East Providence – Calls to local residents in March for the eighteenth annual Dollars for Scholars Phone-a-thon were successful in raising funds for Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation (CSF) of East Providence. The first $40,000 received was matched by the Carter Family Charitable Trust. The total amount of $83,148 received to date will be awarded as scholarships in June to East Providence students. New scholarships were established through the phone-a-thon, including the following: the King Family, Leonard Cipolla and the Stephen Martin Family Scholarships. New book awards include those named for Frank Vollaro, James and Kathleen Lynch, John Rizzini Family, Judith Vargas, Kollett Family, Meredith Watson, Nelia and Joseph Silva, P. Christopher Ellis, Morse Family, Tripp Family, William and Patricia Lambert, William and Norma Conley and Paul Lasnier Family. Teachers and students from East Providence schools volunteered at the phone-athon. Past recipients of scholarships from Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of East Providence and their parents joined in making calls to fellow classmates, as did board members of CSF of East Providence. Phone-a-thon Chairman Louise Paiva thanked local residents for their generosity. The local volunteer scholarship organization has conducted a phone-a-thon each spring since 1995. The amount of scholarships that has been awarded from phone-a-thon contributions totals more than half a million dollars. “We applaud East Providence residents for their continuing support of higher education for East Providence students,” she said. “We appreciate the continuing support of Nordson EFD, an East Providence company,” she added. The phone-a-thon is held at their Catamore Boulevard facility and the company provides phone access, postage and refreshments for volunteers.

I Am Here for You

For the last two years I have advocated for the children and families of East Providence as your School Committee Member from Riverside. I am proud of the work that I have done, the programs I’ve helped to create and the ideas that I have brought to the table. I have suggested over 30 new ideas to generate revenue and reduce costs to the City and Schools. I am thrilled to report that 18 of those ideas so far have been implemented or are in the process of being implemented by the budget commission. In addition to those ideas, I have tirelessly advocated for full day Kindergarten, Middle School Sports, better funding for our aging school buildings and new technology for our children. There is still much work to be done. On June 25, 2012, I drove to City Hall and filed my intent to run for City Council in Ward 4, Riverside. I have chosen to run for Council this year so that I can not only continue to advocate for our Schools but the entire City. I intend to represent Ward 4, Riverside with a strong, independent voice and continue to maintain the level of energy and public service that I have brought to the School Committee. Riverside is a proud community with deep roots and many families that have been here for generations. We have miles of waterfront, great public parks, the carousel and lots of small businesses. We’re almost a city within ourselves. Riverside deserves a Council Member who will listen to the concerns of the people and work diligently to make improvements. We need someone who is an independent thinker but can still work with the rest of the council to get things done. As a resident of East Providence for over 40 years and almost half of those years spent right here in Riverside, I feel I am the person for the job. As the liaison to the City Council, I worked closely with Mayor Rogers to consolidate City and School Departments like IT and Maintenance. Lots of past politicians have talked about it but we got it done. Those consolidations are working well and saving the City tens of thousands of dollars. We need more of this. I am up to the task of being your Council Member from Riverside. I will be asking for your support in the coming months and asking for your vote in November. Everyone in Riverside should feel free to call me with your concerns and ideas for improving our community. I’m ready to listen and ready to act on your behalf. Don’t be shy. Just call me… Chrissy (401) 481-1721

Candidate For Ward I City Council City Of East Providence

James Briden is a candidate for the Ward I City Council seat in East Providence. Mr. Briden is a partner in the law firm of Blais Cunningham & Crowe Chester, LLP. He served as East Providence’s City Solicitor from 2008 to 2010. James Briden’s highest priority will be to keep property taxes down. In Rumford, Mr. Briden has emerged as a community leader working closely with others in opposition to the expansion of TLA Pond View. His efforts have included strongly advocating for our community, speaking at City Council meetings, serving as a liaison between the City and Rumford residents, writing letters, and working closely with the Toxic Action Committee and the East Providence Coalition. Jim Briden, as our Ward I City Councilman, will bring strong and experienced leadership. His expertise on the Pond View case is crucial; where the outcome will have a very significant impact on our quality of life in Rumford.

July 2012 The Reporter This is a very challenging time for East Providence which must now, in a sense, reinvent itself in order to achieve fiscal sustainability. This is no easy task and requires one to know when to disagree on certain issues while maintaining an ability to work collaboratively on other matters. Jim has lived with his family in Rumford since January of 2000. Mr. Briden attended The Gordon School in East Providence, graduated from Moses Brown, received a B.A. in Economics from Boston College and his law degree from the University of Arizona.

Richard “Spunk” Pimentel Seeks School Board Political Newcomer Announces for Ward Three By Bob Rodericks

Pimentel said that he believes that the city has a “good chance to climb out of this financial mess” with the help of the state budget commission and a “better way of doing city business”. “Let’s finally get city and schools working as one. I will do all I can do to keep this school committee from ever returning to negative politics,” Pimentel said. “We need to keep our school buildings in better shape and listen more seriously when parents ask questions. I have attended civic

meetings on my own through the years and I try to stay informed. Pimentel said that he recently approached the city Ward Three Democratic Committee and after a round of questions, he has accepted their endorsement. “Always have been a Democrat and I’ll look forward to their campaign help. One cannot run for office in a vacuum today. I have the time and the desire and I am willing to help out by seeking elective office,” continued Pimentel.

Richard "Spunk" Pimentel Richard “Spunk” Pimentel has announced his candidacy for the Ward Three school committee seat currently being held by first term incumbent Ryan Tellier. Pimentel told the Reporter that he likes Tellier but doesn’t think Tellier will seek re-election. “Except for 8 years, I have lived my entire life in East Providence and I have been urged by many neighbors and others to get involved,” the 72 year old Pimentel said in a recent interview. Pimentel lives with his wife, Linda, on Dover Avenue in the city’s Kent Heights section. “My two children are grown and both graduated from East Providence High, one in 1997 and the other in 2000,” he said. “I graduated from East Providence in 1958 and our feelings for this city are strong,” said Pimentel. Pimentel is retired and has worked as a school custodian for 10 years. “I started out as a custodian and became a high school supervisor and eventual supervisor of all schools. I know many of the issues. I was once in the union and then later on the management side. The system has changed, it has evolved and we must embrace the change for the good. I fully support the city’s effort to consolidate services and I like the current setup with one maintenance director for both city and schools. It’s working,” said Pimentel. He also said he would support other efforts at city consolidation. Pimentel also worked for the Coca-Cola company for 14 years and previously owned a popular small restaurant in the city. Although new to politics, he is known to many EP residents by his nickname, ‘Spunk’. “Yeah, everyone knows me as ‘Spunk’ or ‘Spunky’ but I tell people to remember to look on the ballot for my real name, Richard,” he laughs.

APNA PUNJAB “The Spice is Right!” By Gina Wesley-Silva

Tucked away within the beautiful country roads and peaceful surroundings of Rehoboth, MA, Apna Punjab Indian Restaurant is a rare treat for the pallet. Upon entering the restaurant, one is pleasantly greeted by an intoxicating ambiance, mostly due to the aroma of exotic spices and the distinct smell of charcoal grilling. The wait staff is friendly, attentive, and ever so willing to describe and explain each marvelously delicious dish. Yet, all of these wonderful first impressions of Apna Punjab Restaurant pale considerably

when one tastes the food! Talk about mouth wateringly delicious!! We started with some fabulous appetizers, such as the shrimp with hot garlic sauce, (the batter is to die for), and vegetarian samosas, which are potato dumplings. I then moved on to a tomato garlic soup, which was heavenly. Then, my daughter and I rounded out our meals with rice with cumin seed, carrots, an outstanding homemade cheese dish called paneer, and I even tried the chargrilled lamb, which was tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned and marinated. My daughter is a strict vegetarian and I am a not so strict vegetarian. I love lamb and wanted to try it here and I was not disappointed in the least! We were also impressed with how our waiter took his time discerning our preferences and suggested the perfect meal for both of us! That alone, is a talent worth mentioning! Everything was so incredibly delicious that my only disappointment was that I could not eat more! We had more than stuffed ourselves, and commented that we wish we had another stomach so that we could stuff that one too! Normally, neither one of us over indulge, but Apna Punjab made it impossible not to. And, the portions were so large that we still had plenty to bring home. That was real cool! Manager Jatinder Vij, who is affectionately known as “Jay”, says Apna Punjab is Dr. Lisa Daft and Dr. Jared Stubbs a family oriented restaurant, and that their food reflects “…the true tastes of India!” He Are pleased to announce Dr. Chris Vanderpool explained that he and his partners, Execuhas joined our family and cosmetic dental practice. tive Chef Subash Singh and Chef Ramon Jot Singh, are absolutely passionate about Providing comprehensive dental care in their cooking. Previously, they had two Seekonk, MA for more than 35 years. restaurants in Boston, which were very successful. Apna Punjab has only been open We welcome new patients! for eight months, but already it seems likely it will also be a huge success. I asked Jay about his claim that the restaurant features “true” Indian cooking, and he replied, “The secret is in the spices and the passion is in the cooking!” I cannot say enough about this great restaurant. The prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is comfortable for casual through fancy attires. There is also a room for private parties and events, which features a large dance floor and private bar. It seems the perfect restaurant for any occasion. Jay says he always encourages people to give Apna Punjab a try because he guarantees you will not be disappointed, and after eating here, I have to agree! Fred’s

By Bruce Rogers

SERVICE CENTER • INC.

As we approach the start of another sure to be active campaign season, I would like to share some thoughts and advice with my fellow candidates. I have been involved in many different campaigns and many elections since the late 1960’s and although each has its own goals and each takes on a personality of its own - there are some basic and fundamental ideals we should all strive to obtain. We all have the desire and charge to serve the people to whom we choose to represent. We must never forget or stray from this goal. Sometimes, we as candidates have the tendency to let our personal feelings and egos get in the way of achieving what we initially set out to do, which is to serve the people of East Providence. Although we may not always agree on certain issues or the means by which to reach this goal, we should always have respect for each other and therefore project the attitude of nothing but respect for the residents of our City. I have never known a candidate to announce for office for any purpose, other than to represent, help, assist, work for and with the people of whom they wish to serve, especially at the local level. Sometimes these same candidates end up being baited or prodded to move in another direction - personal attacks, name calling, accusatory statements against their opponents and blatant hurtful statements against others in order to advance their position upward in their respective campaigns. No one benefits from this exchange, especially not the people of our great City. The voters within our City limits also have a duty. They have the duty and right to ask questions, get answers and to go out and vote for the candidates which they feel will best serve East Providence and who have some of the same ideals and goals as the person making the choice. You, the citizens, also have the ability to set the tone and climate of the upcoming election by showing your support for honest open campaigning and respect for all the candidates whether you agree with them or not as all have agreed to serve you on a mostly voluntary basis. Again, you the people should and will set the tone. Finally, to my fellow candidates, never give up the fight for what you believe is best for the people. There is nothing more rewarding than when you run into a constituent who says “you don’t know me, we’ve never met but you have helped me and I will always be grateful”, when you are handing out an award to a 9 or 10 year old at a local school and you see the gleam of pride in their very new and trusting eye, when you sponsor or support a law that you follow through on and can actually see it help improve the quality of life for hundreds or even thousands of people or when you simply listen to the very real problems of your next door neighbor or someone in an entirely different section of our City. We, the candidates, come from many different backgrounds ethnic, educational achievements, job status and financial status as do the people of the City of East Providence. This is what makes our City great. The diversity, the dedication and the desire of all of us to serve our fellow “Townies” with total pride. This article is dedicated to those who have served the people well and to the best of their ability for various lengths of time but who have chosen not to run for another term. This new group of candidates salutes you and thanks you for your service and for setting the goals so high for us to achieve. Senator Frank Devall, Representative Jack Savage, Councilwoman Katie Kleyla, School Committee member Luisa Abatecola and School Committee member Ryan Tellier. We will miss you and wish you well in all your future endeavors.

The Community Players present Tom Griffin’s “The Boys Next Door”

The Community Players conclude their 91st season with Rhode Islander Tom Griffin’s very funny and heart-warming play, The Boys Next Door. Meet Arnold Wiggins. He’s basically a nervous person. He lives with Lucien P. Smith, who fancies very big books, and Norman Bulansky, who works in a doughnut shop, and Barry Klemper, who has schizophrenia and has convinced himself that he is a golf pro. These guys share an apartment for men with developmental disabilities, supervised by Jack, their caseworker, who, despite his genuine concern for his clients, is on the verge of total burn-out. Originally produced off-Broadway in 1986, the play was also made into an Emmy-nominated Hallmark Hall of Fame movie in 1996. Don’t miss this often hilarious yet touching look at life inside the group home. The Boys Next Door will be presented July 2022 and 27-29 at Jenks Auditorium, Division Street, Pawtucket, RI (across from McCoy Stadium). Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, and Sundays at 2 pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students through high school. Reserve at www.thecommunityplayers.org or call (401) 726-6860.

Shondra Texeira Accepted into the Macy’s Great American Marching Band

Under the direction of East Providence High School Band Director, Bobby Rathbone, sophomore (2014) Shondra Texeira, has been accepted into the Macy’s Great American Marching Band (MGAMB) for 2012. This is an accomplishment that she has achieved for a second year. Students are selected based on their musical ability and past achievements. The opportunity is open to students from over 14,000 high schools across the United States. Since 2006, when the band was formed, over 1500 students have had the opportunity to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as part of the MGAMB. While in NY, Shondra will have the opportunity to attend a leadership/educational workshop. The workshop will focus on encouraging students to achieve their maximum potential. In addition, Shondra, who is the daughter of Victor & Rita Texeira and sister of Taylor Texeira, has been selected by Music for All to be a member of the Bands of America (BOA) Honor Band in the 2013 Tournament of Roses® Parade. She was selected from among hundreds of applicants across the nation for membership in this prestigious national honor band. Shondra will spend a week in southern California where she will have rehearsals, participate in performances at the Tournament of Roses Bandfest and Disneyland, as well as in special activities, and make a featured appearance in the world-famous parade. The 124th Rose Parade®, presented by Honda and themed “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” will take place on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at 8:00 a.m. (PST). The 5.5-mile parade (which is often referred to as the “Rose Bowl Parade”) will be broadcast on ABC, Hallmark Channel, HGTV, KTLA (Tribune), NBC, RFD-TV and Univision. The Parade is also seen in more than 220 international territories and countries. EP Child at Great Outdoors Pursuit!

On May 20, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management held the launch event of its 5th annual Great Outdoors Pursuit at Lincoln Woods. It was a very fun day and such a delight to see so many children (and adults) across the state enjoying outdoor activities. The event also featured health screenings and a Health E. Hound fitness challenge, a healthy cooking demonstration, kayaking, horseback riding, fishing, tree identification, and old-fashioned lawn games. Many East Providence residents participated in the event, including 2-year-old Adrianna Lage, featured in the attached photo. As you can see, she could not have been more excited to be there! It’s a really nice shot. The event was sponsored by UnitedHealthcare and kicked off a summer-long program designed to help children, families and individuals enjoy the recreational resources R.I. state parks have to offer and encourage more physical activity by trying new outdoor activities. It’s also important to note to E.P. residents that it’s not too late to register for the Great Outdoors Pursuit; the May 20 event was just the beginning! There is another fantastic event featuring the National Double Dutch League that will be held on June 10 at the Kent County YMCA. If you’d like more information about the event or images afterward, I’m more than happy to send.

Townie Profile - John Carnavale - EPHS 2000 An Unassuming Hero By Bob Rodericks

John Carnavale, an EPHS 2000 graduate, has made his mark in this world. While in EP he was a three sport athlete and top student. Carnavale was always quiet and very popular and a leader early on. After graduation from high school, he attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he went on to study and receive a degree in engineering. But Carnavale wanted to make a difference in the world. After college graduation, he travelled to a rural area in Uganda and used his skills that he developed in school sports and later in engineering to assist the locals with the serious problems in life that they faced. “There, I was able to see the most critical community and individual needs in a truly poverty stricken area,” he said to EPHS students when recently visiting the school to inspire students. Upon arriving in Uganda, he walked the jungle and became a fast friend of the many children he met. During his extensive time there he raised money and used his own funds to build roads and kitchens for underprivileged children and families. Working long days, Carnavale became ill with a serious form of malaria and had to return home to California. He vowed, however, to return one day and do more. And do more, he did. Putting over a year of his engineering salary away as he lived very modestly, Carnavale returned to his Ugandan friends and really made a difference. On September 19, 2011 he finished construction of the ‘Donna Carnavale Medical Center’, a medical facility he named after his mother. “I just can’t believe it, he is so special,” said his mother who still resides in East Providence. “Oh you know

Fish-n-Chips Menu Available Fridays until Labor Day

John, he doesn’t want credit for anything he does,” she told the reporter in a recent interview. Carnavale also built the “Camilla Guest House” named after his grandmother. This guest house gives visiting doctors and familes a place to stay while sick children are being cared for. “If you feel something is right, you should never let anyone convince you otherwise. Your heart will guide you, take the risk and follow,” Carnavale told high school kids. Carnavale built both facilities with all of his own funding. He has worked to help many other charities but won’t discuss the specifics, preferring to remain unassuming in his efforts. In a recent conversation with the reporter he continued to shy away from the limelight. “My priorities are to help people and children and to organize quiet support for those who need assistance,” he said. When told that he was being mentioned as a nominee for the EPHS Hall of Fame, his answer was predictable. “Well, no, I’m not deserving. I’m too young and I haven’t done much in life yet,” he responded very quietly. “Now let’s talk about an effort to help refurbish the high school,” he went on to say. Carnavale is hoping to help other Townies renovate his alma mater’s decrepit gymnasium. John Carnavale - a Townie hero, helping the world. He resides in San Diego, California where he works at engineering, between heroic acts of volunteerism around the globe.

On the weekend of June 1st & June 2nd, the Special Olympics team from East Providence competed in the Special Olympics of Rhode Island’s 2012 State Summer Games, held on the campus of URI. Athletes from all over the state gather together for a weekend of competition including Aquatics, Bowling, Bicycling, Power lifting, Soccer, and Track & Field. The competition got off to a great start on Friday, with events in the afternoon and Opening Ceremonies at night. The highlight of the evening was the carrying in of the Special Olympic Torch followed by a parade of over 1,600 motorcycles and a wonderful fireworks display. That is a truly inspiring moment. The athletes, coaches, and chaperones stay overnight for the weekend in dormitories, along with the other teams from across the state. We had a beautiful Friday for the competition, but the rainstorm that followed on Saturday forced all of the activities indoors. That did not dampen the competitive fire of the athletes though. The closing ceremonies and dance were held inside Keaney Gymnasium that evening. The athletes listened to the music, danced, and celebrated with the same athletes that they competed so hard against during the day’s competition. They enjoyed meeting friends, the athletic competition, and the award ceremonies. The amount of effort and courage that is on display during the weekend is truly inspirational. Seeing the look on the athlete’s faces, as family and friends cheer them on, is one you will not soon forget.

The Firecrackers Made Their Mark

After most of the team had played together for several years the AYSO U12 “Firecrackers” made their mark on Youth Soccer in RI this season. This team began playing this competitive season as a group together in the AYSO competitive program during the fall of 2011. Only after an in game injury by defender, Jessica Doucette, with minutes left in the game, did we come in second place for the first indoor session at Teamworks in Warwick. After our success, we were placed in the top teir bracket and came in third place for the second in-door session at Teamworks. In the spring these young ladies shifted their focus to outdoor soccer and began their travel season. During the Spring Super Liga season, our team was undefeated through the regular season. In eight games opposing teams scored a total of four (4) goals against keeper Rebecca Helger. Skillful passing and tenacious effort allowed us to outscore our opponents by a total of 25 goals (goal differential). We were victorious in the Super Liga Championship (picture attached) against Coventry by a score of 6-1 in the Super Liga U12 Girls Classic Blue Division. We then moved on to the Rhode Island Cup were we advanced to and won the final this past Sunday by a score of 5-0. These young ladies were not only highly skilled, but they held the game to its highest standard and always exemplified great sportsmanship.

Thursday, July 19th at 7:00pm

Weaver Library welcomes university students from the Middle East and North Africa who have come to Rhode Island as participants in the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Student Leaders Programs. The students, who are recruited by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their home countries, seek to develop leadership skills and to expand their understanding of civil society as well as the democratic process. Most importantly, they hope to determine how this knowledge may be applied in their home communities. To this end, the Weaver Library will sponsor an open discussion with several MEPI students who will share first-hand information about their lives in the Middle East. Questions from the audience regarding society or culture, and/or political movements such as the Arab Spring will be welcomed.

Myron J. Francis Elementary donates over 100 baby items to EBCAP

Myron J. Francis Elementary School’s Community Service Committee packed up and delivered over 100 baby items to EBCAP. Items were collected from the school’s student families and the school’s staff and included diapers, wipes, baby washes, baby lotions, baby powders, diaper creams, other small toiletries, powdered formulas, bottles & bottle brushes, jarred baby foods, small baby toys, a bagful of bibs, a bagful of baby blankets, and a gently-used baby bathtub. The gentleman running the EBCAP pantry was very happy with the delivery! He said we had perfect timing... he had just gotten a call this morning asking for baby items and that they didn’t have any. He was very grateful to MJF, so a big thanks to everyone who was able to donate! Students from Martin and Riverside Middle Schools participate in Third Annual Financial Education Fair Sponsored by Columbus Credit Union

East Providence, RI – Students from Edward R. Martin and Riverside Middle Schools in East Providence and Riverside, Rhode Island, participated in the Third Annual CU4 Reality Financial Literacy Fair, sponsored by Columbus Credit Union. In preparation for the event, held at Edward R. Martin Middle School in East Providence on May 31, 2012, the students selected a career and researched a monthly salary. They brought this information to the fair and interacted with Columbus Credit Union and other selected businesses and organizations as consumers with real-life expenses such as housing, heat, electricity, food, transportation, insurance, cable television, digital telephone, and high-speed internet services, and other consumer choices. The students applied the knowledge they gained during the school year on managing their personal finances and budgeting, and experienced first-hand what it takes to make ends meet month to month by visiting with representatives from Best Buy, Donovan Travel, Columbus Credit Union, Elmwood Dodge, Kathleen’s Avon Boutique, Legacy Financial Services, LLC., Liberty Mutual Insurance, Money Management International, Newman YMCA, RE/MAX River’s Edge, RISPCA, Soiree Salon and Spa, and Stop and Shop. The students’ last stop at the fair was to spin the “Wheel of Reality”, also known as the “Wheel of Misfortune” resulting in a positive or negative financial consequence such as a $500 bonus from work or a $500 computer crash. The CU4 Reality Fair was attended by guests that included the Superintendent of Schools in East Providence, Dr. Edward Daft, and Mayor Bruce Rogers. Both Superintendent Daft and Mayor Rogers were very impressed with the way that the CU4 Reality Program and Fair helped the students formulate goals for the future and understand important financial literacy concepts such as how budgeting works with caree rs. Columbus Credit Union established the partnership with the Edward R. Martin and Riverside Middle Schools in 2009 and sponsored the CU4 Reality Financial Education Program and Fair

45

in the 2009-2010, 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 academic years. The CU4 Reality Program was developed by the Financial Literacy Education Committee (FLEC) of America’s Credit Union Museum in association with the New Hampshire Credit Union Association. The Principal of Edward R. Martin Middle School, Glenn J. Piros, stated: “With middle school students learning to transition into the secondary school system, the CU4 Reality Program and Fair allows them to gain a better understanding of the educational process and set goals for their future. The program teaches the students about real-life expenses to help them prepare for life after secondary school. It has been a great program to reinforce what the students are learning about the economy, and the school enjoys hosting the Annual CU4 Reality Financial Education Fair. In these tough economic times, it is imperative that we continue to build these school and community partnerships that benefit students with hands-on learning.” “Columbus Credit Union has been happy to be associated with the schools, and it has been rewarding to see the students gain a real appreciation for the importance of financial planning and how it will affect them in their lives,” said Cidalia C. Rocha, CEO of Columbus Credit Union. Columbus Credit Union’s Riverside Branch Manager, Natalia Lima, made presentations to the middle school students on Careers and Savings Accounts; Checking and Debit Accounts; Credit, Savings and Investments, and Budgeting. “Throughout the school year, I have had the opportunity to educate the students through financial literacy with the hopes that lifelong lessons can be learned through the CU4 Reality program. It was so rewarding to see the students’ engaged and excited at our third annual fair,” said Natalia C. Lima, Branch Manager of Columbus Credit Union, Riverside location. Columbus Credit Union was established more than 60 years ago and is a cooperatively owned, state chartered, federally insured community financial institution. The Credit Union offers an open field of membership which includes individuals, fraternal organizations, voluntary associations, partnerships and corporations and serves over 6,000 members through its branches in Warren, at 560 Main Street, and in Riverside, at 3 Crescent View Avenue.

City Council and School Board Races Take Shape

47

By Bob Rodericks City Council and School Committee responsibilities have certainly changed since the inception of a state-ordered budget commission which essentially took over all aspects of East Providence city government. Commission Chair, Michael O’Keefe has just announced that he is stepping down from the ending Diane Brennan, new state revenue director as his replacement. O’Keefe has taken a hard line stand in overseeing city finances, telling parents and supporters of school sports, “…you want these activities, pay more in taxes or raise the funds yourselves…”. While some may have been a little upset with some of the commission’s comments, most residents and officials have generally supported the work of O’Keefe and his group. With officials in the city believe that city council and school committee members are subject to the edicts from the budget commission, election hype has been somewhat muted this year. The races shape up as follows. City Council, Ward 1: Announced candidates are James Briden, Edward Lynch and Philip Vieira. Incumbent Katie Kleyla is not seeking re-election. Ward 2: Candidates are Melissa Abbott, Helder Cunha, Burton Plamondon and Mayor Bruce Rogers who is seeking re-election. Ward 3: Daniel Dalton, incumbent Thomas Rose and Candy Seel. Ward 4: Chrissy Rossi and incumbent Michael DiGioia, seeking re-election . Council-At-Large: Tracy Adams Capobianco and Steven Santos. Capobianco is a newcomer and Santos is a former school committee member. Only one school committee member is seeking re-election. Steve Furtado of Ward 2 will run again and is opposed by Anthony Ferreira. Ward 1: Charlie Tsonos is seeking a state house seat and three will vie to replace him. Elizabeth Clupney, Thomas Clupney and Betty DeCrescenzo. Ward 3: Richard Pimentel will run unopposed. Ward 4: Timothy Conley and Curtis Greene, Jr. will run. Incumbent Chrissy Rossi has announced for the Ward 4 city council seat. School Committee At-Large: Joel Monteiro will face off against Ronald Warr, Jr. Luisa Abatecola will not seek reelection. The school committee has not been allowed to make any major decisions without getting prior approval from the state budget commission. At some point the committee will have to address the expired teacher’s contract. While a tentative agreement has been reached, the commission has not allowed ratification and the teacher’s have filed an unfair labor practice complaint. A new committee will have to also address lawsuits filed against the city by former school superintendent, Dr. Mario Cirillo and his chief aide, Chief Operating Officer Lonnie Barham. Cirillo was dismissed by the current committee and Barham’s position was eliminated. Ctiy Council members will also face critical issues. The city is still getting used to a new city manager, who at times has been criticized by the budget commission. it is also believed that the former city building inspector may have won his wrohful dismissal suit and is entitled to a monetary award. Stay tuned and check in regularly with ReporterToday.com.

Taylor Couto East Providence, RI - Deeply affected by learning about a young boy within the Bay View Academy community who was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Taylor Coutu (East Providence), a fifth grader at Bay View came up with an idea. She decided to make a video of her Little Rhody Aquatics Club swim meets and then sell the video to members and parents; donating all of the proceeds for his care. Cole Grace is the grandson of Bay View Academy staff member and alumna, Mary Rebello Grace (East Providence). He was hospitalized with a brain tumor of January 27, 2012, and was quickly diagnosed with Grade IV Glioblastoma. He was featured on The Rhode Show after getting a “shout out” from Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler on American Idol. Cole was able to Skype chat with Tyler, and was also given the opportunity to sing “Walk This Way” with his hero. The Bay View community has rallied behind Cole and his family in both prayer and fundraising. Taylor Coutu took it one step further with her extra-curricular fundraiser. Her parents, Keith and Nicole Couto, helped her make the swim video, which she sold to raise $250.00. The team’s coach, John O’Neill (Cumberland, RI) matched the amount for a total of $500.00 Taylor’s teacher, Kristine Durkay (Seekonk, MA) says, “I am very proud of Taylor and all the girls who continue with daily prayers for Cole. Taylor showed us how to put these spiritual acts into corporal acts of mercy.” St. Mary Academy-Bay View is an independent Catholic School for girls open to all faiths, Pre-kindergarten through Grade 12, located in East Providence, Rhode Island. In existence since 1874, Bay View endeavors to provide a quality education preparing girls and young women for the challenges of the global community. St. Mary Academy– Bay View is a college preparatory school accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

2012 Bravo, Bradley! Raises awareness and nearly $300,000 for autism programs and research

Cutcliffe Glavin

Director of autism center shared insights into groundbreaking work in the genetics of autism that could lead to means to prevent autism at annual hospital fundraiser

(401) 454-1900 Fax (401) 331-7001

East Providence, R.I. – On Friday, June 1, Bradley Hospital, the nation’s first psychiatric hospital devoted exclusively to children and adolescents, raised nearly $300,000 at its annual fundraiser, Bravo, Bradley!, at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston, R.I. Two hundred seventy-five Bradley supporters attended the gala event, which recognized clinical work in autism and other pediatric mental health conditions and raised awareness about promising research into the genetics of autism under way at the hospital. The evening provided an opportunity for the community to both celebrate and further the progress of children and families who benefit from all of Bradley’s programs. The master of ceremonies for the event was Barbara Morse Silva, Channel 10 Health Check Reporter. The co-chairs of the event were Gary and Roberta Serby. Guest enjoyed dinner catered by Russell Morin Fine Catering, a live auction presented by Paul Zekos of The Zekos Group, and dancing to the sounds of Brass Attack. “The outpouring of support, both physical and monetary, at this annual event is truly inspiring. We are so grateful to have the support of leading Rhode Island companies like Hasbro, Inc., and Amica Insurance, who lead a long list of caring partners that make this evening possible. Their ongoing involvement, combined with the efforts and generosity of so many business and community leaders and caring individuals, means so much to all of us at Bradley Hospital,” said Daniel J. Wall, president and chief executive officer. Rowland Barrett, Ph.D., director of the Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities at Bradley Hospital, provided an overview of the Center’s clinical work in the genetics of autism, focusing on future prevention. This research is led by Eric Morrow, M.D., Ph.D., director of the developmental disorders genetics research program. Morrow and his team are using genometric methods to help identify genetic markers that indicate autism. The ultimate outcome could be akin to the creation of a simple blood test for autism to be administered to infants, similar to how the “heel prick” test for phenylketonuria (PKU) is done on infants now. In the case of the PKU test, if an infant is found to be lacking a specific enzyme, the infant’s diet is altered to actually prevent brain damage. The autism research at Bradley holds similar potential. “This promises to be a game changer in fighting this disorder. The results are going to guide treatment in autism and potentially even lead us to methods that may allow us to prevent autism,” Morrow stated in a video shown at the event. Proceeds from the event will support Bradley Hospital’s programs that benefit children and adolescents. The live auction Fund-A-Need will support the work of the Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities, including its Intensive Behavioral Treatment program.

Scouting Around Town Girl Scouts 100th Year Celebration East Providence Girl Scouts held a 100th year celebration at the East Providence Scout House located at 351 Willett Avenue in Riverside on Sunday, June 3rd. Many former and current Girl Scouts attended the event. On display were Girl Scout uniforms worn over the past 50 years, old camping tins, silverware, badges, patches, a 1933 First Aid Kit, pictures and other memorabilia. A time capsule that had been made by East Providence Girl Scouts 25 years ago was opened. Current Girl Scouts were surprised by some of the similarities that they shared with former Girl Scouts and awed by some of the differences between “then and now. What an interesting learning experience! Some of the special attendees included Ms. Lillian Almeida who was a Girl Scout for more than 60 years, Ms. Shelley Pray who was a Girl Scout for 17 years, and Ms. Candy Wotton Weaver who became a Brownie Girl Scout in September of 1954 and a Girl Scout leader in Salem, Oregon in 1967. Ms. Cornelia Sturgus - who became a Girl (Mariner) Scout in Bristol in 1932 - brought a diary containing the events of every Girl Scout meeting from October 7, 1938 through October 7, 1940. These ladies enjoyed sharing their Girl Scout experiences and reminiscing about their days as former Girl Scouts!

A guide to healthy summer eating

Miriam Hospital experts offer tips to keep your waistline, and your health, in check this summer PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For many Rhode Islanders, summer means family cook-outs, clambakes on the beach and visits to the ice cream parlor. But experts at The Miriam Hospital caution that some of our favorite summer activities and treats could not only sabotage your diet but could also pose a major health threat. “Not only do we tend to indulge in fatty, sugary foods more often during the summer, but when we’re having fun at a picnic or barbecue, many of us leave things like cheese or deli meat sitting out for hours and hours – which increases the risk of food poisoning,” said Kimberly S. Maloomian, RD, LDN, a dietitian at The Miriam Hospital. “But with a little careful planning, and the knowledge that it’s OK to indulge occasionally, it’s very easy to keep you and your family healthy and safe this summer.”

Maloomian offers some tips to avoid some of the common summer eating pitfalls: Healthy eats

A few days before a cookout, buy some avocados and allow them to soften on the countertop. Then cube them and put into a salad that would normally require mayonnaise, such as potato salad. When you scoop up a bite of the salad with some cubes of avocado, the avocado will spread over the food in your mouth and create that same smooth feeling that mayonnaise usually gives to the dish, but with no saturated fat and lots of great omega-3 fatty acids. Replace pasta in pasta salads with quinoa, a high protein grain that was a staple in the ancient South American diet. Quinoa can be cooked just like rice: two parts water or broth and one part quinoa for about 10 minutes. Then toss with lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, dill, feta cheese and cucumbers or any other items you would add to pasta salad. To help keep chicken, turkey, salmon or tuna burgers moist on the grill, mix fat-free plain Greek yogurt in with the meat prior to

shaping it into patties. Dried herbs, finely chopped bell peppers and onions and even mushrooms could even be added. The Greek yogurt will provide extra moisture to the meat and also provide an extra protein and calcium boost. Instead of quenching your thirst with a cool, but calorie-laden, soda, mix half a pitcher of Crystal Light with one liter seltzer water. Cool and refreshing with only a few calories! It’s certainly okay to indulge in ice cream and other summer treats, but don’t forget that delicious fruit like strawberries, blueberries and watermelon are in season and can also satisfy a sweet tooth – plus they’re fat-free and high in nutrients and fiber.

Summer food safety

Use those insulated coolers! Warmer weather creates an atmosphere for food-borne bacteria to multiply rapidly. If you’re going to a picnic or other outside event, remember that any perishable food that would normally be in the refrigerator must be kept at a minimum of 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so pack plenty of ice. And don’t forget about leftovers. Anything that is not going to be eaten within four hours should go right back in the cooler or refrigerator. A good rule of thumb: When in doubt, throw it out. Meat grills the best when it is allowed to come up to room temperature. Leave meat in the ice box until about 30 minutes prior to grilling. When meat is left out to come up to room temperature, leave it inside on a countertop, if possible – as long as it is not in direct sunlight. Just before grilling, season with salt and pepper and some herbs and ‘throw’ it on the fire! Remember, meat should never be left on the counter for more than two hours – any longer can promote harmful bacterial growth. If using thongs to place meat on the grill, be sure to wash them before touching meat again. Bacteria that can cause food-borne illness will have attached themselves to the tongs in the 10 seconds it takes to move the raw meat from the plate to the grill.
