Cier B.

Public Relations

Your story is one thing, communicating it is our thing!

DIY PR What do you do when you don’t have a budget for public relations? You do it yourself, of course!

r.a.m. presents -The ART of Communication

What Is Your Company’s Message for 2014? We interrupt this programming to bring you the following message… It’s a new year, the perfect time to implement a fresh start! As a business owner, by now you should have already decided upon your company goals? But more importantly, have you shaped your company’s key messages?

What are Key Messages? Well-defined, concise, and memorable thoughts aligned with company goals and objectives Basic, short, and understandable points that are effective when delivering to the public Structured, strategic, and consistent distribution of information to ensure overall company achievement Simply put, key messages are expressions utilized to express who you are, what you do, and why you exist as a company!

How to Develop Your Company’s Message. In developing your company message, it is critical you define the purpose of your message. You must also be mindful of your audience and the intent of your message. Do you want your message to inform, incite, or call to action? Your message should aim to highlight your company uniqueness and the benefits of doing business with you. Of course your message must support your mission.

Craft Messages to Motivate! 1. 2. 3. 4.

What do you want people to know about your company? What do you want your audience to say about your company? How does your message relate to your audience? How does your message reflect your brand?

When crafting your message, make it believable and consider some personal experiences to make it relatable. Be sure to consider questions as to why your audience should care and why they should act. A key message is a strong statement about an organization’s belief about itself. It can also be a strong statement about a particular issue. With any company message, ensure the entire company is speaking in ‘one voice’. We sidetracked to bring in the New Year, but the second most popular request was to answer questions surrounding social media. Stay tuned, that’s in our next issue!

The

Celebration

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Xhosa pronunciation: [xoˈliːɬaɬa manˈdeːla]; 18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was South Africa's first black chief executive, and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalized racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997. Internationally, Mandela was Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999. A Xhosa born to the Thembu royal family, Mandela attended the Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand, where he studied law. Living in Johannesburg, he became involved in anti-colonial politics, joining the ANC and becoming a founding member of its Youth League. After the South African National Party came to power in 1948, he rose to prominence in the ANC's 1952 Defiance Campaign, was appointed superintendent of the organization’s Transvaal chapter and presided over the 1955 Congress of the People. Working as a lawyer, he was repeatedly arrested for seditious activities and, with the ANC leadership, was unsuccessfully prosecuted in the Treason Trial from 1956 to 1961. Influenced by Marxism, he secretly joined the South African Communist Party (SACP) and sat on its Central Committee. Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the SACP he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961, leading sabotage campaign against the apartheid government. In 1962, he was arrested, convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the state, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial. ::: Xhosa is the official language of South Africa. 9

JAN-FEB 2014 ResponsibleARTistry.com Issue V

Mandela served over 27 years in prison, initially on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. An international campaign lobbied for his release. He was released in 1990, during a time of escalating civil strife. Mandela joined negotiations with President F. W. de Klerk to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994, in which he led the ANC to victory and became South Africa's first black president. He published his autobiography in 1995. During his tenure in the Government of National Unity he invited several other political parties to join the cabinet. As agreed to during the negotiations to end apartheid in South Africa, he promulgated a new constitution. He also created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses.

While continuing the former government's liberal economic policy, his administration also introduced measures to encourage land reform, combat poverty, and expand healthcare services. Internationally, he acted as mediator between Libya and the United Kingdom in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing trial, and oversaw military intervention in Lesotho. He declined to run for a second term, and was succeeded by his deputy, Thabo Mbeki. Mandela became an elder statesman, focusing on charitable work in combating poverty and HIV/AIDS through the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Mandela was a controversial figure for much of his life. Denounced as a communist terrorist by critics\ he nevertheless gained international acclaim for his activism, having received more than 250 honors, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize, the US Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Soviet Order of Lenin and the Bharat Ratna. He is held in deep respect within South Africa, where he is often referred to by his Xhosa clan name, Madiba, or as Tata ("Father"); he is often described as "the father of the nation". 10

JAN-FEB 2014 ResponsibleARTistry.com Issue V

Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in the village of Mvezo in Umtata, then a part of South Africa's Cape Province. Given the forename Rolihlahla, a Xhosa term colloquially meaning "troublemaker", in later years he became known by his clan name, Madiba. His matrilineal great-grandfather, Ngubengcuka, was ruler of the Thembu people in the Transkeian Territories of South Africa's modern Eastern Cape province. One of this king's sons, named Mandela, became Nelson's grandfather and the source of his surname. Because Mandela was only the king's child by a wife of the Ixhiba clan, a so-called "Left-Hand House", the descendants of his cadet branch of the royal family were morganatic, ineligible to inherit the throne but recognized as hereditary royal councilors’. His father, Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa, was a local chief and councilor to the monarch; he had been appointed to the position in 1915, after his predecessor was accused of corruption by a governing white magistrate. In 1926, Gadla, too, was sacked for corruption, but Nelson was told that he had lost his job for standing up to the magistrate's unreasonable demands. A devotee of the god Qamata Gadla was a polygamist, having four wives, four sons and nine daughters, who lived in different villages. Nelson's mother was Gadla's third wife, Nosekeni Fanny, who was daughter of Nkedama of the Right Hand House and a member of the amaMpemvu clan of Xhosa.

Few could doubt the Nelson Mandela political achievements. Mandela is a man who stood firm and took his country from the extremes of apartheid through to democracy. For this he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1993). He has achieved more than this though. Nelson Mandela has received more than 250 awards that are in every way honorable. Keys to cities, and honorary degrees are among them, along with the peace prize. In any Nelson Mandela interview you will find him to be a man of humor, honesty and humility. These are great attributes in any man, but Mandela can be considered among the greats. One of those greats was Gandhi. Perhaps people can see something similar in Nelson Mandela and Gandhi. Mandela paid tribute to Gandhi with these words: "He dared to exhort nonviolence in a time when the violence of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had exploded on us; he exhorted morality when science, technology and the capitalist order had made it redundant; he replaced self-interest with group interest without minimizing the importance of self. India is Gandhi's country of birth; South Africa his country of adoption" They were like-minded men. Nelson Mandela, Obama – there is a mutual respect there of that there is no doubt. Barack Obama sent a videoed message to Mandela on his 91st birthday in which he displays the utmost respect to Nelson Mandela and his life's achievements. Possibly not that it means that much to the Mandiba himself but yes there is a Nelson Mandela statue – in fact more than one. There is one in Nelson Mandela Square (formerly Santon Square) in Johannesburg, and one in Parliament Square, London. There are also streets, and bridges named in his honor, and postage stamps. The Nelson Mandela stadium in Port Elizabeths, South Africa seats 46,500 and has been built in anticipation of the 2010 FIFA world cup. The Nelson Mandela museum is situated near his home of Qunu. Mandela has insisted that this museum should not be a tribute to just his own life, but to the cause he stood for and to uplift and develop the local community. The Nelson Mandela Children's fund supports children in South Africa with the aim to change the way society treats its children and youth. The Nelson Mandela Foundation is a huge organization with the aim to promote a just society built on Mandela's vision and work. Along with many peace and educational activities Mandela has been prominent and outspoken in the effort against AIDS. His son died from AIDS and it is often referred to as 'the curse of Africa'. 12

JAN-FEB 2014 ResponsibleARTistry.com Issue V

For Nelson Mandela AIDS is another war, another impossibility that can still be won. Since 2003 Mandela has supported the 46664 concerts to support HIV/AIDS victims and research. Apart from the initial 1988 concert when Mandela was still in prison, the birthday concerts have all been run by 46664. With all the awards and honorary degrees and accolades, the Nelson Mandela achievements have been many, certainly more than most men would achieve in a life time. From a young boy, schooled for royalty, to political activist, to prisoner, to President, to honored scholar and statesman Nelson Rolihlahla has done so much for the world and will go down as one of histories greatest men. It is little wonder that July 18 (his birthday) has been named as 'Mandela Day'. His contribution to the world has been great indeed.

Fashion Designer. Guerilla Gardner. Collector.

Join Ron as he embarks on his next project: igniting a (horti)cultural revolution! Ron envisions a world where gardening is gangsta, where cool kids know their nutrition and where communities embrace the act of growing, knowing and sharing the best of the earth’s fresh-grown food. Ron is realizing his vision for community gardening and rejuvenation. Let’s grow this seed of urban guerilla gardening into a school of nourishment and change. Help spread his dream of edible gardens, one city at a time. It’s time for Americans to learn to transform food deserts to food forests. Help them learn to regenerate their lands into creative business models. Let’s make Ron’s philosophy mushroom across the country, and the world. In part of this effort, Ron is planning to build an urban garden in South Central LA that will serve as an example of a well-balanced, fruit-and-veggie oasis – called “HQ.” Inspired by the idea of turning unused space such as parkways and vacant lots into fruitful endeavors, this garden and gathering place will be a community hub, where people learn about nutrition and join together to plant, work and unwind. HQ will create a myriad of jobs for local residents, and this plot of land will be a self-sufficient ecosystem of gardening, education, cooking, business learning and management. The community will get their hands dirty together, shovel together, work together and be healthy together. For more info visit www.RonFinley.com 16

On July 1st, 2013 Nolan released a free LP in partnership with DJBooth.net entitled “Distinction”. He launched the #DistinguishYourself Campaign to precede the project. It is a personal motto and motivational tool for his supporters while achieving their own goals. Promotional tracks were released under his initiative. Most recently, J.Nolan and producer Reese Jones have joined as The Humble Legends. They have an honorary 3rd member by the name of Jae Franklin who will also be heavily featured on the group’s debut LP “Keep It Cordial”. They’re preparing a 2014 release.

@RealJNolan

J. Nolan is a 24 year old Hip-Hop artist from Atlanta, GA by way of New Haven, CT. These two locations have created quite a dichotomy in his music and personality, which he describes as “east coast fluidity, southern sensibility.” As a young man striving for excellence, Nolan has built a solid reputation for his technically sound wordplay and potent imagery about his environment. Listeners frequently compare his style to the likes of Nas, Raekwon, and Talib Kweli. Many have gotten to witness his relentless flow in freestyle ciphers and live performances throughout the southeastern United States. Since coming onto the scene in 2008, his music has gained recognition from great producers such as 9th Wonder, Nottz and Don Cannon. During this time he’s also participated in music campaigns for brands such as Quiksilver and Supercuts while additionally contributing to German record label, Yosoy Music’s album “The Compilation” which was released in partnership with Urban Outfitters. Determined to not only be a rapper, he is also co-founder of the Manifest Movement, where he’s already released 3 full LP’s (Broken Dreams, Chaos Theory and Distinction) as well as the Archetype. The imprints roster consists of himself, Yung B Da Producer (rapper/producer), and Tuelv (producer from Poland). He plans to eventually grow into a full media conglomerate offering opportunities for creative people in need of an outlet. The backbone of their business resides in their Christian faith although their ART is identified as Secular. This has led to Nolan participating in Good Will Projects such as concerts for organizations such as Toys for Tots, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital along with donating his song “Cosmic Cruise” to an album highlighting the dangers of drunk driving. 21
