HIS is the month that dreams are made of. The fruition of our hopes and hard work with the promise of a brisk holiday business at our markets. THE good news during the holiday season is that no matter what shape the economy is there will always be business to be done at the holidays. While a robust holiday season may not compensate for a lack lustre year, let us be thankful we have that! FOR the latter part of this year we have seen the economy more friend than foe for many of our small businesses. Shoppers have been regaining confidence which has been equating to more sales at our businesses. If you are invested in the stock market with a retirement account you have been able to breathe a sigh of relief as there has been decent stability and it’s expected to continue. THIS is the time of year vendors look forward to the most. There is something about December that excites even the most seasoned merchant. It’s like betting on yourself in a horse race. You know you will finish but not quite sure how large the payoff will be. TRUE, we in retailing are somewhat jaded by jingle bells and one-horse open sleighs. After all, we prepare for the season during the summer. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around we have about as much holiday spirit as Scrooge himself! YET, even the most humbug merchant melts a little when the tarp opens for the last selling day of the season, Christmas eve. That night, after hearing dozens of customers complain about having to spend money on Aunt Martha or Uncle Ed, the merchant closes up shop and heads home. Another Christmas blitz has ended and exhaustion has set in after weeks of retail havoc. WE know that our family and friends are at home waiting to welcome us, although their holiday festivities started hours earlier. RETAILERS make a lot of personal sacrifices this time of year. There are no office parties, no bonuses from the boss (for the self employed) and little time to spend with loved ones. STILL, after all is said and done, the quiet triumph that rides home with a merchant on Christmas eve is unsurpassed. The joy of the season is finally felt. The amount of money in our pockets is a direct result of the hard work and savvy we each have. AT this special time of year we are proud to stand with our readers and advertisers and say Happy Holidays to all!
