30th Heritage Festival Extended to 4 Days Thirty years and counting. This event has succeeded in continually bringing enjoyment to East Providence by presenting fun activities and entertainment. The Heritage Festival is a 4day outdoor food and music festival now in its 30th year. It is held on the next to the last weekend in July at Pierce Stadium in East Providence, RI. Heritage will celebrate its 30th anniversary in July of 2010 and the festival will be extended to four days-July 15-18. Heritage Festival prides itself on showcasing the arts in a family oriented environment. Over the past 29 years it has presented hundreds of artists in all genres of the performing arts. Both our community and our state have been enriched by the festival’s cross-cultural platform. This event provides a wonderful opportunity for all age groups to celebrate our own musical heritage as well as to experience in an atmosphere of camaraderie the music, cuisine and artistry of other lands thereby gaining a greater understanding of the common threads that unite us. Mark Fanelli’s Traveling Amusement Park, has become a festival fixture and will bring many rides, games and specialty food booths to the baseball field. This year there is a mixture of old and new vendors, from merchandise to information, as well as many food vendors who have become regulars at the Heritage Fest. As enjoyable as the Stadium shows are, many attending just visit the booths, field tent shows and amusements and spend the day meeting old friends and browsing. Festival number 30 should be among the best of these events, with a new mixture of entertainment, arts and crafts, amusements and food.

Rumford Lions Booth

The Rumford Lions have taken part in the Festival for each of its 30 years, selling homemade clam ca kes and chowder.

Clamcakes and Chowder are a New England summertime favorite. So what could be a better combination than the Lions booth featuring the club’s special recipe for New England clam chowder and clamcakes. The Rumford Lions have been at the Festival every year since the event’s start in 1980. The club has helped thousands of East Providence residents over the years through its many charities, as well as people all over the world with Lions Club programs in providing free glasses and eye care. Locally the club presents scholarships annually to deserving students in the community as another charitable effort. The Rumford Lions booth is always a busy place during the festival, not only for the delicious clamcakes and chowder, but the great conversation from many community-spirited club members. Orders are also packed to go, to bring home for a late night snack.

The Blushing Brides The World’s Most Dangerous Tribute to The Rolling Stones Performs Friday July 16 at 7:30 & 9:30 in the Field Tent

Billing themselves as “the world’s most dangerous tribute to the music of the Rolling Stones,” Canada’s The Blushing Brides, featuring Mick Jagger look- and sound-alike Maurice Raymond, takes the stage at Pierce Field July 16 for the East Providence Heritage Festival.

On their web site, this group is described as more “daring” and “sexually-charged” than the Rolling Stones touring today, so what they do from their combination of Stones and original songs should be something not seen at every concert. As the band formed, signed record contracts, broke apart and reformed in various configurations for more than 30 years, their music selection was honed and refined. They come to this point in their journey noted for Stones songs that yet have a bit of The Blushing Brides’ own spin to them., as well as some of their own creations When playing Brides’ clips such as Honky Tonk Woman and Brown Sugar, for moments you may well think you are listening to the Stones. Then an unexpected riff here or a change in tone from the lead singer Raymond there, and you realize you are hearing what the group calls “interpreters” of Rolling Stones music, not so much people trying to produce note-fornote copies.

East ProvidEncE HEritagE FEstival 2010

Having played mostly in the Toronto area in Canada during their early years, The Blushing Brides’ reputation for a good show has grown enough that the band now also books concerts all over Northeastern America. Their concert should be an event worth seeing. The Blushing Brides are scheduled to perform inthe Field Tent at 7:30PM and 9:30, Friday night, July 16.

Dilisen on violin is from Turkey, Ignacio Long on the bass is Argentinian; and Bruno Esrubilsky on drums was born in Brazil. The men have studied music at Boston’s more prestigious music schools and have now released a second instrumental album called The Hereness and Nowness of Things, to critical acclaim. Esthema’s music is laced with an unusual blend of Eastern European and Middle Eastern influences, including the use of the oud and bouzouki. Tunes are both melodious and unexpected, in the confluence of instruments and changing tempos, and bear names such as Apart from the Rest (also the title of their first album), Eastern Dance, Arrhythmia and Illusion of Truth. The band members give homage to rock and jazz music too, but their sound seems a unique melange and is aptly placed in the World Fusion category. Andy Milas says of his role in Esthema: “I am a person that loves to listen to Progressive Rock and Metal, New Age, Jazz, Greek and Middle Eastern music and tries to bring all the elements together as a composer and a guitarist…Esthema is my attempt to take everything I know and love about music and fuse it into one. I sincerely hope everyone enjoys.” If you want to hear parts of the songs Esthema are likely to perform on the 17th, you can listen to audio samples from their two albums at www.esthema. com. With their extensive training and experience, and judging by their posted samples, Esthema should deliver an interesting and musically satisfying concert at the Heritage Festival. All ages are welcome at their performance.

Viva Quetzal Brings South American Sounds to East Prov. This group of six men from North and South America, formerly known as just Quetzal, produce colorful, lively and very beautiful music. Their sound has been variously called Andean folklore, Afro-Andean and World music, but it is unique, full of unusual sounds made from some instruments unheard of in North America. The instruments played by the band members indicate the range of music they can and do play. Joe Belmont plays classical and electric guitar and is adjunct faculty in music at several New England colleges, including Dartmouth. Robert Clavijo, from Chile, who was in the folklore group Guamary, plays quenas, zamponas, charango, Venezuelan cuatro (a small four-string guitar) and sings vocals. Juan “Manolo” Vazquez, from Puerto Rico, has a long history of skillful playing of bass guitar. Jon Weeks plays flute, saxophone, wind synth, quena, congas and small percussion instruments, and has a background performing in Latin, jazz and rock bands. Trained initially in the classical violin, Jeff Nissenbaum is the group’s beat-pounding drummer. Abraham “Abe” Sanchez of Venezuela plays the cuatro, keyboard and vocals. Many of the group’s members have performed for 20 years all over the world and teach music at New England schools now, and the creative training and artistry shows in their music. Viewers of their concerts report the live show sounds as good as the albums.

Much of the music on this group’s most recent album, Hijos del Sol (Children of the Sun) contains riffs that make you want to get up and dance, and there are also soulful, poignant sounds, as from the track In the Kingdom of the Condors. Viva Quetzal takes the stage at the East Providence Heritage Festival for an outdoor concert in Pierce Field between 6PM -7:30PM on July 17. Judging from the tracks available for listening at amazon. com, this concert will be a must-be-there performance. Come ready to dance.

BEYOND BLONDE combines classic rock, blues rock, alternative rock, and original rock with soul driven lyrics and a female front. Together since 2002 and opening for artists such as Joan Jett, John Butcher Axis, James Montgomery, Joey Mulland of Bad Finger and performing with Steven Tyler. The band combines originals and covers of male artists such as Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, and Lenny Kravitz, as well as female artists such as Blonde, Heart, and Joan Jett with a Beyond Blonde twist that brings you an awesome show and nothing less. As for seriously impressive accomplishments, or good old fashioned bragging rights, this Rhode Island treasure has it all locked in! Consider the following stats: Beyond Blonde was nominated for “Best Band of the Year” and “Best Female Vocalist of the Year” with Limelight Magazine 2008. They were also nominated for “Best Live Act” 2008, by Motif Magazine; was an Emergenza Music Festival Semi-Finalists in 2004; and an End Zone Battle of the Bands finalist in 2004. In addition to being the opening act for The Spinners, at this years’ E.P. Heritage Festival, Beyond Blonde opened for Joan Jett and The Blackhearts at the Sunset Music Festival in June 2007, and did backing vocals for Steven Tyler of Aerosmith at Music for Middlesex I, 2003. Lead singer Lisa Markovich describes the band as “... a fun, energetic, entertaining, classic rock, blues rock, alternative, and original rock band.” She further explains, “In a nut shell, we’ve been around since 2003, cut a CD, toured and opened for some great bands. We have played many venues in the New England area. There’s a lot more to know about Beyond Blonde, and the best way to experience it is live.” BEYOND BLONDE Members are Lisa Markovich - Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Mick Coste - Drums, William “Suekey” Sukeforth - lead guitar, lead and backing vocals, and Mike “KAZ” Kaczmarczyk - Bass. The band has released 2 CD’s, and has regular radio airplay throughout New England.

Two original band members -- Henry Fambrough and Bobbie Smith -- are now joined by Jessie Robert Peck, Charlton Washington and Marvin Taylor to produce the rhythm & blues and pop hits that dominated music charts in the 1970s. Audiences will hear everpopular oldies like Could It Be I’m Falling in Love, Then Came You, and The Rubber Band Man. Although original falsetto vocalist Philippe Wynne has passed away, Bobbie Smith and other band members produce sound-the-same renditions of the songs that make audiences joyfully sing and dance along. The Spinners’ versatility and mass appeal are evident when you find the group’s sound is listed under all the following headings in reference guides: soul, rhythm & blues, pop, Motown, disco. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of the online All Music Guide explains part of The Spinners’ ongoing allure: “At Atlantic Records, the Spinners worked with producer Thom Bell who gave the group a lush, seductive sound, complete with sighing strings, a tight rhythm section, sultry horns, and a slight funk underpinning. Wynne quickly emerged as a first-rate soul singer, and the combination of the group’s harmonies, Wynne’s soaring leads, and Bell’s meticulous production made the Spinners the most popular soul group of the ‘70s. Once the group signed with Atlantic, they became a veritable hit machine, topping the R&B and pop charts with songs like “I’ll Be Around…” Over the years, The Spinners have produced the occasional new hit, or received a renewed wave of interest because they worked with other artists like El-

ton John and Dionne Warwick. But it is their early repertoire of songs that has continued to make them a draw to audiences all over the country, many of whom are immersed in happy nostalgia when they hear the familiar sounds. The current formation of The Spinners continues their tradition of skillful harmonizing and music that’s both fun to sway to and easy to listen to, for everyone. This featured attraction of the Heritage Festival music line-up should be well worth the cost of admission.

ATLAS SOUL

If you are looking for music that is totally new and refreshing yet somehow wonderfully familiar, you owe it to yourself to check out this dynamic band! Atlas Soul’s live performances are unique in that they automatically engage the audience in a cross-cultural music experience, which of course, is perfect for the E.P. Heritage Festival. They incorporate elements of jazz, funk, and rock, with North African and Middle Eastern traditional melodies and grooves. Wow! No stranger to participating in or “strutting their stuff” in national and/or international song contests, Atlas Soul has won or been finalists in nearly every song contest they have entered.

Here is what Banning Eyre (Afropop Worldwide) has to say about Atlas Soul: “What hits hardest about Atlas Soul’s sound is the natural funk of North African music and also powerful vocals, which span fluid, passionate Gnawa melodies and husky Raï hooks.” Admittedly, this description may sound a little confusing to you right now, but when you hear this band, you will get it! Simply because unless you have lived in Europe or have been into North African World Music, you have probably never heard anything like this, and yet everywhere they play, they conquer the audience with their first tune. Global Rhythm Magazine has this to say about the band, ”Atlas Soul’s blend of jazz, funk and Middle-Eastern/Arabic grooves is a fascinating sonic stew that will catch any listener’s ear. We like ’em, and you will too!” Atlas Soul has performed as some very impressive venues including the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center, in Washington, D.C., the Festival International de Louisiane, the Houston International Festival, Musikfest, the FNX/Boston Phoenix Jazz Series, the Boston Globe Jazz Festival, the Old Time School of Music in Chicago, and many, many more. They have released 4 CDs, and their latest album, entitled “MAKTOUB”, which means “Destined”, is the 8th annual Independent Music Awards Finalist in world fusion.

Draw The Line Aerosmith Tribute

If you love Aerosmith, undoubtedly you will also love tribute band Draw The Line, since according to Aerosmith, and Aerosmith fans alike, these bands are practically one and the same! Disc jockey Nick Carter, of rock radio station 104.1 WBCN in Boston, puts it simply, “I’ve seen Draw The Line! They ARE Aerosmith!” Hailing from Boston, Mass., (just like Aerosmith, by the way), Draw The Line is the only endorsed Aerosmith tribute band. In fact, during a January 1998 interview, Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler singled out Draw The Line as the best of the Aerosmith tribute bands. They are also the only tribute band who has been featured on the Official Aerosmith Website, as well as that of Aerosmith’s Official Fan Club. And, not only do they sound like Aerosmith, there is an uncanny resemblance between Draw The Line lead singer Neill Byrnes and with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler. So much so, that Byrnes won a Steven Tyler look-alike contest on Boston radio station 107.3 WAAF. Even MTV agrees to the easily mistaken identity of Steven Tyler, so MTV invited Neill to fly to New York so they could film his magical impersonation for a promotional video. The group’s fanatical popularity was evident the evening of January 1, 1999, when it played at the former Mama Kins Music Hall in Boston in front of a sold out crowd of 800. Among other famous faces at that show was Steven Tyler’s daughter, model Mia Tallarico. Tyler quoted his daughter the next day as saying, “Dad, have you seen this? From where I was standing, I couldn’t believe how much they (Draw The Line) looked and sounded just like you!” With support and accolades from Aerosmith themselves, as well as journalists, top DJs, and fans worldwide, its no wonder that Draw The Line is recognized as a one-of-a-kind tribute band. “A professional show band in a league of their own amongst tribute acts, and of a caliber that is unparalleled

Bring your appetites to Pierce Field for the Heritage Festival, because the menu of available food is terrific. If you are a festival “veteran,” you probably already have a good idea of the vendors you’ll visit – although likely you’ll make sure you’ve checked out all the new ones this year. You can be sure of one thing; the festival has quality vendors, many of whom have been returning for years. You’ll find traditional fair and festival treats, as well as many ethnic foods to be enjoyed. A picnic area will be set up on the baseball field so you can take time out to sit down, be cool under the umbrella, and bring your sandwich or fries to enjoy. Most of the vendors will be open late all four nights so you can have a snack or late supper. They’ll package stuff so you can bring it from the field to the stadium to enjoy during the night shows, too. There will be a beer and wine tent on the baseball field and stands set up for beer and wine and soft drinks in the Stadium. As usual, there will be a good variety of food booths to select from, both for sandwiches and plates, as well as great snack food from popcorn and ice cream to a cup of coffee and a doughboy.

Kissnation NY’s Best KISS Tribute

Are you ready for this?! You had better be, because this is a show you don’t want to miss! KISSNATION arrives onstage in a powerful explosion of lights, sound, costumes, KISS music and theatrics, that will literally take your breath away! KISSNATION is one of the world’s most renowned KISS tribute bands. Based out of New York City, which is the same city that brought the world KISS, KISSNATION has been on the tribute scene for nearly a decade. The band sets themselves apart from other KISS tribute bands by doing things a little differently. Not only do they perform songs from KLASSIC 70’s KISS, but also, KISS music of the 80’s and 90’s. In Photo by Philip Moy Photography fact, they perform any KISS song of any era, regardless if it’s from the “Make-up” or “Non Make-up” years. In an interview with Beth of Fox News, KISSNATION lead singer and bass man Carlos Espada puts it like this, “ Rappoport, DeGiovanni & Caslowitz, Inc. We have the willingness to do what others will pretend to do. It’s like 989 Waterman Avenue, East Providence, RI 02914-1314 playing dress up when you were a Attorneys at Law kid. KISSNATION is the people’s band, we never feel that we are Stephen M. Rappoport* above anyone and we keep in touch Jack R. DeGiovanni, Jr.* with a lot of KISS fans who come to our shows.” He went on to explain, Andrew S. Caslowitz “The first thing I did when I wanted Sonja L. Deyoe* to start a tribute band was set my * Also Members Massachusetts Bar band apart. I tried out for bands and they all did the same old stuff. Love Gun outfits and no song past Concentrating in Workers' Compensation, 1977, which I thought was lame. I Personal Injury & Social Security Disability Cases knew then that playing in someone else’s band was not for me. I needed my own band that would break all 989 Waterman Avenue, Lower Level the unwritten laws of KISS tribute East Providence, RI 02914 bands. It’s crazy to stick to one era of KISS, when there’s over 30 years (401) 437-3000 of music. East Providence Heritage Festival 2010

Hola, amigos! Mariachi music is coming to the E.P. Heritage Festival this year!!

If you’ve never heard mariachi music and want to check it out, experts say Mariachi Palenque is the very best, and the only authentic live mariachi band in New England! But, what exactly is mariachi music, you may be asking yourself? Good question! Mariachi is a genre of music that originated in Guadalajara, Mexico, and is an integration of stringed instruments highly influenced by the cultural impacts of the historical development of Western Mexico. (In other words, it’s a really, really cool, kind of folksy and traditional type of Mexican music! You know the type!) Got it? Good! Ok, so let me introduce you to the members of Mariachi Palenque… Co-director Roberto Rivas, Jr. is a self-taught guitarist and violinist. He has been playing mariachi music since 1992. Rivas has performed for three sitting presidents: President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush, and President Ernesto Zedillo of Mexico. Co-Director Ana Lisa Portillo (vihuela - voice) is a classically-trained violinist who has performed with symphony orchestras in New Mexico, New York, and Massachusetts. Julie Metcalf (violin - voice) is a violinist and violist who first picked up the violin at age four. Metcalf also studied classical violin at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts. continued on page 34

East Providence Battle Monument Foundation

This year be sure to visit the East Providence Battle Monument Foundation booth, Established in 2001, the purpose of this foundation is to keep the current monuments clean and in good repair so they are not destroyed by the elements. They also try to move some monuments to make them more visible, like the World War II monument in Riverside Square. Future plans include a parking lot and an area designated for all the memorials. Their proposed location is near the Henderson or “Red Bridge near Massasoit Avenue. They hope to build new memorials for Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan veterans in the future. The group goal is to preserve and restore the memorials of the city. The East Providence Battle Monument Foundation will be collecting donations at The Heritage Festival. Kevin defines perseverance. After eleven X Games appearances and three bronze medals, Kevin finally had his dream season in 2006 when he took home two gold medals from X Games 12. In the BMX Vert Best Trick competition Kevin made history when he became the first to land the fabled double flair (two back flips with a 180 degree twist). Two days later at X Games he took his second gold medal in the inaugural BMX Big Air event. In 2007 Kevin added to his X Games medal collection a Bronze in BMX Vert and a Gold in BMX Big Air. He also took the honor of “Athlete of the Games”. Kevin’s most recent accomplishment was the Red Bull Experiment. In May of 2010 Kevin announced the K-Rob Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children in his hometown of East Providence, Rhode Island. With all his success on his bike, Kevin’s most important role is being a family man. Kevin is a devoted husband to Robin and father of two.
