The

is a festival that started in 1932 by Paul Ord and The Young Men’s Business League to promote and spread the word of the pride of the Rio Grande Valley “The Citrus Industry” and its bountiful winter harvest. Only in the Rio Grande Valley Texas can you find groves of citrus trees filled with oranges, lemons and our world famous RED grapefruits. Our grapefruits have the deepest rose toned flesh that labels them as red, so sweet that no sugar needs to be added. Our Grapefruits are the pride of our growers in the Rio Grande Valley & the State of Texas none others in our country have been able to compare to these. 1 full year is needed to prepare for an event this size starting with the dignitary invitations, sponsorships, pre-pageants, applications and marketing all require pre- planning.

Citrus Youth Show Exhibit It started in 1932 and has been held at every fair to the present. Youth ranging in ages from elementary School through High School from all communities and cities in the Rio Grande Valley involved in 4H and FFA are invited to participate in this event. The show is held at the Mission Chamber of Commerce Building. Students will be trained on how to judge, grow, recognize diseases, and all aspects of the Citrus Industry, that also include marketing, packaging, sales etc. There are usually between 800-1000 entries in our show. Their training starts in October to prepare for their 3 day Show in January. They will be trained and educated about the Citrus Industry by Ag teachers, Dr.’s from the U.S. Agricultural Research Center in Weslaco, Texas and local growers. Citrus is provided at no cost by the growers for this. Our hopes are that our youth will grow up and continue our traditions and encourage our agricultural citrus continued growth. Scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors that meet criteria.

Product Costume Show Brought to Mission in 1938 by Maureen Yarborough- Duncan. A past board member and volunteers chair this event where costumes are created. They will be completely covered in Citrus and Agricultural products that grow in our area. These products have been air dried, micro- waved, oven dried, etc then pulverized and used to cover the entire costume. It is believed to be the only folk art introduced in the last century. These costumes have been presented in many places throughout the years but we are the proudest of their presentation at the White House and our Capital in Austin, Texas. They have been written about in many well know magazines and newspapers and television, but, Ripley’s Believe It or Not is one we never forget to mention. This contest is open to the public contestants ages range from 8-70 years old. Trainings are held (3-4 hours each) for the designers where they are taught how to process the agricultural products before applying to the costume. As many as 300 hours per costumes are spent in making them. The contestants collect and harvest the products all year long. This event takes place in January at the Mission Community Center.

Parade of Oranges

Started in 1932 our parade features different float categories, marching bands, military/marching units, pageant contestants, dignitaries, horses, non-profits, commercial entries, etc. participants and spectators come from all over the Rio Grande Valley. The most popular are the product entries. They are completely covered in citrus and agricultural products. This is held in January. Spectators and participants add up to an estimated 100,000. The Parade is held down town on Conway Avenue the length is 21/2 miles long.

Fiesta Fun Fair

This consists of exhibits that include educational and commercial information for the public. You will also find arts& crafts vendors, food and citrus vendors, variety of entertainment and displays. It is held in January and is a one day event and open to the public from 10am -10pm. Held downtown at La Placita Park. There is no gate fee/entry fee to the public.

Coronation of King Citrus and Queen Citrianna

A King is selected by the Texas Citrus Kings Association. Our Pageant is made up of young ladies from all over the Rio Grande Valley vying for the Queens position. The king and queen will be crowned that night. The contestant is appointed by their City or community and will represent the agricultural product that their area is known for wearing an elegant ball gown in the color of their product. They must research the history and the importance and economic impact their product makes to their communities. They must all research and learn about the Citrus Industry. The Queen and royal court are presented with scholarships (4). They will travel and represent us at the parades and events that we attend through- out our State of Texas promoting the Citrus Industry.

Royal Gala/Showcase

Formal/black tie event (Ball) this will be the first time that the contestants will be presented to the public, their families, dignitaries and Fiesta sponsors are invited to this and it has been held yearly since 1932. Guests and contestant will enjoy a sit down dinner and orchestra (dance). Citrus kings will also be featured and recognized. It is held in January.

Mini Float Contest

3rd through 6th graders from all elementary schools are invited in October to participate in this contest. It is held at the Speer Memorial Library during the last week of January. The contestants are to create miniature parade floats that must be covered in citrus products and other agricultural products. A short training is held for participants. Judges will select winners.
