La cultura milenaria de esta tierra está en continua evolución y tiene su gran cita con residentes y turistas en Basque Fest, durante los días de Semana Santa. Las calles de Bilbao se llenan de actividades de ocio, música, exposiciones, deporte tradicional, propuestas gastronómicas durante estas fechas en las que los días se prolongan en horas de sol y la naturaleza quiere retomar el pulso vital que el invierno le robó.

Bilbao is the entranceway to the "Basque universe", the great city in which Basque traditional culture and global artistic trends merge in a cosmopolitan, open and inclusive atmosphere. The millennial culture of this land is in continuous evolution and its big meeting with residents and tourists will take place at the Basque Fest, during the days of Holy Week.

The streets of Bilbao will be full of leisure activities, music, exhibitions, traditional sports and gastronomic proposals during these days in which the hours of sunlight are lengthened and nature seeks to take back the vital pulse that the winter stole from it.

The 16th edition of the Musika-Música Festival will be held in the Euskalduna Conference Centre. This international event will feature composers Mahler, Dvořák, Smetana and Janáček.

Love of Lesbian is one of the most successful and outstanding bands in the national indie rock scene and of course will be performing at the Sala Santana 27 as part of its “Halley 2017” tour.

Llega la Regata bilbaína Ingenieros-Deusto al más puro estilo británico. Compiten las tripulaciones de la Escuela de Ingenieros y de la Universidad de Deusto. Tiene lugar el viernes 7 de Abril, a las 17 horas.

Rosana takes centre stage again with her new album titled ‘En la memoria de la piel’, in which she radiates energy. Rosana will devote herself to her audience at the Campos Elíseos Theatre.

Bilbao’s Engineers-Deusto Regatta is here in the purest British style. The crews from the School of Engineers and the University of Deusto will race each other. It will take place on 7 April, at 17:00.

Democracy in America, a work inspired by and freely adapted from the book of the same name by Alexis de Tocqueville, will be staged at the Arriaga Theatre in Italian, overtitled in Basque and in Spanish.

Hermann y Margrit Rupf fueron los primeros coleccionistas privados suizos del arte abstracto. La exposición reúne 70 piezas de la Colección Rupf en el Museo Guggenheim Bilbao.

La exposición Renoir: Intimidad en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao acoge más de 60 obras del pintor impresionista francés Pierre-Auguste Renoir, procedentes de museos y colecciones de todo el mundo.

Hermann and Margrit Rupf were the first Swiss private abstract art collectors. The exhibition in the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum includes 70 items from the Rupf Collection.

The Renoir: Intimacy exhibition at the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts includes more than 60 paintings by French Impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, brought in from museums and collections around the world.

La Fundación cuenta con más de 900 obras. Hermann Rupf (1880-1962) fue uno de los primeros coleccionistas que, en el París de 1907, comenzó a adquirir obras de Picasso, Georges Braque y de artistas del Fauvismo.

The Rupfs were the first Swiss private abstract art collectors. The Foundation has more than 900 works. Bernés Hermann Rupf (1880-1962) was one of the first collectors who, in the Paris of 1907, started to purchase works by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Fauvist artists.

Renoir: Intimidad, reúne más de 60 obras del pintor impresionista francés Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges, 1841-Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1919), procedentes de museos y colecciones de todo el mundo.

Han sido seleccionadas por Guillermo Solana, director artístico del Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, con el objetivo de mostrar la importancia de los valores táctiles de su pintura. La exposición permite descubrir cómo el pintor se sirve de las sugerencias táctiles de volumen, materia o textura para recrear escenas de intimidad, no sólo erótica sino también social, amistosa o familiar. Por otra parte, pone de relieve cómo esa peculiar atmósfera y la delicada sensualidad de su pincelada consiguen que se establezca una conexión entre el espectador y su obra.

Renoir: Intimacy includes more than 60 works by impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges, 1841-Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1919), from museums and collections around the world. They have been selected by Guillermo Solana, artistic director of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, with the aim of showing the importance of the tactile values of his paintings. The exhibition allows us to discover how the painter uses tactile suggestions of volume, material or texture to recreate scenes of intimacy, not only erotic but also social, friendship or family situations. On the other hand, it also highlights how this peculiar atmosphere and the delicate sensuality of his brushstrokes manage to establish a connection between the spectator and his work.

The Bilbao Art District encompasses the area between the Maritime Museum, Albia Gardens, Colón de Larreátegui and the Paseo Abandoibarra. The most important art galleries in the city are located in this area; the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Sala Rekalde, as well as restoration workshops, and old bookshops.

Outdoor sculptures by contemporary artists such as Dalí, Chillida, Koons, Bourgeois and Kapoor are also present in an environment surrounded by outstanding architecture (from Gehry, Siza, Moneo, Pelli, Soriano, Ferrater and Isozaki right up to Calatrava).

AZKUNA ZENTROA

El Azkuna Zentroa, anteriormente Alhóndiga Bilbao, fue un antiguo almacén de vino, reconvertido en centro de ocio y cultura. Edificado entre 1905 y 1909 por Ricardo Bastida, supuso una nueva idea de edificio en cuanto a su implantación y por el empleo de técnicas novedosas, siendo uno de los primeros ejemplos de arquitectura pública en hormigón armado. Finalmente, fue reformado como centro cívico polivalente, con la intervención del diseñador Philippe Starck.

Azkuna Zentroa, formerly Alhóndiga Bilbao, was an old wine warehouse, reconverted into a leisure and culture centre. Built between 1905 and 1909 by Ricardo Bastida, it was a new idea of building because of its location and the use of new techniques, as it was one of the first examples of public architecture built in reinforced concrete. Finally, it was refurbished as a multi-purpose civic centre, with the intervention of designer Philippe Starck.

Procesiones de Semana Santa Durante las fiestas de Semana Santa, Bilbao despliega su fervor religioso con las procesiones. Este año las procesiones comenzarán el 7 de Abril y concluirán el 16 de Abril. La Semana Santa Bilbaína se caracteriza por su seriedad y su austeridad, si bien cada una de las 13 procesiones que en 10 días recorren las calles de la ciudad con más de 3.000 cofrades tiene su propia idiosincrasia, que varía según los barrios por los que salen y los pasos que portan. El cartel de la Semana Santa Bilbaína 2017 representa a la imagen de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, portada por la Cofradía del Nazareno.

Es la imagen más inconfundible y popular de la Semana Santa Bilbaína. Dice la historia que las procesiones de Bilbao son anteriores a su fundación en 1300. En cuanto a las procesiones penitenciales, se realizaban también antes de la fundación de la Cofradía de la Santa Vera Cruz en 1554, cuando el Ayuntamiento las encargó. Las procesiones de la Semana Santa Bilbaína tienen, por tanto, más de 463 años.

Holy Week Processions During the Holy Week celebrations, Bilbao unleashes its religious fervour with its processions.

This year the processions will start on 7 April and will end on 16 April. Bilbao’s Holy Week is characterised by its gravity and austerity, though each one of the 13 processions that over the course of 10 days walk through the streets of the city with more than 3000 members has its own idiosyncrasy, which varies depending on the neighbourhoods they go through and the floats they carry.

The poster of Bilbao’s Holy Week 2017 represents the image of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth, carried by the Nazareno Brotherhood. It is the most unmistakeable and popular image of Bilbao’s Holy Week. History tells us that Bilbao’s processions date back to before the city was founded in the year 1300. As for the penitential processions, they were also carried out before the Santa Vera Cruz Brotherhood was founded in 1554, when the City Council commissioned them.

Bilbao’s Holy Week processions are, therefore, more than 463 years old.

La Pasión Viviente de Balmaseda

The Live Passion in Balmaseda

Balmaseda, la primera Villa del territorio de Bizkaia, va a ser uno de los destinos elegidos por miles de personas durante esta Semana Santa 2017. Y es que su Pasión Viviente es una de las más vibrantes a nivel estatal.

Este año, la representación tendrá lugar el Jueves Santo (13 de Abril) por la noche y el Viernes Santo (14 de Abril) en horario de mañana. Desde finales del siglo XIX, los vecinos de esta localidad, a tan solo 32 kilómetros de Bilbao, se vuelcan por completo en esta representación viviente de enorme realismo que se desarrolla en las mismas calles y plazas del pueblo, y en la que participan alrededor de 350 actores, en su mayor parte habitantes del municipio. Cada año, unas 50.000 personas se acercan a Balmaseda para presenciar la procesión de los pasos con los romanos y los penitentes cargando las cruces, la representación de la Última Cena, la captura de Jesús, el ahorcamiento de Judas, el juicio de Jesús ante Pilatos, la flagelación, el encuentro con la Virgen María y con María Magdalena, el Vía Crucis y la Crucifixión, momento en el que muchos de los presentes no pueden reprimir las lágrimas.

Every year, some 50,000 people come to Balmaseda to see the procession of the floats with the Romans and the penitents bearing the crosses, the re-enactment of the Last Supper, the capture of Jesus, the hanging of Judas, the trial of Jesus before Pilate, the flagellation, the encounter with the Virgin Mary and with Mary Magdalene, the Via Crucis and the Crucifixion, a moment when many of those present cannot hold back their tears.

UN FESTIVAL PARA DISFRUTAR Y PARTICIPAR DE LA CULTURA VASCA Durante las fiestas de la Semana Santa, del 12 al 16 de abril, vuelve a Bilbao Basque Fest, el festival de ocio de la cultura vasca. Un festival con vocación de contribuir a reforzar el liderazgo cultural de la ciudad a través de la música, el deporte, la cultura y la gastronomía, los cuatro puntales de una iniciativa dirigida a toda la ciudadanía de Bilbao y a sus muchos visitantes durante esta época del año.

En Basque Fest podrás disfrutar y participar de la cultura vasca, a través de la música, el deporte, la gastronomía, las tradiciones y el folklore. Reúne tradición, innovación, arte, vanguardia… y, con una programación para pasarlo bien.

Basque Fest es, cada año, un acontecimiento único, abierto e internacional, una cita con la cultura vasca en el sentido más amplio.

Basque Fest es, en definitiva, una forma universal de entender lo vasco.

Por un lado, aparece la siempre interesante programación musical de Basque Fest, que se 40

articula alrededor de varios tipos de oferta en los que se abarca lo que proviene de la raíz, del folklore, aunque con una mirada actual; y la música que recoge todos los estilos contemporáneos (indie, rock, pop, post-rock, electrónica…) representada por los grupos y artistas locales. Esta oferta se adecúa a la personalidad de sus espacios: la Plaza Nueva (el lugar perfecto para mostrar a todos los públicos las propuestas artísticas más novedosas de raíz folklórica), y el atrio de Azkuna Zentroa (un espacio abierto al que se acercan visitantes de un perfil más joven, con un interés cercano a la cultura contemporánea). En la programación de 2017 se recogen propuestas musicales emergentes y consolidadas en Euskal Herria, con capacidad de atracción y proyección exterior. Además, danzas y romerías cosechan siempre un gran éxito tanto entre el público local, los excursionistas de día y los visitantes.

A FESTIVAL TO ENJOY AND PARTICIPATE IN BASQUE CULTURE During the Holy Week celebrations, from 12 to 16 April, Basque Fest, the Basque cultural entertainment festival, is back in Bilbao. A festival that seeks to help reinforce the city’s cultural leadership though music, sports, culture and gastronomy, the four cornerstones of an initiative aimed at all of Bilbao’s citizens and at its many visitors during this time of the year.

At Basque Fest you can enjoy and participate in Basque culture through music, sports, gastronomy, traditions and folklore. It combines tradition, innovation, art, avant-garde... And with an agenda to have a good time.

Basque Fest is, every year, a unique event, open and international, a meeting with Basque culture in the broadest sense. Basque Fest is, in short, a universal way of understanding all the Basque things.

On the one hand, there is always the interesting music agenda of Basque Fest, organi-

sed around several types of offerings that cover from the roots, from folklore, though with a modern perspective, and music that includes all contemporary styles (indie, rock, post-rock, electronica...) performed by local bands and artists. This agenda is adapted to the personality of the locations: Plaza Nueva (the perfect place to show all types of audiences the newest artistic proposals with roots in folklore), and the atrium of Azkuna Zentroa (an open space that attracts a younger audience, with an interest more in line with contemporary culture).

The agenda for 2017 includes emerging and consolidated musical performances from the Basque Country, with the capacity to attract people and projection abroad. In addition, dances and romerías (pilgrimages) are always a big success among the local public, daytime excursionists and visitors.

Las tripulaciones compiten por el honor de dejar grabada su victoria en la bandeja de la Regata, siempre dentro del más estricto espíritu deportivo y universitario.

It was first held on 16 May 1981, and since then, the duel has taken place every year. It starts in Erandio to go up the Nervión River and the boats go past emblematic locations such as the Maritime Museum, the Euskalduna Conference Centre or the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum, to finish in front of the City Hall. The crews compete for the honour of engraving their victory on the Regatta’s platter, always with the strictest sporting and university spirit.

A cada paso que dan Maritxu y Diego por Bilbao descubren que hay espacios verdes por todas partes. En Amezola, Etxebarria, Santutxu, Deusto, Artxanda, Rekalde… Pero el Parque de Doña Casilda resulta especial, mágico, súper ¡Hasta puedes encontrar un monumento dedicado a un famoso clown! Se llamaba Tonetti y te saluda desde cerca del Museo de Bellas Artes. Porque ¡eh! el Museo y el Puente de Deusto se levantan en uno de los extremos del Parque y al otro están el Palacio Euskalduna y el puente del mismo nombre. Sí, el de Los Patos es un Parque muy céntrico. ¿Te hemos dicho ya que Maritxu y Diego le llaman “El Parque de los Patos”? Luego conocerás el motivo.

At every step that Maritxu and Diego take through Bilbao they discover green spaces everywhere. In Amezola, Etxebarria, Santutxu, Deusto, Artxanda, Rekalde… But Doña Casilda Park is special, magical, superb. You can even find a monument dedicated to a famous clown! The Museum and Deusto Bridge are located at one end of the Park and at the other end we have the Euskalduna Congress Centre and the bridge of the same name. Yes, the Park of the Ducks is a very centrally-located park. Did we already tell you that Maritxu and Diego call it “The Park of the Ducks”? You’ll find out why later.

The Park is a hundred years old. It is a kind of living and fun catalogue of tree species. Many even visibly display their identity card. Impressive magnolias, birch trees, privets, maple trees, beeches, lime trees, yew trees, palm trees and many more. They are enormous. They live in the park, providing shelter for robins, sparrows, starlings and even the odd kestrel.

No busques barcas. Pero verás especies distintas de ánades (patos) nadando o contoneándose por las orillas. Si tienes suerte, con sus pollitos. Y cisnes. Y pavos reales. Si no te mueves, podrás observar las ardillas rojas. Supone todo un espectáculo que va cambiando con la época del año, a medida que muda la vegetación y los propios pájaros. Escúchalos, arman una verdadera algarabía. ¿Ya sabes porque las gentes de aquí lo llaman “El Parque de Los Patos” a pesar de que doña Casilda Iturrizar donara los terrenos hace casi 150 años?

At the lowest part of the Park, where the gardens end their descent, a pond sparkles with its Dovecote, its Gardener’s House, its small bridges, its fountain.

It’s not big. Don’t look for boats. But you will see different species of ducks, swimming or waddling along the shore. And if you’re lucky, with their ducklings. And swans. And peacocks. If you keep still, you can see the red squirrels. It’s a spectacle that gradually changes with the seasons, as the vegetation and the birds themselves change. Listen to them, they make quite a racket. Do you now know why people here call it “The Park of the Ducks”, despite the fact that Ms Casilda Iturrizar donated the land almost 150 years ago?

En la parte alta del Parque destaca una enorme pérgola que se suele usar para conciertos al aire libre. ¡Y hay canchas de baloncesto para jugar! ¡Y un bidegorri para ir en bici! Te encuentras fuentes por todas partes. En la más grande de todas se levanta un gran monumento a Doña Casilda. Y en otra muy grande conocida como la fuente cibernética, con muchos chorros, a veces realizan espectáculos de surtidores, luz y música. Al anochecer impresionan mucho a Maritxu y Diego.

Pero lo mejor de todo es corretear por los senderos que suben, bajan y se bifurcan por el Parque.

Investigar las especies de árboles imaginando que estás en África o Asia. Espiar a los pavos reales mientras abren y cierran su enorme cola de colores.

Y soñar con países lejanos y fantásticos. O correr con el monopatín por el bidegorri.

Cuando se cansan, Maritxu y Diego beben agua en cualquiera de las fuentes. Y se sientan junto al Museo de Bellas Artes. ¡Al otro lado esconde otro estanque con una gran musa dorada en el centro!

Bilbao es increíble.

At the largest one there is a big monument dedicated to Doña Casilda. And at another large one known as the cybernetic fountain, with many water jets, there are sometimes light, music and water jet shows. Maritxu and Diego are very impressed by them in the evenings.

But the best of all is to run along the paths that go up, down and branch off through the Park. Investigating the tree species imagining that you’re in Africa or Asia. Spying on the peacocks while they open and close their enormous colourful tails. And dreaming of faraway and fantastic countries. Or skating along the bicycle path.

When they’re tired, Maritxu and Diego drink water from any of the fountains. And they sit beside the Museum of Fine Arts. At the other side there is a pond with a large golden muse in the middle. Bilbao is incredible.

Las villas nobles a sus pies ocultan palacios y secretos, las cumbres en lo alto encierran la grandeza de esta tierra, el anhelo de libertad de su pueblo, la hospitalidad de sus valles.

Desde Bilbao, en dirección a Donostia/San Sebastián, por la AP-8 llegamos a Durango, una localidad en un entorno natural de gran belleza y lleno de posibilidades para amantes de las actividades al aire libre. En su núcleo urbano podréis descubrir elementos y edificios emblemáticos como la Cruz de Kurutziaga, la Basílica de Santa María de Uribarri, los palacios señoriales, un recorrido sobre los restos que dejó el bombardeo que sufrió la localidad en 1937 y el “Espacio para la Memoria”, monumento erigido como recuerdo del terrible suceso. La Feria del Libro y del Disco Vasco de Durango, que se celebra en diciembre, es la feria cultural más importante de Euskadi.

Si os apasionan los entornos verdes os proponemos una visita al Parque Natural de Urkiola. THE DURANGUESADO REGION The godess Mari inhabits the raw rock. She roams through hom oak forests, protects and banishes. Urkiola is magic, pagan and Christian rituals, the last refuge for creatures created by the fears of the Basque people. The noble villages at its foothills hide palaces and secrets, the mountaintops embody the greatness of this land, the yearning for freedom of its people, the hospitality of its valleys.

Travelling from Bilbao, in the direction of Donostia/San Sebastián on the AP-8, we reach Durango, a town in extremely beautiful surroundings and full of possibilities for those who love outdoor activities. In the town itself you can find emblematic elements and buildings such as the Kurutziaga cross, the Santa María de Uribarri Basilica, the stately palaces, a route along the remains left by the bombing the town suffered in 1937 and the “Space for Memory”, a monument installed as a memorial of that terrible event. The Durango Basque Book and Album Fair, held in December, is the Basque Country’s most important cultural fair.

If you are passionate about green surroundings we propose a visit to the Urkiola Nature Park. From Durango, and taking the BI-623 road, you can see the extraordinary landscapes offered by this Nature Park, where you can find mountain ranges and large limestone crags, deep ravines and valleys, intricate forests and gentle meadows...

Basílica de Santa María de Uribarri / The Basilica of Santa María of Uribarri.

Se puede practicar además montañismo, escalada, rappel o senderismo. En el alto de este Parque Natural, en una ladera, está el Santuario de los Santos Antonios (Abad y de Padua). Rodeado de fresnos, abedules y hayas, su historia está ligada a los orígenes del Cristianismo. Frente al Santuario hay una piedra que, según la creencia popular, es un meteorito y tiene virtudes especiales: para encontrar pronto un marido, las mozas en edad casadera no tenían más que dar vueltas a su alrededor. Hoy en día también funciona para los mozos. El conjunto se completa con varias hospederías, refugios y restaurantes.

Tras volver a Durango, nos encaminamos hacia Elorrio por la BI-636, pero podemos hacer un alto en el camino en Atxondo si nos apetece un tranquilo paseo ideal para un plan familiar, aprovechando el antiguo recorrido del tren Durango-Arrazola. La Vía Verde de Arrazola, escondida entre las imponentes paredes de piedra del Anboto, es un camino totalmente llano de 10 km, ida y vuelta, que se realiza en dos horas. El recorrido también se puede hacer en coche tomando la BI-4332, una carretera paralela.

Podemos disfrutar así de la Bizkaia más verde y rural.

Desde aquí hay otra visita recomendable, la subida a Betsaide. En El Tope, punto final de la Vía 54

Verde de Arrazola, dejamos el coche, y tras una hora de suave ascenso por una pista señalizada alcanzamos la cima, donde encontraremos inigualables vistas y nos relajaremos en el silencio de la montaña. Es el lugar exacto donde se unen los tres territorios de Euskadi: Araba, Gipuzkoa y Bizkaia. Un monumento recuerda este hito geográfico.

Volvemos a nuestro punto de partida en Apatamonasterio (Axpe Atxondo) y retomamos la carretera, primero por la N-634 y luego por la N-636 hasta llegar a Elorrio. Esta localidad destaca por el alto valor de su patrimonio histórico: palacios y casas solariegas de contundente piedra y sillería labrada, el Monasterio de Santa Ana, la Basílica de la Purísima Concepción, la Puerta de Don Tello, el Palacio del Marqués de Tola y los restos de la muralla medieval. A las afueras de Elorrio, nos podemos acercar por la BI-3321 a la necrópolis de Argiñeta, uno de los monumentos funerarios más importantes de Euskadi construido en la Alta Edad Media.

Para volver a la capital de Bizkaia, desandaremos el camino hasta Elorrio por la N-636 hasta Durango, y finalmente, por la AP-8 hasta Bilbao.

You can also go mountaineering, rock climbing, abseiling or trekking. At the top of this Nature Park, on a slope, is the Sanctuary of Santos Antonios (Abad and Padua). Surrounded by ash, birch and beech trees, its history is linked to the origins of Christianity. Opposite the Sanctuary there is a stone that, according to popular belief, is a meteorite and has special virtues: to quickly find a husband, women of marriageable age just have to walk in circles around it. Today it also works for men. It is completed with several inns, refuges and restaurants.

After returning to Durango, we head towards Elorrio on the BI-636 road, but we can stop on the way in Atxondo if we feel like taking a relaxed walk ideal for families, using the route where the DurangoArrazola rail track used to be. The Green Route of Arrazola, hidden among the impressive rock walls of the Anboto mountain, is a completely flat path 10 km in length that can be completed in two hours. The route can also be followed by car, taking the BI-4332 road which runs parallel to it. We can thus enjoy the more rural and green Biscay.

From here there is another recommended visit, the climb to Betsaide. At El Tope, the final point of

the Green Route of Arrazola, we leave the car, and after an hour of gently climbing a signposted path we reach the summit, where we can find unparalleled views and relax with the silence of the mountains. It is the exact place where the Basque Country’s three regions meet: Araba, Gipuzkoa and Biscay. A monument indicates this geographical boundary marker.

We return to our starting point in Apatamonasterio (Axpe Atxondo) and retake the road, first the N-634 and then the N-636 until we reach Elorrio.

This town stands out due to the high value of its historical heritage: palaces and ancestral houses built in cut stone, the Monastery of Santa Ana, the Purísima Concepción Basilica, the Don Tello Gate, the Marqués de Tola Palace and the remains of the medieval wall. On the outskirts of Elorrio, driving up the BI-3321 we can go to the Argiñeta necropolis, one of the Basque Country’s most important funerary monuments built in the Early Middle Ages.

To return to Biscay’s capital, we undo the path until Elorrio along the N-636 to Durango, and finally, we take the AP-8 to Bilbao.

AINHOA ARTETA La soprano Ainhoa Arteta Legorraburu (Tolosa, 1964) nos responde desde Sydney. Pero podría estar ensayando en Nueva York o Londres. La suya es una de las voces más reconocidas del panorama operístico internacional. La cantante guipuzcoana domina un repertorio amplísimo y cuenta con una discografía extraordinaria.

Arteta, entre otros muchos galardones, ha ganado la Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes, la distinción Lan Onari, otorgada por el Gobierno Vasco o el premio Hispanic Society of America por su Contribución a las Artes.

Y le encanta Bilbao.

- ¿Cuándo actuó en Bilbao por primera vez y qué recuerda especialmente?

El año no recuerdo bien pero seguro que fue cantando la ópera “La Cenerentola” en el antiguo Coliseo Albia.

- ¿Había visitado la ciudad antes de esa primera actuación?

Sí, por supuesto. Hay una parte muy grande de mi ADN que es vizcaíno, concretamente de Ispaster, por lo que estoy muy vinculada a la ciudad. Ade56

Lo digo con la boca bien grande: ¡Te adoro Bilbao!

- Ha terminado su actuación en Bilbao, sale usted con unos vaqueros y unas gafas oscuras. ¿A dónde va?

Pues sí, salgo por Bilbao cuando he terminado una actuación. Y quedo con mis amigas Matxalen y Nekane. Con un vaquero y sin gafas de sol.

- ¿El Casco Viejo o el Nuevo Bilbao?

Pues la verdad es que me gusta andar por todas las zonas. Cada una tiene su encanto.

- Un lugar para comer o tomar algo.

En Bilbao se come muy bien y siempre me gusta visitar el Bascook o el Serantes. Y el Amaya cuando actúo en el Arriaga.

- ¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de Bilbao?

Lo que más gusta es su gente: abierta, simpática.

- ¿Hay canto para bilbaínos?

Los bilbaínos siempre dicen que todas las óperas se hicieron en Bilbao antes que en ningún sitio, así que, si no hay ópera para bilbaínos, ellos se la inventan (risas).

AINHOA ARTETA Soprano Ainhoa Arteta Legorraburu (Tolosa, 1964) answers from Sydney. But she could be rehearsing in New York or London. Hers is one of the most recognised voices in the international opera scene. This singer from Gipuzkoa (Basque Country) a very wide repertoire and has an extraordinary discography.

Arteta, among many other awards, has received the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, the Lan Onari distinction, awarded by the Basque Government or the Hispanic Society of America award for her contribution to the arts.

And she loves Bilbao.

- When was the first time you performed in Bilbao and what do you remember in particular?

I can’t remember the year but I’m sure it was singing the “La Cenerentola” opera at the old Albia Coliseum.

- Had you visited the city before that first performance?

Yes, of course. A significant part of my DNA is from Biscay, specifically from Ispaster, so I feel a very strong link to the city. In addition, my best friend since the age of 3 is from Bilbao. I say it out loud: I love you, Bilbao!

- Your performance in Bilbao is over, you go out in a pair of jeans and some sunglasses. Where do you go?

Yes, I do actually go out around Bilbao after a performance. I meet my friends Matxalen and Nekane.

- The Old Quarter or the new Bilbao?

To be honest I like both areas. They each have their own charm.

- Somewhere to eat or have a drink.

In Bilbao the food is very good and I always like to visit the Bascook or the Serantes. And the Amaya when I perform at the Arriaga.

- What do you like the most about Bilbao?

What I like the most are its people: open, friendly.

- Is there an opera for the citizens of Bilbao?

People from Bilbao always say that all operas were made in Bilbao before anywhere else, so if there isn’t an opera for them, they’ll invent it (laughs).
