Illinois University STEM Read

inspirational quest for a meaningful life and shares the powerful lessons— about self-discovery, service, and risk-taking—that led him to a new definition of success for our times. The Work is the story of how one young man traced a path through the world to find his life’s purpose. Wes Moore graduated from a difficult childhood in the Bronx and Baltimore to an adult life that would find him at some of the most critical moments in our recent history: as a combat officer in Afghanistan; a White House fellow in a time of wars abroad and disasters at home; and a Wall Street banker during the financial crisis. In this insightful book, Moore shares the lessons he learned from people he met along the way—from the brave Afghan translator who taught him to find his fight, to the resilient young students in Katrina-ravaged Mississippi who showed him the true meaning of grit, to his late grandfather, who taught him to find grace in service. That’s where we find the work that lasts. An intimate narrative about finding meaning in a volatile age, The Work will inspire readers to see how we can each find our own path to purpose and help create a better world.

he idea that we want to do our part—but are unsure of exactly how to do it—is not unusual. We start off our adult lives full of ideas about how we want to live, how we want to contribute to the greater good—how we want to do our part—but are immediately presented with the thorny puzzle of figuring out how to marry our instincts to action. When we are children our lives are relentlessly paced—someone tells us when to get up, when to go to bed, when to eat, when to study. I have two beautiful children under the age of four and their calendars are already stuffed with activities. But something important shifts in the way we live almost from the moment we leave school. Our adult lives begin with a first moment of stillness. We leave school and there’s no next grade to go to, no one to tell us how to spend our time—we are faced with an intimidating absence of inevitable next steps. Possibilities and choices suddenly abound. And for a lot of us it’s terrifying. There was once a clear answer to this terror. It used to be that we could extend childhood’s safe rhythms by burrowing deep into large institutions—the military or a corporation or a university or the government—and moving up the ranks, like a kid getting passed from grade to grade. This brought a measure of security, but it required submerging yourself in an institution and letting that institution’s logic guide the most productive moments of your life. This was in many ways the contract I was brought up to believe in. But my generation was among the last raised to believe there was a way to cheat the blank future by burrowing ourselves in paternal institutions and following the traditional paths. We are now confronted by a world where those institutions are in crisis—and where the old model of work has been thrown open, not only because so many forces (robotics, the Web, big data, a global labor market) are conspiring to eliminate jobs and even whole industries, but because many of the jobs that remain can feel unsatisfying on a personal level. David Graeber, an anthropologist and activist, recently wrote this about the contemporary state of work: “Huge swathes of people, in Europe and North America in particular, spend their entire working lives performing tasks they secretly believe do not really need to be performed. The moral and spiritual damage that comes from this situation is profound. It is a scar across our collective soul. . . . How can one even begin to speak of dignity in labour when one secretly feels one’s job should not exist?” This has created a great deal of angst for all of us who’ve had to live through these shifts. But it’s also created a greater sense of urgency around the task of designing our own lives to tap into our own specific ideals, talents, and resources— to find ways of not just working to live, but finding the work of our lives.

HOW WE LEARN The Surprising Truth About When, Where, and Why It Happens by Benedict Carey

From an early age, it is drilled into our heads: Restlessness, distraction, and ignorance are the enemies of success. We’re told that learning is all self-discipline, that we must confine ourselves to designated study areas, turn off the music, and maintain a strict ritual if we want to ace that test, memorize that presentation, or nail that piano recital. But what if almost everything we were told about learning is wrong? And what if there was a way to achieve more with less effort? In How We Learn, award-winning science reporter Benedict Carey sifts through decades of education research and landmark studies to uncover the truth about how our brains absorb and retain information. What he discovers is that, from the moment we are born, we are all learning quickly, efficiently, and automatically; but in our zeal to systematize the process we have ignored valuable, naturally enjoyable learning tools like forgetting, sleeping, and daydreaming. Is a dedicated desk in a quiet room really the best way to study? Can altering your routine improve your recall? Are there times when distraction is good? Is repetition necessary? Carey’s search for answers to these questions yields a wealth of strategies that make learning more a part of our everyday lives—and less of a chore.

was a grind. That was the word for it back in the day: the kid who sweated the details, who made flashcards. A striver, a grade-hog, a worker bee— that kid—and I can see him clearly now, almost 40 years later, bent over a textbook, squinting in the glow of a cheap desk lamp. I can see him early in the morning, too, up and studying at 5 o’clock: sophomore year, high school, his stomach on low boil because he can’t quite master—what? The quadratic formula? The terms of the Louisiana Purchase? The Lend-Lease policy, the mean value theorem, Eliot’s use of irony as a metaphor for . . . some damn thing? Never mind. It’s long gone, the entire curriculum. All that remains is the dread. Time’s running out, there’s too much to learn, and some of it is probably beyond reach. But there’s something else in there, too, a lower frequency signal that takes a while to pick up, like a dripping faucet in a downstairs bathroom: doubt. The nagging sense of having strayed off the trail when the gifted students were arriving at the lodge, without breaking a sweat. Like so many others, I grew up believing that learning was all self-discipline: a hard, lonely climb up the sheer rock face of knowledge to where the smart people lived. I was driven more by a fear of falling than by anything like curiosity or wonder. That fear made for an odd species of student. To my siblings, I was Mr. Perfect, the serious older brother who got (almost) all As. To my classmates, I was the Invisible Man, too unsure of my grasp of the material I was studying to speak up. I don’t blame my young self, my parents or my teachers for this split personality. How could I? The only strategy any of us knew for deepening learning—

drive yourself like a sled dog—works, to some extent; effort is the single most important factor in academic success. Yet that was the strategy I was already using. I needed something more, something different— and I felt it had to exist. The first hint that it did, for me, came in the form of other students, those two or three kids in algebra or history who had—what was it?—a cool head, an ability to do their best without that hunted-animal look. It was as if they’d been told it was OK not to understand everything right away; that it would come in time; that their doubt was itself a valuable instrument. But the real conversion experience for me came later, when applying for college. College was the mission all along, of course. And it failed; I failed. I sent out a dozen applications and got shut down. All those years laboring before the mast and, in the end, I had nothing to show for it but a handful of thin envelopes and one spot on a waiting-list—to a college I attended for a year, before dropping out. What went wrong? I had no idea. I aimed too high, I wasn’t perfect enough, I choked on the SATs. No matter. I was too busy feeling rejected to think about it. No, worse than rejected. I felt like a chump. Like I’d been scammed by some bogus self-improvement cult, paid dues to a guru who split with the money. So, after dropping out, I made an attitude adjustment. I loosened my grip. I stopped sprinting. Broadened the margins, to paraphrase Thoreau. It wasn’t so much a grand strategy—I was a teenager, I couldn’t see more than three feet in front of my face—as a simple instinct to pick my head up and look around.

MINDSET The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D.

World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea—the power of our mindset. Dweck explains why it’s not just our abilities and talent that bring us success—but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn’t foster selfesteem and lead to accomplishment, but may actually jeopardize success. With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades, as well as reach our own goals—personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs, and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.

“A good book is one whose advice you believe. A great book is one whose advice you follow. I have found Carol Dweck’s work on mindsets invaluable in my own life, and even life-changing in my attitudes toward the challenges that, over the years, become more demanding rather than less. This is a book that can change your life, as its ideas have changed mine.” —Robert J. Sternberg , IBM P rofessor of E ducation and P sychology at Yale University, director of the PACE C enter of Yale U niversity, and author of Successful Intelligence

“Highly recommended . . . an essential read for parents, teachers [and] coaches . . . as well as for those who would like to increase their own feelings of success and fulfillment.” —Library Journal (starred review)

“A serious, practical book. Dweck’s overall assertion that rigid thinking benefits no one, least of all yourself, and that a change of mind is always possible, is welcome.” —Publishers Weekly

About the author CAROL S. DWECK, Ph.D., is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading researchers in the fields of personality, social psychology, and developmental psychology. She has been the William B. Ransford Professor of Psychology at Columbia University and is now the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. W

hen I was in the 6th grade, my teacher Mrs. Wilson seated us around the room in IQ order. Only the highest IQ students were allowed to erase the blackboard or carry the flag in the school assembly. Mrs. Wilson believed that your IQ score embodied not just your inborn intelligence, but your character as well. This was my first and most powerful experience with the fixed mindset—the idea that your traits are fixed and that they define you. I have devoted my life to liberating students from this mindset. Mindset introduces students to a body of research they can use in their lives, especially during this challenging time. Every year I teach freshmen, and I am continually struck by what a struggle it is for so many of them, even the most academically prepared. Challenges are coming at them from every direction. If they’re away at school for the first time, they have to learn how to regulate themselves. Many of them have never gone to sleep or woken up without parental intervention. New social challenges await them. And many are confronting academic work that is much harder than anything they’ve done before. My students find the growth mindset—the idea that your qualities can be developed over time—to be critical to their adjustment. They constantly use the growth mindset principles to take on new challenges. Rigorous research shows that it can be very helpful for students to learn about the growth mindset in college. It can positively affect motivation, grade point averages, and self-esteem. In particular, it can help students transcend negative stereotypes, such as women in math or minority students in a variety of subjects, helping them understand that they can acquire these skills through good instruction and sustained effort. Mindset has also played a key role in professional development. Many educational institutions have made it required reading for their administrators and teachers because the book is full of crucial information about how to motivate students. The same thing is happening with athletic organizations, in which, according to coaches, a growth mindset is proving essential for the development of an athlete’s (and a coach’s) potential. Business schools and business organizations are using Mindset to encourage effective leadership and necessary innovation in times of change. Many professors who have adopted Mindset in their courses tell me that the students enjoy it tremendously, that it provokes excellent class discussions, and that it lends itself to useful and interesting exercises. For example, students can write about something they would like to change in themselves and how they would go about it, and keep a journal of their changes. Students can be asked to do something “outrageously” growth mindset (something they might not have otherwise done) toward their goal of change, and they can write about it or share this with their classmates. Professors have told me that many of their students gain the courage to pursue their most valued goals, ones they may not have pursued in the past because of the fear of failure. Almost every day, I get wonderful letters from educators who have assigned Mindset. I hope I will get a letter from you.

y a debut novelist, Dodgers is a dark, haunting, coming-of-age narrative story of a young man named East who works for an L.A. drug gang. “Every now and then, the publication of a novel seems to come at the perfect time. Bill Beverly’s Dodgers is one of those novels: a coming of age narrative that navigates a modern urban landscape with the same mythic gravitas that Cormac McCarthy’s Border Trilogy brought to the mid-century American Southwest. The journey of brothers East and Ty is written in language that is immediate, accessible, and poetic in its depictions of both brutality and grace. The last line of the novel is impossible to read without considering the #blacklivesmatter, and equally impossible to forget.” —Amy Jurskis, English Department Head at Oxbridge Academy Do not order before 4/5/2016.
