Diana Thater Hasta el 3 de marzo se puede disfrutar de la exposición de la californiana Diana Thater, quien desde los años 90 es una pionera de la videoinstalación. En el Museo Guggenheim Bilbao se descubren sus instalaciones que señalan las sutiles diferencias que existen entre ver y mirar. Until 3 March you can enjoy the exhibition by Californian artist Diana Thater, who has been a pioneer of video-installation art since the 1990s. You can discover her installations at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, where she shows the subtle differences between seeing and looking.

Ópera. La voz humana Opera. The human voice La directora y dramaturga bilbaína Marta Eguilior lleva a escena, el 4 y el 5 de marzo, esta obra de Francis Poulenc con libreto de Jean Cocteau, en el Teatro Arriaga. Cada gesto, cada palabra y cada respuesta del piano, forman un monólogo y una historia de amor. The director and playwright from Bilbao Marta Eguilor will bring to the stage, on 4 and 5 March, this opera by Francis Poulenc with a libretto by Jean Cocteau, at the Arriaga Theatre. Each gesture, each word and each reply from the piano form a monologue and a love story.

SAIL In Festival

La XVIII edición de Musika-Música, el primer fin de semana de marzo, se centra en la dinámica cultural y musical de las ciudades de Londres y de Nueva York. El festival atrae al Palacio Euskalduna a un importante número de intérpretes y orquestas del más alto nivel.

Se celebra del 7 al 10 de marzo y es un referente internacional de la cultura sobre la navegación a vela. Propone atractivas proyecciones, exposiciones y charlas con invitados de todo el mundo. La pasión por la vela inunda la Sala BBK y el Museo Marítimo Ría de Bilbao.

The 18th edition of Musika-Música, during the first weekend of March, focuses on the cultural and musical dynamic of the cities of London and New York. The festival attracts a significant of top-level performers and orchestras to the Euskalduna Conference Centre.

It is held from 7 to 10 March and is an international reference of sailing culture. It includes attractive screenings, exhibitions and talks with guests from around the world. Passion for sailing will fill the Sala BBK and the Bilbao Maritime Museum.

Llega a Bilbao Bob Dylan que actúa el viernes 26 de abril en el Bizkaia Arena en un concierto encuadrado en su gira interminable ‘Never Ending Tour’. Dylan recorre su extensa discografía sin olvidar sus grandes éxitos, considerados himnos de la cultura histórica musical.

During Easter Week, from 17 to 21 April, you can’t miss the many events of the Basque Fest in Bilbao. Music, Basque folklore, guided tours of the Old Quarter, boat rides on the river, the craft fair, the flower market, Basque sports exhibitions and the best gastronomy.

Hasta el 28 de abril / Until 28 April La exposición arranca en el año 1968, en el que la nueva generación de artistas vascos se incorporaron a la escena artística. Una selección de casi 150 obras y cerca de 100 artistas de varias generaciones que permite conocer las formas de modernización del arte y valorar la trascendencia que han tenido. Se completa con ciclos de cine, música y conferencias.

The exhibition starts with the year 1968, when the new generation of Basque artists joined the art scene. A selection of almost 150 works and close to 100 artists from several generations to shed light on the ways in which art has been modernised and to assess their importance and influence. It is completed with a series of films, music and conferences.

Juan Muñoz. Hanging figures Hasta el 2 de junio / Until 2 June Es considerado uno de los renovadores de la escultura internacional de las últimas décadas del siglo XX. Está compuesta por dos figuras humanas realizadas en resina y con rasgos y vestimentas indiferenciados. 10

Considered one of the renovators of international sculpture during the last decades of the 20th century. It is comprised of two human figures made in resin and with indistinct features and clothing.

The alphabet of the Bilbao Museum Hasta el 2 de junio / Until 2 June Un camino compuesto por letras y palabras en cuatro idiomas (euskera, español, inglés y francés) que contextualiza las obras y sumerge al espectador en una travesía alfabética que recorre la historia del arte a través de sus diversas épocas, estilos y disciplinas. En esta ocasión, son las palabras, siguiendo el orden alfabético, las que agrupan las obras de arte en cada sala. Cuenta con la colaboración del escritor Kirmen Uribe.

Made up of letters and words in four languages —Basque, Spanish, English and French— the itinerary contextualises the works and invites visitors to take an alphabetical tour through the history of art, pausing to examine the different periods, styles and disciplines. On this occasion, it is the words —arranged in alphabetical order— that group the works on display in each room. With the collaboration of writer Kirmen Uribe.

El Museo Vasco de Bilbao está situado en pleno Casco Viejo de la ciudad, ocupando el edificio del siglo XVII del que fuera Iglesia y Colegio San Andrés de la Compañía de Jesús. En su planta baja se encuentra uno de los atractivos principales del Museo para sus visitantes, el claustro, con su nueva cubierta de vidrio cuyo objetivo es el de mejorar la conservación de las piezas que se encuentran en el patio y el de lograr una ampliación del espacio del centro para la realización de actividades culturales. Es un espacio único que expone sarcófagos, escudos de armas y el famoso ídolo del Mikeldi. Este se encontró junto a la desaparecida ermita de Mikeldi en Iurreta (Bizkaia). Está realizado en un único bloque de arenisca procedente de los alrededores de Durango y representa de forma esquemática a un animal, un verraco, entre cuyas patas y bajo el vientre aprisiona un disco. Es una escultura de carácter mágico-religioso. También hay aquí 12

The Basque Museum in Bilbao is located in the heart of the Old Quarter City, occupying the 17th-century building that used to be the Church and School of San Andrés de la Compañía de Jesús. The ground floor features one of the Museum´s main attractions for visitors, the cloisters, with their new glass roof, the purpose of which is to improve the conservation of the items in the patio and to expand the centre's space for cultural activities. It is a unique space that exhibits sarcophagi, coats of arms and the famous Mikeldi idol. The latter was found beside the now disappeared chapel of Mikeldi in Iurreta (Biscay). It is made with a single block of sandstone from near Durango and it represents the rough outline of an animal, a boar, with a disc between its legs and under its abdomen. It is a magical-religious sculpture. There is also a reproduction of the Transept of Kurutziaga, the original of which is in Durango.

Versa sobre la cultura pastoril, El Mar de los Vascos y las Artesanías Textiles (lino y lana). La segunda planta se centra en la cerámica y ferrerías, con piezas de la cerámica popular vasca, lozas y porcelanas. Y su tercera planta está concentrada en la Historia, con una maqueta de Bizkaia en tres dimensiones. Los segundos sábados de cada mes, en este caso el 9 de marzo y el 13 de abril, y hasta junio (de 19 a 21 horas), se organiza en el claustro una romería participativa de la mano de AIKO Taldea para difundir la danza tradicional vasca.

The first floor of the Basque Museum is dedicated to ethnography. It deals with shepherding culture, the Basques and the Sea and Textile Craftsmanship (linen and wool). The second floor focuses on ceramics and ironworks, with Basque ceramics, pottery and porcelain items. And its third floor focuses on History, with a scale model of Biscay in three dimensions. On the second Saturday of each month, in this case 9 March and 13 April and until June (from 19:00 to 21:00), a participative procession is organised in the cloisters by AIKO Taldea to popularise traditional Basque dances.

The 12th edition of Gutun Zuria approaches the connection between words and art, attempting to remove borders and build bridges between both concepts, starting by seeing books as a creative process open to artistic expression and at the same time, to regard images as a testimony and a document. Art and literature, word and image; they act in parallel, not complementing each other, and seek the involvement of readers and spectators in a simultaneous narrative.

MUSIKA-MÚSICA 2019 Hasta el 3 de marzo / Until 3 March Musika-Música 2019 se centra en la dinámica cultural y musical de dos grandes ciudades: Londres y New York. La decimoctava edición de este Festival, organizado por la Fundación Bilbao 700 con el patrocinio del Ayuntamiento de Bilbao, se celebra hasta el 3 de marzo en Bilbao. Musika-Música es un festival celebrado de forma anual de carácter temático, ya que en cada una de sus ediciones las actuaciones se enmarcan en una época, en un estilo o en un compositor concreto. Cada año atrae a un relevante número de intérpretes y de orquestas del más alto nivel y de muy variada procedencia al Palacio Euskalduna, donde tiene lugar este evento a lo largo del primer fin de semana de marzo. La elección este año de las dos grandes urbes para comenzar la historia urbana de la música se entiende como una metáfora de los cambios radicales del mundo actual, ya que son las ciudades los grandes escenarios de las expresiones culturales más diversas y también de los grandes retos socio-políticos. Los compositores británicos en Musika-Música 2019 son, entre otros, Arthur Sullivan, Edgard Elgar, Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams y Benjamin Britten; y los estadounidenses George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber y Leonard Bernstein.

Musika-Música 2019 focuses on the cultural and musical dynamic of two big cities: London and New York. The eighteenth edition of this Festival, organised by Fundación Bilbao 700 with the sponsorship of Bilbao City Council, will be held until 3 March in Bilbao. Musika-Música is an annual thematic festival, as in each of its editions the performances are based on a specific period, style or composer. Every year it attracts a significant number of top-level performers and orchestras from a wide variety of origins to the Euskalduna Conference Centre, where this event will be held during the first weekend of March. This year the choice of these two large cities to start the urban history of music is understood as a metaphor of the current world's radical changes, as cities are the big stages of the most diverse cultural expressions and also of the big social and political challenges. basque FEST, LA CITA DE REFERENCIA CON LA CULTURA VASCA basque FEST, el festival de la cultura y vanguardia vasca, retorna a Bilbao del 17 al 21 de abril para amenizar las fiestas de Semana Santa. Durante estas vacaciones, este evento tratará de reforzar el liderazgo cultural de la ciudad a través de la música, el deporte, la cultura, la gastronomía, la compra de productos locales y este año, también, del cine. Estos son los seis elementos protagonistas de una iniciativa dirigida tanto a la ciudadanía de Bilbao como a sus muchos visitantes durante esta época del año. Este festival reúne tradición, innovación, arte, vanguardia y, en especial, propone muchos momentos y citas para disfrutar con sus cerca de 250 actividades programadas por muchos puntos de la ciudad, la gran mayoría de ellas de carácter gratuito. Ya el año pasado fueron más de 100.000 las personas que asistieron a conciertos, talleres, catas, paseos en barco, mercados o juegos infantiles. Por tanto, la cultura vasca, su música, su cine, su literatura, su gastronomía, su hostelería y comercio, 36

y su deporte se dan a conocer a través de esta nueva edición de basque FEST, que supone durante varios días un acontecimiento único, abierto e internacional. Procesiones de Semana Santa Es muy posible que en los paseos por Bilbao durante las fiestas de Semana Santa os encontréis con distintas procesiones. Este año 2019 se celebran desde el 12 de Abril, el viernes de Pasión, hasta el 21 de Abril, el domingo de Resurrección. La tradicional Semana Santa bilbaína se caracteriza siempre por su seriedad y recogimiento. Cada una de las 14 procesiones y un Via Crucis que entre esos días citados arriba recorren las arterias de la ciudad, con más de 4.200 cofrades y 35 pasos procesionales de entre los siglos XVII y XXI, tiene sus propias características y cambia según los barrios y calles por las que salen los fantásticos y valiosos pasos que portan de artistas muy reconocidos. La historia refleja que las procesiones de Bilbao son anteriores a su fundación en 1300. Y en lo referente a las procesiones penitenciales, ya se realizaban antes de la fundación de la Cofradía de la Santa Vera Cruz, en 1554. Las procesiones de la Semana Santa bilbaína atesoran, por tanto, 465 años. Cofrades de todas las edades, bandas de tambores, cornetas y pasión se unen en este evento religioso y cultural que atrae a miles de personas. 40

Easter Week Processions It is very possible that when strolling through Bilbao during the Easter Week festivities you may see various processions. In 2019 they are celebrated from 12 April, Friday of Sorrows, until 21 April, Resurrection Sunday. Bilbao's traditional Easter Week is always characterised by its solemnity. Each one of the 14 processions and a Via Crucis which between the above-mentioned dates walk through the city's streets, with more than 4200 brotherhood members and 35 processional floats from between the 17th and 21st centuries, have their own features and change from one district and street to another, carrying fantastic and valuable processional floats created by highly renowned artists. History tells us that Bilbao’s processions date back to before the city was founded in the year 1300. And as for the penitential processions, they were already performed before the Santa Vera Cruz Brotherhood was founded in 1554. Bilbao’s Easter Week processions are, therefore, 465 years old. Brotherhood members of all ages, percussion and cornet bands and passion converge at this religious and cultural event that attracts thousands of people.

Pasión Viviente de Balmaseda Otra de las recomendaciones de esta Bilbao Pocket para vuestras vacaciones de Semana Santa es la de organizar una jornada muy especial en Balmaseda, la que es la primera Villa de la provincia de Bizkaia. Y es que esta localidad va a ser de nuevo uno de los destinos elegidos por miles de personas durante esta Semana Santa 2019. Durante el Jueves Santo 18 de abril en horario de tarde-noche (a las 19 horas la Procesión de los Pasos y a las 19.30 horas la Última Cena), y el Viernes Santo 19 de abril en horario de mañana y tarde (desde las 9.30 horas el Juicio de Pilato), esta población de Balmaseda se vuelca en una representación viviente de impresionante realismo que se desarrolla en las mismas calles y en las plazas de la localidad. Desde finales del siglo XIX, en Balmaseda se interpreta una célebre Pasión Viviente que describe las últimas horas de la vida de Jesús.

Aquí participan, después de siete meses de ensayos, alrededor de 350 actores con 650 personas involucradas en el Vía Crucis, la mayoría habitantes del pueblo. Son 50.000 las personas que acuden cada año a Balmaseda para ser testigos de escenas como la procesión de los pasos con los romanos y los penitentes cargando las cruces, la representación de la Última Cena, la captura de Jesús, el ahorcamiento de Judas, el juicio de Jesús ante Pilato, la flagelación, el encuentro con la Virgen María y con María Magdalena, el Vía Crucis y la Crucifixión, instante en el que algunos de los presentes no pueden evitar las lágrimas. Se pide puntualidad a los asistentes porque 15 minutos antes del comienzo de las representaciones se cierran los accesos. BILBAO DOWNHILL. OPEN ESPAÑA 2019 / OPEN SPAIN 2019 14 de abril / 14 April La fecha señalada para esta cita tan espectacular es el domingo 14 de abril. Es, además, una de las cuatro pruebas que forman el Open de España de Descenso. Bilbao acoge de nuevo esta prueba internacional de Downhill, descenso extremo en bicicleta de montaña que cada año atrae a más espectadores. El circuito, de casi dos kilómetros, tiene salida en el monte Arraiz y los últimos 300 metros son urbanos con final en la plaza de Rekalde. Es la prueba de categorías UCI más importante a nivel nacional.

El tranvía hace un recorrido por los puntos clave de la ciudad y puedes subirte y bajarte cuando quieras para ver Bilbao a tu ritmo. - “Llevo yo la Barik”, aclara Diego. Se trata del monedero electrónico para el pago del transporte público en Bilbao. Merece la pena utilizarlo porque simplifica y abarata los trayectos. El transporte público en la villa es frecuente y excelente.

Os recomendamos algunos de los muchos locales que se caracterizan por servir un vermut o un preparado especial y por ofrecer unas sabrosas rabas. VERMUTS Ander. Suele verse a muchas personas en el exterior del Ander, un histórico local de la parte vieja, manteniendo esas copas con el famoso marianito que sirven hasta casi rebosar el recipiente. • PUENTE BIZKAIA: El puente-transbordador que enlaza Las Arenas (Getxo) con Portugalete y que ha sido declarado monumento de la humanidad por el Comité del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO, tiene más de 125 años..
