When her insurance premiums rose more than $1,000 in one month, Sharon Arnold, 44, was faced with the decision to discontinue her healthcare coverage. One day while reading her local paper she saw that Rex’s Mobile Mammography Unit would be in her town. “When I heard about it I knew that I had to go,” Sharon said. “It had been at least two years since I had a mammogram, and this would be free.”

About Rex Mobile Mammography Unit

Since hitting the road in 2001, Rex Healthcare’s Mobile Mammography Unit has

provided screenings to more than 22,000 women. Traveling to local businesses, churches, schools and civic groups, the unit offers women state-of-the-art digital technology for early cancer detection.

“That bus saved my life,” Sharon recounts. ”A week later, I found out that I needed to

go into Rex for further testing. Those tests found that I had Stage 2 breast cancer. I had no idea how I would pay for treatment, but Rex was there for me every step of the way.”

Regular mammography screenings can reduce a woman’s chance of dying from breast

cancer by as much as 30 percent. Yet some women go without life-saving screenings due to lack of time, transportation, resources, scheduling flexibility or access to healthcare.

That’s where the Rex Mobile Mammography Unit comes in. Thanks to community

partners like Revlon, our mammography unit sponsor, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, our screening/diagnostic testing sponsor, women in North Carolina can have life-saving mammograms.

Why Mobile?

Those who need life-saving mammograms most – low income, underserved and

uninsured women – can benefit from Rex Healthcare’s Mobile Mammography Unit.

We know that mammography is extremely valuable in the early detection of breast

cancer because it can identify abnormalities at an early stage before physical symptoms develop, resulting in a higher cure rate. However, we also know that there are disparities in breast cancer prevention and treatment.

Going mobile allows the unit to reach out to women in

need in Chatham, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Nash, Vance and Wake counties of North Carolina.

Advanced Technology

The Rex Mobile Mammography Unit utilizes an advanced

hologic digital mammography system, one of the most powerful diagnostic tools for the early detection of breast cancer available. This solution offers a number of benefits, many of which are especially advantageous for remote use:

• Faster image acquisition and image enhancement

• Easier image storage and retrieval

• Easier transmittal of images for remote consultation

• Improved images, especially in dense breast tissue,

which allows for more accurate readings

Rex and Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

Namesake of Race for the Cure®, Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart,

body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatment and endless days in the hospital, she distracted herself by brainstorming ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others, her sister Nancy G. Brinker promised to do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.

That promise is now Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Its signature Race for the Cure® walk

event has become the world’s largest source of non-profit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer.

Rex Healthcare has received grants of nearly $200,000 from the Susan G. Komen for the

Cure-NC Triangle Affiliate. Since 2006, more than 1,000 women have directly benefited from these funds. New this year, the Komen grant was expanded to include surgical intervention. This important addition to the program further expands the role of Komen and Rex in the treatment of breast cancer patients.

The 2010 Rex Gala was held Saturday, October 23 at the Raleigh Convention

Center. More than 650 leading business executives, physicians and community leaders celebrated a dynamic out-of-the-box experience with fantastic culinary delights and rousing entertainment. As the evening continued, guests enjoyed a course before an impromptu chorus by The Three Waiters. Sophisticated, spontaneous and loads of fun, The Three Waiters are a trio of talented singers posing as “real” waiters, hoaxing and amusing guests prior to giving an operatic performance a la “The Three Tenors.”

BidPal revolutionized the auction! Attendees had a blast using the handheld

bidding devices, accessing items from any point in the Convention Center. The silent and live auctions contributed $50,175 to our goal. The crowd came alive during the Call to Action! Donors
