City of Oakland Park The City of Oakland Park is approximately 8.6 square miles in land size with a population of more than 42,000 residents. Named for a massive stand of trees that once lined the Middle River, Oakland Park stands where Floranda once stood before the 1926 hurricane destroyed the area. The City prides itself on its deep-rooted traditions and history. Its library is one of the few remaining city-owned libraries and a center for community activities. The local Oakland Park Elementary School is the oldest functioning school in Broward County and was declared a national landmark in 1988.
