This issue of Homer is special for a few different reasons. First, we welcome the new RGT Chief Executive, Lisa Morris-Tomkins, to our RGT family. She is besotted with greyhounds and has many exciting ideas for the RGT, so this 40th year is really just the beginning of our journey! I must also thank Jilly Cooper, award-winning author, who is a greyhound aficionado. She penned a piece for Homer in memory of her dear greyhound Feather, whom she recently lost. Her passion for the breed is evident through her words, and her tribute really touched me...I hope it moves you as well. Thank you to everyone who has treated their pets to the RGT’s food ‘Pet Greyhound’. Not only are we confident that it is a great food choice for your beloved pet (not just greyhounds, it is great for all medium-large breeds), you are helping us care for the 1,000 hounds in our care with every bag you buy. For each bag you purchase we get a £1 donation, so as you treat your greyhound, you are also buying meals for the hounds in kennels waiting for their homes. It’s win-win for the hounds.

This is an extra special edition of Homer, as the RGT celebrates its 40th birthday. That’s forty amazing years finding top notch homes for greyhounds, and we could not have done it without your help! During this time 70,000 greyhounds have been homed. If you’ve ever adopted a hound, supported the RGT at an event or shared your love of the breed with a friend, you are part of this success and we thank you!

R e m e m b e r Th i s ? How ’s this for a bit of RGT Memorabilia? Seeing as the RGT is celebrating a bir thday, we decided it might be interesting to see where Homer Magazine began. In 1992 we published a four-page newsletter called ‘RGT Scene’. This was long before we had the Shop, the ‘In Memor y ’ or the ‘Greyhound Galler y ’ pages. We’ve come a long way and hope you’ve enjoyed the journey with us.

THE RGT TURNS 40 In June 1975, a small committee of individuals with one common interest came together to chase after a joint goal: finding homes for greyhounds when they have finished racing on Britain’s tracks. These devoted greyhound fans got the ball rolling, and before long greyhounds were starting to find their way into family homes. It was no easy task as, in 1975, greyhounds weren’t necessarily considered an ideal pet, but these greyhoundhoming-pioneers knew better. They started to share their passion of the breed with the public and slowly but surely the message was heard. This year the Retired Greyhound Trust is celebrating a milestone, as it turns 40. In just 40 years the RGT has found more than 70,000 homes for greyhounds. Over the past decade the RGT has grown exponentially, and today there are more than 70 branches that span from the Isle of Skye to Jersey. There are currently more than 1,000 volunteers that work regularly with the 1,000 hounds in their care. Almost 4,000 hounds are scooped up into loving homes every year but

while greyhounds can be found in every corner of the UK, our work is far from over. Today the RGT is chasing innovative ways to find homes for greyhounds in different countries such as France and the Czech Republic. As more opportunities are explored greyhounds will undoubtedly find their way into more places around the globe. It won’t take long until everyone finds out what the RGT has been saying for the past 40 years.... Greyhounds Make Great Pets.

So here’s to 40 fabulous years and to 40 more. One day we will meet our goal and every ex-racing greyhound will have a sofa to call their own in a loving home. Thank you for taking this journey with us.

While there are many exciting events being held this year, the pinnacle will be the RGT’s Ruby Ball.

The Ball will be hosted by Gyles Brandreth, and the post-dinner musicians are ‘The Rat Pack is Back’, so make sure you bring your dancing shoes.

Best of all, the proceeds from the evening will go towards the care of

NEWS

The RGT Appoints a New Chief Executive Earlier this year the RGT appointed a new Chief Executive, Lisa MorrisTomkins, to lead the charity’s activities. Commenting on the appointment, RGT Chairman Dr Andrew Higgins said: "I am greatly looking forward to welcoming Lisa to the Trust. She beat a strong pool of applicants to land the role and her passion for animal welfare generally and greyhounds in particular, combined with her strong and relevant experience, really shone through.

leadership, the Trust will continue to find homes for thousands of greyhounds each year and strengthen its position as one of the country's leading welfare and homing organisations." Lisa’s experience includes Interim Chief Executive of Greyhound Rescue West of England and many other senior positions within the charity sector, including Director of Operations for the Southern Region at the RSPCA. In that role she not only supported and developed a large network of RSPCA branches to deliver animal welfare services to their communities, but also managed a network of homing centres and veterinary hospitals and was involved in external and public affairs and fundraising.

Julie Collier Awarded for Services to Greyhounds Dedicated RGT supporter Julie Collier has been awarded the George Ford Award for Services to Retired Greyhounds. This award recognises outstanding achievements that support ex-racing greyhound homing and has been awarded to supporters and volunteers of the Retired Greyhound Trust since 1999.

Lisa said: "I feel privileged to be joining the Retired Greyhound Trust and all of the special people that work, volunteer and support the Trust in their tireless work to home greyhounds when they retire from their racing careers. "I am looking forward to working closely with the Trustees, staff and the Branch network to further the reach of RGT, ensure more people recognise us, support us and experience our wonderful work. Lisa Morris-Tomkins

"Importantly, Lisa has experience not only of working with staff and volunteers across large branch networks but also of fundraising, financial management and external affairs. "I have no doubt that under Lisa's

"I am delighted to bring my professional experience, my passion for animal welfare and my love for these amazing dogs to RGT in its very special 40th Anniversary year." Lisa replaced Peter Laurie who left to take up the position of Director of Operations at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Dr Andrew Higgins presents the Award to Julie Collier for her services to greyhounds

Dr Andrew Higgins, RGT Chairman, presented the George Ford Award to Julie. He said: “Julie has truly made an outstanding contribution to the welfare of retired racing greyhounds in the last twelve months. In 2014 she organised Fall for Hounds, the largest fundraising event in the history of the Retired Greyhound Trust, and one that exceeded all expectations. It was tremendous to see so many people come together from all across the country to support our cause and raise more than £100,000. “I am pleased to present the George Ford Award for Services to Retired Greyhounds to Julie, an amazing woman and Honorary Friend of RGT who, quite literally, got it off the ground and made it all happen.” Julie Collier said: “”I’m so proud to have won this award. It really is for everyone who was involved in Fall for Hounds. “Bringing home my ex-racer Roxy was the best thing I’ve ever done. I want to do everything that I can to help both raise money for the greyhounds that are in the care of the RGT after their racing careers and to help raise the public’s awareness about what amazing pets they are.

A New Home for Maisie

Greyhounds at the Opera New Trustees

The RGT always works hard to give as many greyhounds as possible the best chance at life as a pet.

A new production of the opera Rigoletto brought a new twist to the stage: greyhounds were part of the cast and were included onstage during a pivotal scene in the performance.

Last November BBC Panorama produced a programme in which a greyhound trainer allegedly drugged one of the greyhounds in his care. After the show aired, the RGT worked with the Greyhound Board of Great Britain to safely bring in the greyhound highlighted, a small black female. One of the RGT’s London branches took care of the hound and began to prepare her for life as a pet. An RGT Volunteer said: “She’s a lovely little girl who was really no problem at all.

Several of the Trust’s branches participated in this production by Ellen Kent. Rigoletto was written by Giuseppe Verdi and is based on a play by Victor Hugo, author of Les Miserables. Award-winning opera director and producer Ellen Kent said: “To be able to promote animal welfare and preservation of endangered species through the drama and spectacle of my operas is a great joy and privilege for me.”

Steve Goody, the Deputy Chief Executive of leading animal welfare charity The Blue Cross, joined the RGT in January 2015 as a Trustee. Steve is also the Vice Chairman of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes and has been a member of the RGT Veterinary Committee for a number of years. Another new Trustee that has been appointed is RGT volunteer Jayne Conway. She has been supporting the RGT’s Portsmouth branch for many years and has been raising funds through the sales of her gourmet dog treat line Demontfort Delights.

“We named her Maisie and made sure she was given a proper look over at the vets. We saw to it that she was vaccinated, neutered and had dental treatments, which we do for all of the greyhounds in our care. “Within a few weeks of being in our care she was deemed ready for a home and it didn’t take long for her to catch the eye of one of the branch’s supporters. She went to her new home and all seems to be well. “We’re happy that we were able to help prepare her for her next journey: a life on a sofa. Seeing them through the whole homing process is one of the most satisfying parts of working with greyhounds. “

500 Greyhounds for Cornwall RGT The Cornwall RGT branch has hit a milestone and homed its 500th greyhound. The 500th greyhound was homed to Martin and Sue Woollatt from Troon. Martin said: “We’ve had smaller dogs before but never anything as large as a greyhound. I’ve always heard that they make great pets so we attended an open day at the sanctuary a few months ago.” The Cornwall branch operates out of Russet Greyhound Sanctuary, based near Camborne. At any point in time they have between 20-25 hounds looking for a new home. Martin continued: “We met several

Greyhounds were some of the stars that appeared onstage during a tour of Ellen Kent’s Rigoletto

dogs and decided to adopt our first greyhound, a small black female named Crystal. She settled quickly and we knew that we wanted to get her a friend for company. “When we returned to the sanctuary we found out that the first dog we walked at the open day, a strapping large fawn male named Harrison, was still looking for a home. Harrison and Crystal got on perfectly, so the decision was made for us. “We had no idea that Harrison was the 500th dog that the Sanctuary had homed, but we are thrilled to be involved. Hopefully other individuals looking to adopt a pet will consider a greyhound, because they are fantastic and there are so many that are looking for homes.”

Daren Takes on the London Marathon

fundraising total over £100,000, so please dig deep and donate to my JustGiving page!”

Dedicated greyhound lover Daren Johnson will be taking on the Virgin Money London Marathon this April to raise much-needed funds for the Trust.

To donate, please visit: https://www. justgiving.com/Daren-Johnson/ or text RGTD24 £10 (or the amount of your choice) to 70070.

Daren is one of the Trust’s biggest supporters and has already raised £83,000 through his “Give a Bit Back” fundraising events, which have included a running and cycling event from John O’Groats to Land’s End and golf days at the prestigious London Club.

He said: “I’m proud to be representing the Retired Greyhound Trust in the London Marathon and have been training hard for the last few months. Greyhounds are such great dogs and really deserve to enjoy their retirements in loving homes, and I’m always looking for new ways to fundraise for the RGT so that they can help as many greyhounds as possible. I’d love to take my “Give a Bit Back”

Lewis Race, who is only 12 years old, has dedicated himself to raising funds for the Hollin Hall RGT branch. To date this inspirational young man has personally raised more than £4,000 for greyhounds. Amazing work, Lewis!

Supporter Peter Lowe very kindly donated his £500 long service award from 25 years at Barclays bank to the branch. Last but not least, the entire branch (more than 100 volunteers) got together and held a week of coffee mornings to raise funds for Macmillan. Congratulations to everyone who took part.

Commenting on the donation, CVS CEO Simon Innes said: "This year's fundraising has been particularly successful and the range of events run by our staff shows ever higher levels of creativity with cakes a particular theme.

"The RGT does fantastic work and we're delighted to help them with this significant donation."

Lewis’ Fundraising

The Monmore RGT branch in Wolverhampton has had several highlights over the past few months. Supporter Matthew Nicholls participated in Fall for Hounds and raised a fantastic £2954.

CVS, a group that owns veterinary clinics across the country, presented a cheque for £15,000 to the RGT following a year of fundraising among its practices across the UK.

“We perhaps have Mary Berry to thank for the fact that a number of practices organised their own Bake Offs and our support office took this one step further by organising themed baking weeks.

By running the London Marathon, Daren hopes to reach his total fundraising target of £100,000.

Support from CVS

Samuel Zelmer-Jackson, the RGT’s Media & PR Manager, said: “We are so grateful to the many dedicated professionals in CVS practices for their hard work and dedication to greyhounds last year. “They came up with some really exciting and unique ways to support the RGT and raised an impressive sum that will make a huge difference in the lives of many greyhounds.”

For Georgie Recently Vic and Val Stanway lost their beloved hound Georgie to bone cancer. She was a Pets As Therapy dog who regularly visited the local hospice, and she is greatly missed by many people, especially by Vic and Val’s grandson Harry. Harry wanted to do something in Georgie's memory, so he decided to raise money for the RGT by climbing Snowdon in Wales.

Allison Waggot (Hollin Hall RGT) and Lewis Race

Henderson’s Relish

He proudly made it to the top and back (with his Mum and Dad of course) and he has raised £60 for the RGT.

The Sheffield RGT branch has found a new way to raise funds for the hounds in their care: they have been selling bottles of Henderson’s Relish.

Peter Lowe donated his Long Service Award to Wolverhampton RGT branch

The bottles feature unique artwork with greyhounds and not only does this help promote the breed, all of the proceeds directly help the hounds at Sheffield RGT. What a delicious way to fundraise!

Harry and Georgie enjoyed many days in the sun together.

Capgemini’s Support The kind people at Capgemini are helping our Greyhoundhomer RGT branch in Essex find more homes for greyhounds. Pictured below is Ian Horrocks, who presented a £500 cheque to RGT Volunteer Pat Philpot for the CapGemini Community Awards.

Mac’s New Job A new career has recently begun for Mac, a black greyhound homed by West Yorkshire RGT. Having settled in really well with his new family he was assessed and accepted by Pets As Therapy and now makes weekly visits to the stroke rehabilitation unit at his local hospital. He is a very welcome helper and is greeted by the patients and the staff alike.

Cheers to our Volunteers Volunteers are the pulse of the RGT and we simply would not be able to operate without their generosity and support. We asked two dedicated volunteers why they devote their time to rehoming greyhounds. “I’ve had greyhounds for 40 years and been involved off and on with the RGT for most of that time. Today the RGT is a much more organised and well known charity. The RGT’s work results in greyhounds being increasingly accepted and known as wonderful pets and companions. ” Barbara Elsworth Pelaw Grange branch “The most rewarding part of finding homes for retired greyhounds is seeing one go to its new home and getting feedback from the new owners. I love the photographs they send of the dog enjoying the comforts of their new home.” Jenny Hebborn Oxford branch Our branches are always looking for volunteers of all kinds with different skills to help find homes for greyhounds. Whether you can walk some of the dogs, help out around the kennels, take the dogs to shows and events, fundraise in your area, or even help promote the RGT and the fantastic pets that greyhounds make, please get in touch. To make the difference to thousands of greyhounds by volunteering, please contact your local branch by visiting: www.retiredgreyhounds.co.uk/Branch-Locations/

Uno Saves the Day One amazing greyhound, homed through the RGT’s Hollin Hall branch, has become a local hero after saving his entire family from a house fire. Uno, a five-year-old retired greyhound, was adopted by a family in County Durham and quickly settled into life in a home. One night a fire started in the kitchen, but was contained to the freezer, so the family wasn’t instantly alerted to the danger. Uno awoke Clare Whiteford and her three sons with his uncommon barking. The family noticed the flames and ran from the house. The fire brigade informed the family that if it hadn’t been for Uno, they would have quickly been overcome by smoke and might not have made it to safety in time. Uno became a local celebrity overnight, with local media outlets telling his story of bravery. Not only did he win an award for his heroic act, he has also become an ambassador for greyhounds and other rescue dogs.

“The smoke alarm wasn’t going off and I couldn’t smell the fire as it was confined to the freezer. I thought that he might want to go outside so I went downstairs but he wouldn’t follow me. He was standing outside my sons’ bedroom door and barking and really distressed.” -Clare Whiteford, Uno’s Owner

HOMING ACROSS EUROPE The RGT has been stretching its edges to help find homes for greyhounds that have retired from racing. Over the past few years the RGT has been working with a homing organisation in France called Levriers en Detresse (LED). This organisation works from a small rural town south of Paris and matches greyhounds with their perfect family. The RGT’s Croftview branch in Kent works closely with LED to identify greyhounds that meet the needs of families in France and every few

home for a quick visit to measure its suitability. Homes that are deemed appropriate for a hound are compiled on a list to await the next scheduled arrival of greyhounds from the RGT. The arrival of the hounds is really celebrated at the Czech homing centre, as many families who have adopted hounds in the past arrive, with their pets, to welcome the UK dogs. Dozens of excited families wait for the RGT van to arrive, making a day of socialising, eating and talking about their love of greyhounds. After the adoption paperwork is signed, the hounds are introduced to their new families, and the next chapter of their lives.

RGT Croftview’s Cheryl Miller delivering greyhounds to France for homing

months an RGT driver and volunteer will personally deliver a selection of hounds to France so they can go to their new homes.

Jo Blake, RGT Operations Manager, said: “Working with homing programmes in different parts of Europe helps us not only find more homes for the greyhounds in our care, it also allows us to share our knowledge with other like-minded individuals and learn from their experiences. It is a good experience for all parties involved, which is key as we are all working towards the same goals.

An emotional adoption in the Czech Republic, as this greyhound meets his new family

“From our experiences, the welfare and operational standards really mirror those that we uphold, so we are confident that these greyhounds are going to good homes where they will be cherished. To find out more about homing in France visit: www.levriers-en-detresse.org. To find out more about homing in the Czech Republic visit: www.adopcechrtuforum.cz.

The RGT does what it can to help French families care for their dogs and have even provided a translation of the rehoming booklet to give the new owners all the hints and tips they need. The RGT’s homing to mainland Europe doesn’t end in France. The Trust is also working to place greyhounds into loving homes in the Czech Republic. Adopce Chrtů, which is an organisation based 60 km north of Prague, has been finding homes for hounds for the past five years and works with various organisations around the continent to bring loyal hounds to the people of the Czech Republic. They operate similarly to the RGT, with individuals expressing an interest in providing a home for a hound. To ensure it is an appropriate home, one of a team of volunteers will visit the

EVENTS RGT Shines at Crufts

Every year the RGT attends Crufts, one of the world’s largest dog shows. This annual event, organised by the Kennel Club and located at Birmingham’s NEC, has been held since 1886. Crufts draws around 160,000 visitors, and is watched by millions of people on television. According to the Kennel Club, Crufts is not just one of the world’s largest dog shows, it “celebrates every aspect of the role that dogs play in our lives.” This year the RGT had stands in four different locations across the NEC, which were run by the RGT’s Head Office staff as well

as volunteers from the Hall Green, Wolverhampton, Perry Barr and Rugby & Coventry RGT branches. TV presenter Clare Balding visited the RGT stand and interviewed Hall Green volunteer Tracey Parbery. The discussion, which was shown on Channel 4, focussed on the great pets that greyhounds make and tried to dispel the many myths about this noble breed. Samuel Zelmer-Jackson, RGT’s Press & Media Manager said: “We had fantastic responses from the public, amazing interaction with the media and instant, tangible homing successes. There is no doubt that dozens of retired hounds will be adopted into new homes as a direct result of Crufts.”

VETERINARY CORNER Frances Allen is a small animal veterinary surgeon working in Durham, with a particular interest in and considerable experience of working with greyhounds. She is also a Trustee of the Retired Greyhound Trust and Chairs its Veterinary Committee which develops and oversees the implementation of RGT veterinary policies. This column is for educational purposes. You should always contact your veterinary surgeon if you have any concerns about the health of your greyhound.

OSTEOARTHRITIS (OA) OR DEGENERATIVE JOINT DISEASE (DJD) Noninfectious Osteoarthritis is the commonest form of joint disease in the ageing dog. The disease is progressive and causes few noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Thankfully there are many ways to reduce the pain and suffering this disease can cause. Signs that your pet may be suffering in silence include: avoiding once enjoyable activities, limping, difficulty rising, stiffness, decreased activity level, reluctance to play, run or climb stairs, as well as behavioural changes such as grumpiness, depression, withdrawal or even aggression.

diet and weight management. Obesity makes arthritis hard to manage because it increases the stress on joints.

Acupuncture, massage, stretching and exercise all help in maintaining joint mobility and muscle mass/tone which assist in keeping our stiff and sore oldies living as comfortably as possible for as long as possible.

• Putting non-skid runners over slippery wood or linoleum floors.

Moderate exercise can help make your dog more comfortable by strengthening muscles, keeping ligaments flexible, warding off obesity and improving circulation to stiff joints. After a minute or two of warming up, many arthritic dogs move more easily and with less pain.

Many greyhounds can suffer with joint disease

The joints most commonly affected are wrists, hocks, shoulders, stifles and the spine, and I quite frequently diagnose arthritis of the metacarpal or tarsal and phalangeal toe joints. Greyhounds also seem predisposed to pain in the lumbar area, which can make it difficult to rise or even sit and often leads to marked muscle loss from the hind limbs.

12

Long term management and treatment of arthritis aims to relieve pain, improve joint function, slow the progress of the disease and, if possible, stimulate the body’s ability to repair affected joints and currently relies on oral antiinflammatory medications (not all of which can be tolerated by our canine friends) and/or the administration of chondroprotective agents to promote healthy cartilage repair. There are numerous supplements such as fish oil, glucosamine, chondroitin, green lipped mussel extract, Boswellia, Vit C, MSM (to name but a few) which can be added to the diet or may even be included in some diets to enable maximum joint function for as long as possible. These natural products generally have fewer side effects and their use can sometimes reduce the amount of the prescribed medications required.

If your dog is reluctant to move at first because of aching joints, provide an incentive such as a favourite toy or treat to get them on their feet. Make the exercise as much fun as possible by giving lots of petting and affection before and after, and perhaps a healthy treat afterward. Your dog will benefit from a healthy

If your hound suffers from arthritis, try not to get discouraged. Arthritis may change your life with your dog, but it doesn’t mean that life is over. As you care for your arthritic dog, you may find your special bond with them increasing. The once energetic, playful friendship should eventually be replaced with the joy of a gentle, caring life together. You can help your arthritic hound by: • Keeping food and water dishes at a comfortable height and on a non-slip surface • Providing your hound with a padded surface to cushion their joints while they sit and sleep

• Where possible, providing ramps to help them navigate stairs etc. • Blocking stairs with a gate to ensure your hound doesn’t try to climb and injure themselves. • Using a homemade sling to help steady your hound (particularly useful when your dog is trying to rise, climb stairs or get into a vehicle) • Keeping your hound in a warm and draught-free environment • Grooming your hound regularly, as there may be spots they can no longer reach due to stiffness. Do not try to medicate your dog’s arthritis on your own as many human anti-inflammatories can be dangerous for dogs, particularly Ibuprofen. You must never give this drug to your greyhound.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE Leave Your Legacy to Help Us Be There for Greyhounds For Another Forty Years Can you give greyhounds the gift of a bright future? Greyhounds are our passion, and we’re proud to have helped over 70,000 of these beautiful dogs since 1975. However, with 8,000 greyhounds retiring from racing each year, there are many more that need our help and we want to be there for greyhounds for another forty years and beyond. Welfare is at the heart of all that we do but the costs of caring for our hounds and promoting them as great pets really do add up, and it is thanks only to the generosity of supporters like you that we are able to continue our vital work. Leaving a legacy to RGT is one of the best ways you can help retired greyhounds; legacies are a vital part of our income and accounted for approximately 25% of our total income in 2014. As an example of how significant this sum is, it is the equivalent of all of our vet bills for a

whole year! Your legacy will help us to secure a bright future for generations of greyhounds to come, and any gift in a Will – no matter what size - will make a real difference and we are very grateful for every single one. To find out more about how your legacy will help or to have an informal chat, please call us on 0208 335 3016 or email legacies@retiredgreyhounds. co.uk. We’ve teamed up with Essex-based firm of licensed conveyancers PCS Legal who have kindly offered to donate 20% of their fee for matters relating to residential conveyancing, Commercial Conveyancing or Will writing to the RGT for the remainder of this year if you quote “RGTRuby”. To find out more about this initiative, please visit www.pcsconveyancing. com or call their Basildon office on 0845 505 8888/ 01268 590003 or Ongar office on 0845 505 7777/01277 363633

“I have been involved with the Trust since it was established in 1975, running the charity’s Waltham Abbey branch. I am proud to be a Legator; the RGT simply couldn’t continue their wonderful work homing so many of these fantastic dogs if it weren’t for the generosity of people like you – so please consider becoming a legacy pledger today and show your support for retired greyhounds nationwide.” Johanna Beumer MBE has been involved in the homing of greyhounds for over 50 years and has volunteered for the Retired Greyhound Trust since the beginning.

MY GREYHOUND... Remembering Feather

For eight years, I have had the bliss of owning a black, Irish, ex-racing Greyhound. Feather was found in County Offaly, in the middle of winter, a tottering skeleton, whom his rescuer reckoned, had been in the same muzzle for three weeks. Despite such cruelty, he bore no grudge against humans. Having several cats, I was initially nervous of giving him a home. Then his same rescuer sent me a photograph captioned: “A quiet little man with a soul,” and I was lost. Arriving in England, Feather settled in immediately, captivating everyone who came to the house with the same sweet, toothy grin. He was particularly magical with young children and old people, never pulling on the lead, or jumping up, sliding past one like a skein of silk. There was also his overwhelming beauty, as can be seen in this portrait painted by my friend, Ros Berryman. He was most beautiful perhaps when he ran, hurtling ten laps round garden or field to the noisy ecstasy of my

grandchildren, or going berserk in the long russet grass in the twilight of summer evenings. Feather did have naughty moments – subscribing – like all Greyhounds, to the divine right of sofa or double bed. How often would I usher guests into the drawing room to find he had scattered cushions all over the floor and ripped off some throw concealing a gushing fountain of horsehair. But for a writer, he was ideal, providing hours and hours of silent companionship while I worked. Since he died, Bluebell, our second black rescued Greyhound, misses him dreadfully, but tries so hard to cheer me up. It is a sorrow and a complete mystery that rescue kennels are crowded out with black Greyhounds, when to me they are the most grounded and lovely natured of the breed. Once you’ve had black, you never go back.

Feather painted by Ros Berryman Feather is buried in the pet cemetery at the bottom of the garden, alongside numerous cats, mongrels, Labradors, a lurcher, a gerbil and a fox cub, known only to God. On his headstone are the words: “In loving memory of Feather, whose noble heart only failed because he gave so much of it away.” -Jilly Cooper, Author

ART & POETRY CORNER In Memory of Farloe Poppy

Max the greyhound drawn by Chloe

The moment that you died my heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache the other died with you. I often lie awake at night, when the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, with tears upon my cheeks. Remembering you is easy, i do it every day, but missing you is heartache that never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart and there you will remain, until the joyous day arrives, that we will meet again. I will love you forever Poppy. Your heartbroken Mammy xxxxx

Greyhoundbob by Paula Trower

Greyhound Wisdom “Humans call it a kitchen worktop, I call it the allyou-can-eat buffet” “When the humans are out it’s time to take advantage of the comfy double bed!” “I’ve got my sofa, I’ve got my blankets, I’ve got my pillows. Slave, tuck me in!” “You do not need an alarm clock I will always bark to let you know I’m awake” “Why eat dog food when roast chicken, sausages and scrambled eggs are on the menu?” “I’m a bit cold so that means I get to snuggle in your dressing gown.” “Rain? I’m not walking in that! I’m a fair weather walker don’t you know“ “Yes, yes, I’m a lap dog” These pieces of greyhound wisdom were shared on our Facebook page. Every month we have fun, interactive contests with dog owners like you. Want to get involved in the conversation? Join us at facebook.com/rgtrust

Ash loves it and the improvement is noticeable in the health and coat. The vet says she is immaculate - a lot to do with this food.” (Michael) “I am a former Military man and an army marches on its stomach. In this case it is our retired greyhound Millie. She is that trooper. When we got her she was just getting over a life threatening illness and in pretty poor condition. After 15 months and a change of diet she is now bright-eyed cold-nosed and full of fun and a totally different dog from the one we took from the kennels. This is mostly due your greyhound dog food.” (Ben)
