30 Years of Local Land Conservation

Conserving uncommon places that become our community’s shared spaces

Blue Hill Heritage Trust is a community-based, membership-supported nationally accredited nonprofit land conservation organization founded by local residents to help conserve land and water of special ecological, scenic, cultural, recreational or agricultural significance throughout the Blue Hill Peninsula landscape. Our Trust currently protects over 7,000 acres in seven Peninsula towns through outright ownership or by holding conservation easements on privately owned land. We maintain over 25 miles of hiking trails for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors.

Welcome T

he Blue Hill Peninsula encompasses the towns of Blue Hill, Brooklin, Brooksville, Castine, Penobscot and Sedgwick. Blue Hill is the largest town, and is the region’s service center. Along with Penobscot, Blue Hill is the gateway to the rest of the Peninsula, and to Deer Isle and Stonington. The landscape here is marked by sweeping views of the blueberry barrens and the sea. Tucked in among the ridges, valleys and the jagged coastline, you’ll find adventure of all kinds, from a day on the water and an evening of live music to a solitary morning walk and an afternoon of gallery tours and shopping. You’ll find our communities to be diverse, independent yet interconnected. In all of these places, you may strike up a conversation with a lobsterman, boatbuilder or sailor who knows these waters like the back of his hand. In all of these places, you will find locally sourced food and highly skilled craftspeople and artists. In all of these places you will find evidence of the resourcefulness, dry wit and creativity that has defined our region’s culture for centuries. This region was settled in the mid 1700s, its early economy centered around ship building and quarrying. Lumbering, lobstering, fishing and farming have played an important role in our economy and culture since the earliest days. By the late 1800s the region had become a summer destination. Today, many of these industries coexist with a thriving art, music and food scene to create this unique place called The Blue Hill Peninsula. Welcome. We’re so glad you came!

rom its earliest days, the sea has defined this region as a center for boat building, coastal trading, sailing, fishing and recreation. The Peninsula’s many harbors and inlets are dotted by lobster boats, sailboats of all size and type, smallcraft and motorboats. Working and recreational waterfronts coexist all over the peninsula and Deer Isle. From Stonington, (whose lobstermen and women deliver the highest lobster landings in the state) to the deep, protected cove of Buck’s Harbor in Brooksville, to Castine’s bustling harbor, the ocean continues to beckon. Blue Hill’s public landing is in South Blue Hill, off of Route 175. It is inaccessible by boat at low tide. Sedgwick and Brooksville share a public landing at Walker’s Pond, off Route 15/175 (on Cooper Farm Rd.) in Sedgwick. This is a fresh water landing. Farm to table & AGRICULTURE

T

he state of Maine has more than 1.4 million acres in farmland (about 8,200 farms), 60% of which is held in small farms of less than 100 acres. Maine now ranks first in agricultural sales, in part due to the thriving network of farmers markets, farm stands, and to farm-to-table restaurants. Agricultural production here on the Peninsula embodies the interdependence of culture, food and a healthy economy. This Peninsula is home to roughly 40 farms. They are small family-run farms, committed to the land and to producing high quality produce, dairy and meat products. Farmers here produce year-round, despite our notorious winters. There’s a farmers market in every town, you’ll find farm stands all around the peninsula, you can buy from the on-line farmers market FarmDrop (see ad pg. 8), or you can have a care package of locally produced goods delivered to you from Peninsula Provisions. Farm-to-table dining offers the finest collaboration between the regions talented chefs and its dedicated farmers. Across the Peninsula, chefs work with local food producers to deliver the finest dining experience - they can tell you where your steak or oyster was raised, what type of heirloom tomato you’ve been served and why the local cream makes the best flan. The peninsula’s farmers markets are homegrown, community driven markets offering a changing mix of farm products including produce, meat, dairy, and eggs. Local coffee roasters, tea producers, the local saltworks, beekeepers, bakers, fishermen & women, and craftspeople are also wellrepresented. Each market reflects the nature of its town, and each trip to the market is a unique experience. 16 | Blue Hill Peninsula Chamber of Commerce

Blue Hill

BLUE HILL TOWN OFFICE 18 Union St. | P.O. Box 412 Blue Hill, ME 04614 (207) 374-2281

Nestled between Blue Hill Mountain and the protective arm of Blue Hill Bay lies the town of Blue Hill. In 1762, the town’s founders sailed up the bay, disembarked at Mill Island near the reversing falls and built their homes there. Incorporated in 1789, Blue Hill first made a name for itself as a shipbuilding and lumber center, it’s sawmills and craftspeople turning out brigs and schooners, masts, cordwood and shingles. Granite from Blue Hill was prized for its high quality and made its way to such notable buildings as the US Stock Exchange and the Brooklyn Bridge. By the mid-1800s, the town became a summer destination. Today, Blue Hill is rich with artists and craftspeople, excellent food, gracious lodging, art galleries and small shops. Blue Hill welcomes visitors and residents alike to hike its forests and to canoe, kayak and sail its waters. As a service center, the community offers excellent public and private schools, a library that has been the cornerstone of intellectual and social activity in town since its founding in 1796, and a full-service hospital. Blue Hill offers community events such as the traditional blueberry pancake breakfast at the Congo Church, a summer concert series featuring the steel drum band Flash! in The Pans, classical music at Kneisel Hall and Blue Hill Bach, and choral music by the Bagaduce Chorale. The Memorial Day Parade, the well-known Blue Hill Fair, and both a winter and summer farmers market are just some of the social, recreational and musical events Blue Hill has to offer.

A small, lively town at the southern end of the Peninsula, Brooklin was initially settled as part of the town of Sedgwick. Brooklin was incorporated independently in 1849. With miles of beautiful shoreline come the town’s chief industries of fishing and boatbuilding. The town is world-famous for its boatbuilding history and is home The Brooklin Boat Yard, The Wooden Boat School and Wooden Boat Magazine, along with many smaller builders and design shops. Brooklin offers a charming town center with a beautiful library, small shops, galleries, groceries and provisions. Along its winding roads, travelers will catch stunning glimpses of the Benjamin River and the Eggemoggin Reach. Brooksville

BROOKSVILLE TOWN OFFICE One Town House Rd. Brooksville, ME 04617 (207) 326-4518

The town of Brooksville dates back to the early 1800’s. It encompasses the villages of Harborside on Cape Rosier (also known simply as ‘the Cape’), South Brooksville, home to Buck’s Harbor Market and the white steepled church made famous by Robert McCloskey’s illustrations, North and South Brooksville, and Brooksville Corner. Brooksville’s rolling fields and woodlands, it’s coves and harbors and its seat at the mouth of the Bagaduce River make it a popular destination for boating, kayaking hiking and for simply getting away from it all. Shell fishing, aquaculture and farming are staples of the town’s economy. Holbrook Island Sanctuary State Park on Cape Rosier P offers 7.5 miles of oceanfront and woodland hiking, diverse ecosystems, and beach access. The Park is maintained by The Friends of Holbrook Island Sanctuary, and can be accessed from the Cape Rosier Rd. For more information, including park maps, visit www.friendsofholbrook.org.

Penobscot

PENOBSCOT TOWN OFFICE One Southern Bay Rd. | P.O. Box 4 Penobscot, ME 04476 (207) 326-4364

The small, quiet town of Penobscot was one of the earliest settlements on the Peninsula. It’s interior marshes, ponds and the Northern Bay are popular destinations for birding, leisure fishing, kayaking and boating. Incorporated in 1787, the town remains a treasure trove of the region’s history. The Penobscot Historical Society and the town host an annual celebration of the town during Penobscot Days in mid-summer.

Castine

CASTINE TOWN OFFICE Emerson Hall | 67 Court St. | P.O. Box 204 Castine, ME 04421 (207) 326-4502

Settled in 1604, the historic town of Castine is one of the oldest in the nation and the only town on the Peninsula to have been occupied at various times by the French, the Dutch and the English. Its strategic location at the mouth of the Penobscot River estuary, along with such colorful figures as Paul Revere and the Baron de St. Castin, made the town a notable trading and maritime center, and a prominent player in the fight for American independence. Today, Castine offers walking tours of its historic buildings, including three forts and Dyce’s Head Lighthouse. It is home to Maine Maritime Academy, and it’s downtown offers a wonderful mix of architectural gems, gracious hospitality and fine dining. Shops and galleries dot the hilly streets leading down to the waterfront. This July, Castine will welcome a replica of the French frigate L’Hermione to its harbor. The original L’Hermione brought the Marquis de LaFayette to American shores to help in the fight for independence. The ship then sailed up the coast to spy on the British garrison at ‘Magabagaduce’, later called Castine. Festivities will run from July 11th-16th and will include a reenactment and encampment, a parade of ships on Bastille Day, and will end with a street carnival and fireworks.

Sedgwick

SEDGWICK TOWN OFFICE 719 North Sedgwick Rd. | P.O. Box 40 Sedgwick, ME 04676 (207) 359-2275

The town of Sedgwick was incorporated in 1798 and named after Major General Robert Sedgwick who ousted the French from neighboring Castine. The township’s boundaries diminished as land was taken to form the neighboring towns of Brooksville and Brooklin in the early 1800’s. Early settlers found the land more suitable to grazing, quarrying and logging, due to the long, rocky ridge that runs between the Bagaduce river and Salt Pond. Blueberry barrens dot the landscape, offering scenic views, notably Caterpillar Hill. The town’s coastline stretches along the shores of the Eggemoggin Reach, separating the Peninsula from Deer Isle. The mouth of the Benjamin River offers sailors and boaters a quiet cove, and village of Sargentville is the gateway to Deer Isle.

Historical SOCIETIES

he rich history of this peninsula is kept alive and archived by historical societies in Blue Hill, Brooksville, Castine, Penobscot and Sedgwick. Each historical society is home to a wealth of pictures, artifacts, tools, and memorabilia documenting the history of each town. A visit to any of these historical societies is likely to include a conversation with the keepers of this collective history. It may come in the form of a story about a beloved daughter who moved two towns over to marry, or a tale about the year the canning factory opened. The historical societies, along with the Peninsula’s libraries, provide vast resources for those interested in genealogy research. Blue Hill Historical Society at The Holt House on Water St. in Blue Hill The Holt House, built in 1815, offers a complete look into the households of 18th and 19th century living. Both the house and carriage house hold period furniture and other household goods (including the kitchen hearth), a children’s room with toys, dolls and clothing; tools, carriages and a sleigh. Town records and other memorabilia from the 18th-early 20th century are also housed here. Hours: Tuesdays and Fridays, 1 – 4 p.m. and Saturdays, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. from July 7 through September 12. Brooksville Historical Society on Rte. 176 in Brooksville Corner The collection at this historical society includes marine artifacts, blacksmithing and farming tools along with genealogical information such as bound family histories and journals. Additional geneology resources, such as cemetery and vital records compilations are also housed on site. Hours: Wednesdays and Sundays from 1 – 4 p.m. during July and August.

Castine Historical Society Sedgwick/Brooklin Historical Society Penobscot Historical Society on Rte. 199 in Penobscot A house, barn, school house, tool shed and general store housing antique tools and farm implements, artifacts from the canning factory and dairy cooperative, along with the original telephone switchboard. Hours: Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. during the months of July and August. Sedgwick/Brooklin Historical Society on Rte. 175 in Sedgwick, across from the town Meeting House The historical society sits on land owned by Sedgwick’s first minister, The Reverend Daniel Merrill. His home, built in 1795, along with the old school house and a newly built barn, houses artifacts, equipment and memorabilia reflecting the histories and livelihoods of the town’s residents. Adjacent to the society is the Sedgwick Rural Cemetery. Hours: Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. from June through August.

Castine Historical Society at 17 School St. in Castine The historical society’s free walking map of Castine details the architecture and history of the town. The Society also houses a permanent exhibit about the Revolutionary War-era naval expedition on mouth of the Penobscot at Castine. This year, the Castine Historical Society hosts a special exhibit, ‘The French Frigate and the British Fort: L’Hermione and MagaBagaduce in 1780, opening July 12. We totally understand why you might choose to avoid a Mexican Restaurant in a barn in Maine. It’s probably not a bad strategy, to be honest, but you owe it to yourself to come and check us out. We make ridiculously delicious food, from scratch with produce sourced from farms right here on the beautiful Blue Hill peninsula and we serve it in an environment that will make you smile. Bring the kids, bring your badminton racket, and see why folks from all over the world tell us this is their favorite place to eat. Check us out!
