East Providence Heritage Festival 2011
E.P. Heritage Festival - Striving & Thriving!!!
3
By Gina Wesley-Silva
It’s time again for The Annual East Providence Heritage Festival, that wonderful event that celebrates the various cultures and traditions of the people who make up our city, and our world. Celebrating its 31st year, this event is looked forward to all year round, partly because it seems to get better and better each year, by offering the perfect match between cultural representation, great food, outstanding entertainment, comfortable accommodations, local vendors, friendly people, good beer – and usually even great weather! Could it be that even the gods smile down upon this festival?
Yes, blessings from everywhere do seem to embrace the festival, but its biggest blessing and benefactor has to be its planning and organizing committee. The Heritage Festival Committee is a 17 member, mostly volunteer body of dedicated folks, who tirelessly and lovingly overlook every minute detail of this annual event to ensure yet another phenomenal success. And, this is no easy task. Committee Chairman Clarence “Junior” Butler explains the process, “The Heritage Fest Committee meets each month, normally on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, beginning in August – just after the festival in July ends. We look at what we did, what we accomplished, what we didn’t accomplish, and how well it was received. At that point we start thinking about how we can improve it, and what we can do to make it better for the next year,” says Butler. But, even with that explanation, many would still be surprised at exactly how much detail the committee investigates to keep the festival thriving from one year to the next. Committee member and Pierce Field Manager Joseph Medeiros explained that something as seemingly unimportant as what types of beer to offer can make a huge difference in the relative success of the festival. “We switched a couple of years ago to Miller Lite and Narragansett beers and that has worked out real well,” he said. He added, “And, we did something else new last year that also worked out really well, which is we kept all the food vendors in one location, and all the crafts and novelty vendors separate from them. It worked out logistically too for electricity & water, and keeping everyone supplied. We need to be able to dispense our beer and wine, and keep it cold, and still get through the crowds to replenish it when it runs low – sometimes just getting through crowd is tough enough,” he said.
Butler then added, “Also we learned to make proper selection of food vendors, so we don’t have 5 vendors selling sausage sandwiches, for instance. We try to weed that out and offer a variety of foods, so that we have no more than two vendors selling the same product. The bottom line is, the planning and thought processes that go into this event is a year round situation,” he concluded.
Each year the festivals’ biggest attraction and source of highest profits come from its local and national entertainment acts, specifically the Saturday night headliners. This year the festival is proud to announce that Dennis DeYoung: The Music of Styx will be performing on Saturday July, 16 2011 at 9:30pm. And since year after year, the festival seems to grow and get better you have to wonder how the committee manages to select the right groups and what the selection process is like. Butler explained, “When we get to deciding which groups to bring in, we look at a lot of different aspects. We look at the buying power of the audience, an audience of people in the 30 – 45 age bracket, because that is our primary audience, and that 30 – 45 age bracket is who has expendable money to spend. This is important because we need to turn over a good profit each year to maintain the festival. So, we look at groups who will appeal to that age bracket, and it is very hard and we disagree amongst ourselves as to what groups are best suited to pull in the crowd that we need,” he said. Mystic Jammers
Like reggae music? Love the steel drum and that Caribbean sound? Great, then you will love Mystic Jammers! In fact, since 1985 this band has been touring the Northeast as the premier reggae band in the area, and for good reason too. Fans say this band is the perfect combination of Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix. But, actually the band influences are even more broad, and include the likes of Burning Spear, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Black Uhuru too. Mystic Jammers is a 9-piece band of highly talented personalities. Its members are Lon Plynton on bass and vocals, Vaughn Anderson on steel drums, Nate Davignon on percussion, Tony Blackett and Willie Myette on keyboards, John Booth on guitar, Amirah Nuriddin and Jennifer Boyer as vocalists, and Jared Williams on drums. If you have ever seen their live show, you know why they are so popular! You are probably still amazed at the memory of seeing things like John Booth soloing while hanging upside down, or Lon Plynton dancing down the bar and jumping over drinks - while playing his bass, etc., etc. The bands’ unique combining of other music genres, with their reggae and Caribbean roots, produces an edgy and provocative sound, and for most bands that would be enough of an accomplishment, in and of itself. But, Mystic Jammers offers even more to please the crowd, by including inspirational lyrics with tight vocals, and adding monstrous bass playing, and a stellar lead guitar to their performances as well – wow! Mystic Jammers’ performances are also known for providing the perfect combination of well-loved reggae covers with pleasing new original tunes as well. This band delights both young and old with their reggae, jazz, Caribbean, and Motown music! Put simply, Mystic Jammers is a fun, unique, and exciting performing act. A must see! Mystic Jammers will be performing on Saturday, 7/16/11 at 4:30pm.

Back by popular demand, and certainly a local favorite, Band of Brothers will once again grace our stage this year! Band of Brothers is a unique combination of six local musicians who have been playing for more than 40 years. If you know of, or remember bands like One Bone Shy, Déjà Vu, Time-Piece, Neon Jungle or Wayz and Means, then you might recognize some current players from those bands. Band of Brothers is made up of Fred Komiega on lead vocals, guitar, and hand percussion, Eric Komiega on vocals and drums, Ed Rashed on vocals and keyboards, Nick Smith on vocals and lead guitar, Lenny Vales on lead guitar, and Eric Leffingwell on vocals and bass guitar. You may have noticed there are more than a few singers in this band, and that is not by accident. Band of Brothers specifically came together to form a band that showcases incredible vocal harmonies and a unique variety of music that you don’t typically hear when you go out to hear live music. In fact, Band of Brothers takes extreme pride in giving audiences a show that they will not forget! Or at least that is their official statement. However, insiders know the real deal, which is that Band of Brothers is a brotherhood of sorts. It is made up of a close knit group of friends, two of which are brothers, Fred and Eric Komiega, who purposely chose their name because of the close relationships they had all formed with each other over the years. The idea of starting an acoustic act, (which actually became Band of Brothers), came about in 2003, in Eric’s living room. The band got started by playing small parties, coffee shops, and small club venues for about a year before it took off and went from a small acoustic setting to a fully electrified six piece act. But, at the height of the band’s popularity, original member Brad Randall was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. The band was devastated and cancelled many shows that year, but finally took the stage again, as the opening act for Loverboy at the 2008 East Providence Heritage Festival. And, in 2009 Band of Brothers played the E. P. Heritage Festival again as the openers for The Machine. With the bands’ current “stronger than ever” lineup, Band of Brothers promises to delight fans with their signature vocal blends, and eclectic variety of classic rock music at this years’ Heritage Festival. Band of Brothers appears on Saturday 7/16 at 8pm on the stadium stage as the opening act for Dennis DeYoung: The Music of Styx. You won’t be disappointed!

Dennis DeYoung: The Music of Styx Let me paint the scene for you…it’s Saturday night, mid-July. You’re sitting comfortably outside at Pierce Stadium, beverage in hand, on a lawn chair or blanket. Or maybe you’re standing up. In either case you’re looking towards the main stage with excited anticipation, because you know you are about to witness something wonderful! And then it happens! Dennis DeYoung: The Music of Styx arrives onstage to a thunderous barrage of applause and whistles from the audience all around you. You, yourself cannot help but become part of the din, and you’re surprised at how much fun you’re actually having at it! You then notice that you feel almost insanely joyful and free – such as you have not felt since you were a kid! But, before those wonderful feelings can fully register or permeate your consciousness, one of classic rocks’ most famous and powerful voices peels through the evening air with a majesty all its own! In that instant you realize that not only has Dennis DeYoung arrived , but he has also triumphantly proclaimed his presence too! And then, as hoped for and eagerly anticipated – you are completely rocked outta your socks! This is not a fantasy. In fact, with a change of location or venue, this is the exact scene that plays out at every concert where Dennis DeYoung: The Music of Styx performs. And, this year this scene will play out at the 31st Annual East Providence Heritage Festival. Amen and hallelujah! Singer, songwriter, producer, and keyboardist DeYoung was the legendary frontman for Styx for almost 15 years. The band formed in 1970, and achieved international stardom with their 1972 rock classic hit “Lady.” DeYoung was the creative force behind “Lady,” and many of the band’s other hit songs too. He is also remembered for his prominent lead synthesizer solos, and of course, his most amazing voice! Deyoung is also gifted with a great sense of humor, as is evidenced on his new website where he writes, “Hey everybody, Yes the man who wrote “the problem’s plain to see too much technology” has finally decided to update his website, hope you like it. The old site was designed when the World Wide Web was still powered by oxen and a mouse was an actual live rodent.” And, when DeYoung was voted # 22 as the greatest rock keyboardist of all time, his response was, “From accordion player to this. I would have been higher if polkas had been considered.” In 1984 Styx broke up and DeYoung began a solo career with modest success. Then in 1989 Styx unofficially reformed, and returned to the studio to work on the album Edge of the Century. In 1996 Styx toured for the first time in four years. This “Return to Paradise” tour proved very successful, so Styx returned to the studio again in 1998, to begin working on their first studio album in eight years. However, in spite of the renewed success that the reunion and touring brought Styx, old problems, resulting from musical and personal differences between band members, began to resurface. To
East ProvidEncE HEritagE FEstival 2011 make matters worse, DeYoung developed a disorder which left him overly sensitive to bright light and sound, which made performing on stage nearly impossible for him. Eventually in 1999 DeYoung was replaced. The ensuing lawsuit between DeYoung and his former bandmates was settled in 2001. The group was allowed to keep the name “Styx,” and DeYoung was allowed to use the name in descriptive phrases such as, “the music of Styx.” Then in 2000, DeYoung was asked to perform a concert featuring his many songs from Styx. This concert formed the basis for a touring version of the show, and eventually led to an album, The Music of Styx - Live with Symphony Orchestra, in 2004. Todays’ version of Dennis DeYoung:The Music of Styx, features a stellar six member band, and showcases all their greatest hits from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, including “Lady,” “Come Sail Away,” and “Too Much Time On My Hands.” DeYoung will be joined onstage by Tom Sharpe on drums, August Zadra on lead guitar and vocals, Jimmy Leahey on lead guitar and vocals, John Blasucci on keyboards, and Craig Carter on bass and vocals. So there you have it! All the Styx hits and memories in one unforgettable evening. And that evening is Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 9:30pm at Pierce Stadium.

MAASAI
MAASAI is a reggae ensemble that has a purpose and a direction that is all its own. Significantly more than just a band, MAASAI provides more than just good musical entertainment. MAASAI is, in fact, a force, a message and a vision, which chronicles, compliments, and defiantly enhances its authentic Afro-Caribbean/Reggae roots. MAASAI founder and songwriter, Abdul Mateen, is the source of the vision, and the keeper of the culture and tradition. A fantastic drummer and singer, Mateen explains, “Just as the Masai of Tanzania have been instrumental against colonial rule and cultural destruction or manipulation, so is the musical and cultural stand that MAASAI massive takes to keep integral roots and keep a musical message in the mix. We seek to motivate, inspire, inform, and remind folks to remember who they truly are. We tell you that you are more than what you have become, and we encourage you to remember that,” he says. Born in Harlem, NY, Mateen began studying music at the age of 8, starting with violin. Later he began studying the saxophone, guitar, piano, drums and vocals. Mateen has performed with many top recording artists such as Tom Brown, Roy Haynes, Roy Ayres, Lonnie Liston Smith, Wire Lindo & I Performers and more. Onstage MAASAI is one of the most engaging reggae bands around today, according to its many fans and reviews, such as the following, “Invigorating with no weak links in sound or message. MAASAI on Earth Day - perfect!” -Michael Caito, Providence Phoenix, “Awesome percussion. Drums that takes the excitement level right off the scope. Abdul is as good as they come!”Valerie Ridenour, Key West, Florida, and “Mateen’s falsetto is calming and tuneful, a balm for frayed nerves”. -Mike Boehm, LA Times In 2003 MAASAI won 2 grammy nominations for “Best Reggae Album” and “Best Album Cover Design”. Obviously, MAASAI is hitting its mark. MAASAI will be performing on Sunday, July 17 at 4pm in the field tent.

~ From everyone at The East Providence Reporter
Attention Van Halen fans!! Suffering from Van Halen withdrawals?! Well, suffer no more! In fact, it’s time to “Jump” (pardon the pun,) for joy, because help is on the way! That’s right, and it’s coming in the form of a monster Van Halen tribute band called Completely Unchained! Completely Unchained is composed of four talented and creative musicians who absolutely re-create the ultimate Van Halen production. Let’s start with Eugene Henriksen, as David Lee Roth. First of all, this guy Henriksen definitely has that Roth attitude, looks, and flare, so we’re good there! Next, we have Joe Roggio on guitar and vocals, all we can say about him is, if we can’t have Eddie Van Halen, Roggio will certainly handle things! Then, rounding out the whole Van Halen experience, we have Kevin Humphris on bass, and he is killer on it, and then there is George Pagonis on drums. Fans have just one word to describe his playing, they call it “awesome!” Yup, Completely Unchained is complete with the attitude, sounds, excitement, energy and most of all, the fun that Van Halen produced as one of the best rock bands in the world! Completely Unchained keeps that legend alive. When you go to see a concert with this tribute band, you are impressed right from the beginning. Completely Unchained starts off each show by reproducing the very best of the original line up, then merging the “Van Hagar” era with some David Lee Roth solo hits, and then completes a whole catalog of some of the greatest hard rock songs ever recorded, such as their classics “Jump”, “Running With the Devil,” “Hot for Mention this ad Teacher,” and of course, “Unchained.” Completely Unchained brings back to life an experience that was definitely one of a kind! Who didn’t love the way Van Halen rocked the world back in the late 70’s and early 80’s? We all remember it! Van Halen had it all, including the best guitarist on the planet, a killer lead singer with a great voice, and the biggest personality in our solar system, a bass player who laid down the law on bass while singing pristine harmonies over the top, and a drummer who kicked major

East ProvidEncE HEritagE FEstival 2011 butt! Van Halen created some of the best tunes ever heard on the radio, and they did it while all smiling those big, contagious smiles! Every show was like a huge party that left you feeling way more than just good! And, Completely Unchained captures the essence and energy of the classic Van Halen performance and experience! Ultimately, Completely Unchained takes the primary concept of a tribute band and raises it to a whole new level of re-creation. Because, not only do they recreate the music with unsurpassed skill, but the energy onstage and the production at each performance is dead on classic Van Halen. No other Van Halen tribute band brings the entire package together like Completely Unchained does! Completely Unchained will strut their Van Halen stuff on Sunday, July 17 at 7:15pm on the main stage.

ALMOST QUEEN
Freddie Mercury is gone and has been for some time, so the band Queen we once knew that dominated the airwaves and the charts back in the 70’s and 80’s is no more. But, is that true? Not according to the experts it isn’t. That’s right – those who know say Queen tribute band, Almost Queen, is the real deal. And, if one considers the litany of impressive reviews from fans, many of whom are also music industry types, you get the idea that this band is at least a cut above the rest.
Consider these direct quotes, “You don’t even have to close your eyes to imagine you’re at a QueenShow! These guys even look the part!” Bob Buchmann, Program Director Q104.3 WAXQ NY, and here’s another quote, “Without a doubt, Almost Queen are probably the finest testimonial to Queen I have ever had the pleasure in seeing. If Freddie were alive today he’d queue for tickets!” Eric Cook, Demolition Records, UK., and how about this one, “If Queen wasn’t Queen, these guys would definitely be Queen.” AJ

Pero -Twisted Sister, and my personal favorite, “The beautiful thing about this band is that all the youngsters are able to catch a glimpse of the greatness that is Queen and all of us old timers can watch and say, “Oh man, do you remember when Queen used to do that!?” Fingers -WBAB, NY. See what I mean? Hailed as New Yorks’ finest and best Queen tribute band, Almost Queen comes to the E.P. Heritage Festival in style – that is, they are coming to continue racking up more and more satisfied fans and impressive credos! Here’s what makes them so mesmerizing and great! Almost Queen succeeds in blending the vocal layering and studio precision that is the signature of the band, with the energy and spectacle of a live stage production. Their shows are an explosion of elaborate lighting, effects and costumes which aptly frame the seasoned musicians who step into these very large shoes to effectively render an authentic “Queen experience,” leaving their audiences to hum their favorites for the next week or so. No surprise then that Almost Queen boasts an unbroken string of sold out theaters from New York to San Diego, while headlining major rock festivals in a number of U.S. cities as well as in foreign countries too!
East ProvidEncE HEritagE FEstival 2011 What about showmanship? Well, let’s just say that comes naturally too, especially with lead singer Joseph Russo, who is a veteran of the Broadway stage. Other band members are Randy Gregg on bass, John Cappadona on drums, and Steve Leonard on guitar. And, all band members flex all of their musical and seasoned performance chops in proudly presenting to you the penultimate live Queen concert. Since their inception in 1972, Queen has been one of the most successful and beloved bands in the history of rock and roll. Their musical skills, showmanship, and ability to create lasting, memorable music has remained undimmed for over 30 years. The magic that they created in the studio was matched only by the exuberance and energy they evoked during their live performances, which frequently took their studio masterpieces into new and exciting directions. Almost Queen succeeds in blending the vocal layering and studio precision that is Queen. Hardcore Queen fans will notice and appreciate the details, others will just be blown away by the spectacle. Seems one thing is certain with this band, and that is that “almost” doesn’t count, apparently, this IS Queen. Almost Queen will close out the Heritage Festival on Sunday July, 17 at 9pm.
Rumford Lions Chowder & Clam Cakes
As you enter the ball field at Heritage Days the first thing you see is the clam cake and chowder trailer of the Rumford Lions. The Lions have been selling these delectable delights since the very first Heritage Days Festival. Their top secret chowder receipt is more closely guarded that that of Coca Cola, the Colonel’s special spices or Asquino’s pasta sauce. Every year people come back for second and third helpings of this creamy white chowder which is loaded with clams, potatoes and many other ingredients. The clam cakes have more clams than you’ll see on a clam boat emptying its load at the dock. The demand for these golden brown heavenly treats will again be very high so don’t wait too long to get to the trailer and order a dozen or two but please don’t ask for ketchup. While there pick up a cold drink to top off a gourmet meal. Remember that everyone working at this trailer is a volunteer and 100% of all proceeds are put right back into the community through the Rumford Lions charitable efforts. Also if you are interested in helping serve the entire community of East Providence and surrounding areas please stop by and see how you may become a Lion.

Hours: Mon-Thurs 7am-2am; Fri & Sat 7am-3am But, if you’re like most people, you’re probably not going to get to experience Brazil any time soon, right? Wrong, because Brazil is coming to you – in the form of a group called Marcus Santos & AfroBrazil! Marcus Santos & AfroBrazil brings the magic and excitement of African and Brazilian music, and their culture and tales, to audiences all across New England. Band leader Marcus Santos, is a native of Salvador, in Bahia, Brazil, and is a most amazing performer. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from The Berklee College of Music, and graduated with honors. The Marcus Santos & AfroBrazil project join together the percussion grooves of the Brazilian Carnival with the powerful melodies of Axé music, which results in the creation of a fantastic, high energy Afro-South American show. The rhythm section is comprised of exceptional Brazilian musicians who bring you the harmonies that Brazil is known and loved for. The percussion section will simply and literally “bring the house down!” In fact, this is one of only a few bands that are known for producing shows that can only be described as pure artistry. Marcus Santos & AfroBrazil creates a unique opportunity for those who appreciate African history and culture, by exploring the links between Brazil and Africa with a special focus on music. So not only do you learn a great deal about African and Brazilian culture, you have fun while learning it too. The Marcus Santos& AfroBrazil show is a family event that is fun for everyone. This group knows how to have a great time and they are exceptional at engaging their audience into helping to create one heck of a party! Brazilian style! Marcus Santos & AfroBrazil will be performing on Sunday 7/17 at 5:30pm in the field tent.

because it is just a shade out of our price range. But, to see this show for $10, it will be well worth it!” Butler says attracting the right talent can be very tricky, “That’s something people probably don’t understand – a lot of times people will come up to me and ask why we don’t have this band or that band! We would love to have certain bands, but we can only afford what we can afford.” He went on to explain that last year they tried to get a Grammy award winning group who had been We Now indicted into the hall of fame, but the band cost $90,000 just to Have entertain. “There’s no way we can afford $90,000! We would have TM to charge at least $40 or $50 on Saturday night alone, in order to 14-Day bring in a group that charges us $90,000! It’s impossible,” he said. EYELASH wear It is clear however, that both Butler and Medeiros see this EXTENSIONS festival as much more than just an opportunity for monetary profit. Summer Specials For Butler, the Annual E.P. Heritage Festival is a source of pride. • $5.00 OFF Full Set Acrylic Nails “This city, this event – this defines who we really are. The effort of • $5.00 OFF Manicure & Pedicure Combo the committee and the sponsors and the people who attend and • $5.00 OFF Eyelash Extensions support us does not go unnoticed. The reward for me is just in being a major part of another great concert,” he said. • 20 Minute Foot Massage $15.00 Medeiros offers another perspective on the value of the Sale ends 8-31-11 festival, “We know it’s difficult money-wise nowadays for the city, and for people. But, you can’t take things like this away, not just NOW ACCEPTING Gift Also Offering the festival, but all the things that bring people together! Because KIDS & ADULT Certificates Waxing & these are the things that get people from one weekend to the BIRTHDAY Available next! Forget about this contract or that conflict going on in the Facials PARTIES city, but take away a little league, or a Pop Warner, and people go Open 7 days a week crazy! So, if we lost something like this, it would be a huge loss 150 Highland Ave., Route 6 (Next to Bob's Store), Seekonk, MA for everyone!” And, it is a good thing Butler and Medeiros feel the way they do, because the committee is almost entirely self2780 Pawtucket Ave. 401-434-7471 funded. “This event is self-sustaining, with very little help from the city. We raise most East Providence, RI of the money from year to year ourselves from sponsors. So, even though we make a profit, we re-invest it back into the organization to keep this festival going year after year,” said Butler. The Heritage Fest Committee also Michelle Smith-Goncalves, D.M.D • Nicole Smith-Steckler, D.M.D donates to other organizations, charities, NOS FALAMOS PORTUGUESE and non-profits such as the American Cancer Society, East Bay Women’s Shelter, and Insurance Accepted Big Brothers Association, and this year they will be giving a portion of the proceeds SENIOR CITIZENS WELCOME to Builders Helping Heroes. Financing With No Interest Available • Emergencies Receive Priority Medeiros adds, “Each year we select a different charity, and we also donate profits to help out local kids, such as the E.P. High School Arts Department and the E.P. Mohawks,” he said. On a more somber note, Butler spoke of a special memorial in honor of Samuel Abbood, who was a prominent supporter of 901 Broadway, East Providence, RI 02914 the festival for 29 years. “We will be placing a plaque on the baseball field stage in honor of Sammy Abbood. And, next year we will be providing a $500 scholarship through E.P. High in his name too,” he said. But, in spite of all the good the festival brings to E.P. each year, Butler says there are some critics of the festival too. Some RI 401-434-7744 MA 505-336-7979 residents who live near Pierce stadium have Pursuit of Excellence complained about noise and excessive National Funeral Directors Association traffic during the festival weekend. “Those
Medeiros further explained the process, “When we get to about 7 or 8 groups to choose from, we narrow it down to 3 groups and then we go with the majority,” he says. Medeiros then went on to say, “I am really excited about having Dennis DeYoung: The Music of Styx this year, but it was hotly debated within the committee,

It is because of this festival that we are able to give to charities and kids and we can help to make things happen. I think they miss the point.” Of course, one of the other great traditions about the Heritage Festival has always been its great pricing, and this year is no exception! A weekend pass is only $20. Medeiros put it in perspective, “If you look around at other festivals in this state, we are very competitive! For $20 you can come here for the whole weekend! Geez, I pay $20 just to get my car washed!” he said.
