The United Methodist Men are stirring something up. That’s right; it’s time for the batter, bacon and fixins’! On Tuesday, March 8th from 6pm-8pm, the men’s group is hosting its 3rd annual Pancake Supper. This tradition is connected to the celebration and festivities of Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. Our February meeting was held on Feb 14, 2011. Many thanks to all of you who attended. Special thanks to Micki Triggs for the devotional she gave, Dorene Taylor for an excellent program and last, but not least, the delicious refreshments served by Minnette Puckett. Thank you ladies for all that you do. Pattie Crow, our tea chairperson and her tea cabinet are in full swing with plans for our 11th Annual Ladies Tea to be held Sat., March 5, 2011 from 2 -4 pm at Oak Haven UMC. Tickets are $10.00 each; Minnette Puckett is in charge of ticket sales. This year’s theme is Mardi Gras. There will be entertainment, food and a style show. Proceeds from this year’s Tea will go to support our local missions. If you have any questions or need tickets you can contact Pattie, Minnette or myself. Please keep in mind our ongoing projects: 1) “Christmas in July” for residents of Ashford Hall, the items needed are small toiletry items, magazines, games and puzzle books. The box for these is on the table next to the nursery. 2) Also, Campbell’s Soup Labels for Dallas Bethlehem Center to help purchase supplies for their school. Our next meeting is March 14, 2011 at 7:00 pm at the church. I hope to see you all there.

The United Methodist Men’s (UMM) group met for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Thurs, Feb. 17, 2011 for a time of fellowship. We shared an opening prayer and followed with a delicious dinner provided by various members of the group. The UMM purpose statement was recited and last month’s minutes were reviewed. Rev. Fletcher led a meaningful devotional based on a reading from 1 Kings 19. The devotional recalled Elijah’s experience with God in the “sheer silence.” Like Elijah, we can get overwhelmed with many of life’s obstacles and sometimes need to step back in silence to meditate our minds, spirit, and soul so that we can cherish the silence God gives us. Rev. Fletcher also mentioned a book called “Methodism in Recovery,” which describes how Christians can cherish the “silence” God blesses us daily. The financial report is current with a balance of 7,797.34, and the quarterly amount has been paid this past month. Our group agreed to send a financial gift to The Great Days of Service, scheduled for March 18-19 and 25-26. This is a wonderful opportunity to help Irving residents. Information is still available if you are interested. Our next UMM meeting will be March 17, 2011 at 7pm on Thursday night and any member/visitor are welcome to attend. We hope to see you then! NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - A short film funded by a United Methodist Board of Discipleship grant won a regional Emmy. The Rev. Steve HorswillJohnston, the producer-director, received the award for "Digital Diary: Christine" on Jan. 29. The Nashville/Midsouth Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences gave the honor. Horswill-Johnston, the board's executive director of communications and brand strategy, described the 12-minute story of a woman trying desperately to save her marriage as a "bringbrain" film. It invites "people to think, to explore and to discuss ... to unwrap Jesus' teachings and see their application in our own lives in a whole new way," he said. people per square mile, it is considered rural. There are about 20,000 United Methodist rural congregations in the U.S.- more than 60 percent of the denomination in the U.S. Despite these significant numbers, a 2010 survey revealed that rural church members often feel unheard and misunderstood.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (UMNS) –– Representatives from the United Methodist Tennessee, Memphis and Holston annual (regional) conferences will recruit and train people to take Disciple Bible Study to 14 Tennessee state prisons housing 20,000 inmates. The effort to introduce the 34week study into Tennessee prisons is coordinated by Rev. Mark Hicks, executive director of DISCIPLE Bible Outreach Ministries of North Carolina, and Gil Hanke, top staff executive of the Nashville-based Commission on United Methodist Men.
FORT WORTH, Texas (UMNS) — The Rev. Ken Diehm, a United Methodist pastor famed for his Super Bowl-themed sermons, died of internal bleeding and acute leukemia on Feb. 19 at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth. He was 52. Diehm, the senior pastor at First United Methodist Church in Grapevine, gained denomination-wide attention for his annual sermons on the messages “we wish were in the previous Sunday’s Super Bowl.” He died before he could deliver this year’s sermon.
Global Church Membership Tops 12 Million NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — While The United Methodist Church’s U.S. membership has continued to shrink, its growth elsewhere in the world has put it over the 12 million-member mark for the first time, newly released statistics show. The church's membership in Africa, Europe and Asia grew from 3.5 million to 4.4 million in the five years ending in 2009, according to the denomination's General Council on Finance and Administration.

In Western Christianity, Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sunday are not included in the count). Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. During some Ash Wednesday services, the minister will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers. The Bible does not mention Ash Wednesday or the custom of Lent, however, the practice of repentance and mourning in ashes is found in 2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1; Job 2:8; Daniel 9:3; and Matthew 11:21. Youth Group Our youth group has been meeting for several months. We are very excited to have the opportunity to be in ministry with our young people, and trust you are as well. The group meets every 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 4:30-5:45. It’s a time of fellowship, singing, praying and much more. Please know you are an important part of our youth ministry. So, here are four easy ways you can participate with us: 1) Pray: Pray that our activities will be a way to teach and share the gospel. Pray for the families and concerns of our young people. 2) Join Us: We love guests. Sit in on a meeting. Read scripture or pray with us. It is important for the students to know their church cares for them. 3) Provide Food: We share a small meal together at each meeting. Consider preparing a meal or providing snacks for the group to have. 4) Write a letter of encouragement: Let the students know you are praying for them. Write a personal note or card to the group or to a particular student. Several of our church members have already helped us in different ways. For that we say, “Thanks!” We appreciate your care for our young people and look forward to working more together.
