during Lent in Antigua
W
hile carpet making has all the glamour for Semana Santa and is the big highlight for many of us, the velaciones before each procession and the Maundy Thursday sagrarios are important parts of Holy Week traditions. Velaciones, or holy vigils, take place in the churches every Friday for the Sunday processions and many other days in preparation for the larger processions. The processional figure is placed on display in the church, surrounded by ornate decorations created just for that day. These are truly impressive and are all works of art. Biblical presentations are common. The most beautiful sawdust carpets are created in front of the sculpture and then the huerto or garden, which represents the Garden of Gethsemane that Jesus visited before his crucifixion. The designs for the fruits and vegetables in the “gardens” are exquisite and always include the fragrant pod corozo brought up from the Guatemalan Pacific coast. 16

Visited by thousands of Guatemalans as one of the true traditions during Lent, the velaciones are open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. We recommend you arrive early. Late morning will afford few crowds; the churches are full after 4 p.m. Professional photographers take pictures/post cards that you may buy for Q5 at the entrance after noon. Some of us collect these as souvenirs. Street food completes the mood with the Semana Santa aromas for the velaciones as does the incense! We advise to perhaps refrain from eating but enjoy the smells. The band, composed of Guatemalan musicians, performs mostly funeral marches after 8 p.m. CDs of the music are often for sale at the church entrance. The crowds can be overwhelming since La Antigua Guatemala has the largest celebration in the world for Semana Santa — outdoing Seville a few years ago. I
remember waking at the stroke of 6 last year on the fifth Sunday of Lent in San Bartolo, a charming suburb of La Antigua Guatemala where I was living at the time. World-renowned for its exquisite colonial architecture, Antigua is also host to one of the largest and most elaborate celebrations of Cuaresma or Lent in all of Latin America. Each Sunday during Lent, and leading up to Semana Santa or Holy Week, several local congregations sponsor religious processions that depart from their church and follow various routes through the streets of Antigua before returning to their parish hours later. The Jesús de la Caida de San Bartolomé Becerra procession, which occurs on the fifth Sunday of Lent, is one of the grandest. It leaves San Bartolo at 7 a.m. on Sunday, winds its way through the cobbled streets of Antigua, and returns the following Monday morning after midnight. (route map on page 58) According to longtime San Bartolo resident Gabriel López Corado, also known as Don Gabo, the first procession took place around 1902. “It start-

Because I had already been in Antigua four years earlier on Good Friday, I had a sense of what to expect. On this magnificent morning, however, as I stepped out from behind a huge wooden gate onto the main carretera, I felt as though I were in a time warp some 2,000 years past. ...is an ongoing conversation, which joins the medium of digital photography and the topic of water, an endangered resource. Livingston Paddock often has said that her favorite projects “are those where one can make personal interpretations which are at once metaphorical, ambiguous and universal.” All photographs have been digitally printed on German Hahnemuehle 100 percent rag, acid-free paper at the Taller Experimental de Grafica in Guatemala City. She photographs using the Canon EOS 5D with a 24mm – 105mm lens, as well as the more compact Canon G12.

rtist Ana Livingston Paddock’s overarching theme has always been the subject of loss. As a mixed-media artist for the past 30 years, she has employed a number of styles and materials to address the subject of loss. At her upcoming show at the Galería Panza Verde she addresses water employing the medium of digital photography. Her interest in water as a subject dates to 1990, when she read an article in the New York Times and learned about a project to harvest fresh water by dragging Arctic icebergs by tugboat to Saudi Arabia. This surreal image foretold that someday Livingston Paddock would make water the focus of a project dealing with this major impending environmental loss, a planetary crisis in our time.
Her stunning digital photographs, which she has been creating since 2011, found their subject matter here in Guatemala on the South Coast. In the images she has chosen for this exhibition we encounter salt and sweet water, depicted forcefully, boldly at times, lyrically sometimes, but not without a sense of foreboding and danger, a feeling of impending doom, a calm before the storm, a pleasant dream that may suddenly unleash a nightmare. One senses these feelings hovering above, especially when one stands in front of Livingston Paddock’s large, scrollsized prints. Although her photographs are both aesthetically and beautifully compelling as exquisite digital color photographs, her treatment of water in these images belies a deeper concern. ...continued page 64 21

Husband-wife eye doctors celebrate a decade of success.

ince opening in a cramped office 10 years ago in La Antigua Guatemala, Centro Visual G&G has evolved into a thriving, high-tech ophthalmic practice that has treated 15,000 new patients and provided more than 50,000 consultations. Along the way, the husband-wife team of Dr. José Golcher and Dr. Dalia González de Golcher twice outgrew their space, having moved from their original 200-square-foot office to a clinic twice as large and in October 2012 to a 3,300-square-foot location in the east end of Antigua. Several factors behind their success revolve around communication. “We are always available for our patients. We can be reached by telephone, email, website, text messages,” explains Dr. Dalia, who, like Dr. José, is bilingual (English-Spanish). “Once with the patient we provide personal attention. We like to make a thorough examination, we use technology (videos, apps, etc.) to explain to our patient about his/her 38

illness and treatment. We explain to our patients everything that they need to know,” Dr. José said. The doctors also keep studying their specialty to follow the latest technologies and treatments. They attend medical conferences in the United States, Colombia, Mexico and Central America and belong to ophthalmic societies in Guatemala, Latin America and the U.S. Whether on the Centro Visual website or through casual conversation around town, it’s easy to find endorsements and positive feedback from grateful patients. “I think the world of the Golchers—they saved my vision, no doubt about it,” said longtime Antigua resident Michael Hopkins. Having already lost one eye due to unsuccessful cataract surgery elsewhere, Hopkins, an expat from New Mexico, underwent lengthy treatment for retinal detachment in his only eye, multiple surgeries with complications in his optic nerve and macula and recently developed glaucoma. “It was more than their ophthalmic skills and technology. Their genuine concern and commitment to my overall well-being played a huge part in getting me through this ordeal,” he said. Diagnostic equipment in the clinic’s cutting-edge inventory provides the most precise measurement of the eye dimensions prior to cataract surgery and intra-ocular lens implantations. The clinic’s ocular fundus camera and an ocular ultrasound create precise, photographic images and displays of the eye’s interior. The clinic uses two laser technologies to treat glaucoma, post-cataract and diabetic patients. With the opening of the spacious, new clinic in 2012, Centro Visual introduced aesthetic medicine to its practice. The goal is to stop, soften and improve the effects of aging on the skin; the most common procedures are Botox and filler injections. Dr. Dalia, from Colombia, oversees aesthetic medicine and retina, vitreous and macula surgery, while Dr. José, 40
from El Salvador, specializes in cornea and cataract surgery. Each has an M.D., hers from the University of Cartagena, Colombia; his from UPAEP University, Puebla, México. “We decided to study different ophthalmic subspecialties to complement each other,” Dr. Dalia said. The doctors have been working together since first meeting at the Eye and Ear Hospital in Guatemala City in 1997. Question: We have two cats, both spayed females. We are thinking of adopting another cat. What is the best way to introduce them? The addition of a new cat may cause feline stress and litter box problems. Make introductions slowly, confining the new cat to its own room for a couple of weeks. Sniffing and swatting under the door will acquaint the cats. When they finally meet you should expect tension or conflict for a couple of weeks before they settle down. To speed up the process, try wiping each cat’s fur with a separate towel daily. Then place each cat’s food dish on top of the other cat’s towel. They will associate each other’s scent with the positive experience of being fed and grow tolerant of each other more quickly. Make sure each cat has easy access to its own safe, elevated hide away, and each of them equal love and attention. Of course, remember if you have multiple cats, have one or more litter box than you have cats in your household.

The Perfect Food for Lent
I
cannot think of a better food for the Lenten season than ceviche. It is as freshly delicious and easy to make as it is nutritious. It also is versatile. Ceviche can be perfect as a starter paired with a cold Guatemalan beer or it can become the main meal paired with a fine sparkling or still wine. Cevicherías (ceviche restaurants) are a Guatemalan institution. There are many of them in Guatemala City and in the coastal areas. All are usually packed on weekends for a very good reason. Guatemalans claim that ceviche is the perfect cure for a hangover. Ceviche is popular in Guatemala and in other Central and South American countries, as well as in Mexico, the Caribbean and even the United States. Ingredients and presentation vary from country to country. In Guatemala eating ceviche is a cultural experience. At many restaurants, waiters bring all the prepped fresh ingredients to the tables of eager customers, who fix their own 54
ceviches to taste. Common ingredients and condiments are tomatoes, onion, mint, cilantro, Worcestershire sauce, many limes and fresh spicy sauces. Traditional accompaniments are tamalitos (mini-tamales) or soda crackers and sometimes even nacho chips, quite possibly a custom that traveled from neighboring Mexico. Ceviche is simply very easy to make. Its key ingredients are usually raw seafood, with a few exceptions. Because the seafood is eaten raw, freshness is very important. Just-caught, or sushi-grade seafood is ideal for ceviches. Lime juice and salt are typical seasonings, and together they help kill bacteria. The ascorbic acid in lime juice changes the color and texture of the seafood, making it look cooked. The lime juice also has a pickling effect. It heightens the flavor of the ceviche, which would otherwise be bland. Depending on where you are in Guatemala, you may encounter variations of the same ceviche that

reflect the taste of a family or a restaurant owner. Often friends gather at cevicherías not only to eat ceviche, but also to listen to live music. Musicians roam among the tables offering to play requested music at a price. Sometimes these gatherings turn into parties, and people dance, drink and eat for hours. Ceviche is also a street food sold from the backs of pickup trucks, shacks, stands, carts and small momand-pop neighborhood stores. In La Antigua Guatemala and Guatemala City, passers-by stop to eat a quick ceviche, or vendors pack the ceviche to go in small bolsitas (bags) or disposable cups. (Eat at your own risk.) Among favorite Guatemalan ceviches are conchas (black pacific clams), octopus, abalone, caracol (conch), shrimp, fish and mixto (a combination of many types of seafood).

Spicy Shrimp and Scallops in Lime-Orange Sauce
When you make shrimp ceviche, it is important to undercook the shrimp, because when it is marinated in the lime juice, it will become firmer. Seafood in ceviche should be tender, not rubbery, so it’s best to cook your own instead of buying precooked seafood. Accompany this dish with avocado slices, soda crackers, lime wedges and hot sauce. Serves 1 person garnished with onion, lime and cilantro leaves 6 medium shrimp, deveined, tails removed Salted water 1/3 cup fresh baby scallops 1 tablespoon roughly chopped onion 5 roughly chopped cilantro stems 1 bird’s eye (Thai) chile, stem removed 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed orange juice 1 teaspoon ketchup (optional) 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper
Blanch the shrimp in salted hot water until opaque, about 2 minutes. Remove the shrimp from the water and chill immediately in the refrigerator to keep them from cooking further. Repeat the procedure with the scallops, but blanch them for 1 minute.

With a mortar and pestle, gradually pound the onion, cilantro and chile to a fine paste. Add the lime juice and orange juice, ketchup and seasonings and stir with the pestle to form a saucy mixture. (Or purée the ingredients in a blender or food processor.)
Adorno (Garnish) 1 tablespoon thinly sliced red onion 1 lime slice Cilantro leaves
In a medium non-reactive bowl, combine the seafood, sauce, tomatoes and cilantro leaves. Using a soft spatula, mix gently with folding strokes. Taste and adjust seasonings, if needed.

Her Pacific Ocean images can be at times dreamy, lulling us into a false sense of well-being, which we regrettably sense may be long gone. Others depict the Pacific waters, waves, sea foam and whitecaps as a murky, muscular, angry and, at times, dangerous substance. These images are universal metaphors for life and death, beauty on the surface, hidden dangers below. There is also a deep, meditative tranquility to the work at times, which invites the viewer to linger and reflect. Ana Livingston Paddock was raised in the Highlands of Guatemala, educated in art in the U.S. and Sweden. She has exhibited her past work in the U.S. and in Europe. After an absence of several years from Guatemala, Livingston Paddock has returned to La Antigua, where she now lives and pursues her various art projects. “Watermarks — Sellos de Agua” will open on March 11 at 5 p.m. at Galeria Panza Verde, 5a avenida sur #19, La Antigua Guatemala. The artist will attend the opening.

kids make ornate carpets, or when a procession turns a corner or, perhaps visiting the sagrarios. Dating to 1559 in Rome, sagrarios have the Holy Sacrament on display with lovely decorations. The faithful visit sagrarios in seven churches between 6 p.m. and midnight on Maundy Thursday. This pilgrimage commemorates Jesus’ journey from the Last Supper to crucifixion. These are held at all of the churches, and many Guatemalan families visit more than one that evening. One of my favorites has always been the sagrario inside the ruins of the Cathedral of San José. It is the only time the ruins are open at night…filled with hundreds of candles, it is magical. Local neighbors and friends create the beautiful floral arrangements (thank you, María) and it has offered a nice Semana Santa moment for many of us. See you there!

Street vendors had already started selling delectable breakfast treats, including enchiladas, warm tortillas, beans, rice, grilled meats and sweets. And there was an endless supply of toys and colorful balloons for the children. Cucuruchos—men who carry the floats and images during Lent—walked along both sides of the roadway, keeping a path clear for the float and its bearers while ensuring the alfombras remained intact. The alfombras or carpets are prepared throughout the processional routes using pine needles, fresh flowers, brilliantly colored sawdust and sand. I had to walk a mile to return to my complex the night before because the streets had already been closed off while locals created their masterpiece alfombras. I chatted with some of the creators and asked one

of them how long she had been working on her alfombra. “Four hours,” she replied, and she still had a ways to go. It was 1 a.m. but there was enough time. The art of the alfombra is truly ephemeral, an act of pure faith because in a matter of hours, her magnificent work would vanish beneath worshippers’ feet as a huge, hand-carried float bearing the Fallen Christ of San Bartolomé Bercerra crossed over it. Don Gabo, who served as a member of the San Bartolo Hermandad for over 30 years, explained that the image of the Fallen Christ is attributed to sculptor Pedro de Mendoza. Unlike many of the Nazarene

images in which Jesus is portrayed in an upright position, the Fallen Christ or Jesús Nazareno de la Caída symbolizes the episodes in which Jesus fell under the weight of the cross on the way to Calvary for his crucifixion. “After the devastating earthquake of 1976 that destroyed Antigua, many of the sculptures and images were taken away to Guatemala City,” Don Gabo recounted. “Others, including Jesús de la Caída, wound up in the nearby San Jerónimo ruins of Antigua.” With the help of some prominent community members, the sculpture was ultimately rescued from San Jeronimo and returned to San Bartolo. “Jesús Nazareno de la Caída is like a member of the San Bartolo family and is referred to as a living person,” Don Gabo stated. “He even has two crowns, one of which is only worn on the day of the procession.”

eaf children and youth are often left out of community and recreational activities due to communication barriers. In November 2014, an organization in the U.S. and a school in Jocotenango collaborated to offer a completely accessible camp experience for these youth. The program was sponsored by International Deaf Partnerships (IDP), a non-profit from Maryland that provided funds and trained professionals, most of whom were deaf themselves. IDP worked with Las Voces Del Silencio (LAVOSI), a school established in 2009 for deaf children and youth in Jocotenango. The two-week camp offered educational and recreational activities, emphasizing a team-building

program called Personal Discovery. The program was designed as a “train the trainer� model. In the first week, eight deaf Guatemalan youths learned to become camp staff. They practiced how to teach and coach swimming, softball and soccer, and learned various crafts, Personal Discovery activities and camp management. The second week was the actual camp with 23 deaf youths attending the LAVOSI school. The campers slept in the classrooms at the school, ate meals cooked by parent volunteers, participated in a full schedule of sports, Personal Discovery, swimming lessons, arts and crafts
and education classes to polish their math, literacy, sign language and geography skills. In addition, the group went on field trip to nearby Finca Filadelfia Coffee Farm and to Monterrico Beach for the day. International Deaf Partnerships is planning to offer the camp again this November with more deaf youth. IDP is seeking sponsors for the camp and monetary and in-kind donations. Digital cameras and laptops are welcome donations so the students can learn photography and computer skills. Sleeping bags and camping equipment are also needed for an overnight camping trip.

FATCA, a Practical Guide The world is getting smaller, and privacy is increasingly hard to maintain. For U.S. expats, FATCA is a true “thorn in the side,” one that is probably better to deal with earlier than later.

ver 100 countries around the world are now “FATCAcompliant.” This means that banks located in those countries will send the IRS specific information regarding accounts held by U.S. persons. In this article, we’ll discuss how FATCA—the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act—is affecting the average U.S. expat or dual citizen (including business owners) and the options for dealing with the requirements.
may work (will not be the case in most developed countries) • Fill it out – you are being compliant with U.S. tax laws. It will be important that you are also compliant with your tax return and FBAR filing requirements. Dual citizens have an additional option. If the bank inquires about their U.S. citizenship, they can deny having dual citizenship status. Of course, that would not be compliant with U.S. tax laws, and carries risks.
My bank is asking me to complete a W-9 form. What should I do? In the United States, the W-9 is a basic form that people fill out when they start a new job or open a new bank account. The critical information captured on the W-9 is the Social Security number. When foreign banks send the IRS your account balance and earned interest information, it will be attached to your name and Social Security number. IRS computers will be able to cross-reference the information sent by your bank against your U.S. income tax return and Foreign Bank Account Report (FBAR) filing. Discrepancies will be red-flagged, although any action by the IRS will likely take several years. Keep in mind that penalties and interest accrue in the meantime. When the bank asks you to complete a W-9, you have 3 options: • Refuse – your bank will likely close your account for noncompliance • Delay – take the form home with you, and hope the bank doesn’t ask again. Depending on the country and bank, this
I have a business account at the bank. Should I be worried? It’s unclear whether foreign banks will report business account information (foreign corporations owned by U.S. expats) to the IRS. The consequences would be severe. That is because there many Americans do not report their foreign businesses although it is required. Most report only the wage they pay themselves. Each FATCA-compliant country and foreign banks are taking their own approach in dealing with U.S. expat customers. Recently, a client of Hola Expat in the Cayman Islands was told by her bank to provide proof of her Form 5471 (report on foreign corporation) and FBAR filings. Another client (in Mexico) was asked by his bank to complete a W-8 Ben-E. This form is used by U.S. companies that do business with foreign entities, so that they can withhold taxes correctly. In most cases, the bank is incorrect in asking U.S. expats to complete a W-8 Ben-E form. However, if the bank insists, make sure you check off “Active NFFE” on page 1 of the form.

here’s no need for tickets to enjoy a graceful ballet company in a grand performance, no need to go to the Bolshoi or Lincoln Center, for the act is here most evenings. Just find the right spot on a rooftop around sunset when flocks of white birds swirl and soar in formation as they return home to their crowded nesting tree. Bird experts disagree as to their proper name, calling them egrets, herons, cattle birds, depending on the guidebook. Whatever, they’re beautiful as they swoop closely together in aerobatic maneuvers, seemingly having a bit of fun after a day’s work in the fields. 92
As do many Guatemalan farmers, these flocks of birds head off early mornings to the corn fields, milpas, spending the day walking the soft loam, dashing and stabbing a grub or other delicacy when they spot something wiggling that’s good to eat. Often two or three white birds will follow a cow, waiting for the animal’s hoof to press a little hole that might provide a nibble. Then as the sun begins to set, it’s time to come home from the fields, and here’s where you can enjoy a wonderful show. These cattle egrets weren’t found in Mexico or Central America until about 150 years ago. Now they’re everywhere, from the sugar cane plantations near the coast to above tree level in the high Cuchumatanes Mountains. They’re prolific birds, living as extended families atop a big tree, often to the annoyance of the human homeowners underneath their evening noise. The egret voice is a gruff cluck or grunt, not bad when there is just one or two, but a bit more disturbing when 100 are chattering away at the same time like a crowded dim sum lunch spot in Hong Kong. There’s such a nesting tree a few blocks south of our home, and shortly before sundown a cloud of white birds arrives from northern fields. There’s a leader out front, but just how the word spreads the orders to turn west, head east, drop down, then up again, is a mystery to us humans. They really enjoy playing around, above the town’s rooftops until they get to their very own tree, and at cocktail time on terrazas all over town we humans gather to await a few minutes’ entertainment. Ask around for the right spot, pour some refreshment, and wait for the white cotton puff to dance above youz.
