East Providence Heritage Festival 2009

29th Heritage Festival

Twenty-nine years and counting. This event has succeeded in continually bringing enjoyment to East Providence by presenting fun activities and entertainment. The Heritage Festival is a 3-day outdoor food and music festival now in its 29th year. This year’s dates are July 17, 18 and 19. Heritage Festival prides itself on showcasing the arts in a family oriented enviornment. Over the past 28 years it has presented hundreds of artists in all genres of the performing arts. Both our community and our state have been enriched by the festival’s cross-cultural platform. This event provides a wonderful opportunity for all age groups to celebrate our own musical heritage as well as to experience in an atmosphere of camaraderie the music, cuisine and artistry of other lands thereby gaining a greater understanding of the common threads that unite us. Mark Fanelli’s Traveling Amusement Park, has become a festival fixture and will bring many rides, games and specialty food booths to the baseball field. This year there is a mixture of old and new vendors, from merchandise to information, as well as many food vendors who have become regulars at the Heritage Fest. As enjoyable as the Stadium shows are, many attending just visit the booths, field tent shows and amusements and spend the day meeting old friends and browsing. Festival number 29 should be among the best of these events, with a new mixture of entertainment, arts and crafts, amusements and food. East Providence Heritage Days, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) public charity. Funding provided in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, through an appropriation by the Rhode Island General Assembly, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and private funders.

Tavares (also known as The Tavares Brothers) is a successful American R&B, disco, funk and soul music band, composed of five Cape Verdean-American brothers from New Bedford, Massachusetts. The brothers -- Arthur Tavares, Ralph Vierra Tavares, Perry Lee Tavares, Antone Tavares, and Feliciano Tavares nicknamed “Pooch,” “Tiny,” “Chubby,” and “Butch” -- started the group in 1964 as Chubby and the Turnpikes in New Bedford, MA. Their grandparents taught them traditional Cape Verde folk songs, while their older brother John schooled them on “doo wop” singing. In 1969, the group became Tavares. They began singing in New England clubs and were signed to Capitol Records in 1973. The five-brother singing group Tavares may be best known for such up-tempo hits as the million-selling single “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel,” “More Than a Woman,” and “Whodunit,” but they first came to national attention with the luscious ballad “Check It Out.” Their crisp vocalizing and clean-cut, young-mennext-door image made them favorites on TV shows starring Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, and Dick Free Shuttle Clark’s American Bandstand. In Service 1974, Tavares also had the first hit version (number one R&B) of “She’s Gone” written by the then relative unknown duo of Daryl Hall and John Oates. Hall & Oates scored a number seven pop hit with the song in 1976.

1975 turned out to be their most successful year chart-wise, chalking up a Top 40 Pop album (In the City) and their biggest hit, the Top 10 Pop/#1 R&B smash “It Only Takes a Minute”, which was later successfully covered by Jonathan King, Take That and recently sampled by Jennifer Lopez. They parlayed this success into a spot as an opening act for the Jackson 5. Tavares’ album Sky High (spring 1976) was the group’s first collaboration with producer Freddie Perren. Perren seemed to have an affinity for family singing groups, having had hits with the Jackson 5. Sky High boasted the sparkling number three R&B hit “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel (Part 1)” from summer 1976. Their fifth LP, Love Storm was issued in spring 1977 and included the clever number one R&B hit “Whodunit” in spring 1977.

Many of their hits, however, underlayed their R&B background and gave the group the image of being a disco act. This perception was reinforced by their appearance on the soundtrack to the film Saturday Night Fever in 1977. Tavares recorded the Bee Gees track “More Than a Woman,” and their version reached the Pop Top 40 that year. The soundtrack became one of the most successful in history, giving Tavares their only Grammy. “More Than a Woman” was specifically written for Tavares by the Bee Gees and was issued as a single from the 11-million-selling Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. “More Than a Woman” was also on their Future Bound LP released in spring 1978. A greatest hits set, The Best of Tavares, was released in fall 1977. In 1984, Ralph Tavares stepped down from the group, and Tiny left in the mid 1990s, but the other three brothers continue to tour. In 1994, Canadian label Unidisc released The Best of Tavares Revisited, which had re-recordings by the group of their past hits.

FOREVER YOUNG A Tribute to the Music of Neil Young Performing Friday, July 17th 7:30pm & 9:30pm Performing the best of Neil Young’s ACOUSTIC & ELECTRIC songs!

Serving the Rhode Island & Massachusetts communities of East Providence, Barrington, Seekonk and Rehoboth

Conceived after Mark Cutler, John Fuzek and Dan Lilley performed the Neil Young classic “Powderfinger” as a group set closer for a RI Songwriters Association show at Stone Soup Coffeehouse in Pawtucket, RI, “Forever Young” is a group of performers that pay tribute to the songs of Neil Young. In addition to Cutler, Fuzek and Lilley, Forever Young original members also include Becky Chace and Pete Vendettuoli. John Amitrano and Phil Hicks were added to the band in December of 2007 to give the show a “Crazy Horse” kind of feel. All of the musicians performing as part of “Forever Young” are staples of the Rhode Island music scene and veterans national touring acts. In addition, they are all fans and have been influenced by the music of Neil Young. Drawing on the 40+ year career of Neil Young; the show highlights many of Young’s popular songs and a few of the more obscure numbers. The show is presented with the full seven -piece band doing both ACOUSTIC and ELECTRIC SETS. The show is reminiscent of the “Four Way Street” live album recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and of Neil Young with his many back-up bands. The band is the 2008 Motif Music Award Winners for Best Cover/ Tribute Band and the 2009 Motif Award Nominee.

East Providence Heritage Festival 2009

Festival runs 6-11pm on Friday, July 17. FOREVER YOUNG, A Tribute to the Music of Neil Young will perform two shows: 7:30pm & 9:30pm. The band was voted best tribute band for 2008 by Motif Magazine. Field Stage. Cost: $5.00

Morris dancing from the Cotswolds in southwest England was traditionally done during the springtime to awaken the sleeping earth from its winter slumber. In the Welsh border area, Morris dancing traditionally happened around Christmas time and the dancers would raise a substantial amount of extra money by passing a hat. In many cases, this made the difference between a good Christmas and a poor one.

integrity. Equally skilled and comfortable with music styles ranging from r&b/jazz, to funk, dance, Motown and disco, this band definitely gets the job done! Their unique blending of styles is exciting enough - but it is their performance, their delivery, their attitude, that sets them apart as the “premiere” r&b/jazz band around! So, whether you like to sit and tap your feet, watch a show, or dance the night away, THIS IS the band for you! Gina lived in California for many years where she began writing original songs. She also joined and formed several bands there, and became a well-known entertainer in the Sacramento area. Gina is an extremely talented and energetic performer. Onstage she is described as “…sexy, gutsy, and funky!” She literally lights up the stage with her brilliance. Her voice is phenomenal - beautifully melodic, soulful, and pure. She is fun to watch and she loves to entertain. And, her enthusiasm and “party” spirit are contagious. Tall, graceful, and elegant, she is the ultimate adornment to any stage. In October of 2007 Gina was a finalist on Amateur Night At The Apollo, at the “World Famous Apollo Theatre”, in New York City.

Raks Sharki, also called belly dance, is a form of dance that many are familiar with. But few understand the effects it has on the human body. HERITAGE FESTIVAL PURPOSE East Providence Heritage Days, Inc., founded in 1981 is a 501(c) (3) public charity under IRS regulations. The Kelly School of Irish Dance Performing at 4:00pm on Sunday, July 19th The Kelly School of Irish Dance is not a traditional, competitive Irish dance school. They continue to be first and foremost a performance-based school, offering noncompetitive dance training. With that said, friendly, and fair competition, in moderation, is an excellent way for dancers to broaden their Irish Dance experience, and measure their progress in Irish dance. Meghan Kelly is the director and primary choreographer & instructor for The Kelly School of Irish Dance. Meghan began her training and her love of Irish Dance in 1990 with The Goulding School. In 2006, at the age of 22, Meghan founded The Kelly School. Since then, she has taught Irish dance to her dancers as well as countless students in elementary schools, girl scout troops, and dance schools throughout the state. She is a former Champion Irish dancer and graduate of Rhode Island College. Meghan absolutely loves sharing her love of Irish dance with all her terrific dancers. Food, Food and More Food at The Festival Bring your appetites to Pierce Field for the Heritage Festival, because the menu of available food is terrific. If you are a festival “veteran,” you probably already have a good idea of the vendors you’ll visit – although likely you’ll make sure you’ve checked out all the new ones this year. You can be sure of one thing; the festival has quality vendors, many of whom have been returning for years. You’ll find traditional fair and festival treats, as well as many ethnic foods to be enjoyed. A picnic area will be set up on the baseball field so you can take time out to sit down, be cool under the umbrella, and bring your sandwich or fries to enjoy. Most of the vendors will be open late all three nights so you can have a snack or late supper. They’ll package stuff so you can bring it from the field to the stadium to enjoy during the Saturday and Sunday night shows, too. There will be a beer and wine tent on the baseball field and stands set up for beer and wine and soft drinks in the Stadium. As usual, there will be a good variety of food booths to select from, both for sandwiches and plates, as well as great snack food from popcorn and ice cream to a cup of coffee and a doughboy. Enjoy!

The doughboys are delicious!

THE MACHINE

performs PINK FLOYD

“The Machine duplicates the sound and hits of Pink Floyd with chilling accuracy.” - Matt Diehl, Rolling Stone Magazine THE MACHINE, America’s top Pink Floyd show, has forged a 20 year reputation of excellence, extending the legacy of Pink Floyd, while creating another legacy all their own. Over the years, The Machine has touched the hearts and souls of many, selling out large clubs and theatres across North and Central America, Europe and Asia. They have also appeared at renowned music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Riverbend, and Germany’s Rock of Ages. The New York based band focuses on making every show an authentic Floydian experience for their fans. Known for performing a diverse mix of The Floyd’s extensive 16-album repertoire (complete with faithful renditions of well known hits as well as obscure gems), The Machine’s stellar musicianship, dramatic lighting and video, and their passionate delivery sets them above and beyond the rest. The band is also known for recreating entire albums as a part of their show, accepting requests from fans, and for taking an A to Z approach in which one song is played for every letter of the alphabet. Additionally, the quartet has been sharing the stage with full symphony orchestras, enhancing and expanding the sonic depth of Pink Floyd.

For the past few years the Friends of the Ponham Rock Light have been working hard to restore the small lighthouse that stands in the Providence River off the coast of Riverside. The light, formally an U.S. Coast Guard installation is a historic structure that members of the group are raising funds to use to restore the building and grounds. The organization will have an information booth at the festival again this year, selling mugs, caps and T-shirts with the Lighthouse on them as a fund raising project. The committee has been very successful in attracting grant funding for the project will he pleased to discuss their progress and goals and share photos of the Light with those stopping by the booth during the event.

The idea of starting an acoustic act came about in 2006 and Fred, Eric, Lenny and Joe were joined by Brad Randall of North Kingston on RI 401-434-7744 MA 505-336-7979 Pursuit of Excellence bass and formed Band of Brothers National Funeral Directors Association in Eric’s living room. They chose that name because of the close re-

lationships they all had formed with each other over the years. They played many small parties, local coffee shops and small club venues for a year before adding Ed Rashed from Cranston RI on keyboards. The band took off, going from a small acoustic setting to a fully electrified six piece act. At the height of the band’s popularity, Brad Randall was tragically taken away from them on Memorial Day, 2008 due to a motorcycle accident. The band was devastated and cancelled multiple shows that year and was not sure of the bands future until they agreed that the band should move forward. They added Eric Leffingwell from Bristol RI to take up the bass for them and within a short time the band was back in business and opened up for Loverboy at the 2008 East Providence Heritage Festival. The band was very well received that night and their schedule filled quickly. They are currently booked throughout 2009 and its fan base continues to grow. The band prides itself in its musical work and also contributing their time to many charities and local benefits. If you haven’t seen this band, attend one of their shows, you won’t be disappointed.

Band of Brothers will perform on Sunday, July 19 at 7:00 PM at Pierce Stadium Stadium opens at 6:15 pm
