May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Featured, Practical beauty Leave a Comment Serums are becoming increasingly popular in skin care ranges. From anti-aging serums to extra hydrating formulations, you can find a serum for every skin concern. But are they worth the extra money. Are they any better than a well formulated moisturiser? The simple answer is yes! They are most definitely worth spending extra money on as these little products are jam packed full of amazing ingredients at concentrated levels that moisturisers just can’t deliver. Bellow are our favourite serums that will surely bring a glow to your skin.

1, Lancome Genefique Youth Activator Meet Lancome’s latest age-defying elixir Beauty nerds brace yourself. Following 10 years of in-depth research, Lancome scientists studied the way

our genes work (known as genomics) and the proteins they produce (that’s proteomics), to keep skin at its optimum level. They realised that genes take longer to repair themselves as we grow older and the proteins contained within the cells function at a slower rate too. The breakthrough? All aging skin needs is a little pick-me-up to get the genes back into action. Lancome’s Genifique Youth Activating Serum forces the genes to think that they are young again. Used twice daily beneath your moisturiser or serum, a few drops of this high-tech elixir stimulates the protein production within our cells for a more luminous, toned, youthful-looking complexion. Now, you get to see all the celebrities in Hollywood up close, so can you tell us who has the best and worst skins? Nelson: Brad Pitt’s always been challenged with skin woes. In fact, when he was just starting out in the biz, he tried out for a soap opera but the producers just couldn’t get past his complexion and didn’t want to hire “the guy with the bad skin.” He certainly got the last laugh, didn’t he!? The first time I met Emily Blunt, we both immediately started talking about each other’s skin. She is gorgeous, top to bottom…and her complexion is flawless. Love her.

Livia: Have you ever been surprised by the appearance of a celebrity and why? Nelson: All the time. No one ever looks or acts the way you imagine them from onscreen. Steve Carrel is a much more subtle and classically handsome guy than the characters he plays. AndAngelina Jolie just took my breath away. She is even MORE stunning in person, if that’s possible! Interestingly, she looks older than she is (32), but her inner and outer radiance will keep her as one of the world’s most beautiful people no matter how old she gets. The late, great Jessica Tandy was a good example of a woman who got more and more beautiful with age. As a young woman, she was quite plain but as an old lady she was so lovely! It’s as if her years of experience made her prettier with time. Kate Hepburn was the same way. Livia: Who would you say looks better in person then on the screen and why? Nelson: People don’t mean to be rude when they meet me and remark, “Oh, you’re so much shorter in person.” And I’ve gotten used to it. I understand that most of the time, viewers only see me from the waist, up. It’s the same with everyone in TV and film. You don’t get an accurate sense of their height or weight on camera (Tom Cruise and Paul Newman are shorties; Catherine Zeta Jones looks voluptuous on film, but there’s not an ounce of fat on her!) and certainly in person you see all the lines, freckles, thinning hair, and other “flaws” that you wouldn’t notice otherwise. And don’t get me started on who has bad breath!

The stars who look BETTER in person are the ones who surprise you with PERSONALITY. Antonio Banderas always seems to be in a great, playful, happy mood. So that makes him sexier. The divine Meryl Streep is so down to earth and good humoured, that she glows. Dame Julie Andrews is self effacing and interested in talking about YOU (as opposed to HERSELF) and it makes her beauteous. Cameron Diazconstantly surprises me with how naturally clever she is, and I find it makes her better looking than the “dizzy blonde” character she usually plays.

Livia: What are the latest Hollywood Beauty Fads? Nelson: It sems like everything’s about “firming.” Firming cremes for the abdominal area, face, legs, etc. It turns me off because I’m not into temporary solutions. If you want firmer abs, go do your situps! And everyone’s into the fake tans, more than ever. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being pale. Look at how lovelyNicole Kidman and Anne Hathaway are and they’re so fair! Livia: In the glossy magazines we often see cosmetic surgery procedures gone wrong on celebrities. Who have you seen with less than desirable results? Nelson: Don’t get me into trouble! I will say that Mickey Rourke, Melanie Griffith and Faye Dunaway certainly seem to have decided not to age gracefully and consequently have managed to botch their good looks. Livia: Have any of the celebrities shared their makeup Secrets with you? Nelson: Still lovely Tippi Hedren should have counselled her daughter Melanie. She always tells me “Sleep!” and to be sure to always wash your face before bed. Those are basic tips you can’t beat. Livia: We all know that smoking and drinking is detrimental for your skin. How do the party girls of Hollywood (eg: Lindsay, Paris ect.) look after a big night out and do you know of any tricks they use to spruce up for the cameras? Nelson: Those poor girls will be hags in 20 years at the rate they’re going. Right now they’ve got youth on their side so they can bounce back quickly, but that won’t last long. A lot of them are hooked on B-12 vitamin injections for quick fixes and even a lot of mainstream medical offices offer them now. Livia: Which celebrity has caught your eye recently and why? Nelson: I think Jessica Biehl does a great job of looking consistently good and natural. Of course, as a guy I’m impressed when I see men who are effortlessly well groomed, healthy and looking good. the young actorJoseph Cross impresses me and I’ve always been an admirer of English actor Terence Stamp. He’s in his late 60s and more handsome than ever. Livia: You are yourself a celebrity, being on our TV screens twice every morning on Channel 7, Sunrise. You are also a serious Menscaper. What is your latest Grooming purchase/ love and why?

Nelson: I use an Oxygen-enhanced moisturizer from my esthetician pal Maria DeSio and a tinted Chanel moisturizer when I’m on-camera. An Australian skin care company, Eyre BioBotanics, sent me samples of their men’s products and I loved ALL of them. Shaving cream, cleanser and scrub. Jo Malone has a fantastic new lip balm, but unfortunately it’s a little too shiny for guys…we don’t want to look like we’re wearing lip gloss! I’m still trying to figure out what the heck “Toner” is supposed to do for us! Livia: How do your 7 SUNRISE mates feel about skin care. Are they as into it as you are? Nelson: Ha ha, In the 4 years I’ve been chatting with him, Kochie has definitely developed his education in that area. But somehow I doubt he goes home and exfoliates in the shower! Mel and Nat not only have excellent skin and skin care habits, but God given bone structure. A real plus for them being on camera under the hot lights every day is Lizzie the show makeup artist. Whenever she & I get together, I meet her in Beverly Hills and we go on a “beauty bender” through the department stores. She not only has the artist skills to paint a face, but the technical knowledge about the skin she’s working with… Tags:

Sparkle Like a Star! Glowing Winter Skin May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Editor's picks Leave a Comment

Now that summer is over in Australia, the cold winds are blowing in and the temperature has dropped, if you are like me, you feel like hibernating. And I don’t just mean staying in bed. I mean

hibernating in the makeup department too. In winter I not only slow down, but I’m less inclined to stand in the cold bathroom meticulously applying my makeup. Therefore it generally tends to be more slapped on, less glamorous. But this year is different. I have, ahead of winter, made a resolution that I will not let the winter inner-sloth get the better of me. Instead I have decided to seek out the products that will allow me to still glow, shimmer and sparkle but with minimum time and fuss. To my great relief the products were not that hard to find. Obviously other people have had the same thoughts too. So let me share with you the products that will keep me glowing all through winter, long after the summer tan has faded.

Once I have applied my foundation I follow it with Guerlain - Divinora Liquid Radiance Complexion Highlighter. This is a fantastic product that I just dab over the top of my foundation on my forehead and cheekbones for a light touch of radiance. This can also be used alone for when I don’t want to look very made up but still require a smooth radiant complexion.

The other brilliant option is the Mineralogie - Radiance Bronzer. This is a mineral makeup shimmer powder that gives the skin the most amazing shimmer. It comes in a dispenser which makes it very easy to use, so you just brush it straight on your skin. It is important to wait a few minutes after application to get the full effect of the shimmer as it warms to the skin. You will fall in love with this powder. My next favourite product for warming up a winter complexion is blush. All makeup artists know that with blush you can instantly pick up an otherwise dull, sallow complexion. A fantastic product for this is Benefit - 10. This is a bronzing and highlighting face powder duo that literally brightens your face in one sweep. It is a combination of a light shimmering pink and a glowing bronze powder that you combine on the brush to highlight and bronze in one sweep. Napoleon has just recently released his Blush Patrol. This works on a similar premise combining a highlighter with a bronzer to give you very natural and fresh glow. This also has beautiful gold swirls in the powder so it feels very luxuriant when applying. Or you can use Natio - Bronze Shimmer Palette. This combination of four colours can be used all mixed together as a blush or used individually to highlight certain areas of the face. The beautiful light cream is great for the eyes as a base and the golden brown is great as a contour colour. The golden bronze colour is especially beautiful on the decolletage.

The last product in my arsenal is a fantastic all in one product. Napoleon - Light Patrol is the product to use for all your shimmer highlight needs. You have a choice of five cream based colours that can be used alone or mixed together to highlight eyes, lips and cheeks. The lighter colours give the skin subtle shimmer so they are wonderful to highlight and the two darker colours are just amazing on your eyes and lips. It is a brilliant product to be able to throw in your bag and use to touch up wherever you are. With these products I can easily conceal my lack of enthusiasm at applying my makeup on cold winter mornings. Also as I found out, it will also make you feel so much better if your face is positively glowing because you can’t possibly be grouchy with a gorgeous face on. It’s just not congruent. So take heart, take my advice and shimmer, glow and sparkle your way a brighter winter. Tags:

How to Create the PERFECT Smoky Eye

May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Beautyland Leave a Comment

How you look on the outside can also affect how you feel inside. So, to create captivating eyes on the outside, read on. There are methods and techniques to suit women will all shapes of eyes and ehtnicities, but if we have missed anything, please let us know so we can include it. Below are several eye make up techniques that you can experiment with. Essentials * Eye Shadow - at least 2 shades, one light, and one deeper. * Liner - Either Di Line Gel Liner or Powderliner Pencil * Mascara - Waterproof Mascara or Lush Lash in a shade darker than your lashes. * Shadow, Crease, Liner Brushes and a Brow and Lash Comb. Preparation 1. Prepare the eye area, clean of all traces of make up 2. Apply an eye cream or gel to moisturise and soothe this delicate area. 3. Apply either Mineral Illuminator or Heavy Duty Concealer to the inner eye area including the bridge of the nose and the eye lid (sparingly), using the Primer Brush. 4. Dust the area lightly with Triple Milled Loose Powder, with the Blush/Powder Brush.

Step 1 - Define the Eye 1. Line the eye, using either the Di Line Gel Liner (with the Liner brush) or use the Powderliner Pencil. Apply to the upper and lower lash line (d) as desired. Step 2 - Enchance the Contours and Highlights 1. Base Shade: With the Shadow Brush, pat a mid toned Eye Shadow onto the mobile eyelid (a) from the lashline to the crease. Blend edges. 2. Highlight: Using the Crease Brush, apply a highlighting Eye Shadow to the brow bone (e) and inner eye corner (b). 3. Contour Shade: With the Crease Brush, apply a deeper Eye Shadow to the outer 1/3 of the eye lid in the crease (c), blending as you go and building the colour gradually. Apply shadow over the eyeliner. This helps to set it and holds the liner in place for longer. 4. Clean the Shadow and Crease Brush with alcohol sprayed onto a tissue.

Step 3 - Lashes 1. Mascara: Using a disposable mascara wand to apply if mascara is used by more than one person. 2. Sweep Mascara (either Lush Lash for sensitive eyes/fine lashes/contact lenses or the deluxe Waterproof Mascara for longwearing, ultra black lashes). Apply to bottom lashes first, then the top, taking care to coat each lash. 3. Separate any blobs with the Lash Comb. 4. Apply 2 coats to the top lashes, combing lashes in between each coat. Notes on mascara * Apply mascara to the bottom lashes first, to prevent those little spots on the brow bone. Applying 2 coats to the top lashes. * If you are very very fair, why not try a slightly lighter shade than black or get your lashes tinted, as it will look more natural. * If your lash hairs are very fine, use a thinner mascara, with a denser brush. The Lush Lash mascara is perfect for fine lashes on sensitive eyes. Make Up Techniques for Various Eye Shapes Look at your eyes objectively in the mirror or a photo. What do you want to achieve? Bigger eyes, bedroom eyes, attention grabbing eyes or innocent eyes? Look at the shape of your eyes. The illustrations show various eye shapes and some suggestions for applying shadow. The main goal with eye shadow is to define and enhance, most make-up artists try to make eyes appear, larger and almond shaped -up and out.

Dark shadow receeds, light shadows enlarge and bring forward. If you have large eyes wear deep shades,

if you have small eyes, stick to lighter shades. If your eyes protrude and you want to minimise this, use darker shadow around them, and if your eyes are deep set, opt for lighter shades to prevent closing them in. EXOTIC EYE SHAPES Women from different races have varied eye shapes and sizes. From the gorgeous almond asian, deepsultry middle eastern shape, the sensuous african and indian and the rounded blue eyed westerner. Many women try to change the shape of their eyes, rather than enhancing the beauty of their own eye shape. Instead of coveting another women’s eye shape and trying to fit into a standard mould, try to bring out the unique qualities of your own eyes. Revel in the difference, stand out and be proud! The key to great eye make-up is a few quality brushes, highly pigmented shadow (either cream or powder) and good blending. BLEND, BLEND, BLEND and if in doubt, BLEND! SMOKY EYES

Soft and velvety, the secret to a perfect smoky eye is blend, blend, blend. The goal is to control the smudge. Colours to use include grey, brown, dusty mauve, deep green, navy, charcoal. For more information on creating this very popular and sexy eye make up.

(Sabrina Houssami - Miss Asia Pacific demonstrates the universality and appeal of the smoky eye technique, wearing Secret, Sultry and Oomph shades of Di Kennedy Eye Shadow, Water Proof Mascara with Cream Dream Lacquer on lips. Her cheeks are lightly flushed with Petal Matte Powder Blush). BASIC EYE SHADOW TIPS AND TECHNIQUES Below are two popular eye techniques:

Classic Eye Liner: Think of Maria Callas, Audrey Hebpurn or Marilyn Munroe. Where would they be without their trademark eye liner? This is a simple classic to master, and it will serve you as well as a great suit or a little black dress. Hold the Angled Liner Brush like a pencil and practice, practice, practice. All this is a single, smooth sweep of crisp colour that starts thin and gets wider towards the outside of the eye and ends in a little flick. It can be any thickness from fine to bold. For all out movie star glamour try adding false lashes. NOTE: It’s easier to create a smooth line if your skin is smooth. For eyes with looser skin and fine lines, pull the skin taut from the arch of the brow upwards and outwards. If you find gel or liquid a bit daunting, try using the Powderliner Pencil, which is a soft, highly pigmented pencil that has a smudging tool at the other end for softening the line, which tends to be a more universally flattering technique. With all pencil liners, it is a good idea to “set” the line with a powder shadow in a similar shade. The Classic Contoured

This eye works for most people. You simply focus on the crease of the eye, in the out 1/2 to 1/3 of the eye and use a deeper colour to acceptuate where the showdows would be if the contour was more pronounces. It can serve to add depth, but not recommended for eye shades that are already deep set. For deepset eyes keep colours light and avoid contouring too much, focus on hightlighting. Remember, light comes forward, dark receeds. Below are some suggested combinations of the Eye Shadows that work for the classic contoured eye. Tags:

Magic Hands - The Best of the Best Hand Creams May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Beautyland Leave a Comment

What is the one place on your body that doesn’t lie about your age? It is your hands. It is also the area that has the thinnest skin on your body and one of the most abused. Yes abused. Think about it. How many times a day do you wash your hands? How many times do you pamper it? While we spend hundreds of dollars on luxurious skin care products and makeup and are by now quite conscious about wearing sunscreen every day, we tend to neglect our hands. In fact, because the skin on the back of our hands is so much thinner than on our face the loss of fat that happens when we age is obvious straight away, leaving behind wrinkly, saggy skin. Therefore I took it on myself to search high and low and find the best hand creams out there to provide the pampering our hands need and deserve. This was a wonderful assignment for me as I already own dozens of hand creams, one for each of my handbags and one or two for the car and several for every room in the house. Therefore I am only too happy to road test a few more. As there are hundreds of hand creams on the market appealing to different needs I decided to break them into groups. Following are my favourites. The Best Fragranced Hand Creams.

Glamourflage - Raunchy Rosie Hand Cream $25.95 One of the most beautifully fragranced hand creams I have ever tried. It is a light freesia scent and it is also very moisturising with Aloe Vera, Macadamia and Calendula oils. www.glamourflage.com.au

Beauty & the Bees - Honey and Olive Protective Hand Cream $27.95 This hand made cream is fragranced with rose, geranium and lavender oils smelling absolutely wonderful. It is also an intensely rich treatment cream for before or after a bath or shower. It provides protection against the elements, gives a semi-waterproof barrier, soothes and restores hard working hands. www.beebeauty.com Anti - Aging Hand Creams

NeoStrata - Hand & Nail Cream - PHA 8 This hand cream is specially formulated in an emollient base with 8% PHA (gluconolactone) combining the exfoliating and long lasting moisturizing benefits of a PHA with the antioxidants Vitamin E and Vitamin B Complex in a smooth luxurious cream. It

moisturizes and conditions the hands and cuticles and reduces the visible signs of aging. Ideal for revitalizing dried, sun damaged hands. It is fragrance free and hypoallergenic. www.neostrata.com

Mecca - Hand-Elujah Age Defying Hand Treatment $38.00 If the signs of time have taken toll of your once smooth, spot-free hands, redemption is here with this three in one boosting balm. Filled to the brim with a blend of exfoliating Alpha and Beta Hydroxy acids, repairing Aloe, skin boosting vitamins and Bearberry extract to help even out the skin tone. www.meccacosmetica.com.au

Sally Hansen - Anti-Wrinkle Extra Firming Hand Creme $19.75 For the very dry hands that have fine lines and wrinkles this is the cream. Ceramides play a key role in maintaining moisture levels and help to firm the skin. Marine Collagen and Vitamins are essential to boost natural collagen productions. The result is visibly younger-looking and smoother skin. www.sallyhansen.com Extra Nourishing Hand Creams.

Ahava - Intensive Nourishing Hand Cream $29.95 This is a highly concentrated formula created to rejuvenate even the driest skin. A grease-free blend of Dead Sea mineral enriched mud and assorted natural essences works deep to relieve itchiness, redness and scaling and stimulates your skin into moisturizing action. Perfect winter solution to dry and overworked hands. www.ahava.com.au

Decleor - Nourishing Comforting Hand Cream $40.00 This is a phyto-aromatic cream for the hands that creates an imperceptible protective glove. It nourishes and protects from external aggressors to leave the skin satin-soft. It also helps with fine lines and age spots. Containing Shea Butter, Parsley, Dyers Weed and Vitamins B5 & E, it is not only very moisturising but also great for helping fight age spots. www.decleor.com

Sense - Intensive Hand Therapy $27.00 This beautiful creme counteracts harsh environmental elements as it hydrates dry, cracked skin with powerful moisturising and soothing ingredients. Mulberry leaf, bearberry leaf, and elderberry flower brighten and refine the skin’s appearance. Irish moss and mallow provide intensive moisturising and emollient properties, while echinacea and centella asiatica act as excellent firming agents. Also contains whole grape and green tea extracts for powerful nutrient protection. www.usana.com

Hand Treatment Bush Essentials - Body Scrub $30.00 In my search for the ultimate hand cream I came across this scrub. This scrub is made from mineral rich Sea Salts and contain the most amazing essential oils. Australian Lemon Myrtle for soothing, cooling, anti bacterial, anti fungal. Lime oil combats brittle nails & cellulite, Peppermint for invigorating and cooling. Patchouli soothes & controls dry itchy skin, Bergamot lifts the mood. All this in the base oils of Macadamia, Jojoba and Vitamin E. I have never felt my skin more moisturised than after using this scrub. And for several washes after use I didn’t even need to apply hand cream. I can thoroughly recommend you treat yourself to this little pot of luxury. www.bushessentials.com In my search for the best hand creams I came across some excellent products. This collection is only the tip of the iceberg as there are literally hundreds of hand creams on the market and I’m sure you have your favourites too. Nevertheless the most important thing is to look after this delicate area of your body, don’t neglect it and treat it as it deserves to be treated, as the hardest working skin on your body.

Tame Those Winter Locks May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Beautyland Leave a Comment

by Livia Mercer & Caterina DiBiase With the start of the big chill and the diminishing sun, it’s important to modify hair care to suit the cooler months. So the question is: ‘Does hair need different care in winter than in summer?’ We asked Caterina DiBiase, Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year 2007 & AHFA Australian Hairdresser of the Year 2007 for her tips on caring for your skin during these colder months.

“Winter hair needs tender loving care! Winter hair dries out just like summer hair - but instead of the sun and the sea doing the damage, it’s heaters that do the harm!” Freezing cold temperatures, excessive winds, snow and rain can all wreak havoc on your hair leaving it dry, porous and non-playful.

Hair during these cold winter months behaves differently. So this is the time to really care and moisturise the hair as well as the scalp. Caterina said “Both hair and scalps get very dehydrated, and both need moisturising and care. Both Aveda and Kerastase do brilliant treatments to add moisture, condition and brilliant shine. Aveda Damage Therapy is a fabulous ‘facial for your hair’ and takes hair care to new heights with the most superb in salon basin experience! Kerastase Aqua Oleum is my absolute favourite - it’s quick, fast acting nutrition for all hair types, and brings great shine to tired hair.” “The key tip for doing treatments at home is to do them in the shower. Shampoo, and then gently squeeze water out of your hair. Then put your treatment in and cover with a shower cap. Allow water to fall over the top of the cap so it’s nice and hot and steams up. This helps the ingredients penetrate the hair follicle further. And in these water saving times, it’s important to do your hair first thing in the shower so you can steam your hair whilst you soap up and wash! You can also wrap your hair in a hot towel. But do not sleep with the treatment over night as it can make hair very gluggy the next day. Because you can always have too much of a good thing!”

It is also very important to use gentle hair products that contain natural oils that soothe, protect and resuscitate the hair from winter’s harsh environmental aggressors rather than strip the natural oils from the hair and aggravate the dryness. This may not only trigger frizziness but also expedite split ends. So shop around and take advantage of the fantastic products on the market to help you through these cold months both to have in a salon and also to take home with you and use on a daily basis. With these tips you will never have to have a bad hair day.

Products: 1, American Crew Tea Tree Shampoo ($19.95) Contains natural oils that soothe and protect the hair. 2, American Crew Fiber ($31.95) Beeswax acts as a barrier against moisture loss and gives hair a natural, clean finish. 3, American Crew Groom Spray ($23.95) Formulated with natural humectants to add shine, manageability and reduce flyaway tendencies. www.americancrew.com 4, mop’s Pear shampoo ($22.95), The natural scalp-purifying ingredients contain no harsh additives or detergents to dry out sensitive skin and scalps. 5, mop’s Leave-In Conditioner ($23.95), formulated and enriched with calming ingredients to nourish follicles, render shine and promote healthy hair growth. 6, mop’s C-system Reconstructing Treatment ($35.95) This treatment has a bouquet of nutritional ingredients including pear extract and Papaya to rapidly restore tired hair. www.mopproducts.com 7, Kerastase Aqua -Oleum. Combines the richness of the natural oil from jojoba and avocado with optimum hydration. The ultra fine emulsion allows the active ingredients to penetrate your hair immediately. www.kerastase.com 8, Aveda Damage Therapy($64.95) This intensive plant-based treatment delivers long-lasting moisture as it strengthens and helps repair dry and damaged hair. Features quinoa protien, barley and sandalwood. www.aveda.com 9, Fudge 1 shot+ Leave in Treatment Spray. Delivers and locks in protein and moisture, detangles hair and increases shine and manageability. www.fudge.com Tags:

Face of Australia - Powder Perfect Foundation SPF 15 May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Foundation Reviews Leave a Comment

Face of Australia - Powder Perfect Foundation SPF 15 Description: Silky liquid to powder foundation provides a flawless coverage that blends perfectly to adjust to your natural skin tone and provides the protection from harmful UV rays. ” Promotes younger looking skin with SPF 15 ” Advanced formula with matte colour ” Controls shine ” Will not clog pores. Size: 30ml Price: $12.95 AUS Availability: Priceline Overall Star Rating:

This Liquid to Powder foundation was a little surprise in a bottle. As promised, it glides onto the skin effortlessly and does have a powdery finish. Some of our panellist found the white powdery residue on their fingers a bit off-putting, but other than that the foundation is excellent to wear giving you a very natural coverage. It also allows for a heavier application if needed. Great to see an SPF in the product. Overall, it is a nice inexpensive foundation that delivers what it promises.

Lovely, lightweight texture - velvety smooth and very pleasant to touch. I like my foundations lightweight and I don’t like a rich, full coverage foundation, so this seemed ideal. I have never tried a cream to powder (liquid) foundation before, so I was keen to try it! I found it blends easily, and a little definitely goes a long way. I only needed to use a small amount to get the desired coverage. It immediately felt soft and velvety smooth where applied, and stayed that way all day. My makeup still looked fresh, and felt soft and smooth at the end of the day. The fact that it dries to a powder finish really helps with the durability and longevity of this product. The texture is fantastic. It gives medium coverage, and helped even out my skin tone very well. Plus I like the fact that it has good UVA / UVB protection (spf15). I did not notice any smell with the product! It is an absolute bargain buy!!

Personal Rating:

Applying the product was easy; using either a sponge or fingertips gave the same appearance. The product felt nice to wear and was long lasting. It had a slight fragrance, pleasant and the texture was as described silky. I would purchase this product again as it is easy to apply, looks and feels nice to wear. Personal Rating:

Cute small squeezy packaging. I have never used a liquid to powder product before. It was quite easy to apply with the fingertips. It has a slippery, siliconey texture which made it easy to apply but around the nose area it was a little difficult to smooth out, especially if I had any flakes of dry skin. It wore quite well but I’m less oily at the moment than I am in summer months but I think you can get around that by setting it with powder. There was no discernable smell and the texture was quite slippery. Personal Rating:

The first thing I thought was “Who is Face Of Australia” - I must admit I had never heard of them. The packaging looked nice but also at the same time a bit cheap. The best way I can put it is by saying that if I was a teenager I would have thought it was grown-up. Once I took the lid off I really liked the spout for dispensing the foundation - it was easy to control the amount coming out. I found that a small amount of foundation could cover quite a bit of your face - so you didn’t feel like you were wasting it. The application looked better after a couple minutes. When applying foundation, obviously you get a little residue on your fingers, but I found that this foundation left a heavy white residue which did not rub off easily with your fingers; you had to wash your hands well. I figured this was to do with the liquid turning to powder - unfortunately I am not familiar with similar style foundations so I wasn’t sure if this happens all the time. In saying that the foundation went far I then realised that I wasn’t getting a good coverage (very light). This was great for just everyday wear. It didn’t come off on my clothes and once dry, it had a really nice feel on your face. It appeared to last all day but was a bit hard to tell with just a light coverage. I also did a heavier application and it did surprise me. It was better than I thought it would be. Again, lasted well all day and didn’t rub off. My skin felt really nice and I didn’t have any reaction to the sunscreen in it (which my skin is prone to do). Personal Rating:

Nice neat compact packaging - great size & good closure for gym bag/travelling. The foundation went on smoothly and blended easily without streaking. It set quite quickly to powder finish. Nice light texture, enough to even out skin tone but not cover up. Perfect tinted moisturiser for oily skin. My only complaint would be that it set to a noticeable white powder on my fingertips! The colour lasted all day & didn’t sink into my pores. It didn’t look like I was wearing any make up. By mid-afternoon things got a bit shiny, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed with powder! There was almost no smell which was great.

I would absolutely purchase it again - it’s a great, easy to apply light coverage foundation that does a reasonable job of controlling oil. The compact packaging & good closure make it excellent for travel too . Personal Rating: Tags:

Natio - Sunrise Plumping Liquid Lipstick May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Lip Product Reviews Leave a Comment

Natio - Sunrise Plumping Liquid Lipstick Description: Moisturising high shine, Creamy gloss to help plump lips. Peppermint infused to instantly cool the lips with a subtle tingle, causing the lips to flush and plump. Maxi lip helps achieve a smoother, fuller appearance. Price: $14.36 AUS Availability: Myer, David Jones and selected Pharmacies Overall Star Rating:

This Liquid lipstick got quite a mixed bag of reviews from our panellists. Some liked it, some not so much. The colour of the gloss is a beautiful soft peachy shade that looks very natural on the lips. It gives the lips a high shine and is absolutely great over the top of different coloured lip pencils. Personally I didn’t notice much plumping effect from the gloss but I didn’t mind that. The smell of the gloss did bother some of the panellists so try it before you buy. I enjoyed using this gloss mainly for the colour and found the texture and feel of it on my lips agreeable. *

Yeah!! I was keen to try it. The packaging was similar to a lot of glosses on the market. The colour was exactly what I would pick! This brand in well know so I already assumed the product would be good. The applicator didn’t hold too much gloss (which can be a problem with some brands). It certainly didn’t over apply. I found I dipped once for bottom lip and again for the top lip. It was smooth and creamy - wasn’t going to come off easily. I Loved the colour! However, it was lighter on the lips than in the packaging. Not much of the tint made it to my lips. The texture was great. It felt thick but not gluggy (like it was going to stay on well). It smelt like peppermint as in the description and it did tingle my lips for quite a while. I don’t think it actually plumped my lips though. Maybe because of the colour? I started just using it every chance I got, so that is the best recommendation I can give!

Personal Rating:

I must say at first I was a little hesitant as to whether I’d like this way of applying lipstick as I’ve never used a lipstick like this before. I found it easier to apply when I used a lip liner first. Also it looked a lot better too. I loved the neutral shade and the high gloss. It was very natural looking which I loved. It was nice and thick to apply with a delicate scent. It doesn’t taste very nice though! I would absolutely purchase it again, I was very pleasantly surprised. Personal Rating:

I loved the natural shimmery peach colour of it. I loved the applicator and it was a shiny gloss finish. I will always keep one of these glosses in my bag. The only down side of this gloss was the smell, as it wasn’t the best. Personal Rating:

The colour was great - very natural with a nice shine. Perfect for day on its own, or at night over lipstick. But, it was more like a lip-gloss than a lipstick as the colour was almost transparent and did not last long. I didn’t notice any lip plumping - there was barely a ‘tingle’ when I put it on! The application wand was OK though the high shine made it necessary to pay attention to ensure even coverage. The smell was terrible! Really medicinal, totally put me off. I had expected it to smell like menthol/mint. The texture was OK, but after a few hours became a little tacky and dried out my lips. Personal Rating:

This Liquid Lipstick comes in a stylish container and is a pleasant colour can be worn everyday. It is easy to apply though the liquid is slightly gluggy when removing the applicator from the container. The texture felt quite gritty and tacky. I found the fragrance unpleasant. Amongst other things I am a body cream addict. Therefore I am always eager to try new body creams and I can be quite critical of them. However I can not find a single thing to criticise about this amazing body souffle, neither can our panellist. From the smell to the texture to the amazingly light feel of the product it is just as luxurious as the product claims to be. It really does feel like rich whipped cream when you are applying it to your skin. It is also very moisturising, leaving the skin feeling silky smooth and well hydrated. I can’t recommend this product highly enough. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I and our panellist did. A unanimous 5 Stars. *

I was a little disappointed when I first saw the product - a white tub with a very white heavy cream that looked almost old-fashioned. But when I scooped out a little and smoothed it on my arms, I was so taken aback that I re-examined the packaging and the product. BOA’s body souffle is indeed a heavenly experience - a luxuriously textured cream that delivers all it promises. The souffle feels thick and fluffy yes, like a real souffle - and is absorbed easily. My skin felt soft for ages afterwards. The texture is delightful and the scent is very delicate. I’m addicted to the feel of BOA’s souffle and this will be the quickest I’ve ever used up a tub of moisturiser. It is by far the best I’ve ever used. Personal Rating:

When I took the lid off and saw the fluffy white cream, I just knew that I would enjoy using this product. After showering and applying this body souffle, my skin felt so silky smooth and incredibly fresh. It was a

fairly thick cream to apply which I loved and it had a gentle fragrance which was very pleasant to use. I would buy this again because who doesn’t want to spoil themselves occasionally and use a beautiful body cream to relax themselves. Personal Rating:

My initial impression of the product was that being an all natural scrub it will be healthy for my skin. It was easy to apply using a net sponge. The texture felt nice on the skin and the fragrance is pleasant not overbearing. Using the product made my skin feel clean, refreshed and soft. Personal Rating:

I absolutely loved this body Souffle. The tub was a great size. It is a very fluffy white cream. It was so smooth and it felt like a very light, delicate cream. It made my skin very smooth and it soaked into my skin very quickly. It didn’t leave my skin oily at all and I loved it so much. The texture is very smooth and luxurious and the smell was beautiful. It was very cool on my skin. I will ABSOLUTELY buy it again! It was my favourite product and the price is good for such a large tub. Personal Rating:

Without a doubt, the best body cream I’ve ever used. The cream is so appealing right from the start with the pure white colour inside the tub to the gorgeous fragrance, that I simply couldn’t wait to try it. It just glides on to the skin and absorbs almost instantly and moisturises the skin very well. My skin felt absolutely nourished and hydrated and so smooth. I can’t tell you how much I LOVE this cream. I am totally sold and will most definitely keep a tub of it in my bathroom. It is also a great big tub, making it very good value. Personal Rating: Tags:

The wattle seed’s mild abrasiveness makes it ideal as a gentle exfoliant, nourishing as it cleanses to refine pores and clarify the skin and complexion. The refreshing zesty scent awakens the senses and invigorates the mind. Size: 200ml Price: $12.95 AUS Availability: David Jones and Selected Pharmacies Overall Star Rating:

When it comes to body scrubs I believe smell plays a big part in wether you will like it or not. This body scrub is so beautifully fragranced; you can’t help but love it. The smell is very refreshing and uplifting, making me look forward to using it every time I showered. The granules in the product are in a gel base and they are very fine so they are suitable for even sensitive skins too. It is a very affordable product that will be an excellent addition to your body care routine.

The first thing I noticed about this body scrub is the beautiful lime aroma. I enjoyed using this body scrub and even though they recommend you use on a weekly basis, I liked to use it a lot more often. The tiny particles in the scrub are enough to make me feel totally refreshed and relaxed and it definitely rejuvenated my skin and left it feeling so smooth. And as for the smell, it was absolutely divine. I would buy this and I would seriously consider buying this for someone as a gift. Personal Rating:

As soon as I opened the tube I could smell the amazing fragrance. Than the product just got better. A smooth gel based body scrub that is very gentle on my skin. I found I could use it several times a week and my skin just glowed after use. The granules in the scrub are very fine and it feels like they roll over the skin, polishing it rather than scratching the skin as many other body scrubs tend to do. I found the smell of it really refreshing in the shower and I looked forward to using it. I loved the big tube it came in, it made it very easy to use in the shower. I has to be one of the best body scrubs I’ve used. Personal Rating:

This body scrub looked natural, smelt nice and I was eager to try it! I found that I had to use quite a bit of the product to feel as though I had enough of the exfoliating beads. The gel part could be spread very well. The colour didn’t look too exciting - pale brown/green colour - but I figured that it was the ‘natural’ look the company was going for. It didn’t put me off. The texture was great! The exfoliating beads were not too coarse and didn’t irritate my skin. I found I could actually use it more regularly than once a week. The smell was YUM! It was weird because it seemed to change scent from the bottle, in the shower and then later. (lime, cola!!, moisturiser) I would like it in a bigger bottle! I found that I just started using it as part of my routine anyway!

The product was very appealing. The colour was very natural and it didn’t look artificial. The application was great; however I found that I needed to use quite a lot of the product on each application. The texture was very smooth and the granules in it did refresh my skin. I would have like to have seen more granules in it. The smell was absolutely beautiful. The desert lime was so refreshing I couldn’t believe how good it smelt. It’s very nice to use to refresh your body. I would give it 4 stars. Personal Rating: Tags:

Purestuf Glow Face Scrub May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Exfoliator Reviews Leave a Comment

Purestuf Glow Face Scrub Description: Reformulated for even better care for your skin. The Purestuf Glow Face Scrub with Jojoba Beads is more gentle and effective. Using Purestuf’s ingredients that are organically pure and made with love, the new Glow Face Scrub contains natural jojoba beads to gently exfoliate and remove dead skin cells leaving your skin supple and smooth whilst the light citrus aromas uplift and refresh. Jojoba beads are nourishing waxes from the jojoba plant that enrich and condition the skin. These small spheres do not leave micro-lacerations on the skin that harsher scrubs often do. Such scrubs cause microscopic cuts can result in premature wrinkles and provide an entrance for bacteria into the skin’s surface. Jojoba Beads also do not irritate or burn the skin the way AHA/BHA or other acid products can. Perfect for all skin types, particularly dry skin. Follow with Goddess Day Cream for perfectly soft skin. . Size: 100ml Price: $60.00 AUS Availability: www.purestuf.com.au Overall Star Rating:

This face scrub from Purestuf is a truly gentle product that would be suitable for even very sensitive skins. Formulated with lovely oils such as sweet almond, macadamia, coconut and rose, it even felt moisturising on my skin. The granules are very small, therefore very gentle on the skin. Anyone with skin sensitivities, rosacea or broken capillaries would be able to use this scrub. The one down side to the scrub was the packaging, as it was noted by our panellists, it should come in a tube making it more shower friendly.

My first impression of this scrub was that it isn’t worth the price, considering the size, the packaging and the brand itself. However once I started using it I found the texture is nice and soft and it smells like food! The Jojoba beads are nothing like the normal exfoliants in the marketplace. It’s very gentle and didn’t make my skin red after use. I have tried not to use it in the shower and I found it a bit dry and the skin feels slightly pulling. Still, for the best results, use it in the shower as recommended. It would be easier to use if it came in a pump, rather than in a pot. But not a big issue after all. The steam does a great job in enhancing the results of the product - making my complexion rejuvenated and silky smooth. I would definitely purchase this product again. 5 stars! Love it. Personal Rating:

Very simple yet cute tub of product. I loved the texture. It was grainy enough to feel like it was working, but did not hurt at all! The smell is divine although I do not know what the fragrance is. I found it difficult to apply in the shower, if you have wet hands as you have to open the lid, remove the “plug”, scoop out product and replace the lids without getting too much water into the tub. The scrub was easy to wash off, and left no discernable film or trace on the skin. It left my skin feeling soft, supple and glowy. My makeup went on smoother the next day. Personal Rating:

I absolutely loved the scent and was impressed with the texture. I could tell immediately that it should be very suitable for a sensitive, easily irritated T-Zone!! And the scent is just divine!! The application was unusual at first, as I don’t usually apply a scrub every 2nd day, nor do I usually apply my facial scrub in the shower (as per the recommendations on the label). I was initially concerned it might be harsh for my sensitive T-zone, scrubbing every 2nd day. However I soon found that this was definitely not the case, that this could be used every 2nd day, and my complexion was not irritated in the slightest. I would highly recommend this to anyone with a sensitive complexion, who find many other scrubs are too harsh or abrasive. My skin is glowing from using this product, as recommended, every 2nd day. The scrub is very creamy, not at all harsh or abrasive, but still very effective. It has an ideal number of Jojoba granules, enough to be effective, without being too

abrasive. It goes on very easily, and a little definitely goes a long way. It will last many months, even with usage every 2nd day. Absolutely loved it! The only negative on the product, in my opinion is that the contents are in a jar. I would have preferred that the scrub were not in a jar, I was having to dip my wet fingertips into the contents to apply, while showering, plus potentially water could get into the jar too. I would have preferred a tube design, for product purity, to help keep water out of the contents when using in the shower, and also it would be easier to use, as recommended, in the shower. Overall it is a top quality scrub, and gentle enough for sensitive skin to tolerate well (many aren’t!!). I do think though that $60 is quite expensive for a face scrub, compared to my usual spend on a scrub! However, this is a handmade product, with top quality ingredients, so in my opinion is worth the money. I give it 4 Stars (if in a tube, not a jar, would have been a 5!!). Personal Rating:

This scrub was easy to apply. It felt more like a rich cream cleanser than a scrub. It washed off easily in the shower and didn’t leave any residue. My skin felt cleansed and moisturised but not scrubbed. The smell was wonderful - citrusy & refreshing. Great to wake you up in the morning. The texture was rich and creamy - similar to sorbolene. There didn’t seem to be many exfoliating beads/kernels in it so I wouldn’t use it as a scrub. This product is very gentle. It would be good for people with sensitive skin and could be used daily as a cleanser. The packaging looked like typical organic skincare - nothing special & it certainly didn’t look like a product I’d pay $60 for! Also I feel the 100mL size is very small for a scrub. Personal Rating:

I found this product to be too creamy on my skin as I prefer to use a gel based face scrub, but it has a lovely citrus scent. Overall it is a nice product that is very pleasant to use. Personal Rating: Tags:

Revlon Luxurious Lengths Mascara May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Mascara Reviews Leave a Comment

Revlon Luxurious Lengths Mascara Description: Lengthening & Curling Discover 50% Longer, 50% Curvier, and oh-so-silky-soft lashes Exclusive Colour Enriched, patented Smooth Gel Formula glides on lashes from base to tip lifting up and

out to maximise length and curl. No caking, no flaking, just luxurious natural looking lashes and clump free definition. Lash Extending brush works with the formula to separate lashes to new clump-free lengths. Price: $19.95 AUS Availability: Myer, David Jones, Priceline. Overall Star Rating:

A very nice mascara from Revlon with a unique applicator wand. It has shorter bristles on one side - good for applying the colour - longer bristles on the other side - good for lengthening the lashes. Our panellists and I agree that the formulation is indeed clump-free and long wearing. Over all, it is a great daytime, natural looking mascara that is excellent value for money. It won’t give you very dramatic lashes but rather provides a sleek, lengthened look. *

The brush was a great size, and also had a unique design. I liked the fact that it does 2 jobs - lengthens lashes with one side of the brush, and adds colour definition and intensity with the other side of the brush. The very effective design of the brush, made application a breeze. It really lengthened my lashes from the first coat, and 2 coats produced quite dramatic results (I have naturally long, dark lashes, and this really added lots of impact and length). Lashes were not just lengthened, but also lifted too, which I really liked. Also, my lashes looked & felt soft and conditioned, with no clumping or smudging. They remained soft and comfortable, all day. The colour I had was Blackest Black, and it is a rich, intense black shade. It wore all day, and still looked and felt fresh at days end. I loved the texture. And as an added bonus, it came off very easily and quickly, when removed late in the day. I don’t like certain mascaras that really are hard to remove, despite promises that they remove easily. This mascara really did remove very easily and thoroughly. If the product has a smell, I didn’t even notice it at all!! It’s a terrific mascara, does exactly as described, and is a bargain at under $20.00!! Personal Rating:

I really like the packaging. It’s nice, simple and elegant. The brush design is very effective. I used the flatter side to deposit the products on the lashes and the brush-side helps to even out the application, separate the lashes and prevent clumping. The mascara glides on like easily and was not too runny (that it takes a while to dry) or too dry. It didn’t make my lashes feel brittle. The colour I received was Blackest Black. It really adds depth and intensity to my lashes. The mascara itself does not maintain the curl I had achieved using an eyelash curler. It does provide impressive lengthening on my lashes, more so that I would expect from this brand. It wears pretty well throughout the day with very minimal smudging, despite being non-waterproof. My eyelids are pretty oily so this held up pretty well. Very good product all-round, I took off 1 star because the curling property is most important to me. Personal Rating:

The packaging is very elegant, looking more expensive than it actually is. I had no clumps when applying the mascara and the gel formula makes it easy to apply. It feels natural and nourishes the lashes. I found the colour not rich enough, so it might require a few more coatings. However, if you aim for a natural look, that could be good enough. The texture is standard, the lengthening effect is good. I would buy it again. It’s easy to use. Personal Rating:

I applied this to uncurled lashes, waited about 30sec and then applied a second coat. It goes on smoothly with not a clump in sight. This mascara does slightly curl but I did not notice any lift. After using for about 2 weeks, I found it started to clump a bit but the curved side of the brush was easier to use to brush out the clumps. This mascara has a very nice glossy black colour, not matte black like some which can look a little grey. This did smudge a little on more humid days but not as badly as most Chemist/Priceline type mascaras. There was no discernable smell and the texture was smooth and easily applied. Personal Rating:

The design of the product is quite different to other mascaras I use. It is a good colour and wears well. It doesn’t have any unpleasant smells. I would give this product 3 stars. Personal Rating: Tags:

Best of the Best Mascaras May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Editor's picks Leave a Comment

* Mascaras are the most often purchased makeup product on the market. Considering you are supposed to replace your mascaras every three months chances are you will purchase over 250 (give or take a few) mascaras in your lifetime. Therefore cosmetic companies are desperately trying to come up with newer and better formulations to catch your eye so it is their mascara you will be buying next. I’m not complaining at all.

I love all the new textures, formulations, brushes and innovations that are being put into mascaras. It is just so hard to keep up with them all. To help you in this regard we have bought together some of the latest and the best mascaras (according to us). If you have your own favourites, feel free to write to us and tell us why.

Christian Dior, Diorshow Blackout. Spectacular Volume Intense Black-Kohl. $49.00. This mascara will give you the most powerful and intense black colour using kohl that has been used since the ancient times to intensify the eyes. It uses a derivative of Arabic gum, similar to that used to set the Egyptian hieroglyphics for eternity. This added to a Black fix complex ensures your Charcoal- like finish remains perfect throughout the day.

Max Factor Masterpiece Volume and Definition Mascara $21.95. The secret to this mascara lies in the design of the patented brush. It is made of thermo plastic, rather than nylon, so they are uniquely soft and flexible. This means they can conform to reach every last lash from root to tip. The brush design is exactly the right size to reach the base of the lashes. It has the flexibility to reach and define even smaller lashes, bottom lashes and those at the inner and outer corners of the eyes.

Yves Saint Laurent Everlong Mascara $50.00, the first mascara with twoway lengthening action. An instant make-up effect with the new generation brush that also uses plastic bristles and is so supple it allows you to perfectly separate the lashes while coating them from base to tip. Then it has a longer term treatment action, thanks to an innovative Lash Growth Booster complex that stimulates the growth of the lashes and protects them from drying out.

L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara $23.95. Once again a unique brush design. It is called a precision multi-comb and it is a four sided brush that initially takes some time to get used to but it really does give you a fantastic effect. The formulation contains extremely fine wax globules which creates a smooth film that stretches, allowing for a very smooth application. It also has a special polymer that helps the mascara to lengthen the lashes and also has Pro-Vitamin B5.

Napoleon Long Black Mascara $30.00. Once again the brush takes centre stage with this mascara. This is actually a bent wand applicator that makes it really easy to get to all your lashes. The formula of the mascara is also very good giving an intense black look to the lashes and it also contains lash conditioners such as allantoin, candellia wax and beeswax.

A von Superfull Mascara $29.95. This mascara again leads with the new patented Clean Build Brush. It is a thermoplastic design that creates natural volume by separating and combing the lashes while delivering more mascara continuously from the base to the tip. The formulation of the mascara is called an anti-static building formula and it has a clump free delivery.

Couleur Caramel Mascara. For all those ladies who suffer with very sensitive eyes, now we have an 87% natural mascara. It is solvent-free, mainly composed of water, canuaba wax, shea butter and acacia resin. Comes in 4 colours and 2 brushes, one for short lashes and one for long. Tags:

Hair Today - Gone Tomorrow! IPL Treatment May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under TBR Features Leave a Comment

Unwanted facial and body hair has been battled by humans through the ages, dating back to what is thought as the beginning of our world. Archaeological evidence of early depilatories and hair removal tools date as far back as 4000-3000 B.C. Ancient Egyptians, Romans, Greeks used various methods including threads (threading), sharpened rocks and shells; pastes containing bees wax, sugar, quicklime (used to make cement) and orpiment (natural arsenic trisulphide); Julius Ceasar is said to have had his facial hairs plucked; During the Middle Ages, European royalty used a solution of egg shells, cat’s dung and vinegar for hair removal. Clearly, the pursuit of hair free face and body dates centuries back. Even though the ancient methods were quite fascinating and few of them are still used today in some parts of the world (sugaring, threading) they are all methods for temporary, short term hair removal, with hairs returning just days after any one of those procedures.

Where we are Today and How we Came to It Luckily, everyone today has the luxury of choice. A choice between the SHORT-TERM, PAINFUL, MESSY methods and the LONG-TERM COMFORTABLE, SAFE and EFFECTIVE option is now OURS. The magnificent hair removal method I am referring to is IPL [Intense Pulsed Light] hair removal. This brilliant light-based technology was first introduced to the world in early to mid nineties and was invented (by a laser manufacturer) with the sole purpose of replacing laser equipment for cosmetic producers. The idea was to make various treatments (hair removal, capillaries, pigmentation) possible with just the one machine (rather than using different laser machines to treat different problem). So, what is IPL and how is it different to Laser? Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an advanced light-based technology. It works by delivering shots of light of many different wavelengths over the area being treated. Light is absorbed by pigment in the hair (melanin) causing hair follicles to heat up. This results in destruction of hair follicles. Different sets of configurations are used to treat various hair and skin types and conditions. IPLs offer fast, comfortable, effective with long term results and minimal side effects (when performed by trained experienced technician). Although both IPL and Laser are light-based technologies, there are distinct differences between the two. A couple of key ones are: a) Lasers use a single wavelength of coherent light while IPLs utilize various wavelengths of incoherent light. Different laser equipment would usually operate on different wavelengths of light, each of which absorbs into (and effects) various substances in our body differently. b) IPLs typically do not require the high levels of power or energy fluence necessary for lasers. High levels of power or energy fluence used by lasers can be associated with such side effects as skin discoloration, crusting and burns/blisters. c) As a rule laser treatments are more time consuming than IPL sessions, because size of an area treated per zap/shot is usually significantly smaller. Three for the price of one!

Effectiveness, affordability, safety: Although most hair and skin types can be treated safely and effectively, IPL is works best on dark hairs/light skin combination. The results are a little harder to obtain for lighter shades of hairs and where the skin is dark olive. However, majority of people can enjoy the long term benefits of the treatments. It is a common misconception that IPL is only for the rich. It is available at affordable prices to just about anyone who has a payin job. Many clinics run monthly specials and will offer a substantial discount if you prepay a few of your treatments. A good clinic will always look after their client and will be able to come up with a solution to suit most budgets. In professional hands, IPL technology is safe. Protective eye-ware must be provided by the clinic. Some temporary reaction to treatments is possible. Short term side effects may include skin sensitivity and redness, acne-like breakouts and mild swelling. More serious side effects include burns, blisters and short-to-long-term (occasionally permanent) skin discoloration. The darker the skin color, the higher the chances of side effects. However, if you are being treated by an skilled expert the probability of serious side effects is minor. What to look for in a clinic/ therapist? Before your treatment is commenced a detailed medical history should be taken to make sure you have no lifestyle or medical contra-indications to IPL. You must tell your therapist about all medications (including herbal and topical) you are taking or have taken in the last year (some may make your skin photosensitive and some can take months to get out of your system after you stopped it). You should be consulted on various aspects of the technology and possible side effects. Discuss your expectations and treatment protocols. Find out if you will need to prepare the area which is to be treated by yourself as some clinics charge for preparation. Make sure clinic will supply hygienic single-use outfits for those special areas. Ask as many questions as possible before you start and clarify what you do not understand. Check how many sessions on average the clinician performs on a daily/weekly basis (no good having someone with 10 years experience if they only treat one patient a month). Treatment plans usually take months and can get, well, quite intimate, so probably the most important thing is to feel completely comfortable with the therapist and the level of skill you sense they have. I would advise to go to at least three consultations with different clinics and see which one is a better fit.

Pout Alert - The Best Lip Plumping Products May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Practical beauty Leave a Comment

* You just have to wander around the cosmetic floor and you will see dozens of lip plumping products. The choice is endless in the pursuit of pouting lips. Sure, you won’t get instant ‘Angelina Jolie’ lips but you can maximize what you already have. There are a few different types of lip plumpers on the market too. One type contains mild irritants like ginger, cinnamon, pepper or peppermint, which dilate blood vessels in the lips and cause a slight swelling. Another type is supposed to stimulate collagen production over a period of time. Still another just gives you the illusion of fuller lips. Below are a few samples of the different types to help you with your choice:

If you are after the serious, heavy duty plumper you can’t go past Napoleon’s Love Bite ($25.00). Love Bite Lip Plump contains capsicum pepper and cinnamon to stimulate and swell the lips, while menthol soothes and jojoba smoothes. Be warned ladies. This lip plumper is not for the fainthearted. It has a serious punch to it as the capsicum pepper kicks in. I found it OK, but if you have sensitive skin you might find it just a bit too strong in the sting department. Napoleon aims to inspire ladies “to spice up their lip life with Love Bite Lip Plump” encouraging “big is beautiful and full is fabulous.”

Another of the heavy hitters is Sally Hansen’s Lip Inflation (13.95) This gloss promises that lips become flush and plump instantly for a sexy, pouty look. Containing peppermint, ginger and cinnamon you will instantly feel the effects of it on your lips as they begin some serious tingling. This, I found very distracting. If you don’t mind the hot feel of your lips than the gloss is actually quite nice and shiny adding to the illusion of fatter lips. It also contains vitamins A and E to hydrate the lips.

Moving onto the coloured plumping products, you can’t go past Clinique’s Full Potential Lips Plump and Shine ($37.00). This gloss plumps your lips in three ways. Containing Capsicum Extract and ginger it has a mild tingling sensation and causes the lips to swell. Also contains Magnifying Pearls, consisting of three varying pearl shaped particles, providing an immediate 3-dimensional visual effect. Lips instantly have a fuller appearance. Thirdly it also contains ingredients that boost your natural collagen production, making your lips naturally fuller over time. They also come in 10 different colours. This is one of my favourites.

The other is a new product from YSL Shiny Lip Plumper SPF 10 (45.00). This supple, stretchy, non-sticky gloss contains microspheres that are composed of dehydrated hyaluronic acid, that swell and smooth the lips’ surface, giving them an instant, visible plumper look. There was no tingling sensation with this gloss at all on my lips but they did look nice and full. It also contains mint oil to cool, wheat germ oil and Chilean rose bush oil to treat and give the lips shine. Available in 3 shades.

If you are after something really gentle and non scary, try Joey New York Super Duper Lips kit. This gel formula’s main ingredient is honey, known to be a natural humectant to plump, hydrate and smooth the skin. The gel will make your lips smoother, softer and more “kiss-able”. I didn’t notice any huge plumping effects from the gel but it did make my lips very soft and moist. And if you are after something completely benign, without even a hint of tingling, burning or anything even remotely happening to your lips but you still would like the seductive pout, listen up.

ModelCo has the Illusionist Lip Enhancer Kit. Containing an awesome skin colour, soft wax pencil that allows you to create the perfect pout by giving the illusion of natural, fuller lips. All you do is use it as you would your normal lip pencil outlining your natural lip line, then you go outside of your lipline just a fraction. You won’t end up with clown lips but you will be amazed just how full your lips will look with just a fraction of a millimetre added to your lips. Than you apply your favourite lipstick or lip gloss. It comes complete with ModelCo sharpener! With all these products on the market you could assume that we are all walking around looking extremely seductive with our full and voluptuous lips. Not so. These products will only slightly enhance your natural lips and at most for a few hours. These products also work better on some than others. And even though I was trying lip plumpers all week, not one person asked me if I had anything done to my lips. Although I assure you I was putting in my best effort pouting. I noticed an increase in the fullness of my lips but it was obviously not enough to alert others to the fact that I now possessed luscious lips. For that I will obviously have to go to my friendly local plastic surgeon. Tags:

Be as Happy as You Want to Be May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under TBR Features Leave a Comment

Almost everyone have heard the hit single ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ by Bobby McFerrin. The song has a very catchy way of conveying its message of being happy to everyone. Bobby Mcferiin’s simple message surely made a lot of people by telling them not to worry. Living a happy, resilient and optimistic life is wonderful, and is also good for your health. Being happy actually protects you from the stresses of life. Stress is linked to top causes of death such as heart disease, cancer and stroke.

One of the better things ever said is - ‘The only thing in life that will always remain the same is change’, and in our life we have the power to make the necessary changes if we want to. Even if we find ourselves in an unbearable situation we can always find solace in the knowledge that it too would change. Social networks or relationships are essential to happiness. People are different, accept people for who or what they are, avoid clashes, constant arguments, and let go of all kinds of resentments. If arguments seem unavoidable still try and make an effort to understand the situation and you might just get along with well with Happiness is actually found in everyone, increasing it is a way to make a life more wonderful and also more healthy. To be happy is relatively easy, just decide to be a happy person. Abraham Lincoln observed that most people for most of the time can choose how happy or stressed, how relaxed or troubled, how bright or dull their outlook to be.

The choice is simple really, choose to be happy. There are several ways by which you can do this. Being grateful is a great attitude. We have so much to be thankful for. Thank the taxi driver for bringing you home safely, thank the cook for a wonderful dinner and thank the guy who cleans your windows. Also thank the mailman for bringing you your mails, thank the policeman for making your place safe and thank goodness for being alive. News is stressful. Get less of it. Some people just can’t start their day without their daily dose of news. Try and think about it, 99% of the news we hear or read is bad news. Starting the day with bad news does not seem to be a sensible thing to do. Manage your time. Time is invaluable and too important to waste. Time management can be viewed as a list of rules that involves scheduling, setting goals, planning, creating lists of things to do and prioritizing. These are the core basics of time management that should be understood to develop an efficient personal time management skill. These basic skills can be fine tuned further to include the finer points of each skill that can give you that extra reserve to make the results you desire.

Laugh and laugh heartily everyday. Heard a good joke? Tell your friends or family about it. As they also say -’Laughter is the best medicine’. Express your feelings, affections, friendship and passion to people around you. They will most likely reciprocate your actions. Try not to keep pent up anger of frustrations, this is bad for your health. Instead find ways of expressing them in a way that will not cause more injury or hurt to anyone. Working hard brings tremendous personal satisfaction. It gives a feeling of being competent in finishing our tasks. Accomplishments are necessary for all of us, they give us a sense of value. Work on things that you feel worthy of your time. Learning is a joyful exercise. Try and learn something new everyday. Learning also makes us expand and broaden our horizons. And could also give us more opportunities in the future. Run, jog, walk and do other things that your body was made for.

Feel alive. Avoid exposure to negative elements like loud noises, toxins and hazardous places. These are the few simple things you can do everyday to be happy. And always remember the quote from Abraham Lincoln, he says that, “Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Tags:

Anti-Aging Products May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under TBR Features Leave a Comment

* We want to believe. Cosmetic advertisements throw out words like candy: glimmer, luminous, fresh and dewy, moisturizing. It’s difficult to not get drawn into the message.

BUY ME and your eyes will be smoky and seductive; your skin will be as smooth as a baby’s bottom; your hair will become silken strands. But have you realized that your brain reacts to different words as the decades roll on. Young women look at ads and are drawn to promises of glimmering shimmering eyes and lips that glisten and pout. In your twenties, you want to shine. When you enter your thirties, you start to realize that moisture is something that must be locked in. Suddenly, you’re forty and you’re looking for damage control. Hit your fifties, and it’s a case of advanced repair. After that, only resurrection will work!

Advertisements for anti-ageing products seem to be conceived in laboratories, using a vocabulary that includes creatine, retinoid, hyaluronic acid, elastin, and, yes, even nanotechnology. It’s not enough to have Jane Fonda telling you about the future of her skin. You know that a team of dermatologists, clinicians and botanists have worked hard to create a product that will hydrate, revitalize and restore your skin on a cellular level. By the time you’ve finished reading the ad, your feet will be out the door, running to the nearest chemist or department store. But do anti-aging products work? Yes. Maybe. Sometimes. With scientific advancements being made in this billion dollar anti-ageing industry, some cosmetic houses have created products that do work. Provided you don’t expect your 50-year old skin to look like that of a 25 year old, you will not be disappointed. Don’t we all have enough crises in our lives without having to worry about ageing skin? Look around for a product that appeals to you; use it faithfully, eat healthy, exercise, and check ’skin crisis’ off your list of things to worry about. Defy your age. It’s only a number. Tags:

We were very excited to try these excellent nail polishes. As our panelists agree, the colours are great, the formulation and texture is smooth, the application is easy and the drying time is good. On top of it all you can rest assured that you are using a product that contains no nasty chemicals. Be sure to check out the fabulous autumn colour range, you are sure to fall in love with at least one colour from Zoya.

My first impression of this nail polish was a very nice bottle and the colour looked very pretty. It was very easy to apply and dries up very well. The colour is very pretty and I would find it suitable for autumn. The texture is even and the smell is similar to other nail polishes I have used before. Personal Rating: _

I loved the deep maroon colour, it had with a tinge of shimmer. This dark deep maroon colour is great for evening wear. It was so easy to apply as it just glided on so it made the job quick and easy (no messy finger nails). It dries with a high gloss finish. I found the smell to be the same as any other nail polish. It’s one of the best nail polish I’ve tried, since it dries in almost an instant and doesn’t chip easily. Personal Rating:

I loved the shades of colour on the bottle and was excited about trying this nail polish. It went on very smoothly and looked fabulous after 2 coats. I tried the colour ‘Anastasia’ which in the bottle looked quite dark. It actually looks different in different lights and sometimes looks purple & then it looks a brown shade. I really felt good wearing this colour on my hands and toes. The smell of this product was the usual nail polish smell and the texture of the polish was thick enough to make your nails look great. I certainly would buy this product again. I would love to see their range of colours.

Personal Rating:

The packaging is cute and functional. I used the product on my toenails as I can’t wear nail polish to work. It went on quickly and wasn’t too runny or thick. It dried quickly so I could jump into bed without worrying about ruining my sheets. I had a rich coppery brown colour with gold shimmer called Collette. I only needed one coat to get proper colour and coverage. The product smells pretty similar to normal nail polishes. I expected it to have a less intense smell than regular nail polishes due to the advertised lack of the harsh chemicals normally found in commercial polish. The polish dried in just a few minutes which was excellent! I would purchase it again because I like the fact that it dries so quickly and doesn’t have the horrible chemicals in it that other nail polishes do. Personal Rating:

I loved the colour; I couldn’t wait to try it on. The application was great. It smoothed itself out when it was on the nail and it wasn’t gluggy and thick but it was smooth. The colour (charity) was gorgeous, because it had a pearly shine to it. The colour wasn’t too dark but it still has a very autumn/winter look to it. The texture was very, very smooth. The smell was overpowering like any other nail polish. What let it down was the amount of time the nail polish lasted on my nail. After 2 days at the most, it had chipped on most of my nails, even though I applied a top coat. Personal Rating: Tags:

Natio Ultra Shiny Lip Gloss May 14, 2009 by admin Filed under Lip Product Reviews Comments Off

Natio Ultra Shiny Lip Gloss Description: Six fruity flavours with soft luminous shades that you’ll adore. Vitamin E, shea butter, jojoba and avocado oil to moisturise. Price: $9.05 AUS Availability: Myer, David Jones & Pharmacies Overall Star Rating:

If you are after a well priced, moisturising, shiny lip gloss, look no further. This gloss delivers all you would need in a natural looking lip gloss. The texture of the gloss is a little thicker than some of the other glosses, however this allows the gloss to stay on the lips longer making reapplication less frequent. The product contains very fine shimmer particles adding to the gloss factor. Over all this is an excellent product to use and at this price you can have a few of the colour in the range which are all very appealing.

It smells yummy and the texture is nice and sticky, that’s how I like my lip gloss. It looks great on, shiny and natural and the sticky texture means it stays on for longer. The tube leads you to believe it will be quite pink on your lips but actually it’s very nude on, so it would be good dabbed over a coloured lip stick, but great if you just want a nice natural shine. The smell is delicious and juicy. I definitely want one in every colour. 5 big fat Stars! Personal Rating:

I really liked that the gloss was in a tube and I loved the colour I was sent (Cherry). It is not a colour I would normally wear but I actually really like the colour, now I have been wearing it for a few days. The gloss also has a slight shimmer to it which helped to make my lips look fuller which was a big plus. The application of the gloss was very easy as it has an applicator tip. I found the product went on really easily and evenly. The texture of the gloss is quite creamy and glossy without being too sticky. I did expect the smell to be fruitier; it had a slight plastic smell. I would definitely purchase this product in the future, I have already looked at the other colours in the range and I also like Coconut & Passionfruit. I would give this product a 4 Star rating, the gloss was long lasting which was great and I think the price is very affordable. I can’t wait to try some of the other colours in the range. Personal Rating:

I like how the product comes in a squeeze tube, which means that it doesn’t get too messy in applying the lipgloss and is hygienic. I initially found it quite thick to apply on my lips, since I normally use lip glosses of a thinner or stickier consistency. However, due to its thick consistency, the lipgloss did last longer than other lipglosses, and lasted a few hours. Very sheer in colour, and looked very natural with my skin tone. It did give my lips a shiny look, and this was due to the fine shimmer in the colour. Fortunately, this lipgloss, does not leave any flecks of shimmer on my lips as it wears of. I think you definitely get a soft, luminous shine with this lipgloss, rather than a high gloss, or transparent, plastic shine. This would go well with more of a casual, natural look, rather than something you would wear to stand out. The texture was quite thick and not sticky at all, which is great if you are after a moisturising, non-sticky lipgloss. I would liken the texture to more of a thick balm, or salve.

It was very moisturising and I could feel the shea butter and other moisturising oils at work! I didn’t think the lipgloss smelt like Passionfruit or another fruity scent. This product would be great to use in the winter, or any other time your lips need to be moisturised, since it is a thick lipgloss. I would probably purchase the other shades, since I’m a fan of fruity lipglosses. This is a very well priced product. I have had other lipglosses of similar size, and they last a long time, even through constant application, so this product is definitely good value for money . Personal Rating:

I thought the packaging was good, but it was nothing special. However the colour looked quite nice. The colour was great; the nude colour was wearable during the day irrelevant of what other makeup I wore. It is easy to apply, although I found the lip applicator to really hurt my lips when I applied it, because of a sharp bit in the plastic. For a lip gloss it is not overly sticky, which is always a good thing. The texture was great, not too stick and quite smooth and moisturising. The coconut smell was very appealing; I got a few comments on how nice it smelt. I would be inclined to purchase it, mainly because of the smell and colour, and how shiny it looked on my lips with the tiny glitter particles catching the light. I would give it 4 Stars, because it was really nice to use, however there was nothing particularly special about it that would make it a must have product. Personal Rating:

It reminds me of Lancome’s “Juicy Tube” with the same kind of design. Application is a breeze due to the slanted applicator. Although with this kind of packaging sometimes too much product comes out at once. Very bright coral colour in the tube, but goes on sheer (buildable coverage) and gives a natural glossy look to my lips. The gloss is very thick in texture and there’s a slight sweet taste to the product. It also has a very strong melon fragrance that lingers. I give it 3 Stars, because this product is very hard to remove and leaves a sticky residue on my lips. Also the fragrance and taste is too strong and overpowering for me. Personal Rating: Tags:
