Welcome to your brand new student magazine, ‘Radar’, which has evolved from a student-led rebrand of our former magazine ‘Reform’. I would like to tirelessly thank all those involved with putting this edition together, I hope you are pleased with the final product! Student media is exactly what it says it is – led by, run for and relevant to students. It is all about reclaiming communication channels to make them entirely relevant to students. Making student media a success is a huge priority for me this year so if you would like to get involved with future publications of this magazine or other outlets, such as our radio station, please contact me at any time! This edition is focused on Freshers Week and is aimed at welcoming all of our new students to RGU with lots of useful information, hints and tips! Are you ready? Are you ready to meet loads of new people? Dress like an idiot for 9 days straight? Experience Irn Bru for breakfast? Cook for yourself for the first time? Lose all concept of time? Are you ready? It can only mean one thing – Fresher’s Week 2013 is upon us! Welcome to the best week of your life, and that’s no exaggeration. You’ve come here to study, and there will be plenty of time for that, but first let’s have some fun! Get ready for 9 days packed with fun activities, meeting new people, useful information, and freebies, SO many freebies! This is your first experience of student life in Aberdeen – let’s make your first impression a brilliant one. The Union team, along with your elected officers, have been working hard over the past few months to make the line-up as epic as possible. Freshers Week has something for everyone – from city tours, to movie screenings, to taking over Union Terrace Gardens, and so much more. There are freebies, themed nights, big headline acts and the list goes on! The team has worked tirelessly to make

Each night the Union’s city centre bars will host a range of events to get you in the party mood and kick your night off. We have also partnered with one of Aberdeen’s biggest nightclubs, Tiger Tiger, as they host our headline events for the first time, find out more about the week lineup and our Freshers Week venues in the following pages. Every day of Freshers Week is an opportunity to try new things and meet new people. Make the most of your Freshers Week and try as many of the events that we have to offer - but don’t burn yourself out! Who are these people and what do they do? Meet Paul, Steve & Paddy, your elected Presidents. This means that they take a year out of their studies in order to work full time representing you on many different levels throughout the University. They are involved with lots of campaigns and initiatives to make sure that students at RGU are happy with all areas of University life. The team of Presidents also works closely with our Vice Presidents who, instead of being paid to work full-time, give up their own time and volunteer with us, helping to ensure that the various needs of RGU students are represented to the Union and the University. If you have an issue that falls under their remit, get in touch with the relevant VP and they will work with both the Union and the University to help you resolve it as quickly as possible.

how did they get their jobs? In order to become a President or Vice President at RGU, you must go through the Unionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Student Election process. Our main Election takes place in March, and involves battling it out against different candidates, encouraging fellow students to vote for you. A By-election happens in November in order to fill any remaining vacant positions. Our elections are extremely popular, with around 1,500 students taking the time to vote each year. If you are interested in running for a position in our next set of Elections speak to Paul, our President of Communications & Democracy.

SISTER BLISS / FAITHLESS DJ SEt tiger tiger sunday 22nd sept

As DJ, producer, writer and founding member of Faithless, one of the most unique and influential dance acts in the world, Sister Bliss was the creative force behind international club smashes such as ‘God is a DJ’, ‘We Come One’, and of course, ‘Insomnia’. She has become one of Britain’s most popular figures in the Electronica scene, as well as an in demand producer, having recently worked with Example on his album ‘Playing In The Shadows’. This summer she took the Faithless name to sell out crowds right across the globe – from the world famous Ushuaia club in Ibiza, to hometown shows at Brixton Academy, and all the way to Miami for Ultra Festival. “It’s an exciting time at the moment” she explained during an interview to promote her DJ sets, “I’m DJing all over the globe playing loads of new music that I’ve been working on.”

and guitar, dance music was not Sister Bliss’ first love, but it is clear to see that after 20 years of touring with Faithless, it is where her passion lies; “I’ve never said that dance music is perfect” she tells Jules Evans from the Philosophy for Life blog, “But there can be a perfection in it, in the moment, when the DJ drops that tune, and the crowd all feel it at the same time, and you get that connection. children in need This year we dressed as ‘Where’s Wally’ and hit

the pubs and clubs of Aberdeen to raise money for this great cause. RGU: RAG were fortunate enough to be invited to join with the live filming of BBC Children in Need at Aberdeen Beach Ballroom. We raised a great £302 for CIN, and managed to sneak our faces on to the telly!

world aids day On December 1st we worked alongside the LGBT+ Society to raise money and awareness for the National Aids Trust. Taking part in a bag pack, campus collection and street collection, we raised a brilliant £540.43

underwear fashion show

christmas bag pack RGU:RAG brought some Christmas cheer to the

shoppers of Aberdeen and raised £203.32 in aid of the Archie Foundation at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

gaming donation drive We worked alongside RGU:Gaming Society on

their Christmas gaming donation drive. A fantastic 220 games were collected, which were gratefully received by VSA and the Archie Foundation.

valentines bake sale This Valentines Day we spread the love through sweets and treats in aid of the British Heart Foundation raising £133.23.

sharing the love in an alternative way This Valentines week, RAG supported local charity Cyrenians to prepare emergency food packs for those in need across the city.

marie curie cancer care daffodil appeal In March we joined forces with Marie Curie Cancer Care in their Daffodil Appeal raising £476.82 contributing to a fantastic £31,000 raised in the North East of Scotland.

breast cancer care big pink bucket collection This Mothers’ Day, we joined forces with Breast

Cancer Care to take part in the ‘Big Pink Bucket Collection’ Campaign to raise money are awareness of Breast Cancer across the city, raising £139.83 from a pub crawl collection.

student achievement awards We were privileged to win the Robert Gordon

University Students’ Union Award for Continued Excellence 2012/13 for the third consecutive year. This was a night of great celebration, not only with our RAG members but all societies and volunteers, as we celebrated the amazing work carried out at RGU.

re-generate ur community Working alongside Red Frogs Aberdeen and the

Union, we volunteered at Ruthrieston Community Centre to help out with a number of projects, this involved clearing, cleaning and gardening tasks… as well as ensuring we all had fun at the same time.

rag week 2013 RAG Week 2013 took place from Wednesday

20th to Tuesday 26th February to raise money for the Meningitis Research Foundation. We had a week full of fundraising events raising a fantastic £233.60.

Climb Kilimanjaro 4 Kids This summer, 21 students set off to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the largest mountain in Africa and the world’s largest free standing mountain at a towering 19,341 ft above sea level. The challenge was in aid of Childreach International with students managing to raise over £58,000. The students were fortunate to be able to visit a Childreach supported school and met the local children in the Moshi region of Tanzania prior to the ascent up the mountain in order to see where their fundraising goes. The climb which led students from the Machame Gate towards the Uhuru Peak was a gruelling four days accent and two days descent of long trekking.

torcher parade In April RGU:RAG once again took part in the

Aberdeen Student Charities Campaign annual Torcher Parade. RAG went Hawaiian this year to bring a bit of sunshine to Aberdeen. Volunteers spent the day hammering, gluing and painting to get their float complete. The evening parade went along Schoolhill, down to Queens cross, along Albyn place and then Union street. The music and atmosphere was exciting for our volunteers performing on the float and our collectors on the ground raising money from the crowds out to watch.

rag’s 10th birthday celebration This May not only brought our annual cheque

presentation to this years charities but also saw the celebration of our 10th year of existence. We celebrated in style, and held a fabulous RAG Birthday Party at the Rox Hotel, and were pleased to welcome past, current and future Raggies, charities and supporters to join us in our celebrations. A number of our charities were on hand to receive novelty cheques and celebrate the current end of year total which stood at £62874 for local, national and international charities.

I remember exactly what it was like to be a Fresher; downing my first Messy Bomb in the Union, cutting some wild shapes on the dancefloor, then gulping down a kebab and garlic sauce at the end of the night - it was one of the best years of my life! Now that I am an older, wiser, and more attractive RGUer, with a wealth of student life experience, I can now impart my wisdom to you, my Fresher Babies...

home away from home

• Don’t forget about your old friends. Remember to Skype or send the odd Snapchat to keep in touch! • Personalise your room! A few soft toy pandas, a lava lamp and maybe some incense sticks. Get a picture collage on your walls with a mixture of old friends and new! (Using blue tac obviously, don’t upset those RA’s!) • Flatmates. You’ll live with them for the next year, so make an effort to get on. Organise a flat social every week such as a ‘Lads DreamGirls Movie night’ or a ‘Girls Call of Duty Tournament’. • Don’t go home every weekend. Not only will you miss some epic nights out, but you will probably spend loads of cash on travel (You could have bought a new outfit, a few pints in the Union, or gone out for dinner with that money!)

EFFECTIVE SPENDING

• An NUS Extra card and your Student Card will get you discounts and freebies! Make sure you don’t miss out on that free McFlurry or cheeseburger at McDonalds! Even if you don’t eat it, you can give it to your pal! (I give mine to a homeless guy). • Before you buy contents insurance, check the ‘contents away from home’ section of your parents’ household policy. This might already cover you, or you might be able to get it extended at a small cost. • Brand shiny new books are nice, but most you will probably only use them for three months! Save some cash and buy second-hand books, which are available from Edgeworn, the Union’s bookshop! • The Union’s drinks are VERY reasonablly priced! Make sure you start your night there.

NIGHT OUT

• Stay Safe! • Drink Responsibly. Don’t go mixing wine, beer and spirits - that is not a cocktail your stomach can handle. More importantly, don’t just drink for the sake of drinking. You won’t make it to the end of the night and you will spend more money! • Don’t chance Fake ID. Most doormen will see people trying to get away with this every day. They will confiscate the ID and the Police will get involved. • Don’t bring too much money out with you. You will end up buying another, and another, and another. Before you know it, you will have spent £60 in your first club. Set a budget for your night and keep some money aside for getting home and for Chips Cheese and Gravy! • Bring a Light Jacket. We live in Aberdeen, so don’t think you can just rely on your ‘booze blanket’. • Substance Abuse. Don’t do drugs. Enough said. • Tomatoes - the golden chalice of the hangover cure! Eat one before you go to bed, and BOOM, no hangover! This may be a myth, but it works for me. Supposedly they contain a toxin that keeps you well hydrated.

SEX

• Wear a condom lads! Don’t be that guy. • If someone is far too drunk, do the responsible thing and get them home safely. Don’t take this as an opportunity to think you can get lucky - sex should always be consensual. • Don’t try to be a Pornstar with someone you’ve just met! There is no need to smartphone your antics with pics, videos and sexy snapchats, your sexcapades will probably end up online. • Condoms and Lube are free from me! There’s no need to pay! • Start coursework early. Don’t put yourself through that frantic night-before stress. • Facebook your Tutor Groups! This will be handy for, “What did you put for question 4?”, “Did anyone find a good article for this?”, as well as a good team-builder, “Class night out at the Union tonight?” • Befriend your lecturers! If they like your class, they might give you more exam hints. • Use the library. It not only has a bonnie view, but it’s full of books, books that will teach you things! • Never hesitate to ask for help. If there is something you do not understand, send your lecturers or tutors an email - it’s what they are they for. • Remember why you are here at RGU. You want a degree. You want a fancy job, a nice car, and big bucks? Uni is fun, but you will need to put in the hours working.

• Don’t stay in cliques, this isn’t Mean Girls, and you’re not Regina George. • Try making a new friend every day! • Flat visits. Go chappint on the neighbours’ door and introduce yourself. I did this in my first few days as a Fresher and by the end of the week I knew every person in my halls!

get involved

• Join anything and everything! Clubs and Societies will not only give the hobbies section in your CV a boost, but you will learn new skills, meet lots of new people and you will no doubt have lots of fun too.

think positive

• There may be times where you stress, and it may all feel too much. Homesickness, coursework deadlines, looming exams, financial struggle, always remember that you are NEVER alone! Myself and RGU:Union are here to support you. Come and speak to us, even if we can’t help you out directly, we will almost definitely know who can.

healthy body, healthy mind

• Keeping physically active encourages a healthy positive attitude! Regular workouts, sporting activities (and sex!) are all exercise. • Join a Sports Club. We have loads to choose from, and you don’t need any previous experience to join. I’m thinking about joining the Rugby team... #ComeAtMeBoys. • If you are a really keen bean then you can opt to walk or cycle to Garthdee rather than taking the bus. You will also save money which is always handy!

• RGUers know how to have a good time! Never take things too seriously, it’s important that you enjoy your time here.

Things to do in

Aberdeen let’s go to the beach, beach! Located on the east side of the city centre, Aberdeen Beach is worth a visit for a quick walk, swim, surf, or if you’re lucky you could even get a tan! You might even spot the odd seal or bottle-nosed dolphin off the coast. There are other beaches in the surrounding areas as well, Balmedie is well worth the trip, where you can play on the sand dunes. It has also hosted some infamous beach parties and late night raves in the past!

codonas & sunset boulevard Check out the rides at Codona’s amusement park, go wild and gamble on the 2p machines, make the most of the student bowling nights, have a go at the dodgems and much more! A visit to Codonas or Sunset Boulevard is a must, you can even take a trip up the Grampian Eye for a stunning view of the entire city.

watch the dons Watch the mighty Aberdeen take on the best that Scottish football has to offer at one of the city’s most well-known landmarks; Pittodrie stadium! Student tickets are available, a visit to the football is the perfect opportunity to see the locals in their natural habitat. You might even learn a few new words while your there…

transition extreme Visit Aberdeen’s indoor extreme sports centre to try your hand at skateboarding, climbing, BMXing, skating and more! The venue also has a brand practise room and hosts bands and DJ nights.

This is a regular feature which takes on Union Terrace for 3 days every couple of months to celebrate the diversity of Aberdeen through the medium of shopping! Meet new people, have a munch of a German sausage, or buy some cultural dress. The possibilities are endless, check out the next market on November 1st.

go karting Take out all your frustrations or Grand Theft Auto dreams and zoom around at Kartstart, located at the Bridge of Don. Good banter with friends or perfect for a bonding session with your sports team or society!

Sort out your beer belly and head down to the gym, or go hill walking! Aberdeen has a good range of facilities to keep fit, including the University’s very own sports centre, RGU: SPORT. You’ll find world class facilities includes a gym, swimming pool, fitness classes and a climbing wall. You can get a discounted student membership from just £89 per year – decent!

Aberdeen’s Linx Ice Arena is located at the beach area and plays host to figure skating, ice hockey, curling and open sessions for those who just want to try and make it round the circuit without falling flat on their arse.

Aberdeen is also a short distance from the Cairngorm National Park, where some of the country’s highest and most scenic mountains can be found. We also have much closer frequently walked hills such as Bennachie, which is located just 20 miles from the city.

This is one of the cities most popular tourist attractions, located right beside the Union. The gallery has a range of contemporary and older works, and a range of special exhibitions throughout the year. Lots of works to see and it is absolutely free to pop in!

go ape! Located at Crathes Castle near Banchory, we can officially confirm that this will not turn you into an actual animal, but is in fact an obstacle course with tree-top trail, zip wires and swings. Give it a go for a really good day out, and a welcome break from all of your studying!

From major headline acts to open mic nights and music sessions – the Aberdeen music scene has something for everyone at a range of venues. Major acts tend to frequent at places like the Music Hall and the AECC, however there is also regular live music at local venues like the Lemon Tree and traditional pubs. You’ll find big DJ’s regularly frequenting clubs such as The Forum, Snafu and Tiger Tiger.

It’s easy to get lost round Aberdeen’s Union Square shopping centre, but you’ll never get bored! Sporting a wide selection of restaurants, shops and a cinema – you are likely to find something to spend your hard earned SAAS pennies on. Other shopping options include the nearby Trinity Centre, Bon Accord Centre, St Nicholas Centre, and the Academy Centre, which can be found right across the road from the Union.

comedy nights Aberdeen has a strong local comedy scene, with regular nights being held at our own Students’ Union as well as ‘Breakneck Comedy’ events across the city. Check out some of the UK’s biggest names such as Kevin Bridges, Michael McIntyre, Jason Manford and others who regularly make a stop at Aberdeen when they are on tour.

go to the theatre The beautifully decorated His Majesty’s Theatre, located on Schoolhill, is famnous for hosting opera and major musicals such as ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Hairspray’, ‘Dirty Dancing’, ‘Grease’ and others!
