one size doesn’t fit All Today, it’s not just about getting a tablet – it’s about getting the right size of tablet. And with more options than ever, you can be sure to get the perfect device without any compromises

i

n half a decade, tablets have gone from nonexistent to ubiquitous. What once was a cutting-edge Internet device now is as universal as it gets. Kids can operate them operate them before they’re potty-trained, and then teach grandma and grandpa how to use them. In fact, you may have a hard time trying to name someone who does not own a tablet. But just because the devices have infiltrated every corner of our lives does not mean there is not room for improvement. Now, it’s not just about getting a tablet, it’s about getting the right tablet. With more tablets coming in more sizes, it’s a bit like the Goldilocks paradox: Find one that’s not too big and not too little but just right. Here’s a look at the latest options. CTW Features

The first iPad arrived in 2010 with a 9.7inch screen. It kept its screen size over the years while it slimmed and transitioned into what is now called the iPad Air. Then came the iPad mini, small enough to hold with one hand. Now, there is the iPad Pro, with a screen nearly 13 inches. The good news, though, is that what’s on the inside is pretty consistent across the three. All three models snap 8MP photos and 1080p video, and they all offer nearly 10 hours of web browsing time on Wi-Fi. The bigger you go the more processing power you’ll get, but really, it’s just about what size best fits you.

Ultra-thin and light – the 8-inch model is just 5.6mm thick and weighs just more than 9 ounces – this Android tablet is perfect for the user who wants to take the full line of Google services on the go.

Kindle Fire HdX (8.9 inches) $380

Kindle Fire Hd (6 inches, 7 inches) From $100

The Kindle family of tablets has plenty of options. To start, there is the performance-driven Fire HDX, which offers more processing power in a full 8.9inch tablet. Then there is the Kindle Fire HD, which is available in both 6- and 7-inch models and also comes in five colors. Beyond that, there are two Fire HD Kids Edition tablets, with 6- and 7-inch screens. Stream On

a music service they can listen to 24/7 is the perfect gift for the audiophile on your list.

By Matthew M.F. Miller, CTW Features Music is the gift that keeps on giving, and no gift gives more music in the modern age than streaming. This year saw the introduction of several high-profile entries into the market, which makes choosing the right one for your loved one all the more challenging. All services offer in excess of 30 million songs in addition to radio and offline playback. Even the prices are pretty much standard, and aside from the lossless audio upgrade option offered by Tidal, they all sound pretty much the same. So, how does one go about gifting a streaming service this holiday season? Most services offer prepaid gift cards available at your local supermarket or drugstore, which allow users to sign up and use the service for free or, for existing members, forgo payment for the balance of the card. The bigger question, though, is how do you decide which one is the best? If you know which service a loved one uses, stick with a gift card for that service as she already has made the difficult choice for you. If you are buying for newbie, here are the basics to help you choose which streaming service to give the music lover on your list—

Shopping for

Buried Treasure

A & J Anitque Mall By Misty Kaiser, Reporter-Herald We all have at least one person who is impossible to buy for. They either buy what they want, when they want it, or they have obscure tastes that are hard to pin down. We search and search and finally panic into buying another sweater or gift card. Both of which are perfectly fine options, but for those who don’t mind digging deeper, there are two often overlooked resources; flea markets and antique stores. They’re usually off the beaten path and you should plan for time to look around, but the one of a kind finds can be worth it. Here are some tips for getting the most out of a flea market trip:

Think outside of the big box.

Sure, the convenience of hitting one big box store with rows and rows of shrink wrap and clam shell packaging is alluring. But sometimes the act of searching for the perfect thing is part of the gift itself. The extra care shows when they open a carefully selected one-of-a-kind gift, with cries of “Where did

November 26, 2015

you find this?” Places like A & J Anitque Mall in Fort Collins carry both locally crafted gift items and carefully chosen antiques in the same space, so buyers have even more options to find something unique. Fort Collins Flea Market also gives local artisans and crafters a place to sell their wares alongside booths of antiques, vintage goods, jewelry, furniture... you name it.

vintage bar trays might fit the bill. Foothills Flea Market in Fort Collins and Front Range Mercantile in Longmont for example, both have multiple vendors under one roof. Customer get many different tastes and areas of emphasis. Vendors at each booth do the work of selecting things that they feel are worth a buyer’s attention. It’s different from a thrift store in that collections are more carefully curated, meaning that the buyer is getting items that have already gone through the filter of the vendor. Since inventory is rarely the same twice, it’s hard to go in with rigid expectations. Keep an attitude of

Take your time

Schedule a full day, just so that you have time to fully scour all of your local options. Take along some friends or family (just not the ones you’re shopping for) and make a day of it. Who knows what treasures you’ll find. And if you don’t find anything one day one, you can always go back another day. That’s one of the great thing about flea markets and antique shops—turnover. However, if you think you’ve found the perfect thing, don’t put it off, it may not be there tomorrow.

www.asafoot.com

DON’T LET YOUR FEET HOLD YOU BACK Call today for a consultation. We accept most insurances.

Be Flexible.

Contrary to every shopping instinct you may have, it’s better to go into flea markets or antique shops without a specific objective in mind. If you just feel naked without one, make a loose list of people you need to shop for and their interests. Coming across something original and cool that applies to a general interest is easier than locating something specific. Does mom like to cook? Antique cookie boards might fit in her kitchen nicely. Does dad like music? You might find some albums from his youth. New rec room? Neon signs or

Mega Blocks SpongeBob SquarePants Bad Neighbors Playset ($45) Get it here: Toys R Us, 4250 Corbett Dr. Fort Collins, (970) 223-1020, toysrus.com “The Spongebob SquarePants Movie: Sponge Out of Water” was a surprise hit, and the Mega Blocks SpongeBob SquarePants Bad Neighbors Playset includes a buildable pineapple under the sea, as well as the house of his crabby neighbor and nemesis, Squidward. And just in case you thought you’d get off easy this year, “Frozen” remains wildly popular. Anna and Elsa’s Musical Bicycle ($35) includes two 12-inch dolls, a tandem bicycle, Olaf figure and, of course, they play “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” at the press of a button. “Disney’s Descendants” came out of nowhere to be the smash TV-movie success of the summer, and leave it to Disney to be prepared for such success. Tie-in toys are already hard to come by, as kids rush to get their hands on backpacks, underwear, hair chalk, costumes and, most importantly, the dolls ($20 each, if you can find them); Mal (daughter of Maleficent), Evie (daughter of the Evil Queen from Snow White), Audrey (daughter of Aurora), Jane (daughter of Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother) and Lonnie (daughter of Mulan).

‘STEM’ Play

STEM toys – those that encourage science, technology, engineering and math learning – have become the new “it” item with hip parents looking to teach kids some of the most important tools for future success in today’s tech-focused society. Roominate Chateau ($50) is a 131-piece set of modular pieces that give kids the skills to create structures like staircases and bunk beds while building a structurally sound home, in addition to wiring up motors and circuits to create fully functional lights, elevators and carousels. Goldie Blox has been heaped with adoration and awards, and their latest Craft-Struction Box ($40) combines crafting and construction with more than 275 pieces, adding stickers and pompoms to the engineering/construction mix.

Mighty Makers Home Designer Builder Set ($50) is designed for girls and, unlike Barbie, it allows them to build a dream house from the ground up. It includes two characters: Brianna, who specializes in interior design, and Sophia, who is the builder. Choose to build different styles of homes including colonial, ranch and brownstone. Includes 433 K’NEX pieces and instructional cards that teach the basics of architecture.

Lego Mindstorms EV3 ($349) marries the LEGO building system with the technology that allows kids to create and command robots that walk, talk and think. Comes with a remote control that interacts with readymade missions, or kids can download the free app and command your robot using your smart device. © CTW Features
