Elections Bring Changes to EP (But Budget Commission Still Boss)

2012 Holiday Guide Turn to page 55

By Bob Rodericks The political dust has settled after East Providence’s November elections with expected new faces and only one upset. But one constant remains obvious - the state budget commission has the real authority over most city matters. The budget commission will remain in effect until it is abolished by the state director of revenue. The biggest remaining hurdle for the commission appears to be how the city funds its’ pension system. Commissioners have stated that the city has not made its’ obligation to properly fund the system for close to 11 years. While a good chunk of the prior deficit has been whittled away, commission members have told city officials that future councils will still have to deal with projected deficits and spending problems. The lone election upset saw incumbent Mayor Bruce Rogers defeated by newcomer Helder J. Cunha in a Ward 2 race. Cunha received 1770 votes to 1475 for Rogers. Rogers had worked hard and won a decisive primary victory in June but lost handily in the November election. Rogers had support from fellow councilman Thomas Rose but did not enjoy support from some key East Providence legislators. In Ward 3, Rose easily defeated Candace Seel with 2050 votes to Seels’1491 count. In a fairly active Ward 1 clash, James A. Briden defeated Edward Lynch by a close 2434 to 2055 margin. The campaign featured lots of action and Briden may have benefitted from his constant involvement at city meetings opposing the controversial pond view company. Ward 4 has a new face also as outgoing school committee member Chrissy Rossi ran unopposed for the Ward 4 city council seat. Another newcomer was Tracy Adams Capobianco who trounced former school committee member Steve Santos with 9423 votes to Santos 5423 votes for the citywide at large seat. continued on page...

East Providence News Briefs By Bob Rodericks

EP Democrats Divided

Democrats in Rhode Island and East Providence overwhelmingly elected their candidates, but many divisions still exist. The East Providence Democratic City Committee seemed to have many individual victories on election day in November but remains splintered. For the first time in about 30 years the official democratic headquarters was not housed at the Philips Street Hall in the Saint Francis neighborhood. Party chairman John Faria held fort at the Santa Maria club on North Broadway. Other democrats like State Senator Dan DaPonte and Representative Helio Melo and their supporters remained at Philips Street. Mayor Bruce Rogers, Ward 3 councilman Tom Rose, former Representative Bob DaSilva and others were at Santa Maria club for election results. New school board member Joel Monteiro joined with new city council member Tracy Capobianco to host a headquarters at the Cape Verdean Progressive Center on Grosvenor avenue and Democrat Representative Gregg Amore had his own headquarters in Riverside. Amore did not receive the party endorsement but appears to be well accepted by party members. After the election several of the regular Democrats left their Santa Maria headquarters and meandered over to Philips Street to break bread. Most who attended had to be “pushed” to do so and the democratic divide still exists. One of the party’s “movers and shakers” is Charlene Damiani, Chairman of Ward 4 (Riverside) democrats. Damiani and city chairman John Faria are at odds. In fact, most of the Ward 4 membership will not attend regular city committee meetings because of Faria. Several in Ward 2 are also at odds with party leadership. Sources have indicated that former school board member and newly elected Ward 4 councilman Chrissy Rossi was interested in occupying the ceremonial Mayor’s

seat. Initially it was thought that she had the support on the new council to achieve becoming the city’s first female Mayor. However it now appears that newcomer James Briden (Ward 1) will be named Mayor after Ward 3 councilman Tom Rose split from Rossi to support Briden. Briden has received support during the election from former council members Joe Larisa and Bob Cusack. Rose has indicated a desire to “move forward and put party politics behind us. Let’s concentrate on doing what is best for our residents.”

Four Year Terms Are Back

Quietly winning approval in the recent election is the charter change which would give school committee and city council members four year terms instead of the current two year term. Since the East Providence charter was developed, council members served two years and school committee members were elected for four year terms. While city council members were always elected by wards with one atlarge, the school committee used to elect all five members at-large for the four year terms. The Rogers - led council supported the issue as a referendum question for the public to decide this past November. Voters overwhelmingly supported four year terms. Although election reformers were adamantly against this provision, many believe that petty political bickering is less prevalent when elected officials have more time to conduct city business while spending less time “campaigning”. Many who served in the past on the school committee thought that politics was less evident before - “you didn’t have to worry about campaigning until the end of your third year. Now it seems like these people (school board and city councilors) are campaigning every year,” said a veteran former elected official. However

those against this provision say that four years is too long to give someone and too long to wait to vote that person out of office should voters be upset. The adding of ward elections to the school committee was seen as a way to guarantee that every city ward would have representation on the school committee. Before that change several years ago, all five school board seats were at large. Even though there was a natural trend to include all neighborhoods, it wasn’t assured. Critics claim it has fostered a “my school mentality” with some elected officials caring mostly about schools in their immediate neighborhood and not “even educational policies for all schools in the city.” These new changes are not effective now and will take place with the next election cycle.

Elections Bring Changes to EP (But Budget Commission Still Boss)

By Bob Rodericks The school committee will have a totally new make-up with 5 new members. The only incumbent seeking re-election - Steven Furtado, Ward 2 - was defeated by newcomer Anthony Ferreira. Ferreira received 1725 votes while Furtado’s tally was 1132. Ferreira received backing from Mayor Rogers and some other candidates. In a big win, Joel Monteiro defeated Ronald Warr for the at-large seat by a 10596 to 3950 vote margin. In Ward 1 Elizabeth Clupny won over Betty BJ DeCrescenzo, with 2129 votes to 1876. Richard Pimentel, Ward 3 and Tim Conley, Ward 4, both were unopposed. The races for the RI State House continued to stay fairly democratic. In the House of Representatives District 65 race, first time candidate Gregg Amore, Democrat, received 3898 votes while former councilman Joseph Botelho, a Moderate garnered 1862 votes. In the House District 63 race, new Democrat Katherine Kazarian defeated Independent David Sullivan by a 4227 to 1816 margin. Incumbent Joy Hearn, Democrat, received 1063 to Republican Manfred Diel’s 695 votes. Independent Eugene Saveory received 570 votes. Senator Daniel DaPonte, District 14, and new Senator Bill Conley, District 18 were unopposed in their campaigns. DaPonte won a hotly contested primary battle over former Democratic Representative, Bob DaSilva. Representative Helio Melo, District 64, was also unopposed. DaPonte and Melo are General Assembly finance chairs for the senate and house respectively.

Congratulations

Congratulations to the Rhode Island delegation and the President on their victories on Election Day. The American dream has been fundamentally transformed from hard work and achievement to government “benefits” and cultural rot. Now that we’ve reelected the problem in order to fix the problem, will the problem get fixed? Who will be to blame now that our post-partisan President is about to inherit a worse economy from himself than from his predecessor? Who will be to blame when Obamacare tax increases force the private sector to shed more jobs? Who will be to blame when the federal government confiscates your tax return if you don’t enter into a private contract with a health insurance company? Who will be to blame when your doctor needs to get permission from the bureaucrats at the “healthcare advisory board” (death panel) to see if your worthy of treatment for cancer cells created by your medicinal pot smoke? Who will be to blame when your children, at 35 years old are in your basement playing video games instead of working to pay taxes to fund your beloved “benefits.” Who will be to blame when you’re paying $7 a gallon for gas thanks to “quantitative easing” (dollar manipulation)by the fed to monetize this monstrous debt created solely by the millionaires in congress not the ones in the private sector. Congratulations Mr. President and Rhode Island delegation. Your academic experiment worked. You’ve successfully divided us and conquered us by making it more appealing and comfortable to be in poverty than to earn a living. As a man of faith I pray for my country. Prepare ladies and gentlemen, this is not going to be pretty. Steven Andrade, Riverside

Thank You District 65

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of District 65 for entrusting me with the honor of representing their interests in the RI General Assembly for the next two years. I am grateful to the many people who allowed me into their homes, shared their ideas and asked such thoughtful questions. I learned a great deal as I walked the district and I will carry that information with me each day that I serve. I would also like to thank my primary opponents, Jim Miller and Tim Chapman, and my general election opponent, Joe Botelho, for conducting positive, issues oriented campaigns. I admire their commitment to our community and I look forward to their counsel going forward. I offer my heartfelt thanks to my family, friends, former students and supporters who worked so very hard on my behalf. I am humbled by your support and confidence and I will work hard each day to keep it. I wish all the people of East Providence a happy and safe holiday season. As 2013 approaches, I look forward to working on your behalf in order to make our city and state a better place to work and live. Please contact me at any time with your questions or concerns. Let's Preserve East Providence

Although a village with condos would be a great improvement to oil tank fields along the East Providence waterfront, I wonder if leaving it and or Kettle Point as open space would be an even better idea. Our town needs a nice big park like Slater, Colt State, Goddard or Roger Williams. Maybe a windfarm could help with the cost. East Providence already has plenty of houses for sale and empty storefronts that need filling without building more. Between that and the current danger of building so close to the water (Sabins Point was under water in the last hurricane), I think it is a good idea to preserve the little bit of nature we have left in East Providence. Lynch Congratulates His Opponent, Jim Briden

Ed Lynch, recent candidate for Ward I City Council, would like to congratulate Jim Briden, his opponent who won the council seat on November 6. Lynch stated, “It was a great campaign, but his opponent got the job done to get elected. I wish him the best of luck in his new undertaking. We both worked very hard, and he succeeded. I concentrated on going door-to-door for weeks, targeting over 900 seniors who turned out to vote for me with many other people in Ward I. My eyes will be wide open for the next two years, and I hope the people elected can finally get along with each other for the sake of the citizens of the city. The past two years have been very upsetting to me and many other East Providence constituents, especially when there were two council people sitting at meetings with such sad-looking faces. I am one person that seldom quits. In 1990 I was defeated by nine votes as your state representative, and I came back in two years and won by 800 votes, because the voters knew that they had made a mistake. Like General MacArthur once said, “I shall return.” So, let’s get Pond View cleaned up once and for all, which seems to be one of the major concerns of Rumford. I also hope that the newly-elected city council can work together and start a new commission with capable business people and with someone from the workforce to bring in business to East Providence. We currently have many empty buildings in the city, and by giving new businesses tax breaks and perks, we can conceivably bring jobs into East Providence. Finally, I just want to thank all the people who supported me in this election. I hope everything works out for East Providence during the next two years. Thank you, Ed Lynch.” Edward Lynch

The people have chosen and again, like a battered spouse afraid to listen to reason, we voted citywide for the entitlement at every level, strapping a yolk on the neck the next few generations. We have casted ourselves; drones to an evolving class never desired by our founders; a class of those who have learned to leverage our apathy, lack of will, knowledge and awareness, and gullibility. Historically, the only people who cherish their liberties are ultimately those who realize that they are about to lose them. I truly believe that most every one of us loves our town, state and country. I believe we cherish our rights, but apparently fail to recognize with absolute clarity the dangers facing our way of life and standard of living, our economy, our City Charter and the U.S. Constitution. These threats have come from irresponsible and group-minded charlatans currently holding sway in city, state and federal government. We repeatedly fail to correctly identify them as the arrogant and corrupt activists they are. We deny the actuality that they seek to aid their allies for selfish gain, in accordance with clandestine motive, foreign principles and ideals that are the antithesis of the educated, representative self-government we were entrusted with. East Providence is duped into voting for this at every level from the School Committee to the Oval Office. I so hope that we see the precious gift entrusted to these politicians being whittled away by the egocentric and unprincipled who presume to govern not by the just, honestly obtained consent of the governed, but by their own private and dangerous ambitions, but as of early November, I hold doubt.

December 2012 The Reporter Perhaps as the clouds darken, city meetings will be attended by a wider cross-section of the community; of people who had never attended such a meeting before, who never thought that they would need to, who are frightened yet motivated. Those of you who have bothered to read this far may indeed be the only holders of the lamp, because we have passed the point where anyone else, past or future can help us. We are utterly on our own, the stewards and the keepers of the legacy and gifts of the Founders. Like it or not, it is our duty not to fail, for the consequences are too appalling to tolerate, yet we are well on our way. I imagine the voices of the founders; Thomas Jefferson, Roger Williams, and perhaps the founders of our city, too numerous to mention, are calling across the years, beseeching us to understand their toiling. This is why we the taxpayers – not just “Townies”, must never fail to protect the foundations of this city, and with it, this state and this nation; a unique and universally-envied system of self-government. If we do not heed, I suppose their spirits will repent, aggrieved at having made the efforts they did. Steve Gerling Riverside

Re: The East Providence Reporter (November, 2012 Let’s Be Honest)

I would like to not only agree with the writer’s remarks but raise them to a higher level! Slowly eliminating the Homestead Exemption for hard earned tax paying LEGAL RESIDENT HOME OWNERS to raise EXTRA TAX REVENUE, flies in the face of being Borderline IMMORAL DISCRIMINATION...IF NOT DOWNRIGHT UNCONSTITUTIONAL! WHY??? What about the OUT OF TOWN property owners who enjoy their income from rental property/ies yet DON’T HAVE TO PAY the EXTRA increase in revenue??? What about the SNOW BIRD property owner who enjoys his “claim to living in East Providence” yet in reality claims his AUTO ADDRESS to be OUT OF STATE in order to NOT PAY East Providence auto property taxes AT ALL??? We as LEGAL RESIDENT homeowners are being charged an UN-PROPORTIONAL amount of property taxes by having this exemption taken away from us. YES!!! IT IS A TAX INCREASE!!! AN UNFAIR, UN-PROPORTIONAL THEREFORE UNCONSTITUTIONAL TAX INCREASE AND THEREFORE SHOULD BE CHALLENGED AS SUCH!!! AND..IF found to be UNCONSTITUTIONAL...should be CREDITED BACK TO EACH AND EVERY LEGAL HOMESTEAD EXEMPT RESIDENT!!! Oops...Now what happens to the City of East Providence and all the tax revenue that they need and now have to pay back and the city is broke again??? ALL THE GOOD OLD BOY TOWNIE CROOKS PAST AND PRESENT WHO GOT US THERE SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE AND THAT SHOULD BE THEIR PROBLEM...even if it means either reclaiming the lost revenues from the above mentioned NON-Homestead Exempt East Providence Taxpayers by charging them the make up...oops... UNCONSTITUTIONAL BY RHODE ISLAND STATE TAX LAW WHICH IS THE REASON WHY THIS IS AN ISSUE OR..HAVE TO DECLARE East Providence BANKRUPT to do it!!! TOWNIE PRIDE MY FOOT!!! Paul Maziarz Riverside

Local Landmark Gets Facelift

The American Legion Post 10 in Riverside has undergone an amazing rejuvenation. Thanks to local volunteers as well as local businesses that provided monetary support and materials, they were able to strip and wax the floors, freshen up the paint and deep clean the aging post just in time for Veterans Day. The club’s fresh new look however, did not take away from the original resolve of this great American post. Volunteers were careful to preserve all of the photos of the past commanders and the placards from other posts across the country. These keepsakes were put right back up where they came from as this is a proud club with deep history. At Post 10, one thing is certain; don’t let the fresh paint on these old walls fool you. If they could talk, oh the stories they could tell you! This decades old building has been a local meeting spot for generations and has hosted scores of events over the years. In addition to the annual Memorial Day Parade, the Legion has hosted multitudes of fundraisers and coalitions as well as anniversaries, showers, weddings, birthdays and holiday parties over the years. They also run a lobster raffle every Sunday from 2:00 P.M. til 4:00 P.M. with the proceeds going to local kid’s charities. Post 10 is truly a community partner. The hall upstairs boasts seating for up to149 patrons and has a working kitchen. It’s available for rent for all types of occasions. The hall rental cost is $175 per event and for $10/hr more, you can have your own private bartender. The Reporter December 2012

From the Desk of Bruce Rogers It has been with great pleasure and humbleness that I have served this City during the past two years. My pledge when taking office in December of 2010 was to never forget the hardworking, blue collar people of our City and tonight I can stand before you and say that I never have. I have spent countless hours addressing, dealing with and responding to any issue that touched people from Rumford to Riverside and everywhere in between, and I have not regretted a second of it. I would do it all again tomorrow, and may very well have to. I have at times been criticized for interfering with the activities around City Hall, but that’s ok. Sometimes I had to in order to get things done. This City needs a lot of work in the employee training and customer service departments and I now leave that all to the new Mayor and the new City Council to deal with. Before the Budget Commission leaves, the budget will be balanced 5 years out and East Providence now needs to present itself as a business friendly community so as to take the tax burden off the backs of the hardworking homeowners. East Providence should list all available vacant buildings and available properties both City and privately owned in order to help boost the economy and assist our residents. The City also needs to assist existing businesses to thrive as well as offer help and incentives for new businesses to relocate here. I will assist anyone, either elected or within the City’s employment to reach these goals. During these tough economic times our City needs to encourage and support programs and events that are of little or no cost to the taxpayers such as Winterfest, Watchemocket Square Day, Labor Day Parade, Community Gardens, Carousel Events, Playground Reconstruction, Adopt-An-Island, Tranquility Place Upgrade, Heritage Days, Library Activities and yes Food Banks so Providing quality service since 1977 as to create an atmosphere of camaraderie and good feeling and re-establish this City as the All American City it once was as well as to strengthen our “Townie” roots and increase that Pride. We have in our City, the fifth largest City in the State. I am available for All Your Plumbing & Heating Needs and willing to assist in any of these activities without being asked. I want to thank the City Manager and the City employees, esconvert from Oil to gas pecially those who live here for their dedication and hard work on behalf of the people and also for putting up with me for two years. and qualify for National Grid Rebate Program I want to thank the City Council - Katie, Tommy, Billy and Mike who served honorably and with much commitment. They have an uphill battle as we did two years ago when taking office and I wish them the best of luck. I pledge to assist, encourage and advise each and every one of them either individually or as a group if they so desire. Welcome back Tommy and welcome Tracy, Chrissy, Jim and Helder, your job is not an easy one. And finally and most importantly, I wish to thank and offer my continued support to the 47,000 residents of our City for your “Our Focus Cutting Edge Technology patients while dealing with flooding, hurricanes, fires, unavoidable is Premier Eyecare costly lawsuits, near financial disaster and the mandates placed On You” Distinct Eyewear on all of us by the ever present Budget Commission. We have endured, we are stronger for it, we will survive and we will thrive toward success. I will continue to be available to assist any resident or business owner within our City limits in any way I can. I am a Townie and have lived here all my life and will continue to do so for a long time more. I love this City and I love its people. Eighteen (18) new clients were able to be seen within the walk-in model during the first two weeks, and the longest wait time was one (1) hour. Four (4) more clients were expected for appointments, but unfortunately Hurricane Sandy prevented them from coming into the Center that day. All were rescheduled shortly thereafter. Townie Brothers Share History & Culture of Local “First People”

Part Two “We Took The First Hit”

By Gina Wesley-Silva Continuing with Part Two of our 3 part series on the culture of local Native Americans, brothers Harry “The Hawk,” and Lee “Braveheart” Edmonds, explained more about the results of first contact between Natives and the Europeans who emigrated to the Over 20 years experience US in the 1600’s. Come in for your Holiday The first thing Hawk and Braveheart explained was how Northeastern tribes, were forcibly “assimilated” into the settlers’ culture, Shellac™Pedicure & Receive which was a culture that was very different from their own. “We a Complimentary Mini took the first hit,” said Hawk, “When the explorers and settlers from Manicure at time of service Ask about our Europe came over, they landed here, in New England, and took Sherri Grams Gift Certificates Available over. So, it was particularly difficult in this part of the country to keep our culture going,” he said. Braveheart explained further, “The Northeast woodlands people were forced, literally at gunpoint, to adopt the white man’s ways. Specializing in Haircutting & Contemporary Color And, that is how we eventually lost our own culture and traditions,” he said. New Client Special Buy 2 Gift Certificates for Hawk continued, “Yes, and this was different than what hapReceive $25 Complimentary the Holidays & Receive pened to tribes out west. The Western tribes were forced off their lands and put on reservations. That was terrible too, but they at least a $25 Complimentary Gift Certificate to use at stayed together, and so were able to keep more of their language Gift Certificate second appointment and culture intact. We were also forced off our lands, or robbed of them, but we had to move to other areas, that the whites had already established in, to survive,” he concluded. We then discussed that that is not exactly how our history books Like us on record it. Braveheart said, “Think about it, if you apply common sense to what is written in many history books, you can see that most of it is not true. Why would the Indians give up their lands, and their waterways and rivers where they had hunted and fished for thousands of generations? They wouldn’t! Our ancestors were infringed upon. Our lands, our rights, our culture, language, and traditions were all stolen from us, it’s that simple,” he said. www. .com “For a while, they could not even say they were Indian,” continued Hawk. “So, they adopted the white mans’ culture, and they married into other races, and tried to become something else, in order to just survive,” he concluded. “By the time the settlers began moving out west in the 1800’s, the western tribes knew exactly what the white man had in mind for them, and so they fought back hard,” said Hawk. We then talked about Hollywood’s Women who have migraine headaches and are depiction of Indians, which came from the overweight may be at increased risk for having popular cowboy movies of the 1950’s and 1960’s. “We were depicted as an exotic, headaches that are more frequent and severe. If strange, and scary, warlike people who you are a woman who is 18-50 years old, spoke broken English. Unfortunately, that overweight, and suffer from migraine headaches, became our image in the minds of Ameriyou may be eligible to participate in a research cans,” said Hawk. Braveheart added, “So, a big distinction study. The WHAM study is a no-cost research program that is designed between Northeastern tribes and Western to test two different behavioral treatments for reducing migraine tribes is that Western tribes actually got to headaches in overweight women. For more information, call The Miriam keep more of their culture and to tell their Hospital Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center at: own stories, unlike the Eastern tribes whose stories were largely told by colonizing (401) 793-8940. whites,” said Hawk.

The Edmonds brothers then went on to explain that the practice of eliminating Native culture was not at all by accident. “Don’t forgot, the so-called settlers, who were more precisely “invaders”, sought to steal our lands and kill us all off, to hide the crime,” said Braveheart pointedly. “One way to do that,” Hawk continued, “…is to strip the people of their culture. Over time our children were denied their true culture. We were given a foreign culture instead, which didn’t serve us at all,” he said. This idea of cultural genocide is further supported in many historical writings on those early days. Native American author Paula Gunn Allen, describes the effect of colonization on Native populations, in her book, “The Sacred Hoop.” “The coming of the white man created chaos in all the old systems, which were superbly healthy, simultaneously cooperative and autonomous, peace-centered, and ritual-oriented. The success of their systems depended on complimentary institutions and organized relationships among all sectors of their world.” “They forced their ways of life on us. They forced their religion on us too. We weren’t allowed to practice our own religion which our ancestors had practiced for thousands of years,” said Braveheart. Hawk continued, “The irony is that English settlers came here to avoid religious persecution in their own country, but they came here and persecuted the Red Man, in his country instead,” he said. “They called themselves “Christians,” and said they served God. Then they took away our identity, slaughtered us, and stole our lands,” said Hawk, then continued, “There is an old Indian saying that goes like this;” “ ‘The white man gave us the Bible, and took the land!’ ” “We didn’t follow their bible, but we knew there was a Creator,” said Braveheart. “There was a Great Spirit. The name of the Creator differed slightly from region to region, but the reverence was

y p p a s y a H olid H

December 2012 all the same. Just as today, all religions do not worship the same, and some call God by other names, but the reverence is still the same,” he said. Braveheart continued, “It was all about greed. They took what they wanted and they still have it today. Their descendants are still in power today, and the Indian is still low on the totem pole, no pun intended,” he added. Another disappointing fact that points to the cultural obliteration of Native Americans is that U.S. history does not begin with Native American history. “Our history books don’t teach anything about life on this continent prior to European exploration, and that in itself, makes it seem as though Europeans did indeed “discover” America, which is of course, is ludicrous,” said Hawk. “American children learn nothing about the great heritage on this continent prior to European contact. Yet, they are taught the early histories of other civilizations and countries in the world. It doesn’t make sense,” he said. Hawk continued, “Most people don’t even know that the great tribes in this area were all part of the same federation, which was Watchemoket. That was a village right down near what is now the end of Warren Avenue, in East Providence” he said. The brothers then explained that some aspects of Native culture did survive and were adopted by the colonizers and still exist today. They say our current form of government was adopted from the Iroquois Federation. Another explains the origins of the lullaby “Rockabye Baby.” “The Cradle Song”, was an Indian song. Indian mothers would take their cradle boards off their backs and hang them in a nearby tree, and the wind would gently rock the baby to sleep, and that is how that song came into being,” explained Hawk. I then asked if the men had passed on any of their knowledge of the culture to their children and grandchildren. Braveheart explained, “I didn’t force the culture on my children. I just planted the seed and hoped they chose to follow it one day,” he said. “Some of my kids are involved, some are not,” said Hawk. “I was not very involved myself until later in life because my parents didn’t force it on us either,” he said. Hawk added, “Braveheart and I always dress to show our ancestry. We wear earrings and necklaces, hats, and carry medicine bags, and all of that. At pow wows, when we are dressed in full regalia, sometimes people try and give us compliments and tell us they like our “costumes.” That infuriates us. We know these people mean well, but we do not wear costumes! We dress in authentic regalia, there is a big difference!” “Yes, and today when people come to pow wows from Poland or other places in the world, they always want to take pictures with us, with the “authentic Indians,” laughed Braveheart. We then began to talk about current issues facing Native Americans. I asked for their perspectives on gaming and Indian casinos. Hawk explained his viewpoint, “Today Indians have been conditioned to rely on gambling and casinos to boost the economy of their tribes to offset the extreme unemployment and poverty that is rampant on today’s reservations. Hopefully, the income from casinos can help out. It’s all about federal recognition. Tribes that are federally recognized see casinos as a quick fix. It helps with economic development for housing and schools, medical, and education,” he said. Braveheart added, “Yes, they do create jobs on the reservations. It is just sad that some people seem to think that Indians don’t deserve a better life than what they have now. It is unbelievable how horrible conditions are on some reservations today. And, gaining federal recognition is a two edged sword too. Once tribes get it, then they are forced to decide which members to keep on the rolls, and which ones to take off the rolls. The idea is to try and serve the most, and the most needy ones best, but the money can only stretch so far. It’s sad, and it further divides an already impoverished and divided people,” he concluded.

More than 275 guests attended last year’s Red White & Blues, and sampled wines and savory treats before dancing the night away at the Pell Chafee Performance Center. All proceeds go towards Trinity Rep’s artistic and educational programming. Formed in the summer of 2010, The Silks have burst onto the country blues scene in New England with ferocity and enthusiasm. Front-man and songwriter Tyler James Kelly has managed to assemble a cast of musicians with resumes consisting of The Midnight Creeps, Brown Bird, Cowgirl, and The Sugar Honey Iced Tea, and blending it into a sound that is all their own. With compliments that vary from drawing comparisons to The Rolling Stones in style and songwriting to a soundman shouting “that’s the most fun I’ve ever had!” after a show, The Silks have garnered a reputation as a band that everyone found themselves wanting to see overnight.

SPORTS UPDATE EPHS SPORTS UPDATE

By Bob Rodericks The EPHS girls volleyball team made it to the state championship game but fell short to Coventry High School. It was the second consecutive state title for Coventry. “It just wasn’t meant to be. We didn’t have it,” said EP Head Coach Alex Butler. “The team had too many hitting errors and service errors and never got in rhythm the entire night. Coventry played smart ball control volleyball and lived off our errors,” continued Butler. The game scores were 25-23, 2512, 25-13. This marks the end for”our 9 seniors; Lindsee Allienello, Leah and Hannah Drolet, Patti Laliberte, Izzy Newton, Nicole Strik, Mary Monagle, Lucianna Medici and Thomeeka Speaks. I want to thank the seniors for a great 4 years and thanks to the 2012 team for a fun season,” said an upbeat Butler after the loss. The townies had a great run leading up to the championship game. The Townies defeated Prout in a key semi-final match to earn a berth in the state finals against Coventry. EP won (23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22). “Both teams had numerous serving and hitting errors and neither could find a consistent rhythm,”said Coach Butler after the Prout match. “Lindsee Allienello and Nicole Strik picked the best time to have season highs in kills with 9, and 8 respectively. Lucianna Medici bounced back from a subpar Quarterfinal performance to steady the back row and pass consistently. This is the second year in a row that we knocked Prout from the playoffs. The Townies had defeated Coventry once during the regular season but Coventry gained some revenge during the state title match. The Townies have previously won 8 state championships in girls volleyball. All state and division individual honors were announced with EPHS doing well: Second Team All State - Mary Monagle, and Hannah Drolet; Third Team All State - Lindsee Allienello, Leah Drolet, and Lucianna Medici. First Team All Division - Mary Monagle, Hannah Drolet and Second Team All Division - Leah Drolet, Lindsee Allienello, Lucianna Medici with Third Team All Division - Izzy Newton. East Providence football lost to arch rival LaSalle on Thanksgiving Day by a 34-0 score. “There isn’t much to say,” said EP veteran head coach Sandy Gorham after the game. “LaSalle is undefeated and we had one win this year.” Gorham, who has won more state football titles than any other football coach in EPHS history, had announced his retirement at the close of last year. However he decided to return and rescinded his retirement. “I’m actually not ready or able to stop working yet,” Gorham told school administrators.

EPHS hockey looking to defend state title: After winning the state championship in hockey last year, coach Kevin Croke is raring to go. “The Townies Varsity Hockey Team enters the 2012-13 season in a position they’ve found themselves only twice before in their storied 80 year history. That is defending a State Championship. In order to repeat as the D3 champions, the young Townies squad will have to do it with just 2 seniors, 2 juniors, a handful of sophomores and a whole lot of rookies onboard. The Townies offense is expected to be led by senior captains Kevin Hall and Troy Derrick. The Townies also look to sophomores Ryan Costa and Jared Estrella to provide some added offense. Expectations are high this season for Juniors Josh Letendre and Sean Feeney as well as Sophomore center Ryan Galvao. To go deep into the playoffs the Townies will rely on freshman wing Brynne Costa to contribute as well as some solid play from sophomore wing Darren McLaughlin. The Townies forward contingent will be rounded out with senior Karissa Hall, sophomore James Carlson and freshmen Cody DeCastro and Jacob Crombie. The young Townies defensive corps will be led by sophomore Kyle Marquis who, once again this season is expected log significant minutes on the blue line. Joining Marquis on the point will be veteran blue liner and fellow classmate Tyler Maxwell who had big summer and fall hockey campaigns is expected to have a breakout season, sophomore Andrew Gordon who this year is making the move from forward to defense. Rounding out the defensive corps is freshman Austin Hartley, who the Townies hope will be a difference maker. Junior Tyler Medeiros will round out the defense. The Townies will once again rely heavily on sophomore Goalie Marc LaValley to repeat his stellar freshman campaign. LaValley’s 0.90 GAA during the second half of the season led all

AG Kilmartin, RIDOT and AT&T Bring Antitexting and driving high school awareness tour To East Providence

East Providence, RI- Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) are bringing attention to the dangers of texting and driving with a high school awareness tour that will visit East Providence High School on December 17, 2012. Joined by RIDOT State Traffic Engineer Robert Rocchio, AT&T New England President Patricia Jacobs, Rhode Island State Police Major David Tikoian, the East Providence Prevention Coalition, and school officials, the group will bring AT&T’s powerful “Texting & Driving…It Can Wait” campaign to East Providence Senior High School seniors. After a short speaking program, students (seniors), teachers and guests will view an AT&T documentary featuring families impacted by texting and driving accidents, and will then be asked to sign a pledge to not text and drive. “We are spreading the message to young drivers across Rhode Island: No text message is so important that it’s worth taking your attention off the road and risking lives in the process,” said Attorney General Kilmartin, who sponsored the state’s landmark legislation in 2009 banning texting while driving in Rhode Island. “Whether turning the phone off, taking a pledge, or just making it a personal practice, the next time you think about sending or answering a text while operating a vehicle please remember – It Can Wait.” Throughout the school year, AG Kilmartin and RIDOT will bring the public awareness campaign to area high schools. Interested parties are encouraged to follow the lead of the East Providence High School students and go to www.itcanwait.com and take a no-texting-and-driving pledge, and then share their promise with others via Twitter (#itcanwait) and Facebook. A recent AT&T survey1 found that 97 percent of teens say they know that texting is dangerous. The survey also found: 75 percent of teens surveyed say that texting while driving is “common” among their friends; Almost all teens (89 percent) expect a reply to a text or email within five minutes or less; And 77 percent of teens report seeing their parents text while driving. Rhode Island State Police Colonel and Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety Steven G. O’Donnell added, “Distracted Drivers are a serious problem on our roadways. As the enforcement arm of this campaign, we are pleased to join Attorney General Kilmartin, DOT and educators to get the message out to our most vulnerable population, DON’T TEXT and DRIVE!” “Young drivers need to learn that the consequences to texting and driving can be deadly,” said RIDOT Director Lewis. “As we visit area high schools, we will be armed with the same safety message: Don’t text and drive. It Can Wait.” AT&T first began its It Can Wait campaign discouraging texting and driving in 2009. Its partnership with the AG Kilmartin and RIDOT is just the latest way AT&T is continuing to spread the word about the dangers of texting and driving as part of the “It Can Wait” campaign in Rhode Island and across the country. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Attorney General Kilmartin and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation to raise awareness of the dangers of texting and driving,” said Patricia Jacobs, President of AT&T in New England. “We hope that the result of our efforts will be that thousands of teen drivers – and their parents – across Rhode Island will pledge to never text and drive.” For additional information on AT&T’s “It Can Wait” campaign, please visit www.att.com/itcanwait. 1 Survey conducted by Beck Research on behalf of AT&T http://www.att.com/Common/about_us/txting_driving/att_teen_survey_executive.pdf.

Bay View Academy News Bay View Academy Crew Finishes Fall Season With A Flourish

Second Varsity Four Plus Coxswain Wins Bronze Medal at the Head of the Fish Regatta

East Providence, RI - The Bay View Academy crew team wrapped up its fall season this past Sunday, October 28th, at the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga, New York. Head of the Fish, a two mile event, is one of the largest regattas in the country and attracts over 1,600 crews from across the Northeast and Canada. Even with such a large number of crews participating, Bay View stood out with four top-ten finishes, including a Bronze for the Second Varsity Four plus coxswain. Starting off the morning, Bay View’s First Varsity Junior Eights competed and pulled out a strong 6th place finish out of 28 boats, with a stroke rating that reached up to 38 strokes per minute. They finished with a time of 12:23.4, only one-tenth of a second behind St. Catharine’s Rowing Club. Immediately following this race, Bay View’s Second Varsity Junior Eights took to the water. The crew had to adjust to a change in the lineup: an injury to stroke Bridget Clemmey’s back prevented her from rowing. Michaela McGuirl moved into the stroke position, Juliana Kohler into six, and Virginia Liberto into the four seat. This was a transition for Virginia who is typically a starboard side rower, but she did the job well with only one practice to prepare. The boat finished 6th out of 28 with a time of 13:01.2. Coxswain Caitlin Ponko says, “The girls have done an amazing job throughout the season and have improved a lot. I had a blast coxing for them and it was a good way to end our fall season of 2012.” Virginia Liberto and Laura Poulton pulled double duty, heading out soon after their finish in the Second Varsity Eights to row with the Second Varsity Fours. According to coach Albin Moser, “Bay View had an amazing race. Everyone pulled hard, stayed strong, focused and gave it their all.” It definitely paid off as they took home the Bronze medal, finishing with a time of 14:38.4. Rounding out the competition for Bay View was the Freshman Novice Fours who took fifth place out of 27 boats with a time 15:23.1. Coxswain Jessica Silvia says, “The crew did an amazing job all the way through the course… I’m very proud of the place we received.” Coach Moser summed up the end of the season: “As predicted, October was a fast month loaded with a great deal of activity. It was very busy and ended with really positive results for the entire program. This should provide us with a solid foundation for the racing the lies ahead in 2013.” Bay View Crew Line-Up Position, Name, Grade, Town 1st Varsity Eight: Coxswain-Chiara Ponko, Senior; Cranston, RI Stroke-Emmi Hodess, Senior; Rehoboth, MA 7-Julia Calise, Senior; East Providence, RI 6-Erin Dolan, Junior; North Kingstown, RI 5-Diana Lucey, Senior; Bristol, RI 4-Catherine Benetti, Junior; Cranston, RI 3- Katherine Lowis, Junior; Bristol, RI 2-Juliette Risica, Senior; Providence, RI Bow-Virginia Liberto, Junior; Exeter, RI

Bay View Academy Science Teams Are Up To The Athena Challenge

East Providence, RI - For the past two years, Bay View Academy has sent teams to compete in Brown University’s Athena Science Challenge and have made it to the final round each time. This year the Academy triumphed once again with one team fighting through to the final round and finishing in fourth place. The Challenge took place on November 3rd and 4th, and is an annual contest sponsored by Brown’s WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering) Club. The goal of the Athena Challenge is to encourage young women to pursue careers in science and engineering through several rounds of exciting competition and participation in handson workshops conducted by a number of Brown faculty members. During the first round of competition each student will compete in a two hour multiple-choice exam consisting of college level questions which will test her knowledge in the disciplines of Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Geology. Following the exam each student will participate in a workshop focusing on neuroscience, geology, computer science, or physics. The competition resumes in the afternoon as students work in teams of four to solve interdisciplinary scientific problems. At the close of the day, the first and second round team scores are tallied and the top four scoring teams qualify to compete in the final round of competition scheduled for the following day. Last year, the Bay View team was the only local team to qualify for the finals out of a regional field from RI, NY, & MA. The competition is fierce, and not just at the Athena Challenge itself. It begins here at the Academy with the team selection process. Students are accepted to the teams by invitation only, and must have elected to take at least one or more Advanced Placement (AP) Science Course. According to Bay View science teacher Janell Johnson, Ph.D., “we like to select students with interests in a variety of scientific disciplines—biology, physics and chemistry. Most schools only sponsor one team in the competition but we strive to acknowledge and encourage students who commit to a rigorous science course load. Therefore,

December 2012 we are sponsoring three teams this year.” The competition serves to introduce the young women of Bay View to the scientific community at Brown University, encouraging them to realize that they can be part of a high-caliber scientific academic community. The competition also stresses the importance of teamwork in problem solving. Janell Johnson adds, “Each of our students has been blessed with a unique set of talents and a unique point of view. Therefore, each young woman brings something to team that no other member of the group can give.” Bay View Academy Athena Science Challenge Team Rosters Team 1: Emma Hanlon, Senior, East Greenwich, RI; Stephanie DiLucia, Senior, Cranston, RI; Katrina Damiani, Senior, Pawtucket, RI; Courtney McArthur, Senior, Coventry, RI Team 2: Kiely Wilcox, Senior, Swansea, MA; Julia Watson, Senior, Bristol, RI; Emily Petrie, Senior, Seekonk, MA; Kelly Cribari, Senior, East Providence, RI Team 3: Dylan Spets, Senior, Lincoln, RI; Virginia Liberto, Junior, Exeter, RI; Lexi Santurri, Junior, East Greenwich, RI; Cristina Marsocci, Junior, North Scituate, RI Alternates: Amanda DellaGrotta, Senior, West Greenwich, RI; Bianca Saliba, Junior, Johnston, RI; Oyeyemi Kolawole, Sophomore, Providence, RI; Tracy Bettencourt, Sophomore, East Providence, RI

Bay View Academy Soccer Goes Beyond A Rivalry And Lends A Helping Hand

East Providence, RI - Bay View Academy Varsity Soccer team saw the need written plainly in an article in the October 14th Providence Journal and overwhelmingly answered the call—even though it was coming from their toughest competitor. The article was about North Kingstown High School soccer player, Natasha Shein, who along with her sister Oksana, were adopted from a Russian orphanage by a local couple. In an effort to give back to the orphanage and provide much needed toiletries and medical supplies to the children there, Natasha began a collection of donated supplies via her North Kingstown soccer team. She approached her teammates with her plan and they, in turn, placed collection boxes at all of their home games. Natasha and her family have plans to travel back to Russia and visit the orphanage, bringing with them all of the donations that they have received. Bay View Academy parent, Scott Whittum, (from East Providence, RI) first saw the Providence Journal article on Sunday, October 14th, and brought it immediately to his daughter Emily’s attention. Emily, a senior, has played soccer for Bay View since 9th grade. Together Scott and Emily quickly formed a plan and ran it by the Academy Administration to make sure it was acceptable—they then asked the Bay View soccer team to collect the goods that Natasha was seeking, and presented their donation to the North Kingstown player at that week’s Thursday night home game. This gave the Bay View team only four days to get the message out and gather the items. The North Kingstown v. Bay View soccer game (played at Bay View) was significant for a number of reasons; according to Emily, “this was a very big game for us. North Kingstown is the first placed team in our division, Division 1. We were just a few places behind them in the standings, so it was a game to show what we could do. It was a very hard fought game, and ended in a 1-1 tie; a great way to play on our senior night!” In addition, it was senior night and therefore, the last home game for Bay View seniors. But the most significant reason occurred at half time. It was that point in the evening that the Bay View players asked Natasha to come out to the center of the field. There they presented her with over twenty boxes filled with toiletries, medical supplies and other items to bring back to her former Russian orphanage, all collected in just four days. The donations came from the Bay View

players, their families, and even local businesses. The Whittums asked everyone to participate, including their dentist (who donated toothpaste and brushes). Emily talks about the reactions of Natasha and the North Kingstown parents: She [Natasha] seemed very shocked, grateful, and a little embarrassed that she was standing in front of everyone! The North Kingstown parents were also extremely grateful. They cheered and clapped for the Bay View team, thanking my mother and father, who set up a table for the donations, and thanked our players after the game was over. The parents said they were astonished by the generosity of the Bay View community, and thought it was a wonderful thing to do. Emily adds, the Bay View community was extremely supportive with this endeavor and backed it fully. I would just like to thank them all for helping to pull this together in such a short period of time!

Bay View Academy Hosts 2nd Women In Science And Engineering (Wise) Conference For Middle School Girls Women in Science and Engineering: It’s a Girl Thing!

East Providence, RI - Bay View Academy, together with its sponsors, Hasbro Inc. and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) hosted the second annual Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Conference this past Saturday, November 17th. The event, open to girls from any school in grades five through eight in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts, was a great success, drawing 197 attendees representing 27 communities from RI and seven from MA. All girls were provided with free transportation, breakfast, lunch, t-shirts, take home bags and the choice of three out of 16 available hands-on workshops related to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine and Math (STEM). The workshops, led by the Academy’s distinguished faculty and alumnae, covered all disciplines from medicine to Mars. For example, Bay View science teacher Janell Johnson, Ph.D., led a workshop called “Into the Nucleus and Beyond!” which challenged the girls to analyze a DNA sample collected from a fictitious crime scene using DNA gel electrophoresis in order to determine which “suspect” was guilty. Bay View Alumna Dr. Meredith Mulhearn’s (class of 1993) workshop, “How Vital Are Your Vitals?”, gave the girls the opportunity to measure vital signs like blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen levels. Bay View Alumna Jennifer Huff Kushner (class of 2000) , who received her Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College in Astrophysics, led “Red Rover, Red Rover, Send Mars Right Over!”. In this workshop girls recreated the study of planetary exploration through the examination of rock specimens and the use of their own classroom “Rover.” Bay View’s WISE Conference, modeled after the very successful Women in Science Conference held at WPI, offers girls an opportunity to look at science, technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics in a fun, exciting, and educational way. Historically, women have been underrepresented in the sciences but Bay View Academy aims to change that and is committed to exposing young women to, and advancing them within, STEM fields. The Academy has also announced its bookend to the WISE Conference, Women in Creative Careers¸ to take place for the first time on March 9, 2013. Women in Creative Careers will be the same type of free, workshop-centered event, open to girls from any school in grades five through eight from Rhode Island and surrounding Massachusetts areas. It will feature Visual Arts teachers from the Academy as well as distinguished alumnae with creative careers and promises to be an inspiring day that will delight and awaken the budding artist in all. The list of WISE Presenters from our area is as follows: Meg Battersby ’74 (East Providence, RI) Bay View Faculty Barbara Connors (East Providence,RI), Bay View Faculty Kris Durkay (Seekonk, MA) Bay View Faculty Jane Lavallee (East Providence, RI), Bay View Faculty Kristen Smith ‘08 (East Providence, RI) Bay View Alumna; BS in engineering management student at Worchester Polytechnic Institute St. Mary Academy-Bay View is an independent Catholic School for girls open to all faiths, Pre-kindergarten through Grade 12, located in East Providence, Rhode Island. In existence since 1874, Bay View endeavors to provide a quality education preparing girls and young women for the challenges of the global community. How You Can Help Holiday Program Has Started At TAPIN

TAPIN (Touch A Person In Need) was able to assist over 400 families during the Thanksgiving holiday week mainly due to the amazing support they received from local churches, schools businesses and private donors. They are hoping the caring community will also support their Holiday Program this year as they have so generously in the past. The agency plans to provide gifts and a Shaw’s Gift Card for 175 current client families with children in the East Bay area. Toys will be given to children ages infant to 11 years old. The 8 to 11 age range always proves to be a bit of a challenge! Only new toys will be accepted for this program. Children aged 12 to 15 will be given $15 Gift Cards (Target and Wallmart are good suggestions for these). Distribution will take place on Saturday, December 15, so please drop off donations as soon as possible in order to fulfill all needs. When in doubt, monetary donations are ALWAYS appropriate and most gratefully received by the agency. The need for blankets, comforters and sheets continues to be urgent with shelves empty nearly all the time. Full, queen and king sizes are the most requested. Flatware, dishes, pots and pans and small appliances are also needed. TAPIN is located in the lower level of the Library building on County Rd in Barrington, and is open from 9 to noon, Mon thru Fri for donations, further information or a tour of the agency. Checks may be mailed to P.O. Box 252, Barrington, RI 02806 if drop off is not convenient.

The Brown Bag Lunch Program needs your help this holiday season!

This program has been running strong for almost 4 years. We gather together the third Sunday of every month at 8:30 am at Positive New Beginnings, 877 Broadway, East Providence to make 60 brown bag lunches as well as gather donations of clothing, pantry items etc. to drop off to the Family Center of Crossroads of RI on Broad Street in Providence. There are over 15 families housed there at any given time. There are so many families in need this holiday season. Please find in your heart to help out this cause and be part of something truly great. For more information about our program, please visit us at www.brownbaglunchprogram.com. Christmas is quickly approaching. For the first couple of years we asked for help in adopting a family during the holiday season, then last year we decided to raise gift certificates so that we could give the Moms and Dads there a chance to pick out gifts for their children. This worked out very well and the families were so grateful for that. Last year we raised $1625.00. For this Holiday season we would like to continue on as we did last year and raise as many gift certificates to Walmart and Target as possible. We are asking for everyone’s help. We are asking that they be in small denominations if possible such as $10, $15, $20 or $25 so that dividing them among the families there will be easier. I have faith that we will be able to raise at least $2000.00 this year. The Families & Staff at the Center are extremely thankful for everything we do for them. Please help put a smile on a child’s face during this season. No donation is ever too small. We will be meeting on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at 8:30am at Positive New Beginnings, 877 Broadway, East Providence, RI. If you would like to join us on the 16th please send me an email to wendy.stawicki@yahoo.com. If you are unable to make it on the 16th but would still like to make a donation you may drop it off anytime to Positive New Beginnings, attn: Wendy, Monday through Fridays, noon till 7pm or Saturdays from 10am-6pm or Sundays from 9am-3pm. Thank you in advance for your support, Wendy & Mike Stawicki www.brownbaglunchprogram.com

East Bay Community Action Tax Program Seeks Motivated Volunteers

Are you interested in helping out in your community to prepare taxes free of charge? Resume and skillbuilding? The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is a national program in its 40th year. As a Newport County (and other locations) VITA Volunteer you’ll provide free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income families who need assistance. More than 50,000 people said YES! to volunteering during the 2013 filing season, preparing1.8 million returns nationwide. Locally, the East Bay Community Action Program prepared over 1000 returns during the last filing season, putting over two million dollars back into the pockets of taxpayers while promoting the Earned Income Credit and the Child Tax Credit. How does this program work? If you say YES!, you’ll be assigned to work with the East Bay Community Action’s VITA Tax Team. Every volunteer receives TRAINING AND SUPPORT to begin volunteering at a VITA site located nearby. Training is offered both online and in the classroom. VITA Sites are located in community locations where the need is greatest, not in IRS offices. EBCAP Tax sites are open weekdays, one weeknight and weekends, and hours are flexible. Please call the offices of East Bay RSVP at 401-435-7876 for more information. Become a VITA volunteer! It’s a rewarding way to give back to your community. “I think the production of Nutcracker is excellent. It’s just what Nutcracker should be. It’s sweet. It’s light. It’s amusing. It doesn’t talk down to children, it has real magic in it, and it creates that world of Tchaikovsky….But this, I thought, was right on the money. I enjoyed it very much and I was glad to see how many people were there that day.” - Arlene Croce, quoted November 5, 2010 [The Nutcracker] “features some thrilling dancing, terrific sets with a shimmering snow scene, and a solid corps. Most of the show, though, is about good story telling. Choreographer Mihailo Djuric has given us a colorful detail-rich take on this familiar tale with some wonderful touches... Djuric has done no scrimping on this lavish production. He’s assembled a huge cast with legions of kids; some, playing angels in a cloud of fake smoke, as young as seven. It’s a tight show that moves right along with no slow spots. The big moment Friday was the pas de deux between the husband-and-wife team of Vilia Putrius as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Mindaugas Bauzys, as her cavalier. As always, Putrius was exquisite, displaying mind-boggling control and elegance in her turns. Bauzys... was a steady presence who partnered his wife beautifully. “…Familiar as it may be, this is still a classy show.” Channing Gray, December 2010, The Providence Journal

Trinity Rep Announces Second Annual Write Here! Write Now! Festival

Submissions to the annual playwriting competition for students grades 9-12 are now being accepted!

PROVIDENCE – Trinity Repertory Company’s Education Department is pleased to announce the second annual Write Here! Write Now! student playwriting competition. Students in grades 9-12 from the six New England states are invited to submit an original short play (6-10 pages) between now and February 1, 2013. The winning playwrights will work with Trinity Rep staff members to further develop the work, and then see their play read by professional actors in front of an invited audience of friends and family. “Write Here! Write Now! celebrates the three pillars that make Trinity Rep great: company, community and education,” says Education Director Caroline Azano. “By combining our professional acting company with the work of young playwrights in a free performance for the community, we create an unforgettable evening while furthering these essential values.” In its inaugural year, student playwrights from across New England submitted more than 100 plays. For the 2013 festival, Trinity Rep’s education department hopes to reach even more students, and are encouraging English, creative writing and theater teachers to assign 10-minute plays to their entire class, building playwriting directly into their curriculum. “We want more submissions to the festival, of course,” says festival director Michael Williams, “but more importantly we want high school students in New England to discover the power of writing for the stage.” Entries will be reviewed by Trinity Rep staff, and three winners will be announced on March 1, 2013. In addition to seeing their work read by professional actors before a live audience, winners will receive a scholarship towards any Trinity Rep Young Actors Studio after-school class, and each winner’s school will receive 20 free tickets to a Project Discovery student matinee performance during the 2013-2014 Season. For an application and competition rules, please visit Trinity Rep’s web site at www.trinityrep.com/education.

Making Your Home Ready For Entertaining Anytime

(BPT) - One of the many exciting and sometimes stressful parts of the holiday season is entertaining at home with friends and family. To prepare for their arrival you may be tempted to just clean the kitchen counters, toss a few extra towels in the guest bathroom and ignore the rest of the house. Instead, your visitors will enjoy the party more if they have full access to an open, organized and welcoming home. Knowing where to start is the most important thing. Lifestyle guru Susie Coelho has provided entertaining tips for the home on HGTV, “Oprah,” “Today” and “The View” and knows just what to do.

Tip No. 1: Food can make or break a celebration. Start your preparations by stocking the bar and cleaning the kitchen. Set the table or buffet before people arrive. There is a good chance some of the seating for your gathering will be located in the kitchen area. Make certain the kitchen is clean and the sink area is cleared of all food prep materials. If your garbage disposal has an odor, your guests will be sure to notice. Before the party starts, drop in a Power Pack of Liquid-Plumr Disposal + Drain Foaming Cleaner and run the disposal. The fresh citrus scent indicates your disposal is cleaned and deodorized, eliminating the chance of an embarrassing lingering smell being sensed by your guests. “If you decide to host a holiday event or New Year’s Eve party, ask your guests to participate by bringing an appetizer on a decorative platter. This will add different flavors to your event and help encourage conversations about the combination of foods prepared,” Coelho says.- Also, encourage them to match the theme of the gathering, like chips and salsa for a Mexican-themed party or olives, hummus and pita bread for a Greek-themed party.

Tip No. 2: Once the space is clean and the food is ready, add simple decor to make the space warm and inviting. When decorating the seating and buffet areas, Coelho suggests going simple with tea lights in glass votive jars and choosing a one or two-tone color palette for dishes, napkins and flowers. “For beautiful ambiance and magical lighting, arrange candles down the center of the table,” she says. “If you want to add some greenery among them for the holidays, you can, but keep it simple.” In addition to the candles as centerpieces, Coelho also recommends making the food part of the display as well. “Contrast is a buffet’s best friend and you can find it in different heights, sizes, colors of the food, dishes and accessories. I have used everything from fabrics, herbs and pottery to flowers, candles and vases, turned over a dish to get height and used an odd container for display,” she says.

Tip No. 3: The more room you have to mingle, the merrier everyone will be. As people start making themselves comfortable, they won’t just stay in the kitchen. Having all areas of the house clean and open will invite guests to gather and socialize, keeping the party going longer. One room your guests will be sure to visit is the bathroom. Make certain you have the room stocked with plenty of paper products as well as soap and hand lotion. Consider also placing a decorative candle in the room to add a festive glow for ambiance. Most importantly, be prepared for clogged drains in the bathroom and kitchen sinks, which could disrupt the flow of the party. “A clogged sink drain always comes at the wrong time,” says Coelho. “To avoid these inconvenient situations, I recommend keeping two products

handy at all times: Liquid-Plumr Double Impact Snake + Gel System and Liquid-Plumr Urgent Clear. These products work great for both the bathroom and kitchen sinks to keep them running smoothly.” Now that you had prepared your home for guests ahead of time, you can enjoy the fun and party the night away.

Five Easy Ways To Support The Troops During The Holidays

(BPT) - Supporting the troops is an important thing to do - but sometimes it's hard to figure out how to give your support.----Here are five easy ways to thank those people who keep us safe every single day - even if you don't personally know someone serving. And it's the perfect time of year to do it. With the holidays coming up, many of these service men and women are away from family.

Send A Thank-You Gift

Give a personal thank you directly to the men and women serving the country. Some retailers are making it easy to support the troops this holiday season. For instance, national retailer Things Remembered is helping people - even those on a budget - send unique, personalized gifts to deployed service members. Through Nov. 20, Things Remembered shoppers purchasing gifts for deployed military personnel received 25 percent off and free shipping on any personalized gift sent to an APO/FPO address. With more than 600 stores nationally, Things Remembered is helping any American personally thank those protecting our nation in time for the holidays. Even shoppers who don't personally know any deployed servicemen or women can show their support. All Things Remembered stores will be featuring local deployed military members who would love to receive gifts from their hometown neighbors. continued on next page...

Troops serving overseas do not have the luxury of spending the holidays with their loved ones, but there are also former service members stateside who should be recognized. Show your appreciation for those who have helped protect our country by volunteering at your local VA hospital or nursing home this season, even if only for a few hours. You are sure to meet some fascinating men and women, and you'll bring holiday cheer to those who may not have many visitors.

Give blood

It may not seem like it would directly impact men and women overseas, but giving blood through an organization like the American Red Cross can actually help troops hundreds and thousands of miles away. Military units may depend on rush shipments of blood during times of need, and maintaining an ample supply of all blood types is important. You may even host a blood drive at your workplace or community center, encouraging others to give the gift of life this holiday season. To find a blood drive or donation location near you, visit www.redcrossblood.org.

Support troops' families

When troops are deployed, they leave their strongest supporters behind. Particularly during the holidays, it is important to remember the families of active duty service members in our communities. Whether it's a parent, spouse or child of a deployed troop, someone in your area will likely be without a loved one this season. There are countless ways to show your support of those behind our military, whether it's a plate of holiday cookies, community event or simply a handwritten card. During this difficult time, it truly is the thought that counts, and your efforts will be appreciated more than you know. Find a local family to support through an organization like Military OneSource.

Be vocal

Encouraging others to remember our deployed troops is one of the most widereaching ways to support the active military during the holidays. By reminding neighbors that our men and women overseas may need a boost of holiday cheer, you could touch hundreds of service members' lives this season. Talk to people, post on Facebook, send out Tweets or include a reminder in your holiday cards. Every person you impact also becomes an advocate, which can quickly multiply into hundreds of acts of support. Be proud to support our service men and women this year and encourage others to do the same. Although the holidays can be a difficult time for deployed service members and their families, there are countless ways you can show your gratitude and appreciation this season. Whether it's a personalized gift, visit to a veteran, blood donation or support for their families, you can give back to those who give so much to our country.

While my body may have left you, my spirit lives on through you all. In your moments of weakness, remember my strength. As the tears fall upon your face, remember to wipe them away with laughter. Move forward, never backwards. Your lives don't stop because mine ends. I know I'll be missing from your hearts, but please allow someone or something to fill that vacancy. Know that I love and appreciate you all and my life was better because you were in it.

Play With Your Food

Hello, I’m Angela Hall and welcome to “Play With Your Food”…because cooking should be fun! Here we are end of the year, what happened? How did that go by so quickly? Cold, wet, icy rain…yup…December is here! I want to light the oven, simmer soup and bake breads and cookies. I do. I’m cold…it warms the kitchen, the house and the scent of baking is one of life’s greatest simple pleasures. So is sharing good food. Feed people well and they will love you forever…and they do. Unfortunately, my son may never move out of the house. We have been in Southern New England for about 10 years now, from Central New York. Seven years ago, when I was studying International Baking and Pastry at Johnson and Wales University, I went back to NY for the holidays. I brought with me one overstuffed over-night bag and two coolers filled with cookie bars, cookies, walnut candies and mini muffins, along with paper lace doilies and a bunch of “to-go” containers that I had collected for about a year. Everyone got a nice assortment of pastries on a paper lace doily. They love me very much. Making cookies is just plan fun. It is. There is something very Zen about creaming butter and sugar over and over again. Then creating a cookie. I love it! Each type and shape is with the idea of sharing with loved ones. Some like chocolate, some fruit and nuts. I even designed a mini-muffin for my dear friend Lisa Husted it’s called “Lisa’s Moroccan Spice Pumpkin Muffin”. We stay with our friends Lisa and Phil Husted when we are in NY. For Lisa I made the muffins and for Phil I made walnut candies. To be pared with dark chocolate and a nice Port. Actually most pastries I make can be pared with a nice Port; and should be. When in NY we also spend time at our friends Joanne and Scott Luscumb. They have four children between the two of them, Michael, Seth, Rachelle and Joe. So for them I made Cornmeal Cookies, White Chocolate Cranberry Orange Bars and specifically for Joanne and Rachelle, Cowgirl Cookies. I created Cowgirl Cookies from several recipes; I just took all the best from each. I do that with Biscotti too. Cookie cutters are fun as well. Stars and trees are a necessity. Going through a container of cookie cutters is a treasure hunt…I forgot all about those! Fun ones, strange ones… where did that come from? A heart shaped one that I once used to make Chocolate Dipped Bavarian Sugar Cookies at Valentine’s Day for my son’s kindergarten class. They loved me too. A simple sugar cookie with icing, candies or chocolate becomes elegant. I’m going to share “Ginger Orange Stars” a crisp gingerbread-like treat. Have fun and share them with someone you love. In the blink of an eye 2013 will be here. The New Year brings with it new hope, goals and resolutions. I have been writing “Play With Your Food” for a year now. Thank you for reading. I hope you have enjoyed and perhaps been inspired by this article. I have enjoyed writing it and hope to continue in the coming year. May your holidays be safe and happy. All the best to you and yours in the New Year.

Ginger-Orange Stars

When rolling out the dough on a lightly floured work surface, lift and turn the dough frequently to keep it from sticking; dust with more flour as needed. Makes about 31/2 dozen. Cookies: 1 ½ cup all purpose flour 2 teaspoons of ground ginger 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg ¼ teaspoon salt ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temp ½ cup (packed) brown sugar ¼ cup dark molasses 1 large egg yolk 1 tablespoon grated orange peel ½ teaspoon vanilla extract Icing: ½ cups (or more) of powdered sugar 5 teaspoons water ½ teaspoon vanilla extract For Cookies: Sift first 7 ingredients into a medium bowl. Cream butter and sugar, beat butter until fluffy then add the sugar and beat until well blended. Add molasses, egg yoke, orange peel and vanilla. Add four mixture and beat just until blended. Pat dough into ball, divide into 4 pieces, flatten each into disk. Wrap each in plastic and chill until firm, at least 4 hours. Position rack in top third and bottom third of oven, preheat to 350 degrees, line 2 baking sheet with parchment. Roll out 1 piece of dough on lightly floured surface to ¼ inch thickness. Using 2/12 to 3 inch star shaped cutter, cut out cookies. Transfer to prepared baking sheet about ½ inch apart cookies spread very little. Gather scraps and reroll dough, cutting out more cookies. Bake about 5 minutes, reverse baking sheet, bake 5 minutes longer until cookies are puffed and look slightly darker around the edges. Cool on sheet about 2 minutes. Transfer with a medal spatula, transfer to cooking racks. For Icing: Sift sugar into bowl, add water and vanilla; whisk until smooth. Whisk in more sugar by tablespoons as needed until icing falls thickly off whisk spoon icing into pastry bag fitted with ¼ inch plain round tip or resealable plastic bag with the tip cut off, pipe icing on to cookies. Let stand until icing is hard, at least 3 hours. Store airtight between sheets of waxed paper.

Cornmeal Cookies

Makes about 2 dozen. A small Ice cream scoop is great for dropping this dough onto cooking sheet. Two tablespoons work just as well ½ cup unsalted butter ½ cup sugar 2 teaspoons honey 1 large egg ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons milk 1½ cups of all purpose flour ½ cup of cornmeal 1 teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ¾ cup dried cranberries or blueberries (optional) Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, add honey, egg, vanilla and milk. Whisk dry ingredients and add to butter mixture and stir until combined. Stir in dried fruit. Scoop and drop the dough onto lightly greased or parchment lined baking sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes until golden brown.

Choosing the right orthodontist isn’t easy. Until you hear what our patients have to say. When I was told that my child needed braces, my neighbor suggested Dr. Romani. And when I asked her why, she smiled and said: “Well, look what she did for my teeth, and now that Anthony is old enough, she’s taking care of his smile as well… in fact, it was my dentist that recommended Dr. Romani and I’m so glad he did.” –Manuela C, Chepachet office patient See for yourself why so many neighbors and dentists recommend Romani Orthodontics.
